Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome into the Trophy Room, a space to celebrate in
- 0:03Speaker 1: the excellence of athletes who have won at the highest level.
- 0:05Speaker 1: But there's only one criteria. You have to have at
- 0:08Speaker 1: least one of the same piece of hardware and as
- 0:11Speaker 1: my personal shelf. Okay, and you have quite a few
- 0:15Speaker 1: so to join. On today's episode, we've got someone who
- 0:17Speaker 1: has achieved acclades both at the collegiate level and the
- 0:20Speaker 1: global level, with Olympic medalists, two time NCAA individual champion,
- 0:26Speaker 1: one of Time Magazine's most influential people, a published author.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I'm that girl, Jordan Chiles. Welcome to the Trophy Room.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:37Speaker 3: This is honestly like the best feeling ever, especially being
- 0:41Speaker 3: with you, Candice. I'm just like right now, I'm trying
- 0:44Speaker 3: that to vangirl, But thank you so much for having me.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Thanks for coming. It's a nice little space here too. Hey,
- 0:49Speaker 1: all these trophies about to find yours. So number three
- 0:54Speaker 1: is close to my heart. That's the number I wear.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Three time WBA cham three different teams. I've got three kids.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I've got a teenager that's crazy. So I like to
- 1:04Speaker 1: do a little thing where I ask the guests three
- 1:06Speaker 1: questions okay, okay that are unique to you. Okay, you're
- 1:10Speaker 1: a sneaker head like myself, and you'll even pick sneakers
- 1:13Speaker 1: to match your leotard at times. If you were to
- 1:17Speaker 1: collab with an athlete to design a sneaker, who would be.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I mean, I feel like that's kind of obvious me personally.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It would probably be Michael Jordan.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Okay, only because I am named after him.
- 1:34Speaker 3: He's an icon, He's somebody that you know. Not only
- 1:37Speaker 3: does he have his own shoe already. I feel like
- 1:38Speaker 3: that'd be a really cool collab. But if it wasn't him,
- 1:42Speaker 3: I feel like it would be Asia. I feel like
- 1:44Speaker 3: she our brains connect differently when we're together, so I
- 1:48Speaker 3: feel like we would create a really dope shoe, and
- 1:51Speaker 3: she already has one out.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And we are going to discuss a lot of Asia
- 1:54Speaker 1: Wilson later in the show. You and I are both
- 1:58Speaker 1: huge Beyonce fans all day, so let's debate three songs
- 2:04Speaker 1: that come to mind.
- 2:04Speaker 4: First, go I'm that Girl.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Sorry and exo.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Ooh XO I like that and you did a Beyonce
- 2:17Speaker 1: inspired routine at the Olympics. Just talk about how that
- 2:21Speaker 1: came to life and came to be Well.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I went to.
- 2:25Speaker 3: The Beyonce Renaissance Tours us as all of us said exactly.
- 2:30Speaker 3: So I was sitting there and I was listening to
- 2:33Speaker 3: her music, and then I went to go watch her
- 2:35Speaker 3: documentary in theaters, and I was like, this lady has
- 2:38Speaker 3: done so much.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So many dang things.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I was just like, Okay, why can't I bring the
- 2:44Speaker 3: Renaissance tour love fantastic?
- 2:46Speaker 2: So I decided to.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Put all of her amazing music together from Renaissance and
- 2:50Speaker 3: give something.
- 2:50Speaker 2: You know, spectacular.
- 2:52Speaker 3: We already entertained the crowd, so why not give them
- 2:55Speaker 3: a tour of being able to enjoy their favorite music.
- 2:59Speaker 3: But also I put flips with it as well. So
- 3:02Speaker 3: it was kind of the Gymnastics Renaissance Tour that I
- 3:05Speaker 3: got to enjoy and put out to the world.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Well, I was one of those people that really enjoyed
- 3:10Speaker 1: it and tuned in every single time you did your
- 3:13Speaker 1: floor routine.
- 3:14Speaker 4: You grew up in a basketball family.
- 3:16Speaker 1: You mentioned that you are named after my goat, Michael Jordan,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and you also haven't mj inspired tattoo I do.
- 3:25Speaker 3: It's on my left arm and it says twenty three
- 3:28Speaker 3: So I have a necklace that's twenty three. All my
- 3:31Speaker 3: shoes are Jordan. I have a jersey that's twenty three.
- 3:34Speaker 4: You're twenty three.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I'm twenty three. Yeah, crazy, literally like in my Jordan year.
- 3:39Speaker 2: It's great. Everything about it.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I just love And I've done a lot of things
- 3:42Speaker 3: that he did when he was younger. I'm pretty sure
- 3:46Speaker 3: you've seen the shrug a lot. I've gotten the flu game.
- 3:50Speaker 3: So it's been kind of you know, the connection is there.
- 3:53Speaker 4: It's definitely there.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So I want to talk about these WNBA women's basketball
- 3:57Speaker 1: players and the connection did gymnastics because I grew up
- 4:01Speaker 1: a gymnastics fan. I grew up watching the Magnificent Seven.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I'm significantly older than you, so I grew up in
- 4:06Speaker 1: the dominique Who they are, the Dominie Dawes era nineteen
- 4:08Speaker 1: ninety six Olympics, Magnificent Seven. They like, I mean, inspired
- 4:13Speaker 1: so many other young girls. But I want to know
- 4:18Speaker 1: what events these hoopers would be able to do or
- 4:20Speaker 1: what do you think would be their best event? Okay,
- 4:23Speaker 1: so Kaitlyn Clark, what do you think she she strikes
- 4:27Speaker 1: you as as a gymnast.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Okay, so she's really fast, especially when she dribbles, especially
- 4:31Speaker 3: when she does all of her plays, she's very you know,
- 4:35Speaker 3: demanding to the core into where the ball goes.
- 4:38Speaker 2: So I feel like she would be really good at Vault.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Oh wow, I like that.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I think only because she has the you know, the fastness,
- 4:44Speaker 3: and she also once she gets to that point, she'll
- 4:48Speaker 3: understand the block, the twist, that everything. So I think
- 4:51Speaker 3: Caitlyn Clark would be good at Vault.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Okay, to be to.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Be determined, we're gonna we're gonna put her up to
- 4:56Speaker 1: that challenge. Uh, Sabrina, you ask you, Brina.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I think since she just gives very elegant, her slick back, ponytail,
- 5:06Speaker 3: everything about her just like it gives very elegant.
- 5:09Speaker 2: So I can see her on Beam Okay.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like she you know, could probably do
- 5:13Speaker 3: a really good split and that she can have that
- 5:16Speaker 3: control because she also does very well.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Controlling the ball.
- 5:20Speaker 3: I'm not gonna she knows how to control the everything.
- 5:25Speaker 3: So definitely Beam.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Okay, We're gonna go with crosstown rival Juju Watkins.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Oh Juju Okay.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Juju is very she has the moves she does. She
- 5:38Speaker 3: you know, she gives very dominate when she whether she's
- 5:43Speaker 3: trying to. For instance, the big tins just happened. She
- 5:46Speaker 3: was very grounded, I'm this is what I'm doing, this
- 5:49Speaker 3: is how I'm gonna show out.
- 5:50Speaker 2: So she's a she's a showstopper. So I definitely could
- 5:52Speaker 2: say floor.
- 5:54Speaker 4: And that's your okay, that says a lot.
- 5:56Speaker 1: That's her event too, Okay, Asia Wilson, And you don't
- 6:00Speaker 1: have to go all different events.
- 6:02Speaker 4: You can do you can.
- 6:04Speaker 3: I feel like Asia could be an all arounder. I
- 6:07Speaker 3: think Asia could be literally in each and every spot
- 6:10Speaker 3: because Asia has so many different techniques autility. Literally not
- 6:15Speaker 3: only does she have the ability to you know, control herself,
- 6:19Speaker 3: but she also knows how to be dominant in a
- 6:21Speaker 3: lot of things. And seeing her on the court all
- 6:24Speaker 3: the time, it's very inspiring. So I feel like she's
- 6:26Speaker 3: an all arounder and a lot of what she could
- 6:29Speaker 3: do in gymnastics, whether it's vault, whether it's being whether
- 6:32Speaker 3: she can you know, she does a little dance moves
- 6:34Speaker 3: here and there, like she does a lot of dances exactly,
- 6:36Speaker 3: and especially bars. I feel like since she is taller
- 6:39Speaker 3: sometimes in gymnastics, being a little lengthier gives a lot
- 6:44Speaker 3: more detail in like you know, a handstand or something
- 6:46Speaker 3: like that.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So, speaking of Asia Wilson, you and her were named
- 6:50Speaker 1: one of the Times Women of the Year and you
- 6:54Speaker 1: all did an amazing photo shoot together. Saw the voice
- 6:57Speaker 1: over and the videos of you all connect. What was
- 7:01Speaker 1: it like to receive an honor like that.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It was a dream come true.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Honestly, I think the biggest thing was understanding that I
- 7:11Speaker 3: had the recognition that as a little kid I didn't
- 7:14Speaker 3: get and knowing that I'm a part of such amazing
- 7:17Speaker 3: woman in general, being a part of Time one hundred
- 7:20Speaker 3: women like it still gets me, Like I have the
- 7:23Speaker 3: magazine in my house and I just look at it
- 7:25Speaker 3: every day like, Wow, I'm very thankful, I'm very honored.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And to do it with Asia it was just.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Even more amazing because she has done so much within
- 7:34Speaker 3: her life as well, and seeing the recognition in women's
- 7:38Speaker 3: sports and people are being able to understand that we
- 7:41Speaker 3: don't just get to wake up and be this beautiful thing.
- 7:44Speaker 3: We also do go through a lot, whether it's mentally, physically, emotionally.
- 7:48Speaker 3: So it was just a really good feeling and I'm
- 7:51Speaker 3: very proud of myself that I'm able to be able
- 7:53Speaker 3: to be a part of such amazing covers. Like I
- 7:58Speaker 3: was at the gala and I was seeing all the
- 8:00Speaker 3: covers being seen. I was like, oh my gosh, Beyonce
- 8:02Speaker 3: was one, Oh my gosh, there's you know, Michelle Obama.
- 8:05Speaker 3: There's all these amazing covers. So it was just an
- 8:08Speaker 3: honor and I want to change the world for it.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Like I think of every single moment that I've gone through,
- 8:14Speaker 3: whether it was trauma, whether it was you know, an injury,
- 8:18Speaker 3: and just to understand that I was able to come
- 8:19Speaker 3: back stronger and be independent and just stand my ground
- 8:23Speaker 3: of who I am.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And standing your ground of who you are and being
- 8:27Speaker 1: who you are at all times. I think the thing
- 8:29Speaker 1: that I was so impressed with being Asia's teammate is
- 8:33Speaker 1: that she was always unapologetically herself. And within this generation,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you speak about being who you are for the younger generation,
- 8:43Speaker 1: what does that look like on a daily basis? How
- 8:46Speaker 1: difficult has that been of a process, because sometimes the
- 8:49Speaker 1: world's not okay with us being ourselves.
- 8:52Speaker 3: It's been a crazy process. I definitely had to learn
- 8:55Speaker 3: about myself before I felt like the younger generation could
- 8:58Speaker 3: really be like, oh, I understand who she is. I
- 9:02Speaker 3: understand where she's going and what she's trying to do.
- 9:05Speaker 3: But learning myself only makes it easier for the younger
- 9:09Speaker 3: generation to run faster and find themselves in a way,
- 9:13Speaker 3: for them to be protected, and for them to stand
- 9:16Speaker 3: their ground and say no when it's the right time.
- 9:18Speaker 2: So I'm happy that now. You know, a lot of people.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Say simone changes the game of what our sport's supposed
- 9:25Speaker 3: to look like, and I can say I've changed the
- 9:27Speaker 3: culture of what our sport looks like. And you know,
- 9:30Speaker 3: whether it's my hair, whether it's my tattoos, whether it's
- 9:33Speaker 3: my nails, and being able to finally find that within
- 9:36Speaker 3: myself and embrace it more, I know that the younger generation,
- 9:40Speaker 3: or even above me, they have the ability to do anything,
- 9:44Speaker 3: because right now it's only showing more of what they're
- 9:47Speaker 3: trying to do and what they're trying to pursue in
- 9:49Speaker 3: their life.
- 9:50Speaker 1: And speaking of the hair, and I mean, first of all,
- 9:54Speaker 1: the baby hair is always laid. I mean, you will
- 9:56Speaker 1: finish the floor routine, you will finish practice.
- 9:59Speaker 4: I don't know there has been every single time. Yeah,
- 10:02Speaker 4: your baby hair is laid. So just know that, thank you.
- 10:04Speaker 2: I'm trying, you know, no, it is late trying.
- 10:07Speaker 1: You released a memoir I'm That Girl, earlier this month. Yes,
- 10:12Speaker 1: New York Times bestseller. Congratulations, thank you twenty three years young.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I know in writing that, what did you hope to
- 10:23Speaker 1: put out to the world? What was your intention behind
- 10:26Speaker 1: you know, writing this? And this has been a statement.
- 10:30Speaker 1: I mean, you talked about this at the Olympics, about
- 10:32Speaker 1: telling yours I'm That Girl. What has this meant to you,
- 10:35Speaker 1: about being able to put this out in the world,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and what was that process?
- 10:39Speaker 3: Like, it's so funny that you asked me that, because
- 10:41Speaker 3: I was on Twitter on the way here and I
- 10:44Speaker 3: was looking at all the tweets people were saying, and
- 10:47Speaker 3: one tweet that came across was saying that I was
- 10:50Speaker 3: writing stuff that was misleading to readers. And when I
- 10:54Speaker 3: was looking at it, I was a little confused, and
- 10:56Speaker 3: I was trying to understand, how can I mislead us
- 11:00Speaker 3: that is my own story, How can I mislead myself
- 11:04Speaker 3: in a way of being like, Okay, this is what
- 11:06Speaker 3: I wrote, this is how I feel, this is you know,
- 11:09Speaker 3: And like you were saying, sometimes people don't like hearing
- 11:12Speaker 3: the truth or hearing what's right, and so I just
- 11:15Speaker 3: want everybody to understand that this story was something for
- 11:19Speaker 3: you to understand how I am sitting here or standing
- 11:22Speaker 3: at twenty three years old being this strong, being, this
- 11:25Speaker 3: independent being, this amazing woman trying to succeed in her
- 11:30Speaker 3: life and the trauma and all that stuff was something
- 11:33Speaker 3: that I wanted to give out to the world.
- 11:36Speaker 2: You know, I'm that girl.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Just means really, you know, I can look in this self,
- 11:40Speaker 3: myself in the mirror and be like, Okay, I've gone
- 11:43Speaker 3: through a lot of stuff in my life. I've gone
- 11:46Speaker 3: through trauma, I was verbally and emotionally abused by my coach.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I was doing all these things, but yet those things
- 11:52Speaker 3: only made me stronger. So really it's to you know,
- 11:55Speaker 3: show everybody that no matter what you go through and
- 11:58Speaker 3: what you have to sacker, you're going to be able
- 12:01Speaker 3: to come out of that and be stronger than what
- 12:03Speaker 3: you thought. And I'm just happy that now my story
- 12:07Speaker 3: is out and instead of people going back and forth
- 12:09Speaker 3: trying to create it, they can just read it and
- 12:11Speaker 3: be like, Okay, look I get where she's at now,
- 12:14Speaker 3: and that's only because she was able to write her
- 12:17Speaker 3: story how she's supposed to. So I hope everybody enjoys
- 12:21Speaker 3: it though, Like that's how I see, like.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Here's the power.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And I'll tell you this because this is something that
- 12:26Speaker 1: I think all female athletes struggle with. M We live
- 12:31Speaker 1: in a world that wants to keep us in a
- 12:34Speaker 1: certain place. Okay, they don't want us to talk about sports,
- 12:37Speaker 1: they don't want us to play hard, they don't want
- 12:41Speaker 1: us to be strong, they don't want us to speak
- 12:43Speaker 1: our mind, they don't want us to do all those things.
- 12:45Speaker 1: And people like you are changing that narrative and doing
- 12:47Speaker 1: it unapologetically. Thank you, And I will tell you that
- 12:51Speaker 1: people that need that message are going to get it.
- 12:53Speaker 1: They're not the ones that are writing on Twitter. So
- 12:55Speaker 1: pay attention to those that come up. And because you're
- 12:59Speaker 1: being super impacted, full to others out there that are
- 13:02Speaker 1: really listening to your message. And I think people like
- 13:04Speaker 1: you need to hear that more because there is so
- 13:07Speaker 1: much negativity, as you understand, and there are so many narratives,
- 13:11Speaker 1: but nobody has done and sacrifice the things that you
- 13:14Speaker 1: have sacrifice to be able to be an Olympic champion.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And speaking of that, we're going to talk about the Olympics.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Last night, I rewatched your podium and I say that
- 13:32Speaker 1: because I'm coming at you from a mother's perspective. I
- 13:35Speaker 1: have a fifteen year old daughter, and you know I
- 13:38Speaker 1: cried at her first steps, and so seeing your parents
- 13:43Speaker 1: up there, your parents, Gina and Timothy up there cheering
- 13:47Speaker 1: you on, watching you when you first realize they put
- 13:50Speaker 1: the metal around your neck, and seeing your emotions, I
- 13:54Speaker 1: ask all the Olympians this, what was your What was
- 13:57Speaker 1: the first thing in your mind?
- 13:58Speaker 4: Because there's always this.
- 14:00Speaker 1: My daughter always asked me, like, after you win a championship,
- 14:02Speaker 1: you cry, yoh honest. After he won, he cried, why
- 14:05Speaker 1: why do why do why do you cry? And I'm like,
- 14:07Speaker 1: you have to go through it to understand what was
- 14:10Speaker 1: your first emotion? What was your first thought?
- 14:13Speaker 3: My first thought was thinking God, because everything that as
- 14:19Speaker 3: a little girl you dream of, you never understand if
- 14:22Speaker 3: it's gonna ever come true. So it was really thinking God.
- 14:26Speaker 3: And I don't know if you've seen the picture.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Of you know, me holding the metal up to the.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Sky, and it was really just to show to the
- 14:34Speaker 3: people that passed in my life, like, look, you guys
- 14:37Speaker 3: believed in me. Every supporter was supporting me, every fan
- 14:41Speaker 3: was just cheering me on, and that feeling was all
- 14:44Speaker 3: emotions into really thanking God for giving me this opportunity
- 14:48Speaker 3: and this talent and this gift to be able to
- 14:51Speaker 3: show the world who I could be and who I
- 14:54Speaker 3: can't be. And so it was definitely a it was
- 14:58Speaker 3: a heart to heart with who created me and who
- 15:01Speaker 3: gave me this ability to be.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Jordan Chiles, you all were the first podium that was
- 15:06Speaker 1: all black girls. Yep. Did you notice that at the time?
- 15:12Speaker 1: Was that something you had conversations about? And then also
- 15:14Speaker 1: you and Simone showing the ultimate respect. I'm going to
- 15:19Speaker 1: mess with her last name, Rebecca Adraje.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Yeah, oh I did it.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Yeah, showing the ultimate respect.
- 15:28Speaker 4: I mean, take me through that moment.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Well, besides everything that was happening, I knew there was
- 15:36Speaker 3: an opportunity for an all black podium before even going
- 15:39Speaker 3: into event finals, because we all are talented, we all gifted.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Every single person in that event final had the opportunity.
- 15:48Speaker 2: So it was definitely a thought.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Now everything after we as athletes only can control what
- 15:54Speaker 3: we're doing and everything on the outside that's different. So
- 15:58Speaker 3: being on that podium I just felt right. It felt
- 16:01Speaker 3: right in the sense of being able to realize, like, wow,
- 16:06Speaker 3: we did something that's always going to be in history books,
- 16:09Speaker 3: and it's not gonna be the only time. There's gonna
- 16:11Speaker 3: be more times that you're gonna see that, and it's
- 16:13Speaker 3: gonna be an easier thing to recognize rather than, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 3: something that people are kind of, you know, going back
- 16:21Speaker 3: and forth with. So I just was honored to be
- 16:25Speaker 3: able to be in that position. And Rebecca has done
- 16:28Speaker 3: so many things. That's why we bowed to her. I
- 16:30Speaker 3: literally looked at Simoan and was like, we should bow
- 16:32Speaker 3: to Rebecca because she has done amazing within her sport,
- 16:36Speaker 3: amazing within her country, and she is an icon, she's
- 16:39Speaker 3: a legend. Like I was standing up there with two
- 16:41Speaker 3: goats of gymnastics, one for the US and one for Brazil, Like,
- 16:45Speaker 3: that's an honor to be in that position, So why
- 16:48Speaker 3: not give the recognition. I'm a girls girl, So I'm
- 16:51Speaker 3: gonna give somebody their flowers whenever it's needed, I'm gonna
- 16:54Speaker 3: give you your crown. So in that moment, that's what
- 16:57Speaker 3: I felt, and that's what I wanted to do. So
- 16:59Speaker 3: that's why, And that's the most iconic photo.
- 17:02Speaker 2: That iconic I'll always cherish forever. Literally watch it.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Last night, my daughter ke In, like, are you crying?
- 17:08Speaker 4: I was like, no, no, no, it's just there's something
- 17:10Speaker 4: in the air.
- 17:11Speaker 1: It' said, there's some dust iconic moment. Yes, And you
- 17:15Speaker 1: speak about Rebecca and her journey and you know, with
- 17:19Speaker 1: her injuries and acls, and you know, obviously Simone has
- 17:24Speaker 1: battled through adversity as well, but You've battled through a
- 17:27Speaker 1: lot of adversity within even just making the Olympic team,
- 17:32Speaker 1: persevering through heartbreak. I have been on that side of
- 17:35Speaker 1: not making an Olympic team. It sucks. You look at yourself.
- 17:38Speaker 1: You get back in the mirror and you look at
- 17:40Speaker 1: yourself and you're like, am I good enough? Should I
- 17:43Speaker 1: have been on that team? There's all these like should
- 17:45Speaker 1: I have done more?
- 17:46Speaker 4: Could why? Exactly? You know it's political a lot.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Of times, so you know you asked him like, how
- 17:52Speaker 1: come could be political.
- 17:53Speaker 4: In the other way that type of stuff.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Yeah, what did twenty sixteen do to you? Because I'm
- 17:59Speaker 1: a big believer in adversity doesn't just build character, it
- 18:02Speaker 1: reveals it m M. And I feel like it revealed
- 18:05Speaker 1: a lot of character and who you were as not
- 18:07Speaker 1: just an athlete, but as a human.
- 18:10Speaker 2: That time.
- 18:12Speaker 3: I definitely found a lot within myself. I didn't think,
- 18:18Speaker 3: you know, being in a position of trying to figure
- 18:23Speaker 3: out yourself but also being an athlete was gonna be
- 18:25Speaker 3: really hard because you know, you're you're growing, you're going
- 18:28Speaker 3: through life, you're becoming a woman, you're doing all these things,
- 18:31Speaker 3: and it's like adding athlete to that. It's a whole
- 18:34Speaker 3: different mentality. The maturity, the time and respect that you
- 18:40Speaker 3: have to give to your sport.
- 18:42Speaker 2: It just changes everything.
- 18:44Speaker 3: So everything was kind of I want to not so
- 18:47Speaker 3: I don't want to say like a blur, but it
- 18:49Speaker 3: was kind of a blur because I just wanted to
- 18:52Speaker 3: become the person that I felt like I needed to become,
- 18:55Speaker 3: and with step by step and talking to people and
- 18:58Speaker 3: finding encouraging words, just respecting myself a little more, it's
- 19:03Speaker 3: kind of how I started being like, Okay, Jordan, it's okay,
- 19:06Speaker 3: go do that, Go have fun, go, you know, dance
- 19:08Speaker 3: on the slidelines, do all these things and try to
- 19:11Speaker 3: figure out who Jordan Childs is. My parents always told me,
- 19:15Speaker 3: always be the best version of yourself each and every day,
- 19:19Speaker 3: one step above each and every day. Make yourself, you know,
- 19:23Speaker 3: conquer something that you never thought you could have.
- 19:26Speaker 2: So that was my mentality going into the rest of
- 19:30Speaker 2: my life. I mean, I'm twenty three.
- 19:31Speaker 3: I've done so many things that I'm like, how did
- 19:33Speaker 3: I do that? I'm confused, Like where.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Am I at in life? I don't even know, I
- 19:37Speaker 2: you know, just enjoying the journey.
- 19:39Speaker 3: So it definitely was something that I had to figure
- 19:42Speaker 3: out what I'm happy I did.
- 19:44Speaker 1: And then in twenty twenty one you talk about a
- 19:47Speaker 1: unique Olympic experience.
- 19:48Speaker 4: It's right after COVID. It was postponed. I'm sure training
- 19:52Speaker 4: was kind of confusing.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And all of that stuff, just because I can only
- 19:56Speaker 1: imagine with restrictions.
- 19:57Speaker 2: And yeah, I spit in a two every morning.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Exactly like it's not a normal Olympics.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Yeah, but again, you stepped in at a young age
- 20:06Speaker 1: and helped your team accomplish medaling. What was that experience
- 20:13Speaker 1: like being in Tokyo, facing the Olympics for the first
- 20:17Speaker 1: time and navigating that space where you know, things weren't normal.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Yeah, Tokyo was a really I'm I always say my
- 20:27Speaker 3: Tokyo experience was fun only because that was my first Olympics. Now,
- 20:33Speaker 3: everything outside of that I couldn't control because it was COVID,
- 20:37Speaker 3: like having no fans, having to spit in a tube
- 20:39Speaker 3: and you know, us pretending we did our own ceremony
- 20:43Speaker 3: opening ceremony. So there was a lot of things that
- 20:46Speaker 3: you know, Simone had to remind us like, guys, this
- 20:49Speaker 3: isn't how the Olympics are. It's just we're in a
- 20:52Speaker 3: time where it's COVID and we have to deal with
- 20:55Speaker 3: things and you know, protecting people. And so I understood that.
- 20:58Speaker 3: So I let that whole thing just be like, Okay,
- 21:00Speaker 3: I know this isn't the great greatest Olympic experience, but
- 21:04Speaker 3: I'm gonna have fun with it. I was doing tiktoks,
- 21:06Speaker 3: I was braiding people's hair, I was coloring. I was
- 21:09Speaker 3: doing all these things to enjoy my experience. And I
- 21:13Speaker 3: wouldn't change the world for Tokyo because it only gave
- 21:15Speaker 3: me a better understanding of myself. Stepping in for Simone
- 21:21Speaker 3: was the most craziest thing any.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Girl could ever do.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I told her, I never want to step in your
- 21:27Speaker 3: shoes ever again, because I was very terrifying. But I'm
- 21:31Speaker 3: happy I did because that built more confidence in myself
- 21:35Speaker 3: to be like, Okay, Jordan, you were put on this
- 21:38Speaker 3: team for this reason. The consistency is there, everything is there,
- 21:43Speaker 3: so it's time to show who you are.
- 21:46Speaker 2: So I had an amazing time.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Being in Tokyo, and I realized a lot about myself
- 21:52Speaker 3: that at any moment in time, whether it's pressure, whether
- 21:55Speaker 3: it's not, that you are gonna be able to be confident.
- 21:57Speaker 3: And that's what I took away from it. But I
- 21:59Speaker 3: enjoy Tokyo. I had sushi for the first time. I was,
- 22:02Speaker 3: you know, enjoying the memories that I had the ability
- 22:07Speaker 3: to take from it. So it was crazy to know
- 22:10Speaker 3: that we did do it during COVID. But at the
- 22:13Speaker 3: end of the day, I made my first Olympic team
- 22:16Speaker 3: and that was the most amazing moment that I could
- 22:20Speaker 3: really just be happy for.
- 22:23Speaker 4: You mentioned Simone.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Obviously Tokyo was a different experience for her, being a
- 22:30Speaker 1: teammate of hers and watching her go through everything in Tokyo,
- 22:34Speaker 1: and by everything, yes, I mean everything personally, but also
- 22:39Speaker 1: everything on the outside. You talk about Twitter and opinions
- 22:43Speaker 1: and first takes and all of those things. How were
- 22:47Speaker 1: you able to support her in that?
- 22:50Speaker 2: You know, as being.
- 22:53Speaker 3: A teammate but also a best friend, you understand someone
- 22:58Speaker 3: a little differently in the sport but also outside the sport.
- 23:02Speaker 3: So for me supporting her. I just wanted to be
- 23:06Speaker 3: in her corner as much as I could. There would
- 23:08Speaker 3: be times where you know, she would be like, hey,
- 23:10Speaker 3: I'm good, I just want to be by myself. And
- 23:12Speaker 3: I'd be like, okay, that's perfectly fine, but I just
- 23:14Speaker 3: need to know one thing, are you okay?
- 23:17Speaker 2: And she would when she would tell me that, I
- 23:19Speaker 2: would let her be.
- 23:20Speaker 3: I would let her, you know, do what she needed
- 23:22Speaker 3: to do to feel comfortable with herself and you know,
- 23:25Speaker 3: go through her own emotions.
- 23:28Speaker 2: So the best thing that I could do was really.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Just you know, continue to be by her side and
- 23:32Speaker 3: continue to support as much as I can and as
- 23:35Speaker 3: much as she would allow me to.
- 23:36Speaker 2: And you know, being able to see the.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Difference from Tokyo and Paris, I was every moment, every
- 23:44Speaker 3: moment this girl would do something, I would be so joyful,
- 23:48Speaker 3: Like there was times where I would cry, and there
- 23:50Speaker 3: were times where like to see the difference of her
- 23:55Speaker 3: mentality in twenty twenty one compared to Paris, I was
- 24:00Speaker 3: just so relieved to understand that she got to enjoy
- 24:04Speaker 3: her third Olympics the way that she did, no matter
- 24:08Speaker 3: the circumstance, no matter what she did, no matter you know,
- 24:11Speaker 3: her being on the biggest stage. It was more so
- 24:13Speaker 3: of her enjoying that she could do gymnastics and the
- 24:16Speaker 3: way that she wanted to do gymnastics, and for me
- 24:19Speaker 3: to be by her side and see her thrive and
- 24:22Speaker 3: accomplish so many things, like ma'am is the go of gymnastics.
- 24:26Speaker 3: I'm honored to be by her side. So I just
- 24:29Speaker 3: supported her in every situation. Some days I would tell her, look,
- 24:32Speaker 3: let's get off for Twitter, Let's just relax, Let's go
- 24:34Speaker 3: get some.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Food, do whatever we need to do.
- 24:36Speaker 3: And it was just really fun to have a teammate
- 24:40Speaker 3: like her, and I miss her every day.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I think support, support from someone that knows what it's
- 24:49Speaker 1: like to go through what you've gone through, is super
- 24:55Speaker 1: important and I think everyone needs that. You know, where
- 24:59Speaker 1: have you found support throughout this process? Within the case
- 25:04Speaker 1: in which I'm not gonna we're not gonna.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Talk about it. We're gonna I'm not gonna ask you
- 25:08Speaker 4: about it.
- 25:09Speaker 1: I know it's an ongoing court case and everything like that,
- 25:11Speaker 1: and I want to be respectful of that, but I
- 25:13Speaker 1: just want to know how you're doing and the support
- 25:15Speaker 1: that you have around you, because I think that's that's
- 25:19Speaker 1: super important. Like everybody needs that extra person, that plus one,
- 25:22Speaker 1: that person that they can call yell, scream, yeah, do
- 25:25Speaker 1: whatever with And so I just want to check on
- 25:27Speaker 1: you because I think, you know, everybody needs support from
- 25:30Speaker 1: someone in somewhere.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you.
- 25:33Speaker 3: I can tell you six months ago when it first happened,
- 25:36Speaker 3: I was not in the best state of mind. I
- 25:39Speaker 3: you know, really, you know how you were saying earlier
- 25:41Speaker 3: going through that, why why me?
- 25:43Speaker 2: What is this?
- 25:44Speaker 1: Like?
- 25:44Speaker 2: Is it political? What's going on?
- 25:46Speaker 3: Like all those things were going through my head, and
- 25:49Speaker 3: you know, I couldn't truly accept who I was during
- 25:54Speaker 3: that time of being.
- 25:58Speaker 2: In the Olympics. I was like, there's no way.
- 26:02Speaker 3: So now being able to look past that six months ago,
- 26:06Speaker 3: seven months ago, now I can really say, you know what, Jordan,
- 26:11Speaker 3: You're a gold medalist. You came back with a team
- 26:16Speaker 3: gold and whatever happens with the bronze, it's still a
- 26:19Speaker 3: Lebronz in my head, it's still a bronze in my heart.
- 26:22Speaker 3: I still have the medal. If anybody is asking, I
- 26:25Speaker 3: still have it. And I can't really continue on my
- 26:31Speaker 3: life with having something so small but so big in
- 26:38Speaker 3: the world carry in my heart for the rest of
- 26:41Speaker 3: my life. I can't let that happen. So now I'm
- 26:44Speaker 3: enjoying life. I'm at UCLA, I'm doing everything that I can.
- 26:48Speaker 3: I get to, you know, enjoy the support now. Before
- 26:52Speaker 3: I couldn't. People would ask me, oh my gosh, I
- 26:54Speaker 3: love you. You know, we're here for you, We're supporting you.
- 26:56Speaker 3: And for some reason, those words I'm supporting you, I
- 27:00Speaker 3: love you, and I'm here for you felt so harsh
- 27:04Speaker 3: and I didn't understand why until now. Is because I
- 27:08Speaker 3: felt like I didn't deserve those words. I felt like
- 27:11Speaker 3: I didn't deserve the I love you, I'm here supporting
- 27:14Speaker 3: you because I was still trying to figure out what
- 27:18Speaker 3: is going on and why did this happen to me?
- 27:20Speaker 3: But now I love it. Thank you guys all for
- 27:23Speaker 3: the support. Thank you guys for always being there. Thank
- 27:25Speaker 3: you guys for giving me this ability to enjoy my
- 27:27Speaker 3: sport again, enjoy competing again, and enjoy being able to
- 27:31Speaker 3: stand on my own two feet and be proud of
- 27:34Speaker 3: what I've accomplished. Because now I can just let everything go.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I'm letting everybody on the outside do what they need
- 27:40Speaker 3: to do. Yes, I'm going to continue to fight, but
- 27:42Speaker 3: I can only fight for so long, I can only
- 27:44Speaker 3: fight for so so much. I know what my right
- 27:48Speaker 3: is and I know what I've done to create this
- 27:51Speaker 3: amazing ability to be this two time Olympian and Woman
- 27:57Speaker 3: of the Year.
- 28:00Speaker 2: What else I can you know? Put aside?
- 28:04Speaker 1: Well, sometimes as athletes, our gift is our curse. And
- 28:08Speaker 1: I think that mentality of always wanting more and always
- 28:11Speaker 1: wanting to feel like you have, you deserve what you
- 28:14Speaker 1: have and what you work.
- 28:15Speaker 4: For has served you well.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Thank you, right, And I think sometimes it can be
- 28:19Speaker 1: our curse and other things in life, And unfortunately, there
- 28:23Speaker 1: are a lot of people out there that don't.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Want to see people succeed and they want to.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Try to bring hate into whatever we're doing or however
- 28:33Speaker 1: we're doing it, or what we look like or things
- 28:35Speaker 1: like that. And so I'm super proud to just see
- 28:39Speaker 1: that you're standing in this and that you are accepting
- 28:42Speaker 1: your flowers, because it's so hard sometimes for athletes to
- 28:45Speaker 1: accept their roses.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Especially while they can still smell them.
- 28:48Speaker 1: So I'm gonna say I hope that this isn't the
- 28:50Speaker 1: last Olympics selfishly, and I know I've read you.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Said, you know it's not a yes but it's not
- 28:56Speaker 4: a no. Yes, So I just you know, selfishly, selfishly.
- 29:01Speaker 3: I think for twenty eight I will tell people this.
- 29:06Speaker 3: They always say an athlete can mentally go on and
- 29:09Speaker 3: on and on. It's more about the physical part of everything,
- 29:13Speaker 3: and physically, if I'm okay, if I am able, if.
- 29:17Speaker 2: I am you know, never know.
- 29:19Speaker 3: I'm focusing right now on my you know, college and
- 29:21Speaker 3: being at UCLA.
- 29:22Speaker 2: But we'll see what happens.
- 29:25Speaker 3: But like you said, it's not it. It's fifty to
- 29:28Speaker 3: fifty years.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Yes, it's not a no. I'll take it. I will.
- 29:32Speaker 3: It's still in my head, trust me. I think about
- 29:33Speaker 3: it every day.
- 29:35Speaker 1: So well, one thing I know that I love about you.
- 29:39Speaker 1: You're going to do things your way. And I say
- 29:41Speaker 1: that in your nails, you got the tattoos, you got,
- 29:44Speaker 1: the hair, you got, the piercings. You were a grill, yes,
- 29:49Speaker 1: a podium. So you are a fashion icon. I'm going
- 29:53Speaker 1: to declare it. Now, what is more like? What would
- 29:58Speaker 1: you compare your style to how did you you grow
- 30:00Speaker 1: into your style and what would you like to do
- 30:04Speaker 1: with it in the future. Because I feel like this
- 30:05Speaker 1: is a passion of yours.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Oh, I love fashion. Fashion has always been with me
- 30:09Speaker 3: ever since I was little.
- 30:11Speaker 1: You know.
- 30:11Speaker 3: I used to have those little sketch books and with
- 30:14Speaker 3: you know how you can get the stickers and put
- 30:16Speaker 3: the dresses and yeah, I used to.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Have one of those. And I grew up with sneakers.
- 30:20Speaker 3: My mom was a huge sneaker head, so I knew
- 30:22Speaker 3: all about the different Jordans, the different dunks, the different
- 30:25Speaker 3: you know, air forces, all these crazy different sneakers. And
- 30:28Speaker 3: I think being how I see it is it's okay
- 30:31Speaker 3: to be fashionably late. That's how I see it because
- 30:35Speaker 3: in the world of fashion, there's always something that's unique
- 30:38Speaker 3: about your outfit.
- 30:38Speaker 2: And for me, it was always shoes. It was always a.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Nice sunglass, like it was something that I got to
- 30:44Speaker 3: create and be creative with.
- 30:46Speaker 2: My brain is very creative. I have a crazy mind.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Sometimes I just go beyond what I could even imagine.
- 30:53Speaker 3: And that's how I feel with fashion. So a lot
- 30:56Speaker 3: of the time, when you know, you go through the
- 30:58Speaker 3: same I had the knee high socks, trust me, I
- 31:01Speaker 3: had the colorful I went through the phases of fashion
- 31:04Speaker 3: and doing all these crazy things.
- 31:05Speaker 2: You know. I had the off the.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Shoulder, I had, you know, the the stockings, the fishnet.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Trust me, I went all through it.
- 31:12Speaker 3: But then I started to realize that my fashion was
- 31:17Speaker 3: being seen within my sport and that was only because
- 31:21Speaker 3: I would again match my shoes with my leos, I
- 31:24Speaker 3: would do something with my hair, and I just wanted
- 31:27Speaker 3: to embrace that more and hopefully, you know, seeing that
- 31:30Speaker 3: I've been in this world of fashion, whether it was
- 31:33Speaker 3: walking the Kim Chewie Show, whether it was you know,
- 31:36Speaker 3: doing something that was sports illustrated as a swimsuit edition,
- 31:43Speaker 3: whether it was you know, just being on time, being
- 31:47Speaker 3: in fashion week in general, I was happy to have
- 31:49Speaker 3: those moments because now hopefully my fashion can turn into
- 31:53Speaker 3: a Louis Vuitton you can.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Turn to get in your pick into it.
- 31:58Speaker 3: You know, That's what I want to do because I
- 31:59Speaker 3: feel like a lot of people, as gymnasts don't get
- 32:02Speaker 3: to see the fashion side because we're not WNB player,
- 32:06Speaker 3: NBA players who get to have, you know, the walking look,
- 32:10Speaker 3: we're not. So I created that. I created that within gymnastics.
- 32:14Speaker 3: My walking look is having a sneaker match my leo.
- 32:16Speaker 3: My walking look is making sure that my eyes matched
- 32:20Speaker 3: my leo. Those are my walking looks. So I think
- 32:23Speaker 3: it's really cool knowing that my fashion can kind of
- 32:26Speaker 3: be seen in my sport the way that I want to.
- 32:29Speaker 1: And that's amazing because I think women women athletes in
- 32:33Speaker 1: general like what WNBA is doing with the tunnel fit. Yes,
- 32:36Speaker 1: and I think that's an opportunity for.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Anywhere. That's what I'm all for.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Okay, I would be remiss if I did not speak
- 32:45Speaker 1: about UCLA real quick. It really stood out to me
- 32:47Speaker 1: that you tweeted you needed everyone to come to Polly
- 32:52Speaker 1: and watch you all perform and at your meat, and
- 32:57Speaker 1: there was a record crowd that showed up to watch
- 32:59Speaker 1: you all compare. And I just think that within women's sports,
- 33:03Speaker 1: it's so important to have people like yourself that are
- 33:06Speaker 1: advocates for the sport because then when people come, they
- 33:09Speaker 1: come back because they see how cool and special and
- 33:12Speaker 1: amazing of an experience it is. What can you say
- 33:15Speaker 1: about that meat everyone coming to watch and support and
- 33:20Speaker 1: you know, be a part of what UCLA Bruins Gymnastics
- 33:23Speaker 1: is about.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Well, first off, record is crazy. I didn't think to
- 33:29Speaker 3: tell you the truth. I don't really Okay, I really
- 33:32Speaker 3: do pay attention to the crowd, but I don't at
- 33:34Speaker 3: the same time, I can pay attention when it's time
- 33:36Speaker 3: for me to like get the crowd hyph. But then
- 33:38Speaker 3: other than that, I kind of just everything's a blur.
- 33:41Speaker 3: So knowing that we had first we beat a record,
- 33:44Speaker 3: like we're not like an LSU, We're not like an OU,
- 33:47Speaker 3: but yet we are because we have a competitive mind.
- 33:50Speaker 3: We are known to be great and we leave legacies,
- 33:53Speaker 3: and you know that's something that we do. We have
- 33:56Speaker 3: the most amazing floor party for a reason. So the
- 34:00Speaker 3: reason why I put on Twitter, the reason why I
- 34:03Speaker 3: wanted people to come and show out, is because not
- 34:06Speaker 3: only is this entertainment, but it's something that I want
- 34:10Speaker 3: the world to see as in college. It's the same
- 34:14Speaker 3: gymnastics you would see in TMSA, it's the same gymnastics
- 34:18Speaker 3: you would see, you know, a US championship. So I
- 34:21Speaker 3: think it's really cool to know that I was able
- 34:24Speaker 3: to get all those people there to see that we
- 34:27Speaker 3: still have fun and it's still us flipping and we're
- 34:29Speaker 3: doing all these crazy things.
- 34:31Speaker 2: So why not enjoy it. We get to represent UCLA,
- 34:34Speaker 2: one of the number one schools.
- 34:37Speaker 3: In the nation, Like, it's UCLA, so why not come
- 34:41Speaker 3: and have fun?
- 34:42Speaker 2: And so and it was senior night.
- 34:43Speaker 3: I wanted the seniors to feel special and do everything
- 34:47Speaker 3: you know that they could do in front of an
- 34:49Speaker 3: amazing crowd.
- 34:50Speaker 2: And I knew at some point in my career of.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Being at UCLA we were gonna have a record or
- 34:55Speaker 3: at least a sold out PAULI like, I wanted it
- 34:59Speaker 3: to happen at some point, so for it to be
- 35:01Speaker 3: that unique and fun, hopefully more people will come out
- 35:04Speaker 3: and you know, give us the opportunity to show you
- 35:07Speaker 3: like we are as big as any other school and
- 35:10Speaker 3: that we want to continue to shine and inspire.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Well, you're an amazing advocate for that as well as
- 35:17Speaker 1: a role model for other little girls. And so I'm
- 35:19Speaker 1: I'm definitely gonna come out and watch you and bring
- 35:23Speaker 1: my kids out. All right, So before we go, before
- 35:26Speaker 1: we get out of here, we're gonna play a little game.
- 35:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna read you a quote, okay, okay about yourself,
- 35:31Speaker 1: and you've got to tell me who said it, who
- 35:34Speaker 1: said it?
- 35:34Speaker 4: Okay, just hear me out. Oh no, okay.
- 35:38Speaker 1: I can't say enough about the unique person she is
- 35:41Speaker 1: to be able to handle everything on her plate and
- 35:44Speaker 1: handle it with so much excellence. It inspires me every
- 35:47Speaker 1: single day when I wake up tired. I look at
- 35:49Speaker 1: her day before, looked like and I'm like, you know what,
- 35:53Speaker 1: I got this as Simon, she probably would say that,
- 36:01Speaker 1: but it's your head coach, it's yours head coach.
- 36:05Speaker 4: Janelle McDonald. She said that four days ago, so it
- 36:08Speaker 4: was pretty recent. There there you go. But Simone would.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Say that, that's what I was like, Wait, okay.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Simone would say that, but now, oh my.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Gosh, wild coach. Thank you. I appreciate you.
- 36:23Speaker 4: Thank you so much.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I really appreciate you joining the Trophy room.
- 36:27Speaker 4: Continue to be an inspiration.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 36:29Speaker 1: I'm so I'm so happy for you in the space
- 36:32Speaker 1: that you're in and continue to dominate your Jordan here.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
