- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey everybody, we made it to season 23, which has
- 0:04Speaker 1: no theme, so it's kind of a free-for-all. So, hit like, subscribe,
- 0:08Speaker 1: leave a comment, do whatever you want. Just be safe.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Nicot County 911, what's the location of the emergency? Oak Street?
- 0:20Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Oak? Yep. Is that a house or apartment?
- 0:24Speaker 2: It's a house. Alright, and what is your name?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Hillary.
- 0:30Speaker 2: He's Mason. And what's going on there? Well, the last
- 0:37Speaker 2: couple of days or so, my husband and I, our
- 0:40Speaker 2: five-year-old has been, you know, rebelling against food. She said,
- 0:45Speaker 2: you know, she wasn't going to eat anymore. We went
- 0:47Speaker 2: through this with our other child and got her turned
- 0:50Speaker 2: back around. Right now, she is not, she's not even.
- 0:53Speaker 1: How old is the kid?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Five. Five. I just gave her a bath and she's
- 1:02Speaker 2: not even, she's not even coherent. It doesn't even look
- 1:05Speaker 2: like she's breathing right now. Okay, so this is more
- 1:09Speaker 2: of a medical issue then? No, I don't, in my
- 1:13Speaker 2: personal opinion, I don't think it's a medical issue. We
- 1:16Speaker 2: went through this with our other daughter with just rebelling
- 1:19Speaker 2: against food, certain foods. If it's not what they want,
- 1:23Speaker 2: they won't eat. I see. So, and she's taken it
- 1:27Speaker 2: a little too far. She's taken it to the extreme.
- 1:29Speaker 2: We've been giving her plenty of fluid that she's not
- 1:31Speaker 2: going to eat, you know, but she can't. She's been
- 1:35Speaker 2: stumbling around the house. We've tried a lot. Nothing seems
- 1:44Speaker 2: to be working. Right now, it doesn't look like she's breathing.
- 1:49Speaker 2: My husband's got her in the kitchen right now trying
- 1:51Speaker 2: to give her, you know, like CPR. CPR. He said
- 1:56Speaker 2: it sounds like she's got fluid in her lungs, but... Okay.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I'm freaking out. I'm sorry. Okay, we'll get help over
- 2:07Speaker 2: to you, okay? Thank you so much. Oh, correct? Yes, yes.
- 2:11Speaker 2: All right, thank you.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Bye-bye.
- 2:12Speaker 2: All right, thank you, guys.
- 2:16Speaker 1: On May 26, 2015, Hillary Mason called 911 and made
- 2:20Speaker 1: the strangest report I've ever heard. She said that her
- 2:23Speaker 1: five-year-old stepdaughter, Mackenzie Mason, was, quote, She described giving her
- 2:30Speaker 1: a bath and the girl being incoherent before finally saying
- 2:34Speaker 1: she wasn't breathing. But when the operator asked if it
- 2:37Speaker 1: was a medical emergency, Hillary responded that she didn't think
- 2:41Speaker 1: it was a medical issue. In what world is a
- 2:44Speaker 1: five-year-old child not breathing not a medical issue? It's like
- 2:48Speaker 1: she called 911 and is unsure of why she called 911,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but a child isn't breathing, so it should be really
- 2:55Speaker 1: fucking obvious why she called 911. Then, after complaining about
- 3:00Speaker 1: the girl rebelling against food some more, she casually mentioned
- 3:04Speaker 1: that her husband was giving Mackenzie CPR. The operator, who
- 3:08Speaker 1: was likely very confused, sent paramedics to the home right away.
- 3:13Speaker 1: They likely assumed the girl had choked on some food,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but when first responders arrived, it was clear that food
- 3:18Speaker 1: had not been something the girl had experienced much of
- 3:21Speaker 1: prior to the incident. Music Andrew and Hillary Mason had
- 3:50Speaker 1: not been married long, but they were caring for Andrew's
- 3:52Speaker 1: two daughters from a prior relationship, five-year-old Mackenzie and three-year-old Michaela,
- 3:58Speaker 1: whose mother was Shelby Coffey. Shelby had lost custody of
- 4:02Speaker 1: the children about two years prior when she was sent
- 4:05Speaker 1: to jail for a domestic disturbance. She said she had
- 4:08Speaker 1: tried to visit the girls after her release, but was
- 4:11Speaker 1: either told they weren't home or that she wasn't allowed
- 4:14Speaker 1: to see them. Hillary had two children of her own
- 4:18Speaker 1: living with the couple who were between the ages of
- 4:20Speaker 1: 5 and 11. They lived in a house in Port Huron, Michigan,
- 4:24Speaker 1: about 60 miles or 96 kilometers northeast of downtown Detroit.
- 4:30Speaker 1: There was an issue raised later about the first 911
- 4:33Speaker 1: operator not staying on the phone with Hillary until the
- 4:36Speaker 1: first responders arrived. It was later determined that that did
- 4:40Speaker 1: not cause any delay in paramedics arriving on the scene. Still,
- 4:45Speaker 1: Hillary called 911 back to check on the status of
- 4:48Speaker 1: the first responders.
- 4:49Speaker 2: 911, what's the location of your emergency? Oak Street. I
- 4:54Speaker 2: just made a call and I'm just wondering when somebody's
- 4:56Speaker 2: going to be here. Okay, let me find your call here. Okay,
- 5:01Speaker 2: we have help on the way. Anything changed? She's not moving. Okay,
- 5:07Speaker 2: is she breathing? We don't think she's breathing. Okay, I
- 5:11Speaker 2: need you to get right next to her and check, okay?
- 5:14Speaker 2: My husband's right next to her. He's trying to CP
- 5:16Speaker 2: out on her. Okay, is she laying flat on the floor?
- 5:20Speaker 2: She's laying flat on the floor, yeah. Oh, they're on
- 5:24Speaker 2: their way. They are on their way, okay?
- 5:28Speaker 1: Was she eating something?
- 5:30Speaker 2: No, she's been rebelling against food lately. If it's not
- 5:33Speaker 2: what she wants, she won't eat it. Okay, and she's
- 5:37Speaker 2: not awake? She asked if she's not even there. Okay.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I tried giving her a bath to see if it
- 5:46Speaker 2: would help. We've been giving her plenty of food, but
- 5:49Speaker 2: it's not any.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Is she awake right now? No, it doesn't even look
- 5:53Speaker 2: like she's there.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Okay. Let me get some help for you, okay? Okay.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Do you hear them?
- 6:06Speaker 2: Yes, I do. Okay. She's flat on the floor. Are
- 6:09Speaker 2: you right by her now? I'm outside my husband. Okay. Yes,
- 6:14Speaker 2: make sure your husband's still... I'm doing CPR on her. Yes. Okay. Yep,
- 6:19Speaker 2: have her keep going until they're right next to her.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Let me know when they're right there with you, okay? Okay,
- 6:25Speaker 2: they're pulling up right now. Yep, let me know when
- 6:28Speaker 2: they see you, when they're with you. I'm standing out
- 6:32Speaker 2: by the road, so... Okay. Okay. Okay. Thank you so much.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I'm going to leave them in the house. No problem. Yep,
- 6:42Speaker 2: let them... Are they there with you? Yes, they're here. Okay,
- 6:46Speaker 2: I'll let you go. All right, thank you. Yep, bye.
- 6:50Speaker 1: She was really hammering home the detail that Mackenzie was, quote,
- 6:53Speaker 1: rebelling against food. It really feels like they starved the
- 6:57Speaker 1: girl to death and decided to call 911 with this
- 7:00Speaker 1: story that Mackenzie starved herself to death. That operator did
- 7:05Speaker 1: stay on the line until the paramedics arrived. They usually
- 7:09Speaker 1: do so as to report any changes in anyone's condition
- 7:12Speaker 1: before the police or paramedics arrive. Now, when the paramedics
- 7:17Speaker 1: showed up to the Mason's house, it was immediately clear
- 7:20Speaker 1: they were not responding to a choking child. The girl
- 7:23Speaker 1: was wrapped in a blanket and she had no pulse.
- 7:26Speaker 1: She was pale and extremely thin. When she was eventually weighed,
- 7:31Speaker 1: she was only 25 pounds or about 11 kilograms. A
- 7:36Speaker 1: healthy 5-year-old girl weighs about 40 pounds or 18 kilograms
- 7:40Speaker 1: on average. She was rushed to the hospital but pronounced
- 7:44Speaker 1: dead once there. Her younger sister Michaela was only 17
- 7:48Speaker 1: pounds or a little less than 8 kilograms. A healthy
- 7:52Speaker 1: 3-year-old girl weighs about 30 pounds or 13.5 kilograms on average.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Michaela was also admitted to the hospital where she ended
- 8:01Speaker 1: up recovering. Witnesses testify that Hillary's two biological children were
- 8:07Speaker 1: at the house at the time of the call and
- 8:09Speaker 1: they looked perfectly healthy. That's not uncommon during cases of
- 8:13Speaker 1: filicide where a parent or step-parent causes the death of
- 8:16Speaker 1: a child. One of the step-parents in the relationship makes
- 8:20Speaker 1: sure their own kids get taken care of while the
- 8:22Speaker 1: other children get neglected. It's likely that Hillary was the
- 8:26Speaker 1: dominant one in the relationship, but that's just speculation. It
- 8:31Speaker 1: was immediately clear that Mackenzie's death was not an accident.
- 8:34Speaker 1: She had been starved over a long period of time.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Not only that, but an autopsy revealed that it was
- 8:40Speaker 1: possible that the girl had been dead for hours prior
- 8:43Speaker 1: to the 911 call. They found that Mackenzie had been
- 8:47Speaker 1: suffering from pneumonia at the time of her death and
- 8:49Speaker 1: had an infection in her genitalia. There was no evidence
- 8:53Speaker 1: of sexual assault presented, but the infection was used during
- 8:56Speaker 1: sentencing to highlight the pain and suffering the victim experienced.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Andrew and Hillary pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, torture,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and child abuse. Their lawyer claimed that they did not
- 9:08Speaker 1: starve the children, claiming they were just picky eaters. That
- 9:12Speaker 1: was contradicted by the fact that Michaela nearly doubled her
- 9:16Speaker 1: weight in the six months since her sister's death. At
- 9:19Speaker 1: the beginning of 2016, the girl weighed 30 pounds or 13.5 kilograms.
- 9:25Speaker 1: The foster family she lived with said she had no
- 9:27Speaker 1: problem eating and putting on weight. Obviously, she was not
- 9:31Speaker 1: so picky that it would have been hard to maintain
- 9:33Speaker 1: a healthy weight if fed properly. At the end of
- 9:37Speaker 1: January 2016, Andrew and Hillary Mason were found guilty of
- 9:41Speaker 1: first-degree felony murder and first-degree child abuse. They were both
- 9:46Speaker 1: sentenced to life in prison. It seemed that this was
- 9:50Speaker 1: not an isolated incident for the Masons, though. On February 19, 2018,
- 9:56Speaker 1: three-year-old Matthew Mason was found dead in his bed at
- 10:00Speaker 1: the home of his mother, Amanda Mason, and her boyfriend,
- 10:02Speaker 1: Maurice Houle. An autopsy concluded that Matthew's death was a homicide,
- 10:08Speaker 1: likely resulting from blunt force trauma. Amanda was Andrew Mason's sister,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and it seemed that the pair had grown into some
- 10:16Speaker 1: of the world's worst parents. Amanda and Maurice, who were
- 10:20Speaker 1: no longer dating by then, weren't arrested until April of 2025, though.
- 10:26Speaker 1: It's unclear why there was a delay, but there was
- 10:28Speaker 1: a protest carried out by Matthew's grandparents in an effort
- 10:31Speaker 1: to make the arrest happen. In court, it was revealed
- 10:35Speaker 1: that someone had witnessed Maurice hit Matthew with a croquet stick,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and despite the person reporting the incident, Maurice was never arrested.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Child Protective Services did become involved at that point, but
- 10:47Speaker 1: that clearly didn't do much good. Amanda admitted to police
- 10:51Speaker 1: that she locked the child up without food and suffocated
- 10:54Speaker 1: him with a pillow as punishment. She also admitted to
- 10:57Speaker 1: having hit the boy's head into a wall hard enough
- 11:00Speaker 1: that it broke the drywall. People who knew the couple
- 11:04Speaker 1: said that they believed they killed the boy in order
- 11:06Speaker 1: to make room for a new child they were planning
- 11:09Speaker 1: to have together. Their trial is ongoing, and if found guilty,
- 11:13Speaker 1: they could each face life in prison. Maurice is also
- 11:17Speaker 1: charged with assaulting an officer slash resisting arrest because, of
- 11:21Speaker 1: course he is. Shelby Coffey went through parent reunification courses
- 11:26Speaker 1: and regained custody of Michaela in November of 2015. In
- 11:31Speaker 1: both cases, it seems like the parents didn't want to
- 11:34Speaker 1: care for their children but refused to let anyone else
- 11:37Speaker 1: care for them either. Shelby Coffey wanted to care for
- 11:40Speaker 1: her daughters and Matthew Mason's grandparents offered to take care
- 11:44Speaker 1: of him before his death. It's unimaginable that there are
- 11:47Speaker 1: people who would rather see their own children abused or
- 11:50Speaker 1: dead than being cared for by someone else. That's a
- 11:54Speaker 1: level of control that's usually only desired by monsters. Thanks again,
- 12:17Speaker 1: and be safe.
