- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey, everybody.
- 0:28Good morning. I have a project that I've been
- 0:31working on for a while and it's genealogy project.
- 0:35And the whole thing started off very simply because someone in
- 0:40my mother's family had started off doing a family tree many
- 0:45years ago. And somehow throughout the
- 0:47years, I had shown interest in it and I got a copy of it.
- 0:52And it was only the length of it was only on one side.
- 0:57It was for my mother's father, my grandfather, and it was one
- 1:02side of his family that they had done it for it.
- 1:05Now, obviously, without ancestry, these things can take
- 1:08a really long time. And having ancestry, you know,
- 1:12as a part of it, ancestry.com is what I'm talking about.
- 1:15And this is not a promotion for them.
- 1:16This is just me telling you what I'm using.
- 1:20I decided that I was going to hang on to that piece of paper
- 1:23many years ago. And I really like the idea that
- 1:28in that we found out that we had relatives that were on the
- 1:32Mayflower and we were direct descendants of Miles Standish.
- 1:37So that was fascinating to me. And I was like, wow, that's so
- 1:40cool. But I really don't know much
- 1:42about it. And quite frankly, when I was a
- 1:44little girl and we went on a field trip to Plymouth
- 1:47Plantation, when I grew up in Massachusetts, I was horrified.
- 1:52I was probably 4 years old and we went into a wax museum and
- 1:58the wax museum was scary as hell to me.
- 2:01I freaked out, ran out. It was a quite the spectacle.
- 2:04I did not like it and I did not want to go back.
- 2:08I did not want to know anything about it because I was so
- 2:11freaked out about it. And my not, my mother was not
- 2:14interested in this at all. I think it's very interesting
- 2:17how my mother was just like, Oh well, if we were, we were like,
- 2:20she just wasn't interested in it.
- 2:22So it wasn't pushed or in any direction on me.
- 2:26But I kept the papers and I had no idea why.
- 2:29So Fast forward, I start working on it over the last two years
- 2:35because I got my DNA tested to find out what my, my roots were,
- 2:41because there were, there's always rumors in every family
- 2:44about, oh, well, you have this in, we have somebody like this.
- 2:48And I, I had an uncle that kept telling me we had a Native
- 2:53American in our family. And I was like, there's no way.
- 2:57I don't believe that. So finally I got the DNA done
- 3:01and there was no way. There's nothing in there that
- 3:04shows that, not one drop that shows that.
- 3:06But that's not here nor there. I started using Ancestry about 5
- 3:14months ago. I got the actual membership and
- 3:17I started digging in and going back and really finding out,
- 3:22like because you can see newspaper articles, you can see
- 3:25all kinds of things. And I got really into knowing
- 3:28and I wanted to build it out on all sides.
- 3:31Like not just my mother's father and my mother's mother, because
- 3:36my mother's mother's side was completely shut down.
- 3:39Like it was. I only knew that what tragic
- 3:43thing happened to her when she was little and she didn't have
- 3:46anything to do with her father. I never met him.
- 3:48I didn't know anything about him and it was just one of those
- 3:52things where they had shut it off and no one talked about it.
- 3:56So I decided I wanted to know more about that.
- 4:00Where did he come from? All of this?
- 4:02So it was an expansive and then jumped over to my father and his
- 4:05parents and so forth and so on. And so see how far could I push
- 4:09it just doing it online and going through it now, that's not
- 4:13the point of all this story and the interesting things that I
- 4:15found not that's not the point. The point is that by doing this,
- 4:19something interesting has happened for me.
- 4:21Something really, really interesting has happened for me.
- 4:24And that thing is that I have really discovered that.
- 4:29I can't believe what some of these people went through.
- 4:33Like when you look back and you see how many deaths of children
- 4:38there were, how many people that came over, like, you know, just
- 4:43just basic stuff like studying the things on the Mayflower and
- 4:47as they came over here. I'm befuddled by the fact that
- 4:54we'd ever took that into consideration.
- 4:56Like no one ever talked about that in a way.
- 4:59Or maybe it's just that I have matured in a way that says, wow,
- 5:02these people went through hell. And I'm complaining that I have
- 5:05to, you know, work three days in a week or four days in a week.
- 5:10And what, what did these people go through?
- 5:13I mean, I sat last night and I, I cuz I really did a lot of it
- 5:16yesterday and I started imagining what it must have been
- 5:19like to be on the Mayflower and like a simple thing like, you
- 5:23know, OK. What do you do when you have to
- 5:25go to the bathroom? How do they handle that?
- 5:27What, what was the smell like on that boat?
- 5:30How did they get fresh water? I mean, they travelled for two,
- 5:34I think it was 66 days, something like that.
- 5:37But that's an account like, oh, I don't know if it's accurate or
- 5:40not, but let's just assume it was 66 days on a boat the size
- 5:46of the Mayflower with 102 people.
- 5:48I mean, that is crowded. And what do you do with all the
- 5:52waste? What do you do?
- 5:53What are the smells? What are the arguments?
- 5:55What was the ocean like? And then they had a beam break
- 5:58in the boat. And you know, I mean, they had a
- 6:02death deaths on the boat. So I mean, think about the
- 6:05enclosed amount. And they were brave enough to
- 6:08get on it, to come here and not just once, but boat after boat
- 6:11after boat. So that tells you about what
- 6:14their life must have been like to be willing to do this over
- 6:17and over and over again. So the point that I'm trying to
- 6:21make here is that changed my perspective.
- 6:24So if I'm getting even a little whiny, I'm going to remind
- 6:27myself of this. And I'm going to be like, hey,
- 6:29when you sit and you look around at your beautiful place and you
- 6:32might feel a certain way, put your big girl pants on and stop
- 6:36whining. And it's a great reminder.
- 6:39So I don't know if you have something like that, but
- 6:41hopefully you do. You can remember it because I
- 6:45will tell you this little experiment of mine has changed
- 6:48me. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:50you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:52Bye.
