- 0:11Speaker 1: Patriots Training Camp.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:17Speaker 1: have you covered?
- 0:18Speaker 3: What did I miss yesterday?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Now here to review today's practice? The writers of Patriots
- 0:22Speaker 1: dot Com.
- 0:24Speaker 4: All right, welcome into our second episode of the Patriots
- 0:28Speaker 4: Training Campcast for twenty twenty four. Evan Lazar, Paul Parello, Mike.
- 0:31Speaker 4: You so just got off the field for the second
- 0:33Speaker 4: practice and guys, not as much fireworks today. There weren't
- 0:36Speaker 4: any big plays, not a lot, you know, not a
- 0:38Speaker 4: lot to really hang your hat on today, especially get
- 0:40Speaker 4: excited about on the offensive side of the ball. A
- 0:42Speaker 4: little bit of a blah practice, I would call it.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Maybe, Yeah, I'm trying not to overreact to these initial practices.
- 0:48Speaker 2: We're not they're not in pads or really not even
- 0:50Speaker 2: in shells or helmets and T shirts and shorts right now.
- 0:53Speaker 2: So you don't want to sound any alarms about the offense.
- 0:57Speaker 2: But some of the things that we were concerned about
- 1:00Speaker 2: coming into the season on paper are showing up a
- 1:03Speaker 2: little bit in this practice today where there isn't a
- 1:05Speaker 2: ton going on down the field, and a lot of
- 1:07Speaker 2: the downfield throws are contested. You know, Jalen Polk down
- 1:11Speaker 2: the sideline with Marcus Jones all over him, or Hunter
- 1:14Speaker 2: Henry Jabriel Peppers broke up a pass for him a
- 1:16Speaker 2: similar type of route down the sideline, and those types
- 1:19Speaker 2: of plays are just not hitting at a high rate
- 1:22Speaker 2: right now. And it's a lot of contested fifty to
- 1:25Speaker 2: fifty type balls, and you just would have liked to
- 1:27Speaker 2: have seen a little bit more of what we saw
- 1:29Speaker 2: from Jalen Rigor yesterday, which was just running wide open
- 1:32Speaker 2: behind the defense. But it's a good defense and you're
- 1:35Speaker 2: not necessarily going to see that all the time against
- 1:37Speaker 2: the Patriots starters. But overall, a clunky day for the offense.
- 1:41Speaker 2: But I don't think it's anything that we didn't already
- 1:43Speaker 2: know about where they're at.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I would agree. Overall, there weren't a
- 1:47Speaker 3: lot of flash plays, and the ones that the feud
- 1:49Speaker 3: that did happen were on the defensive side of the ball,
- 1:51Speaker 3: and the ones that Evan mentioned were the ones that
- 1:53Speaker 3: stood out to me. I do think there was some indications,
- 1:57Speaker 3: at least that there were some other guys getting involved.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Taekwon Thornton. I didn't really notice at all on opening day.
- 2:03Speaker 3: He cut a handful of passes today from both Jacoby
- 2:07Speaker 3: Brissett and Drake May. We should probably add that Brissette
- 2:10Speaker 3: again took the lead reps and then you know, Drake
- 2:14Speaker 3: May followed little slight twist after that. Joe Milton went
- 2:18Speaker 3: before Bailey Zappi. All four took reps, but I thought
- 2:23Speaker 3: it was interesting that Milton went third in Zappi fourth today,
- 2:26Speaker 3: but I would agree with that overall assessment. More of
- 2:29Speaker 3: a defensive day today, yeah.
- 2:30Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I mean, yesterday we saw Joe Milton get a little
- 2:33Speaker 4: I mean, not a lot of action, but got some
- 2:34Speaker 4: like mop up reps, almost completed a couple passes thrown
- 2:37Speaker 4: in time looked okay, seeing almost like hey, let's give
- 2:39Speaker 4: him a little bit more of a shot today. I
- 2:41Speaker 4: want to talk too, though, about Jacoby Brissette, because while
- 2:44Speaker 4: it wasn't outstanding, I think we all agree that there
- 2:46Speaker 4: were some moments where Jacoby Brissett just looked like he
- 2:49Speaker 4: was running the offense the way he need to be run,
- 2:51Speaker 4: hitting the back foot, getting the ball out. That's what
- 2:54Speaker 4: That's why he's here right, so he can run the
- 2:56Speaker 4: offense on time.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no doubt about it that his timing and
- 3:00Speaker 2: just approach to the offense in general, he's a pro.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I mean, he's made forty eight starts in the NFL,
- 3:04Speaker 2: so it's gonna be a little bit better in those
- 3:07Speaker 2: regards to Drake May, and that might be enough at
- 3:11Speaker 2: least initially for him to hold on to the starting
- 3:13Speaker 2: job going into the season. But the one thing that
- 3:16Speaker 2: I consistently feel what Jakobe p said is that there's
- 3:19Speaker 2: this not a whole lot of playmaking or dynamic element
- 3:22Speaker 2: down the field from him, whereas with Drake May, even
- 3:25Speaker 2: though it might be not as perfect in terms of
- 3:28Speaker 2: the timing and all that, which I'm sure the coaches
- 3:30Speaker 2: probably see even more than we do, you have that
- 3:33Speaker 2: threat of on any given drop back you could have
- 3:36Speaker 2: a fifty yard bomb in there somewhere. I don't necessarily
- 3:39Speaker 2: feel that way with Jacob PRIs said, but as politics
- 3:41Speaker 2: to say, there was a lot a couple plays there
- 3:43Speaker 2: today where it looked like a play in a game.
- 3:46Speaker 2: You know that, Okay, you know three step drop balls
- 3:49Speaker 2: out hit the back of the foot. Everybody runs their
- 3:51Speaker 2: routes properly and we have a play right, and that
- 3:55Speaker 2: happens maybe a little bit more assignment with Jakob PRIs
- 3:59Speaker 2: said at this point, no, I totally understand what you're saying.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Though.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It looks like it happened on a Sunday and we
- 4:04Speaker 2: had a few of those today.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and a couple of bookkeeping things. Antonio Gibson looks
- 4:08Speaker 3: like he was taking off of NFI and Girodmeo said
- 4:13Speaker 3: yesterday that it wouldn't be a long term thing expecting
- 4:15Speaker 3: him back. He didn't have his helmet with him. He
- 4:17Speaker 3: didn't really take part in the practice, but he was
- 4:19Speaker 3: in uniform out there did some lower rehab field work.
- 4:24Speaker 3: So he's you know, obviously back on the field and
- 4:27Speaker 3: closer to getting back full strength. That's a good sign
- 4:31Speaker 3: on the flip side. Devon Godshaw, we didn't see him
- 4:35Speaker 3: for about the first hour of practice at all. He
- 4:38Speaker 3: came out later, No, helmet, didn't really do a whole lot.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Now there's a report, I think mass Live tweeted out
- 4:44Speaker 3: that Christian Barmore might be dealing with an illness and
- 4:47Speaker 3: he was limited. He didn't really do much in the
- 4:50Speaker 3: full eleven on eleven work, but I don't know, maybe
- 4:53Speaker 3: Godshaw's dealing with something along those lines too, or maybe
- 4:56Speaker 3: it's just an indication of the contract stuff that and
- 5:00Speaker 3: it's ugly head.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Yeah, we did hear from Jude On yesterday who kind
- 5:03Speaker 4: of expressed, you know, he'd like a new deal. Clearly
- 5:05Speaker 4: looks like it's heading down that road with gotchall Maybe
- 5:07Speaker 4: he's going to do what Judon did last year, the
- 5:10Speaker 4: hold in. It's the new InVogue thing to do.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Ye.
- 5:12Speaker 4: My biggest question guys is just how does this all
- 5:14Speaker 4: resolve itself. We don't want this hanging over the team's
- 5:17Speaker 4: head as we go into the season, especially Paul. With
- 5:20Speaker 4: Judon who you know, I mean, he's a valuable player.
- 5:22Speaker 4: He is, he's going to be thirty two in a
- 5:23Speaker 4: few weeks, but he's got some juice and he just
- 5:25Speaker 4: he's the pass rusher that they need off the edge.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and I do think it's important, you know, because
- 5:29Speaker 3: this is a new regime. You want to get off
- 5:31Speaker 3: to a you know, a good start and really at
- 5:34Speaker 3: least put your best foot forward, have the best personnel
- 5:37Speaker 3: that you can out there. So I wouldn't advocate trading
- 5:39Speaker 3: him now, Like if you were going to deal him
- 5:41Speaker 3: I would have said, you know, get it done. You know,
- 5:44Speaker 3: earlier in the offseason where you had a chance to
- 5:46Speaker 3: sort of make a plan to replace him. Now I
- 5:49Speaker 3: would I would go into the season. Maybe, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 3: if he's playing well, he's sort of a leader on
- 5:54Speaker 3: that front seven and you can get going that way,
- 5:56Speaker 3: and if you're not having the success as a team
- 5:59Speaker 3: that you hope, then maybe you can revisit any any
- 6:02Speaker 3: kind of trade possibilities you mentioned. He spoke yesterday, he said,
- 6:05Speaker 3: you know, he doesn't he's not asking for a trade.
- 6:07Speaker 3: He doesn't want to be traded, but the contract is
- 6:10Speaker 3: definitely an issue.
- 6:11Speaker 4: I mean, I just want to highlight a couple of guys.
- 6:13Speaker 4: You know, it stood out a little bit today. Started
- 6:15Speaker 4: with Jahem Bel rookie seventh round pick, guy that I
- 6:18Speaker 4: know you were high on, had him on your big board,
- 6:20Speaker 4: but we saw him start to get a little bit
- 6:22Speaker 4: involved today. Paul mentioned Marcus Jones earlier kind of active
- 6:25Speaker 4: as in the slot, a guy that we kind of
- 6:28Speaker 4: an unknown commodity. We know he's a returner. You know,
- 6:30Speaker 4: he's been injured. We haven't seen a lot of him.
- 6:33Speaker 4: And also Taekwon Thornton, who we mentioned you know, just
- 6:35Speaker 4: a little bit more active. What did you see from
- 6:36Speaker 4: most of you guys?
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, just started with Marcus Jones two days in a
- 6:39Speaker 2: row now, where he's been the top slot corner nickel
- 6:41Speaker 2: corner with the Patriots defense, and for right now, on paper,
- 6:46Speaker 2: it would seem like he would be the inside track
- 6:49Speaker 2: or have the inside track to being that top nickel
- 6:52Speaker 2: corner and when they go through true corners, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 2: not talking about big nickel or getting the safeties involved
- 6:58Speaker 2: and stuff like that. He's definitely the guy in man coverage.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I feel the most confident about inside other than obviously
- 7:05Speaker 2: John Jones, but you think he can play more on
- 7:08Speaker 2: the outside still. So I've been encouraged what I've seen
- 7:11Speaker 2: from Marcus Jones. Got a couple hands on a couple
- 7:13Speaker 2: passes over the last few days as well, so he's
- 7:16Speaker 2: had good coverage. We'll see if he can keep it up.
- 7:18Speaker 2: And to your point about Taekwon Thorton, it's just we
- 7:22Speaker 2: do we quit it or do we not? You know,
- 7:24Speaker 2: like you just every day he pulls you back in
- 7:26Speaker 2: and he has one of these types of days. Now,
- 7:28Speaker 2: it was a lot of underneath stuff. It wasn't anything
- 7:30Speaker 2: down the field, We're not that four two eight was
- 7:33Speaker 2: not on full display necessarily, but he did lead the
- 7:37Speaker 2: team with four catches and team drills here today, so
- 7:39Speaker 2: there's certainly something that taekwon Thornton. Every couple of days
- 7:43Speaker 2: we'll have one of these types of practices that make
- 7:46Speaker 2: you believe. Again, I'm not sure I'm totally there, but
- 7:49Speaker 2: we're getting there then, just quickly. But jahe Bell would
- 7:52Speaker 2: stood out with to me with him was how much
- 7:53Speaker 2: they were moving him around, and that was something that
- 7:55Speaker 2: he did a lot in college. And if he can
- 7:58Speaker 2: learn the playbook to a point where he's able to
- 8:01Speaker 2: run routes from various alignments, then that will help him
- 8:04Speaker 2: get on the roster.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Pull anybody else that caught your eye today just in
- 8:07Speaker 4: terms of I mean, I know it was there's not
- 8:09Speaker 4: a lot of big plays, but.
- 8:10Speaker 3: No, there weren't. And you know, I'm sort of watching
- 8:13Speaker 3: that secondary to see the different you know, combinations and
- 8:16Speaker 3: what I've seen most of if you guys have seen different,
- 8:18Speaker 3: correct me. I've seen Gonzales and Jones with Marcus Jones
- 8:22Speaker 3: in the slot in some of alex Austin, but not
- 8:25Speaker 3: as much as we saw in the spring. So I
- 8:27Speaker 3: wonder if like it's just it's Jonathan Jones and it's
- 8:31Speaker 3: it's Christian Gonzales and then you know, everybody else's.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Marks of the World.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Yeah, like I thought there was a chance that maybe,
- 8:38Speaker 3: you know, with the amount that we saw Austin in
- 8:40Speaker 3: the spring, that they maybe had designs of him being
- 8:43Speaker 3: on the outside and Jonathan Jones being in the slot.
- 8:45Speaker 3: So far, only two days, I haven't really seen that.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, well only two days. But hey, we
- 8:49Speaker 4: got what do we have? Eleven more practices to go.
- 8:52Speaker 4: We're just getting started here. There's obviously things moving, dude. Yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 4: the trains moving, and we're expecting pads to be Monday.
- 8:56Speaker 4: So we're gonna have practices on Friday, practices on Sunday,
- 9:00Speaker 4: and then we'll get to hopefully a little bit ramp
- 9:01Speaker 4: things up a little bit. Guys, little contact contact them
- 9:04Speaker 4: on the smack of the pads, the smack of the helmets.
