- 1:14Don Mahaller doing the catching batting seven.
- 1:17Jose Fagan batting eight and playing short stuff.
- 1:21And Jack Sanford will be doing the pitching.
- 1:25So that's the starting lineup for the Giants.
- 1:28Jack Sanford will be the starting pitcher.
- 1:3124-7, Jack has won two and lost one with the Dodgers this season.
- 1:36It's 14-7 on his lifetime.
- 1:38And this will be his fifth start against Los Angeles this year.
- 1:42He's won one and Dodgers' setting.
- 1:43He lost to them May 22nd 5-1.
- 1:45He beat them once in Candle Creek Park 10-3 on July 7th.
- 1:48Here on September 3rd 7-3 and that was his 20th win.
- 1:52His last start he beat Houston 11-5.
- 1:55Now it's the 29th of September.
- 1:56He went five on the third inning giving up five runs on eight hits.
- 1:59He walked five for the first time failed to strike out a batter.
- 2:02He's won more games than any Giants.
- 2:03Henderson's Carl Hubbell won 26 back in 1936.
- 2:07And he can equal that mark but he can come close to it with a victory out here today as he is 24-7.
- 2:14For the Los Angeles Dodgers leading off and playing shortstop, Maury Will.
- 2:20Jim Gilliam is batting in the number two position playing second base.
- 2:25Duke Snyder in left field batting number three.
- 2:28Tommy Davis playing third base and hitting in the number four spot.
- 2:33Wally Moon is playing at first base batting fifth.
- 2:38Brad Howard hitting number six and playing in right field.
- 2:41John Roseborough doing the catching and batting seventh.
- 2:45And playing in center field hitting number eight is Wally Davis pitching and batting ninth.
- 2:55Don Drysdale.
- 2:56For Drysdale with a 25-9 record.
- 3:00And a 3-1 record against the Giants this year.
- 3:05He's 20 and 14 lifetime against more lifetime wins against the Giants than against any other National League club.
- 3:12Has two complete games and five starts versus the Giants.
- 3:15A one-and-nothing record in two starts versus the Giants here.
- 3:21That was an 11-1 victory.
- 3:23This is his first start against Jack Mantra.
- 3:25So the first time that the two hard-going right-handers oppose each other.
- 3:28The umpires for today's game talking now with Duke Snyder and Whitey Lockman at home plate.
- 3:32It'll be Al Barlich behind the plate.
- 3:34Dusty Bodgers at first base.
- 3:36Augie Donatelli at second.
- 3:38And Jaco Conlon at third.
- 3:47Giants found the regular season 1-3 and lost six against the Dodgers here at Dodger Stadium.
- 3:53The three they won came in the final four-game series with the Dodgers.
- 3:57When they took three out of four.
- 4:01And got right back into the pennant race.
- 4:05Giants now with a record of 102 wins, 61 losses.
- 4:09The Dodgers 101 wins and 60 T-losses.
- 4:12Giants out in front of the Dodgers for the first time since, I can't remember when.
- 4:20Back in early July sometime when the Dodgers took over first place.
- 4:25And the Giants yesterday by virtue of their win moved out in front for the first time.
- 4:31So the Giants hoping to wrap it up in this second game.
- 4:34The Dodgers wanting to hang on with grim determination and run it to the final day.
- 4:39As Manager Wal Delson said, the only way we can win it now is to go on a two-game winning streak.
- 4:45The Giants trying to prevent that today.
- 4:48Battling one of their old members, John Drysdale and Jack Sanford having his greatest season.
- 4:53And the helmet. Manager Alvin Dark is called on to wrap it up.
- 4:58Jack, who won his 20th down here the last time that the Dodgers and Giants met.
- 5:04Had great stuff in that ballgame.
- 5:08And if he can bring that back with him today, then the Giants have got a real shot at it.
- 5:12Jack warming up to our right in front of the Giants.
- 5:15I've got Drysdale to our left.
- 5:17Ballgame delayed slightly.
- 5:19The Giants are going to be the champions now taking their position.
- 5:25And right now we're going to have a playing of the national anthem.
- 5:54The national anthem.
- 6:24Drysdale and Sanford still completing their warm-ups, not yet ready to go.
- 6:47The Dodgers have not taken the field yet.
- 6:51Al Barley behind the plate, Jack O'Connor, heads for third base, looks in the Dodger dugout.
- 6:57Augie Donatelli is second.
- 6:59Dusty Boggess is first.
- 7:03And the fans here.
- 7:05Sort of hard to tell the crowd.
- 7:07It would say somewhere probably around 25,000, 25 to 30 possibly, are on hand right now.
- 7:15More people coming in.
- 7:20And a very warm afternoon in Los Angeles as the Dodgers take the field.
- 7:34Defensively in the outfield, Duke Snyder on left, Willie Davidson center, Frank Howard on right.
- 7:40In the infield, Tommy Davis is third.
- 7:42Maury Will at short, Tim Gilliam at second, Wally Moan at first,
- 7:47and Joe Swell during the catching in Don Drysdale, the pitching.
- 8:02Don Drysdale, working with two days' rest, is fourth start in nine days.
- 8:07And the way he's firing the ball in there doesn't look like it's poppin'.
- 8:10It's too much.
- 8:14The Giants in the top of the second, McCovey, Defeder, and Fully-Pelou against the off-ranks of Don Drysdale.
- 8:21Jack Sanford struck out the side in the top half of the first inning.
- 8:33Willie McCovey standing off to the side.
- 8:41And McCovey, a fellow who has been known to cause Don Drysdale a little trouble, is up there at the plate.
- 8:49In the first inning, somebody struck out to having put Foulvatt in maze,
- 8:53flied to the wall in center field.
- 8:54The first pitch is inside to McCovey for ball one.
- 8:57That's hand batting stretch up here with the outfield deep and around to the right.
- 9:03Drysdale winds again.
- 9:04The next pitch outside, ball two, a let-up. Drysdale giving McCovey a little bit of an off-beat pitch.
- 9:13Do nothing counter, Willie.
- 9:15And Drysdale ready, the 2-0 pitch.
- 9:18Swung on, bounded to first base, and Fully-Moon seals it.
- 9:21McCovey is out of there.
- 9:23So that's round number one.
- 9:24Orlando Cepeda will come up.
- 9:26And I know Don Drysdale took a deep side.
- 9:29Right here, that pause for station identification.
- 9:31This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 9:33Hi, everybody. This is Don Sherwood.
- 9:35If you're a little rusty with your Spanish lessons, listen to me on KSFO,
- 9:40KSFO, KSFO, KSFO.
- 9:47Here is Orlando Cepeda waiting.
- 9:49And it's called strike one.
- 9:52Breaking pitch over on the outside.
- 9:57Drysdale delivers the next one.
- 10:01Swung on and that's strike two.
- 10:04Nothing and two to Cepeda.
- 10:07Orlando with a batting mark of 3-0-7.
- 10:09Had a home run in yesterday's game.
- 10:16And the 0-2 pitch.
- 10:18Fouled off into the upper deck to the right.
- 10:20Counts days at 0-2.
- 10:27Nothing and two.
- 10:28One down, base is empty.
- 10:29Strike two, giants and Dodgers, nothing, nothing.
- 10:35Drysdale goes to the rotten bag.
- 10:37The outfield's very deep against Cepeda and almost straightaway.
- 10:42Drysdale winds and the next pitch.
- 10:44The wind drives, base hit into left center field.
- 10:46Going over for it is Snyder.
- 10:48Cepeda takes the turn and holds on as Snyder fires in.
- 10:50The Giants have their first hit.
- 10:52The ball gets away from second base.
- 10:53Cepeda's trying to go to second, but when Wally Moon moved over to field it,
- 10:56Orlando came back the first.
- 10:59That'll bring up Faleep Alou.
- 11:01Sitting beside us, St. Louis Cardinal and out to Harry Carrey.
- 11:04Harry, one observation.
- 11:05I don't think I've ever seen two pitchers throw this hard in the same ball game.
- 11:08They're both very sharp and both have real good stuff.
- 11:11This can be a tough ball game for either team to win, Lon.
- 11:14Don Drysdale now sets a pitch to Alou.
- 11:17Faleep up there.
- 11:18Had a double in the first inning of yesterday's game.
- 11:23Waits for Drysdale's first pitch.
- 11:25Swings, lines the base, hit into right center field.
- 11:27That one may go between them.
- 11:28Davis chasing it.
- 11:29It's going to the wall.
- 11:30Cepeda, around third.
- 11:31He's coming for the plate.
- 11:33And a relay will not be coming in.
- 11:35Alou has him top of double.
- 11:36The Giants lead it one to nothing.
- 11:43Faleep Alou cracks a serving liner into right center field.
- 11:46It rolled all the way to the wall at the 390-foot mark.
- 11:49Cepeda, digging around the bases, came in to score.
- 11:53The Giants lead by one to nothing, and Tom Haller will be the batter.
- 11:56So Faleep Alou drives in his 98th run of the year.
- 12:01Haller up here, swinging left-handed against the offerings of Drysdale,
- 12:05hitting a 262.
- 12:07Eighteen home runs.
- 12:08He's had three home runs here at Dodger Stadium.
- 12:16Now they're going to throw over to first base, I believe.
- 12:19Now they're going to put Haller on.
- 12:20I thought Drysdale was going to question whether Alou stepped on first or not,
- 12:23but they're going to walk Tom Haller.
- 12:25Ball one outside.
- 12:27There's ball two.
- 12:32Drysdale, pitching from the stretch with Alou at second, delivers ball three.
- 12:40And the stretch again.
- 12:42Ball four.
- 12:43So Haller, given the intentional pass, he goes to first.
- 12:45And Jose Fagan will be the batter.
- 12:54So Jose Fagan, hitting a 253, has driven in 57 runs on the year.
- 13:01Drove in two yesterday with a double.
- 13:04The outfield straightaway and medium deep.
- 13:06Duke Snyder fairly deep and left for Willie Davis and Frank Howard in center and right,
- 13:11playing quite a bit more shallow.
- 13:14Alou at second, Haller at first, stretch by Drysdale for the pitch to Fagan.
- 13:18Inside, almost hit him in the knee, ball one.
- 13:27One and nothing count to Jose Fagan.
- 13:31Runners at first and second, one out.
- 13:33A run in, a giant lead, one to nothing here in the top of inning number two.
- 13:37Single by Cepeda, double by Alou after one was out.
- 13:40Drysdale into his stretch for the pitch to Fagan.
- 13:43Popped up to the infield.
- 13:46Will's calling for it as the infield fly is called, and he makes the catch for out number two.
- 13:52The runner's holding on.
- 13:54So a few down, it will bring up Jack Sanford.
- 14:08Jack Sanford comes to the plate with Alou at second, Tom Haller at first, a run in.
- 14:13Sanford looks now to Whitey Lockman to see if anything is then put on with two outs here.
- 14:17He'll be called on probably to swing away.
- 14:21Although what Tommy Davis is playing is deep as he is at third.
- 14:25Jack would have an opportunity to try to drop one down and beat it out.
- 14:29Here's Drysdale's stretch in the pitch, low for a ball one and oh.
- 14:33One ball, no strikes.
- 14:34Downfield medium deep against Sanford, although Frank Howard is playing pretty shallow in right field for Jack.
- 14:43Sanford gets a little of an outside fastball.
- 14:45He could put it over Howard's head.
- 14:48Here's the stretch in the next pitch, low, ball two, two and oh.
- 14:52Two balls and no strikes for Jack Sanford.
- 14:55Two nothing count, two outs.
- 14:57Baleeva-Lewis second, Tom Haller at first, a run in.
- 15:03Drysdale going to the rosin bag, Jack Sanford calmly waiting at the plate.
- 15:10Runners getting their lead and Drysdale stretches.
- 15:14Two up hits, white foul into the stands to the right.
- 15:18Allen rebounds all the way back out onto the playing area.
- 15:22Or just about, just the first base on par field.
- 15:24Just to the count of two and one, Sanford took sort of a half swing on an inside fastball.
- 15:32Two one count to Jack batting in the top of the second for Giants lead, one to nothing.
- 15:40John Roseborough with a sign.
- 15:42Haller getting his lead at second, Haller from first, as Drysdale takes the stretch.
- 15:46Two one pitch, strike two calls and it's two and two.
- 15:52Good fastball for me.
- 15:54Two two count to Sanford.
- 16:00Time is called now, the baseball is back behind home plate.
- 16:06Two and two to Sanford, two outs, Alou at second, Haller at first, a run in.
- 16:13After McCovey grounded out, Cappetta singles the left center.
- 16:16Alou doubles the right center to score Cappetta.
- 16:18Then Haller was intentionally walked, the gun popped out.
- 16:20Two two pitch, foul back by Sanford and it stays a two and two.
- 16:29Two two count to Jack Sanford. Jack had three home runs last year.
- 16:42Got a hit of the first piece of the, what a hit one out here.
- 16:47Willie Nathen in the first inning gave one a 410 foot ride to the wall in center and Willie Davis made the catch.
- 16:53Marty Wilks now has moved well over by second base leaving a big gap in the hole to the left.
- 16:58Stretch for the two two pitch.
- 17:00Strike three calls, Sanford first.
- 17:04So here in the second, one run, two hits, no errors, two runners left on.
- 17:09We'll go to the bottom of the second and the Giants lead it by a score of one to nothing.
- 17:16Just wait until you try your first dual filter tarot and you light up and you know this one's got it.
- 17:20Tarot and flavor you never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 17:23Why be hungry for flavor when all the pleasure you could ask for is waiting for you in your first pack of pteridons.
- 17:28In pteridons you get quality tobaccos at the peak.
- 17:31You get the remarkable dual filter with activated charcoal that brings you the best flavor of these choice tobaccos.
- 17:36Result flavor you never thought you'd get from any filter cigarette.
- 17:39Try pteridons, you'll never be hungry for flavor again.
- 17:47Manager Alvin Dark is about to talk to home plate umpire Al Barlick.
- 17:53They're discussing something not heated lately.
- 17:55Talking, situational, but it's dark now.
- 17:59Starts back to the Giants.
- 18:01Jack Sanford comes out to loosen up real quick.
- 18:03Kowali Moon, Frank Howard, and Johnny Roseboro.
- 18:08The two-tick shot by the Giants.
- 18:10Cepeda reaching out for an outside pitch.
- 18:12A single in the left center and then Alou cracks one into the right center for a double.
- 18:17His score is Cepeda and the Giants have a one to nothing advantage as Sanford comes out to pitch the bottom of the second.
- 18:27There's the timeout match.
- 18:29No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 18:31Nobody left on and at the end of five-pointer play the Giants are leading by a score of one to nothing.
- 18:39That's Felipe Lou who has had two out of two timeout and Jose Perga.
- 18:45In the second inning after McCovey has grounded out, Cepeda, single to the left field.
- 18:51And Felipe Lou hits one that he really used the radar on, a beautiful line drive, but just in between Willie Davis and Frank Howard are over the wall and Cepeda scores.
- 19:02That's the only scoring the Giants have done, although they've had runners on the bases in every inning but the first inning.
- 19:10Miller was hit by a fifth in the third and McCovey walked the two down, but Cepeda flied out.
- 19:15Then in the fourth Alou and Cepeda single, but the Giants all stuck out.
- 19:20Miller then in the fifth, a base on ball for McCovey was the only thing the Giants could do in the attack line.
- 19:26They have had seven lead runners, the Dodgers have had four with the Giants leading by a score of one to nothing.
- 19:34Felipe Lou ready to come up to swing the bat as we move to the top of inning number six with the Giants leading the Dodgers one to nothing.
- 19:48Giants able to rise and bag with the outfielder playing Alou straight away.
- 19:53Many of his 25 home runs were hit through straight away center on the air.
- 20:00Drysdale looks over to Giants right fielder.
- 20:03Into the wind up the pitch to Felipe, third ball on the inside of Carl Steyer.
- 20:14Tom Haller who hit one a long way to left field his last time was in the on back circle.
- 20:19One strike to count as Don Drysdale looks over to Felipe Lou delivers again.
- 20:25There's a swing and a foul, the ball dropped by Johnny Rosemar.
- 20:29Strike two.
- 20:39Felipe almost lost his helmet that time.
- 20:42Drysdale's a rising bag, Alou moving a bit more in towards the plate now on his two strike now.
- 20:50Oka bat high, Drysdale throws and Felipe swings and misses that pitch.
- 20:55Number four for Drysdale the Giants batter Tom Haller who is lost and flied out to left field.
- 21:14One away on the top of the sixth.
- 21:17Here's Drysdale's next pitch now to Haller, a let up to throw to the outside corner for Carl Steyer.
- 21:28One strike to number five Haller.
- 21:32Don Thompson throws again, Haller swings and laces the line drive foul around the right field line.
- 21:37Wally Moon at first base charging across the line but he could not get the glove on the ball.
- 21:43Two strikes to count to Tom Haller as Drysdale gets the sign now from John Rolfe.
- 21:56Straight away and deep defense against Haller.
- 22:00The Dodgers have a lot of respect for Tommy, he's hurt him with that long ball.
- 22:05Here's the two strike pitch, high and inside Haller had to fade out of there in a hurry.
- 22:11That one was out near Chinsville.
- 22:21And the one and two pitch for Drysdale on the way.
- 22:24Line throw Haller takes high on the way, it's ball two and strike two.
- 22:28Nader who caught Haller's long drive in left field is playing him in the same direction this time.
- 22:40And the center fielder and right fielder, Willie Davis and Frank Haller, are playing him just straight away.
- 22:46And a big boy from the University of Illinois waiting.
- 22:49Drysdale pitch to Haller, a check swing and it's ball three to high.
- 22:54And Drysdale, captain of healing, looks at Jocko Conlon at third base hoping he can overrule Al Barlich.
- 23:03Barlich is firm with the fact that it's a ball four, three and two.
- 23:14Three balls, two strikes, we're in the top of the sixth inning, the count to Haller has gone to three and two and the Giants lead one to nothing with the bases empty.
- 23:21There's one out.
- 23:24Drysdale looking down the alley now to get the sign from Roseboro into his windup.
- 23:28The big fella rares back and throws inside to Haller and Haller trucks the first base with a base on balls, the fourth off John Drysdale.
- 23:37And Jose Pagan who has half the short and single for the shortstop will be up here for the Giants.
- 23:43Pagan at two fifty three with fifty seven runs right at him.
- 23:49And one of his seven home runs was here at Dodger Stadium.
- 23:54It is way out there between the three ninety and the four ten markers in deep left center.
- 24:00Although Jose is the first to admit that the home run ball is not the way he makes his living.
- 24:05He makes it with that fine glove arm that he has in shortstop.
- 24:08John Haller at first with one out.
- 24:14Here's Drysdale set.
- 24:18Pagan fouls it off on the hit and run play as Haller was going.
- 24:23Hey I know that you broadcast a lot of football all around Illinois and Missouri.
- 24:28Did you ever see Tommy play football at Illinois?
- 24:30No I didn't. I heard a lot about him. I was doing the Missouri University games when he was at the University of Illinois.
- 24:35He's quite a kid. He's seen a chance to be one of the outstanding catchers I guess.
- 24:39He looks like he's been around a long time. He's come a long way this year.
- 24:45The counter strike one to Jose Pagan with Polly Haller at first base and Don Drysdale ready.
- 24:49The next deliver to Jose. Bounded down the third base line.
- 24:52Base hit. Heading toward the left field corner.
- 24:54Snyder is over there to pick it up. Haller comes around the third.
- 24:57Holding his second with a double as Pagan as the throw comes in on the Giants half runners at second and third.
- 25:02Jose Pagan pounding one that walked that shock line down the left field line and that will bring up Jack Samford.
- 25:09You know what one of the best-kept secrets allowed in the league, I know your Samson Fistful fans have been well informed,
- 25:16is that you spring from the catcher department.
- 25:18Between Haller and Bailey I guess you must have 35-36 home runs and 100 RBIs between them.
- 25:24Well you hit the home runs right on the nose 35 Harry. Then Bailey has 44 runs right at him.
- 25:29Haller has 56, that's 100, that's true. No matter who Malvin fits in there and then on occasions he's put in John Yorke,
- 25:35you know the right-handed batter who can help him.
- 25:37Anytime you get to the catcher department you don't have to ask that much, particularly with that long ball hitting here in pretty good shape.
- 25:43A conference on the mound, Waller-Hall's been out to talk to Don Drysdale and Wally Moon came over to get in the conference, Tommy Davis.
- 25:55And the conference is about ready to break up.
- 25:57You know, since the kosher coffee company paid more money for a premium mountain-grown coffee bean,
- 26:02you'd think their coffee would be more expensive, but it is not.
- 26:06You know in a situation where Alvin Dark can make up his mind two ways, he can have Sanford swing away because he's got the top of the order coming up next with only one out.
- 26:16Or he might elect to have Jack attempt to squeeze butt, but with the infield playing in the way it is that's going to be difficult, but we'll see what happens.
- 26:24Sanford has struck out and forced a runner. Haller down the line at third, Pergon from second, 9th lead 1-0 to pitch to Sanford, a low curveball outside for ball one.
- 26:35Now for the first time today, activity in the Dodger bullpen, we can see Kowinowski throwing down here.
- 26:41We can't see the other fellow, but it's more than likely Ed Robock.
- 26:47They're way in on the right side of the infield, Maury Wills fairly deep and short stuff. Dives there ready, so it's a Sanford.
- 26:54He's slightly good for a foul strike on the inside and it's 1-1.
- 26:58Sanford is not imitated at any time. He's had the bump sign. He looks down to Wadi Lachman again.
- 27:06The Giants have had the scoring opportunities today. They've had four bases on balls and five hits.
- 27:14Dodgers in on the right side of the infield, very shallow. Tommy Davis right at third base with Tom Haller.
- 27:20Darn Drysdale ready, pitch to Sanford, taken outside for ball two and again.
- 27:25Jack is going to play and he does not assume the bunnings fan.
- 27:32Please play in baseball, it can be the most beautiful thing in the world or you can look so darn silly.
- 27:38Drysdale from the stretch, not lining up. Throws to Sanford, he tries to bun it and fouls it off.
- 27:47It was Benning Haller with the gun going to third. Sanford bun it and foul down the first base line and the count is 2-2.
- 27:55One down, killer in the on-back circle.
- 28:02Mighty big run to pick up Rutsch. A tremendously big run, Harry, because that could shackle the Dodgers' feet a bit
- 28:09and could also take a sacrifice play away from them too at this stage of the game with the Giants leading 1-0.
- 28:21Haller just a couple of feet away from third base. John Drysdale looks in again.
- 28:26A big right-hander ready at Sanford. Wait, pitch to Sanford, flung on, foul back. He lost a grip on the bat and it blows out the mound.
- 28:34You can tell that Jack's been in the ball game. He's showing the perspiration through his sweatshirt and through his uniform shirt.
- 28:44He didn't get much of that one, but he wanted to stay alive up there. Just trying to meet the ball and hit it someplace and trust that the ball could go through.
- 28:54The Giants ahead by 1-0 on a single by Cepeda and a double by Lew.
- 29:00In this inning now, after a loose truck out, Haller walked and Perdon doubled in the third.
- 29:05Sanford, up here with a count of 2-2, has fouled off two as he attempted to squeeze once and the next time, flinging.
- 29:13So it's two balls and two strikes as Don Drysdale looks in for the start from Roseville.
- 29:17A big right-hander steps in, gets ready to deliver. Sanford bumps it back to Drysdale who throws it in. All hands are safe.
- 29:24Tommy Haller scores as Drysdale falls down. Sanford deeps it out and Perdon is on his third and the Giants lead 2-0.
- 29:32The two strikes lead. Well, hey, that one bounced right. Boy, that's daring baseball, marvelous baseball.
- 29:40Everything is one word, but certainly picked a good pitch right down to where he could handle it. You notice where Sanford's back rolled?
- 29:47I think that Drysdale was a little bit distracted by the bats and trying to field the ball.
- 29:51And for some reason or other, even though Drysdale fell down, they have scored it as an error.
- 29:57Now Wally Moon takes time to come over and talk to Don with Perdon down at third.
- 30:08Even though it was scored as an error, Sanford was going to run by the end.
- 30:19Sanford also will get a sacrifice on that.
- 30:31Now Tommy Davis comes over to talk to Don Drysdale who is just a little copy of the order.
- 30:36And shots with good butter and it could happen again although since he swings the bats there, well, they might want him to be swinging.
- 30:42Sanford at first, Perdon at third, the Giants leading 2-0.
- 30:49Drysdale looking in to get his time from Don Roeper, working from the stretch. The runner is ready to go.
- 30:55It looks hung on in line in the short right field.
- 30:59As the base hit in front of him, Perdon comes in to score. Sanford stops his shot. The Giants lead 3-0.
- 31:09Perdon was holding it good, waiting to see where that ball was going to go.
- 31:15And as soon as he saw it hit the ground, he took off and screwed to make it 3-0.
- 31:20And to bring up the Giants third baseman, Jimmy Davenport.
- 31:30And the happy looking Giants dugout at the moment, right, as you notice.
- 31:33You bet it is. They start to smell that money now.
- 31:38What a difference a few days can make, huh? And a few days to hit that.
- 31:42Davenport to Giants right now with Sanford at second and Hiller at first with the Giants leading 3-0.
- 31:47Giants are ready. Throw to Davenport. Three-line drive to the best field for the base hit.
- 31:51Gens are coming around third. Here comes the slider throw into the plate. Jack Sanford slides his score.
- 31:57The Giants lead 4-0.
- 32:03Harry, one thing about it. Throughout the season, Jack has had difficulty after he has done a lot of running, as he has in this inning.
- 32:11He has faded a bit in the deck a couple of times. So you can see that Mays, the next Giants batter, is not coming up to the plate.
- 32:20He goes back to change the bet. Those extra few gulps of air are different for a while.
- 32:25Yeah, he's had a tough round there on those bases at that. And he can use a little bit of a breather here.
- 32:31Maybe the Dodgers might participate in that because they may have to change pitches.
- 32:36This is Wal Alston at the mouth of the dugout. The reason he was up there is Tommy Davis had called for the ball at third.
- 32:44Here comes Leo, and there probably is going to be a picking game.
- 32:49Billy O'Dell is cutting down to the Giants both ends. So the Giants will have some less-handed releases next day.
- 32:55The reason Alston has come out there, Harry, was Tommy Davis had called for the ball at third.
- 33:00Going to claim a stamp in the midst of that, but Jack will come and wave him away.
- 33:03He's lost the game at the Polar Gounds this year on a play like that, by the way.
- 33:07We are talking about chances for us being a little bit windier here.
- 33:11I think that you guys could gamble your chances on his losing a little bit of stuff
- 33:16with those three additional runs in this inning, wouldn't you?
- 33:18Well, I'm sure they would because the Giants have well-rested pitches,
- 33:21and for that reason you can see activity in the Giants' bullpen right now.
- 33:25And Billy O'Dell is starting to throw. We'll pause here for station identification.
- 33:30This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 33:32Well, here in the 90-year-old Labrador to Latin America, KSFL reporters always have the real story.
- 33:37But the best news is...
- 33:38KSFL, in San Francisco.
- 33:47This is Russ Hodges along with Harry Carried on Dodger Stadium.
- 33:51There will be a pitching change.
- 33:52Dry Jale pitching with only two days of rest will be removed from the game.
- 33:57Ed Robux, who has to have the nomination for the rubber arm of the year, walks in.
- 34:04Ed, who kicked very well yesterday in blanking the Giants for four innings,
- 34:08has won 10 while losing one, and he has 8-3.
- 34:11Let's reconstruct this big inning.
- 34:14Harry, what would you say was the big play of this big inning here?
- 34:17Well, I think there's no doubt about it, Russ, as you very well know,
- 34:19and that's Stanford's three-strike, three-play on a 2-2 pitch.
- 34:23Not only the fact that he bended the ball fair,
- 34:25but quite frequently seen that play flag in that situation.
- 34:28Yeah, but usually fouled until the strikeout.
- 34:30But the fact that he was able to bounce the ball in a good position.
- 34:34And the Giants had the good fortune of having his bat out there somewhere, too.
- 34:38That's right.
- 34:39That hill, South.
- 34:40So Lee Palouse struck out.
- 34:41Here's a big hand for Dry Jale, and this fellow certainly deserves it.
- 34:46Not to lose, but he's not the happiest individual in the world,
- 34:49as he heads over to the clubhouse along with Coach Leo De Rocha.
- 34:54De Rocha tapped him on the back as he took the pairs into the back out,
- 34:57and Walter Austin blocked him out, though.
- 35:00A little struck out, but then the Giants started to roll,
- 35:04and on Drake, as Haller got a base on balls,
- 35:07O'Grove Pagan bounced one to third base,
- 35:10had it come down into the glove of Tommy Davis,
- 35:11he could have been a double player.
- 35:13But it was just over his head to roll down the left of the line,
- 35:15Felix Bedrick-Snyder, Haller went to third, and Pagan to second.
- 35:20Then Jack Sanford tried to bunt once with a 2-1 count and fouled it off,
- 35:23swung the next time to keep the count at 2-2,
- 35:26then the next time run it one back toward the mound.
- 35:29Dry Jale fell down, had no play, as Haller scored,
- 35:32and Sanford both were first with Pagan going to third.
- 35:36Hiller dropped the single in front of Frank Howard in right field
- 35:40with Pagan scoring and Sanford going to second.
- 35:42Then Davenport had a shot single over third base in the left field,
- 35:45Sanford scored from second with Hiller holding on at second,
- 35:50and now Ed Robock is in to pitch to Willie Mays.
- 35:53He has flied to center twice and fouled out.
- 35:56The Giants is runners at first and second, moving forward or nothing.
- 35:59Drew Miller and Billy O'Dell go for the Giants,
- 36:03as Alvin has a block of fellow he can use today if he wants to
- 36:06without losing merit, Haller will be his starter tomorrow at media.
- 36:10So Robock is ready to pitch to Willie Mays.
- 36:12Two runners set to go, to pitch to Will, it's a pitch out,
- 36:14he'll throw to first base, Davenport barely back in.
- 36:18Wally Moon is set up to play between the pitcher and catcher,
- 36:23and Wally Moon, ducked his eye just now, calls for timeout,
- 36:28and Davenport says he's ready to play.
- 36:31One ball, no strikes to Mays.
- 36:35He's not a good man to pitch out against because you get yourself behind on the count.
- 36:39But think about it, that Robock's throw,
- 36:41Mays swings and takes the pitchers inside for ball two, two-oh.
- 36:47Getting me through, I said he swings, he didn't come close to striking out.
- 36:55Miller is the second, Davenport is in first, the Giants lead 49,
- 36:58Robock delivers inside to Mays on the count of three balls and no strikes.
- 37:04Somebody just kicked over a chair.
- 37:08He's a premature scullab from that side, he just slipped a little bit I guess.
- 37:12The count three and all to Mays, and he looks to see if he should be playing.
- 37:15Robock delivers to Willie Mays, a curve ball across track, and it's three and one.
- 37:20Mays usually tries to hit Robock to right field,
- 37:24but in this situation he might try to get the bundle.
- 37:30Davenport at first, Chuck is at second.
- 37:35The count to Willie Mays, three and one, and he adds the timeout.
- 37:38Now Mays has played the center field twice and found out he was left a big gun
- 37:41with three hits and a pair of homers.
- 37:49Now Robock wipes the first duration off his forehead.
- 37:57Williams has moved over very close to second base.
- 38:00Howard in right center giving Mays all of the right field line.
- 38:03They had Robock ready, three-one pitch to Willie Mays,
- 38:06one on found at piece to third base, Tommy Davis juggles the close to second in time for the fourth foul.
- 38:12Mays at first with Miller coming down to third and Willie McCovey to swing the bat.
- 38:19We don't know what they're thinking over there.
- 38:21The emotional impact in baseball.
- 38:23A week or so ago, several days ago, we saw the Giants, they looked so down and out.
- 38:28Now you wouldn't know it's the same ball club.
- 38:30This looks like the Giants ball club, but well a little earlier in the season.
- 38:34Yeah, they seem to be on their toes, taking advantage of every break they're going to get today.
- 38:38Willie McCovey will beat about it.
- 38:40Mays has found a distance and walks by it, and Roseburg and Robock will have a little conference.
- 39:08That now as Mays and Miller have their lead, Robock shows the first, Willie at second.
- 39:18Now the pitch to McCovey, low and outside with a spinger ball for ball one.
- 39:23The Dodgers now set the whole field with that for McCovey that they've walked in twice over.
- 39:28Give him anything approaching a good pitch since he's rounded out in the second inning.
- 39:32The Giants lead four to nothing.
- 39:34Mays at first, Miller at third.
- 39:36The pitch to Willie McCovey, a swing and a miss on a spinger, and that's one and one.
- 39:48This is giving Stanford some good rest over there.
- 39:53Danny Robock comes to the set position again.
- 39:57Goes to first base, Willie Mays gets back in.
- 40:00Mays on and Miller at third, the Dodgers could be just like a double field attempt.
- 40:07Robock pitches to McCovey, low and inside for ball two.
- 40:10They're two down, the Giants are two and three, three times the lead, four to nothing.
- 40:20Robock has gone to the well many a time this year.
- 40:24There that Dodgers put some staff over.
- 40:28Now set, throws two and one, McCovey takes strike two on the outside corner for Mays.
- 40:32They run the swing for two balls and two strikes.
- 40:48Number 44, Willie McCovey waiting, Robock comes set.
- 40:51Throws two-two, low and outside, ball three, so Mays will be running on the pitch.
- 40:55With a line of stifada, waiting in the on-back circle to the right of the plate.
- 41:01Ernie Borman leading the tears from the Giants right out.
- 41:11Three ball, two strikes to the Giants left-hander, Willie McCovey.
- 41:16And Robock is ready. Mays will go, there he goes, McCovey swings, line run into right field, they take.
- 41:22And the first thrower, Mays, kicks around the third.
- 41:26And now the ball is good but Mays broke around third but rolls on.
- 41:30Five to nothing, France and fifth-fielder leading.
- 41:32McCovey hitting a bullet, Mays has tipped it over for him but the ball was just hit three times.
- 41:39The ninth batter will be up to the Giants and the person of Orlando's stifada with a single fly to center and grounded out the first play.
- 41:49It's a good thing to get the line drive like that, Harry.
- 41:52Gilliam gave it quite a try, diving for the ball but couldn't reach it.
- 41:56The Giants are sitting in pretty good position, I'd say, right?
- 41:59Things are looking pretty healthy.
- 42:01Mays at third, McCovey at first, Robock pitches his stifada, there's a swing and a bounder up the middle.
- 42:06And Gilliam grabs it and pegs back and base.
- 42:09And McCovey at fourth coming down and a try to third-dive.
- 42:12So the Giants and the Fritzsening have come up with four runs.
- 42:16One through the four hits, there was one Dodger error and two left on.
- 42:21And at the end of five and a half innings, the fans of the Fritzsening Giants, by leading the Dodgers in the second of the playoff series by a score of five to nothing.
- 42:32Now with Jack Sanford looking like a feller, it's a, could really use himself a new uniform.
- 42:39He's got mud on it and sliding, he was perspiring so the dirt turned into mud.
- 42:44And he's ready to pick the bottom of the sixth inning against Jim Gilliam, Duke Snyder, and Tommy Davis.
- 42:49With Bob Bolan now throwing in the Giants both ends, Sanford throws to Gilliam High for ball one.
- 42:57Bolan and Miller are pitching now and in the bullpen and Billy O'Dell had done some throwing.
- 43:05As these Dodgers, after 35 cooler innings, have got to be dangerous.
- 43:11Sanford throws to Gilliam, a fastball that is low for ball two on account of two balls and no strikes.
- 43:20Don Drysdale, after parted, Ed Robach is doing the pitching.
- 43:23All of the Giants scoring off Drysdale.
- 43:26Here's the pitch outside for ball three and no strikes.
- 43:31Alvin Dark comes out of medium.
- 43:36He's had a hard return on this exactly, right, because he doesn't look like the same pitcher as his first three pitchers in this inning.
- 43:42And he didn't work hard on those bases, it's been a lot out of him.
- 43:46Well the way he was fairing down all the way certainly has had to take something out of Jack Hall, though.
- 43:53And manager Alvin Dark is out there to inquire after his condition.
- 43:59So Alvin, after a brief content, walks back to the Dodgers.
- 44:10Hey, Russ, is Chemp Feeney stepping like this every day?
- 44:13Every day, I mean, some opening day on.
- 44:16Oh, he's making a nervous wreck out of me.
- 44:21It's a big one, Harry.
- 44:24And now leading on the bat in the battered box, waiting for the 3-0 pitch from Jack Sanford.
- 44:34And Sanford's into the white.
- 44:36The pitch to Gilliam is in there for a called strike at 3-1.
- 44:42Bottom of the sixth inning, the Giants leading 5-0.
- 44:46Here's Sanford's 3-1 pitch to Gilliam, in there for a strike two on the count of 3-2.
- 44:53Alvin might have told him to quit trying to work the corners, just get the ball over and make them get their way on.
- 45:00The 3-2 pitch to Gilliam is high for a ball four.
- 45:04He gets the third base on balls.
- 45:08And that will be all for Jack Sanford, I believe, as Alvin is walking out slowly.
- 45:14And now also there will be a defensive change, I believe, as we see Matthew Lue getting up,
- 45:22which more than likely means the left-hander coming in.
- 45:25Alvin plays that percentage, Harry.
- 45:27He likes to have a very fast outfielder end when a left-hander is pitching,
- 45:32due to the fact that they're more likely to hit that ball to the left field.
- 45:38But he has not indicated the left-hander yet.
- 45:41It's going to be Stu Miller.
- 45:45Well, you've got the lead here, Russ.
- 45:47This ends it.
- 45:48If you win it, you can't think about tomorrow.
- 45:50If you win it here today, you'll probably never have a better chance.
- 45:53Alvin Dark is pulling out all the stops.
- 45:55He will put Matthew Lue in left field and bring in Stu Miller,
- 46:00who has pitched back to his last season form in his last outings.
- 46:05Despite his record of five and eight, Stu has been in on 13 saves.
- 46:10Miller will pitch.
- 46:21Miller will bat in the number four position,
- 46:23and Matthew Lue will get him the number nine.
- 46:31Jack Sanford with five pointed innings.
- 46:39He's going to make those notes that they're keeping store.
- 46:44Matty will bat in the number nine position,
- 46:46which means he might pass here in the top of the seventh.
- 46:52He's lifted to the fourth batter.
- 46:54He just can't fault the work of Jack Sanford.
- 46:56He did a tremendous job.
- 46:57He held them down for five innings.
- 47:00He goes into the dugout.
- 47:01He gets congratulations from everybody there.
- 47:04He'll tuck it out of the clubhouse, either on radio or TV.
- 47:09That's an important five inning pitch, right,
- 47:12because he's held the opposition score loop until you had a chance to build up a lead.
- 47:16In other words, he pitched the most important five innings of his ballgame
- 47:19from the way the game is developed.
- 47:20Protectively against Drysdale.
- 47:22You don't want to have to come from behind against him,
- 47:24because he gets tougher as the day goes by.
- 47:27Sanford pitched well enough to get him out of the ballgame.
- 47:30And then Alvin has Bob Bowen, Don Larson, and Billy O'Dell.
- 47:35That he can use today if he has to without disturbing his starter for tomorrow.
- 47:40One marital if they have to have him tomorrow.
- 47:44So Duke Snyder will be up to bat against Stu Miller,
- 47:47who will take the number four spot in the batting order,
- 47:50vacated by Willie McKelvey, who has not been relieved.
- 47:55All right, we're set to go.
- 47:56Things start to get better for the Senate of 1962. Duke Snyder to bat it.
- 48:01On his first base, Jim Gilliam.
- 48:05He'll make very good contributions to the Dodgers' cards with those bases on ball.
- 48:10He's just got his 90 seconds.
- 48:12Snyder waiting.
- 48:13Miller gets set.
- 48:14He delivers to the Duke.
- 48:15A curve ball is swing on him at strike one.
- 48:22Snyder has walk and fly deep to left field.
- 48:24Tommy Davis will be the next batter-up.
- 48:29And if things wind up today, Tommy has won the batting title by two or three points over Frank Robinson.
- 48:36Miller steps again.
- 48:37The lead at first for Gilliam.
- 48:39The pitch to the Duke, a high curve ball is inside for ball one and strike one.
- 48:43Miller was the winning pitcher Sunday when Mays-Holmerdorf fell in the eighth inning.
- 48:48Miller had come in to pitch the eighth, and he also took the night without allowing base runner.
- 48:53Just this one to the year.
- 48:56Cepeda behind Gilliam at first base.
- 48:58As soon as Miller gets set for the one-on-one, delivered to Snyder.
- 49:01Miller throws. Duke swings.
- 49:03Line to try.
- 49:04Player ball.
- 49:05The game of inches.
- 49:27Duke has the first man to reach third base for the Dodgers in their last 31 innings.
- 49:38That will bring up Tommy Davis as the Dodgers who have gone 35 innings are out of score.
- 49:43We'll recap. We understand we had a bit of transition difficulty.
- 49:47After Gilliam walks, Snyder hits the right field line with a double.
- 49:51Then Gilliam to third. Tommy Davis to batter.
- 49:53Nobody down.
- 49:54Tommy has stuck out and single a left. The time for the infield back.
- 49:58And Dodger Stadium getting ready to come up high.
- 50:01Miller throws. Tommy takes a fastball at foul side.
- 50:13You can see where that ball hit. It was a fair ball, no doubt about it.
- 50:16It took about half an inch off the chop mark on the foul side.
- 50:21Miller throws again. Tommy Davis takes inside for a ball on the count of one-on-one.
- 50:31Now it's Bob Bowlin and Billy O'Dell throwing for the Giants who lead 5-0.
- 50:36With Gilliam at third and Snyder at second.
- 50:41And here's the wind up of Miller for the next 50-odd.
- 50:51There's him low and outside for ball to strike one.
- 50:56Don't go anywhere at all.
- 51:05Now getting set for the two-and-one pitch.
- 51:10Here's new section of the play. The pitch to Tommy Davis.
- 51:13A high drive in the deep center. Maze will make the catch.
- 51:16Gilliam will score. Snyder tags and goes to third.
- 51:34It took the Dodgers 35 and a third innings to score.
- 51:38And that's why you're hearing that big roar from the crowd.
- 51:41Tommy Davis drives in his 151st run of the year.
- 51:45Wally Moon will be the batter and he has a chance to drive in another one with Duke Snyder at third.
- 51:50A long, high, sacrifice wide of center.
- 51:56The Giants lead in field back again.
- 51:59Miller throws to Wally Moon who ran up to bounce the ball but took it inside for ball one.
- 52:04The Giants lead by a 2-1. That roar from the crowd sounded as though he hit a grand slam
- 52:10but they were so happy to see the Dodgers finally break that scoring game.
- 52:19It was started by Larry Jackson, continued by Ernie Brolio, then Kirk Simmons, then Billy Pierce.
- 52:27Finally it's broken off Jack Sanford and Miller.
- 52:29It's to Moon. A curve is blowing inside.
- 52:42Moon, former Cardinal who stands deep in the batter's box, a left-handed batter.
- 52:46Miller throws to Wally.
- 52:47There's a curve. It's fouled on the first base line bound by the first base coach, Greg Malina.
- 52:53Jimmy Davenport playing wide of third as Moon slices the ball quite often.
- 53:08Matty Allou, the new left fielder, straight away at left.
- 53:12Mays and Filippalu in the deep outfield box that Miller winds and throws 2-1.
- 53:18It's to Moon. A slow curve is high.
- 53:363-1 pitch on the way. Wally takes a fastball. He was taking all the way. It's a 12-strike with 3-2.
- 53:523-ball, 2-strike. Duke Snider is in third with one out.
- 53:56Miller winds, throws to Wally Moon.
- 53:58It's pitch a curve ball, rolls foul down the first base line. Moon was out in front of that pitch and was barely able to foul it off.
- 54:04Ernie, the giant bat boy who made the trip down here with the team from San Francisco, field bat one, sends it back over to the Dodger bat boy.
- 54:15And the Dodgers are showing more bullpen activity because eventually they will probably have to pitch it for Ed Robach.
- 54:28Fension mounting again as Wally Moon waits on the 3-2 pitch. Here's Miller's lineup and delivery. On the way, he holds up the ball for him.
- 54:38Here is Big Fine Power, the Oman leader of the Dodgers, with runners at first and third. Allardy has walked and lined his way to field.
- 54:58This fella can scare you by just showing up at the ball park.
- 55:06So there are runners at first and third with one down. Miller looks over at first.
- 55:11He sets the throw to Howard. A curve ball has him playing. Right one.
- 55:25Hull used to handle Howard easily, but Howard is then getting more bases off of him this year. Miller pitches. Howard takes high on him side. Ball one.
- 55:37Frank has struck out 106 times. And he has walked 38. He has 117 runs batted in with 31 homers, 6 triples and 25 doubles.
- 55:51Now the runners at first and third. The Giants lead 5-1. Miller throws to Frank Howard. A curve ball has him playing. Strike two.
- 56:07One ball, two strikes. To the biggest ball player around in the big wave.
- 56:14And two, Miller with his sign from Tommy Howell. Moon leads at first. Two gets set, throws to Frank Howard outside. For a ball on the count, he has two balls and two strikes.
- 56:26You remember that first series here this year when Howard drove in 12 runs against the Giants? Boy, they couldn't do anything, man.
- 56:36Now Miller, the calmest person in the place, rubs up the baseball. And he sets the throw two and two to Frank Howard. His pitch to the big crank. A curve ball.
- 56:50Miller's left hand on Duha. Coming in the fourth is Smiter. Runners at first and second with Johnny Roseberg.
- 57:00Frank Howard putting the Dodgers right back in the ball game as they throw in his 118th run. And manager Alvin Dirk is going to make another pitching change.
- 57:11He will bring in the left-hander, Billy O'Dell, to make the left-hander batting, Johnny Roseberg.
- 57:23The outside line. Morrissey threw up with his pitchers as high as he's been here today. Everything he's seen to throw seems to be up and he likes to keep that ball down.
- 57:32That was the pitch he thought would be a strikeout pitch, but it was up at Howard's eyes. In fact, up where that ball was, we wouldn't have been surprised to see it riding out of here, Harry.
- 57:41And it's got to breathe a little life into him. This is it, this is what I was hoping for. They were definitely going to do some scoring. Billy O'Dell will come in.
- 57:55Doris Faye is leading cheer for the Dodgers down there in her box deep with the adjacent of the Dodger, Dugha. I think Dug Camilli coming down the line, I guess he'll be used as a pinch hitter somewhere along the line.
- 58:11He was successful yesterday. They might use him as a pinch hitter for Rosa. Or they could use him as a pinch hitter for Willie Davis. Or of course for Ed Robuck if the Dodgers go that far. Reconstructing the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 58:25Jack Sanford ran out of gas, walked Gilliam, and was taken out with Miller coming in to pitch to Snyder. Snyder hit the right field line with a double, sending Gilliam to third. Tommy Davis got a long-sacrificed flight at center field.
- 58:38That's got the Dodgers first run home in 35 and a third inning. Then Moon walks and Frank Howard hit a two and two pitch to left field. A real screamer that sent two Willer out of there and got the Dodgers their second run.
- 58:53Moon went to second and held on. Frank Howard is at first with one out in the bottom of the sixth. A giant lead in by a two, still one appeared to be for a while. A routine victory means that this is a real tough one now. Camilli is out on the on-deck circle and will back for Willie Davis we presume.
- 59:12Although now he starts to walk up to the plate. And it's probably just going to cause some encouragement after Rocha. No, he's going to back for Rocha.
- 59:26This boy from Santa Rosa, California, a fine gentleman and a great catch in fact. He's batting 279 on the season. He's batted in 22 runs with four homers, two triples and five doubles.
- 59:56So Camilli will back for a Rocha with Willie Davis in the on-deck circle. Willard Frank Howard at first base and Wally Moon at second. Camilli's double is in a roll of a pinch hitter yesterday off of Billy Peir. Tom Haller has charged over to the Giants dugout to say something to manager Alvin Dyer.
- 1:00:13This one was a former great first baseman of the Dodgers. A great family heritage dugout inherited from the top golf company. A right-hander hitter with Wally Moon at second base and Frank Howard at first. One out and Old El ready to throw to Camilli.
- 1:00:34The pitch to Doug is taken inside for ball one. Old El who picked Sunday worked seven final and left with his door tied one and one with the Giants. Winning it out two to one. This is his 43rd appearance. He's won 19 while losing 14.
- 1:00:52The bigger is the Giants calling. Ready, throws to Camilli. Inside with a curve for ball two. Bob Fulham and Don Larkin boosting for the Giants.
- 1:01:08But on and one away the Dodgers with their biggest red of the last week. Saving off or doing all they can to save off elimination from the planet right. Old El throws a curve that ties to a hole three.
- 1:01:34Three and all the count. Howard leads it first. Wally Moon at second. Old El has not been close with any of these pitches. Now he throws three and one. The pitch is in there for a foul strike. He threw three and all and he's down three and one.
- 1:01:59Three balls one strike. Now the three one pitch Camilli swings and misses on a fast ball of three and two.
- 1:02:17Three balls two strikes. Camilli saw some service with the Dodgers last year. All right the two runners ready to go as Old El throws to Camilli and the ball fouls off the mask of Tom Howler.
- 1:02:37You think you can't live a long time in one of these situations?
- 1:02:43You can be relaxed because you're just in as a spectator. Not really. I'm pulling hard for you. All right. Three and two to Doug Camilli.
- 1:02:56Howard at first. Wally Moon at second. Billy Old El steps throws a fast ball right to right field. Wally Moon rounds third. They hold him up and the bases are loaded as the throw comes through. Wheel pause for station identification. This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 1:03:13Whether it's in construction or chaos I'll guide you through dear friend. This is Jack Carney on the commute club daily.
- 1:03:31They load it now and there will be a pinch hitter. Andy Carey will back for a witty day. The Dodgers are pulling out all the stops as they have taken out their regular catcher Johnny Rose for us and now have taken out their regular center fielder Willie there.
- 1:03:50Andy Carey has been announced as the pinch hitter as manager Alvin Burke is on the top step of the dugout but has not made a move as yet.
- 1:04:02Moon stops at third. Howard is at second. Doug Camilli is at first. The Giants lead 5-2, one out in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Dodgers left for so long and suddenly come alive.
- 1:04:18Andy Carey a right-handed batter. Average at 234. O'Dell and Carey face each other in the American League. O'Dell throws to Carey. There's a swing and a foul. Strike one.
- 1:04:35There is no pinch hitter out on deck for Ed Robon but the Dodgers still have plenty of them. Dale Spencer, Mick Mullin. The lead by Wally Moon, the pitch by Billy O'Dell. Carey swings and misses strike two and he was really cutting for the heavy lumber that time.
- 1:04:59They talk about dry sail pitching with two days of rest. O'Dell picks seven for an in-sum. The Giants keep on the infield and outfield hoping for the double play ball. Moon, Howard and Camilli ready to go. O'Dell delivers. Carey takes it outside. A hole for a count of one and two.
- 1:05:27This is when the managers start to out-think each other. Here's O'Dell delivering to the plate. The pitch to Carey is hung on and grounded foul and Leo DeRosier had to do the hop, skip and jump at third base.
- 1:05:49A lot of people hanging on every pitch in this game with the Giants radio network and the Dodger radio network. Local TV in both San Francisco and Los Angeles and around the country.
- 1:06:01The one and two delivery by Billy O'Dell. The pitch to Andy Carey is fouled out. Carey has been used for spot duty. He's played in this is his 53rd game. And he has a count of one ball and two strikes in an inning that seems to have started last Thursday.
- 1:06:27The Dodgers have scored twice. They have the bases loaded. And O'Dell checks with his catcher again as the runners are set to go. Billy into the line up. Pitch to Andy Carey. Low for ball two and a count of two and three.
- 1:06:56Two balls, two strikes. One man away. The Dodgers with the bases loaded. On two walks and three hits in the inning with two runs already coming in. Now the pitch to Andy Carey is in sight and almost hit him in the foot. He claims he was hit. He was hit.
- 1:07:15And Tom Haller is arguing with Al Wallach that the ball did not hit him. But it forces him while he moves. And now the Dodgers will have to make a move as Ed Robock is their lifted batter. And Lee Wall is being set up to the plate.
- 1:07:43What can we bring from change, Russ? That's why people turn out to see baseball all the time. They're waiting for the announcement of Lee Wall and then probably a pitching change with the Giants.
- 1:08:04Lee Wall is up to act as a pitch hitter now as the Dodgers have used their sprinters to fight for their pitch hitter. And two of them have delivered with one of them getting a hit and the other one getting hit for the pitch.
- 1:08:17And with one away in the bottom of the sixth inning, we'll see as long as the Dodgers want to make a change. He has Poland and Larson already. But he's going to stay with Billy O'Dell against Lee Wall.
- 1:08:32The Giants lead 5-3. The Dodgers with the tying runners at second and third. The possible lead run at first. And O'Dell Bucks. O'Dell Bucks. Wait just a moment. Wait just a moment.
- 1:08:43John Colton has taken exception to something and called time out. We thought he was calling a buck.
- 1:08:53Oh, they just did. The Dodger bench had yelled times as they wanted to put in a runner. DeRosha was yelling buck, but Colton had called time and that's why O'Dell Bucks.
- 1:09:18Larry Burright is running. O'Dell Bucks and Lee Wall misses outside.
- 1:09:30Walter Olson going to his bench and he's got a great one. Lee Wall batting to the robot. Larry Burright running for Andy Carey. Power to third. A second base for Milly at first.
- 1:09:44Giants leading 5-3. And here's the pitch by Billy O'Dell to Lee Wall. The serve is good for the Carl's strike at one and one.
- 1:09:57We cannot see the Dodger bullpen beyond one corner of it. We can see Paranaski going down there.
- 1:10:08Down to the bottom of the strike. Number seven, Wall's waiting. And here's the pitch by O'Dell. Wall swings on a serve. Like two.
- 1:10:18This is what you would want to see in a playoff. You'd want to see this kind of action. And the Dodgers are giving it to their fans.
- 1:10:27This is a real battle for the Divors by the Dodgers and a real battle for the Giants to take it all.
- 1:10:36Billy O'Dell on the hill now with a count of one ball and two strikes. The right-hander batting pinch hitter Lee Wall who has played first base and outfield and been using all around. And he's also played third. He's batting 262.
- 1:10:49O'Dell winds and throws the wall. The clear ball. He's the left-center field. That's going to put the Dodgers ahead as the ball bounce off the wall.
- 1:10:57Right-rounding third on his way to the plate. Here comes the goal. And nobody's a third and Paranaski cannot tag that well for the space in the Dodgers' lead 65.
- 1:11:27Lee Wall hits the left-center field fence with a double to go to the ball and to send Billy O'Dell to the charge. And when the Dodgers and the Bavenport were both chasing Willie May's throw, Wall came on around to third.
- 1:11:50And the Dodgers have gone ahead 6-5 and they have to hold up the dutch in here while they take the cushions off the field as the fans have really been firing everything they could.
- 1:12:01So that's what you call having a bench at the river for you, Harry, the way the Dodgers have paraded them up there this inning.
- 1:12:07Well, I guess you had to expect it sooner or later. They had gone 31 innings without getting a man to third base, not a long scoring run. They won 35 in a third inning before they finally scored.
- 1:12:21The relief picture of the Giants here in the inning unfortunately hasn't been able to cope with them and now it's an entirely new ballgame. It's a 12-game that sees the Giants behind as Lee Wall hits the left-field fence with a two-way set of Billy O'Dell.
- 1:12:38They're empty, the faces of the three that were on there. Wall's just on third with one down and Don Larson makes the long walk from the Giants' both hands. The Dodgers have scored six times to wipe out a Giants lead at the start of the inning at 5-0.
- 1:12:53And Lee O'Derosier is having a little contest with Lee Wall over there. As Maury Wills will come on the bat and the Dodger fans in their extra room to come, oranges and cushions and anything that they can get their hands on, onto the field.
- 1:13:12So Don Larson will be the Giants' fourth pitch of the inning. Stanford started, then Miller, then O'Dell, and Billy did not get anybody out in his time there. And if the score were to remain this way, 6-5 Los Angeles would be charged with a defeat.
- 1:13:34Bob Follin remains in the Giants' both hands, going. No matter what happens the rest of the way here, they'll be talking about that bases clearing double for the long time here at Dodger Town.
- 1:13:51You know, I can only hear what you said, the rest of the feds, I'm here at 25,321, but it sounds like about 125,000. You know, one thing about it, the Dodger ball club now has some of their defensive stars out of the ball game and this thing is a long way from being over.
- 1:14:07Here is Maury Wills with Lee Walz at third. Maury, one of the more accomplished putters around, and Don Larson sets the pitch to it. Larson making his 47th appearance.
- 1:14:26Wills, 0-3. Larson checking Walz at third. He throws to Wills a strike call on the outside corner.
- 1:14:39Leo yells, Andrew, Maury Wills to ping one. And now Wills decides that he will back up.
- 1:14:58The count is one strike to this left-handed batter. Larson throws, Wills takes this one outside.
- 1:15:16Six to five to Dodger's lead. They have six runs and six hits. The Giants five runs eight hits from the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:15:30And Larson coming set with a pitch to Maury Wills. Big Don Wives delivers. Wills swings, fouls it back to the screen. Count is one on two.
- 1:15:51This left-handed batter Maury Wills waiting in here. He is a nice rattle up for the Dodgers. It all started with a walk to Jim Gilliam as the Giants retired.
- 1:16:05So Wills choked up on the club. He just tried to meet the ball and hit it through all over the infield. Mays, Matty Lou and Philippe Lou playing shallow.
- 1:16:15And here is Larson's pitch to Wills. They have a bounding ball to repay that first chase and throws into the plate. And Lee Wills is face at the plate as Haller would spike and drop the ball.
- 1:16:31Haller got the spike to drop the back of the right hand. And he held on to the ball. Wills was going to be out but he dropped the ball and the Dodgers lead seven to five.
- 1:16:45That is a fielder's choice. Haller is going over to the dugout whether to be taken out of the game but he is taking off the chest protector. And he is a rather angry young man as he leaves.
- 1:17:07Now whether that means he is removed from the game, no he is not removed. They want to bring in John Orsino. They will take Haller out and bring in John Orsino because they will want to use that play late for later since hitting him.
- 1:17:22That is a play that is not a chance at the plate but as it turned out the man would have been out. Haller I think has been charged with the air. A very excusable air because he was hurt on the play. He was spiked on the bare hand.
- 1:17:37He got it right across the back of the hand. The Dodgers have scored seven times to lead now by a score of seven to five. They may have what the fans want to see. Morey Wills on his first base with Jim Gilliam coming up the back. And Orsino will come into catch for the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:18:02And if a seven to five score is baseball history being made here this afternoon at Dodgers Stadium with the Dodgers coming from behind to go ahead seven to five with a seven run, six to nine.
- 1:18:16We will check on the condition of Tom Haller. Secretary of the United States will give us the information as to how much of a laceration he suffered and the loss of Tom could be a tough one. Not only for tomorrow's game but if the Giants get into the series.
- 1:18:37And it will be up to Johnny Orsino to try to fill out Morey Wills if Morey has an idea of stealing and he probably does. Here's the fellow that started it all, Jim Gilliam.
- 1:18:49Again to echo Harry Carey's statement, that was a great play that Cepeda made. He put the ball right on the runner. Al Vali, veteran on pilot he has waited to be sure before he called the play.
- 1:19:07So Johnny Orsino will be making his 18th appearance in Giants uniform after working at Tacoma. As a batting average of 255.
- 1:19:20And with this Dodgers Stadium coming apart at the seams the charge is being sounded. Gilliam is batting. Morey Wills at first base.
- 1:19:28Larson picks up the roc. Number 19 Gilliam hanging in as Morey Wills leads it first. Larson looks over there. Will chances away. There he goes. The ball swung on the miss.
- 1:19:41The second base is way over for the players. Maze up to the ball. Will strikes the third. The throw to third. And Wills is out.
- 1:19:50Willie May throwing a perfect strike to third. Hey baby Harry that's one way maybe you can go in for a foul. I tell you that Willie is something to see.
- 1:19:58He charged that ball like a shot. Stopped dealing it on the run and threw it all in the same motion and had him easily at third base.
- 1:20:03And getting that second big out to be the big play of this inning as Wills is on there with a good hitter up here in Gilliam.
- 1:20:11Gilliam swung at the pitch for strike one. Give Orsino an error on the throw. And Maze an assist for his perfect peg to Jim Davison.
- 1:20:19And Larson sets the pitch to Jim Davison. And now Gilliam backs out. Justin Larson is ready to throw.
- 1:20:33Thanks for checking me on that Harry. No error for Orsino. Here's a fastball for a called strike. Wills gets the steal.
- 1:20:40But since he was out at third there was no offense so no error for Orsino.
- 1:20:45Down is two strikes as Jim Gilliam stands in here. The two down the bases after. The Dodgers leading seven to five as they're battling for their lives.
- 1:20:53If they don't win today there's no tomorrow for them. Now the two strike pitch for Larson to Gilliam is low for ball one and strike two.
- 1:21:02Just Tom Geller's right forearm was cut. Several stitches will have to be taken. They don't know whether they'll be able to play tomorrow or not.
- 1:21:10Well it's certainly a tough break but you have to accept those things in baseball.
- 1:21:17Now the one and two pitch. Gilliam sends a drive to right field. The Lue is back waiting. Havoc.
- 1:21:23And one of the longest innings that I've ever seen has finally come to an end as the Dodgers have totaled seven runs. One, two, three, four hits.
- 1:21:34There was one down ever and nobody left on. So as we move to the top of inning number seven with Paranofsky coming in to score it's seven to five.
- 1:21:50Set to go to the top of inning number eight and the middle of this giant batting order.
- 1:21:59And Ron Paranofsky will work to Jimmy Davenport, Willie Mays and then Don Larson or Pink Fatter.
- 1:22:09Davenport has singled in four trips. Facing Paranofsky for the first time here.
- 1:22:19Ron came on to pitch for his seventh inning and gave up two hits but got out of trouble.
- 1:22:25Jimmy Davenport for batter. Giant signed a rally here. Lead at one time five to nothing. Trail now seven to five.
- 1:22:33Fastball is low to Davenport for ball one. One and oh. One ball and no strikes to the giant third baseman.
- 1:22:43Paranofsky's one oh pitch. Line drive. Base hit into left center field. Davenport cracks his second hit. Tommy Davis over to field. Fires into second.
- 1:22:51The ball bounds away from Maury Will. Davenport has himself a single and that'll bring up Willie Mays.
- 1:22:58Mays hits it from the day and it's flied out twice. It's popped up and it's forced to run.
- 1:23:07Willie Mays the batter.
- 1:23:14Why does Paranofsky not exactly fooling him. That's three hits that's built in on him that hit the ball hard.
- 1:23:21Well we need to back him up here in this inning as Mays waits. Pitch is flied foul into the seats for the right strike while Willie going for fastball.
- 1:23:31Nothing in one to count.
- 1:23:36Nobody down. Davenport leading off with a single to center. Here in the top of inning number eight. Giant trail by two. Seven to five.
- 1:23:48Stretch and the pitch. Outside the ball off the glove of Camilli but keeps it in front of him and Davenport does not try to move up.
- 1:23:58Oh balls is trotting in from me. Giant bullpen. John Larson two up next.
- 1:24:12Mays waiting with a one-and-one count. Davenport at first. Jimmy nailing a solid single to center.
- 1:24:18Nobody down and Paranofsky takes the stretch. Here's the pitch to Mays. Third ball outside. Ball two.
- 1:24:28Down is two balls and one strike to Willie Mays. Davenport on it first. Nobody down. The outfield deep for Willie.
- 1:24:36Paranofsky stretches for the two one-pitch.
- 1:24:40Line drive. They hit into left center field. Going over for the slider. He cuts it off and Davenport has to hold it second.
- 1:24:46A blister to a solid line at the left. So a dive. That runner's at first and second with nobody down.
- 1:24:58Gary? I think there's going to be another pitcher brought in here, Lon.
- 1:25:02Wow, they're really hitting that ball. These last two innings against Paranofsky, the Dodgers have been right unfortunate that you haven't scored.
- 1:25:09Right now you have a situation. Runners at first and second and nobody out. And undoubtedly it's going to be a right-hander brought in.
- 1:25:17Can't tell who it is. I understand Stan Williams has been out there warming up along with Larry Sherry. I can make out Sherry from here.
- 1:25:24They haven't announced yet who the pitcher will be, but there's Jaco Carlin going out towards the left field bullpen.
- 1:25:32We've seen a variety of action out here this afternoon. As Paranofsky now goes one inning plus, retires nobody here in the eighth inning.
- 1:25:40Gives up singles to Davenport and Mays. And manager Alvin Darknell will have to make a decision. He has Ed Bailey coming in from the bullpen.
- 1:25:47And he can have Ed swing for Don Larson and bring in a new pitcher. Or he can go with Larson in this situation. Bailey is coming in.
- 1:25:56Coming in the pitch. I want to turn the wheel. I'm going to go in.
- 1:26:02Jack Smith will come in the pitch for the Dodgers. But Jack Smith, who the Giants saw briefly yesterday, and a fellow that just came up at the end of the season,
- 1:26:11had a great minor league record in releasing. It's pitched two innings yesterday. Gave up one hit to the Giants.
- 1:26:18So possibly a little bit of a surprise here, Harry, in the fact that they're calling on Jack Smith with Sherry and Stan Williams out there.
- 1:26:25A daring move by manager Walt Austin. Here's a boy just a couple of weeks ago who was pitching for Omaha.
- 1:26:30And here in the heat of this playoff for the National League Championship, it's his responsibility to get the slugging Giants out.
- 1:26:39Ed Bailey has selected a bat and Ed, who has delivered some mighty big, pinch hits for the Giants this year, will come up to swing a bat.
- 1:26:49And here's Szymanowski getting a hand as he leaves. Gavin Boyd at second, Mays at first, back-to-back singles with nobody down.
- 1:26:56And Ed Bailey bringing up a batting mark of only 225, but with 17 home runs and 44 RBI.
- 1:27:03You know, every time I have to talk about Bailey, I bring in my favorite pound that he hailed from lunch, Strawberry Plains, Tennessee.
- 1:27:11He was talking about these playoff games being on TV and he said, well, they get the show about tomorrow morning. He said, it might be back there pretty close, but it takes two echoes to get it to the Strawberry.
- 1:27:21There was always one battery I wanted to see united on one ball call, and that was Vinegar Ben Mizel, who was from Vinegar Bend, Alabama, and Ed Bailey, who of course was from Strawberry Plains, Tennessee.
- 1:27:35Someone might think you're putting him on. Nobody comes from Vinegar Bend and Strawberry Plains.
- 1:27:44So Jack Smith, right-hander, comes on to pitch, and Ed Bailey will be up to swing a bat.
- 1:27:50Well, I think it's the first time in my broadcasting career I've seen a man turn gray during one ball game.
- 1:27:55I'm going to tell you, Ed, practice going from shade to shade all this season.
- 1:28:05So Ed Bailey, who hit a home run on the final day of the season to give the Giants their first running, hit that off Dick Perrill.
- 1:28:14Had a sprinkle in yesterday's ball game.
- 1:28:16Up here now to face Jack Smith, the right-hander, with Mays at first and Jimmy Davenport at second. The Giants trail by two, seven to five. They now have 12 hits to the Giants, and the Dodgers have seven.
- 1:28:30Ed Bailey looking for that 13th hit. In this situation, up here to swing a bat. Outfield deep, four-head. Bailey set to move in. Jack Smith makes his eighth appearance of the year.
- 1:28:48Davenport at second, Mays at first, nobody down. A stretch by Smith for the first pitch to Bailey. Five-all-one, one-and-all. Seven to five, the Dodgers lead. The Giants threaten in the eighth.
- 1:29:09And Bailey ready, as Smith looks into the sign from Doug Camilli. Right-hander takes his stretch. Here's the pitch. Paul Backman, the count is one-on-one. And Ed had a good rip at that one, and a good pitch to rip at, too.
- 1:29:24So it's a one-on-one count to Bailey. Davenport at second, Mays at first, nobody out. Top of the eighth, the Giants trail, seven to five.
- 1:29:35Bailey switching that bat up there, waiting for Smith's next delivery. A stretch, the runner's leading. Here's the pitch. Curveball, Paul Backman, it's one-and-four.
- 1:29:46So it's a ball-and-two strike to Bailey, trying to nail one in this situation.
- 1:29:59A one-and-two count to Ed Bailey. Davenport at second, Mays at first. They got back-to-back singles out there, and out you retreated to the dugout as Jack Smith came on.
- 1:30:09Smith pitching to the left-hand batting Bailey. The right-hander takes his stretch for the one-and-two pitch.
- 1:30:14Line drive to center field, in there for a base hit. Coming around to score is Davenport. Mays taking for third. He flies, and he's pulled out at third.
- 1:30:23The most unbelievable call you've ever seen. Mays is called out at third base by Jaco Conlon.
- 1:30:38Conlon called Mays first at third, and then called him out. And Mays was on the bag when he was called out.
- 1:30:47So Willie Mays thrown out at third. Davenport scores. Harry, Ron, I can't understand his indecision for this reason.
- 1:30:54The ball wasn't juggled or anything at all. He had both hands down as if to call him safe, and then as if he had a thought about something else and then waved them out.
- 1:31:03A real tough play against the Giants. That was a tying run with nobody out on third base. Instead there's one run in.
- 1:31:09The Giants have one run behind, but there's one out and a tying run now is over at first base. Boy, I'll tell you, that one hurt.
- 1:31:18And Orlando Capete has the batter. So Mays thrown out at third by Tommy Davis.
- 1:31:25Over at first, Ed Bailey. Three solid singles by the Giants. And Orlando Capete out there.
- 1:31:30And Alvin Dark walking slowly back to the dugout. And Bailey will come out and Carl Boles will go in to run for him.
- 1:31:46Carl Boles goes in as a runner, and Orlando Capete is up there.
- 1:31:50Bailey over to talk to the pitcher, Jack Smith. So a big play there. Mays was thrown out of third on a very close call to say the least.
- 1:32:05We're too far away from the play to second-guess the umpire, but a very, very, very fit.
- 1:32:10The indecision rendered was a strange thought about it. Boles leads from first. The Pettit takes high for a ball, 1-0.
- 1:32:17Seven to six, the Giants trail by a run. Thirteen hits now. Ed Bailey delivers the single to drive in a run.
- 1:32:26A go to first base. Boles was standing right on the bag.
- 1:32:33Here's the next pitch. The Pettit fouls it back, and it's 1-1.
- 1:32:47One-on-one count to the Pettit. One man out, a runner at first. Carl Boles running for Ed Bailey, who's in for the single.
- 1:32:55A looper in the short right. Howard's chasing in and drops the ball. Howard tried to make a one-handed catch and dropped the ball, and that would have been your tying run.
- 1:33:08As Boles goes to second, and Capete is on at first, and it'll go as an error on the right fielder.
- 1:33:19And Filippo Lewis the batter. Right here, let's pause for station identification. This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 1:33:25Al Collins here. I can't tell you how many home runs we hit last year, but I can tell you how many tons of mustard.
- 1:33:41Now Leo DeRosier is coming out to the mound, and there'll be a pitching change as Filippo Lewis scheduled the bat, and I believe it.
- 1:33:50Well, I won't call it. It's either Larry Cherry or Stan Williams.
- 1:33:58Stan Williams. Stan Williams will come on to pitch for the Dodgers. So they will use their fifth pitcher.
- 1:34:05The Giants have runners at first and second with one man out. Three singles and an error, but Mays called out a third base on a very close play.
- 1:34:16And right now, Harry Carey, that looms as the big play of this ballgame.
- 1:34:20It does, but you're still in good position. There's nothing wrong with the Giants right now, but a base hit wouldn't cure.
- 1:34:27You have runners at first and second with only one out, and Filippo Ilu, good to be your hitter.
- 1:34:32It was a tough play to go against at that particular spot, particularly tough because it looked like he had started to call them safe and change his mind.
- 1:34:42Now Stan Williams, the fifth pitcher comes on. Keranowski went one inning plus.
- 1:34:48He has been charged with one run on a total of three, four hits.
- 1:34:58Smith goes one third of an inning, and the gives up I hit to Ed Bailey.
- 1:35:10The pen is safe on the air by the right fielder, Howard.
- 1:35:15And Stan Williams, hard-throwing right-hander, comes in to work for the Dodgers.
- 1:35:19So Williams making his 39th appearance, one 13 and lost 12, with an end-run mark of 4.51.
- 1:35:28Well, I'll tell you one thing that ought to help this Williams right about now.
- 1:35:32At that time of the afternoon and the shadows from the stand have engulfed the entire infield, a pitching in the shadow, as it were, and of course he does throw hard.
- 1:35:42I imagine it might be a little bit difficult to follow that ball along about now around home plate.
- 1:35:47I'm sure you'll never know that from the way these line drives have been booming in this inning.
- 1:35:51Three of them hit right on the nose.
- 1:35:53The Giants have been certainly nailing some solid drives in this inning.
- 1:35:58Ron Fairley is coming into the dugout, and now whether there's a possibility that Ron will be going out in the right fielder or not in place of Frank Howard.
- 1:36:08Howard came in on the pedder's ball and was looking into the sun, which is right over the rim of the stadium.
- 1:36:14There's another factor for the right fielder and the center fielder, that over this high stand now at the front is right in the fielder's eye.
- 1:36:22Ron Fairley isn't at first base, and time is being called as the Lewick steps in.
- 1:36:30So Fairley is talking to Walt Alton now, and what the situation is going to be.
- 1:36:35Fairley now going back to first base, so the Dodgers will remain the same.
- 1:36:40The Philippe Oluw was double-singled, struck out and grounded out of the batter.
- 1:36:44The Giants trail by a run, 7-6.
- 1:36:46Now Carl Boles is second.
- 1:36:47Sepeda is first with one man out.
- 1:36:53Both ball clubs running out of changes for pinch hitters.
- 1:36:59Oluw up here to face right-hander Dan Williams.
- 1:37:06Williams takes the stretch.
- 1:37:08Here's the first pitch to Oluw outside for the fastball ball walk.
- 1:37:13Williams really hummed it.
- 1:37:16One and nothing to count.
- 1:37:21Philippe Oluw waiting.
- 1:37:23Sepeda at first, Boles at second.
- 1:37:26Giants trail by a run, 7-6.
- 1:37:29Stretch by Williams, and the next pitch.
- 1:37:31Plung on a mess at one and one.
- 1:37:45Sepeda at first, Boles at second.
- 1:37:47A one-on-one count on Oluw.
- 1:37:48The Giants trail by a run, 7-6.
- 1:37:53Williams not yet takes the stretch.
- 1:37:56Here's the one-on-one pitch.
- 1:37:58Oluw outside with a fastball ball field.
- 1:38:03Here on one, Don Orsino due to bad nankers.
- 1:38:16Williams getting the sign from Doug Camilli.
- 1:38:22Taking a long look.
- 1:38:23The Giants had five hits over the last two innings and made it to the end in only one run so far.
- 1:38:28Here's the stretch and the next pitch.
- 1:38:30Ball three outside, a three-and-one.
- 1:38:37Three balls and a strike.
- 1:38:44So Philippe Oluw waits.
- 1:38:46Three-and-one count.
- 1:38:47Now Oluw backs away to get a handful of dirt.
- 1:38:50Three-one count on him.
- 1:38:51Boles at second.
- 1:38:52Sepeda at first.
- 1:38:53One man out, a run in.
- 1:38:55The Giants fail by 1-7-6.
- 1:38:57Top of the eighth inning.
- 1:38:59Oluw waiting for Stan Williams' three-one delivery.
- 1:39:01The right-hander takes his stretch.
- 1:39:03The runners leave.
- 1:39:04Here's the pitch.
- 1:39:05Ball four, he lost him and they're loaded up.
- 1:39:09Oluw walks.
- 1:39:12Oluw and the batter will be Don Orsino so the tying run moves to third with one out.
- 1:39:18Don Orsino is single his first time up at the batter.
- 1:39:22Boles at third.
- 1:39:23Sepeda at second.
- 1:39:24Oluw at first.
- 1:39:27And Sepeda calling time, wants to get rid of his batting moment at second base.
- 1:39:34So the Giants have the bases loaded with one out.
- 1:39:41Trading by a run, 7-6 here in the top of the eighth.
- 1:39:44Giants lead at one time, 5-0.
- 1:39:46The Dodgers scored seven times in the bottom of inning number six.
- 1:39:54Don Orsino waiting.
- 1:39:56Boles at first.
- 1:39:57Sepeda at second.
- 1:39:58Oluw at first.
- 1:40:02Stan Williams checking Don Orsino now for the first pitch.
- 1:40:05The Dodgers play their infield back double play deep.
- 1:40:09Williams relaxes on the mound for a moment.
- 1:40:11Now ready and time is up.
- 1:40:22Outfield around to the left for Orsino and deep.
- 1:40:30Boles bluffs down the line, the pitch to Orsino.
- 1:40:32A high drive, hits the left center field.
- 1:40:34That'll score the run.
- 1:40:35Tommy Davis going back near the wall.
- 1:40:37And right in front of the wall makes the catch.
- 1:40:39Boles breaks into scores.
- 1:40:41Sepeda goes to third.
- 1:40:42And the Palipaloo tags up and goes to second.
- 1:40:44And this one is tied.
- 1:40:45Orsino almost rolled one out of here.
- 1:40:50You can say that again.
- 1:40:52That boy hit that ball about 390 feet.
- 1:40:54And Tommy Davis was right near the fence when he grabbed it.
- 1:40:57It was a high fastball and he had good wood on it.
- 1:41:00So she's all tied up again, Ron.
- 1:41:03Well, what an afternoon as Orsino drives a long fly to the left center field.
- 1:41:08And just about got that one far enough to get it off the wall or into the seat.
- 1:41:14And conference on the mound.
- 1:41:15Jose Pagan is the batter.
- 1:41:17Harvey Keene follows Pagan.
- 1:41:19Two men down.
- 1:41:20Sepeda went to third.
- 1:41:23A low to second.
- 1:41:25The guy on the side here, 7-7.
- 1:41:28Pagan has popped up.
- 1:41:29His single to short has doubled and his single to left.
- 1:41:33So he's 3 for 4.
- 1:41:36Hasn't done a thing until he gets that fourth hit right here.
- 1:41:39That's right.
- 1:41:43So they, two men out.
- 1:41:45Sepeda bluffing down the line at third.
- 1:41:47Alou leading off at second.
- 1:41:49Here's Williams lined up.
- 1:41:50The pitch to Pagan.
- 1:41:51Low for a ball 1-0.
- 1:41:53One ball, no strikes.
- 1:42:001-0 to Pagan.
- 1:42:02Two down.
- 1:42:03Sepeda at third.
- 1:42:04Alou at second.
- 1:42:05One ball game.
- 1:42:06Stop of the eighth inning.
- 1:42:11Williams looks over his shoulder.
- 1:42:12Alou leading.
- 1:42:13Sepeda bluffs down the line.
- 1:42:14Here's the pitch to Pagan.
- 1:42:15Low ball 2-2.
- 1:42:162-0.
- 1:42:19Two balls and no strikes and Jose backs away.
- 1:42:21Texas Whitey Lockhanks.
- 1:42:26Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:42:342-0 to Pagan.
- 1:42:36Alou at second.
- 1:42:37Sepeda at third.
- 1:42:38Two men out.
- 1:42:39Two runs in.
- 1:42:40The Giants and Dodgers tied at 7-7.
- 1:42:41Stop of the eighth.
- 1:42:45Orlando bluffing again.
- 1:42:46Here's the 2-0 pitch.
- 1:42:47A bounder to third.
- 1:42:48Gilliam charges.
- 1:42:49His throw is in time.
- 1:42:50That's all for the Giants.
- 1:42:51So here in the eighth, two runs on three hits.
- 1:42:59One Dodger error and two runners left on.
- 1:43:01We go to the bottom of the eighth and it's tied up at 7-7.
- 1:43:05You go to the bottom of the ninth, all tied up at 7-7.
- 1:43:09And this is a sudden death situation.
- 1:43:11Right here, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:43:22This is the Golden West Rating.
- 1:43:23This is Joe Courtney.
- 1:43:24Weather passing is easing.
- 1:43:25Keep my music on your lunchtime menu on.
- 1:43:28The top of the batting order of the ninth for the Dodgers.
- 1:43:38Short side at 7-7.
- 1:43:39More will Jim Gilliam.
- 1:43:40And then, Dick Snyder.
- 1:43:41And Bob Boland.
- 1:43:42That's a work.
- 1:43:43As a sudden death now.
- 1:43:44The bottom of the ninth.
- 1:43:45Side at 7-7.
- 1:43:46Here's the second.
- 1:43:47And the pitch to Wills.
- 1:44:00Inside almost hitting Boland.
- 1:44:051-0.
- 1:44:06Davenport.
- 1:44:07Up on the edge of the grass.
- 1:44:08The rest of the infield short.
- 1:44:09Outfield shallow.
- 1:44:10Wills batting left-handed against Bob Boland.
- 1:44:11And Bob Wines.
- 1:44:12There's a one-hundred-foot-tall.
- 1:44:13Ball two outside.
- 1:44:18Oh, there's one guy you don't want to walk and get off.
- 1:44:32Give the ball.
- 1:44:37No strikes.
- 1:44:38And the windup for the two-oh pitch.
- 1:44:39Strike call.
- 1:44:40Two-and-one.
- 1:44:43Two balls and a strike.
- 1:44:44Maury Wells leading off the ninth for the Dodgers.
- 1:44:46Ben Gilliam and Snyder.
- 1:44:48All three at about left-handed against Bob Boland.
- 1:44:52Boland Wines for the two-one pitch to Maury Wells.
- 1:44:55Flight foul.
- 1:44:56Strike two.
- 1:44:57Two-and-two.
- 1:44:58Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:45:06Two-two counts and Maury Wells leading off against Bob Boland here in the bottom of the
- 1:45:13ninth.
- 1:45:14And here's Bob Wines up the two-two pitch.
- 1:45:17Foul ball into the sixth.
- 1:45:19And it saves the two-and-two.
- 1:45:21The Giants led one to nothing after two.
- 1:45:24Led five to nothing after six.
- 1:45:26Or after five and a half rather.
- 1:45:28Then the Dodgers scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:45:30Take a seven-to-five lead.
- 1:45:31The Giants got two in the eighth to tie it.
- 1:45:34Ball up to Ben Williams and Bob Boland now.
- 1:45:37They're the pitcher of records.
- 1:45:40Two-two count to Wells.
- 1:45:42High ball three.
- 1:45:48Full count three and two to Maury Wells.
- 1:45:55Boland with the target now from Morisino.
- 1:45:58Three-two pitch.
- 1:46:00Walked him and boy that was a close pitch.
- 1:46:05Well the Dodgers have a runner on there.
- 1:46:22So Alvin Dark has decided to go to the bullpen and he'll call on Dick LeMay to come in.
- 1:46:35So Boland walks Wills to lead off here in the ninth.
- 1:46:38And manager Alvin Dark will call on Dick LeMay to make his ninth appearance of the year.
- 1:46:43He's won nine and lost one.
- 1:46:52So Dick LeMay will be called in.
- 1:46:55I imagine one of the big factors in making this move, Lon, is Maury Wills' base-heeling ability.
- 1:47:02And Bob Boland isn't too good at holding a man close.
- 1:47:06And he wants a left-hander in there who can keep Wills as honest as possible.
- 1:47:14And that'll mean that Jim Gilliam will switch around and bat right-handed.
- 1:47:18Duke Snyder is slated to follow Gilliam.
- 1:47:24Here to work in the ninth inning, second game of the playoffs, Giants and Dodgers tied at seven-seven.
- 1:47:30And Maury Wells at first with nobody else.
- 1:47:35Dick LeMay has two more warm-up crosses.
- 1:47:39LeMay with a good porch ball.
- 1:47:42He has to keep his pitches down low to be effective.
- 1:47:47Question here whether the Dodgers will be having Gilliam sacrifice or giving Maury Wells a pitch to go to steal on.
- 1:47:56So Gilliam moves in against Dick LeMay.
- 1:48:03Dick takes the stretch. Wills leads and LeMay lobs the toss over there. Wills back in.
- 1:48:11Stretch, another go, and once more Wills is back.
- 1:48:16LeMay, you can bet under instructions to keep throwing over there to keep Maury Wills close.
- 1:48:22Wills has that fantastic knack of being able to get the lead.
- 1:48:26And again LeMay goes to first base.
- 1:48:28He's not thrown to the plate yet. He's thrown three times to first.
- 1:48:34Gilliam batting right-handed against LeMay.
- 1:48:36Davenport sounded up at third.
- 1:48:41LeMay takes his stretch. Wills leads off and LeMay throws again to first base.
- 1:48:57Here is the stretch by LeMay.
- 1:48:59And the pitch to the plate, Wills was going back to second and the ball is fouled.
- 1:49:03Forth element state fairer, Orsino has a chance to get Wills to second base as LeMay had Wills going back to the back when he delivered to the plate.
- 1:49:11I'm convinced more than ever that's the primary purpose for making the move when Alvin Dark did.
- 1:49:16He needs a pitcher out there that can hold Wills close.
- 1:49:20Now Orsino's going out to talk to LeMay.
- 1:49:23One strike count on Gilliam. That was just a short bot down the first baseline.
- 1:49:27Orsino tried to grab it before it went foul and throw to second.
- 1:49:32But it trickled foul, so the one strike count on Gilliam. Wills still at first base.
- 1:49:39LeMay looking in now for the sign for the one strike pitch to Gilliam.
- 1:49:45There's the stretch. It goes to first and Wills back in.
- 1:49:49LeMay concentrating on keeping Wills close. Takes his stretch.
- 1:49:53Goes again to first base and not in time.
- 1:49:59The fans, showing LeMay's efforts to keep Wills pinned there at first.
- 1:50:07Dick takes his stretch. Watch it first, comes to the plate and the pitch is low for a ball. One and one.
- 1:50:16Be careful with this Gilliam. He can switch off that button any time.
- 1:50:19He handles that battery well and he's liable to try to hit through that moving infield.
- 1:50:25So it's a one and one count now as Maury Wills moves off at first base.
- 1:50:29Nobody down. Seven-seven ball game. LeMay comes to the plate. Ball two. Two and one.
- 1:50:37Two and one to Gilliam and Gilliam looks now to Leo DeRosier.
- 1:50:55LeMay takes his stretch and goes to first base for the last ball.
- 1:50:58I believe Mike McCormick, the left-hander, throwing in the bullpen.
- 1:51:05There's McCormick. Now another go to first by LeMay, not in time.
- 1:51:13Right-hander looks almost like Bob Garibaldi, but it's Gail or Terry I guess.
- 1:51:19Gail or Terry and Mike McCormick. There's the pitch to Gilliam. He takes ball three outside. Three and one.
- 1:51:26So LeMay in danger of watching Gilliam and putting runners at first and second here.
- 1:51:34Orsino goes out to talk to it.
- 1:51:39Three and one count to Jim Gilliam. Runner at first. Nobody else.
- 1:51:44LeMay having his problem getting the ball over the plate.
- 1:51:50There's the stretch for the three-one. Ball four. Orsino is out.
- 1:51:58So there are runners at first and second. Now if Snyder was going to bat, he goes back to the dugout.
- 1:52:05Orsino motioning to the giant dugout. That was a good pitch.
- 1:52:14And we'll see who comes on now to bat for Duke Snyder.
- 1:52:20Well with runners at first and second, the Dodgers have all sorts of possibilities of course.
- 1:52:25They can go for the sacrifice to move the runners along to second and third.
- 1:52:29Or a fly ball or a squeeze bun or anything to store or a stolen base as Maury Wills has stolen home before.
- 1:52:38Still the Dodgers have not made a move. Snyder has taken off his batting helmet so we'll have a batter for him.
- 1:52:45Walled off and delaying to see what manager Alvin Dark is going to do if anything.
- 1:52:55Giants are getting down on that part of the batting order where the Dodgers can throw some power at them.
- 1:53:02Darrell Spencer will come out.
- 1:53:07So Darrell Spencer will bat here for Duke Snyder.
- 1:53:17Darrell with a batting mark of 236.
- 1:53:23And manager Alvin Dark with a change made is going to his bullpen again.
- 1:53:31And they still have Kim Harkness on the bench, a left hand batter to the Dodgers.
- 1:53:47It looks like Gaylord Perry is going to be called in for the Giants.
- 1:53:53So this will be the seventh Giant pitcher.
- 1:53:59Runners at first and second, nobody out here in the ninth.
- 1:54:12Gaylord Perry comes in, a right hander to pitch and Darrell Spencer goes back to the dugout for the Dodgers.
- 1:54:18This ball game now has broken the record, Harry, for a nine inning contest.
- 1:54:22There was four minutes and four seconds for Giants and the Braves and we've now gone four minutes, I mean four hours and four minutes.
- 1:54:29Let's get it right soon. Now gone four hours and seven minutes on a pitch lead.
- 1:54:33And it's not over yet.
- 1:54:39So as first and second occupied and nobody down, young Gaylord Perry marches to the mound for the Giants.
- 1:54:45Darrell Spencer has gone back in the dugout. Now he comes back out on the on deck circle.
- 1:54:50Dick Lemay leaves after giving up a walk to Jim Gilliam.
- 1:54:55The Boland walks Will.
- 1:54:59Lemay walks Gilliam and Gaylord Perry is out to do the pitching.
- 1:55:04Seven-seven ball game in the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:55:08Two runners on and nobody out.
- 1:55:19Possibility here that the umpires might ask for the lights to be turned on as the shadows have just about completely covered the playing field.
- 1:55:30Orsino comes back behind the plate.
- 1:55:33Nine to seven-seven in the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:55:35Maury Wills is second. Jim Gilliam is first and nobody out.
- 1:55:38And Gaylord Perry comes in to do the firing for the Giants.
- 1:55:42Perry making his 13th trip. He's 1-3 and lost one. Has an earned run mark of 5.27.
- 1:55:52Both these managers, Juan, certainly aren't afraid to risk the outcome of the game on the young shoulders of rookie pitchers.
- 1:56:00It's really right up to Gaylord Perry now just a little too young Jack Smith for the Dodgers a little earlier this volume.
- 1:56:09So Perry warms up and will have to pitch to Daryl Spencer with Tommy Davis in the on deck circle.
- 1:56:15Well certainly in this first year we're happy who's had Chevron dealers and standard stations with us all year long.
- 1:56:25And I don't think they could have asked for a more exciting year to be associated with the Giants broadcast.
- 1:56:31Gone almost as far as you can go.
- 1:56:36The Giants won the first game and this one tied at seven-seven and Daryl Spencer moves in.
- 1:56:40The Giants figure that Spencer will be tying to front.
- 1:56:45Wills is second. Gilliam is first. Nobody out.
- 1:56:49Gaylord Perry to pitch to Daryl Spencer batting for Duke Snyder.
- 1:56:55Davenport's got it up a third. He'd like to anchor it because he gets the force this third base.
- 1:57:05Pagan trying to keep Wills close at second.
- 1:57:08And he's getting up that entire hole. Now Pagan moves over.
- 1:57:11A front back to the mound. Perry starts it all. He had him stand at third base but didn't throw.
- 1:57:16Gaylord Perry had him stand at third base but didn't throw. He threw to first.
- 1:57:26Honest and shame. It was a play where the third base from Davenport came charging towards the play.
- 1:57:32He got apparently confused. Perry, who must have forgotten that that play was set up.
- 1:57:36The shortstop, Pagan, was over to cover third base.
- 1:57:40And when Perry picked the bunt up he had a cinch play at third but seeing Davenport he must have forgotten that Pagan was over there covering.
- 1:57:48He had him dead at third base and didn't throw. He turned and looked. Pagan was there.
- 1:57:53It was a bunt right back to the mound.
- 1:57:56And then finally turned him through to first base to get Spencer.
- 1:57:59P. Davis is up here but I'd rather doubt a count and get the chance to swing a bat.
- 1:58:04Ron Fairley in the on deck circle.
- 1:58:08Now he's got a situation. A right hand batter up there. Ron Fairley, a left hand batter in the on deck circle.
- 1:58:15First base open. Gaylord Perry took a look and then did not throw.
- 1:58:22These are the kind of situations, Ron, to make veterans on a rookies in a hurry.
- 1:58:27And I believe we're going to have a pitching change right now. Mike McCormick is going to be called in.
- 1:58:34There's no doubt that Tommy Davis is going to be intentionally passed, which will allow McCormick to pitch to Ron Fairley.
- 1:58:42The Dodgers might risk a change for Fairley.
- 1:58:46Although they've just about run out of manpower also. They have Norm Sherry still available.
- 1:58:53But if they can get by Fairley, the Giants might have a right hander out there to pitch to Howard.
- 1:59:00Jim Duffalo throwing in the bullpen now for the Giants.
- 1:59:04So McCormick becomes the eighth Giants pitcher.
- 1:59:10Mike McCormick walking on to become the eighth Giants pitcher.
- 1:59:17One out runs that second and third for the Dodgers.
- 1:59:24Wow, we might have tied a record for most pitchers used in a nine inning ball game. I think it's either eight or nine.
- 1:59:30And we've the Giants have used eight.
- 1:59:38Yeah, that was a particularly unfortunate development because the Giants had set up that play with Davenport charging in for the front.
- 1:59:45The idea being that if the ball were putted by the mound, Davenport could still feel whirl and throw the third.
- 1:59:50As Davenport broke for the plate, hey, God broke the third base.
- 1:59:55Unfortunately, young Perry was taken more by surprise, I guess, than even the Dodgers. It's a way the play developed.
- 2:00:04So Gaylord Perry elected to go to first with his throw. He got Spencer all right.
- 2:00:09But the Dodgers move runners up to second and third. Mike McCormick has come on. He'll loosen up.
- 2:00:14Tommy Davis is the batter, but he's just about rest assured that Tommy Davis won't be swinging a bat.
- 2:00:21First base open.
- 2:00:25So two walks in the inning and it's sacrificed the putt runners in second and third.
- 2:00:29Harry Carey is taking a little red book of baseball to check on the record for pitchers used in the ball game.
- 2:00:35The Giants now with their eighth pitcher in there, the Dodgers have used two, three, four, five pitchers.
- 2:00:43Seven-seven ball game in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:00:46Dodgers do not have a hit in this inning, but they have Gilliam at second and Maury Wills at third.
- 2:00:52The situation where the Giants will have to play their outfield shallow when they first batter, they're going to let swing.
- 2:00:59Comes up there, they have to play shallow enough so they can cut off a line drive-based hit, and there's no sense in playing deep.
- 2:01:06Because the runner could fag and score on a deep fly ball anyway.
- 2:01:10So Tommy Davis up here, but Tommy won't get to swing the bat.
- 2:01:15As McConaughey will put him on his first base.
- 2:01:18The fans will boo this, it's going to be a safe.
- 2:01:20The Giants walk in.
- 2:01:21There's ball one outside.
- 2:01:27There's ball two.
- 2:01:36Ball three.
- 2:01:40And they'll soon be loaded up.
- 2:01:45Ball four.
- 2:01:47So Davis goes to first base.
- 2:01:48The base is loaded by Watt and Ron Fairley who's singled his last time up at the batter.
- 2:01:53Giants will have to play the outfield shallow, play the infield in.
- 2:01:59Put one out, and the winning run is third base.
- 2:02:05Left-hander Mike McCormick to face left-hander Ron Fairley.
- 2:02:09Tommy Davis at first, Gilliam at second, Maury Wells at third, and of course the important one is Maury Wells at third base.
- 2:02:14This is the time you'd like to see a one-hopper back to the mound.
- 2:02:18Now time called as McCormick's out of the pit.
- 2:02:21Maury Wells wants to tie a shoelace, and John Orsino takes that opportunity to run out and talk to McCormick.
- 2:02:40Ron Fairley.
- 2:02:45Up here now, the giant infield in, the outfield shallow.
- 2:02:48Maury Wells at third, Jim Gilliam at second.
- 2:02:52McCormick looking in for the sign for the first pitch to Fairley.
- 2:02:56There's the stretch by McCormick.
- 2:02:59And the pit.
- 2:03:00Strike call, the fastball in there, nothing in one.
- 2:03:10Nothing in one count for Ron Fairley.
- 2:03:14McCormick looks, the runner at third, Maury Wells looking in now for the sign.
- 2:03:25McCormick pitching from the stretch position to try to keep Wells close to third.
- 2:03:28Here's the pitch to Fairley.
- 2:03:30Strike two call, the fastball in.
- 2:03:35Nothing in two to Ron Fairley.
- 2:03:45All in two to Fairley.
- 2:03:49One out, base is loaded.
- 2:03:58McCormick setting the sign now for Orsino.
- 2:04:02Mike taking his stretch.
- 2:04:06Look at third, here's the pitch.
- 2:04:08A fly ball to short center, Maze makes the catcher, comes well to the play,
- 2:04:12comes a throw, and it's not in.
- 2:04:23That ball was just a little bit too deep.
- 2:04:26And the Dodgers have won the second game of this playoff.
- 2:04:32The Giants questioning John Bocallum whether the runner left third,
- 2:04:35and he says no, but he left in time.
