- 0:01We get better at what we do, when we get better at who we
- 0:03are. There's a story behind that.
- 0:06This is your daily message from Chad #1132 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:11Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:13yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:15Josh Kerr. You can get a free copy of my
- 0:17book, The Most Powerful Story in the World, by going to from
- 0:19chad.gumroad.com. The transcript of this message
- 0:22and hundreds of others are always available at
- 0:23www.fromchad.com. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:27You may want a better performance, but upgraded
- 0:29thinking builds a better performer.
- 0:31Here's the story. On July 18th in London, a
- 0:34Scotsman named Josh Kerr ran a mile.
- 0:36In 3 minutes and 42.66 seconds, he broke the previous world
- 0:41record, a record that had stood untouched since 199927 years.
- 0:46That number sat there looking permanent.
- 0:49It didn't fall in a moment, though.
- 0:50It fell in a system months earlier.
- 0:52Kerr didn't quietly hope he announced it.
- 0:55He named it Project Two, 22222 seconds, which is 3 minutes and
- 1:0042 seconds. He said the number out loud in
- 1:02public before he had any right to.
- 1:05Then he built the man who could run it 16 specialists, coaches,
- 1:09a nutritionist, a chef, a mental coach, strength trainers.
- 1:13His physiologist was his mom. He trained at altitude in
- 1:16Albuquerque and slept in an altitude chamber at home.
- 1:19He sat in ice baths timed to exactly 3 minutes and 42
- 1:23seconds, now 5 minutes, not 10342, so that when the pain
- 1:27came on race day, his body already knew how long it had to
- 1:29hold. He wasn't practicing running, he
- 1:32was practicing being someone who does not flinch for 222 seconds.
- 1:36He didn't even run more miles than his competitors, 60 to 70 a
- 1:40week less than most. But every session was specific.
- 1:43Every recovery day was on purpose.
- 1:45He wasn't grinding harder, he was training smarter.
- 1:48And when the gun went off the home crowd screaming, he didn't
- 1:51have to hope it would work, He just had to be who he had
- 1:54already become. Now here's the question for you.
- 1:57What's your mile? What's the number in your life
- 2:00that's been sitting there looking permanent?
- 2:02Whatever it is, you don't get there by wanting it more.
- 2:05Here are four lessons from Josh you can apply to anything you're
- 2:08trying to get better at. One, Make it public.
- 2:11Even if it's one person you tell.
- 2:13There's something magical about declaring a bold goal out loud.
- 2:162 Build a team. Everyone needs a coach.
- 2:19It might be for one narrow piece of what you're doing.
- 2:21They don't have to be involved in your whole life.
- 2:24There's someone out there who can help. 3 Build the mindset.
- 2:27That's the first victory. Don't neglect the battle in your
- 2:30mind. And four, build the system.
- 2:32Life is not a talent game, it's a system game.
- 2:34Train smart, not just hard. Most days, the quality of the
- 2:37training matters more than the quantity.
- 2:39And every time you become a little better version of the
- 2:42person you were, you're breaking a record.
- 2:44The better story to tell yourself is I'm not chasing the
- 2:46record, I'm becoming the person who breaks it.
- 2:49Go name your project 222 today. Tell me a story of a record
- 2:53you're ready to break to from chadsmith@gmail.com and send
- 2:56someone a text and ask them what's the one goal you'd name
- 2:58out loud if you weren't afraid to miss it.
