- 2:06Tonight the Dodgers back home to begin a nine-game home stand and will open up with the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 2:11The Dodgers had a sweep of the three-game series in St. Louis last week
- 2:15and now hope to keep that going against the Cardinals here tonight.
- 2:18And to keep things going, hoping to extend the win streak will be Claude Ostin for the Dodgers.
- 2:23Claude has won five straight, he has a record now of eight and four.
- 2:27It will be right-hander Chuck Taylor coming out of the bullpen to make his first start of the year going for the Cardinals.
- 2:33And we'll have the batting orders coming up for you right after this message.
- 3:34Tricks, Milwaukee and the World.
- 3:38Here tonight Claude Ostin, eight wins, four losses going for the Dodgers.
- 3:45Claude with a record of earned run average of 2.48.
- 3:48He has eight and twelve lifetime against St. Louis.
- 3:51Taylor, one and three on the year, earned run average of 2.10
- 3:55and he is one and one against the Dodgers lifetime.
- 3:58He's been in 21 games and tonight makes his first start.
- 4:02Batting orders coming up and we're now our national anthem.
- 4:32And we'll have the batting orders coming up and we'll be back.
- 5:02The Dodgers and the Cardinals are here on the batting orders.
- 5:29For St. Louis, Lou Brock in left field, Jose Cardinal in center, Richie Allen at first, Joe Torre playing third, Kyle Taylor in right, the Dodgers take the field.
- 5:58Continuing the batting orders, Ted Simmons will be the catcher for the Cardinals, William Javier at second base,
- 6:06and shortstop Dowell Maxwell and the pitcher will be right-hander Chuck Taylor.
- 6:13For the Dodgers, Maury Wills at short, Manny Moda in left, Willie Davis in center, Wes Parker at first, Bill Grabarca with the third,
- 6:27Willie Crawford in right, Ted Sizemore at second, the catcher Tom Haller, and pitching tonight, Claude Osteen, the umpire, Sokhory at the plate, Engel, Wendell Stett and Fenton on the bases.
- 6:45From nine games coming up on the home stand, the Dodgers playing the Cardinals three, the Chicago Cubs will be here for three over the weekend and Sunday will be camera day, this is our camera day here at Dodger Stadium.
- 6:57They'll be allowed to go on the field and get photographs and autographs. It's going to be a big day Sunday. The Cubs will be in town. The Pirates are in next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and then the Dodgers head out on their biggest road trip of the year with four games at Cincinnati and four games at Atlanta.
- 7:15The Dodgers are home now for nine, already looking ahead to the next trip when they have to play the two clubs involved with them in the center race in the West. Alright, we're all set, time to play ball. The Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals from Dodger Stadium.
- 7:28And now for the play by play, here has been Scully. Thank you, Jerry. Hi everybody and a very pleasant evening to you wherever you may be. The Dodgers are back home and glad to be here.
- 7:36However, their record on paper certainly does not indicate that. They have been a much better road club than they have been at home. The Dodgers are eight games over 500 on the road. They're 18 and 10, but as far as home cooking is concerned, somebody's burning the food. They're 12 and 14.
- 7:52We'll see if they get well or not in this stand. Lou Brock followed by Jose Cardinal and Richie Allen. Claude Osteen's first pitch is high and tight and Brock has to go down. The pitch goes to the screen. One ball and no strikes.
- 8:06Osteen is coming off his finest pitching effort of the year. He's five another cut out of the Pirates, about as good as a man can pitch. Billy Glebarco hits it on the grass at third. The next pitch is low and away, ball two. So Osteen is behind now. Two balls and no strikes to leadoff man Lou Brock.
- 8:27Brock hitting 311 and one big change in Brock this year. He is not stealing a lot of bases. Here's the two-hole pitch. Fast ball, tapped up along third base and by the time Haller picks it up by the speed he Brock has the play beaten.
- 8:46So Lou Brock hit a foul ball on his foot in Houston about three weeks ago and has never really healed. It's still faster than most and he beats out a slow hopper up along third base and the batter will be Jose Cardinal.
- 9:01But prior to the injury he had stolen, Brock that is, had stolen only nine bases and of course that's not quite the Brock we're accustomed to seeing. So Brock is first base of the squip single and here is Jose Cardinal.
- 9:17Cardinal the right hand batter, Jose hitting 294. Osteen delivers and a change potted up along third foul and the count on one. Cardinal is another swifty, the way he can fly.
- 9:40No balls in one strike. The count to Jose Cardinal. In case you missed some of the scores with Duckerman, the Phillies beat Atlanta 2-1.
- 9:48It's in the down to yet Montreal. It is now 6-4 Cincinnati and they're in the bottom of the ninth at Montreal.
- 9:570-1 to Cardinal and Osteen goes to first base with a lob throw to Parker and Brock stays in the bag. Brock has stolen nine bases. He is 9-for-9. 0-1 the count to Jose Cardinal.
- 10:13Osteen at the belt checking Brock, still looking. Now comes the play and a full swing foul off to the right and out of play. The count 0-2. The Mets beat Houston 2-1. Tommy Seeger got on the right back and won his eighth.
- 10:29The Yankees beat San Francisco. They're getting ready, Blass and Marichal. The Cubs have got four runs in the first inning of San Diego now at bat. The Yankees beat Minnesota 5-2. The Angels and Baltimore are even at 5-5 in the tenth.
- 10:45Oakland beat Cleveland 5-2. Kansas City over Washington 8-1. 7-2, Detroit leading Milwaukee at the end of 6-4 to Chicago over Boston at the end of 7-1-2. The strike two pitch to Cardinal outside for 1-1 and 2.
- 11:05Dodgers with the outfield of Mota Davis Crawford. Grabarckowicz deep at third. Wills hollering over to Shiesmore. And the pitch to play to Grantville wide at third under Grabarckowicz, under Wills and through into Cowell left field.
- 11:23The block keeps on going and there's no one able to cover second base so Cardinal moves into there. Both Wills and Grabarckowicz just missed the ball. Shiesmore left to cover third.
- 11:38Osteen left to back up and by the time Marichal will get down to second base, Mota had no play at all. So on a front snake, well actually a top ball for a base hit and now a ground ball that goes for a double. Osteen is in a lot of trouble.
- 11:53Second and third, nobody out and Richie Allen to bat it. All players say Mota's eyes. That one just did get under Grabarckowicz's club and was deflected by Wills.
- 12:08Richie Allen, first base open, nobody out. Osteen with a handful of trouble looks to Tommy Haller. He now works out of a windup and comes to the plate and the breaking ball fouled away. 0-1.
- 12:27The Dodgers were in three wild games in St. Louis and they won all three games, 8-6, 7-6 and 8-6 again. There was a lot of scoring there. One of the big reasons, the Astor Terrapin St. Louis where baseball just had a tendency to shoot by.
- 12:45For instance, in St. Louis, Cardinal would have had a clean single to the left and not a leg double. That ball would have exploded through to Mota. 0-1, the count to Richie Allen.
- 12:59Here comes Osteen's pitch down to his feet and it's smothered by Haller and they count one ball in one strike.
- 13:07The Cardinals are four and a half games back of the league leading Cubs and despite the fact they're two games under 500, indicate the Dodgers quite. They are six games above 500 but they're nine and a half back of the Reds.
- 13:23So it's a big difference chasing Chicago and Cincinnati.
- 13:29Here's a 1-1 pitch to Richie Allen. Fast ball, low ball too. Joe Torrey is on deck and it appears that the Dodgers do not want very much of Richie Allen anyway.
- 13:41Willie Davis retrieving a ball from the bleachers and tried to flip it up and it was dropped so he finally clears it off. It's a tie-knock for the moment. 2-1, the count.
- 14:00Tommy Haller wig wagging a few signs out. Osteen Ruddy in the 2-1 pitch, swung on and missed like dude. Yeah, Joe Torrey and Carl Taylor to follow.
- 14:18Osteen has been a red hot pitcher in trouble here in the first inning. Brock topped the ball up along third and beat it out for a base hit and Cardinal had a leg double.
- 14:30Fawd looks to Brock, goes to the windup and the pitch to Allen is a bouncer foul, a third speared down there by the coach Kissel, that's George Kissel and the count remains 2-2. Dick Sissler coaching at first, managed your red chain deans along with his pitching coach Billy Muppet in the dugout.
- 14:52Bob Millican handling things in the bullpen.
- 15:05Osteen leading Haller. Now Fawd into the windup and the 2-2 pitch is 5-4-3. There's a bluff by Haller sending Cardinal back to second base. Luke Brock with an infield single has extended his streak. He is now hitting 12 straight.
- 15:23He's at third, Cardinal at second, nobody out just the start of the ballgame. Osteen left foot on the rubber, he has a look at Tommy Haller. Nodges and goes through the windup, he was a 3-2 pitch, breaking ball outside 4-4.
- 15:39Richie Allen draws the walk, base is loaded, nobody out and Joe Corry the batter. The Dodgers of course would hope to get Corry to hit the ball to somebody on the ground.
- 15:53So they set the infield in double play depth. Corry is hitting 2-99. He has 5 home runs, 31 runs batted in. To Richie Allen at first, Jose Cardinal at second and Luke Brock at third.
- 16:12The first three men up have gotten aboard. Left side of the infield deep, Osteen from a windup and the fastball a strike on one. Frank Corry the playdump fire. Bob Engel at first, Harry Wendelstead at second and Tony Benson on the line at third.
- 16:32All over, Cincinnati beats Montreal 6-4. Gary Nolan is now 7-2. Here's a strike on pitch to Corry. Fastball hit down to short, Wills goes to Sizemore. Back to Barker, double play and Brock scores.
- 16:52They play the infield back and it was just as well they did because Wills had to backhand the ball to hit to his right. So they get the double play 6-4-3. The Cardinals have a run and with 2 out here is Carl Taylor.
- 17:15Right hand hitter. He's playing over Joe Hakes since left hander Osteen is on the mound. Brock delivers, slow curve over first ice on one. Taylor hitting 2-09.
- 17:35Right hand batter. Osteen looks as Cardinal comes down the line of this and a fastball outside 1-1. Flash out of Baltimore, Ken McMullin has just did his 8th home run of the year for the Angels so they've broken a tie in the top of the 11.
- 17:55And one strike to Carl Taylor. And here comes Cardinal to the plate. The throw he has out at the plate. Corry started a flat safe and then set out and here come the Cardinals.
- 18:09Frank had his palms down and then brought the right hand up. And I think Corry by that kind of a fall he would have feared that Cardinal had the play beaten but missed the play. And then Hallow was able to turn around and pin him. And Cardinal was on his hands and knees pointing to where he thought he hit the play.
- 18:29So that would have to be the interpretation of Corry that Cardinal had beaten the play but he missed the play and Hallow was able to nail it. So in the first inning the Cardinals have to sell for one run on two hits. Nobody left. And at the end of half an inning the Cardinals won and the Dodgers coming out.
- 18:47It's always been fun to watch a game at Dodger Stadium. Win or lose you get a lot of action for your money. But this year there's a special new treat in store for you. Farmer John Dodger Dog. Just think. A full 10 and a half inches of meaty, juicy wieners bundled in a bun and, if you wish, smothered in mustard and relish.
- 19:04It's worth the price of admission just to latch into a Farmer John Dodger Dog. But you folks who can't get to the games can enjoy the very same thing in a different size if you pick up some Farmer John all meat wieners at your market. One bite and you'll say they're like no other wieners you've ever tried.
- 19:21You see Farmer John smokes them of a real smoke from native western hood to give them a special western flavor through and through. Come out to the ballpark and try a Farmer John Dodger Dog. Or, for one reason or another, if you can't make it, get yourself some Farmer John all meat wieners to enjoy during the broadcast.
- 19:40Believe me, they are real winners. Farmer John Dodger Dog and Farmer John all meat wieners.
- 19:52Bottom of the first inning, the Cardinals have a run. They could have had a lot more when you realize they have the bases loaded and nobody out. And the only run came as Joe Torre rounded into a double play. And then Jose Cardinal out trying to steal home.
- 20:06And we've got quite an opening act here as Dodger Stadium Lights has turned on again for what should be a dandy home stand. Or, he will, believe it or not, then Manny Moda and Holy David.
- 20:31Here's Chuck Taylor on the mound. He's 1-3 with the league. No record against the Dodgers this year. 1-1 lifetime. And Chuck into the windup. The first pitch to Will. Going inside, ball one.
- 20:44Chuck Taylor from Shelbyville, Tennessee.
- 20:50The next pitch to Will, fouled away and they've got one ball one fight.
- 20:57Chuck Taylor and young Ted Simmons behind the plate. With Richie Allen, Julian Javier, Dow Maxville and Joe Torre in the infield. There's a button. Why the first? Over to get it is Allen and to late, Will Dagger.
- 21:19Morrie Wills, jumping about equally distance from first base and the pitching mound. And both Allen and Taylor hesitated. So that when Allen did finally pick it up, Wills had outlegged Taylor to the bag and Richie had to eat the ball. And the battle will be Manny Moda.
- 21:42Moda and Wills have worked together about as well as Simon and Garfunkel on the last road trip. And Morrie takes outside ball one. Moda hitting 3-0-4. Last year when the two boys came to Los Angeles as Dodgers, it seemed like every time Wills bunted, Moda bunted. We'll see if the pattern holds up tonight. Here's a throw to first driving Wills back.
- 22:111-0 the count to Manny Moda. Taylor delivers. There's the punt. Uplung third. Down to get it, Torre. He picks it up, throws, nips him. And on the sacrifice, Wills takes second. So it seems like every time Wills runs Moda bunt and was won out on the sacrifice, here's Willie Davis.
- 22:37Willie Davis was red hot on the road trip and was finally sidelined with a slightly pulled muscle. Will has lifted his average to 2-99.
- 22:50Willie, who was in the doldrums for a long time, now has most hits on the ball club. He's even past Wes Parker. The pitch to Willie. Low and away, ball one. Davis has 64 hits. Wes has 63.
- 23:07Willie takes a 22 base hit on the last road trip. Davis got a pick up Wills. 1-0 Cardinals in the first inning and Chuck Taylor at the belt. Right-hander delivers and a curve ball is down to DeJavuille.
- 23:21Willie has it and throws him out. And on the play, Wills advances to third. That'll bring up Wes Parker. Wes Parker batting 2-97. Has a left-handed batter and of course you see him the most from that side.
- 23:44He's hitting 3-33. So the tying run is 90 feet away and the person of Wills has Parker trying to pick him up. Throughout his career as a base stealer, Wills has not been a threat to steal home.
- 23:59Moria said that he has been unable to ever erase the fear of failure as far as home is concerned. The fifth roll, ball one. DeOtori right up with him near the bag at third.
- 24:17Chuck Taylor reading Ted Simmons and the 1-0 pitch to Parker. Breaking ball and a ground ball to Javier. Willie has it, does it for Parker and the Dodgers have turned away. No runs ahead, a man left at third at the end of one. Cardinals one, Dodgers nothing.
- 24:32Well you know it seems these days everyone is publishing guides. You can find guides to restaurants, guides to theaters, sporting events, television shows, night spots. There are shopping guides, sightseeing guides, amusement guides.
- 24:47There's just about everything you can spend your time or money on. But the guide that is the most complete, most useful and most often referred to is the one you already have. That's the yellow pages. In it you can find the complete listing of most every kind of product and service available in your area.
- 25:05It's your own personal guide to shopping, selecting services, entertainment centers, medical and pharmaceutical needs and a host of other things too. So friends, the next time you need help in finding what you need, just remember that you already own the granddaddy of all guides.
- 25:23And there's nowhere you can find help faster than right there in your yellow pages.
- 25:36Now, in the second inning with the Cardinals leading the Dodgers one to nothing, right fielder Carl Taylor who was at the plate when Cardinal was thrown outside to steal home. So Taylor will start it off. He'll be followed by the young foot-shitting catcher Ted Simmons and second baseman Julian Javier.
- 25:54He'll start formally with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Those being delivered, fastball for a strike.
- 26:13Next one, a strike in the count of who and who.
- 26:21Carl Taylor has three stepbrothers, one of whom is Baltimore Orioles for his baseman Boob Powell.
- 26:29The next one inside, Carl gets away from it. One and two. He's from Sarasota, Florida.
- 26:35Six to not 207 pounds.
- 26:42One and two to Carl Taylor.
- 26:45He's been a baseball player professionally since 62. He bowed tips a breaking ball and strikes out. So Carl Taylor down on strikes and the batter will be Ted Simmons.
- 27:02Ted Simmons made his major league debut in the recent Dodger Cardinals series in St. Louis. He's a switch hitter. He's batting 423. He might be the brightest young prospect in the Cardinal organization he takes his fastball lobe on.
- 27:17In fact, one of the reasons the Cardinals were able to trade away Tim McCarver, the fact that they knew Simmons was just about ready this year.
- 27:27Here's the 1-0 pitch on the way, spray foul off of the second-deck facade and down below behind the Cardinal dugout in the count one and one.
- 27:38Simmons hobby is motorcycles. He graduated from the University of Michigan.
- 27:44Actually, he majored in speech and radio TV hasn't quite gotten a degree yet.
- 27:49Here's the 1-1 pitch to Ted. Little low on inside ball too, 2-1.
- 27:57Here's the youngest of four children. His dad is a horse cleaner. Ted Simmons, that's the place.
- 28:05Oh, it seems 2-1 pitch. Slow curve, line drive foul and Simmons checking the handle of the bat, but it's okay. 2-2.
- 28:16Simmons has been playing professionally since 67 and actually just for a portion of that year since he hadn't gotten out of school until June.
- 28:26So he's really just played 68 and 69. Ted Simmons, 51188 pounders, 21. Line drive, that's Robarkowitz.
- 28:38So Simmons lines the third, two away.
- 28:45Jordan is on a tear for Detroit. He just hit his third home run of the game, one of the three at Grand Slammers.
- 28:54They're playing Milwaukee.
- 29:04Here's Hilly and Javier.
- 29:09Javier batting 238, right hand hitter. Osean delivers sinker and it's a one hopper short hop by Will who throws him out.
- 29:18Boy, that thing exploded. Boy, he stayed with it.
- 29:22So the birds are down in the second in order and at the end of an inning and a half, Titanals 1 dodges nothing.
- 29:28Music says more than words about the spirit of 76.
- 29:32Music plays.
- 29:54The spirit of 76 from Union 76. It's a spirit of new way to drive. The freewheeling feeling of the open road.
- 30:02The confident feeling of a well performing car. The confidence you get at Union 76.
- 30:08In the gasoline, in the spirit, in the professional care for you and your car.
- 30:13Union 76 is where the spirit began and that's where you can get it now. Union 76. That's the spirit we feel.
- 30:32Bottom of the second inning with the Cardinals leading the Dodgers 1 to nothing. Chuck Taylor is tuning up to Ted Simmons.
- 30:44The Cardinals 1 run, 2 hits. The Dodgers no runs, 1 hit. The Billy Grabarkowitz, Willie Crawford and Ted Sizemore.
- 31:03Grabarkowitz in the crowd to the plate. Taylor's first pitch, down and away, ball 1, 1 and 0.
- 31:14Grabarkowitz as he stands in the plate is hitting 344. Takes a look at the breaking ball and that's picked off the corner at the knees in the count 1 and 1.
- 31:26Chuck Taylor comes right back 1, 1 and the breaking ball is low, ball 2, 2 and 1.
- 31:35So you have 2 Taylors, Carl Taylor in right field, Chuck Taylor on the mound. Chuck played a lot of Tulsa so no doubt Grabarkowitz and Taylor had many battles between them.
- 31:45There's 1 hit up the middle, base hit. Billy Grabarkowitz singles to center, takes a big turn, he's going for 2. The throw to Javier, he's out.
- 31:59Billy Grabarkowitz tries to catch Jose Cardinals' placing but Cardinal with the play in front of him nipped him at second base.
- 32:08So Grabarkowitz down on a hustle try, 1 away and the batter will be Willie Crawford.
- 32:15So we're starting off to what should be a great home stand. We had Cardinal throwing out attempting to steal home and now in the second inning Grabarkowitz trying to stretch it single into a leg double.
- 32:25Both men were caught. Crawford takes the strike.
- 32:30That play went 8-4 of your scoring. Next one missing, 1 and 1 to count to Willie Crawford.
- 32:42On deck, head size more.
- 32:47One run, 2 hits for the Cardinals, they loaded the bases with nobody out and the run scored as Joe Torre hit him with double play.
- 32:54Now the 1-1 pitch to Crawford, pass ball over for a strike, 1 and 2.
- 33:02The pass ball seemed to be a good sinker.
- 33:11The next one to Crawford is missing inside, 2 balls and 2 strikes.
- 33:26He'll his next pitch filed away and he counts 2 and 2.
- 33:39Chuck is 28 years old and he is 1 of 7 children.
- 33:45Soft curve is lifted into shallow left field, out goes Maxville, in comes Block and it's Maxville for the catch.
- 33:53So a little pop fly to down Maxville, 2 out and head size more coming out.
- 34:04Head size more batting 262.
- 34:20Right end to Taylor into the wind up and delivers and the pass ball to Globe, all 1 and 0.
- 34:31Now the 1-0 pitch on the way to Ted, breaking ball is hit into the hole and through into left field.
- 34:38So the Dodgers have 3 hits but they haven't been able to get anybody home yet.
- 34:42And with 2 out, Tom Hallow will be the batter and one ball is for space and identification.
- 34:47This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 34:497 to 9 is swing and use time on DFI Los Angeles.
- 34:53This is Chuck Cecil making way for Dodger baseball tonight.
- 34:56Here is the music tomorrow evening at 7.
- 35:02Tom Hallow coming up, Tom hitting 298.
- 35:06He has all running 14 runs batted in.
- 35:15Tommy waiting with size more held on by Richie Allen, a throw over there, sending size more back to the bag.
- 35:26Taylor has the belt and delivers and Hallow fouls it away, all 1 and 0.
- 35:32Same two clubs tomorrow night.
- 35:35It will be Joe Mueller going for the Dodgers and Mike Torres for St. Louis.
- 35:40And the concluding game of the series will be Don Sutton and Steve Carlton.
- 35:47The Cardinals will be followed by the Chicago Cubs and then the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 35:51There's a drive down the right field line, base hit.
- 35:54Guy Farr on his way to third, a long single for Hallow.
- 35:58And the Dodgers are spinning their wheels.
- 36:00They've had 3 hits in the inning but they can't get a run.
- 36:02They've had 4 hits in the game and it's still one of them St. Louis.
- 36:06And the batter will be Claude Osteen.
- 36:18In his last 8 games, Osteen has been hitting more like an all-star outfield.
- 36:25Over the past 8 games, Osteen has hit 333.
- 36:329 hits and 27 at bats and 6 runs batted in.
- 36:37So Claude has the plate and Taylor delivers and it's swung on and missed on one.
- 36:46Of course it should be pointed out that Osteen has 4 hits and 4 runs batted in in one game.
- 36:53That was that overwhelming Dodger victory 19-3 over the Giants.
- 36:58The next one is outside 1 and 1.
- 37:00But he is the best Dodger hitting pitcher.
- 37:06Final score, the Angels beat Baltimore 7-5 in the 11th inning.
- 37:10Fischer the winner and Hall the loser.
- 37:12Ken McMullen got them well in the 11th.
- 37:15Half swing foul by Osteen in the count of 1 and 2.
- 37:292 down in the second inning.
- 37:31The Cardinals leading 1-0.
- 37:33Dodgers have had 3 hits in the inning, but Ravachowicz who led off with a single.
- 37:37We're so now trying to stretch.
- 37:39Here's the 1-2 pitch to Osteen, high and away with a fastball.
- 37:43Osteen trying to help himself.
- 37:50He's trying to win his sixth in a row.
- 37:54He has a good chance to get even here.
- 37:562-2 pitch on the way.
- 37:58Breaking ball popped up.
- 38:00Next bill is shortstop.
- 38:02Angle's out, falling, backed up by Lubroch and Maxey makes the catch in the inning as well.
- 38:07So 3 hits with nothing to show for it and 2 left.
- 38:10And at the end of 2, Cardinals 1-0.
- 38:24Osteen in the count of 1.
- 38:292 down in the second inning.
- 38:31He's trying to get a pass to Osteen, high and away with a fastball.
- 38:35Osteen in the count of 1.
- 38:372 down in the second inning.
- 38:39Osteen in the count of 1.
- 38:542 innings run the book.
- 39:17Here at Dodger Stadium and the Cardinals are leading the Dodgers 1-0.
- 39:21A run on 2 hits for the Cardinals, no runs, 4 hits for the Dodgers.
- 39:25Let's go to the third and more play by play.
- 39:27Here's Jerry Dodgers.
- 39:28All right, Vinnie and Dowell Maxwell start it off.
- 39:30Taylor to follow and then Brock.
- 39:32And called Osteen all set to go to work now.
- 39:34He retired the side in the order in the second inning.
- 39:37Dowell Maxwell batting 178.
- 39:40No home runs, that's 5 runs batted in.
- 39:42Dowell's had a tough time getting it going this year.
- 39:47Now Osteen all set to go, the w aimed it from the pitcher on the way.
- 39:50Taps toward short, Wills comes in fast up with a dirty play.
- 39:54And Simon Maxwell is out.
- 39:55So Dowell grounds out short to first.
- 39:57And the pitcher, Taylor, coming up.
- 40:00He has none for 2.
- 40:02Taylor has been in the bullpen all year.
- 40:04He's been in 21 games but has only 2 at bat.
- 40:07So Chuck Taylor coming on here in the third inning.
- 40:11Taylor right hander all the way.
- 40:14Marnight's second game of the series and then on Thursday night the finale.
- 40:19Remember Thursday night, several of the off-hasslenots will be honored here at the ballgame.
- 40:25The Dodgers playing the Cardinals.
- 40:27Here's the pitcher Taylor, swung on a tap foul off the third base side.
- 40:31And it is strike one.
- 40:33Third inning, the Cardinals lead 1-0.
- 40:38An infield hit.
- 40:40And a roller that just did get through the infield for a 2-base hit.
- 40:43Then a walk and a double play got the Cardinals to run.
- 40:47Taylor wears number 42.
- 40:51Osteen ready to pitch.
- 40:52Curve, swung on a miss, strike two.
- 40:54A good pitch breaking into the right hand hitter.
- 40:570-2 the count.
- 41:05Once again, Osteen checking signs of catcher Tom Haller.
- 41:09Back ball away and it's ball one, strike two.
- 41:12Nine game home stand for the Dodgers.
- 41:14Three with the Cardinals, three with the Cubs, and three with the Pirates.
- 41:18Then a brief road trip to Cincinnati and Atlanta.
- 41:23Here's the 1-2 pitch.
- 41:25The curve is a little high for the ball, 2-2.
- 41:27The Reds won again tonight.
- 41:28They beat Montreal 6-4.
- 41:31Nolan relieved by Kellett, Carroll, and Grainger.
- 41:35Moore was the loser for Montreal.
- 41:392-2 pitch.
- 41:41On the way.
- 41:42Back ball, a ground ball wide to third.
- 41:44Drabakovic there up with it, makes his play across.
- 41:46It's time to get Taylor 2-0.
- 41:49So 2-0, 2-2 down, and the batter will be Lou Brock.
- 41:53He got a little roll up the third baseline in the first inning.
- 42:00So Brock coming on one for one, is now hit safely in 12 straight games, hitting 3-11.
- 42:08Top one up the third baseline and beat it out in the first inning and then scored the run.
- 42:12So Lou Brock is at that.
- 42:142-0, third inning.
- 42:22Here's Osteen ready now and the pitch on the way.
- 42:25Back ball bounced back past the mound, near second.
- 42:27Seidmore there, throws in time for the out-of-the-bounds shot.
- 42:31They're all out on ground balls in the third inning.
- 42:34Three up and three down and the score at the end of two and a half in the play.
- 42:38Cardinals won, Dodgers nothing.
- 42:40My friend Farmer John really enjoys the competition of big league baseball.
- 42:44In fact, he wishes there were a Sausage League so his fabulous Farmer John sausage could compete against the rest of the sausages across the country.
- 42:53He feels his sausage was winning a war because it had so much going for it.
- 42:57After all, he recruits his pork back in the famous corn country and brings his fine Eastern corn-fed pork out here live.
- 43:05Not frozen or in cold storage like most packers do.
- 43:09Then it's U.S. conspected and dressed fresh right here in the West.
- 43:13That's why it's fresher than fresh.
- 43:15And Farmer John's sausage is seasoned to an all-time Western recipe to give a marvelous mouthwatering Western flavor to every lean, luscious morsel.
- 43:23All of which means it's the East and most in quality and the West and most in flavor.
- 43:29To wrap it up, Farmer John's sausage won the gold medal at the California State Fair.
- 43:34So come to think of it, there is a Sausage League.
- 43:36Farmer John's sausage is in a league all by itself.
- 43:44Now to the last of the third, the Dodgers start with the top of the order, Will Smoota Davis coming on.
- 43:50Will's beat out a bunch.
- 43:53He has one of the four Dodger hits.
- 43:56Maury batting 269, no homer, 16 runs batted in.
- 44:02The Cardinals now play up on the corner.
- 44:05Allen in first base, Torian on the grass.
- 44:07The third, Taylor, picks him.
- 44:08Maury's at fastball on the corner first strike. 0-1-1.
- 44:12Dodgers opening the nine-game home stand.
- 44:14The Cardinals on the road have won 10 and lost 11.
- 44:19They're 14 and 15 in home.
- 44:20There's a bouncer hit back over the middle.
- 44:22They hit the center field.
- 44:24Will singles in the center, hits number five for the Dodgers and still no runs.
- 44:29Danny Moada coming up, sacrificed in the first inning.
- 44:34Moada batting 304.
- 44:36We'll see if the Dodgers go for the sacrifice now.
- 44:39In the first inning, they wanted to try to get the one run.
- 44:42But then Davis and Parker ground it out.
- 44:49It has strike one count as others.
- 44:55Moada waiting to high and Will golf first.
- 44:58This is a breaking ball and it's one ball, no strike.
- 45:06Moada bluffing that time.
- 45:11Here's a swing of the foul off to the lead out of play.
- 45:14Wills was running that time.
- 45:22So now he comes back.
- 45:23Moada has a look at third base coach Danny Ozak.
- 45:29Wills again, a short lead.
- 45:34Chuck Taylor, right hand pitcher, pitching to Manny Moada.
- 45:39Here's the look and the pitch on the way to Manny.
- 45:41Ground ball back to the pitcher, down to second one.
- 45:43On the first base, double play.
- 45:46So Moada grounds into a double play started by the pitcher.
- 45:49Taylor to Maxwell, on to out.
- 45:53The Dodgers now still trying to get something going.
- 45:57Moada grounds into the double play.
- 46:01Two outs and here's Willie Davis at bat.
- 46:03Willie grounded the second his first time up.
- 46:07So Taylor has allowed five hits but still no runs.
- 46:11The Cardinals have converted two hits into a run.
- 46:15And here's Taylor now checking.
- 46:17Willie Davis waits.
- 46:20The Dodgers stadium looks to be in beautiful condition.
- 46:23Here's the pitch low for a ball, one ball, no strike.
- 46:28Grass, bright and green.
- 46:32It's got to be the world's most beautiful ballpark.
- 46:34Dodgers stadium.
- 46:35Here's the wind to fan, the one, oh, six.
- 46:37Off speed, it's swinging a five ball to the left field.
- 46:39Lou Brock right there, moves in a few steps, waiting, and Lou makes the catch.
- 46:43The Dodgers are down into the third.
- 46:45No runs on one hit and none left on.
- 46:48And the score is three innings of play.
- 46:50The Cardinals.
- 46:54Grass, bright and green.
- 46:57It's got to be the world's most beautiful ballpark.
- 46:59Dodgers stadium.
- 47:01Here's the wind to fan, the one, oh, six.
- 47:03Off speed, it's swinging a five ball to the left field.
- 47:05Lou Brock right there, moves in a few steps, waiting, and Lou makes the catch.
- 47:09The Dodgers are down into the third.
- 47:11No runs on one hit and none left on.
- 47:14And the score is three innings of play.
- 47:16The Cardinals won and the Dodgers nothing.
- 47:19In about half a minute, a hydroplane can cover over half a mile of water.
- 47:24In about the same time, you can dial a call to any place in the country.
- 47:43Dial direct, it's faster.
- 47:50Well, I'll tell you one thing, it's not half a dozen of one and six of the other.
- 47:54Dialing direct is faster and easier and better.
- 47:57And all the information you might need about direct distance dialing is in the front pages of your phone book.
- 48:03Things like area codes for numbers outside your own area.
- 48:06And how to get directory assistance for telephone numbers outside your own area code.
- 48:11It's all in there, everything you'd ever want to know to make your calls the faster, easier, better way.
- 48:18Dialing direct.
- 48:25We've played three innings.
- 48:26It is one to nothing.
- 48:27The Cardinals lead one run to it.
- 48:29The Dodgers no runs and five hits.
- 48:31The Cardinals coming to bat as we go to play on the fourth back to action in here.
- 48:35Okay, Jerry, in the fourth inning with the Cardinals holding on to that one to nothing lead despite the fact that the Dodgers have filed up five hits.
- 48:42They'll have Jose Cardinal and Richie Allen and Joe Torre.
- 48:51Cardinal, right hand hitting center fielder very fast.
- 48:54He has a leg double in the first inning.
- 48:56Breaking ball outside, ball one, one and all.
- 49:07One and all to Jose.
- 49:10The next pitch is down at his feed ball too, two and all.
- 49:20Cardinal waiting on Osteen now.
- 49:23Claude pitching very carefully, two balls and no strikes.
- 49:25He has the string, he retires the last seven in a row.
- 49:28Fastball missed.
- 49:29Joe pitching so carefully, he's behind three and all to Cardinal.
- 49:34Jose checking with George Kissel, coaching at third.
- 49:40Now the three-all pitch, the slender center fielder is in for a strike.
- 49:45Three and one.
- 49:47Cardinal built somewhat like a whippet.
- 49:50He's built for speed.
- 49:51He's 5'10 and only 150 pounds.
- 49:57Here's a three-one pitch to Jose.
- 49:59Fastball hit foul right back of Dick Sisley, coaching at first.
- 50:15Cardinal is a cousin of Oakland shortstop Bert Campaneras.
- 50:21And facially he would remind you a little bit of Orlando Cepeda.
- 50:25Three-two pitch on the way, fastball fouled away and he lost his bat as the ball went in the upper deck.
- 50:30And Coach Kissel has to come and get it.
- 50:33So three and two, the count to Jose Cardinal, who's been playing professionally since 61.
- 50:40He's spent three years with the Angels, he's out of the giant farm system.
- 50:46And in the last two years with Cleveland.
- 50:50This is his first experience in the National League since 1964 when he had just 20 at bats.
- 50:57Cardinal hitting 294 and Osteen's fastball is away 4-4.
- 51:02So Jose drops to first base and Richie Allen coming up.
- 51:11Richie Allen walked on a three-two pitch in the first inning.
- 51:15Allen hitting 304.
- 51:24We were mentioning before that Chuck Taylor, the pitcher, comes from a family of seven children.
- 51:29Richie Allen knows what it's like to have a boarding house re-cheese from a family of eight children.
- 51:37Osteen's fastball is high, ball one and one and all.
- 51:43He has two brothers who are professional baseball players, Hank Allen, in field with the Washington Senators,
- 51:50and brother Ron is in the Phillies organization.
- 51:56One-nothing in favor of the Cardinals, fourth inning.
- 51:58Cardinal occurs, held on by Parker.
- 52:00Osteen comes to Allen and the breaking ball gets the inside corner, one and one.
- 52:05One and one to count.
- 52:25The next one bowed back, one and two to count to Richie Allen.
- 52:41Allen waiting, nobody out here in the fourth inning.
- 52:43The Cardinals leading the Dodgers one to nothing.
- 52:52Osteen checks Cardinal, a pitch to Allen, he checked his swing and the pitch was away.
- 52:58So he went three and two and walked in the first at bat, and now Osteen comes right back two and two.
- 53:14Richie Allen, a singer in the offseason, boy he's made some pictures moan.
- 53:19The two to pitch, slow curve, bowed away at the end of the sixth.
- 53:25Allen raising horses and singing at one time, in fact he organized a singing group.
- 53:33Whether they are still in business when he's playing baseball, we don't know.
- 53:40The group called the Heavenistics.
- 53:45Two to count to Richie Allen, Joe Torey on deck.
- 53:52Now Osteen, Ruddy, a look at Cardinal, decides you better drive him back for the flip throw to Parker.
- 53:59Cardinals have a run, they loaded the bases with nobody out and the run came over when Torey hit into a double play.
- 54:06Osteen at the belt, checks Cardinal, a pitch to Allen, is flying to left field.
- 54:11The motor coming over makes the gap, Cardinal holding on, the flip always hit hard.
- 54:17The motor was coming to his right and caught it with both hands up over his head, and line drive was just beginning to take off.
- 54:23It needed a longer runway, and here is Joe Torey.
- 54:29When you see a big leaguer like Richie Allen hit a line drive just taking off at the left field here,
- 54:35you can imagine how it must be to be playing up inside the bag at third and have them hit a shot at.
- 54:42Here is Torey, hit into the double play in the first inning, hits the ball hard, and will set the back end ball to start it.
- 54:50Osteen's pitch is low, ball one.
- 54:59Cardinal, an excellent base runner, he has stolen 13 bases in 14 tries, so Osteen really has to watch him.
- 55:08The 1-0 pitch to Joe Torey, the fastball is going on and missed, one and one.
- 55:24Torey now has stolen a lot of bases, he has gone as high as 64 in the minor leagues, and there he goes, curve of strike and the throw, no way.
- 55:34It's off the glove of Sizemore, backed by Will, but he had the bag stolen anyway.
- 55:39It was in the dirt and on the wrong side, and all Sizemore could try to do was make a quick tag, and he just flicked it and slowed it down.
- 55:48Cardinal steals his 14th base, he has 14 out of 15, one and two to count to Joe Torey.
- 55:59Time call, Cardinal not quite ready yet, shaking up a little bit on the play.
- 56:08It looks like a hand, and it is the left one apparently.
- 56:16Cardinal has heard his either hand or wrist, and he wears either tape or a sweatband on the left wrist, and George Kissel is saying bring out the spray, so they'll ice that hand a little bit and try and numb it.
- 56:38They're checking that spray is ethyl chloride, and they'll spray the left hand and wrist, so it's time out, Cardinal gets tended to.
- 56:49Trainer Bob Bowman is out there spraying it.
- 56:59So let's say Cardinal steals the base after Richie Allen lined out, the count one and two to Joe Torey, and they're still working on the left hand and wrist, and it's basically the hand.
- 57:12And now Cardinal explaining what happened to Will.
- 57:25So Cardinal at second, one and two to count to Joe Torey.
- 57:32Osteen on the rubbers and off it, and goes to the Rodzen bag, Claude straddling it as he looks into Tommy Haller.
- 57:39Torey waiting on deck, right fielder Carl Taylor, another right hand batter.
- 57:45One nothing, St. Louis, four of innings, one out.
- 57:49Osteen at the belt, and the one-two pitch on the way, breaking ball, grounded fair, backhanded by Grabarkowicz who fakes a throw, then goes to second, and they've got Cardinal.
- 57:59What a play.
- 58:04Boy, what a heads-up play by Philly Grabarkowicz.
- 58:09That is so much better a play than let's say an outfielder or an infielder just blindly making a dive at a ball because there was a great deal involved and only a split second to make a judgment.
- 58:22Grabarkowicz went deep back in the bag.
- 58:24He had a play, but only a slim chance, despite the fact Torey is slow, he still had to make a very long throw, but he still faked a throw, and sure enough Cardinal took the bait, and they had him hung out the drive between second and third.
- 58:38Torey is a board on a field of choice, and Cardinal has nailed six five four from Grabarkowicz to Sizemore, and Carl Taylor takes ball one.
- 58:48Heads-up play by Philly Grabarkowicz.
- 58:51The one-oh pitch outside ball two, two and oh.
- 59:04Two and oh the cows.
- 59:09Now Osteen delivers fastball for a strike, two and one.
- 59:12Grabarkowicz made a very good play.
- 59:14I believe it was on Bobby Bonds up at candlestick when the Dodgers were leading in a big game, 19 to three, and he backhanded a ball near the bag and went after Bonds who was running a third and got him before Bobby could get back.
- 59:29Here's a two-one pitch.
- 59:30Over is the bank two.
- 59:32So Philly Grabarkowicz doing a fine job down there at third base.
- 59:35Everybody has been talking about his bat.
- 59:37Naturally, he was hitting up there almost 400s for a long while.
- 59:41Good boy, his grub has been doing a good job too.
- 59:45Two and two to Carl Taylor.
- 59:47Now Osteen delivers.
- 59:49Breaking ball got him.
- 59:50Swing it, and the inning is over.
- 59:51So that's a chance of a fielder helping out a pitcher.
- 59:54No runs, no hits.
- 59:55A man left.
- 59:56At the end of three and a half innings, Cardinal's one Dodgers nothing.
- 1:00:00Friends, there's a good reason you're seeing so many drivers turning into Union 76 stations these days.
- 1:00:06They're in favor of improving our air, and they're doing their part by filling up with new low-lead regular 76 with 80 percent less lead.
- 1:00:16Less lead in the gasoline means less lead in the air, and now new low-lead regular 76 gives you the chance to help clear the air.
- 1:00:26Over half the cars on the road today can use it with no loss in overall performance.
- 1:00:32No engine adjustments.
- 1:00:34New low-lead regular 76 meets the proposed 1971 California and federal anti-pollution regulations.
- 1:00:43For those who care about cleaner air, drive into Union 76 and fill up with the spirit of new low-lead gasoline.
- 1:00:50New low-lead regular 76, available now at more than 500 Union 76 stations in California with more to come.
- 1:00:58Look for the sign, 80 percent less lead.
- 1:01:04Bottom of the fourth inning, the Cardinals leading the Dodgers one to nothing.
- 1:01:08Boy, it's been a dandy ballgame.
- 1:01:09We've had a man thrown out trying to steal all.
- 1:01:12We had Billy Brevarklis, the man thrown out, with Cardinal.
- 1:01:15We had Billy Brevarklis out trying to stretch his single into a double.
- 1:01:18Billy Brevarklis took a great play to nail Cardinal just now.
- 1:01:22The Dodgers, meanwhile, have had five hits, but no runs.
- 1:01:26So the Cardinals are still leading only on to a one to nothing lead.
- 1:01:30Wes Barker, 0 for 1 at the plate.
- 1:01:33Takes a look at the first one and the sinker is low, ball one.
- 1:01:37Barker has an 18-hitting streak.
- 1:01:40Now Taylor comes back 1-0 and a curve on the hands hit right at Javier.
- 1:01:48Bill Parker lying to the second baseman.
- 1:01:51He was jammed, and the battle will be Brevarklis.
- 1:01:57Dodgers had three hits in the second inning, but no runs.
- 1:02:01Billy let off with a single, and it was a good heads-up try.
- 1:02:05Cardinal plays a very deep center field.
- 1:02:08Oh, save field, so he can come in and get him.
- 1:02:11He just didn't want a ball hit over his head.
- 1:02:13So Brevarklis tried to take the extra base on him, but that's just life.
- 1:02:17So it was not a foolish gamble.
- 1:02:20It was calculated, and Cardinal was just a little bit quicker
- 1:02:23and made a more accurate throw than Brevarklis had counted on.
- 1:02:27The strike one-fist, low and outside as he fakes a bunch, 1-1.
- 1:02:34A run three hits for the Cardinals.
- 1:02:36No runs, five hits for the Dodgers.
- 1:02:40Here's the 1-1 pitch on the way.
- 1:02:42Breaking ball, flung on a miss, 1-2, a little high slider.
- 1:02:47Taylor doesn't like to come up.
- 1:02:49Most of his pitches are down.
- 1:03:02Here's the 1-2 pitch on the way.
- 1:03:04Inside, almost got him with a fastball on the hand.
- 1:03:142-2.
- 1:03:20Taylor reading Ted Simmons, now to the windup.
- 1:03:23Fastball, popped in the air back of first base.
- 1:03:25Richie Allen inside the foul line.
- 1:03:28And now just on the line makes the catch for the owl.
- 1:03:31A fair ball if you're scoring, two down, and the batter, Willie Crawford.
- 1:03:39Willie Crawford popped to the shortstop down Maxville, 0-1.
- 1:03:54Taylor's soft curve is high, ball one, 1-0.
- 1:03:58Delighted honor the Wilson High School, winner of the LA City Baseball Championship.
- 1:04:03They were saluted tonight by the Dodgers, the Wilson players were introduced prior to the game.
- 1:04:07Well that's San Fernando Valley State.
- 1:04:09Honored guest a little later on June 16th.
- 1:04:12The next pitch is strike one and one.
- 1:04:15In fact, let me see.
- 1:04:16San Fernando Valley, the NCAA National College Division champs of the earlier,
- 1:04:21pitches fouled and Crawford broke his bat, he'll have to get another.
- 1:04:25So San Fernando Valley will be the guest on a Friday night,
- 1:04:29and the CIF champion Lakewood High Baseball team honored on June 16th.
- 1:04:34So if you're happy to put the spotlight on some well-deserving youngsters,
- 1:04:38and find ball players to boot.
- 1:04:45The next pitch is out five, ball two.
- 1:04:48Chuck Taylor pitching tonight is going to be busy tomorrow night.
- 1:04:52Tomorrow night, since June is dairy month, the annual milking contest will be held before the game.
- 1:04:58Jim Brewer against Chuck Taylor.
- 1:05:01Curve is hit foul outside of first place.
- 1:05:04We told you that Chuck Taylor is one of seven children.
- 1:05:07His dad is a farmer.
- 1:05:09He probably knows a great deal about milking, and he'll go against Jim Brewer,
- 1:05:14who has done his share of milking in Oklahoma.
- 1:05:17Here's the 2-2 pitch to Willie Crawford.
- 1:05:20Fastball got him and down he goes, flinging, and that's set for the Dodgers.
- 1:05:23They're retired in order for the first time tonight.
- 1:05:25At the end of four, the Cardinals won, the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:05:29Summer, baseball, your favorite beverage.
- 1:05:33They all go together to make a man's life as enjoyable as, well as enjoyable as summer.
- 1:05:39Baseball, and your favorite beverage.
- 1:05:42But like a little rain of nights after a string of hot chocolate,
- 1:05:45and like the best pitchers will need some relief help in the late innings,
- 1:05:48you need a change of pace drink from your usual brew.

- 1:06:16So friends, when you've had the best, it's hard to go to something else.
- 1:06:21And nobody makes Small Blicker like Schlitt's.
- 1:06:25Nobody.
- 1:06:32Right now, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:06:35This is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
- 1:06:38This is Dave Holmes.
- 1:06:39I'll tell you all about my Cincinnati doll and how you can send some pins for it
- 1:06:43on the Dave Holmes Show tonight on JFI Los Angeles.
- 1:06:48Ten, seven, six, seven, six.
- 1:06:52To the fifth inning, one to nothing Cardinals.
- 1:06:54They have a run on three hits, the Dodgers no runs five hits.
- 1:06:57Ted Simmons, Julian Javier, and Dow Maxville.
- 1:07:00Simmons, the switch hitting catcher batting right-handed,
- 1:07:03hit a bullet at Grabarckowicz in the second inning.
- 1:07:09Ted started the night at 423.
- 1:07:12Hostin Ruddyen comes to him with a fastball on the hands,
- 1:07:15and it's lifted back a third and down the line.
- 1:07:17Wills on the run, makes the over-the-shoulder catch.
- 1:07:26Fine play by Maury.
- 1:07:27He was flanked by Grabarckowicz and Moda.
- 1:07:31And without breaking stride, he caught it going away.
- 1:07:34One down, and to batter Julian Javier.
- 1:07:38Javier hit a sinking line drive that exploded right at Wills' feet.
- 1:07:43He shot Hostin through him out.
- 1:07:45So, Julian's 0 for 1.
- 1:07:49In case you join us late, the Cardinals loaded the bases in the first inning.
- 1:07:52An infield single by Brock, a double by Cardinal, and a walk through Allen.
- 1:07:56And Brock scored a story hit into a double play.
- 1:07:59Curveball is lined to left.
- 1:08:01Moda coming in a hurry.
- 1:08:02He's got it.
- 1:08:09Boy, I'll say one thing, Julian Javier is not being cheated at the plate.
- 1:08:13He's getting his rips and he's hitting the ball hard,
- 1:08:15but they're gloving him to death.
- 1:08:17First it's Wills and now it's Moda.
- 1:08:20Many met that line drive head-on out there.
- 1:08:23Two down, and to batter down Maxville.
- 1:08:30Maxi grounded his short in the third inning.
- 1:08:33Hostin's fastball is 5 for 1, 1-0.
- 1:08:42Maxville hitting 178.
- 1:08:46Takes it away.
- 1:08:57Maxville, 5'11, he's 160 pounds.
- 1:09:01Two-0 pitch.
- 1:09:02Over for a strike.
- 1:09:032-1.
- 1:09:09Dow doesn't have to worry about a lack of batting average.
- 1:09:12In the sense he is well prepared for the day he calls it a career.
- 1:09:15The 2-1 pitch, Maxville takes low ball three.
- 1:09:18He has an electrical engineering degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
- 1:09:32The 3-1 pitch, Maxi hits it to right field.
- 1:09:34The Crawford is there, puts it in the bag and that's that.
- 1:09:37So they're gone in the second inning.
- 1:09:39One, two, three, at the end of four and a half.
- 1:09:41Cardinals one, Dodgers nothing.
- 1:09:44Even though he'd like to, Farma John can't get you into the games free,
- 1:09:48but he says if you can buy his sweet succulent Farma John ham now then,
- 1:09:52you'll have to save enough on your food bill for the price of admission.
- 1:09:55Ham is one of the least expensive red meats you can buy,
- 1:09:59and Farma John ham gives you even more for your money.
- 1:10:02The secret is its wonderful western flavor from the smoking that adds gourmet taste to feel
- 1:10:07to all sorts of inexpensive leftover dishes.
- 1:10:10So Farma John's money saving trick is to get one of his plump perfect hams,
- 1:10:14enjoy hot baked ham the first day or two,
- 1:10:17then serve it in such luscious leftovers as casseroles,
- 1:10:20creamed over biscuits and omelets, salads, sandwiches and what have you.
- 1:10:24I don't know exactly how much you'll save, but whatever,
- 1:10:27you'll have plenty of eating enjoyment doing it.
- 1:10:30Farma John ham, gold medal winner at the California State Fair,
- 1:10:35and as we like to say, the east and most in quality and the west and most in flavors.
- 1:10:41Make it the lead off spot on your shopping list, Farma John ham.
- 1:10:48Bottom of the fifth inning, the Cardinals holding on to a slim one to nothing lead.
- 1:10:52A reminder in this home stand, it's the most attractive one,
- 1:10:55The Cardinals will be here tomorrow night and Thursday night.
- 1:10:58Mike Torres, big right hander, goes tomorrow night against Joe Mueller, Steve Colvin.
- 1:11:03Mike Turner will go against John Sutton on Thursday.
- 1:11:06Then the Cubs will be in Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:11:11And Thursday night, the men from the moon, Captain Charles P. Conrad,
- 1:11:15Captain Richard Gordon and several other members of our astronaut team
- 1:11:18will be here to see the Dodgers and the Cardinals.
- 1:11:24Ted Sizemore takes the strike on one.
- 1:11:29The Cubs will be here the 12th, 13th and 14th at Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
- 1:11:34Remember Saturday night, 7 p.m., ladies.
- 1:11:37Pitch to Sizemore low, one and one.
- 1:11:39And then finishing up the home stand pre-game next week with the Pirates, the 15th, 16th and 17th.
- 1:11:47One and one to Ted Sizemore.
- 1:11:50Taylor works quickly and just one one pitch, half ball in for a strike.
- 1:11:56Will Vastagel has just hit his tenth home run of the year in the fourth inning with a man on board
- 1:12:00at the Candlestick, so they are leading the Giants now 3-0.
- 1:12:07One-two pitch on the hand hits the bat and goes into the lower deck,
- 1:12:11and it also flattens Sizemore to boost.
- 1:12:17So Grabarckowicz was whirled around by a fastball on the hand,
- 1:12:20and Sizemore is flattened high and inside, and it's one and two.
- 1:12:29Taylor now takes a breather, but here he comes again, and the one-two pitch.
- 1:12:33Fastball is hit by the mound, deep to second baseman, the Javier, who throws and gets him for the out.
- 1:12:40Sizemore grounding out the Javier.
- 1:12:52That will bring up Tom Haller.
- 1:12:57Tommy Haller, that will be a hit down the right field line in the second inning.
- 1:13:03He takes a strike, but it looks like Taylor now is starting to settle down a bit.
- 1:13:08The Dodgers had five hits in the first two innings plus.
- 1:13:12Now he's starting to get them out.
- 1:13:14The pitch off-speed and over, strike two.
- 1:13:17After Will Singleton will open up the third, he has retired six in a row.
- 1:13:23And here's Haller and Osteen do up next.
- 1:13:27Chuck Ready and the strike two pitch on the way.
- 1:13:30High ball one. One and two.
- 1:13:35Taylor is making his first start.
- 1:13:39He has an ERA of two.
- 1:13:42Last year he won seven and lost five.
- 1:13:45One of his games is shut out and it was against the Dodgers.
- 1:13:48Haller takes a low, two and two.
- 1:13:52Oh, he has him down one-nothing in the fifth inning tonight with one out.
- 1:14:00Chuck tows the rubber, Haller waiting.
- 1:14:02Right hander into the windup and the two-two pitch, fastball away, ball three.
- 1:14:07He's gone all the way to Haller.
- 1:14:13Sunday is camera day here at Dodger Stadium.
- 1:14:16Hope he'll be out for that.
- 1:14:18And kids on the 26th, he's got a big one.
- 1:14:20Change curve is fouled away down the left field line and back into the lower deck.
- 1:14:25On June the 26th, that's helmet night.
- 1:14:30What else do we have?
- 1:14:32We have astronaut night on Thursday.
- 1:14:34We're going to be milking cows here tomorrow night.
- 1:14:37Camera day Sunday, helmet night, and game number 1,000, that's going to be a big one.
- 1:14:43There's a high foul off third.
- 1:14:45Torrey coming to the dugout, to the mouth of the dugout, and the ball goes right down and in.
- 1:14:50Alan Foster off the bench to make sure Torrey didn't get hurt.
- 1:14:54Three and two.
- 1:14:58The celebration of game number 1,000 is July 1st.
- 1:15:02One thousand.
- 1:15:04Boy, oh boy, oh boy.
- 1:15:12Three and two, the count to Tommy Haller.
- 1:15:15How many of the thousand have you seen?
- 1:15:20Here's the three-two pitch.
- 1:15:22Fastball lifted to straightaway center and shallows.
- 1:15:25In comes Cardinal. Jose is there to handle it. Two outs.
- 1:15:33That's seven in a row now, retired by Taylor.
- 1:15:37So he's showing some indication in contrast that he has much better control.
- 1:15:44First three innings, Dodgers sprayed them for five hits, but no runs.
- 1:15:49The only single play would be the inning, the second when the Dodgers had three hits but could not score.
- 1:15:56Here's Kualocene.
- 1:15:58Taylor ready and delivers fastball for a strike.
- 1:16:01He's pitching ahead of the hitters now, invariably getting the first pitch over.
- 1:16:05Where in the first couple of innings he was just the other way around.
- 1:16:08Chuck Taylor, the strike one pitch, line drive at Richie Allen and the inning is over.
- 1:16:16So the Dodgers now have gone eight straight up and down and at the end of five, Cardinal's one, Dodgers' nothing.
- 1:16:23It takes a lot of people, helping people, a lot of people.
- 1:16:33It takes a lot of people when you're not in good shape.
- 1:16:43Most of the time you probably don't need any help placing a long distance call,
- 1:16:48but when you do there's a long distance operator to help you and that includes overseas too.
- 1:16:54Today you can call just about any place in the world and whether it goes by satellite, radio or undersea cable,
- 1:17:02your overseas operator will do her best to see that your call gets through no matter what country you're calling.
- 1:17:09So it's a lot of people, helping people, helping other people.
- 1:17:17That's what it's all about.
- 1:17:29Through five innings, the Cardinals one run, three hits, no errors.
- 1:17:32The Dodgers no runs, five hits and no errors.
- 1:17:36So for the moment let's end it with Jerry.
- 1:17:39All right, Benny, you've been giving all the special events coming up,
- 1:17:42but we can also remind again that the fans on the field at 1130 Sunday morning through 1210,
- 1:17:48you've been permitted to go on the field to get pictures and autographs of the Dodgers and Cubs between batting practices.
- 1:17:54The annual camera day, Dodger Vivitar Camera Day, sponsored by Ponder and Beth, in cooperation with the Dodgers this Sunday.
- 1:18:00A lot of great prizes for the best photos too.
- 1:18:04And we've got California's Bicentennial celebrity, the noted artist Nick Volpe, and Nick has just taken us out.
- 1:18:11So he is our Bicentennial celebrity here tonight.
- 1:18:16All right, we're cut to go into the sixth inning of the ball game.
- 1:18:20The Cardinals coming to bat, one-nothing in favor of St. Louis. Back to play here at St. Louis.
- 1:18:24Okay, Jerry Chuck Taylor, who has settled down to do a bind job now in the last couple of innings, will lead it off.
- 1:18:30Goal for one is a batter. Osteen delivers and the fastball, a strike going on.
- 1:18:37Osteen had one play that is now beginning to bother him.
- 1:18:40The speedy Lou Brock topped the ball up along third for a base hit.
- 1:18:44Strike one pitch, fastball, hit in here to right side of field. Davis moving over.
- 1:18:49Under it now and makes the catch.
- 1:18:51Willie is not running 100% by any means, but he was able to move over and get under that one easily.
- 1:18:59Kirkland, Willie Davis slows down. He's still faster than most anyway.
- 1:19:05Here's Lou Brock.
- 1:19:08But to give you an idea of how well Osteen is pitching, he has not allowed a hit since Cardinal.
- 1:19:25He's pitching to Brock now, had the hit that is really hurting him. The top are up along third.
- 1:19:29And there's a bounce of the left of Will. He can't get it.
- 1:19:32The Brock rounds one into center field. A fake turn, but Davis is up to get it.
- 1:19:37And that will bring up Jose Cardinal.
- 1:19:48So Lou Brock has two of the Cardinal hits.
- 1:20:02Got it now, double and one.
- 1:20:10Osteen at the belt has a look over at Brock, checks him a second time, decides you better drive him back.
- 1:20:18Lou is nine for nine in stealing bases, but he does come into the ballgame with a sore foot.
- 1:20:24But just like Davis, sore foot and he's still much faster than most.
- 1:20:29Brock is short lead and Osteen after him again.
- 1:20:38One nothing St. Louis, we're in the sixth inning.
- 1:20:44Osteen left foot on the rubber, now set at the belt, has a look at Brock.
- 1:20:48Another look. And there he goes.
- 1:20:51And the fish is flung on and missed, a throw again low and no way that Will could make a tag.
- 1:20:57Johnny Haller, in his haste to get the ball down there, has gotten the ball on the left side of the bag, on the shortstop side.
- 1:21:05So one time it was Sizemore and this time it was Will who had to try and go back and get the throw and then come in with the tag and it was too late.
- 1:21:21So Lou Brock is ten for ten as he stands at second base, all in one account to Cardinal.
- 1:21:28He swung his bat at that fish just to protect the runner and upset the catcher.
- 1:21:34Brock takes a good lead and the fish is fouled outside of third as Cardinal got one in on the hands and really turned it around.
- 1:21:410-2.
- 1:21:53No balls and two strikes though Osteen.
- 1:21:56One-nothing San Luis, the Cardinals are run on three hits, but Hodges no runs on five hits.
- 1:22:07Haller flinging signs out to Osteen.
- 1:22:12Now Claude at the belt.
- 1:22:14Checks a dancing Brock and comes to play with a breaking ball and that's it fouled outside of third.
- 1:22:29Stay away, ten balls.
- 1:22:37If you're keeping score with us there is a play in the fourth inning that instead of being a field is choice play, if you remember the great play that Grvarkowitz made on a ball hit back of the bag, he went after Cardinal and got him.
- 1:22:51It was technically a field is choice but the choice was removed in the score is judgment that Grvarkowitz could not have gotten Torrey.
- 1:22:59So Joe Torrey is giving a base hit on that play in the fourth inning. Therefore it is four hits instead of three allowed by Osteen.
- 1:23:110-1-2 the count to Jose Cardinal.
- 1:23:14Now the strike two fish breaking ball full foul to George Kissel the third base goes.
- 1:23:19But Cardinal is still there.
- 1:23:27Little action down in the Cardinal bullpen.
- 1:23:30We'll try and pick it off for you.
- 1:23:33We're in the sixth inning, the Cardinals won, the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:23:370-1-2 to Jose Cardinal.
- 1:23:39Blue block at second base.
- 1:23:41One out.
- 1:23:44Strike two fish on the way high.
- 1:23:46Ball one a fastball at sale.
- 1:23:49Nelly Brials perhaps just getting a little work in the Cardinal bullpen.
- 1:23:55Brials the ex-Bronx from Santa Clara has been in ten games.
- 1:24:04He's only worked 22 innings this year.
- 1:24:08The GRA is very high over seven.
- 1:24:121-2 the count to Cardinal.
- 1:24:15Osteen looks at Bronx, clawed to the plate and the fish is hit foul or first slicing to the lower deck.
- 1:24:20And Parker will run out of room.
- 1:24:22The rest of the scoreboard, the auxiliary scoreboard, is three or four rows back in.
- 1:24:27But still 1-2.
- 1:24:32Friday, June 26th, helmet night.
- 1:24:34The San Diego Padres will be here.
- 1:24:37The Cardinals are going to be here tomorrow night and Thursday night.
- 1:24:41The Cubs will be here Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:24:44And the Pirates Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
- 1:24:541-2 to Cardinal.
- 1:24:57Osteen ready.
- 1:24:58Bronx going to third.
- 1:24:59The fish outside to throw to third.
- 1:25:01He's in there.
- 1:25:03The little Brock on a tear has stolen second and third.
- 1:25:07So he's 11 for 11.
- 1:25:11Cardinal has stolen a base in the fourth inning.
- 1:25:14He's 14 out of 15.
- 1:25:17Boy, the birds might fly, but these birds run as well.
- 1:25:27So now the pressure is on the Dodgers.
- 1:25:29The infield up on the right side.
- 1:25:31Grabankiewicz is up.
- 1:25:32Will is about halfway.
- 1:25:35And the Dodgers are getting paced to their own favorite weapon speed.
- 1:25:382-2 fish to Cardinal as the curve fouled away.
- 1:25:46The little Brock with one out single up the middle.
- 1:25:49Stole second, stole third.
- 1:25:54The Cardinals with three steals tonight have stolen 30 out of 42.
- 1:25:59The Dodgers, of course, are the runningest club in the league.
- 1:26:02They've stolen 69 bases.
- 1:26:062-2 to Cardinal.
- 1:26:08Osteen looks at Brock.
- 1:26:09Osteen will wind up where it's the plate.
- 1:26:11Slow curve, whack foul.
- 1:26:13So he's been getting breaking blows.
- 1:26:16Osteen trying not to give him a fastball or he can at least hit it out of the infield.
- 1:26:202-2 to count.
- 1:26:31Dodgers with Osteen and Haller.
- 1:26:33And the size more, Wills Grabankiewicz, Mota Davis Crawford in the outfield.
- 1:26:37The infield is up now.
- 1:26:38Will is right up on the edge.
- 1:26:40Grabankiewicz faking to the bag to hold Brock.
- 1:26:42And the 2-2 pitch to Cardinal on the fists and foul back, second day.
- 1:26:47That was a good pitch.
- 1:26:48Boy, that thing really jumped at his hands.
- 1:26:51Cardinal just did get a piece of it and fouled it back.
- 1:27:01Osteen wandering back of the river.
- 1:27:05One run, four hits for the Cardinals.
- 1:27:07No runs, five hits for the Dodgers.
- 1:27:10One out a runner, a third here in the sixth inning.
- 1:27:122-2 to Cardinal.
- 1:27:17Osteen looks at Brock.
- 1:27:18Into the windup comes to the plate.
- 1:27:20Breaking ball is whacked down the left field line.
- 1:27:22Hooking foul into the lower deck.
- 1:27:25Boy, he's got a feeling he's going a long way.
- 1:27:28Look at the easy swing, and for a 150-pounder, he made the baseball jump.
- 1:27:35I guess when you have the coordination of a Cardinal or in golf a Chichi Rodriguez,
- 1:27:42The fact that he's 150 pounds doesn't mean a thing.
- 1:27:45He can hit it a long way.
- 1:27:48So Cardinal back to the plate.
- 1:27:50Two balls, two strikes to Jose.
- 1:27:53And he has seen a sack full of curveballs up here. That's all Osteen has given him.
- 1:27:592-2.
- 1:28:02Foul on the rubber. Brock down the line from third.
- 1:28:05Fakes coming all the way.
- 1:28:06And the 2-2 breaking ball is it up the middle, face hit.
- 1:28:11So Cardinal was either going to learn how to hit the curveball during that advance
- 1:28:16or never do anything else, because that's all he got.
- 1:28:18Then he finally hit one through for the face hit.
- 1:28:21The run is over. It's 2-0 in St. Louis, and here is Richie Allen.
- 1:28:34Two runs, five hits for the Cardinals. No runs, five hits for the Dodgers.
- 1:28:41Richie Allen has walked and lined out to left fielder Manny Moda.
- 1:28:47Osteen looks at Cardinal, and he has his hands full again with another speedster on the line.
- 1:28:52And Allen takes inside ball one.
- 1:28:55Cardinal stole second in the fourth inning.
- 1:28:57Felt so good about it he tried to steal home.
- 1:29:00And actually had the play beaten if we interpreted Frank Zaccori safe and then outside.
- 1:29:05Zaccori seemed to indicate that Cardinal had it beaten, but he missed the plate.
- 1:29:10Here's the 1-0 pitch. Allen hits a foul off to the right out of play.
- 1:29:14It carries through the second deck.
- 1:29:18So with Brock stealing second and third in the inning,
- 1:29:21now Osteen and Haller have to contend with Cardinal, who has stolen 14 out of 15.
- 1:29:28Maury Wilt has stolen 19 out of 25.
- 1:29:31Willie Davis has stolen 18 out of 23.
- 1:29:34Millie Grabackowich 11 out of 14.
- 1:29:37We've got some fellas who can run.
- 1:29:38Let's do Richie Allen low, and they're all out here.
- 1:29:41So make your plans to see the Cardinals and the Dodgers during the series.
- 1:29:54Two and one to Richie Allen.
- 1:30:00Osteen hands it aside, one out in the sixth inning.
- 1:30:03Two nothing, same lose.
- 1:30:05Here's the 2-1 pitch.
- 1:30:06Breaking ball missed away, ball three.
- 1:30:20Allen closed and right-hand battered.
- 1:30:27Now, Claude Ruddy looks over at first base, comes to the plate.
- 1:30:30Allen takes a strike on the outside corner, three and two.
- 1:30:35Well, Richie Allen has been to bat 190 some odd times, and he has struck out 47.
- 1:30:44So he is a strikeout risk, in a sense, and Cardinal is speedster.
- 1:30:48We'll see if he goes.
- 1:30:51He goes slowly.
- 1:30:52The pitch is one on a miss, and they've got him on up.
- 1:30:55So the Parker, they get him coming back.
- 1:31:04Carter now left first base very slowly.
- 1:31:07His heart wasn't really in it.
- 1:31:09And when Allen won in miss, Jose was about a third of the way to second base.
- 1:31:13So he tried to get back to first, and he was hung out to drive from Allen to Parker.
- 1:31:18However, two hits and two stolen bases, and the Cardinals have a run.
- 1:31:22And at the end of five and a half, it's St. Louis 2 and the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:31:26Are you in favor of improving the air?
- 1:31:29Who isn't?
- 1:31:30But what can I do?
- 1:31:31Well, you can pull in at Union 76 and fill up with new low-lead regular 76 with 80 percent less lead than before.
- 1:31:39Can my car use it?
- 1:31:41Probably.
- 1:31:42Over 50 percent of the cars today can use it with no engine adjustments, no loss of overall performance.
- 1:31:48In fact, major auto manufacturers recommend the low level of lead contained in new low-lead regular 76.
- 1:31:54It meets the 1971 standards set up by the federal and California state governments for anti-pollution regulations.
- 1:32:00Gee, that's great. I'm in favor of improving the air.
- 1:32:04Okay. Spread the word.
- 1:32:06All in favor of improving our air, drive into Union 76.
- 1:32:10And fill up with new low-lead regular 76.
- 1:32:14Available now at over 500 Union 76 stations in California, with more on the way.
- 1:32:20Look for the sign, 80 percent less lead.
- 1:32:23That's the spirit?
- 1:32:25That's the spirit of 76.
- 1:32:33Bottom of the sixth inning with the Cardinals leading the Dodgers 2-0.
- 1:32:37Two runs, five hits, and no errors for the Cardinals.
- 1:32:40No runs, five hits, no errors for the Dodgers.
- 1:32:42Maury Wills, Manny Moda, and Willie Davis.
- 1:32:45The Dodgers had five hits in the first two innings plus.
- 1:32:48And Taylor had slammed the lid on the next eight in a row.
- 1:32:51Wills hits the ground ball to Javier.
- 1:32:53Willie boosts it, recovers, throws and gets it.
- 1:32:56And you can see the difference between a veteran infielder and a youngster,
- 1:33:01because Javier had the ball run up his arm, but he was as unfluff as he could be.
- 1:33:07Corner three and two.
- 1:33:10Well, Ricky Allen has been the bat 190 some odd times, and he has struck out 47.
- 1:33:19So he is a strikeout risk in a sense, and Cardinal's feature, we'll see if he goes.
- 1:33:26He goes slowly.
- 1:33:28The pitch is spun on a miss, and they've got him on up.
- 1:33:30The throw to Parker, they get him coming back.
- 1:33:39Cardinal left first base very slowly.
- 1:33:42His mic wasn't really in it.
- 1:33:44And when Allen spun and missed, Jose was about a third of the way to second base.
- 1:33:48So he tried to get back to first, and he was hung out the drive from Allen to Parker.
- 1:33:53However, two hits and two stolen bases, and the Cardinals have a run.
- 1:33:57And at the end of five and a half, it's St. Louis 2 and the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:34:01Are you in favor of improving the air?
- 1:34:03Who isn't? But what can I do?
- 1:34:06Well, you can pull in at Union 76 and fill up with new low-lead regular 76 with 80 percent less lead than before.
- 1:34:13Can my car use it?
- 1:34:15Probably. Over 50 percent of the cars today can use it with no engine adjustments.
- 1:34:20No loss of overall performance.
- 1:34:22In fact, major auto manufacturers recommend the low level of lead contained in new low-lead regular 76.
- 1:34:29It meets the 1971 standards set up by the federal and California state governments for anti-pollution regulations.
- 1:34:35Gee, that's great. I'm in favor of improving the air.
- 1:34:38Okay. Spread the word.
- 1:34:40All in favor of improving our air, drive into Union 76.
- 1:34:45And fill up with new low-lead regular 76.
- 1:34:48Available now at over 500 Union 76 stations in California.
- 1:34:53More on the way.
- 1:34:55Look for the sign. 80 percent less lead.
- 1:34:57That's the spirit?
- 1:34:59That's the spirit of 76.
- 1:35:01The bottom of the sixth inning with the Cardinals leading the Dodgers 2-0.
- 1:35:11Two runs, five hits, and no errors for the Cardinals. No runs, five hits, no errors for the Dodgers.
- 1:35:16Maury Will, Manny Moda, and Willie Davis.
- 1:35:19The Dodgers had five hits in the first two innings plus.
- 1:35:22And Taylor has slammed the lid on the next eight in a row.
- 1:35:25Wills hits the ground ball to Javier.
- 1:35:27Willie boots it.
- 1:35:28The cover is closed and gets it.
- 1:35:30And you can see the difference between a veteran infielder and a youngster.
- 1:35:35Because Javier had the ball run up his arm, but he was as unclutched as it could be.
- 1:35:40The one down, and here's Manny Moda.
- 1:35:47Moda sacrificed in the first inning and hit into a double play in the third.
- 1:36:01Breaking ball down and away to Moda, ball one.
- 1:36:03Manny checked in tonight at 3-0-4, and he's 0-1.
- 1:36:09Willie Davis on deck.
- 1:36:11Taylor right back with a fast ball at slight down the right field line.
- 1:36:14Coming up on board is Carl Taylor, and in foul ground, one handed.
- 1:36:18Nice play.
- 1:36:20Unfamiliar territory for Taylor, because the one handed of the ball is next in turn.
- 1:36:25Where's the box feet? Where's the railing?
- 1:36:28Two down, and Willie Davis the batter.
- 1:36:31So Chuck Taylor has become a jackal in the hide out there.
- 1:36:34He was in a lot of trouble the first couple of innings, and kaboom,
- 1:36:37he hasn't allowed anybody to get a board since.
- 1:36:40Nine in a row, he has retired.
- 1:36:46There's the ground ball to Javier, and Willie will nail Willie in that fast.
- 1:36:50Boy, the Dodgers go quickly in the sixth inning.
- 1:36:53And at the end of sixth, Cardinals 2, Dodgers nothing.
- 1:36:56Music.
- 1:37:17Riding in the foul weather last night, watched the quiet sun rise this morning.
- 1:37:27All I can think of is it's good to be alive.
- 1:37:30After all, you only go around once in life,
- 1:37:32where you've got to grab for all the dust that you can, even in the beer you drink.
- 1:37:37Quite subtle for that.
- 1:37:40150 to land, we did it, this boat and me almost had enough slips to land.
- 1:37:48Man, they're not kidding when they say when you're out of slips, you're out of beer.
- 1:37:55Slip.
- 1:38:00Slip, Milwaukee and the world.
- 1:38:05Third and sixth inning, two runs, five hits, no errors for the Cardinals, no runs, five hits, no errors for the Dodgers.
- 1:38:11Claude Ostin in a battle with Chuck Taylor, and Taylor now has retired to last 11 in a row.
- 1:38:17He's gotten tougher and tougher.
- 1:38:19Let's go to the seventh, and for more play, here's Jerry.
- 1:38:21All right, buddy, Joe Torrey coming on, third baseman batting, home to the order.
- 1:38:26And an infield hit rounded into a double play.
- 1:38:28So Torrey, one for two tonight.
- 1:38:31Here's Ostin to the line-up, man.
- 1:38:33That's going to be in for a base hit, might go through, one bounce to the wall.
- 1:38:39Torrey around, takes the second, and he's in there with a planned up double.
- 1:38:43So Torrey opens up the seventh, and he was a double to left center field.
- 1:38:48Number six for the Cardinals, and here's Carl Taylor, the right fielder.
- 1:38:53He has stuck out twice tonight.
- 1:38:56Simmons on deck, and Javier to follow.
- 1:38:59The Cardinals using Carl Taylor in right field, and Chuck Taylor is the pitcher.
- 1:39:05Carl Taylor last year was at Pittsburgh.
- 1:39:08Now Torrey's at second base.
- 1:39:11A leadoff double here in the seventh.
- 1:39:18Barker moves in at first base in case the Bunch should be on with Taylor up there.
- 1:39:21The pitch on the way, in a little low for ball, one ball, no strike.
- 1:39:26The Cardinals lead two to nothing, and they might be playing for an extra run now.
- 1:39:29We'll see.
- 1:39:31Krabarka wouldn't stay back even with the bag, but Parker was up a step or two.
- 1:39:34Now he's back even with the bag.
- 1:39:38Ball one count, Taylor waiting.
- 1:39:40Ostin checking time.
- 1:39:44Todd goes out of the stretch.
- 1:39:46Now the look back at the runner and the pitch on the way, it's a little low for ball.
- 1:39:50Sizemore was breaking for the bag that time, so perhaps Goodogger's had a play on.
- 1:39:55And they did not go through with it.
- 1:39:57Ball two to Taylor, two balls, no strike.
- 1:40:07Two and 0 to count.
- 1:40:13Now once again, Ostin checking.
- 1:40:15Torrey away from second base in the fifth to Taylor.
- 1:40:17It's in for strike two and one.
- 1:40:20Two balls, one strike to Carl Taylor, batting 2-0-9.
- 1:40:23One-0-9 runs about it in.
- 1:40:31Now he's backed out with the third base coach, George Kitzel.
- 1:40:35Good foot throw on the first base line.
- 1:40:39Two and one, Cardinals leading two to nothing.
- 1:40:42Ostin, that again delivers.
- 1:40:44Curve is in there, good pitch around the knees, strike two.
- 1:40:47Two and two to Taylor.
- 1:40:51Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:40:58Torrey short lead.
- 1:41:02And once again, Ostin checking with Tom Holler.
- 1:41:06Right hand batter waiting.
- 1:41:09The 2-2 pitch, full run, I missed strike three.
- 1:41:11Stuck him out for the third time.
- 1:41:14Now let's pause for station identification.
- 1:41:16This is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
- 1:41:19I'm in the Bay Bowl.
- 1:41:21Be around tonight following the Dodger-Cardinals game,
- 1:41:23and we'll stick pins in my Bay Bowl Cincinnati Red Sox on K-F-I Los Angeles.
- 1:41:32The catcher Ted Simmons at bat is lying the short toss up.
- 1:41:36Well Simmons, home for two.
- 1:41:39We're in the top of the seventh inning, one on and one out.
- 1:41:42Now Ostin goes out of the stretch to the right hand batter.
- 1:41:45He's over the screen, and it is strike one.
- 1:41:49Nice crowd out tonight.
- 1:41:50We hope you can make your plans for the year tomorrow when the Cardinals play the second game of the series.
- 1:41:55Mike Torres against Joe Mueller.
- 1:41:57And on Thursday night, Steve Carlson, the big left hander, against Don Sutton.
- 1:42:05A big home stand for the Dodgers here, beginning now with the Cardinals out in front, two-nothing.
- 1:42:10The Dodgers bat on the bottom of the inning is Starlet Parker, Verbacca, Woodland, and Salford.
- 1:42:14Now again, the look-pick-off play throwback, and it's not in time.
- 1:42:18Torrey gets in ahead of the throw that's eyes more.
- 1:42:26One-one to count.
- 1:42:33One out, one on.
- 1:42:34Torrey open the inning with a double.
- 1:42:35He's at second base.
- 1:42:42Strike one count.
- 1:42:48Now again, Ostin getting a sign from Haller.
- 1:42:51Right hand batter waiting, the pitch on the way.
- 1:42:53Ground ball to the left side.
- 1:42:54It's torched up.
- 1:42:55Wills drives the runner back, throws the clock in time, and Sillentot drowning out the short.
- 1:43:01Throw away now.
- 1:43:02The batter will be Javier, lying to left and grounded the short.
- 1:43:05Time's up now.
- 1:43:06Javier at bat, Maxwell on deck, and manager Walter Austin going out the top to Ostin and Haller.
- 1:43:11It might be they will be talking about walking Javier and pitching to Maxwell.
- 1:43:18After Maxwell comes the pitcher.
- 1:43:20So with the runner at second base, Austin now having a discussion with the pitcher and the catcher.
- 1:43:29We'll see the result of the meeting in a moment.
- 1:43:34Javier is lying to left and grounded out.
- 1:43:36Maxwell is grounded out inside the right field.
- 1:43:38Javier is batting 238.
- 1:43:40Maxwell is batting 178.
- 1:43:4260 points difference.
- 1:43:44Neither has a home run.
- 1:43:46Javier has driven in 15 runs and Maxwell has driven in five.
- 1:43:49They're going to walk him.
- 1:43:51So he'll be walking and Maxwell will be the hitter and we'll see if the Cardinals now counter with a pitch hitter.
- 1:43:56That perhaps was one of the things that Walter Austin thought about when he went out there.
- 1:44:00That he may not get Maxwell, he might get somebody else.
- 1:44:04This will be the third walk given up by Ostin.
- 1:44:08An intentional walk and Maxwell in the on-deck circle is going to come up.
- 1:44:12Apparently he's walking toward the place now.
- 1:44:15Ball three and here's ball four.
- 1:44:17So now Maxwell will come on and the pitcher Chuck Taylor comes out on deck.
- 1:44:24So the Cardinals have two on with two out.
- 1:44:28And the batter Maxwell has grounded out and flat out.
- 1:44:33The Cardinals lead in the ball game two to nothing.
- 1:44:45All right, Ostin ready to go.
- 1:44:47Working to Maxwell with a shortstop batting in the eighth spot.
- 1:44:51Dorian second.
- 1:44:52Javier at first.
- 1:44:53The pitch is low.
- 1:44:54Pops out of the glove to north bank.
- 1:44:55One ball no strikes to Javier.
- 1:44:58The pitcher Chuck Taylor on deck.
- 1:45:08One-all to count.
- 1:45:14Now again the luck of Ostin checking the runner.
- 1:45:17Pitch on the way.
- 1:45:18Maxwell at the line drive base at the left field.
- 1:45:20Here comes throwing around third.
- 1:45:22Going to the plate.
- 1:45:23It's going to be close.
- 1:45:24He is safe but the ball gets by Haller.
- 1:45:27Another run in and he's safe.
- 1:45:32Lota made a perfect throw to the plate but it skidded through Haller.
- 1:45:35Two runs score.
- 1:45:39And on the throw to the plate Maxwell takes second.
- 1:45:43The show was well ahead of Torrey.
- 1:45:46But the ball didn't hop right for Haller.
- 1:45:48It got between his legs.
- 1:45:50And Torrey is able to score.
- 1:45:53Javier follows and he scores as the ball is under Torrey.
- 1:45:58And then rolled off to the right of the plate of fifth.
- 1:46:01Ostin picked it up and tried to make a dive at Javier but too late.
- 1:46:05So the Cargills get two more runs and lead four to nothing as two score on that play.
- 1:46:10Javier heads up all the way from third base.
- 1:46:16So Maxwell gets a run battered in.
- 1:46:18Taylor is the batter now.
- 1:46:20Here's the look at the pitch on the way to Taylor.
- 1:46:23Swing and a miss for a strike.
- 1:46:30So the Cargills pick up two more.
- 1:46:33And it looked like Modus throw had him dead.
- 1:46:37But it got away from Haller and in the score was Torrey.
- 1:46:40And then when the ball got by an error was charged to allow the other one to come in.
- 1:46:48And it's great. Here's the swing and a miss strike two.
- 1:46:58Haller is given an error for the second run only, not the first run.
- 1:47:05Here's the pitch on the way to Taylor.
- 1:47:07Curve strike three called and the ending is over.
- 1:47:09But the Cargills get a two big run.
- 1:47:12There were two hits, one error, and one left on.
- 1:47:16And in the score at the end of six and a half on the play, Cargills four dodges nothing.
- 1:47:22If you're in a breakfast slump, then Torrey the score.
- 1:47:25And when the ball really passed Haller, it got away from home plate.
- 1:47:30Haller was on the ground and here came Javier right behind him in the score.
- 1:47:35And now Haller was charged with an error.
- 1:47:41Alright, the Dodgers ready to go on the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:47:45With Parker, Drabachowicz, and Crawford against Chuck Taylor,
- 1:47:50who was a little wobbly at the start with the pedal down.
- 1:47:52Now there's a swing going. A ground ball, punch to short.
- 1:47:55Maxwell across in time and it's won out.
- 1:47:58Twelve in a row now, retired by Taylor.
- 1:48:01And he's made it look easy lately.
- 1:48:04The Dodgers had five hits in their first ten hitters.
- 1:48:10Were unable to score and now have not been able to get anybody on.
- 1:48:13Drabachowicz's bat has singled and popped up.
- 1:48:16So Chuck Taylor is going to work.
- 1:48:18The crowd tonight is 17,111.
- 1:48:22Here's a curve strike and it is 0-1.
- 1:48:26Seven innings.
- 1:48:28Cargills four, the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:48:33Here's the putt of third base side.
- 1:48:35Here's Torrey quickly, bare hand pick up.
- 1:48:37Throw in time. Good play by Torrey.
- 1:48:42Joe Torrey, who has not played third base in the majors until just a couple of weeks ago,
- 1:48:48made a major league play on that punch by Drabachowicz.
- 1:48:51Came in with a bare hand pick up and throw in time.
- 1:48:54Torrey has always had a good arm when he was catching.
- 1:48:58Oh, he made a fine play there.
- 1:49:01Here's Crawford at bat with two outs in the seventh.
- 1:49:04Taylor to the lineup and the pitch to Willie.
- 1:49:06Full on and missed strike one. Crawford batting 259.
- 1:49:16Torrey is playing third so that the Cargills can use Simmons behind the plate.
- 1:49:21There's a change up. Full on and missed strike two.
- 1:49:24And also because Shannon is still not ready to play.
- 1:49:28If this combination works as is and Shannon gets ready to play,
- 1:49:32he can go back to the outfield of Torrey if he's playing well at third.
- 1:49:35Now the pitch. Low for ball.
- 1:49:45One ball, two strikes. Crawford waiting.
- 1:49:51Now Taylor ready to go. The wind is in the pitch on the way.
- 1:49:54Full on and hit foul. Lost third out of play.
- 1:49:56A ball and two strikes to Willie Crawford.
- 1:50:04The Pirates lead the Giants 3-0 there in the sixth inning.
- 1:50:07And Maritsov pitching there against Blass.
- 1:50:12In between the high pop fly off to the left side.
- 1:50:15Down in the corner is blue block and foul territory.
- 1:50:18And makes the catch for the after retire of the side.
- 1:50:21So Crawford fouls to Brock. They're all out in the seventh inning.
- 1:50:24Three up and three down. And the score at the end of seventh inning to play.
- 1:50:28The Cardinals four and the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:50:31Well friends when you're listening to our broadcast there's generally a book
- 1:50:35close at hand that can help you find help fast.
- 1:50:38That would be the Yellow Pages of course.

- 1:50:45It's your hometown guides of the stores and merchants who are there to help you.

- 1:50:59You can check their advertisements for such facts as how long they've been in business.
- 1:51:03Or perhaps an indication of the merchandise they carry.
- 1:51:06Store hours and other information you may want to know.
- 1:51:09Plus you'll always find a phone number so you can call first
- 1:51:13and find out whether they have what you want before you get down there.
- 1:51:17The Yellow Pages are published for just about every town and city in the United States.
- 1:51:22So no matter where you are you can pick them up and find help fast.
- 1:51:27Locally, in the Yellow Pages.
- 1:51:36Moving along into the eighth inning of the ball game.
- 1:51:39Cargo's coming to bat. Let's go back to playing.
- 1:51:42Here's Vint.
- 1:51:43Alright, Jerry. Eighth inning.
- 1:51:44Ford and Othing Sandler as Claude Osteen.
- 1:51:47Who has been a hot pitcher but he's been outfished.
- 1:51:50He'll start it off.
- 1:52:02Osteen ready to work now to the leadoff man, Lou Brock, who's had a couple of base sets.
- 1:52:07And Brock has scored two runs.
- 1:52:10Brock gets the ground ball, pulled it down to Sizemore and said we'll throw him out one away.
- 1:52:16It has been Cardinal base running that has led to the Dodger downfall tonight.
- 1:52:21It was Brock's speed that set up a run in the first inning.
- 1:52:24Then Brock single and stole two bases and scored in the sixth.
- 1:52:28And then Joe Torre and Julian Javier both scoring on a very good throw by Manimoda.
- 1:52:35The Cardinals have not been flying around, they have been running around.
- 1:52:39And the batter is Jose Cardinal who takes the site.
- 1:52:43Cardinal perhaps set the key of the evening that the Cardinals were going to run when he was thrown out trying to steal all.
- 1:52:50Well, there's a few things that have worked against St. Louis tonight.
- 1:52:53Strike one fastball, a sinker, strike two, 0-2.
- 1:52:57For Osteen, he knows he's finished.
- 1:52:59He figures to be gone.
- 1:53:01He's due to bat third at the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:53:04So this makes it a very tough inning for him to pitch, knowing he's coming out.
- 1:53:08The strike two pitch, fastball high, Cardinal held up 1-2.
- 1:53:17Dodgers swept the three in St. Louis, so the Cardinals kind of nail one from the Dodgers.
- 1:53:24Cardinal waiting.
- 1:53:27Now it feels spread out, really fanned out on Jose.
- 1:53:32Now Osteen ready and there's one two pitch on the way.
- 1:53:35Fastball in there, strike three, called.
- 1:53:39So it is interesting to note that when Cardinal came up to the plate with a runner at third in the sixth inning and won out,
- 1:53:46he saw nothing but curveballs.
- 1:53:48Breaking ball, breaking ball, breaking ball, breaking ball, and he hit one into center field for a base hit for the run.
- 1:53:53But now when he came up with the bases empty, he got sinkers and fastballs and struck out.
- 1:53:59So it shows you the difference in pitching with a man on third and with the bases empty.
- 1:54:03Here's Richie Allen, sinker for a strike.
- 1:54:19Next pitch fouled away, going two.
- 1:54:31Half a dozen strikeouts for Osteen, but he's down 4-0 in the eighth.
- 1:54:37Richie Allen waiting and there's strike two pitch on the way.
- 1:54:40Fastball outside, ball one.
- 1:54:42When the Dodgers hit in the bottom of the eighth, they are due to send up head size more Tom Haller and called Osteen's spot.
- 1:54:51Both end busy backup.
- 1:54:53One two pitch on the way, change high.
- 1:54:55A little curveball that stayed up, two and two.
- 1:54:59Richie Allen walked, lined out to left and struck out.
- 1:55:14Here's the two-two pitch on the way.
- 1:55:16Breaking ball grounded foul, back of the heels of third base coach George Kissel.
- 1:55:22Two and two.
- 1:55:2713,111 out here on a beautiful evening.
- 1:55:30Hope you make your plans to be with us during the home stand.
- 1:55:32The Cardinals tomorrow night and Thursday night.
- 1:55:43Here's the two-two pitch on the way.
- 1:55:45Breaking ball grounded deep at third.
- 1:55:47Fair ball and it's off Ravarkowitz's glove.
- 1:55:50So Allen is safely aboard.
- 1:55:53Ravarkowitz, at ease field is the ball.
- 1:55:56Would have been almost on the grass back of third.
- 1:55:59And if they gave Joe Torrey a hit as they did, there's no other way but to give Allen a hit on that one because
- 1:56:04no he really had to go deep to even come close to getting it.
- 1:56:09So it's a base hit for Richie Allen and here's Joe Torrey.
- 1:56:17Four runs, eight hits for the Cardinals.
- 1:56:19No runs, five hits for the Dodgers.
- 1:56:21And if you look at it in the proper perspective, the Dodgers have not had a hit since Will Singleton the third inning.
- 1:56:27Taylor's retired 14 in a row.
- 1:56:29Pitch in the dirt saved by Hallerball.
- 1:56:32So the Dodgers were chipping away at Taylor for the first two innings plus.
- 1:56:36They had five hits but no runs and boy has he slammed the door.
- 1:56:4214 in a row through the seventh inning.
- 1:56:501-0 to Joe Torrey.
- 1:56:52Host team ready.
- 1:56:53Here he comes low again in the dirt, ball two.
- 1:57:00The pitching pattern changes drastically when you think about it here in St. Louis.
- 1:57:05In St. Louis, you don't want the men to hit the ball on the ground.
- 1:57:09With the Astrosurf, that baseball goes like a startled rabbit.
- 1:57:13So out here, you just as soon have the hits all down on the ground with somebody like Torrey.
- 1:57:20Host team has been low where you might want to be hitting the ball in the air in St. Louis.
- 1:57:24Breaking ball is one-notted missed, 0-1.
- 1:57:332-1 to Joe Torrey.
- 1:57:35Two out on the eighth inning, 4-0 St. Louis.
- 1:57:422-1 pitch to Joe.
- 1:57:44Steen's fastball that hit foul outside of third and down the line, 2-2.
- 1:57:53Joe Torrey started the night at 2-99 and he's 2-3.
- 1:57:58Infield single and a double.
- 1:58:13Host team at the belt and the 2-2 pitch, Kerrball got him swinging and down goes Torrey.
- 1:58:19That's seven strikeouts for Claude Host team, but it is no bomb to his injury because he's down and out.
- 1:58:26No runs to hit a man left, but at the end of seven and a half innings Cardinals 4 dodges nothing.
- 1:58:32There's lots of talk about cleaner air these days.
- 1:58:35Lots of talk, not much action.
- 1:58:37It's one thing to keep bringing up the problem and it's quite another thing to bring up the solutions.
- 1:58:41The Union Oil Research Laboratory offers you an early and effective solution.
- 1:58:45A high-performance regular gasoline with 80% less lead than their previous regular.
- 1:58:50New low-lead regular 76.
- 1:58:53Make no mistake, this gasoline is no leaded down weakling that's riding the crest of an anti-pollution wave.
- 1:58:59In place of lead, the scientists at the lab added more than enough gasoline stock with clear high-octane gasoline molecules.
- 1:59:06To say nothing of the five proven engine cleaners, more than half the cars today can run on new low-lead regular 76.
- 1:59:13They can run on it and reduce pollution without reducing overall performance.
- 1:59:17So how about it?
- 1:59:18All in favor of improving our air, drive into Union 76.
- 1:59:22New low-lead regular 76, available at over 500 stations in California with more on the way.
- 1:59:28Look for the sign, 80% less lead.
- 1:59:31It's another example of the strict...
- 1:59:37Bottom of the eighth inning, the Cardinals four runs, eight hits, no errors.
- 1:59:41The Dodgers no runs, five hits and one error.
- 1:59:44Chuck Taylor has retired 14 consecutive batters since the third inning single by Maury Wills.
- 1:59:51And he'll now face Ted Sizemore, Tom Haller, and we'll see about Osteen's spot.
- 1:59:57Taylor into the windup and the big right-hander's breaking ball is high and inside, ball one.
- 2:00:03They're waving a towel at Carl Taylor in right field.
- 2:00:07They want to bring him up, he's playing kind of deep.
- 2:00:10And he does get that.
- 2:00:12The pitch, inside and high, ball two.
- 2:00:15Chuck Taylor is making his first start, so the Dodgers are hoping he'll tire in the later going.
- 2:00:24The next run, a strike, two and one.
- 2:00:30Taylor has worked only 30 innings prior to tonight, and he's pitched a strong seven.
- 2:00:35Two one-fifths, low, ball three.
- 2:00:39With his 14 consecutive outs, it should be noted that he has not walked a batter.
- 2:00:47So he's behind the first time in a while, a three one-fifths.
- 2:00:51Inside, ball four.
- 2:00:53That gets him to making some noise here now.
- 2:00:56Billy Muffet, the pitching coach, goes over to talk to Red Chandy.
- 2:01:00And the battle will be Tom Haller.
- 2:01:02He's a little bit of a margin for error, however, he's leading 4-0.
- 2:01:09Sal Campisi and Ted Abernathy throwing in the Cardinal bullpen.
- 2:01:14The Dodgers have a long way to go.
- 2:01:18Haller has singled and flied out.
- 2:01:22That ball, a strike on the outside corner.
- 2:01:26Now Billy McCool gets up to join Ted Abernathy and Sal Campisi stop throwing.
- 2:01:33Now the strike one pitch to Haller, low, one and one.
- 2:01:37Normally, a manager looks for two things when a pitcher tires.
- 2:01:42If he's basically a low ball pitcher, and Taylor is, his stuff will start to come up.
- 2:01:46And of course you always look for velocity or lack of it.
- 2:01:50Haller takes low again, ball two.
- 2:01:52Here comes the Redhead, the Red Chandy, so that's a mound to see whether Chuck Haller is hiring or not.
- 2:02:04The boos you hear in the background are directed, certainly not personally, just at the state of things here at Dodger Stadium.
- 2:02:11Cardinal's four, Dodger's nothing.
- 2:02:13Chandy's one of the more popular men in the game.
- 2:02:16With the fact that he's been sitting on a 4-0 lead, they decided to get on him a little bit.
- 2:02:21The Redhead goes cutting back to the Cardinal dugout.
- 2:02:25Pete Michelson and Fred Norman are throwing in the Dodger bullpen.
- 2:02:31And Red goes down the steps and back into the dugout.
- 2:02:35Two and one to count to Tom Haller.
- 2:02:37Taylor delivers and it's a little foul off third.
- 2:02:40Racing over is Corey. It's doubtful Joe will not have a play.
- 2:02:46First row of seats behind the auxiliary scoreboard just beyond the Dodger dugout.
- 2:02:50And the count's two and two.
- 2:02:52Tom Haller waiting on the play, two balls and two strikes.
- 2:03:06They're not going to hold sides more.
- 2:03:08Ricky Allen is off the bat.
- 2:03:10Taylor delivers and it's foul back.
- 2:03:13Haller single down the right field line in the second inning and flies to center in the fifth.
- 2:03:22Dodgers had five hits in the first two innings plus which did not score.
- 2:03:26And then Taylor retired 14 in a row before walking sides more here in the eighth.
- 2:03:31Two-two pitch, round ball down to Javier.
- 2:03:34He goes to the shortstop, Maxville.
- 2:03:36He goes to first, double play.
- 2:03:47Double play, four, six, three.
- 2:03:49So two out of the eighth inning.
- 2:03:51Now let's see.
- 2:03:52Milt Sudeikis has reached the on-deck circle.
- 2:03:56He's being called back.
- 2:04:03And then John Joshua gets up and goes to the bat rack.
- 2:04:07So the young outfielder hitting 255 and he's been in only 19 games.
- 2:04:12Joshua will come up and bat against Chuck Taylor.
- 2:04:18They wanted Sudeikis as a possible long ball threat.
- 2:04:22But if Haller hits into a double play, he's going to go back to hoping for singles.
- 2:04:26Here comes John Joshua coming up.
- 2:04:37The Dodgers have hit into two double plays tonight.
- 2:04:39They are being beaten over the head on double play ball.
- 2:04:44Yesterday, or I should say Sunday, the Dodgers hit into three double plays in Pittsburgh.
- 2:04:50The night before they hit into two double plays and a triple play.
- 2:04:55The last three games, the Dodgers have hit into seven double plays and a triple play.
- 2:05:03It's pretty hard to do any scoring on that time.
- 2:05:06There's a comeback dropped by Taylor who then throws him out.
- 2:05:09So Joshua, first ball swinging is gone.
- 2:05:12And so are the Dodgers in the eighth and at the end of eighth.
- 2:05:15The Dodgers are in the fourth and fourth.
- 2:05:25Taylor and Halle feels good when you've been on the World.
- 2:05:28Taylor and Halle feels good.
- 2:05:32The old places and faces you've missed are there.
- 2:05:35And you know it well can be.
- 2:05:40There are stories to hear, stories to tell, and laughs to laugh.
- 2:05:48And all the time the glass will get filled and emptied and filled again, it will slip.
- 2:05:56Oh, they'll be good times, just so times.
- 2:05:59The kind you grab for because you know one time around is all you get.
- 2:06:03And you've got to grab for all the just so you can.
- 2:06:06The beer you drink, why settle for less?
- 2:06:10When you're out of slips, you're out of beer.
- 2:06:16Slips, Milwaukee and the World.
- 2:06:21Through eight innings, a total draw in the ballgame.
- 2:06:23The Cardinals four runs, eight hits and no errors.
- 2:06:26The Dodgers no runs, five hits and one error.
- 2:06:29And Pete Mickelson is asked to pitch the night inning for Claude Osteen.
- 2:06:33Had come in with a six game winning streak.
- 2:06:37And although he struck out seven and walked but two and one of the two intentionally.
- 2:06:43He started off with his problems in the very first inning when Lou Brock topped the ball up along third base and beat it out.
- 2:06:50Cardinal hit a ground ball under Grabarcovich's glove and just off the fingertips of Wills and had died on the grass and left.
- 2:06:57And he's a speedster.
- 2:06:59So Brock was able to take third and Cardinal took second.
- 2:07:03Richie Allen walked to load the bases and Joe Torre hit into a double play.
- 2:07:08The run scoring and then a few moments later Cardinal was thrown out trying to steal.
- 2:07:12So actually a break or so on Osteen could have survived the first inning easily.
- 2:07:16Then in the sixth inning, Brock singled and stole second and then stole third and came home on a base hit.
- 2:07:23And in the seventh inning two runs scored on a base hit to left despite a good throw by Manny Moda when Hallow was unable to hold onto it.
- 2:07:31And Tommy was knocked flat by Torre.
- 2:07:35And as he was sprawled in the dirt Javier came right in behind Torre.
- 2:07:41So at first glance you think of four nothing the Cardinals have had it easy but Osteen didn't pitch that bad a game at all.
- 2:07:46Now we're in the ninth and Mickelson is pitching to right fielder Carl Taylor who fouls it away.
- 2:07:53The Dodgers however looked as if they were going to chase Chuck Taylor right in the beginning.
- 2:07:58And boy did he apply the breaks in the third inning.
- 2:08:00The Dodgers hit a dry spell of 14 in a row and then when they finally did give Manny Moda a double play ball wrecked them.
- 2:08:09Next pitch low and away one and one to Carl Taylor.
- 2:08:12Boy that's remarkable though to suddenly realize that the Dodgers have hit into seven double plays and a triple play in their last three games.
- 2:08:24The one one pitch on the way good breaking ball strike two.
- 2:08:27One and two to Carl Taylor.
- 2:08:28He's had a rough night.
- 2:08:30He's in there because he goes against left handers and all Osteen did was strike him out three times.
- 2:08:38It's really amazing how you try to out think this game isn't it.
- 2:08:42The one two pitch side armor ground ball to Parker.
- 2:08:44West has it goes to the back for the odds one away.
- 2:08:47So Carl Taylor struck out three times against the left handers and ground dot against the right hander.
- 2:08:52Let's pause for station identification.
- 2:08:54This is a Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 2:09:00This is Dave Hall.
- 2:09:01We're here every night nine to midnight on 50,000 watt clear channel KFI Los Angeles.
- 2:09:11That's Simmons about her lined out popped up and grounded out over three and he'll turn around and hit left handed now.
- 2:09:18Nicholson ready and he delivers that one over for a strike.
- 2:09:22Nicholson has just about made it back now from being floored by hepatitis and spring training.
- 2:09:27It's been a long hard Jewish climb but he is just about caught up with the league like one pitch.
- 2:09:34Long ball one on and miss and always gives the crowd a thrill not to say what it has done to young Ted Simmons.
- 2:09:43He almost fell out of his uniform on that one.
- 2:09:47Ted Grinning said something to Tommy Howard.
- 2:09:50Of course Nicholson played at Tulsa Cardinal Farm Club like do that fastball line drive.
- 2:09:57They said no one do fastball and that's the thing to tell you.
- 2:10:03Nine hits to the Cardinals and the battle will be Julian Javier.
- 2:10:15Javier was robbed of a hit and in fact he hit the ball hard twice and had nothing to show for it.
- 2:10:21Then they intentionally walked him in the seventh inning and he scored when Haller was flattened by Joe Torre.
- 2:10:29If you have a good memory you might remember a classic case of a catcher being flattened at the plate.
- 2:10:35Breaking ball is swung on and missed and that flat curve went right out the window and Javier went after it.
- 2:10:42If you can go well suddenly it's way back.
- 2:10:45The Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees in the World Series and Charlie Keller knocked the great early Lombardi flat.
- 2:10:54When the ball rolled away another Yankee scored it might have been Joe DiMaggio but they always talk about it as Lombardi's sleeve when he was actually just decked at the plate.
- 2:11:04Well Haller suffered that indignity in the seventh inning.
- 2:11:07Strike one-fifths, Javier looks at a big floater that's low one-on-one.
- 2:11:13He's just fun to watch. Well not to hit again but he's fun to watch.
- 2:11:18As you said on the pregame show, well I have such a crazy motion.
- 2:11:28By the posters, Poster Washington, Steve Mickelson.
- 2:11:34Javier waiting who he has out of the shore to one hopper lined to left and was more intentionally.
- 2:11:41One-one-fifths, fast ball hit down the right field line.
- 2:11:45Crawford racing to the line makes the catch and they're going to double up the kid at first base easily.
- 2:11:50Ed Simmons is on his way to third. He must have thought they were two outs.
- 2:11:54Now he knows differently.
- 2:11:56So the young catcher is embarrassed he's doubled up nine-three Crawford to Parker.
- 2:12:01No runs, he hits, nobody left and at the end of eight-and-a-half, the Cardinal four dodges nothing.
- 2:12:06The other day, Farmer John mentioned he was partial to the double play and naturally we thought he was talking baseball.
- 2:12:12But what he meant was the shopper picking up one of his products in the meat department
- 2:12:16then pushing her cart over to the delicatessen section for some of his lunches, Farmer John lunch and meat.
- 2:12:22Some people it seems don't realize that Farmer John is a complete variety of lunch and meat.
- 2:12:27Farmer John sliced cooked ham, Farmer John liverwurst, all meat ballona and many others.
- 2:12:33They're as fine and fresh as you can buy because Farmer John makes them with fresh eastern corn-fed pork.
- 2:12:40Fresh, fresh right here in the west and fresh, lean, juicy, homegrown beef.
- 2:12:45And he uses only natural herbs and spices, never any artificial seasonings or flavoring.
- 2:12:51Like other Farmer John products, all his lunch and meats won gold medals at the California State Fair.
- 2:12:58So the next time you shop, pick up a package or two of Farmer John lunch and meat.
- 2:13:03Take it from me, you like a Farmer John.
- 2:13:25Bottom of the ninth inning, here at Dodger Stadium, Ward and other things, St. Louis.
- 2:13:29And Mr. Chuck Taylor has been sitting on the Dodgers ever since the third inning.
- 2:13:34Maury Wills is the last Dodger to get a base hit and that was leading off the third.
- 2:13:39Taylor Walker sides more to break a string of 14 in the eighth inning.
- 2:13:44First pitch, low ball on.
- 2:13:47Wills Moda Davis, bottom of the ninth, fours, dips St. Louis.
- 2:13:56And that's one over for a strike.
- 2:14:00Count one and one.
- 2:14:02So the Dodgers who have won 18 and lost but 10 on the road, 200 to 500 at home and they're down in the first game.
- 2:14:08There's a one hopper backhanded by Richie Allen.
- 2:14:11Oh, what a play.
- 2:14:12Richie takes it over to the back, one away.
- 2:14:16A fine play by Richie Allen, the backhand, a low line drive that exploded.
- 2:14:23Short hop backhand has made it look easy and the batter, Manny Moda.
- 2:14:33Somebody getting on him, one of his teammates from the Cardinals dugout and Richie grinning and now waiting at the plate.
- 2:14:39And here's the pitch to Moda.
- 2:14:41That's taken for a strike.
- 2:14:44Chuck Taylor has been queening and pressing the Dodgers here in the ninth inning.
- 2:14:49One man to get a board since the third.
- 2:14:51There's a chapter to Javier.
- 2:14:53Bully has this one that will do it for Moda.
- 2:14:55Two down.
- 2:15:02Despite the walk given to Sizemore, Haller followed by hitting it with double play.
- 2:15:08And you go in the third inning and despite the single by Wills, Moda hit it with double play.
- 2:15:14So since the second inning, Taylor has pitched to the minimum number of batters.
- 2:15:21If he gets Willie Davis, he will have faced only 21 batters in the last seven innings.
- 2:15:27The pitch over for a strike, 0-1.
- 2:15:31So the Dodgers were unable to strike early and quick and now they're just about done with two out of the ninth.
- 2:15:38Strike one pitch to Davis, a ground ball to Javier.
- 2:15:41He has it and that's that.
- 2:15:44Chuck Taylor got tougher and tougher and better and better and the Dodgers went down the drain.
- 2:15:51Four runs, nine hits and no errors for the Cardinals.
- 2:15:55And Chuck Taylor, who had his only shutout in the big leagues last year against the Dodgers,
- 2:16:01comes right back to do the same for the first time this year.
- 2:16:04It was his first start and it was his first away game and he sure made the most of it.
- 2:16:09For the Dodgers, nothing more than a small whimper of protest.
- 2:16:12No runs, five hits and one error.
- 2:16:15Hosting the loser is eight and five, eight and 13 lifetimes.
- 2:16:20And Chuck Taylor is the winner.
- 2:16:22Taylor now is two and one.
- 2:16:24Tomorrow night, Mike Torres and Joe Mueller warm up 740 game time at eight.
- 2:16:28Sure hope he makes you plans to be out here with us if he possibly can.
- 2:16:32Once again, the final score, Cardinals four, Dodgers nothing.
- 2:16:37Now this is the end of the show along with Jerry Doggett inviting you to stay tuned for the fourth game show coming right up.
