- 0:05Speaker 1: The Galaxy's most unpredictable Star Trek podcast.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Your This is Trek Cast, the Galaxy's most unpredictable Star
- 0:28Speaker 2: Trek podcast. Today, on the show, we're gonna be talking
- 0:32Speaker 2: about star Fleet Academy Season one, Episode three, Fightus Reflux.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I know it gave some of us some some kind
- 0:39Speaker 2: of reflux. Plus, we've uh, we've got Star Trek News
- 0:43Speaker 2: your listener feedback. I'm Scott Boucher's with Dan Lombardo and
- 0:48Speaker 2: now the referee for today's Battle of the Wits.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Dad, you'll raise Battle of the Wits referee.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah. I figured it's gonna be the the people who
- 1:01Speaker 2: hate Starfleet Academy and the people don't hate Starfleet Academy.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Yeah, potentially, I guess we'll see.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I think i'd rather talk about the Man trailer.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I think i'd rather Yeah, Daniel, depending on how
- 1:17Speaker 2: people can see the show, you might want to put
- 1:20Speaker 2: you in between me and Dan.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, no, I think we'll be fine. Y.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he's several hundred miles away.
- 1:30Speaker 3: There you go for now?
- 1:31Speaker 2: For now. Yeah, it's it's too snowy in our parts
- 1:37Speaker 2: of the world.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Yeah, but I've warmed I've warmed up the truck. It's okay,
- 1:41Speaker 4: running out the driver right now. The windshill wipers are up, you.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Know, right away from the wind show.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah, for our southern listeners, we get we get iced
- 1:50Speaker 2: up windshell wipers. Yeah.
- 1:51Speaker 3: So oh yeah, that's the thing.
- 1:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:53Speaker 2: They just freeze in place. Yeah, and then you try
- 1:56Speaker 2: to pick at them with your snow.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Yeah, you root them.
- 2:00Speaker 2: We got through a lot of white in the northeast.
- 2:03Speaker 5: Yep.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, potholes.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Weather in your neck of the wood, guys.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Oh it's fine here. I mean it's just really cold,
- 2:15Speaker 3: but there's no snow.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Oh it's it's snowing like crazy. We're supposed to get
- 2:19Speaker 4: about two feet. I haven't. So here's the thing. I
- 2:23Speaker 4: have a snowblower. It's been in the shed for the
- 2:26Speaker 4: last three years. I haven't used it for the last
- 2:29Speaker 4: three years because you know, it's shoveling snow is a
- 2:32Speaker 4: pretty good workout, and you know, I look at myself
- 2:36Speaker 4: and I'm like, no, no, you need the exercise. Go
- 2:39Speaker 4: go shovel the snow. So the last few years I
- 2:41Speaker 4: haven't used it. But we also haven't gotten a crazy
- 2:44Speaker 4: blizzard in a couple of years. I looked at the
- 2:46Speaker 4: I looked at the forecast and I was like, yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 4: I'm going out to the shed. I pulled it out yesterday,
- 2:53Speaker 4: and it's a good thing. I pulled it out yesterday
- 2:55Speaker 4: because uh both tires were flat and needed some starting
- 3:00Speaker 4: fluid to get it going. It was. It was an ordeal.
- 3:04Speaker 4: I would rather. I'm glad I did it yesterday instead
- 3:07Speaker 4: of uh later today while the snow is falling on
- 3:11Speaker 4: top of me.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Right. So, I've got a sinker stage snow thrower, which
- 3:15Speaker 2: is a workout in and of itself because you're basically,
- 3:18Speaker 2: instead of like pushing around a three pound shovel, pushing
- 3:22Speaker 2: around a forty five pound snowblower. Oh geez. And I
- 3:28Speaker 2: started up at the beginning of the season and it
- 3:30Speaker 2: ran for half of a driveway and then oh wow.
- 3:34Speaker 2: So I called my neighbor up. I'm like, hey, who
- 3:36Speaker 2: does who plows your driveway? And he's like, well, I
- 3:38Speaker 2: I plow it myself with with my He's got a
- 3:41Speaker 2: giant of like the biggest John Deere uh like tractor
- 3:45Speaker 2: you can, like the biggest John Deere lawnmower you can
- 3:48Speaker 2: get before it becomes like a farmer's tractor.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Yeah, before you need a CDL.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Right, yeah, and he's got a blade on the front
- 3:54Speaker 2: of it. And I'm like, oh wow, so let's work
- 3:57Speaker 2: something out. How about I throw you like a twenty
- 3:59Speaker 2: every time if you come over every time and just
- 4:02Speaker 2: you know, scoop me out. And he's like done deal,
- 4:05Speaker 2: And I'm like, you know, I paid him like three
- 4:07Speaker 2: or four times now, and it's money well spend. I
- 4:12Speaker 2: just I just look out the window, sipping on my coffee.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Go man, it looks really cold out there.
- 4:17Speaker 3: When I worked in TV news, I had a weather
- 4:22Speaker 3: meteorologist and she would say that the weather reports were
- 4:26Speaker 3: very similar to dating in that you would be promised
- 4:29Speaker 3: to foot overnight and really do you only get a
- 4:31Speaker 3: couple of inches.
- 4:35Speaker 2: A little early the show, Daniel, You're welcome, Okay, Hey,
- 4:40Speaker 2: wait till we're twenty minutes day before we go back.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I know, but I just you're talking about it. I
- 4:44Speaker 3: had to go.
- 4:45Speaker 2: But hey, you're the boss, so I'm not a.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Wolves, says good morning from hath New York.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Yeah exactly, It's okay.
- 4:56Speaker 2: We're gonna prove that you are the boss. Dan, kick
- 4:58Speaker 2: me off the show?
- 5:00Speaker 4: Mm hmmm, you want me to kick you off the show? Yeah, right, now,
- 5:04Speaker 4: all right, get off the show.
- 5:06Speaker 3: There he goes. It worked. See, don't know what you're
- 5:15Speaker 3: talking about.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Well, when you go to the when you go to
- 5:19Speaker 4: the treck cast chart I started. I started a day
- 5:22Speaker 4: before him.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, yeah, I I posted the Facebook message, Hey,
- 5:32Speaker 6: anyone want to revive this podcast?
- 5:34Speaker 4: So, you know, technically I'm senior to him, but that's right.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Technically yes, But should we start with the news because
- 5:45Speaker 3: I imagine we have much to discuss?
- 5:47Speaker 2: Sure, all right, let's do it.
- 5:54Speaker 3: All right, So our first news story comes to us
- 5:57Speaker 3: from Red Shirts Always Die. We had this posting earlier
- 6:02Speaker 3: this week in the Facebook group, but we're finding out
- 6:06Speaker 3: a little bit more. I don't know if you guys saw,
- 6:07Speaker 3: but earlier this week, William Shatner was caught eating cereal
- 6:13Speaker 3: in his car, right. I don't know if you saw that,
- 6:18Speaker 3: but it ends up this is all part of what's
- 6:21Speaker 3: going to be a Super Bowl ad. So so in
- 6:27Speaker 3: the future, in a few weeks, you will get to
- 6:29Speaker 3: see Grandpa William Shatner in a Kellogg's Raisin brand Super
- 6:34Speaker 3: Bowl commercial. So that's what that's about. And I just
- 6:37Speaker 3: thought that was you.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Know, I'm more interested in the Bowl that the Cereal
- 6:41Speaker 4: was in than the Super Bowl itself.
- 6:43Speaker 2: So I saw it. I saw, you know, I said,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I even saw him do like a little post he
- 6:49Speaker 2: talked about. He's like, yeah, you know, I'm post yeah,
- 6:56Speaker 2: post Cereal.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Right right right, hey, right, yeah, he's like ninety five.
- 7:01Speaker 3: He needs his he needs his brand or his fibers.
- 7:04Speaker 3: It makes sense. So there you go. Also, coming to
- 7:08Speaker 3: us another news story come to us from Variety, and
- 7:13Speaker 3: I don't know if you guys know, but Sundance is
- 7:15Speaker 3: currently happening. It's the big independent film festival. And at
- 7:20Speaker 3: Sundance is Chris Pine and they interviewed him Captain Kirk,
- 7:26Speaker 3: you know another Kirk I guess we're talking about. And
- 7:28Speaker 3: they asked him about, you know, hey, what do you
- 7:30Speaker 3: expect for the future of starting any advice and he says, yeah,
- 7:35Speaker 3: that they have fun with it. He says, any advice, Yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 3: have fun, good luck, live long, and prosper So because
- 7:43Speaker 3: he's basically done right, they're.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Not going to do anyway, don't talk about it anymore.
- 7:48Speaker 3: That's his kind way of saying, well.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Well, you know, there's there's also at this point, if
- 7:56Speaker 4: he talks about, yeah, I'd like to do another. He
- 7:58Speaker 4: kind of looks desperate, right, right, So there comes a
- 8:02Speaker 4: point where he's just got to stop talking about it,
- 8:06Speaker 4: and I think I think you probably hit that point,
- 8:08Speaker 4: or he realized he hit that point, or maybe publicist
- 8:10Speaker 4: is publicist said, hey, it's not happening, stop talking about
- 8:13Speaker 4: Star Trek.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Well you'll you'll know it's over for him when he
- 8:18Speaker 3: starts going to the conventions, when he's like like regularly,
- 8:27Speaker 3: you know, yeah, that that'll be when it's done. Yeah, yeah, wow.
- 8:35Speaker 2: You okay, yeah, because I'm looking at you. No, you're right,
- 8:40Speaker 2: because the the news. You know, I went, I went
- 8:42Speaker 2: to the Star Trek convention in November, and it's like, yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 2: you're right. Because the new school people are doing it
- 8:47Speaker 2: because they're promoting their stuff, and the old school people
- 8:50Speaker 2: are doing it. I don't know if it's because they
- 8:52Speaker 2: need the money or if it's just because they're bored.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Maybe it's a little both. I mean, does Brent Spiner
- 8:58Speaker 2: need my sixty bucks? I don't know. Maybe, But he
- 9:02Speaker 2: also I think has a good time doing it.
- 9:04Speaker 4: It seems like he has a good time doing it.
- 9:07Speaker 4: I think he gets a free weekend in Las Vegas
- 9:11Speaker 4: when he does it. I think he gets the admiration
- 9:15Speaker 4: of thousands of people in the same room. You will never, ever, ever,
- 9:22Speaker 4: ever see Zoey's Aldana at a Star Trek convention. No, right,
- 9:28Speaker 4: it's just not gonna happen. It's not it's not gonna happen.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Between her time in Star Trek, her time in Marvel,
- 9:36Speaker 4: her time in Avatar, she's got more money and more
- 9:39Speaker 4: clout than God.
- 9:42Speaker 3: And the mobile commercials.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Yeah, and the T mobile exactly, T Mobile.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Yeah, she's never kidding me. No, I mean she might
- 9:53Speaker 3: pop up at like one or two maybe maybe like
- 9:56Speaker 3: and I'm talking twenty years from now.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't. I don't know.
- 10:01Speaker 2: But even then, like a friend will have to talk
- 10:04Speaker 2: her into it, right, all right, inter Urban will have
- 10:06Speaker 2: to be like retired, and it'll be.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Like, well, it's twenty minutes, so I guess I'll go.
- 10:11Speaker 4: So to put it in perspective, when do we know
- 10:15Speaker 4: when Ricardo Montalban passed? When did he pass away?
- 10:19Speaker 3: Oh?
- 10:19Speaker 4: I don't know off the top, because I don't think
- 10:25Speaker 4: he ever did conventions.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Ricardo Montaban.
- 10:33Speaker 3: The way January fourteen, two thousand and nine, okay, fifteen years.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Okay, but from nineteen sixty whatever to two thousand and nine.
- 10:43Speaker 4: He could have appeared at any convention he wanted to,
- 10:46Speaker 4: and I don't recall him ever doing it.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I don't think he ever showed up the Star Trek experience.
- 10:52Speaker 3: No, So yeah, you're right right, Although all.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Right, William Shattner was there in November. It's not like
- 11:03Speaker 2: he needs the money. But he's also probably a big
- 11:07Speaker 2: ego attention whore.
- 11:08Speaker 3: He probably likes the animation.
- 11:10Speaker 4: He does that, and I think he commands the highest
- 11:15Speaker 4: paycheck even to this day. Yeah, to appear at one
- 11:19Speaker 4: of those things.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I mean as quickly as that line was going through
- 11:23Speaker 2: and as as as as much as going through that
- 11:26Speaker 2: line quickly, yeah, and as long as that line was. Yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 2: even if you're worth a lot of money, that'd be
- 11:34Speaker 2: worth your time.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. All right, And our last news story
- 11:38Speaker 3: comes to us from uh what is this trekmovie dot com?
- 11:43Speaker 3: And uh, I know you guys can't get enough of
- 11:45Speaker 3: Starfleet Academy and a new comic book will be launching
- 11:48Speaker 3: in April. So this will be a Starfleet Academy comic book.
- 11:52Speaker 3: It will be a five issue mini series called Starfleet
- 11:56Speaker 3: Academy Lost Contact. So for those of you who cannot
- 12:01Speaker 3: wait there will be more say yeah, so I imagine
- 12:08Speaker 3: we'll get all of these review them, right, is that
- 12:10Speaker 3: what we want to do?
- 12:12Speaker 2: Well? In the picture you're showing, they're showing the cadets
- 12:15Speaker 2: in an EVAC suit. Right, So I'm curious what what
- 12:22Speaker 2: eight years in EVAC technology is done?
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I doubt they go that deep into it.
- 12:29Speaker 2: But you know, I mean, can we can we turn
- 12:32Speaker 2: our heads yet? Or no? You know, have they have
- 12:35Speaker 2: they taken out of the dark Knight and let them
- 12:39Speaker 2: turn their heads? Or are we still I mean using
- 12:42Speaker 2: rubber seals? What's what's the deal.
- 12:44Speaker 3: They had to in what episode one? They had to
- 12:47Speaker 3: put on the suits? Right, that's what was part of
- 12:50Speaker 3: the deal. It's not like they went through the makeover
- 12:52Speaker 3: Machine and just add an ev suit on.
- 12:55Speaker 4: The makeover machine. I wonder if we're ever going to
- 12:57Speaker 4: see the Makeover Machine again.
- 12:59Speaker 3: I hope so. Oh man.
- 13:00Speaker 2: You know, the programmable matter is the would make you
- 13:03Speaker 2: know how like in Hollywood now anytime like a Marvel
- 13:07Speaker 2: superhero needs to don a suit.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Yeah, they call it a nanotech and it just pops.
- 13:10Speaker 2: A nanotech you know, And yeah, what the programmable matter
- 13:14Speaker 2: actually makes that sort of feasible.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they could absolutely do that.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I would believe, like, oh, programmable matter, it's already established.
- 13:23Speaker 2: They could just you know.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Yeah, their uniforms are programmable matter. It becomes whatever it
- 13:26Speaker 3: needs it to be.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I could dig that.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I would too. At least that gives you.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Every single cadet doesn't have a Mark forty seven Iron
- 13:36Speaker 2: Man suit.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Perfect, no notes, let's do that. So yeah, in April
- 13:42Speaker 3: there's the comic books get Ready, and that's all the
- 13:47Speaker 3: news stories.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Cool, all right, Yeah, see guys next week. Yeah, thanks
- 13:52Speaker 4: for stuff by.
- 13:55Speaker 3: You don't want to talk about the episode, I don't.
- 13:57Speaker 4: I really don't. I'm yeah, I don't.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I hear you. Anyways, fun will now comc Yeah, I have.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Things to say saying that, Well, we'll talk about the episode.
- 14:17Speaker 2: The episode, basically, if we wanted to break it down,
- 14:19Speaker 2: was basically, there's a rivalry between Starfleet and the Starfleet
- 14:23Speaker 2: Academy and the War College cadets. So this is this.
- 14:28Speaker 2: There were no surprises in this episode. This This episode
- 14:32Speaker 2: was sort of a bottle episode.
- 14:34Speaker 3: This is a high school rivalry episode.
- 14:36Speaker 2: This is a high school rivalry episode, and it didn't
- 14:40Speaker 2: take any twists or turns. It was all you know,
- 14:44Speaker 2: varsa letter jackets and a competition and rivalries and sexual
- 14:48Speaker 2: pranks and yeah, pranks and pranks and pranks, and administrators
- 14:54Speaker 2: and teachers at odds with how to handle it and
- 14:57Speaker 2: trying to coach the kids. And it was it was
- 14:59Speaker 2: a five out of ten. It was fine. I didn't
- 15:01Speaker 2: hate it. I didn't love it, and that's what it was,
- 15:05Speaker 2: and I think that's what it sort of set out
- 15:08Speaker 2: to be. Yeah, it was trying to manage expectations for
- 15:12Speaker 2: the rest of the Yeah.
- 15:15Speaker 3: I mean, I imagine if you're guys of watching this episode,
- 15:18Speaker 3: you've seen the latest episode of Starfleet Academy. But basically,
- 15:22Speaker 3: to recap, what it is is the War College Pranks
- 15:27Speaker 3: Starfleet Academy, and so the two different teams, class schools, whatever,
- 15:33Speaker 3: decide that they're gonna play this game. I forget what
- 15:36Speaker 3: they called the game, but it's basically Captured the Flag
- 15:39Speaker 3: where you have to your two teams, you have to
- 15:43Speaker 3: shoot each other. If you shoot them, they get hit
- 15:47Speaker 3: with like a mini transporter, are taken out of the
- 15:50Speaker 3: game until you hit their mascot and their their mascot
- 15:53Speaker 3: is basically the flag right, and if you hit the
- 15:56Speaker 3: mascot then then you win. So it you your team
- 16:00Speaker 3: protects your mascot, their team protects layers, and you try
- 16:03Speaker 3: to capture the other ones. So like we got the
- 16:07Speaker 3: was the war college the Mugatu? Yeah yeah, so that's
- 16:11Speaker 3: that's mirror dressed as the Mugatu.
- 16:13Speaker 2: That has been from an original series episode.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, yeah, so.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Which you know, I'll have to point out the character
- 16:24Speaker 4: Mugatu from Zoolander that yes, well Faral plays is based
- 16:30Speaker 4: on this this animal from Star Trek, the original series.
- 16:35Speaker 3: So yeah, because Ben Stiller loves character.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Yeah, gotcha.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Yeah, we get to we get to see an example
- 16:45Speaker 3: what gym class is like, which was a thing climbing
- 16:51Speaker 3: ropes and and running sprints.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Interesting to see that it looks like basketball has not changed.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Basketball has changed quite a bit in the last fifty
- 17:00Speaker 2: years here on Earth. Apparently it hasn't changed at all
- 17:03Speaker 2: in the last a thousand years or maybe yeah, okay,
- 17:09Speaker 2: maybe that's what Starfleet Academy is all about, because they do.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Maybe that's what they are. They're like ancient retro because
- 17:14Speaker 2: they're using a lot of retro language, ancient retro language. Ye,
- 17:20Speaker 2: so yeah, and how else are you gonna make a show.
- 17:24Speaker 2: It's not like we have crystal balls into the future.
- 17:26Speaker 2: So you know they're gonna get If you're gonna get it,
- 17:29Speaker 2: you're either gonna get it super wrong or you're just
- 17:32Speaker 2: gonna go with what you know today.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Well, they got it super wrong because there's a whole
- 17:38Speaker 4: thread during Deep Space nine about how nobody plays baseball anymore.
- 17:43Speaker 4: And now the last baseball game was played one hundred
- 17:45Speaker 4: years ago and this was the date, and YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 17:49Speaker 4: You know, so, uh, baseball died out, but basketball is
- 17:54Speaker 4: still around. Basketball came, but it's never but it's never been,
- 17:58Speaker 4: but it's never been mentioned in sixty years of starting.
- 18:02Speaker 2: That leads me to something else. I'd like to come
- 18:04Speaker 2: to the defense for the first time of the producers
- 18:08Speaker 2: deciding to have this take place in the thirty first century. Ok,
- 18:14Speaker 2: I get it now, I get it now. There's a
- 18:16Speaker 2: conflict there that can't be in the in the sort
- 18:20Speaker 2: of the Picard era with the post bird. I understand
- 18:23Speaker 2: now why they chose to bring it here, because there's
- 18:30Speaker 2: an inherent from a storytelling point of view, there's an
- 18:32Speaker 2: inherent conflict. There's an inherent sort of something you have
- 18:37Speaker 2: to overcome. When it comes to like starting up an
- 18:40Speaker 2: academy from a new you know, there's gonna be there's
- 18:43Speaker 2: gonna be growing pains that they get to tell stories
- 18:46Speaker 2: about right that they wouldn't have been able to do
- 18:49Speaker 2: in the in the twenty fifth century or twenty sixth
- 18:53Speaker 2: and whatever. So that part I'm sort of starting to understand.
- 18:57Speaker 2: I mean, I understand what a lot of people don't
- 18:59Speaker 2: like that and they want to see or Bacardira stuff,
- 19:01Speaker 2: But from a storytelling point of view, I get it.
- 19:04Speaker 4: So yeah, except that you have sixty years of us
- 19:08Speaker 4: watching this show and knowing that Starfleet Academy is a
- 19:12Speaker 4: thing and only seeing glimpses of it and wanting to
- 19:16Speaker 4: see more of it, and then they say, Okay, we're
- 19:19Speaker 4: going to show you more of it, but not the
- 19:21Speaker 4: one you want to see. We're going to show it
- 19:23Speaker 4: to you hundreds of years in the future, when it's
- 19:26Speaker 4: been discontinued for one hundred years and they're starting it
- 19:30Speaker 4: from brand new. That's yeah, that's that's not what It's
- 19:36Speaker 4: not what people ask for.
- 19:38Speaker 2: That's I know.
- 19:40Speaker 3: I mean, you could argue it would have been interesting
- 19:42Speaker 3: to do the last class too, like did they know
- 19:45Speaker 3: they were going to close it down the next year?
- 19:47Speaker 3: Did did you just shut down out of out of
- 19:49Speaker 3: the emergency?
- 19:51Speaker 4: You know, there's so many there's so many unanswered questions.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Excuse me. You know, I mentioned it last week when
- 19:59Speaker 4: I I hadn't seen the last few minutes of episode two,
- 20:03Speaker 4: when I was asking like, what is the War College?
- 20:06Speaker 4: Is this another group of cadets? Because you know, and
- 20:09Speaker 4: I talked about what what a war college is today,
- 20:13Speaker 4: and it's apparent that they just took the name war
- 20:16Speaker 4: college and and applied it to just another yeah, just
- 20:22Speaker 4: another another academy. So you know, I'm a little bit
- 20:25Speaker 4: miffed that they're they're misusing that phrase, Okay, but also
- 20:30Speaker 4: it opens up these questions like what what is the
- 20:33Speaker 4: War College? Why? Why did that persist and Starfleet Academy
- 20:39Speaker 4: did not? And you know they wear Starfleet Delta's okay,
- 20:43Speaker 4: so is that the Starfleet War College?
- 20:47Speaker 2: And it was so hold on.
- 20:48Speaker 4: A minute, let me, let me, let me, let me finish.
- 20:51Speaker 4: What was it three years ago? Was that the the
- 20:55Speaker 4: Earth Forces War College? Because three years ago Earth was
- 20:58Speaker 4: not part of the Federation. Did Earth have something else
- 21:03Speaker 4: that replaced Starfleet? When they left the the the Federation,
- 21:08Speaker 4: are they and now that they're back in the Federation,
- 21:12Speaker 4: did the Earth Forces rejoined. There's so many questions here
- 21:16Speaker 4: that they haven't answered that they're not confident they will.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think they will.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Oh, I'm not sure they will either. But I think
- 21:25Speaker 2: what happened after the burn is that the the Federation
- 21:28Speaker 2: was decimated. Starfleet was basically dissolved, but they still needed
- 21:33Speaker 2: a force, and they basically brought back a a war
- 21:40Speaker 2: type federation sort of academy, and they just renamed it
- 21:46Speaker 2: the War College where they refocus their efforts on just
- 21:49Speaker 2: producing people that can mann starships and build starships and
- 21:53Speaker 2: fight with starships. And they just called it the War College.
- 21:56Speaker 4: That's why star Okay, So let's let's okay. So Earth
- 22:00Speaker 4: leaves the Federation. Earth still needs a military, so they
- 22:06Speaker 4: established the Earth Defense Oh. I was just about to
- 22:08Speaker 4: say the Earth Defense Force. Somebody put it up in
- 22:10Speaker 4: the chat. Yeah, okay, so you have Earth Defense Force.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Earth rejoins the Federation. Why isn't the Earth Defense Force
- 22:20Speaker 4: folded back into Starfleet? Why are there two separate things here?
- 22:26Speaker 4: There's no explanation for it.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Mhmm. Hopefully they do explain it, but I don't think
- 22:31Speaker 3: they will. It's just it's just to be the rival school,
- 22:37Speaker 3: I think ultimately, which is dumb, Like they they could
- 22:41Speaker 3: do so much more with it. Like when I watched
- 22:46Speaker 3: this episode, I kept thinking, you had the opportunity to
- 22:50Speaker 3: do like different philosophies here at play, whereas maybe the
- 22:54Speaker 3: Starfleet Academy they teach you how to work as a crew,
- 22:58Speaker 3: how to work as a team, and the War College
- 23:01Speaker 3: is like we want we want soldiers, we want individuals
- 23:04Speaker 3: or or badass and tough. So like you could do
- 23:08Speaker 3: two different schools of thought here going right. So then
- 23:12Speaker 3: that way, when they compete against each other, it's both
- 23:15Speaker 3: philosophies at war with each other. And what's going to work.
- 23:18Speaker 2: I'll integrate them by the end of the show, because
- 23:20Speaker 2: right now, Starfleet's the experiment, the War College is the standard.
- 23:24Speaker 2: They're the establishment.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Jazzmis is right right now, it's Slytherin. So yeah, I
- 23:29Speaker 3: never watched those movies, so I don't really know either.
- 23:34Speaker 7: So I I I I see what they're trying to
- 23:39Speaker 7: do by And the reason why they haven't reintegrated Starfleet
- 23:44Speaker 7: yet is because you know, Starfleet's brand new.
- 23:46Speaker 2: You know they're not gonna just take.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Starfleet Starfleet stop. Starfleet brand is.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Brand new to everybody who's alive.
- 23:52Speaker 4: No, it's not. Starfleet never ceased being a thing. It
- 23:57Speaker 4: just was smaller. It was smaller, and it's didn't have
- 24:00Speaker 4: access to certain parts of the galaxy, and and Earth
- 24:04Speaker 4: wasn't a part of it.
- 24:05Speaker 2: But it was run by graduates of the War College,
- 24:08Speaker 2: not Starfleet Academy.
- 24:09Speaker 4: No, the War College is an Earth thing.
- 24:13Speaker 2: So okay, So if Starfleet Academy hasn't been up and
- 24:18Speaker 2: running in one hundred and twenty years, who's in Starfleet?
- 24:24Speaker 4: Those who completed those who completed Officer Candidacy School. I
- 24:28Speaker 4: guess there are more than one way. There's more than
- 24:30Speaker 4: one way to become an officer.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Kay, So Admiral Vans either went to OCS or he's
- 24:36Speaker 2: a graduate of the War College.
- 24:38Speaker 4: No, because the War College was on Earth and Earth
- 24:40Speaker 4: wasn't part of the Federation. Okay, this is what I'm
- 24:45Speaker 4: saying that the War College, from what I gather, the
- 24:49Speaker 4: War College has been on Earth this whole time. And
- 24:53Speaker 4: if they've been on Earth this whole time, well, Earth
- 24:55Speaker 4: was not part of the Federation, then it was not
- 24:59Speaker 4: the Starflee War College. It was the Earth Defense Force
- 25:04Speaker 4: War College or whatever Earth was calling its military for
- 25:06Speaker 4: the last one hundred and something years.
- 25:10Speaker 8: Mm hmm.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Who was the seed of the Federation while Earth was gone?
- 25:14Speaker 2: Do we know? We don't?
- 25:18Speaker 3: We don't, Ye don't, I don't.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, because now it's coming back to me the
- 25:23Speaker 2: last two or three seasons of Discovery, which I sort
- 25:28Speaker 2: of blocked out of my head, even though I've seen yep,
- 25:31Speaker 2: I've seen those seasons twice.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Me too, brother, me too.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Something you're not gonna agree on, Dad, it was bad.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I really try to like this show. I really am,
- 25:44Speaker 2: and I'm gonna give it. I'm really gonna try to
- 25:46Speaker 2: give it a fair shake. I try to watch it
- 25:49Speaker 2: for what it is, you know, a sort of a team.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, it's gonna say clearly it's a it's
- 25:53Speaker 3: it's a teen show. It's not for forty year old men.
- 25:57Speaker 3: That's very clearly what they're going for.
- 26:01Speaker 4: So I've been really careful about what I've said.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Oh, but the gloves are coming off now.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Ding ding ding.
- 26:17Speaker 4: You know, people throw the word woke around a lot,
- 26:22Speaker 4: and and it is this is the wocus thing. And
- 26:29Speaker 4: I bite my tongue so much because, as a heterosexual,
- 26:34Speaker 4: white male in twenty twenty six, their opinions that I'm
- 26:40Speaker 4: not allowed to have. If I have these opinions, I'm
- 26:45Speaker 4: immediately labeled a bigot. Okay, but they're doing things with
- 26:55Speaker 4: these shows, and they're doing it in the name of representation.
- 27:04Speaker 4: But at the same time, where are the positive representations
- 27:12Speaker 4: of white hetero males? Point them out to me on
- 27:16Speaker 4: this show?
- 27:17Speaker 2: Right here?
- 27:20Speaker 4: Where are they who are our positive white hetero males?
- 27:25Speaker 2: Is it?
- 27:26Speaker 4: This guy on the left who was who was captain
- 27:28Speaker 4: of the team for fifteen minutes. They initially introduced him
- 27:34Speaker 4: as rich white hetero douchebag, Jack douchebag, right, Okay, so okay,
- 27:43Speaker 4: where's our representation. Okay, he's you know, he's a white male. Yeah,
- 27:46Speaker 4: but he's a jack douchebag. Okay, so we're gonna we're
- 27:49Speaker 4: gonna shoehorn him into this this stereotype. Then you know,
- 27:57Speaker 4: the end of the second episode, you know, he's kind
- 28:00Speaker 4: of learning to be one of the team. Okay, maybe
- 28:03Speaker 4: this guy, maybe this guy's not so bad. They have
- 28:06Speaker 4: to immediately throw in there. They have to immediately drop
- 28:09Speaker 4: a hint so that you know, No, no, no, he's
- 28:12Speaker 4: not heterosexual. He's bisexual. Right, They just had to they
- 28:17Speaker 4: just had to work that in there. Okay, so he's
- 28:20Speaker 4: he's off the table. Who else do we got? I'm
- 28:23Speaker 4: asking you, guys, who where are white male? Where are
- 28:28Speaker 4: positive representations of white hetero males on this show?
- 28:34Speaker 8: Mhm?
- 28:35Speaker 4: There's one guy on the bridge, but we don't know
- 28:37Speaker 4: anything about him yet, right, Okay, he's andsn Nobody who
- 28:42Speaker 4: sits sits at a chair on the bridge, won't you.
- 28:45Speaker 3: They'll make a novel about him.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Yep. Okay, So I'm looking around, I'm looking around. I'm
- 28:49Speaker 4: looking around. Oh wait a minute, the chancellor of the
- 28:52Speaker 4: war College. Okay, there's a guy. We have to immediately
- 28:57Speaker 4: paint him though, as a weirdo who has some strange
- 29:02Speaker 4: tea fetish, and they make fun of him because of
- 29:04Speaker 4: how much he loves tea.
- 29:06Speaker 8: Mm hmm.
- 29:07Speaker 4: You know who else loved tea? Yes? Yeah, yes, So
- 29:16Speaker 4: not only are you are you taking a ship on
- 29:18Speaker 4: the segment of the population that has been the backbone
- 29:23Speaker 4: of this franchise for sixty years, but now you're also
- 29:26Speaker 4: taking a ship on the specific characters, specific beloved characters
- 29:32Speaker 4: why why? What did that te thing? How did that
- 29:37Speaker 4: progress the story at all?
- 29:41Speaker 3: It didn't, it was it.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Didn't, It didn't. It's just, hey, let's let's make fun
- 29:45Speaker 4: of this guy. He's an easy target.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think for me, my bigger criticism is
- 29:50Speaker 3: they shoehorn stuff in as opposed to organically making it
- 29:54Speaker 3: part of the story.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Yes, yes, and they do it to tick these boxes.
- 29:57Speaker 4: So I got you got the the Cadet Master. I
- 30:02Speaker 4: can't remember her name, Okay, so let's count how many
- 30:06Speaker 4: boxes she ticks. Well, first off, they're gonna, they're gonna,
- 30:10Speaker 4: they're gonna tick a box that she's the first female
- 30:14Speaker 4: Gemindar that we've ever seen. Okay, And and Gemindar not
- 30:20Speaker 4: what you what you think they are? Okay, so you
- 30:22Speaker 4: could probably maybe maybe check the transgender box there. Okay,
- 30:31Speaker 4: but she's only half gem Dar. She's uh, she's half Klingon. Okay,
- 30:36Speaker 4: So let's check another box. She's she's biracial, okay, first
- 30:41Speaker 4: of her kind in Starfleet and then three episodes in
- 30:46Speaker 4: We Just Have to Shoot. Oh yeah, she's also gay.
- 30:49Speaker 3: M hm.
- 30:51Speaker 4: How did that progress the story at all?
- 30:57Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 30:57Speaker 4: And currently in a thirty second century you you can't
- 31:04Speaker 4: shoot a NERF gun without hitting someone who has some
- 31:10Speaker 4: sort of alternate sexual something or other. Okay, that is
- 31:17Speaker 4: not they're over compensating. I know you want to I
- 31:24Speaker 4: know you want to represent I know it's about representation,
- 31:27Speaker 4: and I know these people are out there in the world. Okay,
- 31:30Speaker 4: but it's over representation just for the sake of doing it,
- 31:35Speaker 4: just for the sake of of checking boxes. And it's
- 31:39Speaker 4: getting old, it's getting tiring.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Yeah, let me add to that. And this is something,
- 31:48Speaker 2: this is the one point I wanted to make when
- 31:50Speaker 2: I was when I was getting ready and making notes
- 31:52Speaker 2: for the show. Everything you just said, Dan, for the
- 31:56Speaker 2: most part, I agree with. Yeah.
- 31:58Speaker 4: But I'm a big it's going to be in the face.
- 32:00Speaker 4: I'm big.
- 32:01Speaker 2: And to everybody, I want to I want to to
- 32:03Speaker 2: everybody who's listening to this, who's going you know and
- 32:05Speaker 2: blah blah blah blah blah, you're just a conservative blah
- 32:07Speaker 2: blah blah. No, it's not about that. You're right. You're
- 32:10Speaker 2: one hundred percent right. And everybody deserves a defense, everybody
- 32:17Speaker 2: deserves a voice, everybody deserves to be safe, and and
- 32:22Speaker 2: that includes minorities, majorities, and they're they are trying to
- 32:29Speaker 2: check too many boxes and they're trying to overcompensate. I
- 32:31Speaker 2: agree with you one hundred percent. I agree with you
- 32:33Speaker 2: with with gem Wharf. Theyre uh, they're checking way too
- 32:38Speaker 2: many boxes with her. So I agree with you on that.
- 32:41Speaker 2: And I'm not even gonna say but I I just
- 32:44Speaker 2: agree with you, Okay, I'm going to add something with
- 32:47Speaker 2: her character that I don't think that anybody's thinking about.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Maybe we are.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Oh I'm sorry, she's overweight too, body positivity check. Sorry,
- 32:56Speaker 4: I forgot that one. Continue now with that one.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Yes, she does look overweight. You can be a bigger
- 33:02Speaker 2: person and still be healthy. So I'll just throw that
- 33:07Speaker 2: out there. But yeah, for current for twenty twenty six
- 33:14Speaker 2: military standards, she wouldn't it. For a human, she wouldn't
- 33:19Speaker 2: make the cut. But that's neither here nor there. I
- 33:23Speaker 2: would like to point out one thing though, on top
- 33:25Speaker 2: of me a green with Dan on a lot of
- 33:27Speaker 2: those checking too many boxes, I'd like to point one
- 33:30Speaker 2: other thing out that the writers I think might be
- 33:34Speaker 2: making a point with Tataro's character. I think they're making
- 33:39Speaker 2: a big statement here. It has nothing to do with
- 33:44Speaker 2: LGBTQ at all. Tigni Carlo's character jet Reno, her ex
- 33:51Speaker 2: wife was killed? And how was she killed? Do I remember?
- 33:56Speaker 3: Oh, wasn't it on that planet?
- 33:58Speaker 2: She was killed during the Klingon war? Right? Okay, she
- 34:03Speaker 2: was killed by the Klingons.
- 34:06Speaker 4: M hm.
- 34:07Speaker 2: She is now dating a half right, Okay, so take
- 34:13Speaker 2: the LGBTQ stuff completely away from it. Okay, I think
- 34:18Speaker 2: they're made. They're making a separate statement about reconciliation and
- 34:23Speaker 2: forgiveness because she is dating half a member of a
- 34:28Speaker 2: species that killed her ex wife or killed her wife.
- 34:34Speaker 3: I I think that's that's a that's a line I
- 34:37Speaker 3: had not connected, but I think, yeah, no, for sure,
- 34:42Speaker 3: But I but I think you could have made that
- 34:45Speaker 3: more organically part of the story. And then revealed that
- 34:49Speaker 3: she is with the Cadet master and and showed like
- 34:53Speaker 3: later like in another story because it doesn't fit with
- 34:56Speaker 3: the school rivalry. But something along the lines is like, oh,
- 34:59Speaker 3: I don't like those people, you know, some sort of
- 35:02Speaker 3: bigoted storyline. And then Tick Guitaris says, yeah, I felt
- 35:05Speaker 3: the same way about Klingons. You know, they killed my
- 35:07Speaker 3: first wife. But now I'm with.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Her, right, right, and every reason to take.
- 35:13Speaker 3: Right, That's what I mean, Like you could, you could
- 35:16Speaker 3: more organically weave that into a story. You're still getting
- 35:19Speaker 3: the same result of representation that you want, but but
- 35:25Speaker 3: it comes from like a better, you know, more fulfilling
- 35:27Speaker 3: source in that way.
- 35:29Speaker 4: But why why does that scene take place in front
- 35:32Speaker 4: of students? Why are you revealing? Why are you revealing
- 35:37Speaker 4: your your your sexual preference and and who your lover is,
- 35:43Speaker 4: whether you're hetero, whether you're you know whatever. Why are
- 35:47Speaker 4: you having that conversation in front of students? This is
- 35:51Speaker 4: this is a school, this is a workplace, this is
- 35:54Speaker 4: a military installation. Yeah, they they should not be having
- 35:58Speaker 4: that conversation in front of whether there's whether you want
- 36:02Speaker 4: to look at them as students, whether you want to
- 36:04Speaker 4: look at them as subordinate soldiers. You should not be
- 36:08Speaker 4: having that that conversation in front of them. And that
- 36:10Speaker 4: and once again, that's bad writing.
- 36:13Speaker 3: That's what it is. That's what it.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Boils down to hold hands in the cafeteria exactly.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Well, Bill, are you really doing it thinking that deep? Yeah,
- 36:21Speaker 3: that's because we want it to be good. That's that's
- 36:24Speaker 3: the problem.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Well, I I'm not smart enough to know what would
- 36:28Speaker 2: make a better storyline or anything. I'm just I'm like
- 36:32Speaker 2: a dog chasing cars. I was just impressed with myself
- 36:35Speaker 2: that I made the connection between you.
- 36:37Speaker 3: No, you made a great connection, and that's that Carlos character.
- 36:39Speaker 2: But yeah, I think that it's a thing that might
- 36:42Speaker 2: be brought up later on down the road.
- 36:45Speaker 3: So yeah, I I also feel like it was too
- 36:49Speaker 3: early for this school rivalry episode. We don't know enough
- 36:53Speaker 3: about the war colleges and be like, oh, you know,
- 36:55Speaker 3: screw those guys. We can't wait for the for the
- 36:57Speaker 3: Starfleet Academy to win.
- 36:59Speaker 4: Right.
- 36:59Speaker 3: Like, the closest other episode to something like this is
- 37:03Speaker 3: the baseball episode in DS nine.
- 37:06Speaker 4: So I'm sorry, go ahead, finish, finish your thought, and
- 37:10Speaker 4: then I'll tell you how they how they could have
- 37:12Speaker 4: fixed this whole war college thing. Okay, but go ahead.
- 37:15Speaker 3: But but like this episode, especially you know, us versus
- 37:18Speaker 3: them kind of thing that that should have been done
- 37:20Speaker 3: maybe either later in this season or maybe next season.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Right once we got to know the characters, we're more
- 37:26Speaker 3: apt to cheer them on. We we want to really,
- 37:29Speaker 3: you know, see them win. That that's kind of where
- 37:33Speaker 3: this takes place. It's a little bit awkward to put
- 37:36Speaker 3: it so early into a brand new show. I think.
- 37:41Speaker 4: So what they could have done. They could have established
- 37:46Speaker 4: that starf Starfleet Academy hasn't existed for one hundred years
- 37:52Speaker 4: in place in place of Starfleet Academy, the Earth Defense
- 37:59Speaker 4: Force established will call it, I think it's a terrible name,
- 38:03Speaker 4: but they call it the War College whatever. Earth Defense
- 38:06Speaker 4: Force established the War College on the site of the
- 38:10Speaker 4: old Starfleet Academy. Now that Earth has rejoined the Federation
- 38:16Speaker 4: and is restarting Starfleet, Starfleet Academy is going to reinhabit
- 38:23Speaker 4: the former site. Those War College students who have already
- 38:28Speaker 4: started will finish the War College alongside the new Starfleet
- 38:36Speaker 4: Academy recruits. But in four years when they age out,
- 38:39Speaker 4: the War College will be dissolved and they will completely
- 38:42Speaker 4: be folded into Starfleet. Okay, that's where the rivalry comes from.
- 38:48Speaker 4: You have these kids who worked their whole life to
- 38:52Speaker 4: get into the Earth Defense Force War College, and now
- 38:57Speaker 4: the day I graduate, it's not going to exist anymore,
- 38:59Speaker 4: and I'm gonna be folded into this other thing. That's bullshit.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Fuck these new guys who are coming in, We're gonna
- 39:05Speaker 4: do whatever we can to make sure that they fail.
- 39:08Speaker 4: That's leg like legitimate, that's great.
- 39:11Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, yes, that would be much better.
- 39:15Speaker 4: They didn't do that. They didn't explain any of that.
- 39:17Speaker 4: It's just, hey, I go to college, you go to college.
- 39:19Speaker 4: We go to college next to each other. We don't
- 39:20Speaker 4: like each other.
- 39:21Speaker 3: The other thing, are the colleges like in the same building?
- 39:25Speaker 4: Who knows? Right?
- 39:27Speaker 3: Like, it doesn't make any sense. Do they teleport over
- 39:30Speaker 3: from like another city?
- 39:31Speaker 4: Like?
- 39:31Speaker 3: I have no idea, it's hard to tell. I don't
- 39:36Speaker 3: get a scale of where they're at.
- 39:38Speaker 4: So it just bothers me when we watch these shows
- 39:42Speaker 4: and after about five minutes we could we can figure
- 39:44Speaker 4: out what would have been better, what would have made
- 39:48Speaker 4: this make sense? Yeah, and we do, and we do
- 39:51Speaker 4: this for free.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Yeah well hopefully Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:57Speaker 2: It just goes through my head over and over again.
- 39:59Speaker 2: You don't Alex Kurtzman. This is this is Alex Kurtzman's fault, right,
- 40:04Speaker 2: it's gotta be.
- 40:07Speaker 3: I mean he's the head of the tail. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 40:13Speaker 3: it's just like ah, man, I guess that's the frustrating
- 40:18Speaker 3: part too, is like we think about it for more
- 40:20Speaker 3: than five minutes and we come up with more and
- 40:23Speaker 3: it's like they just don't care. And they spend millions
- 40:26Speaker 3: of dollars to do it.
- 40:28Speaker 4: They don't care.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what they're smoking over there on like a
- 40:34Speaker 2: Saturday night. But you know, you got the three of
- 40:36Speaker 2: us sober on a Sunday morning, and.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Well, I don't know about you. Sorry, I mean it's
- 40:44Speaker 3: it's seven in the morning over here. I gotta get
- 40:46Speaker 3: I gotta do something.
- 40:46Speaker 2: To be away.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you gotta get a little pick me up, a
- 40:49Speaker 3: little something, little some something, you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 40:53Speaker 3: but uh yeah, so this this episode is just not
- 40:59Speaker 3: for me. Dog, just it was no good.
- 41:03Speaker 2: I'm going to rate it a five out of ten.
- 41:05Speaker 4: Okay, I'm not gonna rate it.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Yeah. I hope they do better next week. I really
- 41:15Speaker 3: hope they do better next They're not.
- 41:17Speaker 4: They're not though.
- 41:17Speaker 3: They're not going to do that.
- 41:18Speaker 4: They're not going to. They're not going to. I'm really
- 41:24Speaker 4: having I'm really I'm really having an internal crisis here, Okay, okay,
- 41:30Speaker 4: because I'm at the point where I feel like I'm
- 41:38Speaker 4: one of the hosts of a podcast that reviews a
- 41:41Speaker 4: show that I don't like to watch, right, And why
- 41:48Speaker 4: am I here?
- 41:49Speaker 2: Then? Yeah, well to provide the alternated opinion, mm hmm. Okay,
- 41:58Speaker 2: all Sunshine and Rainbows. You know, if it's a shitty show,
- 42:02Speaker 2: you don't represent that. Yeah, you know a lot of
- 42:07Speaker 2: people hate the show. You can represent that a lot
- 42:10Speaker 2: of people. You know, I don't hate it. I can
- 42:14Speaker 2: represent that. Yeah.
- 42:15Speaker 4: But but what I mean? I used to have fun
- 42:20Speaker 4: doing this podcast, and I don't always look forward to
- 42:25Speaker 4: it anymore because because I don't like the materials. I
- 42:30Speaker 4: don't like the material, don't get it. I don't like it.
- 42:35Speaker 4: And you know, in years past, it was like, all right,
- 42:39Speaker 4: you know, I'm going to suffer through Discovery, but you
- 42:42Speaker 4: know Lower Deck starts two weeks after that, or you know,
- 42:46Speaker 4: Strange New Worlds is coming back. You know, it's it's
- 42:52Speaker 4: few and far between. Now we got we got this
- 42:56Speaker 4: and Strange New.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Worlds, right, and even that's taking a drop.
- 43:02Speaker 4: I can live with. I can live with that. Yeah,
- 43:05Speaker 4: I can live with that drop.
- 43:06Speaker 3: I can't wait for them up an episode. Oh boy, Yeah, No,
- 43:13Speaker 3: I just I don't.
- 43:14Speaker 4: I don't. I don't want to be the guy who
- 43:16Speaker 4: comes on here and just takes on takes a ship
- 43:18Speaker 4: on the show sixty minutes.
- 43:20Speaker 5: Yeah, and I don't.
- 43:21Speaker 4: I don't want every week.
- 43:24Speaker 3: I guess like I don't want to either, And that's
- 43:26Speaker 3: why I always like, Okay, what can I do to
- 43:28Speaker 3: make it better? And that's why I come up with
- 43:30Speaker 3: what I come.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Up with, right, But you know that's also why I
- 43:33Speaker 2: try to find something that I really liked about.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Yeah, Like, I think it's a good balance that we bring.
- 43:37Speaker 3: It's just it's frustrating right now, man, but you know
- 43:41Speaker 3: we'll get read it.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Like I didn't like Holly Hunter's feet.
- 43:45Speaker 4: Yeah, nope, no, the feet. The feet thing is ridiculous,
- 43:50Speaker 4: that she's just a weirdo when she sits, and that's
- 43:53Speaker 4: ridiculous and there's no reason for it, and it's just
- 43:56Speaker 4: it's stupid.
- 43:57Speaker 2: It's just you have too many idiosyncrasies. You can't have
- 44:00Speaker 2: too many, Like.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Yeah, there's too many, there's too many.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Yeah, what college?
- 44:05Speaker 4: What college in the world do the students have that
- 44:07Speaker 4: type of access to the chancellor or the dean or
- 44:11Speaker 4: the president or whatever.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Well, and then she even helped them with the prank yep,
- 44:19Speaker 3: And and then she's given the the War College guys
- 44:22Speaker 3: ship for helping out his cadets. But she's doing it herself,
- 44:26Speaker 3: Like come on, so.
- 44:28Speaker 4: The thing where they cloned his eyeball yeah, what were
- 44:32Speaker 4: they trying to beat? The retinal scanner?
- 44:35Speaker 3: The retinal scanner okay.
- 44:38Speaker 4: But cloning someone's eyeball is is not the retinal scanner
- 44:42Speaker 4: is is scanning the blood vessels? Which are you know? Yes,
- 44:52Speaker 4: it's a random convergence when you're when your eyeball formed
- 44:56Speaker 4: in the womb.
- 44:58Speaker 2: So yeah, your DNA doesn't give you instructions on.
- 45:01Speaker 3: Again, we're thinking about it more than five minutes.
- 45:03Speaker 4: And fingerprints right, yes, yes, yes, identical twins have different fingerprints. Yep,
- 45:10Speaker 4: they have different retinals patterns, right, you know if they
- 45:16Speaker 4: needed his DNA? Okay, great, you get his DNA. But
- 45:24Speaker 4: I mean I know that they wanted the gag of
- 45:26Speaker 4: you know, carrying his eyeball up to the to the thing.
- 45:28Speaker 4: But doesn't make sense.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Come on, stop, this is this is my favorite comment
- 45:33Speaker 3: we've gotten yet. Someone has to on this series.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Not only are we going to tolerate Dan, we have
- 45:41Speaker 2: to have him. That's right, we need it.
- 45:44Speaker 4: So what's what's uh? What's what's her name? Who's who's
- 45:47Speaker 4: the helmsman on Strange New Worlds? What's her name again?
- 45:50Speaker 3: Oh?
- 45:51Speaker 4: Oh, Eric Ortegas, I'm more I fly the ship. I'm
- 45:57Speaker 4: the series.
- 45:58Speaker 3: That's right, that's right.
- 46:01Speaker 2: You demand Also, I got a I got another issue.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Did we need and this is going back to Strange
- 46:10Speaker 2: New Worlds too, but did we need a second introduced
- 46:16Speaker 2: long lived species the Lantha, Lantha whatever heights. Couldn't either one.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Couldn't both of those characters been allians?
- 46:30Speaker 3: Yeah, they could have.
- 46:32Speaker 2: And like, I want to see an episode where they
- 46:35Speaker 2: where there's like a rivalry between them, Like I want
- 46:39Speaker 2: I want them to to tackle that issue. I want
- 46:42Speaker 2: them to to talk about that, like, hey, you're a
- 46:46Speaker 2: you're a Lantha, Lantha whatever, you're long lived. Alorians are
- 46:50Speaker 2: long lived, don't mention their name. I want to see
- 46:53Speaker 2: something like that, Hey, you see two distinct species that
- 46:57Speaker 2: live a thousand years?
- 46:59Speaker 4: Real quick?
- 46:59Speaker 3: This gear that they're wearing in the picture that I
- 47:01Speaker 3: have up, let's just be a Mex Let's just be
- 47:04Speaker 3: a Mex production stuff, right, Yeah, that technology built.
- 47:08Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 47:08Speaker 2: They even use the term laser tag.
- 47:11Speaker 4: Yeah, laser tag. Yeah. You know, the the language they
- 47:16Speaker 4: use doesn't make sense. You know, they describe something as
- 47:21Speaker 4: a dumpster fire. Do dumpsters exist? In the thirty second?
- 47:25Speaker 4: We have programmable matter, we have replicators, we have Holi decks,
- 47:30Speaker 4: we have all of these things. You're telling me there's
- 47:32Speaker 4: a big smelly metal bin behind Starfleet Academy that catches
- 47:36Speaker 4: fire from time to time. Look, how would they even
- 47:39Speaker 4: know what a dumpster is?
- 47:41Speaker 3: Real quick, Scott, Scott, real quick. You're getting lower and
- 47:44Speaker 3: lower audio. You may need to get out and get
- 47:48Speaker 3: back in. I am yeah, Oh that's better. That's better
- 47:51Speaker 3: right there.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, okay, I use the word groovy. I brought
- 47:56Speaker 2: that back from the sixties. Okay, so maybe they.
- 48:04Speaker 4: Did they call each other douchebag. Yeah I don't remember, Yeah,
- 48:08Speaker 4: so do so. Douchebag is still a thing.
- 48:11Speaker 3: It's always a thing. A douchebag is always a thing.
- 48:16Speaker 3: There's always those kinds of people.
- 48:18Speaker 4: No, I mean the actual thing, the term that it is. No,
- 48:21Speaker 4: not the term, the actual thing, the item based on. Yes,
- 48:25Speaker 4: the the personal hygiene item still exists.
- 48:30Speaker 3: Who can say, maybe we'll get an episode.
- 48:35Speaker 4: In the listen, listen, listen, they have a makeover machine
- 48:40Speaker 4: that you want to They don't need those things. If
- 48:46Speaker 4: you can walk through an arch and get a ship
- 48:48Speaker 4: showered shave, you don't need that item.
- 48:54Speaker 3: I want an episode where they go through the history
- 48:57Speaker 3: of the makeover machine. They show the guy just toiling
- 49:01Speaker 3: in his lab. He's like, God damn it. People need
- 49:03Speaker 3: to be able to get a makeover, and in instance,
- 49:05Speaker 3: these people need fashion. Yeah, give me that episode. All right. Well,
- 49:16Speaker 3: so safe to say not our favorite episode. Should we
- 49:20Speaker 3: get to listener feedback?
- 49:23Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 49:23Speaker 3: Sure, all right, listener feedback? All right, we have a
- 49:31Speaker 3: lot of people who probably want to comment. We also
- 49:36Speaker 3: have got some voicemails. Scott, do you got an email?
- 49:40Speaker 2: Yes? I do. I've got a couple of emails.
- 49:41Speaker 3: Do you want to do the emails first?
- 49:43Speaker 2: Yeah? Sure, Okay, if you want to send us an email,
- 49:50Speaker 2: you can do so. And I just lost my Oh
- 49:56Speaker 2: here we go. Yeah, if you want to send us
- 49:58Speaker 2: an email, trek cast TG at gmail dot com. If
- 50:03Speaker 2: you want to send one to me, it's Strongbeard one
- 50:06Speaker 2: seven to one at gmail dot com. Uh, we got
- 50:09Speaker 2: one from duval I said, uh, this episode was a
- 50:14Speaker 2: seven less cringey groans this time around. It was honestly
- 50:16Speaker 2: a fun episode and enjoyed take and coach Reno. Uh,
- 50:20Speaker 2: but seriously, forgot about everything else, full stop. We need
- 50:22Speaker 2: to talk about this guy. So he's got a picture
- 50:25Speaker 2: of a guy in the background that's got a zombie
- 50:28Speaker 2: face and a flat top orange head of hair.
- 50:32Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah that guy.
- 50:33Speaker 2: Oh so do you you notice him too? Okay, the
- 50:35Speaker 2: flat top Pharaoh Ghoule, the Egyptian thriller background dancer. We
- 50:40Speaker 2: need his backstory. Four minute, twenty second mark.
- 50:43Speaker 3: This guy, I thought he was gonna say, I like turdles.
- 50:49Speaker 2: Yeah, we need to know more about him. Uh? Is
- 50:53Speaker 2: he yeah? Is he a distant relative to day? I
- 50:55Speaker 2: like turtles? Guy forgot the uh forgot the rest of
- 50:58Speaker 2: the episode. Uh, Kurtzman, give me answers. Now, anyway, that's
- 51:01Speaker 2: all I got, uttosto or whatever. Let's think it about
- 51:08Speaker 2: uh the Enterprising Your Trek cast New York Correspondent of
- 51:12Speaker 2: Freelance Correspondent. Thanks, good to hear from you. And then
- 51:17Speaker 2: we got one from dog Green. He goes Hi, Scott,
- 51:22Speaker 2: hope you're all well. First off, shout out to Tim
- 51:24Speaker 2: and England from Tim in Australia.
- 51:28Speaker 4: That's what we need. We need more Tims, more times.
- 51:31Speaker 2: And now for the main event. As a fifty somethings
- 51:32Speaker 2: Star Trek fan, I have watched Star Trek comes under
- 51:35Speaker 2: increasing attack in the last decade or so, complaints of wokeness,
- 51:39Speaker 2: and this isn't my Star Trek being fired off like
- 51:41Speaker 2: a drunk klingon with an itchy trigger finger. I have
- 51:44Speaker 2: done all I can to defend it, but three episodes
- 51:46Speaker 2: into Academy, I'm done defending. I just can't do it
- 51:49Speaker 2: any longer. Star Trek has always carried strong messages about
- 51:52Speaker 2: standing up for the underdog, for the oppressed, and for
- 51:55Speaker 2: the downtrodden, but those themes were never forced to the forefront.
- 51:58Speaker 2: The writers used to focus on acting rich characters and
- 52:01Speaker 2: engaging stories, allowing their audience to draw their own conclusions
- 52:05Speaker 2: about the social issues being explored. Those social messages feel
- 52:09Speaker 2: front loaded into both the writing and the characters themselves.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Entire personalities seem to revolve around the messages writers want
- 52:15Speaker 2: to convey, leaving no room for subtlety or personal interpretation.
- 52:19Speaker 2: I often hear that this new Star Trek isn't written
- 52:22Speaker 2: for me, that it's meant for a younger audience. That's fine.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Prodigy was made for a younger audience too, and I
- 52:29Speaker 2: appreciate it on those terms. But I just can't approach
- 52:32Speaker 2: Academy with the same mindset. If I'm going to stand
- 52:35Speaker 2: on my lawn and yell, yell, people to get off.
- 52:38Speaker 2: Maybe I need to do it barefoot so I can
- 52:40Speaker 2: touch at least some grass. As Abe Simpson once said,
- 52:45Speaker 2: I used to be it, but then they changed what
- 52:48Speaker 2: it was. Now what I'm now, what I'm with, isn't
- 52:52Speaker 2: it anymore? What's it? Seems weird and scary. It'll happen
- 52:56Speaker 2: to you, that's fair. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, good email, good email. Yeah,
- 53:02Speaker 2: thanks guys, both of you appreciate it.
- 53:04Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Those emails coming, We appreciate it.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Yeah. And then we got a couple voicemails. We also
- 53:09Speaker 3: got some people waiting to talk on the phone or
- 53:12Speaker 3: on the Skype with us. So first let's get to
- 53:15Speaker 3: the phone numbers or the phone calls. Uh, if you
- 53:18Speaker 3: want to leave us voicemail, you can as well leave
- 53:20Speaker 3: us voicemail at five seven zero six six one zero
- 53:24Speaker 3: zero zero one. That's five seven zero six six one
- 53:27Speaker 3: zero zero zero one. If you keep it under two minutes,
- 53:31Speaker 3: I can animate you, which is what we like to do.
- 53:34Speaker 3: And so our first one comes to us from T Bear.
- 53:38Speaker 8: So, heykey Bear here, we should cold have joined the
- 53:41Speaker 8: last show to see Dan's meltdown over this past episode.
- 53:44Speaker 8: But I guess this voicemail off s place. I'll have
- 53:46Speaker 8: to catch it up on the replay. Anyways, I'm entertained.
- 53:51Speaker 8: Take it for what it is. It's just a TV
- 53:55Speaker 8: show to enjoy at this point if you really think
- 53:58Speaker 8: about it. DS nine I kind of saw as a
- 54:00Speaker 8: war drama with Trek branding sometimes so Academy is a
- 54:03Speaker 8: teen drama with Trek branding. It's a simple show too
- 54:09Speaker 8: that nobody it's about. At least it's entertaining a totally
- 54:12Speaker 8: different generation. And actually it's got a better ensemble cast
- 54:15Speaker 8: format and focuses on his character is way better than
- 54:17Speaker 8: Discovery ever did. And to be honest, I still can't
- 54:20Speaker 8: remember have to Discover character names anything. Anyways. Things to
- 54:25Speaker 8: call out stays a transporter using Calica seven or nine,
- 54:28Speaker 8: ers Antidet, and Suson Thinger for card Kala's character was
- 54:32Speaker 8: basically Stal from Prodigy. One thing I wanted to point
- 54:36Speaker 8: out from last week betazd President Sadal he was signing
- 54:39Speaker 8: because his character was dead, so they had nothing to
- 54:41Speaker 8: do with the psionic barrier. And he actually took off
- 54:44Speaker 8: the vocalizer at the end so he could actually agree
- 54:46Speaker 8: with his own voice. Folking wort Uh Folking War College Cadet.
- 54:52Speaker 8: He's got jokes and really enjoying doctor and Janet Reno
- 54:55Speaker 8: so far, and we's Tilly anyways, Well they keep her up.
- 55:02Speaker 3: There you go.
- 55:03Speaker 4: It's it's almost like he has a crystal ball. He
- 55:06Speaker 4: knew I was going to melt downright, that's right. Yeah,
- 55:11Speaker 4: not not that I yeah, not that I enjoyed her
- 55:13Speaker 4: character at all, but you know, she's supposed to be here.
- 55:16Speaker 2: Where is she?
- 55:17Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 55:17Speaker 3: I think she's only going to be in one episode?
- 55:19Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, the doctor was this episode. Well, so
- 55:26Speaker 2: he's one of the only reasons I'm watching Academy.
- 55:29Speaker 3: Yeah, hopefully pops up soon. All right, we got another
- 55:32Speaker 3: we got another phone call, this one time from Tim,
- 55:35Speaker 3: So here we go.
- 55:37Speaker 9: Yeah, on the south coast of England reporting for duty.
- 55:43Speaker 9: So after last or the first episode of Staff Academy,
- 55:48Speaker 9: which I haven't had a couple of nice moments, it
- 55:52Speaker 9: would seem by episode three, all that has been totally
- 55:55Speaker 9: undone in what is possibly, with the exception of section
- 55:59Speaker 9: thirty one, the worst star Trek I have ever seen. Honestly,
- 56:06Speaker 9: I didn't make notes because it was just I just
- 56:09Speaker 9: couldn't stop watching it in utter decent belief. The thing
- 56:12Speaker 9: that got me the most was this so called captain
- 56:15Speaker 9: who lounges around looking like a scrag and wine mum
- 56:19Speaker 9: with no authority. She honestly, she looks kind of neurotic,
- 56:28Speaker 9: on the verge of a mental breakdown. The first officer
- 56:31Speaker 9: is still doing my head in. I can't even remember
- 56:34Speaker 9: her name, is what her name is. She's not scary,
- 56:37Speaker 9: she's not intimidating, She's just annoying. I can't think of
- 56:42Speaker 9: anything nice to say about this episode at all. They
- 56:45Speaker 9: say you should say one nice thing about it. The
- 56:48Speaker 9: start the first few episodes, the first few seconds of
- 56:53Speaker 9: the theme tune, which, as I say, is Ailiah's theme.
- 56:55Speaker 2: Check it out.
- 56:57Speaker 9: I think whoever made Build went out with the absolute
- 57:05Speaker 9: authority to go and destroy the franchise because I cannot
- 57:08Speaker 9: see this continuing after this. I'm so angry. It's just
- 57:13Speaker 9: completely I really don't want to watch it anymore. I'm
- 57:15Speaker 9: only watching it for competion, you know, so I can say, oh, yeah,
- 57:21Speaker 9: I've done I've done it.
- 57:22Speaker 8: I can have a.
- 57:24Speaker 9: I can have a thought on this because I've seen
- 57:27Speaker 9: it all. It's rubbish. Anyway, that's two minutes, boys, love
- 57:29Speaker 9: you very much. I will still watch it and I'll
- 57:32Speaker 9: still record Love you bye.
- 57:34Speaker 3: There you go, There you go.
- 57:37Speaker 2: The Fox has spoken worst Star Trek theme ever.
- 57:42Speaker 4: I skip it every time. I skip it every single time.
- 57:47Speaker 2: To listen to it, and tried to somebody said, you
- 57:50Speaker 2: can't you know, hummet or whistle there's no theme there,
- 57:52Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, you gotta be able to. And
- 57:54Speaker 2: I'm listening to him like yeah, this, there's no there's nothing. Yeah,
- 57:59Speaker 2: we all know the theme, the next Gen theme, d
- 58:01Speaker 2: Space nine, even the new stuff. We can you know
- 58:04Speaker 2: the card This has nothing you can hum to or
- 58:08Speaker 2: you know, if you heard it in the background, you
- 58:09Speaker 2: wouldn't recognize it as a Star Trek theme.
- 58:12Speaker 3: They should have just had Godsmack do the theme.
- 58:14Speaker 4: There you go.
- 58:15Speaker 3: Yah, yeah, it would have been great. I think all right.
- 58:18Speaker 2: Even people made the Enterprise Team will say that they
- 58:20Speaker 2: like the Enterprise Team better than this.
- 58:22Speaker 5: That's right.
- 58:22Speaker 3: You know, you put you put some Lincoln Park something. Yeah,
- 58:27Speaker 3: I mean, if we're gonna go for the kids, let's
- 58:29Speaker 3: go for the kids.
- 58:30Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 58:31Speaker 4: You know, you know it's funny. You know, it's funny
- 58:34Speaker 4: Daniel that you think Lincoln that you think Lincoln Park
- 58:37Speaker 4: is for the kids.
- 58:38Speaker 3: Hey, they just a new album you're dating.
- 58:41Speaker 4: Oh, I know, I know.
- 58:43Speaker 3: That's why I went to Charlie x X. At least
- 58:45Speaker 3: that's I don't know what that is, So that exactly, that's.
- 58:48Speaker 2: Current Lincoln Park.
- 58:50Speaker 3: Oh yeah, god Frost. We all suffer together. Yes, welcome
- 58:58Speaker 3: to Welcome to group therapy trauma. Yeah, speaking of suffering together,
- 59:03Speaker 3: we do got a couple of people on the line.
- 59:04Speaker 3: So we'll go with Hipsterstock first and then we'll go
- 59:06Speaker 3: with Chasbiz. So let me bring hipster Stock on right now.
- 59:11Speaker 3: There he is, Yeah, yeah, yes, hello, hello, So do
- 59:19Speaker 3: you hear me?
- 59:20Speaker 5: Yes? Okay, I don't want to wait for the night
- 59:24Speaker 5: to be over.
- 59:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what it feels like.
- 59:31Speaker 5: That would have been a way better theme song, exactly.
- 59:43Speaker 10: Yeah, don't go ittil long er, you'll get you're gonna
- 59:46Speaker 10: get this YouTube strike yeah, or I mean the other
- 59:54Speaker 10: thing would have been like oh no, yeah, it's just
- 1:00:00Speaker 10: there's nothing hummable about.
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: That about the beginning theme song. Or yeah it's terrible.
- 1:00:08Speaker 11: Now I don't like it that everybody's trashing the show.
- 1:00:13Speaker 11: It's an awesome show. No, I'm just joking, but really,
- 1:00:19Speaker 11: I think what what this show is? What problem the
- 1:00:24Speaker 11: show has is a framing problem.
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: Now, hear me out. Okay, Okay, Now, if.
- 1:00:33Speaker 11: They had labeled I wrote this on the on the
- 1:00:37Speaker 11: Facebook page, and I said, if they had listened to
- 1:00:41Speaker 11: the show as a community in space, it would have
- 1:00:46Speaker 11: been okay, you know.
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: And if they I mean no one.
- 1:00:51Speaker 11: They didn't say anything up until the very last minute
- 1:00:55Speaker 11: because they knew that people would be angry. They knew
- 1:00:59Speaker 11: that people would be angry at this ship. Okay, I
- 1:01:03Speaker 11: mean if they just wrote Star Trek colon DNC, that
- 1:01:09Speaker 11: would have been okay. People would have known exactly what
- 1:01:12Speaker 11: they're getting before they went in. But you know, that
- 1:01:16Speaker 11: had to frame it as like the best of the
- 1:01:18Speaker 11: best and all that stuff and put this in this
- 1:01:21Speaker 11: military you know, like framing, and that was totally wrong.
- 1:01:28Speaker 11: If they put community, and that would mean totally on brand,
- 1:01:33Speaker 11: because the dean's a little Ditchian community and the characters
- 1:01:37Speaker 11: a little quirky, and it would have been perfect. And
- 1:01:42Speaker 11: that would have taken all the vitreo from all the
- 1:01:46Speaker 11: hate bros like critical thinker, neurotic and all those others,
- 1:01:51Speaker 11: because they were being completely honest with what was going
- 1:01:56Speaker 11: to be presented.
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: But they didn't.
- 1:01:59Speaker 11: They said it as a as some military outfit that
- 1:02:04Speaker 11: was gonna be, you know, continue the proud traditions of
- 1:02:10Speaker 11: the Federation and Starfleet, a lot of that stuff.
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: Honestly, they came up short. But if they so, the
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: framing would have been.
- 1:02:19Speaker 11: If they did that, that would have been awesome and
- 1:02:22Speaker 11: nobody could have would have been able to complain about it.
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: What do you think?
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: I mean, I think you're right if they had. If
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: it wasn't Star Trek and this was just a sci
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: fi show, it's fine, it's whatever it's it's whatever it is.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: But being Star Trek, not only does it give it
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: more clout, but it gives it a certain it needs
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: to work within a certain framework, and it's just not
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: doing that.
- 1:02:55Speaker 12: I mean, Lower Decks was, you know, really silly. But
- 1:02:59Speaker 12: it's a cartoon, so you kind of view that it
- 1:03:02Speaker 12: was gonna be. Yeah, but this is a serious show,
- 1:03:08Speaker 12: right it was supposed to be.
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: Well, and I'm curious to see does it work for
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: the target audience?
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: If they're going for teens and young adults, isn't working
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: for them?
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: I don't know. Here's the thing. If they had geared
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: the teenage characters two, Okay, if the cadets don't act
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: like Starfleet officers because they're teens, that's one thing. But
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: when the faculty doesn't act like Starfleet officers because they're
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: on a show geared towards teens, that doesn't make sense.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: The adults should still be adults on the show, right.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: Yeah, they should.
- 1:03:57Speaker 11: Another thing is if they had move this from a
- 1:04:00Speaker 11: college to a high school, it would have been okay,
- 1:04:04Speaker 11: because you know, if you think about the Saved by
- 1:04:06Speaker 11: the Bell, Belding was a little uh, you know out
- 1:04:11Speaker 11: there sometimes.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: I mean the chancellor acts like Beltings sometimes.
- 1:04:17Speaker 11: And then you know, half the half the faculty at
- 1:04:21Speaker 11: Basside had adds a little quirk at some point.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: Right, So, so thinking of the wrong theme song when
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: we're thinking of the show, so maybe it should be
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: the yeah, maybe it all right?
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: I'm saying it's all right.
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: So sometimes I feel like they come up with these
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: ideas and it's like somebody comes up with this idea
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: for a show and it's finalized and they present it
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: and it gets approved. They don't have a round table
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: like this where people kick things around and brainstorm and
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: I hear your idea, and because of that, I come
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: up with a better idea, but then you know, the
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: third guy comes up with something even better. Like okay,
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: so hipster Spock. You just mentioned if it was a
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: high school, it would be better. Why didn't they do that?
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: We have established lore that Jordi went to ZEPHYRM Cochrane
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: High School, So why doesn't this show take place at
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: Zephyrom Cochrane High School, a prep school for start? Yes,
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: these are the kids, these are the kids who are
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: trying to get into Starfleet Academy. But they're still high
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: school kids. They're still fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, and seventeen, not
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: eighteen nineteen.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: Yes, I kind of like that because then it gives
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: you natural ending of the show where they finally did
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: they make it or not?
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: Yes? Yeah, okay that And because this is the future
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: where you can you can transport from one side of
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: the planet to the other. You can have Zephyrom Cochrane
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: High School in you know, I don't know it in
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: Kansas City, but you have. But you have students from
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: all over the place, right.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Right, because it's a private school, it's not based off
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: where you live. Yeah, I like that, all right? Anything
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: else you want to bring up a hypster squak. We
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: still got jazz biz. I want to stay too long.
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:06:20Speaker 11: One thing, I posted something about Star Trek toys on
- 1:06:25Speaker 11: the Facebook. I'm curious about what everybody thinks. So just
- 1:06:31Speaker 11: have a look and I'd be happy to, I guess,
- 1:06:35Speaker 11: take some comments.
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: Thank you?
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: All right?
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: Oh I like toys. I'll just take a look.
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: All right, Well, thank you all right. Uh And like
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: I said, we also have got jazz Bis on the line,
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: so let me bring him on. There he is, there's
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: jazz biz. Can you hear me?
- 1:06:53Speaker 8: Hear me?
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's better. Okay, yeah, So would.
- 1:06:56Speaker 13: You think, oh it was it was a show?
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Oh? I mean yes, that's something we can all agree on.
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: It was a show.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm watching if it was a show for streaming service, yeah,
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: definitely was a show.
- 1:07:13Speaker 13: Well, it's just like Daniels showed the ratings this week
- 1:07:16Speaker 13: that everybody loves reruns are beating this and yeah, this
- 1:07:23Speaker 13: is a brand new show. It's just premiered last week
- 1:07:26Speaker 13: and you have three episodes out.
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: Let me explain that real quick because most people listening
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: to this won't have seen that. So we in the
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: Facebook group and this is why you guys should join
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: our Facebook groups. I showed the top ten TV shows
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: in Paramount Plus as of yesterday Saturday, and just two
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: days after Starfleet Academy was released the latest episode, it
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: was completely out of the top ten in the United States,
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: not even anywhere near it. And in fact, as Chaspis said,
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: reruns from Everybody Loves Raymond, the thirty year old show
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: that came out in nineteen ninety six. We're in the
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: top ten. So that's pretty rough. We did have a
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: listener who did post their top ten. I believe he's
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: in a different country though, and Starfleet Academy was like
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: number nine, so still in the top ten, but barely. Yeah,
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: So that's that kind of lets you know how the
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: reception is. And and if people are watching it.
- 1:08:31Speaker 13: Think of the millions of dollars they spend per episode
- 1:08:34Speaker 13: on this. Oh it's crazy because production design. It looks great.
- 1:08:38Speaker 13: That's the thing is.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it does look looks great, but look great. Yeah,
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: and it got a razz this.
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: Week, Yes it did, Yes, good nominated, Yeah.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: Yes, any publicity is good publicity. Yeah.
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:08:55Speaker 13: So it's sad when your favorite series is not getting.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: I was talking to a friend of mine earlier this
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: week about Star Trek and he's a big Star Trek fan.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: He doesn't have Paramount Plus, so he's not up on
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: all the news stuff. But you know, we used to
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: watch Dark Works kids. I've been friends with him for
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: thirty years. Yeah, and I said, yeah, we're talking about it.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, the Section thirty one movies. Like, huh.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: I'm like, even though he doesn't have Paramount Plus, he
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: was like, I had no idea they made a Section
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: thirty one movie. I'm like, you don't need to watch
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: it as a Star Trek fan. You don't know. Oh wow,
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: Yeah he knows what Section thirty one is.
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: I wish I wish I didn't. I wish I didn't
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: know they made it.
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's part of the job, Dan,
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: part of the job, right.
- 1:09:40Speaker 13: I can I give you guys a quiz? Can you
- 1:09:42Speaker 13: name all the the characters on the show right now?
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: No?
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: Not even a try not try?
- 1:09:49Speaker 13: What about the lead actor?
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: Okay, Caleb Mirror.
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: So you got Caleb, you got Girl Boss Dad, you
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: got Jock Douchebag. Yeah, you got.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: Hollow Girl, Comelloid.
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: Discommelloid, you got not Deanna Troy and her nerdy brother. Yes,
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: homeless Chancellor because she's barefoot and yeah, weird, she's on
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: some serious gummies tea fetish guy Admiral poop apples, that's right,
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: he's my favorite.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: And the.
- 1:10:33Speaker 13: And it's funny because we didn't see the doctor in
- 1:10:34Speaker 13: this episode at all at all, and to me, it's like,
- 1:10:40Speaker 13: I like to see him teach. You know, there's your
- 1:10:42Speaker 13: other guy you're talking about that be it professor there.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: H, don't forget the medical hologram.
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: What's up?
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: Don't forget the hologram too?
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he said the hollow girl.
- 1:10:59Speaker 13: Girl, which why does she need a sonic shower? Doesn't
- 1:11:04Speaker 13: make sense?
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought about that. Why was she changing? She
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: just like, you know, hit a.
- 1:11:10Speaker 13: Button maybe experience experience so much information? Yeah, your hologram,
- 1:11:18Speaker 13: your program. Yeah, like you're going to school with the computer,
- 1:11:22Speaker 13: you should be like like especially just think how fast chat,
- 1:11:26Speaker 13: JBT and Google is right now in your thousand years
- 1:11:29Speaker 13: in the future, like you could come up with things
- 1:11:31Speaker 13: and instantaneously.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: So that could be a fun bit where like they
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: tell her something and she mishears it all the time,
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: like like a I does yes, yes, announce the name
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: and then yeah yeah, like yeah, like something you want?
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: Cake?
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: Did you say rake?
- 1:11:53Speaker 13: Yes, destroy this planet?
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: No?
- 1:12:00Speaker 13: Okay, what's your thoughts on the war College the betazoid
- 1:12:05Speaker 13: girls there?
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:12:07Speaker 13: And the betazoid girl has this whole thing on her
- 1:12:09Speaker 13: neck that if she takes it off, she's gonna have
- 1:12:12Speaker 13: like this like Jean Gray Boards of Power. Then the
- 1:12:17Speaker 13: shows up that the war callers will try to use
- 1:12:20Speaker 13: her as the super weapon.
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: Oh yeah, she'll be a weapon for sure.
- 1:12:26Speaker 13: Yes, yeah, yeah, because you know you don't have that
- 1:12:30Speaker 13: line and just throw it away at the very first
- 1:12:32Speaker 13: time you see her.
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: Well, I mean sometimes you do, but I don't think
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: you know.
- 1:12:37Speaker 13: And then she has advice on her neck the whole time,
- 1:12:39Speaker 13: So yeah, filling something big is gonna happen.
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: No, she'll probably save the day with it.
- 1:12:47Speaker 13: Yeah. Or do you think Caleb will find his mom
- 1:12:50Speaker 13: with it?
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: So hmm, there's an idea. Well she she she takes
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: it off, and uh, without that, she doesn't even need cerebro.
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: She can find mutants everywhere.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, it'll have to be a thing where like
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: it'll it'll cost her her life somehow to find the mom.
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: So does he want his girlfriend or does he want
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: his mom?
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: And I just realized who the mom is. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: I didn't realize that.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:22Speaker 13: Well, I mean she's barely on this episode or the
- 1:13:24Speaker 13: first episode for three minutes.
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: She's mom attorney at law.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: I'll go back and look. I won't.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: Yeah, no, you won't at all.
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: All right, all right? So uh he Man Treller, What
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: do you think.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: I loved it? Yeah, I don't watch it.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: I'm going to watch in the theater.
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: I think it looks great.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: And to cleanse my palate before I watch it in
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: the theater, I'm going to watch the night.
- 1:13:52Speaker 13: No, no, no, you guys are supposed to review that,
- 1:13:56Speaker 13: remember God forget?
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: Oh yeah. Do you think they'll make a castle graceful
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: popcorn bucket?
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: I hope they do. It would probably be the it'll
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: be the first popcorn bucket I buy.
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: Yeah, same.
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: Like I thought that.
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: So my daughter and I are watching the old filmation
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: oh uh cartoons right now, we go back and forth
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: between he Man and Shira and uh. I pulled out
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: my son's he Man's for her, and she's been playing
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: with those. I got her a couple of Shira ones. Yea.
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: Every day after work I have to play he Man
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: and Shira with her, which is fun because she has
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: a continuing storyline. We don't just do we don't just play.
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: She does it like a comic book where you know
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: the story we did last night, you know that still exists.
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: So we've been doing this for a few months now.
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: And at this point, Adam and Tila are married.
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: Okaylab what they're not cousins. Yeah, they are on the show.
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: No they're not. I thought they were.
