Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini scroll, everyone.
- 0:20All right, I have four stories for you guys today.
- 0:23Three of them are recent and one actually happened last week, but
- 0:26it just came across my desk and it is so relevant to my my life.
- 0:30And I was like, I just need to share this.
- 0:32OK, so let's just get straight into it.
- 0:34The first story that I have for you guys is that Liam Paynes
- 0:37ex-girlfriend Maya Henry has accused the former One Direction
- 0:42star of stalking her since they split.
- 0:45So Maya posted an 8 minute TikTok earlier this week where
- 0:48she said that Liam has been obsessively trying to contact
- 0:51her through multiple different phone numbers since they split.
- 0:55Maya and Liam got together in 2019, they got engaged in 2020
- 0:59and they broke up in 2022. So it's been like 2:00-ish years
- 1:03of this apparently. Quote.
- 1:04Ever since we broke up, he messages me blowing up on my
- 1:07phone. It's not just from his number,
- 1:09it's always from different numbers, so I never know where
- 1:12it's coming from, she said. She said he's also been
- 1:14contacting her mother and friends, and she expressed
- 1:18feeling frustrated that his behavior is always kind of
- 1:21hidden from the public. So Maya posted this video after
- 1:24she revealed in a TikTok duet that Zayn Malik was the One
- 1:28Direction bandmate who threw Liam up against a wall in a
- 1:31backstage altercation. So Liam told this story without
- 1:35naming Zayn on Logan Paul's podcast in 2022.
- 1:39In that same interview, he also said he was meant to be the
- 1:43front man of One Direction, and that was quickly debunked when
- 1:47it was revealed that Niall Horan was actually chosen as the first
- 1:51band member and I guess was meant to be the front man
- 1:53initially. I don't think it's a surprise
- 1:55that Zayn was the one who pushed him against the wall.
- 1:57If we know anything about Zayn and what Yolanda Hadid, former
- 2:02star of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Mother 2, Gigi
- 2:05and Bella Hadid and Anwar, we can't forget Anwar has to say
- 2:09about Zane. We know he has displayed,
- 2:13seemingly displayed allegedly, a history of violent behavior.
- 2:16But yeah, it is like, genuinely scary.
- 2:18It's not just annoying, like it's genuinely scary that it's
- 2:21been this long and Maya is allegedly being constantly
- 2:25contacted by different phone numbers from Liam.
- 2:29Like that is creepy and that is scary.
- 2:31OK the next story that I have for you guys is that YouTube
- 2:34Jack Doherty crashed his $300,000 McLaren in a live
- 2:39stream and now somehow Karina Cough and Jeff Whittick are
- 2:43involved. OK so Jack has a massive
- 2:46following on boy Internet for his stunts and his pranks.
- 2:50He has over 14,000,000 YouTube subscribers and three million
- 2:54Instagram followers. In 2023, Jack bought a custom
- 2:57McLaren for $300,000. Jack, by the way, just turned
- 3:0221. Like he was 20 when he crashed
- 3:05it. So on Sunday he was live
- 3:06streaming while driving down the highway in the pouring rain
- 3:09while he was seemingly on his phone.
- 3:12Many people who were watching it say it seemed like he was on his
- 3:14phone. He lost control of the car and
- 3:17crashed into the guardrail. And his car was like smashed.
- 3:20The whole friend, his friend who was in the passenger seat
- 3:23filming him, emerged from the crash with blood all over his
- 3:26face. And Jack basically was like, oh,
- 3:30my God, grabbed the camera and started like filming him instead
- 3:33of being like, are you OK, man? He was like, oh, this is going
- 3:36to make great footage. So the live stream was on Kik,
- 3:39which is a Twitch competitor that has become really popular
- 3:42with basically problematic creators because it has fewer
- 3:45platform guidelines for, like, what you can and cannot post,
- 3:48what you can and cannot promote. But Kick actually deplatformed
- 3:51Jack because of this. So Jack then posted a topless
- 3:56photo of himself standing beside the wrecked McLaren on social
- 3:59media, writing that he crashed it just days before his 21st
- 4:02birthday and is glad that they're both OK.
- 4:05So Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles have said that
- 4:07they've launched an investigation into the wreck.
- 4:10Obviously, this is all just bad enough.
- 4:13This is just such a classic case of someone who is in the
- 4:18spotlight way too young, way too much entitlement, way too many
- 4:22yes men around you. You have all this fame, this
- 4:24money, this validation as a teenage boy.
- 4:27Teenage boys are already entitled and reckless.
- 4:32I can't even imagine what it would be like to have everything
- 4:36that he has. So am I surprised that he
- 4:39thought he was invincible and was like on his phone while it
- 4:42was pouring rain driving the $300,000 car and crash?
- 4:46Probably not really. So all of that was, you know,
- 4:49bad enough, but then he took to TikTok Live yesterday and was
- 4:53essentially asking people to like, give him money in the app
- 4:57via like, you know, tips and gifts and things like that.
- 5:00And then when he was asked to address the accident by someone,
- 5:04he said, I literally hydroplaned.
- 5:06I'm in McLaren in the pouring rain.
- 5:08What do you expect? You guys have never drove a
- 5:11fucking McLaren. OK, Jack.
- 5:16OK, so this actually turned into beef between Karina Kopf and
- 5:20Jeff Whittick because Karina expressed her disgust with Jack,
- 5:24like filming his friend while he was bleeding from his face after
- 5:27the accident. So on Twitter, she quote tweeted
- 5:30a clip of the live stream writing your friend's face is
- 5:33gushing blood but you make sure he stays filming from all
- 5:36angles. Nice.
- 5:38And then Jeff commented, like responded and said, I don't see
- 5:42anything different here than what your idiot friend as in
- 5:45David Dobrik did to me, which actually was supposed to be you.
- 5:48The only difference is your friend tried saying I asked him
- 5:52to do it and then blamed it on me.
- 5:55Jeff is just not holding back. Like he has so much anger for
- 6:00David and like, fully understandable, but like he
- 6:03really just let it, Like he pushed it down, let it fester
- 6:06for like, what was it maybe a year or two to?
- 6:08And then it has just bubbled up and like exploded.
- 6:12And it's just he's just letting it all out these past like this
- 6:16past year or two since the lawsuit.
- 6:18But I think that's fair enough that criticism, like Karina has
- 6:21stayed friends with David and his whole thing was putting all
- 6:25of that kind of stuff online. Like I truly believe if this
- 6:28accident happened to David Dobrik and he was in the car, he
- 6:31would have done the same thing. He would have prioritized
- 6:33filming it for content. So, yeah, I think that is, like,
- 6:37a valid criticism from Jeff. And what Jeff went through was
- 6:40so traumatic. Like, I understand he's just
- 6:42trying to, like, get justice and, like, get through it.
- 6:47OK. The next story that I have is
- 6:49that Billie Eilish has said that she will never discuss her
- 6:52sexuality publicly again. In a new interview for Vogue,
- 6:56Billie Eilish has opened up about what it was like to
- 6:58publicly share her sexuality last year.
- 7:01Quote I wish no one knew anything about my sexuality or
- 7:04anything about my dating life ever ever ever.
- 7:07And I hope that they never will again.
- 7:09And I'm never talking about my sexuality ever again.
- 7:12And I'm never talking about who I'm dating ever again.
- 7:15I guess I also underestimate the things I say will be blown into
- 7:18the biggest news of the whole world.
- 7:20That's so unnatural. We're all babies.
- 7:22We're all little kids growing up and learning ourselves.
- 7:25So what she's referring to here is.
- 7:27Earlier this year, Billy went viral when she told a Rolling
- 7:30Stone journalist about the first time she realized she was
- 7:33attracted to women while writing her song Lunch, and of her
- 7:36sharing that with Rolling Stone. She said she felt frustrated
- 7:39that she was in interview mode and kind of shared that part of
- 7:42her story while she was. Yeah, Like doing this interview.
- 7:45This is just another example of a celebrity who used to be kind
- 7:49of accessible to their fans, but then the 24/7 feedback from
- 7:54social media becomes too much. And now she's literally publicly
- 7:59telling us, like, you are not going to know about my
- 8:01relationships, about, you know, my own sexuality journey, which
- 8:05is, like, fine. Like, that is so personal.
- 8:08But those are things that, you know, made her really relatable
- 8:11and her fans loved about her. It was, like, going on this
- 8:15journey with her. And while they're exploring
- 8:17themselves as well because Billy is only 22.
- 8:19And I think that is part of that kind of relationship that a star
- 8:23has with their fans, like, especially an artist because
- 8:25they are singing typically about, you know, their emotions,
- 8:28their experiences, their life, things like that.
- 8:30So yeah, I think it is unfortunate that we are just
- 8:34going to see more and more stars seeing it with Chapel Round 2.
- 8:38Just have to pull back because the feedback, whether it's
- 8:42positive or negative, it's just too overwhelming.
- 8:45It's too much when they share anything personal.
- 8:48And that is a little teaser for the deep dive that we have
- 8:51coming up on next Friday. OK, the last story that I have
- 8:55for you guys, like I said, this one is a little bit old.
- 8:58It's from last week, but it just came across my desk.
- 9:01So there is some Canadian TikTok high tea drama.
- 9:05And I had to cover this because for those of you who don't know,
- 9:07I'm from Oakville, ON, which is basically right beside Toronto.
- 9:11It's like a suburb of Toronto. And this drama takes place
- 9:14between Burlington and Kitchener, which are also kind
- 9:17of like, well, Burlington especially, but like suburbs of
- 9:19Toronto. Burlington's right beside
- 9:20Oakville. So this is like my life.
- 9:22Like this is where I grew up, this is my domain and I was like
- 9:26dying. This is so niche and like
- 9:28specific to me. And I feel like I never talk
- 9:32about anything Canadian related on this podcast in terms of like
- 9:34what's going on online. So I was like, we need to cover
- 9:37this one. OK, so there is this TikTok
- 9:39account called Queen of Afternoon Tea and she reviews
- 9:42high tea slash like afternoon tea experiences around the GTA
- 9:47and southern Ontario. GTA here stands for Greater
- 9:51Toronto Area, not Grand Theft Auto.
- 9:53So she is known for really brutally honest reviews, and I
- 9:56think she's only given like 1/5 out of five on her account since
- 10:00she started raiding cafes. Okay, so the queen of afternoon
- 10:03tea, she gave a really bad review last week to the Cupcake
- 10:07Cafe, which is in Maple View Mall.
- 10:11And I cannot explain how like specifically niche this is to my
- 10:15life and my experiences. If you guys grew up in the GTA,
- 10:20you know, you know, you know Mapleview Mall, you know.
- 10:23So she calls this the worst afternoon tea review yet.
- 10:26And to be fair, like it's in Mapleview Mall.
- 10:29She said it's like a way too expensive for what you get is
- 10:32$55 a person. She said only one tea that
- 10:36you're offered isn't caffeinated, which she says is
- 10:39like unacceptable. Like lots of people don't want
- 10:41to have caffeine. She called the bread stale.
- 10:44The service she called horrible and basically like the attention
- 10:48to detail just wasn't there. She also said they were supposed
- 10:51to be like chocolate covered strawberries that came out with
- 10:54their afternoon tea and they just like didn't get anything
- 10:57like that. OK, so this went viral because
- 10:58it was like so savage. And then the cafe responded to
- 11:02her. And this is where it gets like a
- 11:03little bit dramatic. The cafe owner said that she was
- 11:07recently made aware that the Queen of Afternoon Tea actually
- 11:10owns her own competing cafe in Kitchener and that none of that
- 11:16was disclosed on her page. So the owner is basically like,
- 11:20this is a competing cafe owner trying to slander my cafe
- 11:24because my cafe is doing well. So she addressed the criticism,
- 11:27saying the bread was purchased fresh.
- 11:29The strawberries were basically, she said something happened.
- 11:32I don't know if they were like mushy or they weren't ripe
- 11:33enough, but she was like, they weren't like good enough to
- 11:35serve. So we offered everyone on that
- 11:38day, like a different type of dessert instead of the
- 11:41strawberries because we didn't want to serve those.
- 11:43She basically just tried to like debunk all of her claims about
- 11:46why it was like a bad experience.
- 11:48And then she also said that the Queen of Afternoon Tea has sent
- 11:51her friends and followers to message the cafe death threats
- 11:55and leave one star reviews when these people have not even gone
- 11:59to the cafe, which I think of course death threats are like so
- 12:03unacceptable. That is literally the craziest
- 12:06thing ever if this cafe is getting death threats to people
- 12:09that work at this cafe or own the cafe because of a bad
- 12:13review, If that is where Internet culture has gone, like
- 12:17we need collective mass therapy. Like that is so insane.
- 12:23If that is true. And I also agree you should not
- 12:25be leaving reviews if you have not attended a cafe, you know,
- 12:29like, especially because like they just didn't have a good
- 12:31experience. Like, I don't know, like, OK,
- 12:34I'm thinking about Scandal, for example, when fans started
- 12:38spamming what is what's it called?
- 12:40Short Schwartz and Sandy's. Yeah, whatever their bar is
- 12:44called, I think that's what's called.
- 12:45And they started spamming it with like one star reviews and
- 12:47leaving bad Yelp reviews and things like that.
- 12:49Like, OK, that's also like not totally fair.
- 12:51But also yes, Tom Sandoval did something bad.
- 12:55It doesn't have anything to do with his bar, but like he did
- 12:57something really bad. This cafe like this person just
- 12:59left a negative review. Like that is like what she does
- 13:02like that is she reviews cafes and experiences and she didn't
- 13:06like this one. That's all it was on that train
- 13:09of thought. However, it's like it's really
- 13:11not that serious, but I understand that for the cafe
- 13:13owner, it feels like especially because this video got over 6.6
- 13:17million views like it's gone so viral.
- 13:19So this is like really not doing well for I'm sure her the her
- 13:23business is like perception. So I understand her feeling like
- 13:26really defensive and stressed and making this video.
- 13:28However, in her response video, she also showed the face of
- 13:33Queen of Afternoon Tea. And Queen of Afternoon Tea has
- 13:35never shown her face on her account before.
- 13:38So it was like kind of doxing. I mean, I think if you can trace
- 13:42her digital footprint, I think you can find her face.
- 13:44But like, regardless, it's not great.
- 13:47So YouTube Marky looked into the whole like competing cafe thing
- 13:51because again, Queen of Afternoon Tea has never said
- 13:54that. Like she's not disclosed that.
- 13:56And he basically said, if you go through the older content of
- 14:00this alleged Kitchener Cafe, you will see the woman who's face
- 14:05was like exposed as queen of afternoon tea in the cupcake
- 14:09cafes response video. Are you following?
- 14:11None of these people have names. Well, I think they probably do,
- 14:14but I don't want to like necessarily say their name.
- 14:16They obviously have names. That is like a crazy thing that
- 14:18I just said. They obviously have names.
- 14:19I, I'm, I mean, it was probably, their names are probably public
- 14:25somewhere online, but I don't necessarily want to say them
- 14:27because I don't know how public they want to be.
- 14:29So he basically looked into this.
- 14:32And, yeah, if you look back through the older content on
- 14:36this alleged Kitchener Cafe, you will see this woman's face who
- 14:40is supposedly a queen of supposedly, I hate when people
- 14:43say that supposedly Queen of Afternoon Teas face, like it's
- 14:48supposedly her. She's talking in that content
- 14:50about how she's trying to sell the business.
- 14:53And then he found that her review count, Queen of Afternoon
- 14:56Tea was launched after that video was posted of her talking
- 14:59about how she's trying to sell the cafe.
- 15:01So he's kind of like, well, maybe she wasn't able to sell
- 15:06the cafe and she still owns it, but it's also possible that she
- 15:08sold it. And then after she sold it and
- 15:10there's no longer a conflict of interest, you know, now she does
- 15:13this review account, which I feel like is maybe more likely,
- 15:17I don't know. But yes, that is the very niche
- 15:19Southern Ontario High Tea Cafe drama for you.
- 15:24Thank you guys so much for listening today.

- 15:39get our subscribers up on YouTube.
