- 0:49Speaker 1: priest and why he meets our need as the high priest.
- 0:53Speaker 1: We're also going to be talking about the Eucharist and
- 0:56Speaker 1: communion as well, whether or not it is the physical
- 0:59Speaker 1: manifestation of Jesus's body and blood, because that is what
- 1:04Speaker 1: Hebrew seven, verse twenty seven talks about today. So I'm
- 1:07Speaker 1: excited to get into that topic with you in just
- 1:09Speaker 1: one second, right after a word from a sponsor. Okay,
- 1:14Speaker 1: faithful listeners, grab your Bible out of the version that
- 1:16Speaker 1: you prefer. But as usual, I'll be reading from the web.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Let's go ahead and read Hebrew seven twenty two through
- 1:23Speaker 1: twenty eight. Let's give reverence to the reading of God's word.
- 1:28Speaker 1: By so much, Jesus has become the guarantee of a
- 1:31Speaker 1: better covenant. Many, indeed, have been made priests because they
- 1:35Speaker 1: are hindered from continuing by death. But he, because he
- 1:39Speaker 1: lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable. Therefore, he is also
- 1:44Speaker 1: able to save to the uttermost those who draw near
- 1:47Speaker 1: to God through him, seeing that he lives forever, to
- 1:50Speaker 1: make intercession for them. For such a high priest was
- 1:53Speaker 1: fitting for us, holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and
- 1:58Speaker 1: made higher than the heavens. Who doesn't need, like those
- 2:01Speaker 1: high priests, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his
- 2:04Speaker 1: own sins and then for the sins of the people.
- 2:07Speaker 1: For He did this once for all when he offered
- 2:09Speaker 1: up himself. For the law appoints men as high priests
- 2:13Speaker 1: who have weakness, But the word of the oath, which
- 2:16Speaker 1: came after the law appoints a son forever who has
- 2:19Speaker 1: been perfected. So, starting here in verse twenty two, it says,
- 2:24Speaker 1: by so much, Jesus has become the guarantee of a
- 2:27Speaker 1: better covenant. Now, obviously, this better covenant that is being
- 2:30Speaker 1: talked about right here is the New Testament. It is
- 2:34Speaker 1: everything that Jesus did when he came down to Earth.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Jesus made the new Covenant. Actually, at the Last Supper.
- 2:39Speaker 1: In Luke twenty two, verses nineteen and twenty, it says
- 2:42Speaker 1: he took the bread when they had given thanks, and
- 2:45Speaker 1: he broke it and gave it to them, saying, this
- 2:47Speaker 1: is my body, which is given for you. Do this
- 2:49Speaker 1: in memory of me. Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying,
- 2:53Speaker 1: this cup is the new covenant in my blood, which
- 2:57Speaker 1: is poured out for you. So the new Covenant, or
- 3:00Speaker 1: the new promise, which is what covenant means, the new
- 3:03Speaker 1: promise is what Jesus did up on the cross when
- 3:07Speaker 1: he shed his own blood for our sins. He became
- 3:10Speaker 1: the sacrifice for humanity, and that is the new Covenant.
- 3:14Speaker 1: The old covenant is everything found in the Old Testament
- 3:17Speaker 1: laws that was God speaking to his people about how
- 3:20Speaker 1: they need to live in order to be righteous. But
- 3:23Speaker 1: the point of that covenant was to prove that nobody
- 3:25Speaker 1: could be righteous on their own. Not one single person
- 3:29Speaker 1: could actually follow the Old Testament laws, even if it
- 3:31Speaker 1: looked like on the outside you were following all the laws.
- 3:35Speaker 1: On the inside, inside your hearts, nobody is following the
- 3:39Speaker 1: Old Testament laws because everybody has hated somebody. Everybody has
- 3:44Speaker 1: envied somebody over something they'd had, or been jealous about something,
- 3:47Speaker 1: or lusted after somebody done any of the things that
- 3:50Speaker 1: the law tells us not to do. It starts in
- 3:53Speaker 1: the heart first. That's why Jesus was always telling the Pharisees,
- 3:57Speaker 1: you guys look like you're following the law, but on
- 3:59Speaker 1: the inside, your tombs filled with dead man's bones. You're
- 4:04Speaker 1: all whitewashed and pretty on the outside, but inside you
- 4:07Speaker 1: are filled with so much corruption. That is every single person,
- 4:11Speaker 1: not just the Pharisees. So Jesus made a brand new
- 4:14Speaker 1: covenant with us, and the covenant was his blood. That's
- 4:18Speaker 1: what he says right here. He took the cup after supper, saying,
- 4:21Speaker 1: this cup is the new covenant in my blood, which
- 4:24Speaker 1: is poured out for you. So Jesus's blood is the
- 4:28Speaker 1: new covenant. It is the promise of grace that we
- 4:33Speaker 1: have a perfect savior who follows the law perfectly for us,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and that we can't achieve righteousness on our own, and
- 4:40Speaker 1: that we need a savior. So if we believe on Jesus,
- 4:44Speaker 1: we have salvation. And that is what the entire book
- 4:47Speaker 1: of Hebrews actually is talking about. In a nutshell, So Jesus,
- 4:52Speaker 1: in verse twenty two of Hebrews seven, has become the
- 4:55Speaker 1: guarantee of a better covenant. And notice it doesn't say
- 4:58Speaker 1: a guarantee of a better cup, but the guarantee of
- 5:02Speaker 1: a better covenant, meaning that there's only one way to
- 5:04Speaker 1: the Father. Jesus himself is the way, the truth, and
- 5:09Speaker 1: the life. No one can come near the Father except
- 5:13Speaker 1: through Jesus. He is the path that leads to righteousness.
- 5:17Speaker 1: There is no other way to get to Heaven other
- 5:20Speaker 1: than through Jesus himself, So he is the guarantee of
- 5:24Speaker 1: a better covenant. Verse twenty three, it says many, indeed
- 5:27Speaker 1: have been made priests because they are hindered from continuing
- 5:31Speaker 1: by death, But he, because he lives forever, has his
- 5:34Speaker 1: priesthood unchangeable. So we have already discussed how Jesus is
- 5:39Speaker 1: the high priest. His priesthood is going to last forever
- 5:44Speaker 1: because God himself is unchangeable. Jesus himself cannot die. He
- 5:49Speaker 1: has already died once for the sins of humanity. He
- 5:52Speaker 1: will never die again. That is what being resurrected means.
- 5:55Speaker 1: By the way, there's a difference between raising somebody from
- 5:59Speaker 1: the dead and being resurre When you raise somebody from
- 6:01Speaker 1: the dead, it means they're going to die again. Being resurrected,
- 6:05Speaker 1: there's only one person who has ever been resurrected, and
- 6:08Speaker 1: that's Jesus himself. That means when you are arisen from
- 6:10Speaker 1: the dead, you are never going to die again. You
- 6:14Speaker 1: have immortality. So Jesus, because he lives forever, his priesthood
- 6:18Speaker 1: is unchangeable. Whereas all these other priests that existed in
- 6:22Speaker 1: the Old Testament, they all died, and so they kept
- 6:25Speaker 1: having to get a new priest every single time one
- 6:29Speaker 1: would die. But that entire system has all been changed.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Now we have one high priest who we go to
- 6:35Speaker 1: to confess our sins to. We need to pray to
- 6:37Speaker 1: him and ask him like Hey, Jesus, you're my high priest,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and I have done something so wrong this week. I
- 6:43Speaker 1: humble myself before you, and I ask you to forgive
- 6:47Speaker 1: me of my sins. Jesus is our high priest. We
- 6:51Speaker 1: go to him first before we go to anybody else.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Now that being said, it is good to confess your
- 6:56Speaker 1: sins to other people. That's what James five sixteen says.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Confess us your sins to one another and pray for
- 7:01Speaker 1: one another that you may be healed. The insistent prayer
- 7:04Speaker 1: of a righteous person is powerfully effective. So it is
- 7:08Speaker 1: good to confess your sins to somebody, especially if that
- 7:11Speaker 1: person is the one that you hurt. You know, if
- 7:14Speaker 1: you sinned against that person and cause to damage in
- 7:17Speaker 1: some way, you should absolutely go to that person and
- 7:20Speaker 1: confess that sin to them and say like, hey, I
- 7:22Speaker 1: am sorry, I hurt you. This was wrong of me
- 7:25Speaker 1: to do. That's a really good thing to do. You
- 7:27Speaker 1: can also go to somebody if you need an accountability
- 7:30Speaker 1: partner and ask them to pray for you or keep
- 7:33Speaker 1: you accountable from something that you are struggling with. Because
- 7:36Speaker 1: the reasons we confess our sins outwardly to other people
- 7:39Speaker 1: is for two reasons. Either we hurt that person and
- 7:41Speaker 1: we need to apologize, or we need to free ourselves
- 7:46Speaker 1: from the guilt of those sins. Now, granted, the person
- 7:49Speaker 1: that we confess those sins to, they're never going to
- 7:52Speaker 1: be able to free us from that guilt. Only Jesus
- 7:55Speaker 1: himself can free us from that guilt. But sometimes it
- 8:00Speaker 1: really helps to air the sins that we have been
- 8:03Speaker 1: holding on too. I can tell you this from personal experience.
- 8:06Speaker 1: When I was going through my struggles with same sex attraction,
- 8:10Speaker 1: when I was bottling all that in, I felt so
- 8:12Speaker 1: guilty and miserable all the time. I was depressed, and
- 8:16Speaker 1: it wasn't until I broke down I told my husband
- 8:19Speaker 1: and a few other people that were close to me
- 8:20Speaker 1: about this that I was finally freed from that burden
- 8:23Speaker 1: and it did not have the same power over me
- 8:26Speaker 1: that it once did. And I can actually tell you
- 8:28Speaker 1: right now, honestly that I do not have those same
- 8:32Speaker 1: feelings of same sex attraction anymore. I just don't have
- 8:36Speaker 1: them because that sin no longer has power over me
- 8:40Speaker 1: because I aired it publicly, and I also confessed it
- 8:43Speaker 1: to God at the exact same time, and thank God,
- 8:45Speaker 1: he is the one who freed me from the guilt
- 8:48Speaker 1: of that sin. It wasn't any human being that did it.
- 8:50Speaker 1: It was Jesus himself that healed me of that guilt.
- 8:54Speaker 1: So I'm not saying it's bad to air your grievances
- 8:57Speaker 1: to somebody, But if you're expecting that person to do
- 9:00Speaker 1: the work of Jesus for you in your life, thinking
- 9:03Speaker 1: that the words of that person is going to free
- 9:05Speaker 1: you from your sins, then you are not doing it
- 9:08Speaker 1: for the right reason. You go to Jesus and you
- 9:10Speaker 1: ask him to free you from the guilt of those sins,
- 9:13Speaker 1: not any human being. Because Jesus is our high priest.
- 9:17Speaker 1: He intercedes for us, and he understands us. He is
- 9:20Speaker 1: a wonderful and a good and a kind high priest
- 9:23Speaker 1: who understands every single thing that we're going through because
- 9:26Speaker 1: he dealt with it himself. He walked the earth, he
- 9:30Speaker 1: was tempted in every single way that you and I are,
- 9:32Speaker 1: but he didn't sin. But he understands. He gets it.
- 9:36Speaker 1: So when we come to him with these sins, he's
- 9:38Speaker 1: not going to push us away, especially if we have
- 9:41Speaker 1: a humble heart. So Jesus has changed the priesthood. Therefore
- 9:46Speaker 1: he is also able to save to the uttermost those
- 9:49Speaker 1: who draw near to God through him, seeing that he
- 9:52Speaker 1: lives forever to make intercession for them. So there you go.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Jesus is the only one who can save, and it
- 9:57Speaker 1: says that he saves to the most. This means that
- 10:01Speaker 1: no matter what sins you have committed, you are not
- 10:05Speaker 1: beyond the saving power of Jesus. Satan might like to
- 10:09Speaker 1: say that to you. He might be like, oh, you,
- 10:12Speaker 1: no way, You've done way too much evil stuff. There
- 10:15Speaker 1: is no possibility that you could ever be saved. Jesus's
- 10:18Speaker 1: power is not good enough for you. You've done too
- 10:21Speaker 1: many sins. That is not true. He is able to
- 10:24Speaker 1: save to the uttermost those who draw near to God
- 10:28Speaker 1: through him. Anybody that comes to Jesus with a humble heart,
- 10:31Speaker 1: genuinely wanting repentance and forgiveness of sins, well, then they
- 10:36Speaker 1: have salvation and they have forgiveness of sins because Jesus
- 10:40Speaker 1: has the power to do that. That's what it says
- 10:42Speaker 1: right here. He is able to save to the uttermost
- 10:46Speaker 1: those who draw near to God through him, seeing that
- 10:49Speaker 1: he lives forever to make intercession for them Verse twenty six.
- 10:53Speaker 1: For such a high priest was fitting for us, holy, guiltless, undefiled,
- 10:58Speaker 1: separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens. Who
- 11:02Speaker 1: doesn't need, like those high priests to offer up sacrifices daily,
- 11:06Speaker 1: first for his own sins and then for the sins
- 11:08Speaker 1: of the people. For he did this once for all
- 11:11Speaker 1: when he offered up himself. So Jesus, our high priest,
- 11:16Speaker 1: it says, was fitting for us. Now, what does that
- 11:18Speaker 1: mean to be fitting for us? Well, it basically means
- 11:21Speaker 1: that he meets all of our needs, and he does
- 11:25Speaker 1: this through his holiness, through his guiltlessness, through his undefiledness,
- 11:31Speaker 1: through the fact that he is separated from sinners, and
- 11:34Speaker 1: that he has made higher than the heavens. The Old
- 11:36Speaker 1: Testament priests, they were none of these things. They were
- 11:39Speaker 1: not holy. They had to be made holy through sacrifice
- 11:44Speaker 1: and through other things. And most of the time they
- 11:47Speaker 1: weren't even made holy because they weren't doing the right things.
- 11:50Speaker 1: But if they did all the proper steps that God
- 11:52Speaker 1: told them to do, they would gain momentary holiness where
- 11:56Speaker 1: they could intercede for the people. They were not guiltless
- 11:59Speaker 1: because because they sinned all the time, they were not undefiled,
- 12:03Speaker 1: because they sinned. They were not separated from sinners. They
- 12:08Speaker 1: were sinners. They were not made higher than the heavens.
- 12:11Speaker 1: They were human beings, the same as you and I.
- 12:14Speaker 1: But Jesus himself, it says, was made higher than the heavens. Now,
- 12:17Speaker 1: this is not to say that Jesus Christ was made.
- 12:20Speaker 1: That's what a lot of people think, is that Jesus
- 12:22Speaker 1: was created. I've talked before about John chapter one. How
- 12:25Speaker 1: it proves that Jesus was not created. He has existed
- 12:28Speaker 1: in the beginning. If you read John chapter one, it
- 12:31Speaker 1: says in the NLT version, in the beginning the word
- 12:34Speaker 1: already existed, he is, was, and is to come. That
- 12:39Speaker 1: is Jesus. So when it says that Jesus was made
- 12:42Speaker 1: higher than the heavens, it means that he was revealed
- 12:46Speaker 1: as God's son. He was revealed as the Messiah. Instead
- 12:51Speaker 1: of being a mystery like it was in the Old Testament,
- 12:53Speaker 1: Jesus has been revealed to us. It also says here
- 12:56Speaker 1: that the reason Jesus was fitting for us, or in
- 12:59Speaker 1: other words, he meets our needs, is because he doesn't
- 13:02Speaker 1: need to offer up sacrifices daily for his own sins,
- 13:05Speaker 1: whereas the priests in the Old Testament. The one thing
- 13:07Speaker 1: you'll see is that they always had a sacrifice for
- 13:10Speaker 1: themselves as well as the people, because they were sinners,
- 13:15Speaker 1: obviously the same as you and I. But Jesus, he
- 13:18Speaker 1: doesn't have to do that. It says that Jesus did
- 13:21Speaker 1: this once for all when he offered up himself. Now
- 13:26Speaker 1: notice here it says that Jesus offered himself up. A
- 13:29Speaker 1: lot of people like to criticize the Bible and God
- 13:33Speaker 1: the Father by saying, well, what kind of father sacrifices
- 13:36Speaker 1: his own son, what kind of a father sends his
- 13:40Speaker 1: son to die for people? Well, Jesus himself offered himself.
- 13:44Speaker 1: It makes that very clear right here. He offered himself
- 13:48Speaker 1: for the sins of the people. Jesus and God the
- 13:52Speaker 1: Father and the Holy Spirit, they are the trinity. They
- 13:55Speaker 1: are one, meaning they all have the same goal. The
- 13:59Speaker 1: Father did not force Jesus to come down to earth
- 14:02Speaker 1: and die for the people. Jesus offered himself to do it,
- 14:06Speaker 1: because Jesus and God the Father and the Holy Spirit
- 14:09Speaker 1: again have the same exact goal. And the goal from
- 14:13Speaker 1: the very beginning has been to live with human beings.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Now sin corrupted all of that which is why Jesus
- 14:20Speaker 1: had to come and sacrifice himself. But eventually that goal
- 14:24Speaker 1: is going to be met. If you look in Revelation
- 14:27Speaker 1: twenty two, the last chapter of Revelation, I believe it
- 14:29Speaker 1: is Jesus's goal is finally accomplished. He lives with his
- 14:33Speaker 1: people finally, and that has been the goal of God,
- 14:36Speaker 1: the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit
- 14:39Speaker 1: from the beginning was to make humanity to be in
- 14:43Speaker 1: fellowship with God. It's a really beautiful picture. But going
- 14:46Speaker 1: back to the idea of Jesus dying once for all.
- 14:49Speaker 1: When it comes to interpreting scripture, my goal is never
- 14:53Speaker 1: to have jen interpret scripture, but to have scripture interpret scripture.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I know I'm not perfect at this. I throw in
- 15:00Speaker 1: my two cents all the time on the podcast, but
- 15:04Speaker 1: my goal is to get scripture to interpret scripture because
- 15:07Speaker 1: it does interpret itself. There are over sixty thousand to
- 15:09Speaker 1: cross references in the Bible. It interprets itself. So when
- 15:14Speaker 1: I read passages like this, and I know that the
- 15:17Speaker 1: Catholic faithful listeners are going to be upset with me,
- 15:20Speaker 1: I have to go by what scripture says first, rather
- 15:24Speaker 1: than what a church father or a pastor or a
- 15:27Speaker 1: preacher or a priest says about the Bible. And I
- 15:30Speaker 1: think for those of you who are Catholic, you know
- 15:32Speaker 1: where I'm going with this, For he did this once
- 15:35Speaker 1: for all when he offered up himself. The Catholic doctrine
- 15:41Speaker 1: teaches that the Eucharist is the physical body and blood
- 15:44Speaker 1: of Jesus, based upon what Luke twenty two says, which
- 15:49Speaker 1: interestingly enough, we read that passage at the beginning of
- 15:52Speaker 1: today's episode, which again says in verse nineteen, Jesus took
- 15:57Speaker 1: the bread when he had given thanks. He broke it
- 15:59Speaker 1: and gave it to them, saying, this is my body,
- 16:00Speaker 1: which is given for you do this in memory of me. Likewise,
- 16:04Speaker 1: he took the cup after supper, saying this cup is
- 16:06Speaker 1: the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out
- 16:09Speaker 1: for you. And Catholics say that Jesus was actually offering
- 16:13Speaker 1: his own flesh and his own blood to his disciples
- 16:17Speaker 1: to drink. So Catholics say that the Eucharist, or what
- 16:20Speaker 1: Protestants would call communion, is the physical body and blood
- 16:24Speaker 1: of Jesus. Like Basically, when the priest holds the wafer
- 16:28Speaker 1: up to heaven, it is signifying the wafer turning into
- 16:32Speaker 1: Jesus's body, and same thing goes for the wine. Now,
- 16:37Speaker 1: another reason why Catholics believe that the Eucharist is a
- 16:41Speaker 1: physical manifestation of Jesus's body and blood is because of
- 16:46Speaker 1: John Chapter six, verses thirty five through sixty three. I'll
- 16:51Speaker 1: read part of it for you. Starting in verse thirty five,
- 16:53Speaker 1: it says Jesus said to them, I am the Bread
- 16:55Speaker 1: of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry,
- 16:58Speaker 1: and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But
- 17:00Speaker 1: I told you that you have seen me, and yet
- 17:02Speaker 1: you don't believe all those whom the Father gives me
- 17:06Speaker 1: will come to me. He who comes to me I
- 17:08Speaker 1: will in no way throw out. So again, that is
- 17:11Speaker 1: Jesus calling himself the bread. Now jumping down to verse
- 17:15Speaker 1: forty one, it says the Jews therefore murmured concerning him,
- 17:18Speaker 1: because he said, I am the Bread which came down
- 17:20Speaker 1: out of heaven. They said, isn't this Jesus the son
- 17:23Speaker 1: of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then
- 17:26Speaker 1: does he say I have come down out of heaven?
- 17:29Speaker 1: Therefore Jesus answered them, don't murmur among yourself no one
- 17:32Speaker 1: can come to me unless the Father who sent me
- 17:34Speaker 1: draws him, and I will raise him up in the
- 17:36Speaker 1: last days, it says, going down to verse forty nine,
- 17:40Speaker 1: your fathers ate the mana in the wilderness, and they died.
- 17:43Speaker 1: This is the bread which comes down out of heaven,
- 17:45Speaker 1: that anyone may eat of it and not die. I
- 17:48Speaker 1: am the living Bread which came down out of heaven.
- 17:51Speaker 1: If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes,
- 17:54Speaker 1: the bread which I will give for the life of
- 17:57Speaker 1: the world is my flesh. And they said, how can
- 18:00Speaker 1: this man give us his flesh to eat. Therefore, Jesus
- 18:04Speaker 1: said to them most certainly, I tell you, unless you
- 18:05Speaker 1: eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink
- 18:07Speaker 1: his blood, you don't have life in yourselves. He who
- 18:10Speaker 1: eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And I will raise him up at the last day.
- 18:15Speaker 1: For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is
- 18:18Speaker 1: drink Indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my
- 18:21Speaker 1: blood lives in me, and I in him, as the
- 18:23Speaker 1: Living Father sent me. And I live because of the Father.
- 18:26Speaker 1: So he who feeds on me will also live because
- 18:28Speaker 1: of me. This is the bread which came down out
- 18:31Speaker 1: of heaven. Not as our fathers ate the manna and died.
- 18:34Speaker 1: He who eats this bread will live forever. So yes,
- 18:37Speaker 1: if you take that for face value, it really does
- 18:39Speaker 1: sound like Jesus is truly offering his own body like
- 18:44Speaker 1: pieces of his own physical flesh for us to eat,
- 18:48Speaker 1: because he says, this is my flesh, this is my blood.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Unless you drink my blood and eat my flesh, you
- 18:54Speaker 1: have no life in you. And my flesh is food indeed,
- 18:57Speaker 1: and my blood is drink indeed. And so Catholics take
- 19:00Speaker 1: this to mean that the Eucharist or Communion is literally
- 19:03Speaker 1: the manifestation of Jesus's body and blood. But again, scripture
- 19:09Speaker 1: always interprets scripture. Turning to Deuteronomy eight, verse three from
- 19:15Speaker 1: the ESV version, here's what it says. And he humbled
- 19:19Speaker 1: you and let you hunger, and fed you with mana
- 19:22Speaker 1: which you did not know, nor did your fathers know,
- 19:25Speaker 1: that he might make you know that man does not
- 19:28Speaker 1: live by bread alone, but man lives by every word
- 19:32Speaker 1: that comes from the mouth of the Lord. When Jesus
- 19:35Speaker 1: is talking about the bread of life, he is directly
- 19:38Speaker 1: referring to that verse because what does he say here?
- 19:41Speaker 1: In John chapter six he talks about the Mana. He says,
- 19:46Speaker 1: in verse forty nine, your fathers ate the mana in
- 19:49Speaker 1: the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which
- 19:52Speaker 1: comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of
- 19:54Speaker 1: it and not die. I am the living bread which
- 19:57Speaker 1: came down out of heaven. If anyone eats this bread,
- 20:00Speaker 1: he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will
- 20:02Speaker 1: give for the life of the world is my flesh.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Jesus is referring to Deuteronomy eight, verse three, which again
- 20:09Speaker 1: says he fed you with manna, which you did not know,
- 20:12Speaker 1: nor did your fathers know, that he might make you
- 20:15Speaker 1: know that man does not live by bread alone, but
- 20:19Speaker 1: man lives by every word that comes from the mouth
- 20:22Speaker 1: of the Lord. That verse from Deuteronomy is directly talking
- 20:26Speaker 1: about Jesus. Man does not live by bread alone, meaning
- 20:31Speaker 1: the physical manifestation of the mana, but they live by
- 20:35Speaker 1: the bread of life, by every word that comes from
- 20:39Speaker 1: the mouth of the Lord. What is Jesus called in
- 20:42Speaker 1: John chapter one in the beginning was the Word, and
- 20:48Speaker 1: the word already existed. Jesus is the Word, and he
- 20:53Speaker 1: is the bread of life. So this is one of
- 20:55Speaker 1: the reasons why I don't believe that the Eucharist is
- 20:57Speaker 1: the true body and blood of Jesus, but rather a
- 21:00Speaker 1: picture of who the bread of life is. And this
- 21:04Speaker 1: is made clear by a couple other things that Jesus says.
- 21:07Speaker 1: As soon as Jesus is finished talking about people eating
- 21:10Speaker 1: his flesh in his blood, he explains that all of
- 21:14Speaker 1: this is done in spirit in verse sixty two of
- 21:18Speaker 1: John chapter six. But Jesus, knowing in himself that his
- 21:21Speaker 1: disciples murmured at this, said to them, does this cause
- 21:25Speaker 1: you to stumble? Then? What if you would see the
- 21:26Speaker 1: son of Man ascending to where he was before. It
- 21:29Speaker 1: is the spirit who gives life. The flesh prophets nothing.
- 21:34Speaker 1: The words that I speak to you are spirit and
- 21:38Speaker 1: our life. Jesus himself says all of this, All of
- 21:42Speaker 1: these words that I just spoke to you are spirit
- 21:46Speaker 1: and our life. Not to mention a few chapters before this,
- 21:49Speaker 1: in John chapter four, Jesus talks to the woman at
- 21:52Speaker 1: the well and he calls himself the living water. That
- 21:56Speaker 1: is another food related reference that Jesus refers to himself,
- 21:59Speaker 1: as in both cases when Jesus refers to himself as
- 22:03Speaker 1: the living Water, and also in John six when he
- 22:05Speaker 1: calls himself the bread of life. Both times he refers
- 22:09Speaker 1: to the spirit. He tells the woman at the well.
- 22:13Speaker 1: God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship
- 22:17Speaker 1: in spirit and in truth. As we know the Holy
- 22:22Speaker 1: Spirit is not physical. We cannot touch him, we cannot
- 22:27Speaker 1: see him. He exists in a realm that we don't
- 22:29Speaker 1: quite understand. God is Spirit, and we worship him in
- 22:33Speaker 1: spirit and in truth, not with any physical manifestations of anything,
- 22:37Speaker 1: but something that comes straight from our souls. But going
- 22:40Speaker 1: back to Hebrews chapter seven, it says that Jesus died
- 22:44Speaker 1: once for all in verse twenty seven, when he offered
- 22:47Speaker 1: up himself. Now, Catholic doctrine teaches the Eucharist is part
- 22:52Speaker 1: of his offering on the cross, so that means that
- 22:55Speaker 1: every single time the Eucharist is offered at mass, Jesus
- 22:59Speaker 1: is again sacrificing himself for the sins of the people.
- 23:05Speaker 1: But Hebrew says that He's done it once and for all,
- 23:10Speaker 1: so he doesn't have to keep doing it over and
- 23:12Speaker 1: over and over again. Now, Catholics try to get past
- 23:15Speaker 1: this verse in Hebrews by saying well, we're not really
- 23:18Speaker 1: sacrificing Jesus every single time in the Eucharist. Rather, Jesus
- 23:24Speaker 1: is outside of time. And because he's outside of time,
- 23:28Speaker 1: you know, he exists on a completely different plane than
- 23:30Speaker 1: we do. And when we offer the Eucharist, we're not
- 23:33Speaker 1: re sacrificing Jesus every single time because Jesus exists outside
- 23:39Speaker 1: of time essentially, And if I'm being honest, that seems
- 23:43Speaker 1: like a really weak argument, because what does Hebrews say,
- 23:47Speaker 1: right here he did this once for all? In Greek,
- 23:52Speaker 1: the word all right here is e fipax, which means
- 23:57Speaker 1: at the same time, Jesus sacrificed himself once for all.
- 24:03Speaker 1: He does not need to do it over and over
- 24:06Speaker 1: and over again. Jesus said to his disciples, do this
- 24:10Speaker 1: in remembrance of me. That is literally the point of
- 24:14Speaker 1: communion and of the Eucharist, to remember his sacrifice. Saying
- 24:19Speaker 1: that the Eucharist is the physical body and blood of Jesus,
- 24:24Speaker 1: I believe starts getting into some idolatrous kind of ideas,
- 24:30Speaker 1: because again God is spirit, and those who worship him
- 24:35Speaker 1: must worship in spirit and in truth. All this being said,
- 24:40Speaker 1: I love my Catholic listeners, But it is no coincidence
- 24:43Speaker 1: to me that I've had so much pushback recently from
- 24:47Speaker 1: my Catholic listeners and this verse pops up. There's just
- 24:51Speaker 1: no coincidence here. So I really hope you take these
- 24:54Speaker 1: points and you listen to them and maybe research a
- 24:57Speaker 1: little bit more what the Catholic Fis teaches about the Eucharist.
- 25:03Speaker 1: But continuing on here and finishing up in verse twenty eight,
- 25:06Speaker 1: for the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness,
- 25:10Speaker 1: but the word of the Oath, which comes after the law,
- 25:13Speaker 1: appoints a son forever who has been perfected. So there
- 25:18Speaker 1: you go. That is how Jesus was made higher than
- 25:21Speaker 1: the heavens. He was revealed as the son of God.
- 25:26Speaker 1: He is not some ordinary human being that became a
- 25:29Speaker 1: high priest. He is the sinless, holy, guiltless Lamb of God,
- 25:35Speaker 1: the sacrifice for our sins, who paid that sacrifice once
- 25:40Speaker 1: and for all, And he is our high priest. When
- 25:45Speaker 1: we believe in him, he can save us to the
- 25:48Speaker 1: uttermost all. Right, faithful listeners, Before I end out today's
- 25:54Speaker 1: episode with a few more last things to say, I'd
- 25:57Speaker 1: love for you to listen to this quick advertisement from
- 26:00Speaker 1: a sponsor. In First Peter, it talks a lot about
- 26:05Speaker 1: how anybody who believes in Jesus becomes priests, which is
- 26:10Speaker 1: really cool. You know, if Jesus is the high priest
- 26:13Speaker 1: in the order of Malchisedeic, that means that there is
- 26:17Speaker 1: a priesthood, just like in the Old Testament, where there
- 26:19Speaker 1: is a high priest and there is a bunch of
- 26:22Speaker 1: lower ranking priests. You and I. When we believe in Jesus,
- 26:26Speaker 1: we become a nation of priests. And Peter, the Apostle
- 26:29Speaker 1: of Jesus, talks about that in the Book of First Peter,
- 26:33Speaker 1: which is such a cool idea, and that goes back
- 26:35Speaker 1: to what Paul said I believe in the Book of Galatians,
- 26:38Speaker 1: where he said there is no Jew or gentile, there
- 26:41Speaker 1: is no slaver free, there is no man or woman,
- 26:45Speaker 1: but everybody is equal in the eyes of God. When
- 26:47Speaker 1: we believe in Jesus, regardless of who we are, regardless
- 26:51Speaker 1: of our status, of our gender, whether the fact that
- 26:55Speaker 1: we are Jewish or gentile, we become a priest under Jesus,
- 27:00Speaker 1: our high priest. And one of the goals of the priests.
- 27:02Speaker 1: If you look at the Old Testament was to go
- 27:04Speaker 1: out into the nation of Israel and teach God's word
- 27:08Speaker 1: to the people. What did Jesus tell his disciples before
- 27:12Speaker 1: he ascended up into heaven. He said, go out into
- 27:15Speaker 1: all the world, preach the Gospel to every creature, baptizing
- 27:19Speaker 1: them in the name of the Father, the Son, and
- 27:21Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to do the commands
- 27:24Speaker 1: that I say. I'm sorry, I still don't have that
- 27:27Speaker 1: last part memorized, but that is essentially the Great Commission
- 27:31Speaker 1: in my own words. Essentially, we do the exact same
- 27:35Speaker 1: thing that the priests did in the Old Testament. So
- 27:38Speaker 1: it's a really neat thing that you and I we
- 27:40Speaker 1: are under a completely different priesthood, and someday it's going
- 27:44Speaker 1: to be absolutely perfect. That is talked about in the
- 27:47Speaker 1: Book of First Peter and also Revelation. Well, faithful listeners,
- 27:52Speaker 1: I hope that you've been enjoying the Book of Hebrews
- 27:54Speaker 1: so far, and I hope to see all of you

- 28:12Speaker 1: of Ezra. Faithful listeners have a fantastic and wonderful rest
