- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:14It's the 11th of March, and it is so good, So good that you
- 0:20have joined me today because today is one of these
- 0:22crackerjack days where we are going to open up not just a new
- 0:26book of the Bible, but a new gospel of the Bible.
- 0:29Today we are going to read the second gospel as you'll find it
- 0:33in your New Testament. Yes, that's right.
- 0:36We are going to read together the book of Mark.
- 0:39And while Mark might sit second in your list of four gospels, it
- 0:43is actually the OG, the original, the first gospel to be
- 0:47written. In fact.
- 0:48Now, most scholars look at Matthew and Luke, and they see
- 0:52evidence that both of those authors used Mark as a source to
- 0:56help write their gospels. Mark's Gospel is a frenetic
- 1:00journey through the life and teachings of Jesus.
- 1:02It's only 16 chapters long. It's by far the shortest and it
- 1:06moves so quickly and broken completely in half.
- 1:10The 1st 8 chapters whizzed through Jesus miracles and
- 1:15movements and the narrative of his life and then the second
- 1:18half really settles into Jesus teachings.
- 1:23It is a glorious book written by Mark who sat at the feet of
- 1:27Jesus friend Peter and recorded everything that Peter shared and
- 1:31put it together in this gospel. So really this is some people
- 1:35call it the Gospel according to Saint Peter but of course you
- 1:38and I know it as the Gospel according to Mark.
- 1:41So let us dive in and read this brilliant account of Jesus life
- 1:47and teaching as we open up and read together.
- 1:50Mark chapter 1. This is the good news about
- 2:04Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God.
- 2:07It began just as the prophet Isaiah had written.
- 2:10Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will
- 2:14prepare your way. He is a voice shouting in the
- 2:18wilderness. Prepare the way for the Lord's
- 2:20coming. Clear the road for him.
- 2:23This messenger was John the Baptist.
- 2:26He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be
- 2:28baptised to show that they had repented of their sins and
- 2:32turned to God to be forgiven. All of Judea, including all the
- 2:37people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John, and when they
- 2:41confessed their sins, he baptised them in the Jordan
- 2:44River. His clothes were woven from
- 2:47coarse camel hair and he wore a leather belt around his waist.
- 2:51For food he ate locusts and wild honey.
- 2:55John announced Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am.
- 3:00So much greater that I'm not even worthy to stoop down like a
- 3:04slave and untie the straps of his sandals.
- 3:07I baptise you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy
- 3:11Spirit one day. Jesus came from Nazareth in
- 3:16Galilee and John baptised him in the Jordan River.
- 3:19As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens
- 3:23splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descended on him like a
- 3:26dove. And a voice from heaven said,
- 3:29You are my dearly loved son, and you bring me great joy.
- 3:36The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness where
- 3:39he was tempted by Satan. For 40 days he was out among the
- 3:44wild animals and angels took care of him.
- 3:47Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee,
- 3:52where he preached God's good news.
- 3:55The time promised by God has come at last, he announced.
- 3:59The Kingdom of God is near. Repent of your sins and believe
- 4:03the good news. One day as Jesus was walking
- 4:08along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his
- 4:11brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished
- 4:15for a living. Jesus called out to them.
- 4:18Come follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people.
- 4:23And they left their Nets at once and followed him.
- 4:27A little farther up the shore, Jesus saw Zebedee's sons, James
- 4:31and John, in a boat repairing their Nets.
- 4:34He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their
- 4:37father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men.
- 4:42Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum.
- 4:46When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and
- 4:49began to teach. The people were amazed at his
- 4:52teaching, for he taught with real authority, quite unlike the
- 4:57teachers of religious law. Suddenly a man in the synagogue
- 5:00who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out.
- 5:04Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
- 5:07Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One
- 5:12of God. But Jesus reprimanded him.
- 5:15Be quiet. Come out of the man, he ordered.
- 5:19At that the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a
- 5:23convulsion, and then came out of him.
- 5:27Amazement gripped the audience and they began to discuss what
- 5:31had happened. What sort of new teaching is
- 5:34this? They asked excitedly.
- 5:36It has such authority even evil spirits obey his orders.
- 5:42The news about Jesus spread quickly throughout the entire
- 5:45region of Galilee. After Jesus left the synagogue
- 5:49with James and John, they went to Simon and Andrew's home.
- 5:54Now Simon's mother in law was sick in bed with a high fever.
- 5:57They told Jesus about her right away, so he went to her bedside,
- 6:02took her by the hand and helped her sit up.
- 6:05Then the fever left her and she prepared a meal for them.
- 6:10That evening after sunset, many sick and demon possessed people
- 6:14were brought to Jesus. The whole town gathered at the
- 6:17door to watch. So Jesus healed many people who
- 6:22were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons.
- 6:27But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to
- 6:31speak. Before Daybreak the next
- 6:35morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to
- 6:39pray. Later Simon and the others went
- 6:42out to find him. When they found him, they said,
- 6:44everyone's looking for you. But Jesus replied, we must go on
- 6:49to other towns as well, and I will preach to them too.
- 6:52That is why I came. So he travelled throughout the
- 6:56region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out
- 6:59demons. A man with leprosy came and
- 7:03knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed.
- 7:06If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean, he said
- 7:12moved with compassion. Jesus reached out and touched
- 7:16him. I am willing, he said.
- 7:19Be healed. Instantly the leprosy
- 7:23disappeared and the man was healed.
- 7:25Then Jesus sent him on his way with a stern warning.
- 7:29Don't tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and
- 7:33let him examine you. Take along the offering required
- 7:36in the Law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy.
- 7:39This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.
- 7:44The man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone
- 7:47what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon
- 7:51surrounded Jesus and he couldn't publicly enter a town anywhere.
- 7:56He had to stay in the secluded places, but people from
- 8:00everywhere kept coming to him. Oh Jesus, as we read this gospel
- 8:15story, it's just so striking how people are just drawn to you,
- 8:20drawn to you with the the simplicity of your message and
- 8:25the generosity of your love and the immediacy of your compassion
- 8:30and your actions. Lord, you don't sit around idly
- 8:34on the sidelines. You dive into the mess of
- 8:38people's lives. You heal them.
- 8:40You think about the details, like taking the right offering
- 8:43so that they can be publicly declared to be healed and whole
- 8:47again. Oh Jesus, you are so compelling,
- 8:52so full of love and authority. And here you are, hearing our
- 9:00prayers with your heart open, your arms open wide, with love
- 9:06in your eyes, looking to us now. You are incredible, Jesus, our
- 9:12world changing, ever surprising, but ever consistent and loving.
- 9:18God, we love you and we lift you up and we worship you because
- 9:24you alone are worthy of our hearts and our worship.
- 9:29We pray all of this in your saving name, Amen.
