- 2:44man? We have no idea. You smoke and no, thanks, not
- 2:50right now? Thank you? Well if you do, if you caught the
- 2:57man, I know him, I hope so. Like I told you,
- 3:00his face pressed this close, maybe a put away from where I was looking
- 3:04through the cursions. And you never saw him before? Oh no, no,
- 3:07I never sign affleect the guy across the hall, the guy that was
- 3:09killed. I never saw him before, and lived right across the hall for
- 3:13me. You may think that may sounds and even then it's very possible.
- 3:16No, I lived there for at least I don't know, about seven minutes.
- 3:20Oh there's sergeant Grab. Yeah, he interrogates the line. Oh he's
- 3:23a nice guy. Hey, I have your attention, plea. You people
- 3:29have to tell you the sun of the wire in the audience room. May
- 3:31I have your attentions? Thank you. My name is Greb, Sergeant Matt
- 3:36Greb. I'll explain the lineup to you. Each of the suspects you will
- 3:39see will be number. I'll call off a number, the name and charge.
- 3:44If you have any questions or identifications. Please remember the number a sign
- 3:47of the prisoner as I call his name at the end of each line.
- 3:51When I asked for questions or identifications, call out the number. If you're
- 3:55sure enough, too sure of a suspect, adam, have the officers of
- 4:00look your name will assist. Do their seated among you the questions I asked
- 4:03the suspects similar to get a natural tone of voice, so do not pay
- 4:05too much attention to their answers as they often lie. Bring on the line,
- 4:12All right, boys, keep it moving right over here to the end
- 4:15of the stage. Come on, come on, come on, I'll turn
- 4:18and face FOD. Hands to your signs. When I call your number,
- 4:23step out and face the audience. Keep your head up and look straight ahead.
- 4:27Talk up so empery, but I can hear you all right? Number
- 4:31one? George? Had they rubbery? When do you live? George?
- 4:35Here? In town? Here I live? We get an address? Sure,
- 4:39not twenty third, then forty not twenty third? For how long last?
- 4:45How long have you lived at that address? A long time? What's
- 4:47a long time? A couple of years? I guess that long I lived
- 4:51at least here. There's a long time, and it where you're from?
- 4:54Pisburg? Wa'ts your business? Baker? That was back in Pisburg, though
- 4:58I don't have too many job since I come here. There's too many bakers.
- 5:01What were you doing over at the Madison Terrace last night? I was
- 5:05walking. You always take a walk at eleven o'clock at night, not all
- 5:10of this. Last night, I took one. There's something the matter with
- 5:12that. These times when you do take walks, do you always carry a
- 5:16flashlight and a screwdriver under your shirt? Oh? It just happened to happen
- 5:19with me last night. There's something the matter with that. No, unless
- 5:24you try to break into a heart. I wasn't trying to break in.
- 5:27You had the window open. Yeah, sure I was breaking in? Okay,
- 5:31George stepped back. Number two. Harry sunders the stebbing the piece,
- 5:36so oh, yes, there's the man. Next one questions sure whatever I
- 5:45can. Well, where was it last night? It was somewhere over on
- 5:47Lake on Lake Street or something like that, something like that, in the
- 5:51park, wasn't it. Yeah? The arresting officer said, you were trying
- 5:56to catch us one catch it. I was feeding the thing. I was
- 6:00trying to get the thing over so I could pet it. You didn't want
- 6:03to eat it the swan. You have a big club on the ground beside
- 6:08you. There wasn't my club. It was just laying there. I happened
- 6:12along see the swans swimming around, so I started throwing it through some lousy
- 6:15crumbs. I didn't notice no club on the ground. Eat a swan.
- 6:21Your story doesn't quite fit with the story. With that from the arresting officer,
- 6:25arresting office, arrest and what did he say? What do you sung?
- 6:28Tell me? Tell the people? All right? What are the arresting
- 6:31officers say? I was feeding the stupid birds some bread crumbs? What's the
- 6:36matter with that? Where am I going to eat a swan? Head?
- 6:40Where am I going to eat it? That's a lot of bird. I'm
- 6:42going to start a fire right in the middle of the park at hey,
- 6:44Harry, okay, step back, eat a swan? Where am I going
- 6:46to get a part that big head? Where? That's enough? Harry,
- 6:49it's all Nick number three, Tom fishing as Yes, yes, I'm sure.
- 7:00Sergeant Graham number three hall for interrogation. Okay, gets sit in that
- 7:21chair, Pishop Okay, Well figured out where you were yesterday afternoon. I
- 7:28told you watching the chess players in Jackson Park, watching the chess players in
- 7:31Jackson Park. Showed your pictures around over there this afternoon. Yeah yeah,
- 7:36funny. Nobody remembered seeing you. Real funny because that's where I was.
- 7:40You like chess? Huh? I got interested. How does a bishop move?
- 7:45Huh? Yeah? How does a bishop move on a chess board?
- 7:47I just watch. I don't know the rules. It doesn't get pretty dumb
- 7:50if you don't know what's going on. I got nothing else to do.
- 7:54It's a nice day, so I watched some old duppers play in chess.
- 7:56You're gonna throw me in jail for that. You were identified in the line.
- 8:00Yeah. Yeah. The man who identified you said you were climbing down
- 8:03a fire escape. I told you I was in the park watching a chess
- 8:07watching the chess skame. You know Michael Hunter? Yeah you know someone killed
- 8:11him. No, but I can't say I'm unhappy about it. You threatened
- 8:16Michael Hunter once, didn't you? If I did. It was a long
- 8:18time ago, But you threatened him. Yeah, yeah, i'd threatened him,
- 8:20if you want to call it that, I'd threatened a lot of people.
- 8:22If you want to call it that? What were you doing at Hunter's
- 8:24apartment yesterday? I was in Jackson Park. You've been identified as a man
- 8:30who sneaked down the fire escape. I was watching the chess players. Remember
- 8:35you were booked back at forty seven for a serving Michael Hunter? Right,
- 8:39that's right. He kept bothering my kid's sister. You didn't like him?
- 8:43Huh? No? I didn't like him, would you? I didn't know
- 8:46him. That story about Jackson Park won't selfish? And I didn't kill Hunter?
- 8:50What do you want me to do? Lie? Do you want me
- 8:52to lie? Uh? I was in Jackson Park? How long have you
- 8:56known Michael Hunter? Four years? Five years'd you meet him? My sister
- 9:00was in some play with him? But I didn't kill him. But you
- 9:03really worked him over? I'm sure? What do you want? He made
- 9:05it tough on the kid. I made it tough on him. He deserved
- 9:07it. You use a tire chain on him, didn't you? Something like
- 9:09that? How long has Hunter lived at his present address? How should I
- 9:13know in your neighborhood, isn't it? Yeah? So what you can't take
- 9:18no murder on me? I didn't kill him. Nobody sent your tin what
- 9:20then, what's his hunder isn't dead? He isn't dad, He's in a
- 9:24comba. He may not make it. We just want the man who stabbed
- 9:26him. I'm not it. Hunter had some kind of an acting school,
- 9:31didn't he. Yeah, it's how my sister got to know him. The
- 9:35old set up was a phony. How do you know? I know?
- 9:37He was a lousy actor, looked good, told dames he could do something
- 9:41for him. See it from her? Okay, I belie, you've located
- 9:48the girl on that scar got a dumb hall. Okay, I might take
- 9:52person downstairs. I'll be right back right. I should turned her up.
- 9:58It wasn't easy. We checked all of Hunter's previous so called students. She
- 10:03was one of them. Did just showed of the scarp and she had know
- 10:05that belonged to him. This is Miss Helen Roberts. Hi, this is
- 10:13Lieutenant Guthrie. Miss Roberts. Grab to know you, howdy do Miss Robberts?

- 10:20Who? See? Don't you know Michael Hunter? No? Who's see?
- 10:26Your scarf was found in his A partner? Oh him? Oh? Oh,
- 10:30then you do know him? Sure? I forgot his name. I
- 10:33have known him very long? How long? A couple of days? Since
- 10:35Friday? Yeah? Friday? Good looking guy, said, I got sex
- 10:39appeal. Why'd you meet him? Well, I work when I went on
- 10:43the night shift. I work at the White Spot, twenty four hour rest
- 10:46on Americas. Yeah. Food ain't bad? You eaten there? Yeah,

- 10:52this Hunter spotted him right off real Choote asked me if I'd ever done
- 10:56any acting? Said, I had sex appeal. When was the last time
- 10:58you saw him? To Hunter? Oh, I only saw him once.
- 11:01I only known him for a couple of days. When wasn't yesterday afternoon?
- 11:05What time? Oh? Like around four? Why? What's he done?
- 11:09Someone trying to kill him? You're kidding, No, guys, she was
- 11:15going to make an actress out of me. He was going to teach me
- 11:16how to act so I could get a job, another job out of that
- 11:20beanery. Did you give him any money? I sure did, twenty bucks
- 11:26for lessons. Where's the scar Yeah? This is your scarf, isn't it?
- 11:33Yeah? What time do you leave Hunter's apartment? Right after the lesson?
- 11:37About half hour later, I guess what time? Did I say I
- 11:39was there four o'clock? Yeah, I got a bad memory. Four o'clock.
- 11:43Well, I guess I left about four or thirty. Then was anybody
- 11:46else there? Mister Hunter? He was giving me a lesson, I mean,
- 11:52anybody else besides mister Hunter? Me? Did he say he was expecting
- 11:56anyone? Not? To the best of my knowledge, have any ideas who
- 12:01might have stamped him? Oh? No, No, we had any enemies.
- 12:05Look, mister, all I know is he said, with my sex
- 12:09appeal, I should be in Hollywood Pictures. And I gave him twenty dollars
- 12:11for acting lessons. I don't know none of his friends, and I don't
- 12:15know none of his enemies. Okay, thank you, Miss Roberts. To
- 12:18be sure, can I go now? Yes? Yeah, but don't try
- 12:22to leave town. We may want to talk to you again. Leave town,
- 12:24Hunt. What I gave mister Hunting my last twenty bucks and you say
- 12:28don't leave town by Miss Roberts. Yeah, what was your name? Quin?
- 12:35To be sure you're cute? Stop in the white spot sometime night I'm

- 13:16Oh? I nam al right? I oh no, boys have to
- 13:20sit facts the cigarettes on the desk. That one real Suppose you want to
- 13:26know about a hunter? Yeah? Yeah, what's the latest? It's pretty
- 13:30bad still in a coma, just making out a report than you make it.
- 13:33Maybe, but I doubt ruptured love write humor Thorax and newmo Thorax.
- 13:41His response to treatment has been very poor. Ours chances of regaining consciousness practically?
- 13:46Now, if he did regain consciousness, could he recognize anyone? Would?
- 13:52Probably not. In a case like this, where the patient has gone
- 13:54into coma due to lack of oxygen, the damage that the brain tissue is
- 13:58usually too extensive. Tissues of the brain are especially sensitive to lack of oxygen,
- 14:05and the damage done is permanent. Then then if he did come out
- 14:09of it, he wouldn't be able to point out the man of standing.
- 14:11Nope, Well how about the wound long sharp implement knife? Probably could a
- 14:18woman do it? Sure? Well? Thanks to you that. I'll let
- 14:24you know minute anything happens tomorrow night. Another Big Show joins the fall line

- 15:16apartment, we'll find it. Yeah. How about the garbage cans in the
- 15:20alley. She was going through them now doesn't seem to care for it.
- 15:24They're on a small weighted cardboard box down the incinerator, shoot to make sure
- 15:26nothing was stuck in And where is it with the shoot? Yeah, now

- 15:54Hello. Hello, mister Becker. This is Missus Beckert lit. Missus
- 16:00Beckham. Hello, Lieutenant Sergeant. Why mister missus Beckham, Hello, Serge,
- 16:04it's all the confusion about why all the policemen looking for the weapon?
- 16:08Oh, do you think it might be in the building? It could be.
- 16:12You know, it's probably a knife and a long one. Might have
- 16:15thrown it away or tried to hide it before he went back to the street.
- 16:18Pierson, Maybe that's the man you identified, isn't it. How old
- 16:25did you know mister Hudder, missus Beckham? He was just a neighbor.
- 16:27I didn't know him well at all. I just saw him a few times.
- 16:32I never talked to him a few times, yes, and when was
- 16:33the last time? Four days ago? I imagine? Just hello? And
- 16:37how are you ever noticed anybody with him? No, doesn't have any friends,
- 16:44you know. No, Well, he had a young lady in his
- 16:47apartment yesterday, he did. That's right. Neither of you saw her.
- 16:52No, I didn't see her. Oh no, no, noid Ben,
- 16:56excuse my plan. The janitor has him on duty. Yeah, he showed
- 17:03him a picture of a person. He remembers him from where here, says
- 17:07person was here yesterday and asked for Hunter's apartment number. I'm telling you the
- 17:26old goats out of his mind. The janitor identified you from your picture.
- 17:30He's crazy, but he identified. He says you were in that building yesterday
- 17:33when I wasn't. He says you asked for Hunter's room number. He's mistaken.
- 17:37I tell you made a mistake. It wasn't me a jury. You're
- 17:41gonna think it was Gatherine. Yeah, yeah, I'm good. Okay,
- 17:52we can tell the boys to stop looking for that knife. It's been found
- 17:55yep, in the silver where we took out a Hunter's apartment. One of
- 17:59the butcher knives has his blood on it. Somebody tried to clean up,
- 18:02but there was enough rust pits to leave a little blood for the spectrogram.
- 18:07What does that mean? It means you're still in a lot of trouble.
- 18:10You were identified by two people who swear they saw you in that building.
- 18:14Okay, right, I was there, but I didn't kill him. Well
- 18:18he's not dead yet. Well I didn't stab him. If you think I
- 18:22went up to the knife hunter, would I have gone in by the front,
- 18:23talk to the janitor and let somebody else see me. I might not
- 18:26have been premeditating. It was Hunters butcher knife. That kind of indicates that
- 18:32it wasn't meditating. I didn't go up there to stab and he was already
- 18:34stabbed when I got there. Well, then why did you leave on the
- 18:37fire escape? Because Hunter was on the floor bleeding when when I got there.
- 18:41How did you get in? I walked in. The door was open.
- 18:44Why didn't you call the hospital? Got scared? You blame me?
- 18:47Besides, he looked good, bleeding? Why didn't you tell us us when
- 18:48we brought you in? You serious? What do you think? What time
- 18:53did you arrive at Hunters round five? Five fifteen? See anybody? Just
- 18:57the janitor? How long did you stay in there? But it's just long
- 19:00enough to look and then I beat it out on a fire eskin. You
- 19:03expect us to believed that. Look, it's a true I tell you I
- 19:07walked guess. Yeah, well, uh huh. We'll keep with him.
- 19:18Come on in here and get person. We'll have another talk later. Person.
- 19:23Okay, but I didn't stab hunter here in a spot. You gotta
- 19:26admit that. Okay, take him down, let's go. Okay, Mad
- 19:32and I going out for a while. We'll check in Oka. Say that
- 19:37last phone call? Uh Crockett, he's been tailing Helen Roberts. Yeah,
- 19:44she got in touch with some men at six sixty five North Lincoln. Yeah,
- 19:47Crockett talked to him. He's been running an advertisement for people to drive
- 19:51to California with him. To old Crockett that Helen Roberts paid him twenty dollars
- 19:55supposed to leave with him tomorrow morning. Do you think maybe I don't know?
- 19:59She told us she gave Hunter her last twenty dollars. Oh what if
- 20:14she doesn't go to work? You would like that at I'll be silly Allen's
- 20:17minds looking doll. I don't mind keeping the company. We'll just make sure
- 20:19she doesn't come back to her apartment before we get a chance to go over
- 20:22it good. I still say, what if she doesn't leave or she will?
- 20:26The manager told me he owes her a week's salary. She will go
- 20:30down there and collect it and tell him that here she goes? Okay,
- 20:33hell Aquin, she probably won't stay there long. Just collect the money and
- 20:37tell her more. She's gonna quit. Call out. Do you want a
- 20:41couple of hours anyway? Three? If you can give it to us I
- 20:42didn't give you more, or don't make it look official. Just tell me
- 20:47your coup should stop in and say hello, you're telling me how to operate?
- 20:51Done? One quid going pleasure? All right? Now, what do
- 20:56we doing getting her apartment and check everything and ding her toothbrush? You know
- 21:11it's sure would have been a lot simpler if we knew what she had on
- 21:12that day. Now, collect everything, shoes, dresses, How about these
- 21:19lonely match my eyes? Don't they? Oh? Come on, come on?
- 21:33What's all that stuff? You look like you've been to a sale.
- 21:34How long will it take you to go over these clothes? Evans for one?
- 21:37Blood Michael Hunter's blood. Go through all this? Yeah, check the
- 21:41shoes first, und to blood a lot and she just might have stepped in
- 21:45some who she blood named Helen Roberts was in the apartment. Well, Ben,
- 21:48there's a lot of stuff. How long? Maybe an hour? Maybe
- 21:51more? And they're okay, these would look nice on you, Matt.
- 21:53That's what I said. Match your eyes? Is he? Ben? Most?
- 22:11Some more coffee? Gee? Thanks, Dick. But I really got
- 22:12to get home. How can we quitting a job? I get tired of
- 22:17it. I'm going to get something else, something that suits my talents more.
- 22:21You know, Yeah, you still want to be an actress? I
- 22:26don't know. I guess maybe I'd still like to be one, but I
- 22:29don't know. I'm still pretty upset about mister Hunter's dying. I don't know
- 22:33anybody else in the acting business. Well, I know a few people you
- 22:37do. Gosh, that would be wonderful. Mister Hunter always said I had
- 22:42a lot of sex appealing things, and I don't know why I shouldn't try
- 22:45to be an actress. I know I got the talent for it. Why
- 22:48don't we get out of here, still somewhere and talk some more. Well,
- 22:52I really should be getting home. I gotta start looking for another job
- 22:56tomorrow. That's early. Well, I don't really think besides, you want
- 23:00to go looking for an other job until we see what I can do for
- 23:02you with my friends. Okay, wouldn't you have to be on du teaching?
- 23:07Oh, whenever I feel like it. Yeah, sure, the department
- 23:10doesn't make a move without me. Nothing on these Well, here's another fan.
- 23:26You know. I was just thinking, if Quiet didn't do so well
- 23:29and Helen went home, she'd probably call robbery and he'd get arrested. What
- 23:33makes you think this Robert's girl has anything to do with this? All?
- 23:36Right? Don't just checking every possibility. I think pistons that boy, I
- 23:41don't think so. He had a good point when he said he'd he'd have
- 23:45been foolish to walk in the front door, but they could have figured that
- 23:48one out ahead of time. He's going to be that smarty. He wouldn't
- 23:51have left the knife around. Oh, I don't think that was so stupid.
- 23:53We just examined those knives on chance. We didn't expect to find anything.
- 23:57Yeah, but we did. But it's still smart. Walk in the
- 24:00punt door, used the guy's own butcher knife and put it back in the
- 24:03drawer. That's smart. You don't think he did it? Well, I'll
- 24:07just bet you how much you'll name it dinner? Bet. Think you better
- 24:11work up a good appetite, Ben, are you find something on the heel
- 24:14of these pumps. I'll take a look. I'll get it. Here's a
- 24:18sample of hunter's blood. Uh huh, this is off the heel. It's
- 24:21the same time I seen where. Well, okay, just a minute,
- 24:26Ben, Yeah it's Quine. He's in some Chinese restaurant with a girl.
- 24:30Yeah, well tell him to bring her in, right, bring her in?
- 24:36Quine? Okay, he says, you'll be glad to she's been trying
- 24:41to show him hottie with chopsticks. He was swell when you are, Oh
- 25:00for tending you wanted to date. I'm sorry, but the tenant, huh,
- 25:04you're the lieutenant aren't you. That's right? We met before, haven't
- 25:08we not? Yeah? Please have a seat. Who sleep? That's this
- 25:12all about? Why did this guy bring me down here? Wanted a date,
- 25:18wanted to help me meet some people that could help me get a job.
- 25:21I told him to bring in. Well, I ain't sure about that.
