- 0:13Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:15It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, Salafka's multi-award
- 0:18winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:20With me today to speak about something which we've spoken about many times on
- 0:25It's My Money, with me is Rene Fandemeva.
- 0:27And Rene, I saw an article that you kindly sent me and it's all about...
- 0:28TFSA.
- 0:29Now that's an acronym for tax-free savings account.
- 0:34And it's been with us for a long, long time now.
- 0:37But suddenly a couple of things have happened.
- 0:39Number one that's happened is that we've got our first TFSA millionaire, I think.
- 0:43That was announced, I think, sometime late last year.
- 0:46But also there's been a material change in the amount that you can invest.
- 0:51So that's an important chat we're going to have.
- 0:55Yes, definitely.
- 0:57The limit change can feel like very small to some people, but it's quite
- 1:02significant.
- 1:04The small changes can have a very big impact on your long-term growth.
- 1:07It went up 10,000, but a think client needs to remember it's 10,000 a year,
- 1:13but the lifelong limit is still the same.
- 1:16So just remember that when you're doing your monthly contributions.
- 1:21But small changes makes a very big impact.
- 1:24Yes, and of course, small changes then as the economy continues or hopefully grows
- 1:30and
- 1:32certain relaxations are made in future budgets, then it will continue to
- 1:38increase, I would have thought, because it's been terribly successful.
- 1:40You make the point in your article, Renee, that timing is terribly important.
- 1:43Why is that?
- 1:44Timing is important in the market because it's crucial for long-term growth,
- 1:52no matter how small you start.
- 1:53with your tax-free savings, just start.
- 1:56It's crucial to start from a young age in order to gain that long-term growth and
- 2:03focus on compounding your investment growth.
- 2:07And for example, the previous limit was 36,000.
- 2:10So you would have taken about 14 years to get to that lifelong limits of 500,000.
- 2:17Now it's currently, you're sitting at almost 11 years.
- 2:20So it takes a while to get to that lifelong limit if you use your max annual
- 2:27limit
- 2:29of 46 now.
- 2:31But time in the market is very, very crucial.
- 2:32And I would just say just start.
- 2:34It's not necessary that you have to do a max lump sum every year,
- 2:39but just start and create that discipline and consistency.
- 2:44Yeah, I mean, again, in your article, there's a graphic here.
- 2:48And it gives three different outcomes.
- 2:50It says lump sum at the beginning of the tax year, contributions monthly and lump
- 2:56sum at the end of the tax year.
- 2:58And it goes down from number one to number three.
- 3:00But as you say, you must just do what you can afford, of course.
- 3:05Monthly contributions, as I said, are probably better for most people because
- 3:11not a lot of people can just shell
- 3:13out that lump sum right at the beginning.
- 3:15So tell us about the monthly contributions first of all.
- 3:16Okay, so I'm just going to start with the lump sum.
- 3:18The lump sum is like your best option if you invest like the beginning of the tax
- 3:23year.
- 3:24That's by far the best option,
- 3:26but monthly contributions is the most realistic form for any individual.
- 3:31And I have to clarify that there's no need for you to max out your annual limit every
- 3:38month.
- 3:39You can add what you can afford.
- 3:41We have the saying in Afrikaans, muni osaaf ni futskeetni.
- 3:45Like.
- 3:46add what you can afford and don't live above it.
- 3:50So monthly contributions is the most realistic.
- 3:52Just create that discipline, consistency, and even start with 500.
- 3:57Just create that routine of you need to save for your long-term growth.
- 4:02One thing that you do make a very clear point about is that, okay,
- 4:07the TFSA is a very good product and it was very welcome when it was introduced by
- 4:12Treasury,
- 4:13but it's not just an isolated.
- 4:15an isolated advantage it's got to be part of a broader plan how do you fit when you
- 4:22sit down with a client for example
- 4:24renee how do you fit in the tfsa with a broader financial plan it's definitely a
- 4:28part
- 4:29of your overall investment
- 4:31portfolios and everything it's it's not just one fix so i would say the first
- 4:38thing someone needs to do is
- 4:40start a tax free it's like the the best thing and some people find it like
- 4:43underrated it's the best form to start it it creates tax-free withdrawals growth
- 4:49interest
- 4:51everything there's no cgt attached to it and it i feel like it forms a great part
- 4:56of your retirement annuity your
- 4:58retirement annuity provides you with a tax relief upfront where your tax-free savings
- 5:04provide you with
- 5:06a tax-free income in your later life when you need it.
- 5:08A tax-free and a retirement annuity works very well together.
- 5:11They are completely separate but they work well together with the tax relief upfront
- 5:18and the tax-free savings giving you
- 5:20a tax-free withdrawal or income when you need it later in life.
- 5:23What is the simplest way to start?
- 5:24I mean let's say that somebody has had his or her head in the sand for a long time
- 5:31now and wants to start with the tax-free
- 5:33savings account.
- 5:35What's the best way to approach it?
- 5:37Step one, for example.
- 5:39Step one is I will feel like, what can you afford every month?
- 5:40Can you do a lump sum here and there?
- 5:42Can you do like the minimum contribution of, let's say, 500 grand?
- 5:47Go to your nearest well-respected investment platforms like 91 or Ellen
- 5:52Gray.
- 5:53Or if you want to advise it, come to Brent as well.
- 5:55And we'll take you through the steps.
- 5:57We'll explain everything in detail for you.
- 6:00I have to say we pride on being.
- 6:03Good relationship with your clients and trusting them and letting them trust you.
- 6:08And I will say for tax free, just start.
- 6:11That's the easiest thing is creating your budget and getting the minimum you can
- 6:17save every
- 6:19month and just go with it.
- 6:21The other thing that always comes across whenever I read an article about TFSA,
- 6:27it always uses children as an example.
- 6:30And I think there's two things here.
- 6:34It's because it's a nice handy sum, first of all, and obviously the tax-free
- 6:39element.
- 6:41But also it sort of engenders a discipline within the child that you're gifting this
- 6:46money to,
- 6:48to start saving.
- 6:50You can say, now look here, young man or young woman,
- 6:50look what this account has been doing for you over five years.
- 6:55And it's quite an impressive way to make children understand how important saving
- 6:59is.
- 7:00Creating a tax free for a child is definitely the best way in creating
- 7:05discipline,
- 7:07consistency in them and explaining to them what is investment, how it started,
- 7:11how you can grow your money.
- 7:13And in our industry, we see a lot of clients starting investments for their
- 7:20young children with tax free.
- 7:22It's the best way to save money for them.
- 7:22And in the future, the parents will be extremely happy that they did that because
- 7:29I will say for education,
- 7:31it will.
- 7:33before their first car, it takes a lot of pressure off their parents.
- 7:34And like you say, it creates discipline.
- 7:37And they need to get used to this industry and saving for later life or emergencies
- 7:44and
- 7:46all of that stuff.
- 7:48And of course, there's no excuse not to do it if you do have the means and you do
- 7:51have the knowledge,
- 7:53you have to do it because of that very positive development of the increase that
- 7:57you spoke about.
- 7:59And as you said, Renee, it doesn't sound like much.
- 7:59But with compounding, with the power of compounding, it's suddenly, in a few
- 8:06years' time, suddenly you've got a millionaire on your hands.
- 8:08Oh, definitely.
- 8:09It's the small changes usually turns out into the bigger things.
- 8:13Renee, thank you very much for explaining all that.
