- 1:58[SPEAKER_01]: Ron Funches mean while might be the most cheerful man in all of comedy.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: You've heard that voice everywhere.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: Pro Wrestling commentary, he's saying father figure outside of a restaurant on New Girl.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, together they are back in this season three of Lute on Apple TV+.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: Alongside my Rudolph and an incredible cast.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: And the pair are going to get into what it's like returning to the characters for third time.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about how much of their real lives influence the writing and the magic of collaborating with the show's team as well.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: They're also going to share what it was like filming one of my favorite episodes.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's the nude beach episode and Henry Winkler is the big cameo in that one.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: So a lot of fun stories behind that one.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: We'll hear about how their off-screen friendships fuel the on-screen
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: And even a little bit with the guy going on, Ron, he's always out doing his comedy tours and Michaela Jay's got new music.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, it was just a few months ago.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: She released her latest single, two to tango.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to get into all that and more as we discuss season three of loot on Apple TV Plus.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's Kyle Meredith with Michaela Jay Rodriguez and Ron Funches.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, Bicking Grats.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: I love the season so much.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: You guys are amazing in it as usual.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think you know what's it like.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: Michele J made me start with you here.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what's it like because you three seasons in, right?
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is the third time you get to return to a character.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like how easy is it to find that groove, to find that because because your character is so high strong anyway, to be in that.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_04]: I think it's the people you work with more importantly and I have a lucky and blessed to work with not only extreme professionalists and iconic people and who really take their craft seriously, but we really care for each other.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_04]: Like we have a deep booty care for each other and we also know that we both have a love for our craft.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_04]: So I think it's really great to wake up in the morning and know I get to like see their faces every single
- 4:05[SPEAKER_04]: day and a smile and be happy.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_04]: Like I love when I get to see Stephanie and we talk about musical theater.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_04]: I love when I see Ron and Joel and we're talking about games, Pokemon, Marvel rivals.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_04]: We do play it.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_04]: And me and Maya, we're talking about fashion.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, the list can go on.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_04]: I can it's a really great place to come into and that's why our chemistry rocks on camera because we rooted it and solidified it throughout these years and also just throughout our work.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: Does this playing someone so high-strung like that does that ever rub off like just to be so tense?
- 4:36[SPEAKER_04]: No, Ron can attest to that I am a fool in a half.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_04]: I'm a whole fool.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not going to say it happening where I am silly backstage.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_04]: So it does not rub off.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_04]: And if anything, I run away from her if I can.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_04]: Just um, if I were in like in real life to get a chance to say this, I'll be right back where you got to smell the flowers.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_04]: You really do.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: We'll run for you for you.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like, when do you offer us learned about this story's arcs and everything?
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: Because seeing where everyone gets to go with this season, like, do you get to have opinions in it?
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: Do you kind of take it as it is?
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: How does that part of the process work?
- 5:09[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it's a great collaboration.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_05]: It's one of the best parts about this job, is that they take a lot of our real life.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_05]: loves our situations that happened to us and ask if we're okay with using them in the show.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_05]: And like the second season, my arc about pro wrestling and starting my own league was just all based off the fact that, um, what a couple of the writers knew that I had trained to be a pro wrestler and had a couple matches.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_05]: So they were like, let's put that in the show.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_05]: So usually, you know, a few months before we start shooting, they'll kind of invite us in to the writers room and
- 5:44[SPEAKER_05]: what they think in, and then ask us for our own input about what we would like to do, and it's just become pretty easy, because it thinks, especially with the services, and they have a great handle on the character.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_05]: So they just kind of told me what they were thinking, and I didn't really have, I was like, yep, that sounds great.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_05]: Let's do it.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: Does it work the same way with the lines?
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: Because Ron, you've got, I mean, some of those lines.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: I could write some down for every episode, but I'd pick two here with
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: country musician Roger Clinton has a brother, which I thought was fantastic.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a ghost in the toilet, and he wants to talk to you.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like, is that coming from the writers?
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: Is that coming from you?
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: Because it feels so very specific to you.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_05]: It's a mix.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_05]: And I will say both of those were from the writers.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_05]: Um, it's a great collaboration with, they allow us to improvise, we're improvising all day long, but like the writing has gotten so good and so specific to us is one of my favorite things about the show is that they never write a joke that can be interchangeable.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_05]: There's not a joke that comes out of my mouth that was sound natural coming out of Sofia's or coming out of Nicholas.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_05]: They're all from a unique perspective.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_05]: And so I think that allows a blend of where you don't know was that improvised?
- 6:54[SPEAKER_05]: Was that written?
- 6:55[SPEAKER_05]: One of my favorite parts about being Howard is that I show up to work pretty much.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_05]: Like Howard, I'm she's probably the furthest from her character and I'm the closest because like I'll show up to work in my regular clothes and they just like, oh, are you already ready?
- 7:08[SPEAKER_05]: You're on set?
- 7:09[SPEAKER_05]: We dress alike.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_05]: We're pretty much the same thing.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_05]: So it's just the fun place to be.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: Speaking of clothes, I've got to bring up the new beach episode with Henry Winkler because I feel like that's going to be a pretty iconic episode, not just in this show, but maybe in TV history to there.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: I know that's probably I've got I hope there's some television magic going on in there, but what was it like shooting that episode?
- 7:36[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I enjoyed shooting it.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_04]: I think on the personal note when we were, you know, behind the scenes, Henry was such a father figure.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_04]: Like, he's such a sweet and generous person and soul.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_04]: And he, I remember like him giving me a kiss on the forehead and I was like, oh my God, thank you so much.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_04]: You don't know how much it's been to me.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_04]: And there are also moments I'm sure that you've had with him too.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_04]: They're like, like, like,
- 7:58[SPEAKER_04]: He's amazing.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_05]: I mean what yeah, I run out to run it to him at dinner on occasion now He come up and say hi to me.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_05]: It's the best thing you wanted the best things in my life So it I would say just being able to see a legend like that who still is down the play and down to be silly And was just so like inviting and in complimentary of all of us like he was aware of our work and You know, he's still if I post up
- 8:25[SPEAKER_05]: comedy that I put online.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_05]: He's one of the first people to leave many comments about how funny I am.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_05]: Is a true like pleasure to get to work with him.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_05]: And I just want to say we shot the most we shot that in January.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_05]: So it was cold and so for not just Henry, but for all the background, all the extras that we're working that day.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_05]: they really put in a lot of work and they were pretty much but naked so um it was a lot harder than it looked they made it look like paradise and fun but trust me they were cold and not filling it so it was I'm glad you really liked that episode because it was a lot of hard work for them yeah well now I got a new respect for it's on top of that
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: Which, by the way, you quickly point up because you mentioned your comedy because then you get the comedy tour and Michaela J, two to tango, that latest single is so great as well.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm hoping that there's more new music behind that as well.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: There it is.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're coming soon.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: And I quickly just say what you all do with the real world reflections of this show.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: I know we talked about the comedy a lot, but...
- 9:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, from the AI and what billionaires are doing and the heck, I work in public radio, so the resension and all that.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like seeing the way you all tell those stories is so important within this, it's just more compliments that can give you all how this is all put together and the chemistry and the stories.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: So again, seriously, congratulations.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: And, um, kind of, I hope we get to see so much more.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: I really really get you saying that.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll be right back right after this.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back, it's Kyle and Meredith.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so that, thank you to Michaela J. Rodriguez and Ron Funches.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: It was a bit of a short interview session this week, sometimes it's how the dice shake, the cards roll, and sound all comes out.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes on these junkets, some people say they don't have a lot of time.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to just include an old interview that has nothing to do with this week's featured interview with Michaela J. Rodriguez with Ron Fungis or with Luke.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: But I was just listening to an interview I did with Janelle Monet recently.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: and she's one of my favorite artists of course she does both sides the music and the acting and all that well let's just do that one because it's a great interview it's a very fun interview so uh you're going to get a little bonus here uh part two today this is Kyle Meredith with Jinnell Monet uh how are you let me say the the age of pleasure is such a fun album and such a beautifully complex record
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: that, I mean, seriously, you know, the surface level of it and just about all the funs and then the dive into it, the musical complexities, I think I should just throw you the congratulations on this because once again, you've done it.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_02]: No, thank you so much.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_02]: I still kind of, I'm so happy you're enjoying it.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_02]: I really, really made a lot to you.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: So starting with the words, one of the first lines we hear anyways, like I'm not the same.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, and that's sort of the mission statement I feel like right at the beginning of it.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: How much of that is personal?
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: And like how you're feeling about yourself in that moment versus maybe the perception, I guess, of how other people see you.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_02]: Mm.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_02]: I think that, you know,
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: Those I actually wasn't going to delete that off at the beginning, but my friends, you know, wrote this album with friends and I felt super safe enough to sort of explore more parts of who I am as an artist and, you know, that moment after like talk and to then listen into it, just represent it, taking everybody along with me, you know, as I transformed and and.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: and gave myself permission to enter this age of pleasure.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: So I guess, you know, personal, you know, a personal moment that you guys were witnessing as I ushered into this age of pleasure, you know, where we are and given myself permission to tap in, you know, even further.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: Why did you feel like you wanted to delete it at one point?
- 12:35[SPEAKER_02]: Well, because it was, it was me literally trying to find the note, you know, find, find how I was going to say something.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes that's important.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes, the process of how somebody gets to become who they are, or realizing who they are is important to see.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_02]: I thought that was a,
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: We'll also hearing about how, you know, Ali inspired that a little bit.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm in Louisville, that's where I'm based.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm only about mile a half, I think, from his burial site right here.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_02]: And, oh, yeah.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_02]: Ah.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: Just legend, icon, yeah, that continues to inspire.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: I love hearing that.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: I speak of the names, you've got some iconic names on this.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, look at the Grace Jones with our last sister Nancy on the French 75, other than just them being complete icons themselves.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: What are these voices represent?
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: Like why did you, I mean, is it like a guest list, a dream list kind of a thing?
- 13:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm a personal fan and when I thought about this, this music, this is a soundtrack to a lifestyle.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_02]: A lifestyle made my friends live and we love to celebrate, we love to party, we love to, you know, host parties and you know, have moments where we're playing music across the diaspora.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: You know, this album is very pan African.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's a love letter to the diaspora and it was only right to include these strong powerful voices that soundtrack our parties all the time.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_02]: Sister Nancy bomb bomb in the farm, you know, Patrick, you know, these are two Jamaican queens who are strong, who are powerful, who are outliers from where they were there from.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I love linking up with other outliers.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's so fun to hear in those little moments, especially in there, because I don't think I'd looked at the track.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: I looked at the guest list before I heard it, and suddenly it's like, I know these voices.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: And then you've got like, if I read this, right, Buzzbee Berkeley helped inspire some of the visuals.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: Is that right?
- 14:47[SPEAKER_02]: I love, I love how you read liner note.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: But seeing like some of those images in the videos, it's like, oh, yeah, with the legs and everything like that, like it felt like if that were true, then yeah, I could see it.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you know, listen, art, art, art inspires art.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: What was it about, what was it about that era that was inspiring, I guess?
- 15:10[SPEAKER_02]: What era was that?
- 15:11[SPEAKER_02]: Buzz, I mean, I mean, 60s.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I knew it was like in the 50s or 60s and those musical areas.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we shot everything.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_02]: You probably told my house, we shot everything on film, 8 millimeter, 16 millimeter.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_02]: And that was important for me for Brown and Black folks to have that documented in that way, because when I go back and I look at the 50s and 60s and I look at what was caught of us on camera, it was a lot of violence against our bodies and not in this age of pleasure, not today.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we are in our joy, you see us in our joy and that was important.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_02]: of the heaviness that is going on in the world.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_02]: And we honor our paths, but we also create a future and as somebody who thinks about the next generation, it's joy.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_02]: I wanted to document that joy, that joy of the answering, that joy of freedom for us, that joy of liberation for us.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: I love that, I really do.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: And it's so much fun to watch all the things.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, I say, watching, knowing that you've got this
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: career.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, more than dual, I should say, but speaking about the film side of it, too, and class onion was so good and seeing daylight resistances, is that your next thing?
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: Is that, is that what we're gonna see?
- 16:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Josephine Baker.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_02]: I mean Josephine Baker, it's buying on Nazis for A24 is a hell of a. Yeah, yeah, no, she, she, I mean, you know, I owe her so much, she's such an incredible dynamic,
- 16:55[SPEAKER_02]: black woman who gave so much, and it was super liberated.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_02]: She definitely would have been at our parties and we would have been at hers, you know, how we've been in the same time, it's right in period.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_01]: I would ask, you know, a little bit further on that though, knowing it's age 24, it usually means it's a bit of a heightened level of consciousness or visuals or whatever, what can you tell me about this series because it sounds so interesting.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_02]: That's pretty, I don't want to say too much, you know, as some, I mean, I'm starring in it and, you know, we'll speak about her as a spine, you know, she spoke five languages.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_02]: She was, you know, not just a singer, entertainer actor, dancer, you know, she was somebody who really, really cared about community.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_02]: She was liberated from the time where women let alone black women could behave in that way, you know, and.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's pretty much all because I mean, she owned, I will say her pet Cheetah is intriguing to me.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_02]: So we got to see like how she lived like she owned a shatto and a Bugatti and, you know, she was bisexual and she was just super free like talk about like a pioneer or free ass motherfucker like that was her and then seeing her in that era and pairs and
- 18:16[SPEAKER_02]: You know, getting, getting, getting to sink my teeth into that row, like it's going to be a challenge, but in the best possible way.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll be right back right after this.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's Kyle Meredith with Genel Monet.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I brought up at the beginning the musicality of this and how everything just flows together as, you know, another feels like conceptual piece.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, when you're when you were putting the music together, how like how tricky is that to think like it's got a flow like was that always the concept where it was going to be this one big musical piece as well.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like we, we just got really specific about who we were right now for and again, this is made with my friends by my friends, you know, love letter to us.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_02]: and centered in joy and celebration.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_02]: Like I knew I wanted people to take this with them on vacation or if they couldn't get on a vacation, it would teleport you to one, you know, in your mind and in your spirit and your heart.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_02]: Listen to it by yourself.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_02]: Like I got really specific on it and I knew I didn't want it to be too long.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_02]: I knew that, you know, it's not about the lengthiness of it.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's about an experience.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_02]: I always try to take people on experiences
- 19:29[SPEAKER_02]: you know, and this is no different.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, so thank you for staying and I have to give a shout out to Nate Rocket Wunder to Nana Kwabena and to Sensei Bwayna who all helped me with this project.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_02]: And of course, you know, you have all the features the people who came and were a part of it in the musician.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_02]: But it's just flow, man.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_02]: It just really flowed and, you know, sometimes you catch the flow and sometimes you don't and I'm just so happy
- 19:59[SPEAKER_02]: that people are living with it and owning it like it's theirs because it is, maybe it's now.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well it's so much fun and I appreciate your time talking about it today.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_01]: Such an honor to get to talk to you and happy 20th anniversary to the audition that first release as well.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_01]: And it's been a hell of a journey with you.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well we're still, you know, we're still getting started.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like, um,
- 20:25[SPEAKER_02]: I'm reborn, you know, so, so interesting is so very, so great to, to still be doing this and making things and making art and being in my joy because that's exactly where I am.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: I'm so joy for right now.
