- 0:00Hour number two, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 0:02Trent Condon, Ken Miller with you until just before the top of
- 0:05the hour. The drive coming up at that
- 0:06time, Heather Lucas, take you until 5:00 still to come on our
- 0:14program, Matt Postons covers the Big 12 for Heartland College
- 0:16Sports. We'll talk to Matt Postons in
- 0:18about 20 minutes or thereabouts. Tom, talk to Dave
- 0:21sinicanzonecoverage.com. Year 30 KFAN up in the Twin
- 0:26Cities where he host Packer preview Saturday morning show as
- 0:30well. Dave Trenton, Ken, thank you for
- 0:31coming on. I want to cover a couple of
- 0:34topics with you. But obviously the news this
- 0:36morning, Jair Alexander officially being released by the
- 0:40Packers, former first round pick guy that had a all world
- 0:43ability. I thought, I thought he was
- 0:45going to be a * and he very well may end up being at that, but
- 0:49it's just injuries. Is this 100% cap related in your
- 0:53mind Dave? Hey, guys, no, I wouldn't say
- 0:56100% at all cap related. I think, you know, three years
- 1:00ago they made him the highest paid cornerback in football.
- 1:03I mean, he had earned that salary on the field.
- 1:06But yeah, I mean, after that happened, he's played what,
- 1:09seven games each the last two seasons.
- 1:12So yes, injuries weighs in. But I think, you know, the the
- 1:17incident in Carolina where he decided to make himself captain,
- 1:20you know, and then he got suspended by the team.
- 1:22And I don't think the relationship was ever exactly
- 1:25great after that. A lot of reading between the
- 1:28lines late last season as he was practicing with the team
- 1:32basically every week from Thanksgiving on.
- 1:34And I think the team really expected him to be ready to
- 1:36play. And he never cleared himself and
- 1:38said he could get back on the field.
- 1:40So I think they were just issues with commitment and loyalty and
- 1:44just it was a relationship that had soured.
- 1:46The injury certainly played a big factor.
- 1:48And when you sign a giant contract a few years later, now
- 1:52you're on the hook for 1820 million a year, year.
- 1:55And it's not, you know, guaranteed.
- 1:56And they could make that decision and decide to move on.
- 1:59They're not a better team without Jair.
- 2:01But ultimately, the locker room might end up being stronger as
- 2:04the season plays out. Last two years, 10 and four when
- 2:07he's in the lineup, 10 and 10 with him out there.
- 2:10But you got to dig a lot deeper than just that to find kind of
- 2:13everything going in there. So where they turn, I know they
- 2:15Hobbs for your $48 million deal and free agency.
- 2:19Look at the cornerback spot and what they've done to that room.
- 2:22What do you expect to see and you mentioned, I mean there's
- 2:25going to be a drop off there, but how concerning is it from a
- 2:27Packer perspective? I've been, I've been pretty
- 2:30vocal about this that ever since they drafted Eric Stokes in the
- 2:33first round in 2021, they haven't drafted a corner before
- 2:36the 7th round since in four subsequent drafts with, you
- 2:40know, where they're drafting first, second round, there have
- 2:42been some legit big time cornerback prospects available
- 2:46and they've ignored the position.
- 2:48And and you know, they feel that Keyshawn Nixon and Nate Hobbs
- 2:51are going to be really good in a cover heavy offense that Jeff
- 2:54Apley plays, which really did not suit Jair, who wanted to
- 2:58just match up man to man on the other team's best receiver,
- 3:01which that's the kind of player he was.
- 3:03But he didn't flourish in this system where they think former
- 3:07nickel guys like Hobbs and Nixon can do just as well on the
- 3:11outside. They feel good about those two
- 3:12guys and they have Carrington Valentine.
- 3:16But yeah, there's a whole lot of question marks.
- 3:18Just today it was announced that wide receiver Bo Melton is being
- 3:22well looked at as a quarterback now like his brother Matt.
- 3:25You know, and they've got a lot of late day three picks on the
- 3:28back end of that roster. But I'd be really surprised if
- 3:32they don't look outside their organization, whether it's a
- 3:35Jalen Ramsey trade or a Sante Samuel move or or even a date
- 3:39maybe we haven't heard about where a team decides that their
- 3:42depth is pretty good there. I just have to think the
- 3:45organization looks to add one more body from outside the
- 3:48organization because the defense looks pretty solid.
- 3:52It was a top 10 unit. They were fine without you, but
- 3:55just knowing he might come back made you believe that defence
- 3:58could be stronger. I I would add another body if I
- 4:01could. Interesting.
- 4:02We'll see where it goes. Broncos got a glut of them.
- 4:05They used the first round pick on Jihadi Baron, they didn't
- 4:10need him. Maybe that means Riley Moss, a
- 4:12former Hawkeye and a kid from Ankeny, is made available.
- 4:16So we'll we'll see where it goes.
- 4:17So what NFC North team does Alexander end up on?
- 4:22Yeah, it's interesting. The temperature up here in the
- 4:24Twin Cities is rather cool on Jair.
- 4:27That's another player that they love to antagonize because of
- 4:30his bravado when it came to whether it was Diggs or
- 4:33Jefferson. So I don't.
- 4:35I mean, they'd certainly welcome him with open arms.
- 4:37There's a need in Minnesota. I hear Baltimore and Buffalo.
- 4:41Buffalo was a team that reportedly was down the line
- 4:45talking trade with Green Bay, but Alexander was not willing to
- 4:48do a new deal in a trade, so that never happened.
- 4:51So I just assumed him had to the AFC.
- 4:53But yeah, living up here as long as I have with all the Packers
- 4:57that have ended up in Minnesota, I would not be surprised at all
- 5:00if he ended up in purple. One thing that I was reading and
- 5:03and a little bit surprised is, and maybe it's just trying to
- 5:06paint a positive picture in the offseason here for the Packers.
- 5:09But one of the reasons that they don't believe that there's going
- 5:12to be a big step in that defensive backfield is not the
- 5:14quarterback spot. But what they've done at the
- 5:17safety spot, how much they've improved at those spots, coupled
- 5:19up with the emergence at the nickel spot was Xavier McKinney
- 5:23that they feel pretty good. Yeah, maybe we're not going to
- 5:25be good as good at cornerback, but our safeties are so much
- 5:28more improved that there shouldn't be much of A drop off.
- 5:30Do you subscribe to that theory? 100% Xavier McKinney was an all
- 5:34pro addition to the safety spot, became the leader of that
- 5:38defense and then they really hit on 4th round pick Evan Williams
- 5:41who really supplanted Javon Bullard.
- 5:44It was the second round pick that you figure would start
- 5:46right away next to McKinney and Bullard was good, got hurt a
- 5:49little bit, but they couldn't take Evan Williams off the field
- 5:52so they really hit on that rookie.
- 5:54Bullard now becomes that nickel corner slash third safety and
- 5:58they do like to run a lot of three safety looks under Jeff
- 6:01Haffley. So yes, they are very strong at
- 6:04that position. What a change from two years
- 6:06ago. They probably had the worst
- 6:07safety room in the league and now they're, I think they're the
- 6:10envy of many or if not most. So yes, I think the way Haffley
- 6:14likes to run his defense, he feels good about 5 or 6 guys in
- 6:17that defensive backfield column, corners, column, safeties.
- 6:21I think he likes the group. I think Packer fans would like
- 6:24to see one more legit quarterback added to the mix.
- 6:28But a strong safety group does lessen some of the concerns.
- 6:32As you've shared with the audience over the years, you do
- 6:35live in the Twin Cities. So I want to ask you about a
- 6:37former quarterback that you, you know, rooted for covered,
- 6:40etcetera, spoke about and that's Aaron Rodgers.
- 6:42Do you is there a correlation to the Vikings had their their
- 6:46mandatory mini camp? They've they've watched Jim
- 6:49McCarthy, they saw Jefferson come in, they work together.
- 6:53Do you think Minnesota was waiting until the last minute
- 6:56before all right, we can go forward with the rookie.
- 6:59We don't need Aaron Rodgers. Was Rodgers waiting for the how
- 7:02would play played out with the Vikings after they got a look at
- 7:05McCarthy that this year do you think?
- 7:07Yeah, I do think so. I think he looked at the spot up
- 7:10here in Minnesota as his best potential opportunity to win a
- 7:13Super Bowl with what's around him in this organization, the
- 7:18talent the Vikings have and maybe the competition in the NFC
- 7:21versus the gauntlet of quarterbacks you got to go
- 7:23through in the AFC right now. So yeah, I think in his mind
- 7:27that nobody can get inside Aaron Rodgers mind, but I have to
- 7:30believe that he thought if if the Vikings were soured all in
- 7:34McCarthy and decided to wait one more year with him, this was his
- 7:37best shot of the Super Bowl. Because I do think Rogers truly
- 7:41is only playing to try to win a Super Bowl.
- 7:43Pittsburgh seemed like the most logical landing spot to me over
- 7:46the last four months. Just as a team that desperately
- 7:49needed a quarterback and it was a playoff team the year before
- 7:52and have a coach that could deal with them.
- 7:54I don't look at Pittsburgh as a legit Super Bowl contender, but
- 7:58I would not be surprised if Rogers has a successful year
- 8:01with that team this year. So your crystal ball says the
- 8:04successful year go the other way.
- 8:07A guy in his 40s that has been known as a bit of a locker room
- 8:11issue there. If it goes the other way, could
- 8:14you see Aaron Rodger just say in early October?
- 8:17Hell with this, I'm out of here? Yeah, it's certainly possible.
- 8:21And Trent, they had a gauntlet of the schedule in Pittsburgh.
- 8:24It's the third toughest in the AFCI.
- 8:26Didn't look at how the first six play out.
- 8:29Certainly the NFL would like him to at least wait through Week 8
- 8:32when they face the Packers on Sunday Night Football in
- 8:35Pittsburgh, which should be rather ratings every night.
- 8:38So yeah, I mean that that's a possibility, but I would be
- 8:41surprised. I still think the arm is there.
- 8:43He's a year removed from the Achilles.
- 8:45Arthur Smith's a long time offensive coordinator who knows
- 8:49how to get the best out of guys. They're offensive lines of
- 8:52question. He does have a legit number one
- 8:54guy. And if Caleb Johnson could
- 8:56ignite that running back room, I think that make things a lot
- 8:59easier because they like to play play action under Arthur Smith.
- 9:02And if you don't have a running game, that's hard to do.
- 9:04So I don't know. I I find it interesting.
- 9:08As I said, successful. I think they get into the
- 9:10playoffs. Beyond that, it might be too
- 9:12tough to expect Super Bowl from Pittsburgh, in my opinion.
- 9:16Dave, sinicanzonecoverage.com and KFAN up in the Twin Cities.
- 9:20Dave, thanks for jumping on for a few minutes.
- 9:21Appreciate it. We'll talk to you down the road,
- 9:23bud. Thank you.
- 9:24Yep, anytime guys. Good to hear from you.
- 9:26Dave Sinican is we check in on Green Bay.
- 9:30Where do you check in on Green Bay as far as the division goes?
- 9:33Oh, third, I had a second or third.
- 9:36So you still you still give me a decent.
- 9:38Chance. Yeah, Yeah, I think.
- 9:39There's Lions won to you still, despite the defections.
- 9:44It's going to not be nearly as good of a division this year.
- 9:48Fairpoint, I mean, last year was elite.
- 9:50I mean that was unbelievable. Rag.
- 9:51Now the Centre retiring when he did, that's a blow to the Lions.
- 9:57Can the Bears win it? The division?
- 9:59You don't think so there a year? Well, if you weren't a Bears
- 10:03fan. Want to be a different
- 10:04conversation? Right.
- 10:08I, I think it's, I think there's.
- 10:10It's up for grabs. I still like Detroit.
- 10:14I don't like them as much as I did last year.
- 10:16They're not a Super Bowl contended.
- 10:19I don't think so either. I loved them last year and I
- 10:21thought that this that was their year.
- 10:23They're a talented team. Without a doubt, without a
- 10:26doubt. But the changes in staff.
- 10:28Both coordinators huge. A year older with golf, yeah.
- 10:33Everything kind of was breaking their way until it didn't.
- 10:37And they had a ton of injuries last year.
- 10:38More teams. I don't there couldn't have been
- 10:41a team who had more starters knocked out, a legitimate Super
- 10:44Bowl team. That and their year wasn't
- 10:47derailed. I mean they were swinging right
- 10:48till the end. So Lions are going to be worse,
- 10:52the Vikings are going to be worse.
- 10:54Because of the uncertainty at quarterback.
- 10:57Well, that's a part, and that's Minnesota.
- 11:00Right, but they fix the offensive line, they think.
- 11:04They'll have JJ McCarthy, that same turtle defense could be
- 11:10better, but we saw it. It's just two years ago after
- 11:15year number one, OK, OC everything what they won all
- 11:18these close games. Look, he's a great coach, but
- 11:21he's not some kind of guy that has figured out the only he's
- 11:24the first coach ever to figure out always how to win close
- 11:26games. It's not how it goes.
- 11:28It evens out and evened out in year 2.
- 11:31They took a step back Year 3 and we got those breaks again.
- 11:34Year 4 step back. That's the way the NFL goes.
- 11:37Their their win. Total is what, 8 1/2?
- 11:39Only? It's not very high when you
- 11:42know, in considering what it was, how many games they won
- 11:44last year. I'm not sold Packers.
- 11:51They'll be fine. They got a solid quarterback.
- 11:55It's organizationally they'll just be solid, which nine and
- 11:59eight solid could be enough to get a wild card.
- 12:02Did have you spent any time trying to figure out, I mean,
- 12:05is, is there a team that you've got your eye on?
- 12:08There was one in the NFC, not in the division.
- 12:13Are they picked to win their division?
- 12:15They are not. This is interesting.
- 12:18Not and I don't think they're a Super Bowl contender.
- 12:20You don't, no. You just think they're going to
- 12:22beat their win, go over their total.
- 12:24I was looking more at division odds.
- 12:26Division odds that were. Intriguing.
- 12:28So you think they can win their division, but they can't win at
- 12:31all? Yes.
- 12:32So would that be a team from the South?
- 12:33Is it Atlanta? It is Atlanta I.
- 12:38Don't think they can win it all either.
- 12:39No, I like panics I think. I do too.
- 12:42There was enough in that glimpse that we got from him a year ago.
- 12:46You should be an upgrade over old Kirk Cousins that we saw
- 12:48last year. Bijan Robinson's a terrific
- 12:51running back. What about Kyle Pitts?
- 12:53I can't. I I was so wrong on him.
- 12:55I thought this guy's going to be a, you know, go ahead and fit
- 12:58him for the gold jacket. But that's what happens at that
- 13:01position. I know, I know.
- 13:03You don't draft a tight end. Not that high.
- 13:06No, it does it more times than not.
- 13:08It doesn't work now. He's still only 24.
- 13:10No, I know, but he hasn't shown anything.
- 13:12Trent. I mean nothing.
- 13:13This is what, year four or three?
- 13:1637 touchdowns? No, this will be year. 410
- 13:20touchdowns in his career, 200 catches, about 900 yards a year.
- 13:26It's not awful. Yeah, but it should have been
- 13:28better. When you pick that high, you
- 13:29should be. Better.
- 13:31So you so you think Atlanta, what's their total?
- 13:34Don't know their total. I just saw Tampa's the pretty
- 13:37prohibitive favorite. Now to win the.
- 13:39Love them to you. I don't either.
- 13:41I like Baker. I like him a lot more than I
- 13:43thought I would. This is the great a great spot
- 13:46for him. He's got his team, but.
- 13:48I think Todd Bull's on a hot seat, perhaps.
- 13:51Yeah, definitely could be futures division winner, and I'm
- 13:55bringing it up here. AFCNFCS.
- 13:58There it is. This is from DraftKings.
- 14:02The Buccaneers are even odds in that topsy turvy division.
- 14:06Never. Too short.
- 14:08The long shots, The Saints, who might be the worst team?
- 14:11They could be. They're going to draft Arch
- 14:13Manning. We will finish last and get Arch
- 14:15Manning. So that leaves two options, the
- 14:19Falcons and plus 240 or the Panthers a four to one.
- 14:24Now that's in common, look at you.
- 14:26Team to me. OK.
- 14:28All right. Continues to go forward.
- 14:31We both like McMillan out of Arizona.
- 14:34Thielen's still there. Xavier Legette, South Carolina.
- 14:37I like him a lot. You know who I keep waiting for
- 14:42to have a breakout year for them?
- 14:43JC Horn, who I thought might be better than Sir Tan when they
- 14:47drafted him. Really.
- 14:49I love JC Horn, and he's been he's been hurt all the time.
- 14:52Josie Jewel is still there, hanging out, still making a
- 14:56living in the NFL starting. That's good for him.
- 14:59Yeah, I think Atlanta's the team, but not at that price.
- 15:01What about Arizona? I keep coming back to the
- 15:04Cardinals. What is it about?
- 15:06I don't. Know I I just, I don't know.
- 15:09All right, Cardinals depth chart.
- 15:11Let's let's see if I can. I bet Gannon Coach of the year.
- 15:15Now, I don't hate that because you know my theory.
- 15:17An NFL Coach of the year. It's never going to be an Andy
- 15:20Reid, It's not going to be Kevin O'Connell, it's not going to be
- 15:22guys that great records last year.
- 15:23Bill checks from right never won it.
- 15:25Is that right? Yeah, I believe you're right.
- 15:27He. Never won so that yes, Andy
- 15:30Reid, cross off, cross off those kind of people, yeah.
- 15:32You know, Shanahan, the 49ers bounce back, He's not going to
- 15:34win coach of the year. No, he's just not no and it
- 15:36makes that award I think a lot more fun to bet in because you
- 15:39can get some good prices and I. Think I got him 20 something to
- 15:431. Kyler matured last year.
- 15:47Did he mature last year or did I want him to mature last?
- 15:51Year. Maybe that's it.
- 15:53Marvin Harrison's the dude for me.
- 15:55You start there. So Kyler, looking at his numbers
- 15:58from last year, now 27 years old, a season ago,
- 16:05interception's about the same, 21 touchdowns, 11 picks running
- 16:09around. I mean, none of the numbers
- 16:12actually changed that much from him.
- 16:14So if I'm betting Gannon to be coach of the year, should I
- 16:16sprinkle in Marvin Harrison to be Offensive Player of the Year?
- 16:20Oh, he's not going to put up those kind of nights.
- 16:22I don't know. I mean, coming out of college,
- 16:24he was the next thing I. Don't know if he's fast enough.
- 16:28What kind of numbers we looking at here?
- 16:30Like you'd have to have to be a wide receiver to win that award.
- 16:36What did Cooper Cup have when he did it?
- 16:38It was like 150 catches it. Was a crazy number, but you'd.
- 16:41Think that Barbara Harris is going to catch 125 balls?
- 16:44Is that what cup cut did he break a hundo?
- 16:46It was like 140. In a single year, yeah, that
- 16:49Cooper Cup. Did Cooper cut?
- 16:51No, he didn't catch that many. Cooper Cup career statistics go
- 16:55back. Yeah, go back to it.
- 16:58He caught in his MVP season of 2021 a 145 patches for 1947
- 17:05yards and 16 touchdowns. At minimum if Marvin Harrison is
- 17:11going to win this award. No, he's not a. 120 catches you.
- 17:14Talked me out of. It thank you. 1600 yards,
- 17:17probably 12 touch and I don't think that's going to be enough.
- 17:21Don't do that. No, I'm not doing that.
- 17:22Don't do that. I'm going to find a protector of
- 17:25the year. Protector.
- 17:26Hammer, the Protector of the year the new market in in sports
- 17:30betting. Paris Johnson is their left
- 17:32tackle in Arizona. Now you're on.
- 17:35Here we go. Paris Johnson, You're going to
- 17:39reacquaint yourself with offensive lineman if you're
- 17:41betting this one. I'm betting Quinn Miners.
- 17:44Quinn Miner OK, My Bronco. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:47Not bad theory, no? I mean, he was, he got snubbed
- 17:50last year for All Pro. No, he made All Pro and didn't
- 17:53make the Pro Bowl. That's what it was.
- 17:56We'll take your time out. We're going to come back to talk
- 17:58to our buddy Matt Postons from Heartland College Sports as we
- 18:02continue on here on a Tuesday, Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 18:06Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome
- 18:09back. Coming up on 1:30 on a Tuesday,
- 18:13top of the hour, turn things over to the DRIVE.
- 18:16Heather and Lucas take you until 5:00 overtime Iowa at that
- 18:20point, from 5:00 until 6:00. All right, working on Matt
- 18:24Postons from Heartland College Sports.
- 18:26So just so I'm clear, we had Brent Bloomer earlier on the
- 18:30program. We talked about Texas Tech
- 18:32rushing to get all of these this money spent ahead of the July
- 18:371st deadline, but these athletes are grandfathered in, right?
- 18:42Right. It's the next time, it's next.
- 18:45They can no longer break these thresholds.
- 18:47So if you're an athlete, you wanted to get to, you wanted to
- 18:50get your money, you want to get your bank prior to the deadline.
- 18:54And since they did, there's nothing that can be done about
- 18:57Texas Tech paying 55,000,000 going forward right here in the
- 19:01year. And now going forward, yes,
- 19:03everybody has to play by the same.
- 19:04Starting July 1st. Starting July 1st.
- 19:07Yes, that's the $20.5 million. Now my question still remains.
- 19:12How does it get divvied up? No, 'cause I think I mean it's
- 19:16going to football, basketball for.
- 19:17Right. Sure, momentarily by the.
- 19:20Way yes. My question is how this looks,
- 19:24how this is going to eventually go as it pertains to the NIL
- 19:29component. All right, we saw yesterday
- 19:31there's now a separate entity Brent Bloom was talking about
- 19:33that. Well, it's we will, but it's we
- 19:35will go into the athletic department if.
- 19:37Once I was flight something, yes.
- 19:39Let's get Matt postings on here. Well, you know what?
- 19:45We'll we'll do that from Heartland College Sports.
- 19:47Just want to see what pick his brain a little bit on how he
- 19:50thinks they're going to handle it.
- 19:52So we'll get Matt on here. We will do that.
- 19:54Trent's plays of the day, by the way, still to come, Matt, I
- 19:57didn't want to keep you on hold when when Trent and I were
- 19:59having this conversation. So it's flight, flight, not
- 20:03flight, line flight, whatever, flight, whatever.
- 20:06OK. But it's just all right, So I
- 20:09know people are not comfortable giving to a collective.
- 20:10So this is going to the F. That goes right into the
- 20:13athletic department, yeah. But I believe that that just
- 20:15goes into that 20.5 million. Well, so it's not, it's not
- 20:19above and beyond, right? This just makes it easier for
- 20:22the athletic department. Maybe they're on, they get.
- 20:24They don't have to stick to the team.
- 20:26They have to, yes. Gotcha.
- 20:28Matt Poston's Heartland College Sports joins us.
- 20:30Matt, does this make your head hurt like it does mine?
- 20:33Yeah, because I don't think that everyone has a clear
- 20:37understanding of it as well. I mean, you know, like yesterday
- 20:41Texas Tech released info that they're folding their their
- 20:44matador club collected into the athletic department, which a lot
- 20:48of power conference schools are doing now, because the house
- 20:52settlement allows them to do that.
- 20:54There's also an report, I think Brandon Marcelo, one of the guys
- 20:59at CBS, said that, you know, Tech's giving 55 million to
- 21:02their football team this year. I think a lot of that's getting
- 21:05paid out before July 1, which that stuff doesn't get included
- 21:09in the settlement and then the rest comes after that.
- 21:12I, I have always been of the belief that, yeah, there's going
- 21:16to be revenue to be shared in that 20.5 million.
- 21:18But I, I, I don't think NIL is going to be counted in that as
- 21:22much as people think it's going to be.
- 21:24Because if, if you're telling me at the Matador Club that my NIL
- 21:30is going to go toward your Rev share and, and the cap is 20.5
- 21:34million, then I'm like, well, then I'm going to start giving
- 21:37money the kids down under the table again like they were five
- 21:40years ago. So I, I, I don't think that I
- 21:43think we have a new set of problems.
- 21:45I think it's great that athletes are going to get the opportunity
- 21:47to share in revenue. We can get paid on a consistent
- 21:50basis that I think we we have treated one set of problems for
- 21:54another set of problems. And until these guys decide,
- 21:57hey, you know, you can get your Rev share, you can get an IL,
- 22:01you know, we're going to continue to have these issues.
- 22:04You went into something that we've been talking a lot today
- 22:08about the enforcement, the NCAA, the new arm.
- 22:12Do you believe that there's going to be teeth behind it?
- 22:14I mean, there has to be in order for this to work.
- 22:16But is it believe it when you see it or that this is going to
- 22:19be real, that if you break a rule, if you are paying people
- 22:22under the table, you're going to have to pay where you as it kind
- 22:25of gets to that point? Well, first of all, NCAA is not
- 22:29involved. So you can talk, you can put
- 22:32them in the bucket over there and and they're just going to
- 22:34sit there and Charlie Baker's going to have this popcorn and
- 22:36see if the power floor commissioners can can actually
- 22:38do this. That's going to be the hard
- 22:41part. You know, you part of the reason
- 22:43that there is revenue sharing and that they're supposed to be
- 22:46a hard cap is because you want things to be fair for everybody.
- 22:49Everybody has to be held to the same standard and hold
- 22:52themselves to the same standard. If everybody's willing to do
- 22:56that, then yeah, this will work. But I'm interested to see what
- 23:01the enforcement end is going to look like.
- 23:03Because at the end of the day, the four power conference
- 23:05commissioners, so the four power conferences are going to be the
- 23:08ones in this college sports Commission that are going to
- 23:10enforce all this. And the first significant case
- 23:13that comes forward, maybe the first kid that doesn't get their
- 23:15NIL deal approved through Deloitte or, you know, the first
- 23:19major violation that gets reported, how are they going to
- 23:21handle it? That's going to be the test case
- 23:23as to whether A, they're willing to punish one another and B,
- 23:27perhaps more importantly, you know, be willing to investigate
- 23:30each other, even if it's say like, you know, the Big 12 got
- 23:33an investigative arm and they have to investigate one of their
- 23:36schools on this. How hard are they going to
- 23:38approach it? I would almost think of it like
- 23:40if you're, if you're a Big 12 school and you do something
- 23:44wrong and other, another enforcement arm for another
- 23:46conference should be the one to the to investigate and force or
- 23:50somebody independent. And I don't think any of that's
- 23:52been worked out yet, but that's going to be a really interesting
- 23:54thing to watch because the NCAA has been a complete failure at
- 23:58it for 20 years. I'm not certain that the the
- 24:01conferences that are going to be involved in this are going to be
- 24:03any better at it. And I'm, I'm curious to see,
- 24:06because what we've seen now and now that everybody can pay,
- 24:09we've seen the SEC dominance in football kind of go away, right?
- 24:13I mean, they're not winning like they won in the past.
- 24:16If all of a sudden the SEC goes back to that where they're
- 24:19winning national one national championship after another, do
- 24:23we in our heart of hearts know that they're cheating?
- 24:28Fair question. I mean, there's certainly more
- 24:31balance now. I would say that I think there's
- 24:33more balance and talent because money can help equalize things
- 24:38in that regard. But you've got a point about,
- 24:42you know, if we go back to a balanced system and everyone is
- 24:48spending the same amount of money and the SEC goes back to
- 24:50being, you know, dominant again, yeah, I think we could, you
- 24:55could certainly see some folks accusing other schools of paying
- 24:59under the table. But I I think we're always going
- 25:01to have money under the table. The one, the one nice thing
- 25:04about the last four years has been all the money's been out
- 25:06there. You know, that's the one good
- 25:08thing about it. The bad thing about this new
- 25:11process is that they don't do it right.
- 25:13You know, then you're going to go back to having money being
- 25:16paid at the table and then we're right back to where we started
- 25:205-6 years ago. So it's going to be, it's going
- 25:23to be really interesting to watch.
- 25:24The house settlement clearly is a framework for all of this.
- 25:29Now it is up to everybody involved to enforce it and try
- 25:32and get it right. With that, the Big 12 as a whole
- 25:37in a better place going forward than they have been the last
- 25:40couple of years. Or is this going to be a
- 25:42demerit? Is this something that is not
- 25:44going to be working out as well for the Big 12 individuals?
- 25:46Yes, Texas. Texas in good shape.
- 25:48I'm betting them both football and basketball.
- 25:50But in general, the conference as a whole in a better spot now
- 25:53with these new enforcements. I think they're probably in a
- 25:58neutral spot right now. It's so hard to know because
- 26:01like we just talked about the enforcement, you don't know how
- 26:03hard these guys are going to enforce it.
- 26:05I think most of the schools are going to share at that 20
- 26:08million level, UCF and Houston. I think you're going to lag a
- 26:11little bit the first year, but they'll catch up with everyone
- 26:13eventually. I think the schools that have
- 26:16taken the time to really build up their NIL arm, like Texas
- 26:20Tech, like Iowa State, like a few other schools out there in
- 26:23the conference, are going to have a leg up because they're
- 26:25going to be able to handle the NIL deals in house and make sure
- 26:29those get distributed properly. You know, I think the money is
- 26:33supposed to be the same across the board.
- 26:35So if the money is the same across the board for everybody,
- 26:38it's probably a little bit of a boost to the Big 12.
- 26:40But if we get into the point where, you know, we do see $40
- 26:43million football budgets because you're combining the Rev share
- 26:46with the NIL, which I think is where we're going to end up, it
- 26:49would be just completely honest. And I think that's where we
- 26:51should end up. To me NIL has always been the
- 26:53sweetener in this. If you're going to get a Rev
- 26:56share you should be allowed to do whatever you want in nil.
- 26:59If you're a quarterback that can make 2 million off the NIL plus
- 27:02your refs year, to me the NIL should not count against the
- 27:06cap. The the cap should be the Rev
- 27:09share. But if we get to a point where
- 27:10we have 40 or $50 million, you know, football budgets out
- 27:13there, which is where I think we'll go, then, yeah, that could
- 27:16be disadvantageous to a certain group of Big 12 schools.
- 27:19What what about some of the power brokers like an Ohio
- 27:23State? I mean that we know that they're
- 27:24spending money and and they were doing nothing illegal.
- 27:28They had some well heeled boosters in the past that were
- 27:31willing to write those checks. Might schools like Ohio State,
- 27:35knowing the now the the new landscape that we're about to
- 27:38embark on, might, you know, might the Big 10 see more
- 27:41parity? Might Ohio State not be as
- 27:44dominant in the years ahead if indeed there is enforcement of
- 27:48this quote cap? It's possible.
- 27:51It certainly is. I mean, you look at the NFL,
- 27:54there's a hard cap there. You know, you cannot exceed, you
- 27:57know, whatever the cap is that year on your payroll and you,
- 28:01your cap comes out of the top 53 players in the offseason, the
- 28:05top 51 paid players in the regular season.
- 28:08There's there's consistency across all 32 of those teams.
- 28:13If you can build consistency across all 130 something teams
- 28:17in FBS, first of all, congratulations to you because
- 28:20you've threaded the needle that nobody could thread for over 100
- 28:22years #2 then, yeah, you could see parity in every conference.
- 28:26And when you think about how popular college football is and
- 28:30how popular these different conferences are, parody across
- 28:33conferences I think would be fantastic in the long run
- 28:36because then you really, truly don't know who would win the
- 28:39national championship every year.
- 28:41I mean, right now you've got a pool of about, I'd say 2530
- 28:45schools that have a legitimate shot.
- 28:47You know, we could get to a point if, if this thing works
- 28:49properly where, you know, maybe 50-60 schools have a legitimate
- 28:53shot every year. And that would be great for the
- 28:55game. It'd be great for fans, It'd be
- 28:57great for, for the stand bases across the Big 12.
- 29:00It would just it would just make for a better product and
- 29:03ultimately would end up making everybody more money.
- 29:06Dion's made plenty of money. Dion's not going to be around,
- 29:09though, for football camps happening at Colorado.
- 29:12Can you fill us in on the details and what is just yet
- 29:15another strange turn of Dion? And he's not well.
- 29:18Yeah, Back in Texas, 57 years old, kind of.
- 29:21I don't know. I got that that eerie feeling as
- 29:23I was reading through the article.
- 29:24From US toes amputated. Or yeah, he did.
- 29:27He he did have a couple of toes amputated a couple of years ago.
- 29:30In fact, this was when the TCU job opened up after they let
- 29:34Gary go. He actually interviewed for that
- 29:37job while he was away from Jackson State and he was
- 29:40recuperating from that surgery. At first of all, I didn't know
- 29:45he had a home in Canyon, TX. That's brand new information to
- 29:48me. I think that's supposed to be
- 29:51Canton, TX. But you know, I, I don't know
- 29:54exactly what the, the health situation is.
- 29:56I don't think that was disclosed based on what I've seen out
- 29:59there today. Yes, you're right.
- 30:00He had two toes amputated back in 2021.
- 30:04This could be that, this could be something else.
- 30:09You know, he's always very open about, you know, the issues that
- 30:12he's dealt with throughout his life.
- 30:14You know, so I I don't have anything more than anybody else
- 30:17at ESPN or, or us at Heartland have right now, just that he's,
- 30:21you know, he's dealing with something and that, you know,
- 30:24he's not going to be around for a while.
- 30:25And that's, you know, admittedly that's bad news for Colorado,
- 30:28you know, not right now, But if you still, you know, dealing
- 30:31with dealing with us in August when football practice begins.
- 30:35And that certainly creates issues for the Buffaloes this
- 30:38coming season. But the transition from his son
- 30:40at quarterback and Travis Hunter to, you know, basically a new
- 30:44group of student athletes there, Colorado.
- 30:47Do do you think that there's maybe 31 NFL teams that have a
- 30:50little remorse that they didn't push the door on their on their
- 30:53draft card when they turned it in?
- 30:56By all accounts, he's doing very well in Brown's training camp.
- 30:59I mean, I know the competitions, you know, it's not great there,
- 31:03but I, I think he's, he's opening some eyes throughout the
- 31:06league just how good maybe he is.
- 31:10I, I always felt like he was a good NFL prospect coming out of
- 31:14college. I, I, I could see him going in
- 31:17the first round, but I where he ended up actually being taken, I
- 31:20think was well, well below where he should have actually been
- 31:24taken. He should have been taken no, no
- 31:25later than day 2. He was a highly accurate
- 31:29quarterback in college. And I don't care what system
- 31:32you're running. You know your, your completion
- 31:34percentage from college to Pro is going to come down a few
- 31:36percent. But when you're when you're
- 31:38throwing the ball and you're completing 70% of your passes,
- 31:41if you get to the NFL and you're completing 65% of your passes
- 31:44just based on the change in schemes and everything, that's
- 31:48still terrific that that'll keep you a starter in the NFL.
- 31:51He got pro level coaching from Pat Shermer, their offensive
- 31:55coordinator last year. He's been around pro level
- 31:58coaches for, you know, 3 or 4 years now.
- 32:00I mean, you know, he's, I think he has the ability to be a
- 32:04starter in the NFL, maybe not right away, and that may be to
- 32:07his benefit. Frankly, I didn't think
- 32:09Cleveland was the best place for him because I would have liked
- 32:11to have seen him land in the place where they had a veteran
- 32:13quarterback that he could sit behind for a year like Patrick
- 32:16did in Kansas City and kind of get his feet under him.
- 32:19But I feel like in two or three years he can be a solid NFL
- 32:23starting quarterback. I don't know if he's going to
- 32:25be. Maybe his trajectory is like a
- 32:28Baker Mayfield, where he struggles for a while and then
- 32:30finds the right place and ends up becoming a start.
- 32:33Maybe his trajectory is like a Patrick or he, you know, hits it
- 32:36after year 2 or year 3. But I think he's, I think he's
- 32:39going to end up being a better NFL quarterback than his draft
- 32:42position would have suggested. One final thing is we saw Texas
- 32:46Tech, well, what they've done in the portal, the way that they've
- 32:49spent what they did in College World Series for softball and on
- 32:52and on and on. Is this a blip because where
- 32:54have they been? You know, we heard about T Boone
- 32:56Pickens, we knew about obviously Texas and Oklahoma.
- 32:58The way that they spend. Is this new money coming into
- 33:02Texas Tech athletics or and is there sustained sustainability
- 33:06maybe behind it? I think there's sustainability
- 33:09behind it. You know, in Texas and Oklahoma
- 33:11announced they were leading the conference.
- 33:14You know, after everybody kind of got over the hangover of them
- 33:16leaving, certain schools realized there's a vacuum here.
- 33:22Texas Tech was one of the first ones to figure that out.
- 33:25Kirby went right to work on that football facility.
- 33:28That was the first big thing that they announced.
- 33:30The football facility that they just opened last year, Matador
- 33:34Club, has been, I think the best NIO arm in the Big 12.
- 33:38They got to work right away and they gave $25,000 to every
- 33:42athlete at Texas Tech, not just the football team.
- 33:44They paid attention to everybody.
- 33:46I think that got everybody's attention.
- 33:48So when you consider the fact that they have not just paid
- 33:51attention to football, they paid attention to their Big 5 sports.
- 33:54They spent $1,000,000 on the pitcher in softball, majority
- 33:58candidate, and they're going to bring her back for another year
- 34:01and they got to the Women's College World Series.
- 34:03I don't think it's a blip. I think they've been planning
- 34:06for this moment for a few years now.
- 34:07And now you have Joey McGuire in a position where he has more
- 34:11talent than he's ever had. They've got a yeah, I think they
- 34:15stack up with Arizona State from a talent standpoint.
- 34:18I don't think his jobs in the line, but I do think it's we've
- 34:21given you everything you need, everything you possibly ask for.
- 34:25Now go do something that Texas Tech hasn't done since 1996 and
- 34:30go win a conference, Win it outright, which I didn't do in
- 34:3396 when they shared the Southwest Conference tower 94, I
- 34:36should say. And, you know, get the Red
- 34:39Raiders in the College Football Playoffs.
- 34:40So I don't think it's a blip. I think that they've finally got
- 34:44the right mix of coaches, the right mix of NIL, the right mix
- 34:47of facilities. You know, they're they're one of
- 34:50those teams that I think for the next three or five years when
- 34:52your Mark talked at the Big 12 championship game about he
- 34:55thinks at some point somebody will rise to the top.
- 34:58Tech is one of those schools that he think that I think has
- 35:01the ability to rise the top and be a dominant school in this
- 35:04conference when it comes to football and certainly other
- 35:06sports as well. I couldn't agree with you more.
- 35:09I'd like them in both Batman's basketball and in football this
- 35:12year. We'll see what happens.
- 35:14As always, Matt Poston's invaluable information.
- 35:17Appreciate your contribution whenever we have you on.
- 35:20We'll talk to you down the road. Matt, thank you.
- 35:22Have a great day. All right, thanks, guys.
- 35:24Yep, good to talk to you. Matt Poston's Heartland College
- 35:26sports take your time out trends, plays of the day or
- 35:28next. Miller and Condon our final
- 35:30segment on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:32All right, final couple of minutes here on a Tuesday.
- 35:34Miller and Condon with you. Drive is next.
- 35:38Heather and Lucas two to five. Overtime Iowa 5 to 6.
- 35:41A snippet from this morning, Ellie Clef, Sean Roberts from
- 35:45Trent and I and then something from the drive never talked
- 35:48about. We didn't talk a lot about the
- 35:49baseball from yesterday. This catch by Denzel Clark, the
- 35:53center fielder for the now a Sacramento ways, By the way,
- 35:57they're breaking ground this week in Vegas, which is kind of
- 36:00surprising, at least to me. I'm not sure they got to that
- 36:02point, but they are. But the catch is as good as
- 36:06you're ever going to see, yeah. It's great.
- 36:07It was absolutely wonderful. I had not seen it until you had
- 36:11alerted me to it and then I was making sounds in the studio
- 36:14before we went out there because it was that good.
- 36:16It was just, it was outstanding. Yeah, Denzel Clark, just a
- 36:19rookie Canadian boy, got called up when when the A's were in
- 36:22Toronto, his hometown. So that was a pretty good touch
- 36:26on the A's part to do that. But he is A solid center
- 36:30fielder, that's for sure. All right, enough about the A's.
- 36:33What are you betting tonight? I have 4 baseball games and one
- 36:38in the WNBA after a 4 no Monday. Oh, so let's see if we can stay
- 36:44hot now. Yesterday it was some favorites,
- 36:48today it is dogs. Let's start things up in
- 36:51Detroit, where the 1st place Tigers are getting a + 115
- 36:55against Polovich. Yeah, I know they're going with
- 36:57an opener, but still. Plus 1/15 the Tigers.
- 37:00Yeah, Smash. Plus money on deed, Yeah.
- 37:03Mackenzie Gore's playing better. They are playing better, not
- 37:06great. Uh huh, Right, that's true.
- 37:07Mackenzie Gore, I think I start him.
- 37:09And where's? He gonna finish his year.
- 37:11In LA, No, don't do this, I tell.
- 37:16It's gross. I will be betting him though.
- 37:18In a Nationals uniform plus. 134 that's the amazing.
- 37:22Mets against Canning, who has to take a step back.
- 37:26Trendy's been great. Speaking of great, Tyler
- 37:28Malley's been great and he will remain great against his former
- 37:31team, the Minnesota Twins. Simeon Woods, Richardson off the
- 37:35scrap peep. Give me the Rangers plus one O
