When cattle buyer Al Morley turns up knifed in the back on the trail to Buffalo Flat, Marshal Matt Dillon must sort out a tangled trail of jealousy and betrayal involving a hired hand, a young bartender, and the alluring Ava Marlee — a woman whose admirers seem to have a habit of dying. As Dillon tracks a fleeing suspect and a stolen $10,000 payroll, he starts to wonder if the real killer is still back in Dodge.
