Latest / Husker Buzz / Money and "Commitment"
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Shawna. It's not easy tracking recruits in the
- 0:04Speaker 1: year 2026 with Transfer Portal and NIL money. And now
- 0:08Speaker 1: programs are paying high school kids to keep their commitment.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Trey Taylor is getting money from Nebraska. But last spring,
- 0:18Speaker 1: Ty Ellis from Fort Worth, who was a commit to
- 0:21Speaker 1: Nebraska in the fall. In fact, I think it was
- 0:23Speaker 1: after the USC game. He said, not only am I
- 0:26Speaker 1: committed to Nebraska, but I'm moving to Nebraska, and I'm
- 0:29Speaker 1: going to play Millard South. Well, yesterday he decommitted from Nebraska.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Was he ever a serious recruit, and why in the
- 0:35Speaker 1: hell did he move up here?
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is one of the oddities. You know,
- 0:39Speaker 2: we've seen this before, though. If you remember Christian Lockett
- 0:42Speaker 2: tour in 2012, He moved from Odessa Pernian in Texas
- 0:47Speaker 2: to play for Lincoln Southwest as a commit. Played his
- 0:50Speaker 2: full season. His parents bought a house on 27th Street
- 0:53Speaker 2: right next to the Country Club of Lincoln. I drive
- 0:55Speaker 2: by that house still every day and think about that story.
- 0:58Speaker 2: He switched his commitment to LSU. And so we've seen
- 1:01Speaker 2: this happen another time, believe it or not, well before
- 1:04Speaker 2: the money entered the game. But, yeah, the money thing
- 1:07Speaker 2: is complicated because actually collectives or schools can't pay kids now.
- 1:14Speaker 2: until they get here and has to count against the cap.
- 1:16Speaker 2: So last November 1st, that went into effect. So if
- 1:20Speaker 2: a kid does get any money before they sign, it
- 1:23Speaker 2: has to be a legit, true NIL deal. The state
- 1:27Speaker 2: of Texas does not allow high school NIL at all.
- 1:31Speaker 2: So that was maybe one of the driving factors for
- 1:33Speaker 2: him to leave Texas because he thought maybe he'd earn
- 1:35Speaker 2: some NIL, come up here. But he's still here, and
- 1:38Speaker 2: I don't think he has much of an option to
- 1:41Speaker 2: go back anywhere at this point because the Texas transfer
- 1:45Speaker 2: rules are really stringent with the UIL down there. They play,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and I wouldn't be surprised if he's at the Nebraska
- 1:53Speaker 2: game on Saturday. This is a world that we live
- 1:55Speaker 2: in now, guys.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It's very strange. It really, truly is. And I guess
- 2:00Speaker 1: my view of it is, that any parent who believes
- 2:03Speaker 1: that that's the best pathway for their kid, to give
- 2:06Speaker 1: up a senior year and all of the activities that
- 2:08Speaker 1: are associated with a senior year to say nothing of
- 2:11Speaker 1: all of their other sports activities, to me is really
- 2:13Speaker 1: a shame because the kid can never get that back.
- 2:16Speaker 1: They can never go back to high school and run
- 2:18Speaker 1: track in high school or play basketball or go to
- 2:21Speaker 1: their senior prom or any of that jazz. And it's
- 2:23Speaker 1: a loss. And I don't know if the kids really,
- 2:24Speaker 1: truly appreciate that today. And I don't know if the
- 2:26Speaker 1: parents really, truly appreciate that either. All right, so we
- 2:29Speaker 1: have the Ohio Bobcats coming in here. And Coach Solich
- 2:32Speaker 1: will be here. Frank will be 82 in a week
- 2:34Speaker 1: or so. He coached both programs. How close is Frank
- 2:38Speaker 1: to the Nebraska program now? You get the impression listening
- 2:41Speaker 1: to Matt Rule that he's pretty close. Is he around it?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he's very close. As close as he's been since
- 2:47Speaker 2: he left Lincoln. And he attends... you know, practices here
- 2:55Speaker 2: and there, which he'll come on a Saturday. He's come
- 2:58Speaker 2: with Coach Osborne. Now, this year he's been a little
- 2:59Speaker 2: bit more careful because of the conflict of interest, obviously,
- 3:03Speaker 2: with this game. Typical Frank, I think he doesn't want
- 3:06Speaker 2: people to think he's spying for Ohio or something. He's
- 3:10Speaker 2: kept kind of a good arm. I can just hear
- 3:12Speaker 2: Gary Saddlemyer laughing right now, too, somewhere. But Frank is
- 3:17Speaker 2: a very classy, by-the-book kind of guy. But this is
- 3:21Speaker 2: quite a moment. You think about everything he has done
- 3:24Speaker 2: from Nebraska from 1965 being the first Husker athlete on
- 3:28Speaker 2: the cover of Sports Illustrated to becoming the all-time winningest
- 3:32Speaker 2: coach at the end of his career at Ohio to
- 3:35Speaker 2: taking Nebraska to a national championship game in 2001 and
- 3:38Speaker 2: recruiting a Heisman winner in Mike Rozier, coaching a Heisman
- 3:41Speaker 2: winner in Eric Crouch. He's done so much for Nebraska, really,
- 3:45Speaker 2: from 1965 to this very day.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And he's in the College Football Hall of Fame. He
- 3:51Speaker 1: was in the class, I believe, of 2024. So I
- 3:55Speaker 1: don't know that there's going to be some sort of
- 3:56Speaker 1: an official introduction of Frank. I think he's probably sitting
- 3:59Speaker 1: somewhere in the stands or in one of the skyboxes.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But maybe at some point there will be. He was
- 4:04Speaker 1: introduced at the spring game back in 2023. Not the same. Okay,
- 4:09Speaker 1: everybody okay for this one? Do we have any major injuries?
- 4:12Speaker 1: Because tomorrow we'll get your keys to the game. Everybody
- 4:15Speaker 1: good to go for this one on Saturday morning?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, there's been a couple of camp things
- 4:20Speaker 2: with guys here and there. Owen Chambliss is one to watch.
- 4:22Speaker 2: William Zaneri, I think, had, you know, I expect him
- 4:26Speaker 2: to play, but I think he missed some time. Tree Balbalade,
- 4:28Speaker 2: as we know, missed time in camp. And, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 2: he's listed the number two behind Gunnar Gatula. So how
- 4:34Speaker 2: much will he play in this game as a tackle?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Caleb Benning missed camp with a hamstring, a little bit
- 4:39Speaker 2: of camp, so... He's third on that depth chart. There's
- 4:43Speaker 2: nothing substantial as far as a key top player on
- 4:47Speaker 2: this roster that's out, but Chambliss is probably the most
- 4:49Speaker 2: notable one to see what his rep load, if he
- 4:52Speaker 2: plays in this game, what it looks like.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Alright, Sean, thanks. That's KFB Husker Info. Strongman Sean Callahan.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Keys to the game tomorrow. Remember, the online pregame show,
