Once upon a time, newspapers had their own patriotic theme songs—over 500 of them! These marches, commissioned to boost civic pride and community spirit, were performed by local bands like the Columbus Dispatch Newsboys’ Band. Even John Philip Sousa wrote one for a newspaper contest in 1888, which went viral. Today, reporter Jim Beckerman revived the tradition with a new march for USA Today, celebrating journalism’s vital role in democracy—and it’ll ring again for America’s 250th anniversary.
