Transcript
- 0:00Good morning family.
- 0:23That's where we're going to be spending several weeks for a while, at least until April.
- 0:29Resurrection weekend.
- 0:32This letter, all these letters that Paul writes, interesting, are just powerful, doctrinal field letters.
- 0:42Philippians does not disappoint in this area.
- 0:46We're going to talk about some specific facts concerning this particular letter that I think is very important for us.
- 0:55And, you know, I was thinking about how am I going to, you know, what are we going to deal with, the Old Testament,
- 1:05or are we going to do one of the apostolic letters?
- 1:09I'm like, you know what, we're just going to do Philippians, and then after Philippians we'll do a series on Christ the True and better.
- 1:17So get ready for that. It's going to be a lot of fun.
- 1:19But we got a little while.
- 1:22And even though we've gone through all these letters, it's hard, it's very difficult to kind of pull out everything.
- 1:31Because if we did that, for example, we'd still be in Galatians for another year and a half.
- 1:38So the good news is you can never exhaust the spiritual manna of God's Word.
- 1:45It is so full of stuff.
- 1:48So as we dig into Philippians, we're going to really focus on one particular doctrine.
- 1:55But we will try, I will try my best to hit as many doctrines as I can through this letter
- 2:01and ask God that he would guide us in the fullness of his Word.
- 2:06So let's pray.
- 2:08Father, I want to thank you for this amazing letter that you have given.
- 2:12You are good and faithful and true.
- 2:16Thank you for your call to your people to continue to contend for the faith
- 2:23that what you have started you will complete and that you are the perseverance of the saints.
- 2:30So Lord, as we dig into the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints,
- 2:34and we really start to see your sovereignty and your call to be holy,
- 2:41and the reality of our election before you that all things, all things turn to the good of those love you've been called according to your purpose.
- 2:51Your Word is so amazing.
- 2:55So Lord, as we prepared our hearts for your Word, I pray that you would guide my thoughts
- 3:02and that the words that are shared are the full counsel of your Word
- 3:07and that you are honored and glorified in it.
- 3:10We honor and glory in Jesus' name, Amen.
- 3:13So just a real quick overview.
- 3:15Philippians was written during Paul's, really, let me say it this way.
- 3:23Paul visited the Philippians in Philippi between 49 and 51 AD.
- 3:29It was during his second missionary journey.
- 3:32And that's when this church was planted.
- 3:35What's interesting about this church is some very important details.
- 3:39This is the only letter that Paul really doesn't rebuke them for something that they're doing wrong.
- 3:45Like all the other letters, Paul, like, wrecks them, right?
- 3:48In Ephesians, in Galatians, in Colossians, he just like, you guys are like way out of bounds here.
- 3:54But Philippi, they don't have that issue here.
- 3:57For Philippi, it's more of an exhortation to continue in your walk.
- 4:03He finds complete joy in the people of Philippi, in the church of Philippi.
- 4:10James Montgomery Boyce calls this the joyful letter.
- 4:14What an amazing statement.
- 4:16Sixteen times in Philippians is the word joy mentioned.
- 4:23And we kind of understand why Paul says he uses the word joy a lot in this letter
- 4:29because when you realize that you will be finished, God will complete what he started,
- 4:35you will persevere, what else do you have?
- 4:39I mean, what else should you be worried about?
- 4:41Like, I can have pure joy in all things because God will finish the work he started.
- 4:47And that's really the focus of this letter.
- 4:49I will show this to you shortly.
- 4:52The other interesting letter is he's talking not only to the people of God,
- 4:56but he's talking to the overseers and the deacons.
- 5:00It's interesting.
- 5:01So elders and deacons, this is for you.
- 5:05It's not only just for the entire body of Christ, but this is also for you.
- 5:11Very, very wonderful letter.
- 5:14One of the last facts I want to give you for now is that Paul wrote this when he was in prison.
- 5:22He was locked up, and he counts it joy and actually relishes the fact that he's in prison
- 5:35because the gospel explodes where he's at as a result of this moment.
- 5:41So I want to share that with you.
- 5:43There's a couple of factoids with that.
- 5:45That being said, I want to share some more stuff.
- 5:49Paul's purpose for writing to the Philippian church is found in Philippians 1 verse 6.
- 5:57He says, And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day.
- 6:04In chapter 1 verse 9 through 10,
- 6:06And this is my prayer, that your love may abound more and more with knowledge and all discernment,
- 6:12so that you may approve what is excellent and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.
- 6:21And in chapter 2 verse 13, it says, For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
- 6:31You will accomplish what God has for you to accomplish.
- 6:34You will persevere.
- 6:36Paul's reminder to the saints in Philippi is seen throughout this epistle.
- 6:41And the reminder is perseverance.
- 6:44Here it is. You ready?
- 6:45It's a little journey through the whole letter.
- 6:48Sure.
- 6:50In chapter 1 verse 9, My prayer that your love may abound.
- 6:56In verse 10, And so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.
- 7:01Verse 21, For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain.
- 7:06Verse 24, But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.
- 7:12Verse 25, I will remain and continue with you all for your progress.
- 7:18In verse 27, Let your manner of life be worthy.
- 7:23Verse 27 again, With one mind, that's not me.
- 7:32That's everybody's phone.
- 7:35The only way you're going to turn them off is if you turn off your phones.
- 7:38It's going to beep whether you have it on silent or not.
- 7:42Mine's not beeping.
- 7:45Yeah.
- 7:46So thank you if you guys were able to thank you.
- 7:49That's funny.
- 7:51Beep, beep, beep.
- 7:53With one, that could have been the trumpet call.
- 7:56I'm just saying.
- 7:58It was beep, beep, beep, boosh.
- 8:02But like whacked out, what was that?
- 8:04That was the trumpet call.
- 8:05Who said it couldn't be a beep?
- 8:07Right?
- 8:08Here we go.
- 8:09Verse 27, With one mind striving side by side.
- 8:14Verse 29, It has been granted to you for the sake of Christ that you should not believe in him,
- 8:20but also suffer for his sake.
- 8:22Granted is the word there.
- 8:24Chapter 2, verse 12, As you have always obeyed, so now.
- 8:30This is the idea of continuing.
- 8:32Verse severe, verse chapter 2, 13, It is God who works in you.
- 8:37Verse 16, Hold fast to the word of life in the day of Christ.
- 8:43Chapter 3, verse 12, But I press on to make it my own because Christ Jesus made me his own.
- 8:51Verse 14, Press on toward the goal for the prize.
- 8:56Verse 20, For our citizenship is in heaven and from it we await a savior the day, the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 9:04Verse 21, Who will transform our lowly bodies to be like his glorious body by the power that enables him
- 9:12even to subject all things to himself.
- 9:16Chapter 4, verse 1, Stand firm thus in the Lord.
- 9:20Verse 3, Whose names are in the book of life. Verse 5, The Lord is at hand.
- 9:28Verse 7, He will guard your hearts and minds.
- 9:32Verse 14, I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
- 9:36Verse 19, God will supply every need of yours according to his riches and glory.
- 9:45There's a very clear common thread through this whole letter.
- 9:51It is the perseverance of the saints.
- 9:54The perseverance of the saints ascribes to Almighty God the authority and the ability to see his plan of salvation
- 10:02through to the ultimate purpose which he has intended, namely the eternal salvation of his people.
- 10:10In revealing his salvation, God reveals himself, his sovereign will, love, and grace
- 10:17which are the eternal attributes of God. Heidelberg Seminary.
- 10:23What an amazing doctrine.
- 10:25So not only do we persevere eternally as a guarantee, the Holy Spirit sealing us as a guarantee of our inheritance,
- 10:33but we persevere daily.
- 10:38We persevere daily. He will finish what he has started.
- 10:44So let's start. Chapter 1, verse 1.
- 10:47Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, dulos.
- 10:54This word, servants, is slave.
- 10:57Doctrine number 1, the doctrine of Christian slavery.
- 11:02You're like, that's a bad word. It's a wonderful word.
- 11:06Why are we slaves to Christ? Because he purchased us with his own blood.
- 11:11We are no longer owned by sin, but we are owned by Christ.
- 11:18And we no longer belong to ourselves, but we belong to Christ.
- 11:23That's a slave.
- 11:25Thank God we have a good master.
- 11:28The doctrine of Christian slavery.
- 11:31The next we see here, it says, to all the saints.
- 11:35This word, saints, literally means the chosen and holy ones.
- 11:40Chosen and holy ones. That's what the word saint is.
- 11:43This isn't just, this is not for the Catholics.
- 11:47You don't have to be a special person to be a saint.
- 11:51And trust me, some of the saints that the Catholics say are saints aren't saints.
- 11:58This is you. If you know Christ, you're a saint in Christ.
- 12:03You're a chosen and holy one in Christ who are at Philippi, here it is,
- 12:09with the overseers and deacons.
- 12:13Isn't that a nice statement?
- 12:16What is God saying here?
- 12:18He says, grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 12:23Here's what Paul's saying.
- 12:24Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ, have come to you people of Philippi
- 12:30and the overseers and deacons who oversee and serve the people of Philippi.
- 12:36God says to you grace and peace.
- 12:40I come on behalf of the King and the King has given his greeting to you.
- 12:46You are important to him.
- 12:48That's what Paul's saying here.
- 12:50Every letter that Paul does, he gives the grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 12:56Why? Because we are his people.
- 12:58Paul is speaking on behalf of the King.
- 13:01And that is the one important statement.
- 13:03People probably read this over and over again and go, what's the point?
- 13:06It's the same greeting. Exactly.
- 13:09Because this greeting's not from Paul, it's from him to you.
- 13:14God says grace to you and my peace be with you.
- 13:19Isn't that what Jesus said?
- 13:22Every time he spoke to his disciples, grace and peace be unto you.
- 13:26Interesting, right?
- 13:28Verse 3.
- 13:29I thank my God in all my remembrance of you,
- 13:33always in every prayer of mine, for you are making my prayer with joy.
- 13:40In other words, Paul's saying, listen, I think about you often.
- 13:44And every time I think about you, I am filled with joy to think about you.
- 13:50It's the one group of people that he doesn't have to worry much about.
- 13:56He doesn't have to think about what's happening.
- 13:58He doesn't have to deal with any false teaching.
- 14:01He doesn't have to rebuke them because people are abandoning his faith.
- 14:04No, he's encouraged by them because they walk consistently and continue in the gospel.
- 14:11So what does a shepherd do?
- 14:14He encourages. Keep it up.
- 14:17You know, it's a that-a-boy kind of thing.
- 14:20Now, verse 5.
- 14:23Because of your partnership, here is why his joy, why he's always remembering them with joy,
- 14:29because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
- 14:34from the first time I came to you and I shared the gospel with you, you have continued in it.
- 14:40How many churches today can claim that?
- 14:46We are one.
- 14:48There's a reason why Mountaintin Church has existed for 140 years come this March.
- 14:55Continue in the gospel.
- 14:58If you continue in the gospel, the church will be here another 140 years if the Lord tarries.
- 15:04You abandon the gospel, watch how quick the church goes away.
- 15:08There are many churches throughout the country who are closing or are just open
- 15:13because they tickle the ears of people.
- 15:19Verse 6.
- 15:21And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
- 15:31In other words, this is the purpose of the letter.
- 15:34God, what God has started in you, he will complete in you.
- 15:38I am confident of this.
- 15:40How do I know this? Because you have contended, have walked, have continued in the gospel
- 15:47which I've came and preached to you from the first day until now.
- 15:51You have not abandoned the full gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 15:59Is it right for me to feel this way about you all because I hold you in my heart?
- 16:09For you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment
- 16:16and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.
- 16:21It is right for him.
- 16:23He is thankful.
- 16:26That's the one thing that every elder desires for you,
- 16:32to contend and fight and continue in the full gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 16:40What can we do in a country that has abandoned God?
- 16:46Contend for the gospel.
- 16:50Contend for the gospel.
- 16:51The days are not going to get better.
- 16:54But we have the hope of Christ and that there are people who will come to Christ.
- 17:00The kingdom of God is still growing.
- 17:03Though all the other nations are failing, there's one nation that will not.
- 17:08The kingdom of God will continue.
- 17:11It is growing every single day.
- 17:14We have a king and we have a place and he is good and that place he's made for us.
- 17:21That we may dwell with him.
- 17:24Now, here's where things start getting exciting.
- 17:29If we continue to defend and confirm the gospel, this is Paul's proclamation.
- 17:37He says, for God is my witness how I yearn for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.
- 17:44Man, it's like, I know you guys are experiencing it because I hear it quite a bit from you guys.
- 17:51I can't wait to get to church.
- 17:53I know.
- 17:56I'd rather be here.
- 17:58I'd do church all day and hang out with you guys.
- 18:00Like, I love this stuff, right?
- 18:03And Rachel's going, no, you need to go home and get some sleep.
- 18:07But that's Paul's desire.
- 18:09He's like, man, you guys get it.
- 18:12I just want to hang out with you.
- 18:15Like, the rest of these churches are driving me crazy.
- 18:18That's what Paul's saying.
- 18:20Why can't we just do the right thing?
- 18:23Well, Paul is so excited about this church.
- 18:29The hard part for Paul is that he can't go.
- 18:33He's locked up.
- 18:35So principle number one.
- 18:39God's people persevere by the love of Christ.
- 18:44God's people persevere by the love of Christ.
- 18:47Through the love of God abounding in our lives abundantly,
- 18:52we can know clearly what is excellent.
- 18:55It's the love of Christ that we persevere.
- 18:58And it's because of this love that we can clearly know what is the excellency of Christ.
- 19:07Philippians chapter one, verse nine through 11 says this.
- 19:10And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more with knowledge and all discernment.
- 19:18That word with is actually shouldn't be translated as with.
- 19:21Because that's not what that word is in the original language.
- 19:24The word in the original language is in.
- 19:27Now let's use that word.
- 19:29It says it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and all discernment.
- 19:36Makes a lot more sense, doesn't it?
- 19:38In knowledge and all discernment so that you may approve what is excellent.
- 19:44If I'm in the knowledge and all discernment of God, then I can approve the excellency of Christ.
- 19:49I can know what is excellent.
- 19:52And so as a result of knowing the excellency of Christ, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.
- 20:00Filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.
- 20:08What's interesting about Paul is Paul throws, as he makes this declarative, he's stating this statement.
- 20:17He always does a sentence in a sentence, which I like when Paul does that.
- 20:22So I'm going to share a sentence within what Paul just said.
- 20:25And this is what it says.
- 20:27So you, Philippians, that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and all discernment.
- 20:33That you may approve what is excellent.
- 20:37Be pure and blameless, filled with the fruit of righteousness.
- 20:43That if we walk in the love and we abound in the love of God and we are doing it in the knowledge and discernment.
- 20:50And we are approving the excellency of Christ and we're walking in purity and blamelessness.
- 20:56That we will be filled with the fruit of righteousness.
- 21:00The fruit of righteousness will be clearly seen.
- 21:03That's what he's saying here.
- 21:05What an amazing statement.
- 21:08Second principle, perseverance in and through suffering advances the gospel.
- 21:13So we have to have love, the love of Christ to be persevering.
- 21:18And if we have a love of Christ and we're persevering, then this perseverance will get us through.
- 21:25And then as a result of that perseverance, the gospel advances.
- 21:30Here it is. Perseverance in and through suffering advances the gospel.
- 21:34How many of us are willing to suffer?
- 21:37Are any of you guys willing to suffer?
- 21:39We kind of like don't really like suffering.
- 21:42Because it hurts.
- 21:44I mean I don't know about you.
- 21:46There are times when I was not very happy about suffering.
- 21:50Have you ever thought about what suffering for the gospel actually does for the kingdom?
- 21:56No.
- 21:57Because at the moment you're only thinking about your suffering and your pain.
- 22:01What you end up realizing is that it's far more valuable than you can ever imagine.
- 22:06And this is what Paul says in Philippians chapter 1, verse 12 through 14.
- 22:11I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
- 22:21Do you hear that statement?
- 22:23That this thing that I'm going through has made the gospel even more popular, even more effective.
- 22:33Who would have thought that suffering makes the gospel more effective?
- 22:38Because when you're suffering and you're living out this Christian life through your suffering,
- 22:46and they go, why are you so different?
- 22:49Why aren't you complaining?
- 22:51Why do you find joy in all this stuff?
- 22:55Because it's Christ.
- 22:57Verse 13, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard
- 23:04and all of the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ.
- 23:10Can you imagine that?
- 23:12His imprisonment has gotten word out to the entire imperial guard.
- 23:18Now, do you know how many that is?
- 23:22Thousands.
- 23:25Everybody's talking about it.
- 23:28Like this dude is in a ditch with metal bars that he can't get out of, right?
- 23:34And more than likely, all of the muck and feces and everything else that they throw out goes right through his imprisonment.
- 23:46And all he can do is be chained up to another guard and proclaim the goodness of God
- 23:52and be joyful for what is happening.
- 23:55And as a result, everybody's talking about, yo, this guy is not upset about this.
- 24:00What is different about this fellow?
- 24:03I mean, pretty amazing.
- 24:07Verse 14, it says, and most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment,
- 24:15are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
- 24:20So as a result, there are believers around all of these areas who have heard about his imprisonment are so confident.
- 24:29It's like if Paul can do this, then there's no reason why I can't preach the gospel and so suffer on the sake of the gospel.
- 24:38I mean, he's going through far more than I could ever imagine.
- 24:41And he's finding joy in preaching the gospel, and people are getting saved.
- 24:45Like, that is amazing.
- 24:47That is what Paul's saying here.
- 24:50So suffering for the gospel advances the gospel and builds confidence in others to be confident in proclaiming the amazing gospel of Christ.
- 25:01Suffering never goes to waste.
- 25:03Christ always wins in our suffering.
- 25:09Whoever thought about that suffering would be so wonderful.
- 25:13Paul says, this imprisonment that has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
- 25:18It has become known throughout the whole Imperial Garden to all the rest.
- 25:23And most of the brothers have become confident in the Lord and are much more bold to speak the word without fear because of this imprisonment.
- 25:33Who would have thought that perseverance through suffering would have produced this kind of fruit?
- 25:39We think that the fruits that we're looking for are blessings, but there is no greater blessing than suffering.
- 25:48It produces for the kingdom people, and it produces in you Christ-like behavior.
- 25:56You become more like him when you suffer.
- 25:59So suffer with joy and preach the gospel.
- 26:04Third, perseverance is never for naught.
- 26:09Yes, it's one of those English words.
- 26:12Perseverance is never for naught.
- 26:14Doesn't that sound good?
- 26:16I figured.
- 26:18It sounded good to me.
- 26:19I had to write the word naught.
- 26:21I spelled it wrong at first.
- 26:24It's a joke.
- 26:25So perseverance is never for naught, but always for his glory.
- 26:30The reality of our suffering has a greater purpose, the preaching of Christ and him crucified.
- 26:36Some may think it's a way for revenge and others out of sincere heart, but either way, Christ and his gospel is being proclaimed.
- 26:46So this is what I say.
- 26:48There's a lot of churches in our areas, a lot of churches around the country, a lot of churches around the world.
- 26:54And not all of them preach the gospel as effectively as they should and the responsibility to declare it clearly in the full counsel of his word.
- 27:04But what does it matter?
- 27:06As Paul says in chapter 1, verse 15 through 18, some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill.
- 27:17The latter, those of goodwill, do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
- 27:26The former, the envy and rivalry, proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment.
- 27:38What then?
- 27:39Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed and in that I rejoice.
- 27:47I don't care as long as Christ is proclaimed.
- 27:52Because one way or another, there's one thing we'll do here at Mal-Eaten, and that is to teach the full counsel of God's word and to preach the whole gospel.
- 28:02And to show a God who stands on behalf of us, a warrior who has already won the war, not a Sisyphi Jesus.
- 28:15That is what the Philippians understood.
- 28:18This is Christ in him crucified.
- 28:20There is nothing greater.
- 28:23We will see, clearly see this as we go through the rest of this letter.
- 28:28So what should we do?
- 28:32How should you persevere?
- 28:34For some of us, because we do stand in reform theology, say what's the point of preaching the gospel?
- 28:43Because God has commanded you to do it.
- 28:46We don't stop preaching the gospel because we think everybody's in is in.
- 28:50That's not the point.
- 28:52Your responsibility to the King of Kings is to obey the command of the King.
- 28:58You've been given marching orders.
- 29:00Go and preach the gospel.
- 29:03That is how God's people come to him.
- 29:06Faith comes by hearing and hearing that of the word of Christ.
- 29:09How will they hear unless somebody is sent?
- 29:11How will they be sent unless they are called?
- 29:14And if you're called, how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.
- 29:18For faith comes by hearing and hearing that of the word of Christ.
- 29:22We all have a responsibility.
- 29:24Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, which we will read in chapter two in several weeks from now.
- 29:34Purpose to preach the gospel.
- 29:38Enjoy your suffering for the sake of Christ.
- 29:41It is not, it does not go away for it.
- 29:44It's for a purpose.
- 29:47Contend for the gospel.
- 29:51A lot of times we say be a good Berean, study the gospel.
- 29:55Be a good Philippian, preach the gospel.
- 29:59Lord, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 30:02To you be honor and glory forever.
- 30:04We thank you that you are the King.
- 30:06We thank you Lord that we can and have and will persevere because of the love of Christ.
- 30:13And that through the love of Christ we can persevere through our suffering, which will advance the gospel.
- 30:18And as a result of advancing the gospel and the truth of your word, if we contend for the full gospel,
- 30:24regardless of what's being preached out there by anyone else,
- 30:28we know that you are being proclaimed in the whole earth that you are the God of all creation.
- 30:34We thank you and we praise you.
- 30:36May we walk in the truth of our perseverance, which is found in you and you only.
- 30:41We praise you in Jesus' name, Amen.
