- 0:02Welcome to Formula Fanatics, the high-octane sub-series of BreakFix
- 0:06Podcast's drive-through motorsports news.
- 0:08This is your pit stop for all things Formula 1, from breaking
- 0:12headlines and race recaps to insider analysis and paddock buzz.
- 0:16Whether you're a diehard Tifoso, a Red Bull loyalist, or just love the
- 0:20thrill of wheel-to-wheel racing, we've got you covered with up-to-date
- 0:23F1 news delivered at full throttle.
- 0:25Strap in, because the lights are out and we're underway.
- 0:28This is Formula Fanatics.
- 0:40So Formula 1 fanatics Yeah.
- 0:42When we recorded the last drive through, we were right on the heels
- 0:47of the Canadian Grand Prix happening.
- 0:49So it feels like a millennia ago that the Canadian Grand Prix happened.
- 1:04Montreal, the first time we had a sprint race in Canada.
- 1:09It was exciting I did not watch that one.
- 1:12You didn't watch the Canadian Grand Prix?
- 1:13Oh my- I didn't watch the sprint race.
- 1:15Oh, I did.
- 1:16It was great.
- 1:17Verstappen was in seventh, then it was Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes.
- 1:20Stroll didn't start.
- 1:21He had a front right issue.
- 1:22Kimi had a great start, thank God, the first time in a very long time.
- 1:27Hülkenberg went from 11th to 15th, and then he went lawn mowing.
- 1:32It became a battle between Russell and Antonelli.
- 1:34I mean, Canada was the race where it looked like Forza, and the
- 1:38sprint race and the race race were no different from one another.
- 1:41The sprint race was just a compact version of mowing the lawn, jumping the
- 1:45curbs, Antonelli and Russell going at it.
- 1:48Mm-hmm.
- 1:49It's great.
- 1:49Hopefully not trying to kill each other.
- 1:51And at the same token, it ended with a bunch of more Forza moves,
- 1:55and it was Russell, Lando, and Kimi, due to some mistakes.
- 1:59So- Wait, I-
- 1:59Kimi kind of gave up the sprint race.
- 2:01Oh, in the sprint race?
- 2:02Yes, in the sprint race.
- 2:04In the race race, I wrote down colder track temperatures than the
- 2:08sprint, and a little bit of rain.
- 2:11So that made track conditions very different the next day, and that meant
- 2:15Piastri starting on intermediates.
- 2:19That's right, both McLarens did.
- 2:21It was the dumbest strategy ever.
- 2:23Buffoonery.
- 2:25Was nobody reading the weather report?
- 2:27I mean, the Villeneuve track is not Le Mans.
- 2:29It's not eight and a half miles around that on one side of it it
- 2:33could be raining, on the other side of it it's gonna be dry.
- 2:35It's a freaking potato, and it's, like, two miles long.
- 2:38What were they thinking?
- 2:40They took a gamble.
- 2:40It did not work.
- 2:41No, it didn't.
- 2:42And then we had this whole extra formation lap chaos because there
- 2:46was a problem with Lindblad, so then the race was basically delayed, but
- 2:50they're doing, like, parade laps around the out- I felt like we did the first
- 2:53five laps at, like, 20 miles an hour.
- 2:55We just kept reforming the race to have a better start.
- 2:59And then that allowed Lando to change his tires, and then Oscar,
- 3:02like, drops, like, way back.
- 3:04This is Binotto's genius, and the Audis s- also started on intermediates.
- 3:09Yeah, that's right.
- 3:10Maybe he thought it was raining where he was because he was crying so much.
- 3:14His eyes were wet, and he's like, "Ah." They suck so bad.
- 3:19Capen Didsuck They're
- 3:22solid in the middle They're solidly sucking.
- 3:26I'm t- God, how did he s- Solid in the middle They're so terrible.
- 3:30Oh.
- 3:31But- Lando ends up in the pits, which gives Kimi the lead.
- 3:36Kimi and Russell are back at it again.
- 3:38It was e- Canada was an exciting race.
- 3:41It really was, like, it was cartoony, and it was Forza, and it was like everything
- 3:46you wanted last year's Formula One race to be between Piastri and Lando,
- 3:50which didn't happen, although Lando's goofy move that he tried to pull.
- 3:53Russell holds onto the lead.
- 3:55There's, like, a ton of back and forth, and then I wrote down, "Lap 31, he
- 4:00cuts the turn and abandons the race.
- 4:02WTF." And that's the moment where I thought, because Kimi got around
- 4:06him, that he was just having a temper tantrum. Mm. And he shut
- 4:09the car off and decided, "I'm done.
- 4:11I'm going home." And he, he, he, like, died in the worst spot.
- 4:14But apparently, there was, like, an issue with the car.
- 4:17Like, the motor just went boom, and that was the end of it.
- 4:19But he did throw a temper tantrum, 'cause then he got- He
- 4:22did … uh, he got a fine for it.
- 4:23Did he?
- 4:24I didn't know that.
- 4:25Yeah, I believe he got a fine.
- 4:26Oh.
- 4:27Yeah, he was fined.
- 4:28Was that for swearing on television?
- 4:30Is that what that one was for?
- 4:31That was for throwing his stuff onto the track like a child.
- 4:33Oh, that's right.
- 4:35That's right.
- 4:35I do remember that, yeah.
- 4:37And then Lando has a gearbox problem, so the, that McLaren's out.
- 4:42Piastri ends up with a penalty because of Albon, and then Perez suddenly goes out as
- 4:49the front suspension just disintegrates.
- 4:52That was wild.
- 4:54He's just, like, going along, and it's like, boop, there
- 4:57goes the whole front end.
- 4:58You're like, "Wait, what the hell was that?" Wild.
- 5:01Leclerc has a code brown moment.
- 5:03Hülkenberg spins, and the race ends with Hamilton on the podium.
- 5:09So it's Antonelli, Hamilton, and Verstappen.
- 5:12And I wrote down, "Cadillac is hot trash. Bottas was 45 seconds behind Stroll, who
- 5:19was a lap down." Hot- Oh, man … garbage.
- 5:25Yeah.
- 5:26You're glossing over- Am I?
- 5:29… something here.
- 5:30What am I… What?
- 5:30What?
- 5:31Tell me.
- 5:31Hamilton on the podium.
- 5:34That was his second time on the podium.
- 5:37Yeah.
- 5:37Weren't you the one who said he was washed up, he should hang it up, he's too old, he
- 5:41should give up racing, he should go back to basket weaving or whatever the hell,
- 5:45and hang out with Kim Kardashian, and steal towels, and do all that other crap?
- 5:50Is he stealing towels for real?
- 5:51She did.
- 5:52No, are you serious?
- 5:54She stole Kimi Antonelli's towel because he sprayed champagne in her eye.
- 5:59This time it was champagne.
- 6:01Oh.
- 6:06So she's, so he d- there's a whole meme about it.
- 6:09There's a whole, Antonelli responds with a whole video of like, "Hey, have you
- 6:13seen my towel?" Oh my, I didn't know that.
- 6:15See, I don't… This is why, I would get sucked down such a rabbit hole if
- 6:20I spent any more time on social media.
- 6:22I missed all of that stuff.
- 6:23And then she, and then she gifted him a special towel.
- 6:27It says, "Here especially for you," or something like that.
- 6:29Yeah, there's a whole thing.
- 6:31It w- you missed a whole thing.
- 6:32Is that because you follow her on Instagram?
- 6:34Is that what it is?
- 6:35I mean, I wouldn't have seen any of this stuff.
- 6:37No, it's because I follow Antonelli and like- Ah … What The F1
- 6:41and, and stuff like that, yeah.
- 6:42Got it.
- 6:43Got it.
- 6:43Got it.
- 6:43Okay.
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:44But Hamilton on the podium, but he's washed up.
- 6:47He should give, he should hang it up.
- 6:48He's terrible.
- 6:49He's just like Alonso, blah, blah, blah.
- 6:52There are three people that should retire, and that's
- 6:55Alonso, Hülkenberg, and Hamilton.
- 6:58I believe Hamilton is, is he second in points in the championship now?
- 7:02Yeah.
- 7:02Or is he still third?
- 7:03Second.
- 7:05Yeah, I think he's second I thought he was ahead of Russell now.
- 7:08Yes, he's second.
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:09Yeah, he's second in championship points, driver's championship.
- 7:13As of Spain, but he's not gonna catch Kimi.
- 7:16There's no way.
- 7:17Uh… He's actually a lot closer than you think.
- 7:19I think he's only, like, 70 points away.
- 7:21That's… There's a lot of season left.
- 7:23There's a lot of races left, and hopefully lady's reliability
- 7:29Ferrari is getting upgrades too.
- 7:31He's 40 point, 41 points behind.
- 7:33Yeah, he's only 41 points behind.
- 7:34That's two races if Kimi gets a DNF.
- 7:37It ain't over yet.
- 7:38I don't… No, there's a long way to go.
- 7:40Yeah, it's a, it's a long season.
- 7:41And then, and, and yeah, I believe both Ferraris are getting two upgrades.
- 7:45Are they a turbo upgrade, I think?
- 7:46They're, they're getting upgrades too.
- 7:49BOP, baby.
- 7:50That's the mid-season change, right?
- 7:52They're allowed to do, like, a bunch of stuff for, like, the halfway point, right?
- 7:56I think this is all coming off of some rule changes that they made because of
- 8:00the issues at the beginning of the season.
- 8:02Right, which as of Canada, despite the antics, I feel like that break we had
- 8:08because of the excursion that we were having, or still ha- I don't know what the
- 8:12heck's going on with that either anymore.
- 8:14The Middle East races were canceled, so we all had all that time for Kimi to
- 8:18practice his launches and everything.
- 8:19I feel like they figured some stuff out, rebalanced the power, and not a BOP thing,
- 8:25but balanced the power distribution with the hybrid system, because the racing
- 8:29feels a little bit more like last year's.
- 8:31They did it after… They didn't do it then.
- 8:34They did it after the near horrific wreck of Bearman.
- 8:39Yeah, so after Suzuka.
- 8:39Well, no, he did wreck, but, like, he, when he crashed trying to
- 8:43avoid the huge difference in speed.
- 8:47That was after those two canceled races, I thought.
- 8:49Yeah, I think that was after Miami.
- 8:51Oh.
- 8:51But yes, they, they rebalanced things a- as a result of that incident, so now you
- 8:56don't see anymore the weird Mario Karting.
- 8:58It's less Mario Kart passing.
- 9:01It's more subtle.
- 9:02Yeah.
- 9:03There's definitely a turbo boost, more like DRS kinda thing going on,
- 9:07which is, you know, I think we're all used to that, but the way it
- 9:09was before was just ridiculous.
- 9:11Yeah, it, the racing I, I feel has definitely gotten better.
- 9:14For sure.
- 9:14It's definitely more palatable now.
- 9:16And Stroll still sucks.
- 9:18That dude's never getting any better.
- 9:20Mm. So Canada, any more hot takes on Canada?
- 9:23I, I do love the fact that Canada, and I quote, "Is shaped like
- 9:27a potato." It i- look at it.
- 9:30It looks like- Like a gr- It looks like… Okay, I'll take it back.
- 9:32It looks like a croissant.
- 9:34A croissant.
- 9:35Croissant, 'cause it's in French Quebec, Montreal, French Canada,
- 9:38so it looks like a croissant.
- 9:39How do you say potato in French?
- 9:43I know frites are fries.
- 9:45Other than that, I don't speak French Frites I don't speak French
- 9:47It's like a raw frites Yeah, right?
- 9:49But if you look… So actually, you can… I think we talked about this before.
- 9:53Tanya and I, a couple years ago, we went up to visit some relatives in
- 9:57Montreal, and we took a afternoon to go over to Circuit de Gilles
- 10:01Villeneuve, and you can drive it.
- 10:02It's open every day of the week.
- 10:04It's a park, and it goes around a casino, and all this kind of stuff.
- 10:08You can drive it with your car, as long as you stay out
- 10:10of the way of the pedestrians.
- 10:11Everything is there, you know, the curbs and all that kind of stuff.
- 10:14It's not that long.
- 10:15It's, like, 2.4 miles.
- 10:17It's like driving NJMP or Summit Point.
- 10:19It's like, it, it's very tight.
- 10:21It's very small.
- 10:21There's not a lot of runoff space.
- 10:23And if you look at its shape from above, I mean, yes, it's an island,
- 10:27but I call it a potato, 'cause it's like, it's just like a little potato
- 10:30that's, you know… Croissant, sorry.
- 10:32It looks like a croissant.
- 10:33It's not that exciting.
- 10:34It's one of those legacy tracks.
- 10:36Like, you have to run it, but then there's legacy tracks.
- 10:39Like the next one.
- 10:40Yeah, like the Funeral Procession
- 10:53God, Monaco.
- 10:54Why do we still race at Monaco?
- 10:56Tradition.
- 10:58Tradition.
- 10:59Monaco should be Formula 1 classique.
- 11:03Like, I feel like they should all be given 1970s era Formula 1 cars and
- 11:07then go race, and do, like, a classic thing to just go, "Isn't racing
- 11:11glamorous?" like it was in the old days.
- 11:12'Cause the new cars, even these new shorter cars, are still too
- 11:17big to go around that track.
- 11:18It's pathetic.
- 11:20Like, watching their hand movements, the amount of, like, full lock they
- 11:24have to give it to go around the hairpin and stuff, it's just wild, and the car
- 11:29barely gets through there, and they're just crawling at, like, 20 miles an hour.
- 11:32It's awful.
- 11:33They should do Monaco in go-karts.
- 11:35That would be exciting, too.
- 11:36Get rid of these formula cars for Monaco, or just do Monaco, but do it in a
- 11:40special way and make them run it on foot.
- 11:43Valtteri Bottas would love that, or bicycles, right?
- 11:45He'd love that.
- 11:46We all know that Monaco is where you qualify is where you finish.
- 11:52Pretty much how it is.
- 11:53And as Sam said to me when we were talking about it, he goes,
- 11:57"What are you talking about, man?
- 11:58The qualifying is the racing.
- 12:01There is no race." And I'm like, "Yeah, th- you know, that's
- 12:03very true, too." So I call it a funeral procession because it is.
- 12:06They're just, like, doing parade laps, and there's zero passing
- 12:10and, you know, it is what it is.
- 12:11So qualifying, Antonelli, Verstappen, Hamilton, Leclerc,
- 12:15except we broke the rule this year.
- 12:18You didn't finish where you started because Verstappen stalls right off
- 12:22the line and just basically goes off into the s- he was out before the first
- 12:27corner because the Ford is unreliable.
- 12:29That's sad.
- 12:31Surprise, surprise I just hope that they're not using that motor
- 12:36as their test motor for their entry into Le Mans next year.
- 12:41They're using the same electronics as the Focus.
- 12:43Ah, that makes a lot more sense.
- 12:46Nah, but this was another race where a half a dozen people DNF'd.
- 12:51All these false starts, like Russell had a false start, and then Perez ends
- 12:55up with a stop-and-go penalty, and then you compound that with all of the pit
- 13:00speed limit penalties that everybody was recei- I was like, after, like,
- 13:05the second one, I think I would've gotten a little, like, suspicious.
- 13:09But after, like, the eighth one, it's like, come on, guys.
- 13:12Like, I think we have a problem here.
- 13:14Lando was eighth for the longest time, then he reports a bunch of misfires,
- 13:18and then he's out on, like, lap 45.
- 13:21That was, like, unimpressive.
- 13:23McLaren out another race.
- 13:25They were out in Canada.
- 13:26They're out here.
- 13:27I did think it was cool that Audi changed their livery to yellow instead of red,
- 13:31so they stood out a little bit more.
- 13:32I think they should've stayed with that, because they went back to
- 13:35the red once we went to Spain.
- 13:37So, that was kinda cool.
- 13:39And one thing I, I love to comment on as we were watching the Monaco
- 13:43race, Russell had come over the radio, and he was talking about
- 13:48how he could see Hajjar's tires.
- 13:52He's, like, freaking Superman.
- 13:54He's got, like, X-ray vision.
- 13:56I don't know how you can see anything when you're two car lengths behind him.
- 14:00What are you talking about?
- 14:02"I can s- I can see his front tires." He's like, "Hajjar's front tires are
- 14:05degrading," blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 14:07And I'm like- He wasn't wrong … he wasn't, but you know what?
- 14:10Mad props to Hajjar, because he toughed it out for as long as he could, and
- 14:15he was doing everything he could to stay in front of Russell and keep him
- 14:19there as much as possible with those, quote-unquote, "degrading tires."
- 14:23Uh, what happened to Russell in this race?
- 14:26There was a drama with that too He had a double penalty.
- 14:30Oh, yeah.
- 14:31He was issued a penalty- He didn't serve it, and then he got another … and
- 14:35then he said that he served it- That was it … because they red flagged the race,
- 14:39and then he was, like, crawling into the pits, and he's like, "See how much time
- 14:42I wasted because Kimi was in the box?
- 14:44I served my penalty.
- 14:46These are not the Jedi that you're looking for.
- 14:48No." That's not how that works, bro.
- 14:51So then they slammed him with another penalty, so by that point he was done.
- 14:54I was like, bro, I would've parked it.
- 14:56I would've been like, "I'm out." Like, who cares?
- 14:58I'm not getting points for this race anyway.
- 15:00I'm double penalized.
- 15:01Just park the car and save the motor.
- 15:03So then I got
- 15:06Bottas.
- 15:07God, Monaco is, like, a test and tune day for Cadillac.
- 15:10I think every race is a test and tune day for Cadillac.
- 15:13I think.
- 15:13I, I think you're right.
- 15:14And Perez with all his stop-and-go penalties, it was insane.
- 15:17And then Bottas over the radio, "We need to cool the car and box."
- 15:21I'm out.
- 15:21I'm done.
- 15:22And, like, the next scene, they're out there, you know, racing around,
- 15:25and, and Bottas is, like, up in the stands, like, "Ah, what's up, guys?"
- 15:28Doing his Bottas thing, and I'm like, "Oh, my God." So then Biermans out.
- 15:33Hamilton gets a five second speeding in the pit penalty.
- 15:36Russell gets his first speeding in the pit penalty.
- 15:39And then, like I said, like, six, eight other people end up with speeding in
- 15:42the pit penalties, and apparently this had to do with the way they measure the
- 15:46length of the pit lane from one end to the other, and because Cadillac had the
- 15:51extra box, it changed the dimensions.
- 15:54But then people were, like, cutting off the corner.
- 15:56They were cutting off the entry because of the extra box.
- 15:59The way they explained it didn't make a ton of sense, but apparently
- 16:03that discrepancy of the length of the pit stalls or whatever was making
- 16:07everybody get these penalties, and I'm like, "Whatever." I don't know,
- 16:11but then it was said that that was happening in the qualifying too, so
- 16:14they should've known that already.
- 16:16But they should have already adjusted for it by the time
- 16:19they got to the race, right?
- 16:20Yeah.
- 16:20I mean, come on.
- 16:21Come on, Formula 1, you can do better than this.
- 16:24So Hajjar has issues with the Red Bull outside of the tires, and I think the
- 16:29best part of this race, other than Lance Stroll wrecking on lap 60, which then
- 16:34caused Leclerc to wreck after that because then the track was falling apart and they
- 16:38red flagged it, is amidst all of this, and this is why I say Russell should have
- 16:43parked the car, Kimi laps him at Monaco.
- 16:47A track that is famous for not being able to pass people, Kimi ends up lapping him.
- 16:54It's like, I was like, "The man. The man." Lap of the gods right there.
- 17:00Yeah.
- 17:00Passing Russell.
- 17:01So again, Russell and his whole penalty shenanigans.
- 17:04Leclerc wrecks on the restart right in the same exact spot where Stroll wrecked.
- 17:11That was wild.
- 17:12What a horrible patch job they did in that corner.
- 17:14I mean, it's like, did they just go, like, to Home Depot, get, like, a
- 17:17bucket and pour it on the track and, like, sweep it in and say, "All right.
- 17:20We got some sealer on here.
- 17:21It's good.
- 17:22Looks black to me." Yes.
- 17:24It's literally falling apart.
- 17:25The race was red flagged on lap 68, and they had 10 laps to go at the end.
- 17:30So it was like, so it was sort of like Monaco had a sprint at
- 17:33the end, which was kind of cool.
- 17:34So standing start on lap 70, and in the end, Kimi dropped the clutch
- 17:40and dumped it and went, and he ends up winning the Monaco Grand Prix.
- 17:43So there's another win for Kimi.
- 17:45Awesome.
- 17:45That was stressful.
- 17:46It was.
- 17:47That was stressful knowing that there was a restart.
- 17:50Yeah.
- 17:50I did not… I wanted a rolling- From a stop, from a standing
- 17:54start … want a rolling restart.
- 17:56Standing start is, like, Kimi's Achilles heel, right?
- 18:00I mean, terrible.
- 18:01Surprised Perez didn't get another stop and go penalty.
- 18:04Now, I, I will say, most exciting Monaco race in a very long time,
- 18:08like, most exciting Canadian GP in history in, as far as I'm concerned.
- 18:13So super cool.
- 18:15And then we talked about this on the other episode, talking about how
- 18:18Le Mans weekend was a little meh, and this and that, and it was, you
- 18:21know, not… It's traditionally on Father's Day, but it was the same
- 18:25weekend as the Spanish Grand Prix.
- 18:42And I thought to myself, I put on my tinfoil hat yet again, Brad, and
- 18:45I said, "I wonder if they scheduled the Spanish GP the same weekend as
- 18:50Le Mans that way Formula 1 drivers can't ever schedule to go race Le
- 18:55Mans." I think you might be reading a little too much into the tea leaves.
- 18:59I mean, it's not usually, they don't usually have a race on the same weekend.
- 19:02Correct.
- 19:03It's to stop Max from going to do Le Mans if they put them
- 19:07on the same weekend, right?
- 19:08Because then he would lose the points.
- 19:10It wouldn't matter right now.
- 19:12No, it wouldn't, and that brings up a very good point because I read somewhere
- 19:16that his contract is also subject to how good the car is for the year.
- 19:22So there's rumors going around that the car is so bad that he may be able to get
- 19:27out of his contract going into next year.
- 19:29So where does he go then?
- 19:31Yeah.
- 19:32He goes to endurance racing, which is what he really wants to do.
- 19:34I think he's done with Formula 1, honestly.
- 19:37I don't know that he's done yet, but he does wanna do endurance racing.
- 19:41So does he sign with Ferrari?
- 19:44I don't know.
- 19:44And help Ferrari's endurance racing team?
- 19:46Didn't Leclerc just re-sign his contract for, like, the next 50
- 19:49years or something like that?
- 19:51Like he's never gonna leave.
- 19:51I don't mean Ferrari F1, I mean Ferrari WEC.
- 19:54No.
- 19:55No, he'll run a- Probably Mercedes.
- 19:57Yeah.
- 19:58He's been running that Mercedes, so.
- 20:01Maybe they'll have him drive the Ford in Le Mans.
- 20:04Hey, now.
- 20:05Hey, now.
- 20:05That'd be good.
- 20:06That'd be really good, actually.
- 20:08But speaking of contracts, there was a lot of hype going into these
- 20:12couple races where it was like Alonso goes to every track as if
- 20:17it's his last time at the track.
- 20:19It's like all this whole sob story, and it's like, come on, guys.
- 20:21Like I, I… We know Alonso needs to retire, and he's there for
- 20:24the paycheck, but this year is worse than any year previous.
- 20:27At least in years prior, Stroll would be doing lead follow with Alonso.
- 20:32Alonso's, now he's just out there, he's lost, and the car is garbage, and,
- 20:34you know, everything we already know.
- 20:36But then I hear that Briatore's coming back.
- 20:41And he's trying to get Alonso to go to Alpine, and I'm like, is there
- 20:46blood to squeeze out of this turnip?
- 20:48I don't know that Alonso going to Alpine is better than keeping Gasly
- 20:52and Colapinto, because Colapinto's the one that's on the chopping block.
- 20:56I don't know.
- 20:58Couldn't tell you.
- 20:59So I've got a question for you.
- 21:01Hmm.
- 21:01I know we're not done talking about the Spanish Grand Prix, but what is
- 21:05more likely, Verstappen winning another Formula One championship or Hamilton
- 21:11winning another Formula One championship?
- 21:13Let's just keep things at sort of a static pace.
- 21:16Let's just assume not that Kimi wins every race, because we've broken that streak as
- 21:22a result of the Spanish GP, but let's just say he's able to maintain a substantial
- 21:27lead, you know, always podium every race with the majority wins in his back pocket.
- 21:33There's a h- very, very high probability Kimi's gonna win the, the season, right?
- 21:36That's not to say that Hamilton won't podium the championship this year,
- 21:42but I don't think he's gonna win it unless something catastrophic happens
- 21:45to the Mercedes or something happens to Kimi or, you know, just I don't
- 21:49think he's gonna have a repeat of last year, meaning Kimi, like, kind of being
- 21:53in the middle of the pack and sort of finding his way and learning the
- 21:56tracks, and I think he was sandbagging.
- 21:58I've said that before.
- 21:59I have a strong suspicion Hamilton's gonna have a good year, but he's
- 22:04not gonna have a winning year.
- 22:05He's not gonna get his eighth, right?
- 22:06It's just not gonna happen.
- 22:08I don't think anybody else is even close.
- 22:10Tanya, do you think there's even anybody in contention after that?
- 22:13Well, technically Russell's only not even, I think, nine points behind him.
- 22:18Behind Hamilton.
- 22:20Yeah.
- 22:20But he's, like, two temper tantrums and a flat tire away from, like, losing
- 22:24that too, so that doesn't matter, right?
- 22:26A problem is it's not looking good for Mercedes right now, 'cause they're
- 22:30having too many reliability issues.
- 22:33Like, two is too many.
- 22:35Yes.
- 22:36For them, for sure.
- 22:37And it, was it more than two?
- 22:40Did Russell have it twice this year?
- 22:42Maybe it was just one each, but, like, that's two too many, so if they keep
- 22:45having troubles like that, then Don't know what to say Well, and they need to
- 22:51chill out too, because what's funny is Antonelli's doing this Senna thing where
- 22:56they tell him to slow down, and then he puts, like, the personal best down, like
- 23:00the fastest lap of the race, and then he just continues to truck until the end.
- 23:03He's like, he's just ignoring them.
- 23:05Or it becomes this Senna versus Prost thing between him and Russell where
- 23:09they're trying to kill each other on track, and it's like, "Guys, you gotta
- 23:13get it together." But the, I think the bigger problem is Kimi's the faster
- 23:17driver- Mm-hmm … of the two of them, but he's not the lead driver on the team.
- 23:22And I hate to say, Russell's gotta eat some crow.
- 23:25Oh, 'cause one of those races, whichever it was, that BS was going
- 23:29on where he was being held up.
- 23:31Yeah.
- 23:32Uh, that was the, it was the, the Spanish GP, because he was
- 23:37being held up, being held up.
- 23:38He finally got around him.
- 23:39Yep.
- 23:40And then it was, like, two laps later, the car Chernobyled.
- 23:43Yeah, for Kimi.
- 23:44Yes.
- 23:44Yeah.
- 23:45God, that was, like, heartbreaking.
- 23:47Yeah, it failed on lap 63 is what I have on my, my note.
- 23:50And then Leclerc ended up with, like, power steering issues at the same time.
- 23:54So I don't know.
- 23:54They need to figure that out, and Russell just needs to, like… I get it.
- 23:58Like, it's taken him 10 years to get to this point, and, "I deserve my
- 24:02championship," and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 24:04Okay, great, but Kimi's the faster driver at the end of the day, so they need to
- 24:09figure out their team orders or whatever.
- 24:11Yeah.
- 24:12If you're so fast, then when you let Kimi go around, you breathe down his neck and
- 24:17don't let him get 20 seconds ahead of you.
- 24:19Right.
- 24:19Exactly.
- 24:20Or your job is to fend off Hamilton, 'cause then it becomes a
- 24:25manufacturer's game, and you don't wanna give it to Ferrari either.
- 24:28So I don't know.
- 24:30It's a very strange sport to think that the politics have to get involved, but
- 24:34they really do if you wanna lock it in.
- 24:35And has Russell even ever come in second in the championship?
- 24:40I'd take a silver.
- 24:41Just to say I got a silver, I'd be happy with it.
- 24:43But he deserves the gold.
- 24:45Ah, I get it.
- 24:46He deserves it.
- 24:46Yeah.
- 24:47Stuffleupagus deserves it.
- 24:49Uh, so anyway, I have the starting grid for the Spanish GP: Russell,
- 24:54Hammy, Kimi, Lando, and Verstappen.
- 24:56That was the top five.
- 24:57That's where they qualified.
- 24:58So lap six, Stroll was out.
- 25:00The gearbox exploded.
- 25:03Charles got his brake swap, so no more complaints about
- 25:06how terrible the Brembos were.
- 25:08What did, what did they end up putting on there?
- 25:09Carbotechs or something like that?
- 25:11Is that what they're using now?
- 25:12Duralast.
- 25:13Duralast.
- 25:14Duralast.
- 25:15From Trash Auto.
- 25:16I have to report on this.
- 25:18Alonso's Aston Martin made it to lap 40.
- 25:22That was impressive.
- 25:22That, that was pretty good.
- 25:24I mean, he beat that 25 number that they seem to be hitting every time.
- 25:28Then there was a virtual safety car, and then the Hülkenberg thing.
- 25:33Talk about a freak accident.
- 25:36Do you guys remember this?
- 25:37Oh.
- 25:37Oh, yeah.
- 25:38So we didn't know what happened until after the race, 'cause it
- 25:41was like suddenly it was down.
- 25:43He was, again, solidly in the middle.
- 25:46Yeah, I think he was gonna get points, actually.
- 25:48The two liter turbo exploded, right?
- 25:50And then suddenly it was like, he's in the pits and he doesn't come out
- 25:53of the pits, and it's like, "What just happened?" And a rock hit the
- 25:58emergency shutoff, ricocheted up from Liam Lawson, knocked off the emergency
- 26:07shutoff kill switch, and killed the car.
- 26:14What a fluke.
- 26:15Like, you have a higher chance of getting hit by lightning and winning the lottery
- 26:20than that happening, a projectile hitting the kill switch and turning the car off.
- 26:25I feel like they should have better engineered it so
- 26:27that's impossible to happen.
- 26:29Right?
- 26:30They should have s- foreseen that happening.
- 26:33Well, its placement is a little strange, too, and I get it, because
- 26:36it's designed for somebody to reach it from outside the car.
- 26:39Well, somebody did reach it from outside the car.
- 26:43It did, it, it worked then, in that case.
- 26:46It's like somebody with a slingshot.
- 26:47Pow.
- 26:48Yeah.
- 26:48As, as intended.
- 26:49Bart Simpson hit it.
- 26:50That was a Mario move.
- 26:52That was bizarre.
- 26:53That was the blue shell right there, right?
- 26:54It's like, boom, done.
- 26:56You're out.
- 26:57So Hülkenberg's out, and then McLaren was all sorts of tattle-taling on Kimi.
- 27:03There was all sorts of just nonsense over the radio.
- 27:05Oh.
- 27:06Yes.
- 27:06This is the race he was riding the track limits.
- 27:10Yes.
- 27:14And every time Kimi went through that complex, and then Lando's like, "He did
- 27:18it again. He went over the line. Blah, blah, blah." And then they would show the
- 27:23shots from, like, above from the cameras.
- 27:24They're like, "Nah, he's, he's, he's still in there." I mean, barely.
- 27:29You don't have the superhuman vision like Russell does, where he can analyze
- 27:33Hajar's tires at 170 miles an hour.
- 27:36I'm sorry, Lando, put your glasses on.
- 27:38But Kimi was fine.
- 27:40There were a couple times he pushed the limit.
- 27:42Oh, man, it was like every other lap, "Oh, he did it again.
- 27:45Did it again.
- 27:47McLaren is protesting.
- 27:49Did it again." It's like, "Stop.
- 27:51Shut up." So then it doesn't matter because Kimi's pushing, pushing,
- 27:56pushing, and then he ends up out on lap three, like I said, Leclerc
- 27:59with the power steering issue.
- 28:00We thought the race was gonna end under a virtual safety car, remember?
- 28:04It was like a nail-biter even.
- 28:06This one was just like, "Come on, guys." And then they went green
- 28:10on lap 65 And there was some real confusion about the tail end, 'cause
- 28:17this was also the race where there were a ton of cars that didn't finish.
- 28:21Like, a huge amount of cars, like, just retired in this race
- 28:24too, like almost every race.
- 28:25And it said, I remember reading, we were talking about the results, Tanya.
- 28:29I remember it was like Albon was, like, six laps ahead, but he ended three
- 28:34positions behind people that DNF'd, but there were a total of eight DNFs.
- 28:38So I read that then, I was like, "God," He was DNF too … "that's
- 28:40a lot of cars out." He was DNF too.
- 28:42Yeah, he ended up DNF to, as well.
- 28:45So in the end, Hamilton, Russell, and Lando up on the podium.
- 28:50Woo.
- 28:51That's how the race ends.
- 28:52First.
- 28:52And, and I will say, and I- First … Brad, I know you've been biting your
- 28:54tongue 'cause you wanna talk about this.
- 28:55Hamilton, for once, was given the decency, the dignity, the grace, whatever word you
- 29:04wanna use to describe it, that Ferrari didn't screw up his pit strategy, and
- 29:09that's what allowed him to win the race.
- 29:11Had it not been for that, had Ferrari Ferrari'd, as Tanya likes to say,
- 29:16Hamilton would not have won that race.
- 29:18But because he pit at such a weird time- It would've been really interesting to
- 29:24see It would've been closer … he was on an absolute tear, and was gaining, and
- 29:30if they would've kept going, there was a lot of speculation that he might have
- 29:35been able to get around them without that.
- 29:38You're talking about Kimi?
- 29:39No, Hamilton.
- 29:40Kimi was faster than Hamilton.
- 29:42He was flying until the car broke.
- 29:44No.
- 29:44So Hamilton did the, the pit and started catching them.
- 29:47No.
- 29:47That was where he was behind, and he was just reeling in lap after lap.
- 29:52Like, the gap was just like broo.
- 29:54Yeah.
- 29:55The gap was shrinking.
- 29:57So it would've been interesting to see, I think towards the end,
- 30:01Antonelli started picking up the pace.
- 30:04Right.
- 30:05But then his car blew up.
- 30:06Correct.
- 30:07But Amp- That's what I'm saying … ended 20 second, 19 and a half
- 30:10seconds ahead of George Russell.
- 30:14He was on an absolute tear the whole time.
- 30:17So it would've been really interesting to actually see how it would've played out
- 30:20had that virtual whatever not happened.
- 30:23Right.
- 30:24Exactly.
- 30:25So I think between that and the pit strategy with Ferrari that pretty
- 30:29much locked in Hamilton, they made the right move because they put
- 30:32the harder tires on, and then he was just stretched them out, right?
- 30:35And said, "That's it. One pit strategy, let's go," instead of
- 30:38all these shenanigans or whatever.
- 30:39A- and then I think he pit under the VSC, which locked him in anyways.
- 30:43Then he had fresh, like, softs or something like that, right?
- 30:45If I remember how that ended.
- 30:46So yeah, that was that.
- 30:49That was all she wrote.
- 30:50Now, the question is, Brad, and I know, you know, you're, "Oh, well, Hamilton,
- 30:53he's washed up," and this and that.
- 30:55The question has yet to be answered in the sense that it's taken him two years
- 31:00to win his first race with Ferrari.
- 31:02I'm not saying he's a bad driver, whatever.
- 31:06But the question is, can he repeat that?
- 31:08Can Ferrari get out of its own head and do more like what they did at the Spanish
- 31:14GP, or is it gonna be business as usual?
- 31:17So- Especially if Leclerc is having a good weekend, because he didn't have a
- 31:22good weekend at the Spanish GP either.
- 31:24He has yet to have a good weekend, I think since, like, the first race.
- 31:28Yes.
- 31:28But, you know, everybody likes to pull the data sets and blah, blah, blah.
- 31:32So, so if you follow the trends, 'cause they pulled this
- 31:36one out already a while ago.
- 31:37Of their butts.
- 31:39'Cause every team, which this is only his third team being on, but he's nev-
- 31:43he's always done shit the first year.
- 31:44So even Mercedes, he came in terrible first year, and then the second year.
- 31:49So they're like, "This is gonna be his year," if that trend holds.
- 31:54And if it doesn't?
- 31:55I don't know.
- 31:55There's still 14 races left, I think.
- 31:58So I think it's still entirely way too early to say anything.
- 32:02I get that.
- 32:03So Brad, I'm gonna ask you this question.
- 32:05If Hamilton gets to the end of the year and he doesn't win, but
- 32:09let's just say he podiums the, on the championship, second or third.
- 32:14Doesn't win the championship.
- 32:15Do you think he should continue?
- 32:18Definitely.
- 32:19Why?
- 32:19Why?
- 32:20Because he's still better than Stroll.
- 32:22And Stroll is still gonna be out there.
- 32:25He's still better than- Second or third in the championship means he's better
- 32:28than 19 or 20 other fucking drivers.
- 32:32Right, right, right.
- 32:33So, uh, would you hang it up if you were that close to
- 32:37tasting another championship?
- 32:39I still think after 20 years, I would just go do something else.
- 32:43I would wanna go win a different championship.
- 32:45I wanna w- you know what I, and b- but that's just my personality.
- 32:49Like, I'd wanna mix it up versus, I don't know, feels like it gets boring.
- 32:52But how many Formula 1 drivers have only done their one thing?
- 32:55Like, all of them.
- 32:57I think it was more so in the old days that they did different stuff than now,
- 33:02you know, where they did mix it up.
- 33:03Or like, again, like a Graham Hill type, that era, where they would go,
- 33:07you know, do Indy, and they would go do, you know, Le Mans, stuff like that.
- 33:11A Graham Hill type, who was not a seven-time world champion.
- 33:14He was a Formula 1 world champion, though.
- 33:16That's all that matters.
- 33:17He's the only one with a Triple Crown.
- 33:19I think if Hamilton only had one, maybe two championships, and he finishes
- 33:25the season, like, fourth or fifth, then yeah, maybe, maybe hang it up.
- 33:30But he's proving, as long as the car and the t- the team supports
- 33:35him, he's proving that he's still got it, and he's still competitive.
- 33:40I say, yeah, he should come back another season and go for a championship,
- 33:44especially if he finishes second.
- 33:46If he finishes second, there's no reason he shouldn't come back and try.
- 33:50Like, he can, you can almost taste the victory at that point.
- 33:53Maybe.
- 33:53You can almost taste that eighth championship.
- 33:56Especially if it's close.
- 33:57Like, you're two points away or, or it was a, it came down to one
- 34:01race difference or something.
- 34:02I mean, who knows how this plays out.
- 34:04Suddenly the Ferrari become a turd.
- 34:06You know, there's always that.
- 34:07So let's just flip it around then.
- 34:08Let's say he doesn't.
- 34:10Let's say he does win the championship.
- 34:12That's where I wanna go with this.
- 34:13Let's say he does win the championship.
- 34:15Does he continue?
- 34:17Yes.
- 34:18So either way, Hamilton lives to race another year, if
- 34:22that's what you're saying.
- 34:23I think so, yeah.
- 34:24Plus, he might have to, depending what his contract says.
- 34:27I mean, I think Ferrari's gonna do everything in their power
- 34:30to get Kimi at some point.
- 34:32But, uh, unfortunately, he's probably stuck at…
- 34:34I mean, that's not unfortunate.
- 34:35He's with a good team.
- 34:36He's gonna be stuck at Mercedes for a while.
- 34:38They will have to pay up.
- 34:40Toto has invested too much.
- 34:44Yeah, plus if, if Ferrari can win with another driver, they wouldn't
- 34:48dump the championship driver that they just won with just to get
- 34:51Kimi just because he's Italian.
- 34:53Oh.
- 34:53That would be some Ferrari bullshit, though.
- 34:56I mean- That would be some Ferrari shit.
- 34:58So here's the thing, if Leclerc ends, like, trash- Well, true,
- 35:03yeah, if Leclerc ends, like, trash- He'll be driving an Audi.
- 35:08He'll be driving a Cadillac.
- 35:10He might have just renewed his contract, but- Yeah Contracts
- 35:13were made to be broken.
- 35:14That's just a piece of paper.
- 35:15Yeah.
- 35:15I think barring Hamilton finishing 10th or worse, he comes back
- 35:21for another season at least.
- 35:22Probably, and we'll be here to comment on it if he does.
- 35:25I'll change it.
- 35:25I'll, I'll change that to seventh or worst, seventh or worst in championship,
- 35:29he'll come back for another season.
- 35:31Be interesting to see how that goes.
- 35:33He at least finishes his contract.
- 35:34I don't know how long his contract's through.
- 35:36So when do they announce the drivers for next year?
- 35:39That happens in the fall after the last race.
- 35:41When do we get to know about that?
- 35:42When the silly season happens.
- 35:43What is, what is that?
- 35:45That's what they call the, the post-season trading of drivers and- Oh … contract
- 35:49renewals and all that bullshit.
- 35:50They call the silly season.
- 35:50It's like the NFL draft.
- 35:52Yeah.
- 35:53All right.
- 35:53Well, we have Austria up next, and then after that, what do we have before
- 35:57the next Formula Fanatics episode?
- 36:00Uh, British GP over 4th of July weekend.
