- 0:20Scorchers go on. Hello and welcome back to the
- 0:25Easy Double Podcast episode 49. My name is Ryan, I'm your host,
- 0:30and I'm joined by Owen Smith from over a couple of ponds back
- 0:34in Ireland on Monday afternoon. How you doing, Owen?
- 0:38Good over here, and there can't be much rain left in the sky
- 0:42over here because all of it has falling in the last week.
- 0:45So other than that, I'm good. It's, it's the grand now, isn't
- 0:50it? You've, you've passed Blue
- 0:52Monday, that is, do they call it that?
- 0:53An island as well. This rarely blue Monday over
- 0:57here, it's only grey bleak Monday.
- 1:01No, I think blue refers to like the mental states of you're
- 1:06being a slog. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:08And. We got paid, so yeah, it's
- 1:09looking up, Things are looking up.
- 1:12Once February arrives, then you're on the home stretch.
- 1:16Well, we still have another month of dark mornings, but
- 1:19we're getting there. And I'll go to Dean, bring DNM
- 1:24because Owen's just caught glance to the agenda and said
- 1:27who on earth of the Perth scorchers?
- 1:29So maybe the Western Australian man himself can add some color
- 1:33to that question. I can, it's WA slash Perth's
- 1:39local cricket team. So I think there's an 8 team
- 1:42competition, national competition in the Big Bash or
- 1:45T20 referred to the Big Bash here.
- 1:48So T20 cricket, so very short form cricket and Perth is had a
- 1:54rich history. I think there's this is season
- 1:5715 of the Big Bash League and the Scorchers have been in the
- 2:01final. I think it was the 9th time and
- 2:03this is their 6th win, so they won last night.
- 2:06So yeah, wild, wild scenes in Perth.
- 2:11Kind of reasoning for me sitting here feeling rather tired
- 2:15because managed to snag a couple of tickets and drank a couple of
- 2:19glasses of wine that had brought back from Margaret River.
- 2:22So it was good fun now. Che big weekend for you.
- 2:27I'll be glad glad to see the back of this as fun as it was
- 2:30having my mate over. I'm very much looking forward to
- 2:33getting back into routine. Bit of a detox.
- 2:36Yeah, could call it that. And then before just coming back
- 2:39into the apartment, because we're in the city, there was a
- 2:42couple of the Sydney Sixers team getting into a taxi and I was
- 2:46tempted to give them a snarky comment but couldn't think of 1.
- 2:50And he probably would have just embarrassed Meeks.
- 2:52Didn't really know too much about them.
- 2:54They so they had a couple of the players that played in the
- 2:58Ashes, said Steve Smith and Mitchell Stark.
- 3:00That played for the Sixers. So they're pretty stacked team,
- 3:03but not stacked enough. Yeah, when Smiths were hit,
- 3:07fell, that was definitely the biggest cheer the night, Yeah.
- 3:11It's good to see Perks doing good on the sporting front as
- 3:15they're only shit at the AFL aren't they?
- 3:18Yeah. I mean, yeah, we've not been,
- 3:21we've not had much to cheer about on that front in years.
- 3:24But our men's basketball team and cricket team are good, so
- 3:31and we're pretty good at just getting around something that's
- 3:33doing well. Hence, we're all cricket fans at
- 3:35the minute. And how are you doing on this
- 3:38actual, rather bizarrely cold Sunday?
- 3:42But it feels like Sunday. But it's definitely Monday feels
- 3:45like Sunday because it's public holiday.
- 3:47I'm nervous to comment too much after Owens intro with his
- 3:50weather but. I'm just looking up the forecast
- 3:53here in Ireland and if you can see it is just rain, rain, rain,
- 3:59rain, rain for the next week. 100% chance of rain, Yeah.
- 4:06So for context, it's it's cold here in Perth and it's currently
- 4:1219°. In Ireland right now it's
- 4:17actually 7. Feels like -4.
- 4:19Yeah, how can it feel 11° cool as it windy as well.
- 4:23It's windy as fuck. Yeah, it's shit.
- 4:26And the rain. Now, yeah, the kids all had
- 4:30their like, long sleeve pages on where they're not accustomed to
- 4:34the slightest bit of cool weather here in Perth.
- 4:36So it was blazing hot during the middle of the week, but it has
- 4:39been a bit cool, unseasonably cool for for Perth weather the
- 4:43past few days. Yeah, well, I'm glad you're able
- 4:46to join us, given you've been crabbing in in the open waters
- 4:51down South, doing a dance with the sharks.
- 4:55Yeah, I managed to get AI, was a bit lucky.
- 4:57I was down South with another couple with their kids.
- 5:00But I got kicked out of the car on the freeway, Mitchell Freeway
- 5:04yesterday and jumped in in with a mate and we toddled over to to
- 5:09Mandra for a bit of R&R ourselves.
- 5:12It was good. Do you bring any crabs back?
- 5:16I did, I bought back a what would, what most people would
- 5:20think would feed a, you know, a few families, but they didn't
- 5:25get beyond my dad, who's an absolute crab fiend.
- 5:28So he's lit. They've just left all crabs in
- 5:34their in their bellies. So went to a good home, that's
- 5:38for sure. That's good, right?
- 5:42Then let's get to the running elements of this show.
- 5:45We've got a bit to get through the the indoor season in the US
- 5:48has been going a bit crazy and plenty of Australians involved
- 5:53in the action too, as well as English men and women and Irish
- 5:57men in fact. So there was a meet over in
- 6:02Virginia, I think this was on Friday night, the Hockey
- 6:04Invitational. There was then on Saturday in
- 6:09Boston there was an New Balance Indoor Grand Prix and Owen's got
- 6:14a set of results coming from there.
- 6:16I attempt this rainy. Rainy.
- 6:20Rohini. There's a five mile road race,
- 6:22yeah, in Rohini. It's be a fairly big one here in
- 6:24Ireland. Do you want to talk about that
- 6:27one first? Yeah, go for it.
- 6:30And so this happened normally races in Ireland, they're on
- 6:34like let's say 10 or 11:00 and this one for reason on at 3:00
- 6:39Sunday afternoon. So it's one of the biggest Rd.
- 6:43races in the Irish like sort of calendar year.
- 6:45And it was won by Jonas Stafford, who ran 23 O 8 and
- 6:51that was a Sprint finish where Colin Rooney who ran 2310 and
- 6:56just for you, Dean, Colin Rooney is like 42.
- 6:59So there's still life in your left.
- 7:02And then third was you Armstrong, who ran 2327.
- 7:08So good race, really fast times, and it wouldn't be the fastest
- 7:12of courses. And on the women's side, the
- 7:15winner was Michelle Finn, who ran 2635.
- 7:19Second was Faye Darvin, who ran 27-O four.
- 7:24And third was Marie McGee, who ran 27 O 4 again.
- 7:29Yeah, so very, very, very tight race on both sides.
- 7:34But yeah, good running from the boys.
- 7:36Like Jonas Stafford would have been well up there in national
- 7:40cross country and so was Colin Rooney, Andrew Armstrong, Q
- 7:43Armstrong came like 7th, so he just missed out on the team.
- 7:45Jonas Stafford would have wait low.
- 7:47We represented Ireland. But yeah, good running.
- 7:52Have you done this one before? I don't know, years ago and let
- 7:59me just try and find the result because that'll be actually
- 8:02funny. Oh shit, was I?
- 8:06You carry on. I'm gonna pull up for this.
- 8:08I noticed a couple of the people in the results had like general
- 8:11bib numbers and then a few had like single digits.
- 8:14Is there like an elite and then open?
- 8:17No, I think it's just no, no, I don't think so.
- 8:20OK. Would they all those lot be
- 8:24based out of Ireland? Then they wouldn't be like
- 8:26overseas athletes or anything. Not all Irish here.
- 8:30All Irish. Just like very high level
- 8:34domestic but just below perhaps national team.
- 8:37Well, you said he'd be on the team, maybe.
- 8:41If you know, these would be like really, really good, these be up
- 8:43there with the best in the country.
- 8:46It's just like Aston G Day would have won a couple of years back.
- 8:50Like there's I think it's a bit of money behind it.
- 8:55Oh, here we go. In 2023 I ran 2537.
- 9:02Yeah, OK. So 2 1/2 minutes.
- 9:06I'm the winner of that year run at 2353.
- 9:11Oh, OK, yeah. So I wanted this year. 23/08/20.
- 9:16308, yeah, yeah, OK. Yeah.
- 9:17So it's miles off basically. What place did that go?
- 9:22Yeah. It got me 26th.
- 9:29And is that one within striking distance of you or would you
- 9:32have had to travel to that? Where?
- 9:33Where is it? No, I'm pretty lucky that was in
- 9:35Dublin, so it'd be like half an hour drive for me.
- 9:39So those clubs that are listed next to the people there, are
- 9:42they like largely Dublin based clubs, obviously Dublin City
- 9:45Harriers and. People from all around the
- 9:49country like that Levale, that's Cork and UCD is like a cut that
- 9:54Jonas effort, like he's runs with the college team.
- 9:57So he'd be on scholarship with UCD and but no people from all
- 10:01around Ireland because like we're a tiny country.
- 10:05So it's actually possible to just hop in a carrier drive for
- 10:07three hours and you're on the other side of the country.
- 10:10So it's sort of reachable for everyone.
- 10:14And what did you raise any of these guys at National?
- 10:16Cross, Yeah. So I'll share the National Cross
- 10:21results up. So you reckon Dean needs to be
- 10:24reaching out to this calm Rooney guy?
- 10:27Seeing what he's doing, yeah. I did say he's the only one
- 10:34that's got an age category other than I think men's and women's
- 10:38are just Ms. and FS and his M40. So it's.
- 10:42Savage going though. Great going and.
- 10:47So Hugh Armstrong came seventh, Jonas Stafford came eight and
- 10:53Colin Rooney came 15th on the men's and then let me try and
- 10:58find the women's and. That the men's result is like
- 11:03253 per K average for the five. Mile Gee whiz.
- 11:09And Michelle Finn came 11 to national cross country.
- 11:14I'm trying to find the other girls.
- 11:16I can't really find the other girls.
- 11:17They were a bit down. But Michelle Finn would have
- 11:20represented Ireland as well. Like she's a stable and Irish
- 11:22running. No, that's good.
- 11:25Thanks for sharing that. Love Len about the domestic
- 11:27scene over there in Ireland. Over to the US then I guess.
- 11:35So there was there was a small ish meet in Blacksburg, VA this
- 11:40hokey Invitational and why it's relevant is because the Olympic
- 11:45and world champion Carl Hocker and his teammate Cupertier
- 11:49friend of the show were running they were running a 2000 meters
- 11:53there. So surprise surprise, those two
- 11:56have finished one and two. Carl Hawker's won in 452.92 and
- 12:02Cooper Tears finished second just two seconds back in 454.74.
- 12:08And that was actually a national record from Carl Hawker there.
- 12:12Although be it, as we find out later on, it was a short lived
- 12:15national record, but he took that at the time from Bernard
- 12:18Lagat and that was actually standing from 2014.
- 12:23So 2000 meters. Bit of a random distance, but
- 12:27clearly it kind of fits those like middle distance guys quite
- 12:31well who flipped between the 1500 meters and the 5K as a bit
- 12:36of a low pressure season opener. I guess the guy who's in 3rd,
- 12:40George Cusi, he's a, he's a British athlete, He ran 457,
- 12:45which also took the British record for a short period.
- 12:50Would generally, I tell you, like American running would give
- 12:54like bonuses if you break a world record, would call Hawker
- 12:58and would he still get the bonus or what do you think?
- 13:03Or would it just be? I think so.
- 13:07Yeah, he still got to, even though it lasted like a couple
- 13:09of hours. Well, because isn't it written
- 13:11into their contracts? I thought like remember the is
- 13:15arm grun's comments about running a European record and he
- 13:19indicated like a stack of cash like I think their shoe
- 13:22contracts. Are.
- 13:24Such that they get money if they break a record.
- 13:27So the fact that it gets broken the next day, I mean, it's
- 13:31actually genius. If you think it's going to go
- 13:32the next day and you're not the best chance to win that race,
- 13:36why not run the day before and pocket the money?
- 13:39Yeah, it's like you're equal to. Did he?
- 13:44Well, he ran yeah, 454.74, and Legat's record was 454.74.
- 13:52Oh, don't you think? And this is we'll talk about
- 13:56Hobbs Kessler later, but like, both of those guys finished
- 14:00fourth and 5th in their US trials last year at the world
- 14:04champs. And like, if it wasn't for the
- 14:06fact that the US is on such a, a tear, a Cooper tear, then these
- 14:12guys would be getting a lot more recognition than what they'd
- 14:15they are right now. Like he's literally run the like
- 14:18he literally ran an American record not really spoken about
- 14:22and then definitely not spoken about 24 hours later.
- 14:26That's yeah, it goes on the radar on, on the comments about
- 14:31the bonus in the contract and stuff.
- 14:34I'd say yes, definitely, But maybe just think random
- 14:38distances like 2000 meters maybe wasted slightly less.
- 14:42I'm sure the brands will be all over that.
- 14:46So that was pretty much the only thing going on there, I think of
- 14:51relevance to us. But yeah, George Cusi.
- 14:56That's the fastest collision ever to run in A2 Ki think isn't
- 14:59it? The George Cusi guy.
- 15:03Yeah, pretty sure I read that somewhere.
- 15:07Did you see who else? I don't know if you saw the when
- 15:10Bernard Legat ran his time, did you see who was just behind him
- 15:17in that race? Just a side note.
- 15:21Mantram, Cam Levins. Cam Levins Yeah, so doing triple
- 15:29days yet somehow running 455 for 2K, he's pretty impressive.
- 15:37But yeah, that was back when he was at his at his track best in
- 15:412014. He's got the range, yes.
- 15:47So that would have temporarily put Cole into 5th on the all
- 15:54time list, knocking off Eamon Colt Coghlan of Ireland.
- 16:00Does that name mean anything to you?
- 16:02Coghlan? Yeah.
- 16:04Ireland have the world record for the four by a mile.
- 16:09That's right. You remember the coffee cup guys
- 16:12took it, I think took a shot at that a few years ago.
- 16:15Yeah, it didn't stand a chance that that's like that's and
- 16:17that's such an old record as well, and it's still standing
- 16:19today, which. Wasn't it, wasn't it pretty
- 16:22stacked? Like, wasn't it like the four
- 16:25guys that were doing it? We're all pretty.
- 16:27Off the wrong believe, yeah, the best 4 runner yeah, probably to
- 16:30this day that I have ever produced.
- 16:32Yeah. Wonder wonder what their average
- 16:35mile split was. Take it on definitely so far.
- 16:40From back in the day as well. Yeah.
- 16:44Moving on then whilst you dig that out, we'll go to Boston,
- 16:47the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix because Cam Myers, Andrew
- 16:51Coskren and Nick Griggs were all starting in the same starting
- 16:54line up in the 3000 meters in the indoor field here.
- 16:59So Cam Myers ran a new national record to take the win in a
- 17:03blistering 727.57 out kicking Graham Blanks who led large
- 17:10parts of the race. He ended up finishing third and
- 17:13beating Graham Blanks with a kind of a quick close in
- 17:17trademark style was Andrew Costkren in 730.97.
- 17:22It's funny because when we talked about this last week, oh
- 17:28and obviously fancy Costco, and I mentioned perhaps like what
- 17:31blanks be in the mix, but in all honesty, I didn't see Cam Meyers
- 17:36being like at their level and he just proved that he'd like it,
- 17:41dusted them easily. But what was just thoughts?
- 17:46Yeah, even the way the race was run, like blanks start pushing
- 17:50from like a cupboard out to try and take the sting out of them
- 17:52boys. Bought a Costco, would be pretty
- 17:57strong. But obviously so is Cam Myers.
- 17:59Like even like his 10K cross country in Canberra, like that
- 18:04shows how strong he is. And then just going for the mile
- 18:08last week, like he's just the perfect mix.
- 18:12But yeah, like 728 is just not so fast.
- 18:18He feels like he's validating the decision to whatever the
- 18:23insurance and outs were, but in terms of his track build,
- 18:26getting into these these races and building a, you know,
- 18:30building nicely as any through the indoor season.
- 18:35Yeah, it it suggests he's definitely worth more than his
- 18:39performance at the World Champs last year, like not getting out
- 18:42of the heats and stuff. Hopefully he won't.
- 18:45He won't face that scenario again.
- 18:48Well, yeah, and I mean, that's a good, I mean, that's a good
- 18:50reflection given because Andrew, like Cosgren was made it into
- 18:57that final, right? So he he really measured his
- 18:59build and he shared with you on that.
- 19:01His goal was really just to be consistent and not overdo it and
- 19:05measure his effort to get into that final.
- 19:07So for Cam to beat him and judge the judge the race very well as
- 19:12well, didn't they? I don't know.
- 19:15The the race was a lot of fun because that Graham blanks.
- 19:17That's not the first time you see him.
- 19:19Just once the pacemaker drops, be very aggressive and it just
- 19:24makes for such an exciting race. And then Cam was so measured,
- 19:28like so experienced with in terms of effort distribution
- 19:31that he timed his run so well. And then cosgroen probably what
- 19:35to see at the quickest close of the lot too, but just didn't
- 19:37have enough. There wasn't enough time.
- 19:41So powerful as well, though the way he moved past blanks wasn't
- 19:44it. It wasn't like a last minute
- 19:46kick, it was like a decisive well I've physically got another
- 19:50gear to you here so it doesn't really matter.
- 19:53Yeah, and it was still a lot 2 laps to go when he did that and
- 19:56you think you might just tuck in to try and get the win, but he
- 20:00was still pushing for the time. What's interesting when last
- 20:05week we spoke about his decision to not do worlds and stuff, and
- 20:08you just touched on it there, the way he's mapping out his
- 20:14indoor season this year or the start of it, because we spoke
- 20:17about that as well. He'd publicly stated his races
- 20:21on Strava is the same sort of trajectory that he took last
- 20:24year. So he started with a mile.
- 20:28Last year he opened with 353 and this year in Washington the
- 20:33other week he ran 349, so 4 seconds faster.
- 20:37Then he ran a 3000 meters. Last year he ran 733.
- 20:42This year at this meet we're talking about now in Boston,
- 20:45he's just ran a national record 727, six seconds faster.
- 20:50And then he went to Melrose and ran the mile there and ran a
- 20:53national record 347. So what's he going to do this
- 20:58year at Melrose? World record 342.
- 21:06It's very cool because I think when someone really young runs
- 21:10really fast that people might comment that it it every your
- 21:17fitness, it's harder and harder the fitter you get to get fitter
- 21:20again. And so it's trying to improve
- 21:22when you're already very good and a lot of people might
- 21:25develop earlier than other people, so you're not sure if
- 21:29the development's going to keep coming.
- 21:31So it's very exciting when you sit improving.
- 21:35Let's hope his moustache keeps developing because it is not at
- 21:38the moment he really needs. Some more.
- 21:41He needs some more hair there. There's not much of them always
- 21:44there. No.
- 21:47I thank God he's going to mention that last week, but I
- 21:50was not confident enough that I'd seen something.
- 21:54Something there, something just a shadow.
- 21:59Yeah, a cat. A gummy bear might lick that one
- 22:02off. Well, he's got he's got 20 years
- 22:07worth of growth to grow the men's ISMO.
- 22:12Ouch. That's true though.
- 22:15Right, so Next up, I think the way the stream was going, it was
- 22:19kind of it was a bit weird, wasn't it?
- 22:21It was like the coverage was unbelievable.
- 22:23But then it would it would show one race live and then it would
- 22:25cut to coverage and say like this happened earlier and then
- 22:29they would kind of semi commentate on it, but from like
- 22:33they obviously had watched the race.
- 22:36But yeah, tell us about the 600 meters own, because I think this
- 22:39is one for you. Yeah, so there was 5 in the
- 22:44race, Kimmy Phillips, Donovan Brazier, Bryce Hoppel and then
- 22:48Maheed Yanori and then the sort of Chuck and big names are done
- 22:53from Brazier, Bryce Hoppel and like they're just the one of the
- 22:57biggest names in American running.
- 22:59So immediately your money's on one of them two, but umm, so it
- 23:04went up. So it's 3 laps of the indoor
- 23:06track and this the fifth guy went off so hard and he ran like
- 23:11600 meter. He ran like 300 meters and then
- 23:14just dropped out. And I don't he wasn't like
- 23:17pacing around. That's what I don't know why
- 23:18he's doing. He can jump that, whatever.
- 23:20It was just so bizarre. I don't know if he was a
- 23:23pacemaker. I think he was just, he didn't
- 23:24get in another race and he just hopped in that one.
- 23:26I don't know. It was really weird.
- 23:29Because the commentators didn't call him like he was a
- 23:31pacemaker. But my daughter anyway.
- 23:36And I think that, yeah, Mehdi, you know, he's a college kid.
- 23:40So he sort of took it out. And then it was Donovan Brazer,
- 23:43Bryce Hopper and Kimmy Phillips. And I think until, like I said,
- 23:48it was like 150, maybe 100 meters to go along the back
- 23:53straight, came with Phillips, made a massive move and the boys
- 23:57just couldn't go with him. So yeah, Kim Mcphillips ended up
- 24:00running 11637 to run a PV and just leave Donovan Brazer and
- 24:05Bryce Apple just wailing in the back.
- 24:07So crazy turn of speed from Kim Mcphillips.
- 24:10And yeah, be so interesting to see what he does during the
- 24:15year. Like his splits were for the 1st
- 24:16200-2424 high. His next 200 split was 50.8, so
- 24:2326 seconds. And then he finished in 25
- 24:26second 200, which is just so fast.
- 24:32So yeah, I'd be interesting to see how he goes in the in the
- 24:34world and all that sort of stuff.
- 24:36Is he? With the college at the minute
- 24:40or what's his back background? He's like he was actually I
- 24:46think he ran what DCU or College in Dublin?
- 24:50I'm not 100% sure but he's been like basically a pro runner.
- 24:55Malia is a pro now but like. He was with the With the Shoe
- 25:00brand over there. Or he's never added us.
- 25:02He will always has sort of a link when I asked like his coach
- 25:05is his coach is Joe Ryan, who is the head coach of the college
- 25:11DCU. So that he's not important that
- 25:14together. And he's not affiliated though
- 25:17with any, like he's not got an American affiliation.
- 25:19So he's him. He's like Cam and he's just come
- 25:22over to race the Grand Prix. Yeah, but he got in it because
- 25:30of his world champion performance last year.
- 25:33Like what? I thought he wouldn't have gone
- 25:34near this one. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 25:38He made that ironically look like men against boys, although
- 25:41he was the boy against Donovan Braziers like the.
- 25:46Yeah, those two scalps are pretty outrageous, right?
- 25:49Crazy. What are they both 141 guys?
- 25:55I mean, albeit that he's a 142 guy, but.
- 25:59I'm keen he would have went to College in UCD, which is
- 26:03basically the other side of Dublin from DCU, yeah, but yeah.
- 26:09So his coach would have been the DCU coach.
- 26:13Yeah, like when he made that move, they literally could do
- 26:16nothing about it. They were racing for second.
- 26:18Literally they they were about 10-20 yards back when they and
- 26:22genuinely racing each other to the line for 2nd.
- 26:26They didn't stand a chance. There was a women's 1500 meters
- 26:31then, so the star I guess on paper in this one was Sinclair
- 26:35Johnson, the the homegrown girl of the US and then also of
- 26:40interest was Sarah Billings from Australia was over.
- 26:44The race was won by Kenya's Dorca Savoy in four O 1.22.
- 26:49Sinclair Johnson got second, four O 1.3.
- 26:53Polish lady Claudia Kasimerska got third in a national record
- 26:57four O 178. And then Sarah Billings was
- 26:59fourth, four O 179. So very closely packed together
- 27:03there. One thing, what was interesting,
- 27:07or this one, the commentators were talking about how Sinclair
- 27:10Johnson had switched recently from Nike or Nike to Hoka.
- 27:15And it just made me think about the conversations we've been
- 27:18having recently. We seem to be talking about
- 27:20Hoka, don't we? And perhaps their shoes and like
- 27:23their growing influence. So, I mean, Sinclair Johnson's a
- 27:26bit of a star girl over there and Nike's like the real deal,
- 27:30isn't it? So to be able to snatch a star
- 27:33from Nike is like a a big coup, really.
- 27:37And I think when you're at that point and like that, like every,
- 27:42I mean, what's this race decided by 8 hundredths of a second?
- 27:45If you're not comfortable in the footwear you're running in,
- 27:49you're not going to switch despite the extra bit of
- 27:53monetary incentive. So you suspect the the the shoes
- 27:56are stacking up, which is cool, but like she.
- 27:59She was with Nike for nine years apparently, or something like
- 28:01that, which is such a long time, so I feel like I could
- 28:04definitely give her a nice. Oh, that would paycheck but but
- 28:10but but you wouldn't do it if you then get a run in, you know,
- 28:13lifeless, lifeless shit. So but I did notice on socials
- 28:21that we clipped the snippet of someone predicting the winner of
- 28:25this of this race. So.
- 28:31Good work on the Instagram. And so you mentioned that we did
- 28:39talk and we did. And I did talk about Sinclair
- 28:41Johnson in the lead up because she's been winning everything.
- 28:45But you'd sort of played down the fact that Dorcas employee
- 28:49was maybe 1 of the lesser known or a bit of a rough Erasmus
- 28:54perhaps. You put it last week, Ryan, but
- 28:57was she world champion silver medallist over this distance?
- 29:03Yeah, I was just had those ongoing conversations with their
- 29:07agent and stuff in the background and 9 new shoes in
- 29:09shape, so just cashed it in. Look forward to who's our agent,
- 29:15who's our agent? You put me in touch with them,
- 29:17actually. It was on your watch list.
- 29:23Really. Oh no, no, I believe we.
- 29:30Yeah, maybe we could even backpedal slightly, but I
- 29:35thought she trains with a group over in America.
- 29:40Yeah, to be honest with you, I don't actually know that much
- 29:42about. Her.
- 29:45Her name was familiar. And then in the monks I know,
- 29:49obviously Sinclair Johnson was like the standout.
- 29:52And then her name rang a bell for some reason.
- 29:54So you asked me for a roughy and I just plucked one out.
- 29:58Oh, there you go. All right.
- 30:02I don't think I was going to go for the Lithuanian athlete
- 30:05anyway. Sorry to any Lithuanian
- 30:07listeners. Now then, Fast forward to the
- 30:12men's 2000 meters. So hold that contextual results
- 30:17of Carl Hocher and Cooper Tier from 24 hours prior in the back
- 30:22of your minds when you've got Grant Fisher, Jake Whiteman,
- 30:27Hobbs Kesler, whoever else was in this bloody field.
- 30:30It was pretty stacked standing on another 2000 metre start line
- 30:35to be honest. This way this race is was wide
- 30:38open in terms of like before the gun goes off and it was ends up
- 30:44being worn by Hobbs Kessler in a new world record of 448.79.
- 30:50Absolutely taking care of Grant Fisher, the current Z 3005
- 30:55thousand metre world record holder on the indoor from last
- 30:59year 44948 Grant ran. But the way that Kezler moved
- 31:05away from him again, it was just done with so much decisiveness.
- 31:11And I don't know if you see in his post race interview where he
- 31:15talks about exploding rather than squeezing.
- 31:19And the guy who's asking him the question like kind of picks up
- 31:22on it. And he's like, like, what does
- 31:24that feel like when you're when like you want to go there and
- 31:28your body responds And he's just like on an absolute hype Kesla.
- 31:32So yeah, what do you guys reckon?
- 31:37I was just super chuffed. I think we spoke about this a
- 31:40little bit off air, but like, I feel like Hobbs, Kessler and
- 31:46Cooper tier aren't are running so well, but aren't necessarily
- 31:50getting all the plaudits that some of the other guys are
- 31:52getting and the opportunities. And so when you see someone
- 31:54that's a bit in the background and because he ran so well,
- 31:58remember he dubbed board at Tokyo in the 8 and 1500 when
- 32:01you're super young and you're just like so excited for him and
- 32:04because he's such a nice, likeable person.
- 32:07He had, they had a great conversation with him on the
- 32:09Coffee Club podcast, I think, didn't they?
- 32:12Everyone. And so, yeah, wait.
- 32:14And so, you know, he's sort of been a bit down and out to a
- 32:18degree and see, and you could see just how excited he was when
- 32:21he crossed the finish line. And to have his own bit of
- 32:24history being a world record. It was, yeah.
- 32:27I don't know what's the highlight for me.
- 32:30This is Second World record in the Mile world record as well.
- 32:33Has he? He's had the road mile world
- 32:36record. I'm pretty sure you've got Kevin
- 32:37Nelson. Yes.
- 32:39Was that the inaugural? Yeah, the first one, yeah, yeah.
- 32:45I know this, the field here is probably better and deeper than
- 32:48the one that Colin Cooper ran in, but he's run 4 seconds
- 32:52quicker than what Carl Hawker ran as well, which is like a
- 32:56decent margin isn't it? Yes, huge.
- 33:01But I'm going to say the one called Hawker was in like that
- 33:06wasn't even on anyone's like, radar that meet, like, this meet
- 33:09was built up. Grant Fisher was going to go out
- 33:12really hard as it is. So it was sort of set up for,
- 33:15like a record, whereas Jordan, I don't think, wasn't as much.
- 33:19Yeah. And.
- 33:20He literally had the perfect sit of the race in there.
- 33:23Like, in terms of, yeah, he just sat on him until, what, a
- 33:26hundred, 150 minutes to go and kicked Like it was if you had
- 33:30the capacity to hang, then it was the perfect, perfectly timed
- 33:36race. And both Grant Fisher and Grand
- 33:39Blancs are the type of guys that they don't seem to have the best
- 33:42turn of speed. They're just from the grind
- 33:44guys, you know? And so, if you're fit enough,
- 33:47they'd make for the perfect pacesetter.
- 33:51It seems to be becoming increasingly less relevant.
- 33:54Like being, well, no, this kind of contradicts itself.
- 33:58But like Fisher and Blanks, their ability to like squeeze
- 34:03the race out like Jacob does as well, like the guys who can
- 34:08close and can kick. They're they're just leveling up
- 34:11their fitness to be able to not get dropped and then they just
- 34:15kick past them. Yeah, I think you either need to
- 34:18be so clearly fitter or you're in trouble because the guys that
- 34:23can hang with will just close out, you know, close over the
- 34:27top of you. Which is maybe a good segue to
- 34:29comment on Jack Whiteman, who maybe we foreshadowed slightly.
- 34:34You know, he's tends to cheat it peak for championship racing.
- 34:36So like he ran, he's to like 453, he's flying.
- 34:40But he was he was never really in it, was he?
- 34:45Now the race kind of split, didn't it?
- 34:48He's ended up actually run rewrite in the British record
- 34:51books though on the back of George Cusi running that 457 on
- 34:54Fridays. Then again took another 4
- 34:56seconds off the British record. Bit of a.
- 35:00He dropped off. He dropped off pretty early.
- 35:02I think he was going to, like drop way back, but he must have
- 35:05held it together fair bit. And you have to take into
- 35:08account theater boys were going out with record pace.
- 35:10So sure, probably be happy with that, yeah.
- 35:13And it was no slouch, right? The guys that were ahead of him,
- 35:16like, was it Pakili's, Pakili's last World record?
- 35:19Did I see that? Is that right?
- 35:20Yeah, it was. Poor guy.
- 35:24Yeah, he's irrelevant now. Dean, do you want to talk about
- 35:29this women's 3000 meters? Because I know we had a better
- 35:33chatter on this one last week as well.
- 35:34And there's a couple of your country women in here.
- 35:38Yeah. So to recap the results, the
- 35:41winner was at least Saint Pierre in 82654.
- 35:48Second was Linden Hall in 8/27/03 and 3rd and a little
- 35:55bit, surprisingly, a bit bit of a ways off was just how in
- 35:5983603. And then yeah, 4th and 5th, just
- 36:04quickly 838 for Emily McKay and Hannah Nuttall.
- 36:12But yeah, a little bit a little bit surprising in in a couple of
- 36:17respects. But we did foreshadow that Ellie
- 36:21Saint Pierre tends to run well in indoors, but we weren't
- 36:30really sure of her shape because we'll be right in thinking that
- 36:34she's recently been on recently had leave for for for a child.
- 36:42Maternity leave, yeah. I was looking for maternity
- 36:45leave. I don't know, does it apply in
- 36:47in professional sporting context?
- 36:51But but yeah, obviously she's returned very well to form.
- 36:58But yeah, perhaps Jess Hull was a bit surprising to be looking
- 37:04so comfy. But then, like, I don't know,
- 37:07Linden's race was it 2 weeks ago was pretty exceptional.
- 37:11And then in the 8 bytes, the four by 2K.
- 37:15But then to sort of to carry that form into this was, yeah,
- 37:20pretty phenomenal. Yeah, because whenever there's
- 37:25say, if Linden ran this race and Jess wasn't there, you would be
- 37:28very impressed. But you don't almost have that
- 37:30like direct comparison or measurements.
- 37:33But then when the two of them are side by side and you're
- 37:35like, shit, she beat Jess Hall by 9 seconds.
- 37:39And. But to be fair, it looked as
- 37:41though like it was Jess's undoing of herself rather than
- 37:46like as good of a run as Lyndon had.
- 37:48It was clear that Jess kind of fell off the pace after
- 37:51attempting to take it on when the pacemaker dropped off,
- 37:54wasn't it? She was the one like kind of
- 37:56driving it. And those two girls were sitting
- 37:58on her and at a point Lyndon was almost dropped off the back,
- 38:02wasn't she? There was like a meter or Two's
- 38:04gap and then I think Jess slowed, which allowed Lyndon to
- 38:08reattach. And then, yeah, just like out of
- 38:11nowhere almost, it just looks like her legs had just gone from
- 38:15underneath her and that we've seen that happen.
- 38:18I can't remember which Diamond League it was last year.
- 38:20I remember 1 towards the back end of the year and she got like
- 38:23done on the line and then it almost happened again.
- 38:27So yes, I mean, she was clearly trying to peek for a couple of
- 38:31weeks back at world cross country.
- 38:32And maybe this is just one race too far.
- 38:34She needs to go back into some base training or something.
- 38:37But I'm no expert, I'm just offering critical opinion.
- 38:43To be honest, it's her first bad race in how long?
- 38:45Like you're allowed to have an off day, so I wouldn't be
- 38:48reading too much into it. Yeah.
- 38:51And probably just a bit of a comment of just how good Linda's
- 38:54race was really, like you say, probably a bit of an off day,
- 38:58but 826 like, and I think you mentioned in the it's mentioned
- 39:03in our our notes, But like, I remember when is it Georgia
- 39:08Griffith when she ran out 24 was not not that long ago.
- 39:13And that was spoken about. That was was that last year in
- 39:16the lead up to the world champs? And that was quite an impressive
- 39:19run. So to be running, I am only a
- 39:23couple of seconds slower on an indoor track, which you have to
- 39:26do double the lap. So it's twice the amount of
- 39:28turns which is made, which is meant to be slower than outdoors
- 39:33is. It's pretty, pretty great going.
- 39:37Yeah, second fastest Aussie indoors behind only chess's run.
- 39:42Or then if you include outdoors times as well, it's third
- 39:46fastest with including that George's run.
- 39:48So yeah, remarkably fast was at 240 nines.
- 39:56And when are when are world champs coming up?
- 40:01I think it's March in Poland, so it's it's a bit of a drag away
- 40:06considering like the get going now with the race and you.
- 40:10Yeah, I thought it was normally a bit sooner than sooner in the
- 40:13past and I've had it, but hopefully a few few Aussies had
- 40:19over for it that are in form and I carry that form into that.
- 40:23The last race here was a bit shorter.
- 40:27It was an 800 meters for the men and this one was all built
- 40:33around Josh Howie. It was quite clear, I think he's
- 40:36he stated himself in the lead up to this very boldly that he was
- 40:39going for another indoor world record having already taken the
- 40:43600 meter one in in December. And what's funny or quite ironic
- 40:49is going into this, Josh Howey is the reigning 800 meters world
- 40:54indoor champion from earlier last year.
- 40:56And then obviously we know how his outdoor season played out.
- 40:59He didn't end up making the team so given he's ran that 600 metre
- 41:04world record a couple a month or so ago, he's clearly come back
- 41:08with the the bit between his teeth and I think he's sacked.
- 41:12I don't know about sack, but he's swapped his coach, he's got
- 41:15a new coach in and he's doing everything his way.
- 41:18So clearly not cutting any corners and that's led to he did
- 41:21get the world record. I think he's ran 142.5, think
- 41:26the previous world record was at .67 or something like that.
- 41:30Yeah. Sometimes that is to beat the
- 41:34Polish guy in second who was 2 seconds back and almost
- 41:39irrelevant really in the race. And then there was a Dutch guy
- 41:43who also ran a national record in 144.
- 41:46But yeah, what was your observations on how, how, how he
- 41:49done this? He would have won the 600 meter
- 41:53race as well with his 600 meter split in this.
- 41:57So yeah, he was just a man on a mission.
- 42:04So he got 11619. Yeah, he's one by 2/10.
- 42:10Wow. Yeah, so.
- 42:12He was man on a. Mission, I mean, I don't like
- 42:17that's phenomenal. And the fact that he called it
- 42:20like called his shot like there was content.
- 42:23I think do we speak about it last week that there was like
- 42:25some content on the on the Internet, like a YouTube series.
- 42:30Do you ever watch? Is it total running productions?
- 42:32Is that what it's called that's on there?
- 42:34And they sometimes it's like a voiceover and they sort of
- 42:38comment on running news and those sorts of things.
- 42:39They're like 10 minute YouTube clips.
- 42:42But they mentioned that, yeah, he's having a shot at this world
- 42:47record. And like, it's not a, you know,
- 42:49we talk about maybe some of these indoor records or soft
- 42:53records, like some of them might rarely run distances.
- 42:56So therefore not that if they're not raced that often and they're
- 43:00not big races, then they're not going to be that fast.
- 43:03Whereas this is like I remember watching this video on YouTube
- 43:07of when this Wilson Kipp Couture initially ran out and like him
- 43:13running, blasting around that indoor track like it's like one
- 43:17of them all well well known records.
- 43:20So for him to call to call it ahead of time and to also split
- 43:25with his coach. Remember, he was being coached,
- 43:26wasn't he being coached by Justin Rinaldi, the Aussie
- 43:29coach? And he and he was a bit public
- 43:31in saying like, I want to go harder.
- 43:34And people are like, this guy's just going to burn out.
- 43:37And he's he's obviously ripping workouts, feeling fast and then
- 43:41backing it up by rat by taking down a very fast record.
- 43:45It's pretty cool. I'm.
- 43:48Sorry, January. I don't feel laughed.
- 43:53He's just saying he's gonna and look and he did last year,
- 43:56right. That was the that was a bit of a
- 43:58knock was that he was fit early in the season and then he
- 44:03didn't, he was not informed come the US trials, couldn't run his
- 44:09way through the Diamond League final, could he, to get that
- 44:11golden ticket and therefore didn't get to compete.
- 44:14So yeah. It was cool the way his brother
- 44:17paced him, wasn't it? I don't know how fit his brother
- 44:20is. Obviously he's very fit to be
- 44:21able to pace him halfway through this.
- 44:24But his his form, he looked like he's trying a hell of a lot
- 44:28harder than Josh. I don't know if you've seen it.
- 44:32And am I right in thinking are these are guys with the
- 44:34athletics track at home? Yeah.
- 44:38Yeah, it's a joke. I get a life.
- 44:46Says US sitting here talking about him.
- 44:50Imagine the workouts those two would have done on that track.
- 44:53Like if the if one of them's able to pace the other one to a
- 44:56world record. Like that's not.
- 44:57Killed each other. Imagine and like why is it
- 45:01culturally acceptable to have like a tennis court in your
- 45:04backyard, but you can't have a, you know, an indoor or outdoor
- 45:07running track I. Think a running track is a tiny
- 45:11bit more expensive and a fridge and tennis court concrete.
- 45:18And they just had a big in that video.
- 45:19They just had like, they're like their youths just parked up on
- 45:23lane 8. Where else would you get it?
- 45:26It was pretty cool voice. Yeah, it may be culturally
- 45:33acceptable to have a tennis court, but for the the English
- 45:37and the Irish listeners, it's not culturally achievable more
- 45:41often than not. Oh, it sounds like you might
- 45:44take up half of half of Ireland. Given I'd nip down South for the
- 45:49weekend. I could have driven across
- 45:51Ireland. You definitely could have.
- 45:53You definitely could have, yeah. That's us for the results, I
- 45:58think. Doctor Sanders happened.
- 46:02So this is sort of like a lower level race that if you win the
- 46:06mile, you can get into Melrose, you can get into Melrose game.
- 46:12So two big names in this one, but it was won by Flavian sought
- 46:17from France in 354. Then second was Wes Porter run
- 46:22354. He would be a training partner
- 46:25of Adam Fogg and he actually represented America in the and
- 46:32yeah, just gone. And other noble mention.
- 46:35Well, third was Fuad Misodi from Morocco and 355 noble mentions
- 46:42were Eric Halt, he around 355, Callum Allison around 356.46.
- 46:48And that's really. And on the women's side, it was
- 46:52won by Will Matt Nelson, who ran 426.
- 46:55Second was Rachel MacArthur, who ran 426 high.
- 46:58She's gone out with Cooper Tier. And then third was Sadie
- 47:02Englehurst, who ran 427. Yeah, that's just another little
- 47:09race that's in the Armory in New York City.
- 47:15Seen that there was an 800 meter there as well which that Cooper
- 47:19look looking house. You know the 16 year old
- 47:22American kid, he won him 145 I think it was.
- 47:27Yeah, I did see that pop up on my feed.
- 47:30Was it some sort of American age group record or something like
- 47:33that? Did they say?
- 47:35Probably for for the indoors because they're on on Let's Run.
- 47:40They were kind of previewing it last week and they were giving
- 47:43him a pass mark of like 147 or 148 even.
- 47:46And so then I think 1:45 is pretty impressive.
- 47:51Which then? So he knocked out Josh Holley
- 47:55from getting a spot in at Tokyo and how he's gone 3 seconds
- 47:59faster. Yes.
- 48:03I still can't believe the fact that he and the guy that
- 48:06finished fourth at the world champs, he was ahead of 3/4 of
- 48:11the way into his race, but he is flying.
- 48:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:19Far out and they were trying to theorize how much because like
- 48:25you mentioned before, the more bends you run, perhaps the
- 48:28slower you're going to be. So naturally the indoor times
- 48:32come out a little slower than the outdoor times in the 800 at
- 48:35least they're trying to kind of like put put a number on it,
- 48:39what's it worth? And they're coming out like
- 48:41point 6.7 of a second. So basically he's in 141 high
- 48:46shape to be able to do that, which is basically world record
- 48:49shape in the outdoors. Hurry, the young lad.
- 48:53How he based on what what he's run there, but.
- 48:56Didn't he run 142 1/2? That's what I mean, yeah.
- 49:00But he's he's run 8 bends hasn't he?
- 49:03Yeah. So that's take off the like no,
- 49:06not pair bend oh for the 800 distance. 137.
- 49:12He's on something here. What are they growing on?
- 49:16How we found. Sure.
- 49:17No, You mean yet it's worth, Yeah, 6/10 percent over the
- 49:21course of the race, right. Yeah.
- 49:23Because that's really all these. Oh, what are they?
- 49:26What's Rhodesia run like 140.9 or something?
- 49:30Is it? Is it in the 1:40?
- 49:32I think he's the only one to run under 141.
- 49:36That's a bizarre record in itself, isn't it?
- 49:39It's funny though, that the indoor 800, when when you look
- 49:43at it, the record, at least that guy, the Danish guy, Wilson kept
- 49:48Katia, he'd had it for 29 years. So obviously it's a really tough
- 49:53and strong record. But the actual list of people in
- 49:57the top ten, top 20, not like everyone has kind of like had to
- 50:02go with it, which maybe that just means the record was so
- 50:07strong, people have never looked at it and thought, yeah, I'll
- 50:10have a go with that. Can I get my shoe bonus?
- 50:13I think it's people don't care about indoors, like it's a bit
- 50:17relevant for a lot of people. I think yeah, but but I think
- 50:22it's it's become back in vogue because they've statue contracts
- 50:26where you get a bonus for running for breaking a national
- 50:29record, which is, or world record, which is clever.
- 50:32And then also in the in the new era, we're running to qualifying
- 50:37step. Meeting qualifying standards is
- 50:38so hard. Some of these meets like you
- 50:40know that Boston 5K, which is like how many people run under
- 50:4513 minutes, like it's starting to become a bit more relevant
- 50:49because it's the best way to run standards.
- 50:52I have heard though that like say for the comp games that are
- 50:55coming up that filled for some silly reason Australian
- 50:59athletics, their policy is such that you don't you can't qualify
- 51:03off an indoor time. Well, they've got Boston track
- 51:07is a cheat code. Like it's got springs underneath
- 51:10you. Like it shouldn't nearly be
- 51:11allowed because they're like totally different.
- 51:13I don't know about that. I think to be to be fair though,
- 51:17there's a, there's a bit of with the indoors, it seems to be like
- 51:21hard to even harder than the outdoor races to get into.
- 51:25So like only some athletes may have access to be able to do
- 51:29them. So it does kind of level the
- 51:30playing field from a qualifying perspective a bit.
- 51:34Yeah, but I mean you can now get the same for the diamond legs.
- 51:38Yeah, true. If you're good enough, you'll be
- 51:41able to get into the races regardless if you're going to be
- 51:43qualifying. It's hot and so hard to make
- 51:46these bloody standards. So anyway.
- 51:50Oh. Owen, did you want to give us
- 51:52your training week? Right.
- 51:55OK, starting on the Monday treadmill in the morning, went
- 51:59to the gym, run just for 60 minutes, so around 13 kilometers
- 52:04for 38 that evening and just the usual double, just the usual
- 52:09easy double. I just went for 45 minutes and
- 52:11strides 12K at four 30s. So Mondays are usually around
- 52:17like 20 to 20 Yeah, rather just bank some early miles for the
- 52:21week. Tuesday was a little bit of a
- 52:25session, so went to treadmill. It was at 3 by 10 minutes off 5.
- 52:32So yeah, I think running the first two reps that are in three
- 52:37O 9 per kilometer and the set, the third Rep was around three O
- 52:407. So yeah, he got right 12K worth
- 52:44of work in there. Wednesday it was.
- 52:50I just cross trained on the Wednesday.
- 52:54Oh actually, no, that Tuesday I done a second run, a break.
- 52:58I dipped out during work and I just got 40 minutes in.
- 53:02So I was like 9.2 K at 4:19 Wednesday morning, got up and
- 53:08done 60 minutes on the elliptical.
- 53:12Getting really sick of the elliptical.
- 53:13I just would rather do anything else than just go on to be
- 53:17honest. Choose Wednesday evening I just
- 53:21done my circuit class. Thursday morning I just had 40
- 53:26minutes in the morning. So again, 9K at like four 30s.
- 53:31And then Friday I had a little VO2 test in in College in Dublin
- 53:39and Carl training. It's like any Irish people will
- 53:42know, like the Trinity is where I like the smart kids go.
- 53:44So I always feel like I'm an imposter walking in here
- 53:46because, like, I have a brain cell in my head.
- 53:50But yeah. So the fitness test is you go
- 53:55in, they make you blow through this like tube to test, like how
- 53:59your lungs work. Then you hop on the treadmill,
- 54:03you run for I think it's 3 minutes at each pace.
- 54:08So I think it was 3 minutes at 3 minutes at like 14 kilometers an
- 54:15hour, 3 minutes at 16 kilometers an hour, 3 minutes.
- 54:18Seventeen 18/19/2021 until like you can't run anymore And yeah,
- 54:25test out. Well, like my heart rate was
- 54:28lower than last time. My life takes were lower than
- 54:30last time. And so the main thing like he,
- 54:36my body fat is like I'm 10% body fat.
- 54:39If I could get, get, if I could get that down to like 8%, it
- 54:42would just bring down like I'm just carrying less weight.
- 54:45Umm, but like my training is working.
- 54:47So ideally, umm, I tested that pretty soon.
- 54:51I only had like 3 and a bit months since my last Test so
- 54:55like next time I'll wait getting our test now at the end of
- 54:58summer or something to see how much I improved or if I did
- 55:01improve it at all. But like I'm going in the right
- 55:04direction. Basically just need a stack, not
- 55:06like 3 years of consistency on for this and.
- 55:11Did you take any observations around?
- 55:14Because I remember last time you did this which like you say is 3
- 55:17months ago. An observation was when you do
- 55:20some threshold work that you could maybe train at a slightly
- 55:24higher heart rate slash intensity for some of that LT2
- 55:27work. Did you take any other
- 55:30observations away this time? Not really because like I there
- 55:35wasn't that much bigger period like between and when you race
- 55:39because I race like relatively frequently.
- 55:42Like you don't get that big bass to actually see the improvement.
- 55:45So ideally did do a six month or 4 month block, just do a load
- 55:51load of work and then you'd see a big jump because I'm like
- 55:55chopping it up and the progress isn't as big, let's say.
- 56:01But yeah, I know. I just need to keep on doing
- 56:04that. Doing.
- 56:05Yeah, yeah. And yeah, and pleasing with some
- 56:10of like the velocity like you, you would have been for the same
- 56:13lactate levels, maybe slightly higher in terms of treadmill
- 56:16pace or you're just sort of seeing a different plot like for
- 56:18the same you, you getting your lactate tested the whole time.
- 56:22So you're probably just seeing that.
- 56:24So I suppose like because the question normally what you want
- 56:28to find is donate plotter on graphs and you want to find your
- 56:31LT1 and LT2 like inflection inflection points and they give
- 56:36that in a velocity IE like at a treadmill speed.
- 56:39So you would use while the different ratings this time
- 56:42around. So like my yeah, my lactate is
- 56:44like starting to peak later on in the curve basically.
- 56:47So I'm just becoming more official.
- 56:48Cool. Oh yeah, that's cool.
- 56:51So I'm yeah, but I'd love to get my bloods done just to see if
- 56:55I'm lacking in anything, just for my own like head for some.
- 57:00It's a good job, man. Just.
- 57:01Yeah, I. Don't stuff it'd be good to.
- 57:03Yeah, vitamin D, like over here in Ireland, we need a bit of
- 57:06sun, I told you. More like Lyra.
- 57:09Was it when I was it? Yeah.
- 57:11So that was, I had to take some supplements off the back of when
- 57:15I got a scan, whenever it was, you know, when I got some, you
- 57:21know, that pubic stress. When I saw the sports doctor,
- 57:23she recommended I get a blood test.
- 57:26And the only thing that I was low in was the was was vitamin
- 57:30D. Yeah.
- 57:32Yeah, because they can show up being potentially susceptible to
- 57:36like bone injuries and stuff. Can't.
- 57:38That was, it was a blood test that was really focused on
- 57:41trying to uncover anything that might have been a cause my yeah
- 57:48issue. So that was something.
- 57:49But yeah, that'd be a good idea. Get the time.
- 57:54Yeah, so, and I've got my health insurance now at work so I can
- 57:57claim some of the back. So yeah, I'll definitely be
- 58:00taken advantage of that. Is the body fat thing something
- 58:04which you're going to like deliberately work on?
- 58:07See, it's so hard because you're training at such a high
- 58:10intensity. If I start con or anything, I'll
- 58:12just get injured or sick or something.
- 58:14You just have to do it when you're not like training hard,
- 58:17basically like your man Jack O'Leary.
- 58:19He pulled, he pulled his training right down and he just
- 58:22basically, yeah, he cut a load of weight.
- 58:25And you just, you find a time of the year to do it.
- 58:27And I'm probably better off just doing it over like a long period
- 58:30of time. And so yeah, and that's in my
- 58:34own head as well. Like I'm so sort of like
- 58:37paranoid about my way and all, which probably isn't the best
- 58:39way to be, but. Like you're so I just wouldn't
- 58:43sweat it like you're flying the hardest things, the training and
- 58:46being resilient to injury. Like personally, I you're doing
- 58:53and like you said, the hardest thing for you is your consist
- 58:55is, is stacking. Like this is your best, what, 4
- 58:58month block ever? Probably month 6.
- 59:02Like I just just keep banking that.
- 59:04It's so good. You're in such good shape.
- 59:07Everything's flowing really nicely.
- 59:08Your body's been holding up really well, putting putting
- 59:11aside some minor things, but like, yeah, like all that sort
- 59:17of stuff at some point may get you really cherry right for
- 59:20something. But like directionally this is
- 59:24this is such a nice, you're in such a nice block.
- 59:27I'll just try and stay in there. Unlike the period where I've
- 59:31done my tests like it's very common for at least to be a
- 59:34little bit heavier in this period where you're like cross
- 59:36country, you're loading like Christmas as well, you're
- 59:39obviously going to might be a little bit heavier.
- 59:41So I come track season, I'd hope like you might be like 2 KG a
- 59:45lighter. So yeah, you have to take that
- 59:48into account as well. Yeah, look at Jake Smith as
- 59:52well. His his body fat now versus his
- 59:55body fat in his his first rendition.
- 59:57He'd be carrying a lot more weight now.
- 1:00:01And did you see his post? He just ran like a 220K weight,
- 1:00:04Absolutely, absolutely flying around.
- 1:00:07So yeah, good good example. And it can probably almost be
- 1:00:14something when you felt like you banged your head against a brick
- 1:00:16wall for like 6 or 12 months and stagnated through train and it's
- 1:00:20like maybe like a last resort, somewhere to go.
- 1:00:25And yeah, so that was was that was early Friday morning and
- 1:00:30then that evening I just got out to show up the legs, 45 minutes,
- 1:00:33420 threes, so around 10K. And next morning was the track
- 1:00:37session, so and the plan was to do 2 by 1K of 60 seconds.
- 1:00:44Then you had two minutes rest and then it was three sets of
- 1:00:48403 hundred 200 of 45 seconds with two minutes in between each
- 1:00:53set. So there was terrible wind along
- 1:01:00the back straight. It is track.
- 1:01:01It just was not fun as soon as you had it, like, yeah, it was
- 1:01:05just super shit. So it's so annoying.
- 1:01:07First, yeah, the first I've mentioned today is that like a
- 1:01:10whole like goal, 5K pace, so umm, 250 per kilometer.
- 1:01:15But I just, I wasn't having it today, that day.
- 1:01:18So I think I was like 250 fives and they felt hard and then the
- 1:01:23sets after or meant to be a 3K pace, but because the wind I'd
- 1:01:26just be digging myself into a hole and especially after the
- 1:01:28test the day before. So we just cut down back to 5K
- 1:01:31pace as well. So the four hundreds were in 60
- 1:01:35eights, the three hundreds were in 30 fours and the two hundreds
- 1:01:38were in like 30 ones 30s. And I've done the last set in
- 1:01:43them spikes. My spikes I'll be wearing
- 1:01:45hopefully for the indoors. So yeah, again like I felt so
- 1:01:50shit in the 1st two KS, 21 KS, but after that I actually felt
- 1:01:54good and probably helped. I had like my training pairs
- 1:01:58like told me around a little bit.
- 1:01:59So that was nice. And Saturday evening I don't 45
- 1:02:06minutes again, 10K420 fours. And then Sunday was the long
- 1:02:12run. So it was 90 minutes where 20
- 1:02:17minute pick up at the end. So and I wore the Puma Velocity
- 1:02:23fours. So just like your average daily
- 1:02:24trainer really like to shoe and yeah, I averaged like 23 odd
- 1:02:32kilometer at a pace of 4A340 sevens.
- 1:02:36So yeah, decent chunk there. And I had like my big style
- 1:02:40halfway true. And then some of that carb mix,
- 1:02:42the salty carb mix laughter to replenish myself.
- 1:02:47So yeah, 132 K for the for the week and yeah, I could be racing
- 1:02:57I well, the plan is to race this Saturday, making my debut in the
- 1:03:011500. My ankle is not get is not
- 1:03:07improving. So I'm tossing that up.
- 1:03:13But yeah, we'll see how it plays out.
- 1:03:16I'm constantly getting, I'm really getting physio twice a
- 1:03:19week on it, which is greatly hurting my bank account, but
- 1:03:24it's for my sanity. I'm going to go sauna tonight to
- 1:03:27try and get some heat into output.
- 1:03:29Like it's OK to run on. It's just it's there, which is
- 1:03:33the annoying thing. Like if I had to run on this for
- 1:03:35the rest of my life like I could.
- 1:03:36It's just it annoys me that it's not 100%.
- 1:03:39So yeah, we'll see how things go.
- 1:03:42But yeah, 1500 debut and this Saturday, which is exciting.
- 1:03:48You know the. Over under. 5 minutes. 5
- 1:03:54minutes. That'll be if the ankle does
- 1:03:57bust, won't it? I don't know.
- 1:04:00Like Josh Kerr just hobbling around.
- 1:04:04That that long run 340 sevens, is that we just do a steady the
- 1:04:08whole way or is that because you've really cranked it up to
- 1:04:12like three 10s or something in there?
- 1:04:15Yes, no for the 1st 70 minutes. Can I see the splits here for 70
- 1:04:19minutes? I'd say it was averaging like 4
- 1:04:21minute case and then I sort of yeah, picked it up for the last
- 1:04:2520 which was fun. Again, it's on a lovely like
- 1:04:31Greenway in in now than close to where I live.
- 1:04:35So a Greenway is basically it's like runs along an old and
- 1:04:39strain track but just goes on for like 36 K or something like
- 1:04:44that. Crazy.
- 1:04:45And so yeah, it's over the end back.
- 1:04:49And there I asked with the 1500 meters when you put your entry
- 1:04:53and you were about to put a predicted time in.
- 1:04:57I did, I didn't, and my club entered me, so I don't know what
- 1:05:00the hell they put. I don't even know what you say.
- 1:05:03I don't know. Yeah.
- 1:05:04What? What's the world?
- 1:05:09Well then doors like 332 or something.
- 1:05:14And yeah, the exciting to see. I just don't be in a world of
- 1:05:17pain. I don't even know how to run
- 1:05:19out. Like just hang on.
- 1:05:21Will you buy Carba? Oh, buy carb, Namio, the whole
- 1:05:26yeah, I owe them to everything. Maybe a two shots Anomio could
- 1:05:32come into. That could be the secrets.
- 1:05:35No, we're not doing that. I'll be flooded.
- 1:05:37Left it enough. Oh, that's so funny.
- 1:05:40But yeah. And any idea like is there like
- 1:05:466 different 1500 meter races if you've been seeded into which
- 1:05:50one or anything like that? It's like the lands there.
- 1:05:53So I really, I don't, I think there's only one race, which
- 1:05:59yeah, I don't know like even on a 200 meter like track, I
- 1:06:02haven't run indoors. I think I ran indoors once
- 1:06:04before when I was like a kid. So it's just going to be so
- 1:06:08different to what I'm used to and.
- 1:06:11Those indoor tracks or cheat codes though aren't they?
- 1:06:13So you should run really. Fast.
- 1:06:16It's not embossed themselves. We'll see what happens.
- 1:06:21Not expecting anything crazy. Hopefully you make it there in
- 1:06:25one piece. Main go main goal.
- 1:06:28Yeah, exactly. Just keep this ankle.
- 1:06:31And that's the ankle is really annoying me because it's like I
- 1:06:34rolled it myself. It's not like I got it like in a
- 1:06:38running in a race or something like that.
- 1:06:40It's just fucking rolled at being an idiot.
- 1:06:45Could you get it strap to ask the physio to strap at all?
- 1:06:48I think it's the tendons and ligaments.
- 1:06:51They're just angry at me and I'm always constantly like trying to
- 1:06:57get like massage Domino, but I don't know.
- 1:07:00I don't know, I. Have to get some custom Yacob
- 1:07:05shoes. Yeah, I'll get on to my sponsor.
- 1:07:14The interview keep taking over. Another good week.
- 1:07:18Yeah, direction. Trying to yeah, I can yeah roll
- 1:07:24through it if you like. So yeah, on Monday, just
- 1:07:28commuting to and from the office, no gym.
- 1:07:34I need to be home to look after the kids, so just straight home
- 1:07:37on Monday. Tuesday I got down to herdsman
- 1:07:42and just did 8 by two minutes on one minute float, not going at
- 1:07:47threshold, but just it's more or less at the point where I'm just
- 1:07:51trying to introduce a little bit more intensity through my pelvis
- 1:07:57area each time I do a workout. So I've sort of progressed from
- 1:08:0115 KS an hour, 15 and a half, 1616 1/2 rah rah rah.
- 1:08:05So this is at that maybe 17 1/2 KS an hour, sort of 18 KS an
- 1:08:08hour for the for the odds. Is this with Steve Skyden still?
- 1:08:13Is he still like walking you through it or to see you now?
- 1:08:16It's more me now. So he's giving me, he's given me
- 1:08:20his blessing and we've booked in an A check in end of Feb.
- 1:08:27But he just said just be careful as you're increasing intensity
- 1:08:32to not yeah, not just to not rush it.
- 1:08:36And, and I explained to him what I've been doing in terms of
- 1:08:39slowly increasing half AK an hour with some of these
- 1:08:41treadmill intervals. And he seemed to think that that
- 1:08:46was a sensible idea to keep doing that and incorporate my
- 1:08:50strides in and around that. So I think as I mentioned before
- 1:08:54each Mon, if I reflect on each Monday, like I'm not without
- 1:08:56some form of discomfort sometimes, some days I'll go for
- 1:08:59a run and it'd be completely fine.
- 1:09:01But some days I'll feel some things.
- 1:09:02But if I reflect on the Monday before, it's better than than
- 1:09:06that. And this Friday I'm getting a
- 1:09:08scan just to check in to make sure everything's looking all
- 1:09:10right. So which, yeah, hopefully will
- 1:09:14be fine. But yeah, so that's the the the
- 1:09:18feedback is just as I'm doing these workouts, just to toggle
- 1:09:23them up a little bit each time, which is what I've been doing.
- 1:09:27And I think what I did do, this one was like shorter intervals
- 1:09:31and maybe a little bit quicker. And I noticed when I jogged home
- 1:09:34up, other than my some adductor tightness, there was no
- 1:09:37discomfort in my, you know, where the original site of the
- 1:09:41discomfort where the issue is, which is a good sign I think.
- 1:09:44So did that in the morning, went for a jog in the evening, just
- 1:09:50easy 8 KS in the evening. Then Wednesday we're heading
- 1:09:54down South. So just before we headed down
- 1:09:55South, I just did like a steadier hour around that sort
- 1:10:02of four minute pace. And then Thursday I was down
- 1:10:09South and I just did an easy hour in the morning and an easy
- 1:10:1340 minutes in the afternoon. And then Friday I did 4K warm up
- 1:10:20and then I did 3 by 8 minutes and the 8 minutes were around
- 1:10:26320 pace the for the ONS and then two-minute float between
- 1:10:30those. So not really sort of getting up
- 1:10:34to threshold, like my heart rate was like 170.
- 1:10:37So it's like getting getting there.
- 1:10:38But it's still not quite marathon pace.
- 1:10:40Nothing too intense, but doing some work. 4K cool down Saturday
- 1:10:45and then a jog in the afternoon. Does it does it feel good to be
- 1:10:49doing like 8 minute reps with a relatively quick pace now Like
- 1:10:54feels? Yeah, it's a lot more again.
- 1:10:56Yeah, definitely. Yeah.
- 1:10:57Like as I was running towards the end in that last 8 minute
- 1:11:00Rep and you striding out, like I was getting a little bit
- 1:11:03quicker. Yeah, it feels fun.
- 1:11:06Like it feels like you're, you're running.
- 1:11:07So no, definitely, definitely enjoying the where, where will
- 1:11:13be where I'm, I mean, I'm very grateful that I'm able to do
- 1:11:17this for sure. And I'm really enjoying just
- 1:11:18being able to commute in and out of the office and like, just in
- 1:11:22terms of time, like this is the most efficient way for me to
- 1:11:26start getting like my training load is actually heading in the
- 1:11:29right direction again. Like everything feels like, you
- 1:11:32know, that nice tired in terms of the amount of training, the
- 1:11:35work you're doing, but it's not too much.
- 1:11:37I can see all of my like your VO2 on your on your garments
- 1:11:41ticking up your your heart rates coming down on your easy runs.
- 1:11:44Like all those just those nice feelings you're in that like
- 1:11:48regular training flow again. And it feels really nice.
- 1:11:51I think we're all be quite a bit more relaxed is where I'm not
- 1:11:55feeling discomfort and able to do workouts where I don't have
- 1:11:58to keep constantly thinking about the fact that I can't, I
- 1:12:02shouldn't. I've got to be careful in my
- 1:12:04approach. I think I'll be happy when I can
- 1:12:06just be a bit unrestricted with my training.
- 1:12:09But. Still very grateful.
- 1:12:12The week where you get home on a Thursday or something, like
- 1:12:14shit, I haven't felt my hip like all week.
- 1:12:17I've forgotten about it. That's that's what you need,
- 1:12:19isn't it? Yeah, exactly.
- 1:12:21And where I'm able to do like fully let go in a workout, like
- 1:12:25I'm still very much having to hold things back.
- 1:12:30But what I'm trying to focus on is the fact that I don't need to
- 1:12:33be doing that at the minute anyway.
- 1:12:34Like I'm still getting fitter each week with what I'm doing.
- 1:12:39And yeah, two runs again on the Saturday and then a shorter long
- 1:12:42run. We're we're a bit pressed.
- 1:12:43We're checking out from our accommodation.
- 1:12:44So I just did 80 minutes on yesterday morning.
- 1:12:50So it was what was it for the week?
- 1:12:53133 KS for the week A. 130. Two 132.
- 1:13:01That's it. We're the same. 132.8 What were
- 1:13:06you? I was 132 sorry I'm on your page
- 1:13:13and I was 132.1 so were you that mean?
- 1:13:24You're my answers 75.990 it's. Because I'm hiding some shit.
- 1:13:31Hi, Natalie. I don't.
- 1:13:32I only put up the sexy stuff. No one wants to see my OK warm
- 1:13:35ups and cool dance. Can can I subscribe to your
- 1:13:39straw? Is there any way of doing?
- 1:13:43That Hey, John. That's good, 132K.
- 1:13:51Are you planning to keep that rising Dean or you set a lot
- 1:13:53point where you settle down? No, I don't think so.
- 1:13:56I think once I get to maybe 140K is that I think if I'm doing
- 1:14:02anything more than that I'll do it by cross training.
- 1:14:06Yeah. OK, it's, it's my thinking.
- 1:14:08Yeah, yeah. Even around where I am, if I'm
- 1:14:12looking to do more, I think I can just ride and top it up that
- 1:14:15way. Like I think if I'm starting to
- 1:14:18polarize training again, you know, like doing proper training
- 1:14:20days, then what I'd what I'll do is then probably ride commute
- 1:14:25one of the other days to try and have a lighter day.
- 1:14:28That's my that's my thoughts. Nice.
- 1:14:34Yeah, had. No bike.
- 1:14:36Hopefully I had no bike or anything like that, but I was
- 1:14:38away so the easiest thing to do is just to get out and jog, yes.
- 1:14:43Will you be back on the Thursday and Saturday rides this week?
- 1:14:49I don't know, maybe I'm not sure yet.
- 1:14:53Yeah, perhaps one of them. It might be the way to do it.
- 1:15:00Well, segue to my week. I was going back to the Saturday
- 1:15:04morning ride for the first time in three weeks and I was
- 1:15:07petrified of being dropped. So the main goal was to survive,
- 1:15:12which happened. And then besides that, I'd done
- 1:15:17I'm up to 40 minutes now every other day, which is good in
- 1:15:21itself. However, still a slight bit of
- 1:15:24awareness like you're saying in around that not like pain as
- 1:15:28such, but it's just, and when I reflect, it's the same as how it
- 1:15:32felt when I'd done the five by one minute and the five by two
- 1:15:34minutes. So that's good.
- 1:15:37And I'm in with Steve tomorrow, so hopefully first time seeing
- 1:15:40him in three or four weeks to now get a plan as to how we can
- 1:15:44increase the frequency rather than just every other day.
- 1:15:48I'm assuming it'll be a backwards step, like do 20
- 1:15:51minutes today and 10 minutes tomorrow, but that's fine if it
- 1:15:56means that I can start running like almost every day.
- 1:16:00So yeah, I am the hot cross bun counter.
- 1:16:04Shit. I tried to keep it going.
- 1:16:06I think I'm on 21 hot cross buns and that sounds like that's like
- 1:16:113 weeks of no ride. And I did go through a whole
- 1:16:14packet whilst just doing not nothing like.
- 1:16:16So then that bumped it up. And did you keep up on Saturday?
- 1:16:22Yeah, just there was a few moments where it was in severe
- 1:16:25jeopardy. That's terrific.
- 1:16:29Particularly when we caught one of the first red lights and half
- 1:16:33the group rolled through and half of us didn't.
- 1:16:36So then for the next like 20 minutes, part of the splits that
- 1:16:40I was in was desperate to get back on, so they were just
- 1:16:43nailing it. So yeah, it was good fun.
- 1:16:47It proper dusted the cobwebs off.
- 1:16:50With the the other regulars, did they get spit out the back the
- 1:16:53plugs that we used to ride with? Now, so Scott rolled through
- 1:16:56because he goes at the front now.
- 1:16:58And then Anthony and Santi went there.
- 1:17:00Ah, there. You go makes.
- 1:17:02Sense. Owens laughing.
- 1:17:03Did they listen to the podcast? Have cycling friends?
- 1:17:07Did they listen to the podcast? Oh, I don't think so.
- 1:17:11Maybe they're aware of it now. Cycling's the new running.
- 1:17:16Out tonight? It really isn't.
- 1:17:17Do you? Know what I do?
- 1:17:22You know what I got for Christmas?
- 1:17:24Like new bike shoes, a helmet? What am I?
- 1:17:30What is going on? You have to get a new helmet by
- 1:17:33the way, because the kids were ripping him for his old one.
- 1:17:36Little Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:17:39Well, obviously like some. So I'm a little bit older than
- 1:17:43some of them, believe it or not, own.
- 1:17:45And my kit happened to match my age because it was from when I
- 1:17:51bought it when I was last interested in cycling, which is
- 1:17:5420 years ago. And I didn't realize that it was
- 1:17:57so obvious, but it is. And once I pointed it out, even
- 1:18:01I could say that it's quite obviously from a different era.
- 1:18:06So vintage. Vintage.
- 1:18:08That's what they actually that was, yeah.
- 1:18:10You'd fit right in with them. The same comments.
- 1:18:14But Luke was also ripping me because I would turn up to the
- 1:18:17right and in running gear. In running shorts, yeah.
- 1:18:22See both cop in it. One of those 440 minute runs in
- 1:18:26the week. I did this this way.
- 1:18:28I need to see Steve tomorrow because it's been like that
- 1:18:30long. I'm starting to get my own ideas
- 1:18:32and drift and stuff. So is.
- 1:18:34This you did another 327 care. I'd done a 10 minute pick up and
- 1:18:38then when I looked at the splits afterwards it was like 330-8339.
- 1:18:43No you didn't. You're going off paced.
- 1:18:47Exactly I need need reining in again.
- 1:18:51He might ask you how your gyms going.
- 1:18:55I'll tell him it's all right. Not going at all.
- 1:19:01It's it's going all right down there in the in level one, I'm
- 1:19:04sure. No, yeah, I'd done a bit whilst
- 1:19:11I was away because there's gyms in the hotels.
- 1:19:13But yeah, Monday today, isn't it?
- 1:19:16Yeah. For what it's worth, it was not
- 1:19:19open, so I'll. Tell us, I'll tell them that
- 1:19:24with just going back to the hot cross buns as well.
- 1:19:27Becky. Becky got them in and she got
- 1:19:30chocolate mud cake, which meant that the centre was like liquid
- 1:19:35chocolate. I didn't realize this.
- 1:19:37I thought that it was just like chocolate bread.
- 1:19:39So then when I whipped one out and it had been melting on my
- 1:19:42back anyway, bit into it and there's just chocolate going
- 1:19:47everywhere and I had the white jersey on.
- 1:19:50So ends up like wiping chocolate all over myself.
- 1:19:53Probably look like a shit myself.
- 1:19:55It's like the yoga incident all over again.
- 1:19:58It just follows me these things. I love that you've you've gone
- 1:20:04with. That's what I'm going to stuff
- 1:20:05down the bibniks as my snack. I know maybe I need to pivot
- 1:20:10really so I was being clever, but.
- 1:20:14Hi. I'm impressed and I think I
- 1:20:16would say the same that you're fueling in and around your
- 1:20:19activity. At least you're feeling.
- 1:20:22Yeah, that's the main thing, yeah.
- 1:20:26Well, you know, we're not all gifted by books, are we?
- 1:20:30Now take that out. That's.
- 1:20:34CNN. Has to stay in.
- 1:20:36Thank me. Thanks, Vlad.
- 1:20:39Love you, Vlad. Yeah.
- 1:20:43Maybe one once, once I can run it a week that is over 35
- 1:20:49kilometers then. Might be might be fueled by the
- 1:20:57by the real deal I. Haven't got much legs to stand
- 1:21:00on from that point of view right now.
- 1:21:03Shit, we've still got some more news to get through with that
- 1:21:05the Boston Marathon elite fields were released.
- 1:21:08I don't know if you've seen these, but there's Australians
- 1:21:12everywhere. Particularly say that.
- 1:21:15Yeah, so the the women, it's headlined by Sharon Licadi, who
- 1:21:19I think is the reigning champion, and there's an
- 1:21:22admission of Hal Nobiri, who is usually also there.
- 1:21:25Those two seem to go head to head every every year.
- 1:21:29Sharon Licadi, 217 PB. There's a host of other E
- 1:21:33Africans with sub 220 PBS, sub 219 even.
- 1:21:37And then you've got American Emily Sisson.
- 1:21:39She's the record holder 218. Sarah Hall, I think former
- 1:21:43record holder 2. 20 Emily Sisson lives in Ireland.
- 1:21:48She lives in Walford in Ireland. Yeah.
- 1:21:50Why? She's married to an I, I think
- 1:21:52she's married to an Irish guy. Yeah, yeah, So .5.
- 1:21:59Shit, if someone gets American record then she might change
- 1:22:02allegiance to Ireland and take the Irish record.
- 1:22:05If you look at that field pretty closely, there's going to be,
- 1:22:08well, she's still a good bit of Heinf, Neil McCormick, but
- 1:22:10there's an Irish girl in the elite field.
- 1:22:15A McCrea. 19 year old. Did Boston just get an extra
- 1:22:20like $10 million in their prize purse?
- 1:22:24Like have you seen the names and the breadth and depth of these
- 1:22:28fields? Yeah, that's what.
- 1:22:30You don't invite your one. What's it on Girl O'berry?
- 1:22:36But like you, like you wouldn't get a feel like this for the
- 1:22:41Olympics. The talents phenomenal
- 1:22:45domestically like the the USI don't know if I don't think they
- 1:22:49have AUS champs. Do they put the first American
- 1:22:52woman over the line? Like that's going to be crazy.
- 1:22:54There's so many of them. Susanna Sullivan, Fiona O'Keefe,
- 1:22:57Jess McClain, Natasha Rogers. Yeah.
- 1:23:02And then you throw in the Aussie is is Izzy Beth Doyle 22259 PB,
- 1:23:08Lisa Wightman 22315 PB and Leanne Pompiani, 22447 from last
- 1:23:17year. Did she do Sydney was her second
- 1:23:20one in the end she ran. Did she do Nagoya prior to?
- 1:23:23That yeah, yeah. It's Nagoya.
- 1:23:29And then Ava Crean, her she runs at a club called Back to Boston
- 1:23:33in Limerick and Ireland. So yeah, this will be her major
- 1:23:38marathon debut. Be interested to see how she
- 1:23:40goes on the hills, even though it's in that downhill.
- 1:23:43Is that Boston or is it? It doesn't, it's not legally.
- 1:23:48It doesn't count as a legal. Time.
- 1:23:49Yeah, that's right. It's point to point as well,
- 1:23:51isn't it? Oh, OK, yes, absolutely stacked,
- 1:23:55isn't it? It's the one.
- 1:23:57Is it Yuki? The one that Yuki carried.
- 1:24:01Yeah, it's the perfect time to kind of take a swing at a Boston
- 1:24:08where potentially like times, Yeah.
- 1:24:12Yeah, and I think that's the, I think that's reflected in the
- 1:24:15start list. Everyone, there's a lot of
- 1:24:16people having a crack at this. Like what?
- 1:24:19What are we staring at? 40 odd names here?
- 1:24:22Yeah. Yeah, pretty cool.
- 1:24:27And then also, we didn't mention the British Rep in there who
- 1:24:31seems to be part American these days with her husband.
- 1:24:35I think he's an American. Callie Horger Thackery, she's a
- 1:24:3822124 PB. So there's races within the race
- 1:24:42as well. It's going to be a good one.
- 1:24:45You're kind of looking at it like, can any of the American
- 1:24:50girls, Callie or the Aussie girls, can they just get lucky
- 1:24:55and I don't know, get top five, top three even?
- 1:24:58Because, you know, with how the East Africans prep and stuff.
- 1:25:03And despite there being 6 to 8 of them listed there as the
- 1:25:07fastest times, five of them won't have a good run and five
- 1:25:13of them all DNF or something, don't they?
- 1:25:17Yeah, but like, surely. Shit, that Sharon Laketti, I
- 1:25:20don't know. She's very consistent.
- 1:25:23You think she's a shoe in? Almost.
- 1:25:25Don't you? And then the likes of that work
- 1:25:27Nesh Edessa, like there's a few, it's quite a few to 18 quicker
- 1:25:35ladies. Kali Takari, her, her fella is
- 1:25:39in the in the male elite field, so I don't know if he's gonna
- 1:25:44run the elite race or will he pace her.
- 1:25:46You'd never know. She could have a pace of the
- 1:25:49whole way. Nothing else with that comment.
- 1:25:53We'll see going on to the men's field.
- 1:25:56Then we've got John career back. 2/02/24 PB Benson Kipruto Abdeen
- 1:26:04a gay Connor man Alex Messiah. Why has he got a Kenyan flag
- 1:26:11next to him, didn't he? That's not the Alex Messiah who
- 1:26:14just ran something at Houston. No, not.
- 1:26:20Sure. Oh, maybe it is, because I don't
- 1:26:21think that's gone through. Maybe he's got a chance to
- 1:26:25Turkey. Save that one for Owen, Richard
- 1:26:30Ringer, Sandra Moen. Gaelic Gaelum ropes in the lead
- 1:26:33field again. Andy Buchanan, Hendrick
- 1:26:36Pfeiffer, Rory Linklater, Clayton Young, Pat Tiernan, CJ
- 1:26:41Orbitson. Yeah, this is outrageous.
- 1:26:45Joe Clacker back for a second attempt.
- 1:26:48Callie's fella has got a faster PB than Joe Clacker.
- 1:26:51Charles Hicks, Barry Key. And you know him.
- 1:26:54Owen not. Really, I just know he's been in
- 1:26:58America for ages now. Like he went to college there.
- 1:27:00I think he's around my age, to be honest.
- 1:27:02And but yeah, he's very fast, 211.
- 1:27:08It'd be good to see. Hopefully Andy's back in shave.
- 1:27:12It's the other thought I had about people going to do Boston
- 1:27:16now is for the likes of like, Izzy's been kind of chasing the
- 1:27:21record for the last few races now and Andy obviously has the
- 1:27:25record. And then there's always going to
- 1:27:27be pressure to try and run faster every time.
- 1:27:30But Boston almost removed some of that pressure and expectancy
- 1:27:34about times, doesn't it? And you can just run the race
- 1:27:37and try. Obviously you want to run as
- 1:27:38fast as you can, but knowing that it's not going to count
- 1:27:41towards any records. Yeah, just racing a race would
- 1:27:45be fun, wouldn't? It.
- 1:27:48And that's where Sydney, I think is a great opportunity for
- 1:27:50Aussies and international folks because it's the same, same sort
- 1:27:54of thing. You're not just chasing the
- 1:27:56clock. Yeah, so can see how Andy gets
- 1:27:59on in in amongst them lot Pat Tiernan as well.
- 1:28:03I'm sure we'll preview this a bit more closely though, closer
- 1:28:05to the day, right? Yes, April 20th.
- 1:28:08It's day before London day. The London is on the Sunday and
- 1:28:15Boston is the Monday prior. I think next item on the news
- 1:28:20agenda list is that I don't know if you've seen this Grant
- 1:28:22Fisher. I was quite surprised really to
- 1:28:25hear this. He's doing an interview and he
- 1:28:27announces that he's definitely making the switch to the roads
- 1:28:31and he's comparing himself, his likeness to Conor Manse that are
- 1:28:35of similar age. And he's reflecting on the
- 1:28:37success that Manse has had already on the roads.
- 1:28:40And he says, I don't want to be like kinda just doing it late in
- 1:28:44my career and just going for like one last paycheck.
- 1:28:47I want to make it meaningful basically.
- 1:28:49So he's confirmed he's making his half marathon debut at the
- 1:28:53New York City half on March 15th.
- 1:28:57Yeah, he's going to go well as well.
- 1:28:59You just know, even though he's New York a fast half, I'm not
- 1:29:01too sure, but regardless, like he's definitely a 60 in the bag.
- 1:29:05It's just how far under 60 he does really.
- 1:29:10Yeah, some similar thoughts. I think he yeah, I don't know.
- 1:29:14And I said he mentioned that he wants to tackle the roads.
- 1:29:16I suppose the problem is though, it's quite difficult between,
- 1:29:19you know, what's he just run trying to attempt a world record
- 1:29:22at the 2K this week and then he's big, you know, I assume
- 1:29:26fairly different between the two K and the half.
- 1:29:28And do you remember when Jacob was running so well at the end
- 1:29:32of the Diamond League races and then went and ran?
- 1:29:34I can't remember which half was it where and the wheels just
- 1:29:39came off 3. Copenhagen was it?
- 1:29:40Yeah, that Copenhagen half and it didn't go well for him.
- 1:29:44So yeah, it'd be interesting to see how it converts.
- 1:29:51He looks made for it, but. You know, he's just, he's got
- 1:29:54that insane threshold, hasn't he Said there's going to be a lot
- 1:29:57of expectancy around that. So it's pretty bold of him to
- 1:30:01take it on because he probably knows that too.
- 1:30:04Just looking, his current 10,000 meter PB on the track is 2633
- 1:30:10national record and that's a minute quicker than what Conor
- 1:30:15Mance has ran on the track. Yeah, I think he's like a
- 1:30:19classier runner to be honest. Like he's beating and meddling
- 1:30:24opposite all those E Africans, whereas Conor Mance is still
- 1:30:27like a minute or so or two minutes off the top guys in the
- 1:30:31marathon. Yeah, my comparison being though
- 1:30:35that Mance is the the record holder for the US and the half
- 1:30:39and the marathon. Yeah.
- 1:30:41It's just a shame that, like Owen alluded to, it might not be
- 1:30:44comparable in terms of horses for courses.
- 1:30:47Is it like you assume if if New York City half is anything like
- 1:30:53the marathon, there'll be a bit of elevation?
- 1:30:57I'm sure he even mentioned in that interview as well, like
- 1:31:00marathon. So he's not just going to the
- 1:31:04roads because like sometimes you can say you go into the roads
- 1:31:07and you're going to run 10 KS half, so whatever, and the
- 1:31:09marathon be treated separately. But he literally says like,
- 1:31:13yeah, marathon too. So that's pretty exciting, I
- 1:31:17reckon. And then we got some more elite
- 1:31:20fields for the race in Japan next weekend, though.
- 1:31:24Yeah, so Maragami, the race we all done last year is happening
- 1:31:28on the 1st of February and some pretty big names going across to
- 1:31:32Japan for this one. So some of the elite women is
- 1:31:35Ellis Mccolgan from Great Britain, she's around 6543.
- 1:31:38She'll look to lower that. Izzy, about Doyle doing this in
- 1:31:41prep for Boston, she's around 6717 last year.
- 1:31:46And then Charlotte Perdue is the other big name that we'd all
- 1:31:49know. She ran 68-O2 is her PBS from
- 1:31:53Maragami in 2024. Actually Georgie Gregic from New
- 1:31:57Zealand, she is in the elite field as well.
- 1:32:00She's a 6913 girl. And then there's just like a lot
- 1:32:03of Kenyans and other fast Japanese and on the male side,
- 1:32:07again a shit load of fast Kenyans.
- 1:32:10And then notable mention is Sandra Moen, he's again, he's
- 1:32:14doing Boston. He ran 6011.
- 1:32:18So 60 minutes and 11 seconds in Maragami in 2024.
- 1:32:24Oh, there an old mention Isaac Kane from Australia, his PBS
- 1:32:27from Launceston in 2025, where he ran 6113.
- 1:32:30He'll hope to lower that. Wasn't there some chatter,
- 1:32:34didn't he run Valencia as I came recently and ahead of there was
- 1:32:38a little bit of chatter around a potential Aussie record or if
- 1:32:42not 60 low. So I mean, I, when I heard that,
- 1:32:49I was a little bit surprised and then obviously never done it.
- 1:32:53But maybe he's, he's going back for it again.
- 1:32:56Because obviously we know how fast marigami can be and
- 1:33:00otherwise why? Why go to Japan like kind of by
- 1:33:02yourself and stuff. And it's the perfect place to
- 1:33:07run out as well. Like we all know how stacked it
- 1:33:09is and how deep the heels are so.
- 1:33:12Well, was that where the Japanese record got broken as
- 1:33:14well? Right when we were there last
- 1:33:16year? Twice.
- 1:33:17So yeah. Or they went under 59260 for the
- 1:33:21first time or something. And they went by quite a bit,
- 1:33:24didn't they? Weren't they like 59 teens?
- 1:33:26So like, and then they're just absolutely streaming through
- 1:33:29like what was Brett like 70th in 61 minutes?
- 1:33:34Other not mentioned, Liam Boudin from Australia.
- 1:33:37He's around 6140. He's in there as well.
- 1:33:41But yeah, keep an eye out on that one.
- 1:33:45Fuck, if ever you need to feel shit about not being fest or not
- 1:33:50being not running, it's not a reminder that that race is
- 1:33:54happening next weekend. Well, Ryan, if you ever I think
- 1:33:59that this the time where you change gender and start doing
- 1:34:02the 400 meter hurdles because him Sidney McLaughlin is now at
- 1:34:07that event as well. She's having a child.
- 1:34:09So it is wide open. No fan cabal, no Sidney
- 1:34:13McLaughlin, Kobe or Calling. Hello, Brienne Greenwood.
- 1:34:21A joked about doing the steeplechase, but even in the
- 1:34:24the hurdles, I don't think I'd have a sniff not.
- 1:34:28Give. We can be the judge of that.
- 1:34:31Give it a go. We'll give feedback.
- 1:34:33That will be. Probably.
- 1:34:37You just stand over them, Yeah, you just be running and you
- 1:34:40wouldn't even none. Just run.
- 1:34:43How many allowed to knock over? Just run straight through them.
- 1:34:46Hey, you can knock them all over.
- 1:34:48Just absolutely send it straight through.
- 1:34:53Right. Well, lastly then since we're
- 1:34:56here, Jacobinga, Britain has also recently very boldly laid
- 1:35:00claim to attempt a world record in the 1500 meters, the 3000
- 1:35:06meters and the 5000 meters at some points in 2026.
- 1:35:10And he also said that he won't be opening the season until at
- 1:35:15least or around June time. So I don't know what to make of
- 1:35:19that, whether he's still having troubles, difficulties with this
- 1:35:23injury or whether he's just taking extra precautions and
- 1:35:27getting a massive base behind them before taking on these
- 1:35:30record attempts. Probably a bit of both really,
- 1:35:34isn't it? Most likely, which makes sense.
- 1:35:40Yeah, You'd rather see him when he does come back, he actually
- 1:35:43comes back rather than like if he tries and doesn't do it, then
- 1:35:47you just be a bit like people start asking questions about is
- 1:35:51he kind of, is he going to be back to the top level ever?
- 1:35:55So yeah, he needs to make it stick.
- 1:35:57And needs to be well, like Evan Jagger, remember when we were
- 1:36:02chatting to him and he's talking about getting in that injury
- 1:36:04loop? So best thing to do would be to
- 1:36:07take the time pressure out of it and just try and get well.
- 1:36:11And we should take our own advice here and follow protocol.
- 1:36:17Keep building advice. Double trouble then, Owen.
- 1:36:19Yeah, I believe you have got one lined up.
- 1:36:23Yeah. So came out during the week that
- 1:36:29basically Turkey is paying people to represent their
- 1:36:33country in just, yeah, normal terms.
- 1:36:39They've put together this little program and let me find that
- 1:36:47like you see now, a few canyons are going to start running for
- 1:36:50them, but they have it that if you sign with them, I can't even
- 1:36:57find it now. It's like Turkey's version of
- 1:37:01the Saudi Arabian sports washing regime, isn't it?
- 1:37:05Basically. So here we go, this is all
- 1:37:10coming come to such like fruition because Bridget Cosguy,
- 1:37:14who is like renowned as a Kenyan marathoner, she's switching her
- 1:37:18allegiances to Turkey, head of the 2028 LA Olympics.
- 1:37:23So Cosguy ran 218 for second place in Sydney Marathon.
- 1:37:28She also finished she ran 216 in Shanghai Marathon last year as
- 1:37:33well. But So what Turkey are putting
- 1:37:36together is they're offering a $500,000 signing bonus if you
- 1:37:44come and join them. And then there's this port
- 1:37:46package of bonuses of 380 grand for an Olympic gold medal and an
- 1:37:51additional 190,000 if the athlete sets an Olympic record.
- 1:37:56She has to do this now because it there's like a three-year
- 1:37:59waiting period for it to kick in.
- 1:38:02But it's just like she came to see got second in the Tokyo
- 1:38:08Olympics in Kenya. Like, it just doesn't make sense
- 1:38:11that they let this happen. Last year, Jamaica's Jayden
- 1:38:16Hibbert and a few others, they started the process to switch
- 1:38:20leading shows as well. It's crazy.
- 1:38:24And it definitely should not be allowed.
- 1:38:26Like you're basically like, imagine being Turkish and seeing
- 1:38:30this shit like off the fork. Yeah.
- 1:38:34How are you meant to get behind them if you are Turkish?
- 1:38:36Like one of the good things about about the Olympics or
- 1:38:39national sports is like you can't remove the connection of
- 1:38:45the fact that you're both born in the same country.
- 1:38:47Whereas this is just like becomes a team sport where
- 1:38:50you're signing people from here, there and everywhere.
- 1:38:53I don't understand physically how they're allowed to do it
- 1:38:56either. Like surely the regulations
- 1:38:59state that. Like that's why we see that the
- 1:39:03whole Irish English complexity about people finding connections
- 1:39:09like higher up the family tree. But what now?
- 1:39:12These can just put 500 grand on the line.
- 1:39:14Then you say you from there. I don't understand it.
- 1:39:18Cause guy doesn't have a great granny from Turkey.
- 1:39:21Like it makes no sense. And the fact that they're
- 1:39:25they've come out and say like they're saying they're paying
- 1:39:27them, like they're not hiding this.
- 1:39:30It's just, yeah, it's crazy. Dean support I.
- 1:39:37I just like winning, so I'm just thinking what what do we need to
- 1:39:40do to win? That's what Turkey is thinking.
- 1:39:44Just fill them with EPL. Shit.
- 1:39:48And why is it just Turkey by the way a techie?
- 1:39:51Just the first ones on to it and a load of other countries that
- 1:39:54follow or. So they've, they've done it
- 1:39:57before. But so there used to be this
- 1:39:59really good cross country, one called Can and she would have
- 1:40:02won the European cross country, yeah.
- 1:40:05And but she was the only one. And now they're doing.
- 1:40:09Wasn't it too for a period of time?
- 1:40:11Wasn't the two Kenyans running for Turkey during Europe that
- 1:40:15didn't they go 1/2 for a little while?
- 1:40:17Probably. I'm really not sure.
- 1:40:19Yeah, not good for the sport. It's not good for the sport.
- 1:40:23Because you'd remember it. Because that is it for NOLA.
- 1:40:25McCormack would be otherwise winning, yeah.
- 1:40:31I mean, what sort of sum would you have to be paid to sell your
- 1:40:35soul and go and represent Buddy Yale?
- 1:40:39Probably depends who's listening.
- 1:40:43Sounds alright. You wouldn't be worrying about
- 1:40:46your Bix, would you? No, shouldn't be allowed.
- 1:40:56Not in the spirit of things, is it?
- 1:40:58No. It's funny I just pumped it into
- 1:41:02ChatGPT. Tell me about high profile
- 1:41:04athlete to switch allegiances from country to country and
- 1:41:08who's listed there Is Declan Rice from Ireland to England?
- 1:41:12But that's a joke as well. Like he actually played a senior
- 1:41:15friendly with Ireland and then he just flocks off to England
- 1:41:19like it's it should not be allowed.
- 1:41:22Future Captain Material. What was England offering?
- 1:41:31Maybe it's, again, it's sort of what do they say that countries
- 1:41:36are like companies just with flags, You know, they're just
- 1:41:39sort of Turkey's just on a recruitment drive.
- 1:41:43Yeah, but Turkey is such an irrelevant country as well.
- 1:41:45Like I just don't get it. I wonder if now we'll see them
- 1:41:52like front, not massive bids to host major championships and
- 1:41:55stuff. Maybe athletics is like part of
- 1:41:58the strategy over the long term. It's like the pumping series
- 1:42:03money into it. To be fair, some like that's a
- 1:42:06lot of money for just people to run.
- 1:42:09Wonder where it comes? It's all that hair.
- 1:42:10Hair transplant money. People getting their veneers.
- 1:42:16Shit, someone else who comes up Wilson, Kip Cassia, the four
- 1:42:21record holder? Yeah, he switched from Kenya to
- 1:42:23demo. Guys, that was not a Danish
- 1:42:27name. You must have known that there's
- 1:42:31not many of Kip Katie as from fucking Denmark walking around.
- 1:42:37All right. And that's as done then.
- 1:42:40Thanks for your double troubles. Thanks for listening.
