- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Bomani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is Mina Combs Friday. Mina Combs, what's
- 0:25Speaker 1: going on?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Hello. I'm so excited to see you.
- 0:27Speaker 3: It's been so long and I just found out you're
- 0:29Speaker 3: not going to be in San Francisco, so we're not
- 0:31Speaker 3: going to have our annual.
- 0:32Speaker 2: like 2 a.m. hang out and sit in the Super Bowl.
- 0:34Speaker 4: I know, right?
- 0:36Speaker 1: We normally catch up at like what the wave party
- 0:38Speaker 1: is or something like that. But so the trick back
- 0:40Speaker 1: for me with the Super Bowl is the real value
- 0:43Speaker 1: for me is to go and to go on other
- 0:45Speaker 1: people's shows at Radio Row. But when it's on West
- 0:48Speaker 1: Coast time, Radio Row still run on East Coast time.
- 0:52Speaker 1: And so it's one thing to go out there and
- 0:54Speaker 1: prostitute yourself at regular business hours. It's another thing to
- 0:57Speaker 1: get up at 4 o'clock in the morning to walk
- 0:59Speaker 1: the stroll. And I just don't need the money that bad.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, the West Coast time zone is going to screw
- 1:04Speaker 2: up a lot of people.
- 1:05Speaker 3: But the benefit of it is someone who lives in L.A.
- 1:08Speaker 3: right now. I'm done with work at like three most days, right?
- 1:13Speaker 3: Because that's when the show's end. And I think people
- 1:15Speaker 3: are going to discover that. Because typically in Super Bowl
- 1:18Speaker 3: week or when it's on the East Coast or whatever,
- 1:20Speaker 3: everybody finishes about six.
- 1:22Speaker 2: You get a little second. And then you go out
- 1:24Speaker 2: to dinner at eight and party or whatever. Everyone's going
- 1:27Speaker 2: to be done at three.
- 1:28Speaker 3: So you got hours to kill in the afternoon and
- 1:31Speaker 3: people are going to figure that out real quick.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Now that part, I think that you are totally fair about.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I will also acknowledge that when it was Las Vegas,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I didn't care about any of these things that we
- 1:41Speaker 1: are talking about.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I was there for that.
- 1:44Speaker 2: The 4 p.m. casino.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Oh, dude, Vegas.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I was just in Vegas this week. Vegas was the
- 1:49Speaker 1: time I got off. I got into casino at three
- 1:52Speaker 1: o'clock and by 530, I had $ 1, 400 that I didn't
- 1:54Speaker 1: have when I walked in.
- 1:56Speaker 2: What is the best and worst time to be in
- 2:00Speaker 2: a casino?
- 2:01Speaker 4: The best and worst time to be what?
- 2:02Speaker 2: In a casino.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Ooh.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So are we talking about a casino in Las Vegas
- 2:07Speaker 1: or just a casino generally?
- 2:10Speaker 2: It's a really important distinction. Let's do Las Vegas.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Honestly, for me, it all feel like the same time
- 2:17Speaker 1: at the casino in Las Vegas. Like no matter when
- 2:20Speaker 1: it is, the time that makes you feel a little
- 2:21Speaker 1: worse about yourself is when you're sitting at the table
- 2:24Speaker 1: at nine o'clock in the morning.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:27Speaker 1: But I didn't come here to do nothing else. And
- 2:28Speaker 1: there's not that much else to do at nine o'clock
- 2:30Speaker 1: in the morning in Vegas. I had a day once
- 2:32Speaker 1: where they canceled my flight. And I had to go
- 2:36Speaker 1: from taking a 9 a.m. flight to the red eye.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And the problem with free time in Las Vegas is
- 2:41Speaker 1: there's nothing to do but let them in your vein
- 2:45Speaker 1: like that. That's what there is. Now, luckily, I came
- 2:48Speaker 1: out on top on the back end of that. But
- 2:50Speaker 1: that's it. Nine o'clock in the morning. Everybody, everybody says
- 2:53Speaker 1: they're not judging you. But then you look at who's
- 2:55Speaker 1: sitting next to you and you realize that's bullshit.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah we were when the vegas super bowl when i
- 3:01Speaker 3: would have to get up to do first take or
- 3:03Speaker 3: whatever walking through the casino to the set it was
- 3:08Speaker 3: a tough scene it's a tough scene but that's 7
- 3:11Speaker 3: a.m 7 to 8 a.m because you know at like
- 3:14Speaker 3: 6 a.m you still got the night owls wrapping up
- 3:17Speaker 3: i think that it has to be like breakfast time
- 3:19Speaker 3: where you can actually start judging people but look i
- 3:22Speaker 3: mean i again i'm not a gambler so i don't
- 3:24Speaker 3: really know.
- 3:25Speaker 2: A lot about it but um I would do a
- 3:28Speaker 2: Super Bowl back there in a heartbeat.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Oh, and look, if they have a Super Bowl in
- 3:31Speaker 1: Las Vegas every year, I'll show up in Las Vegas
- 3:34Speaker 1: every year for the Super Bowl. But this is, you
- 3:36Speaker 1: got a special Super Bowl here, Seattle Seahawks fan. You
- 3:39Speaker 1: got your guys facing up against the Los Angeles Rams.
- 3:44Speaker 4: I feel like, I feel like, isn't that kind of
- 3:46Speaker 4: your side piece though, the Rams?
- 3:48Speaker 3: I do the Rams preseason games. I get a lot
- 3:50Speaker 3: of flack from both sides.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Throughout.
- 3:55Speaker 3: There's no real, like, No one's really taken my side
- 4:00Speaker 3: in that relationship, especially I'm an MVP voter too. And
- 4:05Speaker 3: I have been public about the fact that I picked
- 4:07Speaker 3: Drake May. I do a podcast every year where I
- 4:09Speaker 3: explain my thinking and I'll get into it there. But yeah,
- 4:12Speaker 3: I've definitely gotten some angry Rams fans coming at me
- 4:15Speaker 3: about that, especially after doing the preseason.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I feel like even in a road game in that
- 4:23Speaker 1: incredibly loud stadium, especially after Charbonnet tore the ACL. I
- 4:28Speaker 1: feel like, for me, this is a no-excuses game for
- 4:30Speaker 1: the Rams, right?
- 4:31Speaker 4: If all the principles on the.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Rams are whom I have been told all the principles are,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you win this game because that team has Sam.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Darnold on it.
- 4:42Speaker 2: But they also have the best defense in the NFL.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I hear you. All I'm saying is this.
- 4:47Speaker 1: They saying they want to hire the defensive coordinator supposed
- 4:50Speaker 1: to be getting people's.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Jobs, right? All of this stuff. You have got.
- 4:55Speaker 1: That guy right there that we know there are things
- 4:57Speaker 1: that you can do that will rattle his brain every
- 5:00Speaker 1: single time. We are aware of these things. You have
- 5:02Speaker 1: a quarterback that we are putting in the Hall of Fame.
- 5:04Speaker 1: If he wins this one, MVP, at least top two.
- 5:07Speaker 1: We've got that. You have, generally speaking, McDonald, of course,
- 5:10Speaker 1: has done a great job with Seattle. But you've got McVay,
- 5:13Speaker 1: who somehow has turned out to be as advertised when
- 5:15Speaker 1: we started off when he was 31 years old, saying
- 5:17Speaker 1: that he was like an all-time great coach. It's all
- 5:20Speaker 1: set up there for you to go beat a team
- 5:23Speaker 1: that has fewer players that have been at this level
- 5:25Speaker 1: than your team has been.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Well, and you also have a Super Bowl opponent who
- 5:29Speaker 2: you should.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Beat, right?
- 5:31Speaker 2: So this is it.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Not to, you know, sorry, Patriots fans, but I am
- 5:36Speaker 3: of the belief that the NFC championship winner will win
- 5:39Speaker 3: the Super Bowl. It reminds me a little bit actually
- 5:41Speaker 3: of the 2014 when the Seahawks played the Niners in
- 5:45Speaker 3: the NFC Championship, the tip game. And then the Super
- 5:47Speaker 3: Bowl itself, as you remember, was pretty anticlimactic against.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Denver, who could be there. That year felt like that
- 5:54Speaker 2: was the Super Bowl.
- 5:55Speaker 3: And I know I'm getting out ahead of myself, but
- 5:58Speaker 3: it does feel to me, Bomani, like the winner of
- 6:00Speaker 3: this game is going to win it all.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And it's kind of, I mean, do you like the repeats?
- 6:04Speaker 3: I like the repeats as an analyst because it gives
- 6:06Speaker 3: you a lot of obviously taped to rewatch and matchups
- 6:10Speaker 3: to think about. Do you think fans like it when
- 6:13Speaker 3: teams that are familiar with each other face each other
- 6:15Speaker 3: multiple times and it culminates in an important game?
- 6:18Speaker 1: I think it depends on who the teams are that
- 6:21Speaker 1: we are talking about, right? So I think of this
- 6:25Speaker 1: in the context of.
- 6:27Speaker 4: College basketball, right?
- 6:29Speaker 1: So if you tell us that Carolina and Duke are
- 6:32Speaker 1: playing a third time, that is always amazing, right? It
- 6:36Speaker 1: almost doesn't matter what the circumstances are. That is going
- 6:38Speaker 1: to be amazing in the end. So the only way
- 6:42Speaker 1: you get this is if you have conference opponents, right?
- 6:44Speaker 1: People who play against each other fairly regularly. So you've
- 6:48Speaker 1: typically got some kind of twinge of rivalry that perks
- 6:51Speaker 1: up and that's what makes it better. Like if it's
- 6:52Speaker 1: Steelers Ravens and you're telling us it's the third time.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Hell yeah, we going for that. The old NFC East
- 6:57Speaker 1: when everything was a giant robbery or anything in the
- 7:01Speaker 1: AFC West where every game, they all hate each other
- 7:04Speaker 1: in a very particular way. This division, which has only
- 7:07Speaker 1: existed now for fewer.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Than 25 years, right?
- 7:13Speaker 1: Seattle and San Francisco had their thing in the previous decade.
- 7:18Speaker 2: There's some real hate there.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Yes, it's really there. This one doesn't feel like it
- 7:22Speaker 1: has it the same way.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you're right. I don't think Seahawks fans
- 7:27Speaker 3: and Rams fans really hate each other the way Seahawks
- 7:32Speaker 3: fans and Niners. And then the Seahawks-Niners thing, you alluded
- 7:34Speaker 3: to this. This goes back to Pete Carroll and Jim
- 7:37Speaker 3: Harbaugh and when Colin Kaepernick was the quarterback and Russell Wilson.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Those fan bases despise you. You remember that Bose commercial
- 7:45Speaker 3: with Colin Kaepernick?
- 7:47Speaker 4: Oh, that's right. It's setting out the noise.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Yeah, of angry Seahawks fans screaming at him.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Wild sentence, by the way. Remember that Bose commercial with
- 7:57Speaker 2: Colin Kaepernick? Real thing that happened. But anyways, yeah, that
- 8:01Speaker 2: was a lot of real hate.
- 8:02Speaker 3: It felt like there were two teams that were both
- 8:07Speaker 3: peaking at the same time, both with the young quarterbacks,
- 8:10Speaker 3: both with the coaches who legitimately did not like each other.
- 8:13Speaker 3: For people who forget, Pete Carroll and I love coach hate.
- 8:18Speaker 3: And I don't think Sean McVay and Sean McVay don't just.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Like each other. You're right. There's nothing there.
- 8:23Speaker 4: I think.
- 8:24Speaker 3: This is a great matchup from like a football perspective,
- 8:27Speaker 3: because I think that the Rams offense and the Seahawks
- 8:29Speaker 3: defense are the two single best units left in the postseason.
- 8:32Speaker 3: But from like a fan base narrative perspective, I don't
- 8:35Speaker 3: think it really does it for people the same way.
- 8:36Speaker 5: You're right.
- 8:38Speaker 1: I miss Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll despising each other
- 8:42Speaker 1: as they did. Like, it's a shame it didn't work
- 8:44Speaker 1: out for Pete with the Raiders because we could have
- 8:46Speaker 1: got it right back.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I know.
- 8:48Speaker 3: It didn't even like, I don't even think we got
- 8:51Speaker 3: like an angry handshake. And I was trying to remember
- 8:55Speaker 3: what's your deal was in college, right?
- 8:57Speaker 2: That was, yeah. Oh my gosh. What a great moment
- 9:01Speaker 2: that was.
- 9:01Speaker 3: And then there was a moment in the NFL where
- 9:04Speaker 3: I think Pete, I don't want to fake. Maybe this
- 9:08Speaker 3: has been, it's a false memory, but I think he
- 9:10Speaker 3: slapped him in the butt once, like running off a field.
- 9:12Speaker 1: He did that to Jim Schwartz. And Jim Schwartz was
- 9:16Speaker 1: ready to fight him.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Love Jim shorts.
- 9:19Speaker 1: That was an amazing moment. Cause I can only imagine
- 9:22Speaker 1: how hard he did it.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Right.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Can you imagine like a Jim Harbaugh handshake when he's
- 9:29Speaker 1: like amped up?
- 9:32Speaker 2: Can you imagine Jim, Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel having
- 9:35Speaker 2: a conversation by the way?
- 9:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 9:38Speaker 1: So for people who don't know this, Mike McDaniel, um,
- 9:41Speaker 1: continuing the lineage of Jim Harbaugh doing what he can.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Uh, he's a very diverse hire work.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Okay.
- 9:48Speaker 4: And he hired Mike McDaniel. Didn't see that coming, did you?
- 9:51Speaker 4: That's right. That's right.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh is the unlikeliest ally of all the allies.
- 9:55Speaker 1: But he hired Mike McDaniel to be his offensive coordinator.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Two guys who couldn't have more. opposite personalities, but what
- 10:01Speaker 1: is so amazing to me about it and what I
- 10:03Speaker 1: like for McDaniel truly is Mike McDaniel runs, which should
- 10:08Speaker 1: be seen as a very physical offense, but his teams
- 10:10Speaker 1: were seen as being very soft. Nobody is ever going
- 10:13Speaker 1: to call a Jim Harbaugh team soft. So you combine
- 10:16Speaker 1: what Mike McDaniel brings to you with Jim Harbaugh toughness.
- 10:19Speaker 3: And y'all might want to watch out. I, this was
- 10:21Speaker 3: like of all the hires that have come in coaching,
- 10:24Speaker 3: offensive coordinator, whatever. This is the only one where I
- 10:27Speaker 3: feel like it's been met with a universal approval rating
- 10:30Speaker 3: from fans, from the football nerds.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Everybody seems to love it.
- 10:34Speaker 3: It seems to me like an, genius choice for Mike McDaniel,
- 10:38Speaker 3: who I imagine wants to get right back in the
- 10:40Speaker 3: head coaching mix pretty quick. You see he pulled out
- 10:44Speaker 3: of the Browns. He was considered for head coaching, and
- 10:46Speaker 3: he was like, nah. I mean, I think from a
- 10:49Speaker 3: career perspective, you get to live in LA by the beach.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Nobody bothers you because it's the Chargers. You get to
- 10:56Speaker 3: follow Greg Roman. We saw Todd Munkin get that bump, right?
- 11:00Speaker 3: So I thought this was a perfect hire, even if
- 11:03Speaker 3: the idea of them talking for more than 60 seconds
- 11:06Speaker 3: is hilarious to me.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Harbaugh.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I don't know. Harbaugh is so interesting to me because
- 11:11Speaker 1: I feel like he apparently figures this out better than
- 11:14Speaker 1: one would expect, right? It's also so interesting that he
- 11:17Speaker 1: and his brother, our brothers, look exactly the same. We
- 11:19Speaker 1: don't feel that way about John Harbaugh at all. He
- 11:22Speaker 1: seems to be a somewhat normal, well-adjusted person.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it is weird. It's like a perfect case study
- 11:31Speaker 3: in nature versus nurture. And I've been around both of them, and, like, interpersonally,
- 11:38Speaker 3: they are exactly how they seem. Like, there's no affect. Like,
- 11:42Speaker 3: Jim Harbaugh legitimately is that strange in person, and John
- 11:45Speaker 3: Harbaugh is that normal in person.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Jim also seems to be exactly all the way down
- 11:50Speaker 1: to the face like his father, and I can only
- 11:53Speaker 1: imagine how his father went over with people. He's of
- 11:55Speaker 1: an entirely different generation. Like, before, we had a tolerance
- 11:58Speaker 1: for being a weirdo.
- 11:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Before we had a tolerance for being a weirdo.
- 12:03Speaker 3: But maybe Daniel's also very, he's not, he's odd, man.
- 12:07Speaker 1: He's a completely different archetype of weirdo.
- 12:10Speaker 4: And they're going to bring.
- 12:11Speaker 1: This together with their quarterback who used to cut his
- 12:13Speaker 1: own hair.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I think they're going to have to hire a defense
- 12:18Speaker 3: coordinator because I think they're, who I think is very good.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Their defense coach, I think is going to get a
- 12:23Speaker 3: job too.
- 12:24Speaker 5: So.
- 12:25Speaker 2: You know, we'll see. Did any of the hires that
- 12:28Speaker 2: have happened so far?
- 12:29Speaker 3: So we got Harbaugh to the Giants, Sala to the Titans.
- 12:36Speaker 4: I don't know if he owes people money.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Sala?
- 12:38Speaker 1: But, I mean, this is going to be his last
- 12:41Speaker 1: head coaching job. Yeah. That's why I don't understand him
- 12:45Speaker 1: doing this. I don't see a world where it works
- 12:47Speaker 1: for anybody on that job.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Oh, you're saying, like, why would he choose that job? Yes.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Uh.
- 12:55Speaker 3: First of all, I have a theory on that job
- 12:56Speaker 3: and him that is completely galaxy brained. But until the
- 13:01Speaker 3: hire happened, Bo, it really seemed like they were going
- 13:03Speaker 3: with Matt Nagy.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Do you see all that reporting?
- 13:06Speaker 4: I did see that. And that leads to my point.
- 13:08Speaker 1: The people that were willing to hire Matt Nagy, that's
- 13:11Speaker 1: who you went to work for.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Or galaxy brain.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Those people put out the Matt Nagy stuff so that
- 13:19Speaker 3: when they hired Robert Sala, Titans fans were.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Like, oh my God, this is amazing.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Like the reverse smokescreen. Interesting.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Set the expectations real low and upset your fan base
- 13:31Speaker 3: and then make a move that everybody's cool with.
- 13:34Speaker 2: I don't think it's that bad of a job, though.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I really don't.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I know that ownership's odd and there's a lot of
- 13:40Speaker 3: odd stuff behind the scenes there, but I feel like
- 13:43Speaker 3: the bar is very low. There's an understanding that the
- 13:47Speaker 3: roster is still in a rebuild. And I liked what
- 13:50Speaker 3: I saw from the quarterback year one.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I really did. I think he's really talented.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I do think, and maybe that's the thing with Salah,
- 13:56Speaker 1: who just left a situation with the Jets where he
- 13:58Speaker 1: didn't have a quarterback. And he looks at this one
- 14:01Speaker 1: and he sees, oh, there is a quarterback. And I
- 14:04Speaker 1: think his understanding that he'll always be able to come
- 14:07Speaker 1: back home to.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Kyle if it comes down to it.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Because defensive coordinators, for reasons good and bad, don't stay
- 14:13Speaker 1: there very long.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Can I tell you another story about Robert Salah that
- 14:16Speaker 3: I think will be of particular interest to you? we
- 14:19Speaker 3: were at NFL Live. You know, we're on site for Mondays,
- 14:23Speaker 3: like wherever the game is, right? So we go out
- 14:26Speaker 3: like a three to five Eastern. So the coaches and
- 14:29Speaker 3: everybody's kind of starting to arrive. So Salah does this
- 14:33Speaker 3: thing every game. I think they've shown it a lot
- 14:36Speaker 3: on the broadcast where he runs the entire stadium. That's
- 14:38Speaker 3: why he's so jacked. You're wondering like, why is Robert
- 14:41Speaker 3: Salah in amazing shape? He literally runs up downs the
- 14:44Speaker 3: entire stadium before the game. He did it when he
- 14:46Speaker 3: was the head coach of the Jets. he did it
- 14:47Speaker 3: when he was a defense coordinator at San Francisco 49ers.
- 14:50Speaker 3: So we were at, I can't remember which game, but
- 14:51Speaker 3: it was a Niners game.
- 14:53Speaker 2: And we were at the NFL NFL at the end
- 14:56Speaker 2: of NFL live.
- 14:59Speaker 3: We, they showed on camera, they were like, Oh, there's
- 15:02Speaker 3: Robert Sala, like running up and down the stadium doing
- 15:05Speaker 3: his like, and I really didn't want to throw our
- 15:08Speaker 3: director under the bus, but we came back and I
- 15:12Speaker 3: had to point out, That was K.J.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Wright. He got bald profiled.
- 15:20Speaker 4: K.J.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Wright is the linebacker's coach for the.
- 15:22Speaker 4: San Francisco 49ers.
- 15:23Speaker 1: In case anybody wants to feel old. That's a new
- 15:26Speaker 1: generation of player-turned-coach. Oh my God, that's so funny. We
- 15:30Speaker 1: had a topic once on Do You Question on Highly Questionable.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And I'll never forget seeing this happen. And I imagine
- 15:37Speaker 1: it wasn't the first time this happened. At the time,
- 15:39Speaker 1: Purdue was coached by a dude named Darryl Hazel.
- 15:43Speaker 4: And he was black.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I think he had coached like at Kent state or
- 15:46Speaker 1: something before that. And it was a, do you question something?
- 15:49Speaker 1: I think it was, I want to say it was
- 15:51Speaker 1: Jerry kill who coached at Minnesota at the time.
- 15:53Speaker 4: And the clip is post game. It's time for the
- 15:55Speaker 4: coach handshake.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And Jerry kill walks up to a black dude and
- 15:59Speaker 1: goes to shake his hand. And the black dude goes
- 16:01Speaker 1: over there and directed him to the actual head coach
- 16:05Speaker 1: because they had walked up on the wrong black dude.
- 16:08Speaker 4: And I kind of, Why would you think it was two?
- 16:12Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
- 16:13Speaker 1: Like I kind of understood where it was that he
- 16:15Speaker 1: was coming from, but I, oh my God, I could
- 16:17Speaker 1: not stop laughing.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Could not stop. That's tough.
- 16:20Speaker 2: That's tough. What was the last time you got mixed up?
- 16:24Speaker 4: Nah. Let me think.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Cause something happened recently that made me ask the question of,
- 16:33Speaker 1: do you think I'm somebody else?
- 16:37Speaker 4: But I don't, I have not, I've not had it
- 16:39Speaker 4: in person.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I have always like, so for example, one time inside
- 16:43Speaker 1: the NFL asked me to come on. Okay. And this is,
- 16:47Speaker 1: I think it was on Showtime. So, you know, James Brown,
- 16:49Speaker 1: Phil Sims, Ray Lewis was doing the show at the time.
- 16:53Speaker 1: And Brandon Marshall couldn't make it for whatever reason. And
- 16:55Speaker 1: they asked me to come. And I did tell my
- 16:58Speaker 1: guy to ask them, are you sure they're not intending
- 17:02Speaker 1: to call Dahani Jones? Because that's a very player show.
- 17:08Speaker 5: Uh.
- 17:09Speaker 2: I don't get it a lot.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Yeah, you got to stand alone out.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Here, right?
- 17:16Speaker 3: I was going to say, there's no Cassidy Hubbard walking
- 17:19Speaker 3: around doing NFL.
- 17:20Speaker 4: I mean, Michelle Steele.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was one.
- 17:25Speaker 3: But yeah, when I was younger, I used to get
- 17:29Speaker 3: mixed up more for other Asians, but not so much
- 17:31Speaker 3: these days.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Yeah, now I do have to remember, we got this
- 17:35Speaker 1: game that's actually going to happen here.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, sorry. Hey, man, we're having a good time, baby.
- 17:38Speaker 4: You know how it goes.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Am I being too hard on your man as you
- 17:43Speaker 1: are the sympathizer? And I call him same, Darnold. Am
- 17:47Speaker 1: I being too hard on him? Because he's been rather
- 17:49Speaker 1: cheeky for the last month or so. Yeah. No.
- 17:53Speaker 3: So the second half of the season, it really started
- 17:55Speaker 3: with the Rams game in week 11. The offense kind
- 17:58Speaker 3: of fell off a cliff, particularly the passing attack. Statistically,
- 18:01Speaker 3: this is borne out. It's not just like turnovers and,
- 18:05Speaker 3: you know, the satisfaction of those, like the passing attack
- 18:08Speaker 3: became way worse. And I think, you know, so you're
- 18:14Speaker 3: just pointing out what's factual, frankly. I will say the
- 18:18Speaker 3: run game started improving, though, around the same time and
- 18:21Speaker 3: has gotten better and better and better as the season
- 18:23Speaker 3: has gone along. And I think you saw, certainly against
- 18:26Speaker 3: San Francisco, which is a very winded defense, obviously, when
- 18:30Speaker 3: the run game has been dominant, it does settle him
- 18:34Speaker 3: to some degree. And I think that's kind of the
- 18:35Speaker 3: key in this one, right? Like, cause they ran the
- 18:37Speaker 3: ball really well on the Rams in week 16. If
- 18:40Speaker 3: they can do that again with Kenneth Walker, who's been really,
- 18:42Speaker 3: really good as of late, then I'm feeling good about Darnold.
- 18:46Speaker 3: If it ends up being like a drop back, let's
- 18:47Speaker 3: see who could throw you out of this thing. You're
- 18:49Speaker 3: not feeling good given what this defense, this defensive coordinator
- 18:53Speaker 3: has done to him. So yeah, he, he, he is
- 18:57Speaker 3: not carrying this team right now. And I don't think
- 19:00Speaker 3: he would say that either. It just kind of comes
- 19:02Speaker 3: down to whether or not he's going to make the
- 19:05Speaker 3: sort of boneheaded mistakes we've seen against this defense, man.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I got us back to talking about the game and
- 19:10Speaker 1: talk about ginger cuz, and I already got us a
- 19:12Speaker 1: tangent that I forgot about. We're going to wind up
- 19:14Speaker 1: talking about San Francisco as much as we talk about
- 19:16Speaker 1: anybody else. Have you paid attention to how apparently an
- 19:19Speaker 1: urban legend is now maybe affecting the way that San
- 19:22Speaker 1: Francisco can attract players? Because I'm going to be honest
- 19:24Speaker 1: with you, I need your help a little bit on
- 19:26Speaker 1: this because I don't really understand the urban legend.
- 19:29Speaker 3: It's like, okay, as best I understand it, because you
- 19:33Speaker 3: know what my metric is for when a story is
- 19:36Speaker 3: broken contained when my husband asks me about it. So
- 19:39Speaker 3: for those who don't know, my husband is not a
- 19:40Speaker 3: football person, doesn't even care about it. he gets all
- 19:44Speaker 3: of his football news from hood clips, which means I,
- 19:47Speaker 3: the so the questions he asks me are like very
- 19:50Speaker 3: uh specific but he was like what's going on with
- 19:55Speaker 3: this uh electrical thing and sarah scott was like all
- 19:57Speaker 3: right this means i gotta figure what the hell's going
- 19:59Speaker 3: on here so the theory is this like substation or
- 20:03Speaker 3: whatever could be explaining what's going on with all these
- 20:07Speaker 3: niners players and these injuries I believe I've seen scientists
- 20:10Speaker 3: debunk this.
- 20:12Speaker 1: And to be clear to people, it's like some electrical
- 20:14Speaker 1: substation that is right next door to the stadium or
- 20:16Speaker 1: the facility?
- 20:17Speaker 2: Yes, it's the practice facility.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Yes.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yeah, where they practice.
- 20:23Speaker 3: And because, you know, I think what's so confusing about
- 20:25Speaker 3: the Niners injuries is it's not one side of the ball.
- 20:29Speaker 3: it's not any particular kind of field. They seem to
- 20:32Speaker 3: happen everywhere in every stadium to lots of different kinds
- 20:36Speaker 3: of players.
- 20:36Speaker 2: So you can't look at Kyle Shannon and be like,
- 20:38Speaker 2: his offense is putting guys there. It is literally both
- 20:40Speaker 2: sides of the ball. It is contact. It is non-contact.
- 20:43Speaker 2: There's no through line to it. I did see that
- 20:47Speaker 2: Lynch was, I think he said he was going to
- 20:48Speaker 2: look into it. Did I miss?
- 20:50Speaker 3: I don't know if I didn't get a fake news
- 20:51Speaker 3: on that. My theory, Bo, is just that they played
- 20:56Speaker 3: a lot of football because they go deep. They've been
- 20:58Speaker 3: going deep in Kyle Shanahan. They've been playing postseason games
- 21:02Speaker 3: for so many of the years. And because of the
- 21:04Speaker 3: NFL being the way it is, if you play a
- 21:06Speaker 3: lot of football, you're more likely to get hurt.
- 21:08Speaker 2: I know there's other teams that.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Have played a lot of football, like Philadelphia, that don't
- 21:11Speaker 3: seem to have the same issues. But there is pretty
- 21:14Speaker 3: clearly a correlation.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Detroit has the same issues, and they've played a good
- 21:17Speaker 1: bit of football the last couple of years.
- 21:19Speaker 3: If there's something I know about injuries, the more you play,
- 21:21Speaker 3: the more likely you are to get them. And that's
- 21:23Speaker 3: not even like in those games, right? Like you play
- 21:25Speaker 3: a lot of football, you get less of an off season,
- 21:28Speaker 3: you practice more. It's just, we think about how violent
- 21:33Speaker 3: and how physically taxing the sport is. And this is
- 21:35Speaker 3: why there's such outcry over adding games every year. Every
- 21:39Speaker 3: single game, every single additional week matters a lot.
- 21:42Speaker 4: I want to make sure that people understand this.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Somebody sent a tweet that said, it's this electrical substation
- 21:50Speaker 1: that's right next to the San Francisco 49ers practice facility.
- 21:53Speaker 1: And it caught on like wildfire on the internet And
- 21:57Speaker 1: it caught on with players where you had like agents
- 22:01Speaker 1: and the likes asking questions about, hey, what's going on here?
- 22:04Speaker 1: John Lynch at their end of season postmortem press conference said, yes,
- 22:08Speaker 1: that they have had to address this with people, that
- 22:10Speaker 1: this thing bounced around on the Internet. And now people
- 22:13Speaker 1: are afraid that they ligaments is getting wobbly because of
- 22:17Speaker 1: this thing that's next door, because somebody said it. on
- 22:22Speaker 1: the internet the problem is it was presented somewhat plausibly
- 22:26Speaker 1: in such a way that even rational thinking people had
- 22:29Speaker 1: to ask their smart friends hey this isn't real though is.
- 22:34Speaker 2: It and i i don't know enough about science um
- 22:42Speaker 2: it is crazy with the niners though right like yeah.
- 22:47Speaker 4: They're a fascinating franchise, man.
- 22:48Speaker 1: And they got, look, every now and then good teams
- 22:51Speaker 1: get their doors blown off.
- 22:52Speaker 4: But I did not.
- 22:53Speaker 1: That was, I thought, even as decimated as they were,
- 22:57Speaker 1: that spoke a lot to how strong Seattle has been,
- 23:00Speaker 1: the way that they just kicked their asses.
- 23:02Speaker 2: You know what it also spoke to, and I'm sorry,
- 23:04Speaker 2: this is going to sound like a hater comment, how
- 23:08Speaker 2: horrible the Eagles offense is.
- 23:10Speaker 4: What the hell?
- 23:13Speaker 2: Were you not thinking that watching gimpy? Like Sam Darnold was.
- 23:16Speaker 3: I thought he, you know, he didn't have to do
- 23:18Speaker 3: a lot, but you look fine. They were running rough
- 23:19Speaker 3: shot off them. I'm watching this thinking, damn Philadelphia.
- 23:23Speaker 2: You couldn't even put together a drive on this smash unit.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Hey, let me tell you something next year for both
- 23:30Speaker 1: Philadelphia and Buffalo is going to be really interesting to
- 23:33Speaker 1: see like how you recover from what just happened. Now
- 23:36Speaker 1: granted the last time the Eagles had a, how do
- 23:38Speaker 1: you recover from what just happened season?
- 23:39Speaker 4: They won a super bowl. Yeah.
- 23:42Speaker 1: It is full on chaos there, but that was a
- 23:46Speaker 1: loss where they decided to fire Sirianni. It's understandable because
- 23:49Speaker 1: you're not supposed to lose to that team.
- 23:51Speaker 3: You should not, they should not have lost second and,
- 23:54Speaker 3: you know, credit to Shanahan and Sala and all of that.
- 23:57Speaker 2: But like, that is, that looks, I don't think, I'm
- 24:00Speaker 2: not talking about the defense.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Cause I think that Niners offense, I mean, I saw
- 24:03Speaker 3: them move the ball despite injuries on, they beat teams
- 24:06Speaker 3: with Mac Jones. Like that's, They were a little bit
- 24:08Speaker 3: healthier on that side of the ball. They were a
- 24:09Speaker 3: lot healthier on that side of the ball. And like,
- 24:10Speaker 3: obviously they didn't have Kittle against the Seahawks.
- 24:13Speaker 2: That's respectable. Fine. Not being able to move the ball
- 24:16Speaker 2: on that defense is so bad.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:20Speaker 3: So I think the flip side of that, to go
- 24:22Speaker 3: back to Seahawks though, is like, that's why I'm not
- 24:24Speaker 3: overconfident about the Seahawks offense coming off of that beatdown,
- 24:27Speaker 3: because I don't think it's very impressive to, you know,
- 24:31Speaker 3: beat San Francisco.
- 24:32Speaker 1: All right, coming up next, we've got the AFC Championship game,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and whether or not we even need to pay attention
- 24:37Speaker 1: to it, given that one of the quarterbacks in it
- 24:40Speaker 1: is Jared Stidham. Every Friday from 6 to 7.30, it's

- 27:36Speaker 4: All right, we are back with Mita Kimes.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I love how everybody is invested in making these games
- 27:43Speaker 1: seem interesting no matter what. The NBA has this problem
- 27:46Speaker 1: where too many people in its media tell the truth, right?
- 27:48Speaker 1: They'll tell you what they think a game is not
- 27:50Speaker 1: going to be bad, everything else. Not in the NFL, boy.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I saw that boy Peter Schrag on TV talking about Stiddy.
- 27:57Speaker 4: He was hype.
- 27:58Speaker 1: He's just like, Bill Belichick chose Stiddy. Josh McDaniels chose Stiddy.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Sean Payton has chosen Stiddy. A bunch of guys that
- 28:08Speaker 1: have never actually really chosen a good quarterback before. Just
- 28:11Speaker 1: so we're clear, right? Belichick had Tom Brady. Josh McDaniels
- 28:16Speaker 1: had Tom Brady.
- 28:19Speaker 4: Who's the other one? Sean Payton I mean, he got
- 28:20Speaker 4: Drew Brees.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Well, he chose him as backup. Sean Payton did not
- 28:23Speaker 2: choose Jarrett.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Stanton to be starting quarterback.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's what I'm saying. That's an important distinction, right?
- 28:27Speaker 1: These guys had a good quarterback one time.
- 28:30Speaker 4: I know Drew Brees was good.
- 28:31Speaker 1: I knew Drew Brees was good by the time Sean
- 28:33Speaker 1: Payton made the decision on him.
- 28:34Speaker 4: You see what I'm saying?
- 28:35Speaker 1: Anyway, he's going to be starting in the AFC championship game.
- 28:38Speaker 1: They're going to get that game at home. They have
- 28:41Speaker 1: an incredible defense. They have won a Super Bowl 10
- 28:44Speaker 1: years ago in Denver with a terrible quarterback, but the
- 28:47Speaker 1: terrible quarterback was Peyton Manning, right? Like, he could still
- 28:49Speaker 1: do Peyton Manning-y things at times. They're going up against
- 28:54Speaker 1: the Patriots. Drake May did not look good against a
- 28:57Speaker 1: great defense when he had it at home, though he
- 28:59Speaker 1: still made some big plays.
- 29:01Speaker 4: To me, this feels like a game New England should win.
- 29:03Speaker 2: I agree.
- 29:05Speaker 3: I'll say one thing about the the run with Manning,
- 29:08Speaker 3: I think that defense, the no-fly zone defense, was better
- 29:11Speaker 3: than this Broncos defense.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Interesting.
- 29:13Speaker 3: So I think that's important here. I think the Texans
- 29:16Speaker 3: and the Seahawks were cut above Denver. I think we've
- 29:19Speaker 3: seen that. And I think New England... First of all,
- 29:22Speaker 3: Drake made his face like, I can't lay off defenses.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Good Lord, right?
- 29:25Speaker 4: You got to go.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Chargers, really good, really well coached. Texans might be the
- 29:29Speaker 3: best in the NFL next to Seattle. The Broncos.
- 29:32Speaker 2: And then if they could potentially base the Seahawks, right?
- 29:35Speaker 2: He did enough. And I thought he made some impressive plays.
- 29:38Speaker 2: But as far as like the other side of the ball.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I'm not going to lie to you and say like
- 29:41Speaker 3: Jared Stidham is the next Nick Foles.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I think he's competent.
- 29:46Speaker 3: So, you know, I watched his games to prepare for
- 29:48Speaker 3: this week. This is not, who was the last time
- 29:51Speaker 3: we saw like a truly Who was last backup quarterback
- 29:55Speaker 3: who had to play in a, other than Foles?
- 29:57Speaker 4: Foles had a run.
- 29:58Speaker 1: When Purdy got hurt in that game against the Eagles.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Jesus.
- 30:03Speaker 4: Did they even have a quarterback? I feel like they
- 30:05Speaker 4: was out there running the wing teeth.
- 30:06Speaker 2: It was Josh Johnson, I think. And then they talked
- 30:08Speaker 2: about like, does Christian McCaffrey going to have to go
- 30:09Speaker 2: into this game?
- 30:10Speaker 4: Yes, that's what it was.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 30:12Speaker 2: So Jared Stim is competent. I genuinely believe that.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Like after watching him, he is not going to pee
- 30:18Speaker 3: down his leg. He is not like a, should not
- 30:20Speaker 3: be playing in.
- 30:20Speaker 2: The NFL type of guy.
- 30:22Speaker 1: No, not at all.
- 30:23Speaker 2: But I do.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Unfortunately think for him, assuming the Patriots defense feels like
- 30:26Speaker 3: it's kind of peaking at the right time, like guys
- 30:28Speaker 3: have been getting healthy.
- 30:29Speaker 2: They look very well coached. I thought Milton Williams was
- 30:32Speaker 2: extraordinary in the last round. It was like their big signing.
- 30:35Speaker 3: So this is not like if you if sorry to
- 30:38Speaker 3: keep harping on this, but like if it was Jared
- 30:40Speaker 3: Stidham against the Niners, Bo with Sean Payton, I actually
- 30:43Speaker 3: think they could.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Move the ball on them.
- 30:46Speaker 3: I think the Patriots pose a bigger challenge. They're going
- 30:49Speaker 3: to have to force Drake made a fumble. And that's
- 30:51Speaker 3: been an issue for him. in the post season, this
- 30:54Speaker 3: defense is going to have to play the game of
- 30:56Speaker 3: their lives. Nick Bonito step right out, be a legend.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Patriots left tackle has been.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Struggling, right?
- 31:01Speaker 4: Yes, he has.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:02Speaker 2: It's been rough.
- 31:03Speaker 3: So I, I'm not going to tell you this is
- 31:05Speaker 3: going to be a good game, but I also don't
- 31:07Speaker 3: think it's going to be a blowout either.
- 31:08Speaker 2: I really don't because that defense.
- 31:10Speaker 1: You know, I think I'm talking myself into another direction
- 31:12Speaker 1: here because to be fair to Sean Payton, we have
- 31:16Speaker 1: seen him in new Orleans and even, I mean, He
- 31:21Speaker 1: did some things.
- 31:22Speaker 4: With Russell Wilson, right?
- 31:23Speaker 1: At a point in which Russell Wilson, it went from
- 31:26Speaker 1: let Russ cook to Russ is cooked, right? And he still,
- 31:29Speaker 1: I mean, Russell Wilson made the Pro Bowl that year
- 31:31Speaker 1: in spite of whatever was going on up there.
- 31:34Speaker 4: But they had non-terrible.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Offenses in New Orleans with Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Teddy Bridgewater.
- 31:46Speaker 4: Just, you know, a run of okay guys.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Now, the fact that Peyton convinced himself that Taysom Hill
- 31:52Speaker 1: could be that.
- 31:52Speaker 4: Dude, that part is a demerit.
- 31:55Speaker 1: But his ability to make it okay with him makes
- 31:58Speaker 1: you think that maybe just for this week, they can
- 32:00Speaker 1: pull it off.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Peyton's really good, too. Like, I think, like, maybe, I
- 32:06Speaker 2: don't know why. I feel like he hasn't gotten as
- 32:09Speaker 2: much appreciation for the job he's done with Bo Nix
- 32:13Speaker 2: in that offense this year.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Well, that's because you and I still don't think Bo
- 32:17Speaker 1: Nix is good and other people do.
- 32:20Speaker 2: I'll say this.
- 32:22Speaker 3: I'm watching the Broncos offense on tape every week and
- 32:24Speaker 3: I see the way Peyton, Sean Peyton, is so good
- 32:28Speaker 3: at creating matchup advantages for his guys. He's so good
- 32:31Speaker 3: in game. Like against Buffalo last week, you just saw
- 32:36Speaker 3: every time like a Bills defender got hurt, Peyton would
- 32:39Speaker 3: immediately find a way, score touchdown.
- 32:40Speaker 2: On them, right?
- 32:42Speaker 3: And I just think his unique ability to game plan
- 32:48Speaker 3: for the weaknesses of your defense, coupled with that defense,
- 32:52Speaker 3: coupled with the Broncos probably have the best offensive line
- 32:55Speaker 3: left in the playoff.
- 32:56Speaker 2: That matters a lot because the Patriots defense, I know
- 32:59Speaker 2: they've looked good.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Ooh, they faced the Chargers and the Texans offenses. And
- 33:03Speaker 3: those offensive lines are turnstiles. And this new Denver Broncos
- 33:07Speaker 3: offensive line is fantastic. So yeah, I'm not trying to
- 33:10Speaker 3: sell this to you as being like.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Jarrett Stidham's going to lead this team.
- 33:14Speaker 3: But I think there's enough factors at play that favor
- 33:18Speaker 3: Denver that could at least keep this close.
- 33:20Speaker 2: I'm picking New England, of course.
- 33:22Speaker 4: I'm going to be honest with you.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I'm so glad that you have watched Denver on film
- 33:26Speaker 1: and all of these things because this thing happens from
- 33:29Speaker 1: time to time. The clearest example I remember for me
- 33:34Speaker 1: was the 2011 49ers. And what happens is, A team
- 33:40Speaker 1: plays well and defies expectation. And I don't necessarily believe
- 33:48Speaker 1: it's going to keep going. And then it keeps going
- 33:50Speaker 1: and it keeps going. And the next thing you know,
- 33:53Speaker 1: it's the AFC championship game. And I have not actually
- 33:56Speaker 1: watched the Broncos for real play outside from that Buffalo game.
- 34:01Speaker 1: I mentioned the 11-49ers because I didn't watch them play
- 34:06Speaker 1: until that division round game against the Saints where Dante
- 34:09Speaker 1: Wittner knocked Pierre Thomas out at the goal line.
- 34:12Speaker 4: And I was like, shit, these boys be out here hitting.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, I would have loved to watch these guys
- 34:18Speaker 1: play football. And then I was on it after that
- 34:21Speaker 1: with Denver. I've watched enough of them in late game windows.
- 34:26Speaker 5: Right.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Because something to they play a lot of games in
- 34:28Speaker 1: the late game window where they're not the game of
- 34:30Speaker 1: the week. So you just kind of pop in like
- 34:32Speaker 1: I'm at Nick's house and it pops in on the
- 34:33Speaker 1: TV that's set for the Red Zone channel. And you
- 34:36Speaker 1: see Bo Nix feast or famine or something going on
- 34:38Speaker 1: along those lines. I just know the defense is good.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Don't ask me who play on it. I just know
- 34:43Speaker 1: they're good. I know they got Nick Bonito, who does
- 34:46Speaker 1: not look like I would have think a Nick Bonito
- 34:48Speaker 1: would look, you know, but he good.
- 34:50Speaker 4: He is fast.
- 34:52Speaker 3: I mean, he, I know maybe this could take us
- 34:55Speaker 3: to a Josh Allen conversation during the game when Josh
- 34:59Speaker 3: Allen had the goofy fumble before halftime, which was his
- 35:02Speaker 3: worst play of the game. I made the mistake of
- 35:06Speaker 3: posting on Twitter. That's an incredible play by Nick Bonito.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Because it was an incredible play by Nick Bonito. He
- 35:12Speaker 3: was rushing the passer. He reverses field and chases down
- 35:16Speaker 3: Josh Allen in the open field and gets an arm
- 35:19Speaker 3: on it. And then Josh Allen's holding the ball like this.
- 35:21Speaker 3: And that's entirely on him. No question.
- 35:24Speaker 2: But for Bonito to do that outrageous play.
- 35:28Speaker 3: This is how I knew the Josh Allen thing was
- 35:30Speaker 3: going to go off the rails this week. I posted that,
- 35:32Speaker 3: and immediately there were people who were, I got ratioed, like,
- 35:35Speaker 3: you're making excuses for Josh Allen.
- 35:37Speaker 2: I was like, what is happening?
- 35:39Speaker 4: I was trying to say Jake Bonito.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Made an amazing play, and I deleted it. I was like,
- 35:42Speaker 2: you know what? I'm not going to tweet about Josh
- 35:43Speaker 2: Allen today because this is apparently going to be radioactive.
- 35:47Speaker 1: I had somebody accuse me of making excuses for Josh Allen.
- 35:51Speaker 1: And if they think me and you are making excuses
- 35:53Speaker 1: for Josh Allen, what has the world come to?
- 35:57Speaker 2: Like I started getting hit with the, well, if Lamar,
- 36:01Speaker 2: I'm like, pardon me? Mina Kimes?
- 36:07Speaker 3: You're accusing me of being anti-Lamar? Like I was like,
- 36:11Speaker 3: all right, I'm not gonna, I'm just gonna stay away
- 36:13Speaker 3: from this one. But I would, I just want more
- 36:15Speaker 3: thought of Bonito before we get to Allen stuff. That
- 36:18Speaker 3: three-play sequence, dude. Before the half, he forces a fumble.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Second play, he stops to run. Third play, he forces
- 36:24Speaker 3: another fumble. One of the most impactful three-play sequences you
- 36:27Speaker 3: will see from a defensive player all year long. He's
- 36:30Speaker 3: been extraordinary this year, and I think he has potential
- 36:32Speaker 3: to take over this game.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Josh Allen turns everybody on the internet into Sam Darnold.
- 36:39Speaker 4: They all be seeing ghosts.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Because the thing that happens with the internet stuff now is,
- 36:44Speaker 1: it's so tribal, right? Like it's not about your point.
- 36:47Speaker 1: It's about whose side you're on. And people just argue
- 36:51Speaker 1: the side. So once the conclusion has been drawn, by definition,
- 36:55Speaker 1: like the word that worries me the most on the
- 36:58Speaker 1: internet is y'all. Anytime somebody makes a reference to what
- 37:02Speaker 1: y'all are doing, right? So one person thinks that Josh
- 37:07Speaker 1: Allen is the greatest quarterback of all time. there's another
- 37:14Speaker 1: person who thinks that Lamar Jackson is overrated.
- 37:18Speaker 4: Those aren't always the same people, right?
- 37:22Speaker 1: And so if you have enough of a critical mass
- 37:24Speaker 1: of people saying one thing on one side, and then
- 37:26Speaker 1: people saying one thing on the other, then it turns
- 37:28Speaker 1: into a, but y'all be dah, dah, dah. And it's like, oh, whoa,
- 37:31Speaker 1: wait a minute, wait a minute. Like this could go
- 37:34Speaker 1: a bunch of different ways. And so with Allen, I mean, look,
- 37:38Speaker 1: we have, I've said what's going on for years, and
- 37:40Speaker 1: people thought I was crazy, and then it really just
- 37:42Speaker 1: came to bear here. It's some people heavily invested in
- 37:45Speaker 1: Josh Allen being that dude. They know who they are,
- 37:47Speaker 1: only they know what their reasons are, but they're there.
- 37:50Speaker 1: And we ain't never had a dude in year eight
- 37:53Speaker 1: have four turnovers in a playoff game and be a
- 37:56Speaker 1: former MVP who still has not gotten to a Super Bowl,
- 37:59Speaker 1: and the prevailing sentiment from the media was, isn't it sad?
- 38:04Speaker 5: What? So.
- 38:08Speaker 3: Here's where I landed on that, because I don't think
- 38:09Speaker 3: anything you said is wrong. And obviously, you know, he
- 38:13Speaker 3: had a bad game, right? He's been good in the postseason.
- 38:17Speaker 4: He was bad.
- 38:18Speaker 3: And the same could be said of Lamar Jackson. And
- 38:22Speaker 3: I've tried to say that about Lamar Jackson in the past,
- 38:25Speaker 3: and it's been kind of the flip side of it.
- 38:27Speaker 3: But I think.
- 38:30Speaker 2: What I have seen, what really struck me, especially with
- 38:34Speaker 2: an innocent.
- 38:35Speaker 6: Post about Nick Bonito forcing a fumble with an hustle
- 38:37Speaker 6: play is there's been a lot of built up, clearly
- 38:42Speaker 6: a lot of built up feelings amongst sports fans that
- 38:45Speaker 6: the media has been too high on Josh Allen.
- 38:48Speaker 2: And I think there's validity to that, right?
- 38:51Speaker 3: I have my, my stance on it has about like
- 38:54Speaker 3: perception of Josh Allen and kind of the way he's
- 38:56Speaker 3: talked about is I never agreed with the idea that
- 39:00Speaker 3: he was in a tier above Lamar and Joe. I have,
- 39:04Speaker 3: and you know this because we've talked about quarterbacks forever,
- 39:07Speaker 3: I've felt pretty strongly there's a big four in the
- 39:10Speaker 3: NFL right now, those three and Mahomes. I have continued
- 39:15Speaker 3: to insist that Mahomes is still the best quarterback on earth.
- 39:17Speaker 3: You guys can go to any of my quarterback rankings
- 39:19Speaker 3: and see this. And then I have felt that the
- 39:22Speaker 3: other three, I probably would put Allen and Lamar of
- 39:24Speaker 3: a bro personally, but just, you know, they're pretty, pretty equal.
- 39:27Speaker 3: So I have always objected to the idea and I've
- 39:29Speaker 3: seen people that to do this, that Allen was above them.
- 39:31Speaker 3: That's I've been clear about it. So I think I
- 39:35Speaker 3: am sympathetic to kind of the general annoyance. I have
- 39:39Speaker 3: also seen this week, people arguing that Josh Allen is
- 39:42Speaker 3: no longer a top five quarterback. Josh Allen is, you know, like,
- 39:46Speaker 3: and like, all right, like, To me, I think we've seen,
- 39:52Speaker 3: and this always happens with anything on the internet, the
- 39:54Speaker 3: pendulum has swung a little bit too far in terms
- 39:57Speaker 3: of a reaction to a playoff game. But I understand
- 40:01Speaker 3: that it's driven by what people have been seeing, the
- 40:05Speaker 3: way this quarterback has been talked about the last few years.
- 40:07Speaker 3: And I get it.
- 40:09Speaker 2: I get it. I understand it.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Josh Allen is what if David Duvall had panned out?
- 40:16Speaker 1: And so when I say that, When Tiger Woods first
- 40:18Speaker 1: hit the scene and really took it on fire.
- 40:21Speaker 4: We needed to find a rival, right?
- 40:23Speaker 1: And David Duvall was the first guy that we really
- 40:26Speaker 1: trotted out there to try to make into a rival.
- 40:29Speaker 1: And then it didn't work. And then it kind of
- 40:31Speaker 1: moved to Phil Mickelson, right? Like, you know, we kind
- 40:33Speaker 1: of bounced around to different people. I guess Maria Sharapova,
- 40:36Speaker 1: these are the- Yeah, that's the one I thought of, yeah.
- 40:38Speaker 4: Serena Williams.
- 40:39Speaker 1: But the difference is Sharapova, to be fair to her,
- 40:42Speaker 1: won their first couple of matches, right?
- 40:45Speaker 4: And so there was reason to think it was a thing.
- 40:47Speaker 1: And then Serena just kicked her ass for the rest
- 40:50Speaker 1: of their lives, right? After that, it happened. But Allen
- 40:54Speaker 1: actually did turn into that guy. What's weird to me
- 40:58Speaker 1: about it, and I guess maybe it's just in terms
- 41:00Speaker 1: of games they played against each other or whatever, But
- 41:03Speaker 1: the idea that it is clear that Josh Allen's a
- 41:05Speaker 1: better quarterback than Lamar Jackson is insane. Like if you
- 41:07Speaker 1: go look at what Lamar did last year, that was
- 41:10Speaker 1: one of the greatest individual seasons. Went to like 41
- 41:12Speaker 1: touchdowns and four interceptions or something like that. Like this
- 41:15Speaker 1: idea that Lamar Jackson can't pass is insane, right? There's
- 41:19Speaker 1: legitimate debate about which of those two guys is better. Now,
- 41:22Speaker 1: if you are a type who likes a big, strong,
- 41:25Speaker 1: hard-throwing quarterback, then Josh Allen's going to be the one
- 41:28Speaker 1: that you prefer, right? If you like a full-on, legitimate,
- 41:31Speaker 1: dual threat, Lamar Jackson's going to be your guy. There's
- 41:34Speaker 1: room to decide between those two. What I found to
- 41:37Speaker 1: be strange about it is we never truly positioned Mahomes
- 41:40Speaker 1: and Lamar as rivals.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 41:43Speaker 1: It was never which one you got between the two
- 41:45Speaker 1: of those. But we did do that with Josh Allen,
- 41:48Speaker 1: even though Mahomes is kicking his keister or beating them
- 41:51Speaker 1: every time the game mattered.
- 41:52Speaker 4: And it felt very much contrived.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Right. But the sad part is, and I think you
- 41:57Speaker 1: agree with me on this. Josh Allen is damn near
- 42:00Speaker 1: as good as they say he is. It's just that
- 42:03Speaker 1: when he's bad, he's so much worse than they say
- 42:06Speaker 1: he is.
- 42:07Speaker 3: I think also, because I totally agree with everything you
- 42:11Speaker 3: said about why is Josh Allen being positioned here, even though,
- 42:19Speaker 3: like you said, Mahomes had the head-to-head and all that.
- 42:21Speaker 2: To me.
- 42:25Speaker 3: This felt what we've seen over the last week. And
- 42:27Speaker 3: the frustration also just felt like a lot of spillover
- 42:30Speaker 3: from the MVP stuff last year. And it like, it
- 42:33Speaker 3: was like kind of simmering. And I, you know, I
- 42:36Speaker 3: said this, I voted for Lamar. I've said my reasoning, whatever.
- 42:38Speaker 3: I also thought it was close, but I still thought
- 42:42Speaker 3: Lamar deserved it. And I think people were very surprised
- 42:46Speaker 3: when Alan won. But because of the post-season results, there
- 42:50Speaker 3: wasn't like quite the blowback necessarily with Lamar and, And
- 42:53Speaker 3: then I think it like simmered, simmered, simmered, simmered for
- 42:56Speaker 3: a year. And it felt like it came back to
- 42:58Speaker 3: the surface in a big way. Because the thing that
- 43:01Speaker 3: Allen supporters have always had on Jackson is postseason, pointing
- 43:04Speaker 3: to the postseason. So for Allen to fall flat like
- 43:07Speaker 3: that in a postseason game was like an uno reverse card.
- 43:10Speaker 3: And suddenly, you know, that didn't exist anymore. Yeah.
- 43:14Speaker 2: And, you know, I get the frustration.
- 43:16Speaker 3: Like I said, I think people are right when they
- 43:18Speaker 3: point to the way he's talked about, and I have
- 43:21Speaker 3: disagreed with the idea that people have put him above
- 43:23Speaker 3: or put him in the Mahomes tier.
- 43:26Speaker 2: But, you know, it is impossible to.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And nobody wants to talk about the one thing, right?
- 43:33Speaker 4: Like, this is.
- 43:35Speaker 1: It is very interesting that Black quarterbacks have not.
- 43:39Speaker 1: The idea of having a Black quarterback is no longer
- 43:42Speaker 1: really provocative.
- 43:44Speaker 4: But the idea of the.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Black quarterback is still provocative, if that makes sense.
- 43:48Speaker 4: You know what I mean? We are past a point.
- 43:51Speaker 1: I said when we did our series last year on
- 43:52Speaker 1: the top 25 athletes of the last 25 years that
- 43:56Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, I felt like, was the last black quarterback
- 43:58Speaker 1: to really be up against blackness when he came into
- 44:00Speaker 1: the league. We're talking about moving you to a different
- 44:02Speaker 1: position and stuff like that. I don't think that's going
- 44:05Speaker 1: to happen anymore. But it's so obviously the subtext of
- 44:10Speaker 1: what is going on here. And we knew it was
- 44:11Speaker 1: the subtext because of the way them Bills Mafia people
- 44:13Speaker 1: were about Tyrod when all he did was get him
- 44:16Speaker 1: to the playoffs for the first time in 19 years
- 44:18Speaker 1: and all they wanted to do was get him the
- 44:19Speaker 1: hell out of there and then lie for two years
- 44:21Speaker 1: about how good Josh Allen was.
- 44:23Speaker 4: Like the investment was so obvious in what happened.
- 44:25Speaker 1: And like I say, my favorite thing about it, you
- 44:27Speaker 1: and I, we were holding out on Josh Allen. My
- 44:29Speaker 1: favorite thing is, thank goodness he's actually good. It's been
- 44:32Speaker 1: so much fun to watch. And then they make it hard.
- 44:36Speaker 2: And I think also this isn't just a fan thing.
- 44:39Speaker 3: Mike Sando does these great QB tiers, which they're not
- 44:43Speaker 3: his tiers. He's surveying executives and people around the league.
- 44:46Speaker 3: And consistently, I have seen in these tiers, Lamar be
- 44:49Speaker 3: underrated relative to Allen and Burrow. And these are NFL
- 44:53Speaker 3: coaches and executives. This is a real thing.
- 44:56Speaker 2: At this point, my.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Feeling is anyone who does not acknowledge Lamar how good
- 45:01Speaker 3: Lamar Jackson is as a passer is not worth my time.
- 45:05Speaker 3: I just genuinely, I'm not going to get in these
- 45:07Speaker 3: arguments anymore. You don't, you're, you're, you do not have
- 45:10Speaker 3: the ability to watch.
- 45:10Speaker 2: Football to me. I just, I just statistically film any
- 45:14Speaker 2: of it. I'm just not doing it with you. It
- 45:16Speaker 2: is funny.
- 45:17Speaker 3: So Dominique to there's absolutely like a huge racial undertone
- 45:21Speaker 3: to all of this.
- 45:22Speaker 2: And like, it is funny. I do see the.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Registered voters, NFL players thing going around by the way.
- 45:31Speaker 3: somebody put out all the NFL positions and who they
- 45:34Speaker 3: were registered to vote for.
- 45:35Speaker 4: I saw that.
- 45:36Speaker 2: And they were like, this is obviously a.
- 45:37Speaker 3: Race that you know is talking about. It's kind of
- 45:39Speaker 3: how I feel about this.
- 45:41Speaker 2: I will say this.
- 45:41Speaker 3: When people are talking about the double standards with Josh Allen,
- 45:45Speaker 3: it's an interesting conversation.
- 45:47Speaker 2: It's a nuanced conversation. And people are rightfully bringing it.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson is the counterpoint.
- 45:52Speaker 3: And I think that is the basis of this conversation.
- 45:54Speaker 2: I see Jalen Hurts fans trying to edge their way
- 45:57Speaker 2: to the conversation.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Get out of here.
- 46:02Speaker 3: They're like, well, you know, people say Jalen hurts. You know, he,
- 46:06Speaker 3: Josh Allen had the great offensive line.
- 46:08Speaker 2: He's got, I'm like, we are not comparing the bills
- 46:10Speaker 2: and the Eagles roster. We're not doing this. We're not
- 46:12Speaker 2: comparing these quarterbacks. You get out of this conversation.
- 46:15Speaker 4: You're not helping the case.
- 46:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 46:16Speaker 1: You got to go back over there a little closer
- 46:18Speaker 1: to the median.
- 46:19Speaker 5: Right.
- 46:22Speaker 2: He goes, fans are getting mad at me for saying this.
- 46:26Speaker 4: We over here at club outlier, all right?
- 46:28Speaker 1: Like you need to go back over there with the
- 46:33Speaker 1: run of the mill, right?
- 46:35Speaker 2: And you can see it in there. They're coming out.
- 46:37Speaker 2: They came out.
- 46:38Speaker 3: Well, the one I saw, Jalen Hurts, people act like
- 46:42Speaker 3: he was so off with the playoffs, but he didn't
- 46:43Speaker 3: turn over the ball once.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Congratulations. Raise the banner. Zero turnover. What are we doing?
- 46:50Speaker 4: Stop it.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Stop it.
- 46:52Speaker 4: God, I can't wait for the Eagles to come back
- 46:54Speaker 4: around next year. I cannot.
- 46:56Speaker 1: While we're here with the Bills, though, before I let
- 46:58Speaker 1: you go, this is the first show that I have done.
- 47:01Speaker 1: We were recording during the Terry Pegula press conference with
- 47:07Speaker 1: Brandon Bean. And so, look, I think it's fair to
- 47:10Speaker 1: say the wild part is I don't think McDermott getting
- 47:12Speaker 1: fired is nearly as egregious as a lot of people do,
- 47:15Speaker 1: especially since they've had terrible playoff defenses.
- 47:17Speaker 4: And that's his thing.
- 47:19Speaker 1: And how close he was to getting shit canned in
- 47:21Speaker 1: the last couple of years. I think we all recall that.
- 47:23Speaker 1: But it was the idea that none of us think
- 47:25Speaker 1: that roster is good enough. All of us think that
- 47:27Speaker 1: roster is too Josh Allen-centric. And from what we learned
- 47:31Speaker 1: from Tyler Dunn's series on McDermott a couple of years ago,
- 47:34Speaker 1: that's not really a McDermott is not a guy that
- 47:37Speaker 1: wants to just give the ball to his quarterback and
- 47:39Speaker 1: go say, go make the world happen. McDermott was a
- 47:42Speaker 1: assistant on the 2015 Panthers. And he saw Cam Newton
- 47:45Speaker 1: as being the problem. Like that's, that's the kind of
- 47:48Speaker 1: guy that we're dealing with there. But then they promoted
- 47:51Speaker 1: the GM to run the whole operation. And that's where
- 47:55Speaker 1: people are like, Hey, okay. So I feel like I
- 47:59Speaker 1: watched that press conference with Terry Pagula.
- 48:00Speaker 4: And if you didn't see it, go check it out.
- 48:03Speaker 1: And, I think all of us then had a certain
- 48:07Speaker 1: empathy for Josh Allen. At least those of us who
- 48:10Speaker 1: have ever worked for a moron before, because it appeared
- 48:13Speaker 1: that that team is being run by a moron.
- 48:16Speaker 3: I feel like Terry Pagula saw Steve Bishotti, the Ravens owner,
- 48:19Speaker 3: be like very blunt and get praised for it and thought,
- 48:22Speaker 3: let me cook. Because the Steve Bishotti presence was legitimately
- 48:26Speaker 3: one of the more entertaining presence I've seen from an owner.
- 48:30Speaker 3: And Steve Bishotti, by the way, wisely took his quarterback side. We,
- 48:35Speaker 3: I mean, that's a whole other conversation, but he chose,
- 48:37Speaker 3: he chose the quarterback. Uh, the, the, the craziest thing
- 48:41Speaker 3: about this. So I guess if you've been living under
- 48:43Speaker 3: rack and you missed it, the, the biggest moment that
- 48:46Speaker 3: is really just broken everyone. Like, I mean, I was
- 48:50Speaker 3: just like an incredible moment from an owner, uh, Brandon Beans.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Asked about the drafts. Terry Pagula is like, hold up.
- 48:59Speaker 2: I got something to say.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Notable, right?
- 49:02Speaker 3: Because he wasn't even asked about it. He was like, no,
- 49:04Speaker 3: the world needs to hear me. Brandon Bean didn't want
- 49:07Speaker 3: Keon Coleman, a wide receiver who was still on your
- 49:10Speaker 3: football team. The coaching staff did. So he simultaneously throws
- 49:14Speaker 3: Sean McDermott under the bus, his own wide receiver, Keon Coleman,
- 49:18Speaker 3: and the coaching staff who by the way, is still
- 49:21Speaker 3: like Joe Brady's being considered for your head coaching job.
- 49:24Speaker 3: It was one of the all time.
- 49:26Speaker 4: What?
- 49:27Speaker 3: Like, why are you talking moments from an owner that
- 49:30Speaker 3: I've ever seen?
- 49:31Speaker 2: And like, I, it's still an attractive job. You know,
- 49:36Speaker 2: you got Josh Allen, but like, who boy?
- 49:39Speaker 1: But with a player who just caught a touchdown in
- 49:42Speaker 1: this playoff game, by the way, who something is not
- 49:46Speaker 1: right there with him, obviously. And he seems to clearly
- 49:48Speaker 1: have struggles with self-confidence. And this ain't going to make
- 49:51Speaker 1: it better.
- 49:53Speaker 3: It's also just like I've seen Bill's fans. Well, you've
- 49:55Speaker 3: been you guys have been criticizing Keon Coleman.
- 49:57Speaker 2: I'm not his boss.
- 50:01Speaker 3: Can you imagine if like the head of your company
- 50:04Speaker 3: was like out there crap?
- 50:05Speaker 2: And it's so hard. It's not like. It's so easy
- 50:09Speaker 2: to say nothing.
- 50:12Speaker 4: Yeah. I'll say this though.
- 50:15Speaker 1: A big part of the Keon Coleman story and it
- 50:18Speaker 1: not working out. And of course, obviously I want it
- 50:20Speaker 1: to work out. He seems delightful, right? Like I think
- 50:24Speaker 1: we all had a, we want it to work out.
- 50:27Speaker 1: The issue with Coleman is who was next in the
- 50:31Speaker 1: draft and who was next was lab Matt Conkey and
- 50:35Speaker 1: Matt Conkey, Mac Conkey. I want to be very clear
- 50:38Speaker 1: of what I'm saying. Mac Conkey is great. He's been very,
- 50:43Speaker 1: very good with the Chargers. And what we got here
- 50:47Speaker 1: is not only did you not take a player that
- 50:49Speaker 1: was better, you didn't take a player that we all
- 50:52Speaker 1: know the Mafia would have loved. He'd have been a
- 50:55Speaker 1: made man in 18 months.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Josh Allen was throwing balls.
- 51:02Speaker 3: Go balls to Brandon cooks all season. Like it's not
- 51:05Speaker 3: just the Coleman thing. Brandon being like your entire, he,
- 51:08Speaker 3: I mean, has any sports radio clip aged worse than
- 51:14Speaker 3: Brandon being freaking out about being asked about the right
- 51:16Speaker 3: receiver group last season.
- 51:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Like what?
- 51:19Speaker 3: And you, and immediately by the way, after this Coleman thing,
- 51:22Speaker 3: everybody's posting clips. Cause I guess they did some, I
- 51:24Speaker 3: don't know if it was hard knocks or whatever. Everybody's
- 51:27Speaker 3: posting clips of Brandon being talking about how bad they
- 51:30Speaker 3: wanted Keon Coleman.
- 51:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 51:32Speaker 2: So the whole thing stinks, honestly. It stinks.
- 51:37Speaker 3: I guess if I had to give him one piece
- 51:41Speaker 3: of praise, Terry Pagula, most owners would have just leaked
- 51:45Speaker 3: that to an insider.
- 51:47Speaker 5: Yes.
- 51:47Speaker 3: At least he said it with his chest. But it
- 51:51Speaker 3: still stinks. And if you're a fan, you should be
- 51:52Speaker 3: upset about it.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Terry Pagula played a role in firing Sean McDermott, who
- 51:59Speaker 1: won five. AFC East in a row, and then they
- 52:02Speaker 1: went to the playoffs again this year. And also James Franklin,
- 52:05Speaker 1: because he's the money behind Penn State football. Like, he's
- 52:09Speaker 1: fired a couple of pretty good coaches. That it was
- 52:12Speaker 1: understandable why you would fire them, but shit better work
- 52:15Speaker 1: on the other end.
- 52:17Speaker 3: I don't know anything about hockey, but Sabres fans seem
- 52:19Speaker 3: to despise him.
- 52:21Speaker 1: He appears to be similar to Jim Dolan, in that
- 52:25Speaker 1: Jim Dolan is a terrible, or has been a fairly
- 52:28Speaker 1: terrible owner for the Knicks, but not as bad with
- 52:31Speaker 1: the Rangers.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 52:33Speaker 4: And it seems to go kind of in the opposite
- 52:35Speaker 4: order on this one.
- 52:36Speaker 5: Right.
- 52:36Speaker 1: But yeah, Sabres fans seem to, it is fascinating to
- 52:39Speaker 1: me when that happens, where the fan bases have these
- 52:42Speaker 1: like divergent opinions of the same person.
- 52:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 52:46Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 52:46Speaker 3: I was, Alan was like that for a little bit
- 52:49Speaker 3: with the Blazers and Seahawks. I look, yeah, the, I don't,
- 52:56Speaker 3: I think firing McDermott was a great injustice for the
- 52:59Speaker 3: reasons you described.
- 53:00Speaker 2: I thought the timing was very weird. And then, of course,
- 53:02Speaker 2: coupled with the bean promotion, it was odd.
- 53:04Speaker 3: But the last thing I'll say on the matter is this.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Who are you going to hire? Like, that's the other thing, right?
- 53:12Speaker 3: Because I think the best coaches are defensive. And I
- 53:14Speaker 3: don't think they're going to replace them with a defensive guy.
- 53:16Speaker 2: I could be wrong. Offensive. I mean, there's a lot
- 53:20Speaker 2: of heat around Brian Dable coming back.
- 53:22Speaker 4: Yeah, that's insane to me.
- 53:26Speaker 3: Or Joe Brady being, first of all, the Brian Dable
- 53:28Speaker 3: thing just feels like a pure nostalgia play. Like, oh,
- 53:30Speaker 3: I remember when we were on the rise.
- 53:32Speaker 2: And we were fun.
- 53:33Speaker 4: Okay.
- 53:35Speaker 3: I remember when you guys got, you know, like, whatever, anyways.
- 53:39Speaker 3: But there's not good offensive options out there.
- 53:43Speaker 1: I mean, I will make this point, and I was
- 53:45Speaker 1: thinking about this when we talk about, like, Allen being
- 53:48Speaker 1: rated higher than Lamar when they do these polls or whatever.
- 53:51Speaker 1: I would love to see those broken down by offensive
- 53:54Speaker 1: coaches and defensive coaches because I have always felt like
- 53:56Speaker 1: defensive coaches, look at them quarterbacks, like that can move
- 53:59Speaker 1: as a much more terrifying situation because you have to
- 54:02Speaker 1: think about more things. You know, Allen is a hybrid
- 54:05Speaker 1: of sorts in this discussion. But I always think the
- 54:08Speaker 1: defensive guys are the ones that are like, no, no, no,
- 54:11Speaker 1: I can work with something there. Or you hire a
- 54:13Speaker 1: defensive guy and you can wind up with something like
- 54:15Speaker 1: Tony Dungy where you make your offensive coordinator like the
- 54:17Speaker 1: head coach of offense.
- 54:19Speaker 4: And then he can just.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Worry about, let him worry about how to hold this
- 54:22Speaker 1: lead that our quarterback winds up getting.
- 54:24Speaker 4: I mean, they just had nine years of McDermott.
- 54:26Speaker 1: So if you go back to a defensive guy, I
- 54:28Speaker 1: don't feel like you're in a bad case if you
- 54:30Speaker 1: can go find who the right young offensive guy is.
- 54:33Speaker 2: You know what's so interesting?
- 54:34Speaker 3: Because you're absolutely right about that distinction. When I talk
- 54:36Speaker 3: to defensive coaches, they really hate mobile quarterbacks. But then
- 54:40Speaker 3: when I talk to defensive players, they really hate pocket passers.
- 54:44Speaker 3: I find that so interesting. It might be more of
- 54:47Speaker 3: like a like, the defensive coordinator is like, I can.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Plan for this. I can't plan for that.
- 54:52Speaker 3: Whereas the players like the perfect pass is just going
- 54:54Speaker 3: to kill, you know, but I always found that really interesting.
- 54:57Speaker 3: It was why like when Harbaugh lost his job, I
- 55:01Speaker 3: mentioned Flores because Flores had the Brian Flores in Minnesota
- 55:06Speaker 3: had all those quotes talking about how like unbelievable Lamar
- 55:08Speaker 3: Jackson was, but he's obviously not alone in that sentiment.
- 55:12Speaker 4: By the way, I just like to make it clear
- 55:13Speaker 4: to everybody.
- 55:14Speaker 1: The league is telling us this year, that Brian Flores
- 55:16Speaker 1: is going to be the head coach of the defense
- 55:18Speaker 1: for the rest of his career in the NFL.
- 55:21Speaker 2: They gave him an attention, right?
- 55:23Speaker 4: They did.
- 55:23Speaker 2: I saw that.
- 55:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:24Speaker 4: They did. You know what he's going to be?
- 55:26Speaker 1: He's going to be a Rooney Rule all-star. He's going
- 55:28Speaker 1: to get all these frequent flyer miles jumping on planes
- 55:31Speaker 1: for in-person interviews so they could do this. Can I
- 55:35Speaker 1: say something on that right fast? Because I normally do
- 55:37Speaker 1: a long Rooney Rule thing, but I haven't done it,
- 55:39Speaker 1: so I'm going to do this with you here. Just
- 55:40Speaker 1: something to bring up. And I saw somebody, I think
- 55:43Speaker 1: it was Albert Breer, and I don't want to I
- 55:45Speaker 1: probably shouldn't even say that because I don't want to
- 55:47Speaker 1: single him out because it's unfair because he's not the
- 55:49Speaker 1: only person who does this. But when people report that
- 55:52Speaker 1: a team has interviewed the two guys and then they
- 55:57Speaker 1: say they have satisfied the requirement and now they are
- 55:59Speaker 1: free to interview who they so choose, you're doing a
- 56:02Speaker 1: disservice to the whole process when you do that because
- 56:05Speaker 1: what you're saying is you're treating interviewing black candidates simply
- 56:09Speaker 1: as an obligation and not even entertaining the possibility that
- 56:12Speaker 1: maybe just maybe these are qualified people, right? Or maybe
- 56:14Speaker 1: just maybe this is what a team actually wants to do. Now,
- 56:17Speaker 1: do the teams deserve the benefit of the doubt?
- 56:19Speaker 4: Not necessarily.
- 56:21Speaker 1: But, like, continuing to say it as though this is
- 56:23Speaker 1: just some nuisance that you got to deal with before
- 56:25Speaker 1: you actually start looking for a coach, that's bad business
- 56:28Speaker 1: for everybody.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I.
- 56:31Speaker 3: I've been so like beaten down on this topic, right? Like,
- 56:34Speaker 3: I feel like I used to, I used to be
- 56:37Speaker 3: more like pointing out the obvious, you know, like when
- 56:42Speaker 3: teams are skirting it and whatnot.
- 56:43Speaker 2: I think the rule itself just appears to be so
- 56:49Speaker 2: fundamentally broken now in terms, and also the way it's
- 56:51Speaker 2: reported and discussed that it's like, I can't even like, I, right. Like,
- 56:56Speaker 2: What am I going to say? Well, they skirted it.
- 56:58Speaker 3: Well, if they were never going to hire him in
- 56:59Speaker 3: the first place, am I really going to be outraged
- 57:01Speaker 3: that they didn't do the interviews and such? It feels
- 57:07Speaker 3: like it's not doing its job anymore, but I don't.
- 57:11Speaker 4: Think people are.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Yeah, my thing is the rule isn't the problem. The
- 57:14Speaker 1: problem is these people. And we need to keep staying
- 57:18Speaker 1: on the necks of these people. They're the ones that's coming.
- 57:22Speaker 1: If the people weren't a problem, we wouldn't have no rule.
- 57:24Speaker 1: You get rid of the rule, we still going to
- 57:26Speaker 1: have the same people be the same problem. And look,
- 57:29Speaker 1: who knows? All this forcing you to interview these people
- 57:33Speaker 1: and maybe just maybe you might find a good coach.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Nobody wins more from the Rooney Rule than the teams.
- 57:40Speaker 2: I think each owner should do pressers more, though, because
- 57:43Speaker 2: it's good for the public to see what we're dealing with.
- 57:46Speaker 4: Yeah, man.
- 57:47Speaker 1: But hey, we got Mina Combs here. Check her out
- 57:50Speaker 1: on the Mina Combs show with Lenny and all over
- 57:53Speaker 1: various ESPN properties.
- 57:55Speaker 4: I appreciate you, ma'am.
- 57:57Speaker 3: It's good to see you, bud. Sorry I won't see
- 57:58Speaker 3: you in San Francisco.
- 58:00Speaker 4: Likewise.
- 58:01Speaker 1: Next time you get around here, I talk about this
- 58:03Speaker 1: with Dominique, the problem with living in New York is
- 58:05Speaker 1: everybody got like a 20-person list.
- 58:07Speaker 4: In New York.
- 58:07Speaker 1: You get your one a year when somebody comes to
- 58:10Speaker 1: New York all the time.
- 58:13Speaker 5: All right, Bo, three quick questions sponsored by FanDuel. We
- 58:16Speaker 5: got three massive NBA games this weekend. New York Knicks
- 58:20Speaker 5: taking on the Philadelphia 76ers. Knicks have been in free-for-all recently,
- 58:24Speaker 5: losing 11 of their last 14 games. What do you
- 58:27Speaker 5: make of what's going on with the Knicks?
- 58:29Speaker 1: I think the most interesting thing with the Knicks is
- 58:31Speaker 1: now we're getting the reports of, I don't know my role.
- 58:34Speaker 4: I don't know if I like playing for Mike Brown.
- 58:36Speaker 1: And all of us was out here campaigning for their
- 58:38Speaker 1: legs when they were playing with Tibbs, right? Like, no,
- 58:41Speaker 1: somebody needs to look out for you. And they were like,
- 58:43Speaker 1: I don't know. We kind of like playing a zillion minutes.
- 58:45Speaker 1: And now this has happened. Bottom line is what is
- 58:48Speaker 1: happening with them. And I don't know if it's fair
- 58:51Speaker 1: to the protagonist in the point I'm about to make,
- 58:53Speaker 1: but I told y'all that eventually y'all was going to
- 58:55Speaker 1: get tired of the Carl Towns experience. And he is
- 58:57Speaker 1: wildly talented. And you soak that up in the first
- 59:00Speaker 1: year and then everything you don't like about him, you
- 59:02Speaker 1: notice that in the second year. And that seems to
- 59:04Speaker 1: be what's happening here. I also think that even with
- 59:07Speaker 1: that free fall, they can still win the East when
- 59:10Speaker 1: it's all said and done.
- 59:12Speaker 5: Right. I mean, the ultimate listen to me now, believe
- 59:15Speaker 5: me later on is the Carl Anthony Townsend.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:18Speaker 4: Yeah. And I know how it went.
- 59:19Speaker 1: But I mean, I think what really makes it bad
- 59:21Speaker 1: for the Knicks this year is the fact that the
- 59:23Speaker 1: Celtics don't have Jason Tatum and somehow are still second
- 59:26Speaker 1: in the East.
- 59:26Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 59:27Speaker 1: Like you looked around and you said to yourself, if
- 59:29Speaker 1: you're the Knicks, there's nothing to stop us this year.
- 59:31Speaker 1: And the Celtics are like, y'all still ain't even better
- 59:33Speaker 1: than us. Right.
- 59:34Speaker 5: All right. After that, we got Golden State taking on Minnesota. Obviously,
- 59:39Speaker 5: Jimmy Butler went down earlier this week with a torn ACL.
- 59:41Speaker 5: He's going to miss the rest of the season. What
- 59:43Speaker 5: should the Warriors do with another season looks like in
- 59:47Speaker 5: the tubes?
- 59:48Speaker 1: I mean, it looks like their plan is to keep
- 59:50Speaker 1: Jimmy and hope that he comes off the injury next
- 59:53Speaker 1: year around this time and gives them a jolt similar
- 59:57Speaker 1: to the jolt that they got when they traded for
- 59:59Speaker 1: Jimmy right at the trade deadline. That seems to be
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: an ambitious ask of a guy his age coming off
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: an injury like this and somebody who's been physically slowing down. But, Ryan,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: I don't know if you've seen this, man. They are
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: so much better when he's on the court than without. Like,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I think he has their best on-off plus-minus numbers on
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: the whole roster. Like, he is the great player that people,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: for some reason, don't want to truly acknowledge his greatness
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: and the impact that he has on the roster that
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: he's been on. But if that's the plan, then I
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: don't know what they're supposed to do other than just
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: try to have a good time this year. Right.
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: I mean, Steph is still performing at a high level,
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: even at his advanced age. but I mean, it's, it's
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: almost turning into like Kobe's last few seasons, the Lakers. Yeah.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: Well, well, nothing will be that bad because you've heard
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: of these other guys that are on this team and
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: he's got so much more left than, uh, than Kobe
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: does at this point. But this, it's been a really
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: interesting four years since that last championship and that championship
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: they won was kind of a, somebody has to win
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: it this year.
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Um, we're learning a lot about Steph Curry and his
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: capacity for loyalty. Cause just about everybody else would ask
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: to bail on this. And I, by the way, I
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: think him not bailing is the right decision.
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: But I think most people would have bailed.
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: For sure. And finally, the Lakers are taking on the Mavericks.
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: Lakers have been up and down over the last month.
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: Ron starting to run in the form. Do you believe
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: in the Lakers and the reason and their championship aspirations?
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Oh, no, absolutely not. Your three best players can't guard anybody.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Their record is 26 and 16. They are fifth in
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: the West and their point differential is negative, which is
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: to say they have given up more points than they
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: have scored. They, I mean, their record is not in
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: line with what the actual point results have been.
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: I believe that this is going to go down.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: And then from there, how well JJ Redick holds it
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: together for this team and how well he holds it
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: together for JJ Redick.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: Like this is going to be a lot, man.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Like they've, I've never seen a team that was expected
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: to be any good who gets a less defense from
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: the centerpieces of the roster.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: Never seen anything like, right.
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: Yeah. I mean, we have another trade down only coming
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: in less than two weeks, which we're about due for
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: a passive aggressive LeBron texture, you know, tweet about that time.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Hey, look, man, I'll take that over his air sniper
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: shoes that I can't believe he thought that was a
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: good idea.
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: I can't believe it. We'll talk to you guys in
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: a couple of days. Take it easy.
