Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. Hello, I'm Michael Etheridge AKA
- 0:29Coach Mike. And I'm Cheryl Etheridge.
- 0:31And we are. Golden Elite.
- 0:34Out of Pensacola, FL. And today we are going to be
- 0:38talking about more than track building, discipline, identity
- 0:44and future leaders through sports.
- 0:47Now, as we all know, track and field I consider to be a
- 0:51individualized team sport and I know as you as coaches, y'all
- 0:55know what I'm talking about. You have an athlete they run the
- 0:58one and the two and the four, but yet and still they're part
- 1:01of a program that unifies everybody together as a team.
- 1:05But the accomplishments from what they do on the track comes
- 1:09from individuality. A lot of times we find ourselves
- 1:14focusing on the opportunities for athletes to excel on the
- 1:19track and you know, we forget about excelling them off the
- 1:23track. And so, you know, that's to me
- 1:27Dublin importance. That's the thing.
- 1:28We have a slogan here at Golden Elite where we say we're more
- 1:32than just a track club. And it is essential that
- 1:36everyone that participates in our program, as far as whether
- 1:40you're the person checking kids in at practice at the gate, or
- 1:44you're the coach or you're the therapist or the the team
- 1:47doctor, you understand that. That's that's good and correct,
- 1:53Coach Mike. I think a lot of people that
- 1:57have sports program miss the opportunity for the community to
- 2:03know that you're there to do more than just train their child
- 2:08in whatever sport they are participating in.
- 2:11You're actually there to shape their mindset structure, you
- 2:16know, the course in their lives and help them, you know, really
- 2:20gain their identity. So one of the things that we do
- 2:24at Golden Elite is we have a slogan that really isn't a
- 2:29slogan. Academics over athletics because
- 2:34real life happens and you have to have more than just athletic
- 2:39abilities to fall back on once you have, you know, graduated
- 2:44high school and or college. And that takes place at at the
- 2:52beginning of practice. That's something we can
- 2:54establish in the track and field or as an organization.
- 2:58Not just us, anybody. You know, once success comes to
- 3:02that athlete, it has to be established from the ground up.
- 3:06One thing we make sure that we do is we treat everybody the
- 3:09same. You know, we have young people
- 3:12that come through our program, parents are millionaires.
- 3:16They making, you know, they got $1,000,000 a year, they bring it
- 3:18into the household. And then we have those parents
- 3:21that kids are bringing $30,000 a year into the household.
- 3:26But when it comes to individuality, that doesn't
- 3:30exist as a person. When it comes to our
- 3:33organization, everybody's treated the same.
- 3:35We're going to get phone calls. We we make phone calls to these
- 3:39kids how the grades are going and how you're acting at home.
- 3:42There are two things we teach our athletes when they join our
- 3:45program that they have to take care of #1 is home and #2 is
- 3:49school. We teach our athletes,
- 3:51regardless of how great you are, how great you not are, you got
- 3:55to take care of home and you got to take care of school.
- 3:59Once again, we got athletes that have parents that are lawyers
- 4:02and judges and doctors. And in that same setting, we
- 4:06have kids that have never seen their parents and they still,
- 4:09they stay with their grandparents.
- 4:11And you know, and so, but yet and still the, the, the surface,
- 4:15everybody's the same when it comes to respect, character
- 4:19integrity, You know, as coaches, if you want to get a part of a
- 4:23program to where you just want to deal with superstars and All
- 4:26Stars and Golden Elite wouldn't be that program for you.
- 4:30We're here to make sure that we teach, instruct God, educate,
- 4:35encourage and equip these young kids for what's coming next.
- 4:39Regardless if they're six or they're 16, they have something
- 4:42next coming in their life. And so, you know, we do
- 4:44constructional things here in our program.
- 4:48My wife can tell you a whole bunch of things that we do.
- 4:51Yeah. So we're we're not the typical
- 4:53sports program. Of course we teach nutrition.
- 4:58But with that we don't just teach the athlete, we teach the
- 5:02entire family. If we are learning how to make
- 5:05smoothies, the families are going to be involved at practice
- 5:09making smoothies because let's be real, the parents are the
- 5:14ones that are going to the grocery store paying for the
- 5:16food. So if you can start implementing
- 5:19through the whole, you know, household that you know, helps
- 5:23the whole entire family with their, you know, health journeys
- 5:26to make sure they're doing what they need.
- 5:28We have tutoring services for our athletes because we monitor
- 5:35our athletes grades every couple of weeks.
- 5:38We make sure like they're not getting referrals and if we see
- 5:42that their grades are slipping, we immediately get with that.
- 5:45Parents set up the tutoring and tell them like they're going to
- 5:50focus on their grades. They can come to practice, but
- 5:53if they do, they're going to be doing some type of class work
- 5:57because that is what is most important.
- 6:01We do speakers that will come in just so kids can see from mental
- 6:07health to how to budget, certain banks coming in talking about,
- 6:13you know, saving money. And we also make sure the whole
- 6:17family is involved with that and just giving them real life life
- 6:22skills. So you know, in a nutshell, if
- 6:27the program is not adhering to the athlete as a whole person,
- 6:33because eventually track and field is going to end, football
- 6:37is going to end, basketball it's going to end regardless if they
- 6:40play for the Lakers or they plan for the pickup team as they
- 6:44don't track football. All the sports eventually we're
- 6:48in. And what do you have after that?
- 6:50You know, a lot of times I know we all can look back on some TV
- 6:55story or some type of news report where this multi
- 6:59$1,000,000 athlete now is homeless and on drugs and in
- 7:03trouble. Da, da, da, da, da.
- 7:05It's because through, I believe through the process of coming
- 7:08up, the talent outweigh the opportunities to become a better
- 7:14person, not a better athlete. You know, hey, you're number one
- 7:18in the county and you're going to help our team go to state
- 7:20and, you know, so yeah, we're going to pass you on these
- 7:22grades and you got in trouble, but we're going to push that
- 7:26under the rug kind of thing. No, no, we have to be honest
- 7:29with these kids and care about them as a person moving forward
- 7:34in society so that they're having.
- 7:37And so, you know, off the track when it comes to what we do is
- 7:42more important and just as important as what happens on the
- 7:45track. We teach our kids.
- 7:47You don't become a champion at a track meet before you get to
- 7:50that track me and you lined up to do what you're going to do
- 7:53rather's jump run a throw. You already have established
- 7:56your championship abilities throughout the week or the month
- 8:00of whatever prior to that. That's just everything coming
- 8:03together at that time. That includes how you think, how
- 8:07you react to situations, you know, and so when that
- 8:10opportunity presents itself to take full advantage of it.
- 8:14So if if you're a parent and you listening to this and your child
- 8:17is exceptional in a sport, regardless if it's track or any
- 8:21other sport get, you know, you got to be part of this too.
- 8:25You got to be a very intricate part of the success that your
- 8:29child will bring. You know, we have a great
- 8:32relationship with Olympian Justin Gatlin and his parents.
- 8:35And, you know, in the process of us getting together and talking
- 8:38with kids in the community, we also let parents know that, you
- 8:42know, from the aspect of his parents, they tell them how
- 8:46tough it was in the sacrifice that had to be made in order for
- 8:49an individual like him to get to where he was and to accomplish
- 8:54what he did. And in that.
- 8:55And that's all work. And in our program, you know,
- 9:00like Coach Mike is saying off of the, you know, field, we have
- 9:04numerous stories that we can tell you of children that came
- 9:08through our program, where they started and like where they are
- 9:12now. Coach Mike, would you want to
- 9:14tell them about the young athlete that couldn't make it
- 9:18around the track? Well, just for name purposes,
- 9:23because we hadn't talked to his parents and got the permission.
- 9:26So I'm going to just say TT, You know, TT came out and they
- 9:31wanted to find something for TT to do, just to have some type of
- 9:36physical activity, just be part of something constructive.
- 9:38And they had heard about Golden Elite, our program, and people
- 9:42were raving about, oh, it's a great environment, is safe, so
- 9:46forth and so on. So they brought TT out and you
- 9:50know, TT really didn't come out to be part of the track team.
- 9:54His brother did. But TT came out and say, I want
- 9:57to go out there too. So the parents were really
- 9:59literally, and they were literally because of the fact
- 10:02that when TT was born, he had a heart condition that doctors
- 10:06told him that he would never be able to get into any type of
- 10:10strong physical activities through his life because it
- 10:13would put him in a position to where his heart would fail.
- 10:18And so TT started coming out and when he first came out, he
- 10:21couldn't even do a 110. He couldn't get a quarter around
- 10:25the track. And you know, we knew about it a
- 10:28little bit and we just like any other person that comes out,
- 10:31hey, if you got to walk, walk. It's your first day out here so
- 10:34far, but week after week after week after week and we did not
- 10:38know the intensity of what the situation was at that time.
- 10:42And so week after week and all of a sudden TT is making two
- 10:46laps and going through the entire practice and had his
- 10:50first ever track me come up. We were in.
- 10:52I never forget as we were in Mobile, AL and the parents was
- 10:56seeing their child come down to the track and came across the
- 11:00front of the line. TT was in lead last place, dead
- 11:03last. Dead last.
- 11:06I'm talking about last. I mean one, no doubt about it,
- 11:08one close. And his parents were just crying
- 11:11and you know, you would have thought of them like everything
- 11:14all right. They say Coach Mike, you don't
- 11:16understand. And it they went into the
- 11:18situation of the story about the doctors, told them that his
- 11:22heart was going to fail if he never made it.
- 11:25And they took him back to the doctor after that, tried me a
- 11:28couple of weeks and they looked at it and the doctor told him
- 11:30whatever they were doing with him at the time with TT, keep
- 11:35doing it. And they came back and gave a
- 11:36testimony. So again, TT was treated like
- 11:39every other athlete that was treated in our program.
- 11:42We didn't look at TT to say, hey, you ain't going to be that
- 11:44good, go sit down. It was week after week,
- 11:47encouragement after encouragement to get TT to
- 11:50understand there's something in you.
- 11:52We want you to start and finish, That's it.
- 11:54And you have done something great.
- 11:56So again, our program is not built around we have superstars.
- 12:00We've been on Good Morning America and we have national,
- 12:04you know, Jo, medalist, gold medalist and athlete that signed
- 12:09with Nike. We have done all that and it's
- 12:11great. Don't get me wrong, it is
- 12:13exceptional. But that kid that comes out and
- 12:16the parents say there's no hope for him.
- 12:18And they say what we heard about your program when we just wanted
- 12:21to see if we could bring him here or bring her here.
- 12:26And then two or three months later, those grades are up.
- 12:29That attitude is better than not cussing mom and dad out at home.
- 12:34They're waking up in the mornings on their own, doing
- 12:36exercises. They're trying to eat better and
- 12:39implanting something in that child's life to make them a
- 12:42better person. And I would just kind of leave
- 12:45with coaches if you know you have that passion and we know
- 12:50it's not easy and you have to have a good team behind you, but
- 12:55go into the mindset that you're building a youth development
- 13:00organization, not a track club. So I think when we can have
- 13:05coaches and parents shift their mindset to that, a lot more
- 13:10programs will be successful. So again, I'm Cheryl Etheridge,
- 13:17if you want to learn more about Golden Elite track and field,
