- 0:00Speaker 1: Can you just talk about your defensive philosophy, how you
- 0:03Speaker 1: want the team to play here.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I want us to be first and foremost fairly
- 0:08Speaker 2: prepared and a group of guys who who plays hard,
- 0:11Speaker 2: with great effort, great toughness, but we want to be aggressive.
- 0:14Speaker 2: We want to put you know, mentally and physical pressure
- 0:17Speaker 2: on opposing offense and get after.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Is there a particular scheme that you, you know, want
- 0:24Speaker 1: to embrace throughout your coaching or does it kind of
- 0:26Speaker 1: depend on the team that you have in front of you.
- 0:29Speaker 2: It's a great question. Schematically, we'll be multiple. We'll base
- 0:32Speaker 2: mostly out of a four down on normal downs, and
- 0:34Speaker 2: we'll get in an up front on some past situations
- 0:38Speaker 2: and from a cover standpoint, we'll be multiple.
- 0:41Speaker 1: What are your impressions so far the defensive players that
- 0:45Speaker 1: you have here. Are you excited to see what they
- 0:48Speaker 1: can do?
- 0:49Speaker 3: Yeah? I've been fired up.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I mean my impression is on our guys, you know,
- 0:53Speaker 2: since the time we got here in early January, is it.
- 0:56Speaker 3: We've come together in a really short amount of time and.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I think got a group of guys that it's excited to,
- 1:02Speaker 2: you know, prove who they are and who we are.
- 1:05Speaker 2: And they've been working really hard, so excited about the
- 1:09Speaker 2: work they put in, and I'm really excited to get
- 1:12Speaker 2: started with the camp here. As a coaching staff, with
- 1:14Speaker 2: the expectations that you put on yourselves, you know, you're
- 1:16Speaker 2: thrown in and you've got to get this thing going fast,
- 1:19Speaker 2: like you know, where the expectations.
- 1:20Speaker 3: You know, and the learning curve for the group. That's
- 1:23Speaker 3: a great question.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I think, you know, as competitors and certainly coach Candle's vision,
- 1:28Speaker 2: we want to win, the expectations to win, and but
- 1:31Speaker 2: it's a process to it, and we talk about getting
- 1:34Speaker 2: better every single day, and so I think as long
- 1:37Speaker 2: as we you know, we we try to turn over
- 1:40Speaker 2: every stone to get better every single day and improve,
- 1:45Speaker 2: I think will be where we need to be.
- 1:49Speaker 1: If anyone market the fan understands there's not a little
- 1:53Speaker 1: an excess all as press.
- 1:55Speaker 2: What do you think that person's gonna notice that you're
- 1:58Speaker 2: watching your brand? Yeah, hopefully hopefully they're They're Washington group
- 2:03Speaker 2: that play is really hard, looks fast really you know
- 2:06Speaker 2: from the fan perspective, and is uh playing aggressive of
- 2:10Speaker 2: course with so.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Many kids to look at speed up the evaluation process
- 2:16Speaker 1: that you used.
- 2:16Speaker 3: To great, What do you mean, what do you mean
- 2:18Speaker 3: by that, Well.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You have so many new players out there that you've
- 2:21Speaker 1: got to you gotta get him in position a way
- 2:24Speaker 1: to go, maybe a little quicker than used to.
- 2:27Speaker 3: That's a great question there.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I mean, obviously we have a lot of newcomers coming
- 2:31Speaker 2: coming with the new staff, and but I think the
- 2:34Speaker 2: evaluation is always thorough. I mean we're we're looking, you know,
- 2:37Speaker 2: our coaches on defense, you know, coach Schaeffer, coach Chance,
- 2:40Speaker 2: coach Anderson, coach Jacobs, coach you know, coach Jenkins.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Inside.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I mean, everybody's looking at their position with a you know,
- 2:46Speaker 2: a fine tooth comb, looking for things we're doing well,
- 2:50Speaker 2: but certainly things we need to correct and get better
- 2:52Speaker 2: the next day, every single time we're out, which is.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Obviously a great opportunity for you or.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Personally, but we'll think you want to work for a
- 2:58Speaker 1: coach and what'll make you say? What sort of like
- 3:00Speaker 1: what's he likes the boss?
- 3:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great question. Coach Candle is awesome.
- 3:04Speaker 2: And when he reached out and we talked about the opportunity,
- 3:07Speaker 2: I was excited because of you know, we're both guys
- 3:10Speaker 2: from Ohio, so I've known a lot about coach Candell,
- 3:14Speaker 2: seeing him do some really good things at the University
- 3:16Speaker 2: of Toledo and we had a chance to square off
- 3:19Speaker 2: against them in a bowl game when I was a
- 3:21Speaker 2: linebacker's coach at Pittsburgh and he was the head coach
- 3:23Speaker 2: there at Toledo, and was really able to see, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 2: how his team came out with passion and energy, how
- 3:32Speaker 2: he prepared a game plan offensively, and just how he
- 3:36Speaker 2: conducted his business. And I've always been impressed with him,
- 3:38Speaker 2: and so talking with him, you know, to make this decision,
- 3:42Speaker 2: I was fired up. I think we have you know,
- 3:44Speaker 2: similar backgrounds and and uh program builders and guys that
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, do things from a relationship standpoint. I had
- 3:50Speaker 2: been a part of a staff with Mark d Antonio,
- 3:53Speaker 2: who I started playing for Cincinnati and was with at
- 3:55Speaker 2: Michigan State. And paton Ardozzi, who ran a similar model
- 4:00Speaker 2: as far as a long term, stable program where you
- 4:02Speaker 2: bring guys in and develop them and treat them right
- 4:04Speaker 2: and have good relationships. And guys that have played for
- 4:07Speaker 2: coach Candle and coach with coach Kandle had similar experiences.
- 4:11Speaker 3: So I'm very excited about, you know, the program he's building.
- 4:15Speaker 2: The program we're building together and the way he does,
- 4:20Speaker 2: you know, it's a relationship oriented and we're gonna take
- 4:22Speaker 2: care of our guys and put them in an environment
- 4:24Speaker 2: where they can get better every single days.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Paths with Yukon football over the years, coaching with Yukon, yes,
- 4:31Speaker 3: I have what were your impressions of it then? And
- 4:34Speaker 3: you know what what was what was attractive to this child?
- 4:36Speaker 3: You well us I grew up in Big East football.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I played again ver Cincinnati as a linebacker there and
- 4:41Speaker 2: trying to tackle Donald Brown, and you know when Yukon
- 4:46Speaker 2: was doing some really good things in the Big East Conference.
- 4:48Speaker 2: So I have a tremendous mind of respect. You know,
- 4:50Speaker 2: we came up to the rent and lost, and I
- 4:52Speaker 2: remember trying to.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Chase that guy around all day.
- 4:55Speaker 2: It was a tough task and so a lot of
- 4:58Speaker 2: respect for Yukon and and obviously I took notice of
- 5:01Speaker 2: what they were able to do the last couple of
- 5:02Speaker 2: years here and win a lot of ball games under
- 5:04Speaker 2: coach Mora and then having a chance to come to
- 5:08Speaker 2: campus and kind of see all the resources and you know,
- 5:11Speaker 2: our athletic director in the vision he had and what's
- 5:15Speaker 2: going on up here.
- 5:16Speaker 3: It's an exciting place.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I think our resources here give us everything we need
- 5:20Speaker 2: to do to be successful.
- 5:22Speaker 1: To be a good defense, you have to play together.
- 5:24Speaker 1: How difficult does that bring in so many new pieces
- 5:27Speaker 1: or or is it like that every year when you
- 5:29Speaker 1: start you're just trying to kind of pull in new
- 5:32Speaker 1: players into new roles.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think we have to come together,
- 5:36Speaker 2: like you said, and you know, we were talking as
- 5:38Speaker 2: a unit today.
- 5:39Speaker 3: You think about all the.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Champions and all the major sports, right they all have
- 5:43Speaker 2: elite defenses. Where you're talking about Spain who just won
- 5:45Speaker 2: the World Cup, for the Seahawks who won the Super Bowl,
- 5:47Speaker 2: the Knicks who won the you know, NBA Finals. I mean,
- 5:52Speaker 2: these teams have great defenses who come together. They're able
- 5:55Speaker 2: to have tactical flexibility and players who want to be
- 6:00Speaker 2: you know, selfless.
- 6:01Speaker 3: To get the job done. And so, like you.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Said, we bring a lot of guys in from a
- 6:04Speaker 2: lot of different places, but we've met with each of
- 6:06Speaker 2: them individually to make sure they're wired the right way.
- 6:09Speaker 3: They're good people first and foremost.
- 6:10Speaker 2: They want to work hard, they want to work together,
- 6:12Speaker 2: and they want to collect the outcome.
- 6:13Speaker 3: They all want to win. And I think when we win.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Individuals will recognized, but I think it's team perst mentality.
- 6:19Speaker 1: So you see the pieces there right now to be
- 6:21Speaker 1: a good defense or a very good defense.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Absolutely, and we're working hard every day to get even better.
- 6:27Speaker 1: What have you seen Cavon Sherman, Sorry.
- 6:29Speaker 2: John, Yeah, Kveon Sherman's he's a He's a man in
- 6:32Speaker 2: the middle, and he's confident, he's aggressive, and he's worked
- 6:36Speaker 2: hard to pick up the nuance of the scheme to
- 6:38Speaker 2: get us lined up or front or or blitz mechanics,
- 6:41Speaker 2: and he's working working to get better every day.
- 6:43Speaker 3: So excited about Caveon.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I think he's he's a he's a physical specimen and
- 6:49Speaker 2: he's also an intelligent football player. Coach, can you talk
- 6:52Speaker 2: about his leadership and how he's you know, helping instill
- 6:54Speaker 2: the culture.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Obviously that's super in the super important, you know, part
- 6:58Speaker 3: of your one GID. Yeah. Critical.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I think we have a good number of guys defensively
- 7:03Speaker 2: that come with coach Candle from Toledo that have you know,
- 7:07Speaker 2: instilled the initial culture here of what they had at Toledo,
- 7:11Speaker 2: and I think Kveon being a centerpiece of that who
- 7:13Speaker 2: had success at Toledo with the mainstay in that program
- 7:18Speaker 2: and did some things, you know, within the locker room
- 7:22Speaker 2: to make sure guys understand what it takes. And I
- 7:24Speaker 2: think he's done that here and so we're excited about him.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And not only has you know.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Locker ship leadership off the field, but certainly on the
- 7:31Speaker 2: field in those in those big moments and tough situations
- 7:35Speaker 2: where we have to be calm under pressure. He can
- 7:38Speaker 2: help us in the certain circumstances because he's been.
- 7:40Speaker 1: There's what's the mentality that you bring as as a
- 7:44Speaker 1: linebacker in college? And uh, somebody who've got a shot
- 7:47Speaker 1: at the pros. I mean, are you one who wants
- 7:50Speaker 1: your defense attacking all the time? Are you going to
- 7:53Speaker 1: be a lot of different blitzes? I mean what's your approach?
- 7:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's a great my personality. I'm an underdog, overchiever.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Did that by preparation and hard work, and I think
- 8:02Speaker 2: hopefully that's what you see a group is prepared who
- 8:04Speaker 2: works hard. I think from a schematic standpoint, we're gonna
- 8:07Speaker 2: have to be bounced. I think the element of surprise
- 8:09Speaker 2: is one back victory since the beginning of time, and
- 8:11Speaker 2: so certainly we're gonna attack what, We're gonna have ways
- 8:13Speaker 2: to make it look like we're attacking and be able
- 8:15Speaker 2: to drop out and do some complimentary things as well.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Ran as someone who actually played at the Rent as
- 8:20Speaker 2: a visitor, what do you tell the new guys about
- 8:23Speaker 2: the potential atmosphere because you played from some good crowds?
- 8:26Speaker 3: Absolutely?
- 8:28Speaker 2: Absolutely, I think the Rent's a great place, great home
- 8:30Speaker 2: field advantage, and we're going to certainly use that on
- 8:33Speaker 2: money downs on third down to our advantage to get
- 8:36Speaker 2: the crowd up and get them intense and excited, and
- 8:39Speaker 2: I think that noise effect will help us, you know,
- 8:41Speaker 2: and put some more mental pressure on that quarterback to
- 8:45Speaker 2: deliver and you know, convert first downs.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Where you to graduate University Cincinna. What year did you graduate?
- 8:51Speaker 3: Oh wait, two thousand and eight?
- 8:52Speaker 1: Okay, after week one, regardless of
