- 0:00DANI: People are being really nice to me on Instagram
- 0:01today for some reason. You know when sometimes
- 0:04people are like really in the comments on Instagram
- 0:06and then sometimes they're not?
- 0:06KARA: Oh are they really
- 0:09in the comments today?
- 0:09DANI: Yeah.
- 0:09KARA: I think everyone's
- 0:12on their phone today because they don't want
- 0:13to work.
- 0:13DANI: Do you own business casual clothing?
- 0:16I guess you do.
- 0:16KARA: Yeah because I go to the office.
- 0:19DANI: I'm getting headshots taken tomorrow as part
- 0:23of a brand event.
- 0:23KARA: Okay.
- 0:23DANI: It's like one of the
- 0:25things they're offering and I have no idea what
- 0:28to wear.
- 0:28KARA: A button-up. Do you have, like, a nice
- 0:30blouse?
- 0:30DANI: I just, like, was thinking about our
- 0:33business casual queens.
- 0:33KARA: Oh, Bay and Daphne?
- 0:33DANI: And
- 0:37I don't know how to emanate that. Because I don't
- 0:40want to look like some LinkedIn fraud. I just
- 0:42want to look like me, but, like, the nicest version.
- 0:45KARA: My office is such a spectrum on that. Because we
- 0:48are the... corporate office so it ranges from
- 0:51people in full business suits but then there's
- 0:54guys in sneakers, jeans, and a hoodie.
- 0:54DANI: My office
- 0:57is really all over the place.
- 0:57DANI: I think the only
- 1:00thing is like I just try not to look sexy, like
- 1:03that's really my only outfit guidance.
- 1:03KARA: That must
- 1:06be so hard for you.
- 1:06DANI: Thank you.
- 1:06KARA: Anyway.
- 1:06DANI: Anyway.
- 1:06KARA: Should
- 1:09we get to the show?
- 1:09DANI: Yeah let's do it.
- 1:09KARA: Okay, cue
- 1:12music. MUSIC. Season 1, episode 16, Las Dos Fridas, or
- 1:30The Two Fridas. Have you seen this piece of artwork?
- 1:33DANI: I looked it up before watching the episode this
- 1:35time.
- 1:35KARA: Well, it's at MOMA.
- 1:35DANI: I don't know that
- 1:38I've seen it in person.
- 1:38KARA: It's beautiful.
- 1:38DANI: I'm gonna
- 1:41be honest, Frida Kahlo doesn't speak to me.
- 1:44KARA: As someone with a disability, she does speak to
- 1:45me.
- 1:45DANI: But my tastes are changing. I also used to
- 1:48really like Monet, and now I really don't.
- 1:48KARA: Same.
- 1:51KARA: Anyways, if you ever end up at MOMA, The Two
- 1:54Fridas is there. So go look at it. This episode
- 1:57came out February 7th, 2012. I like that we're
- 2:00recording right around the time these episodes
- 2:02came out.
- 2:02DANI: It's fun.
- 2:02KARA: I think this is actually
- 2:04the one painting that actually encapsulates the
- 2:07episode.
- 2:07DANI: Yeah, I was really glad I looked it
- 2:10up beforehand because then I was like, wait,
- 2:12this is perfect.
- 2:12KARA: For those of you who don't know
- 2:14the painting, it's a double -cell portrait of
- 2:16Frida Kahlo herself. There's a Frida on the left
- 2:19who's wearing this white European -style Victorian
- 2:22dress. And the Frida on the right is wearing
- 2:25a traditional Mexican dress and they're holding
- 2:27hands. And it's supposed to represent her dual
- 2:29heritage because she was half Mexican and half
- 2:33German. So yeah, Bay's new identity as a part
- 2:38Latina woman really comes into the forefront
- 2:40this episode.
- 2:40DANI: And Daphne's identity as a non
- 2:44-Latina.
- 2:44KARA: Also comes into the forefront.
- 2:44DANI: The amount
- 2:47of times she says, it's Vasquez in this episode,
- 2:51really.
- 2:51KARA: I know.
- 2:51DANI: I feel for her, but also.
- 2:51KARA: Yeah,
- 2:55let's get into it. We started off at the guest
- 2:57house and Regina is on the phone with immigration
- 3:00looking for Angelo. She's on the hunt for Angelo.
- 3:03KARA: No luck.
- 3:03DANI: She basically says they're so disorganized.
- 3:06DANI: He could be deported already. They wouldn't know.
- 3:08DANI: He could be lost in the system. They wouldn't
- 3:11know.
- 3:11KARA: Yeah, so. We don't know anything about
- 3:13Angelo, and we're not going to find out this
- 3:15episode. But Adrianna does say, well, after I
- 3:18called ICE, I warned Angelo, so he may have fled
- 3:21before ICE got to him.
- 3:21DANI: Probably would have been
- 3:24good to say that sooner.
- 3:24KARA: Yesterday.
- 3:24DANI: Yeah, it
- 3:27seems like it's at least the next day.
- 3:27KARA: Yeah,
- 3:30because it sounds like Regina's been on the phone
- 3:32all morning with immigration.
- 3:32DANI: Yeah.
- 3:32KARA: So maybe Adrianna should
- 3:36have said this beforehand. But she's kind of,
- 3:38she's just satisfied he's gone.
- 3:38DANI: Yeah. But his
- 3:41door was kicked in. So I do feel like it was
- 3:44probably...
- 3:44KARA: Forced entry.
- 3:44DANI: Forced entry of some
- 3:47kind.
- 3:47KARA: That is true.
- 3:47DANI: I don't think he kicked in
- 3:49his own door.
- 3:49KARA: Also people who don't care about
- 3:52Angelo being gone are John and Kathryn kind
- 3:54of.
- 3:54DANI: Yeah. They do not care.
- 3:54KARA: Yeah, we're in the
- 3:57kitchen and Bay's arguing with them saying, can
- 3:59you try to help him get him back? And they're
- 4:02like, sorry.
- 4:02DANI: They're not being very supportive.
- 4:05KARA: These are people who have a lot of power and
- 4:07money.
- 4:07DANI: Yeah, they have so much. Like, these are
- 4:10not really things you can compare. But I'm thinking
- 4:14of when Daphne lied and said I lost my hearing
- 4:17aids. The way they were, like, ready to write
- 4:20a blank check. Ready to call whoever. Like, you're
- 4:24telling me that John Kennish doesn't have pull?
- 4:27KARA: Bay said you can't call an immigration lawyer?
- 4:29And they're like, no. Sorry.
- 4:29DANI: They don't have
- 4:31his number?
- 4:31KARA: It's so odd. But they're busy anyway,
- 4:36cleaning out the fridge, because Kathryn's
- 4:38mom is coming tomorrow. Exposition time.
- 4:38DANI: Yeah.
- 4:42KARA: Apparently she is very concerned and frightened
- 4:45by her mother.
- 4:45DANI: Yes, it's the third time she's
- 4:47cleaned out the fridge.
- 4:47KARA: Yeah.
- 4:47DANI: I felt a lot of
- 4:51sympathy for Kathryn this episode, and then
- 4:54also kind of bewilderment. I don't know.
- 4:54KARA: I think
- 4:58KARA: I did too.
- 4:58DANI: Like I would never be stressed in
- 5:01that way personally. And I can't imagine my mom
- 5:05being stressed in that way.
- 5:05KARA: Okay.
- 5:05DANI: She stresses
- 5:09in different ways, but it's never like they're
- 5:12going to judge my fridge.
- 5:12KARA: Okay. So you and I
- 5:18have different grandparents.
- 5:18DANI: Right. That's true.
- 5:21KARA: As I was watching this, I was like, so relatable
- 5:23to have a matriarch of the family that you're
- 5:25slightly afraid of.
- 5:25DANI: I think it's maybe just something
- 5:29I didn't grow up with. I think my parents were
- 5:31very much like...
- 5:31KARA: I think you have a nice grandma
- 5:33or grandmas. I think because my grandmother's
- 5:38an immigrant, I think the immigrant grandma experiences
- 5:41that they're the matriarch of the family because
- 5:44they fled their country to come here.
- 5:44DANI: Yeah.
- 5:44KARA: We're all
- 5:48slightly afraid of them, they're quite stoic
- 5:50and have always been stoic. It's very hard to
- 5:53receive love from them and to learn anything
- 5:55about them.
- 5:55DANI: So are you actually afraid of her?
- 5:58KARA: I'm not afraid of her, but I do expect remarks
- 6:01to happen. Like when they say with Grandma Bonnie,
- 6:05like expect her to say something out of pocket
- 6:07or something inappropriate because that's who
- 6:09she is. That's something I also expect sometimes.
- 6:12DANI: Okay. And does that bother you?
- 6:12KARA: It depends.
- 6:12DANI: Yeah,
- 6:14I guess it depends on what it is she says.
- 6:14KARA: Yeah,
- 6:16I mean, yeah. When I told her I was gay, she
- 6:18cried, you know?
- 6:18DANI: Oh, tears of joy?
- 6:18KARA: No. LAUGHS.
- 6:18DANI: Well.
- 6:24I'm sorry.
- 6:24KARA: It's fine. But I took that personally
- 6:27at the time, I think because I was 20 or 21 when
- 6:30that happened. But now I'm like, here's my wife,
- 6:33whatever.
- 6:33DANI: I guess they're 16. They probably really
- 6:36care.
- 6:36KARA: I think when I was 16, I cared a lot about
- 6:39what my family thought of me and my extended
- 6:42family.
- 6:42DANI: I think because everyone in my family
- 6:46already thought my parents were weird for homeschooling
- 6:49us.
- 6:49KARA: Right.
- 6:49DANI: Like they're already judging us. So
- 6:52you can do whatever the fuck you want. So I think
- 6:54they always raised us like, it actually doesn't
- 6:57matter what they think.
- 6:57KARA: Okay.
- 6:57DANI: It matters what
- 7:00you think. Anyway, I just found it. I was struggling
- 7:02this episode to watch, but I know it is also
- 7:05a cultural thing.
- 7:05KARA: Yeah. Oh, and from this scene,
- 7:09we also learned that Grandma was a silent investor
- 7:13in John's car wash business.
- 7:13DANI: Yes.
- 7:13KARA: Which is going
- 7:15to come up later.
- 7:15DANI: So it's very clear John hates
- 7:18Kathryn's mom.
- 7:18KARA: Yes. Yeah. It is strange why
- 7:21it happened because he made millions from being
- 7:23a baseball player.
- 7:23DANI: Yeah he explicitly says we
- 7:26did not need her money like.
- 7:26KARA: But she wanted to
- 7:28get involved in some way and this is how they
- 7:30could help her get involved.
- 7:30DANI: That is so crazy
- 7:32I would never do that.
- 7:32KARA: Why get your family involved
- 7:35in the business?
- 7:35DANI: That seems like something Kathryn
- 7:37talked John into. And I'm so curious as to how
- 7:39she talked him into it.
- 7:39KARA: Silent invest is funny
- 7:42because she has so many ideas.
- 7:42DANI: Yeah, she has
- 7:44a lot to say.
- 7:44KARA: Yeah. Exterior driveway. Bay comes
- 7:49up to Daphne and says, have you heard anything
- 7:51from Angelo? And Daphne's like, no, girl. And
- 7:54don't expect an answer.
- 7:54DANI: Yeah, but she does say,
- 7:57for the record, I'm not happy that he's gone.
- 8:00KARA: Yeah, she is sympathizing with Bay.
- 8:00DANI: And she says,
- 8:02don't expect an answer, but kind of in a way
- 8:04of like, I sat by the phone as a child waiting
- 8:06for him to come back.
- 8:06KARA: Yes.
- 8:06DANI: And I don't want you
- 8:09to do the same. So things seem good between them.
- 8:12DANI: Also, Daphne looks gorgeous in her blue cardigan.
- 8:15KARA: Yes.
- 8:15DANI: Finally.
- 8:15KARA: The only good outfit here. Some
- 8:17color.
- 8:17DANI: Well, I thought Bay looked cute, but I
- 8:21was confused because she's wearing like a button
- 8:24down blousey situation.
- 8:24KARA: Okay.
- 8:24DANI: And then a jean
- 8:28miniskirt.
- 8:28KARA: You know I didn't even clock that.
- 8:28DANI: And
- 8:31then tights and like high boots. But then her
- 8:34Buckner vest. So I've put notes throughout the
- 8:37episode because we're at Buckner like a fair
- 8:40amount this episode. And every time I'm starting
- 8:43to notice, I don't know if they changed this
- 8:45in the show. I feel like Bay used to rock like
- 8:47a full traditional private school uniform.
- 8:47KARA: And
- 8:51now it's just, like, the hint.
- 8:51DANI: And now it's,
- 8:52like, a piece of clothing with the crest sewn
- 8:56in, and the clothing can be, like, anything.
- 8:58KARA: Anything.
- 8:58DANI: Because Toby also is in, like, a brightly
- 9:01colored checkered button -down and then has,
- 9:05like, a Buckner blazer over that and then
- 9:07jeans, so I'm like what is this just like you
- 9:10have to rep the school and that's the uniform?
- 9:13KARA: Maybe they have an extensive line of Buckner
- 9:16clothing.
- 9:16DANI: Maybe and they all have to purchase
- 9:19multiple things because yeah Simone later also
- 9:21is wearing like a regular t -shirt and then a
- 9:24Buckner hoodie.
- 9:24KARA: Yeah Buckner has so many clothes.
- 9:27DANI: I mean I remember the thrill in college, did you
- 9:31own a lot of merch for your college?
- 9:31KARA: I owned A sweater
- 9:35that I still have and one or two t -shirts.
- 9:35DANI: I
- 9:39remember being like, I will be hitting the student
- 9:41store. I will be getting some merch. I was big
- 9:44on the merch.
- 9:44KARA: Yep, I get it.
- 9:44DANI: Maybe because I
- 9:47didn't, I don't root for any sports teams and
- 9:49I didn't back then. So I was like stoked to have.
- 9:52KARA: It's also that preppy girl look.
- 9:52DANI: Yes, exactly.
- 9:55Totally. Well, I didn't go to as prestigious
- 9:58a college as you, so it was cooler for you to
- 10:00rep it than it was mine.
- 10:00KARA: Okay, you still went
- 10:02to college.
- 10:02DANI: Yeah, I just mean like. It wasn't
- 10:05that New England -y type prep.
- 10:05KARA: That's true. I
- 10:08did not go to Harvard, guys.
- 10:08DANI: But almost.
- 10:08KARA: Not
- 10:11even close. Okay, what else happens? Oh, yeah.
- 10:14Toby comes up in the driveway and he says, Hey,
- 10:17Daphne, I'm going to pick up Grandma from the
- 10:19airport soon. Just a heads up. She might say
- 10:21something stupid about you being deaf. And Daphne's
- 10:24like, that's fine. Story of my life.
- 10:24DANI: I really
- 10:26liked that Toby was looking out.
- 10:26KARA: Yeah.
- 10:26DANI: No one
- 10:29else said anything. And he was very frank about
- 10:31it.
- 10:31KARA: I would love a heads up.
- 10:31DANI: He was just like,
- 10:32she's going to be stupid.
- 10:32KARA: I would love a heads
- 10:34up if someone is going to say something stupid
- 10:36about my hearing aids.
- 10:36DANI: He wasn't delicate about
- 10:38it. I really appreciated that.
- 10:38KARA: Yeah. So thank
- 10:41you, Toby. And then Bay is in her bedroom putting
- 10:43on her lace -up shoes that go all the way up
- 10:46to her knee when in walks Kathryn. And Bay
- 10:50apparently has been chosen to paint a mural at
- 10:52Buckner. But she hasn't shared with Kathryn.
- 10:55KARA: She was planning on telling the family at that
- 10:58dinner with Angelo, but then he got deported.
- 11:01So plans went awry.
- 11:01DANI: So the mural's a bit tainted
- 11:04for her now.
- 11:04KARA: It is. But Grandma Bonnie has arrived.
- 11:08KARA: Hi, Grandma Bonnie. Played by Meredith Baxter,
- 11:11who's in the show Family Ties, which I've never
- 11:13seen. But she's a lesbian in real life.
- 11:13DANI: Oh, shout
- 11:16out.
- 11:16KARA: Yay. Go gays. And she usually calls Bay
- 11:19Cookie as a term of endearment.
- 11:19DANI: This was crazy.
- 11:23KARA: She goes up to Bay and says, hi, Cookie. Or should
- 11:26I say empanada?
- 11:26DANI: Empanada.
- 11:26KARA: Bay's first microaggression,
- 11:31guys.
- 11:31BOTH: Aww.
- 11:31DANI: God.
- 11:31KARA: Crazy.
- 11:31DANI: Yeah. Sets the tone right
- 11:37away.
- 11:37KARA: Immediately. Bay is like, I guess. Okay.
- 11:40But then Daphne comes in the room and Bonnie
- 11:43is immediately smitten. And does not say anything
- 11:46stupid about her hearing aids. She's very nice
- 11:48about it.
- 11:48DANI: She says my friend Lucille has the
- 11:50same ones.
- 11:50KARA: Yeah. And you rock. I love you.
- 11:54Obsessed with you.
- 11:54DANI: I feel bad for Bay, although
- 11:57I feel like Bay is having mixed emotions watching
- 11:59this exchange. But I do feel that with how absentee
- 12:04Adrianna has been in Daphne's life lately, it
- 12:06is quite nice for Daphne to be like, oh, cool.
- 12:10I have like this nice random grandma.
- 12:10KARA: Yeah.
- 12:10DANI: Bonus
- 12:14grandma.
- 12:14KARA: That is true. And she also was lucky
- 12:17that she didn't get to hear the empanada comment.
- 12:19DANI: So true. Yeah, she misses several stupid things
- 12:21that Bonnie says.
- 12:21KARA: Yeah, she's going to miss a
- 12:22lot of microaggressions. It's time to give out
- 12:25gifts. Very grandma thing to do. She gives gifts
- 12:27out to Daphne, Bay, and Toby, and Toby gets a
- 12:30poker set. Oops. I think it's also reflective
- 12:32of Kathryn's relationship with Bonnie because
- 12:35Bonnie did not know that he has an issue. But
- 12:37John basically rips the poker set out of his
- 12:39hand. He's like, no. Bay gets a Latin American
- 12:42art book, which is nice considering that she
- 12:45does like art, but a little on the nose.
- 12:45DANI: Little
- 12:48on the nose. She thinks it's perfect, though.
- 12:50KARA: Yeah, because she is doing the mural. And she
- 12:52was like, great, this is going to be perfect
- 12:53inspiration. By the way, Grandma, I'm doing a
- 12:56mural for the school. And Grandma could not give
- 12:59a flying fuck.
- 12:59DANI: Well, OK, so she hands out presents.
- 13:03And Toby and Bay, she hands out like wrapped
- 13:06presents, which is very sweet. My grandparents
- 13:08weren't really bring presents type of people.
- 13:11KARA: I also lived close to my grandparents.
- 13:11DANI: Yeah anyway
- 13:14they're unwrapping presents. They do it the same
- 13:18way that Paolo's family does it where everyone
- 13:21like unwraps at the same time.
- 13:21KARA: Oh.
- 13:21DANI: Which really
- 13:24throws me off because my family is a.
- 13:24KARA: You do one at a time.
- 13:27DANI: You place it, you all watch the person open the
- 13:30present.
- 13:30KARA: I hate that.
- 13:30DANI: I now that I've experienced
- 13:32it differently also kind of hate that because
- 13:36I don't like all the attention on me and the
- 13:37pressure. But it is, it is also, like, overwhelming.
- 13:41KARA: With the sound of the paper unraveling.
- 13:41DANI: Daphne
- 13:43is clearly a wait and go around the table and
- 13:47everyone open their own presents type of person.
- 13:50KARA: Right.
- 13:50DANI: So she's still waiting with her box.
- 13:50KARA: Yeah,
- 13:53she doesn't get a wrapped gift. She gets a box.
- 13:55DANI: Yeah.
- 13:55KARA: And Bonnie's like, please open. And Daphne
- 13:58opens it, and it's a cameo. Like a little brooch.
- 14:01DANI: Yeah, it's a brooch, yeah.
- 14:01KARA: Yeah. And apparently
- 14:04it's a family heirloom. It belonged to Bonnie's
- 14:07grandmother or great -grandmother, something
- 14:09like that. And we can tell immediately from the
- 14:11body language that this was going to be meant
- 14:14for Bay.
- 14:14DANI: Mm -hmm.
- 14:14KARA: Everyone is uncomfortable.
- 14:16DANI: Yeah.
- 14:16KARA: Not good.
- 14:16DANI: Even Daphne.
- 14:16KARA: This is a poor Bay
- 14:20episode.
- 14:20DANI: It really is.
- 14:20KARA: Yeah. Daphne's like, oh,
- 14:23I just met you two minutes ago. Thank you for
- 14:26this.
- 14:26DANI: Family heirloom.
- 14:26KARA: Yeah. Also, so many remarks
- 14:30on Mexico in this episode when Bay is a quarter
- 14:34Puerto Rican.
- 14:34DANI: I know.
- 14:34KARA: So Bay says, I want to
- 14:38do like a Latin American inspired mural. And
- 14:40then Toby makes a weird racist comment like,
- 14:43you should do the mascot, the bulldog wearing
- 14:45the sombrero.
- 14:45DANI: Yeah.
- 14:45KARA: That's not Puerto Rico, guys.
- 14:48And then later on, when Regina gives Bay a
- 14:52drink and says oh it's Mexican, and Bay's like
- 14:55oh I should have known that. Why would you have
- 14:57to know that?
- 14:57DANI: It's Mexican style and Bay's like probably
- 14:59should have known that but Regina is like well
- 15:01I didn't fucking know that because I'm not Mexican.
- 15:04KARA: Yeah.
- 15:04DANI: Until I was living in a Mexican neighborhood.
- 15:06KARA: Yeah, it's just a lot of references to Mexico
- 15:09specifically.
- 15:09DANI: Do we think that in 2012 they were
- 15:12like these ABC Family viewers do not know the
- 15:15difference so it's not going to matter.
- 15:15KARA: Maybe
- 15:17but I also worry that the writers didn't know
- 15:19the difference.
- 15:19DANI: They probably didn't.
- 15:19KARA: Great. Cool.
- 15:22Okay, well, we're at Buckner now. Toby is working
- 15:25on his solo music. And it sounds like he gave
- 15:28Simone, like, a CD of his tunes. And she's coming
- 15:32back to critique them harshly.
- 15:32DANI: Very harshly.
- 15:35KARA: Yeah, she says, it sounds too much like Guitar
- 15:38Face. This is not new. This is not fresh.
- 15:38DANI: I thought
- 15:41she liked Guitar Face.
- 15:41KARA: This is a complete 180
- 15:43from the last episode. When she was like, I love
- 15:46your band. I've been to every concert.
- 15:46DANI: She said,
- 15:48when you play, you're magic.
- 15:48KARA: Yeah.
- 15:48DANI: Where's that
- 15:51now?
- 15:51KARA: I don't know. Okay, now we're at the Buckner
- 15:54locker room. Did you see what Daphne was wearing?
- 15:57DANI: Something purple.
- 15:57KARA: Yes. So she's wearing, there's
- 16:01a lot of orange and gray on her. The costume
- 16:03department loves to put orange and gray on her.
- 16:05KARA: An orange and gray striped three -quarter sleeve
- 16:07shirt, and then a cropped purple cardigan over
- 16:11that.
- 16:11DANI: Ugh.
- 16:11KARA: And then the sleeves are rolled up
- 16:13on the purple cardigan, so you can see. The orange
- 16:16and gray quarter sleeve is poking out.
- 16:16DANI: And you know
- 16:19she wore that to school at Carlton too. That's
- 16:22not just like her ugly workout outfit.
- 16:22KARA: Someone
- 16:24save her from the orange and gray. An old friend
- 16:26from East Riverside's there. Her name is Monica.
- 16:29And she's coming from East Riverside because
- 16:32the school lets them use the track. White guilt.
- 16:35DANI: Yeah.
- 16:35KARA: It sounds like they used to play basketball
- 16:37as kids from their conversation. And then Simone
- 16:41approaches the two of them chatting. And she's
- 16:43like, guys, my watch is missing. Like, pretty
- 16:46much alerts the entire locker room. My watch
- 16:49is missing.
- 16:49DANI: Yeah.
- 16:49KARA: And looks right at Monica,
- 16:51implying that Monica stole the watch from the
- 16:54locker.
- 16:54DANI: This was so uncomfortable. Like, I hate
- 16:57Simone so much this episode.
- 16:57KARA: Yeah, I wrote in
- 16:59my notes, Simone is being a racist bitch.
- 16:59DANI: Yeah,
- 17:02she picks a fight immediately.
- 17:02KARA: And Monica rightfully
- 17:05is like well, I'm going to fight back. And
- 17:07I wanted so bad for her to just clock her in
- 17:10the nose.
- 17:10DANI: I mean, she gets a pretty good shove
- 17:12in at least.
- 17:12KARA: Yeah, she shoves her against the
- 17:14wall. They're fighting. And Daphne breaks up
- 17:17the altercation just when the Buckner basketball
- 17:21coach walks in.
- 17:21DANI: Is he allowed to be in that locker
- 17:23room?
- 17:23KARA: I was thinking the exact same thing.
- 17:23DANI: He
- 17:26ran in there pretty fast. I don't know.
- 17:26KARA: It's
- 17:28a girl's locker room.
- 17:28DANI: It's a girl's locker room.
- 17:30KARA: If you hear something, tell someone else to go
- 17:32in and check it out.
- 17:32DANI: Also, like, did someone
- 17:34snitch? I don't know. I think Daphne had it handled.
- 17:36She'd gotten them separated.
- 17:36KARA: He thinks she's
- 17:38involved in the fight.
- 17:38DANI: Yes.
- 17:38KARA: Immediately.
- 17:38DANI: Yeah.
- 17:41DANI: He pulls her into the office, too, and is like,
- 17:43I can't believe how racist you're being against
- 17:45the people from East Riverside. It's actually
- 17:47a great neighborhood. And you guys are going
- 17:49to go there this weekend and volunteer so that
- 17:52you can learn that. I understand he won't let
- 17:54Daphne get a word in edgewise.
- 17:54KARA: I just needed her
- 17:57to say. I grew up in -
- 17:57DANI: From there, fuckhead.
- 18:00Also, he's still not playing her. Like, she has
- 18:03so many reasons to fucking go off on this coach.
- 18:06DANI: You wouldn't take this one?
- 18:06KARA: Yeah, this one's
- 18:08- this was crazy. Also, Simone was pissing me
- 18:11off so much because she's sitting in the office
- 18:12like, I did nothing wrong. All I did was just
- 18:14accuse them of stealing.
- 18:14DANI: Yeah, she said, I didn't
- 18:16say she took my watch. I said, it's missing and
- 18:20it has never been missing before today when she
- 18:23got there. Like, it's so like, well, nothing's
- 18:25ever been missing from my locker before.
- 18:25KARA: Oh,
- 18:28and he calls her, he calls her Kennish, but she
- 18:30corrects him and says Vasquez.
- 18:30DANI: It's Vasquez.
- 18:32KARA: It's Vasquez.
- 18:32DANI: I think that she's right here.
- 18:36It's just I remember some of the shit that Daphne
- 18:38pulls later.
- 18:38KARA: I know what she's going to do later.
- 18:41DANI: Which colors the way I view the way she's
- 18:44behaving in this episode.
- 18:44KARA: Okay. I think at this
- 18:47point, though, this is fine.
- 18:47DANI: Yes, I think that
- 18:50this is fine, too. Yeah, that's her name. That's
- 18:52the name she was raised with.
- 18:52KARA: I also feel like
- 18:54wouldn't everyone know that she was switched?
- 18:57And that she came from East Riverside?
- 18:57DANI: Well,
- 18:59so she says something later and Simone says,
- 19:01oh yeah, I read that article. I just thought
- 19:03it said you came from Brookside or something.
- 19:05KARA: Yeah, that's true.
- 19:05DANI: And also Simone seems like
- 19:07very shaken about the fact that Daphne's from
- 19:10East Riverside. Like Simone is truly like an
- 19:12evil racist bitch.
- 19:12KARA: I know.
- 19:12DANI: Because she's like,
- 19:15yeah, I fucking hate it here. This place is terrible.
- 19:18Aren't you glad you live in Mission Hills with
- 19:19like classy people now?
- 19:19KARA: Absolutely insane. But
- 19:22before we do the community service, Kathryn,
- 19:25Bay, and Bonnie go to the guest house. I guess
- 19:28without warning? But they go to meet Regina and
- 19:31Adrianna.
- 19:31DANI: Yeah, maybe send a text.
- 19:31KARA: Like, hey,
- 19:33we're coming over. No, none of that. But anyways,
- 19:36Bonnie greets Adrianna in like the one word in
- 19:39Spanish that she knows.
- 19:39DANI: And then pulls it back
- 19:42to say, that's the only Spanish I know.
- 19:42KARA: And Adrianna's
- 19:45like, good news is I speak English.
- 19:45DANI: Yeah.
- 19:45KARA: And
- 19:48then Kathryn is really trying to get Bonnie
- 19:50to engage with Bay a little bit more. She's pointing
- 19:52out Regina's art and saying, look, this is where
- 19:54Bay's talent came from. Isn't this cool?
- 19:54DANI: Right.
- 19:57Yeah. I would hope you'd be curious to meet the
- 20:01biological mother of your grandchild.
- 20:01KARA: Well then
- 20:04Bonnie's like well what about her father? What
- 20:07did she get from her father? And then the room
- 20:09goes silent. It's too soon. He just got deported
- 20:12yesterday. We can't do this.
- 20:12DANI: Kind of crazy that
- 20:14Bonnie like doesn't know that. You know what I
- 20:16mean? Like, she has no knowledge of Angelo. You
- 20:18know Kathryn hasn't mentioned it to her.
- 20:18KARA: No.
- 20:20And then Kathryn's like, anyway, let's diffuse
- 20:22this situation. And she shows Bonnie baby pictures
- 20:25of Daphne. And this time it's real baby pictures
- 20:28of Daphne instead of a model.
- 20:28DANI: Those were very
- 20:30cute.
- 20:30KARA: And Bonnie agrees. She's like, this is
- 20:33awesome. I want copies and copies of this. And
- 20:36also I want pictures of her from her first baptism
- 20:39and communion. Because I assume you guys are
- 20:41Catholic. Because all Latinos are Catholic, I
- 20:43guess.
- 20:43DANI: I think I don't have enough religious
- 20:46knowledge. I assumed it was racist, but I didn't
- 20:48really know why.
- 20:48KARA: It's racist.
- 20:48DANI: Yeah.
- 20:48KARA: It is quite
- 20:50racist.
- 20:50DANI: I was just like, oh, I don't know.
- 20:50KARA: And
- 20:52we also know from the second episode.
- 20:52DANI: What are
- 20:55the Kennishes? Not Catholic? What are they?
- 20:55KARA: Remember
- 20:57they prayed over dinner once?
- 20:57DANI: Yeah.
- 20:57KARA: I think they're
- 21:01Christian of some sort.
- 21:01DANI: Well, aren't Catholics
- 21:03Christian?
- 21:03KARA: Yes, but it's a different kind of
- 21:06Christianity.
- 21:06DANI: Yeah, but if you say they're Christian.
- 21:09That's like a blanket statement. They could be
- 21:10Catholic.
- 21:10KARA: That's true.
- 21:10DANI: I feel like John and Kathryn
- 21:13Kennish could be Catholic.
- 21:13KARA: I could see that for
- 21:15them.
- 21:15DANI: What's like the more, like, what would
- 21:18they be? What's the more like country club, white
- 21:20ass Christianity?
- 21:20KARA: Protestant.
- 21:20DANI: Oh, okay.
- 21:20KARA: Yeah.
- 21:20DANI: I don't know.
- 21:24KARA: I just assumed they were like Protestant Christians
- 21:27that go to church only on the holidays or something.
- 21:29DANI: Right. And then what does Adrianna says like,
- 21:32I am Catholic. Regina's reformed.
- 21:32KARA: Recovering.
- 21:36Because remember in the second episode, they
- 21:38all pray over dinner and Regina's like, I don't
- 21:41pray to God for salmon and asparagus.
- 21:41DANI: Yeah.
- 21:41KARA: So
- 21:43we know that she's not religious. So. Okay, next
- 21:47scene, Bay is in her art studio and she's looking
- 21:50at the Latin American art book that Bonnie got
- 21:53her. And she turns to the Two Fridas artwork page.
- 21:56DANI: Yeah, that was crazy. I think this is the first
- 21:58time we've seen the painting behind the episode
- 22:02title in the episode.
- 22:02KARA: I know. I was like, this
- 22:05is awesome. It's like when you watch a movie
- 22:06and they say the title of the movie in the movie.
- 22:08DANI: Love that moment.
- 22:08KARA: I'm like, oh my god, there
- 22:10it is. That's awesome. But then she's distracted
- 22:12by Toby's jamming. And she goes in to tell him
- 22:16to shut up, basically. And then he makes the
- 22:18racist sombrero joke again. And she goes, so
- 22:22it's not funny the second time.
- 22:22DANI: And Toby said,
- 22:24well, dad laughed. And she said, exactly.
- 22:24KARA: And
- 22:27then he is heeding Simone's advice about going
- 22:31solo and Bay gives him a little warning that
- 22:34Simone has the tendency to mold people in what
- 22:37she wants them to be so. See what happens with
- 22:40that.
- 22:40DANI: Toby's a little defensive about it.
- 22:40KARA: Yeah.
- 22:43But he listens. Yeah he takes it.
- 22:43DANI: He takes it. He
- 22:46takes it under consideration.
- 22:46KARA: Now we're at the car
- 22:49wash and Bonnie's offering unsolicited car wash
- 22:52ideas. I did like her recycled water idea.
- 22:52DANI: I
- 22:55liked it too, but then I thought it was so funny
- 22:58that she was like, obviously I don't care about
- 22:59recycling water, but we can get some of these
- 23:02green heads.
- 23:02KARA: These liberals.
- 23:02DANI: Yeah, these liberals
- 23:05will love the idea of it.
- 23:05KARA: How would you recycle
- 23:08water? A lot of the water just goes on the ground,
- 23:10on the pavement.
- 23:10DANI: Maybe like sourcing, sourcing
- 23:14the water that they use to begin with from secondary
- 23:18recycling sources.
- 23:18KARA: Oh nice.
- 23:18DANI: Like I don't know that
- 23:21they themselves are recycling the water but the
- 23:24water they're getting maybe is from?
- 23:24KARA: It doesn't
- 23:26matter because John does not care about her advice.
- 23:28DANI: No he's not interested in her advice or her cruise
- 23:32friend who did the mock -ups.
- 23:32KARA: For the billboard
- 23:34campaign. He said great thank you okay. Now it's
- 23:38community service time.
- 23:38DANI: Yes.
- 23:38KARA: Simone and Daphne
- 23:41are in East Riverside doing the community service.
- 23:43They're painting over some graffiti.
- 23:43DANI: Yeah, I
- 23:46know that the show was just like, make them look
- 23:48like they're doing stuff. But why are these Buckner
- 23:53kids? They're in like a gravel lot next to a
- 23:56house and they are planting flowers.
- 23:56KARA: They're
- 24:00planting flowers. They were cleaning up trash.
- 24:03DANI: Right. The trash is gone. Like, that's what they
- 24:05did is they cleaned up the trash. Fine, I guess.
- 24:07Whatever. They're planting flowers, like, in
- 24:09the middle of the gravel lot.
- 24:09KARA: It looks like it's
- 24:12supposed to be a community garden.
- 24:12DANI: Right. But
- 24:14it looks like initially that was maybe a parking
- 24:16lot.
- 24:16KARA: Yes.
- 24:16DANI: Who has asked them to do this? Who
- 24:19was like, you know what we should have?
- 24:19KARA: They
- 24:22said it's a school project and the coach just
- 24:24invited them to go along as their punishment.
- 24:27DANI: Yeah.
- 24:27KARA: I don't know what kind of school project
- 24:29this was. Maybe this was like an environmental
- 24:31sciences school project where you have to go
- 24:33plant things.
- 24:33DANI: It just, I mean, unsurprising for
- 24:36a private school to go into a underprivileged
- 24:40community and do a project that would not actually
- 24:42be helpful. But it doesn't seem like it's that
- 24:45helpful.
- 24:45KARA: No.
- 24:45DANI: But yeah, Daphne and Simone are
- 24:49painting over graffiti on the side of the house.
- 24:53KARA: Yeah. And then this is when Daphne mentions to
- 24:55Simone, like, I grew up here. That's why I know
- 24:57all the shortcuts and where to go.
- 24:57DANI: Kind of weird
- 25:00that Daphne hasn't mentioned it before now.
- 25:00KARA: Again,
- 25:03she loses all semblance of her East Riverside
- 25:06life the second she moves to Mission Hills.
- 25:06DANI: Yeah.
- 25:09KARA: So, yeah. Why would she?
- 25:09DANI: Hey, the name's Vasquez.
- 25:12KARA: Monica and her little posse come up. And they
- 25:15come say hi, sort of. I think they're just like...
- 25:18DANI: It seemed like Monica almost had good intentions
- 25:21to say hi to Daphne. And then she saw that Simone
- 25:24was there.
- 25:24KARA: And then she saw Simone was there
- 25:25and she was like, oh, this bitch again.
- 25:25DANI: Yeah.
- 25:27KARA: And then Simone is not helping because she says,
- 25:29I want my watch back if you haven't pawned it
- 25:32already.
- 25:32DANI: Jesus Christ.
- 25:32KARA: And again, this would
- 25:36have been a great place for Monica to bury Simone
- 25:38alive into one of those flower beds. But then
- 25:40Daphne's like, okay, Simone. Go away. And then
- 25:44she tries to rebond with Monica a little bit,
- 25:47but Monica is not having it, which was interesting.
- 25:50KARA: I don't think Monica was being very nice here.
- 25:52She should know Daphne's character if they grew
- 25:55up together.
- 25:55DANI: It's unclear to me how much of a
- 25:57relationship they really had.
- 25:57KARA: It just seems like
- 26:00they lived in the same neighborhood and knew
- 26:03each other a little bit, but they didn't go to
- 26:04the same school because Daphne always went to
- 26:06Carlton.
- 26:06DANI: Well, not always. The dark years.
- 26:06KARA: Tea.
- 26:11KARA: But yeah, we really don't know their relationship
- 26:14and they never express that but she is making
- 26:18the assumption basically that Daphne has changed
- 26:20and is judging her and that her whole defense
- 26:23is that just because she is from East Riverside,
- 26:25people are going to be making assumptions about
- 26:27her and her life but she's doing the same thing
- 26:29to Daphne now.
- 26:29DANI: She is but I don't know that they're
- 26:32completely wrong.
- 26:32KARA: But she's not wrong. But she
- 26:35doesn't know that yet.
- 26:35DANI: That's true.
- 26:35KARA: Daphne hasn't
- 26:38done anything except break up a fight and say
- 26:41hi to Monica.
- 26:41DANI: And also not come back to East
- 26:44Riverside a single time since moving.
- 26:44KARA: She doesn't
- 26:46have any family there anymore.
- 26:46DANI: I guess that's
- 26:48also true.
- 26:48KARA: Yeah. Adrianna and Regina are living
- 26:51with her. And Emmett, I guess, doesn't live in
- 26:53East Riverside.
- 26:53DANI: No. But if they were already,
- 26:55if they were friends, like, didn't Daphne have
- 26:57other friends?
- 26:57KARA: Apparently not.
- 26:57DANI: Okay.
- 26:57KARA: Yeah. No
- 27:01one from Carlton lives in East Riverside, I guess.
- 27:03Yeah. But this girl Monica says, like, you're
- 27:06a Mission Hills girl now. And you never looked
- 27:08like any Vasquez I knew.
- 27:08DANI: Damn. That was a good
- 27:11line.
- 27:11KARA: That was a good line. Now we are back at
- 27:14the Kennish house and Bonnie's being a grandma
- 27:15because she's organizing her pills.
- 27:15DANI: Oh.
- 27:15KARA: Which
- 27:18I really liked. Nice touch.
- 27:18DANI: Everything about
- 27:21her was overshadowed by all the crazy shit she's
- 27:24about to say.
- 27:24KARA: So Kathryn's like, hey mom, so
- 27:28why'd you give the cameo to Daphne?
- 27:28DANI: Can I say
- 27:31one thing? I do think that Bay would never wear
- 27:34it, respectfully.
- 27:34KARA: I think she would.
- 27:34DANI: You think
- 27:37it's her style?
- 27:37KARA: She can turn it into a necklace
- 27:39or something cool.
- 27:39DANI: I guess so. Okay. Like, I
- 27:42still think it should go to her out of principle.
- 27:45KARA: I don't think Daphne would wear it. I think Bay's
- 27:48more likely to wear it than Daphne.
- 27:48DANI: You know
- 27:50what? Maybe you're right.
- 27:50KARA: Thank you.
- 27:50DANI: Okay.
- 27:50KARA: So
- 27:52she says to Bonnie, why'd you give Daphne the
- 27:55cameo and not Bay? And Bonnie goes into this
- 27:58spiel about, well, it's for family. And family
- 28:02is basically who you are related to by blood.
- 28:05So therefore, the cameo should go to Daphne.
- 28:08And biology tells us who we are. She goes even
- 28:12deeper. And she's like, Daphne is so much better
- 28:16at math. It just makes more sense for her to
- 28:18be part of the family. And Bay is different.
- 28:20And don't you see her as different now? Because
- 28:22you found out she's not blood related to you.
- 28:25And then she confesses that, like, now that she
- 28:28knows Bay is not biologically related to her,
- 28:30she sees her as someone different. And poor
- 28:32Bay is hearing this whole conversation. Kathryn,
- 28:35thank God, is defending her.
- 28:35DANI: Yeah.
- 28:35KARA: She is standing
- 28:39up to her mom. She's like, no. And I think the
- 28:42whole theme of this episode is that family is
- 28:45not just who you're biologically related to.
- 28:47DANI: No, and also your DNA does not determine who
- 28:50you are.
- 28:50KARA: Yeah, Bonnie's giving a little eugenics.
- 28:53KARA: It was crazy.
- 28:53DANI: Yeah, like...
- 28:53KARA: She was giving like
- 28:56all these weird racist references too. Like the
- 28:59family that adopted a Korean kid.
- 28:59DANI: Yeah. And she's
- 29:03like, and he was a merit scholar. They don't
- 29:05even know what a merit scholar is.
- 29:05KARA: Implying that
- 29:08all Korean kids are just inherently good at math.
- 29:11DANI: Yeah.
- 29:11KARA: It was so odd. And Kathryn is like beside
- 29:14herself. She's so confused and so upset.
- 29:14DANI: I think
- 29:18that she does say like, I didn't see Bay differently
- 29:20in the slightest. And I understand what she's
- 29:24saying. But I think it's okay for her to be like,
- 29:26well, now I see more of Bay. It's not different.
- 29:29DANI: It's more. Now I can understand. It's true. She's
- 29:33artistically talented, and she didn't fucking
- 29:35get that from us. There's more answers to her
- 29:39roots, but that should be an expansive thing.
- 29:42DANI: It shouldn't be like, we'll take her out of this
- 29:43box.
- 29:43KARA: Yeah, so we're going to pick her up and
- 29:45put her somewhere else.
- 29:45DANI: Yeah, I think this was
- 29:47a good episode for 2012. Maybe not ahead of its
- 29:51time, but definitely pushing forward for ABC
- 29:54Family.
- 29:54KARA: Yeah. Well, apparently when Bonnie comes
- 29:57to Mission Hills, they do this tradition where
- 30:00they dress in really stupid clothes and go for
- 30:02tea.
- 30:02DANI: I like Daphne's dress.
- 30:02KARA: Did you like the
- 30:04hat?
- 30:04DANI: No, I fucking hated the hat. Also, then
- 30:07Bay later at tea is wearing a hat that I like.
- 30:11I think it's cute. But it would go with Daphne's
- 30:14dress way better.
- 30:14KARA: Yeah, she's wearing a bright
- 30:17red hat.
- 30:17DANI: Yeah, I think it's cute. I like the
- 30:19hat. I don't like it for... Like none of them
- 30:22are wearing the right hats for a tea like that.
- 30:25KARA: They look like they're going to the Kentucky
- 30:26Derby.
- 30:26DANI: But the thing is, is that they don't because
- 30:29those hats would be more acceptable. They're
- 30:31wearing like a hat you walk around in the cold
- 30:34winter in. They're wearing like cozy protect
- 30:37my hair hats, like wool hats. Yeah.
- 30:37KARA: Yeah.
- 30:37DANI: Like
- 30:411950s walking around in New York hats, not like,
- 30:45garden party hats, which I think is what they're
- 30:47going for.
- 30:47KARA: The costume department really messed
- 30:50up.
- 30:50DANI: But also, they're the only ones. They do
- 30:53not have to be doing this. They're the only ones
- 30:55at tea that dress up. If you're going to do it,
- 30:57at least go for it.
- 30:57KARA: And do it right.
- 30:57DANI: Do it right.
- 31:00KARA: Well, Kathryn and Daphne are dressing up for
- 31:02tea. They're wearing very nice dresses. They're
- 31:04putting on the silly hats.
- 31:04DANI: Yeah, I like Daphne
- 31:06in red. I thought she looked nice.
- 31:06KARA: Daphne does
- 31:08look nice in red. Not orange. No. Red. And Daphne's
- 31:12wearing the cameo as a necklace. It's cute.
- 31:12DANI: You're
- 31:14right. I see it. It would look better on Bay.
- 31:16KARA: Yeah. Thank you. And then Daphne's like, where's
- 31:18Bay? And Kathryn goes, shit, where is Bay?
- 31:21KARA: And understandably, Bay's like, I'm not going
- 31:24in this thing. I'm going to work on my mural
- 31:25at Buckner.
- 31:25DANI: Yeah.
- 31:25KARA: She's at the school, covered
- 31:28in paint, painting away. And Kathryn comes
- 31:31storming in in her dress and high heels. And
- 31:33is like, get your ass up.
- 31:33DANI: Yeah, she's being so
- 31:36mean.
- 31:36KARA: Yells at her. This is the first time she
- 31:39raises her voice at her.
- 31:39DANI: I think it's just the
- 31:42stress of her mom being there. But like, Kathryn,
- 31:44don't let your evil bitch mom make you evil.
- 31:47KARA: I know. So yeah, Bay is now at this tea thing
- 31:51against her will. Let's just go to tea time.
- 31:53DANI: Let's just go to tea time.
- 31:53KARA: The four of them are
- 31:55sitting down and Bonnie decides to remark on
- 31:57how brave Daphne is for growing up in East Riverside
- 32:00and that -
- 32:00DANI: She won't let it go.
- 32:00KARA: Won't let it
- 32:03go. In that dangerous environment. And Bay calls
- 32:06it out immediately. She's like, oh, is it because
- 32:09that environment was filled with non -white people
- 32:11like me?
- 32:11DANI: Good for her.
- 32:11KARA: I know. And then immediately
- 32:13storms out.
- 32:13DANI: I feel, Bay, that you could have
- 32:16saved yourself a lot of time by just telling
- 32:17Kathryn that you heard what your grandma said.
- 32:20DANI: Like, when she stormed in at Buckner, you could
- 32:22have just said - No, I'm not going because I
- 32:25heard that grandma's fucking racist and a shithead.
- 32:27KARA: Yeah.
- 32:27DANI: And you can tell her that. And I feel like
- 32:31Kathryn would have been like, okay.
- 32:31KARA: I agree.
- 32:33But instead, Bay storms out of the tea thing
- 32:36and then tells Kathryn she heard about the
- 32:38conversation.
- 32:38DANI: And then takes a cab back to Buckner.
- 32:41KARA: Yeah.
- 32:41DANI: To finish her art. Anyway, back at the
- 32:45guest house, Regina is on the phone. She's selling
- 32:49all of the stuff for the salon.
- 32:49KARA: Yeah, the salon
- 32:52is officially gone.
- 32:52DANI: Dude, let's talk about this
- 32:54first.
- 32:54KARA: I'm so confused.
- 32:54DANI: She couldn't. She wasn't
- 32:57allowed to get out of the lease when she called
- 32:59about it. They already bought all the stuff for
- 33:02the salon. Angelo already gave her all that money.
- 33:05KARA: Yes.
- 33:05DANI: I feel like the logical thing to do here
- 33:07is just to continue on, especially after Angelo
- 33:10was like, I don't want you to stop doing the
- 33:13salon.
- 33:13KARA: Because of me.
- 33:13DANI: Because of me. The thing
- 33:16to do would be to carry on and do the salon.
- 33:19You already have everything you need. Angelo
- 33:20got you all the stuff you need.
- 33:20KARA: But instead,
- 33:23she calls the equipment vendors and sells everything.
- 33:26DANI: At a loss.
- 33:26KARA: At a loss.
- 33:26DANI: So she's not even getting
- 33:29all that money back.
- 33:29KARA: And what's going to happen
- 33:31with the space? Did she get out of the lease?
- 33:31DANI: Right?
- 33:34DANI: Like, I'm pretty sure no. So now she's just going
- 33:37to have an empty storefront. She's not being
- 33:39logical here. I know that's the point. But it's
- 33:41making me so mad.
- 33:41KARA: It's insane. And then Adrianna's
- 33:45like, well, I was just trying to help.
- 33:45DANI: I was
- 33:47just trying to help.
- 33:47KARA: Yeah. Basically, Regina's
- 33:50like, I lost the salon and it's all your fault.
- 33:52And Adrianna's like, so it wasn't my fault and
- 33:54I was trying to help. All right.
- 33:54DANI: I think she
- 33:57maybe could have not called immigration.
- 33:57KARA: Yeah.
- 33:59KARA: I think my hot take is don't call ICE. Okay.
- 34:02Bay is back at Buckner now after the tea time
- 34:05fight and she's working on the mural and then decides
- 34:08to throw white paint over it.
- 34:08DANI: She's like, she's
- 34:11angry. She's like, this isn't good enough, whatever.
- 34:15Throws white paint all over it. Can I say? I
- 34:18thought it was ugly.
- 34:18KARA: You thought the mural was
- 34:20ugly?
- 34:20DANI: The mural was pretty ugly. I think that
- 34:22throwing the white paint over it was a good call.
- 34:25KARA: I think it looked fun with the white paint over
- 34:27it. Very Pollock -esque.
- 34:27DANI: Yeah, it was an improvement
- 34:31for sure.
- 34:31KARA: There was one point where I was like,
- 34:32stop, it looks good.
- 34:32DANI: Yeah, leave it there. Yeah,
- 34:35didn't love it.
- 34:35KARA: Yeah. That's okay. She'll fix
- 34:39it up later.
- 34:39DANI: But it is a great scene of her angrily
- 34:41throwing the paint.
- 34:41KARA: Yeah, I was proud of her.
- 34:43KARA: Toby is performing his new music that he wrote,
- 34:47performing it for Simone.
- 34:47DANI: Yeah, wellness check.
- 34:49Were you okay watching this after being like,
- 34:51I was cringed out the last episode? Because this
- 34:53cringed me out.
- 34:53KARA: I think this was better because
- 34:56he was singing to Simone instead of alone outside.
- 35:00DANI: No, I thought it was so much worse. I feel like
- 35:02it's so awkward when it just pans to just her
- 35:04sitting.
- 35:04KARA: And, like, grinning.
- 35:04DANI: Oh, yeah.
- 35:04KARA: Anyway,
- 35:09she's thrilled. She loves whatever this song
- 35:11is.
- 35:11DANI: I didn't think it was that good.
- 35:11KARA: Yeah, it
- 35:14has some lyric about, put your hand in my winter
- 35:16coat to keep warm. I don't know. But she's like,
- 35:20amazing, love you. And then she's like, by the
- 35:22way, got you a gig at this fashion event. But
- 35:26we need to work on your look.
- 35:26DANI: She's like, I'm
- 35:28going to take you shopping. And he's like, okay,
- 35:30let's stop there.
- 35:30KARA: Pause, I don't want to shop.
- 35:32And he goes. I feel like you're trying to mold
- 35:35me into something that you want me to be. Basically
- 35:38parroting Bay's words. And Simone catches on
- 35:41immediately and goes, wow, that sounds really
- 35:43familiar. It sounds like something Bay told me
- 35:46when we had our friend breakup. And she storms
- 35:48out.
- 35:48DANI: When do we find out what the heck happened
- 35:50with Bay and Simone?
- 35:50KARA: I have no idea. Next episode,
- 35:53I hope.
- 35:53DANI: I hope so. Because I can't remember.
- 35:56KARA: Me neither. I don't remember the friend breakup.
- 35:58DANI: I really want to know.
- 35:58KARA: Me neither.
- 35:58DANI: Obviously,
- 36:00Bay was in the right because Simone is an evil
- 36:03crazy person.
- 36:03KARA: And racist.
- 36:03DANI: And yeah.
- 36:03KARA: And dines and
- 36:07dashes.
- 36:07DANI: And dines and dashes and makes fun of
- 36:10people with colostomy bags. So.
- 36:10KARA: Canceled.
- 36:10DANI: Hate her.
- 36:14DANI: I'm sad for Toby that he likes her.
- 36:14KARA: I know he
- 36:16doesn't know any of these things though which
- 36:18is so unfortunate.
- 36:18DANI: I, I guess I'm not an older
- 36:21brother so I wouldn't know but I do feel that
- 36:23if I was like, hey to my older brother, like don't
- 36:26date this girl because I guess Bay doesn't tell
- 36:29him not to date her but like. I also don't think
- 36:31they know.
- 36:31KARA: I don't think they know yet.
- 36:31DANI: That he's
- 36:34dating her? He says to Bay, I'm dating her. That's
- 36:37when she's like, just be careful.
- 36:37KARA: Oh, you're
- 36:39right. You're right.
- 36:39DANI: But I feel like, imagine
- 36:42I'm single and I start dating BLEEP. You know what
- 36:46I mean? And you'd be like, hey, that's like kind
- 36:49of like, I know those are different relationships,
- 36:51but that's kind of weird.
- 36:51KARA: Yeah.
- 36:51DANI: I feel like I
- 36:54would never do that.
- 36:54KARA: Yeah, you're right. So.
- 36:57KARA: Toby, you couldn't get any other girl?
- 36:57DANI: I know,
- 36:59he's a cutie.
- 36:59KARA: He is.
- 36:59DANI: Maybe in Wilke's shadow.
- 37:03Maybe he doesn't, well, I was going to say he
- 37:05doesn't want Wilke's leftovers, but Simone did
- 37:07date Wilke.
- 37:07KARA: Yeah.
- 37:07DANI: Yeah, maybe he's just having
- 37:09a hard time shining.
- 37:09KARA: Maybe.
- 37:09DANI: He deserves more.
- 37:13KARA: Now we're in East Riverside and Monica and some
- 37:15of the other locals are playing some pickup basketball.
- 37:18DANI: Wait, we should call out the fact that Simone
- 37:20breaks up with him.
- 37:20KARA: Does she break up with him?
- 37:22DANI: Yes.
- 37:22KARA: Oh, she goes, we're done. That's right.
- 37:24DANI: She says, he's like, I don't want you to like
- 37:28be in charge of my career. And she says, well,
- 37:30I think you're going to have to find someone
- 37:32to be your new manager and your new girlfriend
- 37:35then because I quit.
- 37:35KARA: Oh, I didn't hear that line.
- 37:37DANI: Yeah. And she, she storms out.
- 37:37KARA: So much storming
- 37:41out in the show.
- 37:41DANI: Yeah, it's a really stormy episode.
- 37:44KARA: Now we're in East Riverside.
- 37:44DANI: Yeah.
- 37:44KARA And Monica
- 37:47and the other East Riverside locals are playing
- 37:50pickup basketball. And Daphne approaches and
- 37:52says, hey, can I play?
- 37:52DANI: She looks lame walking
- 37:55up. Sorry, I'm a hater.
- 37:55KARA: She's got her hands in
- 37:58her pocket and her head down like, hi, can I
- 38:00play?
- 38:00DANI: Yeah, she looks like the Debbie Ryan.
- 38:00KARA: I
- 38:03know. She looks exactly like that. And Monica is
- 38:06like, no.
- 38:06DANI: Yeah, she says, fuck you. This isn't
- 38:09The Wizard of Oz. You can't go home again. Ouch.
- 38:12DANI: Also love the concept of Midnight Madness basketball.
- 38:16KARA: It's just five girls playing basketball.
- 38:16DANI: Yeah.
- 38:18It's cute.
- 38:18KARA: It is cute.
- 38:18DANI: Daphne needs friends.
- 38:21KARA: She does.
- 38:21DANI: She just came because she's lonely.
- 38:25KARA: Yeah. And Simone's a bitch.
- 38:25DANI: Yeah.
- 38:25KARA: Yeah. I know.
- 38:29DANI: That's like her only friend right now.
- 38:29KARA: I know.
- 38:31DANI: Because Emmett is not in this episode at all.
- 38:33KARA: Emmett, Wilke, and Angelo are not in this episode.
- 38:36DANI: They said, get those male leads out of here.
- 38:38KARA: Literally.
- 38:38DANI: Or male guest stars.
- 38:38KARA: Everyone except
- 38:40John.
- 38:40DANI: Side characters. This is a John Kennish
- 38:42episode.
- 38:42KARA: Everyone except John and Toby. Yeah.
- 38:45All right. Now we're back at the Kennish house
- 38:47and Kathryn approaches Bonnie. They're in the
- 38:50kitchen again. And Kathryn is approaching Bonnie
- 38:53pretty much about the same conversation they
- 38:55had the day prior about biology and family.
- 38:59KARA: And Bonnie doubles down.
- 38:59DANI: Yeah. Kathryn gives
- 39:02her so many chances.
- 39:02KARA: I know. But Bonnie doubles
- 39:05down and says, but you carried Daphne and Regina
- 39:09carried Bay, doesn't that account for something?
- 39:11You guys share the same DNA and that's why I
- 39:15view Bay differently, obviously.
- 39:15DANI: Yeah. And Kathryn
- 39:17drops the coldest line in this episode.
- 39:17KARA: It was
- 39:19awesome. She goes, well you carried me and we share
- 39:22the same DNA but I couldn't feel less connected
- 39:25to you.
- 39:25DANI: What a killing. And this does upset Bonnie
- 39:29very much.
- 39:29KARA: Good.
- 39:29DANI: Yeah, good.
- 39:29KARA: And then Kathryn immediately
- 39:32goes to the bedroom with John brushing his teeth,
- 39:34confides in him, and then she goes, I may not be
- 39:38biologically related to Bay, but I feel so much
- 39:40closer to her.
- 39:40DANI: Yeah.
- 39:40KARA: Which makes sense because
- 39:42they raised her for 16 years.
- 39:42DANI: Yeah. She says
- 39:45sometimes Daphne feels like a stranger, which
- 39:47Kathryn doesn't express very often. So it was
- 39:49nice to see behind the curtain.
- 39:49KARA: And I could see
- 39:52that. I think I could see that when they were
- 39:53getting ready for tea.
- 39:53DANI: Yeah, totally.
- 39:53KARA: Like, they
- 39:56just weren't in sync.
- 39:56DANI: Yeah. And then John, he's
- 40:00so sexy in this scene, I think. He's so take
- 40:03charge. He's like, so fuck your mom. I'm buying
- 40:06her out of the car dealership.
- 40:06KARA: Yeah. He's like,
- 40:09if he's going to treat our daughter like this,
- 40:10we're buying her out.
- 40:10DANI: Yeah. And Kathryn kind
- 40:12of tries to get defensive. She's like, hey, she's
- 40:14still my mother. And he goes, and Bay is my daughter.
- 40:17And she will not be treated like that.
- 40:19And like, that's the right call.
- 40:19KARA: This was kind
- 40:22of hot of him.
- 40:22DANI: It was hot. And then Kathryn's
- 40:24like, you know what? Let me give her the check.
- 40:26KARA: Yeah. But before that, Kathryn's like, I used
- 40:29to be racist.
- 40:29DANI: LAUGHS - I forgot about that - LAUGHS. Oh, man.
- 40:29KARA: She's
- 40:34like, I'm not. Well, this is the first time now
- 40:36that Bay is experiencing prejudice because of
- 40:39her ethnicity.
- 40:39DANI: Yes.
- 40:39KARA: And I think Kathryn is
- 40:42also witnessing this. And she's like, oh, shit,
- 40:44I have also done this. And she's recalling an
- 40:47experience she had where Felipe and his painters
- 40:50came to paint the house. And she hid the silver
- 40:53because she was.
- 40:53DANI: She locked it up.
- 40:53KARAA: She locked
- 40:56up the silver. I guess she had some bias that
- 40:58they were going to steal it. But then when the
- 41:00white electrician came in, she didn't lock up
- 41:02the silver. But then I think what John says
- 41:05is, you are not as bad as your mom. Like, you
- 41:07are not your mother. Like, you learn from these
- 41:10things and you can change.
- 41:10DANI: And I think the fact
- 41:13that she's having those reflections now is evidence
- 41:16of that.
- 41:16KARA: And hugely different from Bonnie, because
- 41:19Bonnie just five minutes ago doubled down and
- 41:22was like, well, Bay's different and not white.
- 41:25DANI: Yeah. I know. Kathryn's trying to be like,
- 41:27how can I be a better ally to my quarter Puerto
- 41:30Rican daughter?
- 41:30KARA: Literally. But they're going
- 41:32to buy Bonnie out of the car wash. That'll be fun.
- 41:34KARA: After Bay throws white paint at her mural, she
- 41:37comes to Regina in tears.
- 41:37DANI: I know. She has streaks
- 41:41down her face from the white paint in the tear
- 41:44lines.
- 41:44KARA: Love that. But Regina is being nice for
- 41:47once. Invites her in.
- 41:47DANI: Yes. This is a really great
- 41:50Bay and Regina bonding. We don't get a lot of
- 41:53these.
- 41:53KARA: Rare. Rare sighting. Bay invites her in,
- 41:57and they're drinking their hot chocolate, I think?
- 42:00DANI: Yeah, it's hot chocolate with cinnamon sticks
- 42:02in it.
- 42:02KARA: Yeah, it's Mexican, guys.
- 42:02DANI: It's Mexican
- 42:04hot chocolate.
- 42:04DANI: And that's really what sets Bay
- 42:06off.
- 42:06KARA: Yeah, she's like, well, I didn't know that.
- 42:09And Regina is like, why would you? You grew up
- 42:12here.
- 42:12DANI: She's like, I didn't learn it until I went
- 42:15to the cafe. Because we're not Mexican.
- 42:15KARA: And also,
- 42:18being Puerto Rican is a culture, and the way
- 42:20you learn about culture is from living in it,
- 42:22not just having it in your blood. And it's tough
- 42:25because they've been there for months, and Bay
- 42:28has not been taught a single thing about her
- 42:30Puerto Rican heritage.
- 42:30DANI: No, and it should be up
- 42:33to Regina. Like, that's on Regina.
- 42:33KARA: And Adrianna,
- 42:35I would say, too.
- 42:35DANI: I just am, like, counting Adrianna
- 42:38out. Like, she does not seem invested in either
- 42:41of these teen girls at this point.
- 42:41KARA: I just think...
- 42:44DANI: It would be up to her, but, like, I don't think
- 42:46she's going to step up.
- 42:46KARA: That's true. I was just
- 42:49thinking, like, the only time Bay really tries
- 42:51to connect with her Puerto Rican heritage is
- 42:53Frida Kahlo, who she liked beforehand.
- 42:53DANI: Yeah.
- 42:57KARA: Because her bedroom is decorated with her quote.
- 42:59And going to that authentic Mexican restaurant
- 43:01with Ty.
- 43:01DANI: With Ty.
- 43:01KARA: That's kind of it. She learns
- 43:04more about her heritage from Angelo, really.
- 43:08DANI: Yeah.
- 43:08KARA: Because they have that whole date at the
- 43:10hotel where he explains where the family is from.
- 43:12DANI: Where she says, like, I'm Arab? Cool.
- 43:12KARA: Cool. And
- 43:16we even know about Daphne's heritage and the
- 43:18specific town where Kathryn's family is from.
- 43:21KARA: But we know nothing about Bay's Puerto Rican
- 43:25heritage, especially when Adrianna is there, who
- 43:28was born and raised in Puerto Rico.
- 43:28DANI: Yeah, you
- 43:31would think.
- 43:31KARA: We don't see family recipes.
- 43:31DANI: No.
- 43:35Well, Regina doesn't cook.
- 43:35KARA: Adrianna?
- 43:35DANI: We've never
- 43:38seen her cook.
- 43:38KARA: That's true.
- 43:38DANI: Daphne carries that
- 43:42household.
- 43:42KARA: That's true. Maybe Daphne knows the
- 43:45family recipes and can pass them on, I guess.
- 43:47DANI: Maybe.
- 43:47KARA: The meatless enchiladas, you know? But
- 43:50like, Bay's so frustrated. But I was like, why
- 43:53would you know? No one has helped you.
- 43:53DANI: There's
- 43:56just been so much drama about her dad.
- 43:56KARA: Yeah.
- 43:59DANI: And then also she's been learning sign language
- 44:02for Emmett.
- 44:02KARA: I know.
- 44:02DANI: She's immersing herself in
- 44:04different cultures that aren't what she is.
- 44:04KARA: Yeah,
- 44:07she's immersing herself in Deaf culture, which
- 44:08is also rightfully important, considering that
- 44:10her new sister and boyfriend are deaf, which
- 44:13is great. Maybe learn a few Spanish phrases.
- 44:16I don't know.
- 44:16DANI: I know. She doesn't express any
- 44:18interest in that.
- 44:18KARA: She doesn't. And I don't think
- 44:21that's something the show will ever go into.
- 44:24DANI: Interesting.
- 44:24KARA: Okay, Regina and Bay are chatting
- 44:27over their Mexican-style hot chocolate. And
- 44:30Regina's like, okay, you just found out you're
- 44:34a quarter Puerto Rican. Like, here's the rule book,
- 44:36basically. Bonnie is behaving the way she is
- 44:39because she's doing this out of ignorance. She's
- 44:41not doing it to be mean. And then she shares
- 44:43a story, which I want to get into a little more.
- 44:46KARA: She shares a story and says when Daphne got her
- 44:49hearing aids and they were first starting to
- 44:50sign, she would confront people who stared, but
- 44:53then that never helped. But we know that Daphne
- 44:57didn't start signing until she was eight. Did
- 44:59she then get her hearing aids at the same time
- 45:02when she was also eight? And was she just being
- 45:05deaf in the dark years from ages three to eight?
- 45:08DANI: Dude, yes. I think yes. I think that confirms
- 45:11that.
- 45:11KARA: That's fucking crazy.
- 45:11DANI: I know. I also thought
- 45:13that was crazy. We never get that information.
- 45:16KARA: Yeah. Because from that sentence she shared,
- 45:19hearing aids and sign happened at the same time.
- 45:22DANI: Like, did she? Was she just like so stupidly
- 45:25ignorant?
- 45:25KARA: Like she's deaf, there's nothing we can
- 45:27do.
- 45:27DANI: This is why it's so hard, like she owes that
- 45:30girl an apology.
- 45:30KARA: Like she's having such a nice
- 45:33time with Bay in the scene and in this entire
- 45:36episode but then I'm like what the hell happened
- 45:39with Daphne.
- 45:39DANI: Literally.
- 45:39KARA: It's so, it's so frustrating.
- 45:42KARA: But we have to back away from it or else I'm
- 45:45gonna get too mad. But Regina says you're gonna
- 45:48experience racism again and you're gonna learn
- 45:50how to handle it. I think I wish Regina offered
- 45:53some advice on like how she would have handled
- 45:56things instead of just being like you'll figure
- 45:58it out.
- 45:58DANI: She likes a hands-off approach.
- 45:58KARA: Yeah, but
- 46:01then Bay's like well thank you for that, thank
- 46:03you for the hot chocolate. One more thing, can
- 46:05you help me fix the mural? And Regina says yes.
- 46:08And then they go and fix the mural.
- 46:08DANI: Yeah and there's
- 46:11a moment before they start where Bay has this
- 46:14look on her face and Regina's like what is it?
- 46:16Bay's like No one in my family has ever painted
- 46:18with me before.
- 46:18KARA: She is thrilled. It's kind of
- 46:21beautiful.
- 46:21DANI: It's really sweet.
- 46:21KARA: And it sounds like
- 46:23they spent the whole night doing this. Because
- 46:25apparently the mural was due tomorrow, like a
- 46:27project.
- 46:27DANI: Like an assignment. We don't get to
- 46:30see it in this episode, do we?
- 46:30KARA: No. It's the next
- 46:32morning at the Kennish house, and Daphne hands
- 46:35the cameo back to Bonnie. She says, this is not
- 46:38for me.
- 46:38DANI: Yeah. She doesn't even say that, though.
- 46:40She walks in, she goes, good morning, and she
- 46:43just slides it wordlessly.
- 46:43KARA: And walks away. That's
- 46:46the end of that scene. Then, we're at some random
- 46:49park, and Toby and Simone are there.
- 46:49DANI: So random.
- 46:52KARA: It looks like the country club, actually.
- 46:52DANI: Maybe
- 46:53it is. Okay. Anyway.
- 46:53KARA: They are talking outside
- 46:57this park, and he apologizes for calling her
- 47:01out, I guess.
- 47:01DANI: Which I don't think he should have.
- 47:04KARA: Me neither.
- 47:04DANI: And she's like, I can't believe you're
- 47:06letting Bay get between us already. That's his
- 47:08sister who you clearly fucked over. I think it's
- 47:12okay for him to listen to her. Also, side note,
- 47:15Simone is wearing.
- 47:15KARA: Oh no.
- 47:15DANI: She's wearing like
- 47:18a sheer tan long sleeve, a denim vest, and then
- 47:25a skinny bold pattern scarf.
- 47:25KARA: Hate that.
- 47:25DANI: I was
- 47:29like, what temperature is it outside? The
- 47:32scarf looks so unnecessary.
- 47:32KARA: It's a statement
- 47:34piece. But then Toby lays down the law. He lays
- 47:37down some boundaries. He says, I can dress myself.
- 47:40I've been doing it since I was three. And I can
- 47:42do music myself. But I still want to be your
- 47:44boyfriend.
- 47:44DANI: Yeah. Just don't get involved in my
- 47:46music and we'll be good.
- 47:46KARA: And then she goes, I
- 47:50can't dress you, but I can undress you.
- 47:50DANI: Gross.
- 47:54KARA: I know. I wrote ew.
- 47:54DANI: I can't wait for them to
- 47:56break up.
- 47:56KARA: Me too. Then Regina arrives home from
- 48:00the mural painting with Bay, and she sees that
- 48:02Adrianna is moving out. I guess to just cool things
- 48:05down, since she did literally call ICE.
- 48:05DANI: Yeah,
- 48:09it feels like that's the right move. But Regina's
- 48:11pretty upset by this. She doesn't let her mom
- 48:13see it.
- 48:13KARA: Yeah, she's just like, oh, you're leaving.
- 48:16DANI: Yeah, she's moving back to East Riverside.
- 48:16KARA: In
- 48:19with a friend. And this is the scene where Regina's
- 48:22wearing her cropped purple cardigan.
- 48:22DANI: Yes.
- 48:22KARA: Anyway.
- 48:25KARA: Now, this is an interesting scene because now
- 48:27we're in Bay's room and Bonnie comes in and she
- 48:30gives Bay the cameo. And then she explains Daphne
- 48:35returned it because she feels like it belongs
- 48:37to you, which does not feel like an apology.
- 48:40KARA: She's like, well, I don't know what to do with
- 48:42this. So here you go.
- 48:42DANI: Well, she says, I agree.
- 48:44And I agree with her. But yeah, I agree with
- 48:47you too.
- 48:47KARA: But she didn't even think about it until
- 48:49Daphne gave it back.
- 48:49DANI: Yeah, I know. Even after
- 48:53Kathryn said what she said.
- 48:53KARA: She's only doing
- 48:55this because Daphne gave the cameo back and because
- 48:57Kathryn yelled at her on like three separate
- 48:59occasions. She's like, fine. But then later she
- 49:02does say like, you know, this whole switch must
- 49:05have been the hardest on you.
- 49:05DANI: Bay gets emotional
- 49:07about the brooch and then she asks Bonnie.
- 49:07KARA: She
- 49:10doesn't reach for it though.
- 49:10DANI: No. She asks Bonnie,
- 49:14do you really see me differently now? And Bonnie
- 49:17says, well, don't you see yourself differently
- 49:18now? And I think it's so fair for Bay to see
- 49:21herself differently.
- 49:21KARA: But I think Bonnie needs
- 49:24to keep her mouth shut.
- 49:24DANI: Yeah, I think Bonnie
- 49:25needs to keep those feelings to herself if she
- 49:27has them and maybe work through them.
- 49:27KARA: Yeah. Because
- 49:30Bonnie's not saying, I still love you and I still
- 49:34see you as my granddaughter. She's like, well,
- 49:36you are different.
- 49:36DANI: Yeah. Yeah. Bonnie really
- 49:38doesn't learn anything from this episode. There's
- 49:41not a lot of growth.
- 49:41KARA: She hands out the brooch
- 49:43or the cameo to Bay. Bay just stares at her and
- 49:47then Bonnie puts it on the table next to her
- 49:49and walks away.
- 49:49DANI: And is headed home.
- 49:49KARA: Yeah. Let's
- 49:53just wrap this up. So Bay politely says goodbye,
- 49:57but that's kind of it. And then Kathryn hands
- 50:00the check to Bonnie to buy her out of the car
- 50:03wash. And she looks dejected. And that's it.
- 50:06Bye, Bonnie.
- 50:06DANI: Bye, both grandmas. Bye-bye to
- 50:09both grandmas in this episode. Because then the
- 50:11next scene is Adrianna moving. Daphne's driven
- 50:14Adrianna to East Riverside.
- 50:14KARA: And then timeline
- 50:16check. Daphne says, we've been gone a few months.
- 50:19DANI: This is not lining up with what we just talked
- 50:22about. Okay, so then Cameron Bledsoe has been
- 50:26living with that woman. Like moved in with that
- 50:28woman after like six weeks, basically.
- 50:28KARA: Yeah,
- 50:31seems like it. Because Daphne's helping Adrianna
- 50:34move in and back into East Riverside. She looks
- 50:36around. She says, we've only been gone a few
- 50:38months. The place looks worse. Well, like their
- 50:40neighborhood looks worse.
- 50:40DANI: She said, damn, it
- 50:42looks bad here.
- 50:42KARA: And Adrianna says, so it's the
- 50:45same. You're just looking at things through Mission
- 50:48Hills eyes now. And then Daphne goes, do you
- 50:51think I changed? And then this was interesting
- 50:53because Adrianna says, The only thing that's changed
- 50:55is your zip code. You're still a Vasquez. But
- 50:58I disagree.
- 50:58DANI: Yeah.
- 50:58KARA: Because she just said, you're
- 51:02looking at this neighborhood through Mission
- 51:04Hills eyes now. So I think she has changed.
- 51:07DANI: Yeah, it's a little bit, yeah, contradictory.
- 51:10I think there's no nice way for anyone to be
- 51:13like, Daphne. You're kind of a white bitch now.
- 51:15KARA: You're not Latina.
- 51:15DANI: But you're not! Sorry, girl!
- 51:18KARA: No, you're not. You're a Vasquez, but you're
- 51:20not Latina. You were raised with the culture, that's
- 51:22wonderful, but you're not Latina.
- 51:22DANI: Yeah.
- 51:22KARA: Ethnically.
- 51:25DANI: Which should I say?
- 51:25KARA: Say it.
- 51:25DANI: Was she raised with
- 51:29the culture? It doesn't feel...
- 51:29KARA: She spoke like
- 51:32one sentence of Spanish with Monica.
- 51:32DANI: In the pilot
- 51:34episode. Oh.
- 51:34KARA: At the locker room with Monica.
- 51:37She said, La Paloma del Barrio.
- 51:37DANI: Okay. So she
- 51:41made one joke.
- 51:41KARA: She made one joke.
- 51:41DANI: I know that
- 51:44in the pilot episode, they really wanted to play
- 51:47up, like, Daphne's from all these different worlds.
- 51:49Like, look at her understanding Spanish and sign
- 51:53language and English and blah, blah, blah. But
- 51:56I feel like it's never come up again.
- 51:56KARA: Yeah, Daphne,
- 51:59not Daphne, Regina and Adrianna argue in Spanish
- 52:02in this episode. But we don't really see if Daphne
- 52:06can understand what they're saying.
- 52:06DANI: No.
- 52:06KARA: Or she
- 52:09doesn't even interject in Spanish. She doesn't
- 52:11say a word in Spanish. And this is probably because
- 52:13the actor doesn't know Spanish.
- 52:13DANI: Right. Well,
- 52:16she learned sign language for this role. I think
- 52:19they could have given her some lines in Spanish.
- 52:20She could have been okay.
- 52:20KARA: She could have said
- 52:22stop.
- 52:22DANI: I just don't feel like they've done a good
- 52:25enough job showing us that Daphne really, the
- 52:30fact that it's been a few months, she hasn't
- 52:32been back a single time?
- 52:32KARA: Yeah, I don't know.
- 52:34DANI: Isn't East Riverside like 20 minutes from Mission
- 52:36Hills?
- 52:36KARA: It's the next town over.
- 52:36DANI: Yeah.
- 52:36KARA: Yeah. Because
- 52:39Adrianna says, I'm not far. I'm only across town.
- 52:42DANI: Yeah. I don't know. Like, again, it's colored
- 52:45by how she's going to act in season two about
- 52:48being a Latina woman.
- 52:48KARA: Yes.
- 52:48DANI: Which she feels very
- 52:50strongly about.
- 52:50KARA: But we just have no proof of
- 52:53that right now.
- 52:53DANI: Yeah. Or like ever. They don't
- 52:56show that side of her on the show. And Katie
- 52:59LeClerc is just like the whitest woman ever.
- 53:02KARA: And you know who else is white? Vanessa Marano.
- 53:04DANI: Really?
- 53:04KARA: She's like 100% Italian.
- 53:04DANI: Wow.
- 53:04KARA: Or she's
- 53:08like Italian and like other half is white, European.
- 53:11DANI: Sure.
- 53:11KARA: Yeah.
- 53:11DANI: Kind of just like you.
- 53:11KARA: No, the other
- 53:15half is Middle Eastern.
- 53:15DANI: Oh. Kind of just like
- 53:18Bay.
- 53:18KARA: Like I'm Arab?
- 53:18DANI: You're like Bay.
- 53:18KARA: Cool.
- 53:18DANI: Yeah. BOTH LAUGH.
- 53:22DANI: Wow. What an episode.
- 53:22KARA: I know.
- 53:22DANI: Lots about identity.
- 53:26KARA: Lots about identity. The discussions on race
- 53:29were quite heavy handed.
- 53:29DANI: Well, it was 2012.
- 53:29KARA: That's
- 53:32true. I wish Emmett was here and that Bonnie got
- 53:34to meet him.
- 53:34DANI: Oh, would have loved that. Also,
- 53:38I think that this episode has the least amount
- 53:41of sign language in it of all the ones we've
- 53:43watched so far.
- 53:43KARA: Agreed.
- 53:43DANI: Like there's no...
- 53:43KARA: There's
- 53:47a tiny bit of simcom in the beginning with Regina
- 53:50and Daphne, and that's kind of it, because everyone
- 53:52else is hearing.
- 53:52DANI: Yeah, Bay is also simcomming
- 53:55to Daphne, but, like, real lazy. Like, she goes,
- 53:58like, what if he calls? And it's like, okay.
- 54:01KARA: Yeah, that is it. So hopefully there's more signing
- 54:03in the next episode.
- 54:03DANI: Yeah, I miss the deaf people.
- 54:07KARA: I'm feeling deprived.
- 54:07DANI: That is kind of the heart
- 54:09of the show.
- 54:09KARA: I know. That's truly the best part
- 54:12of the show is the deaf culture and deaf identity
- 54:13stuff. And maybe that's why we don't have any
- 54:16Latina heritage stuff.
- 54:16DANI: Maybe. They were like,
- 54:19it's too many things. It was 2012.
- 54:19KARA: They said
- 54:22we can only have one culture and it's Deaf
- 54:24culture. God forbid people are both. But whatever.
- 54:28DANI: Yeah. I guess that was part of why I was like,
- 54:31I don't really believe that Daphne and Monica
- 54:33are friends. Because why doesn't Monica know
- 54:35anything about sign language or being deaf? Like,
- 54:38she was like, don't you go to that special school?
- 54:40It's like, okay.
- 54:40KARA: She said, don't you go to that
- 54:42deaf school?
- 54:42DANI: Yeah.
- 54:42KARA: With the other deafies?
- 54:42DANI: Yeah.
- 54:45DANI: And I was like, if she's your friend and you
- 54:47guys play together as kids, what, she doesn't
- 54:49know any signs? Any basic?

- 55:01DANI: Yeah, he says, I will miss
