- 0:45Speaker 3: You know, David Perrault is going to be here, and
- 0:48Speaker 3: super excited to talk to him and see what he's
- 0:50Speaker 3: got to say about how his life's going and just
- 0:53Speaker 3: ask him lots of questions about his history and background
- 0:57Speaker 3: and career and all of that.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So that'd be great.
- 1:01Speaker 1: It was a lot of fun talking talking with David.
- 1:04Speaker 1: We're going to start out with that interview, and then
- 1:06Speaker 1: on the back end we'll come back and talk about
- 1:09Speaker 1: some d Backs spring training updates. We'll talk the latest
- 1:11Speaker 1: on Meryl Kelly his status going into the season, as
- 1:15Speaker 1: well as some other standouts in camp. So we'll get
- 1:18Speaker 1: to that stick around on the back end of the show.
- 1:20Speaker 1: But once again we have a special guest joining us.
- 1:23Speaker 1: We're going to start out with that. So, without further ado,
- 1:26Speaker 1: here is our conversation with the freight train himself, d
- 1:30Speaker 1: Backs outfielder David Peralta. Well, if you've been a fan
- 1:34Speaker 1: of the Arizona Diamondbacks for any length of time, chances
- 1:37Speaker 1: are you're very familiar with the man who joins us now.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It is long time Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta. David, first
- 1:46Speaker 1: of all, thanks for hopping on the show. We really
- 1:48Speaker 1: appreciate it. And I also, of course have to say,
- 1:50Speaker 1: speaking on behalf of all Diamondbacks fans, congratulations on a
- 1:55Speaker 1: on a tremendous, tremendous career.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Thank you, guys, thank you for having me.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Thank you, it's awesome.
- 2:03Speaker 3: And just so I want to say welcome as well.
- 2:04Speaker 3: From my standpoint, it's just tremendous to get a chance
- 2:08Speaker 3: to talk to you again.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Thank you. I appreciate it.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So, David, I imagine this had to be. I know
- 2:15Speaker 1: there are there are many positives that come out of this. Right,
- 2:18Speaker 1: you get to spend more time with family and whatnot.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm sure you're looking forward to that, but I imagine this
- 2:22Speaker 1: is also difficult for you at the same time, having
- 2:26Speaker 1: played this game for so long, Just what are the
- 2:29Speaker 1: vibes right now in the Peralta household? How are you
- 2:32Speaker 1: feeling about all this?
- 2:34Speaker 5: Well, the vibees just been crazy and spending like full
- 2:37Speaker 5: time with the family with the kids being a normal
- 2:41Speaker 5: doubt twenty four to seven, which is great.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Then, you know, that's what I was looking for.
- 2:46Speaker 5: The decision to retire, Like you said, it's not easy.
- 2:51Speaker 5: It took me like a full year to think about it,
- 2:54Speaker 5: to ask around to its teammates who did the same thing,
- 2:59Speaker 5: and you know, talk a lot with my wife, and
- 3:02Speaker 5: we got a conclusion.
- 3:03Speaker 4: I told my wife like, hey, you guys sacrifice.
- 3:07Speaker 5: A lot for me, you know, going whatever and go,
- 3:10Speaker 5: you know and everything. Knowing that I was traveling a lot,
- 3:13Speaker 5: I wasn't spending a lot of time at home, and
- 3:16Speaker 5: now I think it's time for me to dedicate full
- 3:18Speaker 5: time for you guys, because you guys.
- 3:20Speaker 4: The service so and and we made that decision.
- 3:24Speaker 5: You know, it was it was It wasn't easy because
- 3:28Speaker 5: you know, you's I love baseball based with my life,
- 3:32Speaker 5: but I love my family too. And my family one
- 3:34Speaker 5: of what was the main reason they made the decision
- 3:38Speaker 5: to retire. I need to see grow my kids and
- 3:41Speaker 5: see them grow because the times goes really fast, so
- 3:45Speaker 5: I don't want to miss that time at all.
- 3:48Speaker 2: How many kids do you have and how old are
- 3:49Speaker 2: they now?
- 3:50Speaker 4: I have three kids.
- 3:51Speaker 5: I got two daughters and a boy so eight five
- 3:57Speaker 5: and a little one.
- 3:58Speaker 4: The boys is two years old.
- 4:00Speaker 1: H Do any of them have your Do any of
- 4:03Speaker 1: them have your swing? Are you starting to notice any
- 4:05Speaker 1: any resemblance yet? On that phone?
- 4:07Speaker 5: Well, I'm a coach right now from my daughter's team.
- 4:12Speaker 5: She started playing this year, Uh, coach pitch softball and
- 4:17Speaker 5: she's getting better. You know, she's a lefty. She's a
- 4:20Speaker 5: right but she's swing lefty. I told her like, okay,
- 4:22Speaker 5: you're gonna swing lefty. My older daughter, she's playing t ball.
- 4:25Speaker 5: She love it. She's fire yourself. She's loving it. And well,
- 4:29Speaker 5: the little one, he's too little right now, he's two
- 4:31Speaker 5: years old. But he's going to be the prospect. Definitely,
- 4:34Speaker 5: he's going to be the prospect. I'm going to do
- 4:36Speaker 5: everything again, you know, to stay in baseball.
- 4:41Speaker 2: That's great.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Do you have any plans you know, aside from coaching
- 4:46Speaker 3: and staying home, like to stay in baseball in any
- 4:49Speaker 3: other capacity at this point in time.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Well, right now, I think everything's like it's happened too soon.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I'm still like adjusted to be like you know, the
- 4:57Speaker 5: Neils every time and everything. Of course, I want to
- 5:00Speaker 5: stay in baseball, but I want to dedicate a little
- 5:03Speaker 5: bit time to my family. But I don't think I
- 5:06Speaker 5: want to do it like full time, like baseball job,
- 5:09Speaker 5: like being the coach.
- 5:10Speaker 4: I like to be.
- 5:11Speaker 5: More like a mentor for the young kids, especially in
- 5:14Speaker 5: mind league, because that really helped me to get to
- 5:19Speaker 5: the point and to be success for my career. The
- 5:22Speaker 5: mental side, because it's easy, like you have your skill,
- 5:25Speaker 5: you're a professional, but if you're not right right here
- 5:28Speaker 5: in your brain, like mentally, nothing's I know a lot
- 5:33Speaker 5: of friends they have, you know, super skills, like they're superstar,
- 5:37Speaker 5: but they couldn't figure it out for some reason.
- 5:40Speaker 4: And I think it's everything start right here.
- 5:42Speaker 5: So I want to help this generation to become mature
- 5:47Speaker 5: so they can handle the big league and be successful
- 5:50Speaker 5: for a long career.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I thought it was cool, David in your in your
- 5:55Speaker 1: announcement announcing or retirement officially, you gave a shout out
- 5:59Speaker 1: to a couple of your former coaches, one of them
- 6:02Speaker 1: being one that Diamondbacks fans are very familiar with still
- 6:05Speaker 1: of course with the team and Dave McKay, you talk
- 6:08Speaker 1: about mentors and kind of wanting to do that for
- 6:11Speaker 1: other people. Did what we hear so much about Dave McKay, Sir,
- 6:16Speaker 1: I'm sure it comes as no surprise to you that
- 6:18Speaker 1: everyone who comes to this organization just absolutely loves the guy.
- 6:22Speaker 1: But for you personally, like, what what made him just
- 6:25Speaker 1: such an outstanding, outstanding coach defensively.
- 6:29Speaker 5: Well, David McKay, he was my mentor, he was best coach,
- 6:34Speaker 5: he was my friend, he was everything. And since the
- 6:38Speaker 5: first day I got to the big league he told me,
- 6:42Speaker 5: and it was just crazy.
- 6:43Speaker 4: He was like, David, here in the big league it's
- 6:47Speaker 4: more easy to hit than minor league. And I didn't
- 6:50Speaker 4: get it. I didn't know what.
- 6:51Speaker 5: He just told me that, and and I was like,
- 6:54Speaker 5: And then days was buying four and everything, and I
- 6:58Speaker 5: started realizing that, Yeah, you're right, it's more discipline in
- 7:01Speaker 5: the big league.
- 7:01Speaker 4: That's where you're in the big league. You got to
- 7:03Speaker 4: go through minor.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Leagues to get to be disciplined because the big league is,
- 7:09Speaker 5: you know, one hundred percent. You have to do it.
- 7:10Speaker 5: You don't have to do everything right, but you have
- 7:12Speaker 5: to be very disciplined, too inconsistent to stay in the
- 7:15Speaker 5: big league. He teached me how to play the game right.
- 7:18Speaker 5: He teached me how to run the base. It's not
- 7:20Speaker 5: like I didn't know how to do it. He just
- 7:21Speaker 5: told me how to do it, how to look professional,
- 7:24Speaker 5: how to good pressure. He made me a gold Glub
- 7:27Speaker 5: And I remember that year in twenty nineteen, and that's like,
- 7:30Speaker 5: I have to give him all the credit because I'm
- 7:32Speaker 5: not going to go out there and say, yeah, I
- 7:34Speaker 5: did it.
- 7:34Speaker 4: No, he did it for me. I thought I was
- 7:38Speaker 4: playing right, I was playing good.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Different and he came one day before the game started
- 7:42Speaker 5: and he showed me some numbers and said, David, these numbers.
- 7:46Speaker 4: They're okay, but I know you better than this. And
- 7:49Speaker 4: I'm like and.
- 7:50Speaker 5: Inside I was like, oh, I was a little not
- 7:53Speaker 5: upset about like I'm doing well.
- 7:55Speaker 4: No, I want you to do this because I know
- 7:57Speaker 4: you can be better than that. We went.
- 8:01Speaker 5: He always said, hey, it's not on any magic drill
- 8:04Speaker 5: to get better, and outfields are different.
- 8:06Speaker 4: But there is one.
- 8:08Speaker 5: So he made me check every single ball during VP
- 8:13Speaker 5: it doesn't matter. If it comes to you, you're gonna
- 8:15Speaker 5: react everywhere and that's going to make you be better.
- 8:19Speaker 5: And I was like, I trust you, mkay, I'm gonna
- 8:21Speaker 5: do it soon now I want to go gloves and
- 8:24Speaker 5: not even I didn't even play the full season. I
- 8:27Speaker 5: only play one hundred games because I ended all that
- 8:28Speaker 5: year having surgery on my shoulder. And I was the
- 8:32Speaker 5: best left field on the whole big just because him.
- 8:35Speaker 5: He just told me, this is what you gotta do.
- 8:36Speaker 5: It's just the trust that he tells you, like the
- 8:42Speaker 5: positive all this knowledge that he give it to you.
- 8:46Speaker 5: It's just like it's hard, like it's the best. I
- 8:51Speaker 5: think it's the best. That's why they always keep him.
- 8:53Speaker 5: They're gonna keep him for it. He's seventy five. And
- 8:56Speaker 5: the thing is he's seventy to seventy five years old.
- 9:00Speaker 5: It's amazing. How can you not admire that guy? And
- 9:03Speaker 5: I was like, I wish it could be like when
- 9:05Speaker 5: I'm all like you.
- 9:07Speaker 4: I mean, I shouldn't say that because you don't like
- 9:09Speaker 4: when you.
- 9:09Speaker 5: Call him all he looks like a twenty one years
- 9:13Speaker 5: old guy, but I mean he's I really love him.
- 9:16Speaker 5: And I texted him before that I announced my retirement.
- 9:19Speaker 5: I texted him before that and I say, I just
- 9:21Speaker 5: want to let you know that I made the decision.
- 9:23Speaker 5: I'm going to retire, and thank you for everything for
- 9:25Speaker 5: make me be a better person and make me be
- 9:28Speaker 5: who I am right now.
- 9:30Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 9:30Speaker 3: You know, his his sheets are legendary, you know, the
- 9:33Speaker 3: papers with the with the marks and the good and
- 9:37Speaker 3: the bad marks, the check marks and all that. Like
- 9:39Speaker 3: the accountability he demands. What was it like when you
- 9:42Speaker 3: know you show up on the wrong end of one
- 9:45Speaker 3: of his sheets too.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Hey, that's the best part because that's that's the challenge
- 9:50Speaker 5: that you take. I don't want to be a red
- 9:52Speaker 5: mark over there, so I'm going to do my best.
- 9:54Speaker 5: So you're thinking like, hey, I have to make a
- 9:56Speaker 5: good turn, I have to rum hard and everything. And
- 9:59Speaker 5: that's going to make you better, a better player, because
- 10:02Speaker 5: he will tell you, Hey, remember it's not just the
- 10:05Speaker 5: d BAK who's watching you play. It's another twenty nine
- 10:09Speaker 5: teams in the big leagues that's watching you. You don't
- 10:12Speaker 5: know where you're gonna be next, so give you one
- 10:14Speaker 5: hundred percent effort every day because you don't know where
- 10:18Speaker 5: you're gonna be tomorrow and you're gonna and another team
- 10:20Speaker 5: that's gonna say that, you know, we want David Peralto
- 10:23Speaker 5: because he's a role model. He played the game the
- 10:26Speaker 5: right way, and I want this guy for my team.
- 10:29Speaker 5: And that's how and that's how it is.
- 10:31Speaker 4: But hey, I'm.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Telling you there was the guys that we got traded.
- 10:35Speaker 5: And this is a funny story.
- 10:36Speaker 4: J D.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Martinez who's coming for Detroit, when he got traded to
- 10:40Speaker 5: the d Bags and.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Kay told him, hey, this is a sheep you gotta follow.
- 10:45Speaker 5: If you get negative and everything, you're gonna you know,
- 10:48Speaker 5: the first week he was like getting a little bit
- 10:50Speaker 5: annoying about that. I have from heart all the time
- 10:53Speaker 5: and everything.
- 10:54Speaker 4: And I'm like, man, just trusted and you're gonna become
- 10:57Speaker 4: a better player.
- 10:59Speaker 5: And he did it and he was like hustling. He
- 11:01Speaker 5: was like making base singles to the double and stuff
- 11:04Speaker 5: like that.
- 11:05Speaker 4: And he realized like, hey, yeah, maybe a better a
- 11:07Speaker 4: better baseball player.
- 11:09Speaker 5: Even just a simple thing a running chart, that's what
- 11:11Speaker 5: you called running chart. Something simple and make.
- 11:15Speaker 4: You be a better a better player.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Or something that's awesome. That's a great story.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Of course, your your defense was a was a big
- 11:24Speaker 1: part of your game, David, I know your offense maybe
- 11:26Speaker 1: even a bigger part of your game. And in your announcement,
- 11:29Speaker 1: you have a shout out to Jose Amado. Yeah, was
- 11:34Speaker 1: one of your one of your coaches back in independent
- 11:37Speaker 1: ball way back in the day. I know you you
- 11:39Speaker 1: credited him for your Silver Slugger that you won back
- 11:42Speaker 1: in twenty eighteen. Can you take us through a little
- 11:45Speaker 1: bit of your relationship with him. I know he's also
- 11:47Speaker 1: a really big part of this journey for you.
- 11:51Speaker 5: It was the same thing like you know, when I
- 11:54Speaker 5: did my transition from from the pitcher to pasista player.
- 11:58Speaker 4: You know, just want to say him, just pull the ball,
- 12:01Speaker 4: all this stuff.
- 12:02Speaker 5: So I went to play in Wichita Witness that's my
- 12:05Speaker 5: second year independent ball, and he was a hitting coach.
- 12:08Speaker 4: He's from Venezuela.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Made and he saw the talent that I have and
- 12:13Speaker 5: he told me like, hey, I'm going to teach you
- 12:16Speaker 5: how to use the whole field because it's now about
- 12:20Speaker 5: pulling the ball, pulling the ball and everything. And I'm like, okay,
- 12:23Speaker 5: I'm going to follow you. So I trust him. He
- 12:25Speaker 5: was like every single day with me, and he made
- 12:29Speaker 5: me be a better player because you're landtry guys and
- 12:32Speaker 5: a guy who can hit the ball to the other way,
- 12:34Speaker 5: they're going to stay in the big lead for a
- 12:36Speaker 5: long time. And he was doing every even when I
- 12:40Speaker 5: made it to the big league. He was my personal
- 12:42Speaker 5: hitting coach. I always work out with him during the
- 12:46Speaker 5: off season, and when something was wrong during the season,
- 12:49Speaker 5: I was sending a lot of video to him, like, Hey,
- 12:51Speaker 5: I'm doing this, what.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Do you see And he knew me. It's the same thing.
- 12:54Speaker 5: Twenty eighteen, when I win my silver Slogger and the
- 12:58Speaker 5: month of May I.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Hate one thirty. I was like, oh boy, I can't
- 13:05Speaker 4: hear anymore. So I talked to him.
- 13:07Speaker 5: I'm talking to him and everything, and he said like, Okay,
- 13:10Speaker 5: this is what we're gonna do. You gotta trust me.
- 13:12Speaker 5: And I'm like, whatever you say, I'm gonna do it.
- 13:14Speaker 5: We're gonna start from zero. We're gonna start from zero.
- 13:17Speaker 5: Let's start over.
- 13:18Speaker 4: We're gonna recept and you're gonna do this trial on
- 13:21Speaker 4: the cage and just trust it.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Trust it, and just when you go up there to
- 13:25Speaker 5: hit during the game, don't think about anything.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Just let it happen, okay. And that's who we start.
- 13:31Speaker 5: How we start and I ended up hitting thirty homers
- 13:33Speaker 5: and winning the civil slogan. It's amazing, like how how
- 13:39Speaker 5: you can change just with the dob with the talk
- 13:42Speaker 5: and change you mentality and the way you see stuff
- 13:47Speaker 5: can make you go to the next level.
- 13:52Speaker 1: I know you spent quite a bit of time with
- 13:54Speaker 1: current Diamondbacks manager Tory Lavello as well during your time
- 13:59Speaker 1: in the organization. I'm curious what your relationship with Tori
- 14:04Speaker 1: was like over those years. And he's still add it.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I guess for a reason, right.
- 14:10Speaker 4: You said it. He's still there for a reason because
- 14:12Speaker 4: he's a good man. I really like it. We really
- 14:14Speaker 4: have a good relationship.
- 14:15Speaker 5: And since the day one he got there in twenty seventeen,
- 14:20Speaker 5: he was like the communication with the players and everything
- 14:24Speaker 5: they trust in, and he really trusted the group that
- 14:27Speaker 5: we have over there. And I always talking to him like, Tori,
- 14:31Speaker 5: we got you, like it's you know, the brotherhood that
- 14:35Speaker 5: we have. Okay, you worry about the game, that we're
- 14:38Speaker 5: going to take care of the club house, and that
- 14:40Speaker 5: was that trust. And if it's something was going wrong,
- 14:42Speaker 5: like we talk your shot all the time, because it's
- 14:46Speaker 5: I mean, it's a lot of a lot of responsibility
- 14:48Speaker 5: for the manager to be.
- 14:50Speaker 4: I got to manage the game. I got to do this.
- 14:52Speaker 5: I got to make the right mode and I need
- 14:55Speaker 5: someone to help me out to keep the players and
- 14:58Speaker 5: the right track.
- 14:59Speaker 4: So it was it was cool.
- 15:02Speaker 5: And in the moment when I got traded, it was
- 15:04Speaker 5: a sad moment of course for everyone, and and and
- 15:08Speaker 5: you know, he wished me the best and everything, and
- 15:13Speaker 5: and I was like, hey, I'm gonna be here for
- 15:15Speaker 5: you guys forever you need men. And of course the
- 15:17Speaker 5: next year I signed with the Dodgers, and I'm like
- 15:21Speaker 5: everything went crazy, and you know how it is the situation,
- 15:24Speaker 5: but it's the same love.
- 15:26Speaker 4: It's the same love, same relationship. And and like you said,
- 15:30Speaker 4: he's steal in the d Bacs because he's the best.
- 15:32Speaker 4: He's a good man.
- 15:34Speaker 3: I remember, just your good natured humor joking. You know, hey,
- 15:39Speaker 3: you told Mike stop drafting left handed outfielders.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, doing it because the're gonna take it. They're
- 15:46Speaker 4: gonna take my job.
- 15:47Speaker 5: And I'm like, hey man, you have to have fun
- 15:52Speaker 5: in baseball because like look, that's that's that's what you're.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Gonna take with you.
- 15:57Speaker 5: You know, the game is gonna keep going the game,
- 16:00Speaker 5: it's gonna be changing and everything, but what you're gonna
- 16:03Speaker 5: take is all this great moments that you spend with you,
- 16:06Speaker 5: with your teammates, live bat moments, because you gotta take
- 16:11Speaker 5: your bat moments too, Like Hey, the big slam and
- 16:14Speaker 5: couldn't do anything for strikeout day. That's gonna happen because
- 16:18Speaker 5: you're gonna learn from that. But there's gonna be a
- 16:20Speaker 5: lot of good moment That's what you gotta take. You
- 16:22Speaker 5: gotta have fun. And I always tell the guys like, hey,
- 16:26Speaker 5: and you're your day, and you're today enjoying the big league.
- 16:29Speaker 5: You're in the big league. Enjoy your day because you
- 16:32Speaker 5: don't know where you're going to be tomorrow. And I
- 16:35Speaker 5: always tell them like, hey, yesterday, when I was yesterday,
- 16:39Speaker 5: I was playing independent ball. Today I'm in the big league.
- 16:42Speaker 5: I don't know what am I gonna be tomorrow. So
- 16:43Speaker 5: I'm gonna make sure that today I'm gonna give my one
- 16:47Speaker 5: hundred percent.
- 16:48Speaker 4: I'm gonna have fun.
- 16:49Speaker 5: I'm going to jump everything, and when they give me
- 16:51Speaker 5: the change to play, I'm gonna give everything I got.
- 16:55Speaker 5: By the time I go to bed and pull the
- 16:58Speaker 5: head on my pill up, I'm gonna be like I
- 17:00Speaker 5: did everything, so tomorrow is going to be a new day.
- 17:02Speaker 4: That was my mom sat every single day and it
- 17:06Speaker 4: worked for me, and it worked.
- 17:07Speaker 5: It worked for me, and that's what I was trying to,
- 17:09Speaker 5: like curse all these young kids, because there's a lot
- 17:14Speaker 5: of kids they come from Triple A just thinking, oh
- 17:16Speaker 5: I got a good, dude, I got a good I
- 17:18Speaker 5: gotta do this because they're.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Gonna send me down. Now this is my phone. You
- 17:22Speaker 4: don't know if that's going to be your only change
- 17:24Speaker 4: and you're gonna be just.
- 17:25Speaker 5: Worry about stress. No, enjoy Bigley. It's not easy and
- 17:29Speaker 5: it's not for everyone. So if you got the opportunity,
- 17:32Speaker 5: just take it and just enjoy and do everything you can.
- 17:36Speaker 5: And they said that was my mom set every day.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I know that.
- 17:40Speaker 3: The fans, I mean they totally felt that vibe from you,
- 17:44Speaker 3: you know, from the from the day you arrived and uh,
- 17:47Speaker 3: you know, just the way you played the game with
- 17:49Speaker 3: both joy and hustle and and well all.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Of the mind you know, made your favorite.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Now you had that nickname, of course, it's a fabulous nickname,
- 18:01Speaker 3: the freight Train.
- 18:03Speaker 2: I'm trying to remember how that came about. Was that
- 18:06Speaker 2: from from the broadcast booth.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Or yeah, Steve Steeper f you, yeah, the one who
- 18:12Speaker 4: named it that way.
- 18:13Speaker 5: It was like, because you know, Chase Field is a
- 18:17Speaker 5: huge gap, big Bullpark, and I was hitting a lot
- 18:20Speaker 5: of triples, triples, and I was like, I assume every
- 18:23Speaker 5: time when I was hitting those ball, oh, hitting the gap,
- 18:25Speaker 5: I'm running.
- 18:27Speaker 4: And he was keep saying he's running like a freight train,
- 18:29Speaker 4: like a freight train, and.
- 18:32Speaker 5: You know, the friends love it, and I was like,
- 18:34Speaker 5: I like it, it's working, so why not so and
- 18:38Speaker 5: I became the freight tram and everyone and then you
- 18:40Speaker 5: gotta do it.
- 18:40Speaker 4: You got to have some stuff. You know.
- 18:44Speaker 1: That's awesome if I'm getting the history right, which corrects
- 18:47Speaker 1: me if I'm wrong.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Uh.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I believe there was a point when you were an
- 18:51Speaker 1: independent ball maybe on the verge of signing something with
- 18:55Speaker 1: the Diamondbacks. I believe it was Jose Amatto, right, who
- 18:58Speaker 1: was maybe looking an opportunity for you to play baseball
- 19:01Speaker 1: in Mexico, maybe earn a little bit more money that way.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I mean, how close were you to going that route
- 19:07Speaker 1: instead of signing with the Diamondbacks, And like, how do
- 19:09Speaker 1: you think about that now? In retrospect.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Oh I got a goose fun with that, you know what,
- 19:14Speaker 5: Because he's the one who was like, hey, David, I
- 19:18Speaker 5: got you.
- 19:19Speaker 4: You want to go to Mexico.
- 19:20Speaker 5: You want to make more money and you know, and
- 19:22Speaker 5: I was like, sure, send me you pass board like
- 19:26Speaker 5: photos and everything, and for some reason it was meant
- 19:31Speaker 5: to be. For some reason, something happened. They got a
- 19:33Speaker 5: little bit delayed, and the Diamondback came a day before,
- 19:37Speaker 5: like hey, we're going to sign you. The next day,
- 19:40Speaker 5: my mother told me like, hey, we gotta know.
- 19:41Speaker 4: I'm like, hey, I signed with the d Bags. But
- 19:44Speaker 4: it was meant to be.
- 19:45Speaker 5: I was this close to go to Mexico because they
- 19:47Speaker 5: were gonna pay me good money, you know, Mexico to
- 19:50Speaker 5: pay good money. And I was like, oh, I just
- 19:52Speaker 5: want to you know, I want to play too, I
- 19:54Speaker 5: want to make money, and yeah, of course Mexico's it's
- 19:58Speaker 5: a hard level too. And dating happened for a reason,
- 20:01Speaker 5: so that's good. I'm glad that didn't happen. But he
- 20:04Speaker 5: was helping me to go with her too. You got
- 20:07Speaker 5: it right, You got the story right. Yeah, I'm pretty
- 20:09Speaker 5: sure he told you. He told I'm going to buy that.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Glad.
- 20:13Speaker 1: I'm glad I got the history right. I'm also I'm
- 20:16Speaker 1: also curious, like, as someone who this is something I
- 20:20Speaker 1: struggled with personally for many years, I imagine I'm not alone,
- 20:24Speaker 1: like I I tend to find my identity at times,
- 20:27Speaker 1: and what I do for work, like you know what, however,
- 20:30Speaker 1: I feel like I'm performing at my job like that
- 20:33Speaker 1: is closely tied to just how I'm doing as a person.
- 20:36Speaker 1: And if I didn't have a job that I was
- 20:38Speaker 1: that I was doing in the same way, I like
- 20:40Speaker 1: wouldn't know what to do with myself anymore. So I'm curious, like,
- 20:43Speaker 1: how are you how are you processing that? As someone
- 20:46Speaker 1: who baseball has been such a huge, huge part of
- 20:49Speaker 1: your life for so long, how are you imagining life
- 20:52Speaker 1: without without that in your schedule on a day to
- 20:55Speaker 1: day basis.
- 20:58Speaker 5: I just do that with my kids, with my family.
- 21:01Speaker 5: That's what I do with my family. I'm a family guy.
- 21:05Speaker 5: I like to spend a lot of time with my family,
- 21:07Speaker 5: with friends and everything.
- 21:09Speaker 4: And now that I don't.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Have that part of baseball, so so my family get
- 21:17Speaker 5: to enjoy all the energy.
- 21:19Speaker 4: That I have seven you know, my kids. But that's
- 21:25Speaker 4: what I do.
- 21:25Speaker 2: You know.
- 21:26Speaker 5: I mean as a boat player, you know you know
- 21:29Speaker 5: when you start, but you know it's going to be
- 21:31Speaker 5: an end of your career at some point, and you
- 21:34Speaker 5: want to end your career and the right way. And
- 21:37Speaker 5: for me, I knew that that moment was going to
- 21:39Speaker 5: come and and you have to prepare yourself mentally, like
- 21:43Speaker 5: I said, like I said at the beginning, as mar
- 21:47Speaker 5: team proud of one of the best teammates that I
- 21:49Speaker 5: ever had.
- 21:50Speaker 4: He always talked to me, and when I need to
- 21:53Speaker 4: talk to someone about that, he always call him. We
- 21:55Speaker 4: still stay in touch.
- 21:57Speaker 5: And because he retired and you have family and everything,
- 22:01Speaker 5: he helped me to go through this, like, hey, you
- 22:04Speaker 5: got to be prepared for this.
- 22:06Speaker 4: You got to be prepared.
- 22:07Speaker 5: It's going to be a new life because now you're
- 22:09Speaker 5: going to be with your family twenty four to seven,
- 22:11Speaker 5: which is you're not used to. It's nothing wrong, but
- 22:14Speaker 5: you got to be willing to do that, you know,
- 22:16Speaker 5: because we used to during the season is one week
- 22:20Speaker 5: with the family and then another week.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Were on the road for.
- 22:23Speaker 5: Six months, seven months, and then that stuff it matters,
- 22:27Speaker 5: you know, And I was going, no, I'm ready for that.
- 22:31Speaker 5: I think I miss my kids and I want to
- 22:33Speaker 5: do it for them, and I have the opportunity to
- 22:36Speaker 5: do it, and I can do it.
- 22:38Speaker 4: So I'm going to do it.
- 22:39Speaker 5: But it's my family gets to joint all that, all
- 22:43Speaker 5: the energy, all the craziness, because I have to let.
- 22:46Speaker 4: It out somehow.
- 22:48Speaker 3: So do your kids have a harder time keeping up
- 22:50Speaker 3: with your energy or you have a harder.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Time keeping up with their energy.
- 22:54Speaker 4: I have a hard time keeping up with the energy.
- 22:56Speaker 4: They got all my energy.
- 22:58Speaker 5: Oh unbelievable, But yep, I had to do and that's
- 23:03Speaker 5: what I steem shape. I'm still going working on and everything,
- 23:06Speaker 5: so I'll steam shame and I can keep up with them.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Last last thing for you, data that we'll get you
- 23:12Speaker 1: out of here. I imagine there has to be at
- 23:14Speaker 1: least a small part of you that is somewhat sad
- 23:17Speaker 1: to not experience the ABS system that is coming to baseball.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Like if I were you, I'd be thinking so years
- 23:24Speaker 1: pass throughout my career, like all of the calls over
- 23:27Speaker 1: the years that oh that was a missed call, that
- 23:30Speaker 1: was a missed call. You know, this year you'd have
- 23:33Speaker 1: had the opportunity to challenge those right. What is your
- 23:37Speaker 1: perspective on this new ABS system that it's coming to baseball.
- 23:44Speaker 5: So I'm I'm an old school guy, and I have
- 23:47Speaker 5: experience to do that in twenty four because I play
- 23:51Speaker 5: a littlely on Triple A because I was rehaving my surgery,
- 23:54Speaker 5: so they have right going on.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't like it. I didn't like it. Like
- 24:00Speaker 4: it because.
- 24:03Speaker 5: I think it's face It's more like it's a human
- 24:06Speaker 5: beings a judgment. Like I know, some calls you shoot
- 24:09Speaker 5: deserve it. Oh I'm right, I'm wrong, But that's part
- 24:12Speaker 5: of the game. Some decisions can screw gains so big,
- 24:20Speaker 5: you know, big decision, but it's part of the game.
- 24:23Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 24:24Speaker 5: That's my personal opinion. Some people like it, some people
- 24:27Speaker 5: know don't like it. But but I'm not a big fan.
- 24:31Speaker 5: I mean, if you make me choose between the rob
- 24:35Speaker 5: up Umpire or the A B the Challenge, I'd rather
- 24:38Speaker 5: do the challenge the one, I'd rather do that one
- 24:41Speaker 5: than the other one. But it's just, you know, that's
- 24:45Speaker 5: the way it is. You know, Like I said, I'm
- 24:46Speaker 5: an old school guy, and and and you know, the
- 24:49Speaker 5: catchers their job, Like how now, how are you gonna
- 24:53Speaker 5: how are you gonna evaluate catchers?
- 24:56Speaker 4: Because their choice is to make ball looks like a strike.
- 24:59Speaker 4: So how you're going to evaluate them, you know, that's
- 25:02Speaker 4: that's a big deal for them too.
- 25:04Speaker 5: Pictures they have to like, you know, like it. It's
- 25:08Speaker 5: a lot of question you know about that. But like
- 25:11Speaker 5: I said, I'm glad, well not glad, but like I'm
- 25:14Speaker 5: out so so all the stuff like is it not
- 25:19Speaker 5: not a big friend of that, but it is what
- 25:21Speaker 5: it is.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Like the games is changing. You have to make an adjustment.
- 25:25Speaker 3: I just had one last question if I can one more. So,
- 25:30Speaker 3: WBC is just about to start. You had very solid
- 25:35Speaker 3: performance in twenty three in the WBC, and I wanted
- 25:39Speaker 3: to hear about your experience playing in the WBC and
- 25:42Speaker 3: how that ranked the excitement of playing for your country,
- 25:45Speaker 3: how that ranked amongst your baseball experiences.
- 25:48Speaker 5: Hey, that that's the best experience of my life in baseball.
- 25:54Speaker 5: You know, well you can take it at we like always.
- 25:56Speaker 5: The first one is going to be when you made
- 25:58Speaker 5: your MLB DEW but representing your country, having your Venezuela,
- 26:03Speaker 5: I'm in your chess and just playing just to represent
- 26:06Speaker 5: your country.
- 26:07Speaker 4: What was the best for me? And I never made
- 26:11Speaker 4: it to the Hollar Star Game.
- 26:12Speaker 5: I should have made it in twenty eighteen, but well whatever,
- 26:15Speaker 5: but that was my All Star game. That that was
- 26:19Speaker 5: my Alli Star game because I was playing against all
- 26:22Speaker 5: Superstar my teammates, they were all Superstar and it was
- 26:28Speaker 5: unbelievable that bye the energy. It was super loud in Miami.
- 26:34Speaker 5: Even my wife it was like, wow, this is crazy.
- 26:37Speaker 5: My family they were like, this is crazy and I
- 26:39Speaker 5: love it. So I'm going to be rooting for Venezuela
- 26:42Speaker 5: of course, and this time they know they're gonna make
- 26:45Speaker 5: it and I can't wait to start.
- 26:46Speaker 4: I'm gonna be watching for sure.
- 26:49Speaker 2: That's great. Thanks for sharing.
- 26:50Speaker 3: I just can't imagine what that must have been like.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Like you said, in the jam Pack Stadium in Miami atmosphere.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Here, I'm loud. I'm always loud when I'm playing Accury.
- 27:00Speaker 4: You can hear myself. I was like, Okay, this is crazy,
- 27:03Speaker 4: this is crazy. Wow it was. It was amazing. Yeah.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Well, David, thank you so much for taking the time.
- 27:10Speaker 1: We really appreciate it. Truly goes without saying. I mean,
- 27:13Speaker 1: one of the one of the greatest stories in our
- 27:15Speaker 1: sport over the last couple of decades, from independent ball
- 27:18Speaker 1: to just an unbelievable career. So thanks again for hopping
- 27:22Speaker 1: on and best of luck keeping up with keeping up
- 27:25Speaker 1: with the kids at home.
- 27:27Speaker 4: I thank you guy, I appreciate it. Thank you for
- 27:29Speaker 4: having me.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Us take care
- 27:32Speaker 1: All right,
