Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to Jags AM. It is the second day of
- 0:19Speaker 1: joint practice between the Jaguars and the Buccaneers. I'm Kenani Stevens,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Ryan Sexton, John Osher with me. And guess what, guys?
- 0:26Speaker 1: We made it. It is the final training camp day.
- 0:29Speaker 1: There's a walkthrough tomorrow and then obviously the final preseason game.
- 0:32Speaker 2: We've come to the end of the road.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I did not have John singing Boyz II Men on
- 0:38Speaker 1: my bingo card today, but I'm ecstatic about it.
- 0:41Speaker 2: In the 90s, when Pete Prisco and I worked together.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Every Friday when the work was done, he would close
- 0:47Speaker 3: his laptop and sing that.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I love that. I did not know it was Boyz
- 0:51Speaker 2: II Men. Now you do. Boyz II Men, to me,
- 0:55Speaker 2: is one of those new groups.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Oh, is it?
- 0:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Okay. Well, they've been doing pretty good for themselves for
- 1:00Speaker 1: that little new group they are. Today's show is in
- 1:04Speaker 1: our outdoor Hyundai studios, our final show out here. The
- 1:07Speaker 1: guys are stretching, getting ready for the day. No, what
- 1:09Speaker 1: are they, half pads today?
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yeah, shells.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, shells and spiders. Okay. Okay. Let's get into our
- 1:14Speaker 1: big things. Brought to you by GEHA, Government Employee Health Association.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And big thing number one is win the day. They
- 1:20Speaker 1: try to win the day every day. But if you
- 1:22Speaker 1: talk to Baker Mayfield yesterday, he says he doesn't know
- 1:25Speaker 1: if his team would have won the day.
- 1:26Speaker 5: It's tough. I thought, you know, they gave us some
- 1:30Speaker 5: good looks. They were playing with their hair on fire.
- 1:34Speaker 5: We definitely, if this was a full game, I don't
- 1:36Speaker 5: think we would have came out on the winning side
- 1:38Speaker 5: of it.
- 1:39Speaker 6: So just a little eye-opening. Got to get back and
- 1:41Speaker 6: watch the tape. It's never as good.
- 1:43Speaker 5: Or as bad as you think it is, but I
- 1:46Speaker 5: think from my standpoint, they out-physicaled us, and that's never
- 1:50Speaker 5: what you want to have.
- 1:50Speaker 6: So it doesn't matter who we have out there.
- 1:53Speaker 5: You want guys that are going to do their very
- 1:56Speaker 5: best to be the more physical team and want it more,
- 1:58Speaker 5: and I don't know if we did that today.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So a little subjective who wins a day, but I
- 2:03Speaker 1: would say the Jaguars were definitely physical and got what
- 2:06Speaker 1: they wanted to get across yesterday.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Josh Heinz-Allen had a Chase Young kind of day. If
- 2:11Speaker 4: you go back to the New Orleans practice where Chase
- 2:13Speaker 4: Young was all over the backfield, Josh Heinz-Allen was.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I mean, he was.
- 2:18Speaker 4: John, I thought he looked sensational. Trayvon Walker did as well. Listen,
- 2:22Speaker 4: the home team, the team that's hosting.
- 2:24Speaker 2: The practice should. They didn't travel.
- 2:26Speaker 4: They're not staying in a hotel. They know all the surroundings.
- 2:29Speaker 4: They should have the upper hand. And I thought for
- 2:31Speaker 4: a lot of practice yesterday, it looked like they were
- 2:34Speaker 4: ready to go.
- 2:35Speaker 3: And what you just said, watching a lot of these
- 2:38Speaker 3: practices over the years, that's usually how it plays out.
- 2:40Speaker 3: For a game, it's a little different because players are
- 2:43Speaker 3: ratcheted up for a road game. For practice, remember the
- 2:46Speaker 3: Jaguars in New Orleans. Did not start that practice great.
- 2:51Speaker 3: It makes sense. Look, they've had two joint practices since
- 2:56Speaker 3: that Saints practice, and both of them, I don't know
- 2:59Speaker 3: who wins a practice.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But both of them, there were swaths of the practice
- 3:04Speaker 2: where you went, that's a pretty good team.
- 3:07Speaker 3: And doing a lot of good things that you like.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I'm standing on defense yesterday. I'm standing by the defensive
- 3:14Speaker 3: field yesterday. And you see them breaking off long runs
- 3:17Speaker 3: on the offense, meaning Bashell, Tootin, and Rodriguez. You see
- 3:20Speaker 3: all these good things. They're a good team, and they've
- 3:24Speaker 3: practiced well the last couple times they've played.
- 3:27Speaker 2: They've played other good teams.
- 3:29Speaker 4: To beat the teams to death, they responded. That was
- 3:32Speaker 4: what they wanted after that day in New Orleans where
- 3:35Speaker 4: it didn't look so good for this football team. And
- 3:37Speaker 4: every day since, when they've had the opportunity, they've responded.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Let's go to our second big thing today, which is
- 3:43Speaker 1: last call because, as we mentioned, this is the final
- 3:45Speaker 1: training camp day. And for the starters who aren't going
- 3:48Speaker 1: to play probably in that final preseason game, this is
- 3:51Speaker 1: their last padded work for a while against someone that's
- 3:53Speaker 1: not on their own team. John, how important is it?
- 3:56Speaker 1: I mean, I know it's padded mostly yesterday. It's half
- 3:58Speaker 1: padded today. But to get that quality work in when
- 4:01Speaker 1: you're not going to face anybody for a while, September 13th.
- 4:04Speaker 3: No, in talking to players and Liam Cohen yesterday, There
- 4:08Speaker 3: was definitely a feeling of wrapping up and trying to
- 4:12Speaker 3: get an assessment of what's going on. I think it's
- 4:16Speaker 3: been a good camp. I don't know that it's been
- 4:20Speaker 3: perfect from start to finish, but with a good team,
- 4:23Speaker 3: what you want is what we've seen. Some hiccups early.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Liam's never going to be happy with everything in a practice.
- 4:31Speaker 3: But over the last– they felt coming out of New Orleans, Brian,
- 4:35Speaker 3: like they needed to step it up a little bit.
- 4:37Speaker 4: They did.
- 4:38Speaker 3: It's okay to have moments like that in a camp.
- 4:41Speaker 3: It's good to have moments that you respond to. And
- 4:44Speaker 3: I think in the last, I don't know, what is that,
- 4:46Speaker 3: nine or ten days, it's felt like a team, I
- 4:49Speaker 3: wrote it yesterday, it's felt like a team that knows
- 4:52Speaker 3: the regular season is coming and is improving thusly.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Well, we've conditioned them to be strategic with it, right?
- 4:59Speaker 4: To be able to learn from the mistakes and get better.
- 5:03Speaker 4: It's hard not to dial it back a little bit
- 5:06Speaker 4: when you know that you're trying to preserve and all
- 5:10Speaker 4: of that stuff. Mentally, you're gonna take a little step back.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Today's practice is more about speed and technique. They're not
- 5:16Speaker 4: gonna hit too much. They're gonna make sure that they
- 5:19Speaker 4: are focused on When you get a Baker Mayfield and
- 5:23Speaker 4: you're at the top of your rush, are you finishing?
- 5:26Speaker 4: When you've got Travis Hunter lined up against the best
- 5:29Speaker 4: receiver on the other side, how's his footwork? Today is
- 5:32Speaker 4: about using the opportunity against another team to improve your
- 5:36Speaker 4: technique and to play as fast as you can.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And our final big thing today is going to be decisions, decisions.
- 5:42Speaker 1: We won't be back with you guys until Monday. And
- 5:45Speaker 1: before that, Sunday, I think at 6.30, they're going to
- 5:48Speaker 1: make their final cuts. They're going to get this roster
- 5:50Speaker 1: down to 53% I don't know how difficult or vexing
- 5:53Speaker 1: that will be. They have the practice squad, so there's
- 5:55Speaker 1: a lot of guys that are going to try to
- 5:56Speaker 1: keep Brian at the end of that. But I think
- 5:59Speaker 1: maybe that's where they might lose some guys, hoping they
- 6:01Speaker 1: can maybe sneak them on the practice squad to develop
- 6:03Speaker 1: where someone might come grab them.
- 6:04Speaker 4: You know, every year we talk about, John, about the
- 6:07Speaker 4: roster and the management of it. And we've never really,
- 6:09Speaker 4: around Jackson, we've never had to worry too much about
- 6:12Speaker 4: not keeping some of the guys we want. This year,
- 6:16Speaker 4: they are honestly going to have some really difficult decisions.
- 6:18Speaker 4: I'm going to talk about mine coming up a little
- 6:20Speaker 4: bit later, so I don't want to give too much
- 6:21Speaker 4: of it away. But they have some interesting situations, right?
- 6:26Speaker 4: How many offensive linemen do you keep? If Colvin Atlanta
- 6:29Speaker 4: is not ready to start, you're probably going to keep 10.
- 6:31Speaker 4: And where does that short you? How many tight ends
- 6:34Speaker 4: do they want to keep if they want to play
- 6:35Speaker 4: as much? you know, 12 and 13 personnel. What are
- 6:38Speaker 4: you going to do at corner? How many edge rushers?
- 6:41Speaker 4: There's some numbers that are going to dictate what they
- 6:43Speaker 4: do on the practice squad. The practice squads where all
- 6:45Speaker 4: the drama is. I think this roster is all but set.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yeah. It's, uh, the other Brian Thomas jr. Is making
- 6:53Speaker 3: their thoughts difficult. Uh, can they get Jamari Taylor who
- 6:57Speaker 3: I expect to be a practice squad guy? Can they
- 6:59Speaker 3: get all these guys through? They're going to be holding
- 7:01Speaker 3: their breath a lot. And, uh, You know, I don't
- 7:04Speaker 3: know how many guys we're talking about them losing, that
- 7:09Speaker 3: if they lose them, it will be an, oh, no,
- 7:11Speaker 3: it's going to affect us this year.
- 7:13Speaker 2: But there's probably three or four guys.
- 7:15Speaker 3: That they feel like, boy, we'd like to have this
- 7:17Speaker 3: guy around because we feel like he's going to develop.
- 7:19Speaker 3: You get the feeling that they're going to lose a
- 7:21Speaker 3: guy that in two or three years they're going to
- 7:24Speaker 3: look at another team and go, yeah, we were right
- 7:25Speaker 3: on that guy.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Absolutely. Stay with us here on Jags AM. We're going
- 7:28Speaker 1: to recap a really busy joint practice from yesterday and
- 7:31Speaker 1: talk about happy campers and unhappy campers. Jags AM and
- 7:42Speaker 1: happy campers brought to you by Paramount Plus, the official
- 7:45Speaker 1: streaming home of your live local NFL on CBS games.
- 7:50Speaker 7: Definitely wasn't thrilled with the finish. Um, would like to
- 7:54Speaker 7: see us protect it better, would like to see us
- 7:56Speaker 7: complete it better. And, you know, I think that when
- 8:00Speaker 7: you're down two-year wideouts, it's always a little bit of
- 8:03Speaker 7: a challenge, especially ones that separate in man coverage. And, yeah,
- 8:08Speaker 7: we've got to be better.
- 8:09Speaker 1: That's Liam Cohen after a pretty productive day, but he
- 8:11Speaker 1: wasn't happy with his two-minute drill at the end there. And,
- 8:14Speaker 1: you know, that just kind of– there's always something with Liam.
- 8:16Speaker 1: And I'm going to leave that to you, John, because
- 8:19Speaker 1: I'm sure you're going to talk about it a little
- 8:20Speaker 1: bit here. But Liam can always find something to work on.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that leads into the segment we're doing, so I'll
- 8:27Speaker 3: stay away from it a little bit. But it's what
- 8:30Speaker 3: makes them fun to cover. And that element, they had
- 8:35Speaker 3: a really good practice yesterday. And that's what he's going
- 8:39Speaker 3: to think about. That night, yes. And that is very
- 8:44Speaker 3: in keeping with his.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Soul, if you will.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I mean, that's what you get the idea that has
- 8:51Speaker 3: driven him to this point. And it's what will continue driving.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I have a friend that works for the Buccaneers, and
- 8:55Speaker 4: I talked to him last night, and he said, I
- 8:57Speaker 4: miss Liam when he says things like that. He's just
- 8:59Speaker 4: never satisfied. What makes him a great young coach is
- 9:03Speaker 4: that there's always an edge that needs to be sharpened,
- 9:06Speaker 4: and he never shies away from it. He's so transparent.
- 9:10Speaker 4: He tells you exactly what he's thinking, and you can
- 9:12Speaker 4: hear what he's feeling. Every time he goes to the microphone,
- 9:16Speaker 4: I enjoy it.
- 9:17Speaker 1: All right, we're going to do a segment called Happy Campers,
- 9:19Speaker 1: Unhappy Campers. And we're specifically talking about yesterday because they
- 9:22Speaker 1: practiced for over two hours. They got a ton of
- 9:24Speaker 1: work done. So, John, who was a happy camper yesterday
- 9:27Speaker 1: and who was an unhappy camper?
- 9:28Speaker 3: Well, I think the happy camper was Josh Hines-Allen. And
- 9:31Speaker 3: we talked about it a little bit. And you don't
- 9:33Speaker 3: want to overplay a practice, but we all saw it.
- 9:37Speaker 3: It was kind of going chalk here to go with him.
- 9:42Speaker 3: He's in his, what, eighth year. I get the idea
- 9:45Speaker 3: that in talking to him on Sunday at the podium,
- 9:51Speaker 3: training camp for him is about getting ready.
- 9:53Speaker 2: He's not going to get too high and low.
- 9:55Speaker 3: He's going against Worfs yesterday, or he's going against good
- 9:58Speaker 3: linemen with the Bucs. You get the idea, Brian, that
- 10:02Speaker 3: he had the practice that he wanted to, and now
- 10:06Speaker 3: he can say, I'm ready.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And that's fine. He's a pro.
- 10:09Speaker 4: It was as good a practice as I have seen
- 10:12Speaker 4: from him maybe ever. Not that he doesn't practice well,
- 10:15Speaker 4: but that was a tremendous practice. It might be one
- 10:19Speaker 4: of the best practices I've seen from a Jaguar in
- 10:21Speaker 4: the last 10 or 15 years. He was so dialed
- 10:23Speaker 4: in and motivated to have a big day, and he
- 10:26Speaker 4: never seemed gassed. If they needed another rep on the
- 10:28Speaker 4: pass rush party, he was ready to go, Kai. It
- 10:31Speaker 4: really was a tremendous day, and Trayvon Walker got up
- 10:33Speaker 4: at the microphone and said, Josh had a hell of
- 10:35Speaker 4: a day. That's the first thing he said.
- 10:36Speaker 3: And the second part, the unhappy camper, I went with
- 10:40Speaker 3: a two-minute offense. I didn't see how many players who
- 10:43Speaker 3: had an awful practice, and I just thought it was, again...
- 10:47Speaker 3: Very telling how Liam came out of that. They've had
- 10:51Speaker 3: good two minutes in this training camp. I think the
- 10:57Speaker 3: significant thing offensively is the three times that they have
- 11:00Speaker 3: played or practiced against other teams, they've had really good
- 11:05Speaker 3: stretches in the red zone. They've had really good stretches
- 11:09Speaker 3: where they had to be precise.
- 11:10Speaker 2: And on the details.
- 11:12Speaker 3: And those are the moments that translate into games. They've
- 11:15Speaker 3: been really good in big situations, as big as you
- 11:18Speaker 3: can get in training camp. I think that shows you
- 11:21Speaker 3: that they are a developed, mature offense that can function
- 11:25Speaker 3: once it's real.
- 11:25Speaker 4: It is worth noting, one of my memories from that
- 11:29Speaker 4: Saints practice a couple weeks ago was a poor two-minute
- 11:32Speaker 4: performance where they didn't get the final snap off, and
- 11:35Speaker 4: Trevor slammed the ball into the ground. He was disgusted
- 11:37Speaker 4: by it. So that's given them some fits this summer,
- 11:41Speaker 4: and they have to get better at that, and the
- 11:43Speaker 4: head coach is not going to lay off.
- 11:45Speaker 1: There was some frustrations there, but good to work through. Brian,
- 11:47Speaker 1: who are your happy and unhappy campers from yesterday?
- 11:49Speaker 4: Well, I went with Trayvon Walker because I thought he
- 11:51Speaker 4: had a really good practice as well. Maybe not as
- 11:53Speaker 4: prolific as Josh Hines-Allen, John, but what he did very
- 11:57Speaker 4: well was rush from the outside, which we've seen him,
- 12:00Speaker 4: and then he slid inside, which is what we're told
- 12:03Speaker 4: will be an emerging, an increasing workload for him this
- 12:07Speaker 4: year in Anthony Campanile's defense. and I thought it was
- 12:09Speaker 4: really good on the inside yesterday. He's just got a burst,
- 12:13Speaker 4: but he's also got the power of a much broader,
- 12:17Speaker 4: you know, he's 275, but he can anchor in, and
- 12:21Speaker 4: it's tough to move a guy who feels like he's 300,
- 12:23Speaker 4: but he moves like he's 255 in the middle of
- 12:25Speaker 4: that line.
- 12:28Speaker 3: He's got the highest floor, meaning even if he's not
- 12:33Speaker 3: great in a given game, You can't move him. And
- 12:36Speaker 3: he's always going to be good against the rush. There
- 12:38Speaker 3: are certain things that he's always going to bring to
- 12:40Speaker 3: the table. He can have a great, disruptive game without
- 12:45Speaker 3: having a sack. He's a good defensive player.
- 12:47Speaker 6: No doubt.
- 12:48Speaker 4: And by the way, Eric Armstead, same thing. He was
- 12:50Speaker 4: dominant inside yesterday, so he would be equally as happy.
- 12:53Speaker 4: My unhappy is Jamari Taylor for two reasons. The serious
- 12:56Speaker 4: reason is this, is that they love Amir Abdullah. And
- 13:00Speaker 4: you may say, well, he's a 12-year guy on his
- 13:01Speaker 4: seventh team. It doesn't matter. He's one of those guys–
- 13:04Speaker 4: They're worried about the practice squad. They want him around,
- 13:08Speaker 4: and they don't know if he'll survive on the practice squad.
- 13:10Speaker 4: So he got more carries last week, and, of course,
- 13:12Speaker 4: he looked great. So Jamari Taylor has a little bit
- 13:15Speaker 4: of pressure on him because I don't know that you're
- 13:16Speaker 4: going to have two running backs on the practice squad.
- 13:18Speaker 4: It's not unheard of. But when numbers start to squeeze,
- 13:23Speaker 4: that's a guy who's going to be on the bubble.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Which way it goes, I don't know. The other reason
- 13:28Speaker 4: that I said Jamari is– They've got this device. It's
- 13:31Speaker 4: this sled with these hanging bags that are resistant. And
- 13:35Speaker 4: you run through, you know, eight bags. You've seen them
- 13:37Speaker 4: do it.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 13:38Speaker 4: And the first time you run through, you're like, okay.
- 13:40Speaker 4: And the second time you run through, you're like, wow.
- 13:43Speaker 4: And the third time you start to get gassed. Literally,
- 13:45Speaker 4: Chad Morton, the running backs coach yesterday, was go again,
- 13:48Speaker 4: go again, go again. He was an unhappy camper yesterday
- 13:52Speaker 4: in particular because he went through that thing about 20
- 13:56Speaker 4: times and looked like someone might need to help him up.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I think on running back, I think the question with
- 14:01Speaker 3: Taylor is if they get him through. He's going to
- 14:04Speaker 3: be in the league somewhere. I think they keep four,
- 14:08Speaker 3: and I think he's going to be the guy who
- 14:10Speaker 3: they have to try to get through. You think they
- 14:13Speaker 3: keep Amir Abdul on the active roster? Yeah, I do,
- 14:15Speaker 3: because I don't think he gets it. Enough people know
- 14:18Speaker 3: about him, and they know what he can do. He's
- 14:21Speaker 3: so plug and play that any team that needs that guy,
- 14:24Speaker 3: Knows he can come in. He's got 12 years in.
- 14:27Speaker 3: He's played for every team in the NFL. So he
- 14:30Speaker 3: goes in very easily and can be productive week one.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I'd be stunned if he's not on the action roster.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah, anybody that's been.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Around that long as a running back clearly knows how
- 14:39Speaker 1: to play the game. My happy camper, I picked Monteric Brown.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I think I could have gone with a couple different
- 14:44Speaker 1: DB choices because... finally getting some turnovers. I know Liam
- 14:47Speaker 1: Cohen had been talking about wanting to see those takeaways,
- 14:50Speaker 1: and I assume he was happier to see it in
- 14:53Speaker 1: a joint practice, so it wasn't his offense that was
- 14:55Speaker 1: getting picked off, but Monteric had an interception, Antonio Johnson,
- 15:00Speaker 1: I think, as well. There was a couple almost forced
- 15:03Speaker 1: plays as well, so it was nice to see them
- 15:05Speaker 1: kind of getting after the ball like we saw so
- 15:08Speaker 1: much from them last season, and I think the defense
- 15:10Speaker 1: as a whole was just very physical, very attacking style,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and I was impressed with how much they were able
- 15:17Speaker 1: to bother Baker Mayfield throughout the day, both the pass
- 15:20Speaker 1: rush and in the secondary.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I thought one and six, six being Antonio Johnson. The
- 15:25Speaker 4: two of those guys flew around the secondary yesterday, set
- 15:28Speaker 4: the tempo not just for that group, John, but for
- 15:30Speaker 4: the defense as a whole. I think the back end
- 15:32Speaker 4: of this defense, and Trayvon Walker talked about it yesterday,
- 15:35Speaker 4: is elevating to a level where it's really going to help.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Sticky coverage will give them an extra second at the
- 15:42Speaker 4: top of their pass rush to finish where last year
- 15:45Speaker 4: it didn't happen.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and then you combine that with, I think they're
- 15:48Speaker 3: going to be marginally better rushing the passer, at least.
- 15:53Speaker 2: It might be a lot better.
- 15:54Speaker 3: But bare minimum, I think you're going, if Josh and
- 15:58Speaker 3: Trayvon are healthy, you're going to get more out of that.
- 16:01Speaker 3: And isn't there a feeling that you're going to get
- 16:04Speaker 3: out of the four or five guys on the edge
- 16:06Speaker 3: that are behind them? If they got three level out
- 16:11Speaker 3: of that last year, you feel like those guys can
- 16:14Speaker 3: get five or six level, a few more sacks, a
- 16:17Speaker 3: bit more legitimate pressure.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I think they're going to be.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Significantly better, if not dramatically better defensively. I don't know
- 16:28Speaker 3: if they're going to be the best defense in the league,
- 16:30Speaker 3: but I think they're going to be better in some
- 16:31Speaker 3: decent situations because of the coverage in the rush.
- 16:34Speaker 1: My unhappy camper is going to be Baker Mayfield, and
- 16:36Speaker 1: this kind of goes in the same conversation. We heard
- 16:38Speaker 1: him off the top say he felt like they got out-physicaled.
- 16:42Speaker 2: I think it's a.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Point of focus as well. We talked about Josh. Obviously,
- 16:45Speaker 1: we talked about Trayvon. But all these teams that have
- 16:48Speaker 1: come in, that's almost like the first thing out of
- 16:50Speaker 1: their mouth is when they're talking about the edge rushers
- 16:52Speaker 1: on this team. And I think sometimes we don't take
- 16:54Speaker 1: them for granted necessarily, but to realize that's what some
- 16:57Speaker 1: teams are focusing on when they come in here saying, yeah, well,
- 16:59Speaker 1: with the edge rushers the Jaguars have, that's where they're
- 17:02Speaker 1: putting their point of focus. And clearly, Baker Mayfield was
- 17:05Speaker 1: bothered yesterday more than a few plays. And They kind
- 17:07Speaker 1: of let the plays run through sometimes when they're doing
- 17:09Speaker 1: team drills because if you called a sack on every play,
- 17:11Speaker 1: they wouldn't get anything done. But Josh and Trayvon were
- 17:14Speaker 1: around him all day. Eric Armstead as well. So he
- 17:17Speaker 1: was a little bit bothered by that. I'm curious what
- 17:18Speaker 1: the team's situations will look like today. But they were
- 17:22Speaker 1: very disruptive yesterday, and I know Coach Camp was probably
- 17:26Speaker 1: a happy camper with what he saw.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I almost wonder if they don't really back off
- 17:30Speaker 3: the physicality today.
- 17:31Speaker 2: I don't think they will.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Either of them.
- 17:34Speaker 3: I think they might just because... They got through yesterday
- 17:37Speaker 3: without a whole lot of brouhaha and silly fighting. It's
- 17:43Speaker 3: a shorter practice today.
- 17:45Speaker 2: I think it'll be more situational.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I think, though, what Baker talked about is what teams,
- 17:53Speaker 3: once they get in an environment with the Jaguars, you
- 17:57Speaker 3: usually hear the last couple years that they walk away saying,
- 17:59Speaker 3: that's a more physical team than we thought. That's sort
- 18:02Speaker 3: of their calling card. So I'm not surprised that Baker
- 18:08Speaker 3: came away with that. Because, again, I think that's what
- 18:11Speaker 3: the Jaguars want to be, and I thought they showed
- 18:12Speaker 3: it yesterday.
- 18:13Speaker 4: I thought maybe Umeni was happy they didn't get a
- 18:15Speaker 4: contract extension done for him over in Tampa before the
- 18:17Speaker 4: start of the season.
- 18:18Speaker 1: I'm sure he's unhappy about.
- 18:19Speaker 2: That, too.
- 18:19Speaker 4: But he's the kind of guy who will like Liam. Motivation. Yeah,
- 18:22Speaker 4: he'll use that all season long.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Stay with us here on JAGZAM. We're going to answer
- 18:26Speaker 1: some fan questions after the break. Friday's Jaguars game against
- 18:33Speaker 1: the Buccaneers, brought to you by Wolfson's Children's Hospital, the
- 18:35Speaker 1: official children's hospital for Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 18:39Speaker 2: This broadcast is Buzz Out Friendly.
- 18:42Speaker 3: The O-Zone.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Welcome back, Dan. We're going to do some Ozone Mailbag
- 18:46Speaker 1: questions because the readers need to know things, and John
- 18:49Speaker 1: is here with answers. We're going to start out with
- 18:51Speaker 1: Michael from Fruit Coast, Florida. He says, do teams game
- 18:55Speaker 1: plan at all for joint practices? Do they watch film
- 18:58Speaker 1: so they at least know a little bit about what
- 19:00Speaker 1: to expect?
- 19:01Speaker 2: Well, they prepare.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I wouldn't call it necessarily game planning. I'm sure they
- 19:06Speaker 3: put on some film or tape to watch it, It's
- 19:10Speaker 3: not game planning or watching film in a traditional sense
- 19:13Speaker 3: where you're trying to scheme a way to absolutely beat
- 19:16Speaker 3: them or drive them into the dirt.
- 19:19Speaker 2: But probably.
- 19:23Speaker 3: It's probably more accurate to say that they talk to
- 19:25Speaker 3: each other in advance and try to figure out what
- 19:28Speaker 3: they want to work on. That's what makes it different
- 19:31Speaker 3: than the game, more than the game planning, Brian.
- 19:33Speaker 4: It's very well coordinated. Liam alluded to that several times,
- 19:36Speaker 4: that they had met and talked about this previously. with
- 19:39Speaker 4: the Bucs folks. I think it's easier to say Liam
- 19:43Speaker 4: wanted to practice against Todd Bowles' system. He was after
- 19:46Speaker 4: the Saints and the Panthers were very vanilla and didn't
- 19:49Speaker 4: give his offensive line or his quarterback any complicated looks,
- 19:54Speaker 4: he knew until he prepared his team for the fact
- 19:56Speaker 4: that Todd Bowles was going to come in and send everything.
- 19:58Speaker 4: And he was eager to have that. So there are
- 20:00Speaker 4: qualities about coaching staffs and about the way that they
- 20:04Speaker 4: play the game that make it attractive to practice against them.
- 20:07Speaker 4: And this is a great example of that.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I think also it's a good thing to point out,
- 20:11Speaker 1: in preseason games they don't necessarily game plan either. It's
- 20:14Speaker 1: stuff they want to work on and what they need
- 20:15Speaker 1: to see out of these players they're trying to evaluate.
- 20:17Speaker 3: There's usually some game planning for one of them so
- 20:20Speaker 3: that they can get in the habit of doing it.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Particularly early, that's one of the things that I think
- 20:27Speaker 3: a lot of people miss about the preseason.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Oh, they didn't play very well. Well, they had no
- 20:30Speaker 2: game plan. They were just running plays.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Yeah, they were just out there. So, yes.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Yes.
- 20:33Speaker 1: All right, next question is from HD from Jacksonville. The
- 20:38Speaker 1: last preseason game is August 28th, but what happens between
- 20:41Speaker 1: then September 1st after the cuts and 1 p.m. September 13th?
- 20:45Speaker 1: Are there restrictions about how much they can practice, what
- 20:47Speaker 1: they can do?
- 20:49Speaker 2: Just a lot of dancing.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Just hanging out, straight vibing?
- 20:54Speaker 3: Next week there will be, I believe, two or three
- 20:59Speaker 3: practices that take the tone of lighter– regular season practices uh...
- 21:05Speaker 3: i don't think they will hit but they will have
- 21:09Speaker 3: practice and they sort of call them bonus work it's
- 21:13Speaker 3: new stuff because it's only been in the last few
- 21:15Speaker 3: years where you've had this vibe between the third preseason
- 21:19Speaker 3: game and the regular season so that is a lighter
- 21:22Speaker 3: week uh... and then they have a what they always
- 21:26Speaker 3: call a bonus practice on labor day monday the players
- 21:29Speaker 3: normal day off is that.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Tuesday and then uh.
- 21:33Speaker 3: On Wednesday, you're into it. I mean, on that Wednesday,
- 21:38Speaker 3: it's the regular season. It's time to get going.
- 21:40Speaker 4: You know, it's a bye week, and the collective bargaining
- 21:42Speaker 4: agreement between the players and the owners regulates everything.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Yeah, they can't do anything on Friday.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:47Speaker 4: So on the bye week in the season, they are
- 21:50Speaker 4: required to give them four days off.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:53Speaker 4: So they get Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. This
- 21:55Speaker 4: is such a new phenomenon.
- 21:57Speaker 2: On this one, it's three. It's Friday, Saturday, Saturday.
- 21:59Speaker 4: Right, so they're getting three days off. So that's the
- 22:00Speaker 4: restrictions there. Liam had said that they wouldn't be hitting
- 22:03Speaker 4: again for quite a while, so you're right, they're not
- 22:06Speaker 4: going to hit next week. And it's a week where
- 22:08Speaker 4: you can get a little bit ahead working on Cleveland
- 22:11Speaker 4: and get yourself right physically and make sure that anybody
- 22:14Speaker 4: that you've got that has a nagging injury or anything
- 22:16Speaker 4: that is concerning can kind of work their way back.
- 22:19Speaker 4: They'll be smart about it. That's right.
- 22:21Speaker 1: All right, our final question is Jesse from Texas. This
- 22:24Speaker 1: one's a little bit fun. Who would most likely win
- 22:26Speaker 1: the 50-yard dash between Tootin', Hunter, and Brian Thomas Jr.?
- 22:31Speaker 1: I'm curious everyone's thoughts on this.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I got this question, and I kind of laughed
- 22:35Speaker 3: because if you want to see debate flare in a
- 22:40Speaker 3: locker room, go ask the wide receivers as a group, hey,
- 22:45Speaker 3: which one of you guys is faster?
- 22:46Speaker 2: And then just walk away and watch because Throw it
- 22:49Speaker 2: in there.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Even if they have statistics and even if they've lost
- 22:53Speaker 3: 15 times, every guy who's not a lineman or a quarterback,
- 23:00Speaker 3: think they're the fastest guy on the team. My guess
- 23:03Speaker 3: is this is Tootin. I think he probably has straightaway speed.
- 23:10Speaker 3: You're not going to blow him out in this. I
- 23:13Speaker 3: would go with Tootin, but Again, I'm not going to
- 23:18Speaker 3: argue with him about it. Hunter was the guy who
- 23:20Speaker 3: ran 22.6.
- 23:20Speaker 1: I was going to say, I think Hunter has a
- 23:22Speaker 1: little more, since it's 50 yards, I feel like he
- 23:25Speaker 1: could hit the gas on the back end and kind
- 23:27Speaker 1: of push.
- 23:27Speaker 4: It over the edge. I also think that Hunter is this,
- 23:30Speaker 4: he just loves the competition side of it. Not that
- 23:33Speaker 4: Basial doesn't. I don't know. But I would look at
- 23:36Speaker 4: Hunter and say, oh, you're going to line up and
- 23:37Speaker 4: you're going to race between those three? My money's on him.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Like, for instance, I don't know how fast on a
- 23:43Speaker 3: track the Jarian is. But I guarantee if you ask
- 23:46Speaker 3: him if he's as fast as a locker, he's going
- 23:47Speaker 3: to tell you he is.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Well, he's got the biggest mouth, so he's definitely going
- 23:49Speaker 1: to say that.
- 23:50Speaker 3: This is one of those, when I was in Indianapolis,
- 23:53Speaker 3: and I think even here I did it once, just
- 23:55Speaker 3: kind of go over to the corners and say, hey,
- 23:56Speaker 3: you know, so-and-so.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Says they're faster than you. And it's always fun. Absolutely.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Roll out the ball.
- 24:03Speaker 1: We'll see.
- 24:03Speaker 6: They're going to do it soon.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Stay with us here on JAGZAM. We'll tell you what's
- 24:06Speaker 1: coming up for preseason game, cuts, and the rest.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Of next week as well.
- 24:13Speaker 6: Liam's a player's coach. He has his system, yes.
- 24:18Speaker 5: He has his bread and butter that he wants to
- 24:19Speaker 5: get done, but he always adapts to the players and
- 24:21Speaker 5: personality he has. I think just his communication style when
- 24:25Speaker 5: it comes down to.
- 24:25Speaker 4: That as well.
- 24:27Speaker 6: Liam's a close friend of mine and happy for him.
- 24:30Speaker 6: He's a hell of a coach.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Baker very upfront and honest. You can see why him
- 24:34Speaker 1: and Liam got along really well that season. They worked
- 24:37Speaker 1: together in Tampa, and I think we're all happy Liam is.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Here, of course.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Good to hear it from him, too.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Do you remember the deal that was made in Cincinnati
- 24:45Speaker 4: last year where Liam was pounding his chest and pointing
- 24:48Speaker 4: at the quarterback? I would love to have seen a
- 24:50Speaker 4: moment in a meeting room where the two of those
- 24:52Speaker 4: guys disagreed. Getting after it, yeah. Because they're both so
- 24:55Speaker 4: passionate and intense about the game. I bet it was fun.
- 25:00Speaker 3: The best Liam quote yesterday was when he called the
- 25:02Speaker 3: fight between Lawrence and the Tampa linebacker, I'm drawing a blank,
- 25:06Speaker 3: hair on hair. That was some pretty high-end humor for Liam.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Hair on hair.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Alright, so let's lay this out for you guys a
- 25:15Speaker 1: little bit. There's a walkthrough tomorrow, there's the final preseason game,
- 25:17Speaker 1: we're probably not going to see any of the starters
- 25:19Speaker 1: in that one, and then cuts are on Sunday. Talked
- 25:22Speaker 1: a little bit about a quiet week, and then we'll
- 25:24Speaker 1: be back for obviously week one ramp up as normal,
- 25:27Speaker 1: but Overall, I mean, I think what I liked about
- 25:29Speaker 1: this training camp was it perfect by no means, but
- 25:32Speaker 1: it felt like they got done what they needed to
- 25:34Speaker 1: get done while continuing to kind of have that attack mentality,
- 25:38Speaker 1: not being complacent with the season that they had last year.
- 25:41Speaker 1: They're very much building towards something.
- 25:43Speaker 3: Yeah, they feel like I said earlier, I feel like
- 25:46Speaker 3: in the second two practices, joint practices, you walked away
- 25:51Speaker 3: from both of them. Again, I don't try to judge
- 25:55Speaker 3: who wins a practice. But on both of them, you
- 25:57Speaker 3: felt like they were on solid footing. They won some things.
- 26:03Speaker 3: And you felt like they were getting better in areas
- 26:05Speaker 3: they wanted to get better. And you felt like they
- 26:08Speaker 3: got stuff done that they can rely.
- 26:10Speaker 2: On moving forward. I think this team feels.
- 26:12Speaker 3: Good about itself after that practice yesterday. And I think
- 26:16Speaker 3: they can walk with their chest out and their heads high.
- 26:19Speaker 4: They passed the eye test, right? Just rely on what
- 26:22Speaker 4: you're seeing and don't try to read too much into it.
- 26:25Speaker 4: How'd you line up? And they lined up favorably. Slow
- 26:28Speaker 4: start in New Orleans, but they lined up favorably against
- 26:30Speaker 4: these teams. And truthfully, they were 13-4 last year. I
- 26:34Speaker 4: think they're better than all three teams. And at moments,
- 26:38Speaker 4: even in New Orleans, they looked better. The question is now,
- 26:41Speaker 4: can they stay healthy and go play better? We'll find out.
- 26:43Speaker 4: I thought training camp, for the first time in 33
- 26:45Speaker 4: years I've done this, it never really seemed to drag.
- 26:48Speaker 4: And I think that's because the joint practices were interspersed
- 26:51Speaker 4: there at the moments where it would feel like it did.
- 26:54Speaker 4: And I think this team looks fresh because of it.
- 26:55Speaker 4: And this is more about the ear test, Kai. But
- 26:57Speaker 4: my phone's blowing up. They want more singing.
- 27:00Speaker 1: So I don't produce this show.
- 27:03Speaker 2: But in the future, we can just work some segments.
- 27:06Speaker 2: We've come to the end of the road. That's all
- 27:11Speaker 2: I know.
- 27:12Speaker 1: We hope you've enjoyed the final training camp practice. Of course,
- 27:15Speaker 1: enjoy the final preseason game on Friday. And we will
- 27:17Speaker 1: be back here on Monday on Jags AM to tell
- 27:20Speaker 1: you all about the weekend and get you ready for
- 27:22Speaker 1: the regular season.
