- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcasts on the Brink,
- 0:23Speaker 1: closing out the month of July with our good friend,
- 0:27Speaker 1: the Coach, Brian ton Sony.
- 0:29Speaker 2: You know him from the Assembly Call also del Phi Bracketology.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Before we get to Coach, just wanted to take a
- 0:38Speaker 2: quick moment thank everybody for listening to the show. We
- 0:40Speaker 2: appreciate your support. If you're listening over on Apple Podcast

- 0:52Speaker 2: ten fan who might enjoy the content. Again, we really
- 0:56Speaker 2: do appreciate the support. Thanks for the growth of the
- 0:58Speaker 2: show over the last couple of years. Been fun to watch.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Appreciate everyone who checks us out anywhere, So thanks again. Coach,
- 1:08Speaker 2: welcome back to the show. Congratulations first off on your retirement.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I know you got to enjoy some golf this morning.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I know you got some different travel coming up. What's
- 1:22Speaker 2: it been like so far being retired. I know you
- 1:27Speaker 2: told me before I hit record here that some of
- 1:29Speaker 2: your colleagues from the past will have to be heading
- 1:32Speaker 2: back to school next week, so you'll be not heading
- 1:37Speaker 2: back to school you'll be listening to podcasts, reading, enjoying
- 1:40Speaker 2: your day. So that's got to be a nice feeling
- 1:42Speaker 2: for you.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for having me.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Always always enjoyable being on the podcast with you.
- 1:48Speaker 3: And retirement's been great.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Not having a schedule and not having the stress of
- 1:52Speaker 4: even thinking about a schedule coming up as school returns
- 1:54Speaker 4: has been the biggest blessing. My golf game's getting a
- 1:57Speaker 4: little bit better, but bogey seem to be the word
- 2:01Speaker 4: for my scorecard most times. And it's just fun to
- 2:05Speaker 4: be able to plan things and do things when you
- 2:10Speaker 4: want to and not just on the weekends or in
- 2:12Speaker 4: the evenings. And you know, thirty two years in education.
- 2:17Speaker 4: My wife retired, she had thirty six years in education.
- 2:19Speaker 4: We feel very good about that. We're gonna miss a
- 2:21Speaker 4: lot of aspects of that, but we're also looking forward
- 2:24Speaker 4: to the new things. And Alex, now I'm kind of
- 2:28Speaker 4: using bad words when I mess up a crossword puzzle,
- 2:31Speaker 4: so I'm definitely in the older generation now where I
- 2:34Speaker 4: used to just coach and yell at kids, now it's
- 2:37Speaker 4: at the crossword puzzle.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So one thing I did want to ask you about
- 2:40Speaker 2: with the retirement, and we've talked about this maybe in
- 2:43Speaker 2: the past when I've had you on to talk bracketology.
- 2:46Speaker 2: How does that change things for del Fi bracketology because
- 2:49Speaker 2: I know that's something we've enjoyed all of us that
- 2:51Speaker 2: cover college basketball now for a long time. What's your
- 2:55Speaker 2: involvement going to look like moving forward with that and
- 2:58Speaker 2: will that continue on with somebody else the helm. Are
- 3:00Speaker 2: you still going to kind of manage that, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 2: even though you're not going to be in the school
- 3:05Speaker 2: every day.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks for the kind words about bracketology. It's been
- 3:09Speaker 4: awesome for what ten to eleven years. I'm going to
- 3:12Speaker 4: work remote and do a lot of the stuff that
- 3:14Speaker 4: I did when I was teaching, but do it from home.
- 3:17Speaker 4: The leadership at school is going to take on a
- 3:19Speaker 4: new look with a new gentleman taking over that. Those
- 3:23Speaker 4: are the two guys, the faculty members who I golfed
- 3:25Speaker 4: with today, So we had some conversations about how that's
- 3:28Speaker 4: going to look. And I live thirty seconds from the school,
- 3:32Speaker 4: so when they have a meeting or a call out,
- 3:34Speaker 4: I'm likely to go back in and it'll be very
- 3:38Speaker 4: very similar. We have some website issues we need to
- 3:41Speaker 4: take care of here to get our website up and
- 3:43Speaker 4: running for the basketball season. But it'll continue in the
- 3:47Speaker 4: same fashion that it has in the past. The only
- 3:51Speaker 4: change would be the leadership at school as opposed to
- 3:55Speaker 4: a new person there instead of me.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and hopefully your new schedule, maybe we'll give you
- 3:59Speaker 2: a little bit more flexibility to get to some more games.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I know you did that the last couple of years.
- 4:04Speaker 2: You know, I saw your time and time at IU games.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I know you got to Purdue. They were always accommodating.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I believe Illinois I think was another one you maybe
- 4:10Speaker 2: went to. So so now you don't have to worry
- 4:13Speaker 2: about those early wake up calls. Maybe the next day
- 4:15Speaker 2: after a school day, maybe you can get to a
- 4:17Speaker 2: couple more venues.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Who knows exactly. It's it's been great, Alex, the welcome
- 4:23Speaker 4: that we've had Butler also in Notre Dame, those schools,
- 4:27Speaker 4: but we've also traveled up to We've traveled to Iowa,
- 4:30Speaker 4: Ohio state. Different guys and students have been able to go.
- 4:34Speaker 4: So it's really been incredible, the you know, the recognition
- 4:39Speaker 4: we get and yeah, now I can I don't have
- 4:41Speaker 4: to worry drive real fast after school to get somewhere
- 4:43Speaker 4: in two hours. I can go and have a nice
- 4:45Speaker 4: dinner and and then go to the game. So that's
- 4:48Speaker 4: that's definitely a benefit of retirement.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Well, that's gonna be awesome to see congratulations once again.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I know he's happy for you, and it's going to
- 4:55Speaker 2: be just a kind of an awesome next chapter. I
- 4:57Speaker 2: know you'll probably be down there for some IU football games. Well,
- 5:00Speaker 2: so that'll be fun too, fun for.
- 5:02Speaker 3: You to be able to do that.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Wanted to have you on because I know you guys
- 5:07Speaker 2: over at the assembly call did some postgame shows from
- 5:11Speaker 2: the streaming that we got from the games down in Lima, Peru.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Those were touch and go depending on which game you
- 5:19Speaker 2: tuned in for. To I use credit, they did have
- 5:23Speaker 2: their own stream I think for a couple of the
- 5:25Speaker 2: final games, which was easier for me at least to
- 5:29Speaker 2: watch than the FISU provided stream. But the fact that
- 5:34Speaker 2: we even got to watch these games, you know, I
- 5:36Speaker 2: can think back to the first time I went on
- 5:38Speaker 2: one of these trips was Montreal back in twenty fourteen,
- 5:41Speaker 2: and I you played I think it was five games
- 5:43Speaker 2: in six days. There was streaming for maybe one of
- 5:45Speaker 2: those games at that time, so people really couldn't see
- 5:48Speaker 2: the games then they went to I believe the Bahamas
- 5:52Speaker 2: another time there was no streaming for that, and then
- 5:54Speaker 2: Puerto Rico last year there was no streaming. So the
- 5:57Speaker 2: fact that we got streaming I think was a big
- 5:59Speaker 2: plus for a lot of people. You know, obviously it's
- 6:03Speaker 2: not the same production quality of a Big ten broadcast,
- 6:06Speaker 2: but the fact that we were able to see some
- 6:07Speaker 2: of these games. We also got the bonus of having
- 6:09Speaker 2: the exhibition game a couple of weeks ago in Assembly
- 6:12Speaker 2: Hall for those who were able to go.
- 6:14Speaker 5: And watch that. But I wanted to have you on.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I want to preface this whole conversation by saying anything
- 6:20Speaker 2: we talk about here is kind of you know, I
- 6:26Speaker 2: don't want to say invalid, but you know, the competition
- 6:30Speaker 2: level that Indiana played down there was not what they expected.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I don't think going in If you listened to Darren
- 6:36Speaker 2: de Reese's press conference, it was you know, the fifteenth,
- 6:40Speaker 2: I think was the night they had that exhibition game
- 6:42Speaker 2: in Assembly Hall, and he talked about, you know, Baylor
- 6:45Speaker 2: going to the FISU event last year, and that was
- 6:47Speaker 2: the World University Games, which is a little bit different.
- 6:49Speaker 2: It was over in Germany. There was more teams involved
- 6:52Speaker 2: Baylor actually lost in that event, and so I think
- 6:55Speaker 2: Indiana kind of went into this with the idea of
- 6:57Speaker 2: there's a chance that we're going to play a team
- 6:58Speaker 2: that can knock us off. Well, they got down there
- 7:01Speaker 2: and the schedule changed, there was actually less teams and
- 7:04Speaker 2: I think than they expected to be down there. The
- 7:06Speaker 2: competition level, as we quickly saw, was not to the
- 7:09Speaker 2: to the level as I mentioned earlier than Indian thought.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But I still think there's some things worth discussing that
- 7:14Speaker 2: we were able to see. And I had the benefit
- 7:17Speaker 2: of going to three open practices as well this summer,
- 7:19Speaker 2: so I kind of got a chance to see Indiana
- 7:21Speaker 2: in a lot of different situations the exhibition game as well.
- 7:25Speaker 2: But I wanted to just get your thoughts big picture.
- 7:30Speaker 2: You obviously watched this team as closely as anybody last season.
- 7:33Speaker 2: You know, you watch all the games, you talk about them.
- 7:36Speaker 2: The postgame shows what in your mind have you learned
- 7:42Speaker 2: maybe so far about this team and how it's going
- 7:44Speaker 2: to look different than last year based on you know,
- 7:46Speaker 2: what we've seen this month.
- 7:48Speaker 4: I think the talent level is just so much better
- 7:52Speaker 4: than it was last year, and you know, credit to
- 7:56Speaker 4: making the change from year one. You know, in watching
- 7:59Speaker 4: last year, I was a big believer in coach davriez scheme,
- 8:03Speaker 4: but I don't know that they had all the players
- 8:05Speaker 4: one through nine, one through ten, whoever's in the rotation
- 8:08Speaker 4: of executing that on a nightly basis. And you know,
- 8:12Speaker 4: Wilkerson and Tucker Devrez did a really nice job of
- 8:14Speaker 4: shooting the basketball, but Indiana was basically one dimensional. If
- 8:18Speaker 4: they were able to get shots and hit shots, they
- 8:21Speaker 4: were going to be competitive. But the point guard play
- 8:24Speaker 4: what was not a scoring you know position necessarily, and
- 8:30Speaker 4: he had some drop off there late in the year
- 8:31Speaker 4: with Conorway and the post game alexis, I like his game,
- 8:35Speaker 4: but he's a backup post player, right, And you really didn't.
- 8:38Speaker 4: They were just guarding them one on one. There was
- 8:41Speaker 4: no force to double team or anything. So the takeaway
- 8:46Speaker 4: with all the caveats about competition and everything, is the
- 8:49Speaker 4: talent is better. There are ability to score. Eight players
- 8:54Speaker 4: at least and Igatulo Igatolo I haven't seen yet. And
- 8:58Speaker 4: Sicily can score, but I think he's just more of
- 9:01Speaker 4: a glue guy. But eight guys with great offensive ability
- 9:05Speaker 4: in three different ways. Alex, you can post people, you
- 9:09Speaker 4: can shoot the three, and you can drive the lane
- 9:11Speaker 4: with multiple players three levels, and so you know, I
- 9:16Speaker 4: can't sit here today and tell you it's good enough
- 9:18Speaker 4: to you know, win to Big ten or go to
- 9:21Speaker 4: the Sweet sixteen. But it is a lot different because
- 9:24Speaker 4: of the scoring at three different levels. Really puts pressure
- 9:27Speaker 4: on a defense and a coach in preparing for Indiana.
- 9:30Speaker 4: And I think you're a lot deeper in the ability
- 9:34Speaker 4: to score the basketball instead of just two or three guys.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Obviously, the guy that most people I think have been
- 9:40Speaker 2: talking about are excited about Aiden Cherrell coming over from Alabama.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Obviously he was kind of the prize going back to
- 9:47Speaker 2: the spring. Marcus Burton to an extent too, but I
- 9:49Speaker 2: think most people were excited about Aiden Sharrell. And I
- 9:53Speaker 2: asked of Reiz actually about this in the last press conference,
- 9:57Speaker 2: because you know, I talked to a friend who covered
- 10:01Speaker 2: a team that played Alabama last year in the NCAA Tournament,
- 10:04Speaker 2: and he was watching one of the streams from down
- 10:08Speaker 2: in Peru and he asked me who's number twenty two,
- 10:11Speaker 2: And I was like, that's Aiden Cherrell. He's like, I
- 10:14Speaker 2: hardly didn't recognize him because he looked different from how
- 10:17Speaker 2: he looked last year when he's played at Alabama. You know,
- 10:20Speaker 2: I asked iv Reeze about that. He talked about just
- 10:22Speaker 2: how much better shape he's in. He seems to be
- 10:25Speaker 2: moving a lot better. What have been your impression so
- 10:29Speaker 2: far of him? Just watching him playing the four? I
- 10:32Speaker 2: think is going to be an adjustment a little bit.
- 10:34Speaker 2: He did play that position in high school. I think
- 10:37Speaker 2: part of the reason that he wanted to come to
- 10:38Speaker 2: Indiana is because he was going to have that opportunity, though,
- 10:41Speaker 2: to play the four. He can step out shoot the
- 10:43Speaker 2: three ball a little bit. But he didn't play a
- 10:46Speaker 2: ton of minutes down in Peru, but he still had
- 10:48Speaker 2: really good numbers. I think shot better than sixty percent
- 10:50Speaker 2: from the field. He could have probably had thirty five
- 10:54Speaker 2: points and twenty five rebounds every game if he would
- 10:56Speaker 2: have played his hardest and played every game. But he's
- 10:59Speaker 2: really impressed me so far with just how solid he's
- 11:04Speaker 2: looked overall. I mean, he's obviously in much better shape.
- 11:07Speaker 2: He's in former McDonald's All American. He got better from
- 11:10Speaker 2: this freshman to sophomore year. So now you kind of
- 11:12Speaker 2: project forward if he's in better shape, he's in a
- 11:14Speaker 2: situation where obviously he's a little bit more comfortable with
- 11:17Speaker 2: the role he's going to have. I think he's a
- 11:19Speaker 2: guy that you look at and say, right now, he's
- 11:21Speaker 2: Indiana's best player, at least entering the fall.
- 11:24Speaker 3: I think you're right on that.
- 11:25Speaker 4: I think he's number one on the scouting report, and
- 11:28Speaker 4: if not one, he's one B. You know, with Marcus
- 11:32Speaker 4: Burton being one, A who's going to have the ball
- 11:33Speaker 4: in his hands and coming off ball screen, So you're
- 11:35Speaker 4: going to have to have a way to guard those
- 11:38Speaker 4: two when you put him in actions right, So what
- 11:41Speaker 4: you saw was the ability to hit the three. You
- 11:43Speaker 4: saw the short roll off a pick and roll where
- 11:46Speaker 4: he was able to shoot a twelve fifteen footer, but
- 11:48Speaker 4: he also put it on the deck and got to
- 11:51Speaker 4: the rim from that kind of action, and then you
- 11:53Speaker 4: could post up so offensively, you know, I talked about
- 11:56Speaker 4: three levels. Aiden Cherrelle is going to be the best
- 12:00Speaker 4: player because you know, you guard him smaller with the
- 12:03Speaker 4: small person, he's gonna post you up if you if
- 12:06Speaker 4: you have a big, he can come out and stretch
- 12:08Speaker 4: the floor and that I really enjoy watching college basketball
- 12:12Speaker 4: with the stretch four. I just think that's modern basketball.
- 12:15Speaker 4: And the ability to shoot the three, and coach DeVries
- 12:17Speaker 4: has always given confidence to shooters, and so you saw
- 12:22Speaker 4: that in these games in Peru that you know, they
- 12:24Speaker 4: weren't passing up shots. The first game, I think they
- 12:26Speaker 4: missed some, and then they had a couple of games
- 12:30Speaker 4: where they were shot at pretty good percentage. But the
- 12:33Speaker 4: thing that's good about him too is his ability to
- 12:35Speaker 4: protect the rim as rim protection. And then you know,
- 12:38Speaker 4: Coach Devrees talked in the last press conference about offensive
- 12:42Speaker 4: rebounding but also defensive rebounding. I thought that was a
- 12:44Speaker 4: problem last year all in all for Indiana because of
- 12:48Speaker 4: its size and athleticism, and it seems like, you know
- 12:51Speaker 4: what I saw in Peru, Cherrell has the ability to
- 12:55Speaker 4: really help offensively and defensively for this Indiana Hoosier squad.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and seeing him up close, he's just a gigantic
- 13:04Speaker 2: human being. But the crazy part is when he stands
- 13:08Speaker 2: next to Cemet Ikatoglu, he looks small because he's a
- 13:13Speaker 2: legit seven foot two. We didn't see him obviously down
- 13:16Speaker 2: and prove he played in the exhibition game at Assembly
- 13:19Speaker 2: Hall wasn't the best night for him.
- 13:22Speaker 5: He played just okay.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I thought I saw him in the three open practices,
- 13:26Speaker 2: seems to move pretty well for a player of his size.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I'm not going to say he's, you know, a super
- 13:31Speaker 2: athlete or overly agile, but for you know, you see
- 13:36Speaker 2: a lot of guys who are that big and they
- 13:39Speaker 2: don't move and don't seem like they can play a
- 13:41Speaker 2: ton of minutes. You know, you look at the minutes
- 13:43Speaker 2: he played last year at SMU, and he played a
- 13:45Speaker 2: healthy amount of minutes. I think foul trouble is you know,
- 13:48Speaker 2: a question mark for him. But how do you see
- 13:50Speaker 2: that combo working together next season? The two of those
- 13:57Speaker 2: guys on the court together, It's obviously gonna be a
- 14:00Speaker 2: lot different than what we saw last season with having
- 14:03Speaker 2: a four man and and Tucker tove Reeze is obviously
- 14:06Speaker 2: not a not a post up player, not a guy
- 14:09Speaker 2: that is going to give you much in terms of
- 14:11Speaker 2: inside rim protection. Is there any concern from your side
- 14:16Speaker 2: of things on how that fits together?
- 14:19Speaker 4: I think for me, being a defensive minded is how
- 14:22Speaker 4: are you going to guard quicker fours? But the league
- 14:25Speaker 4: has been big. I mean Michigan with its monster bigs
- 14:28Speaker 4: one won the national championship. Illinois often plays two bigs,
- 14:32Speaker 4: including a big that can shoot the three. So I
- 14:35Speaker 4: think I think coach de Freeze will find a way
- 14:37Speaker 4: to make it happen. And really you have Cherrell who
- 14:41Speaker 4: will play that stretch forward and be in ball screens
- 14:44Speaker 4: quite a bit, and you'll have Igatolo in a dunker
- 14:47Speaker 4: spot or to post up. And what I think is
- 14:49Speaker 4: really going to be interesting to see is you post
- 14:52Speaker 4: up Igatolo. Are you just gonna play one on one
- 14:55Speaker 4: or do you have to send someone right to help?
- 14:57Speaker 3: Right?
- 14:58Speaker 4: And if he is a weapon in there, now you
- 15:01Speaker 4: have to send somebody right. It's the same as are
- 15:04Speaker 4: you going to trap Burton off the ball pick and roll?
- 15:06Speaker 4: Are you going to play drop coverage? If you're gonna
- 15:08Speaker 4: play drop coverage, now you have a four who can
- 15:10Speaker 4: pick and pop. So I do think that you have
- 15:13Speaker 4: seen in college basketball multiple bigs be successful and they're
- 15:18Speaker 4: not just low post and flash of the high posts
- 15:20Speaker 4: like the old days. In a two post situation, you
- 15:23Speaker 4: generally have that four that can step out and do
- 15:27Speaker 4: some things. And I think that's the way that it'll
- 15:30Speaker 4: fit together on the offensive side. On the defensive side,
- 15:32Speaker 4: you have two big guys you can just throw the
- 15:34Speaker 4: ball up against the glass and block stuff and go rebound,
- 15:37Speaker 4: which again helps you win basketball games that Indiana did
- 15:40Speaker 4: not have on its roster last year.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I think one of the things that people came out
- 15:46Speaker 2: of this trip most excited about was just to play
- 15:49Speaker 2: the freshman. And again this is all caveated by the
- 15:52Speaker 2: fact that this was inferior competition. You know, nobody's saying
- 15:56Speaker 2: that Von it's Carvello. By the way, I don't know
- 16:00Speaker 2: how people have been pronouncing it.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I've heard it.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I heard it going into like the spring as Carvalla,
- 16:06Speaker 2: but checked with some people close to the program and
- 16:10Speaker 2: being at the open practices, it's actually Von Carvila. So
- 16:14Speaker 2: he played well down there. Trevor Manhurts actually also played
- 16:18Speaker 2: really well. Prince Alexander Moody. Out of those three players,
- 16:22Speaker 2: anything stand out in terms of what you saw from
- 16:25Speaker 2: those three and how they can help next season. In
- 16:28Speaker 2: my mind, this is just me speaking my opinion from
- 16:31Speaker 2: seeing kind of open practices, Moody to me, looks the
- 16:34Speaker 2: most ready to make an impact. I don't read too
- 16:37Speaker 2: much into the numbers that you know, the carvel had
- 16:39Speaker 2: a thirty two point game down there. Man Hurts made
- 16:41Speaker 2: some threes, you know, I look at the level of competition.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I think both of those guys long term are guys
- 16:46Speaker 2: that you look at and say, we need to retain
- 16:49Speaker 2: these guys and develop them and by the time they're sophomores, juniors,
- 16:52Speaker 2: hopefully seniors, they're guys that are really helping your program.
- 16:55Speaker 2: But going into next season, I look at Moody and say,
- 16:58Speaker 2: he's the guy that might be the most ready to
- 17:01Speaker 2: plug him play of the three.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I think overall, the freshman is the ability to
- 17:06Speaker 4: score the basketball. You know, and again we've talked about
- 17:11Speaker 4: the competition level, but they're not shy. When the ball
- 17:14Speaker 4: is open, they shoot, and I think that's the freshman.
- 17:16Speaker 4: I also think that's coach Devrees is bringing that attitude
- 17:19Speaker 4: that we haven't seen in a long time at Indiana.
- 17:23Speaker 4: They have offensive ability. Carvila, did I say that right?
- 17:28Speaker 4: Is that how you pronounce Carverla? I loved his tenacity,
- 17:31Speaker 4: just playing hard, and then I agree with you. I
- 17:35Speaker 4: think the most ready is Prince Alexander Moody. And some
- 17:37Speaker 4: people say, well, he didn't score as much, but physically
- 17:40Speaker 4: and the fact that he can handle the ball, and
- 17:42Speaker 4: that's you know, lindsay, point guard Burton Will be the
- 17:45Speaker 4: first point guard, Lindsay will handle at second, and then
- 17:47Speaker 4: you can bring in Prince Alexander Moody and he's got
- 17:50Speaker 4: all three of those guys can handle the basketball in
- 17:53Speaker 4: pick and roll and score at the rim and shoot
- 17:55Speaker 4: the three. So you now have three point guards that
- 17:58Speaker 4: can really play well offensively, which is going to you know,
- 18:03Speaker 4: be good for tired files or whatever. But Prince Alexander
- 18:08Speaker 4: Moody seems the most physically fit, and I think the
- 18:10Speaker 4: key alex for the freshman is going to be one physicality.
- 18:13Speaker 4: They got to work on their bodies and when does
- 18:15Speaker 4: the coaching staff feel that they are strong enough to
- 18:18Speaker 4: handle the riggers of the Big Ten. But it's also
- 18:20Speaker 4: going to come down to something that we all don't
- 18:22Speaker 4: talk about a lot, as defense. I thought if there
- 18:25Speaker 4: was one thing that I saw in the games that
- 18:27Speaker 4: I saw was they were fighting really hard to guard
- 18:30Speaker 4: the bounce against the quick twitch athletes, especially the virgin Islands.
- 18:33Speaker 4: And you just know that there's a lot of athletes
- 18:36Speaker 4: like that on the schedule too, and especially the freshmen.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Now it was cleaned up by the bigs, and I
- 18:43Speaker 4: thought they got better as the four games went on.
- 18:45Speaker 4: You saw coach DeFries put on a full court press,
- 18:48Speaker 4: and after halftime a one game they picked up their
- 18:51Speaker 4: intensity defensively. But you saw it with Trent Sisley last year.
- 18:55Speaker 4: He played because there were some injuries and stuff, but
- 18:58Speaker 4: then you know, it seemed like he was lost a
- 19:01Speaker 4: little bit or struggled little bit on the defensive end
- 19:03Speaker 4: and he fell out of the rotation. Well, Carvela and
- 19:06Speaker 4: Manhurtz looked great offensively, and that's gonna be a benefit
- 19:10Speaker 4: down the road. Once they pick up the defensive ideals
- 19:14Speaker 4: and understand how to guard at this next level, then
- 19:17Speaker 4: they'll start getting meaningful minutes next season.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I think you bring up a really good point about Burton,
- 19:23Speaker 2: Lindsay and Moody as a trio, what they provide as
- 19:27Speaker 2: a threat offensively. And again this is no knock on
- 19:29Speaker 2: Connor in right, because I thought last season he did
- 19:31Speaker 2: an admiral job of doing what he was asked to do.
- 19:34Speaker 2: He was kind of put in an impossible situation really,
- 19:37Speaker 2: because I think if you asked anyone before last season,
- 19:43Speaker 2: is in right gonna be a guy that's playing thirty
- 19:45Speaker 2: thirty five minutes in some games and being your starter
- 19:48Speaker 2: at point guard, you probably would have said no, But
- 19:49Speaker 2: with what happened with Connorway kind of falling out of favor,
- 19:53Speaker 2: Enwright was kind of thrust into that role. They didn't
- 19:55Speaker 2: really have any other choice, and he played the role
- 19:58Speaker 2: that he was asked to play, but he wasn't an
- 19:59Speaker 2: offensive threats. So having three guys on the court that
- 20:03Speaker 2: I'm not saying that any I mean, I think Bryce
- 20:05Speaker 2: Lindsay can go out and Burton can go out and
- 20:07Speaker 2: get you twenty or twenty five on a given I mean,
- 20:09Speaker 2: Bryce Lindsay just did it in the NCAA Tournament. He
- 20:11Speaker 2: made six to three pointers in his last game at Villanova.
- 20:14Speaker 2: He's a proven guy, Moody, I don't necessarily think he's
- 20:17Speaker 2: gonna be someone you look at and say he's gonna
- 20:19Speaker 2: maybe go off and have a huge offensive night. But
- 20:21Speaker 2: I think he can go score is particularly from the
- 20:23Speaker 2: mid range, and also he's strong enough if he does
- 20:26Speaker 2: get into the lane he can score at the rim.
- 20:29Speaker 2: But I think offensively, Indiana's going to be a lot
- 20:34Speaker 2: more versatile in terms of the ways they can score
- 20:37Speaker 2: as a team because they're not gonna be so dependent
- 20:39Speaker 2: on the three pointer. Would you agree with that? Is
- 20:41Speaker 2: there anything we're kind of overlooking this in terms of
- 20:44Speaker 2: what they potentially lost with obviously with Lamar Wilkerson in
- 20:47Speaker 2: the three pointers, and I think some other guys. I
- 20:50Speaker 2: don't think they're going to be the same from a
- 20:52Speaker 2: volume makes and taking and making as many threes next season,
- 20:57Speaker 2: but I think the ways that they can score maybe
- 21:01Speaker 2: going to be a little bit more balanced next season,
- 21:04Speaker 2: maybe a little bit less prone to those kind of
- 21:06Speaker 2: long offensive drafts that we saw at times when shots
- 21:08Speaker 2: just simply weren't falling from the perimeter.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Yeah, not only different methods of scoring, but also different personnel.
- 21:16Speaker 4: We haven't talked about Darren Harris. He didn't score in
- 21:19Speaker 4: the first Virgin Island games, then he came back and
- 21:21Speaker 4: ahead of what seventeen point game and hit you know,
- 21:23Speaker 4: four or five threes. Indiana is going to be a
- 21:26Speaker 4: little more difficult to scout a little more difficult to
- 21:30Speaker 4: defend because you have multiple people who can score the basketball,
- 21:35Speaker 4: and so you know there can be you know, someone
- 21:38Speaker 4: one day score twenty and the next. Marcus Burton didn't
- 21:42Speaker 4: score an awful lot and was one of the better
- 21:43Speaker 4: scorers at Order Dame in the ACC and I wonder
- 21:46Speaker 4: if coach Devretese talked to him about, hey, just get
- 21:48Speaker 4: this offense going right now. We know you can score.
- 21:50Speaker 4: We can come to you with our sets or our actions,
- 21:53Speaker 4: or put the ball in your hands for a big
- 21:55Speaker 4: shot when it needs to. You don't need to score
- 21:57Speaker 4: right now, but we know he can score. He can score.
- 22:01Speaker 4: We haven't seen it on the court with Harris yet,
- 22:03Speaker 4: but he was recruited by Duke and just he was
- 22:05Speaker 4: overplayed by some guys that are in the NBA. So
- 22:10Speaker 4: you know, yes, I think you're you're right. I think
- 22:12Speaker 4: that's the most exciting thing that I have seen so
- 22:15Speaker 4: far is multiple players, multiple ways of scoring the basketball.
- 22:19Speaker 4: That gives coach his whole playbook right and instead of
- 22:24Speaker 4: just a few and again you had to take away
- 22:26Speaker 4: Wilkerson and Tucker Deries last year and then you went
- 22:30Speaker 4: to battle with the others. Well, now you're not so
- 22:32Speaker 4: sure when you're playing Indiana. You know, yes, there's gonna
- 22:35Speaker 4: be one and two on the scattering report, but three, four,
- 22:37Speaker 4: and five and six and maybe even seven can bite
- 22:40Speaker 4: you on a given night.
- 22:42Speaker 2: I still think the biggest question mark for me about
- 22:46Speaker 2: this team, and we're not going to get answers to
- 22:48Speaker 2: this until November when they start playing some regular season
- 22:54Speaker 2: games against some pretty good teams, and they open November
- 22:56Speaker 2: with some strong out of conference games and different opponents.
- 23:01Speaker 2: I think that are gonna give them some tests. But
- 23:03Speaker 2: the biggest question for me still is defensively, is this
- 23:08Speaker 2: team gonna be good enough to make that move up
- 23:11Speaker 2: to Big ten because last year they really fall off
- 23:14Speaker 2: a cliff late in the season. Defensively, you look at
- 23:16Speaker 2: some of the numbers in conference play just simply weren't
- 23:19Speaker 2: good enough. Didn't There's too many games that are giving
- 23:22Speaker 2: up you know, one point one, one point two points
- 23:24Speaker 2: per possession. I mean that's great if you're scoring one
- 23:27Speaker 2: point three, you know a game and you're hitting all
- 23:30Speaker 2: these threes. But when you have those off nights where
- 23:32Speaker 2: you can't make a bucket and you can't stop anybody,
- 23:33Speaker 2: it's a recipe for disaster.
- 23:37Speaker 5: I still want to.
- 23:38Speaker 2: See defensively is this There's a couple things for me,
- 23:44Speaker 2: and I'm curious to get your thoughts on if you
- 23:46Speaker 2: think these are areas where they can be better. Defensive
- 23:49Speaker 2: rebounding absolutely has to be better. I think on paper
- 23:53Speaker 2: they have to be just based on having shrill and
- 23:56Speaker 2: Egotobulu I mean, those are two really big guys, and
- 23:59Speaker 2: you would think they be pretty solid at cleaning up
- 24:01Speaker 2: the defensive glass. The other thing to me is can
- 24:04Speaker 2: they force any turnovers and get any easy buckets in transition?
- 24:08Speaker 2: Thinking back to last season, they they didn't Indiana. Everything
- 24:13Speaker 2: that they got was just offensively was mainly three pointers
- 24:17Speaker 2: and a lot of tough shots. I mean, Lamar Wilkerson,
- 24:20Speaker 2: he could make tough shots, but he took a lot
- 24:22Speaker 2: of tough shots. There wasn't ever a game where you know,
- 24:25Speaker 2: they were putting pressure on guys defensively and getting themselves
- 24:29Speaker 2: a ton of opportunities to get in transition and score.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Do you think the defensive rebounding and do you think
- 24:35Speaker 2: defensively they're going to be able to do more things
- 24:37Speaker 2: to create some easy scoring opportunities? Are those areas you
- 24:42Speaker 2: can see this team being better at.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know that the bar was, you know,
- 24:48Speaker 4: the set so low that they got to be better
- 24:50Speaker 4: is part of the issue.
- 24:51Speaker 3: But yeah, you have to rebound, you know.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Bringing in someone like Mustaf Jayden Mustaff, his physicality stood
- 24:59Speaker 4: out to me and and what I saw, and again
- 25:01Speaker 4: that's not any stats or anything like that, but his
- 25:03Speaker 4: ability to go get rebounds, his ability to drive the
- 25:06Speaker 4: basketball on the offensive end. And then again I'll say
- 25:10Speaker 4: that coach de Friese was happy with the emphasis on
- 25:12Speaker 4: offensive rebounding towards the end of the Peru trip, So
- 25:16Speaker 4: you know that it is a point of emphasis in
- 25:18Speaker 4: the program right now. Is the rebound and when you
- 25:21Speaker 4: bring in the bigs that Indiana did, there are going
- 25:24Speaker 4: to be a better rebounding team. The question is, and
- 25:26Speaker 4: I'm with you, is the defensive scheme, the ability to
- 25:28Speaker 4: stop the bounce, the help and recover. I thought there
- 25:32Speaker 4: were some communication issues early in some of those games.
- 25:35Speaker 4: And when you're switching when you're not, and when you
- 25:37Speaker 4: bring in six transfers and three freshmen and have just
- 25:40Speaker 4: Trent Sisley and a few walk ons left, the defense
- 25:44Speaker 4: is always going to be behind because everyone loves to
- 25:46Speaker 4: play offense and pays attention to the offense, and you
- 25:48Speaker 4: really put that stuff in first, so you know what
- 25:50Speaker 4: you have and then you got to you build your defense.
- 25:54Speaker 4: But I think if coach was given the honest or
- 25:57Speaker 4: we were in the film room after the trip, I
- 26:00Speaker 4: think he would say that the offense is way ahead
- 26:02Speaker 4: of the defense right now, and so getting turnovers is important.
- 26:06Speaker 4: I thought they did push the pace, but again, that's
- 26:09Speaker 4: kind of hard to tell in in in the league
- 26:11Speaker 4: like that in the week, if that's gonna play in
- 26:14Speaker 4: the non conference opponents in the Big Ten. But the
- 26:18Speaker 4: concern for me defensively is the guards are a little small, right,
- 26:21Speaker 4: you know, and Burton and Lindsay, then how are you
- 26:23Speaker 4: gonna compensate for that?
- 26:25Speaker 3: Well, you got a couple of bigs, you know.
- 26:26Speaker 4: That's a lot different than not being able to guard
- 26:29Speaker 4: inside like Indiana wasn't last year. If I had to
- 26:33Speaker 4: pick an area to be a little small or a
- 26:35Speaker 4: little deficient, it might be size wise at the guard.
- 26:40Speaker 4: But I think both Burton and Lindsay seemed to have
- 26:43Speaker 4: some fight in him. You know, Burton played really well
- 26:47Speaker 4: and and has good quick hands and has ways to
- 26:49Speaker 4: compensate for for the lack of size.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:53Speaker 2: They I just think athletically they're better across the board.
- 26:59Speaker 2: I mean most off. We haven't talked about him. Darren
- 27:01Speaker 2: Harris I think has some question marks defensively, but I
- 27:04Speaker 2: think he's going to be a guy that you hope
- 27:06Speaker 2: that he can make two or three threes reliably a
- 27:08Speaker 2: game and have some games where maybe he can get
- 27:10Speaker 2: hot and hit five or six, and that's going to
- 27:12Speaker 2: be a huge boost offensively from what they lost from
- 27:16Speaker 2: the three point line. But just the number of guys
- 27:19Speaker 2: that they have, I think they're going to be able
- 27:21Speaker 2: to help them on a given night is a big improvement.
- 27:23Speaker 2: The last guy I wanted to talk about individually because
- 27:26Speaker 2: he doesn't really stand out when you look at what
- 27:28Speaker 2: he did down there from a statistical standpoint, But Trent
- 27:30Speaker 2: Sisley looks more comfortable to me in terms of what
- 27:34Speaker 2: his role is going to be. You mentioned him as
- 27:37Speaker 2: a blue guy. I think that's actually a pretty accurate,
- 27:41Speaker 2: you know, assessment of what he needs to embrace. He's
- 27:44Speaker 2: not going to be a guy that you throw in
- 27:46Speaker 2: the ball and say, hey, go get us, go score
- 27:48Speaker 2: for us. He's not going to be a guy that
- 27:51Speaker 2: is a leading scorer. But if he can one thing
- 27:54Speaker 2: we didn't see down there really was a three point shot.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I think he needs to prove that he can do
- 27:58Speaker 2: that with some consistency. I think he shot twenty seven
- 28:00Speaker 2: percent last year for three for the year. That's that's
- 28:03Speaker 2: not where he wants to be. But I think, you know,
- 28:06Speaker 2: rim running in transition a little bit he did a
- 28:09Speaker 2: little bit of that. He always plays hard, but if
- 28:12Speaker 2: he can get there defensively, which hopefully the year of
- 28:16Speaker 2: experience and kind of you know, getting you know, I
- 28:21Speaker 2: don't want to say a message was sent, but he
- 28:23Speaker 2: didn't play late in the season, and I think the
- 28:25Speaker 2: reason was is because they didn't feel like they could
- 28:26Speaker 2: trust him defensively. So he's he's gotten stronger in the
- 28:29Speaker 2: upper body. If he can be solid defensively, I think
- 28:33Speaker 2: a lot of the little things that he does. I
- 28:35Speaker 2: think he's got a pretty good knack for the ball.
- 28:37Speaker 2: He can be a solid rebounder. I think he can
- 28:39Speaker 2: be a valuable sixth or seventh man for this team.
- 28:42Speaker 2: And I've been really impressed with him, just not just
- 28:44Speaker 2: from the games down there, but watching him in the
- 28:46Speaker 2: in the open practices, hearing some of his teammates talk about,
- 28:50Speaker 2: you know, he's the only guy here last year, so
- 28:52Speaker 2: he's the guy I go to and talk to about
- 28:54Speaker 2: different things. He's viewed favorably in the locker room by
- 28:58Speaker 2: his teammates. I think that's a positive thing. And the
- 29:00Speaker 2: other thing that I'll give him, you know, his his
- 29:04Speaker 2: props for and maybe this shouldn't be something you get
- 29:07Speaker 2: your props for. But in an era of college basketball
- 29:09Speaker 2: where right now, the easiest thing to do when you
- 29:12Speaker 2: don't get the minutes you want or the opportunity you
- 29:15Speaker 2: want is to just pack up and say I'm leaving.
- 29:18Speaker 2: You know a lot of players you look around the
- 29:20Speaker 2: landscape of college basketball, if they would have gone through
- 29:22Speaker 2: what Trent Sisley did late in the season last year,
- 29:24Speaker 2: they were said, I'm out of here, man, I'm going
- 29:26Speaker 2: to a different place where you know, the coach is
- 29:29Speaker 2: going to tell me what I want to hear. He's
- 29:31Speaker 2: gonna say I'm gonna get more minutes. I'm gonna have
- 29:33Speaker 2: a bigger role. No, he stood, you know, he stood
- 29:36Speaker 2: stood in there. He was, you know, the last man
- 29:38Speaker 2: standing when everyone transferred out and guys left or whatever.
- 29:43Speaker 5: He stuck it out.
- 29:43Speaker 2: And I think he's going to be rewarded with with
- 29:45Speaker 2: a bigger role next season.
- 29:47Speaker 5: I think he's going to be much improved.
- 29:49Speaker 4: You took the words right out of my mouth about staying.
- 29:51Speaker 4: You know that that that speaks volumes. He wants to
- 29:54Speaker 4: be in Inana Hoosier. He wants to play for coach Debrees. Obviously,
- 29:56Speaker 4: there's some good communication from the coaching staff to the
- 29:59Speaker 4: player in that decision.
- 30:01Speaker 3: But that's huge.
- 30:02Speaker 4: And then on the basketball court, you know, he's got
- 30:04Speaker 4: to be able to guard to four and guard to
- 30:06Speaker 4: three because that's probably where he's going to be playing,
- 30:08Speaker 4: and the physicality will be important. And the defensive concepts.
- 30:12Speaker 4: You know, we don't know what was the true reason,
- 30:15Speaker 4: but we all believe that it was something defensively, but man,
- 30:18Speaker 4: the kid hustles, and there's he's a key to the rebounding,
- 30:22Speaker 4: both offensive and defensive rebounding. If if you really get
- 30:26Speaker 4: after him to go rebound and he can get four
- 30:28Speaker 4: or five a game in key moments when he's coming
- 30:31Speaker 4: off the bench, that is helpful. And and when you
- 30:34Speaker 4: have a good program, sometimes the stats don't show the
- 30:38Speaker 4: value right, and he's going to be a guy that
- 30:40Speaker 4: could really bring value without clogging up the stat sheet.
- 30:43Speaker 4: And one of the things I will tell you that
- 30:45Speaker 4: I like about him his off ball cutting. So you know,
- 30:48Speaker 4: you got you got Sharrell, and you got Burton going
- 30:50Speaker 4: off and all of a sudden you're tagging shooters or whatever.
- 30:54Speaker 4: He has a knack for cutting. You see it on
- 30:56Speaker 4: the baseline a lot. He gets some dumped down passes
- 30:58Speaker 4: and some dunks as well. Is what you mentioned. He
- 31:01Speaker 4: does get out and run and and that puts pressure
- 31:04Speaker 4: on a team too after a miss or you know,
- 31:06Speaker 4: a turnover, things like that. I like his activity level,
- 31:09Speaker 4: and so as a coach, you know, if the starters
- 31:11Speaker 4: aren't playing well, there's a little law you could bring
- 31:13Speaker 4: him in and and that his play can energize and
- 31:17Speaker 4: lift other people up too. There's there's no stat for that.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Coaches have it and they mark it down in the
- 31:22Speaker 4: film room. I see him as that that guy, and
- 31:25Speaker 4: I thought he played that role in the games and
- 31:27Speaker 4: the halves that I that I was able to see
- 31:29Speaker 4: down there in Peru.
- 31:31Speaker 5: Yeah, last season.
- 31:33Speaker 2: You know, I don't pick up a lot on a
- 31:35Speaker 2: lot of the nuances of basketball like you do, maybe
- 31:38Speaker 2: coach how the way you watch it. But there was
- 31:40Speaker 2: a couple of times last year when I was at
- 31:41Speaker 2: games at Assembly Hall where Trent Sisley sprinted down the
- 31:46Speaker 2: court faster than anybody.
- 31:48Speaker 5: And that's not something that I think.
- 31:52Speaker 2: It's definitely not something that's talked about on all these
- 31:54Speaker 2: recruiting sites or you know, it's not in highlights. But
- 31:57Speaker 2: a guy that's willing to hustle and do the little thing.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I think the fundamentals come are huge when it comes
- 32:04Speaker 2: to winning, and I think from a fundamental standpoint, obviously
- 32:07Speaker 2: we've mentioned the defense, but he does a lot of
- 32:09Speaker 2: those little things, and I think, you know, the blue
- 32:11Speaker 2: guy thing is a perfect assessment of what he needs
- 32:14Speaker 2: to be for this team. I know you took some
- 32:16Speaker 2: notes that when you watch some of these games. Anything
- 32:19Speaker 2: else you had written down, or anything else, anything else
- 32:21Speaker 2: that stood out that you wanted to talk about before
- 32:24Speaker 2: we wrap up here.
- 32:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll share with your listeners. They might have heard
- 32:29Speaker 4: us talk about this at different points of one of
- 32:32Speaker 4: the post game shows, but I'll put it in in
- 32:34Speaker 4: four pieces here. The willingness to attack in offense. For Indiana,
- 32:40Speaker 4: they were in attack mode, and I think that comes
- 32:41Speaker 4: from coach Devrees again, whether it be transition driving to basketball,
- 32:47Speaker 4: you know, driving closeouts off the pick and roll, or
- 32:49Speaker 4: just shooting an open three early in the game. They
- 32:52Speaker 4: are an attack team, which is fun to watch, right,
- 32:55Speaker 4: Maybe not so fun if you're shooting twenty two percent
- 32:58Speaker 4: and you're down twelve or something. There'll be nights maybe
- 33:00Speaker 4: where that doesn't work out, But it's much more fun
- 33:02Speaker 4: to be in attack mode as opposed to be in
- 33:05Speaker 4: passive and running too much stuff like coach DeVries runs
- 33:09Speaker 4: a lot of good stuff. But even in that they attack.
- 33:13Speaker 4: I thought, again, with that is pace and depth, the
- 33:16Speaker 4: ability to not just transition for pace, but how you
- 33:21Speaker 4: hard you play on the offensive end and the defensive end.
- 33:23Speaker 4: I thought they played at a really good pace of basketball.
- 33:26Speaker 4: Their cuts were hard, their screens were physical, and they
- 33:30Speaker 4: didn't have to be in that league. And so again,
- 33:33Speaker 4: how does that play in the regular season, Alex I
- 33:35Speaker 4: don't know yet because the competition, and but it's going
- 33:39Speaker 4: to be better than last year. That they play with confidence.
- 33:44Speaker 4: And here's here's your freshman Carvila having thirty two points,
- 33:47Speaker 4: Manhurst having seventeen in one game. The ability to catch
- 33:51Speaker 4: and shoot without thinking for young people. That speaks to
- 33:54Speaker 4: me to coach DeVries saying, when you're open, you're gonna
- 33:56Speaker 4: shoot the basketball. You're here for a reason. You guys
- 33:59Speaker 4: have demonstrated a bild. They don't hesitate to shoot. And
- 34:02Speaker 4: I worked for a guy in high school my last
- 34:04Speaker 4: five years, former assistant of mine, Mike Lewis at Western,
- 34:07Speaker 4: and he said early in the year he wanted everyone
- 34:09Speaker 4: to shoot, and I was like, oh man, this kid's
- 34:11Speaker 4: not as good as this kid. Maybe we need to
- 34:13Speaker 4: make sure we know about shot selections. No, I want
- 34:15Speaker 4: everyone shooting early because you never know, and that ball
- 34:19Speaker 4: finds them at a clutch moment and they feel comfortable
- 34:21Speaker 4: and confident because you gave him the confidence early. So
- 34:24Speaker 4: in practice, earlier, maybe in early games. I loved the
- 34:28Speaker 4: freshman confidence. I loved Darren Harris's confidence in pulling the three,
- 34:32Speaker 4: and what I saw last year, even in the eighteen
- 34:34Speaker 4: and fourteen year with people were not afraid to take
- 34:36Speaker 4: shots and again not to go back on previous regimes,
- 34:40Speaker 4: but that wasn't always the case. You know, we're not
- 34:43Speaker 4: here to get shooters shots. Well, he wants everyone shooting
- 34:46Speaker 4: the basketball. And the last thing is accountability. I thought
- 34:49Speaker 4: there's some great timeouts. I thought in the full game
- 34:52Speaker 4: that I watched, they weren't guarding very well. Calls the
- 34:54Speaker 4: timeout and they come out and just go on a
- 34:56Speaker 4: twelve zero run. Anything he puts a press on. I think,
- 35:02Speaker 4: you know he's talking on the sidelines. I like that.
- 35:05Speaker 4: I think now with the depth piece too, you can
- 35:07Speaker 4: hold players accountable. If they're not practicing hard, not playing hard.
- 35:10Speaker 4: You can put someone in and be constructive in your criticism.
- 35:15Speaker 4: I think that's good. Those are the four key things
- 35:17Speaker 4: that I wrote down about the Peru. The willingness to attack,
- 35:20Speaker 4: pace to play with, the depth, confidence of the team
- 35:23Speaker 4: to make plays, and then the accountability when they're not
- 35:25Speaker 4: playing well. Those things you can tell in a week
- 35:29Speaker 4: where you go and play against someone that's not at
- 35:31Speaker 4: your level. You can kind of tell those things by
- 35:34Speaker 4: how the whole situation. And so we're in a better
- 35:37Speaker 4: place Indiana basketball. Indiana basketball is in a better place.
- 35:42Speaker 4: Just how much better we'll tell when we play the Kentucky's,
- 35:46Speaker 4: the Arkansass and those teams and then get into the
- 35:48Speaker 4: Big Ten. But I think we have a good chance
- 35:50Speaker 4: to be very, very very competitive with what I read
- 35:53Speaker 4: and what I see.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Absolutely thanks for your thoughts on that last thing before
- 35:58Speaker 2: we let you go. IU football starts fall camp next week.
- 36:02Speaker 3: I know you're a big.
- 36:02Speaker 5: IU football guy.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Just what what's it going to be like getting down
- 36:06Speaker 2: there this year to some games to watch the defending
- 36:11Speaker 2: national champ I mean, it's it's it's the real Every
- 36:14Speaker 2: every time I think about it, talk about it. I
- 36:17Speaker 2: mean I would have never thought that, you know, we
- 36:18Speaker 2: would be providing IU football coverage and inside the Hall
- 36:21Speaker 2: because you know, we were a basketball only site for
- 36:23Speaker 2: so long. But you know, last year, Josh pos did
- 36:26Speaker 2: a great job with his coverage for the first year,
- 36:28Speaker 2: and we can we decided to continue it on obviously
- 36:31Speaker 2: with two students now covering the program this upcoming season,
- 36:35Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch.
- 36:36Speaker 2: But you know, you've been there through the you know,
- 36:43Speaker 2: the the banter from a lot of the the people
- 36:47Speaker 2: on Twitter is, well, how you football that these fans
- 36:49Speaker 2: just showed up. Now you've you were there for some
- 36:52Speaker 2: of the the uh down in the dumps moments, So
- 36:55Speaker 2: now you're gonna get to enjoy going showing up for
- 36:59Speaker 2: the defending national well CHAMPCE. What's that gonna be like
- 37:01Speaker 2: down there to Bloomington Now on game day.
- 37:03Speaker 3: It's gonna be simply awesome. You know.
- 37:06Speaker 4: So I went to school when Mallory started his run,
- 37:09Speaker 4: and then early after I graduated, he was very successful.
- 37:12Speaker 4: So that's how I got into it, and then it's
- 37:13Speaker 4: just been a struggle. But you know, when you turn
- 37:16Speaker 4: on you know, college Football Today on ESPN and they
- 37:20Speaker 4: lead with talking about the Indiana Hoosiers at media day,
- 37:23Speaker 4: it's just surreal. You know, twenty seven and two and
- 37:28Speaker 4: you lose at Ohio State and at an Ordre Dame
- 37:30Speaker 4: and those two played for the championship. You kind of
- 37:34Speaker 4: pinch yourself a little bit. And I go back and
- 37:37Speaker 4: watch the Rose Bowl game and all you know, the
- 37:40Speaker 4: Peach Bowl, those things over and over again.
- 37:43Speaker 3: But it's gonna be great.
- 37:45Speaker 4: I think the expectations are that this team might be
- 37:47Speaker 4: even a little bit better. So I don't know how
- 37:49Speaker 4: that happens, and we'll see. You know, We've talked a
- 37:53Speaker 4: little bit in our family too. It's like if we
- 37:55Speaker 4: go ten and two, are we going to be disappointed?
- 37:57Speaker 1: Now?
- 37:57Speaker 4: Where Holy cal that would have been ten ten years ago,
- 38:00Speaker 4: seven and five would have been a celebration because we're
- 38:03Speaker 4: going to Detroit for for a bowl game.
- 38:06Speaker 3: It is great, it is it is.
- 38:08Speaker 4: It's just awesome to have Indiana football and coach Signetti
- 38:12Speaker 4: just an incredible I don't think there's any story in
- 38:14Speaker 4: my lifetime. You know, I know Texas Western one in
- 38:18Speaker 4: sixty six. You know, Loyola won some basketball games. Milin
- 38:24Speaker 4: I think is a good story. But we were bad.
- 38:28Speaker 4: We were very bad at football, and then we were
- 38:31Speaker 4: just like average for a while, and then we were
- 38:34Speaker 4: bad and then sixteen and oh and beating Alabama.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Oregon in Miami, and I think they went to like
- 38:42Speaker 2: the Insight Bowl or something and being excited to watch
- 38:45Speaker 2: that game on TV. And I'm like thinking back to that,
- 38:48Speaker 2: It's like why did I now those bowl games are
- 38:51Speaker 2: like with the playoff and everything is like completely irrelevant.
- 38:54Speaker 2: But it's like that's kind of where Indiana football was
- 38:56Speaker 2: for so long that go into something like that was
- 38:58Speaker 2: a big deal. And you know even bowl game was
- 39:00Speaker 2: it was it the Pinstripe Bowl where they want to do, Yeah,
- 39:05Speaker 2: that that game. The other thing I'll say is and
- 39:07Speaker 2: I don't cover the team on a day day basis.
- 39:09Speaker 2: You know, I do a little bit of football stuff
- 39:11Speaker 2: to try to help out with the students, writing and
- 39:14Speaker 2: a lot of stuff. But Signetti, his press conferences are
- 39:18Speaker 2: just like the gift that keeps giving for the media
- 39:20Speaker 2: because he just every time he talks and every dig
- 39:24Speaker 2: that he takes at the s He like the thing
- 39:26Speaker 2: he said this week at Big Tim Media Day about
- 39:28Speaker 2: the whining and complaining, I was like, those people are
- 39:31Speaker 2: losing their mind. And he's just rent free and everybody's
- 39:34Speaker 2: head down there out because they can't stand the fact
- 39:36Speaker 2: that Indiana is good now. Not only that that he
- 39:40Speaker 2: basically said all these crazy things when he came in,
- 39:43Speaker 2: and I think we probably both would admit you probably
- 39:46Speaker 2: thought he was crazy when he came in and said
- 39:47Speaker 2: these things.
- 39:48Speaker 5: He's backed the ball up and now he.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Can sit there and gloat and you know, enjoy the
- 39:52Speaker 2: moment and there's nothing these people can say about it.
- 39:55Speaker 2: And I love that about it because that to me
- 39:56Speaker 2: is just it's just entertaining. And all these people that
- 40:01Speaker 2: have obviously I'm happy for IU fans that have followed
- 40:04Speaker 2: this program for salt. They deserve it, you know, as
- 40:07Speaker 2: much as everybody wants to say, where were all these people?
- 40:10Speaker 2: Think about the history of any sports program, sports team.
- 40:15Speaker 2: I mean, people don't they want a cheerful winner. Does
- 40:20Speaker 2: it mean that people didn't love the team or want
- 40:21Speaker 2: to follow the team. But if you're beaten up for
- 40:24Speaker 2: that long, it's hard to show up for games when
- 40:26Speaker 2: you know it's three and nine or whatever. Of course
- 40:28Speaker 2: they're going to be more engaged now and be more
- 40:30Speaker 2: excited about it. And you know, in many ways, he's, uh,
- 40:35Speaker 2: he's woken up a sleeping giant and now IU, I
- 40:37Speaker 2: think it's just helped the overall university. I'm sure there's
- 40:41Speaker 2: more students that want to come to you now. It's
- 40:43Speaker 2: gonna help the other sports, I'm sure with the different
- 40:46Speaker 2: things you can do from a revenue sharing and nil
- 40:48Speaker 2: opportunities for other sports. So I think overall for IU,
- 40:51Speaker 2: for Bloomington, for the state, it's been an excellent thing.
- 40:54Speaker 2: So but Signetty, I mean, he's he's a unicorn man.
- 40:57Speaker 2: There's no one like him.
- 40:59Speaker 4: It's gonna be awesome. You know, you always wanted the atmosphere,
- 41:01Speaker 4: the college football atmosphere, and it was great coming for
- 41:04Speaker 4: what twenty five thirty years since I graduated, But now
- 41:08Speaker 4: it's really an atmosphere. It's packed, and you know, it's
- 41:12Speaker 4: hard to get in and out of the stadium and
- 41:14Speaker 4: all that, and that's just part of the price you
- 41:16Speaker 4: go to any you go to any big school now
- 41:18Speaker 4: and and we are that big school, and so the
- 41:20Speaker 4: environment's going to be good. Seeing a packed Memorial Stadium
- 41:24Speaker 4: has been awesome that you know, I think Jeremy Gray
- 41:27Speaker 4: and anyone associated with the you know, the new mascot
- 41:30Speaker 4: and the tiles rally tiles, like we just went from
- 41:35Speaker 4: not much to the very top of atmosphere and winning,
- 41:38Speaker 4: and and it makes Saturdays very very enjoyable, a little pricey,
- 41:42Speaker 4: a little more pricey, but a lot more enjoyable.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Absolutely well, coach, thanks for taking the time. You have
- 41:50Speaker 2: a little bit more time now, so maybe I can
- 41:51Speaker 2: ask you to come a little whenever you want, as
- 41:55Speaker 2: long as I get you off the golf course. But
- 41:56Speaker 2: thanks again for coming on, sharing your thoughts, exit for listening.
- 42:00Speaker 2: I know we've been a little bit on maybe an
- 42:03Speaker 2: uneven schedule this summer, not as much to talk about
- 42:05Speaker 2: obviously in those summer months, we'll hopefully try to get
- 42:07Speaker 2: into a more regular schedule. As the fall semester starts,
- 42:11Speaker 2: we get into some of the football schedule and obviously
- 42:15Speaker 2: the basketball schedule. These exhibition games are gonna be starting
- 42:17Speaker 2: earlier and ever, I think India's first exhibition is October eleventh,
- 42:20Speaker 2: so we'll have basketball here before you know it. We'll
- 42:23Speaker 2: have everything covered obviously over on Inside the Hall, here
- 42:26Speaker 2: on podcasts on the Brink. So thanks everybody as always
- 42:28Speaker 2: for listening.
- 42:29Speaker 5: One more time.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Want to remind you, if you enjoy the show, please
- 42:31Speaker 2: leave us a rating and review. Over on Apple Podcasts
- 42:33Speaker 2: at Spotify. If you're watching on YouTube, like the video,
- 42:37Speaker 2: subscribe to the channel, share the video with another IU
- 42:39Speaker 2: fan or Big ten fan who might enjoy the content,
- 42:42Speaker 2: and we'll be back soon with another episode of podcast
- 42:45Speaker 2: on the Brink.
