- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 14th of
- 0:16August, and you have tapped on play and invited me in to your
- 0:21day, and for that I'm very grateful.
- 0:23I hope you're going well. I I've done about you, but I am
- 0:26just loving this music. It is impossibly cool, and in
- 0:29fact, when I talk over the top of it, it makes me associated
- 0:33with something way cooler than I am.
- 0:36So I'll just claim that I'm not trying to be fraudulent and say
- 0:39I'm cooler, but Gee, it's pretty great.
- 0:42Thank you to the good people at Blue Dot Sessions who write this
- 0:46music, record this music and share it free for us to enjoy.
- 0:50So thanks guys, good on you. We are going to continue reading
- 0:54today as we hear what Paul has to say to his old friends in
- 0:59Corinth about the topic of marriage.
- 1:01So join me friends, as we read together First Corinthians
- 1:05Chapter 7. Now regarding the questions you
- 1:18asked in your letter, yes, it is good to abstain from sexual
- 1:23relations, but because there is so much sexual immorality, each
- 1:28man should have his own wife and each woman should have her own
- 1:32husband. The husband should fulfil his
- 1:35wife's sexual needs and the wife should fulfil her husband's
- 1:39needs. The wife gives authority over
- 1:42her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his
- 1:46body to his wife. Do not deprive each other of
- 1:50sexual relations unless you both agree to refrain from sexual
- 1:55intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more
- 1:58completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come
- 2:02together again so that Satan won't be able to tempt you
- 2:05because of your lack of self control.
- 2:08I say this as a concession, not as a command.
- 2:13But I wish everyone was single, just as I am.
- 2:17Yet each person has a special gift from God of one kind or
- 2:22another. So I say to those who aren't
- 2:26married and to widows, it's better to stay unmarried just as
- 2:30I am. But if they can't control
- 2:32themselves, they should go ahead and marry.
- 2:35It's better to marry than to burn with lust.
- 2:39But for those who are married, I have a command that comes not
- 2:43from me, but from the Lord. A wife must not leave her
- 2:47husband, but if she does leave him, let her remain single, or
- 2:52else be reconciled to him. And the husband must not leave
- 2:56his wife. Now I will speak to the rest of
- 2:59you, though I do not have a direct command from the Lord.
- 3:04If a fellow believer has a wife who is not a believer and she is
- 3:08willing to continue living with him, he must not leave her.
- 3:12And if a believing woman has a husband who is not a believer
- 3:16and he is willing to continue living with her, she must not
- 3:20leave him. For the believing wife brings
- 3:23holiness to her marriage, and the believing husband brings
- 3:27holiness to his marriage. Otherwise your children would
- 3:31not be holy. But now they are holy.
- 3:36But if the husband or wife who isn't a believer insists on
- 3:39leaving, let them go. In such cases, the believing
- 3:44husband or wife is no longer bound to the other.
- 3:47For God has called you to live in peace.
- 3:52Don't you wives realise that your husbands might be saved
- 3:55because of you? And don't you husbands realise
- 3:58that your wives might be saved because of you?
- 4:03Each of you should continue to live in whatever situation the
- 4:06Lord has placed you, and remain as you were when God first
- 4:11called you. This is my rule for all the
- 4:15churches. For instance, a man who was
- 4:18circumcised before he became a believer should not try to
- 4:21reverse it. And the man who was
- 4:24uncircumcised when he became a believer should not be
- 4:27circumcised now, for it makes no difference whether or not a man
- 4:31has been circumcised. The important thing is to keep
- 4:35God's commandments. Yes, each of you should remain
- 4:40as you were when God called you. Are you a slave?
- 4:44Don't let that worry you. But if you get a chance to be
- 4:48free, take it. And remember, if you were a
- 4:51slave when the Lord called you, you are now free in the Lord.
- 4:56And if you were free when the Lord called you, you are now a
- 5:00slave of Christ. God paid a high price for you,
- 5:05so don't be enslaved by the world.
- 5:08Each of you, dear brothers and sisters, should remain as you
- 5:12were when God first called you. Now, regarding your question
- 5:16about the young women who are not yet married, I do not have a
- 5:20command from the Lord for them. But the Lord in His mercy has
- 5:25given me wisdom that can be trusted, and I will share it
- 5:28with you. Because of the present crisis, I
- 5:32think it is best to remain as you are.
- 5:35If you have a wife, do not seek to end the marriage, and if you
- 5:39do not have a wife, do not seek to get married.
- 5:44But if you do get married, it is not a sin.
- 5:47And if a young woman gets married, it is not a sin.
- 5:51However, those who get married at this time will have troubles,
- 5:55and I'm trying to spare you those problems.
- 5:58But let me say this, dear brothers and sisters, the time
- 6:02that remains is very short. So from now on, those with wives
- 6:07should not focus only on their marriage.
- 6:10Those who weep or who rejoice or who buy things should not be
- 6:15absorbed by their weeping or their joy or their possessions.
- 6:20Those who use the things of the world should not become attached
- 6:23to them. For this world as we know it
- 6:25will soon pass away. I want you to be free from the
- 6:30concerns of this life. An unmarried man can spend his
- 6:33time doing the Lord's work and thinking how to please him.
- 6:38But a married man has to think about his earthly
- 6:40responsibilities and how to please his wife.
- 6:44His interests are divided. In the same way, a woman who is
- 6:49no longer married or has never been married can be devoted to
- 6:53the Lord and wholly in body and in spirit, but a married woman
- 6:59has to think about her earthly responsibilities and how to
- 7:02please her husband. I'm saying this for your
- 7:05benefit, not to place restrictions on you.
- 7:09I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best,
- 7:13with as few distractions as possible.
- 7:16But if a man thinks that he's treating his fiancee improperly
- 7:20and will inevitably give in to this passion, let him marry her
- 7:25as he wishes. It's not a sin, but if he has
- 7:28decided firmly not to marry, and there is no urgency and he can
- 7:33control his passion, he does well not to marry.
- 7:37So the person who marries his fiancee does well, and the
- 7:41person who doesn't marry does even better.
- 7:45A wife is bound to a husband as long as he lives.
- 7:49If her husband dies, she's free to marry anyone she wishes, but
- 7:54only if he loves the Lord. But in my opinion, it would be
- 8:00better for her to stay single. And I think that I'm giving you
- 8:04counsel from God's Spirit when I say this.
- 8:17Our Lord Jesus, we can hear so clearly in these words from Paul
- 8:23that his heart is for you and for the ministry of your
- 8:26Kingdom. So Lord, wherever our life finds
- 8:30us, in our work, in our friendship circles, with our
- 8:35possessions, our staff, with our families and our marriages,
- 8:40Lord, I pray that they would all be subservient to us as your
- 8:46children, serving you in your Kingdom.
- 8:51Jesus, let us use our life circumstance in a way that lifts
- 8:56you up. Help us to partner with our
- 9:00friends and our families. Help us to use our stuff and our
- 9:04resources to share your love and to beam your Kingdom into the
- 9:11world around us, because that is your calling on our lives.
- 9:18Our Lord, I thank you for the wonderful things that you have
- 9:21given us, our families, our friends, and the things that
- 9:25bring us joy. And Lord, we know that you don't
- 9:30want us not to enjoy them because you've given us to them
- 9:32for joy. But may they always be in
- 9:37service of you. And we pray all of this in your
- 9:43powerful saving name that we are so grateful for Jesus.
- 9:48Amen.
