- 0:00Speaker 1: And now Move the Sticks with Daniel, Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Hey, it's up, friends, welcome back another episode of Move
- 0:09Speaker 2: the Sticks Off and running.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Here, Redlis, Bucky Brooks with you. DJ is putting his.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Tool belt on, he's got his plumber hat out. He
- 0:20Speaker 2: is fixing some homeowner issues in his house. So he'll
- 0:25Speaker 2: be back later this week. But we are holding down
- 0:28Speaker 2: the fort ear a fun episode after another double header
- 0:31Speaker 2: on Monday night. Now in the books. Plus we've got
- 0:34Speaker 2: our rookie draft coming up. Our Coordinator of the Week
- 0:37Speaker 2: is on the way as well, and there's some really
- 0:39Speaker 2: interesting things to dig into here, Bucky with these Monday nighters.
- 0:43Speaker 2: But you're back from London. Was not a great showing
- 0:47Speaker 2: from the Jacks, but just wanted to jump in.
- 0:51Speaker 3: And a quick touch point on that one.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I am curious because we'll get into this with Coordinator
- 0:56Speaker 2: of the Week. How did you observe the way I mean,
- 0:59Speaker 2: the the Jags are like, you know, old hat at
- 1:02Speaker 2: this going overseas in London, right, I mean, been there,
- 1:04Speaker 2: done that almost every year. It feels like Rams did
- 1:07Speaker 2: something a little bit differently this time around. Kind of
- 1:10Speaker 2: curious just how you saw this process with Liam Cohen
- 1:14Speaker 2: International travel playing the game.
- 1:16Speaker 3: How it all kind of worked out.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Let me tell you about the RAMS process first, because
- 1:20Speaker 1: the RAMS process was very similar to my process.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:23Speaker 1: So the RAMS, they were in Baltimore. They probably us
- 1:27Speaker 1: all week in Baltimore. Then they go over Friday night
- 1:30Speaker 1: to get their Saturday morning. If you think about it,
- 1:34Speaker 1: rit they basically im reverse a little bit. They basically
- 1:37Speaker 1: just did like a west coast trip, you know what
- 1:39Speaker 1: I mean. Like, rather than doing all the things and
- 1:42Speaker 1: making it a bigger deal, they just said, Okay, we'll
- 1:44Speaker 1: leave early.
- 1:45Speaker 4: They got their early Saturday. They played on Sunday.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Local time is a two thirty kick, So if you
- 1:51Speaker 1: get there early, it gives you twenty eight thirty hours
- 1:55Speaker 1: to kind of acclimate and go play. I landed at
- 1:59Speaker 1: five fifty on Saturday night, had to get up. I
- 2:03Speaker 1: was a bit of a fog like that night, go
- 2:05Speaker 1: to sleep, wake up, And in the middle of the game,
- 2:08Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, if I had to play, what
- 2:11Speaker 1: would I do differently? I was like, well, one, I'd
- 2:13Speaker 1: be a little amped up being adrenaline.
- 2:15Speaker 4: I would consume a little caffeine and kind of.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Get going, and you can kind of use your jenne
- 2:21Speaker 1: rush to get through the game. Jackson goes over early
- 2:24Speaker 1: and they're there like a Monday Tuesday, like it's a
- 2:27Speaker 1: long week and you can kind of I want to say,
- 2:30Speaker 1: luy yourself into sleep. But I just felt like the
- 2:33Speaker 1: energy was different from both teams. The Rams were on
- 2:36Speaker 1: it right from the jump, and it kind of felt
- 2:38Speaker 1: like almost like you tell your kids, Hey, this is.
- 2:42Speaker 4: What we're doing. You can get there, You're gonna have fun,
- 2:44Speaker 4: and we're gonna enjoy it. Right, Yes, we're going. And
- 2:47Speaker 4: that's how they approached it.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I think it's really interesting kind of talking to us
- 2:52Speaker 2: and folks around the organization. I think it might become
- 2:54Speaker 2: a model what the Rams did for try, especially for
- 2:58Speaker 2: West Coast teams that are kind of breaking it up
- 3:00Speaker 2: right going west to east and then spending time there.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I think science.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Tells you that two days before is some of your
- 3:09Speaker 2: most important sleep for a big event. However, I can
- 3:13Speaker 2: attest to this too, because every Thursday night I'll do
- 3:16Speaker 2: the post game for Prime video. I jump on a
- 3:20Speaker 2: red eye, barely sleep maybe hour hour and a half,
- 3:23Speaker 2: go to whatever college game I'm going to. I stay
- 3:26Speaker 2: up right, I don't take a nap, I stay up
- 3:27Speaker 2: all through.
- 3:28Speaker 3: The day Friday.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I go to sleep at like seven thirty eight o'clock
- 3:31Speaker 2: on a Friday night. I get ten sometimes eleven hours
- 3:34Speaker 2: of sleep, wake up feeling like Superman on Saturday.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 3:39Speaker 2: And that's basically what the Rams did. They traveled overnight, like,
- 3:43Speaker 2: got there on Saturday, quick walk through guys at dinner, Bam,
- 3:46Speaker 2: you get to sleep early.
- 3:47Speaker 3: I think some of.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Them, you know, kind of probably woke up in the
- 3:49Speaker 2: middle of the night a little bit, but you're able
- 3:51Speaker 2: to go back, went back to sleep for another few hours,
- 3:54Speaker 2: wake up, and it's like, bang, man, I feel great.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Now let's go play the game. And yeah, go ahead.
- 4:01Speaker 4: I'm with it. Rett, So I do that.
- 4:03Speaker 1: It Tellian going to Jacksonan it's your same as International
- 4:05Speaker 1: but like Friday night high school game, red Eye, get
- 4:09Speaker 1: the Jacksonville kind of hang out throughout the course of
- 4:12Speaker 1: the day, early bedtime, Saturday, go do the game, and
- 4:17Speaker 1: you just kind of do it. I do believe that
- 4:19Speaker 1: the Rams, because they won, they have established a new
- 4:22Speaker 1: blueprint for how teams are doing it, because I think
- 4:24Speaker 1: everyone is still trying to figure out how do you
- 4:26Speaker 1: navigate that? And with so many more international games, that
- 4:30Speaker 1: we're playing, you better have a concrete plan for how
- 4:32Speaker 1: you want to approach those games, because you don't want
- 4:36Speaker 1: to give away games just because you're playing out of the.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Country, no doubt. And they're always on the cutting edge shedding.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Sean McVay does such a great job kind of cultivating
- 4:43Speaker 2: information and understanding what his team really needs.
- 4:46Speaker 3: And I think, you.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Know, you'll see this in the Coordinator of the Week,
- 4:50Speaker 2: but I think we could have picked either coordinator from
- 4:52Speaker 2: the Rams to be the Coordinator of the Week this week.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You know, Micha Laflora with what he did coming up
- 4:57Speaker 2: with that game plan without Pukainakua.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And then you'll see a little bit later.
- 5:02Speaker 2: We'll get to Chris Shula in just a moment, but
- 5:04Speaker 2: let's get back to the Monday Nighters here in just.
- 5:07Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 5:08Speaker 2: And so let's talk about this in the framework of
- 5:10Speaker 2: what we saw first, right, and this was a Bucks
- 5:14Speaker 2: Lions game in Detroit that the Lions came out absolutely
- 5:19Speaker 2: hair on fire in this game.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I mean, you know, Jamiir.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Gibbs is going off with the explosive runs and for
- 5:24Speaker 2: a team that felt like so much of the league
- 5:27Speaker 2: left them for dead after an awful performance in the
- 5:31Speaker 2: season opener against a pretty dang good Green Bay Packers team.
- 5:35Speaker 2: They have done nothing but improve, get back to their
- 5:38Speaker 2: explosive playways on offense, and I'd love to just get
- 5:42Speaker 2: your overall take and then I kind of want to
- 5:44Speaker 2: dig into something that I think is pretty fun from
- 5:45Speaker 2: the scouting community side in this matchup.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Look, Campbell is the real deal when it comes to
- 5:54Speaker 4: mean the coach.
- 5:55Speaker 1: I think the way that he has bounced back from
- 5:57Speaker 1: that awkward introductory pressor to being one of the best
- 6:00Speaker 1: coaches in football. And the thing about it is, I
- 6:03Speaker 1: wish I could say it's to x's and o's is
- 6:06Speaker 1: just I would say the force of nature that he
- 6:09Speaker 1: is when it comes to leadership, this team bounces back
- 6:12Speaker 1: better than anybody perform us.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Man.
- 6:14Speaker 4: They get right back to work.
- 6:15Speaker 1: They know who they are, uh, and they're confident and
- 6:18Speaker 1: that and the thing about them is I'll admit to
- 6:22Speaker 1: dismissed him as a title contender just given the amount
- 6:25Speaker 1: of change that they were experiencing on their staff, but
- 6:28Speaker 1: they're right back to it.
- 6:29Speaker 4: And when they ever get backed into a corner.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Physicality and toughness bully ball comes back to the forefront,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and they're able to impose their will on opponents offensively
- 6:39Speaker 1: and defensively.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I think there's just a there's a there's a toughness
- 6:44Speaker 2: quotient here that's not just like physical physical toughness, which
- 6:49Speaker 2: they certainly have, right. You see it in the trenches,
- 6:52Speaker 2: offensive defensive lines, you see in the linebacker group, really
- 6:55Speaker 2: all over the place Monrose Brown, right, But I think
- 6:58Speaker 2: there's like a mental grit to this team that we
- 7:01Speaker 2: talk about a lot that I think is pretty important
- 7:03Speaker 2: as well. And just kind of wanted to go over
- 7:06Speaker 2: a couple of things on that front, and I'll do
- 7:10Speaker 2: it by kind of just outlining a few things about.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Where the I can pull it up. Stand by here
- 7:17Speaker 3: we go.
- 7:18Speaker 2: So just to get let folks understand, you know, who
- 7:21Speaker 2: they were without on defense, right, So let's talk about that.
- 7:25Speaker 2: First Kirby Joseph terrific safety out Terry and Arnold, first
- 7:30Speaker 2: round corner out DJ Reed, another corner on ir out
- 7:34Speaker 2: Brian branch Nickel, dude one of the best in the league. Suspended. Okay,
- 7:39Speaker 2: So a Meek Robertson who's been a good player for
- 7:41Speaker 2: them since coming over from the Raiders. You know is
- 7:44Speaker 2: is and it is a prominent player for them as well.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Is one you know who I think played pretty dang
- 7:50Speaker 2: good in this game. But can we talk for a
- 7:52Speaker 2: second about D two Saginaw Valley State's finest, Nick Whiteside,
- 8:00Speaker 2: playing in some of his I mean some of his
- 8:02Speaker 2: first extended action in the NFL since coming over following
- 8:05Speaker 2: the twenty three collegiate season, signed as an undrafted free
- 8:09Speaker 2: agent by Washington. This is a guy you know who, look,
- 8:12Speaker 2: if you're looking for tape, if you're looking for you
- 8:15Speaker 2: got to search right from our perspective at this point.
- 8:19Speaker 2: But I think this goes to show you and this
- 8:21Speaker 2: is the guy who did not allow a single catch
- 8:23Speaker 2: in this game if you take the screen pass that
- 8:26Speaker 2: went for a touchdown out which I'm not really going
- 8:27Speaker 2: to put on a corner at this point, but is
- 8:30Speaker 2: a dude that had thirty tackles his final season, a
- 8:33Speaker 2: couple of interceptions twelve career interceptions at Saganaw Valley State
- 8:37Speaker 2: from twenty eighteen to twenty twenty three. Give me a
- 8:42Speaker 2: sense of as a scout buck, how you go about
- 8:46Speaker 2: and cultivate evaluations on players at the D two level
- 8:53Speaker 2: knowing that there's so much less available to you in
- 8:56Speaker 2: terms of information. Obviously you're gonna be able to find
- 8:58Speaker 2: the tape, but you got to go to the schools.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I imagine if there's guys that you're identifying, how would
- 9:04Speaker 2: a team go about finding a player like Nick Whiteside
- 9:06Speaker 2: and understanding whether he could play for him?
- 9:08Speaker 1: You know, the main thing is when you're doing the
- 9:11Speaker 1: preliminary stuff and you have to list, his name will
- 9:13Speaker 1: pop up. It's really important that you go into the
- 9:15Speaker 1: school and get your eyeballs on him so you can
- 9:17Speaker 1: see a file. Does he match up I'm looking at
- 9:20Speaker 1: a six foot two hundred pounds defensive back.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Well, that's certainly we have you an opportunity to play.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Then is watching him play on tape he's playing to
- 9:28Speaker 1: does he dominate? Does it stand out on tape that
- 9:31Speaker 1: he's a dominant player at the double? Then a lot
- 9:34Speaker 1: of it from that point is projecting how is he
- 9:38Speaker 1: going to compete against the big boys, all Star games,
- 9:42Speaker 1: those things when he comes to camp.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Does he look like he's out of place or does he?
- 9:47Speaker 4: Is he a guy that kind of.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Steps up and rises to the challenge that he's facing
- 9:51Speaker 1: when it comes to new levels of competition. All those
- 9:54Speaker 1: things there, But I believe, like the believe so much
- 9:58Speaker 1: of it is the personality. Does he have to write
- 10:01Speaker 1: stuff on the inside and we can talk about it.
- 10:04Speaker 4: In those things, and he has to be able to
- 10:05Speaker 4: give you the right answers.
- 10:06Speaker 1: But then when you see him compete, man, does he
- 10:08Speaker 1: compete and play like his hair as you were alluding to.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, like, I'm just kind of going back because, look,
- 10:15Speaker 2: I'll be honest with you, I knew absolutely nothing about
- 10:18Speaker 2: this cat, right, I mean, and how could you at
- 10:23Speaker 2: this point? I mean, he was a Great Lakes Intercollegiate
- 10:26Speaker 2: Athletic Conference defensive Back.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Of the Year.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Okay, he played in the UFL with the Saint Louis BattleHawks.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I don't remember him at all on the All Star
- 10:39Speaker 2: Game circuit. I could be wrong. It's hard now since
- 10:42Speaker 2: he since he is, you know, a guy who obviously
- 10:46Speaker 2: showed up.
- 10:46Speaker 3: In a big way.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Anytime you google his name, you're just getting flooded with
- 10:49Speaker 2: articles from like the last month or two. He was
- 10:52Speaker 2: a really good player in the preseason for the Lions,
- 10:54Speaker 2: so they've obviously trusted him. I'm just trying to see
- 10:58Speaker 2: if there's like anything out there I could couldn't see it.
- 11:01Speaker 2: So look, I think again, I love these stories, right.
- 11:06Speaker 2: We love to see guys who you know, are outside
- 11:10Speaker 2: of the construct of like major college football and draft
- 11:13Speaker 2: analysis to like have an opportunity to show up in
- 11:16Speaker 2: a big way.
- 11:16Speaker 3: So I think that's really cool.
- 11:18Speaker 2: And credit to him right for sticking with it, you know,
- 11:21Speaker 2: going through the NFL, the UFL, back to the NFL.
- 11:24Speaker 3: And now into a prime role.
- 11:26Speaker 2: He was excellent last night for the Detroit Lions against
- 11:29Speaker 2: the team and on the Bucks that have been pretty
- 11:31Speaker 2: dang good on offense, so that big part of that
- 11:34Speaker 2: Lions win. Let's move to the second game of the night,
- 11:37Speaker 2: which was the Texans and the Seahawks, and I mean
- 11:41Speaker 2: we've changed coordinators now for Houston.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I know they've had injuries.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I know they're still kind of working through the offensive
- 11:51Speaker 2: line and trying to build that thing back up.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Just not working on a consistent basis.
- 11:56Speaker 2: And look, Joe Mixon, I think being out is a
- 11:58Speaker 2: bigger deal than most people and talking about at this
- 12:00Speaker 2: point because the run game was huge for them last
- 12:02Speaker 2: year and kind of booed them when the past game
- 12:05Speaker 2: was not quite there.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Let's start there with what you've.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Seen on that front for an extremely talented quarterback and c. J.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Stroud on this offense just being unable to kind of
- 12:16Speaker 2: find a groove.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the weirdest thing, man, A team that is
- 12:20Speaker 1: so good, particularly on defense, a team that should be
- 12:23Speaker 1: in the conversation as a high end playoff contender, just struggling,
- 12:27Speaker 1: just struggling putting up points. They don't look like a
- 12:30Speaker 1: team with the talent that they have on the rosters
- 12:32Speaker 1: should look. And we can talk about the offensive line
- 12:35Speaker 1: and that stuff, but it just doesn't look like they
- 12:38Speaker 1: are maximizing the talent that they have available, from quarterback
- 12:41Speaker 1: to the running game to the playmakers on the outside.
- 12:45Speaker 4: The scheme just isn't matching the skill of the players.
- 12:48Speaker 1: And you're right, it's the second coordinator that we are
- 12:51Speaker 1: and I understand that it takes a while for sometimes
- 12:54Speaker 1: it to click, but that was a game last night
- 12:57Speaker 1: that they should the way the defense played should have
- 13:00Speaker 1: been instrument enough for them to win, and not getting
- 13:03Speaker 1: enough from their offense, and so they're giving away games
- 13:05Speaker 1: and they're gonna look up and you're gonna be too
- 13:07Speaker 1: far behind the eight ball to be able to get
- 13:09Speaker 1: back into the conversation. As a playoff team.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and to think about this that the Seahawks turned
- 13:14Speaker 2: the ball over five times in this game.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Crazy. I mean, the.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Odds, the odds of losing that kind of game, just
- 13:23Speaker 1: the odds of losing.
- 13:24Speaker 2: It's like ninety nine percent. You turn them all over
- 13:26Speaker 2: five times, you're gonna lose. You just can't do it now,
- 13:30Speaker 2: I mean, truly, it was four times. Okay, there was
- 13:33Speaker 2: an incredibly odd and unique play that I want to
- 13:37Speaker 2: run through because it's one of the longest descriptions of
- 13:39Speaker 2: a play I've ever seen on the NFL's Stats and
- 13:41Speaker 2: Information website. So I'm going to read this to you
- 13:44Speaker 2: if you remember it from the second quarter. It was
- 13:46Speaker 2: a play that looked like a safety ended up being
- 13:48Speaker 2: a touchback. So here's how it sounded.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Right.
- 13:50Speaker 2: It was the second and ten from the Houston twenty
- 13:53Speaker 2: four right, So from the minus twenty four Houston with
- 13:56Speaker 2: the football second quarter, about ten minutes and thirty seconds
- 13:59Speaker 2: to go in the second quarter, C J. Stroud sacked
- 14:03Speaker 2: back at the twelve yard line, loss of twelve by
- 14:05Speaker 2: Ernest Jones. Ernest Jones forces a fumble, It's touched at
- 14:08Speaker 2: the Houston five yard line and recovered by Houston's Braxton
- 14:13Speaker 2: Burrios eight yards deep in the end zone. Burrios then
- 14:16Speaker 2: touched down in the end zone. Safety Ernest Jones is
- 14:20Speaker 2: the one who then ends up touching him gets credit
- 14:22Speaker 2: for the safety. There's a penalty on Xavier Hutchinson for
- 14:26Speaker 2: a legal shift. All right, that's declined, right, who cares?
- 14:28Speaker 2: Replay official comes in, They review the loose ball recovery,
- 14:32Speaker 2: ruling play was reversed. Stroud is then this is how
- 14:35Speaker 2: it should read. Stroud sacked at the Houston twelve by
- 14:37Speaker 2: Ernest Jones. Forced fumble by Ernest Jones recovered by Seattle's
- 14:41Speaker 2: Drake Thomas at the Houston five. So they said that
- 14:44Speaker 2: Seattle actually gained possession of the football at the Houston five.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Drake Thomas then returns that fumble four yards to the
- 14:54Speaker 2: Houston one. What he marks. Then the Houston running back
- 14:58Speaker 2: forces the fumble. It's touched one yard deep into the
- 15:01Speaker 2: end zone, recovered then by Braxton Burios of the Texans
- 15:05Speaker 2: at the Houston. Well, let's call it eight yards deep
- 15:07Speaker 2: in the end zone. He's then down for a touchback
- 15:11Speaker 2: instead of a fumble recovery. We then enforced the penalty
- 15:14Speaker 2: illegal shift five yards at the Houston twenty four. All
- 15:16Speaker 2: that to say, no play.
- 15:21Speaker 4: So much, so much.
- 15:24Speaker 5: A second and fifteen from the Houston nineteen after the penalty,
- 15:29Speaker 5: Stroud quick throw Nico Collins gain of three, and it's like,
- 15:33Speaker 5: what in the world just happened. That kind of explains
- 15:35Speaker 5: the day, the night, and maybe the year for the
- 15:38Speaker 5: Houston Texans.
- 15:38Speaker 4: You know, look, you just.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Talk about anything and everything that can go awry that's
- 15:44Speaker 1: going to wrap for this team, and it's really unfortunate
- 15:47Speaker 1: that they haven't been able to kind of right the ship.
- 15:49Speaker 1: But here's where I take solace in the Texas and
- 15:53Speaker 1: why they always can climb back into it. You can
- 15:55Speaker 1: made the case of the best defensive is the way
- 15:58Speaker 1: that we play what they're able to do in those things,
- 16:01Speaker 1: and that defense can keep them in games and makes
- 16:03Speaker 1: them a tough out against any opponent. I promise you
- 16:06Speaker 1: they don't even have to become an elite offense. If
- 16:09Speaker 1: they can just have a competent offense.
- 16:12Speaker 4: They have a chance of being able to do it.
- 16:13Speaker 1: And so you hope they find this stride down the
- 16:16Speaker 1: stretch and they're able to kind of make amends for
- 16:19Speaker 1: some of the games that they've kind of stumbled and
- 16:20Speaker 1: following this early in the year.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think I'd say the same thing on
- 16:26Speaker 2: that front. Okay, So with that we have covered the
- 16:30Speaker 2: two Monday night games, Let's get to our rookie draft.
- 16:35Speaker 3: And I think, you know.
- 16:37Speaker 2: DJ did say that there was a pipe issue in
- 16:40Speaker 2: his house.
- 16:41Speaker 3: I think he may just.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Be, you know what, waving the white flag with this
- 16:45Speaker 2: thing in the rookie draft.
- 16:47Speaker 3: I think that's probably what we're talking about here.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I mean, his running back scored point five points in
- 16:54Speaker 2: this in this week, Trey Bon Henderson. He was going
- 16:57Speaker 2: for the going for the gusto, trying to hope or
- 17:00Speaker 2: breakout day from Trey com Uh. He had Matthew Golden
- 17:04Speaker 2: as his receiver. He got seven points. Tyler Warren, I
- 17:07Speaker 2: think he took with the first pick, if I'm not mistaken,
- 17:10Speaker 2: trying to steal him from me, you know, hitting in
- 17:13Speaker 2: second place points in the tight end. So I think
- 17:15Speaker 2: this might be the first week that that Warren did
- 17:18Speaker 2: not win the rookie tight end battle. You had Harold
- 17:22Speaker 2: Fannin got you third place. DJ talked me into Arondez
- 17:27Speaker 2: Gadsden Junior. He had a monster game. Monster Game, a
- 17:32Speaker 2: Monster game. I'm looking at the numbers lacross. I'm like,
- 17:37Speaker 2: you've got to be kidding me.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Ronde Gasson is playing like his dad, Like he's
- 17:42Speaker 1: just going coming on the perimeter.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Unbelievable.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and look, you you got a big time payoff
- 17:48Speaker 2: for sticking, sticking with your your loyalty here and going
- 17:51Speaker 2: with Travis Hunter's first career tuddy right, first career one
- 17:56Speaker 2: hundred yard game.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you know where Ritt, you know what
- 17:58Speaker 1: that was. That was a a anty C football play.
- 18:01Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. The game is a right
- 18:03Speaker 1: But in the fourth quarter, three minutes left, we're celebrating
- 18:06Speaker 1: all touchdowns at all big plays.
- 18:07Speaker 4: And so if he gets if he gets eighty.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Of those yards three minutes of the game, no one
- 18:13Speaker 1: cares because all we must care about outcomes, not processes.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's been really fun to watch, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 2: some of these guys. And I think, you know, for Hunter,
- 18:26Speaker 2: I did think we saw some more of the things
- 18:28Speaker 2: that you know, a little bit more of that downfield
- 18:31Speaker 2: targeting that you know we saw from him when he
- 18:33Speaker 2: was playing receiver at Colado. Maybe we'll see a little
- 18:35Speaker 2: bit more of that moving forward, but it was at
- 18:37Speaker 2: least fun for Jaguars fans to get a glimpse right
- 18:40Speaker 2: of what that was.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Here's what's going to happen because the Jaguars have a
- 18:44Speaker 1: drops problem and the only person who is catching the
- 18:47Speaker 1: ball consistently is Travis Hunter. I will imagine after they
- 18:51Speaker 1: do a little self reflection and evaluation, Travis Hunter will
- 18:56Speaker 1: be the number one receiver for the Jaguars going down
- 18:58Speaker 1: the stretch. I think you'll see more walls hit his way.
- 19:01Speaker 1: You see him at all a wide receiver. He lays
- 19:05Speaker 1: some dB, but I think you go see an all
- 19:07Speaker 1: out effort to that. This guy gets tamplus targets a
- 19:11Speaker 1: game and gets enough touches to have an impact.
- 19:12Speaker 3: On the game, no question.
- 19:15Speaker 2: So clearly, Travis Hunter winning the wide receiver sweepstakes got
- 19:18Speaker 2: you three points. You got a point from Ashton Genty
- 19:22Speaker 2: as well, even though he only accumulated four point four points.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I guess tells you how bad the rookie running back
- 19:26Speaker 2: room was this week. I ended up getting the win
- 19:29Speaker 2: in the running back room with Cam Scataboo's eighteen point
- 19:32Speaker 2: four points with Theronde Gadsden, and then I came in
- 19:35Speaker 2: third in the wide receiver, so didn't get a point there,
- 19:37Speaker 2: So I win the week six points. Bucky comes in
- 19:39Speaker 2: second with four, brings our totals to Bucky at twenty three,
- 19:44Speaker 2: DJ at twenty eight, which is why he's I think
- 19:47Speaker 2: quitting on the rookie draft and perhaps this podcast as
- 19:50Speaker 2: a whole, we don't know. And then here I sit
- 19:52Speaker 2: at thirty three, now five points out in So with.
- 19:56Speaker 1: That, because you talked about people stealing the Rams process
- 20:02Speaker 1: after having so much success in London, I get to
- 20:05Speaker 1: feel like, Ritt, what are you doing?
- 20:07Speaker 4: How much do you spending on this staying drafting? Like
- 20:09Speaker 4: how much time?
- 20:10Speaker 2: Maybe maybe more than I should should.
- 20:14Speaker 4: You're deeply invested.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Look, you're using all of the PFF stats and all
- 20:19Speaker 1: these things.
- 20:20Speaker 4: And all of the tools available on their website.
- 20:24Speaker 1: You just kind of strike me as how you do anything,
- 20:27Speaker 1: that's how you do everything, And so I feel like
- 20:29Speaker 1: you're all in on trying to make sure that you're
- 20:31Speaker 1: dominating this thing, and maybe just maybe the Brooks, the
- 20:35Speaker 1: Brooks team needs to spend a little more time.
- 20:37Speaker 4: In the preparation phase when it comes to it, because.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You are definitely all the way in on the rookie draft.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yeah, look, you know, I was with a with a
- 20:45Speaker 2: team a couple of weeks ago in my college work.
- 20:48Speaker 3: That said, oh, look, the quarterbacks play is slipped a
- 20:50Speaker 3: little bit.
- 20:50Speaker 2: And it's you know what it is, it's time to
- 20:53Speaker 2: refocus on the process of preparation, and that's what we
- 20:56Speaker 2: need to kind of write the ship here a little bit.
- 20:58Speaker 2: He comes out in the next game and go twenty
- 21:00Speaker 2: seven to thirty three for a touchdown, and you know,
- 21:02Speaker 2: I think that's that's maybe a lesson for you. You know,
- 21:05Speaker 2: it's just like back to refocus on the press.
- 21:10Speaker 1: You know, we can get back, we can get back
- 21:11Speaker 1: to making sure that preparation is everything. Yeah, failing to
- 21:15Speaker 1: prepare is preparing to fill all of those old adages
- 21:18Speaker 1: that we've heard coming up in a long way.
- 21:21Speaker 3: There you go.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Okay, let me let me outline the bye weeks here,
- 21:24Speaker 2: because we do have a few. So you're gonna have
- 21:27Speaker 2: to be without Travis Hunter, no Jags, no Ash and genty,
- 21:30Speaker 2: with the vague with the Raiders on buy. I'm not
- 21:33Speaker 2: sure we have anybody there at Arizona, Detroit, nothing really
- 21:37Speaker 2: with Seattle, nothing really with the Rams. So I think
- 21:42Speaker 2: it's really just Jacksonville and Vegas, and I believe Bucky
- 21:48Speaker 2: that you sir, let me be sure have the first pick.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Yes, you do. It's gonna go Bucky, It'll go me.
- 21:55Speaker 4: DJ.
- 21:55Speaker 2: You'll get back to back so with picks three and four. Uh,
- 21:58Speaker 2: and then we will go from there. And Avin is
- 22:01Speaker 2: going to be typing DJ's picks in the chat, so
- 22:04Speaker 2: I'll announce those once we get him. But Bucky, you
- 22:07Speaker 2: are up first with the first overall pick in this
- 22:09Speaker 2: week's rookie draft.
- 22:10Speaker 4: What do you got?
- 22:11Speaker 1: Well, look, it's easy, man, because I'm gonna do what
- 22:13Speaker 1: what DJ did last week. I'm gonna take Tyler Warren
- 22:15Speaker 1: because I feel so strong about him. I'm not I'm
- 22:18Speaker 1: not going to give you a break and be like, oh,
- 22:20Speaker 1: run the gas and he's gonna go that way.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Nope, I'm just gonna hold him. I'm a handcuff him.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Tyler Warren.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Uh, maybe the top playmaker for maybe the team in
- 22:31Speaker 1: the league.
- 22:31Speaker 2: And okay, okay, oh maybe maybe I think that's a
- 22:36Speaker 2: that's a fair assessment at this point. Okay, I think, uh,
- 22:40Speaker 2: you know, just looking at and where we're at in
- 22:42Speaker 2: the running back group, you know, I think there's a
- 22:45Speaker 2: strong case to be made for quin John Judkins. You
- 22:48Speaker 2: know he's on the road this week going up against
- 22:50Speaker 2: New England, and then you've got Cam Skataboo going on
- 22:53Speaker 2: the road against the Eagle. So two tough defenses for
- 22:56Speaker 2: a couple of rookie running backs. Man, that's gonna be
- 23:01Speaker 2: a hard one for me. Giants and Eagles, Browns and Patriots,
- 23:08Speaker 2: Battle of Ohio State rookie running backs. Actually in that matchup,
- 23:11Speaker 2: he Trevon Henderson, who has not done a whole lot.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I think at this point I'm going to move off
- 23:17Speaker 2: camp Scataboo. I can't imagine the Eagles You're going to
- 23:19Speaker 2: let that du bang his head on this on the
- 23:21Speaker 2: goalpost another three times like he did two weeks ago.
- 23:24Speaker 2: I just can't imagine that that's going to happen. So
- 23:26Speaker 2: give me quinch On Judkins for the Cleveland Browns to
- 23:31Speaker 2: be my number two pick, which means DJ is up
- 23:34Speaker 2: with back to back picks. All right, he's going to buka. Okay,
- 23:38Speaker 2: So taking a rookie receiver off the board and then
- 23:41Speaker 2: scatting pretty good choices, pretty good choices.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, scatterbo huh yeah, why would you do that?
- 23:49Speaker 4: Gavin?
- 23:50Speaker 2: Yeah, So that's going to come back to me now,
- 23:54Speaker 2: and that means I got to.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Get my receiver.
- 23:59Speaker 4: All right.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Let's see, am I gonna go back to.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Am?
- 24:03Speaker 2: I gonna go back to Temac tenor Er McMillan was
- 24:07Speaker 2: not great this last week for the Panthers, and Bryce
- 24:11Speaker 2: Young is probably out this week with the high ankle spring.
- 24:15Speaker 3: So that's that's a tough one.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Uh.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Here, let's see if there's somebody else that is piquing
- 24:24Speaker 3: my interest here. I think.
- 24:35Speaker 2: I think I'm gonna have to go back to the
- 24:36Speaker 2: well with with Uh. I think I'm gonna have to
- 24:40Speaker 2: go back to the well with Ronde Gadston uh and
- 24:43Speaker 2: just get the get the best next best option here
- 24:46Speaker 2: and get him off the board.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Uh.
- 24:48Speaker 2: So I will take Gadston with this pick, which will
- 24:51Speaker 2: bring you back up Bucky Abuca, Judkins, Scataboo Gadsden off
- 24:58Speaker 2: the board. You, sir, need a running back in a
- 25:00Speaker 2: wide receiver. You get back to back, oh, back to
- 25:04Speaker 2: back picks. That's interesting, all right, So let's go. Even
- 25:07Speaker 2: though you're down, you're down on T Mac. I feel
- 25:09Speaker 2: like T Mac is gonna be okay. So I'm gonna
- 25:11Speaker 2: go with tedor ROAMG. Miller and I'm gonna.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Make sure that I say his entire name because his
- 25:15Speaker 1: mom cornered me in an elevator and not Oh gosh,
- 25:18Speaker 1: it's not happy with me.
- 25:21Speaker 4: Yeah, so I gotta make sure I give his name. Now.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Now running back is a little tricky because no Ashton
- 25:30Speaker 1: t Yeah, r J. Harvey is barely getting run not
- 25:36Speaker 1: really making an impact. My guy Henderson with New England
- 25:41Speaker 1: is not really being what we thought he would be.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Two carries five yards is not good enough. Maybe we
- 25:47Speaker 4: just go with R J. Harvey because the Broncos and
- 25:50Speaker 4: I don't know, I'm kind of so we have to
- 25:52Speaker 4: go just hoping do it. He didn't.
- 25:54Speaker 1: He gave me nothing four carries your yards last week,
- 25:57Speaker 1: so I'm just gonna have to.
- 25:58Speaker 3: I mean, Bill crossky Merritt would have been another one,
- 26:00Speaker 3: but yeah, let's.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Let's do Mark because he had thirteen New York.
- 26:04Speaker 2: We go Bill Crosskey Merritt his BUCkies pick at the
- 26:08Speaker 2: running back spot. So that gives you Bill krossky Merritt.
- 26:11Speaker 2: That gives you Tyler Warren and Teteroa McMillan.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Not a great lineup, but we'll see maybe it's maybe
- 26:16Speaker 1: it's great, and wat.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Great I'm going to finish this one out by going
- 26:20Speaker 2: choosing my receiver as Tz Johnson, knowing that Mike Evans
- 26:25Speaker 2: is probably done for most of the rest of the
- 26:27Speaker 2: regular season broken clavicle at Buka is still a little
- 26:30Speaker 2: bit hampered with the hamstring. Chris Godwin has been out.
- 26:34Speaker 2: T has caught a nice screen pass for a touchdown
- 26:36Speaker 2: in this game, So give me Tes Johnson. And then
- 26:39Speaker 2: Gavin says, DJ's going to go with Harold Fannin to
- 26:42Speaker 2: close out the tight end spot for DJ, which means
- 26:45Speaker 2: he will have ed Buca, Scataboo and Fannin, so we
- 26:49Speaker 2: might have.
- 26:50Speaker 6: A battle of Bucks wide receivers rookie wide receivers here watch, Okay,
- 26:55Speaker 6: So that's our rookie draft right there, and when we back,
- 27:00Speaker 6: we'll have our coordinator of the week. All right, time
- 27:06Speaker 6: for Hot or Not brought to you by with Sabi
- 27:08Speaker 6: Hot Cloud Storageret Lewis Bucky Brooks back with.
- 27:10Speaker 2: You talking coordinator of the week. And as I mentioned before,
- 27:14Speaker 2: felt like we could have chosen either of the Rams coordinators.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Offensive coordinator Michael Floor engineering and offensive game plan obviously
- 27:22Speaker 2: called by Sean McVay. But five touchdowns from Matthew Stafford
- 27:26Speaker 2: without the league's do everything leading reception receiving yards, a
- 27:32Speaker 2: guy in Puka to Kua out with the ankle, so
- 27:35Speaker 2: Puka Takua down. They get first career touchdowns from a
- 27:38Speaker 2: Canada Mumfield and also from Terrence Ferguson, just continuing to
- 27:42Speaker 2: find ways to attack Jacksonville Jaguars defense and do so
- 27:47Speaker 2: without really their best player on offense outside of Stafford,
- 27:50Speaker 2: which was I thought pretty cool. But we are going
- 27:51Speaker 2: to give the nod for defensive coordinator for coordinator of
- 27:54Speaker 2: the Week to the Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula, who
- 27:58Speaker 2: has had that outfit absolutely hum in the last couple
- 28:00Speaker 2: of weeks and wins over Baltimore and Jacksonville before we
- 28:03Speaker 2: get into those two games, and really this last game
- 28:06Speaker 2: in the win over the Jags. A quick background on
- 28:09Speaker 2: Chris Shula. Obviously you know the name, right, grandson of
- 28:13Speaker 2: the late great Don Shula.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Chris's dad, Dave Shula, also.
- 28:17Speaker 2: A head coach in the league for Cincinnati, coached with
- 28:20Speaker 2: his dad Don there in Miami, and I believe this
- 28:23Speaker 2: to be true, the only third generation coach to coach
- 28:29Speaker 2: in a Super Bowl. So obviously Don, Dave and Chris
- 28:35Speaker 2: All coaching in a Super Bowl, And I mean, that's.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Football royalty right there with your last name.
- 28:43Speaker 2: But I think Chris has done a phenomenal job, Bucky,
- 28:46Speaker 2: establishing who he is right as a coach, building his
- 28:50Speaker 2: own identity, and he's done that now as the Rams
- 28:53Speaker 2: defensive coordinator, getting promoted into that role in twenty twenty
- 28:57Speaker 2: four when where he Morris left. He'd been with the
- 28:59Speaker 2: Rams twenty seventeen as an assistant linebackers coach outside linebackers coach.
- 29:05Speaker 2: He and Sean McVay, of course, were college teammates, roommates
- 29:08Speaker 2: at Miami of Ohio. Look, it had been with the
- 29:13Speaker 2: then San Diego Chargers before joining Sean McVay with the
- 29:16Speaker 2: Rams was also the defensive coordinator at John Carroll University.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Obviously everyone knows that name in terms of hotbed for
- 29:23Speaker 2: coaches in twenty fourteen. And then, I mean, this is
- 29:27Speaker 2: probably the reason for his success, Bucky, if we really
- 29:30Speaker 2: think about it. But was a defensive grad assistant at
- 29:34Speaker 2: Indiana University eleven twenty thirty. All right, I mean like
- 29:39Speaker 2: that's probably where it all started, that's right, is new.
- 29:44Speaker 4: The new cradle of coaches, That's right? Not Miamiyo, not
- 29:47Speaker 4: mimi Yo, Indiana.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Not John Carroll.
- 29:51Speaker 4: That's right, John Carroll, not all those things.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I will say this, having watched the defense play at
- 29:56Speaker 1: unbelievable level, a few different things that you tacked with
- 30:00Speaker 1: doing a few of the defensive coordinated for the Rams
- 30:02Speaker 1: is making do with a bunch of young players that
- 30:05Speaker 1: may not all be first round talent, but putting together,
- 30:08Speaker 1: putting them on the field and find.
- 30:09Speaker 4: A way to have a great defense.
- 30:10Speaker 1: When you look at the Rams and to see it
- 30:13Speaker 1: up close and personal, man, they are hard playing bunch.
- 30:16Speaker 4: They have an edge to them that they play with.
- 30:18Speaker 1: They get after it and from a schinmatic standpoint, man,
- 30:22Speaker 1: they give you a lot of volume that you have
- 30:24Speaker 1: to do it. So for Shula to be able to
- 30:27Speaker 1: do all the different things that they do, you got
- 30:29Speaker 1: to be a great teacher in terms of getting everyone
- 30:32Speaker 1: on the same page with the scheme, and then you
- 30:34Speaker 1: have to be a master player developer. They have so
- 30:37Speaker 1: many young players contributing right away. I know they believe
- 30:42Speaker 1: in their model and the kind of character guys that
- 30:45Speaker 1: they bring in in terms of like their football character.
- 30:47Speaker 1: But it's a lot to be the puppeteer to kind
- 30:51Speaker 1: of get everyone playing at the right level.
- 30:53Speaker 4: So give him a lot of credit.
- 30:54Speaker 1: It was a very impressive performance, but it's one of
- 30:57Speaker 1: many impressive performances that we see from the Rams defense.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Look, and I think we all talk about the talent
- 31:03Speaker 2: that they've you know, developed upfront, right, drafted and developed, right,
- 31:07Speaker 2: you know, from Kobe Turner to Byron Young and then
- 31:09Speaker 2: of course you know the tag team picks a year
- 31:11Speaker 2: ago at Jared Versu and Braden Fisk. But I think
- 31:14Speaker 2: you know, when you they've found ways to identify players
- 31:17Speaker 2: that they can win with at the second level, right,
- 31:20Speaker 2: Guys like Nate Lammon, who's just been you know, the
- 31:23Speaker 2: unrestriction free agent. It comes over from the Falcon's Omar
- 31:25Speaker 2: Spates undrafted free agent. Right, These were you know, for
- 31:28Speaker 2: all intents and purposes, you know, compared to others that
- 31:31Speaker 2: are starting in the league, like scrap heat, guys that
- 31:34Speaker 2: they have brought in, identified a talent and a skill
- 31:39Speaker 2: set and then developed and put them in positions to
- 31:42Speaker 2: accentuate those skill sets make plays for them. I mean,
- 31:44Speaker 2: Laman's making like ten tackles a game right now. He's
- 31:47Speaker 2: going to be way up there at the end in
- 31:48Speaker 2: terms of tackle leaders. And then you know, again beyond
- 31:54Speaker 2: the day one day two draft picks in the secondary. Yeah,
- 31:58Speaker 2: Cam Kitchens with a third round pick, but Sam Curle
- 32:00Speaker 2: comes over from Washington, Kobe Durant, fourth round pick, Quentin Lake,
- 32:03Speaker 2: sixth round pick, Darius Williams, you know, you knew from
- 32:07Speaker 2: you know, kind of left the Rams, went to the Jacks,
- 32:09Speaker 2: back to the Rams here. I mean, like they that
- 32:12Speaker 2: to me is some of the more impressive stuff that
- 32:14Speaker 2: they've done is from an evaluation standpoint, finding guys you
- 32:19Speaker 2: know that in some of those like lower lower rounds
- 32:22Speaker 2: of the draft or in free agency that have been overlooked,
- 32:25Speaker 2: and then figuring out how.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Best use them, right, you know, like that's that to
- 32:28Speaker 3: me has been really impressive.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just telling you that the whole, as they
- 32:35Speaker 1: would call it in the building, their own ecosystem, the
- 32:37Speaker 1: way they get down there, they just they don't make excuses.
- 32:42Speaker 1: They look, they play with who shows up, They find
- 32:44Speaker 1: a way to get it done, and the standard remains high. Obviously,
- 32:48Speaker 1: I want to give a lot of credit to Sean McVay,
- 32:50Speaker 1: but I have to give credit to the coordinators and
- 32:51Speaker 1: the position coaches on the respective size of the ball
- 32:54Speaker 1: because they understand what the challenge is to get young
