Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Abadi here. You are listening to five
- 0:22Speaker 1: minute Friday from Hurdle. That is exactly how I feel
- 0:28Speaker 1: right now. I'm sitting in a hotel room. Why is
- 0:32Speaker 1: every episode that I record lately, That's how it starts.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'm in Berlin and in gosh, forty eight hours from
- 0:41Speaker 1: when you hear this episode. If you're listening to it.
- 0:44Speaker 1: On Friday, I will run my twelfth marathon. And for
- 0:48Speaker 1: those of you that aren't runners and aren't here for.
- 0:51Speaker 2: This journey, I apologize.
- 0:52Speaker 1: But this journey has been rich and it's been a
- 0:55Speaker 1: big deal for me, especially coming back from so much
- 0:59Speaker 1: injury and so so I am just feeling really grateful
- 1:03Speaker 1: and really happy and really content. And if you subscribe
- 1:06Speaker 1: to the weekly Hurdle newsletter, I wrote a bit about
- 1:09Speaker 1: that in today's installment, so get on that. The link
- 1:12Speaker 1: to do that if you don't just yet subscribe is
- 1:15Speaker 1: in the show notes. Today, though, I want to talk
- 1:18Speaker 1: to you about what happened at the airport. I've been
- 1:20Speaker 1: in my fair share of airports over the last few days,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and on the way here, I was coming from Bologna
- 1:27Speaker 1: in Italy. I went there for work for a couple
- 1:31Speaker 1: of days before making my way over to Germany. And
- 1:35Speaker 1: this is the first trip in my life that I
- 1:37Speaker 1: have ever brought both a checked suitcase and a carry
- 1:42Speaker 1: on suitcase as well as a personal item. I've never
- 1:44Speaker 1: brought two suitcases. But I'm traveling until next Saturday and
- 1:51Speaker 1: going to be in some different climates temperatures.
- 1:55Speaker 2: It just needed to happen that way.
- 1:56Speaker 1: And so, needless to say, when I was organizing everything
- 2:00Speaker 1: going from point A to point B, I forgot that
- 2:02Speaker 1: I put one of my larger sized items in my
- 2:07Speaker 1: carry on that was technically too big to be in
- 2:10Speaker 1: my carry on. So I'm talking about the try slide.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Tryslide is like a spray you can liken it to
- 2:16Speaker 1: like body glide, and it's been my go to. I'ly
- 2:19Speaker 1: get in the show notes for anything anti chaf, so
- 2:24Speaker 1: I've used bodyglide, but the try slide it just feels easier.
- 2:28Speaker 1: It's like putting on spray SPF. It's my go to,
- 2:31Speaker 1: and I had packed it in my carry on two case.
- 2:34Speaker 1: And I'm going through the TSA. I don't even know
- 2:38Speaker 1: if they call it TSA over here, but I'm going
- 2:39Speaker 1: through the security and this woman at first tells me
- 2:45Speaker 1: to take my liquids out of my carry on. I
- 2:48Speaker 1: forgot that they were in there. I go back, I
- 2:50Speaker 1: take my liquids out of my carry on. They go
- 2:52Speaker 1: through the screening thing and rather than pick up like
- 2:54Speaker 1: the clear bag that has all of my stuff in it,
- 2:57Speaker 1: I see her reach four the try slide that I'd
- 3:02Speaker 1: put in the bin next to my toiletries bag. And
- 3:06Speaker 1: I didn't even think twice when I did this. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: so I look at her and she looks at me,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and she holds this up and she says what is this?
- 3:13Speaker 1: And I'm like, it's anti CHAF spray, And she said,
- 3:17Speaker 1: what's it for? And I said, I'm going to run
- 3:18Speaker 1: a marathon. It's so that my thighs don't rub together.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And mind you, like, there's a little bit of a
- 3:25Speaker 1: language barrier here. She's speaking English to me, but I
- 3:28Speaker 1: would assume that a word like chaf might be a
- 3:31Speaker 1: little weird. Anyway, she instinctively goes to me, it's too big.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And you know that emoji where the eyes are really
- 3:39Speaker 1: big and it looks like the emoji is going to
- 3:41Speaker 1: cry Like that was me irl standing in that security moment,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and I just looked at her, and in my head,
- 3:49Speaker 1: I am thinking this is my go to I don't
- 3:52Speaker 1: want to get.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Rid of this right now, I'm running a marathon. Oh
- 3:56Speaker 2: my god.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And she looks at me and she says, tell me,
- 4:00Speaker 1: this is medical. And I look at her basically I've
- 4:03Speaker 1: turned into a robot. And I nod my head and
- 4:06Speaker 1: I say this is medical. And she nods her head
- 4:09Speaker 1: at me, and she walks over to some other machine
- 4:11Speaker 1: and grabs one of those little wipe things and wipes
- 4:13Speaker 1: it down and waits for the machine to tell her
- 4:16Speaker 1: good to go, comes back to me, hands me the
- 4:19Speaker 1: bottle and says run good. And I just felt in
- 4:23Speaker 1: that moment like it was such a karma. It was
- 4:26Speaker 1: a full circle. Be a good person, do good things,
- 4:29Speaker 1: good will come back to you. I don't encourage rule breaking,
- 4:35Speaker 1: but in this moment, I am so grateful that she
- 4:38Speaker 1: just blessed.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Me and enabled me to move on. And uh, yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 2: karma is a good thing.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And so as I'm out here, there are tons of tourists,
- 4:49Speaker 1: there's a lot going on, people are stressed that might
- 4:52Speaker 1: be around me, And all I will promise to do
- 4:55Speaker 1: is just be as good of a person as I
- 4:57Speaker 1: possibly can, because someone was looking out for me, and
- 5:01Speaker 1: it's my turn to look out for somebody else. My
- 5:03Speaker 1: prompt for you going into the weekend is not really
- 5:07Speaker 1: a prompt at all. Maybe it's just a little bit
- 5:09Speaker 1: of encouragement to have a little grace with someone else
- 5:12Speaker 1: that you come across, knowing that you never know what
- 5:14Speaker 1: they're going through. That woman had no idea where my
- 5:17Speaker 1: head was at in that moment. I mean, she knew
- 5:20Speaker 1: that I was going to run a marathon, or maybe
- 5:22Speaker 1: she didn't actually understand what I was telling her, but
- 5:24Speaker 1: she chose to have compassion with me, and I encourage
- 5:27Speaker 1: you to choose compassion and grace with someone else that
- 5:30Speaker 1: you come across this weekend.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And now a listener question. Hi, Emily, this is Alex
- 5:36Speaker 2: calling in from Brooklyn. How do you prepare differently for
- 5:40Speaker 2: a marathon when you're traveling internationally? Oh, this is a
- 5:43Speaker 2: good one.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Okay, I feel like you know again, I'm sorry it's
- 5:47Speaker 1: been run heavy on the content lately, but how can
- 5:50Speaker 1: you blame me?
- 5:51Speaker 2: This is what's going on in my life at this
- 5:53Speaker 2: very moment.
- 5:55Speaker 1: So traveling for a marathon, I would say the things
- 5:58Speaker 1: that are different about traveling the marathon really just entail
- 6:03Speaker 1: a little bit more preparation. When I travel for a marathon.
- 6:07Speaker 1: There are things that I need to make sure that
- 6:08Speaker 1: I bring with me. So it's really important to make
- 6:11Speaker 1: a solid packing list. Things that are on my packing
- 6:15Speaker 1: list now that maybe have not been previously because now
- 6:19Speaker 1: I have more experience. I bring my own jiff to
- 6:23Speaker 1: go travel peanut butter. I found that, like I don't
- 6:26Speaker 1: love the peanut butter always that I'm finding when I'm
- 6:28Speaker 1: on the go. I also carry with me my go
- 6:32Speaker 1: tos which is AG one Element salt packets, as well
- 6:36Speaker 1: as the U Can Edge. And then I really really
- 6:41Speaker 1: really would one hundred percent recommend do not this is
- 6:45Speaker 1: you must do this carry on your marathon items. So
- 6:48Speaker 1: that means that in my carry on suitcase, which I
- 6:51Speaker 1: accidentally put the body glide into, I also brought the
- 6:54Speaker 1: sneakers I'm running in on Sunday, the shorts I'm running
- 6:57Speaker 1: in on Sunday, the socks, the shirt, the sports ra
- 7:00Speaker 1: the sunglasses, all the things that I would have been
- 7:03Speaker 1: beside myself if had been lost in the luggage that
- 7:07Speaker 1: I checked. The last thing that I would highly recommend
- 7:11Speaker 1: if you are checking a bag and have anxiety like
- 7:13Speaker 1: I do is get an air tag. This air tag
- 7:16Speaker 1: and being able to see where my suitcase is slash
- 7:20Speaker 1: was when I'm on the move is truly such a
- 7:23Speaker 1: sanity saver and I cannot recommend that enough. And okay,
- 7:27Speaker 1: I said that was kind of the last thing, but
- 7:29Speaker 1: really the last thing also is you will not regret
- 7:33Speaker 1: bringing a massive water bottle with you. I drank at
- 7:36Speaker 1: least five bottles of water on my eight hour flight abroad.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And you want to make sure that you're hydrating because
- 7:44Speaker 1: being up in the air traveling, it is super easy
- 7:46Speaker 1: to get dehydrated, which is also why that element comes
- 7:50Speaker 1: in the clutch.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Hydration is important. You got to take care of yourself.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Because you didn't come this far to only come this far, right,
- 7:58Speaker 1: I think I think that's it for now. Oh my god,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I'll be back next week. I will, and I'm going
- 8:08Speaker 1: to do good and it's just another hurdle that I'm
- 8:11Speaker 1: going to conquer. That's it for now. With that another
- 8:17Speaker 1: hurdle conquered, Catch you guys next time. Follow along over
- 8:21Speaker 1: on social I'll see you there.
