- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning, happy Thursday. I'm at the Virginia Mason Athletic
- 0:09Speaker 2: Center at Seahawks headquarters again. Headlines brought to you by Frostbrook.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Of course, as cold as the Rockies. The Mariners aren't
- 0:15Speaker 2: mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, not yet. Here's why, because
- 0:20Speaker 2: of what happened last night. Naylor winning run at third.
- 0:22Speaker 3: And he lines it into center field.
- 0:25Speaker 4: And Seattle walks off the Astros.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Bases loaded single by Josh Naylor in the bottom of
- 0:33Speaker 2: the 10th after the Astros, the trash cans, had scored
- 0:37Speaker 2: a run in the top of the 10th to take
- 0:38Speaker 2: a 5-4 lead. Mariners win 6-5. That was off of
- 0:41Speaker 2: Josh Hader who went two innings for Houston to try
- 0:44Speaker 2: to get the Mariners to put them to bed. They didn't.
- 0:47Speaker 2: The M's are still in it somehow, but only by mathematics.
- 0:50Speaker 2: They are four games out with four games left to play.
- 0:52Speaker 2: The only way the Mariners can make the playoffs is
- 0:54Speaker 2: to sweep the four-game series that begins tonight at the
- 0:56Speaker 2: yard in Soto against the Angels. Plus, the trash cans
- 1:00Speaker 2: must get swept in four games at the A's in Sacramento. Plus,
- 1:04Speaker 2: the Rangers must lose the day at home to the Mets. Plus,
- 1:07Speaker 2: the Rangers must get swept. You're telling me there's a chance.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Then the Rangers would have to get swept in three
- 1:13Speaker 2: this weekend by the Twins. If all that happens, if
- 1:19Speaker 2: lightning strikes, if a blue moon comes out and hits
- 1:21Speaker 2: a lightning. Sam Darnold practiced with the Seahawks for the
- 1:24Speaker 2: first time in two full weeks since he'd injured his
- 1:26Speaker 2: glute getting sacked on that fifth play of the season.
- 1:28Speaker 2: September 9th, he divided the first-team reps with Drew Locke,
- 1:32Speaker 2: limited practice participant for Darnold. How Darnold's body responds today
- 1:37Speaker 2: to that work will determine if he gets more first-team
- 1:39Speaker 2: reps in practice today, and that'll determine if it's going
- 1:42Speaker 2: to be Darnold or Locke. That starts Sunday at Washington.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Coach Mike McDonald says they'll make that decision by the
- 1:47Speaker 2: end of the day Friday. The team leaves Friday for
- 1:50Speaker 2: the game against the Commanders on Sunday in Maryland. Nicky
- 1:53Speaker 2: Manwari was a full go. Yesterday in practice, first time
- 1:56Speaker 2: in a game week he's been full go since two
- 1:58Speaker 2: days before the Super Bowl. McDonald says Eamon Worry is
- 2:01Speaker 2: going to get substantially more work and plays Sunday at Washington.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Eamon Worry told me Sunday in Arizona, his nine-snap season debut,
- 2:07Speaker 2: that that proves he's fully back and now he's playing
- 2:10Speaker 2: all the rest of the plays the rest of the season.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Rookie running back Jadarian Price practiced yesterday on a limited
- 2:15Speaker 2: basis three days after he left the Arizona game with
- 2:17Speaker 2: a shoulder injury. From what I could tell, he looked
- 2:19Speaker 2: pretty normal. Looks to me initially as if he's going
- 2:21Speaker 2: to play Sunday, though. Emmanuel Wilson proved that with his
- 2:24Speaker 2: 92-yard rushing day against the Cardinals, Price doesn't have to
- 2:27Speaker 2: do a full load Sunday if he's still hurting against
- 2:29Speaker 2: the Commanders. Zach Sarbanet, he's not going to return to
- 2:32Speaker 2: practice this week, as he is now eligible to. He
- 2:35Speaker 2: can't come off the pup list until after the fourth game.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Coach Mike McDonald said not this week for Sarbanet, so
- 2:40Speaker 2: that means his return to practice, at least not until
- 2:42Speaker 2: next week. That means pushes back his likely return to
- 2:45Speaker 2: maybe week five or six, seven. Sounders won. Sounders won.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Let's go.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Whoa! Franchise record 13 straight MLS matches without a win
- 2:57Speaker 2: is over. 2-0 last night over Real Salt Lake at
- 3:00Speaker 2: the stadium.
- 3:00Speaker 5: The Fighting Feltz.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Fighting Feltz is there. So he's not fighting as much
- 3:04Speaker 2: this morning, I guess, after 14 matches.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Yeah, not fighting, not furious. I'm going to call him
- 3:10Speaker 5: Genuine Jackson.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Wow.
- 3:13Speaker 5: I like the alliteration.
- 3:14Speaker 2: That's a droid alliteration there. Thank you. A droid! Hold on!
- 3:23Speaker 5: No, no, lunch.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Just for you, Jessamyn. The storm ended their WNBA season
- 3:29Speaker 2: with a loss at Dallas at Climate Pledge Arena. Seattle
- 3:32Speaker 2: won 8th and 36th this season. That's a league record
- 3:35Speaker 2: for losses. Now on with the Thursday show. Greg Bell
- 3:38Speaker 2: here out at Seahawk headquarters. Jessamyn McIntyre is back at
- 3:41Speaker 2: our LA-based studios in downtown Seattle. Good morning, ma'am.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Good morning. It's a Thursday?
- 3:47Speaker 3: It is.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Already?
- 3:48Speaker 5: We have football tonight?
- 3:50Speaker 2: We do.
- 3:51Speaker 5: And baseball tonight?
- 3:52Speaker 2: We do. That's right.
- 3:54Speaker 5: I call that a plethora.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Ooh, that's another good word.
- 3:57Speaker 5: Yeah, but that's from Three Amigos, so.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Not exactly known as a highbrow show.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I didn't go through thesaurus for that one.
- 4:09Speaker 2: 5.15 tonight on KGR. The Green Bay Packers are hosting
- 4:12Speaker 2: the Atlanta Falcons. That's the first game of week three
- 4:14Speaker 2: of the NFL season. And then, yes, the Mariners, mathematically
- 4:18Speaker 2: still alive. It just makes you think, like, if they
- 4:21Speaker 2: hadn't just punted, like, three months of the season, how
- 4:23Speaker 2: much further they would be, like, 10 games up and
- 4:25Speaker 2: clinched a couple weeks ago.
- 4:27Speaker 5: They could have just moderately made it through.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I said it. I was talking to Chris Egan and
- 4:33Speaker 2: Ariel Osuto yesterday on King 5 on their ultimate sports
- 4:37Speaker 2: show at 3 o'clock. And they were talking about the Mariners.
- 4:40Speaker 2: And I said, you know what? They could have backed
- 4:43Speaker 2: into this division title. And they could have backpedaled in
- 4:46Speaker 2: to win this division. It's about as it is. Under 500,
- 4:49Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken, is the first place right now
- 4:51Speaker 2: because the Rangers lost last night. And Houston lost last night.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I mean, a 500 team would be in first place. Anyway,
- 4:59Speaker 2: they're four games back with four games left. The Angels
- 5:02Speaker 2: are coming down tonight. Although we thought that was a
- 5:04Speaker 2: soft touch in the schedule a couple weeks ago. And
- 5:06Speaker 2: the Angels won the series down in Anaheim. But the
- 5:09Speaker 2: Mariners have to win all four games against The Angels
- 5:12Speaker 2: starting tonight through Sunday. While the Rangers have to lose
- 5:16Speaker 2: all four down in Sacramento to the A's. While the
- 5:20Speaker 2: Rangers have to lose tonight to the Mets. Today, actually.
- 5:23Speaker 2: They play on this morning, our time. To the Mets
- 5:25Speaker 2: and Arlington. And then have to lose three in a
- 5:28Speaker 2: row to the Twins. So, yeah. They're mathematically alive.
- 5:35Speaker 5: It would take one of those. Did you ever watch
- 5:37Speaker 5: the movie Angels in the Outfield?
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:40Speaker 5: I did. Yeah, we just need those wings going. Or
- 5:43Speaker 5: the tridents going. I don't know, like turn your arms
- 5:47Speaker 5: into tridents and flap them.
- 5:51Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I just don't know.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I don't know what the similar situation would be for that.
- 5:57Speaker 5: But they did it in Angels in the Outfield. Christopher
- 6:01Speaker 5: Lloyd came down.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Where's Christopher Lloyd when you need him? Back to the
- 6:05Speaker 2: Future and Angels in the Outfield. On the show today.
- 6:09Speaker 2: We're going to talk a little more about it. And
- 6:11Speaker 2: Jessup and I were talking offline about this. Maybe we
- 6:14Speaker 2: can put this story to bed today. But the Graham
- 6:16Speaker 2: Benzinger controversy with Mike McDonald. Graham Benzinger has gotten way
- 6:19Speaker 2: more than his five minutes of fame for this. And
- 6:23Speaker 2: he doesn't deserve it. He lacked complete ethics.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Fame cuts both ways, Greg.
- 6:28Speaker 2: That's true. It's cutting the hard way for him right now.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Graham Benzinger issued a statement last night describing his side
- 6:36Speaker 2: of the story. He said he'd gotten so many media requests.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Our show was trying to get him to. And he
- 6:41Speaker 2: just put out a blanket statement, which is kind of
- 6:43Speaker 2: a cop-out way to do it. Just write something on
- 6:45Speaker 2: the internet and don't face music about questions or anything.
- 6:47Speaker 2: But anyway, he put out a statement. We'll talk about
- 6:49Speaker 2: what he said. We'll talk about what Mike McDonald said about...
- 6:53Speaker 2: McDonald called Sean Payton on Tuesday night after this all
- 6:57Speaker 2: broke and apologized. Just told him, I'm sorry.
- 7:00Speaker 5: So classy.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I screwed up. He owned it. We're going to talk
- 7:04Speaker 2: about the vulnerability of Mike McDonald. He showed the world
- 7:06Speaker 2: yesterday where he shows the players all the time. Cooper
- 7:08Speaker 2: Cupp talked about that yesterday when I asked Cupp about it,
- 7:11Speaker 2: about the vulnerability piece and how unique that is for
- 7:14Speaker 2: Mike McDonald. But, yeah, McDonald just wore it. You'll hear
- 7:18Speaker 2: what McDonald said. You'll hear what Benzinger said. Ugh. We'll
- 7:23Speaker 2: also talk about where the Seahawks quarterback situation sits.
- 7:25Speaker 5: We don't need to hear him again.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Well, I will explain his side of the story. As
- 7:29Speaker 2: a journalist, I'm going to get both sides. So we'll
- 7:31Speaker 2: get Ben Suter's side.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Oh, the statement, not his voice.
- 7:34Speaker 2: No, no, I don't need to hear him. That guy,
- 7:37Speaker 2: it still, it boggles my mind that I'm out here.
- 7:41Speaker 2: We're out here. Not just me. What am I talking
- 7:43Speaker 2: about me? All of us on the Seahawks beat are
- 7:45Speaker 2: out here. Jessamyn's out here. Softie, Ian, all of us
- 7:47Speaker 2: who cover the Seahawks are out here all the time.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And nobody's bringing and inviting us to Mike McDonald's estate
- 7:53Speaker 2: on the 10 acres outside Seattle. And here's Graham Benziger,
- 7:56Speaker 2: who's never been here before. I've never seen him, ever.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I've covered this team for 20 years. I've never seen
- 8:00Speaker 2: this guy.
- 8:01Speaker 5: He does sensationalist things.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And he gets entree into McDonald's house. He's sitting in
- 8:08Speaker 2: the entryway to his home, and then he burns them
- 8:11Speaker 2: like this. I mean, just, you don't, if you like,
- 8:15Speaker 2: or just, Hugh and I were talking about this at
- 8:17Speaker 2: the roundtable this morning with Chuck. You don't– if you're
- 8:20Speaker 2: just a decent human being, you don't air that part
- 8:22Speaker 2: of it, right? It was obvious.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Yeah, we talked about it yesterday.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, just be– you know what right and wrong is,
- 8:27Speaker 2: and it's wrong. You're stabbing a dude in the back.
- 8:31Speaker 2: You know that in the fraternity of NFL coaches, if
- 8:33Speaker 2: you air that clip, it's going to be– to say
- 8:38Speaker 2: the least, it's not going to reflect well on Mike
- 8:40Speaker 2: McDonald if you air that clip. Yet you were invited
- 8:43Speaker 2: into his home, and then you just stab him in
- 8:45Speaker 2: the back by just airing this. It's crazy. I can't believe–
- 8:51Speaker 2: forget about the journalism ethics part of it. How about
- 8:53Speaker 2: just the human being part of it, just being a
- 8:55Speaker 2: good dude? And I can't believe he didn't have a
- 8:57Speaker 2: filter to say, well, if I air this, it's going
- 8:59Speaker 2: to put a lot of undue garbage onto Mike McDonald.
- 9:02Speaker 2: So let's just not air this part.
- 9:04Speaker 5: I mean we just talked about it yesterday, the things
- 9:07Speaker 5: that are not worth airing.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Right. What's the risk-reward equation? I talk to my kids
- 9:11Speaker 2: all the time about this. They're 23 now. So life's
- 9:14Speaker 2: full of risk-reward calculations. First of all, life's full of decisions.
- 9:17Speaker 2: As we all know, you make decisions every day.
- 9:20Speaker 5: And you learn from the bad ones.
- 9:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 9:22Speaker 2: And if you make the wrong one, you learn and
- 9:23Speaker 2: you face the consequences. It's part of accountability. But there
- 9:26Speaker 2: are also value judgments of risk versus reward. What's the
- 9:30Speaker 2: risk of doing this versus the reward of doing it?
- 9:33Speaker 2: So he's going to risk-reward calculation of all the clicks
- 9:37Speaker 2: and all the falling and all the notoriety we'll get
- 9:39Speaker 2: by playing all of this interview with a Super Bowl
- 9:42Speaker 2: champion head coach, including– This inside dirt, inside ball dirt
- 9:48Speaker 2: on Sean Payton, another Super Bowl winning coach from his
- 9:50Speaker 2: time at the Saints. I mean, the risk of it
- 9:53Speaker 2: is burning a guy that you just went into his
- 9:55Speaker 2: house and never being able to talk to him again,
- 9:58Speaker 2: potentially burning your chance to talk to anybody. else in
- 10:00Speaker 2: the NFL. I don't know why anybody would grant an
- 10:03Speaker 2: interview to this guy.
- 10:04Speaker 5: No, that was a lesson learned by everyone who saw it.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, there should be nobody in sports who
- 10:10Speaker 2: talks to this guy after this. How are you going
- 10:12Speaker 2: to get, he just got Mike McDonald got burned by
- 10:15Speaker 2: this guy. That's the risk reward calculation that Graham Benziger
- 10:18Speaker 2: apparently made and He chose for the reward of clicks
- 10:21Speaker 2: and notoriety, and now he's got his three days of
- 10:24Speaker 2: fame over this. We'll talk about the Seahawks quarterback situation
- 10:28Speaker 2: as it sits right now for the game Sunday at Arizona.
- 10:30Speaker 2: It's still cloudy. Today's going to tell a lot more.
- 10:33Speaker 2: And when I go on the field at about 115
- 10:35Speaker 2: to watch the start of practice, it's going to tell
- 10:36Speaker 2: me a lot more on how Sam Donald's body responded
- 10:40Speaker 2: to his first practice in two weeks. We'll talk 11
- 10:43Speaker 2: o'clock live to our guy Farhan Lalji, TSN Canada. He's
- 10:47Speaker 2: on his way down from the border. to Seahawks practice today.
- 10:50Speaker 2: He might get here in time to do this in
- 10:51Speaker 2: person at 11 o'clock, our weekly visit with him to
- 10:54Speaker 2: take us around. Oh, that'd be awesome. Yeah, he said
- 10:56Speaker 2: he was on his way here, and he might be
- 10:58Speaker 2: able to, but our instant Sarah Bell is listening. She's
- 11:03Speaker 2: on temporary duty on training in Virginia right now, and
- 11:05Speaker 2: she just sent me a text and said, Dad with
- 11:08Speaker 2: the T. I think that means something to the kids.
- 11:10Speaker 2: What does that mean?
- 11:11Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 11:11Speaker 2: I'm not a kid. She texted me a smiley face,
- 11:15Speaker 2: Dad with the T.
- 11:16Speaker 5: Dead with the tea?
- 11:18Speaker 2: TEA, like I was sipping tea.
- 11:20Speaker 5: Oh, with the tea. Yeah, that does mean something, yes.
- 11:23Speaker 2: What does that mean, Jessamyn?
- 11:25Speaker 5: The inside scoop.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 11:26Speaker 5: It's gossip, the inside scoop, that kind of thing.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I see Kermit the Frog sipping tea on memes. Is
- 11:32Speaker 2: that what they call it?
- 11:33Speaker 5: Yes, memes, but that's a little bit different. This is
- 11:36Speaker 5: none of my business. The meme is usually saying a
- 11:42Speaker 5: bunch of things that are very obvious and that no
- 11:46Speaker 5: one's talking about. But that's none of my business. And
- 11:49Speaker 5: so I'm just going to be Kermit the Frog and
- 11:51Speaker 5: sip some tea. But that's a different tea. That's a
- 11:54Speaker 5: different tea.
- 11:55Speaker 2: So thank you, Ensign Bell. I'm hip because I'm T-E-A-T.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I got the T. 425, appreciate you. Greg and Jess Bessinger.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Who is this guy? Exactly. Did any of you know
- 12:06Speaker 2: him before his recent brouhaha, Ralph? in Bellevue Crossroads. I
- 12:11Speaker 2: knew of him only because when Mariner Games would end,
- 12:13Speaker 2: his syndicated show, Benzinger's syndicated show, would sometimes come on
- 12:17Speaker 2: Root Sports. That's the only time, and I've seen him,
- 12:20Speaker 2: you know, talking to like, I don't know who he
- 12:23Speaker 2: talked to, Phil Mickelson, or he talked to people from
- 12:26Speaker 2: around the sports world. That's the only time I've known him.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I never watched his show, and I remember seeing him
- 12:31Speaker 2: come on after Mariner Games and thinking, who's this cat?
- 12:33Speaker 2: And then he had to go out to Mike McDonald's house,
- 12:37Speaker 2: and I'm like, what?
- 12:38Speaker 3: Who is that?
- 12:38Speaker 5: Well, that's how I knew who he was because I
- 12:40Speaker 5: would see these legendary interviews that he got. Legendary?
- 12:45Speaker 2: With who?
- 12:46Speaker 5: I mean, he was a Kobe. Just like, I wasn't
- 12:51Speaker 5: saying that his interviews were legendary. It's just the people
- 12:55Speaker 5: he would get. And I would, yes, with legend. That
- 12:58Speaker 5: is a very good correction there because I wasn't saying
- 13:01Speaker 5: that he's a legendary interview. I have no idea, Greg.
- 13:05Speaker 5: But that's my take on him was who the hell
- 13:08Speaker 5: is this guy? Because he was getting these amazing interviews.
- 13:12Speaker 5: And I don't know.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Is he paying? He must have some money. There could
- 13:17Speaker 2: be that.
- 13:17Speaker 5: I have been on his website, and he is with
- 13:21Speaker 5: Nate Boyer on his website.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Nate is a friend! We've got to talk to Nate
- 13:27Speaker 2: Boyer about this, Kat. We're going to talk to Nate
- 13:29Speaker 2: Boyer at the Army-Navy game. We do every year. In December,
- 13:32Speaker 2: we're going to talk to Nate Boyer. I'm going to
- 13:33Speaker 2: ask him, who the hell is Graham Benzinger? Why is
- 13:35Speaker 2: he going into Mike McDonald's house?
- 13:37Speaker 5: Nate is a loyal person, and he is very true,
- 13:40Speaker 5: and he will probably defend him. I'm not putting words
- 13:43Speaker 5: in his mouth, but He will explain it in a very,
- 13:47Speaker 5: very professional manner.
- 13:50Speaker 2: My daughter, Ensign Bell, just said, like spilling a tea,
- 13:52Speaker 2: like the tea is boiling hot. Ah, okay, Sarah. Thank you.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Well, you spill the tea. That's gossiping. That's putting it
- 13:59Speaker 5: out there.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Yes.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's usually my point.
- 14:03Speaker 5: Yes, boiling hot. Exactly.
- 14:05Speaker 2: All right. So at 11 o'clock, we'll talk to Farhan Lalji.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I'm going to talk about the Clint Kubiak Raiders. We'll
- 14:11Speaker 2: talk to him about the Chargers. Are they as bad
- 14:12Speaker 2: as they look? The Chargers have lost to the Cardinals
- 14:14Speaker 2: at home. And now the Raiders to be 0-2. Why
- 14:17Speaker 2: are we going to talk about the Chargers? Because that's
- 14:19Speaker 2: who the Seahawks play after Washington when they come back
- 14:22Speaker 2: home for a two-game homestand. They've got the Chargers and
- 14:25Speaker 2: 49ers back-to-back before they go to Denver on a Thursday
- 14:27Speaker 2: night on October the 15th to play the Broncos. At 1130,
- 14:31Speaker 2: we'll read back your texts and talkbacks on the Tacoma
- 14:33Speaker 2: Dodge text line 49451. And also your talkbacks. You go
- 14:36Speaker 2: to the iHeartRadio app or 933KJR. com. You hit the little
- 14:40Speaker 2: red microphone button under our show. And you leave a
- 14:44Speaker 2: 30-second or shorter voicemail message. Jessamyn McIntyre loves talkbacks. So
- 14:49Speaker 2: if you do a talkback, you're going to be on
- 14:50Speaker 2: the air. Guaranteed. I mean, we've had people singing. It
- 14:53Speaker 2: sounds like in the shower.
- 14:54Speaker 5: I love those ones, though. The creativity really is fun.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Yes.
- 14:58Speaker 5: It is.
- 14:58Speaker 2: It is. I just poke fun at it. But yes,
- 15:00Speaker 2: it is. We would love to have it on the show.
- 15:02Speaker 2: We'll do that at 1130. 1135 Factor Fiction brought to
- 15:04Speaker 2: you by the Bucky Eagle Casino Hotel. Jessamyn's NFL pick
- 15:09Speaker 2: will be today. We're leading the station today. There's no
- 15:12Speaker 2: surprise there. It should be. Justin and I are leading
- 15:15Speaker 2: the station. Those of you that remember my show from
- 15:17Speaker 2: a couple years ago know I had the most wins
- 15:20Speaker 2: on the station, so just hang with us. No Army
- 15:24Speaker 2: and Under this week, though. Not yet. Ian Furness will
- 15:26Speaker 2: join us at 1145 right here from Seahawk headquarters to
- 15:30Speaker 2: talk about what's on his show 12 until 3. And
- 15:33Speaker 2: the first question for the Tacoma Dodge text line, this
- 15:37Speaker 2: whole Graham-Benzinger thing, it's serving as a distraction at the moment,
- 15:40Speaker 2: but Your view of how Mike McDonald handled this and
- 15:44Speaker 2: apologizing and publicly declaring he apologized to Sean Payton, who
- 15:47Speaker 2: in Denver yesterday said, yep, he called me. We had
- 15:50Speaker 2: a great conversation. It's cool. I understand. And that was that. Jessamyn,
- 15:56Speaker 2: I saw what you wrote last night on Twitter X,
- 15:59Speaker 2: and I agree with you that this is an example
- 16:00Speaker 2: of two coaches handling this in a very civil and
- 16:04Speaker 2: professional way. Yes. And moving on. Yes, exactly.
- 16:08Speaker 5: And that's all they want to do. They clearly know
- 16:10Speaker 5: each other. And I thought that Mike McDonald's explanation of
- 16:14Speaker 5: it was kind of funny in the clip that aired
- 16:18Speaker 5: where they got through it. They got past it. It
- 16:21Speaker 5: was a funny gamesmanship thing. And there's friends and that,
- 16:27Speaker 5: you know, Sean was saying that he would get a
- 16:29Speaker 5: beer with John Schneider. And there he was just angry
- 16:34Speaker 5: in the moment. And that's what best friends do. If
- 16:38Speaker 5: you're that close to someone, I'm not saying they're best friends,
- 16:40Speaker 5: but what friends do, sometimes they get mad at each other.
- 16:43Speaker 5: And then you go have a beer. You just go
- 16:47Speaker 5: have a beer and everything's fine.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's real life. Peyton said he misunderstood at the
- 16:52Speaker 2: start that he thought that McDonald had somebody in the
- 16:54Speaker 2: crowd filming, like a mall, like a plant, like the
- 16:58Speaker 2: whole Michigan stealing signs thing. And he didn't realize this
- 17:02Speaker 2: was open source. He said that this experience... The episode
- 17:06Speaker 2: made him go look at what's out there from Broncos fans.
- 17:09Speaker 2: And Peyton explained yesterday it prompted him to change the
- 17:13Speaker 2: Broncos policies at training camp that you can't film the
- 17:17Speaker 2: entire practice, just like the Seahawks now have that rule.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Stemming from this incident, he said at the time when
- 17:22Speaker 2: he heard about this, he thought that McDonald and the
- 17:24Speaker 2: Seahawks were planting dudes in the crowd in Englewood, Colorado.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Which is entirely possible as well. You can go as
- 17:32Speaker 5: a fan. I mean, it's pretty inexpensive to go to
- 17:35Speaker 5: those camps anyway.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Right. But no, he said when he looked into it,
- 17:38Speaker 2: he was like, wait a minute. These are our Bronco
- 17:39Speaker 2: fans that are putting this stuff out. I didn't realize this.
- 17:42Speaker 2: That's what McDonald was doing and what he's talking about.
- 17:45Speaker 2: And that changed everything for Peyton. He said it. Sean
- 17:48Speaker 2: Payton said after that, oh, wait a minute. I've got
- 17:50Speaker 2: to clean in my own house, and we've got to
- 17:51Speaker 2: fix our own rules here. And he said he's done that,
- 17:54Speaker 2: and the Seahawks do that too. But some of the–
- 17:57Speaker 2: Sean Payton made it clear yesterday that he misunderstood when
- 18:02Speaker 2: he thought the Seahawks were cheating. He thought that McDonald
- 18:05Speaker 2: was actually putting dudes into the crowd and stealing stuff
- 18:10Speaker 2: with people, and that's not at all what happened. And
- 18:13Speaker 2: so that's what the misunderstanding and all this came from.
- 18:16Speaker 2: As we said, hopefully this is the last day we're
- 18:18Speaker 2: going to talk about this. But you are next going
- 18:20Speaker 2: to hear what Mike McDonald said yesterday because I thought
- 18:22Speaker 2: it was indicative of the vulnerability that he uses as
- 18:25Speaker 2: a leader. Cooper Cupp talked about that vulnerability as well.
- 18:29Speaker 2: And we'll read, for the sake of journalism and playing
- 18:31Speaker 2: both sides of this, we'll read Graham Benzinger's statement next.
- 18:34Speaker 2: At 11 o'clock, Farhan Lalji from TSN Canada will take
- 18:37Speaker 2: us around the NFL. 1135 Factor Fiction is your chance
- 18:41Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino. All that's
- 18:43Speaker 2: coming up today. on a football Thursday from Seahawks headquarters
- 18:46Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back. Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre with you.
- 19:15Speaker 2: I'm at Seahawks headquarters three days before the Seahawks play
- 19:18Speaker 2: the Commanders. We'll have a press conference with... It'll be
- 19:21Speaker 2: interesting today, actually. They're going to bring Sam Donald out
- 19:24Speaker 2: as the starting quarterback press conference. The weekly starting quarterback
- 19:26Speaker 2: press conference is usually noon and Thursday.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Yeah, this is kind of a breaking news situation.
- 19:33Speaker 2: I would suspect, since Donald's back practicing, it's going to
- 19:36Speaker 2: be Sam Donald we talk to at 12 noon, and
- 19:38Speaker 2: if so, Ian Frenes might have a say or two
- 19:41Speaker 2: on what Donald had to say, or I might pop
- 19:43Speaker 2: in and talk to Ian Furness. Look at you.
- 19:46Speaker 5: Team player.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Yeah, he's been doing that a couple days. of weeks now,
- 19:51Speaker 2: popping in and coming on the show about what the
- 19:53Speaker 2: press conference has revealed. Yesterday, Mike McDonald had his weekly
- 19:56Speaker 2: Wednesday press conference, and in it, he talked about what
- 20:01Speaker 2: he thought was off the record, not for public consumption
- 20:04Speaker 2: comments about Sean Payton alleging the Seahawks were cheating. when
- 20:09Speaker 2: they got open source fan video of Broncos training camp
- 20:13Speaker 2: and cultivated a hundred plays that the Broncos were running
- 20:16Speaker 2: in training camp before the Broncos and Seahawks played the
- 20:19Speaker 2: 2024 opener. Sean Payton accused the Seahawks of cheating in that.
- 20:23Speaker 2: And that wasn't supposed to air in McDonald's mind. He
- 20:25Speaker 2: made that clear yesterday. This was what Mike McDonald said
- 20:27Speaker 2: about the Graham Benzinger interview in his home, including the
- 20:30Speaker 2: comments about Sean Payton. And then after that, you can
- 20:34Speaker 2: hear from Cooper Cup about the vulnerability the coach shows
- 20:36Speaker 2: here when he explained how he fell short mike what
- 20:40Speaker 2: was your reaction to the stuff that came out yesterday
- 20:42Speaker 2: the video being released oh.
- 20:44Speaker 7: Yeah um you know it's um it's something that i
- 20:48Speaker 7: uh i didn't intend for for public use and um
- 20:52Speaker 7: but you know it just uh thought it was the
- 20:55Speaker 7: most appropriate thing to reach out to sean and really
- 20:58Speaker 7: just apologize to him for having that end up be
- 21:01Speaker 7: public where it wasn't meant to um So I just,
- 21:06Speaker 7: and you know, you're kind of something that they have
- 21:08Speaker 7: to deal with in real time. That wasn't really, you know,
- 21:11Speaker 7: on their end.
- 21:11Speaker 8: So that's, that's really where you're like crap.
- 21:14Speaker 7: But, um, it's a lesson learned, you know, honestly, it's,
- 21:19Speaker 7: I gotta be, I gotta be better in that moment
- 21:21Speaker 7: for understanding. Like I'm look, I'm responsible for what I
- 21:24Speaker 7: say really no matter the circumstance, whether you're mic'd up,
- 21:27Speaker 7: whether you're not, whether you have some certain type of understanding, um, So,
- 21:32Speaker 7: you know, I fell short of that moment. So it's a, it's,
- 21:35Speaker 7: it stings for me, frankly, but it's something that I'm
- 21:38Speaker 7: definitely gonna learn from. And, uh, just a good example
- 21:42Speaker 7: that we just, you know, you got to take responsibility
- 21:45Speaker 7: for the things that we say.
- 21:46Speaker 2: So. Can you tell us what was Sean's reaction?
- 21:49Speaker 8: Sean was great. Sean was great.
- 21:50Speaker 7: He's, um, I just, I'll say, I really, I just,
- 21:53Speaker 7: I respect the heck out of him and his program.
- 21:55Speaker 8: I always have.
- 21:56Speaker 7: He's a phenomenal football coach. It's been, it's been great
- 21:58Speaker 7: to get to know him at the owner's meetings the
- 22:00Speaker 7: last couple of years.
- 22:02Speaker 8: Um, And he was awesome.
- 22:04Speaker 7: So I know we're both looking forward to moving forward
- 22:06Speaker 7: from it, but I really appreciate how he handled it.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Can you help us understand the circumstances?
- 22:11Speaker 9: Were you just kind of shooting the breeze with Graham
- 22:13Speaker 9: before you thought everything was rolling?
- 22:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Is it okay if this is all on the record?
- 22:24Speaker 7: I think it's fair to say if I'm talking, I'm
- 22:28Speaker 7: responsible for what I'm saying.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Did you hear from anybody from the show About how
- 22:34Speaker 2: it got out or anything like that?
- 22:36Speaker 7: It's not important on all those details.
- 22:38Speaker 8: It's just that it got out.
- 22:40Speaker 2: I was trying to make light of it and just
- 22:44Speaker 2: make him laugh when I said, is this all on
- 22:48Speaker 2: the record?
- 22:48Speaker 5: I was hoping that he would open his presser saying that.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Exactly. You did mention that yesterday. In fact, he did.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Mike McDonald did hear from Graham Benzinger's show. And knew
- 23:00Speaker 2: that this was coming out, and he actually found out
- 23:02Speaker 2: the morning of it coming out. And this was Graham
- 23:06Speaker 2: Benzinger last night. He issued a statement on TwitterX in print.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Due to ongoing media requests for comment, I want to
- 23:13Speaker 2: clarify the timeline surrounding a portion of our recent interview
- 23:16Speaker 2: with Mike McDonald that has received attention this week. The
- 23:19Speaker 2: complete Mike McDonald interview, including the conversation now at issue,
- 23:22Speaker 2: was provided to Seahawks PR last Wednesday, September 16th, five
- 23:27Speaker 2: days before it was published on YouTube. During that time,
- 23:30Speaker 2: no concern was raised about the exchange, and we were
- 23:32Speaker 2: never asked to remove it. For the last couple of years,
- 23:35Speaker 2: our typical practice with long-form interview releases has been to
- 23:38Speaker 2: include some of the pre-interview conversation.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Which some shows do, to be fair. Some shows do,
- 23:48Speaker 5: but usually you're aware of it.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Yes, you better go to the subject and say, hey,
- 23:52Speaker 2: we're going to air some of this pre-interview conversation. Are
- 23:55Speaker 2: you cool with it? And McDonald, in this case, would
- 23:57Speaker 2: have said, no. That was off the record. That's not
- 24:00Speaker 2: meant for public. You heard the coach say yesterday I
- 24:02Speaker 2: wasn't meant for public consumption. Graham Bensinger's statement went on
- 24:06Speaker 2: to say, Coach McDonald reached out to me directly yesterday morning,
- 24:09Speaker 2: meaning Tuesday morning, expressing concern. I immediately told him that
- 24:13Speaker 2: we would remove that portion, and we did. Unfortunately, it
- 24:16Speaker 2: had already been clipped from our interview by online outlets
- 24:19Speaker 2: and circulated elsewhere. I told Coach that in hindsight, excuse me,
- 24:23Speaker 2: in hindsight, I regretted allowing that exchange to be included,
- 24:27Speaker 2: and it was my error in judgment. I have tremendous
- 24:30Speaker 2: respect for Coach. We spent significant time together in Seattle
- 24:33Speaker 2: one day, and I came away impressed not only by
- 24:37Speaker 2: what he has accomplished in such a short period of time,
- 24:39Speaker 2: but by the person he is. The last thing I
- 24:40Speaker 2: want to do is for one exchange to overshadow that story.
- 24:44Speaker 2: I also have great respect for Sean Payton, whom I've
- 24:46Speaker 2: had the opportunity to profile previously from Graham Benzinger yesterday,
- 24:50Speaker 2: for what that is worth. I asked Cooper Cup about
- 24:54Speaker 2: the vulnerability you heard Mike McDonald saying. I fell short
- 24:58Speaker 2: in that moment. And it stings, frankly. That's some vulnerability
- 25:02Speaker 2: for a head coach to say.
- 25:04Speaker 5: It's honesty.
- 25:06Speaker 2: It is. It's true him. And that's what Mike McDonald
- 25:08Speaker 2: shows with his players. This was Cooper Cup talking about
- 25:10Speaker 2: the vulnerability of the leader, Mike McDonald.
- 25:13Speaker 10: Mike McDonald's vulnerability that he shows the players. Is that
- 25:19Speaker 10: unusual in your football career? experience and leadership and what
- 25:22Speaker 10: is it what are you left thinking when he is
- 25:25Speaker 10: vulnerable and say i screwed up or if it's some shortcoming.
- 25:27Speaker 9: Yeah well i think that's uh you know mike is
- 25:32Speaker 9: um he chooses to be himself at all times and
- 25:39Speaker 9: i think that's a very powerful thing and something that
- 25:42Speaker 9: you know people have a lot of respect for um
- 25:45Speaker 9: because you know he's you're gonna get him you're gonna
- 25:49Speaker 9: get exactly what he thinks and know There's no smoke
- 25:51Speaker 9: and mirrors. It calls people up to a great standard.
- 25:59Speaker 9: When you're at the very top, you can be accountable.
- 26:01Speaker 9: When you're at the very top, you can be vulnerable.
- 26:02Speaker 9: When you can say, I messed up, I can be
- 26:04Speaker 9: better for you. When you have guys that just share
- 26:07Speaker 9: how they're feeling. It opens the door for everyone else
- 26:11Speaker 9: to step into that same spot. When you've got a
- 26:13Speaker 9: team of accountable players, you can be a very powerful unit.
- 26:19Speaker 9: you know, he leads the way for us and calls
- 26:21Speaker 9: everyone up to that standard.
- 26:22Speaker 2: And, yeah, it's a very special thing. Have you had
- 26:25Speaker 2: a leader in your football life like that?
- 26:28Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 26:28Speaker 2: I mean, there is, yeah.
- 26:29Speaker 9: I mean, Mike is very unique in terms of, like, his–
- 26:33Speaker 9: I think he is unique in terms of some of that, like,
- 26:36Speaker 9: vulnerability stuff that you've talked about. But, you know, I
- 26:40Speaker 9: think just about every great leader that– great coach, great
- 26:45Speaker 9: leader that I've been able to– either share the field
- 26:47Speaker 9: with or be coached by, has.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Some of those qualities. I'm 33 years old, two-time Super
- 26:54Speaker 2: Bowl champion, NFL Offensive Player of the Year and Super
- 26:58Speaker 2: Bowl MVP for the Rams in 2021. Talking about Mike
- 27:01Speaker 2: McDonald and the vulnerability he shows with the players, and
- 27:05Speaker 2: as he showed some of yesterday as well. 49451 on
- 27:08Speaker 2: the Comodage text line. Your reaction to all of that,
- 27:12Speaker 2: how you feel about how your Seattle Seahawks coach handled
- 27:15Speaker 2: this situation?
- 27:18Speaker 5: Please give me the talk back. I'm sitting here by
- 27:20Speaker 5: my lonesome.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yeah, she's in the studio by herself.
- 27:23Speaker 5: By darkness retreat. I'm very Aaron Rodgers right now.
- 27:27Speaker 2: I'm over here at Seahawk headquarters. And you heard Mike
- 27:30Speaker 2: McDonald say it, but both he and Sean Payton are
- 27:33Speaker 2: very anxious to just, let's get on with the football now.
- 27:36Speaker 2: This is a product of Jessamine not being games, but
- 27:41Speaker 2: One every seven days. From Sunday to Sunday. And what
- 27:44Speaker 2: do people talk about? What becomes news in between those games?
- 27:48Speaker 2: The news will shift here now from this. Now remember,
- 27:50Speaker 2: it came out on a Tuesday, the off day of
- 27:52Speaker 2: the NFL Sunday to Sunday game week. The players didn't practice.
- 27:56Speaker 2: There were no injury reports. So this filled that void.
- 28:00Speaker 2: This is how the NFL news cycle works. But now
- 28:03Speaker 2: we're getting into the game week. It's Thursday. There's three
- 28:05Speaker 2: days until they play at Washington. And now the story
- 28:07Speaker 2: will change to Sam Darnold, does he come back to
- 28:11Speaker 2: back for a second day in a row of practice
- 28:13Speaker 2: two weeks after the glute injury? How many snaps does
- 28:16Speaker 2: he get? And Thursday, first team reps, how much did
- 28:20Speaker 2: he get? He was limited yesterday. And that will point
- 28:23Speaker 2: toward how likely it is that he starts on Sunday.
- 28:27Speaker 2: And as we've said, and Mike McDonald himself has said,
- 28:29Speaker 2: if he's healthy, Darnold is starting on Sunday against the commanders,
- 28:33Speaker 2: the 0-2 commanders who are going to start backup quarterback
- 28:36Speaker 2: Marcus Mariota. That will all now become And this will
- 28:41Speaker 2: recede to the back, at least we hope so. And
- 28:45Speaker 2: then it'll come back up again in three weeks because
- 28:47Speaker 2: the Seahawks and Broncos are going to play each other
- 28:49Speaker 2: on a Thursday night on Amazon Prime in a Thursday
- 28:52Speaker 2: night showcase game. And McDonald and Payton will probably be
- 28:58Speaker 2: revisiting this conversation and the apology and their relationship and
- 29:02Speaker 2: all of that in a few weeks. But fortunately that week,
- 29:06Speaker 2: there'll be only three days between games. The Seahawks and
- 29:09Speaker 2: the Broncos both play on that Sunday. The Seahawks play
- 29:11Speaker 2: the 49ers in week five before Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, get
- 29:15Speaker 2: on a plane Wednesday to fly to Denver for a
- 29:17Speaker 2: Thursday game. So at least the circus of this will
- 29:20Speaker 2: be much shorter without seven days between games. But that's
- 29:24Speaker 2: the way it is. I mean, that's just how it is.
- 29:28Speaker 5: I'd be remiss if I didn't say what a great
- 29:30Speaker 5: question that was to Cooper Cupp. Just hearing a player
- 29:33Speaker 5: who is a veteran who played against the Seahawks for
- 29:37Speaker 5: a long time and now plays for them. to hear
- 29:40Speaker 5: him talk about a coach he clearly has a lot
- 29:43Speaker 5: of knowledge and experience with head coaches and I thought
- 29:46Speaker 5: that was a great question and a great person to
- 29:49Speaker 5: give his perspective on it so I really appreciate that
- 29:53Speaker 5: and I thought that Cooper said it perfectly.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you. I appreciate that. I thought Cup would
- 29:59Speaker 2: give a unique perspective to that, especially because he came
- 30:02Speaker 2: up to podium right after McDonald just talked about it.
- 30:05Speaker 2: But we've seen examples, you saw it on Hard Knocks,
- 30:07Speaker 2: examples of McDonald being vulnerable. O.J. Brignance, his friend from
- 30:12Speaker 2: the Baltimore Ravens who passed away recently and talking about
- 30:15Speaker 2: that and tearing up in front of the team talking
- 30:17Speaker 2: about that. That's the vulnerability piece of the talking about
- 30:20Speaker 2: if you missed the context to that. But 49451, we
- 30:23Speaker 2: will read back your text. And Marcus, a longtime friend
- 30:27Speaker 2: of the show and the station at 206, writing, I
- 30:29Speaker 2: think they did send it to the Seahawks. That's what
- 30:31Speaker 2: Graham Benziger claims. That's too easy to be verified as
- 30:34Speaker 2: false if they didn't. Well, that's true. And honestly, Marcus,
- 30:38Speaker 2: I'm at the point where I don't know if I
- 30:39Speaker 2: care enough to ask the PR director of the Seahawks
- 30:42Speaker 2: if that's true. I probably will and maybe in passing.
- 30:44Speaker 2: But yeah, some of you may want to know if
- 30:49Speaker 2: Graham Benziger is telling the truth there.
- 30:50Speaker 5: I don't think he's shuffling blame around.
- 30:53Speaker 2: To be honest. It would certainly seem like it. I
- 30:56Speaker 2: don't know why anyone in Seattle would give Graham Benzinger
- 30:59Speaker 2: some benefit of the doubt on this at this point,
- 31:01Speaker 2: but whatever. But it bears repeating that those of us
- 31:06Speaker 2: that cover Mike McDonald every day know things that are
- 31:10Speaker 2: clearly off the record. Without Mike McDonald saying, hey, this
- 31:12Speaker 2: is off the record, he has told us stuff in
- 31:15Speaker 2: settings that were obviously not for public use. As recently
- 31:18Speaker 2: as last month in Nashville, when we sat with him
- 31:21Speaker 2: for an hour and a half in the team hotel
- 31:23Speaker 2: before the preseason game, a day before the preseason game
- 31:28Speaker 2: against the Titans, an hour and a half worth of
- 31:31Speaker 2: off-the-record talk, just informing the beat and getting to know
- 31:34Speaker 2: the coach a little bit. And he revealed stuff in
- 31:37Speaker 2: there that none of us have revealed or talked about
- 31:40Speaker 2: or printed, and nor should we, because we would have
- 31:44Speaker 2: a hard time doing our job, not to mention the
- 31:47Speaker 2: professional relationship that we have with the head coach of
- 31:49Speaker 2: the team we cover. I mean, Graham Benzinger did what
- 31:53Speaker 2: he did because he doesn't have to face the music
- 31:55Speaker 2: of dealing with Mike McDonald every day. He goes on
- 31:58Speaker 2: to his next interview in his next town and doesn't
- 32:01Speaker 2: have the accountability piece that those of us who deal
- 32:04Speaker 2: with Mike McDonald on a daily basis do. Right.
- 32:07Speaker 5: So he doesn't need that access and he doesn't have
- 32:10Speaker 5: a relationship.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:11Speaker 2: And McDonald, you heard him say, no matter what I
- 32:14Speaker 2: thought the conditions were, He learned a hard lesson of
- 32:18Speaker 2: somebody who doesn't have a stake in daily coverage of
- 32:21Speaker 2: me is not going to be like the beat writers are.
- 32:25Speaker 2: He's got the trust.
- 32:26Speaker 5: I mean, he's still new as a head coach.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Absolutely. He's the first time head coach. It was 36
- 32:31Speaker 2: when he took the job. He had never had it
- 32:32Speaker 2: at any level been a head coach, not high school,
- 32:34Speaker 2: not college, not pro. And now here he is. But
- 32:37Speaker 2: he has a level of trust with us as beat
- 32:39Speaker 2: writers that obviously he had projected onto others in journalism.
- 32:43Speaker 2: And Graham Benzinger doesn't fit in that realm at all.
- 32:46Speaker 2: And he doesn't have the same stakes that we do. So, no.
- 32:50Speaker 2: He can feel like he doesn't. Maybe Graham Bensinger doesn't
- 32:54Speaker 2: even have the mental calculus to say, wait a minute.
- 32:57Speaker 2: I'm going to burn him if I use this in
- 32:59Speaker 2: air this. Where those of us who deal with Mike
- 33:02Speaker 2: McDonald and the Seahawks on a daily basis absolutely would
- 33:04Speaker 2: have that compass and say no. There have been a
- 33:06Speaker 2: couple things. I mentioned that story yesterday. There was something
- 33:10Speaker 2: about a player in practice about three weeks ago. that
- 33:14Speaker 2: Mike McDonald didn't want us to see. And it came
- 33:16Speaker 2: out during the public portion of the practice. And he
- 33:19Speaker 2: came over and made it clear that to the PR
- 33:21Speaker 2: staff that he, they didn't want us to report this.
- 33:24Speaker 2: And we shouldn't have been out here when this happened
- 33:25Speaker 2: and the viewing period. And we all as a beat decided, well,
- 33:28Speaker 2: we're not printing this. We're not, we're not going to
- 33:31Speaker 2: show the video of this and we're not printing this
- 33:34Speaker 2: because I, as I said to the beat, why are
- 33:36Speaker 2: we going to burn the head coach before week one
- 33:39Speaker 2: of the season and that we've gotten along great with.
- 33:44Speaker 2: It wasn't that bad.
- 33:44Speaker 5: Is this not worth it?
- 33:45Speaker 2: Exactly. The risk-reward calculation there was not at all in
- 33:48Speaker 2: our favor to reveal it, so we didn't. None of
- 33:50Speaker 2: us wrote or printed or anything, and everything was fine.
- 33:53Speaker 2: It was no big deal. And the next day, Mike
- 33:56Speaker 2: McDonald came up to us and said, hey guys, thanks
- 33:58Speaker 2: for doing me a solid there. He knew. He knew
- 34:01Speaker 2: we could have printed it. He knew we could have
- 34:03Speaker 2: run the video. None of us did. And he came
- 34:06Speaker 2: over and thanked us for it. And I've done this
- 34:09Speaker 2: for a few days, like 25 years, and I can
- 34:12Speaker 2: count on half of one hand how many times that's happened.
- 34:16Speaker 2: So that's how the daily relationship between the media and
- 34:22Speaker 2: the head coach of an NFL team work. This Graham
- 34:25Speaker 2: Benzinger is just a parachuting in, hit piece, leave. Up next.
- 34:31Speaker 2: What are we going to go to next? Not this.
- 34:34Speaker 5: Let's pivot.
- 34:35Speaker 2: I think we're done with Graham. We're done with Graham.
- 34:38Speaker 2: He got his three minutes of fame. Again, I just
- 34:41Speaker 2: see on the text line, people say, you don't know
- 34:42Speaker 2: who Graham Benzinger is? It's a TV show. Well, just
- 34:44Speaker 2: because you have a TV show doesn't mean you should
- 34:46Speaker 2: be famous.
- 34:46Speaker 5: Nobody has cable anymore, man. Well, let's talk about who
- 34:50Speaker 5: the starting quarterback might be.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Sam Donald's rear end, Drew Locke getting first-team reps in
- 34:55Speaker 2: practice still, and where the Seahawks quarterback situation is right now,
- 34:58Speaker 2: three days before they play at Washington. That's next on
- 35:00Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back. Greg Bell is at the
- 35:28Speaker 2: Seahawks headquarters. Jessamyn McIntyre is back at LA Bay Studios.
- 35:31Speaker 5: Did you just start in person?
- 35:33Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry. I, Greg Bell, am at the Mason Athletic Center.
- 35:39Speaker 5: I'm just having fun with it. Yeah, no problem.
- 35:42Speaker 2: You should. Check me at the door. Thank you. So
- 35:45Speaker 2: at Dune, the starting quarterback usually talks on Thursdays. for
- 35:49Speaker 2: the week, but now who's the starting quarterback? Is it
- 35:51Speaker 2: Sam Donald? Is it Drew Locke? Are we going to
- 35:53Speaker 2: get both of them at the podium? One after the
- 35:55Speaker 2: other at the same time? I remember one time Richard
- 35:57Speaker 2: Sherman and Doug Baldwin came to the podium at the
- 35:59Speaker 2: same time to rip on Roger Goodell in the NFL.
- 36:02Speaker 5: Oh my gosh.
- 36:03Speaker 2: That was epic.
- 36:04Speaker 5: That was epic.
- 36:05Speaker 2: That was great. He had a cardboard cutout of Pepsi.
- 36:08Speaker 2: It was great. Anyway, who are they going to have?
- 36:11Speaker 2: Are they going to have Drew Locke? Because he took
- 36:13Speaker 2: first team reps yesterday. Well, today's how Sam Donald feels today.
- 36:17Speaker 2: after practicing for the first time in two weeks after
- 36:20Speaker 2: his strained glute in the opener, how he feels today
- 36:23Speaker 2: is going to tell a lot because if he feels
- 36:25Speaker 2: good enough, he's going to get more first-team reps today.
- 36:28Speaker 2: And if he gets more first-team reps, they're going to
- 36:30Speaker 2: point him towards starting because you don't give a quarterback
- 36:33Speaker 2: reps during the week if he's not going to play.
- 36:36Speaker 2: So today will be the telltale. Here's where it stands.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Darnold coming back from practice was a limited participant yesterday.
- 36:43Speaker 2: They officially listed him as that on the NFL practice
- 36:45Speaker 2: participation report because NFL rules are If you don't do
- 36:49Speaker 2: your normal load of repetitions in a practice, no matter
- 36:53Speaker 2: what player you are, then you have to be counted
- 36:55Speaker 2: as limited. And Sam Darnold, of course, normally when he practices,
- 36:57Speaker 2: gets every one of the reps with the starting offense.
- 37:00Speaker 2: So the fact that he didn't make him a limited
- 37:02Speaker 2: participant yesterday. So it's an unusual situation that the Seahawks
- 37:05Speaker 2: are going through right now of having Darnold and Locke splitting.
- 37:08Speaker 2: I don't even know if it's splitting 50-50, maybe just
- 37:10Speaker 2: dividing is a more accurate term. The first team reps, Darnold,
- 37:15Speaker 2: of course, has watched Locke complete 73% of his passes
- 37:19Speaker 2: and be the second best passer rating quarterback in the
- 37:21Speaker 2: league in the seven and a half quarters he's played
- 37:24Speaker 2: this season for the injured Darnold. And so if Darnold
- 37:28Speaker 2: is not fully ready to play, as in today he
- 37:31Speaker 2: still feels sore, doesn't feel quite right, the Seahawks would
- 37:34Speaker 2: have no problem at all with Drew Locke starting against
- 37:37Speaker 2: Washington on Sunday, not with the defense, especially the way
- 37:40Speaker 2: they're playing. But McDonald has said if the Sam Darnold
- 37:45Speaker 2: is healthy to play. He's playing. They're not going to
- 37:47Speaker 2: go extra cautious or because the 0-2 commanders are the
- 37:50Speaker 2: backup quarterback or because the Seahawks defense is only allowed
- 37:53Speaker 2: 17 points total in two games. They're not going to
- 37:56Speaker 2: give Darnold another week just for the sake of giving
- 37:58Speaker 2: him another week. If he's ready to play, he's going
- 38:00Speaker 2: to play. So that's where it stands. We'll know more today,
- 38:04Speaker 2: but it will be interesting to see how the Seahawks
- 38:06Speaker 2: PR staff and team handles this.
- 38:10Speaker 5: I was just going to ask you, too, because this
- 38:14Speaker 5: goes way beyond the PR staff and it goes to
- 38:16Speaker 5: the coaching and John Schneider as well. Just how much
- 38:20Speaker 5: gamesmanship do you think is being played right now?
- 38:23Speaker 2: And we're going to find out at noon because if
- 38:25Speaker 2: they bring both Darnold and Sam Darnold and Drew Locke,
- 38:28Speaker 2: that would be ultimate engagement.
- 38:30Speaker 5: I would love it if they did that. I would
- 38:31Speaker 5: love it if they did that. And I know that
- 38:33Speaker 5: Jaden Daniels is hurt and Marcus Mariota is starting and
- 38:36Speaker 5: the commanders are 0-2. But just every edge. He chases
- 38:42Speaker 5: edges and I would love it.
- 38:44Speaker 2: If I was the head coach and the PR director,
- 38:46Speaker 2: that's what I would do. I would bring them both out.
- 38:48Speaker 2: I would too. I would. I don't know if they'll
- 38:51Speaker 2: do that, but that's what I would do. We're going
- 38:53Speaker 2: to find out in about an hour's time. Up next,
- 38:56Speaker 2: we're going to find out from Farhan Lalji what's around
- 38:58Speaker 2: the NFL, including Clint Kubiak's 2-0 Raiders, Jim Harbaugh's 0-2
- 39:04Speaker 2: Chargers who come into Seattle next week, how he feels
- 39:08Speaker 2: about the quarterback injuries around the league and Seattle's situation
- 39:11Speaker 2: at backup quarterback that is better than anybody's. Farhan Lalji,
- 39:14Speaker 2: TSN Canada. will join us next on his weekly segment
- 39:18Speaker 2: with us on 93.3 KJRFM. Good morning. Happy Thursday. Headlines
- 39:41Speaker 2: are brought to you by Frostbrew Coors Light. As cold
- 39:43Speaker 2: as the Rockies, the Mariners aren't mathematically eliminated. Not yet.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Josh Naylor's two-run single with the bases loaded in the
- 39:49Speaker 2: 10th inning last night off Houston closer Josh Hader sent
- 39:53Speaker 2: the M's over to the trash cans at the yard
- 39:54Speaker 2: in Soto 6-5. The Mariners are four games out with
- 39:58Speaker 2: four games to play. The only way that they make
- 40:01Speaker 2: the playoffs is to sweep a four-game series that begins
- 40:03Speaker 2: tonight at the yard against the Angels while the trash
- 40:07Speaker 2: cans must get swept in four games at the A's
- 40:09Speaker 2: that starts tonight in Sacramento. Plus, the Rangers must lose
- 40:13Speaker 2: this morning, starting this morning, in about a half hour
- 40:15Speaker 2: at home against the Mets. plus get swept in three
- 40:19Speaker 2: straight this weekend by the Twins. That's the only way
- 40:22Speaker 2: they get in. Other than that, they're eliminated. Sam Darnold
- 40:25Speaker 2: practiced with his Seahawks for the first time in two
- 40:27Speaker 2: weeks yesterday since he injured his glute getting sacked on
- 40:29Speaker 2: the fifth play of the season. Divided the first team
- 40:33Speaker 2: reps with Drew Locke, so he was listed as a
- 40:35Speaker 2: limited practice participant. How Darnold's body responds today to that
- 40:39Speaker 2: work is going to determine if he gets more first
- 40:41Speaker 2: team reps in practice today, and that will determine if
- 40:44Speaker 2: it's Darnold or Locke. Starts for the Seahawks Sunday at Washington.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Coach Mike McDonald says they'll make that decision by the
- 40:50Speaker 2: end of the day Friday. The team flies Friday to Washington,
- 40:53Speaker 2: the D.C. area, for the game Sunday. Nick Emanuari was
- 40:56Speaker 2: full go yesterday at a game week practice for the
- 40:58Speaker 2: first time since days before the Super Bowl in February.
- 41:01Speaker 2: McDonald says Emanuari is going to get substantially more work
- 41:05Speaker 2: in place Sunday at Washington than he did in a
- 41:07Speaker 2: nine-snap debut in Arizona last weekend. Emanuari told me after
- 41:12Speaker 2: that game in the desert he's fully back. and he
- 41:15Speaker 2: intends to play all the snaps with the starting defense
- 41:17Speaker 2: the rest of the season. Rookie running back Jadarian Price
- 41:20Speaker 2: limited yesterday in practice three days after he left the
- 41:22Speaker 2: Arizona game with a shoulder injury. He looked pretty normal
- 41:25Speaker 2: to me in the initial part of practice. Signs are
- 41:27Speaker 2: he may play on Sunday, though Emmanuel Wilson is going
- 41:30Speaker 2: to get some more run after his 92-yard rushing day
- 41:33Speaker 2: against the Cardinals. Zach Charbonnet is eligible to return to
- 41:36Speaker 2: practice off the Physically Unable to Perform list, but he
- 41:38Speaker 2: did not and will not return to practice this week.
- 41:42Speaker 2: He can't play until after week four. Anyway, NFL week
- 41:45Speaker 2: three begins tonight. Falcons at Packers in Lambeau Field live
- 41:49Speaker 2: here on 93.3 KJR starting at 515. Hey, the Sounders won.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Their MLS record 13 straight matches without a win.
- 41:58Speaker 5: Let's go, genuine Jacksons.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Yeah, they won. It's over. The winless streak is over
- 42:04Speaker 2: 2-0 of Real Salt Lake last night. The Storm ended
- 42:08Speaker 2: their WNBA season with a loss to Dallas at Climate
- 42:11Speaker 2: Pledge Arena. Seattle went 8-36 this season. The Storm will
- 42:15Speaker 2: finish the exhibition season this weekend. They've got a game
- 42:18Speaker 2: tomorrow at Climate Pledge. They play a game this weekend.
- 42:21Speaker 2: And then October 1st, Tuesday, is opening day for the
- 42:25Speaker 2: Kraken at Calgary. Speaking of Canada, speaking of pucks, speaking
- 42:30Speaker 2: of the NFL. Farhan Laws, you can see us in Canada.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Our weekly guest joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline,
- 42:37Speaker 2: where I think he's somewhere in the Seattle metropolitan area
- 42:40Speaker 2: on his way here to Seahawks headquarters. Good morning, sir.
- 42:44Speaker 3: How are you? I know you can't say speaking of
- 42:46Speaker 3: puck with me. You know me. I'm a football guy.
- 42:49Speaker 4: Hockey is my necessary evil when I'm only back in Canada.
- 42:52Speaker 4: If I had come 15 minutes earlier, I could have
- 42:55Speaker 4: just sat down like I'm literally going to finish this
- 42:56Speaker 4: segment and then walk in and.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Give you a hug. That's how it's going to turn
- 42:59Speaker 3: out timing-wise.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Well, the cell phone reception is better in the Seattle
- 43:03Speaker 2: metro area, so that's good.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Yeah, we don't have cell phones in Canada. We still
- 43:07Speaker 3: use tin cans and strings.
- 43:10Speaker 2: All these quarterback injuries around the league, Farhan. Caleb Williams
- 43:14Speaker 2: in Chicago. Here's another Jackson Dart Monday night, and now
- 43:18Speaker 2: it looks like he's out for the season. And yet
- 43:20Speaker 2: Seattle rolls on with Drew Locke. Do the Seahawks have
- 43:24Speaker 2: the best backup quarterback situation in the league? And how
- 43:28Speaker 2: rare is it? for Locke doing what he's doing and
- 43:31Speaker 2: a team not missing the beat like this?
- 43:34Speaker 4: Well, I think it's fair to put Locke in that discussion.
- 43:37Speaker 4: You know, we haven't seen it yet, but I think
- 43:38Speaker 4: San Francisco is.
- 43:39Speaker 3: A pretty good one with Mac Jones.
- 43:41Speaker 4: But the reason the CX have such a great situation
- 43:45Speaker 4: is because their defense is the best in the league, right?
- 43:47Speaker 4: When you have the best defense in the league, you
- 43:49Speaker 4: don't have to put that kind of pressure on a
- 43:51Speaker 4: back at quarterback and look full marks to drew lock, right?
- 43:55Speaker 4: Showed up in the fourth quarter when they needed him
- 43:56Speaker 4: in the first game. You look at this second game
- 43:58Speaker 4: and just, you know, three touchdown passes.
- 44:01Speaker 3: He looks calm. He understands the offense. He's efficient. The
- 44:04Speaker 3: game doesn't look.
- 44:04Speaker 4: Too big for him. And again, he knows when he's
- 44:07Speaker 4: playing the game, right? I don't need to do too much, right?
- 44:11Speaker 4: You're playing from ahead. It's a comfortable place to live. And,
- 44:14Speaker 4: you know, even though the, you know, the running game
- 44:16Speaker 4: hasn't completely blown up yet, the team is still committed
- 44:18Speaker 4: to it. And then you put him in favorable situations
- 44:21Speaker 4: all the time. So I think he's in a great
- 44:23Speaker 4: situation because of what's around him, but the team's also
- 44:26Speaker 4: in a very good situation to have him.
- 44:29Speaker 2: I'm going to go right to the rest of the
- 44:31Speaker 2: NFC West to you. The Rams, the game the other
- 44:33Speaker 2: night that caught my eye when I was flying back
- 44:35Speaker 2: from Phoenix was that Aaron Donald played 58% of the snaps,
- 44:40Speaker 2: way more than I would have figured he would have been.
- 44:43Speaker 2: You were down at Rams training camp when the Donald
- 44:45Speaker 2: thing was he was coming back and working his way back.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Do you see this as sustainable? Do you see him
- 44:51Speaker 2: as being a three-down guy by the time the Seahawks
- 44:54Speaker 2: and Rams play on Christmas Day?
- 44:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it'll be an entirely different team. Both
- 45:00Speaker 4: teams could be entirely different by then. So I think
- 45:02Speaker 4: the plan is that at that point, yeah, he's going
- 45:05Speaker 4: to be that guy.
- 45:06Speaker 3: 32 snaps in that game, I.
- 45:08Speaker 4: Think is reasonable for him. And I think he was
- 45:09Speaker 4: relatively productive, right? Had the tackle for loss, had a
- 45:12Speaker 4: couple of assists, one quarterback pressure, and he only got
- 45:15Speaker 4: double teamed seven times, right?
- 45:17Speaker 5: So.
- 45:18Speaker 4: when he gets double teamed a little bit more, does
- 45:20Speaker 4: that take a little bit of a bit of a toll?
- 45:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 45:22Speaker 4: Eventually you're going to get miles Garrett back. Does that,
- 45:25Speaker 4: you know, get him even, you know, easier matchups, right?
- 45:28Speaker 4: Like those are all things that are going to factor in.
- 45:30Speaker 4: But I think that, you know, it was always part
- 45:33Speaker 4: of the plan to ramp them up. And while it's
- 45:35Speaker 4: week one for him, it's week two for the team.
- 45:37Speaker 4: And there was just a greater need, right? Because when
- 45:39Speaker 4: you don't have miles Garrett, you need to find ways
- 45:41Speaker 4: to rush the Sasha from inside out versus outside in.
- 45:44Speaker 5: Right.
- 45:44Speaker 4: So that stuff that they're going to, uh, you know,
- 45:47Speaker 4: work their way through.
- 45:48Speaker 3: But I think he's going to be like, I thought
- 45:51Speaker 3: he looked good.
- 45:51Speaker 4: I didn't think he looked like he was, um, out
- 45:55Speaker 4: of his depth. He didn't look out of shape. You know,
- 45:57Speaker 4: he only had two padded practices and it's not going
- 46:00Speaker 4: to get much better for him because it's just that
- 46:02Speaker 4: time of year. And we just don't do a lot
- 46:04Speaker 4: of padded practices anymore. So, you know, I think there's
- 46:06Speaker 4: just going to be a constant exercise in management and
- 46:09Speaker 4: getting them ready. But I think 32 will be the
- 46:11Speaker 4: bottom end and he is going to trend towards 60
- 46:13Speaker 4: plus snaps by the time they get to Christmas.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Rams at Broncos is the Sunday night game this week.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Also in the NFC West, the 49ers are two and
- 46:22Speaker 2: oh Brock, Purdy, 20 of 22 passing to beat the
- 46:25Speaker 2: terrible Dolphins in the home opener for San Francisco this
- 46:28Speaker 2: past weekend. You said in the preseason you weren't sure
- 46:31Speaker 2: this was a three-team race anymore because of all the
- 46:33Speaker 2: health issues for San Francisco. Is it surprising to start
- 46:37Speaker 2: off to the way they handled the Rams in Australia?
- 46:40Speaker 2: And Brock Purdy, we talk a lot about him in Seattle,
- 46:43Speaker 2: and a lot of people up here don't give him
- 46:44Speaker 2: a lot of credit for being a good quarterback. What's
- 46:46Speaker 2: your view of Brock Purdy after his performance on Sunday
- 46:49Speaker 2: and the 49ers in general?
- 46:52Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Look, I think he's a very good quarterback and I
- 46:54Speaker 4: think he's the right quarterback.
- 46:56Speaker 3: In a college Shanahan system.
- 46:58Speaker 4: I'm really impressed with what he's done.
- 46:59Speaker 3: And I think it's easy to say that.
- 47:01Speaker 4: The schedule for them has been bad because the Rams were,
- 47:03Speaker 4: you know, as, as Sean McVay said, led by a
- 47:06Speaker 4: dumb ass coach, you put them in a bad situation.
- 47:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 47:08Speaker 3: And I think that's real.
- 47:10Speaker 4: So I think that you have to kind of grade
- 47:12Speaker 4: that game on a bit of a curve. The dolphins
- 47:14Speaker 4: are going to be in contention for the number one
- 47:15Speaker 4: pick overall in the draft next year. So that's kind
- 47:18Speaker 4: of a charity game. But at the same time, you
- 47:21Speaker 4: also have to factor in the injuries that Brock Purdy
- 47:23Speaker 4: has had at receiver, right? I mean, you know, to
- 47:25Speaker 4: lose Ricky Pearsall in training camp, Deshaun Stripling, who was
- 47:28Speaker 4: a guy they were really expecting some things from.
- 47:31Speaker 3: This year, and, you know, Robinson as well.
- 47:33Speaker 4: So, you know, George Kittle came back for that first
- 47:36Speaker 4: game and kind of eased his way back in a
- 47:37Speaker 4: little bit.
- 47:37Speaker 3: So, you know, when you look at what.
- 47:39Speaker 4: He's had to work with, I think you've got to
- 47:41Speaker 4: give him credit, despite the fact that he hasn't necessarily
- 47:44Speaker 4: played the best of defenses. Yeah. I like Brock Purdy.
- 47:49Speaker 3: And he's got a lot to live up to because
- 47:51Speaker 3: of the contract.
- 47:52Speaker 4: It just puts so much more pressure on him and
- 47:57Speaker 4: also prevented them from being able to add a lot
- 48:02Speaker 4: to his weaponry. Right now, he's playing as well as
- 48:07Speaker 4: any quarterback in the league. There's just no way around that.
- 48:09Speaker 4: He is playing incredibly well. Who do you look at?
- 48:13Speaker 4: Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and who else is playing better?
- 48:16Speaker 3: Than Brock Purdy right now.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Do you think... When I look at Christian McCaffrey's stats,
- 48:21Speaker 2: his Farhan Laws, UTSN Canada, joining us at Beacon Plumbing Hotline,
- 48:25Speaker 2: his weekly appearance with us around the NFL. When I
- 48:27Speaker 2: look at Christian McCaffrey's stats, 20 carries for 91 yards total,
- 48:32Speaker 2: though he did have two touchdowns against the Dolphins. He
- 48:34Speaker 2: only had 23 yards. Do you think they're pacing him?
- 48:37Speaker 2: He had a contract issue at the beginning of the
- 48:40Speaker 2: training camp, and he kind of made some noise about that.
- 48:43Speaker 2: What do you think the long... I know he's getting
- 48:46Speaker 2: up there in age and he's had some injury issues,
- 48:48Speaker 2: but the offense is so predicated on the run in
- 48:51Speaker 2: San Francisco. Christian McCaffrey is going to get more than
- 48:54Speaker 2: 10 carries and 23 yards in games going forward, no?
- 48:58Speaker 3: For sure.
- 48:59Speaker 4: And I think they absolutely are pacing him. This is
- 49:01Speaker 4: a player that you can't expect to stay healthy because
- 49:04Speaker 4: even though he managed to get through all the games
- 49:05Speaker 4: last year, you know, going into the year, there were
- 49:08Speaker 4: questions about him a year ago. The previous year, there
- 49:09Speaker 4: were issues around him. He's always that guy that's going
- 49:12Speaker 4: to get those muscular type injuries. And, you know, as
- 49:15Speaker 4: we talk about quarterbacks, somebody was asking me that, you.
- 49:17Speaker 3: Know, is this because of the preseason? Nobody plays starters
- 49:19Speaker 3: in the preseason. I don't know that it's an.
- 49:21Speaker 4: Issue for quarterbacks because of the randomness of the type
- 49:25Speaker 4: of injury, but in Christian McCaffrey's case, it's always a
- 49:28Speaker 4: muscular injury with him.
- 49:29Speaker 3: Right?
- 49:29Speaker 4: Like he's so muscle bound that way that that's what
- 49:32Speaker 4: you've always got to worry about. So I think they
- 49:34Speaker 4: have to treat the first couple of regular season games
- 49:37Speaker 4: as preseason games for McCaffrey and ramp them up. He's
- 49:40Speaker 4: eventually going to play more, but that first game when,
- 49:42Speaker 4: what is it? Kalon Thomas said the line or Kalon, yeah,
- 49:45Speaker 4: from the Indiana rookie had the bulk of the carries for, for,
- 49:50Speaker 4: for the 49ers.
- 49:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:51Speaker 4: It raised my eyebrows, but it showed that they are
- 49:53Speaker 4: being smart with him. And I, More than any other
- 49:56Speaker 4: player in the NFL right now, I think he is
- 49:59Speaker 4: treating the early season, Paul Shannon is treating the early
- 50:01Speaker 4: season games for Christian McCaffrey as the preseason.
- 50:05Speaker 3: So his workload is going to increase. It's going to
- 50:07Speaker 3: have to.
- 50:08Speaker 2: And they've gotten two wins while doing that, like you said.
- 50:10Speaker 2: And now the next three for San Francisco versus Arizona
- 50:14Speaker 2: versus Denver and at Seattle against the Seahawks in week five.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Clint Kubiak and the Raiders are 2-0. There's some people
- 50:21Speaker 2: here that thought, well, Clint Kubiak's not a head coach.
- 50:23Speaker 2: They saw his affect in press conferences and how stayed
- 50:26Speaker 2: and maybe just boring and plain he was, and how
- 50:29Speaker 2: can he lead men? Here the Raiders are 2-0. They
- 50:31Speaker 2: beat the Chargers, which most people at the beginning of
- 50:34Speaker 2: the season didn't think they would do. 2-0 in a division,
- 50:37Speaker 2: of course, that still has Patrick Mahomes, has Bo Nix
- 50:39Speaker 2: in Denver. You're buying into the Raiders, and what do
- 50:43Speaker 2: you see is how they're 2-0 and beating, what did
- 50:45Speaker 2: they beat the Cardinals the first week? I can't even
- 50:48Speaker 2: remember if they beat the first week, and then they
- 50:49Speaker 2: handled the Chargers pretty easily.
- 50:52Speaker 4: Yeah, look, I'm not buying into them as a contender
- 50:55Speaker 4: and a team that's going to finish above 500 and,
- 50:58Speaker 4: you know, be knocking on the playoff door. I don't
- 51:01Speaker 4: see that, but I am impressed with what's happening. And
- 51:03Speaker 4: I think that this is a step for them, right?
- 51:05Speaker 4: Like a step for a team like this is to,
- 51:08Speaker 4: you know, go six and 11 and just be competitive
- 51:11Speaker 4: in every game. And I think that's That's a place
- 51:13Speaker 4: where they can get to. And Kirk cousins is, is
- 51:16Speaker 4: allowed them to be a little bit more stable with
- 51:18Speaker 4: what's happening offensively.
- 51:19Speaker 3: And again, you know, we, we talk about the chargers.
- 51:21Speaker 4: Like I've, I've told you since day one, I think
- 51:23Speaker 4: the charges are fraudulent despite having the best quarterback in
- 51:27Speaker 4: the history of football, right? Like remember just to this
- 51:30Speaker 4: quarterback in the history of football, according to his head coach. But,
- 51:33Speaker 4: you know, and he's got no receivers to throw to
- 51:36Speaker 4: outside of Ladd-McCaulkey. But then I look at the Raiders
- 51:38Speaker 4: roster and you look at where they're at a receiver and,
- 51:40Speaker 4: you know, you've got Tucker with five catches for 119
- 51:42Speaker 4: yards and a touchdown in that last game. And they
- 51:45Speaker 4: don't even have Brock Bowers yet. and Ashton Genting hasn't
- 51:48Speaker 4: really launched yet, right? 21 carries for just 48 yards
- 51:51Speaker 4: in the last game. So in the first two games,
- 51:53Speaker 4: I thought he would really take a step this year,
- 51:55Speaker 4: but they've still got some offensive line questions. So I
- 51:58Speaker 4: like the way Flint Kubiak has handled their offense and
- 52:01Speaker 4: is not exposing them to areas where they're not going
- 52:04Speaker 4: to be vulnerable, right? So he's putting Cousins in favorable situations.
- 52:08Speaker 4: And even though Genting isn't It hasn't been overly dynamic yet.
- 52:13Speaker 4: They're still fully committed to it. And that's part of
- 52:16Speaker 4: the Mike McDonald playbook, right? He doesn't care if you're
- 52:19Speaker 4: not great running the ball at this moment. I mean,
- 52:22Speaker 4: he does care, but he's not going to allow that
- 52:24Speaker 4: to prevent him from selling his offensive coordinator. You're going
- 52:27Speaker 4: to damn well run the ball, right? Because we saw
- 52:28Speaker 4: what happened with Ryan Grubb when he refused to run
- 52:30Speaker 4: the ball. So I think that Clint Kubiak has taken
- 52:33Speaker 4: some of that and said, look, no matter what, We're
- 52:35Speaker 4: going to be committed to this and we're going to
- 52:38Speaker 4: put our quarterback in advantageous.
- 52:40Speaker 3: Situations, right?
- 52:41Speaker 4: Uh, 19 of 29, you don't want her cousins throwing
- 52:44Speaker 4: in the high thirties on a game by game basis
- 52:47Speaker 4: because they're playing catch up from the early going. Right.
- 52:49Speaker 4: So I, you know, I think it's been good. They
- 52:51Speaker 4: protected the ball. Their defense has.
- 52:52Speaker 3: Taken a step.
- 52:53Speaker 4: Matt Crosby's Max Crosby's found his game. Despite all of
- 52:57Speaker 4: that drama in the off season, what is he getting
- 52:58Speaker 4: traded to Baltimore or not?
- 53:00Speaker 3: Uh, you know, he's been able to be really, really impactful.
- 53:02Speaker 4: So, uh, You know, I think they're in a good place,
- 53:05Speaker 4: and I think for them, six to seven wins, be
- 53:08Speaker 4: competitive even in the losses, and then you can reset
- 53:10Speaker 4: your culture, which Pete Carroll was never able to do.
- 53:13Speaker 2: You did say about the Chargers that you didn't think
- 53:15Speaker 2: they were this, but did you think they were this bad?
- 53:18Speaker 2: I mean, in L.A., they're talking like this is just
- 53:21Speaker 2: doomsday and trade everybody and fire everybody, and what's hard
- 53:24Speaker 2: about doing? Is it the offensive line? Is it the
- 53:28Speaker 2: fact they don't have a go-to receiver, which you've told
- 53:30Speaker 2: us about? The defense they've tried to remake. What do
- 53:33Speaker 2: you think the main issues are with the Chargers who
- 53:36Speaker 2: come in into Seattle next week to play the Seahawks?
- 53:39Speaker 4: Yeah, first of all, I think that, yeah, they don't
- 53:43Speaker 4: have a difference maker at receiver, right? Like, you know,
- 53:45Speaker 4: we talked about Ladd McConk. He was a solid receiver,
- 53:47Speaker 4: but shouldn't be a number one in my estimation. They've
- 53:50Speaker 4: got no targets around him. You know, it's been interesting watching...
- 53:56Speaker 4: Mike McDaniel, who I thought was going to be able
- 53:58Speaker 4: to unlock them and at least kind of use the
- 54:00Speaker 4: motions and use the shifts and kind of get them
- 54:02Speaker 4: into advantageous situations as far as matchups are concerned or
- 54:06Speaker 4: leverage is concerned. That hasn't really happened yet. They've tried,
- 54:10Speaker 4: but I just feel like it's very much a work
- 54:13Speaker 4: in progress for them. They don't have anything they can
- 54:15Speaker 4: kind of hang their hat on, right? I mean, even
- 54:17Speaker 4: in the last game, Omari and Hampton wasn't bad, 4.1
- 54:20Speaker 4: yards a carry in that game, but it's... Justin Herbert
- 54:24Speaker 4: is turning the ball over. He's taking sacks. The offensive
- 54:27Speaker 4: line's got some issues. They got healthy at offensive tackle,
- 54:31Speaker 4: but then all of a sudden they got banged up
- 54:33Speaker 4: in the interior. It hasn't worked the way they wanted. Defensively,
- 54:37Speaker 4: their defense isn't good.
- 54:40Speaker 3: Enough to keep them in games.
- 54:41Speaker 4: It's a roster that's built around relying on Justin Herbert
- 54:44Speaker 4: and a coach who deep down wants to run the
- 54:47Speaker 4: football and an offensive coordinator who's comfortable running the football
- 54:50Speaker 4: but needs weapons to allow for some creases to be
- 54:53Speaker 4: taken in the running game, and it just hasn't happened yet.
- 54:56Speaker 4: So I wouldn't fire everybody and throw the baby out
- 54:58Speaker 4: with the bathwater. I still think McDaniel's a good coach,
- 55:01Speaker 4: but their front office needs to find a way to
- 55:03Speaker 4: add some speed in the receiving corps because they flat
- 55:05Speaker 4: out don't have it.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Fire and Lology, TSN Canada, joining us on the Beacon
- 55:09Speaker 2: Plumbing Online. He's on his way here to Seahawk headquarters
- 55:11Speaker 2: for the Seahawks practice day to see if Sam Donald is,
- 55:14Speaker 2: in fact, going to practice for the second consecutive day
- 55:16Speaker 2: and then start Sunday at the Commander's. All right, tonight's
- 55:19Speaker 2: game is Atlanta at Green Bay. Michael Penix, Jr., it
- 55:23Speaker 2: looks like he's going to start a quarterback, whether he's
- 55:25Speaker 2: ready to or not, because everybody else is hurt in Atlanta.
- 55:29Speaker 2: The Falcons, they've tried to remake themselves a couple times
- 55:33Speaker 2: here in the last couple years, including on defense, including
- 55:35Speaker 2: a quarterback, including a coach, including a general manager. Where
- 55:39Speaker 2: do you view them? And then there's the Packers, who
- 55:42Speaker 2: remain an NFC contender. When you think about down-the-road playoff contenders,
- 55:45Speaker 2: I think the Packers are right up there with someone
- 55:48Speaker 2: the Seahawks could meet in January. Just give us a
- 55:51Speaker 2: little forecast of what you're thinking about this game tonight
- 55:54Speaker 2: that's going to be on KGR at 515.
- 55:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm kind of like you in terms of my
- 55:59Speaker 4: bullishness on the Packers, but I just haven't liked the
- 56:02Speaker 4: way they played this season.
- 56:03Speaker 3: And despite the results, I.
- 56:04Speaker 4: Think the process has been a bit of holding your breath, right?
- 56:07Speaker 4: Like it just hasn't looked as clean as you thought
- 56:10Speaker 4: it might. You know, Jordan Love looks like he's still
- 56:12Speaker 4: got He's still trying to find his game this year.
- 56:15Speaker 4: You know, in my mind, you know, they've had to
- 56:17Speaker 4: play from behind a little bit, but as far as
- 56:19Speaker 4: the Falcons and Panics are concerned, I think these are
- 56:21Speaker 4: really important times for him. And I'm a, you know me,
- 56:24Speaker 4: I'm a big Huskies fan and I'm a big Michael
- 56:25Speaker 4: Panics fan. And I think that, you know, his first year,
- 56:29Speaker 4: he showed so much promise and wasn't able to follow
- 56:32Speaker 4: it up. And now you're kind of dealing with a
- 56:33Speaker 4: different group of people around you. And you're trying to
- 56:35Speaker 4: make an impression on them that, you know, even though
- 56:37Speaker 4: they might not have been the ones that drafted you,
- 56:39Speaker 4: they should believe in you. Um, you know, and, and
- 56:42Speaker 4: they haven't really unlocked Bijan Robinson yet.
- 56:43Speaker 3: Right.
- 56:44Speaker 4: So two is also going to be healthy enough to
- 56:46Speaker 4: play as the backup in this game. But I, to me,
- 56:48Speaker 4: I think they should invest in Penix a little more
- 56:51Speaker 4: and see what they've got, but they need to take
- 56:53Speaker 4: a page out of Clint Kubiak's playbook and just lean
- 56:56Speaker 4: on Bijan Robinson as much as you can and not
- 56:58Speaker 4: put the entire game in in Michael Penix's lap, right? So,
- 57:01Speaker 4: you know, I want to see what happens, but from
- 57:03Speaker 4: Penix's perspective, when you do throw the football, like you
- 57:06Speaker 4: just can't put the ball in harm's way.
- 57:08Speaker 3: And even though he's, you.
- 57:10Speaker 4: Know, wired to be a big play down the field passer,
- 57:12Speaker 4: he needs to be a bit of a game manager
- 57:14Speaker 4: right now. And just because if you play from behind
- 57:17Speaker 4: and it all falls in your lap, bad things are
- 57:19Speaker 4: going to happen for them. So I think from a,
- 57:21Speaker 4: from an offensive coordinator standpoint, like just go with, with
- 57:25Speaker 4: Bijan as much as humanly possible tonight. And, you know,
- 57:29Speaker 4: the Packers are still trying to find themselves defensively as well,
- 57:32Speaker 4: you know, without Parsons kind of, you know, playing where, where,
- 57:34Speaker 4: you know, they're expecting him yet.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 57:36Speaker 3: So, It should be an interesting game, right?
- 57:39Speaker 4: Like, you know, Lambeau's just the best place to watch
- 57:42Speaker 4: a football game. I know we love Lumen Field, but, like,
- 57:44Speaker 4: Lambeau is awesome. So I'm looking forward to watching it
- 57:47Speaker 4: and seeing what we get out of both teams. There's
- 57:49Speaker 4: just a lot of question marks in Atlanta, and I
- 57:51Speaker 4: think the Packers just have another level to get to.
- 57:53Speaker 3: They haven't shown it yet.
- 57:54Speaker 4: And now, all of a sudden, what we thought was
- 57:56Speaker 4: going to be just a really, really difficult division, wow,
- 57:59Speaker 4: it could fall back to them.
- 58:00Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Because the Bears aren't going
- 58:02Speaker 3: to be a factor yet.
- 58:03Speaker 4: The Lions haven't done anything yet. Like, all of a sudden,
- 58:07Speaker 4: This could be the Packers' division to lose.
- 58:10Speaker 2: Packers are 1-1 after losing, getting pulled away at the end.
- 58:15Speaker 2: The Vikings beat them 39-22. And then last week, they
- 58:17Speaker 2: had to go to overtime to beat the Jets on
- 58:20Speaker 2: the road. This is their home opener night in Lambeau.
- 58:22Speaker 2: The Falcons are 0-2. They lost 20-13 at the Steelers
- 58:25Speaker 2: when T.J. Watt intercepted a pass late in the game
- 58:28Speaker 2: and ran it back. And then, man, they got crushed
- 58:30Speaker 2: in their home opener by the Panthers, 34-3. And the
- 58:33Speaker 2: Falcons get the Packers tonight at 5-15 here on KJR.
- 58:37Speaker 2: Anything else around the league that sticks out to you
- 58:39Speaker 2: or you want to mention about either a surprise, a disappointment, Seahawks-related,
- 58:44Speaker 2: not Seahawks-related, just what sticks out to you through two
- 58:47Speaker 2: weeks of the season?
- 58:48Speaker 4: Well, I want to ask you, and I think you
- 58:51Speaker 4: asked the question to Mike McDonald yesterday, but should the
- 58:55Speaker 4: Seahawks take an even more cautious approach with Sam Darnold?
- 58:57Speaker 2: I was going to ask you about that. I would.
- 59:00Speaker 4: I feel like he's going to start this game. Just
- 59:03Speaker 4: because he took at least half the reps yesterday from
- 59:06Speaker 4: what we're led to believe. You have to believe he's
- 59:08Speaker 4: going to take more as long as he kind of
- 59:10Speaker 4: came out of yesterday in good shape. So, but you've
- 59:14Speaker 4: got a Washington team that's already on their backup quarterback.
- 59:17Speaker 4: And I mean, Marcus Mariota did reasonably well in the
- 59:20Speaker 4: second half of the last game against the Cowboys, but
- 59:22Speaker 4: you know, they're just, they were behind in that game.
- 59:27Speaker 4: can you take Washington for granted enough where it's no
- 59:30Speaker 4: problem to put, uh, to go with drew lock for
- 59:34Speaker 4: one more game?
- 59:35Speaker 2: I think so. The way this defense is playing, I
- 59:37Speaker 2: don't know if there's anybody beside the Rams and 49ers
- 59:39Speaker 2: on the schedule that you wouldn't think that about. No.
- 59:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 59:43Speaker 4: I mean, I tend to agree. And I think that
- 59:44Speaker 4: defense is only going to get better now that you've
- 59:46Speaker 4: got Nick and Manori back and eventually, um, you know, when,
- 59:50Speaker 4: when Ty O'Connor gets back from his hamstring injury in
- 59:52Speaker 4: a few weeks here, um, They're only going to get better.
- 59:56Speaker 4: So if it's me, I would probably take a real
- 59:57Speaker 4: cautious approach with it. But it doesn't sound like McDonald's
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: going to. And the fact that you've got a backup
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: quarterback you can trust allows you to take a little
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: bit of risk with your starter. But I would probably
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: wait one more game, but it doesn't sound like they're
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: going to.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: I agree with you there, and I agree with you
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: that it doesn't sound like they're going to either. Farhan,
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: we're going to see you in like three minutes here
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: at Seahawk Headquarters. Thanks for being on again, man.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: What's for lunch today, buddy?
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: No lunch on Thursday, man. You're going to be bereft
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: of food. You've got to bring your own. Stop on
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: your way in.
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: There's a Subway and Starbucks across the street, my friend.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: There's a McDonald's. We've got some snack granola bars in here.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: That's it, man. All right, man.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: We'll talk to you soon.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: See you in a minute. Yes, sir. Farhan Lalji from
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: TSN Canada, NFL reporter. who goes across the country, across
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: North America, really, broadcasting NFL games and CFL games for

- 1:00:52Speaker 2: at around 11 o'clock travel schedule for him, depending. He's

- 1:01:09Speaker 2: that the Rams and Broncos is still on the Factor
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Fiction KJR table. Jessamyn McIntyre, who has our pick next.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: I'm aware. At 1135, Factor Fiction, your chance to win
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Next, we'll
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: have that and your text and talkbacks from SEAC headquarters
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:01:46Speaker 11: Greg, I appreciate your comments about Ben Singer, but what
- 1:01:50Speaker 11: you and he do are totally different. You're a journalist.
- 1:01:53Speaker 11: You have the things you stand by. He's just a
- 1:01:55Speaker 11: reality television show producer. He doesn't function what you do.
- 1:01:59Speaker 11: He's just a product of the internet and the media.
- 1:02:03Speaker 11: Totally different thing for you.
- 1:02:05Speaker 12: Well, comment and understanding of on the record or off
- 1:02:08Speaker 12: the record, what you're saying is that that the journalist
- 1:02:11Speaker 12: is the one who decides whether it's going to be
- 1:02:15Speaker 12: on the record or off the record after it's said.
- 1:02:18Speaker 12: That kind of bothers me because it puts the power
- 1:02:21Speaker 12: then in the journalist. If they want to continue to
- 1:02:24Speaker 12: be friends, they do the filtering.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: Us talk fans are unbelievably lucky to have this guy
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: as our coach.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: That's what I'll say. He's an amazing man. He's an
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: amazing coach.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: Get the most out of his guys, out of our organization. Yeah,
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: I mean, I just can't say it enough.
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: We're just incredibly lucky to have him.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: I hope he stays around until he dies.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: I mean, he.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: Is just unbelievably awesome.
- 1:02:51Speaker 8: And, yeah, go Hawks, go Mike.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: We got the one, man.
- 1:02:57Speaker 12: Standing that the press, and again, entertainment press, versus true
- 1:03:03Speaker 12: journalism are going to make a decision whether it should
- 1:03:06Speaker 12: be reported to the public. The term unbecoming, if you
- 1:03:13Speaker 12: saw something like that, would it get reported as a
- 1:03:18Speaker 12: journalist or as an entertainer?
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: Hey, it's me, Rodney.
- 1:03:22Speaker 8: Rodney Dangerfield here again.
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: I tell you what, this would have been a good
- 1:03:26Speaker 6: story for that movie of mine, Meet Wally Sparks, because
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: this is nothing. If I would have heard this story
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: at a restaurant, I'd send it back, because it's a
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: big nothing burger. I mean, tell you what, I did
- 1:03:35Speaker 6: read this story, though, in the newspaper. I was surprised
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: to see it in the obituaries. And then I realized
- 1:03:40Speaker 6: the story's dead. No, no, tell you what, no respect.
- 1:03:44Speaker 6: I get no respect in that Mike guy. He gets
- 1:03:46Speaker 6: no respect, I tell you what.
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: I do appreciate those, yes. Obviously, we found the lightning
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: rod of the topic of the day.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: That one guy sounds like James Earl Jones or something.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: He's got some baritone.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: The baritone, yeah. 49451 is the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Greg,
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: do you hate the Mariners? I hate them this season,
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: but it seems you get joy from their continued failures.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: And I wrote them back and saying, well, No, I
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: want the Mariners to go to the World Series, and
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: I know a lot of people in the organization, and
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: I really hope the best for them. I hate what
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: this season became. I hate their leadership has ruined the
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: talent that they have. I hate the underperforming. I hate
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: the frustration of never being able to play the World
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: Series in 50 years. That I do hate. I really
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: think it starts at the top. I've talked about this
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: a thousand times, but.
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: It always does.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: He wrote back to three six. Oh, dude, I'm here
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: with you. I'm there with you. Destination park for BC, Idaho, Oregon,
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: with no major league baseball, 42 years as a fan
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: lost my dad, who was a diehard a couple of
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: years back. And he never got to see him on
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: a run outside of 1995. Sharing the playoffs with my
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: son last year was unforgettable. That's why this season hurts
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: so damn bad. Take care. Listening from Bellingham. Well, thank you, Bellingham. And, Absolutely.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: That's what makes this frustration and pain even more because
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: of what happened last year and the fact that they
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: got eight outs from the World Series and now they're
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: 10 games under. 500 in a division that is just
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: the worst and maybe ever in Major League Baseball. Like
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: I said, they could have won this division going backwards,
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: and they didn't. That boss P206 is a boss PR
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: move for the Seahawks at noon would be to make
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: both Drew and Sam available to the media and the
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: press conference. That's what I would do.
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: That's what we were saying earlier.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Yes. That's what I would do.
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: It just makes perfect sense to gamesmanship away.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: Someone earlier had texted in and asked, you know, like,
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: why would Drew be limited if he was completely healthy?
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: And there's some clarification you can provide.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Yeah. So, one, he doesn't have an injury, so he
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: does not have to be listed in his participation. But two...
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: This is actually more than his normal reps. He's getting
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: more first-team reps than he ever does when he's the
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: backup quarterback. So it's not actually fewer reps for him
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: but more. But the main reason is because Drew Locke
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: doesn't have an injury, so he doesn't have to be
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: listed as a participant in any form on the practice report. Hey,
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: you want to win $ 1, 000? Hey! Lucky Eagle Casino and
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Hotel wants to give it to you. Here's how. We're
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: set to go. Glad you're with us.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: grand prize. It's Fact or Fiction. Proudly presented by Lucky
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every day feels lucky.
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: Fact or Fiction is on.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR-FM. All right, if you don't know,
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: here's how it works. Every day, 7.35 a.m., 11.35 a.m.,
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: 2.35 p.m. with Ian Furness, 3.35 p.m. with Dave Softy
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: Muller and Dick Fane. Those are the times every day
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: that we pick a college or pro game, either against
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: the spread or total number of points over or under.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: We'll give you our pick, and then you decide whether
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: you agree or disagree. If you agree, you text FACT
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: to 49451. If you disagree, you text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: Whatever the result is, if you were right, you get
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: entered into a drawing on Monday to win $ 1, 000 for
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: this week. You only have to be right once. But
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: it behooves you to play as many times as you can,
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: up to 20 times a week, because even if you
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: don't win weekly, whoever wins the most times between now
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: and December 11th, Army-Navy Friday in New York City, where
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre and I will be broadcasting from in Times Square.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Whoever wins the most between now and then wins $ 10, 000
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Okay, it's Jessamyn's turn. Thursday,
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: and she is NFL, if you can't tell by the music.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: You're a floor man.
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: It was an indicator, yes. I am going to take
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: the Giants minus two and a half as they host
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: the Titans this weekend. And I went back and forth
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: between who I was going to pick in this match
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: so many times. But I'm going to take a veteran
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: in Jameis Winston. Even though Jackson Dart is out, yes,
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: Cam Ward has not come to fruition quite yet. And
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: the Titans are just terrible on both sides of the ball.
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: And they're hosting in New York. And having been a
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: veteran of New York football crowds, I'm going to say
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: that it's not going to be a friendly environment for them.
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: So I'm taking the Giants minus two and a half
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: as they host the Titans this weekend.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: That's an interesting pick because the Titans took— they were leading.
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: I went back and forth, Greg.
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: The Eagles in the final minute.
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: I went back and forth. But they're only getting two
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: and a half, which is basically just a squash. That's
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: a wash.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: And so I'm going with my gut here. I'm taking
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: the Giants.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: Wow. Okay.
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: You can fiction your little who has a way on me,
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: but I am very firm in this pick. even though
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: I wasn't throughout the last half hour.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: You have 12 minutes to text in fact or fiction
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: to 49451 if you agree or disagree with Jessamyn. Giants
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: minus two and a half over the Titans in the
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: Meadowlands on Sunday. My daughter was telling me, our daughter
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: was telling us this morning that There's a couple big
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: storms coming through the East Coast. She's in Norfolk, Virginia
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: for training with the Coast Guard right now. But it's
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: supposed to rain in the Meadowlands on Sunday. And not heavy,
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: heavy rain, but rain. So take that as you were.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: But she's taking the Giants with Jameis Winston, the backup quarterback,
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: to beat Cam Ward or at least cover the spread
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: of 2.5 points against Cam Ward and the Titans on Sunday.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: Jameis might 2.5. Over the Titans, if you agree, text
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: You have about 10-ish more minutes to do that. That
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: was an interesting pick.
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: I kind of went deep on that one. You know,
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: usually I like to stay within the division, and a
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: lot of things were already picked as it relates to
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: the Seahawks. But, you know, I went with one that
- 1:10:04Speaker 5: maybe no one else would.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: I thought you were going to go Rams-Broncos this way.
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: I was looking at that, but... Yeah, that one, I
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: don't know. I just like this pic. I like this
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: pic a lot.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: 206 says, indeed, it was dramatic, the voicemail, the voice
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: message about... Wanting Mike McDonald to be here until he dies. Yeah,
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: that was a little... He's only 39 years old. I know.
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: I'm like, okay, okay, okay. Let's just not talk about
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: death for someone under 40.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: I hope he stays the rest of his life until
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: 206 says, I'm dramatic about Mike. I hear you.
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: Yeah. And I think the beginning of that text or
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: voice message was that we are so lucky to have him.
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: Point made, point accepted, and point gotten. We got that
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: for sure. Don't text false. Don't text true. Fact or fiction, please.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: We're seeing the text line with false and true. You're
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: not going to get noted.
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: It's either fact or fiction.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: Correct. So redo that if you did.
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: And don't send in the pic either. Yeah.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: We already know what the pic was. Yes. 253 says,
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: I think the Seahawks should still start block. It's a
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: long season. Injuries can happen at any time. If you
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: can get through a game or two more without having
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: to put Darnold out there, you're in good shape. I agree.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: That's what I would do, especially with the way the
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: defense is playing. That's not how they're thinking or saying publicly.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: We'll see how Sam Darnold reacts today to practicing yesterday
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: for the first time since the injury two weeks ago.
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: In reference to the Mariners, I love this from the 206,
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: because so many people don't understand the reference, but I do.
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: Was it over when Germany bombed Pearl Harbor?
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: What's that reference from, text line? Come on. Those of
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: you who know what that's from.
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: Yes, but every time I say that quote on the air,
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, you know it wasn't. I get just
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: very admonished for my lack of history knowledge, but it
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: is a very good quote.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: You and John Belushi get the same acknowledgement.
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: It was a really inspiring speech, too.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: It was. That was his best. That's all he had
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: to offer. Just let him go.
- 1:12:19Speaker 5: 3-6-0.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: I think Darnold should play to shake off some rust
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: against a team that might leave some room for error.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: I'd rather his game back be against the Commanders instead
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: of a playoff caliber team. Well, that's an interesting point, too. Anyway, 4-9-4-5-1. Thanks,
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: as always, for texting in. Thanks for playing on Factor Fiction.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: You've still got about eight minutes, seven minutes or so.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: Jessamyn's pick is Giants minus two and a half at
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: home over the Titans on Sunday. If you think the
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: Giants are going to win by three or more points,
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: text Factor 4-9-4-5-1. If you think Giants are going to
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: win by fewer than three points or the Titans win outright,
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: text Fiction to 4-9-4-5-1. You'll have another chance at 2-35,
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: but you've got about seven more minutes to text in
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: Factor Fiction to Giants. Minus 2.5 at home against the Titans.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Up next, Ian Furness. I thought he was going to
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: be with me at Seahawks headquarters. I don't know where
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: he is.
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: I'm looking at him right now. Live in the flesh.
- 1:13:14Speaker 5: I'm not alone anymore.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: Hey, so Ian will tell us what he's got going
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: on next on 93.3 KJR FM. Welcome back to the
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: Virginia Mason Athletic Center and Seahawks headquarters. We're in about
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: 15 minutes time. We're going to be talking to whoever
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: the starting quarterback press conference person that Seahawks present to us.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: I think they should put both Sam Donald and Drew Locke.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: What do you think, Ian Furness, back at the studios
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: in Elliott Bay?
- 1:13:54Speaker 8: Yeah, that's an interesting one. Probably get it. Yeah, I think,
- 1:14:00Speaker 8: I mean, that would be the thing to do just
- 1:14:02Speaker 8: to kind of mess with everybody.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:14:05Speaker 8: I forgot about that's the protocol today. Yeah, you get
- 1:14:08Speaker 8: the starting quarterback, so who is it going to be?
- 1:14:11Speaker 8: And will that person actually be the starting quarterback? I
- 1:14:14Speaker 8: don't think they're not putting Sam out there. It's got
- 1:14:16Speaker 8: to be Drew.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: You don't think? You don't think? I think now that
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: he's back to practice, it's a good possibility. Limited, though.
- 1:14:21Speaker 8: I think you leave it kind of open and open-ended
- 1:14:23Speaker 8: because I think they like the little mystery.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: I don't know. Oh, I know they like the little mystery.
- 1:14:28Speaker 8: That's why you do it. You say, hey, we'll put
- 1:14:31Speaker 8: Drew out there, and Drew can say, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:14:34Speaker 8: I'll be prepared. It's a simple thing. I'm prepared to start.
- 1:14:37Speaker 8: You know, if Sam's ready to go, that's fine, but
- 1:14:38Speaker 8: I'm preparing like I'm the starter. I mean, he must
- 1:14:40Speaker 8: have taken most of the reps yesterday if Sam was limited, right?
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: Well, by convention, it means that fewer 50% of the
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: double snaps. Right, right. But Darnold takes 100% when he's practicing. Right, so. So, yeah,
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: he's short of that. Today's the day. I mean, if
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Darnold's body's good enough where he's going to get more
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: first-team reps, then he's going to start. Yeah. If he's not,
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: then he's not.
- 1:15:01Speaker 8: Yeah, no, I get it. Why do you hate the Mariners?
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: That Bellingham guy and I actually went back and forth
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: and reached a common ground on that. Yeah, I just
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: hate the opportunity they're wasting. I mean, I really like
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: the Mariners. I like the people that work there. I
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: know a lot of people in the front office. I
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: know a lot of people around the clubhouse, guys that
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: have been there for 20 years when I used to
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: cover them daily for the AP. I want them to succeed.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: And it frustrates me when I go to the yard
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: and just see stupid plays or Naylor not running out
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: of ground ball or throwing balls in the stands. That
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: just drives me crazy.
- 1:15:33Speaker 8: You know, I think you can like the team and
- 1:15:36Speaker 8: be a fan of the team and yet hate that
- 1:15:38Speaker 8: particular version of the team.
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:15:40Speaker 8: I mean, I've gone through that with Wazoo before a lot.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: Hey.
- 1:15:45Speaker 8: Any Ernie Kent coach team, for example.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: You and Ernie Kent, man.
- 1:15:49Speaker 8: Most of the Paul Wolf, well, he stole money. I mean,
- 1:15:51Speaker 8: basically didn't do anything. But, you know, a lot of
- 1:15:55Speaker 8: the Paul Wolf teams hated, so forth. I hated the
- 1:15:58Speaker 8: last half of the John Mateer era. That season, that
- 1:16:01Speaker 8: was fun.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: Although, you know what?
- 1:16:02Speaker 8: Oklahoma's getting their taste of it now, so enjoy.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: Yeah, they are. How could you not, if you're a
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: Mariner fan, not hate this season? I mean, it's the
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: most disappointing in team history.
- 1:16:12Speaker 8: Yeah, I think, too, like what Sheehan said last week,
- 1:16:16Speaker 8: and that's based on his numbers and his research, the
- 1:16:21Speaker 8: most disappointing team ever. in MLB in this century, since 2000.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: And that's based on what? Previous season versus.
- 1:16:30Speaker 8: Yeah, and projected war. I mean, just all the projections
- 1:16:33Speaker 8: and everything like that. I mean, there's no team that
- 1:16:35Speaker 8: has been worse that was expected to be better than
- 1:16:37Speaker 8: this team. I mean, it's one thing if they missed
- 1:16:41Speaker 8: the playoffs this season and they had like 86 wins
- 1:16:43Speaker 8: or something, right? That's not the case, right? So, I mean,
- 1:16:48Speaker 8: that's the hard part. That's definitely not the case. They're
- 1:16:51Speaker 8: a team that's... the division winner could end up having
- 1:16:56Speaker 8: a sub-500 record.
- 1:16:59Speaker 11: Yes.
- 1:16:59Speaker 8: And the Rangers are already losing 1-0 today.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: They are. Oh, my God.
- 1:17:02Speaker 8: You've got to be kidding me.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: Like, really?
- 1:17:05Speaker 8: I mean, I think it's far-fetched to think that both
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: those teams are going to go winless in their Final Four.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: Who knows? Two games under. 500 is first place right now.
- 1:17:16Speaker 8: It's insane, isn't it?
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: The Trashcans and the Rangers are both 78-80. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: That's unbelievable. Oh, I lied.
- 1:17:23Speaker 8: It's 2-1 Rangers now, bottom of the first. They've taken
- 1:17:26Speaker 8: the lead. They had a lead the other day and
- 1:17:28Speaker 8: they blew it, so who knows.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: What do you got going today?
- 1:17:32Speaker 8: Ross Tucker's going to join us. His weekly visit coming
- 1:17:34Speaker 8: up at 12.20. So we'll check in with Ross. We
- 1:17:37Speaker 8: got Eno Saris at 1.20 today, probably his second-to-last visit
- 1:17:41Speaker 8: of the season with him. We'll ask him about the
- 1:17:43Speaker 8: disappointment of the baseball team. And then the unofficial star
- 1:17:46Speaker 8: of the weekend, Brandon Funston at 2 o'clock with Fantasy Football.
- 1:17:50Speaker 8: The reminder once again, Text questions at 49451, not before noon.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: High noon.
- 1:17:57Speaker 8: Last week we had two bullseyes and seven text messages
- 1:18:03Speaker 8: that came in one second after 12 o'clock.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: Seven.
- 1:18:09Speaker 8: We had another five that were two seconds after.
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: Noon last week. I love this audience so much.
- 1:18:16Speaker 8: It's one of the fun experiments, things that I watch
- 1:18:19Speaker 8: for every week. It's just crazy. So 4-9-4-5-1, you've got
- 1:18:22Speaker 8: about four minutes. So there you go.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: Ross Tucker is on the Cincinnati at Pittsburgh NFL game
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: on Sunday with the Iron Eagle on CBS. He ends
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: up next from 12 until 3 with that lineup. Thanks,
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre, back in the studio. Thanks to you. Thanks
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: for the text. Thanks for the talkbacks. I'm going to
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: go find out what starting quarterback the Seahawks are going
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: to portray here this afternoon. He ends up next on
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM.
