- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:29Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:33Service, and Love.
- 0:35And today we have a guest with us,
- 0:37Daniel Small, the pastor of Community Groups at
- 0:40Christ Community Church here in the Fox Valley.
- 0:43Thanks for joining us, Daniel.
- 0:44Yeah, of course.
- 0:44Happy to be here.
- 0:45Thanks for having me, Chris.
- 0:46And Daniel and I have connected about faith
- 0:48and work.
- 0:49That's part of your role too over there
- 0:50at the church, which is great.
- 0:52So as we get started, just for listeners
- 0:54who may not know you, since the title
- 0:57of the podcast is Finding God at Work,
- 0:58what helps you find God at work on
- 1:00a normal workday for you?
- 1:01I love that question.
- 1:03Yeah.
- 1:03So one of the things that I really
- 1:06enjoy doing is at the end of my
- 1:07week, I almost do an adapted prayer of
- 1:10examen sort of thing.
- 1:11So at the end of my week, I'll
- 1:13review just the meetings, interactions.
- 1:16I'll go through my calendar and just express
- 1:18gratitude for those things, the things that I
- 1:21had, the interactions that I had.
- 1:23And just noticing God's presence, where he showed
- 1:26up in my week, and some of the
- 1:27things that I'm grateful for.
- 1:29It just helps me be more attuned, I
- 1:31think, and attentive to the Holy Spirit and
- 1:33how he's working throughout my day and throughout
- 1:35my week.
- 1:36And so I do that.
- 1:37And then I look forward to the week
- 1:38ahead.
- 1:39So then I pray through the things that
- 1:41I have coming up for the week ahead.
- 1:42Maybe it's a meeting or a project that
- 1:45I'm working on and just try to invite
- 1:47God into that and ask him to be
- 1:51present in it.
- 1:52And it also helps me recall and remember
- 1:55things that are really important sometimes.
- 1:57Oh, God, thank you for bringing that to
- 1:58my attention.
- 2:00So I have found that to be something
- 2:02that has been really beneficial for me at
- 2:04the end of my work week.
- 2:05That's great.
- 2:06I love that it's not just looking back,
- 2:08but also looking ahead.
- 2:10Heading off our tendency to look at the
- 2:11future with anxiety by welcoming God's presence in
- 2:14from the get-go.
- 2:15That's fantastic.
- 2:18So thinking about your own vocational journey, maybe
- 2:21it would be helpful for listeners just to
- 2:22hear a little bit of what that journey
- 2:24has been.
- 2:24Because you kind of have an interesting mix
- 2:26of things over time.
- 2:28So yeah, let's start with that.
- 2:29And then I have a few questions for
- 2:30you.
- 2:30Yeah, it's been an interesting vocational journey.
- 2:33So I graduated from Wheaton with my degree
- 2:35in business and econ.
- 2:37And during my time at Wheaton, I thought
- 2:38I wanted to be an entrepreneur.
- 2:40I noticed that I really liked creating and
- 2:41starting new things.
- 2:43And I thought to myself, man, I think
- 2:45I want to be an entrepreneur.
- 2:46I didn't know in what yet, but I
- 2:48just noticed that that was kind of my
- 2:50bend.
- 2:50And but I was really passionate about the
- 2:53intersection of culture and faith.
- 2:56That was something that I was really passionate
- 2:58about.
- 2:59And so for a while, I was thinking,
- 3:01like, I don't know if I want to
- 3:02go into church ministry or if I want
- 3:03to go into business.
- 3:05And so I didn't do either of those
- 3:07things.
- 3:07And I started working at Wheaton College when
- 3:09I first graduated.
- 3:10And it's kind of a long story.
- 3:12But basically, I had known somebody there.
- 3:14They offered me a job.
- 3:15And I was like, I think I'm going
- 3:16to take it.
- 3:17And backing up just a little bit, the
- 3:19first summer I graduated, I worked.
- 3:22I don't know if you know this or
- 3:23not, but I worked for a digital marketing
- 3:25company and a church plant.
- 3:27At the same time.
- 3:27At the same time.
- 3:28OK.
- 3:29The pastor who had started this church also
- 3:32owned the digital marketing company.
- 3:33He was bivocational.
- 3:34And he was like, the digital marketing company
- 3:36can pay you.
- 3:37The church can't.
- 3:38But you can do both of those things
- 3:40if you want.
- 3:41I'm bivocational, so you can be bivocational.
- 3:43Exactly.
- 3:43Yeah.
- 3:43I was like, OK, great.
- 3:45You know, that's awesome.
- 3:46So anyways, I did that and thought the
- 3:50digital marketing company work was really interesting.
- 3:54Had a really difficult time at the church
- 3:55plant.
- 3:56And I was like, I don't think this
- 3:57is for me.
- 3:59And so then I went to one of
- 4:01the career people at Wheaton at the time,
- 4:04had a good relationship with.
- 4:05And she was like, hey, what if you
- 4:07worked here for a little while?
- 4:09And so that was kind of my first
- 4:10full-time gig out of college and was
- 4:13doing that.
- 4:14And I noticed that I loved helping students.
- 4:17I loved coaching.
- 4:18I loved that kind of one-on-one,
- 4:20helping someone get from point A to point
- 4:21B.
- 4:24And then I had realized, like, man, I
- 4:27had not landed in really either the church
- 4:29world or in the business world, like I
- 4:31thought.
- 4:31And most successful entrepreneurs seem to start in
- 4:34kind of that consulting route.
- 4:35And I didn't know exactly what I wanted
- 4:36to do.
- 4:37And getting paid to solve problems for people
- 4:39sounded heroic.
- 4:42So yeah, I am somewhat of a competitive
- 4:45person.
- 4:46So I started studying business cases and doing
- 4:48all those things.
- 4:50And then, yeah, eventually I landed what I
- 4:53thought was my dream job at a really
- 4:55large consulting firm, one of the big four.
- 4:58And I was traveling, making a lot of
- 5:00money, and doing really interesting work.
- 5:03It was really great.
- 5:06But a couple years into it, I just
- 5:08felt this like kind of tension where I
- 5:11was like, man, I feel like this is
- 5:12really important work, but this isn't the work
- 5:14that I feel like God has for me.
- 5:17And it was really interesting to come to
- 5:19that conclusion.
- 5:20And after a lot of prayer and kind
- 5:23of discernment, I ended up deciding to go
- 5:27into a vocational church ministry setting.
- 5:30And there's kind of obviously a long story
- 5:32behind that and why I ended up choosing
- 5:34that path.
- 5:35So yeah, I've been now at Christ Community
- 5:37for the past three years now.
- 5:39So I've got sort of an eclectic background
- 5:41of higher ed, consulting, and now working in
- 5:44a church ministry setting.
- 5:45So yeah, that's my journey.
- 5:47I think listeners will really appreciate that.
- 5:49As we've been talking about calling, we've talked
- 5:51about how sometimes you're in a spot, and
- 5:54then you're in a different spot later on.
- 5:56Sometimes you feel really called to something, but
- 5:57what's putting food on the table is something
- 6:00different.
- 6:01And so I think that kind of eclectic
- 6:02mix is more common than not.
- 6:04For a lot of us in this series
- 6:07that we're doing on Meaningful Work, we're kind
- 6:09of turning the corner from talking about calling
- 6:11to talking about formation.
- 6:13So looking at your work experience, kind of
- 6:15any chapter of it, is there a moment
- 6:17where you feel like your work itself was
- 6:20especially important to your spiritual growth?
- 6:22Oh, that's great.
- 6:23Yeah.
- 6:24So when I think of formation, I think
- 6:27of two sides of it.
- 6:28There's formation and then there's counter formation.
- 6:31I don't know if you want me to
- 6:31speak just to the formation side.
- 6:33Either way.
- 6:35Deformation, reformation.
- 6:36Well, OK.
- 6:36There's a particular story that comes to mind
- 6:38on the deformation side of things.
- 6:39So when I was in consulting, it was
- 6:43very fast-paced work and very demanding with
- 6:47high expectations.
- 6:48And I had noticed that generally I just
- 6:51became a more anxious person.
- 6:53I was just generally more anxious.
- 6:56Even work outside of work, I was always
- 6:58thinking about work, though.
- 6:59I mean, it would be 11 o'clock
- 7:00and I'm like, oh my goodness.
- 7:02I need to get ahead on this particular
- 7:05thing.
- 7:06And so it was stressful.
- 7:09And one particular moment is, I don't know,
- 7:132, 3 in the morning.
- 7:14I don't even remember this.
- 7:17My wife told me this story.
- 7:18But I wake up.
- 7:19I don't wake up.
- 7:20I'm still asleep.
- 7:21But I'm like, I figured it out.
- 7:23Size 10 aerial font.
- 7:27And then I just went right back to
- 7:28sleep.
- 7:28Like head hit the pillow and that was
- 7:31it.
- 7:31My wife, she obviously thought it was hysterical.
- 7:35She heard the whole thing.
- 7:36Saw me sit up out of bed, say
- 7:37that, and then go right back to sleep.
- 7:39And she wrote it down because she was
- 7:41like, this is what happens.
- 7:42Apparently this was important.
- 7:44There's some report or project you're working on
- 7:45where you need to know this.
- 7:46You need to know that you had figured
- 7:48it out.
- 7:49And this is the answer.
- 7:51That's how often, though, I was working in
- 7:53PowerPoint.
- 7:54I was always thinking about font sizes and
- 7:55all that stuff.
- 7:56So anyways, so yeah, it affected my sleep
- 7:59patterns and anxiety.
- 8:01And so as a way to sort of
- 8:03counter that, one of the things that I
- 8:05had started doing was I put on my
- 8:07work calendar a 30-minute block where I
- 8:11was like, no matter how busy or stressful
- 8:13or whatever my day is, I'm going to
- 8:15take this 30 minutes.
- 8:16And I'm going to eat lunch and go
- 8:19on a prayer walk without my phone.
- 8:21I'm just going to go on a prayer
- 8:22walk in nature if I can.
- 8:25And that was a very small thing.
- 8:27And I don't think it solved all of
- 8:29the problems, so to speak.
- 8:30But I definitely noticed pausing in the middle
- 8:32of my day to be with God changed
- 8:35the trajectory, kind of reset me a little
- 8:37bit, and helped me go into my other
- 8:39meetings and other things I needed to do
- 8:41with a much more clear mind and much
- 8:44more at peace.
- 8:46So I think that was something that was
- 8:47really helpful for me.
- 8:48Yeah, yeah.
- 8:50I resonate a lot with that vision of
- 8:52anxiety.
- 8:53And when you're in an intense work environment,
- 8:55like working for a big four consulting company,
- 8:57there can be really high expectations.
- 8:59And for me as an achiever and a
- 9:01performer, certainly I find my anxiety dialing into
- 9:04those high expectations sometimes when those are there.
- 9:08So a way to go figuring out how
- 9:09to interrupt your own treadmill of anxiety, how
- 9:13to hop off of the treadmill, so to
- 9:14speak, with that walk.
- 9:16Yeah, yeah.
- 9:17I'm just curious.
- 9:20Well, I shouldn't presume.
- 9:21I imagine that your current work at the
- 9:23church has a different kind of intensity to
- 9:25it than big four consulting.
- 9:28But is that a practice you've continued?
- 9:30Do you still do the prayer walk?
- 9:32Or what does it look like for you
- 9:33now?
- 9:33Yeah, I still do that.
- 9:35What I do now, though, is I incorporate
- 9:37scripture memorization.
- 9:38So I try to meditate on a verse,
- 9:40one verse, as I go on a prayer
- 9:42walk.
- 9:42And that's kind of like my focus.
- 9:43So I'll kind of work on memorizing that
- 9:45one verse, and then I'll pray through it,
- 9:48just as a way of talking with God
- 9:51about it.
- 9:51And that's just helped me kind of memorize
- 9:53scripture and engage with God in that way.
- 9:55Yeah, yeah.
- 9:56Wonderful.
- 9:57In the church role, you also get to
- 9:59work with everyday Christians and speaking into their
- 10:03lives around faith and work.
- 10:05So I'm curious about that, too.
- 10:06Is there a specific story of maybe a
- 10:09specific person or family where their life with
- 10:12God and their life at work kind of
- 10:13came together that you got to witness or
- 10:15be part of in some way?
- 10:17Yeah, yeah.
- 10:19So one of the things that we started
- 10:20doing probably about two years ago now at
- 10:23our church is we launched a faith and
- 10:25work cohort, which is kind of a small...
- 10:29It's designed to be done with a small
- 10:31group of interdisciplinary vocational fields.
- 10:34And kind of going in and saying, OK,
- 10:37we're going to spend some extended time thinking
- 10:39about the integration of faith and work.
- 10:41It's a 12-week course that we've designed.
- 10:43And the very first one that we did
- 10:45a couple years ago was one that I
- 10:47was leading.
- 10:48And there was one person in this cohort
- 10:51who was like, you know, I don't really
- 10:54know why exactly I'm here.
- 10:56I just I found it to be interesting.
- 10:58And I'm just curious, you know, and just
- 11:00kind of exploring.
- 11:01And like, well, thanks.
- 11:02You know, thanks for being honest and thanks
- 11:03for being here.
- 11:05And one of the ideas that just really
- 11:08struck her, and she'll talk about it to
- 11:10this day, is just talking about this idea
- 11:12of working for the common good.
- 11:16And for her, that was something that was
- 11:18just unlocked something in her.
- 11:20So she works for a company that like
- 11:24makes credit cards.
- 11:26OK, sure.
- 11:28And she would be like, you know, I
- 11:29don't understand.
- 11:29And she's the CFO of that company.
- 11:31So she's like, I'll be honest.
- 11:33I don't know how my work really connects
- 11:36to faith.
- 11:37And I'm just having a hard time seeing
- 11:38that connection.
- 11:39And for her, this idea of like that
- 11:42your work is designed, like it's for the
- 11:46flourishing of society.
- 11:47And here's how.
- 11:47And once she was able to draw some
- 11:49of those lines of like, OK, here's how
- 11:51my work helps other people flourish and actually
- 11:54work.
- 11:56And, you know, and obviously like credit.
- 11:58And there's a whole lot of things there.
- 12:00But multifaceted there is a way to connect
- 12:02that to seeing how, you know, your work
- 12:04is still good.
- 12:05And so for her, like seeing how her
- 12:08work benefits other people and serves other people
- 12:10was just, I think, a really beautiful, a
- 12:13beautiful idea for her.
- 12:14And that that helped her approach her work
- 12:18in a more, I think, a dignifying way.
- 12:21She was much more engaged at work just
- 12:24in terms of like, OK, this is something
- 12:25that I'm helping benefit society and serving other
- 12:28people in.
- 12:29And so such a very simple idea for
- 12:32her.
- 12:32But it unlocks something significant.
- 12:34And now she's on our faith and work
- 12:36leadership team.
- 12:36And she will still talk about that, that
- 12:38idea.
- 12:39She's like, this was really helpful for me.
- 12:40And I'm grateful for it.
- 12:42So, yeah, that's what I would say.
- 12:43Yeah, yeah.
- 12:44As a kind of preacher, teacher type myself,
- 12:47I love it when like a phrase or
- 12:49an idea can just make the light bulb
- 12:51turn on for somebody like that.
- 12:53That's so encouraging.
- 12:54And I love that idea, too.
- 12:56Even like the plastic manufacturing piece of our
- 12:59financial system.
- 13:00Like when I go and buy my groceries
- 13:02at Aldi every week, I got to tap
- 13:04something to pay for it, right?
- 13:05And that's part of a very significant part
- 13:07of my life with me and my family
- 13:09eating what we eat that week.
- 13:11Totally.
- 13:11Yeah.
- 13:12So that's really beautiful.
- 13:13Well, I wish we had more time to
- 13:15keep going, but I want to keep this
- 13:17commute length podcast to that length.
- 13:19Often at the end of the episode, we
- 13:21pray.
- 13:21So I like to invite guests to pray
- 13:23as well.
- 13:23So if you wouldn't mind, would you be
- 13:25willing to just pray for our listeners for
- 13:27the things we've talked about?
- 13:28I'd be happy to, yeah.
- 13:33Father, God, we are grateful for work and
- 13:36the gift of work.
- 13:37God, I pray for anybody who is listening
- 13:39to this.
- 13:41And they are wondering how their work connects
- 13:44to your work and the larger story of
- 13:45what you're doing in the world.
- 13:46God, I pray that they would see how
- 13:49their work matters and why it matters to
- 13:51you, God, and the difference that it's making
- 13:53in our world.
- 13:54God, I pray for all of us who
- 13:57are being formed through our work.
- 13:58God, I pray that we would find intentional
- 14:00practices to meet you through our work, God,
- 14:03and that we would encounter you in those
- 14:05very spaces where we least expect it in
- 14:08our work.
- 14:09And that because of that, God, that we
- 14:11would learn to commune with you through our
- 14:14everyday work.
- 14:15We love you.
- 14:16It's your name that we pray.
- 14:46Amen.
