- 0:01Dave Hamilton: Business Brain, episode 798, for Wednesday, October 21st, Back to the Future Day, 2026.
- 0:09Shannon Jean: I love that. Plus, you just got to drive the...
- 0:13Dave Hamilton: Whatever, the car. The DeLorean.
- 0:15Shannon Jean: The DeLorean, the time machine.
- 0:17Dave Hamilton: Yeah.
- 0:18Shannon Jean: We had that in our Macworld booth.
- 0:19Dave Hamilton: I was going to say, you had,
- 0:23Dave Hamilton: the thing. Yeah, October 21st, 2015 was featured in Back to the Future Part
- 0:27Dave Hamilton: 2, which is why it's that day. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:31Dave Hamilton: Nice. Greetings, folks, and welcome to Business Brain, the show where we take
- 0:34Dave Hamilton: some ideas, we dissect them, we share them, we discuss them.
- 0:40Dave Hamilton: In order to better tune our business brains so that we can keep on leveling up our charmed lives.
- 0:48Dave Hamilton: And speaking of leveling up our charmed lives, our sponsors today include NordLayer
- 0:53Dave Hamilton: AI Scout, which figures out how you're using AI across your workforce and helps
- 1:00Dave Hamilton: you figure out how to manage that.
- 1:03Dave Hamilton: And also Perplexity Computer, where you can start your free trial at pplx.ai slash brain.
- 1:11Dave Hamilton: All those links are always in the show notes so that you can just click on them and make it easy.
- 1:15Dave Hamilton: And in fact, if you sign up for the Business Brain mailing list,
- 1:18Dave Hamilton: we will email you the show notes every week when the episodes come out so you
- 1:22Dave Hamilton: can just click on all the things that we discussed, the ads,
- 1:25Dave Hamilton: of course, but all the other stuff too.
- 1:27Dave Hamilton: So we'll talk more about those sponsors in depth in a little bit.
- 1:30Dave Hamilton: For now, here in Durham, New Hampshire, I'm Dave Hamilton.
- 1:33Shannon Jean: And here in northern california i'm shannon gene welcome to the flannel brothers
- 1:37Dave Hamilton: Podcast that's right if you're watching on the on the.
- 1:40Shannon Jean: If you're on the tube
- 1:41Dave Hamilton: Yeah so the uh watching is an interesting thing we were having a conversation
- 1:46Dave Hamilton: pre-show that made it clear we needed to continue this conversation and it was
- 1:51Dave Hamilton: it's fall here in new england and we were talking about how beautiful uh,
- 1:55Dave Hamilton: the leaves and you know the foliage and all that is just that the environment is gorgeous here,
- 2:01Dave Hamilton: in New Hampshire and this time of year.
- 2:04Dave Hamilton: And Shannon said, oh, you should share some of that stuff online because people
- 2:07Dave Hamilton: would love to see it. Yeah, I'd love to see it. Right.
- 2:10Dave Hamilton: No, I get that you would like to see it. Like that, that's great.
- 2:13Dave Hamilton: And I said, yeah, you know, I started thinking about it. And this is something I've thought about.
- 2:19Dave Hamilton: Many times over the last several decades, I thought it was back.
- 2:24Dave Hamilton: I first noticed it when we were running Mac Observer because we had this this
- 2:29Dave Hamilton: website called Mac Observer. Now, when we started it, content was not my job.
- 2:35Dave Hamilton: My job was the back end and all of that other stuff. And my business partner's
- 2:38Dave Hamilton: job was the content. That's how we divvied up the labor and did all that stuff.
- 2:42Dave Hamilton: Over time, I became involved in content. Now, most of you know that this kind
- 2:49Dave Hamilton: of content, the podcasting kind, is what I what I did. And certainly,
- 2:54Dave Hamilton: obviously, that's true.
- 2:55Dave Hamilton: But there were some false starts, too. I had a column at Mac Observer called
- 2:59Dave Hamilton: Ask Dave where people would send in questions and I would answer the questions.
- 3:03Dave Hamilton: And that eventually became the podcast, but almost accidentally.
- 3:07Dave Hamilton: But but I never stayed consistent with it.
- 3:11Dave Hamilton: And uh it's similar to my posting on social media where i'm not consistent with
- 3:16Dave Hamilton: it and it and i realized like when i was at macworld expo watching steve jobs on stage,
- 3:22Dave Hamilton: and i've done it both ways where i literally live streamed the whole thing and
- 3:26Dave Hamilton: like typed what he was saying this is before you could uh yeah before you could
- 3:30Dave Hamilton: actually video see the video remotely right you know we would go and and not oh.
- 3:35Shannon Jean: I followed those feeds
- 3:36Dave Hamilton: Not transcribed but yeah.
- 3:37Shannon Jean: But i can remember refreshing the
- 3:39Dave Hamilton: Page just we say everybody be refreshing the page we had systems and it's great,
- 3:44Dave Hamilton: Once they stopped, once it, once that was no longer a necessary thing to do,
- 3:49Dave Hamilton: we did it for a while anyway.
- 3:51Dave Hamilton: And then we stopped and it was like, this is a much better way to experience this because,
- 3:56Dave Hamilton: one way of doing it, I was not paying attention to what was being said in like
- 4:04Dave Hamilton: in the grand scheme of things.
- 4:06Dave Hamilton: I was paying attention word for word and trying to like in the moment process
- 4:11Dave Hamilton: and publish and like do all the things.
- 4:13Dave Hamilton: Whereas just sitting there and being an audience member and experiencing the
- 4:18Dave Hamilton: event, I actually got more out of it.
- 4:21Dave Hamilton: I knew what happened, even though the other way I was literally typing it,
- 4:26Dave Hamilton: it didn't matter, you know?
- 4:27Dave Hamilton: And so, and I realized that for me, I'd rather experience life than share life.
- 4:37Dave Hamilton: And that's just my default.
- 4:38Dave Hamilton: It doesn't mean that people wouldn't want to see the things that I would want to share.
- 4:43Dave Hamilton: But it is, like, I like being, like, doing this is the way that I would like
- 4:49Dave Hamilton: to share things. Like, I'm going to have a conversation, and we're going to
- 4:52Dave Hamilton: do a thing, and it's very personal, and I like that. But, like,
- 4:55Dave Hamilton: the people at concerts that are just videoing.
- 4:58Shannon Jean: No, that's ridiculous. It's like, I joke. Yes.
- 5:00Dave Hamilton: That's the, oh, look, the official videographers happen to be standing right next to us. Dude.
- 5:05Shannon Jean: Dude. Yeah. Nobody wants to see your concert footage. Nobody wants to watch
- 5:08Shannon Jean: your fireworks display that you've filmed. Right. Nobody cares.
- 5:13Dave Hamilton: But that's not true people like concert footage of,
- 5:17Dave Hamilton: the latest Rush tour right people are posting that and it is garnering you know
- 5:23Dave Hamilton: thousands and tens of thousands of views people want to see every night's different
- 5:27Dave Hamilton: like slightly different take on things and it's all the social media that's doing it,
- 5:31Dave Hamilton: so I know that people do want to watch that stuff I don't want to be the one publishing it.
- 5:37Shannon Jean: Yeah and I agree like so let's back this up yeah
- 5:42Shannon Jean: I used to not be really into social media either.
- 5:47Dave Hamilton: Yeah.
- 5:47Shannon Jean: And actually, you pushed me to get into it more. Sure. Because to figure out
- 5:52Shannon Jean: this platform, like, okay, great.
- 5:54Shannon Jean: And what I've learned over the last couple of years of being very consistent,
- 6:01Shannon Jean: first and foremost, it depends what you want to achieve.
- 6:04Dave Hamilton: Yes. Right?
- 6:05Shannon Jean: It's if you have something that you're trying to drive traffic to,
- 6:11Shannon Jean: whether it's your business, your podcast, your YouTube channel,
- 6:15Shannon Jean: and you're posting, okay, that's great. And that's what you post about. Yeah.
- 6:19Shannon Jean: But what happens, what I've learned the last couple of years is if you also
- 6:25Shannon Jean: post about your life, it builds a credibility funnel.
- 6:30Shannon Jean: For sure. You're very credible, you know, right? And that's no problem.
- 6:34Shannon Jean: Sure. But it builds followers because they're interested in the,
- 6:39Shannon Jean: for whatever reason the minutiae of your life the small things and i think you
- 6:43Shannon Jean: can do experience life and still share certain things you can't think
- 6:52Shannon Jean: uh like talk about the the the
- 6:54Shannon Jean: fall leaves i was talking about yeah you experience them all the time it
- 6:58Shannon Jean: nothing would stop you from just being like you know what hey shannon asked
- 7:01Shannon Jean: me to take up these pictures and as you're walking back to your house you snap
- 7:04Shannon Jean: a few pictures you post you say man it's just gorgeous out here it's my favorite
- 7:08Shannon Jean: your time of year. That's it.
- 7:09Dave Hamilton: Yep.
- 7:09Shannon Jean: That's all I'm talking about. Because that allows people to connect with Dave
- 7:16Shannon Jean: Hamilton on a different level than Gagab and your business and everything else.
- 7:23Shannon Jean: And I believe that opening up and sharing those things
- 7:29Shannon Jean: It's very interesting. You know, I went to a Christmas tree outlet this weekend,
- 7:33Shannon Jean: and I was like, this is ridiculous how expensive these trees were,
- 7:36Shannon Jean: like fake trees. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I was like, man, I'm going to talk about
- 7:40Shannon Jean: this because this is business and whatever. Sure.
- 7:44Shannon Jean: I kind of liken it to this show. We talk about any topic we want.
- 7:48Dave Hamilton: Well, that's where I was going. That's where I was going to go with this is, like,
- 7:54Dave Hamilton: we've proven with GeekGab, and we're starting to prove it with MacGeekGab,
- 7:58Dave Hamilton: and I'm sure we'll prove it with Business Brain too, is that when you post consistently
- 8:04Dave Hamilton: the things, like you said, that are going to drive people to your business,
- 8:06Dave Hamilton: posting them to the GigGab channels.
- 8:10Dave Hamilton: Helpful information, not please go listen to the podcast 85 times a week.
- 8:15Dave Hamilton: No, it doesn't work. Like tips that would also be in the podcast or whatever,
- 8:19Dave Hamilton: but just putting them out there in the format that is appropriate for that particular
- 8:25Dave Hamilton: platform, whatever it is.
- 8:26Dave Hamilton: And every platform has its own little vibe and its own little thing and yeah
- 8:30Dave Hamilton: you know you you post the appropriate things,
- 8:32Dave Hamilton: and you're consistent about it and it is actually helpful information not just
- 8:37Dave Hamilton: pandering all the time yeah you're giving value it give give give give give
- 8:40Dave Hamilton: right give give give then that will grow that that business's presence,
- 8:45Dave Hamilton: and if those people want to learn more about what makes dave tick,
- 8:50Dave Hamilton: They can come listen to the podcast where I share this stuff.
- 8:56Dave Hamilton: It's just not, I can't, try as I have, I will not be, I've learned that I will
- 9:06Dave Hamilton: not be consistent posting the minutiae of my life.
- 9:09Dave Hamilton: I will post bits and pieces of the minutiae of my life, but it's just not going to be a daily thing.
- 9:14Dave Hamilton: And it's unnecessary for growing. I think you need to give people some way of
- 9:19Dave Hamilton: feeling like they've connected with you.
- 9:22Shannon Jean: I agree.
- 9:23Dave Hamilton: But it doesn't have to be that, right? It can be this.
- 9:27Shannon Jean: Oh, yeah. It can be anything. Yeah. It's not one right answer.
- 9:30Dave Hamilton: No, that's what I'm saying. Yeah. It's what works for you and your audiences.
- 9:34Shannon Jean: And what you're trying to achieve. It's different.
- 9:37Shannon Jean: Yeah. If you're, you know, we're going to have a topic here.
- 9:43Shannon Jean: We're going to also talk today about the importance of getting comfortable behind the camera.
- 9:47Shannon Jean: Or in front of the camera, sorry. Yeah. And I think this is part of it as well.
- 9:51Shannon Jean: It's authenticity, credibility.
- 9:54Shannon Jean: You happen to have a lot of that
- 9:57Dave Hamilton: Because you've been around a long time. Well, I've developed a lot of that.
- 9:58Shannon Jean: You've developed a lot of it over years and decades.
- 10:01Dave Hamilton: Yes.
- 10:02Shannon Jean: Where a lot of people have not. And like, so I believe that sharing
- 10:09Shannon Jean: small snippets of just interesting things or day-to-day stuff has accelerated
- 10:17Shannon Jean: my credibility tremendously
- 10:19Dave Hamilton: For sure in the last couple and and i and it's also like the algorithm you need
- 10:25Dave Hamilton: to feed the algorithm yes and,
- 10:28Dave Hamilton: teach the algorithm show the algorithm that it can rely on you as a source of
- 10:34Dave Hamilton: content right and once the algorithms quote-unquote learn that or see that then
- 10:39Dave Hamilton: they will start promoting your things and,
- 10:42Dave Hamilton: to more people and all that stuff so consistency but you can be consistent with
- 10:45Dave Hamilton: anything it doesn't have to be your personal life but yeah that that if you
- 10:49Dave Hamilton: don't have something else with which to be consistent your personal life is
- 10:53Dave Hamilton: also totally fine it doesn't
- 10:55Dave Hamilton: you know it's what gary v says all the time it doesn't matter what you post
- 10:58Dave Hamilton: just post consistently yeah i mean it does matter but yeah and if you're not
- 11:03Dave Hamilton: posting it doesn't matter it.
- 11:04Shannon Jean: Does yeah that's correct but it's like it even doesn't have to be your personal
- 11:08Shannon Jean: life it can just be personal observations it could be that's it yeah check this
- 11:12Shannon Jean: out look at this i saw this billboard this is crazy i posted a survey
- 11:16Shannon Jean: that i saw this weekend that i thought was insane i'm like is this right do
- 11:19Shannon Jean: you guys agree with this you know that kind of thing it's just i'm interacting and
- 11:25Shannon Jean: uh it does help it when you get those big viral posts
- 11:30Shannon Jean: It lifts up your other content. For sure. But it is challenging to be consistent.
- 11:36Shannon Jean: I schedule a ton of my posts. I'm sure there's a post of mine going to get posted
- 11:40Shannon Jean: on X while we're sitting here talking.
- 11:42Shannon Jean: While I'm sitting down, I'm like, oh, okay, great. This is this,
- 11:45Shannon Jean: this. And I tend to post out or schedule out the day.
- 11:47Shannon Jean: And that's one way that I can be consistent and not be sharing all the time
- 11:52Shannon Jean: versus experiencing all of it. you know?
- 11:54Dave Hamilton: Yeah. No, that, the batching of things is the only reason that I have had success
- 11:59Dave Hamilton: with any of the, the socials it's like that. You have to do that.
- 12:04Dave Hamilton: And otherwise, definitely.
- 12:06Dave Hamilton: Otherwise, what do you, you know, then you, then you really won't be experiencing
- 12:10Dave Hamilton: life. Yeah. It's interesting.
- 12:11Shannon Jean: You're just stuck on your phone.
- 12:13Dave Hamilton: You're stuck on your phone. Yeah, exactly.
- 12:14Shannon Jean: It's just horrific.
- 12:15Dave Hamilton: All right. We are going to talk about getting comfortable in front of a camera,
- 12:21Dave Hamilton: and that will happen in a minute. The next thing that we're going to do is tell you about our sponsors.
- 12:26Dave Hamilton: Look, the best tools are the ones that you hand something to and then walk away from.
- 12:32Dave Hamilton: And that's what I love about our sponsor, Perplexity Computer.
- 12:36Dave Hamilton: I connected it to the WooCommerce store behind our MacGeekGab Premium subscriptions
- 12:41Dave Hamilton: for the other podcast I do.
- 12:42Dave Hamilton: I told it what I wanted, new sales, renewals, one-time purchases.
- 12:47Dave Hamilton: I wanted it to gather all that data, and then it built the reports.
- 12:50Dave Hamilton: Smooth, flawless, and I didn't have to babysit any of it.
- 12:54Dave Hamilton: And here's the even smarter part. Computer isn't locked into one AI model, right?
- 13:00Dave Hamilton: Because it's perplexity, it orchestrates all the leading models behind the scenes
- 13:05Dave Hamilton: and sends each step of your project to whichever one is right for that step.
- 13:10Dave Hamilton: You say what you need done, and then you get out of the way.
- 13:14Dave Hamilton: I've started phrasing requests to it more politely than I've phrased them to
- 13:17Dave Hamilton: actual humans, you know, just in case.
- 13:19Dave Hamilton: That's the charm of life, though, right? Handing something off and trusting it's handled.
- 13:24Dave Hamilton: For a limited time only, you, our listeners, can try Perplexity Computer for free.
- 13:30Dave Hamilton: Head to pplx.ai slash brain.
- 13:35Dave Hamilton: That's pplx.ai slash brain to try computer today.
- 13:41Dave Hamilton: Most AI tools are still answering questions while Perplexity Computer is completing full projects.
- 13:47Dave Hamilton: Go check it out. I think you're going to like it as much as I do.
- 13:49Dave Hamilton: And our thanks to Perplexity Computer for sponsoring this episode.
- 13:53Dave Hamilton: Quick question for anyone with a team. Do you actually know which AI tools your
- 13:57Dave Hamilton: people are using right now? Not the approved list, the real one.
- 14:01Dave Hamilton: Because I'll tell you what I know from my own setup, right? I've got agents
- 14:05Dave Hamilton: running with connections to servers all over the place, like we've been talking about here, right?
- 14:08Dave Hamilton: And keeping track of what reaches what is genuinely hard when it's just me.
- 14:14Dave Hamilton: Multiply that by a staff, right?
- 14:17Dave Hamilton: That's what NordLayer AI Scout is for, our sponsor here.
- 14:21Dave Hamilton: It's the visibility layer for enterprise AI. It shows you every AI tool your
- 14:26Dave Hamilton: team is actually using across web and desktop.
- 14:29Dave Hamilton: It catches all the sensitive stuff, source code, API keys, customer data,
- 14:34Dave Hamilton: before it gets pasted into a public tool.
- 14:37Dave Hamilton: And it keeps an audit trail. So when a customer asks you how you govern AI,
- 14:41Dave Hamilton: you've got a real answer for them.
- 14:43Dave Hamilton: It also shows which connections your coding agents are making and tells you
- 14:48Dave Hamilton: whether those 200 seats you're paying for are actually being used.
- 14:52Dave Hamilton: It deploys silently. No new app for anyone to log into.
- 14:56Dave Hamilton: Think of it as a doorbell cam for AI, right? See it. Record it.
- 15:00Dave Hamilton: Decide what happens next. It's up to you.
- 15:02Dave Hamilton: But you can't govern what you can't see. And that's the charmed life.
- 15:06Dave Hamilton: Knowing instead of hoping.
- 15:08Dave Hamilton: Find out what your team is actually doing with AI at NordLayer.com slash AIScout slash BusinessBrain.
- 15:17Dave Hamilton: Go check it out. I think you're going to like what you find.
- 15:19Dave Hamilton: And our thanks to NordLayer AI Scout for sponsoring this episode.
- 15:26Dave Hamilton: All right, Shannon. All right. Cameras, video cameras, specifically.
- 15:32Dave Hamilton: Publishing yourself after recording yourself on video.
- 15:36Shannon Jean: Yeah, getting comfortable in front of the camera. Number one,
- 15:38Shannon Jean: why you need to get comfortable?
- 15:39Dave Hamilton: Because- I think we just talked about that.
- 15:41Shannon Jean: We did just talk about it. And I always tell people want to buy from people,
- 15:46Shannon Jean: no matter what you're selling.
- 15:48Shannon Jean: If you're in business, people want to know who you are. And whether it's you,
- 15:52Shannon Jean: your employees, or whatever, I think it should be you. I think founder-led content
- 15:56Shannon Jean: is really powerful, especially with so much AI slop going on.
- 16:01Shannon Jean: And you just see a lot of AI backlash online about even just images being made,
- 16:06Shannon Jean: posters made that you can just tell were put together.
- 16:10Shannon Jean: And so you talking to the camera is very powerful. You know,
- 16:15Shannon Jean: no one's going to tell your message and your noble cause and all these things like you will. Yeah.
- 16:23Shannon Jean: And if you can't do it, again, you can have your employees do it,
- 16:25Shannon Jean: but it's better, I think, if you do it.
- 16:28Shannon Jean: And I kind of have this three-step process is the way I think about it. Number one is,
- 16:35Shannon Jean: You start recording yourself, and you don't share it with anybody.
- 16:39Shannon Jean: Just like when we started this podcast, Dave didn't post any of the shows.
- 16:42Dave Hamilton: Yeah, we did. I mean, we didn't do it for that long.
- 16:44Shannon Jean: This is a better origin story.
- 16:46Dave Hamilton: A couple of times. Sorry. Yeah.
- 16:48Shannon Jean: No, it's okay. So the first few episodes never went anywhere because I didn't
- 16:51Shannon Jean: know what I was doing. And Dave had been podcasting for like a decade already.
- 16:55Shannon Jean: So you just put in the reps, and you practice, and you look, and you won't like it.
- 17:00Shannon Jean: You'll just be like, oh, I look terrible. I do this. I do that.
- 17:03Shannon Jean: It's just I can't talk. I can't do this.
- 17:04Dave Hamilton: But you will notice things. I mean, that's why we did the first couple episodes
- 17:08Dave Hamilton: was to just get a rhythm together. Like I knew we knew how to talk with each
- 17:12Dave Hamilton: other that we'd proven over, you know, decades.
- 17:16Dave Hamilton: But yes, like figuring out, okay, here's the flow. Hey, we should have some
- 17:20Dave Hamilton: hand signals. Hey, we should like learn how do we get in or out of this?
- 17:24Shannon Jean: Like, let's not talk over each other, this kind of thing.
- 17:26Dave Hamilton: But also like, and we did, we did a couple of those until we got to a point
- 17:31Dave Hamilton: where we were comfortable with our discomfort.
- 17:35Dave Hamilton: And that's the moment that we published the first episode.
- 17:38Dave Hamilton: And you can't wait until it's perfect. I get this question, like my entire life,
- 17:44Dave Hamilton: I've gotten this question from musicians. And at one point I was that musician.
- 17:48Dave Hamilton: And I remember someone like I was asking, like, when do you think you're you're ready?
- 17:55Dave Hamilton: And it was a guy who played in a band that had been playing for a long time
- 17:58Dave Hamilton: and he said, oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 18:00Dave Hamilton: He's like, just go start playing gigs.
- 18:04Dave Hamilton: He's like, every gig is worth 10 rehearsals.
- 18:07Dave Hamilton: You will learn things and then you will do better at the following gig and better
- 18:11Dave Hamilton: at the following gig. You can't, your first gig isn't going to be perfect. No gig is.
- 18:17Shannon Jean: You should never think it's going to be.
- 18:18Dave Hamilton: And that's true here. If you wait until your video is what you want it to be,
- 18:24Dave Hamilton: you will never publish the first one. You just have to keep going.
- 18:28Dave Hamilton: Do a couple to get your lighting right, get your sound right.
- 18:32Shannon Jean: Lighting? I didn't have any lighting. You just sold your phone up.
- 18:35Shannon Jean: That's fair. Yeah. And now...
- 18:38Shannon Jean: The thing that helped me the most is when i eventually hired someone to help
- 18:42Shannon Jean: me edit these the tools for editing are so good now
- 18:46Dave Hamilton: It's crazy and.
- 18:46Shannon Jean: They i was like stopping and like starting overnight and they finally were like
- 18:51Shannon Jean: why are you stopping just keep talking just keep going don't stop you screw up you say okay yeah
- 18:58Shannon Jean: i'm i'm on this then you just keep going keep going keep going because the the
- 19:02Shannon Jean: tools now that you know whether you use cap cut or you know opus or whatever
- 19:07Shannon Jean: software you want to play with, it'll clean all that up for you.
- 19:10Shannon Jean: It'll clip it so much better. Yep. And so you just have to keep talking.
- 19:15Shannon Jean: So you start out just to yourself, and then you need to find a small group that
- 19:18Shannon Jean: you can share with, either business guys that you know or some friends that
- 19:24Shannon Jean: you could just share, just so you get comfortable. It doesn't matter what they say.
- 19:27Dave Hamilton: It doesn't. No, it's right. Yep.
- 19:29Shannon Jean: You don't even, don't ask them for critiques. Say, guys, I'm going to start,
- 19:31Shannon Jean: I'm going to do this. Like, we have it in, like, we have people in our reseller
- 19:37Shannon Jean: mastermind that It's like, I don't want to go post online where there's thousands,
- 19:41Shannon Jean: you know, where everyone gets seen by everybody, but I'll post it here.
- 19:44Shannon Jean: Great. So you just build your comfort level up to eventually –
- 19:50Shannon Jean: You just don't care because you know what? Nobody else cares.
- 19:52Dave Hamilton: That's the thing. Everybody cares about themselves. The amount that you care
- 19:56Dave Hamilton: about you is valid and true. Of course it's true. Like we're not going to tell
- 20:00Dave Hamilton: you, you don't care the way amount you actually care.
- 20:02Dave Hamilton: But the thing to remember is everybody else thinks about themselves first, the same way.
- 20:08Dave Hamilton: All the little nitpicks that you do. I happened to notice just last week,
- 20:12Dave Hamilton: a video that I recorded last week.
- 20:15Dave Hamilton: It wasn't some old video or whatever. It was a new video.
- 20:18Dave Hamilton: I was scrolling Instagram and I saw it and I was like oh my god the lighting
- 20:21Dave Hamilton: is awful on this like okay but it was all that I all that I took from that was
- 20:27Dave Hamilton: okay next time I just got to make sure I have lighting behind me it wasn't like,
- 20:30Dave Hamilton: I need to delete this video yeah it's it's imperfect no no I'm,
- 20:36Dave Hamilton: if if other people noticed it fine I mean I'm sure there's some people that
- 20:39Dave Hamilton: are into lighting that are like oh my god that's that lighting's terrible,
- 20:42Dave Hamilton: They're still going to watch the thing if the message is applicable for them.
- 20:46Dave Hamilton: Most of them will. They might comment, your lighting sucks. Love the message.
- 20:50Dave Hamilton: You know, the same thing.
- 20:51Shannon Jean: That's great. You want their comments. That means they watched you.
- 20:54Dave Hamilton: That's it. Yeah. No, you just, but I would also, especially in today's world, I would post sooner.
- 21:04Dave Hamilton: Share with your friend group. I like that idea. That's good to get feedback.
- 21:07Dave Hamilton: But at some point, just post on one of your channels and say,
- 21:11Dave Hamilton: hey, I'm testing a thing out.
- 21:15Dave Hamilton: I'm not ready to publish yet. Would love your feedback on this.
- 21:18Dave Hamilton: What you have done is published.
- 21:21Dave Hamilton: But you've done it in a safe way, right? You've said, I'm not ready to publish
- 21:25Dave Hamilton: yet, so I just want your feedback on this thing.
- 21:27Dave Hamilton: That's literally publishing. But everybody will take it as, oh,
- 21:31Dave Hamilton: let me give you feedback and let me tweak this. And then it's like,
- 21:34Dave Hamilton: okay, well, there's my first video. Now here's my next one. So there you go.
- 21:37Shannon Jean: Yeah, that's great. And when you first start, especially if you're posting publicly,
- 21:42Shannon Jean: you don't probably have many followers. My first post on X after Dave told me
- 21:45Shannon Jean: to go start posting on X, I got six views,
- 21:48Dave Hamilton: Right?
- 21:49Shannon Jean: And I was talking about business brain. So it's not like you're going,
- 21:54Shannon Jean: oh, wow, I'm going to put it out there. I'm going to have millions of people. No, no, you're not.
- 21:57Dave Hamilton: Probably not. You just do it.
- 21:58Shannon Jean: Yeah, and Dave, I stole this from Dave and modified it a little bit,
- 22:03Shannon Jean: but he has this thing where he'll say, oh, wow.
- 22:05Shannon Jean: When you're rolling something new out in your business, one of the good ways
- 22:09Shannon Jean: to get acceptance is to say, hey, this is a two-week experiment. Yeah.
- 22:12Shannon Jean: We're going to try. Even if you're ahead, you're like, man, this is a new policy.
- 22:15Dave Hamilton: There's no way this is changing. That's right.
- 22:17Shannon Jean: Yeah, we're staying there. But when you announce it, you say,
- 22:19Shannon Jean: hey, it's a two-week experiment. So we can see. It just gets everybody's buy-in.
- 22:23Shannon Jean: I use the same tactic. I always say, hey, I love experiments.
- 22:27Shannon Jean: So I'm going to try this thing. I have no idea how it's going to work.
- 22:31Shannon Jean: But let's figure, I'm just going to do it publicly and maybe it'll bomb,
- 22:35Shannon Jean: but maybe it'll do good. And I did the same thing for posting online.
- 22:39Shannon Jean: It's like, I have no idea what I'm doing. I still don't know,
- 22:41Shannon Jean: but I'm going to experiment. I'm going to figure it out.
- 22:44Shannon Jean: And that attracts a lot of people.
- 22:47Dave Hamilton: The low lighting. Because we all think that way.
- 22:49Shannon Jean: Yes. The low lighting attracts people because they're like, oh,
- 22:52Shannon Jean: this is real. This is Dave. I know who Dave Hamilton is. He's just sitting in his whole tent.
- 22:56Dave Hamilton: It's a proof of life video.
- 22:58Shannon Jean: Correct. It's true. I make all kinds of grammatical errors in my post,
- 23:02Shannon Jean: and I had somebody call me out the other day. I'm like, that's how you know it's me.
- 23:06Shannon Jean: I'm not proofreading something I'm firing off really quick.
- 23:11Shannon Jean: It's real, and it just kind of goes through.
- 23:12Dave Hamilton: I do recommend you proofread for spelling errors, folks.
- 23:15Shannon Jean: Dave's a spelling guy.
- 23:17Dave Hamilton: I do that too.
- 23:17Shannon Jean: For general.
- 23:19Dave Hamilton: No, but that's the thing. We all have our own.
- 23:22Dave Hamilton: If I posted stuff where there were spelling errors all over,
- 23:25Dave Hamilton: I mean, they come out sometimes because you just don't notice it.
- 23:28Shannon Jean: It doesn't happen all the time.
- 23:28Dave Hamilton: Right. But people know you. You have your brand. Yeah.
- 23:33Shannon Jean: I often use the wrong word. Yeah. I'll just be like, da-da-da.
- 23:35Shannon Jean: And it'll say, oh, and then gives me a chance to go back and say,
- 23:38Shannon Jean: well, actually, what I meant was this and everything.
- 23:40Dave Hamilton: Yeah. It was just also fine. That's real. Yeah. Yeah. The more you go record something.
- 23:46Dave Hamilton: I, when I taught that podcasting class, the business of podcasting, I, the first time,
- 23:54Dave Hamilton: This assignment that I gave to people, and I really like this.
- 24:01Dave Hamilton: It was my first time teaching anything, and here I was teaching juniors and
- 24:04Dave Hamilton: seniors in college in the business school, who were going to have a college
- 24:08Dave Hamilton: degree in two years that I still don't have, which I thought was ironic.
- 24:12Dave Hamilton: But anyway, they I had them record themselves talking for three minutes and
- 24:21Dave Hamilton: it could it had to be they could talk off the cuff for three minutes if they wanted.
- 24:26Dave Hamilton: OK. Or they could read something that they wrote, but not something that they
- 24:32Dave Hamilton: had written previously. You need to write a script for this.
- 24:36Dave Hamilton: Now, if you can take that script and repurpose it for an assignment for another
- 24:39Dave Hamilton: class, Like if you have to write something and it hasn't been written yet,
- 24:42Dave Hamilton: go ahead and write it, read it, submit it for the other class. I don't care.
- 24:46Dave Hamilton: But I wanted something new from you that you recorded to learn how long three minutes is.
- 24:52Dave Hamilton: For video, I would give you the same assignment. Record something that is 60 seconds long.
- 24:59Dave Hamilton: It can be you just talking, and you don't have to share it with anybody.
- 25:02Dave Hamilton: Or it can be you reading a script that you wrote for the purpose of that thing.
- 25:07Dave Hamilton: And then again, you can repurpose it for whatever you want. But learn what 60
- 25:11Dave Hamilton: seconds is because that's what you're going to be targeting and get a sense
- 25:14Dave Hamilton: of that. It's longer than most people think.
- 25:16Shannon Jean: Oh, my gosh.
- 25:17Dave Hamilton: It's shorter than some people think.
- 25:19Shannon Jean: Yeah, that's right. And it can be daunting.
- 25:22Shannon Jean: And so starting it and just doing it over and over and over.
- 25:27Shannon Jean: And everybody has this thing that we all own that you can start with immediately.
- 25:33Shannon Jean: You don't need any other tools.
- 25:35Shannon Jean: All you do is turn that camera around and start talking.
- 25:38Shannon Jean: And you'll get used to it. and it'll benefit your business and your i think your life dramatically
- 25:43Dave Hamilton: So right now we have hit 60 seconds since i brought that subject in it's it's
- 25:49Dave Hamilton: that much content folks yeah yep all right uh what is the big takeaway here
- 25:56Dave Hamilton: shannon for this episode.
- 25:59Shannon Jean: My big takeaway is that you should build whatever you're doing in public. It makes you –
- 26:07Shannon Jean: it attracts people to your business or your cause or whatever it is,
- 26:11Shannon Jean: and it's more authentic, and you share the successes and the failures.
- 26:16Shannon Jean: You'll attract often more people by sharing the things you fail at.
- 26:20Shannon Jean: And I just think that building in public is just super powerful and easy to start.
- 26:27Dave Hamilton: Yeah, I mean, I think this part is obvious, but I'll say it.
- 26:31Dave Hamilton: Building in public with intention, I think, is the important part.
- 26:35Shannon Jean: Yeah, what is the purpose of what you're doing?
- 26:37Dave Hamilton: Yeah, even though you might achieve a different result than you intended, that's fine.
- 26:44Shannon Jean: Yeah, you may not know in the beginning. Like, I did not know.
- 26:47Dave Hamilton: But you're intentionally building and making it clear that you're intentional
- 26:52Dave Hamilton: about that. Like, I'm doing this.
- 26:53Dave Hamilton: I'm experimenting. I don't know why. like that that's that's actually an intention
- 26:58Dave Hamilton: even though it doesn't sound like one so yeah and then what we do is we'll take this uh,
- 27:03Dave Hamilton: the the the big takeaway and we will churn it
- 27:07Dave Hamilton: we'll crunch it and we will turn it into a business brain blueprint that you
- 27:13Dave Hamilton: can go get at businessbrain.show slash blueprint so go check it out because
- 27:19Dave Hamilton: you're going to want to go
- 27:20Dave Hamilton: and see that at businessbrain.show slash blueprint and we'll teach you how to
- 27:24Dave Hamilton: apply this in your business.
- 27:26Dave Hamilton: Have a great day and we'll keep living that charmed life. We'll see you on Friday.
- 27:32Shannon Jean: See you Friday.
