- 0:00They say we're loud, opinionated, afraid Telling
- 0:05us to hush, dim our historical light But darlings,
- 0:09we're the Harpies, sharp and keen Unveiling the
- 0:12truth behind the silver screen History Harpies
- 0:17hear us roar Welcome to History Harpies. I'm
- 0:37Lauren. And I'm Christine. And this is, Lauren,
- 0:41Season 2. Oh my gosh. Let's just say Season 2
- 0:43of History Harpies. Which hopefully will be even
- 0:46better than Season 1. Even better. And I think
- 0:50it has to be Season 2 because of course, Lauren,
- 0:52we have had a long lag. It has been a long time
- 0:56since our last episode about Eddie Murphy. And
- 0:59our fans have been clamoring for more material.
- 1:04I keep hearing over the summer, why aren't you
- 1:07recording? Where's Christine? Haven't you seen
- 1:10the Odyssey? Why aren't you talking about all
- 1:12these things? And I'm just like, you know, we're
- 1:15on summer break. We've been to different places.
- 1:19We've traveled. We've tried to put our... you
- 1:23know, our work hats to the back burner for a
- 1:28minute. Not that this is work, but anyway, it
- 1:30took us a minute to get back together and also
- 1:34to collect some texts that we thought would be
- 1:38provocative and interesting to talk about. And
- 1:40no, we will not be talking about the Odyssey.
- 1:42I feel like that got its reviews and was. Back
- 1:49and forth and all over the zeitgeist over the
- 1:52summer and we are kind of done with it Although
- 1:54we did see the Odyssey together We did see the
- 1:57Odyssey together and I will add that my students
- 2:01in my Western Civ class They are discussing part
- 2:04of the Odyssey this week in section. So they
- 2:06are carrying that load So we don't need to know
- 2:09we don't need to know about it anymore. I think
- 2:12Odyssey is exhausted But I think we have to point
- 2:18out, Lauren, that one of the reasons why we could
- 2:20not do the pot over the summer is that you and
- 2:22I separately visited the 49th and the 50th. We
- 2:26did. United States. We did. States of America.
- 2:29And that is quite amazing. It is. I went to Hawaii.
- 2:32And I went to Alaska. And we both had a wonderful
- 2:35time. Yes. Fabulous. And I recommend Hawaii to
- 2:38anyone who is even remotely interested in going.
- 2:43And you recommend Alaska? I do. It was absolutely
- 2:46beautiful. Super beautiful. Nice and cool. Oh,
- 2:49loved it. Yeah. So our travels have refreshed
- 2:52us. And so then when we came back, we were sort
- 2:56of like, well, what movies are we going to go
- 2:58see? And if you're not familiar with Columbia,
- 3:02South Carolina, it's about 3 ,000 degrees in
- 3:07the summer. With 99 % humidity. Right. So seeing
- 3:11any movie is better than being, even walking
- 3:14to your car, seeing any movie. So Christine said,
- 3:17do you want to go to the movies? Like, what else
- 3:19are we going to do? We couldn't even go to the
- 3:21pool. It was just too hot. And the only movie
- 3:24that either one of us was even remotely up for
- 3:29seeing, mainly, I think, because it had been
- 3:31an Odyssey trailer. Yes. Is this movie called
- 3:34One Night Only. And so we saw it and we were
- 3:38like, Maybe there were 10 people in the theater?
- 3:41There were enthusiastic people there. Yes, there
- 3:44were. I enjoyed the company. Yes. But there were
- 3:48probably about 10 other people in the theater.
- 3:50And apparently, as we just learned, apparently
- 3:51it bombed at the box office. It bombed at the
- 3:54box office. I will say justifiably. Yes. Justifiably
- 3:57bombed at the box office. The movie is a horrible
- 3:58movie. So you might be saying, well, ladies,
- 4:03why are you going to talk about this horrible
- 4:05movie and then... And then we thought, well,
- 4:08the movie was horrible, but it raised a lot of
- 4:11interesting questions, mainly about why it made
- 4:13no sense. But also it made us think about other
- 4:16movies, which also some of them kind of horrible,
- 4:18but this genre of the sex comedy and what the
- 4:23sex comedy is supposed to be and whether we're
- 4:25done with it, whether as a culture, whether we
- 4:28can resurrect it and what what of the sex comedy
- 4:33and how we see certainly in one night only a
- 4:36real peculiar understanding of sex among Gen
- 4:41Z millennial. I mean, they're too young for millennials,
- 4:44whatever. Let's just say Gen Z. And so for those
- 4:48of you who have not seen One Night Only. And
- 4:50probably never will. And probably never will.
- 4:51And again, we don't recommend a watch. I think,
- 4:55again, as I read it in one review, it's like
- 4:57a plane movie. I agree with that. Yes. If something
- 5:00with Jennifer Lopez is not available on the plane,
- 5:04then watch this. For sure. Then watch this. For
- 5:06sure. This is a good play. Because you as well
- 5:09will probably start thinking of all of the completely
- 5:11illogical moments that are bonkers in this film.
- 5:15So the basic premise, in case you don't know,
- 5:18this is a United States where a few years before
- 5:20the action of this film happened, all premarital,
- 5:25and I think probably extramarital sex we don't
- 5:28know has been outlawed and it's kind of futuristic
- 5:32in that some biotech company has contracted with
- 5:36the government to put little tattoos on people's
- 5:39wrists to signify and you can choose your tattoo
- 5:42you oh I miss that That's why she chose the bridge.
- 5:45Oh, of course, of course. How could I forget
- 5:47that incredibly important thought point? Because
- 5:49it actually is. So you are tattooed if you are
- 5:52married or single and the whole thing is that
- 5:55there is one night a year when single people
- 5:59can have... Sex you can have sex apparently as
- 6:02many times as you want with as many people as
- 6:04you want But it is within that very set and it
- 6:08actually kind of was unfair because it's not
- 6:10a full 24 hours It's it really is a night a night,
- 6:13but here's the other thing. Okay To people who
- 6:16are wondering what I wondered, how do they know
- 6:19if you're having sex? Well, some kind of pheromones
- 6:22go off with your tattoo and the government will
- 6:26find out and police will come to your house and
- 6:30punish you and put you in prison and who knows
- 6:33what if you try to have sex with someone you
- 6:35are not married to. okay and so married people
- 6:39have certain color tattoos and single people
- 6:43have certain color tattoos like one is red and
- 6:45one is green i don't know and it like flat your
- 6:47red tattoo flashes green when you can actually
- 6:49have sex on this one night one night yes and
- 6:52so in effect we have what kind of seems to be
- 6:56a classic rom -com, a woman and a guy, Allie
- 7:01and... Owen. Owen, I've already forgotten his
- 7:04name. Owen owns a pizza shop. And Allie is an
- 7:06aspiring singer, and we're supposed to think
- 7:08she's a huge failure, even though she's singing
- 7:10like commercial jingles, which seems okay to
- 7:12me. Yeah, I'd be fine with that. Anyway, so we
- 7:15have a classic rom -com in that they meet each
- 7:17other, it's awkward, they keep running into each
- 7:19other, for reasons we don't quite understand.
- 7:21In route to having sex with other people. On
- 7:23route to having sex with other people. They seem
- 7:26like to have this kind of like hating relationship,
- 7:29which again makes no sense other than the fact
- 7:31that it's fitting a trope. Well they're both
- 7:33like attractive and there's absolutely no reason
- 7:35why the two of them shouldn't just go off and
- 7:37have sex. Yes. No. But in the middle of this,
- 7:41Ali's friend immediately meets another guy and
- 7:45has sex with him. And we see all these other
- 7:47people making out on top of tables in restaurants.
- 7:52We see people just kind of attacking each other.
- 7:56And these two, for whatever reason, just keep
- 7:58seeing each other. And they're like, nope, we're
- 8:00not going to do it. We're going to go find someone
- 8:02better. Oh, no, here's the reason why. I forgot.
- 8:05What? They are both committed to doing it with
- 8:08somebody that like means something to them. Oh,
- 8:10and here's another thought point that we didn't
- 8:12mention. Oh, yes. Owen has a girlfriend. Okay.
- 8:16Owen has a girlfriend. And the girlfriend announces
- 8:19at the beginning of the night, for reasons we
- 8:21don't know, I want to have sex with someone else
- 8:24tonight. Now keep in mind, listeners, she has
- 8:27not been able to have sex with her boyfriend
- 8:29Owen. For a year. For a year. They've had sex
- 8:31twice. They've had sex twice. Twice. Yes. Because,
- 8:34of course, again, they are not married. They
- 8:36are just dating. And so, for whatever reason,
- 8:38other than the plot, she goes off with someone
- 8:41else. And so, again, we have this kind of oh
- 8:43and alley back and forth. And one of the things
- 8:45that is also mysterious, Lauren and I had many
- 8:48questions about the logistics. As you would to
- 8:50listeners if you watched this. Yes, the logistics
- 8:52of this. One of the most basic ones, everyone
- 8:55is dressed in this really slutty way, whereas
- 8:58you could just basically be wearing like a garbage
- 9:00can and still get laid in this world where you
- 9:02just have like 18 hours or whatever it ends up
- 9:04being. The other question is, what constitutes
- 9:08sex? Because there are so many people making
- 9:10out and... whatever they're doing, they're filling
- 9:13each other up, they're all over each other, and
- 9:15then we're like, well, couldn't they do that
- 9:16normally? Normally, yes. What's the problem?
- 9:18What's the line that is crossed on the other
- 9:21364 days of the year? It's very, very unclear.
- 9:25Yes, and the movie also very kind of awkwardly
- 9:29shoe horns in this whole, like, oh, here's what
- 9:31happens with gay couples, where we're sort of
- 9:33led to believe that... There's not a problem
- 9:36for gay couples because they're just doing it
- 9:37anyway, which again was never really explained
- 9:40particularly well. No. But so we are basically
- 9:43talking just about straight people in this film.
- 9:46We are. So one of the things that then we really
- 9:49were so curious about is that, and certainly
- 9:52showed up in a lot of the reviews, this is a
- 9:55film that ends up being unbelievably conservative
- 9:58about sex. At exactly the same time, it claims
- 10:01to be criticizing conservatism about sex right
- 10:05it's supposed to be you know down with the totalitarian
- 10:09state right that's enforcing this mandate upon
- 10:13us okay but at the same time people are so skittish
- 10:17about any kind of you know non -normative sex
- 10:21so when people propose three sons people like
- 10:25Again, the queer sex is never addressed. And
- 10:31there are a number of other issues that come
- 10:34up that kind of fall outside the box of just
- 10:37anything that's just not vanilla. And everyone's
- 10:40like, oh no, we can't do that. And it in a lot
- 10:44of ways makes fun of people. I mean, there's
- 10:46a scene where Owen's... Mother? Yes. Is having
- 10:51sex with her - Played by Molly Ringwald? Yeah,
- 10:54with Molly Ringwald. Having sex with this guy
- 10:56in like bubble wrap. LeVar Burton. LeVar Burton.
- 11:00Okay. And everybody's like, oh my god! How weird!
- 11:03How kinky is that? Bubble wrap! Yeah. It doesn't
- 11:07show any kind of playfulness or any kind of like,
- 11:13wow, this is the night that we're really gonna
- 11:15like explore. Let it go. We're really gonna let
- 11:17it go. Let it go. You don't see any sex clubs,
- 11:19you don't see any kind of... There's nothing
- 11:21happening besides heterosexual couples going
- 11:25off and then having sex. And you really don't
- 11:28even see repetitive sex happening. No. You don't
- 11:31see somebody be like, I got laid 20 times. Come
- 11:33on. Good for me. Well, and what makes the whole
- 11:36thing I think especially weird is that I expected,
- 11:39and I'm guessing you did too. We didn't talk
- 11:41about this before. So there's an entire. passage
- 11:44where the two of them end up going to sort of
- 11:47this hidden party somewhere in Brooklyn or whatever.
- 11:50You know, it's like black limos and people at
- 11:53the door. Blindfolds. And I was like, this is
- 11:56going to be the sex club. Eyes Wide Shut. It's
- 11:57going to be a dungeon. Eyes Wide Shut. We're
- 11:58going to get, yes, Eyes Wide Shut. Right. We're
- 12:00going to get like fists. We're going to get,
- 12:02you know, pee, whole shebang. Right. But no,
- 12:06it's just basically people clubbing and Ali ends
- 12:08up singing what some Yaz song as much as I love
- 12:11Yaz. No, it's like it's like just a regular
- 12:13old nightclub with like a band and nobody's doing
- 12:17anything except listening to the band and it's
- 12:21a strange thing. And the other the only way in
- 12:25which there's other than the bubble wrap that
- 12:27there's any hint of like, oh, something weird
- 12:29is that there is an obviously an older woman.
- 12:33who is coming on to Owen and makes very clear
- 12:35that I'm going to go have sex like with other
- 12:37people. But we definitely are supposed to think
- 12:40that she's gross. Yeah, we are supposed to think
- 12:43she's gross. And certainly not want him to have
- 12:46sex with her. No, because we want him to have
- 12:47sex with Ally. So the best part of this whole
- 12:50movie, and I'm sure you'll agree, is so at the
- 12:52end, I mean, like in true rom -com, you know.
- 12:55format these two wind up together and they go
- 13:00up to the lighthouse which is Ali's tattoo and
- 13:03they are like kissing and whatever and everyone
- 13:06in this theater is screaming "Do it do it" because
- 13:10they have like 10 more minutes before the night
- 13:12ends and then Owen says to Ali I think we should
- 13:15wait. I think we should wait. It was much like,
- 13:19remember the collective gasp when we saw Wuthering
- 13:22Heights? This was the collective groan. We were
- 13:24all like, oh my god. Are you kidding? I actually
- 13:29thought it was a joke. He was like, let's get
- 13:31to know each other. Let's get to know each other.
- 13:33For a year. We're gonna wait for a year. For
- 13:35a year. A year. And then they do. They do. And
- 13:38then, oh we haven't even talked about the weird,
- 13:40the weird ass. Okay, so there's this 12 year
- 13:42old kid in this movie. 12. They say, specifically,
- 13:4612. Who is kind of peering into these hookups
- 13:50with these other people, and he is in the final
- 13:52scene where Allie and Owen actually do have sex,
- 13:56which we don't see on screen, but this random
- 13:59kid is there. Is there. And, so what's so funny
- 14:02is that you have this juxtaposition of this incredibly
- 14:05sort of conservative view of the adult sexuality,
- 14:09but then this The 12 year old is saying the most
- 14:12vulgar, obscene, obscene thing. The 12 year old
- 14:16says to one of the female adults, sit on my face.
- 14:20I mean it's mind blowing. It is mind blowing.
- 14:22Where it's like what mind came up with both.
- 14:24And that's supposed to be funny. And it's supposed
- 14:25to be funny. And then yeah, so as you say to
- 14:28them, then the kid randomly is in their apartment.
- 14:31to call the cops or like child protective services
- 14:35here. Like who is his kids even parent or we
- 14:38don't even know and he's just like I'm so and
- 14:40we don't really get anything on the age limit
- 14:43for doing this. So he's like I want to get laid
- 14:46too and you're like you're 12. It's so gross.
- 14:49And it's like again what a totally bizarre idea
- 14:52of human but but I do think and I'm guessing
- 14:55that you will agree with me is that that to me
- 14:58also though was a perfect snapshot of Gen Z and
- 15:02now Gen Alpha sexuality, right? Where it's basically
- 15:04this like overload of like porn and like disgustingness,
- 15:09but then they're not actually doing it in real
- 15:11life. So it's like that was that pretty much
- 15:13summed it up, right? The 12 year old vulgar sit
- 15:15on my face kid and this unbelievable like, well,
- 15:18we need to wait a full year to like do it. And
- 15:21it was just for Gen Xers. It was just this. Totally
- 15:25upside down. The other thing that it was totally
- 15:27stupid on, and we talked about this, is contraception.
- 15:30It's like everyone's running around for a rubber
- 15:32and you're like, okay. Just what? Why? Something.
- 15:35You have one night, right? And everywhere's sold
- 15:39out and they're like pulling out like gloves
- 15:42and who knows what, okay? But nobody has any
- 15:46other sense of contraception. Nothing. And it
- 15:49is just the most bizarre world. It is. And nobody
- 15:52even bought them ahead of time. No, nobody even
- 15:54is like prepared for this one. You know, unlike
- 15:56in Porky's where they put them in the wallet,
- 15:58right? The classic, I have one in the wallet.
- 16:00Nobody had done this. Or like the guys that have
- 16:02like, you know, Sex and the City, Kim Cattrall,
- 16:04always walking around with like 30 ,000 condoms
- 16:06in her bag. She gets like, yeah, arrested. And
- 16:09in Abu Dhabi for having the condoms, right? Nobody's
- 16:13on the pill. Nobody, and something else of course,
- 16:16like there's no indication, I mean obviously
- 16:18of like sexually transmitted diseases because
- 16:21that, which is actually kind of funny because
- 16:22that would fit, because certainly the whole idea,
- 16:25right, is that sex is something super dangerous
- 16:26and it is to be avoided. And this isn't about
- 16:29like population control, they never tell you
- 16:32why they're doing this. They never tell you why.
- 16:34No, it's totally so contrived and just so weird.
- 16:38It is weird. It is weird. And the other thing
- 16:42is that nothing else like sex adjacent is like
- 16:47off the table either. They don't talk about like
- 16:51pornography. They don't talk about like, they're
- 16:53just like, it's just like the most traditional,
- 16:56you know, just penetrative sex that's outlawed.
- 16:58And it's just so bizarre. Like whoever wrote
- 17:01this, I don't know. It's so, again, and again
- 17:04with the kid, it just, it makes no consistent.
- 17:06Makes no sense. Although I will say, I mean I
- 17:10was wondering, and I might have mentioned this
- 17:11before, with the 12 -year -old boy who is super
- 17:13vulgar, I was reminded, since I've basically
- 17:16committed 40 -Year -Old Virgin to memory, and
- 17:19if you remember 40 -year -old - Virgin, there's
- 17:21the scene where he goes to the Planned Parenthood
- 17:24with his girlfriend's daughter to get some information.
- 17:28And there's a kid there, a young kid who keeps
- 17:31bragging about how much he's getting laid. And
- 17:33basically, and his dad says something like, you
- 17:35know, shut up Seth, we went to temple on Friday
- 17:37night after the kids like, you know, I just like
- 17:39banged so many people. And I was like, okay,
- 17:41again, to the writer of the film, like say, oh,
- 17:43that was so funny and amusing to see a super
- 17:45young kid making like obscene comments like that.
- 17:48I want that in my movie. without, of course,
- 17:50a very different, you know, sexual ethics than
- 17:53Forty Year Old Virgin. It's really not. No one needs
- 17:56to see that. So, there apparently was sex in
- 18:00this film, although we didn't see it. So that's
- 18:02pretty much it in One Night Only. Not recommended,
- 18:05but again, the sexual ethics of the film itself
- 18:07were fascinating. Yes. Definitely. It's a great
- 18:11film to talk about, but maybe not watch. But
- 18:14maybe not watch. So that made us go down the
- 18:17rabbit hole of other movies that both have the
- 18:20sort of one night sex hijinks theme or what happens
- 18:27when you have sex and it's either forbidden or
- 18:30there are consequences or it's being regulated
- 18:33or something like that. So Christine came up
- 18:35with us both watching It Follows, which she was
- 18:39scared of. Because I don't like horror movies.
- 18:40She doesn't like horror movies. So we watched
- 18:43it together at my house in broad daylight, which
- 18:44was our compromise, okay? It's not scary at all.
- 18:48It's not. I have to admit that. And really any
- 18:51episode of like most streaming television is
- 18:54scarier. But we watched It Follows, which I had
- 18:58never seen, she had never seen. And while it's
- 19:01not a sex comedy, it's definitely about these
- 19:05same themes and raises a lot of these similar
- 19:08questions. So the premise of this one, which
- 19:11took me a little while to kind of wrap my head
- 19:13around. It is another difficult concept. It is,
- 19:16really, seriously. It's a head -scratcher. Another
- 19:18one that raises the questions. Okay, so somebody,
- 19:23a person has sex and they then become This the
- 19:30target of it and this entity that can occupy
- 19:34demonic entity that can be looked like different
- 19:37bodies look like your mom could look like your
- 19:39sister could look whatever and comes after you
- 19:41in a very, very slow manner to kill you. And
- 19:45the only way that you can get rid of having this
- 19:48demonic entity. get away from you is to have
- 19:51sex with someone else and pass it on. But here's
- 19:54the catcher. If the demonic entity kills you,
- 19:59then it goes back to the person that before gave
- 20:02it to you, gave it to you by having sex with
- 20:04you. So logically, one would think and if it
- 20:07were me, as I told my partner, if this if somebody
- 20:11gave this to me, I would just go into like a
- 20:14bar with like, you know. 20 guys and spread it
- 20:18around and yeah totally yeah so that you would
- 20:22just be able to have this demonic thing following
- 20:2520 people and right just and and and i guess
- 20:29it would be away from me And Lizzie killed the
- 20:3120 people and then came back to me. Yes, but
- 20:33it would take some time. It would take some time.
- 20:36And if the 20 people had had sex with other people,
- 20:39it's like a line of succession in the British
- 20:41Royal Family. When you add more people, everybody
- 20:44else drops down. Totally. So you would think
- 20:46that this is what this movie is about, but it's
- 20:48not. But it's not. It's about this friend group.
- 20:52So this girl and what's her name? Jay? Jay. This
- 20:58girl Jay has sex with this guy, whatever. She
- 21:00gets the, she... He passes it on to her. He passes
- 21:04it on to her. The entity. The entity. And then
- 21:06her friend group is trying to help her get rid
- 21:10of it. Yes. So we have kind of like sort of Goonies
- 21:14it. Stand by me. Stand by me. I mean, exactly
- 21:17that kind of sort of like model of like the friend
- 21:19group. We're all going to kind of battle this
- 21:20together. Yes. Definitely Stephen King. And two
- 21:23of the guys are into Jay. Yes. But and so there's
- 21:27an ethical question of whether she actually wants
- 21:30to have sex with guys who like her and who are
- 21:32her friends who will then of course have this
- 21:35it thing following them. And we don't know. why
- 21:39the it thing is following. We know how the original
- 21:43guy that she has sex with got it, like a one
- 21:45night stand or whatever, but we don't know the
- 21:48origin story, basically. No, no, no. And maybe,
- 21:50because they aren't making a sequel, so actually
- 21:52maybe they will explain that in the sequel. Let's
- 21:54hope so. Let's hope so. Because I have a lot
- 21:57of questions. It was a lot of questions, a lot
- 21:59of questions. But the film is actually kind of
- 22:03a downer, and we were kind of going, well, we
- 22:06were kind of going back and forth about where
- 22:07it was and I eventually guessed Detroit and I
- 22:11was right. Because it absolutely is this kind
- 22:14of just decaying city, Midwestern kind of these
- 22:18houses that just look, you know, like junky.
- 22:21But it's also set in the 70s or 80s. Yes, it's
- 22:25very unclear because they have - The cars are
- 22:27not - The cars look 70s, 80s, but then we have
- 22:30like one of the friends is reading this kind
- 22:33of birth control pill kindle, which is like so
- 22:36weird, whatever that was supposed to be. And
- 22:38so we do, but it is weirdly set. And so what
- 22:44is interesting about it, and I do think this,
- 22:47is obviously what the writer -director was going
- 22:50for, is that obviously the entity can stand for
- 22:53so many different things. Whether it's shame,
- 22:56or regret, or again a sexually transmitted disease,
- 23:00AIDS more specifically. That is, and in some
- 23:04ways, I mean, it's not particularly subtle. No.
- 23:06Right. Just in terms of like this thing that
- 23:08you had sex and now you are going to die. You
- 23:10will pay for it. You will pay for it. And I do,
- 23:13I mean, we talked about there are all of these
- 23:14different ways in which different components
- 23:17of the ethics could have been fleshed out. And
- 23:19one scene that Lauren and I talked a lot about
- 23:21is there's a scene where Jay, again, the entity
- 23:24has been following her. She has had sex with
- 23:27one of these friends. Also, I don't know if we've
- 23:29told. the listener, she's the only one that can
- 23:31see the entity. So the entity, it's sort of like
- 23:34Hollow Man. Like, you know, so her friends cannot
- 23:38see the demon or whatever. She's the only one
- 23:41that can see it. Which can be kind of slapsticky,
- 23:43actually, in not an ideal way. Sort of like,
- 23:45where is he? Where is he? Throwing a sheet on
- 23:47his head and they're, you know, trying to figure
- 23:49out where, and they're, point, point. You know,
- 23:51it's kind of silly. It is kind of silly. But
- 23:53then we also have moments where, for example,
- 23:55we see the character Greg, who does die. after
- 23:59having sex with her and there's this horrible
- 24:00scene where basically the entity takes the shape
- 24:03of his mother and who then has sex with him and
- 24:05kills him. I mean it's just like yes it's awful
- 24:08it was really really awful and so you do it's
- 24:10it's a very strange juxtaposition but a scene
- 24:13that Lauren and I talked a lot about after Greg
- 24:15has died she decides so she's next again right
- 24:20and so she sees three men out in what looks to
- 24:23be Lake Michigan in a boat and she very clearly
- 24:26sort of swims out to them. And then the next
- 24:29time we see her, she is soaking wet in her car.
- 24:32So we don't know, as viewers, did she have sex
- 24:34with all three of them? Did she have sex with
- 24:36one of them? Or none of them. Or none of them.
- 24:38And the only thing we know is that then the entity
- 24:41does start following her again. So either she
- 24:43didn't sleep with them, or she did, and all three
- 24:46of them are already dead. Or it doesn't matter.
- 24:48Or it doesn't matter. Or it doesn't matter. I'm
- 24:50like the first guy to sell, but they've got the
- 24:51rules wrong. I mean the other thing is, the only
- 24:56person who tells her the quote rules, right,
- 24:59is that one guy. So we don't know whether he
- 25:02fully understands that either. Yeah, that's true.
- 25:03That's a good point. Maybe it doesn't even matter
- 25:06if you sleep with more people, maybe you're always
- 25:07going to be followed around. Yeah, that's true.
- 25:09Because what we do also see is, spoiler alert,
- 25:12at the end of the film, the sort of very sweet
- 25:15boy who has had a crush on her since childhood,
- 25:18she does have sex with him. And again, as we
- 25:21said, like the ethics are really complicated.
- 25:23She seems a little too willing, I think, to have
- 25:26sex with these... friends that she cares about.
- 25:29Although the one friend it seemed like you know
- 25:31because she was in the hospital and like seriously
- 25:34like hospitalized with her arm in a cast and
- 25:36like barely mobile and he comes in and it seems
- 25:39like he cares about her and he's just like it's
- 25:41just like okay like let's see what happens. The
- 25:44other one you know, with the guy who is, like,
- 25:47really in love with her and, you know, again,
- 25:50obsessing about her since childhood, she is very,
- 25:53you know, she's completely by the end into that.
- 25:56And he had said to her a couple of times in the
- 25:58movie, like, I'm up for this. I'll take the risk.
- 26:00I'll take the risk for you. And she's like, no,
- 26:03no, no. And then finally, I guess to see if they
- 26:06have because before that, they think that they
- 26:09have killed the entity. But we don't know if
- 26:13they really have or not. Or if they just killed
- 26:15one in life. Or they just killed one. And so
- 26:17what we see at the end, actually what seems to
- 26:19make a great deal of sense, I hate to say it,
- 26:22is that we see him driving past prostitutes.
- 26:24Right. In Detroit. It does make a lot of sense.
- 26:27But then what is confusing is that he doesn't
- 26:29do anything with them. Not that we see on screen,
- 26:32but I think the intimation, yes, is supposed
- 26:34to be either he has or that's the plan. But what
- 26:39confuses it is that at the very end, we do see
- 26:42them being followed from a distance by someone.
- 26:45And so it's like, okay, did he not have sex with
- 26:47the prostitutes? Which again, would be a really
- 26:49smart strategy. So there really is, I think again,
- 26:54in a very Stephen King -esque way, there's no
- 26:56real resolution. Right now, because they don't
- 26:59even know how they could even kill the entity
- 27:00in the first place. Yeah. But again, this is
- 27:03like where it starts to get kind of crazy for
- 27:05me because I'm just like, OK, again, the most
- 27:07logical solution to this problem. No one ever
- 27:10does that. Because the plot point is an interesting
- 27:13great story of the kids together and then they
- 27:17are teenagers. I mean, yes She seems to be going
- 27:19to like community college or something, right?
- 27:22Yeah, you know, they're young people. What? Yeah,
- 27:24they're 20 and so it's it's kind of like yes
- 27:27the easy solution to this wouldn't have made
- 27:29this a movie but it's also like stupid, because
- 27:35yeah, I mean, while it's not like great to think
- 27:37about this woman like going out and having sex
- 27:39with 50 people that would save her life. That
- 27:41would. Yes, because basically we would then have
- 27:44a sort of Ponzi scheme of sex deaths. Right.
- 27:47Because all of those people would then basically
- 27:50be having sex with other people. Especially if
- 27:52she told them, oh, you're it. Like after an interview,
- 27:56hey, somebody's going to come and try to kill
- 27:58you now. So you need to go like find this other
- 28:00person. Yes. Like immediately. But it is, I mean,
- 28:03it really, I do think it would have been, I mean,
- 28:05I don't have any interest in seeing it again,
- 28:07certainly. But I think - Although you can see
- 28:09it on your own. I could, but I mean, you know
- 28:12it's not scary. It actually also reminded me
- 28:14of like living in South Bend, you know, that
- 28:16same kind of like, you know, the kind of like
- 28:19depressing kind of, again, decaying vibe. Sorry,
- 28:22South Bend. No. But I do wish that they had spent
- 28:25more time on the ethics of it. No, agree. Because
- 28:29it really isn't discussed a lot. And I just,
- 28:34but, but. It is interesting to see the film came
- 28:37out in 2014 and so what can we call
- 28:41it a millennial film sort of a millennial sexual
- 28:44ethics because this also much like one night
- 28:47only right it is an unbelievably conservative
- 28:50film in terms of sexual ethics. Other than just
- 28:53saying well okay i need to go have sex with other
- 28:55people in order to get rid of this thing that
- 28:58i have now. Well, it's trying to say I'm trying
- 29:02to preserve my meaningful relationships and also
- 29:05not get killed. Yes. And it's kind of like, well,
- 29:09but the other thing is it has that we talked
- 29:11about this like old trope of these like slowly
- 29:14moving zombies. I mean, the idea that any of
- 29:19these pretty fit young kids couldn't outrun these
- 29:24zombies. I mean is and they don't like fly or
- 29:28ship shift around or you know jumper they just
- 29:31they just are like. But that's of course I mean.
- 29:35In a sense kind of the the fact that so often
- 29:38when we see them they look weird and creepy that.
- 29:43actually counterproductive. Because again, the
- 29:45shocking, awful death is the mom, right? And
- 29:48you think that actually, if the entity wanted
- 29:50to really like kill these people, it actually
- 29:52makes more sense to be like, I'm gonna look like
- 29:54the postman, right? As opposed to like, I'm going
- 29:56to look like an old woman who just escaped from
- 29:58a nursing home. You know, the entity really needed
- 30:01to sort of think that through, I think a little
- 30:03bit more. Because so often, it's not creatures
- 30:05who look familiar, right? It is. people, bodies
- 30:09that are themselves decaying, right? Again, sort
- 30:12of like who look ill, who look dead. And a lot,
- 30:14but they're naked a lot of the time. And they're
- 30:16naked a lot of the time. I mean, it's like when
- 30:17that guy's mom who's like, you know, it was so
- 30:20awful. It was so awful. It was so awful. It was
- 30:24so. That was the worst, worst, worst moment in
- 30:28that. And but what was interesting about that
- 30:30is that he was the skeptic. Right. He's the one
- 30:32who's like, oh, this isn't really happening.
- 30:34And you know, I'm going to be fine. And you know,
- 30:37nothing has come after me yet. And so that really
- 30:39was very good. But if you see your mom, like
- 30:41with some blood trickling down her head with
- 30:43her boob hanging out, you might think, hmm, is
- 30:46this really my mom? Yeah. You might, you might.
- 30:50But again, but he had not seen an entity yet,
- 30:53right? That's the other thing, right? Because
- 30:54he had never seen, this is the first one that
- 30:56he sees. And so he has no conception, right,
- 30:58of the ones that Jay has been seeing. So it is
- 31:01an interesting film in that it's don't have sex
- 31:04with people, but then you need to have sex with
- 31:07people, which was... Or you need to think about
- 31:11whether you just want to die. Yeah, yeah. But
- 31:14no, that was just, but again, it was interesting.
- 31:17I'm glad that we watched it. I have no interest
- 31:19in seeing it again. But will we see the sequel?
- 31:22I don't know. I don't know. I mean, if they explain
- 31:25where the entity actually came from. Well, now
- 31:27I kind of want to know. I mean, I don't know
- 31:29if I want to watch that girl again. Just read
- 31:30the Wikipedia. Okay. All right. I'll see where
- 31:34I am in life when that comes out. But I was also
- 31:38trying to think, okay. I meant to pay $4 to rent
- 31:41this one. I owe you $2, by the way. I owe you
- 31:45$2. I don't know if I want to pay another $4
- 31:47to rent the next one. Well, maybe it'll be fantastic.
- 31:50I don't know. Maybe it will be. did look at the
- 31:53cast but um but I do I do wonder because in some
- 31:57ways it's like oh it's so not 80s but then it's
- 32:00like well you know I mean I guess you could argue
- 32:02that it follows is kind of sharing that whole
- 32:0580s horror yeah the people right who have sex
- 32:07are the ones who die and obviously Halloween
- 32:09being the perfect example of that right where
- 32:12it's like the teenagers who basically are like
- 32:14lustful and screw they're the ones who die and
- 32:16that's of course made fun of in Scream yes yeah
- 32:19yeah yeah um and So, it's funny that in a post
- 32:23-Scream world, this would be made in some ways.
- 32:27Because it's precisely the kind of - Jamie from
- 32:29Scream, or not Jamie Kennedy, but that character.
- 32:31Yeah, I know you're talking about the Skeetal
- 32:33- Yeah. No. Oh, no, no. Jamie Kennedy. Oh, Jamie
- 32:35Kennedy. Okay, yeah. I don't know what his name
- 32:37would be. Yeah, I don't know. But anyway, yes,
- 32:39the kind of person that those like meta film
- 32:41horror guys would have been like, It's interesting
- 32:46that that kind of straight up, you have sex,
- 32:49you die is coming back in a post -screen world.
- 32:52Yes, but in a very, again, kind of like weird
- 32:56and depressing way. Not that the first version
- 32:58wasn't depressing, but do you know what I mean?
- 32:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was just so... I don't know.
- 33:02And that's why, again, I do wonder, and then
- 33:04we can move on. I do wonder, as I said when we
- 33:06were watching it, like I wonder if it is the
- 33:08case that the whole sort of like late 70s, early
- 33:1080s kind of feel isn't just harkening back to
- 33:13some sort of John Carpenter, you know, Halloween
- 33:15world, but that it is very specifically like
- 33:19a pre -AIDS world. And who knows? Who knows?
- 33:23Who knows? And again, maybe the sequel will be
- 33:26incredible and we'll be like, oh my God, that
- 33:28sequel sounds amazing. I doubt it. I doubt it.
- 33:31I doubt it. But, you know, who knows? Knowing
- 33:34us, I mean, we really won't watch anything. As
- 33:36our next films prove. Now I'm going to preface
- 33:39this by saying we chose two movies that won both
- 33:44of us as, you know, teenagers saw multiple times
- 33:49and loved, and thought this movie was great.
- 33:53And so the rewatch, like I was looking forward
- 33:55to the rewatch. The other, I think we were both
- 33:57under the impression that this was an awesome
- 34:00treasure. Hilarious. And hilarious that for some
- 34:03reason we hadn't seen the whole way through at
- 34:06least. And that we were going to love these movies.
- 34:09And these two movies are Bachelor Party. movies
- 34:13from the 80s, from the early 80s, and Porky's.
- 34:16And we were under some spell. Delusion. Delusion.
- 34:21That we were going to be revisiting these gems
- 34:24of our childhood. Side splitting. Okay. Laugh
- 34:29riots. All right. So let me tell you something,
- 34:33listeners. If I were to have heard that Porky's
- 34:38is a central commentary on anti -Semitism, I
- 34:43would have never believed it, but it is! Porky's
- 34:48is more about anti -Semitism than it is about
- 34:52anything else, including sex. Naked girls in
- 34:54the shower. And naked girls in the shower. And
- 34:56it is really anti -Semitism. The message of Porky's
- 35:00is Jews are great. Jews are the heroes. Yes.
- 35:03Yes, these are great. It is mind blowing. It
- 35:07was unbelievable. And so again, for those of
- 35:12you who don't remember Porky's or maybe just
- 35:14remember the shower scene, Porky's takes place
- 35:16in what we thought was the 50s. I would say 1955.
- 35:23That's what I landed on. Because we have a reference
- 35:25to Dwight Eisenhower as president. So I'm going
- 35:27with 1955. And guys in high school who, of course,
- 35:33are 30 or 40 plus in real life. It's like stalker
- 35:37chanting and this. And they're super horny. And
- 35:40they just want to have sex. And one of them is
- 35:42a virgin. And one of them is a virgin. And they
- 35:45just want to get laid. All the time. All the
- 35:48time. And that's pretty much... And look at naked
- 35:50girls. That's pretty much the plot. Not that
- 35:52there's anything wrong with that. No, because
- 35:53there isn't. There isn't. There's nothing wrong
- 35:55with that. No, but what... this then turns into
- 35:59is this like commentary on the Everglades and
- 36:04like class and police corruption and like domestic
- 36:10child abuse and again anti -semitism and so one
- 36:16of the characters is this oh and racism yeah
- 36:19and racism anti -black racism yes yes it was
- 36:22all who knew all the boxes checked The only thing
- 36:27that didn't show up was nuclear war. Right. Everything
- 36:30else. Environment. Okay. The environment I don't
- 36:35think was mentioned. So these guys are, I mean,
- 36:39of course they all want to get laid and Porky's
- 36:42is this, you know, bar slash, you know, road
- 36:46house, strip club, whatever, brothel. And they
- 36:51want to go there and they want to, you know,
- 36:53have sex with the women there. and Porky, you
- 36:57know, kind of cons them, steals their money,
- 37:00kicks them out, humiliates them, totally humiliates
- 37:04them, they fall into the lake, whatever, the
- 37:06police come. So that's the Porkies of it. But
- 37:10the real story is that one of the guys in the
- 37:14group, and these guys are, we kind of talked
- 37:17about this, indistinguishable from one another.
- 37:19Just too many of them. And there's a whole lot
- 37:21of them. Yes. And so there's this one guy who
- 37:24is an anti -Semite and several episodes where
- 37:28other guys are like, well, do you really want
- 37:32to say those things? And then they say to the
- 37:33Jewish guy, well, but he's still our friend.
- 37:36And then they have a fight. And then the guy
- 37:38loses to the Jewish guy. And then the guy's father
- 37:41beats him up because he lost to the Jewish guy.
- 37:43Because he lost to the Jewish guy. And the guy's
- 37:45father had just gotten out of prison and was
- 37:47the child abuser. Yes, totally. And then the
- 37:51guy with this awakening, like this like kumbaya
- 37:54awakening, he befriends the Jewish guy, and then
- 37:58he's like, you know, where there really is a
- 38:00Semitic is out in Porky's. And it's just like,
- 38:03you might want to change your name when you go
- 38:05there. It is absolutely crazy. So while all of
- 38:10this is happening. There are these episodes,
- 38:13which I guess the film is most famous for, where
- 38:15the guys are peeping Toms and they want to look
- 38:18in on the girls they go to high school with in
- 38:21the shower. And they do, but the girls don't
- 38:25really care. And once they find out the guys
- 38:28are there, they're just like, oh my god, you
- 38:29guys. So gross. It's just the whole thing. Okay,
- 38:33but here's the one reason maybe to watch Porky's,
- 38:36but then maybe just that part. So our girl Kim
- 38:39Cattrall is in it. Looks beautiful. She's a brunette.
- 38:43It looks great. She looks great. She is the only
- 38:46person in the movie who we see on screen having
- 38:48sex. Yes. Which is hilarious. I have to interject.
- 38:52Yes. With Boyd Gaines, who is the... boyfriend
- 38:57slash fiance of Allison in The Sure Thing. Oh
- 39:01my god. Jason, a law student. That is Boyd Gaines.
- 39:05Isn't that amazing? Are you serious? So he's
- 39:06playing like a high school coach in 1981 and
- 39:09then he's basically like a college student four
- 39:11years later. That is Boyd Gaines. Isn't that
- 39:13crazy? Crazy. Crazy. So I'm glad that he actually
- 39:16got a lot of sex in Porky's because of course
- 39:18he doesn't get it in The Sure Thing. Correct.
- 39:20So, well, we don't know about a lot. Just that
- 39:22episode. True. With Kim Katra. Yes. Kim Cattrall,
- 39:28but that's all we see of her. But she does look
- 39:30great and she's doing a thing. You really can
- 39:36imagine someone watching her have that orgasm
- 39:39in Porky's and saying she absolutely needs to
- 39:42be in sexist. Absolutely. That's the audition
- 39:44tape. It is. Right there, the orgasm. It is.
- 39:46It's incredible. It is. It's incredible. What
- 39:49else do we have to say about Porky's? Well, I
- 39:51think it is important for us to remind our listeners
- 39:54that it was a super smash hit. It was so successful,
- 39:59right? One of these films that is made for like
- 40:02nothing and then makes like a gazillion dollars.
- 40:04So many sequels. So many sequels. Like over and
- 40:07over. Yes, which is just unbelievable. And one
- 40:09thing that we talked about that is so interesting
- 40:12about it, it really is this kind of almost perverted
- 40:16sort of American graffiti. on the one hand, and
- 40:19kind of like a high school sex version of Animal
- 40:21House, sort of on the other. And you really,
- 40:24I hadn't, not having sort of sat down and watched
- 40:26it before, I didn't realize that. But in a sense,
- 40:29you can say, okay, these two films, then. create
- 40:32all of these sex comedies throughout the 80s.
- 40:34And again, I never in any way would say, oh,
- 40:37American Graffiti is kind of like the grandfather
- 40:38of sex comedies. Do you know what I mean? In
- 40:40Animal House, it's easier to see, but Animal
- 40:43House isn't particularly interested in sex. poor
- 40:49stepchild to those movies. It's such a bad movie.
- 40:52It's the B minus version. It's like the B side.
- 40:56It's so bad. And it's like everything about it,
- 41:00like the production quality, the cost, I mean,
- 41:03everything is like really rough. Yes. And we
- 41:06talked about how the, it doesn't consistently
- 41:09look like 1955. No. Right. I mean, we have the
- 41:11kind of the needle drops, which tell us that
- 41:13where it's like, oh, okay, we're listening to,
- 41:14you know, "Maybelline" or whatever. But some of
- 41:17the girls have clear perms. Some of the boys
- 41:20have their feathered hair. And everyone talks
- 41:23like they talk in the 80s. Everybody has a vulgarity.
- 41:28And all the slang is 80s. I mean, nobody is speaking
- 41:31beach blanket bingo or something like that. These
- 41:37are kids in the 80s. Yes, like where the boys
- 41:39are. Where the boys are. We don't have any kind
- 41:41of... Yes. No, but it's not like... It's like
- 41:43we're science guys. No, absolutely. It talks
- 41:46like that. Absolutely. So yeah, I mean, they're
- 41:50just like, the whole thing is just so crazy.
- 41:54And so what's crazy with this and Bachelor Party,
- 41:56which we'll talk about in a second, is that we
- 41:59just couldn't understand why we liked it to be,
- 42:01or why we were like, this was a great movie.
- 42:03We can't wait to watch it again. And you know,
- 42:05it has this lore. So funny. So funny. So not
- 42:09funny. So not funny. And also like, And, you
- 42:13know, obviously we were young when this came
- 42:15out. So a lot of adult things or sex things are
- 42:18funny. And that can be explained away, but some
- 42:20of it is truly disturbing. And I'm just like,
- 42:23how did I think that that was funny as a kid?
- 42:27The gym teacher. The gym teacher pulling on the
- 42:29high school boy's penis. Yes. Yes. Who, of course,
- 42:32looks older than she does. Yes. So that makes
- 42:35it better. I mean, honestly, if you were pulling
- 42:37on the 12 -year -old from the other movie, that
- 42:40would be awful. But it's because the guy is the
- 42:44same age as the film teacher. Yes. So you're
- 42:47like, but it's so gross. It is gross. And we
- 42:50talked about the, there's a scene where sort
- 42:52of the whole group of boys, they're like standing
- 42:54there naked for this lineup where this like hooker
- 42:56examines them. And it just, it was really sort
- 42:59of creepy. And yeah, it just, I do wonder, you
- 43:05know, thinking about it now. because it actually
- 43:07wasn't i mean i guess what animal house comes
- 43:09out in 1978 and i guess you can imagine a world
- 43:12and saying like oh okay like college age people
- 43:15will want to see this right but i think what
- 43:18is so strange is that then in effect it did kind
- 43:21of sink down age -wise do you know what i mean
- 43:23in terms of the audience and kind of what it
- 43:25was talking about? I don't know. I don't know.
- 43:27Yeah. It just, again, it doesn't age. And Jim
- 43:30and I were talking, just because we were talking
- 43:31about tennis, we were talking about Caddyshack.
- 43:32Oh yeah, yeah. And like, I mean, Caddyshack another,
- 43:35but Caddyshack is still funny. Yeah. I mean,
- 43:38at least I hope so. Yes, it is. But the last
- 43:41time I've seen Caddyshack, because it's always
- 43:42on cable, things like that, like it's funny.
- 43:44I mean, it's always going to be funny. This just,
- 43:47and also because it doesn't have any like stars
- 43:50in it, it doesn't have any good acting in it.
- 43:53It's just, ugh. All right, let's move on. Speaking
- 43:56of good actors. So we're going to go to Bachelor
- 43:58Party and I'm going to say Tom Hanks, who I am
- 44:02a huge Tom Hanks fan. I think he's great, but
- 44:04he's particularly great in this because it's
- 44:07so bad. And he is the... Well, he's not elevating
- 44:11it. No, he's making it watchable. He's making
- 44:14it tolerable. Tom Hanks is so sweet and funny
- 44:19and raunchy and all of it in Bachelor Party.
- 44:22And he holds it together. but the rest of it
- 44:26is just a total train wreck. And again, you and
- 44:29I both remembered and we saw it so many times.
- 44:33It's amazing to me. It is like watching that
- 44:36again and just being like, yes, like, how is
- 44:39this funny? Nothing is funny. And again, it came
- 44:43up when I was a freshman in high school, I think.
- 44:47And so, I mean, obviously my standards for comedy
- 44:49were extremely low, but I just remembered again
- 44:52being like, hilarious. You know, we have the
- 44:56donkey. The donkey doing the coke is the funniest
- 45:01part. It is a great visual. Okay, but the rest
- 45:04of it is so bad. But like the Chippendale scene.
- 45:07I thought that was like hilarious. So for those
- 45:10of you again who need reminding. I mean, and
- 45:12the title says it all. And the reason we picked
- 45:14it is because it is this one night only parallel.
- 45:18Tom Hanks gets engaged to Tawny Catan, and he's
- 45:22this crazy, wild and crazy guy. Wild and crazy
- 45:26guy. Bus driver. He's a bus driver. His friends
- 45:28are just crazy guys. They don't want any commitment.
- 45:33They just want to go out and do whatever, have
- 45:35fun. And so he, when he gets engaged, of course,
- 45:38his friends want to throw him this insanely crazy
- 45:40bachelor party. And Tonika Tam's like, you know,
- 45:43no sex for you that night. No hookers. No hookers.
- 45:47Okay. And then she's also like, super, super
- 45:51waspy, rich, um, country club ish kind of person.
- 45:56And he is not. And he is not. And his father,
- 45:59her father hates him. And then there's this kind
- 46:01of like, you know, classic, like blonde preppy
- 46:04asshole, like garden variety, 1980s film character
- 46:08who used to date her and the father wants her
- 46:11to be with him and to break up her and Tom Hanks.
- 46:14and so hijinks ensue and the bachelor party starts
- 46:17and then she has her own bachelorette shower
- 46:21which starts out very prim but then gets so raunchy
- 46:25because you know the hookers show up there and
- 46:28then they go to a strip club and before you know
- 46:31it everyone's at the tom hanks bachelor party
- 46:34and so we have again over the course of a fairly
- 46:39tight amount of time. And it is very funny that
- 46:41by the time the bachelor party is over, it's
- 46:43broad daylight, and a movie theater is now showing
- 46:46like movies. But anyway, and so we have this
- 46:50super weird moment that again, was hilarious
- 46:52back in 1984, where her very conservative mother
- 46:55ends up basically like pulling on again, much
- 46:58like in parkies, penis pulling pulls on a man's
- 47:02penis, which has been put into a hot dog bun
- 47:04on purpose and put on a tray as kind of a practical
- 47:07joke by Tom Hanks's character. and Rick and his
- 47:11friends. And so... And when we saw the movie,
- 47:14we thought the mother was old. Yes, and she's
- 47:17probably like 45. Younger than us. But we thought
- 47:20the mother was old. We definitely thought the
- 47:22father was old. Both of them are like in all
- 47:25kinds of really... odd sexual positions throughout
- 47:28this whole movie. And her sister too. It's also
- 47:34this turn on these conservative people who are
- 47:37actually super wild and want to do these crazy
- 47:40things and you're just like, what? racist, it's
- 47:47homophobic, it's offensive to pretty much every
- 47:50minority group, and it's just, and which, you
- 47:53know, from the time, you know, we expect that
- 47:56from the 80s, but none of it's funny. I mean,
- 47:59it's, you know, none of it's even funny. I mean,
- 48:02even in a, like an offhanded way, it's just,
- 48:06it's not like airplane. It's not like you're,
- 48:08and that's, you know, the more that time goes
- 48:10by, the more I appreciate Airplane. It's like,
- 48:12it's just brilliant. It's just so funny. It's
- 48:15so funny. And this was, and I think maybe, I
- 48:18mean, cause of course there's no plot in Bachelor
- 48:20Party. And we talked about this, like literally
- 48:22there's no plot. The only kind of thing is like,
- 48:24well, okay. Will he, won't he? Will he, won't
- 48:25he? think he's going to because he's such a great
- 48:28guy. And he loves her so much. And he loves her
- 48:31so much. And it's so clear that he loves her
- 48:33so much. There's never any moment when they're
- 48:35together or even when he's with her family that
- 48:38you think, oh, he's going to be tempted and he's
- 48:40going to... Never. Never. Never. And so there's
- 48:43no real... And again, it's like, well, how much
- 48:44can the guy like Cole, sort of the preppy guy
- 48:46do? I mean, he ends up kind of kidnapping her,
- 48:48but it's like, okay, that's, you know, he's not
- 48:49going to like... forcibly marry her. And so there's
- 48:51no plot. And we do, I mean, much like in Porky's,
- 48:56right? We have the absolute trope of like, hookers
- 48:59are so fun, and they're so fun and sweet and
- 49:02like fun to party with. And they're always like
- 49:03taking their tops off, right? We even see like
- 49:05a vibrator, right? With the sort of girl on girl
- 49:09action. Girl on girl action, yeah. Hookers are
- 49:11fun. Hookers are fun, and apparently you actually
- 49:14never have to pay for them. At least in bachelor
- 49:17parties. And none of their pimps ever come after
- 49:20them either in this one. I mean, the one guy's
- 49:24like, I'm getting out of here once he sees the
- 49:25donkey. And now he's like, oh. Yes, the muscle
- 49:28sort of leaves too. So, but we do have, I mean,
- 49:32one thing I do want to point out about Bachelor
- 49:33Party, which I will say, back in 1984, shocked
- 49:36me then, and still shocks me now. And it's not
- 49:39the donkey snorting lots of cocaine. It seemed
- 49:42so weird to me that, like, we see Rick's brother,
- 49:46who is a doctor, right, we see his wife. And
- 49:49we hear Rick's brother basically say, you know,
- 49:52marriage is terrible and the first month is great,
- 49:54but then it's a friggin bore. And we have already
- 49:57seen Rick's sister -in -law at Chippendale's
- 50:01kind of like, you know, dancing with one of the
- 50:03strippers. Anyway, it was so shocking to me because
- 50:06the guy is sleeping with hookers. Right. Rick's
- 50:09brother is sleeping with hookers at the bachelor
- 50:11party. And so there's this one moment when someone
- 50:14comes to the party, nobody's there but Rick and
- 50:16Rick is like, oh, everybody's busy in the bedrooms.
- 50:19And we later see, we hear that his brother, yes,
- 50:21has been sleeping with hookers. And that, to
- 50:24me, was shocking. And again, I think remains
- 50:27so. And I don't really know why. But I think,
- 50:31and especially, again, I suppose... But I will
- 50:33say this also. I read, and tell me if I'm wrong,
- 50:36I read a little bit of Jewish coding in The Wife.
- 50:44Interesting. Interesting. And also read her as
- 50:46a little overweight. Yes. On attractive glasses.
- 50:49I mean, for like 80s standards, like, you know
- 50:53what I'm saying. Yes. Like, I mean, she's not
- 50:54Tawny Cattain. No. And she's not Tawny Kitaen's,
- 50:56like, hot, blonde, skinny friend. Correct. Or
- 51:00even her sister. Or even her sister. Or even
- 51:02that, like, weirdo who works with her at the
- 51:04boutique, right, is supposed to be this very,
- 51:05like, valley girl, sort of 80s weirdo. The sister
- 51:08-in -law is definitely a standout. And she's
- 51:11also a doctor. To me, I read this as like an
- 51:14anti -feminist, like, and maybe anti -feminist.
- 51:17And maybe I'm going a little too far on that,
- 51:20but she's the only woman we know that has, she's
- 51:22like, I'm a doctor. And she says it a bunch of
- 51:25times. I mean, she and her husband are both doctors
- 51:27in that practice. And although Tom Hanks can
- 51:32run around on the chairs and like disturb, it's
- 51:35just so crazy. I did read it as like, this is
- 51:39a woman with a profession and they're gonna make
- 51:42her look ridiculous. And I sort of read it that
- 51:45way. Well that, okay, that's interesting. I would
- 51:47say the counterpoint is that we actually do get
- 51:51the sense from that Chippendale scene. I can't
- 51:53believe we're breaking this down. that like that
- 51:58she is sexually frustrated as well. Yes. Right.
- 52:00But that was interesting to me and then we're
- 52:02basically supposed to think well okay her husband
- 52:05is also this like total dud sexually right now
- 52:08she's here with this like hot guy and and of
- 52:11course he sees her do that when she kind of rips
- 52:14off the song with her mouth and you know so irate.
- 52:18But that was interesting to me because we do
- 52:21actually see her doing a similar kind of thing
- 52:24as her husband. We do. She just basically doesn't
- 52:26have sex with the Chippendales guy. No. Probably
- 52:28because the Chippendales dancer was probably
- 52:30gay. As Chippendales dancers traditionally were.
- 52:32Do you know what's interesting about these movies?
- 52:35I might be wrong, but no one is gay in any of
- 52:38them. Except for the lesbian in one and only
- 52:42who's like, yeah, we've just been doing it for
- 52:44years. Oh, y 'all don't know. What about the
- 52:46Marilyn Monroe? Oh, well, okay. I mean, yeah,
- 52:50because obviously, I mean, because that's the
- 52:52sort of thing is that. Well, I guess what I'm
- 52:55seeing is there's there's that supposed to be
- 52:57a joke. I mean, that goes with the whole like
- 53:00disclosure, you know, like, yeah, transphobic,
- 53:02blah, blah, blah, you know, 80s transphobia or
- 53:05however you think about it. But. There is, I
- 53:09don't expect 80s movies to be exploring gay sexuality
- 53:13in any real depth. Yes. Okay. I do not either.
- 53:16No. And actually, when I watched Clueless the
- 53:18other night, I was like, huh, like, this is interesting
- 53:22a little bit. I can't remember, is there a gay
- 53:24character in Clueless? Yeah, yeah, her friend
- 53:26Christian. Okay, I don't remember that at all.
- 53:28Oh, okay. Yes, yes, yes. Yeah, I remember that
- 53:30character. in the more modern movies and seeing
- 53:35the 2014 and then the one we just saw, there's
- 53:38like no mention of it at all. Oh, you're right.
- 53:42Really. But I think, I don't know, I mean, the
- 53:452014 one doesn't surprise me because I think
- 53:50that's only just because of the mechanics of
- 53:53the plot. I mean, it seems to me that that's
- 53:55the sort of thing where the writer director might
- 53:57have been like, OK, I mean, as with One Night
- 53:59Only, OK, how does this work, right? In terms
- 54:02of the the constraints that I have placed upon
- 54:04my characters and upon the action of the film.
- 54:07That makes some degree of sense to me. And I
- 54:09think in terms of like Porky's, and again, my
- 54:12bachelor party, but it's also, I mean, because
- 54:16Porky's is representing mid 1950s, right? Florida.
- 54:19And so it's like, okay. And I think that, but
- 54:22thinking of a film made in the early eighties,
- 54:24right? That to me is more, I mean, you and I
- 54:29haven't even discussed this film, I think, but.
- 54:31if you think about a film like Making Love with
- 54:33Harry Hamlin, which basically came out around
- 54:36that time, 1980, 1981. But the whole pose of
- 54:41that film was like a very serious film. Sure,
- 54:45sure. And even thinking of something like Cruising
- 54:47with Al Pacino, which certainly people have complained
- 54:50about over the years. But even that is intended
- 54:53to be like, there is this kind of like other
- 54:55sexual side. And I don't know. I don't know.
- 55:01Yeah, I think they're yeah, it just to me that
- 55:03would have just been a non -starter. Yeah, I
- 55:05just was but again, but I mean obviously cuz
- 55:07that's the thing is that the the sort of shorter
- 55:09friend, right? He does he does have sex with
- 55:12a man he does and however he doesn't realize
- 55:15it which is again defies reality right but then
- 55:19has the what is the conventional repulse yes
- 55:22you know yes um reaction to it yes and and we
- 55:26have the old like showers which again like was
- 55:28something that was like hilarious to audiences
- 55:30right i know in 1984 i know completely was i
- 55:33know I know. I miss, I know. But again, talk
- 55:37to youth, right, of like these hijinks were funny
- 55:40because I was just really young and I thought
- 55:43they were funny. I don't know why I thought they
- 55:44were funny, but I definitely did. Yes. No, again,
- 55:47I mean, that like hot dog thing was like... Yeah,
- 55:49that hot dog thing. Hilarious. We all thought
- 55:51that was funny. But we also, again, like I'm
- 55:54just thinking back to Carrie Shack, we also thought
- 55:55that the, whatever, the Tootsie Roll in the pool
- 55:58is funny. I still kind of think it is. But I
- 56:00still kind of think it is. So... um you know
- 56:03there's there's um all kinds of 80s stuff that
- 56:06you just don't know and christina and i did mention
- 56:08by the way listeners that for some reason mooning
- 56:11is now it's out of our culture which is probably
- 56:15a good thing it is a good thing but he was but
- 56:17all of these movies reminded us especially the
- 56:2080s movies of the prevalence of mooning mooning
- 56:23grease Yes. The short thing, as you remember.
- 56:26Yes. Yes. There are so many movies with mooning
- 56:29that, I mean, we would really need to do a deep
- 56:31dive. And there probably is a website where you
- 56:33could find like every movie with a mooning scene
- 56:37and where you can find it in the movie. And again,
- 56:39just not funny. No. It's not funny. It's not
- 56:42funny, although a lot of people thought it was
- 56:46back then. Yes. There were mooning scenes and
- 56:48you heard everyone laughing in the theater. Yes.
- 56:51And again, I'm not saying I was one of them,
- 56:53but people, that was a thing. That was a funny
- 56:57thing that people did. And I think, but maybe
- 57:00we need to put it in the same category as streaking,
- 57:06nudity in public, because of course people used
- 57:08to streak, right? There was that sort of fad
- 57:11and people thought that was hilarious. The very
- 57:14idea of nudity in public spaces. And so I think
- 57:18we can kind of. lump the mooning in with that.
- 57:21But I do think overall, because we're almost
- 57:23at our hour, it is, I mean, you and I have talked
- 57:26about this so much before, and I'm endlessly
- 57:28fascinated by it. Again, the sort of the open
- 57:31sexuality of film for our generation in a way
- 57:35that simply does not exist anymore. Does not
- 57:37exist. Does not exist. And it's just, again,
- 57:40endlessly fascinating to me. And that is why
- 57:42I'm glad that we watched Porky's, because as
- 57:45we talked about earlier, you really can see this
- 57:47kind of transition. right from like those 70s
- 57:50films that had naked boobs just because, you
- 57:53know, high drama. Right now we can do it. But
- 57:55the idea that then saying with Porky's, oh, but
- 57:58wait a minute, the boobs aren't going to be in
- 58:00some sort of like, you know, adult film about
- 58:02infidelity or whatever, you know, some Oscar
- 58:05bait. We're just going to put it in this like
- 58:06junk film. Right. And then of course, we get
- 58:09this like flood of sex comedies throughout the
- 58:1180s. Right. Right. And I don't know. We also
- 58:14get a lot of full nudity for women. Yes. Which,
- 58:18you know, you don't see a whole lot in movies
- 58:20now. Correct. Am I right about that? Yeah. And
- 58:23again, we saw partial nudity and sort of far
- 58:26away nudity and it follows. But again, it follows
- 58:28was still like 12 years ago. Right. And again,
- 58:32that was... There's no nudity in One Night Only.
- 58:34No. And not even like, I mean... Not even like
- 58:37a boob. Oh, wait, we saw his butt, right? Didn't
- 58:40we see like... What's -his -name's butt wants
- 58:43or something? I don't know. For a movie about
- 58:46people having sex in one night, there was no
- 58:48nudity. Oh, the guy she almost hooks up with.
- 58:50Don't we see him like we see his butt? When he's
- 58:52like running away. When he's like running away.
- 58:53I don't know. Yeah, but it was very like non
- 58:55-sex nudity. In these 80s movies, and I'm sure
- 58:59we could think of many more, there is a lot of
- 59:03full frontal nudity. And some of them just for
- 59:06no reason. For no reason. But I won't, you know,
- 59:09I will say we were talking before we started
- 59:10about how HBO just did a big dump of Tom Cruise
- 59:13movies. Right, right, right. And of course I,
- 59:16and what they have now, Risky Business, the
- 59:17greatest sex comedy ever made because it's a
- 59:21fantastic film. It is. And when you think that
- 59:23that came out only a couple of years after Porky's,
- 59:25right, and is seven million miles beyond it.
- 59:28But that is a film that actually dares to show
- 59:30us, in some degree of detail, a high schooler
- 59:34regularly having sex with a hooker. So we don't
- 59:36have kind of the grossness of Porky's, but we
- 59:39also don't have this kind of conservative idea
- 59:41of sexuality of the films that we just talked
- 59:43about. No, no, no, you're right. You're right.
- 59:45No, you're totally right. So the cultural shift
- 59:48is remarkable. And confusing. And confusing.
- 59:52And confusing. I certainly don't understand that.
- 59:55I think it's probably like, yeah, we had a lot
- 59:57of exposure to all of these sex comedies and
- 1:00:00all of this sex and all of this nudity, but I
- 1:00:02think we were all still pretty confused. Yeah.
- 1:00:08Well, on that note, Lauren, I think we have to
- 1:00:10be done. All right. Well, I hope you enjoy this
- 1:00:13episode, listeners. We are happy to be back with
- 1:00:16you. So excited about the second season. We are
- 1:00:18going to start thinking about our themes for
- 1:00:21the next episode and episodes to come. If you
- 1:00:24have any recommendations or requests. Happy to
- 1:00:26listen. We will not do the Odyssey. We will not.
- 1:00:30But again, not out of any kind of like... taste
- 1:00:34reasons, but just just why. Just why. But the
- 1:00:37Emmys are coming up too. Very exciting. So we
- 1:00:39might need a wrap up or, you know, some kind
- 1:00:42of Emmy review episode. So we'll think about
- 1:00:46it. But until then. Until then. Harpies out.
