Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back, Shalom. I'm glad to have you here as
- 0:02part of the scripture central team for 1st and 2nd
- 0:05Thessalonians. These possibly are the oldest
- 0:09books written in the entire New Testament.
- 0:11Some people think Galatians might precede it, but most
- 0:14scholars think 1st and Thessalonians were the first
- 0:16text written and the Gospels were being compiled and in
- 0:20different forms but not in the form we know them.
- 0:22Those came a little bit later, but because they're shorter
- 0:25letters, they are placed all the way down here in the Pauline
- 0:31corpus that they have wonderful themes.
- 0:33He focuses on rejoicing in the Saints faithfulness and
- 0:37encouragement for their progress.
- 0:39He encourages them to grow in charity and hope and
- 0:42faithfulness. They're just terrific books.
- 0:44Remember, he visited them on his second mission.
- 0:47This is part of the northern Greece area where he wanted to
- 0:50go to Emphasis and he was prayed over to Macedonia.
- 0:54So he goes over there and he visits them and he's only there
- 0:56just a few weeks before persecution comes and chases him
- 1:00out. And it's even on that same
- 1:02mission that he's writing these letters it.
- 1:04It's just a little bit later when he's in other towns, he
- 1:08describes being in Athens, and at least that's what the 4th
- 1:11century person wrote down. He may have been over in
- 1:14Corinth, which is where I probably think he was writing
- 1:16them from, because he stayed in Corinth for 18 months after
- 1:20Thessalaika. So that's probably where he's
- 1:23writing those from. You know, we use the first
- 1:25Thessalonians as one of the books to say this is Pauline.
- 1:29And then we attribute all the others that share the same
- 1:32themes and the same phrases. And these are the books that are
- 1:36attested to be written by Paul, First Thessalonians, First
- 1:40Corinthians, Second Corinthians, Galatians, Romans, Philippians
- 1:44and Feylemen. The others probably were
- 1:47included some editing by a scribe or Paul wrote an outline
- 1:51or something. I don't know.
- 1:52We are, we are not quite sure, but we're not positive that
- 1:55they're completely written by Paul.
- 1:57It was on Paul's second mission that he he left the area that we
- 2:01refer to now as Turkey. He's up in Troy, US, which is
- 2:04the city of Troy. And he had stayed there and had
- 2:07the vision that he was coming over and and then had left
- 2:10northern Macedonian and come to southern Macedonian.
- 2:12And then he wrote the letters from down there.
- 2:15Let's talk a little bit about Thessalonica and what it was.
- 2:18This capital area was a free city.
- 2:21That means they didn't have to pay taxes.
- 2:23That is huge. They are still under the same
- 2:25umbrella of Rome, but they are taxfree.
- 2:29The population was between 60 and 100,000, an enormous city
- 2:32for those days and age. And there were also many Jews
- 2:35there, because they found both Jewish and Samaritan synagogues
- 2:39in the archaeological digs. There was a Roman form, a
- 2:43Hellenistic stadium. There's a Temple of Surrapus
- 2:47there. Another way we can date the
- 2:49letter is because Paul is writing the letter with Silas,
- 2:52it's called Sylvanius and timothaneus.
- 2:54You know, they're using the Greek names, the longer endings.
- 2:57But in the book of Acts, this is with Silas, and Silas was with
- 3:00Paul only on his second mission. That's how we can date this to
- 3:03that time period. One more little detail about
- 3:06Thessalonica. Because it was this very wealthy
- 3:08city, archaeologists have found coins from all different
- 3:12countries there. They found coins with Zeus and
- 3:14Hera on them. They found coins from many,
- 3:17many, many other countries. And in fact, the city enjoyed
- 3:19such extensive wealth that they built temples to a lot of
- 3:24different people here. And Paul, when he comes, adds
- 3:27one more religion to this city and that's Christianity.
- 3:31As you recall, between the first mission and the second mission,
- 3:34Paul went back to Jerusalem and said, what are we going to have
- 3:37the Christians that are being converted without circumcision?
- 3:41What are we going to have them do?
- 3:43How much of the Law of Moses are they expected to live?
- 3:46So they have that Jerusalem council in about 5051 AD and
- 3:49Acts chapter 15 describes it. And that is now the message that
- 3:54Paul took to them when he was on that second mission.
- 3:57Just to refresh our memories of that second mission that Paul
- 4:00was on, I'm going to read a little bit from Acts chapter 17,
- 4:04verses one through 3, talking about the synagogues of the
- 4:06Jews, that he'd go into the synagogues to preach.
- 4:08And he says that he reasoned with them out of the Scriptures.
- 4:12And then skipping down to verse three, that Christ suffered and
- 4:15was risen. He goes on to say of the chief
- 4:18women there was not a few. You know there were many many
- 4:20women that came flocking to Christianity and it was a
- 4:24wonderful experience. Even though Paul wasn't there
- 4:27very long, the spirit of the Lord was poured out and the
- 4:30message was clearly communicated that Jesus was the Savior of the
- 4:33world. The 1st letter of Thessalonians
- 4:35is divided into two parts. There's only 5 short chapters
- 4:39and the first part is all on rejoicing in the Saints
- 4:41faithfulness and then the second part is on the encouragement for
- 4:46the Saints progress. So at the very beginning he this
- 4:50rejoicing section he gives them their greetings of peace and
- 4:54thanks see then and chapter 2 talks about his ministry there
- 4:58with them and hit their reception and the opposition
- 5:01that came around from his message.
- 5:04Then in chapter 2, verse 17 to 20 his desire to visit them, and
- 5:09then in chapter 3 his is news from Timothy that Timothy had
- 5:13been sent and visited them and gave them encouraging reports.
- 5:17And then the second-half is this encouragement chapter four and
- 5:19five, where he encouraged them to live and to please God and to
- 5:24seek sanctification and charity. In chapter 4 verses 3 through 8
- 5:29he attacks sexual immorality and then from 9:00 to 12:00 he
- 5:34builds up charity and self-sufficiency.
- 5:38And chapter 4, verse 13 to 18, he talks about that the dead
- 5:42Saints are going to come back and they're going to be with
- 5:46Christ when he returns. And then the last chapter,
- 5:49chapter 5, the 1st 11 verses talk about the timing of the
- 5:52second coming and then the relationship with each other.
- 5:56And verse 16 to 22, the relationship with God.
- 5:59And then the last five verses, 23 to 28, Paul's final blessing
- 6:04and prayer. I love verse one.
- 6:08When Paul again claims servitude, he is a servant of
- 6:10Christ. I can't say enough about our
- 6:13responsibility as disciples of Christ as baptized members to
- 6:17serve him. We need to go before him every
- 6:19morning and evening on our prayers and say, I'm here to
- 6:22listen, I'm here to learn, I'm here to serve you.
- 6:25What can I do? And it isn't slothful servant
- 6:28who has to be commanded in all things, you know.
- 6:30There is much we can do to bring about righteousness, however.
- 6:35Paul as an apostle identifies himself not here as an apostle,
- 6:40but as a servant. And I love it.
- 6:42Later on he'll identify himself an apostle in a few verses.
- 6:45But chapter one, verse one has a nice Joe Smith edition.
- 6:48He says Paul and Sibelius and Timotheus, you know those are
- 6:51their Greek names. And then here is the Joe Smith
- 6:54edition, servants of God the Father and of the Lord Jesus
- 6:59Christ unto the Church of the Thessalonians.
- 7:04And then skipping down to verse four in the NIV, it reads, for
- 7:07we know, brothers and sisters, and that's obviously using that
- 7:12word, Delfoy for all believers. You know it's 14 times in these
- 7:16letters, but it's always for disciples, regardless of the age
- 7:21and the gender, continues on those who are loved by God that
- 7:25he has chosen you. The idea of being chosen by God
- 7:29in the King James is using the word elect.
- 7:32You are of the elector, you are of the election.
- 7:34We find it seven times in the New Testament.
- 7:37And the word means to choose out.
- 7:40It's either a divine selection or a general choosing.
- 7:43But it's interpreted by many Christians to say, oh, we don't
- 7:48have any agency. We're either damned or saved and
- 7:50it's all up to God and it we trust that he knows best.
- 7:54But we define this very differently, and luckily we have
- 7:58in the Restoration clear statements against all the
- 8:01points that were brought about by this Calvinistic or early
- 8:05Christian thought that they were some damned and and some saved
- 8:09without any choice on their own. And as you recall, I've talked
- 8:12about this in the past it this type of Reformed theology is
- 8:16called the Tulip, total depravity, unconditional
- 8:20election, limited atonement, irresistible grace and
- 8:23perseverance of the Saints. Every single one of those were
- 8:27knocked down by Joseph Smith in the First Vision.
- 8:29So this word is defined very differently by other people.
- 8:33When we say your beloved of God, we think, yes, I'm so grateful,
- 8:37but he loves all of his children, you know, but we
- 8:40choose to be chosen if we are following according to Section
- 8:43122, Why are they not chosen? Because they care too much about
- 8:47the things of the world. Are you more worried about your
- 8:51physical appearance, or are you more worried about your internal
- 8:54condition of your heart? Section 29 uses this word,
- 8:57elected very early in the Church, he says in verse 9.
- 9:02The elect hear my voice and harden, not their hearts.
- 9:06That's the definition of the elect in the Restoration.
- 9:10So let's take that word back now into the Pauline epistle at
- 9:13first Thessalonians and say yes, they are those who have
- 9:17hardened, not their hearts. Continuing on to verse 5.
- 9:20This is also in the NIV. Our gospel came to you not
- 9:24simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and
- 9:28deep conviction. I love the fact that the Spirit
- 9:32was tied to power. The Spirit can be a very
- 9:35powerful thing. And so I thought it would be
- 9:38interesting to look up how many times power is connected with
- 9:41the Spirit in the scriptures and in the Bible.
- 9:44I found it 10 times. Then I thought, I might as well
- 9:47keep looking. And in the Book of Mormon it is
- 9:5157 times. Since the Book of Mormon is only
- 9:54a third the size of the Bible, you have to do the word ratios.
- 9:57And if you do the the statistics, it turns out to be
- 9:5917 times more often. Is the Spirit linked to power
- 10:04within a verse or a few phrases? And then in the doctrine
- 10:07cabinets it's even more than that.
- 10:08When you do the word ratios, it's only 35 times.
- 10:11But because it's such a small book, it's actually 26 times
- 10:15greater than the Bible. So in the Restoration, this
- 10:19spirit is a powerful message, and the Lord wants us to link it
- 10:23that way. First six, the First
- 10:26Thessalonians chapter One. Ye become followers of us out of
- 10:30the Lord, having received the Word in affliction with joy of
- 10:35the Holy Ghost. You know Christianity was
- 10:38nothing for cowardly converts. This was a place for those who
- 10:42are willing to fight for what they believed, those people who
- 10:46want to sit back. This is not a place, especially
- 10:49at this time when there was so much persecution, and I feel the
- 10:51same thing for our day and age too.
- 10:54Our religious persecution though, I think is a lot more
- 10:56intellectual or emotional rather than physical.
- 10:59And theirs was physical, especially under, you know, in a
- 11:02few years after this letter is written, when Nero's on the
- 11:04throne, continuing on to chapter 2, verse two, he now goes back
- 11:08to remind them of what it was like when he was first there.
- 11:11For those few weeks, there was a lot of animosity and there was a
- 11:14lot of persecution in the early church in this area.
- 11:18And I don't know if you remember, but in Acts chapter
- 11:1917, they described Jason, this good Christian who was
- 11:22imprisoned, and other church leaders as well.
- 11:25But let's read chapter 2, verse two.
- 11:27In the NIV, with the help of our God, we dared to tell you His
- 11:32gospel in the face of strong opposition.
- 11:35So even with the enemy barking at the door, he opened his mouth
- 11:40and shared his love of our Savior.
- 11:42Skipping up to verse 11 and 12 still in the MIV, it reads, you
- 11:46know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his
- 11:50own children encouraging and comforting and urging you to
- 11:53live lives worthy of God. And that's the beauty of the
- 11:58gospel. Those we serve, we grow to love.
- 12:01We feel like we're missionaries, are our children, are my primary
- 12:05kids, are my children, and we learn to love each other.
- 12:08And it's a gift of the Spirit. It's a gift from God.
- 12:13Continuing on to verse 14 in the NIV, it says you brothers and
- 12:17sisters become imitators of God, churches and Judea, which are in
- 12:21Jesus Christ because you suffered from your own people
- 12:25the same things that the churches suffered from the Jews.
- 12:29So he's saying in Jerusalem the early Christians are suffering,
- 12:33and even here in Thessalomica you guys are also suffering and
- 12:36you are being physically persecuted.
- 12:39In fact, about 50 AD and Acts chapter 17, other people were
- 12:43envious. So again, pride gets in the
- 12:46road. So Paul apologizes for not being
- 12:49able to stay with the Saints very long.
- 12:51In First Thessalonians chapter 2, verse 17 in the CSB, it reads
- 12:55Brothers and sisters, after we were forced to leave you for a
- 12:59short time in person, not in heart, we greatly desired and
- 13:03made every effort to return and see you face to face.
- 13:08But do you remember the Lord tells Paul you are staying in
- 13:11Corinth. I need you right here.
- 13:13You may think this is an awful Sin City, but I need you here.
- 13:16And that's when Paul sends Timothy up to see how they're
- 13:19doing and to check on them. Continuing on now in verse 19 in
- 13:23chapter 2 in the BSB, it reads, who is our hope?
- 13:27And he skips down a little bit. And he said, you yourselves in
- 13:31the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ and his coming.
- 13:34You know, initially the Christians thought that Christ
- 13:37was coming immediately. And he says, I just keep this
- 13:40vision in my mind. How do I get through these hard
- 13:43times? I think of you and I imagine you
- 13:45with our Savior. You know, earlier in in chapter
- 13:49one, he talked about that they needed to wait for Christ to
- 13:51come. The, the early Christians really
- 13:54thought this was going to happen right around the corner.
- 13:56Chapter 3, verse four, says, I kept warning you with what we
- 14:02would suffer persecution. And as you know, it has come to
- 14:06pass. That's the BSB translation.
- 14:08So he said, I warned you that it was going to be hard and I'm so
- 14:12sorry that you are being heavily persecuted.
- 14:15And we are told by our prophet now a day that it's going to get
- 14:18worse. Let me read to you from 2019
- 14:22General conference. The adversary is quadrupling his
- 14:26efforts to disrupt testimonies and impede the work of the Lord.
- 14:30He is arming his minions with potent weapons to keep us from
- 14:35partaking of the joy and love of the Lord.
- 14:38That is difficult, but there's opposition in all things, and
- 14:41the Savior will apply the greatest miracles and the
- 14:44greatest gifts, the Spirit, to combat that, Chapter 3, verse
- 14:48six and seven in the BSB reads. Just now, Timothy has returned
- 14:53from his visit with the good news about your faith, your
- 14:56love, and the fond memories that you have preserved.
- 14:58And we have been reassured. You know the days when
- 15:01communication was so difficult to get?
- 15:04He has to send someone hundreds of miles to get the message, and
- 15:08he's so grateful that the Saints are doing well.
- 15:11He continues on in verse 9 and 10 in the NIV.
- 15:13How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we
- 15:19have in the presence of our God? Because of you?
- 15:22Night and day we pray most earnestly.
- 15:26That's verse 10. I'm sure you have done the same
- 15:28thing for those whom you love, and I think it is a gift of God
- 15:32that we can pray for each other and know that angels will be
- 15:35sent. I believe in the administration
- 15:37of angels, both mortal and immortal.
- 15:41Verse 11 and 13 continues on in the NIV.
- 15:44May our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way
- 15:49for us to come to you. May the Lord make your love
- 15:53increase and overflow with each other for everyone else.
- 15:58And then verse 13. May he strengthen your heart so
- 16:01that you will be blameless and holy when our Lord Jesus comes.
- 16:07Very different view. However, Paul then turns on the
- 16:10timing, and this is what he says here in Part 2.
- 16:13Now it's the encouragement of the Saints.
- 16:16And this is what he says in chapter 4, verse one through 12.
- 16:19It's all on sanctification and love.
- 16:21I'll read verse one. Now.
- 16:24As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you
- 16:27how to live in order to please God.
- 16:30That's the NIV translation. And then in verse two, in the
- 16:32KJV it says for ye know what commandments we gave you by the
- 16:36Lord Jesus. So he's not giving them
- 16:39instructions. He is saying these came from our
- 16:42Savior. These are commandments from the
- 16:44Lord and they are for me as well As for you.
- 16:47First, Thessalonians chapter 4, verse 3 to 8.
- 16:50Next attacks immorality and this is a topic.
- 16:54Inappropriate sexual behavior is a topic in nine of his letters.
- 16:58This is a real problem in the Greco Roman world, and these are
- 17:02brand new converts and trying to completely change the paradigm
- 17:06from their culture to the culture of God is difficult.
- 17:10And so in verse three and four it reads in the MIV, it is God's
- 17:14will that you should be sanctified, that you should
- 17:17avoid sexual immorality, that each of you should learn to
- 17:20control your own body. And then in five and six he said
- 17:25not in passionate lust like the pagans who do not know God.
- 17:31And that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage
- 17:34of a brother and sister. Don't ever take advantage of
- 17:37anyone, anyone. And by brother and sister he
- 17:39means people in the in the church.
- 17:41He's not talking about incest here, I hope.
- 17:45I hope that wasn't a problem in Thessalonica, but continuing on
- 17:48to verse seven and eight again in the NIV, it reads God did not
- 17:52call us to be impure. Therefore anyone who rejects
- 17:56this instruction does not reject a human being but God.
- 18:01You know it's it's going back to he's fighting against the
- 18:03Epicureans. And I I want to emphasize that
- 18:06word rejects that in the NIV, but it's also disregards God.
- 18:11In the RSV, you know in KJV it's despises but I also like the CEV
- 18:16which is disobeys God. You know it, when we deal with
- 18:22pornography or adultery or fornication or anything in the
- 18:27whole realm of immorality, of not living a chase life, we are
- 18:32offending our God. He created our bodies for a very
- 18:36sacred purpose and when we misuse that, it is it is tragic.
- 18:42Paul next turns to charity and self sufficiently.
- 18:45So let's look at chapter 4. Verse nine is all the way down.
- 18:49Verse 12, I guess. And I'll read it from the new
- 18:51King James Version. Now concerning brotherly love,
- 18:54So that's would be Philadelphia. Remember there's all these
- 18:56different words for different kinds of love.
- 18:58Aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, to work
- 19:02with your hands that you may lack nothing.
- 19:05So see, this is the opposite of the Epicureans here.
- 19:08He's saying you know we are going to work hard and I don't
- 19:11want you being a bunch of lazy bums.
- 19:14Verse 17 in the JST add some interesting differences.
- 19:18I'll read the Joseph Smith changes.
- 19:20Then they who are alive shall be caught up together into the
- 19:26clouds with them who remain to meet the Lord in the air, and so
- 19:32shall we be ever with the Lord. Now the word that is used here
- 19:37for the caught up is the same roots that we use for the word
- 19:41rapture. And this is where that beautiful
- 19:44Christian phrase comes from, that those who are coming as a
- 19:49Christians from heaven and those from Christians on earth will
- 19:52meet together in the heavens at the coming of the Lord.
- 19:56And beautiful artwork try to describe this exciting exciting
- 20:00time. But any of us who have had
- 20:02departed loved ones look forward to this day and I look forward
- 20:06to meeting Paul. I look forward to being with all
- 20:09those Saints from the time of Adam on down.
- 20:12Those who are with Christ will come with him in great glory and
- 20:16might. And remember the world does not
- 20:18have to get any more wicked. The church has to become more
- 20:22pure. According to the Book of
- 20:23Revelation. First Thessalonians chapter 5,
- 20:26verse one and 11 now addresses the timing of the second coming.
- 20:30And he says in verses one and two in the MIV.
- 20:34Now brothers and sisters about the times and dates, you know
- 20:38very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in
- 20:41the night. Skipping down to verse six in
- 20:45chapter 5, let us not sleep. He's saying let's not be
- 20:49passive, let's not wait as if we were just dreaming about it.
- 20:52And then skipping out to verse eight, he says put on the
- 20:56breastplate of faith and love and for a helmet the hope of
- 21:00salvation. Now I don't know if you remember
- 21:02back in Ephesians he talked about the armor of God,
- 21:04Ephesians chapter 6, verse 10 through 17.
- 21:07And here we've got it again. Another sign that these are
- 21:10written by the same author, the same themes come forward.
- 21:13He says we've got to attack the adversary with the word of God
- 21:18and we've got to use our faith and our and the Savior salvation
- 21:21to protect our thoughts in our head, Verse 5 to 9 reads.
- 21:26God hath not appointed us to wrath but to obtain salvation by
- 21:30our Lord. Therefore, comfort yourselves
- 21:33together and edify one another. Isn't this beautiful?
- 21:37He's That's our role as Christians.
- 21:40We're not just to comfort those members of our own
- 21:42congregations. We're to reach out and comfort
- 21:44those in all of our sphere and edify them and testify of
- 21:48Christ. He continues on in verses 12 to
- 21:5115 to talk about relationships with each other.
- 21:54I love the verse 12 in the NIV. Actually, I'll read 12 and 13.
- 21:59We ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those
- 22:01who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who
- 22:05admonish you, Hold them in the highest regard in love because
- 22:09of their work. You know, I feel the same way.
- 22:12We're all a lay church and we need to give people a lot of
- 22:15slack and be grateful for their service.
- 22:18And if someone doesn't know how to counsel you correctly, don't
- 22:21be mad at him. He's just a voluntary.
- 22:23He didn't. He's doing the best he can, or
- 22:25she's doing the best she can. It's he's saying support each
- 22:29other, sustain each other. I love the idea that the mantle
- 22:32of the Lord blesses us, but it is our hands that are sustaining
- 22:36each other, first fourteen in the NIV reads.
- 22:39We urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle
- 22:43and disruptive and encourage the dishearted, help the weak, be
- 22:48patient with everyone. And then he goes on to talk
- 22:52about our relationships with God.
- 22:54So he's he's finished talking about relationships with people.
- 22:57And in verse 16 to 22, I'm still in First Thessalonians chapter
- 23:00five. He now talks about our need to
- 23:03draw on the powers of heaven. He says in verse 16, rejoice
- 23:10evermore and going all the way down to verse 22, I'm just going
- 23:13to read some of these. They're beautiful.
- 23:15Pray without ceasing or constantly is another
- 23:19translation in everything. Give thanks, or in every
- 23:23circumstance, whatever. Quench not the Spirit or in
- 23:28other translations, don't stifle the Spirit, Despise not
- 23:32prophesying, or don't reject even the prophecies either.
- 23:37Prove all things, hold fast to that which is good.
- 23:41Abstain from all appearances of evil.
- 23:44These are powerful statements on how we can go through the
- 23:48refiners fire and come out stronger, and those of us that
- 23:52are already partaking in the sacrament and doing our best can
- 23:55apply these things every hour of our lives.
- 23:59And then Paul gives his final blessings in this letter from
- 24:02chapter 5, verse 23 to 28, and I'll read from the MIV.
- 24:07Starting with verse 25, brothers and sisters, pray for us.
- 24:11Create all God's people with a holy kiss and skipping down to
- 24:15verse 27, have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters
- 24:19you know. This is I want everybody to hear
- 24:21this And then he closes it up and will now start with Second
- 24:26Thessalonians. This is also written in close
- 24:30proximity, probably again in the second mission with just a few
- 24:35months after the first was written in the 2nd letter of
- 24:40Thessalonians. The three main themes that Paul
- 24:43emphasizes are he hears that they are really being persecuted
- 24:47and so he wants to talk about how to endure persecution about
- 24:50Christ second coming and about the need to work together.
- 24:54It's a it's a very good unifying letter.
- 24:58I'll just go with a little bit through the outline here.
- 25:00He first gives salutations and thanksgivings and 1st 4 verses
- 25:04and then chapter one verses 5 to 10 to persevere through these
- 25:07persecutions. Then he gives this beautiful
- 25:10prayer. He actually gives 3 prayers in
- 25:12this letter, but verses 1112 is the first prayer and then
- 25:16chapter two he turns to the second coming.
- 25:19He first talks about the apostasy and Satan's power and
- 25:23then he gives another beautiful prayer for them.
- 25:25And then in chapter three he requests their prayers and they
- 25:28all need to work together. And he gives another prayer in
- 25:31verses 16 to 18 of chapter 3 and then his final salutations.
- 25:35But they think that's probably added added a little bit later.
- 25:39Let's start by reading chapter one, verse 2.
- 25:41Grace unto You and Peace from God our Father, the Lord Jesus
- 25:45Christ. It's just how he starts.
- 25:47Romans and Corinthians and Galatians and Ephesians and
- 25:50Flippians and Clausians and Thessalonians.
- 25:53You know this grace and peace. It's grace is the Greek greeting
- 25:58and then Shalom would be the Hebrew greeting or the Aramaic.
- 26:01So he has this great way of combining those two.
- 26:04First four and five in the NIV reads, we boast about your
- 26:08perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials that
- 26:13you are enduring, and as a result you will be counted
- 26:17worthy of the Kingdom of God for which you are suffering now.
- 26:22We do not encourage self-inflicted.
- 26:24As I talked about last week, self-inflicted pain is not what
- 26:28God asks for, but he does allow us to receive pain and
- 26:34persecution and to suffer so that we can fall on our knees
- 26:38and receive the strength of God and be empowered by him and
- 26:43become a new person through our Savior.
- 26:46We also read about this in Acts chapter 5, Romans 8, Flippians
- 26:491:00 and all these are in my handout.
- 26:51I've got several of them where the Saints are persecuted and
- 26:54the Lord brings them through. Going back though, to chapter
- 26:58one, let's continue on. In verse six and seven in the
- 27:00NIV, God is just He will pay back troubles to those who
- 27:05trouble you and give relief to you when you are troubled.
- 27:11This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in
- 27:14blazing fire with his powerful angels.
- 27:17It sounds like Paul thinks it's just right around the corner,
- 27:20but in another chapter they'll go back and address the timing.
- 27:23Right now, though, he's just encouraging them to persevere
- 27:26during the persecution. And in verses 5 to 10, that's
- 27:30his whole thing I'll just read versus 9 and 10 in the JST who
- 27:34shall be punished with destruction.
- 27:37Now the word that he crossed out there is everlasting
- 27:41destruction. Joseph felt so strongly that
- 27:44heaven was a place where there was forgiveness.
- 27:46There were second chances, there's third chances, and that
- 27:50that we will all be resurrected and that all will receive a
- 27:54Kingdom of glory. And what we really, really
- 27:57desire in our hearts is what we do.
- 27:59And so if you really, really desire it, you will act in
- 28:03accordance what God is asking us to do, versus 6 to 8 in the ESV
- 28:08reads. God considers it just to repay
- 28:10with affliction those who afflict you, and to grant relief
- 28:15to you who are afflicted When the Lord Jesus is revealed from
- 28:19heaven with his mighty angels inflaming fire, inflicting
- 28:22vengeance. So you get the image that Paul
- 28:25really thinks this is going to happen and that all these people
- 28:28are hurting them, are going to be immediately punished.
- 28:30And that is something that early Christianity had to deal with
- 28:34for years and years because it didn't happen.
- 28:36It hasn't happened. It's Millennium now and we're
- 28:39still waiting. Verse 11 and 12 is this
- 28:41beautiful first prayer. We pray always for you that he
- 28:45may count you worthy of his calling of our God, so that the
- 28:49name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you and in him.
- 28:53That's the Bob translation. Then in chapter 2, Paul moves on
- 28:57to the Second Coming, and it's all about how to prepare for it
- 29:01from verses 1 to 15. I'd like to read from verse
- 29:04three in the Joseph Smith translation, Chapter 2, verse
- 29:07three. Let no man deceive you by any
- 29:10means and then he crosses out a whole bunch and he said there
- 29:14shall come a falling away first. Now do you remember back in Acts
- 29:19they talked about there were wolves in the church.
- 29:21They were wolves dressed in sheep's clothing kind of
- 29:24imagery. But here this falling away is
- 29:27referred to as a rebellion in the RSV or the NIV or a revolt
- 29:31in the Jerusalem Bible or I love the Nava mass apostasy.
- 29:37Nepal is telling them loud and clear Christ is going to come.
- 29:41Everything's going to be equal and and though there will be a
- 29:44punishment afflicted but it's not going to come until there is
- 29:48a mass apostasy. Verse three reads and the man of
- 29:53sin be revealed the son of perdition.
- 29:57Now in Latin perdition means to destroy.
- 30:00You know, this is not just a happen chance, It's planned
- 30:03defection. It's desertion.
- 30:05In fact, I like some of the other translations to rebel.
- 30:08The lost one is the JBA, man of lawlessness.
- 30:12The son of perdition has also the name of wickedness.
- 30:15You know, this apostasy was not a passive movement.
- 30:18The devil planned it. It's dangerous, it's it's well
- 30:22worked out and all his minions are now working full force.
- 30:26In fact we just heard from the prophet four times as much.
- 30:30Chapter 2, verse four in the NIV reads He will oppose and will
- 30:34exalt himself over everything that is called God or is
- 30:38worshipped so that he, meaning the devil, sets itself up in
- 30:41God's temple proclaiming himself to be God.
- 30:45So this is just two decades after Christ's ministry.
- 30:48This was not passive nor was it gradual.
- 30:51Jesus foretold about it. Do you remember in Matthew 24 he
- 30:55he gives them all this information and now Paul is just
- 30:58reminding them that that this is part of God's plan.
- 31:02But we can be saved and we can either come with him as angels
- 31:06from the other side of the veil or be on earth still and and
- 31:09join him. That way both will be united.
- 31:12Chapter 2, verse seven has another very long translation
- 31:15from the Joseph Smith translation and it it shows how
- 31:18Christ is in control of the situation.
- 31:21We can trust in God. He knows what's happening.
- 31:25I'll read to you from the JST. The mystery of iniquity does
- 31:28already work. And then here's the addition he
- 31:32it is who now worketh and Christ suffereth him to work until the
- 31:37time is fulfilled that he shall be taken out of the way.
- 31:42So it's it's God's allowing this because when we have opposition
- 31:49it sometimes spurs us into acting more valiantly and and
- 31:53taking us closer to our savior. Verse nine in the BSB reads the
- 31:58coming of the lawless one. That's that Satan again will be
- 32:02accompanied by the working of Satan with every kind of power
- 32:05and sign and false wonder. Satan and his minions have had a
- 32:09long time to learn how to make counterfeits.
- 32:12And not just with Moses in Pharaoh's palace did he make
- 32:16things look like they were happening, but in our own age we
- 32:20see Satan working overtime. In fact, our prophet said in
- 32:242018, in the coming days it will not be possible to survive
- 32:29spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting and
- 32:32constant influence of the Holy Ghost.
- 32:34This was repeated and repeated and repeated in one conference.
- 32:37It was repeated four times. We have got to hold on to the
- 32:42word of God and and and seek greater spiritual manifestations
- 32:47and and seek the gifts of the Spirit and exert more faith
- 32:51because that will be the only way we can hold on during all
- 32:55these temptations of the devil. There's another good Joseph
- 32:58Smith translation edition in chapter 2, verse 9 and 10, and
- 33:03you'll see that he he puts in perspective the falling away,
- 33:07Joseph added. Yay, the Lord, even Jesus who's
- 33:10coming is not until after their cometh a falling away, and then
- 33:16back to the King James by the working of Satan with all power
- 33:19and signs and lying and wonders, and skipping ahead to verse 10
- 33:23because they received not the love of truth.
- 33:27We have to want to love truth more than we want to love, to be
- 33:30politically correct, or to be socially acceptable, or to
- 33:34assume that what our culture has taught us is right, is right.
- 33:38No, God has taught us what is right.
- 33:41That's where we need to go. I don't know if you remember
- 33:43back in your church history days, but I think one of Joseph
- 33:46Smith's favorite topics was the gift of the spirit and his His
- 33:50nephew George A Smith said the thing that Joseph spoke more on
- 33:54than anything else was the gift of the discernment of spirits
- 33:58because he felt it was so needed to discern what is right from
- 34:01wrong. And Brigham Young picks up on
- 34:03the same thing, and I'll quote from the Journal of Discourse is
- 34:06here. In all this, the power of the
- 34:09devil is limited, but the power of God is unlimited.
- 34:15Back to Thessalonians chapter 2, verse 13.
- 34:18This is the NIV. We ought always to thank God for
- 34:21you brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose
- 34:25you as the first fruits to be saved through the sanctifying
- 34:29work of the Spirit. Do you remember what he's
- 34:31talking about here with the first fruits?
- 34:33That's one of the things that was harvested first and taken to
- 34:36the temple. That was their tithes in
- 34:39whatever fruit production it was.
- 34:40You took your first fruits instead of feeding your hungry
- 34:43family, You took it to God and fed the priest, and you used it
- 34:47as an offering, and then they would be allowed to feed.
- 34:51And the Lord promises that he will feed you if you give to
- 34:53them first. So these first fruits are what
- 34:56is sanctified, what is what is given to God.
- 34:58It's very sacred. And he's saying you are the
- 35:02first fruits. You're the ones that mean the
- 35:04most to me because you're given to God.
- 35:06It sounds as if the early Christians were very interested
- 35:09in the timing of the second coming.
- 35:11I think I'm very interested in the timing of the second Coming.
- 35:14But Brigham gave some caution on that one too, and I'd like to
- 35:16read to you from him. Do not be too anxious for the
- 35:21Lord to hasten his work. Let our anxiety be centered upon
- 35:25this one thing, the sanctification of our own
- 35:29hearts, the purifying of our affections, the preparing of
- 35:33ourselves for the approach of the events that are hastening
- 35:36upon us. This should be our concern.
- 35:39This should be our study. This should be our daily prayer,
- 35:44seeking to have the Spirit of Christ that we may wait
- 35:46patiently the time of the Lord and prepare ourselves the times
- 35:51that are coming. This is our duty.
- 35:53Isn't that a great motivating message?
- 35:56Paul Nix gives his second prayer blessing in chapter 2, verses 16
- 36:00to 17, and I'll just read part of it in the MIV.
- 36:03God our Father who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal
- 36:08encouragement and Good Hope. Encourage your hearts and
- 36:12strengthen you in every good deed and word.
- 36:16Paul talks two or three times about the need to be
- 36:19self-sufficient, the need to work with your own hands.
- 36:22You recall back in the book of Acts, Paul was a tent maker and
- 36:25he joined Aquila and Priscilla and made tents with them to pay
- 36:28his way. And so this becomes a theme in
- 36:30chapter 3 from verses 6 to 15. This need to we all need to
- 36:34work. It's part of the law of
- 36:36consecration. We all have to work.
- 36:37We can do what we can. I'll read just from six and
- 36:41seven. In the MIV, we command you
- 36:43brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who's
- 36:46idle and disruptive. Follow our example.
- 36:49We were not idle when we were with you.
- 36:52Next, Paul requests their prayers, and in Second
- 36:55Thessalonians chapter 3, verse 15, he says, Finally, pray for
- 36:59us brothers and sisters that the Lord's message may spread, that
- 37:04we may be delivered from skipping ahead a little bit from
- 37:06the evil people and then down to verse 3 and he will strengthen
- 37:11you and protect you from the evil one.
- 37:14This is a promise that has been restored, those of us that have
- 37:18taken upon ourselves. Our covenants in the temple are
- 37:21promised that we will not be destroyed until our mission is
- 37:23complete if we live the teachings of our Savior.
- 37:28And I guess he got some reports that there were some pretty lazy
- 37:31people because in verse 13 he says brothers and sisters never
- 37:36tire of doing what is good. And you know, as a mom of little
- 37:40kids, I was always tired. And now in my life I am often
- 37:45tired. But he says don't be tired of
- 37:48well doing. Allow the spirit to rejuvenate
- 37:50you. In chapter 3, verse 14 and 15, I
- 37:53want to read from the MIV. Just take special note of anyone
- 37:56who does not obey. Don't associate with him
- 38:00skipping up to verse 15. Do not regard them as an enemy,
- 38:04but warn them as you would a fellow believer.
- 38:07You know, don't follow bad examples.
- 38:10Even if they're within the church.
- 38:11You know you can love them, but don't follow them.
- 38:13And then it ends with his own handwritten script, as he
- 38:17usually does. Verse 17 reads salutation from
- 38:21Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle.
- 38:25So I write the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
- 38:30Amen. You know, in a day and age where
- 38:33letters could be very easily captured and torn and replaced
- 38:38and misunderstood, and communication was so carefully
- 38:42taken out and these early Saints were in desperate need to
- 38:47communicate as the flock was being persecuted.
- 38:50And so Paul sent Timothy and Silas and others back and forth,
- 38:56back and forth, getting these letters.
- 38:58I am so grateful that we can get on our knees and hear from the
- 39:01Spirit, and we can listen to the words of the prophet as well as
- 39:06read them. May you draw closer to the Lord
- 39:09as we study these wonderful books of 1st and 2nd
- 39:11Thessalonians this week. I pray in the name of Jesus
- 39:15Christ. Amen.
