- 0:00Good morning and a warm welcome to your show, Sunny Mornings in Boston.

- 0:12vibe.
- 0:13I'm your host, Melissa, and it's Friday, February 16th.
- 0:18You'll be interested to know, 67 years ago today, in 1957, the UK's Toddler's Truce,
- 0:25a TV blackout period from 6 to 7 p.m., ended.
- 0:31Implemented post-World War II, this BBC policy allowed parents to manage their kids without
- 0:37TV distractions.
- 0:40The BBC, then the sole broadcaster, aimed to foster child development and family harmony,
- 0:46while also saving costs.
- 0:49However, the 1955 launch of ITV, another public broadcast network which relied on advertising
- 0:56for funding, challenged this practice.
- 1:00ITV saw the truce as unfair, losing them valuable advertising time.
- 1:07Studies by Hilde Himmelweit and Mark Abrams revealed children were watching more adult
- 1:12content and often preferred ITV over BBC.
- 1:18This shift led to the truce's end, with the BBC airing the rock and roll show, Six by
- 1:24Special, rather than radio silence.
- 1:27And now let's check out the weather in the Boston area.

- 3:30Sunny mornings send you!
- 3:34Local news, Boston's financial stability faces a significant threat due to a drop in
- 3:41commercial property values largely caused by the ongoing popularity of remote work and
- 3:47high interest rates.
- 3:49This situation, described as an economic act of God in a report by the Boston Policy Institute
- 3:56and Tufts University, could lead to a $1.5 billion deficit in commercial property taxes
- 4:03by 2029.
- 4:06With commercial taxes comprising a major part of Boston's revenue, the city must consider
- 4:11difficult solutions such as raising residential taxes, introducing new taxes, or reducing
- 4:17services to avoid a serious financial crisis.
- 4:27Now on to sports.
- 4:29Caitlin Clark has made history by becoming the all-time leading scorer for Division I
- 4:35women's basketball.
- 4:37In a game against Michigan, Clark scored the record-breaking point early in the first quarter
- 4:43with a long three-pointer, elevating her total to 3,521.
- 4:50This achievement places her third in the all-time NCAA scoring list for both men and women.
- 4:58Beyond her scoring prowess, Clark is also known for her all-around skills, being the
- 5:03first Division I player with over 3,000 points, 900 assists, and 800 rebounds.
- 5:11Her impact extends beyond the court, significantly boosting attendance at games and contributing
- 5:16to the growth of women's basketball.
- 5:19This remarkable feat underscores Clark's exceptional talent and influence in the sport.
- 5:26On to the NBA.
- 5:28The Celtics were off last night, and we have the All-Star Gang coming up this weekend.
- 5:34Last night in national hockey, the Bruins at home fell to the crack in 4-1.
- 5:40Not much offense to speak of in the last two games.
- 5:44The Bruins are at home again on Saturday to play the Kings.
- 5:50In top news, NIT scientists have made a groundbreaking discovery in the behavior of heat in superfluid
- 5:58quantum gas, observing for the first time the phenomenon known as second sound.
- 6:05Unlike typical materials where heat spreads out, in superfluid quantum gases, heat moves
- 6:11in waves.
- 6:13This was visualized using a novel thermography technique that tracks temperature changes
- 6:18via radio frequencies.
- 6:22This research, important for materials science and astronomy, could shed light on high-temperature
- 6:27superconductors and the physics of neutron stars.
- 6:31The findings offering new insights into the unique properties of superfluids were recently
- 6:37published in the Journal of Science.
- 6:40In business news, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic indicates that interest rate cuts anticipated
- 6:48by investors may not occur until at least the third quarter of 2024.
- 6:55This revised timeline is earlier than his initial forecast, prompted by faster than
- 7:00expected inflation slowdown.
- 7:03Bostic anticipates two rate cuts in 2024, but emphasizes caution, prioritizing true
- 7:10signals of inflation decline over volatility.
- 7:15Despite the easing of inflation in January, it remains above expectations, with consumer
- 7:21prices up 3.1% year over year.
- 7:24The Fed's main focus is bringing inflation down to its 2% target.
- 7:30Bostic stresses the need for a cautious approach to rate cuts to avoid reigniting inflation
- 7:36and advises against relying on past economic patterns to predict current monetary policy
- 7:41impacts, highlighting the uniqueness of current economic conditions.
- 7:47In crypto movement, Bitcoin is currently just over $52,000, Ethereum is about $2,800 now,
- 7:56and Solana is $114.
- 8:02Moving on to a more local vibe.
- 8:04In our community spotlight on health and wellness, we are working with a national Pilates studio
- 8:11to bring you some free classes, so listen up.
- 8:15Check out Club Pilates with several locations in the Boston area.
- 8:20Pilates presents a comprehensive wellness approach, cultivating strength, reducing tension,
- 8:26and elevating mental well-being.
- 8:29Scientific research affirms its benefits.

- 8:39Pangham, Brookline, and Framingham.
- 8:42Just be sure to tell them, Sunny Morning sent you by.
- 8:47And now, back to the show.
- 8:51Let's talk tech.
- 8:53Apple's latest TVOS beta code hints at the development of two new HomePod devices with
- 8:59screens, one nearing production.
- 9:03The code reveals a new TVOS device, code named Z314, featuring an A15 processor, a significant
- 9:11upgrade from the current HomePod's S7, and Mini's S5 processors.
- 9:17This implies enhanced capabilities beyond audio, likely supporting a display.
- 9:23Previous leaks showed Apple testing TVOS on the iPad Mini, aligning with rumors of a larger
- 9:29display HomePod.
- 9:32The lineup may include a model similar to the current generation, and a more versatile
- 9:36one akin to Amazon's Echo Show.
- 9:39Respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts a 7-inch model launch in early 2024, marking
- 9:46a step in Apple's revamped Smart Home strategy.
- 9:52And in entertainment news, Dune, Part 2, is receiving high praise in its initial reactions,
- 9:59drawing favorable comparisons to iconic films like The Empire Strikes Back and The Lord
- 10:05of the Rings.
- 10:08Critics are particularly impressed with Zendaya's performance as Chani, which is described as
- 10:14central to the movie.
- 10:17Austin Butler's portrayal of the new antagonist Fade Ratha is also being highlighted as a
- 10:22standout, transformative performance.
- 10:26The film, directed by Denis Villanueva, continues the story of Timothy Chalamets, Paula Treaties,
- 10:33and features a mix of returning and new cast members.
- 10:38The sequel's battle sequences and visual storytelling are being likened to the works
- 10:43of Peter Jackson, George Lucas, and David Lean, suggesting a cinematic experience on
- 10:49par with some of the most celebrated sci-fi and fantasy epics.
- 10:54Dune, Part 2, is set to release in theaters on March 1, further expanding the ambitious
- 11:01adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic novel.
- 11:05Well, alrighty folks, it's time for the quote of the day.
- 11:10And today, our quote comes from the all-time leading scorer for Division 1 women's basketball,
- 11:16Caitlin Clark.
- 11:17What were you thinking in that moment, in that timeout?
- 11:20Just grateful, thankful to be surrounded by people.
- 11:23To be in a city that supports women's basketball so much, be surrounded by my best friends
- 11:27and people that want to see me be great and push me to be great every single day.
- 11:32Congratulations Caitlin, you deserve it.
- 11:36And that's a wrap for this week.
