- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson. I sure
- 0:15Speaker 1: hope everyone had a very very happy Thanksgiving. Weather's a
- 0:20Speaker 1: little rough here. It's been a little rough in Indiana.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I know that, Lance. I know you have a compound
- 0:25Speaker 1: where you keep the bad weather away. It's all quiet
- 0:29Speaker 1: in Cardinal Territory since the trade that sent Sunny Gray
- 0:35Speaker 1: to the Red Sox. But there are some newsy items.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I call them newsy because they're little pieces of potential
- 0:43Speaker 1: news but not really news. But we're here to talk
- 0:46Speaker 1: about it. So one of the things is that Ali
- 0:50Speaker 1: Marmal and the Cardinals are talking about a contract extension.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Full disclosure. You guys are pro Ali. I'm pro Ali.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But some people are questioning. You got a reset on
- 1:03Speaker 1: your hands, You got a new president of baseball operations.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Is this the right move for the Cardinals? Lance And
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'll start with you.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I think you're looking at a reset, right And him said,
- 1:16Speaker 3: what two years with Ali to talk over all the
- 1:20Speaker 3: you know, the good and the bad and the ugly
- 1:22Speaker 3: that could be.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Going on or that needs to change.
- 1:24Speaker 3: And they obviously see eye to eye on some some
- 1:27Speaker 3: areas that could be adjusted and this and that. So
- 1:30Speaker 3: if you're going to do a reset and you already
- 1:32Speaker 3: have someone in place that knows the direction you want
- 1:36Speaker 3: to go, that you feel comfortable with the way that
- 1:38Speaker 3: they go about their business, it's a no doubt. And
- 1:42Speaker 3: I think Ali's perfect for what they have going on
- 1:45Speaker 3: and how they're trying to go about this offseason.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And hey, you want to rebuild, you want.
- 1:50Speaker 3: To give these kids a chance to show who they are,
- 1:52Speaker 3: but you also need someone that has managerial experience, knows
- 1:56Speaker 3: these guys, know what's what buttons to push, knows you
- 2:00Speaker 3: know who can do what where. It's a great starting
- 2:03Speaker 3: point to have that. And you know, no real manager
- 2:06Speaker 3: wants to come in to this anyways, to be honest
- 2:10Speaker 3: with you all, he's already in the thick of it.
- 2:12Speaker 3: He's already, you know, dealt with all the storm of
- 2:16Speaker 3: I guess everything that's happened so far with going into
- 2:20Speaker 3: this rebuild, and none of that was his fault. It's
- 2:23Speaker 3: either players not performing the way they were supposed to
- 2:25Speaker 3: and or just kind of organization will take in a
- 2:28Speaker 3: different turn.
- 2:29Speaker 2: And he's equipped for that term because of this player.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Development that he had when he was a minor league
- 2:34Speaker 3: coach and running spring training and stuff like that. So
- 2:37Speaker 3: he's equipped for this move in a way that I
- 2:40Speaker 3: think most managers aren't.
- 2:42Speaker 4: What'd you think, Kyle, Yeah, I mean I think.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It's easy.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I think looking at that managerial position, you can look
- 2:54Speaker 4: at it in a few different ways.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:55Speaker 4: You have some guys that you know, might have a
- 2:57Speaker 4: little bit more free reign to do raws, not roster construction,
- 3:01Speaker 4: but lineup construction, whether it's Bochi or you know, kind
- 3:04Speaker 4: of the guys that have that type of respect level
- 3:07Speaker 4: or you know, just they handle the job different. So
- 3:10Speaker 4: you have those guys, and then I think you have
- 3:13Speaker 4: you know, maybe some hybrids in the middle, But then
- 3:15Speaker 4: you also have some guys who are a lot of
- 3:17Speaker 4: culture driven moves.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:18Speaker 4: I think the only reason these conversations are probably happening
- 3:22Speaker 4: is because Time and Ali are comfortable with each other
- 3:26Speaker 4: and where they're at with how he can lead this organization,
- 3:30Speaker 4: and they believe that he is the guy that still
- 3:32Speaker 4: has the locker room trust and can build the culture
- 3:37Speaker 4: that Time and the Cardinals want it to be. That's
- 3:40Speaker 4: to me, that's what it comes down to, because If
- 3:41Speaker 4: he's not that guy, then these talks wouldn't happen, and
- 3:45Speaker 4: more than likely that move would have already been made
- 3:48Speaker 4: because I think you want that guy in place for
- 3:51Speaker 4: this last part of the reset, because I don't think
- 3:53Speaker 4: Cardinals fans deserve for it to be more than a
- 3:56Speaker 4: couple of year reset. I think the Cardinals have the
- 3:58Speaker 4: funds and they have the ability to make this a
- 4:01Speaker 4: quick turnaround, and I think they should so I think
- 4:04Speaker 4: it makes sense for Ali to be extended if he's
- 4:07Speaker 4: the guy that Heim is comfortable to lead this through
- 4:11Speaker 4: the through the rest of the situation, and through the
- 4:13Speaker 4: rest of the next couple of years.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I think the compelling part is Him's been around for
- 4:18Speaker 1: a while, so he got to know Ali, so there's
- 4:20Speaker 1: going to be no surprises with what he's getting with
- 4:23Speaker 1: with Ali, and Ali's certainly comfortable with him. It makes
- 4:27Speaker 1: sense to me. But here's why I think Oli Marvel
- 4:31Speaker 1: is a good manager. First of all, you can second
- 4:33Speaker 1: guess moves here and there. To me, that's, you know,
- 4:36Speaker 1: little pieces of the puzzle. I think he's gotten better,
- 4:40Speaker 1: but the Cardinals have had some downs. We've had some
- 4:43Speaker 1: ups and some downs under Ali. There's no question, he
- 4:46Speaker 1: has never lost the clubhouse. I'm up, you know up
- 4:50Speaker 1: in there firsthand. You guys know that, And I can
- 4:52Speaker 1: tell players, what do you mean that means? I go,
- 4:58Speaker 1: I mean I'm digging a little too deep when I'm around.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Never comfortable, Never comfortable because you never know, you never
- 5:06Speaker 1: know what.
- 5:07Speaker 2: They could whack you.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So the thing is like you get to get a
- 5:12Speaker 1: real sense of what's going on in the clubhouse. You know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: when there's a guy who's unhappy, disgruntled, you know, when
- 5:19Speaker 1: you know a manager might have kind of lost control
- 5:22Speaker 1: of the clubhouse. The players still play for Ali. After all,
- 5:27Speaker 1: they went through and there's some guys that had some
- 5:29Speaker 1: bad seasons. You know, there's a new mix of guys
- 5:32Speaker 1: in there, the rotation of guys showing up from Emphis.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Ali was in control of the clubhouse and the guys
- 5:38Speaker 1: played from I don't know if there's a better compliment
- 5:40Speaker 1: for a manager than the team continuing to play for him.
- 5:44Speaker 1: What what do you think Lance in your mind, at
- 5:47Speaker 1: least sets Ali apart.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Oh, I think you're looking at a guy who's who's
- 5:51Speaker 3: you've seen build his way all the way up.
- 5:53Speaker 2: He played in the minor leagues.
- 5:56Speaker 3: He coached from the very bottom, was it extended spring training,
- 5:59Speaker 3: was first manager all the way through, started as a
- 6:03Speaker 3: first base coach, so he's hit every single spot as
- 6:08Speaker 3: a manager. Played a little bit of minor leagues, as
- 6:10Speaker 3: I mentioned, but so he's done it, seen it all.
- 6:13Speaker 3: He knows each guys what they're kind of going through
- 6:17Speaker 3: because he's lived it a little bit. But he's also
- 6:19Speaker 3: had to coach in different aspects too to learn how
- 6:22Speaker 3: different players go about certain things. So he's well equipped
- 6:25Speaker 3: to deal with each individual guy in the way that
- 6:28Speaker 3: they kind of need to go about things, should go
- 6:31Speaker 3: about things, and what he's expecting, and he's got the
- 6:33Speaker 3: ability to communicate that to him. So as a manager,
- 6:36Speaker 3: if you can communicate and they know you have your
- 6:38Speaker 3: back and they also need to know all, he's going
- 6:41Speaker 3: to tell them the truth, like, hey, you're not gonna
- 6:42Speaker 3: be happy with this, but this is how we're going
- 6:44Speaker 3: to go this time, and you're more than welcome to
- 6:47Speaker 3: come in here and to say your piece. And he's
- 6:50Speaker 3: all for that, and that's what guys need because we're
- 6:53Speaker 3: all growing in and we all want to be the
- 6:54Speaker 3: best we can be. But he's also trying to put
- 6:56Speaker 3: you in the best situation, but also realizes he's running
- 6:59Speaker 3: an order organization and he's not the you know, he
- 7:02Speaker 3: doesn't own the team. He's sitting here putting charge of
- 7:05Speaker 3: managing the team and the players, and he's doing the
- 7:07Speaker 3: best he can to try to communicate those things.
- 7:09Speaker 2: And guys know that.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Do you think, Kyle, it's easier for Ali because he's young.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I mean, he's one of the youngest managers or was
- 7:17Speaker 1: anyway in a Major league baseball He's got a good
- 7:20Speaker 1: feel for how to reach the young players. Do you
- 7:23Speaker 1: see that.
- 7:27Speaker 4: I mean, I think that could be part of it.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I think Alie is a relational person. I think that
- 7:31Speaker 4: is one of his strengths and one of his big
- 7:34Speaker 4: personality traits that makes him a good manager. He understands,
- 7:39Speaker 4: like Lance said, I think being authentic and telling the truth.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Players and people can see right through that if you're
- 7:46Speaker 4: being the opposite. And he's good at having relationships and
- 7:49Speaker 4: managing relationships between the youngest players and the veteran players.
- 7:54Speaker 4: He's willing and able to have those conversations with veterans
- 7:56Speaker 4: when they need to be happened, when they need to happen,
- 7:59Speaker 4: and sometimes they can be tough conversations about whether it's
- 8:02Speaker 4: playing hard, you know, the mindset in you know, situations
- 8:06Speaker 4: when you're struggling going about certain things. Those can be tough,
- 8:08Speaker 4: tough conversations to have with veterans, and he's willing to
- 8:12Speaker 4: have them. So I think that's what kind of sets
- 8:14Speaker 4: him apart relationally. That makes a big difference. And we've
- 8:17Speaker 4: talked about this before, you know, before we got here
- 8:19Speaker 4: to Cardinal territory, is that he does a great job
- 8:22Speaker 4: handling the media and being kind of the intermediary between
- 8:26Speaker 4: the ownership and the team and the media. I know
- 8:31Speaker 4: there's been instances where people have kind of questioned how
- 8:33Speaker 4: he handles that in the media with players, but I
- 8:36Speaker 4: think after seeing it first end, he always has the
- 8:38Speaker 4: players back, especially when it's warranted. The only time I
- 8:42Speaker 4: feel like he might not have is when you know,
- 8:44Speaker 4: maybe there was a little bit of butting heads and
- 8:46Speaker 4: maybe it wasn't as warranted. But he just does a
- 8:49Speaker 4: great job of being the face of that franchise to
- 8:53Speaker 4: the media and taking responsibility, being accountable for his mistakes
- 8:59Speaker 4: while protecting us players. And I think that's one thing
- 9:01Speaker 4: that players really appreciate.
- 9:03Speaker 1: He spends a lot of time at it behind the scenes,
- 9:05Speaker 1: meets with rights holder media right, then he meets with
- 9:09Speaker 1: the writers, and then he meets separately with the radio
- 9:13Speaker 1: and TV people. I mean, that's he spends a good
- 9:16Speaker 1: deal of his portion. I like that. You got the
- 9:18Speaker 1: Tyler O'Neill butting heads thing in there.
- 9:20Speaker 2: That was a nice here you go.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Again noways you know, just for you to bring up
- 9:31Speaker 4: a time where all they went got into it at
- 9:33Speaker 4: the media and you have to name this, you know,
- 9:35Speaker 4: I mean I didn't.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Okay, every day, every day I go in there and
- 9:39Speaker 1: I tape an interview and he just beerates me. I
- 9:42Speaker 1: fight back a little bit, and it's all on tape. Now.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Luckily that tape is destroyed immediately because we would both
- 9:48Speaker 1: be uh, we would both be fired if you could
- 9:51Speaker 1: actually publicize the things that were said. Now that's said.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I also think he's adorable. War's the hat backwards, a
- 9:58Speaker 1: sweatshirt and everything, and kind of he does and I'll
- 10:01Speaker 1: say this because I love him, but he does kind
- 10:03Speaker 1: of walk around like he's got groceries under each ar
- 10:06Speaker 1: them because you know, he hits the gym.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Carry a little. I texted him, actually there was there
- 10:11Speaker 4: is a photo that came out around the All Star
- 10:13Speaker 4: break when he was announcing the All Stars, and he
- 10:15Speaker 4: was in a cutoff hoodie with a tight fitting shirt.
- 10:18Speaker 4: I kind of wonder if he'd been hitting the gym
- 10:20Speaker 4: a little bit. He definitely he walks around carry and suitcases,
- 10:22Speaker 4: but all joking aside and all joking aside. I've also
- 10:28Speaker 4: seen managers like Rob Thompson, who's able to connect with
- 10:31Speaker 4: every player we go old, you know, no matter where
- 10:34Speaker 4: they are in their career. So I don't think it's
- 10:37Speaker 4: just because he's young. I think he has the ability
- 10:39Speaker 4: to connect with every player one because of his journey,
- 10:42Speaker 4: like Lance said, but two, he cares about having relationships
- 10:46Speaker 4: and it's not just a job sitting in the manager's office.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Nd I want to bring up a former teammate of yours,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and again it's Newsy. Like we've on this show talked
- 10:58Speaker 1: about Jordan Walker, twenty three yar old guy, huge upside,
- 11:03Speaker 1: but you know, I had that first good year and
- 11:05Speaker 1: then kind of regressed and kind of swing got away
- 11:08Speaker 1: from him. But he had an interview with Derek Gould
- 11:12Speaker 1: where he was talking about his struggles last year, and
- 11:15Speaker 1: basically he said that he was stuck and he felt
- 11:21Speaker 1: sort of like a robot and he couldn't use his
- 11:24Speaker 1: natural ability or his strength that he was a statue
- 11:28Speaker 1: with his swing. And I'm just wondering because he went
- 11:33Speaker 1: down to the miners last year, did what he had
- 11:35Speaker 1: to do, came back up and started hitting again. I'll
- 11:38Speaker 1: start with Lance. You know, Jordan Walker. It seems to
- 11:41Speaker 1: me he's a young guy who got a lot fed
- 11:45Speaker 1: to him early on in terms of changing his swing
- 11:49Speaker 1: and everything, and he just had trouble sorting through it.
- 11:52Speaker 1: But he's twenty three, and to me, he's a guy
- 11:56Speaker 1: that you have to give another shot to.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Yeah, he's too young and he's got too much upside
- 12:01Speaker 3: not to give the shot to. The question that I
- 12:04Speaker 3: think Kyle and I both are going to have is
- 12:07Speaker 3: what what are they doing to simplify things for him?
- 12:09Speaker 3: I think the game got too quick for him with
- 12:11Speaker 3: too many changes. There's a reason why he was in
- 12:14Speaker 3: the big leagues the year before and was able to
- 12:16Speaker 3: have the success he has now, when you go full
- 12:19Speaker 3: overhaul of everything, what were we expecting? So when you
- 12:23Speaker 3: go full overhaul as a hitter, and next thing, you know,
- 12:26Speaker 3: the game gets quick. You get in between pitches and
- 12:28Speaker 3: you feel stuck at the play and then next thing
- 12:31Speaker 3: and when you're thinking too much, you're a robot and
- 12:33Speaker 3: then you're just kind of free swinging or you're taking
- 12:36Speaker 3: and you get locked up. So they got to figure
- 12:38Speaker 3: out how to make him. I think the main thing
- 12:40Speaker 3: for me is, all right, what's our swing going to be?
- 12:43Speaker 3: And then we're figuring out how to hit the ball
- 12:45Speaker 3: hard and then figuring out how to maybe we catch
- 12:47Speaker 3: it out front a little bit for instead of trying
- 12:49Speaker 3: to lift it.
- 12:50Speaker 2: He's a big guy.
- 12:51Speaker 3: He doesn't need to try to generate the big lift
- 12:54Speaker 3: and stuff like that to hit home runs. He needs
- 12:56Speaker 3: to drive the ball and catch the ball out front
- 12:58Speaker 3: a little bit more to hit home runs.
- 12:59Speaker 2: But doing so, he needs to be able to realize, hey,
- 13:02Speaker 2: I'm a big hitter.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I can hit fastball is the right center and then
- 13:06Speaker 3: if they catch a breaking ball out front, and that's
- 13:08Speaker 3: the ball I'm going to hit in the air and
- 13:09Speaker 3: pull for a home or to left field. So and
- 13:11Speaker 3: that's kind of you see the Aaron Judge comp right,
- 13:13Speaker 3: Everyone's talk about him body size this and that. That's
- 13:17Speaker 3: kind of what Aaron did. He figured out how to, Hey,
- 13:19Speaker 3: I'm going to make sure I can drive the ball
- 13:21Speaker 3: to right center, and if I get anywhere else out front,
- 13:24Speaker 3: I'm long enough and strong enough to where I can
- 13:26Speaker 3: clip a breaking ball out in front of me. So
- 13:28Speaker 3: they got to simplify a little bit, and then the
- 13:32Speaker 3: in between goes away. Also when you do more homework,
- 13:35Speaker 3: I think he needs to be more of a student
- 13:37Speaker 3: of the game when it comes to the pitchers you're facing,
- 13:39Speaker 3: instead of Hey, here's my swing path? Where's my swing
- 13:42Speaker 3: plath on playing blah blah blahs. What's the picture doing
- 13:45Speaker 3: to me? How can I take barrel to the ball
- 13:47Speaker 3: and hit the ball hard as I can? I think
- 13:50Speaker 3: if he does that where it says, hey, here's the
- 13:52Speaker 3: pictures stuff, here's the stuff I'm probably going to see
- 13:55Speaker 3: where I'm going to see it, and then how do
- 13:56Speaker 3: I take my best swing to that instead of only
- 13:58Speaker 3: worrying about his swing path because pitchers aren't trying to
- 14:01Speaker 3: find his swing path. They're doing their thing, and they're
- 14:03Speaker 3: pitching the way that they think they can get him out.
- 14:06Speaker 3: And if he's only worried about his swingpath, then he's
- 14:08Speaker 3: got no chance in hell to hit what they're throwing.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Cole, You're not, I mean, so tell me what.
- 14:14Speaker 4: You agree, Yeah, I agree, I think one. I think
- 14:18Speaker 4: he's gotten to a spot sounds like where that interview
- 14:22Speaker 4: he's being pretty open and honest about what he was feeling.
- 14:25Speaker 4: I've been in this situation in twenty seventeen where that
- 14:28Speaker 4: off season, going into it, I overhauled my delivery a
- 14:31Speaker 4: little bit, changed my arm path to try and stay
- 14:33Speaker 4: healthy because I was having some arm sore on us
- 14:35Speaker 4: and the beginning of the year was the worst nine
- 14:38Speaker 4: starts in my career, and I tried to walk around
- 14:41Speaker 4: with this false confidence, making sure like, Hey, everything's fine,
- 14:44Speaker 4: it'll be okay. That doesn't work. That gets exposed at
- 14:48Speaker 4: the big leagues pretty quick. So I say that because
- 14:50Speaker 4: it seems like he's gotten to a point where to me,
- 14:53Speaker 4: those statements sound like I really wasn't confident in what
- 14:57Speaker 4: I was doing, you know, and that's why you lose
- 14:59Speaker 4: that fluidity, lose the flow of what you're doing because
- 15:02Speaker 4: you're not really you're trying to feel your way through it.
- 15:04Speaker 4: So the fact that he's making those statements, I think
- 15:06Speaker 4: is a good sign because I think he's probably realizing
- 15:09Speaker 4: that maybe he can, you know, shift that mindset a
- 15:11Speaker 4: little bit. But preparation is huge for confidence. I grew
- 15:14Speaker 4: with Lance hundred percent. You have to be prepared if
- 15:17Speaker 4: you want to be confident. But I think I think
- 15:23Speaker 4: it takes a little bit to figure out who you
- 15:24Speaker 4: are in the big leagues for most players, and I
- 15:27Speaker 4: think if he can figure out kind of the type
- 15:30Speaker 4: of hitter he wants to be or maybe needs to
- 15:32Speaker 4: be in his mind, that will help and stick to
- 15:35Speaker 4: that and become that player the best you can. But man,
- 15:40Speaker 4: you can kind of tell in twenty four and twenty
- 15:42Speaker 4: five there was some lack of confidence and trying to
- 15:45Speaker 4: worry about Once again, I've been there, you worry about
- 15:47Speaker 4: getting sent down, and when you start worry about getting
- 15:49Speaker 4: sent down, you're not playing confident, And sometimes being sent
- 15:52Speaker 4: down can be one of the best things. I was
- 15:55Speaker 4: nearly asking to be sent down in twenty seventeen because
- 15:58Speaker 4: I just looked around and I felt like I was
- 16:00Speaker 4: reason we were losing every five days. So if he
- 16:02Speaker 4: feels like he's in a situation where man, I'm the
- 16:05Speaker 4: guy that left five more guys on base today, well
- 16:07Speaker 4: he's gonna be in this kind of lack of confidence
- 16:09Speaker 4: looking around, kind of wondering when the meeting with the
- 16:12Speaker 4: manager's coming, So I think it's good that he's in
- 16:16Speaker 4: this place. You got to find a way to be
- 16:18Speaker 4: confident even when you're struggling. Because even Aaron Judge, when
- 16:21Speaker 4: we do our homework on Aaron Judge and you see
- 16:23Speaker 4: him swinging at pitches, he doesn't rollly swing at probably
- 16:25Speaker 4: going through a little funk and you know that there's
- 16:27Speaker 4: a little bit of hole there until he finds that
- 16:29Speaker 4: confidence again. So Jordan's not the only good hitter that
- 16:32Speaker 4: goes through this, and I think you give him time.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, he's only twenty three, and I hope they keep
- 16:39Speaker 1: it simple with him. He went down last year and
- 16:42Speaker 1: he talked about working with the double A hitting coach
- 16:45Speaker 1: in springfield and he said moved his hands away from
- 16:48Speaker 1: his body a little, and every movement that wasn't designed
- 16:52Speaker 1: to move towards the baseball right eliminated them. But everything
- 16:56Speaker 1: has to be moving towards the baseball. And he had
- 16:59Speaker 1: three zero four in July and then the rest of
- 17:02Speaker 1: the year kind of went back down. But it's in there.
- 17:05Speaker 1: We've seen it and hopefully they can unlock that again
- 17:08Speaker 1: for Jordan Walker. Time for a quick break. You are
- 17:11Speaker 1: watching Cardinal territory.

- 18:13Speaker 1: Fab Nice back with Kyle Gibson and Lance Linn. Final
- 18:21Speaker 1: topic on cardinal territory. The thing that makes baseball great
- 18:26Speaker 1: in my opinion, outside of the games and everything, but
- 18:29Speaker 1: like the hot stove, people, every little nugget that's dropped,
- 18:32Speaker 1: even if it's speculation, people love that, right. They love
- 18:36Speaker 1: to read about where this guy's gonna end up? Can
- 18:38Speaker 1: we get that guy? I think that's what makes baseball
- 18:42Speaker 1: so great and being a fan so great, because it's
- 18:45Speaker 1: a lot to take in and you're interested in your
- 18:47Speaker 1: team and you want to see them make the move.
- 18:49Speaker 1: So you guys have been through that as a player.
- 18:52Speaker 1: You've been through waiting to see where you're gonna end up,
- 18:55Speaker 1: who you're gonna sign with. My question to you will
- 18:58Speaker 1: go back to you lance on this is of all
- 19:01Speaker 1: the stuff that's out there in your experience, either knowing
- 19:05Speaker 1: what a team is going to do or in your
- 19:06Speaker 1: own personal experience when you were looking for a landing
- 19:09Speaker 1: spot or where you were going to be traded to
- 19:13Speaker 1: how much of what you here read see on social
- 19:18Speaker 1: media is accurate.
- 19:22Speaker 3: This time of year and mostly is hearshay would be
- 19:26Speaker 3: would be like, so let's say twenty percent when you
- 19:30Speaker 3: get closer to nothing right in my opinion, until the
- 19:34Speaker 3: winter meetings right now, everything's just speculation. It's like here's
- 19:37Speaker 3: here's our ideas. So these are one hundred percent ideas
- 19:40Speaker 3: of front offices right now. But the probability of them
- 19:43Speaker 3: happening and lining up with trades and and this and
- 19:46Speaker 3: that are you know? Are are? Are you know twenty percent?
- 19:50Speaker 3: As the year goes on, it's fifty to fifty. You know,
- 19:53Speaker 3: there's a lot of a lot of people that here
- 19:56Speaker 3: in the little nuggets that are are fifty percent true,
- 20:00Speaker 3: I would say, as the year goes on, and it's
- 20:02Speaker 3: kind of fun to be a part of it. And
- 20:05Speaker 3: it's you know, like when Kyle and I were going
- 20:07Speaker 3: through free agency or trade deadlines, we'd always get texts
- 20:09Speaker 3: and calls, like some of the times we were texting
- 20:13Speaker 3: calling each other like this truer You're like, no, no way,
- 20:16Speaker 3: uh not happening, and uh so it's kind of funny
- 20:19Speaker 3: to see who says why.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And then the more that we.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Were involved in the game, the more we realized you
- 20:26Speaker 3: can notice who was maybe the guy who or the
- 20:30Speaker 3: or the area that was given the most false information
- 20:33Speaker 3: and you just wanted not to pay attention to it.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I don't blame the reporters, Kyle, because it's their job
- 20:40Speaker 1: to put stuff out there that people are interested in,
- 20:43Speaker 1: and some of it, to me isn't wrong. But as
- 20:46Speaker 1: I understand it, and I dig deep on this stuff,
- 20:48Speaker 1: Lambs knows that. Right if you if you work for
- 20:52Speaker 1: a team you're the assistant general manager, or even if
- 20:54Speaker 1: you're working for the president of baseball ops, you have
- 20:58Speaker 1: a bunch of guys who might be interested did with
- 21:00Speaker 1: each team, and so you read off the list just
- 21:03Speaker 1: to see where they are, and all of a sudden,
- 21:05Speaker 1: it's like, this team is inquiring about that guy. Yeah,
- 21:08Speaker 1: he's one of ten guys ahead on the list. How
- 21:11Speaker 1: do you see it?
- 21:12Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 21:13Speaker 4: I mean, I don't necessarily blame the media unless something
- 21:18Speaker 4: is reported as fact, when it's probably easy to confirm
- 21:23Speaker 4: that it's not fact by you know, the player or
- 21:26Speaker 4: something like that. More than likely, anytime you're seeing information
- 21:29Speaker 4: put out there, as hearsays Lance is saying, which is
- 21:32Speaker 4: a great way to put it, it's because they've heard
- 21:34Speaker 4: somebody say it, right, Like, they're not just making up
- 21:37Speaker 4: this information. It doesn't do Ken Rosenthal any good to
- 21:40Speaker 4: make up that the Cardinals might sign Zack Efflin right
- 21:43Speaker 4: like that. That doesn't do it any good. Now if
- 21:45Speaker 4: he gets a nugget from somebody that directs him in that,
- 21:50Speaker 4: you know, that's one thing. So I think it's interesting
- 21:53Speaker 4: to read it because you know, for the for the
- 21:54Speaker 4: most part, like they're hearing it from someone that those
- 21:58Speaker 4: things could be happening in. I think there's some instances
- 22:02Speaker 4: where it's awesome, and then there's other instances, especially as
- 22:06Speaker 4: it gets close to confirming things that I know. There
- 22:08Speaker 4: were a few times that my agent would be, you know,
- 22:11Speaker 4: contacted about where I was signing, and I made my
- 22:14Speaker 4: decision and I said, hey, will you hold off on
- 22:17Speaker 4: confirming this with anybody until I can at least call
- 22:19Speaker 4: my family. You know, it was big around my retirement,
- 22:21Speaker 4: you know, he was he was not fielding phone calls
- 22:24Speaker 4: because I wanted to tell the people that I wanted
- 22:26Speaker 4: to tell that I was retiring before it gets out there.
- 22:28Speaker 4: So that's probably the only thing that's kind of weird.
- 22:30Speaker 4: When you hear it on the radio that you're being
- 22:32Speaker 4: traded to the Philadelphia Phillies and then you start getting
- 22:34Speaker 4: phone calls, You're like, oh, I guess I'm getting traded
- 22:36Speaker 4: to the Phillies.
- 22:38Speaker 1: So for the reker, like I think Saint Louis has
- 22:41Speaker 1: a very good responsible media group. They're not dying to
- 22:46Speaker 1: break every single story. That's their job, but they're not
- 22:48Speaker 1: going to make stuff up. Certainly, the Rosenthals, the Passes,
- 22:52Speaker 1: those guys, right, they're Morosi, they're responsible. I'm not even
- 22:56Speaker 1: talking about those guys, hey man. But Lance, there are times,
- 23:01Speaker 1: and I'm sure you're aware of it, where agents might
- 23:04Speaker 1: put out a little smoke screen about this or that
- 23:08Speaker 1: to try to gain leverage either for their for their
- 23:11Speaker 1: own player or leverage maybe against another player.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you you know you see this this suitor.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Uh, just because they had a conversation. It's like they're
- 23:21Speaker 3: in talks. I guess technically, if you've had the conversation,
- 23:24Speaker 3: you're in talks with someone. So there's a fine line
- 23:27Speaker 3: for a lot of different things. Baseball's a very much
- 23:31Speaker 3: always worked in the gray areas of the world. But
- 23:34Speaker 3: like Saint Louis media, they couldn't even pick up that
- 23:36Speaker 3: Kyle and I were doing a physical the same day
- 23:38Speaker 3: together the year that we signed. It's like, man, you
- 23:42Speaker 3: just don't have anybody hanging out at hospitals waiting for
- 23:45Speaker 3: us to get an MRI machines. I was surprised by that.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Cale. Your experience was good with the Saint Louis media,
- 23:52Speaker 1: wasn't it.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say, you know, for the most part,
- 23:56Speaker 4: there was a couple of the on field people that
- 23:59Speaker 4: you know, we have an issue with the very now
- 24:00Speaker 4: and then just being a little bit company in the
- 24:02Speaker 4: locker room. But other than that, it was pretty good.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I mean, oh, a shot of claims, I get it,
- 24:06Speaker 1: A shot at claim's, I get it.
- 24:08Speaker 4: No, I mean no, I think I think it was.
- 24:13Speaker 2: It was.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Saint Louis to me, is a bigger market than it
- 24:16Speaker 4: probably gets credit for, and the Cardinals are the big
- 24:20Speaker 4: deal in town. You know, the Blues are big because
- 24:21Speaker 4: of you know, winning the Cup and being a big
- 24:24Speaker 4: hockey town too, but Saint Louis is a baseball town.
- 24:27Speaker 4: So I think that media covers the Cardinals well, they
- 24:30Speaker 4: cover them fairly, And yeah, I think my experience was
- 24:33Speaker 4: was pretty good.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Well, gentlemen, that brings us to the end of the program.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I thank you. We will see you this week with
- 24:41Speaker 1: fresh new topics. I hope you're happy with the ones
- 24:44Speaker 1: I brought to the table for today. But that's gonna
- 24:47Speaker 1: do it for this edition of Cardinal territory, we'll see
- 24:50Speaker 1: you next time, and hopefully that episode won't suck.
