- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, the 21st of
- 0:15September. So good that you can invite me
- 0:19into your day so that you and I can continue on this incredible
- 0:23adventure of hearing about the birth of our church in the
- 0:26world, empowered by Jesus and his spirit in the book of Acts.
- 0:31And today we reached chapter 5, which starts off with that very
- 0:35scary encounter of Anna, Nice and Saphira, that couple who
- 0:41died because they withheld money from the church.
- 0:44This is just one of those fascinating stories.
- 0:48It is unique in all of the book of Acts, in fact, in all of the
- 0:51New Testament that we see this sort of thing go down.
- 0:54And there are a number of people with a number of opinions on
- 0:57this, but there probably a couple of things that are worth
- 1:00noting. Firstly, that the Holy Spirit is
- 1:03not just some timid little toy that makes people brave enough
- 1:07to say some words, but the Holy Spirit is indeed the living,
- 1:12breathing presence of the Almighty God of the universe,
- 1:16who is just and powerful. And this is evidence of that.
- 1:20It's also to say that money, or the love of money is a tricky
- 1:24thing. And in fact all of the gospel
- 1:26authors speak really quite angrily and violently against
- 1:30that love of money and putting money above other things.
- 1:33And this is another example of that theme, really just wanting
- 1:37to point out that the way of the world chasing money is not where
- 1:41we should be at, but promoting God's Kingdom.
- 1:45And another fascinating interpretation is it's not just
- 1:48the man who is punished, but there is equal waiting in the
- 1:51story given to both Anna Nice and Saphira.
- 1:54This is the first time that men and women are both held equally
- 1:59accountable for the work of their faith in their community.
- 2:03This is very new for the Jews in that space where women were
- 2:07often subservient to men and their decisions.
- 2:09So here this is the church saying that there is equal
- 2:13footing for men and women in this work.
- 2:16Isn't that cool? In the midst of the awfulness of
- 2:19the story? So anyway, I've said enough.
- 2:22Let's actually read the chapter and hear these words as written
- 2:26in Acts chapter 5. But there was a certain man
- 2:40named Annanis, who, with his wife Saphira, sold some
- 2:44property. He brought part of the money to
- 2:47the apostles, claiming it was the full amount with his wife's
- 2:50consent. He kept the rest.
- 2:53Then Peter said. Anna Nice, Why have you let
- 2:57Satan fill your heart? You have lied to the Holy
- 3:00Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.
- 3:04The property was yours to sell or not sell as you wished.
- 3:07And after selling it, the money was yours to give away.
- 3:11How could you do a thing like this?
- 3:13You weren't lying to us, but to God.
- 3:17As soon as Anna Nice heard these words, he fell to the floor and
- 3:21died. Everyone heard about it was
- 3:24terrified. Then some young men got up,
- 3:27wrapped him in a sheet and took him out and buried him.
- 3:31About 3 hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had
- 3:34happened. Peter asked her, was this the
- 3:37price you and your husband received for your land?
- 3:40Yes, she replied. That was the price.
- 3:44And Peter said, how could the two of you even think of
- 3:48conspiring to test the spirit of the Lord like this?
- 3:51The young men who buried your husband are just outside the
- 3:54door, and they will carry you out too.
- 3:58Instantly she fell to the floor and died.
- 4:01When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they
- 4:04carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
- 4:08Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who
- 4:12heard what had happened. The apostles were performing
- 4:16many miraculous signs and wonders among the people, and
- 4:20all the believers were meeting regularly at the temple in the
- 4:23area known as Solomon's Colonnade.
- 4:26But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people
- 4:29had high regard for them. Yet more and more people
- 4:33believed and were brought to the Lord.
- 4:35Crowds of both men and women as a result of the apostles work.
- 4:40Sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and
- 4:44mats, so that Peter's shadow might fall across some of them.
- 4:47As he went by, crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem,
- 4:52bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and
- 4:56they were all healed. The high priest and his
- 5:00officials, who were sadjusses, were filled with jealousy.
- 5:04They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.
- 5:07But an Angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the
- 5:11jail, and brought them out. Then he told them, go to the
- 5:15temple and give the people this message of life.
- 5:20So at Daybreak the apostles entered the temple as they were
- 5:23told and immediately began teaching.
- 5:27When the high priest and his officials arrived, they convened
- 5:30the high council, the full assembly of the elders of
- 5:34Israel. Then they sent to the apostles
- 5:37to be brought from the jail for trial.
- 5:41But when the temple guards went to the jail, the men were gone.
- 5:45So they returned to the council and reported the jail was
- 5:49securely locked with the guard standing outside.
- 5:52But when we opened the gates, no one was there.
- 5:55When the captain of the temple guard and the leading priests
- 5:58heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all
- 6:02end. Then someone arrived with
- 6:05startling news. The men you put in jail are
- 6:08standing in the temple teaching the people.
- 6:12The captain went with his temple guards and arrested the
- 6:14apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people
- 6:18would stone them. Then they brought the apostles
- 6:21before the High Council, where the high priest confronted them.
- 6:25We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man's
- 6:30name, he said instead. You have filled all Jerusalem
- 6:35with your teaching about him, and you want to make us
- 6:39responsible for his death. But Peter and the apostles
- 6:44replied, we must obey God rather than any human authority.
- 6:50The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you
- 6:54killed him by hanging him on a cross.
- 6:56Then God put him in the place of honor at his right hand as
- 7:00Prince and savior. He did this so the people of
- 7:05Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven.
- 7:09We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy
- 7:12Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.
- 7:16When they heard this, the High Council was furious and decided
- 7:21to kill them. But one member, a Pharisee named
- 7:24Gemalial, who is an expert in religious law and respected by
- 7:29all the people, stood up and ordered that the men be sent
- 7:33outside the council chamber for a while.
- 7:36Then he said to his colleagues, men of Israel, take care what
- 7:41you are planning to do with these men.
- 7:44Some time ago there was that fellow Theodos who pretended to
- 7:48be someone great. About 400 others joined him, but
- 7:53he was killed, and all his followers went their various
- 7:57ways. The whole movement came to
- 7:59nothing after him. At the time of the census, there
- 8:04was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him, but
- 8:09he was killed too, and all his followers were scattered.
- 8:12So my advice is, leave these men alone.
- 8:16Let them go. If they're planning and doing
- 8:20these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown.
- 8:24But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them.
- 8:29You may even find yourselves fighting against God.
- 8:35The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and
- 8:39had them flogged. Then they ordered them never
- 8:42again to speak in the name of Jesus and let them go.
- 8:46The apostles left the High Council rejoicing that God had
- 8:50counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.
- 8:53And every day in the temple and from house to house they
- 8:58continued to teach and preach this message.
- 9:01Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus, thank you for the wisdom
- 9:16of that man, Gemalio. Thank you that he had the
- 9:19foresight to say that if this is from people, it's going to fall
- 9:24over in a matter of a matter of weeks.
- 9:28But here we are a matter of thousands of years later and
- 9:33your Spirit and your church is alive and thriving in this
- 9:37world. Jesus is indeed the Messiah.
- 9:43Ah, We love you, Jesus, and we are just so delighted to be part
- 9:48of your church and to have this faith that you have gifted us in
- 9:53you, our Lord and our Messiah. We just lift you up and place
- 10:01you on the highest throne and worship you as our eternal and
- 10:06sovereign God. Lord Jesus, we love You.
- 10:11You are incredible and we are Your disciples.
- 10:17Thank you that you draw us to Your side, that you love us,
- 10:21that you forgive us, and that You invite us into your church
- 10:25and into your family. And it's in Your name that we
- 10:28pray. Amen.
