- 0:00You may have heard it in church, and you've seen it online. Maybe even said it yourself.
- 0:07It sounds biblical, but is it? Welcome to Jesus Never Said That,
- 0:12a special series from Have Faith, Let It Begin.
- 0:15I'm Angel Santana, and together, we're going to go beyond the cliches,
- 0:19the quotes, and assumptions to discover what God's Word actually says.
- 0:24So grab your Bible and bring your questions, because Have Faith,
- 0:27Let It Begin starts right now.
- 0:35Welcome to Half-Faith Let It Begin. This is Ariel Santana.
- 0:39Can you believe I'm seven years old already? I'm old enough now to introduce my dad.
- 0:45Ladies and gentlemen, your host, my dad, Angel Santana.
- 0:52Two thousand came and a spark was lit. A testimony raw, it wouldn't quit.
- 0:57His mother's voice, a guiding thread.
- 1:26Welcome back, everybody. And today's saying may be one of the most recognizable
- 1:30phrases in modern Christianity.
- 1:33Hate the sin. Love the sinner.
- 1:36You probably heard it. Maybe you said it. And at first glance,
- 1:40it sounds pretty reasonable.
- 1:42Sin matters. People matter.
- 1:44So hate the sin. Love the person.
- 1:48There's one problem. Hate the sin, love the sinner is not a Bible verse.
- 1:54Jesus never said those words. Now, that doesn't automatically mean every idea
- 1:59behind the phrase is wrong.
- 2:01Scripture obviously teaches that sin is serious, and Scripture absolutely teaches us to love people.
- 2:12But today, I want to ask you a deeper question. Is this phrase actually helping
- 2:17us love people the way Jesus taught us to love them.
- 2:21Because sometimes a sentence can sound biblical and still shape our attitude
- 2:27in a way Jesus never intended. So here's the heart check.
- 2:32Let's start with ourselves. Think about the last time somebody else or somebody
- 2:37else's behavior really bothered you.
- 2:39Maybe you thought they shouldn't be doing that.
- 2:43They should know better. That's wrong. Now here's the uncomfortable question.
- 2:48How quickly do I notice somebody else's sin compared to my own?
- 2:53Because it's incredibly easy to become an expert on everybody else's shortcomings?
- 2:58We can identify their pride, their anger, their choices, their behavior, their mistakes.
- 3:06Meanwhile, God may be trying to deal with something in us.
- 3:12So today's heart check is simple. Am I more concerned with correcting other
- 3:17people or allowing Jesus to transform me?
- 3:21Ouch. But we need to ask it. Where did the phrase come from?
- 3:28The exact phrase, hate the sin, love the sinner, does not appear in Scripture.
- 3:34Similar ideas have appeared throughout history, including writing associated
- 3:38with Augustine and later Mahantama Gandhi.
- 3:43But here's what matters for our conversation.
- 3:48Jesus didn't give us this slogan. So, rather than building our theology around
- 3:56a catchy phrase, let's ask the question.
- 4:00What did Jesus actually teach?
- 4:03Jesus and the log in our own eye. Matthew 7, verses 3 through 5.
- 4:10Give us one of these, excuse me, give us one of Jesus' most memorable pictures.
- 4:17Jesus asks, why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and
- 4:25pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
- 4:29Think about that image. Somebody has a speck and I'm watching around with two
- 4:34by four sticking out of my face, trying to perform eye surgery on them.
- 4:41Jesus isn't saying sin doesn't matter. He's confronting hypocrisy.
- 4:47Before I become confused with fixing somebody else's, Jesus tells me, look at yourself.
- 4:54That's humility. And humility should change the way Christians approach every
- 5:00conversation about sin. So what about the truth?
- 5:05Now, somebody might be thinking, Angel, are you saying Christians should never
- 5:10call anything wrong? No, that's not what I said.
- 5:14That is not what I'm saying. Jesus spoke truth, and the apostles spoke truth.
- 5:20Scripture gives moral instruction, and grace doesn't mean pretending that everything is right.
- 5:28But the biblical truth is never permission to stop loving people.
- 5:34I mean, Ephesians 4, verse 15 talks about speaking the truth in love.
- 5:40Notice something. Truth and love aren't enemies.
- 5:44We don't have to choose, I'm going to tell you the truth, or I'm going to love the person.
- 5:50You know, for us, the answer should be both.
- 5:54But if my truth becomes an excuse to humiliate somebody, Something has gone wrong.
- 6:00And if my version of love means I no longer care about truth,
- 6:05something has gone wrong right there too.
- 6:09Jesus gives us something better than either extreme. Grace and truth.
- 6:15Look how Jesus treated people. Let's dive into that. Think about the people Jesus encountered.
- 6:21Tax collectors. People with damaged reputations. People rejected by religious society.
- 6:27People caught in sin.
- 6:29People everybody else had already labeled.
- 6:33Jesus didn't avoid them. He ate with them. He talked with them.
- 6:38Touched people others wouldn't touch. Listened to people others ignored.
- 6:45And because of that, religious leaders criticized him.
- 6:49Matthew 9 tells us that they asked his disciples, Why does your teacher eat
- 6:56with tax collectors and sinners? And Jesus heard them.
- 7:01And he responded, It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
- 7:07Then he says, For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.
- 7:14Jesus didn't approve of everything people did, but he also didn't require people
- 7:20to become perfect before he came near them. That's grace.
- 7:26Let's talk about that woman caught in adultery. John 8 gives us another powerful picture.
- 7:32A woman is brought before Jesus after being caught in adultery.
- 7:36The religious leaders are ready to condemn her, and Jesus says,
- 7:40let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.
- 7:47And one by one, they dropped their rock and their stone. They left.
- 7:54Then Jesus asked the woman, has no one condemned you? He said, no one, sir.
- 8:01And Jesus responds, then neither do I condemn you. Now go and leave your life of sin.
- 8:09Sin no more. Look at what happens.
- 8:13Grace and truth.
- 8:16Jesus doesn't say, your choices don't matter.
- 8:21But he also doesn't destroy her and protects her dignity.
- 8:28He refuses,
- 8:30to participate in the public condemnation.
- 8:35And then he calls her towards something better.
- 8:38That's very different from standing at the distance and announcing,
- 8:42I hate your sin, but I love you.
- 8:46Jesus actually loved her. See, there's problems with labels.
- 8:51It's something I struggle with. There's just a problem with it.
- 8:54Here's something else we should pretty much talk about.
- 8:56When we use the phrase, love the sinner, we've already labeled the other person, the sinner.
- 9:05But here's the problem. Who else is a sinner? Me. And probably you.
- 9:13Romans 3, 23 says, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
- 9:21So may, instead of dividing the world into Christians over here and sinners
- 9:25over there, we remember we're all people who need grace.
- 9:31The ground at the foot of the cross is level. Nobody arrives there because they've earned their spot.
- 9:38Here's my personal reflection. This episode makes me think about the way people
- 9:43experience Christianity through us.
- 9:46Because somebody may have never opened a Bible before they encounter you.
- 9:51Somebody may never walk into a congregation before they have conversation with you.
- 9:57And wherever or whether we like it or not, people sometimes form an impression
- 10:04of Jesus based on the way Christians treat them.
- 10:08That makes me stop and think.
- 10:10When somebody encounters me, do they feel judged before they even have heard me?
- 10:19Do they feel like I'm looking for what's wrong with them? Or do they experience
- 10:23someone who genuinely cares about them?
- 10:28I don't want somebody to walk away from me. I don't know about you.
- 10:31And I don't want them walking away from me thinking, Angel made sure that I
- 10:35knew everything he thought was wrong with me.
- 10:38I'd rather they walk away thinking, He treated me like I mattered.
- 10:43Because you do matter.
- 10:46See, love isn't agreement. Let's clear up something important.
- 10:51Loving someone doesn't mean agreeing with everything we do.
- 10:56We already understand this in our closest relationships.
- 11:01You can love your child and disagree with the decision. You can love your spouse
- 11:06and have a serious conversation.
- 11:08You can love your friend and tell them you're concerned.
- 11:11Love is not agreement.
- 11:17But a disagreement isn't permission to stop loving.
- 11:21Jesus gives us the standard in John 13, verse 34. As I have loved you,
- 11:27so must love one another.
- 11:30So you must love one another. That's the measuring stick.
- 11:35Not love them as long as they agree with you. Not love them once they change.
- 11:40As I have loved you.
- 11:45That's a much bigger standard.
- 11:50So, how do we live this out? So, what do we do instead of simply repeating?
- 11:56Hate the sins and love the sinner. First, let's start with humility.
- 12:01Remember your own need for grace.
- 12:06And second, the person before the issue, see the person before the issue. They're not debatant.
- 12:14They're not a debate. They're not a political talking point.
- 12:17They're not a project. or a person created in the image of God.
- 12:22Third, listen before you speak. Ooh.
- 12:29That's doozy. Sometimes we're preparing our responses while somebody else is
- 12:33still telling their story. Listen.
- 12:38And fourth, speak truth with love. If a difficult conversation needs to happen,
- 12:44let your words come from genuine concern, not sobriety.
- 12:49And finally,
- 12:52Leave the room. Leave room for God. You are not the Holy Spirit, and neither am I.
- 13:00We can love. We can pray. We can share truth.
- 13:05But God is the only one. God is the one who transforms our hearts.
- 13:11Here's your faith challenge this week. Think about someone you disagree with.
- 13:17Maybe deeply and instead of thinking about what you want to correct ask yourself
- 13:24how can I show this person love,
- 13:28and the love of Christ maybe you listen maybe you call them maybe you sit down
- 13:34for coffee maybe you apologize for the way you have spoken to them.
- 13:41Maybe you simply treat them with dignity and here's the hard part Don't make
- 13:47your kindness conditional on them changing.
- 13:51Love them because Jesus told us to love. And let God handle the rest. Amen.
- 13:59Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us when we didn't have everything
- 14:03figured out. Thank you for your grace, your patience, and your truth.
- 14:08Forgive us for the times we've been quicker to identify.
- 14:12Somebody else's sin or maybe our own.
- 14:17Forgive us when we use truth without love. And forgive us when we've confused
- 14:22love without avoiding the truth altogether.
- 14:26Teach us the way of Jesus and help us see people the way you see them.
- 14:30Give us humility. Give us compassion. Give us wisdom.
- 14:36And when difficulty or when a difficult conversation happens,
- 14:40let our words be filled with grace.
- 14:43Remove pride from our hearts. Remind us that every one of us stands in need.
- 14:52Every one of us stands in need of your mercy.
- 14:57Help us love people not as projects to fix, but as people you created and deeply love.
- 15:06And let the way we live point people toward Jesus.
- 15:11Amen. So, did Jesus say, hate the sin, love the sinner? Nope.
- 15:17Those words aren't a Bible verse, but scripture does call us to do something
- 15:22far more demanding. Love people.
- 15:25Speak truth with humility. Examine yourself. Extend grace and follow Jesus Christ.
- 15:33Maybe we don't need another slogan.
- 15:37Maybe we need to get better at actually doing what Jesus said.
- 15:41As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
- 15:46This has been an episode of Jesus Never Said That. This is number six,
- 15:50a special series from Have Faith, Let It Begin. And remember, it sounds good.
- 15:54It might even sound Christian, but is it actually in the Bible?
- 16:00Don't let a slogan do the work Scripture has meant to do.
- 16:04Open your Bible, read the contact, ask questions, and above all,
- 16:09when people encounter us, let's make sure they encounter the truth,
- 16:13the love, humility, and grace of Jesus.
- 16:17On the next episode of Have Faith, Let It Begin, we're tackling another saying
- 16:20you probably have heard in your entire life.
- 16:24Cleanliness is next to goodness.
- 16:27Well, godness, I think they say it. Yeah, I'll have to look that one up.
- 16:30Sounds biblical, doesn't it?
- 16:32Maybe your mother said it. Maybe your grandmother said it. Maybe somebody said
- 16:36it while you were trying to tell you to clean your room.
- 16:41But where exactly is that verse from? Well, it's not there.
- 16:47So how did cleanliness become connected with Godness?
- 16:55Hmm. That's going to be an important conversation. Jesus actually had some pretty
- 17:00strong things to say about people who looked clean on the outside while something
- 17:04very different was happening on the inside.
- 17:07That, episode seven, on this series of Jesus never said that.
- 17:13I'm getting a little tired. I'm not gonna lie. It's late.
- 17:18So, closing, may God be with you. And have faith.
- 17:24Let it begin. Have faith.
- 17:31Let it begin.
