- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on, everybody? It's
- 0:14Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher and Adam Kap and we're back on Inside
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Birds. Guess who's not back? Adam. A lot of
- 0:20Speaker 1: people in the Eagles front office, and we've been waiting
- 0:22Speaker 1: to do this kind of episode. We tend to do
- 0:24Speaker 1: one each year, just kind of updating the changes. But
- 0:28Speaker 1: this time the change hit us in the head and said,
- 0:30Speaker 1: you gotta do it now. As the Eagles have had
- 0:32Speaker 1: some significant losses in both personnel and salary cap and
- 0:39Speaker 1: I think we need to take a macro and a
- 0:40Speaker 1: micro Adam. I think, first of all, I'm gonna let
- 0:43Speaker 1: you do. One of the things we need to explain
- 0:45Speaker 1: to people our listeners is that the Eagles have a
- 0:48Speaker 1: different kind of front office structure than I would say
- 0:51Speaker 1: that most teams have. You have Howie Rosem at the
- 0:54Speaker 1: top as the executive vice president, but up until us
- 0:59Speaker 1: recording this pod cast, they had two different assistant general managers,
- 1:03Speaker 1: neither of which you would say specialize in personnel. There's
- 1:07Speaker 1: John Ferrari, who's still with the team, who is a
- 1:09Speaker 1: compliance guy, kind of called a glue guy. He does
- 1:12Speaker 1: a little bit of everything that how operations to the
- 1:15Speaker 1: operations guy, right, not necessarily tape eval and banging the
- 1:19Speaker 1: table for players not his thing. And then there was
- 1:21Speaker 1: Alec Hallaby, one of the recent losses who, as we understand,
- 1:24Speaker 1: is not just leaving the job altogether going off to
- 1:28Speaker 1: a different venture. He was in charge of the analytics department.
- 1:33Speaker 1: So it's a little different, right to have two a
- 1:37Speaker 1: gms neither who have knee deep in personnel. But then
- 1:41Speaker 1: as we get into there are some other guys who
- 1:44Speaker 1: rank high who were personnel oriented, who are also leading.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So it's kind of an interesting time for the Eagles
- 1:51Speaker 1: front office.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they've had over the last year nine
- 1:53Speaker 2: or ten guys to leave. It's a lot a lot. Now,
- 1:56Speaker 2: remember Bill Pollyan tell me is like what happened. But
- 2:01Speaker 2: you know, at the time he was let go by
- 2:02Speaker 2: Jim Mersey. The team kind of struggle a little bit.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Obviously losing Peyton Manning, you know that was a big
- 2:08Speaker 2: deal with his injuries, but he lost a lot of
- 2:11Speaker 2: key figures close to him. Retirement. Guys became gms, you
- 2:16Speaker 2: left the organization.
- 2:17Speaker 3: It's tough.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I mean, Eagles are still great in terms of the
- 2:21Speaker 2: general manager. They've got the best one. They continue to win,
- 2:25Speaker 2: but you keep losing people really good. Let's start with Halliby.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Halliby was hired I believe Joe Banner actually hired him
- 2:32Speaker 2: a long time. He's way older than Julian Lour. I
- 2:34Speaker 2: know they're very close friends. But he's he's he's he's
- 2:37Speaker 2: much older than Julian I believe.
- 2:38Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, he started by the way in two
- 2:40Speaker 1: thousand and seven as an internal Yeah.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yes, And when I understand, Joe hired him, and he
- 2:46Speaker 2: worked his way up and he to the point where
- 2:50Speaker 2: he became I don't want to say invaluable, but very valuable.
- 2:52Speaker 2: And obviously his relationship with Julian because Julian now in
- 2:55Speaker 2: particular he's going to inherit the team. Julian's very involved
- 2:59Speaker 2: and cash management and making sure analytics are still big.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Part of it.
- 3:04Speaker 2: And Alec was that he was his real job was
- 3:07Speaker 2: analytics and data mining it and understanding what it means
- 3:10Speaker 2: and what they and by the way, it's taken a big,
- 3:14Speaker 2: big into their scouting department in terms of how they grade.
- 3:18Speaker 2: It's part of their grade and that they're still going
- 3:20Speaker 2: to do it. But now they have to they have
- 3:22Speaker 2: to find someone to replace that for him.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Right, we'll get into that in one second. We should
- 3:26Speaker 1: also define here that we're going to talk about people
- 3:29Speaker 1: leaving the Eagles front office, and it usually falls into
- 3:31Speaker 1: three categories. One and the rare one is Alec Hallaby.
- 3:35Speaker 1: He's just from what we understand, he's leaving, just from
- 3:39Speaker 1: talking to people around the league who both told us
- 3:42Speaker 1: that they kind of anticipated this. It sounds like, you know,
- 3:45Speaker 1: he had a couple opportunities to be a GM didn't
- 3:48Speaker 1: work out. A couple of least. I should the interviews,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I should say, yeah, didn't work out, and so you know,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I think, you know, you could maybe make the conclusion
- 3:59Speaker 1: that he just felt like he was never going to
- 4:00Speaker 1: happen and he wanted to go off and try something else.
- 4:03Speaker 1: He's leaving on his own volition, all right. You have
- 4:05Speaker 1: guys that will discuss whose contracts are up and are
- 4:09Speaker 1: not getting renewed. That happens too, And in that case,
- 4:13Speaker 1: some people in the NFL call that a soft firing
- 4:15Speaker 1: because the team basically says it doesn't want you back
- 4:18Speaker 1: after your contract is up. And then there are people
- 4:20Speaker 1: who have left for a different job, a better job.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So three different areas there Alec Halabi, as we understand
- 4:27Speaker 1: as leaving on his own volition.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yeah, he was an assistant general manager. Yeah, and he
- 4:34Speaker 3: interviewed from multiple GM jobs. Didn't get it.
- 4:37Speaker 2: We heard, as we told our patron members a couple
- 4:39Speaker 2: of weeks ago, we heard that this is probably.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Going to happen. Now.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I know, like with some teams, like when guys who
- 4:45Speaker 2: they when clubs, they value.
- 4:47Speaker 3: The front office personnel guy, whatever the position is.
- 4:50Speaker 2: When they really like the guy, sometimes they make you know,
- 4:54Speaker 2: they make a big offer.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Hey, we want to keep you. What do we have
- 4:56Speaker 3: to do to keep you. I don't think that had
- 4:58Speaker 3: anything to do with it.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I think he just I wanted to based on talking
- 5:01Speaker 2: to people who know him in a different direction, He's
- 5:04Speaker 2: going to go into finance exactly what from I understand
- 5:09Speaker 2: is not totally set from what I had heard last
- 5:12Speaker 2: couple of days.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So I heard the same. Yeah, private sector, not totally set,
- 5:16Speaker 1: but has a couple options, and we'll see what happens
- 5:18Speaker 1: with him.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Not football, that's for sure.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Correct, correct? Now, Hey, listen, something can change in the
- 5:23Speaker 1: last minute. Maybe a team is like, hey, I like
- 5:25Speaker 1: but you know, we'll see. So the natural replacement for
- 5:28Speaker 1: him would be Adam Berry, we think, right, the vice
- 5:32Speaker 1: president president of He's currently the vice president of Football
- 5:35Speaker 1: Operations and Strategy. He's the younger brother of Andrew Berry,
- 5:39Speaker 1: who was with the Eagles and is now the Browns GM.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Are they twins?
- 5:44Speaker 1: I No, I think he's younger. I thought he was
- 5:46Speaker 1: a younger brother.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Well.
- 5:47Speaker 2: The reason why is because I'm going to say the
- 5:49Speaker 2: first time I ever saw him in practice, I didn't
- 5:53Speaker 2: realize that they looked almost exactly like.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yes they do.
- 5:57Speaker 2: So I see him like, wait that because I've met
- 5:59Speaker 2: Andrew before. M hm, almost just gonna say congratulations.
- 6:02Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I was like, wait a minute, what the hell? I
- 6:05Speaker 2: thought he got job with the Browns. He's the GM.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I just like in for a second. I was like,
- 6:08Speaker 2: I was like, what is this is weird? Look exactly
- 6:11Speaker 2: the same? So they dificult twins. I don't know anyway, Yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 2: I thought he was a little younger.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I could be. I'm pretty sure he's He's just a
- 6:18Speaker 1: couple a year or two younger.
- 6:20Speaker 3: He went.
- 6:20Speaker 1: He was a wide receiver at Princeton. He's when the
- 6:24Speaker 1: Eagles hired him. He was at Goldman Sachs all right,
- 6:28Speaker 1: so he was a managing director there. I mean he
- 6:30Speaker 1: was a big Wall Street guy. Obviously, his brother was
- 6:33Speaker 1: in the NFL as as an executive with the Eagles
- 6:36Speaker 1: when the Eagles hired him. He does he did pro
- 6:39Speaker 1: in college player evaluation with the Eagles, salary cap stuff.
- 6:43Speaker 1: He does a lot of different things. And I started
- 6:45Speaker 1: to realize Adam about a year or two ago that
- 6:47Speaker 1: he was really rising. When the Eagles department went after
- 6:50Speaker 1: free agency or even the draft, a couple of agents
- 6:53Speaker 1: I would speak to say, hey, you know, I wound
- 6:55Speaker 1: up working this deal out with Adam Berry was like
- 6:58Speaker 1: the first person to call me to to say that
- 6:59Speaker 1: there's interest in there. And everybody's I just tone, demeanor,
- 7:05Speaker 1: seemed to like really like him. They thought he was
- 7:07Speaker 1: a really easy person to talk to. As we know,
- 7:09Speaker 1: the Eagles have had some guys in their front office
- 7:11Speaker 1: and I haven't always been easy to talk to. So
- 7:14Speaker 1: that was that was including Howie to be honest sometimes,
- 7:16Speaker 1: but so that was that was interesting to hear and
- 7:20Speaker 1: he would to me to us would be that natural
- 7:22Speaker 1: fill in for promotion there.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah, that was to me when we first heard that
- 7:29Speaker 2: this was in the works, and most like it was
- 7:31Speaker 2: going to happen. The two guys I thought of were
- 7:33Speaker 2: Adam Bury from a from a data standpoint. They could
- 7:36Speaker 2: always hire someone outside the organization, but he's got his
- 7:40Speaker 2: you know, he's got to have the same belief they have.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Now there of course Joe Douglas, who is not an
- 7:45Speaker 2: analytics guy, who's a senior personal director slash advisor to
- 7:49Speaker 2: Howie as a general manager.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:51Speaker 2: So it's Matt Russell, whether he's you know, whether he
- 7:55Speaker 2: leaves or not, you know there there have been rumors
- 7:57Speaker 2: that he might retire or whatever, and see what happens
- 8:00Speaker 2: with him. Man, I look at the list. You and
- 8:05Speaker 2: I were texting over the last couple of days about this.
- 8:07Speaker 2: It's remarkable how many people have left.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Yeah whatever, so right, right, so so more recently along
- 8:14Speaker 1: with Alec Hallaby, you know, Bryce Johnston, a salary their
- 8:18Speaker 1: main salary cap guy.
- 8:20Speaker 2: This is a big one. We need to talk about this.
- 8:21Speaker 2: This is a big one, and it's.
- 8:23Speaker 1: It's compoundedly big if that's a if that's a correct word.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Because Jake Rosenberg, who used to also be a very
- 8:30Speaker 1: very higher up, another guy like Alec who was hoping
- 8:32Speaker 1: to be a GM, and I believe had some interviews
- 8:35Speaker 1: and it didn't work out, and so he left big
- 8:37Speaker 1: loss too. Yeah, so you really lost two of your
- 8:41Speaker 1: top salary cap management type of guys. And although how
- 8:45Speaker 1: he knows this stuff and has done it, you know
- 8:47Speaker 1: how he is such an uh has so many responsibilities
- 8:51Speaker 1: as the leader of the personnel chain that it was
- 8:54Speaker 1: helpful to him to have Right and Jake and he
- 8:57Speaker 1: didn't have to worry about that stuff. So it'll be
- 8:59Speaker 1: very interesting to see how he replaces that and how
- 9:01Speaker 1: much time this now cuts into that for him. Contracts
- 9:05Speaker 1: and salary cap as opposed to personnel.
- 9:07Speaker 2: All right, here's here's why Bryce Johnston is a big loss.
- 9:12Speaker 2: He was as I understood it then. I'm still I'm
- 9:14Speaker 2: certain this is the case. He came up with the
- 9:17Speaker 2: option bonus inclusion and contracts some years ago, and agents
- 9:21Speaker 2: hate them like they Egles pay their like by and large.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Eagle agents like Howie and they like doing deals with him.
- 9:29Speaker 2: He's a deal maker and they feel like they get
- 9:31Speaker 2: good deals with Eagles, but they don't like the structure
- 9:35Speaker 2: of the option bonuses, which are basically signing bonus inside contracts.
- 9:38Speaker 3: It's same. It's why they do it.
- 9:40Speaker 2: It's because Bryce came up with along with Howie, and
- 9:43Speaker 2: whether Jake was avolved out, I'm not sure, but he
- 9:45Speaker 2: was there then obviously would happened. I know Jake and
- 9:48Speaker 2: Bryce are pretty close mm hm. But what happened was
- 9:53Speaker 2: is they were they're a big cash over cap team
- 9:55Speaker 2: and they're looking to continue that and he found some
- 9:57Speaker 2: loophole to do this with option bonuses and it works, man.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I mean, they're.
- 10:04Speaker 2: It's remarkable some years they spend so much more than
- 10:06Speaker 2: the cap and real money. It's always cash is king.
- 10:09Speaker 2: If you talk to anyone who works in the national
- 10:11Speaker 2: football the cap is so minor compared to cash, and
- 10:14Speaker 2: most of the media has the other way around. They
- 10:15Speaker 2: don't understand. Like I didn't know this when I first
- 10:17Speaker 2: started covering the league. I didn't really look at the
- 10:19Speaker 2: cash bed. I didn't know that, and I started to
- 10:21Speaker 2: stop charting contracts anymore. Like I look at them and
- 10:24Speaker 2: I get access to it, but I stopped taking an
- 10:27Speaker 2: Excel file over twound and fifty contracts.
- 10:29Speaker 3: With dead money, which more often than not. Our teams
- 10:32Speaker 3: don't care about it anymore.
- 10:33Speaker 2: They say they do, sure, but you'd be shocked at
- 10:37Speaker 2: some of the stuff that goes on and we've said
- 10:39Speaker 2: for years about the Saints, they wore to literally go
- 10:41Speaker 2: out of their way. They could be so bad against
- 10:43Speaker 2: the Cap. They will credit card spend, restructure, restructure, restructure,
- 10:47Speaker 2: not cut players right, just they keep kicking the can
- 10:50Speaker 2: down the road. But overall, this is a big one.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Bryce used to work for over the Cap. Was actually
- 10:56Speaker 2: a little bit active in social media. That's where I
- 10:57Speaker 2: first hearn about them. He's from the area, because I
- 11:01Speaker 2: remember I was looking up, like who is this Guy's
- 11:03Speaker 2: really smart? And then that's that's what you know, he
- 11:07Speaker 2: gets hired as a you know, a low level CAP job.
- 11:10Speaker 2: He worked this way up. He's very smart. You make
- 11:13Speaker 2: a really good point. Like Jake Rosenberg one of the
- 11:16Speaker 2: biggest valuks he had. Other than being close to Howie,
- 11:18Speaker 2: you know they grew up together. Jake had this way
- 11:21Speaker 2: with agents that really he just he knew how to
- 11:25Speaker 2: be tough but deal with him in a respectful manner
- 11:29Speaker 2: and taking Howard being able to delicate. That didn't mean
- 11:33Speaker 2: he didn't talk to the agents, but.
- 11:35Speaker 3: There was.
- 11:36Speaker 2: He just you can't do everything. There's just it's an
- 11:38Speaker 2: enormous job, general manager, It's an enormous job. It's not
- 11:41Speaker 2: just watching tape and then getting Bryce in who came
- 11:44Speaker 2: up with the ideas Jake and Bryce working together, and
- 11:49Speaker 2: then and and then Halliby with the analytical part, which
- 11:52Speaker 2: you know they'd all had to tie together, all tied
- 11:55Speaker 2: together by.
- 11:56Speaker 1: The way, different department they work hand in hand.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yes, your mood of all these people, it's a big deal, man,
- 12:03Speaker 2: And to have obviously how he's not perfect, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 2: he's everyone's got their their challenges, but they still have
- 12:12Speaker 2: won a lot together. And you remove all these these
- 12:15Speaker 2: people and you look at the guy Andy Widell left
- 12:19Speaker 2: over the years. I Bunningham, Yeah, who's the Falcons general manager?
- 12:24Speaker 2: Ian Cunningham hired Bryce Johnston to work for him. I'm
- 12:27Speaker 2: sure I can't. I can't wait to get access to
- 12:29Speaker 2: their extensions the enoxt couple of months to see if
- 12:31Speaker 2: they're doing option bonuses.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I'm sure they will, Oh, I'm sure.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:34Speaker 2: But look, you lose all these people, man, I don't
- 12:36Speaker 2: care how good you think you have other people there.
- 12:40Speaker 3: It's a tough deal, man, It's it's a tough deal.
- 12:43Speaker 1: So so let's let's recap it here. But this is
- 12:46Speaker 1: just since the end of the last draft. Okay, So
- 12:49Speaker 1: about a calendar year. You're talking about Bryce Johnson, Alec Hallaby,
- 12:53Speaker 1: Jake Rosenberg, apparently Ben Agelana it's gonna be an area scout. Okay,
- 12:58Speaker 1: he was with the team for a couple of years.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Former Ville Nova guard if I'm not mistaken, right, Yeah, sure, yeah, Angelana.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Jeff Scott, who was an interesting guy. He had come
- 13:07Speaker 1: over from the Commanders and he was also known as
- 13:10Speaker 1: a guy who had both personnel and salary cap contract.
- 13:13Speaker 1: He had a lot of different pedigree about what he
- 13:17Speaker 1: had done in front offices, and that was considered a
- 13:19Speaker 1: good get. When he goes got him he is where
- 13:21Speaker 1: did he go? Did he go to Atlanta too? I
- 13:23Speaker 1: forget where?
- 13:23Speaker 3: Yeah, he's assistant GM, I think yeah.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Dave Caldwell who left in the middle of the year
- 13:29Speaker 1: to become Florida's University of Florida's General manager, which is
- 13:33Speaker 1: like a new new new thing in the era of
- 13:35Speaker 1: nil and transfer portal. That's a good job for him.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Uh.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Anthony Patch and Brandon Hunt left right around this time
- 13:43Speaker 1: last year to go to the Raiders under John spy text.
- 13:46Speaker 3: That's Adam.
- 13:46Speaker 1: That's eight guys. And as you just mentioned, there's some
- 13:51Speaker 1: word about Matt Russell. We'll see if he comes back,
- 13:53Speaker 1: if he retires. And I'm here and there a couple
- 13:56Speaker 1: other guys who you just don't know if they're going
- 13:58Speaker 1: to be coming back. Some people think may not. So God,
- 14:01Speaker 1: you could get to ten to eleven by the time
- 14:03Speaker 1: this thing is done.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Yeah, they may have.
- 14:06Speaker 2: They may Yeah, they're they're they're going to be more.
- 14:09Speaker 2: There's gonna be more moving. I would say it's good
- 14:12Speaker 2: bet that it happens. Some will be non renewals of contracts, whatever.
- 14:17Speaker 2: It might be one or two more people leave. That.
- 14:18Speaker 3: That's kind of what we've heard. It's a lot.
- 14:21Speaker 2: It's a lot of change, man. It's I mean, you
- 14:24Speaker 2: got you got to give it to how I all.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I mean you look at all these people that he's had. Yep,
- 14:28Speaker 2: most not all, like I think, because of the cash
- 14:34Speaker 2: budget cuts over the last four to five years, some
- 14:36Speaker 2: people were told like, hey, we we'd love to keep it.
- 14:39Speaker 2: We can't mm hmm. And they you know, they didn't
- 14:42Speaker 2: have the contracts renewed. But they all got jobs one
- 14:44Speaker 2: way in one way or the other.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Right. But this is a big deal, man, I'm I'm
- 14:50Speaker 3: fascinated to see.
- 14:51Speaker 2: You know, they've got John lou came in, uh some
- 14:53Speaker 2: years ago director of analytics. Maybe he gets promoted actually,
- 14:58Speaker 2: I think it actually in recent years of I'm not mistaken. Yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 2: he actually came in last year. Yeah, he came in
- 15:07Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two, I think, Okay, and he got
- 15:11Speaker 2: he got promoted.
- 15:12Speaker 3: So you never know.
- 15:13Speaker 2: But the bottom line is you keep losing really good people.
- 15:17Speaker 2: It's it's going to catch up to you. And it's
- 15:21Speaker 2: the price of winning. It's a big part of this.
- 15:25Speaker 2: And it's when you you just can't keep everybody like
- 15:29Speaker 2: they've been. They've been so generous with their cash over
- 15:31Speaker 2: the years. Yeah, that's what I've heard from some people
- 15:34Speaker 2: around the league who kind of know, yeah, who've worked
- 15:37Speaker 2: here before, or at least in Philly, they know that
- 15:39Speaker 2: the cash has been cut a little bit, and we'll
- 15:43Speaker 2: have to see what happens here.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Remember we used to talk about how we almost
- 15:47Speaker 1: used to sort of poke fun at it at how
- 15:50Speaker 1: the Eagles had such an oversized scouting department that you know,
- 15:53Speaker 1: there were like three guys who all had basically is
- 15:56Speaker 1: the same title they had. They had a guy who
- 15:58Speaker 1: was called the Senior Director of College Scouting. They had
- 16:01Speaker 1: a guy who was just called the director of college scouting.
- 16:03Speaker 1: And then they had a guy the assistant director.
- 16:06Speaker 3: And director of scouting, remember that one.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Yeah, right, So they have three guys who are all
- 16:09Speaker 1: basically in charge of college and we would make fun
- 16:11Speaker 1: of it, but you know, it was helpful to have
- 16:13Speaker 1: different voices, and it almost seems like it's gone the
- 16:16Speaker 1: opposite way where you're really bear. But there are some
- 16:19Speaker 1: interesting guys. You mentioned Joe Douglas who would obviously this
- 16:23Speaker 1: is what how he does well, right, whether it's Dave Caldwell,
- 16:26Speaker 1: whether it's Matt Russell. And now, I mean even even
- 16:29Speaker 1: prior to that, didn't he bring in there was another
- 16:33Speaker 1: GM he wants he left too, Oh, Jordan dies On.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Another left a year ago if I'm not mistaken.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Yeah, who's the GM? How he brought in from the
- 16:43Speaker 1: Browns to do help him out for a couple of years,
- 16:46Speaker 1: Uh Miche Savage Savage right, brought in Bill Savage, brought
- 16:51Speaker 1: in Tom Donaho. You know, so how he's always done
- 16:54Speaker 1: a good job of kind of having a really well
- 16:56Speaker 1: respected veteran personnel mind to help him out of losses.
- 17:00Speaker 1: And now Joe Douglas being here last year Joe was
- 17:03Speaker 1: doing some interesting stuff. He was working last year also
- 17:07Speaker 1: as a liaison between the coaches and the personnel. You
- 17:10Speaker 1: would see him on the sideline sometimes with the uh,
- 17:13Speaker 1: with the what do you call it? The headphones on.
- 17:15Speaker 1: But he is a natural person to help out Adam Bury,
- 17:18Speaker 1: natural person to get a bump. We've talked about cam
- 17:21Speaker 1: Bradfield the Southwest gout because of the find of Jaylex Hunt.
- 17:25Speaker 1: You know, perhaps that maybe there's something in store for him.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't want to start just going
- 17:29Speaker 1: through scouts and saying this guy, this guy, this, this woman,
- 17:32Speaker 1: this woman, but uh, it'll be interesting to see who
- 17:36Speaker 1: gets the bumps and how how things start to shake
- 17:38Speaker 1: out here.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they're not like like Alan Walkins. It
- 17:42Speaker 2: would be a natural guy to promote. Yep, he's been
- 17:45Speaker 2: with Howie a long time. Ryan Tiny Myers. Myers was
- 17:50Speaker 2: held over from the the Chip Kelly regime. Uh, Tom
- 17:55Speaker 2: Gamble brought him in. So yeah, it's uh they but
- 17:59Speaker 2: for all this, they couldntinue to win and they like
- 18:01Speaker 2: now we know it's early because last year's offseason wasn't
- 18:04Speaker 2: very good.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Let's be honest, but this.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Offseason at least on paper, the quality the player looks better.
- 18:10Speaker 3: The draft is very promising.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Of course we have to see it play out, but
- 18:14Speaker 2: it's uh, it's interesting. Man, you don't and look. And
- 18:18Speaker 2: Eagles are not the only team. There are a bunch
- 18:20Speaker 2: of teams that are gonna lose people. Some people won't
- 18:23Speaker 2: be renewed because when you have new gms by the
- 18:24Speaker 2: way they like in Atlanta, in Cunningham, part of ways
- 18:29Speaker 2: with a bunch of people.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 18:34Speaker 1: long lines, We've all been there. But when it comes
- 18:37Speaker 1: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 18:41Speaker 1: the dispensary for sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly,
- 18:46Speaker 1: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,
- 18:48Speaker 1: no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 18:57Speaker 1: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you'll
- 19:00Speaker 1: walk in. Plus, they carry only the best quality cannabis
- 19:04Speaker 1: at the fairest prices. So whether you're stocking up for
- 19:07Speaker 1: the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrating a big win.
- 19:11Speaker 1: You know you're getting the good stuff without overpaying. They
- 19:15Speaker 1: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 19:19Speaker 1: service members, and healthcare pros. Cam then Apothecary, top quality cannabis,
- 19:25Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 19:28Speaker 1: one and up. So what's interesting from the Eagles standpoint
- 19:31Speaker 1: again about structure, is that most teams have like their
- 19:34Speaker 1: their head guy, whether it's their executive vice president or
- 19:37Speaker 1: their GM whatever. He's their number one, like Howie, and
- 19:40Speaker 1: then their number two is either the assistant general manager
- 19:43Speaker 1: or if they don't have that, they have a director
- 19:46Speaker 1: of player personnel, right, But the Eagles had they had
- 19:49Speaker 1: two number twos in Hallibi and John Ferrari who were
- 19:53Speaker 1: not like knee deep in personnel. But as you just
- 19:56Speaker 1: mentioned Charles Wallace, Alan Wolkin, director vice president, the player
- 20:00Speaker 1: of personnel. One guy does pro, one guy does college show.
- 20:04Speaker 1: You have to almost get down to like three A
- 20:07Speaker 1: and three B before you get the guys who are
- 20:08Speaker 1: heaviest into personnel as far as the organizational flow chart.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:13Speaker 2: And also the other thing is we've kind of joked
- 20:16Speaker 2: over the years, don't pay attention to titles I mean
- 20:18Speaker 2: almost next to nothing. It's it's cosmetically like around the NFL,
- 20:22Speaker 2: it's sometimes they give a guy new title, it's really money.
- 20:25Speaker 2: They have the same exact job, so you have to
- 20:28Speaker 2: kind of find out exactly what they do, right uh
- 20:30Speaker 2: and yeah, the uh this time of the year, you
- 20:35Speaker 2: feel bad for these guys that don't have the contracts renewed.
- 20:37Speaker 2: It's a tough deal because you know, it's when you
- 20:40Speaker 2: have a young family, you're trying to make money. It's
- 20:41Speaker 2: it's a tough deal. And you hope these guys around
- 20:43Speaker 2: the league who don't get brought back to the prospective
- 20:45Speaker 2: teams get they hope they find work elsewhere.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Would you say right now, looking at all the losses
- 20:51Speaker 1: that the cap management, the salary cap management losses are
- 20:56Speaker 1: a little bit more hard hitting right now than the
- 20:58Speaker 1: personnel because they have a guy like Douglas and Adam
- 21:01Speaker 1: Barry have been there can kind of slide roles, but
- 21:03Speaker 1: salary cap it feels like they're gonna have to They're
- 21:06Speaker 1: gonna have to find some guys who are used to
- 21:07Speaker 1: the way the Eagles do things.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Well. Yeah, losing Price Johnston is a big one. Halliby.
- 21:16Speaker 2: They have to find someone who knows data and analytics
- 21:18Speaker 2: the way that Alec did and wanted. Remember he's he
- 21:21Speaker 2: oversaw that. Yeah, the implementation of it all right.
- 21:25Speaker 1: That's where I think Adam Adam can help bridge that gap.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you would think I don't know how, but Halliby
- 21:32Speaker 2: has been doing it for so long, longer than Adam
- 21:34Speaker 2: Berry has. True, Adam Berry's relatively new to working in
- 21:37Speaker 2: the National Football League. So that's a that's a big deal. Yeah,
- 21:41Speaker 2: But look they've also lost a lot of good personnelment
- 21:44Speaker 2: over the years. That's that's a that's you know, you
- 21:46Speaker 2: add up all the losses. It's it's a lot to overcome. How,
- 21:50Speaker 2: I mean, it's we know how he's got a big rollodex,
- 21:53Speaker 2: but that it helps recommendations, you know, I know, I know,
- 21:57Speaker 2: I know some personal guy. It's mid level personnal guys
- 22:01Speaker 2: do have agents. How he's very resourceful. How he's very
- 22:04Speaker 2: resourceful in that way. He'll talk to anyone who is
- 22:08Speaker 2: in that field. But it's still they're not here and
- 22:12Speaker 2: they got to learn the Eagles way. It's to sum
- 22:15Speaker 2: this all up, this is a big deal. It's bigger
- 22:16Speaker 2: than you think. Yeah, and we'll be and once they
- 22:19Speaker 2: get these people to fill roles, we'll explaining what we've
- 22:23Speaker 2: heard about them.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Some other people have worked with them.
- 22:25Speaker 2: We've been fortunate to talk to a lot of people
- 22:29Speaker 2: from some of the guys who came in from organizations.
- 22:31Speaker 3: We're able to find out, you know, what the background
- 22:32Speaker 3: is and stuff. So we'll look into that when it happens.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Awesome, good stuff, all right, Just for so people know,
- 22:39Speaker 1: we do have for our Patreon folks anothery're asking Eagle
- 22:42Speaker 1: and coming up, it's gonna we're gonna have Marcus Smith on.
- 22:44Speaker 1: So really excited about that. Marcus has been a real
- 22:47Speaker 1: active in the mental health space for athletes, and he
- 22:50Speaker 1: tells his story of being you know, an Eagles draft
- 22:53Speaker 1: pick and then going on to the Seahawks and having
- 22:55Speaker 1: some real you know struggles throughout his career. He's helping
- 22:59Speaker 1: athletes and it's a great story. So well, it's a
- 23:02Speaker 1: great chance for our Patreon folks, Tier three folks, Tier
- 23:05Speaker 1: two and three folks to ask him questions about his career,
- 23:09Speaker 1: both football wise, mental health wise, anything they want. And
- 23:12Speaker 1: Greg Cossel will do a final one. Now, we had
- 23:14Speaker 1: Greg Cosel wrapping up the Eagles draft. He had some
- 23:17Speaker 1: more thoughts. He expanded on his thoughts on the Eagles
- 23:20Speaker 1: draft picks, and then he's also going to take a
- 23:22Speaker 1: look around the rest of the NFC East and our
- 23:25Speaker 1: takeaways were Adam that the NFC East is starting to
- 23:28Speaker 1: get better. The coaching got better for sure, right, and
- 23:32Speaker 1: then the talent because of all these high draft picks
- 23:35Speaker 1: appears to be getting better as well.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Yeah that the Washington after a really tough fer agency
- 23:40Speaker 2: last year, a ton of injuries. They know they can't
- 23:42Speaker 2: have the oldest football team in the National Football League,
- 23:45Speaker 2: so they were very aggressive for free agency. But what's
- 23:50Speaker 2: interesting about their approach, unlike the Eagles the last few
- 23:53Speaker 2: years that they didn't do a lot well, they did
- 23:54Speaker 2: someone year deals, but.
- 23:56Speaker 3: They did somewhere.
- 23:57Speaker 2: They gave guys who they wanted to start for a
- 23:58Speaker 2: little bit for them, took a different approach.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Yep, they're getting younger.
- 24:02Speaker 2: The Giants Harbes excellent head coach, gets reborn, He's got
- 24:07Speaker 2: a lot of control on personnel. They had aggressive off
- 24:10Speaker 2: season and draft. And the Cowboys actually, well, at least
- 24:15Speaker 2: their first pick looks like he could be a stud.
- 24:18Speaker 2: There's still I still questions about their defense. We like
- 24:21Speaker 2: Christian Parker coming in change his scheme. Yeah, but where
- 24:25Speaker 2: they have the personnel to do it remains to be seen.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Absolutely, speaking of all the front office moves, I mean,
- 24:31Speaker 1: the Giants clearly got a two for one deal, right,
- 24:33Speaker 1: I mean they're expecting to get Malik Abers back from
- 24:36Speaker 1: his ACL but he's also now been apparently promoted to
- 24:39Speaker 1: director of player Personnel because he's had a lot to
- 24:42Speaker 1: say and weigh in on these draft decisions at John Harbough.
- 24:46Speaker 2: And if you're going to say something like that, well
- 24:49Speaker 2: explain to the folks exactly what he said.
- 24:51Speaker 3: I didn't see it. You and Greg told me.
- 24:53Speaker 1: And listen, I'm guilty of watching a minute and a
- 24:56Speaker 1: half video. But he did appear to question the drafting
- 25:01Speaker 1: of rvil Reese, saying you've already got guys who can
- 25:06Speaker 1: rush the passer and Brian Burns and caveon Thibodau. And
- 25:09Speaker 1: he's basically he almost compared Rvel rees to Abdul Hard
- 25:14Speaker 1: And I you know, that's why I'd like to he's
- 25:17Speaker 1: gonna play off ball linebacker, yeah, along with rushing the passer.
- 25:20Speaker 1: So but I just thought it was funny.
- 25:22Speaker 3: That, you know, I mean, look, I appreciate it. That's
- 25:25Speaker 3: cool that he cares.
- 25:26Speaker 2: But you're gonna if you're gonna make a coming like that,
- 25:28Speaker 2: at least watch the tape or talk to someone in
- 25:30Speaker 2: the front office. That's that's He obviously didn't so that
- 25:34Speaker 2: that it is what it is. But Giants are on
- 25:36Speaker 2: their way back now with neighbors to come back from
- 25:37Speaker 2: Nacy Allandry, so you have to see how he does.
- 25:40Speaker 2: But they added Darna Mooney, you play who's got some juice.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Calvin Austin, who's got short airy quickness, could return that
- 25:49Speaker 2: they got Isaiah Likely. They did draft a right tackle
- 25:54Speaker 2: or a guard. I wore a tackle who's gonna play
- 25:56Speaker 2: guard in the first round. They've been dressed a lot
- 25:58Speaker 2: of needs for the future man they and for cart
- 26:00Speaker 2: needs too. This division, I'd be stunned if they didn't
- 26:04Speaker 2: have two teams with a winning record.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I think I agree with you on that, and I
- 26:08Speaker 1: think it would be a really competitive division. Better look
- 26:12Speaker 1: forward to later this summer when we did the true
- 26:13Speaker 1: divisional breakdowns. All right, that's gonna do it for this
- 26:16Speaker 1: edition of Inside the Birds, the leading podcasts and Eagles Intel,
- 26:20Speaker 1: and as always, we thank you for flying with us.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Inside the birds,
