- 0:04Speaker 1: I'm a Bucking Boomer movie. I don't wonder. It's a Tuesday,
- 0:13Speaker 1: a Texan Tuesday. Here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Zone, the producer Jay Herman is dedicated to the
- 0:23Speaker 1: proposition that the return cuts in today's program and every
- 0:28Speaker 1: Tuesday are not limited to, but are required to include
- 0:35Speaker 1: a return cut from the King George Straight in the
- 0:37Speaker 1: four o'clock hour, in the three o'clock hour from the
- 0:40Speaker 1: iconic Willie Nelson, and here in the two o'clock hour,
- 0:44Speaker 1: the immortal Stevie ray Vaughn. Just the sky's crying? Is
- 0:49Speaker 1: it raining outside? No? Just when we haven't come back
- 0:52Speaker 1: with yet in my coming up on one year here
- 0:54Speaker 1: this is a nineteen eighty five version, yep, the late
- 0:59Speaker 1: great Stevie Ray. We continue our SEC football previews. One
- 1:04Speaker 1: of the benefits I've always said is of broadcasting the
- 1:08Speaker 1: team's games play by play is getting an opportunity to
- 1:13Speaker 1: visit with and getting to know and becoming friends with
- 1:15Speaker 1: in some cases some of the other play by play.
- 1:18Speaker 1: This goes all the way back to when I was
- 1:20Speaker 1: on the broadcasting for North Texas back in the eighties
- 1:22Speaker 1: and that sort of thing, and when I first started
- 1:24Speaker 1: working in the Texas broadcast with Bill Shooning in the
- 1:26Speaker 1: nineties and then moving into the play by play chair
- 1:29Speaker 1: in the one to o two Athletics season. Prior to that, however,
- 1:33Speaker 1: I've gotten a chance to me get to know and
- 1:36Speaker 1: then they call him a friend, the longtime play by
- 1:39Speaker 1: play voice and the Missouri Tigers who joins us now
- 1:41Speaker 1: from Columbia, the one and only Mike Kelly Michael, how
- 1:45Speaker 1: are you well?
- 1:47Speaker 2: I'm much better after hearing the late great Stevie ray
- 1:50Speaker 2: Vaughn me. I was grooving, so Jake, you nailed it,
- 1:56Speaker 2: my friend. And in fact, let's do the listeners even
- 2:00Speaker 2: more of a pleasure on this Tuesday. I'll shut up
- 2:04Speaker 2: and let's go back to stud Hey.
- 2:06Speaker 1: We could either do that or or And this is
- 2:09Speaker 1: how I was going to lead off. For folks who
- 2:11Speaker 1: don't know, Missouri is going to open its football season
- 2:14Speaker 1: on September third, Thursday night game against Arkansas Pine Bluff.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And if you're going to the game in Columbia, you're
- 2:21Speaker 1: in for a treat because if you go to Mutigers
- 2:24Speaker 1: dot com their website, you will see the one and
- 2:27Speaker 1: only Cheryl Crowe Missoo to perform the national anthem there,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and I'm guessing Mike is probably not the first time
- 2:37Speaker 1: that Cheryl's done it. And I know she's a very
- 2:39Speaker 1: proud missou will love, but to have her lead off
- 2:42Speaker 1: the season with the anthem's pretty cool. Yeah it is she.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I don't know that that she's done that.
- 2:50Speaker 1: She's done events.
- 2:53Speaker 2: When we opened Missouri Arena, she did an event, a
- 2:56Speaker 2: little small concert for a group of a group of
- 2:59Speaker 2: donors some twenty years ago. When Massoo played at Vandy.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Last year, she was.
- 3:07Speaker 2: She was there and on the field, and uh, you
- 3:10Speaker 2: know I had a chance to, uh to say hid her.
- 3:12Speaker 1: She was.
- 3:12Speaker 2: She was in the Athletic Directors booth which is next
- 3:15Speaker 2: to the visiting radio booth in Nashville. So, uh, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 2: she's made her way back to Columbia, you know, on
- 3:23Speaker 2: multiple occasions. And so yeah, I just I just got
- 3:26Speaker 2: word of that the other day or actually earlier today
- 3:28Speaker 2: when I saw the saw the release. That'll be that.
- 3:31Speaker 2: That'll be very neat to hear her do that.
- 3:34Speaker 1: And then it'll lead off into the season where the
- 3:36Speaker 1: Tigers are coming off an eight and five season a
- 3:39Speaker 1: year ago and getting to the Gator Bowl. What's with
- 3:43Speaker 1: with what Eli Drinkwitz has coming out and by the way,
- 3:47Speaker 1: just looking at that thinking about it, his seventh year
- 3:51Speaker 1: as as the head coach, time does fly, uh, with
- 3:55Speaker 1: with what he has coming back, especially in the offensive
- 3:57Speaker 1: side of the football, I would imagine there's a great
- 3:59Speaker 1: deal of optimst some about what's to come this season.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's optimism. Obviously, the there's an upgrade
- 4:05Speaker 2: in the schedule, you know it. Uh, you know, Texas
- 4:08Speaker 2: comes to Columbia, Missouri goes to Georgia, has to go
- 4:11Speaker 2: to Old miss you know. So there's those are some
- 4:15Speaker 2: of the things that you know, you think about as
- 4:18Speaker 2: well as that the schedule is is much more difficult,
- 4:22Speaker 2: you know. But but yeah, there there there's there's optimism.
- 4:25Speaker 2: But Craig, come on, man, we've been We've been doing
- 4:28Speaker 2: this a long time, my friend, and we all know
- 4:30Speaker 2: this that during this the you know, people call it
- 4:33Speaker 2: the talking season. I call it the Lions the lion season,
- 4:36Speaker 2: because you know, every coach loves their team, every coach
- 4:40Speaker 2: loves their staff, every coach loves their a d. Every
- 4:43Speaker 2: fan base loves their team. It's like, you know, it's
- 4:46Speaker 2: the anticipation of this event that's going to arrive in
- 4:49Speaker 2: late August and earlier September, and that's the start of
- 4:51Speaker 2: the season that we all we all love so much.
- 4:53Speaker 1: You know, you you have a unique schedule. And here's
- 4:58Speaker 1: what I mean by that, when when I have visited,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and we started this last week visiting with every play
- 5:02Speaker 1: by play voice around the Southeastern Conference, continuing this week
- 5:05Speaker 1: and then through next week, where we'll hear from everybody.
- 5:08Speaker 1: But in the case of some of the guys, Kentucky
- 5:12Speaker 1: comes to mind, Florida comes to mind. There's a couple
- 5:16Speaker 1: in this new world that we have of nine conference games.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Even with nine conference games, usually the three week ramp
- 5:25Speaker 1: up would probably work out pretty well. Now you may
- 5:28Speaker 1: have a tough non conference game. Obviously Texas has Ohio's
- 5:31Speaker 1: takeming in here second week of the year, but in
- 5:33Speaker 1: several cases they have the three weeks. But there are
- 5:36Speaker 1: some cases Florida comes to mine, Kentucky comes to mine.
- 5:39Speaker 1: As I mentioned, Georgia comes to mind, where they only
- 5:42Speaker 1: have the two non conference because they have a traditional
- 5:45Speaker 1: rival on the tail end of the regular season. In
- 5:48Speaker 1: the case of the Tigers, it's interesting, you've got three
- 5:53Speaker 1: non conference games, and yet the middle one of those
- 5:56Speaker 1: is that border war that had gotten ramped up again
- 5:59Speaker 1: with with the game of Kansas. So I guess that
- 6:01Speaker 1: kind of adds to the flavor of it.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Well, it does, and it will be a game that obviously,
- 6:07Speaker 2: you know, Kansas has circled on its calendar because it's
- 6:10Speaker 2: the first time Missouri has played in Lawrence since since
- 6:13Speaker 2: leaving you know, the Big Twelve Conference. And if you
- 6:17Speaker 2: remember prior to leaving the Big Twelve when the Zoo
- 6:19Speaker 2: played Ku, it was always a neutral side game. But
- 6:22Speaker 2: I think maybe the last eight ten years at Arrowhead Stadium,
- 6:25Speaker 2: so Missoo and football has not been back to Lawrence
- 6:29Speaker 2: in quite a while. It's a game that a year
- 6:31Speaker 2: ago Missouri fell behind early by fourteen and came back
- 6:34Speaker 2: and won the game. So that's that's a trip on
- 6:37Speaker 2: a Friday night opening you know their new stadium as well.
- 6:44Speaker 2: That that'll be a that'll be an interesting mission for
- 6:46Speaker 2: Missouri that night in Lawrence, Kansas.
- 6:49Speaker 1: No doubt about it. Let me get your thoughts. We're
- 6:50Speaker 1: visiting with Mike Kelly, Miszoo Tigers played by playboys. Let
- 6:54Speaker 1: me get your thoughts. Let's start with the offense. And
- 6:57Speaker 1: I know a lot of people and in these conversations
- 7:00Speaker 1: quite frequently. I've started with the quarterback. I'll get to
- 7:02Speaker 1: the quarterback in a minute. But when you have arguably
- 7:06Speaker 1: the best running back in the SEC are right there
- 7:09Speaker 1: amongst them, and one of the best in the country
- 7:12Speaker 1: in Amad Hardy, who I saw when he was playing
- 7:14Speaker 1: for ul Monroe when they came in a couple of
- 7:16Speaker 1: years ago in Austin. He's a guy that can be
- 7:19Speaker 1: pretty special and can really transform an offense, isn't he
- 7:24Speaker 1: He is.
- 7:26Speaker 2: The caveat being we don't know what he's going to play. Yep,
- 7:30Speaker 2: you know he was. He was shot in May in
- 7:34Speaker 2: mid May and has gone through a lengthy process to
- 7:38Speaker 2: try and uh to to to get healthy and and
- 7:41Speaker 2: and get back into football shape. We're seven days into practice,
- 7:46Speaker 2: or actually seven practices in and he's yet to appear.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And so, you know, the word has gone from midway
- 7:53Speaker 2: in the summer, it's too early to tell uh to.
- 7:57Speaker 2: You know, he will play at some point during the season,
- 8:00Speaker 2: or he will be regularly ready to play at some
- 8:02Speaker 2: point in the season. He is, he has yet to
- 8:06Speaker 2: appear in practice at this point in time, and so
- 8:09Speaker 2: and again that's that's no surprise. He led drink. What's
- 8:12Speaker 2: indicated in his preseason meeting with the media that Hardy
- 8:17Speaker 2: would not participate in at least the first week of camp.
- 8:22Speaker 2: The good news is that you have Jamal Roberts, who
- 8:24Speaker 2: I contend would start on most teams in our league.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Jamal Roberts returns a young man from Saint Louis. They
- 8:31Speaker 2: were able to go into the into the portal and
- 8:33Speaker 2: get a young man from Houston Christian who ran for
- 8:35Speaker 2: sixteen hundred yards a year ago, and Zichean Edwards and
- 8:39Speaker 2: then Malaya Fonote also was a guy that they were
- 8:45Speaker 2: able to pick up out of the out of the
- 8:48Speaker 2: portal as well, and so they feel good about depth
- 8:51Speaker 2: right now, even with Hardy, you know, not practicing at
- 8:56Speaker 2: this point in time. And so you know, I tried
- 9:00Speaker 2: to tell people Craig from from my point of view, it's,
- 9:03Speaker 2: you know, we all get caught up in the transactional
- 9:05Speaker 2: part of the relationship. When's he gonna play, when's he
- 9:07Speaker 2: gonna play. Let's getting healthy, and you know, I worry
- 9:11Speaker 2: about the life and life after football part of it.
- 9:14Speaker 2: And let's make sure he's at one hundred percent when
- 9:17Speaker 2: it's time for him to restart his pursuit of what
- 9:22Speaker 2: certainly most people anticipate being a professional career in football.
- 9:27Speaker 1: No doubt about it. And you followed dovetailed exactly to
- 9:30Speaker 1: where I was going to go next, and that was
- 9:31Speaker 1: to ask you about Jamal Roberts, because not knowing the
- 9:35Speaker 1: unknown thing with Hardy, what are the things about Roberts,
- 9:39Speaker 1: Like you said, he could probably start on most other teams,
- 9:42Speaker 1: And it looks like, depending on how things go with
- 9:45Speaker 1: Hardy and the continued work towards starting the season, that
- 9:48Speaker 1: Roberts at least will get the Lions here or a
- 9:52Speaker 1: good chunk of carries even when Hardy comes back, because
- 9:56Speaker 1: and they know it no better than right here in Austin,
- 9:58Speaker 1: it helps to have more than one healthy running back.
- 10:01Speaker 1: So to have Roberts there, it's not a big step down.
- 10:04Speaker 1: It's not a big step down, is it. No, it's not.
- 10:09Speaker 2: You know, he you know you were mentioning in the
- 10:11Speaker 2: Kansas gaming one hundred and forty three yards against Kansas
- 10:13Speaker 2: on thirteen carries a year ago in Missouri's comeback win,
- 10:18Speaker 2: you know, had seventy five yards on the road again
- 10:20Speaker 2: or yeah, on the road against South Carolina, And so
- 10:24Speaker 2: all right, Shu at home against South Carolina. You know,
- 10:25Speaker 2: a schedule from year to years. Sometimes it's confusing. But
- 10:30Speaker 2: here's again that was primarily early in his career a
- 10:32Speaker 2: third down back and now has progressed into a guy
- 10:36Speaker 2: that can can can be an important part of the offense,
- 10:39Speaker 2: you know, your best pass catching threat as a running back.
- 10:43Speaker 2: There are some scouts that think that he's a better
- 10:45Speaker 2: pro prospect then a Mott Hardy just because of his
- 10:50Speaker 2: ability to not only catch the football but do things
- 10:54Speaker 2: after catching the football. So guy that can run the
- 10:56Speaker 2: outside zone, which you know, as you know and Eli
- 10:58Speaker 2: Drinkwinz's offense now with Chip Lindsay as the offensive coordinator
- 11:02Speaker 2: of the Missouri likes to do, you know, and as
- 11:05Speaker 2: a guy that is certainly I think capable of tough
- 11:10Speaker 2: inside yardage as well as evidenced by the fact scored
- 11:13Speaker 2: the game winner against Aueign a year ago on a
- 11:15Speaker 2: little four yard run.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Let me jump the quarterback. Folks got to know Austin
- 11:19Speaker 1: Simmons when he was an old miss rebel a year
- 11:21Speaker 1: ago before getting banged up and then Trinidad Jamblers took
- 11:24Speaker 1: over the rains and hasn't looked back after that. But
- 11:27Speaker 1: he's viewed as being a quality guy. He was a
- 11:30Speaker 1: starter in the SEC before the injury. How about your
- 11:32Speaker 1: thoughts on Simmons and is he the guy right now
- 11:36Speaker 1: at transferring in as the number one quarterback from Zoom.
- 11:40Speaker 2: He was named as the starting quarterback during spring play
- 11:43Speaker 2: by Eled drink Witz in a competition that lasted a
- 11:47Speaker 2: few weeks during spring ball between he and Matt Zalers,
- 11:50Speaker 2: who Zalars as a freshman, you know, was forced into
- 11:54Speaker 2: action with the injury to vote review the last year
- 11:58Speaker 2: in the game at Vanderbilt. But the thing you notice
- 12:01Speaker 2: about Austin Simmons, first of all, the left handed quarterback
- 12:05Speaker 2: can spend it. You know, the ball comes out differently
- 12:07Speaker 2: than it does for most guys that we've seen here
- 12:10Speaker 2: over the last several years of Missouri has the ability
- 12:13Speaker 2: to throw the ball downfield with accuracy, you know. And
- 12:18Speaker 2: I think we'll give Missouri the ability to do something
- 12:21Speaker 2: they haven't done in the last couple of years in
- 12:23Speaker 2: this offense, and that is more seam patterns, try to
- 12:27Speaker 2: take the top off the defense with you know, stretching
- 12:29Speaker 2: the field on vertical routes and things like that. Here's
- 12:33Speaker 2: the thing though, that that I look at there are
- 12:37Speaker 2: going to be growing pains. And why do I say that,
- 12:39Speaker 2: Because he's only throwing one hundred and seven passes in
- 12:44Speaker 2: his career, So that tells you that they're going to
- 12:47Speaker 2: be growing pains along the way. He's going to see
- 12:49Speaker 2: things as the starting quarterback of Missouri this year, particularly
- 12:54Speaker 2: in those nine sec games that he's probably never seen
- 12:56Speaker 2: before even his time during his time into at a
- 13:00Speaker 2: miss And so how does it react, you know, as
- 13:03Speaker 2: they say, when the when the live bullets are flying.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I think the good news is again going back to
- 13:07Speaker 2: the running backs he's got. Missouri hopes it's got the
- 13:10Speaker 2: ability to run the football to be able to take
- 13:12Speaker 2: some pressure off the quarterback. And the one thing Craig,
- 13:16Speaker 2: in watching the first seven practices I will say is
- 13:19Speaker 2: that Missouri has upgraded in terms of its its depth
- 13:23Speaker 2: and talent at wide receiver and so that should help
- 13:27Speaker 2: along with a corps of tight ends that returns with
- 13:29Speaker 2: guys like Brett Norfleek, Georgean Harris, and Juke James who
- 13:34Speaker 2: have all been in the program for the last several years.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Well, I was I'm glad you answered that question. I
- 13:39Speaker 1: was going to that and then I'm just going to
- 13:40Speaker 1: get to the offensive line, because even though Missouri's lost
- 13:43Speaker 1: two or three guys as starters on the offensive front
- 13:47Speaker 1: past couple of years, You've got some core guys back.
- 13:50Speaker 1: And the portal I think has helped you out had
- 13:52Speaker 1: it in terms of replenishing the numbers and the depth.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it has. You know, if you look at the
- 13:58Speaker 2: makeup the returning guys, Hayden Green returns at left tackle.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Dom Judicia transfer from Michigan a year ago. He'll move
- 14:07Speaker 2: from left guard to center, so he'll become missouri starting center,
- 14:13Speaker 2: replacing Connor Thomason who graduated. So then as Curtis Pigler
- 14:18Speaker 2: returns the right guard, so who moves into the left
- 14:21Speaker 2: guard position. In the right tackle position, Tristan Wilson is
- 14:25Speaker 2: a kid from Lebanon, Missouri, about two two and a
- 14:27Speaker 2: half hours away from the Columbia campus. It's been in
- 14:30Speaker 2: the program for three years. He'll be the guy that's
- 14:33Speaker 2: going to start at left guard. Also probably your number
- 14:35Speaker 2: two center if anything happens to Judicia and then a
- 14:39Speaker 2: transfer from Mississippi State. And Luke Wark has been the
- 14:43Speaker 2: guy who's been operating as the starting right tackle so
- 14:47Speaker 2: far through camp. You know, they added another transfer from
- 14:52Speaker 2: Mississippi State and Zach Owens, who provides, you know, some
- 14:55Speaker 2: depth on that offensive line. The guy they had hoped
- 14:58Speaker 2: to be the starter at right to back is a
- 15:01Speaker 2: transfer from Arizona State and Josh Atkins, but he suffered
- 15:04Speaker 2: a knee injury in the spring, reinjured that knee during
- 15:08Speaker 2: the course of the summer, and you know, I'm not
- 15:11Speaker 2: sure if he'll get to play it all this season.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Visiting with Mike Kelly voice on the Missouri Tigers here
- 15:16Speaker 1: for a couple more minutes. Let me jump to the defense.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Is it fair to say uh? Or is this kind
- 15:20Speaker 1: of being overlooked by folks who look at things like
- 15:24Speaker 1: returning numbers and key playmakers and say, if the biggest
- 15:29Speaker 1: question mark from a zoom might be on the defensive
- 15:32Speaker 1: side of the football, is that a fair assessment? Or
- 15:35Speaker 1: is this being overlooked the guys that are there and
- 15:37Speaker 1: the guys who have come in to replenish on the
- 15:40Speaker 1: defensive side of the ball.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Well, I think it's.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Did you say it? Yeah? I'm sorry I lost it
- 15:49Speaker 1: there for a second there, Mike, Did you say yeah?
- 15:51Speaker 1: Fair assessments?
- 15:53Speaker 2: No, it's fair because you have to replace the eleven starters,
- 15:56Speaker 2: and so you've got again guys that have been in
- 15:58Speaker 2: the program, a guy like a Marquise Grasil or a
- 16:02Speaker 2: Jalen Marshall, you know, two interior tackles who have been
- 16:05Speaker 2: in the program for four years. You know, part of
- 16:11Speaker 2: what made Gary Pinkel successful at Missouri is that those
- 16:14Speaker 2: guys that had been in the program for a while,
- 16:16Speaker 2: when they finally got their opportunity, they played the best
- 16:18Speaker 2: football of their life. And so can guys like Garcial
- 16:22Speaker 2: and Marshall do that on the edge? Langdon Kitchen is
- 16:26Speaker 2: a kid that came in from Northwest Missouri a year ago.
- 16:29Speaker 2: He'll play at one of those defensive end positions, replacing
- 16:32Speaker 2: Zion Young who's now in the NFL. Dearis Smith is
- 16:36Speaker 2: a kid who transferred from Georgia a few years ago
- 16:38Speaker 2: and edge rusher on the joker side of the defensive line.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Dearris is a guy that a year ago played at
- 16:45Speaker 2: about probably two hundred and thirty two hundred and thirty
- 16:47Speaker 2: five pounds, and now he's two sixty five and has
- 16:50Speaker 2: been able to maintain his speed and quickness despite putting
- 16:53Speaker 2: on an extra thirty pounds. And so again a lack
- 16:57Speaker 2: of productivity and experience up front, But can those guys
- 17:02Speaker 2: produce and have the best years of their their college careers.
- 17:07Speaker 2: At linebacker, Niko Rodriguez returns. He started a majority of
- 17:10Speaker 2: the games a year ago young man out of Miami, Florida.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Jeremiah Beasley is the guy that played a number of
- 17:15Speaker 2: snaps last year as another inside linebacker, but again stepping
- 17:19Speaker 2: in replacing the Jeremiah Trotter who's now in the NFL.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Nick Deloche the only returning starter in the secondary at cornerback,
- 17:27Speaker 2: but Missouri has been able I think to add some
- 17:30Speaker 2: guys from the University of Oregon is a guy, a big,
- 17:36Speaker 2: rangy cornerback at six'. Four Jalio florence is another kid
- 17:39Speaker 2: that they brought in that again a little bit of.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Experience Chris graves From ole miss has come in and
- 17:46Speaker 2: and secured i think one of the starting positions at
- 17:49Speaker 2: cornerback as. Well then in the back, End Trajan greco
- 17:53Speaker 2: is a kid that's been in the program for a few.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Years Santana banners is a returning. Guy you, know those
- 17:59Speaker 2: two guys have solidified themselves as, starters but they've been
- 18:02Speaker 2: able to bring in death from Jay Don blair is
- 18:05Speaker 2: a kid From Notre dame that you, know at six,' four,
- 18:08Speaker 2: you know looks the part of a OF an sec
