Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Inside The Tape: Is Something Different About Jalen Hurts, Eagles Pass Offense?
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome back to Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell.
- 0:11On Inside the Birds, I'm Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan,
- 0:15and of course we bring back Greg Cosell to break
- 0:17down the tape of the eagles twenty to seventeen win
- 0:20over the Chiefs. We already did the defense, and as
- 0:23I mentioned in the last show, we are contractually obligated
- 0:26to have Greg break down the offense for us. Some
- 0:30might call it offensive, Greg, and not mean that as
- 0:33a compliment, but hey, once again, we talk about this
- 0:36a lot. The Eagles did what they needed to do
- 0:38to win, and they did not turn the ball over.
- 0:41But in general, as you watched the Eagle offense, what
- 0:44jumped out to you?
- 0:46Speaker 2: You know, I'm just trying to figure out the pass game.
- 0:49I mean, look, I'm not there, but you know, for
- 0:52two weeks now, the pass game has really not been
- 0:55very good. And I'm not blaming anyone because I'm not there.
- 0:58And you know, we know that the pass game has
- 1:01had success in years past. Are they a true passing
- 1:04team based on the way you think of the rest
- 1:06of the league. They're not. We know that. I mean,
- 1:08we spoke about this in the pregame show that. In
- 1:11the eighteen games that Jalen hurt started last year, not
- 1:15counting the Washington game when he got hurt early and
- 1:17left the game, he threw for under two hundred yards
- 1:21and eight of those games. So they're not a true
- 1:23pass they don't. That's not the way they validate their
- 1:26offense by coming out and tossing it all over the yard.
- 1:29But what they did against the Chiefs until that that
- 1:33final twenty eight yard or to divint to Smith against
- 1:36all that pressure, which Steve Spagnolo did more times than
- 1:40I can remember any team doing in recent years. He'd
- 1:44thrown for like seventy passing yards or something along those lines.
- 1:48So you know, it's and you know, it's always easy
- 1:51to say, well they won. You know, there's no way
- 1:54that the coaches in the building can feel great about
- 1:58their pass offense right now. They just came be I mean,
- 2:00I've been doing this too long. You guys have been
- 2:02doing it for a long time. You know it's going
- 2:04to have to get better. Now. They're they're a very
- 2:07very good football team, so they can win games. But
- 2:13you know, you know the way coaches are, they want
- 2:15perfection and strive for excellence along the way to use
- 2:19the old you know, Bobby Knight phrase or whoever first
- 2:21said it. But you know, the past game has got
- 2:25to get better. It's I know Adam loans when I
- 2:28say this, but I'll say it. The past game right
- 2:30now is a little bit of a tough watch.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Oh so let me ask you something off that because
- 2:38we know the fan you know, we see what's in
- 2:39social media. They want to blame Kevin Batulo and all that.
- 2:45You do, not want to criticize play calling or structure.
- 2:47But you you were honest last week because they got
- 2:50off to a good start that it just completely fell
- 2:52off against Dallas.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, there's things I noticed, and
- 2:56I'm just going to say what I noticed, and I'm
- 2:58not going to say whether it's good because again there's
- 3:01you know, having been fortunate enough to be in meetings,
- 3:03you know, at training camp, there's so much, there's so
- 3:06many variables to sit on the outside and say, oh,
- 3:09this is terrible. This guy's stink. You know, you guys
- 3:12know me. I don't do that, but I will say
- 3:14that they repeat a lot of plays, and even plays
- 3:17that don't work, they repeat them again. You know, there's
- 3:21definitely a sense watching the tape the first two weeks
- 3:25that there's not a lot of clean, defined throws for
- 3:27Jalen Hurts, you know, and he's and Jalen is not
- 3:30a necessarily a tight window thrower. That's not his game.
- 3:34Will he throw one on ones on the outside, which,
- 3:36by the way, he's not even doing now, which is
- 3:38very surprising. Again, I can't answer why, but you're not
- 3:43seeing that. There was one in particular to aj Brown
- 3:46in the first half where I was really surprised he
- 3:48didn't throw it to him. But again, no blame, just
- 3:52just what the tape showed. So you know, just like
- 3:56we talked about the Chiefs in our offensive in our
- 4:00when we talked about the Eagles defense, that they have
- 4:02some things to figure out. I think the Eagles have
- 4:04them things to figure out, because you know, they're not
- 4:07coaches are not going to be happy with what the
- 4:09past game looks like right now.
- 4:10Speaker 3: But Greg, on that real quick, Jeff, I thought, and
- 4:14it's kind of what you're saying, Greg. I thought the
- 4:16protection based comparably to the Dallas game where it was spotty.
- 4:20Seemed like Hertz had no a lot of time.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I thought he had a lot at times obviously when
- 4:24they started just you know, jacking up and dialing up
- 4:27the pressure. You know, you don't have enough guys to block,
- 4:30and guys got there, and then Jalen just has to
- 4:32throw it to the one on ones and hey, fortunately
- 4:35they hit that last one to put them up by
- 4:37two scorers, which essentially sealed the game.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:40Speaker 2: The only thing I will say, and I'm just going
- 4:44to say, based on my interpretation of the tape, I
- 4:47could be right, I could be wrong. There are times
- 4:49watching Jalen drop back when there isn't any pressure, you know,
- 4:53normal rush, and based on what I'm my understanding of
- 4:57the coverage, there were four five times or I felt
- 5:01his eyes were not in the right place. You know.
- 5:05That was my interpretation of what I saw. Now, if
- 5:09that's true, that's something you can work on. You know, Hey,
- 5:13you drop back, you see the safety. Like there was
- 5:15one in particular where he dropped back. It was a
- 5:18two man route I believe, to the boundary and they
- 5:21played cover two to that side, and one of the
- 5:25routes was vertical, so the receiver was running right at
- 5:28the safety and the other route was just being hugged
- 5:31up by the underneath coverage. It was clear the second
- 5:34he took the snap that that side was just not
- 5:37That's not where you want to be looking now, and
- 5:39he just stayed looking at that side. And you know,
- 5:42so again I'm thinking, I don't know, but I saw,
- 5:45like I said, I thought there were four or five
- 5:47examples of that where to me, his eyes just did
- 5:50not get to the right spot with the necessary speed
- 5:53and clarity.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Would you say, because I know that there's already a
- 5:57lot of sentiment out there, Oh, this feels like more
- 6:00like a Brian Johnson offense and kell and the Kevin
- 6:03Petulo isn't calling the right place. But when I watched
- 6:06the Craig, I feel like it's the same. For the
- 6:09most part. They do the same things offensively, The routes
- 6:13are pretty similar. I mean, there's a reason why different
- 6:15coordinators come in here and eventually ran the routes and
- 6:18the play designs that the Eagles typically run. I don't
- 6:22see anything that makes me say, oh man, this is
- 6:24totally whacked and different than what they were doing last.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and again, you know the other thing which I've learned,
- 6:30you know, being around coaches and talking to more coaches
- 6:33year after year after year, is. You know, when a
- 6:36guy starts new, like Kevin Petullo, you know you got
- 6:41to let the guy grow into into what he's doing.
- 6:43I mean, this is you know, don't forget they go
- 6:45through a whole off season. All that's great, you know.
- 6:49You know, Tom Brady had this thing on social media
- 6:51where he talked about it went viral basically, I'm sure
- 6:53all you guys saw it where he said, not every
- 6:55quarterback coach is great, not every offensive coordinator is great.
- 6:58I'm sure that's true. He would certainly know better than I.
- 7:01But every coach can you know, draw stuff on the
- 7:04iPad or on the board or however teams you know
- 7:07do it these days. You know, you know, play calling
- 7:12is a different thing. And I never get into play calling,
- 7:15as you guys know, because you'd have to be there
- 7:17all week to understand what the whole thought process is,
- 7:21you know, because maybe fans don't understand that when you
- 7:24get to specific situations like let's say it's third and eight,
- 7:29the offensive coordinator isn't picking from fifty plays, right, He's
- 7:32picking from six plays that they worked on all week. Right,
- 7:36That's the way it works.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And I kind of thought that the plays that they
- 7:40were running were plays that they've ran for the last
- 7:42right years.
- 7:43Speaker 2: So I mean, it's not like you know, and I
- 7:45learned this from people a lot smarter than I am.
- 7:47I mean, I remember an Adam probably remembers just sitting
- 7:49with Jaws. He would always say, you know, I knew
- 7:51what coach remio or whether he was calling it or
- 7:54the coordinator. I knew when we got to third and seven,
- 7:57we was going to be one of four plays. You know,
- 7:59you know that this is the stuff you practice. You're
- 8:02not calling. You don't whip it out of you, you
- 8:04know what, and just call something you haven't practiced, you know,
- 8:07I mean, this is all practiced.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Right, you know.
- 8:10Speaker 2: So you know, so I'm not going to sit here
- 8:12and say that you know it's good, bad, or and different.
- 8:16You know, you got to give Kevin Petullo a chance
- 8:19to kind of work through the process. This stuff's not easy.
- 8:23Speaker 1: One of the things that I think is different about
- 8:25different just from a end result standpoint, Greg and that
- 8:29is probably it's been missing for two weeks and when
- 8:32it returns, everybody will probably be thinking back to normal.
- 8:34Is just the whole explosive element of Saquon Barkley I mean,
- 8:38he's he's run the ball fine, right, I haven't seen
- 8:41anything weird, and I'll ask you about it. But they
- 8:44just haven't had that one cut that he makes, especially
- 8:47in the second half of games last year, where he's
- 8:49off to the races and sort of takes the pressure
- 8:52off the rest in the difference.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I mean, don't forget Normally running backs, you know, very
- 8:58rarely do running backs have like four thirty yard runs
- 9:01in a game, you know, because Barkley, Barkley's had a
- 9:05number of seven yard runs, eight yard runs, nine yard runs.
- 9:07And then what was happening last year is in the
- 9:09second half, maybe he'd break off a twenty five yard
- 9:12and a fifty yarder and all of a sudden he'd
- 9:14done the game with twenty two for one forty five,
- 9:16and everybody would, you know, say, oh my god, you know,
- 9:19that's kind of you know, those plays haven't happened. I mean,
- 9:23the Eagles have played two games. They've only had five
- 9:26plays of fifteen or more yards and.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Two games passing or rushing right, passing or rushing right.
- 9:32And that's me is the biggest, biggest thing right now.
- 9:35Everybody's got all these criticisms, but and you know, Hurts
- 9:38put the ball down the field maybe four or five
- 9:41times against Spags, right, right, and only one connected the
- 9:45twenty the one that mattered it connected. But you know,
- 9:47the point is it's almost like the same thing. It's
- 9:49just the results are a little bit different.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Right, So, I mean, you know, look, they play the Rams.
- 9:54You know the Rams are gonna be well, we'll do
- 9:56that later in the week. Obviously we'll get into more detail.
- 9:58But who knows, maybe you know, breaks one and you know,
- 10:01everybody goes, oh, there, there we go. You know, you
- 10:03just and by the way, the Rams corners that that's
- 10:06a bit of a problem to Killer Witherspoon is going
- 10:08to be out. So now they're they're down to you know,
- 10:11you know, quote unquote backups. So you know, we'll see
- 10:15how it all plays out. But right now, I think,
- 10:18and don't forget you have to do. The other thing
- 10:20you have to understand is Kevin Petullo now is calling
- 10:25the plays, and he's the one in Jalen's ear, and
- 10:28Jalen did not play in the preseason. And no matter
- 10:30how much you do that in training camp or practice
- 10:34it in you know, in a meeting room and try
- 10:36to get the cadence, and it's not the same as
- 10:39doing it in a game. And when you're hearing a
- 10:42totally different voice in a different way, you know, sometimes
- 10:45it just takes a little time for all that to work.
- 10:48Speaker 3: By the way, Greg, this is Hurts a six different
- 10:51play caller the NFL career. Peterson was his first one.
- 10:54People forget that.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Yeah, so I mean, you know, look, can people be happy, No,
- 10:59of course not, but they are too and zero and
- 11:03you know, the bottom line is they do not turn
- 11:05the ball over. That's right. That's so they don't They
- 11:10don't give the opponent short fields. They don't turn it over.
- 11:15And I mean they get to these short yardage situations.
- 11:19I mean, I believe there were eight push pushes in
- 11:21this game if I'm not.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Mistaken, But either way, yes, yeah, I mean.
- 11:26Speaker 2: They get into these short yardage situations and it's it's unstoppable.
- 11:31So you know, again, I'm not saying I'm not trying
- 11:35to defend anybody good or bad or say this is
- 11:38wonderful what their their past game is, it's not. But
- 11:41you know, it's it's a work in progress right now.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Yeah, Greg, the more you talked about you started talking
- 11:47about this last year about being a four down offense. Yeah,
- 11:50I understood it, but I feel like I have a
- 11:52even deeper understanding now because from a from a quarterback standpoint,
- 11:57when you're third and eight or third and seven and
- 11:59you don't have have to throw to the sticks, which
- 12:02everybody is that, you can throw a six yarder or
- 12:05dump it off to sake on the flat and he
- 12:06can get five. And you're fourth and two and you
- 12:08can get that too, especially if you're on there so
- 12:11so easily. I don't say so easily, but honestly, it's
- 12:14not easy on the players, but the percentages say.
- 12:16Speaker 2: They're getting it.
- 12:17Speaker 1: That takes so much pressure.
- 12:19Speaker 2: And that's where the factor with his legs is such
- 12:23a big deal, right, and that can never be discounted.
- 12:27I mean, people can say what they want and you know, look,
- 12:32you guys both know from talking to people in the building.
- 12:35I know this from that and from watching tape for
- 12:37one hundred years. Is Jalen Hurts the best passer in
- 12:40the game? Of course not. You know, can he make
- 12:43certain throws that are really high level, deep balls out
- 12:46you know, balls outside the numbers, really good at that?
- 12:49You know, is he gonna stick tight window throws between
- 12:51the numbers not very often, you know, and in fact,
- 12:54they don't call a lot of those because they know
- 12:56they know what he is and what he isn't. But
- 12:59the legs part that he brings to the table is
- 13:02so so critical and really changes the way defenses have
- 13:06to play.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And he looks at Adam. You mentioned this, and after
- 13:10the opener he does look more explosively. When he runs.
- 13:13It's just a very decisive run. He's hard for whatever
- 13:16the reason. Two years ago he didn't run like that
- 13:18last year a little better this year he's running with.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Me and you think maybe it was seven touch pushes
- 13:24in not eight. But the point is, what how many
- 13:25short yardage situations they get into?
- 13:28Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 13:28Speaker 2: I mean think about how many teams get third and one,
- 13:30fourth and one seven times in a game?
- 13:33Speaker 1: Right?
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 13:34Speaker 1: Right, amazing? All right, last thing before we get to
- 13:37the clips, real quick, just from a schematic and observation standpoint,
- 13:40without Dallas Goddart, the guy was was Kylin Grantson, Grantson
- 13:45and Calcatara. How did they use them? And Cam Latty
- 13:50and his snaps? What did you notice?
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well, a I have to only played six snaps.
- 13:54That was a couple of times he lined up as
- 13:55kind of an offset fallback.
- 13:58Speaker 1: You know.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Again they they were they weren't really used in the
- 14:02past game because the past game wasn't really I didn't
- 14:04know what to make of the past game as far
- 14:06as how they used players, you know, so that I
- 14:09think that this was not a good game to talk
- 14:11about that. No, I'm not the best. It's really not
- 14:15not deployed that way right now. You know, I did
- 14:19notice a couple of blocks where you know, he had
- 14:22to block and he was in line some Greg, Yeah, exactly,
- 14:25Well you have to it who else? Yeah?
- 14:28Speaker 3: I thought might I see, I thought they might do
- 14:30it with a lot too, But they use him as
- 14:31you said, yeah, a lot too, only played six naps.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Hey, you know that one guy in the group chat
- 14:36who hit a five leg parlay week one and he
- 14:38wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of the season.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Sounds like Kaplin, right, Yeah, Yeah, it could be him.
- 14:44Speaker 4: It could be you, and we would all want to
- 14:47be you. My bookie makes it stupid easy to get

- 16:43risk free first stake. I felt like they used grantson
- 16:47Greg as a motion tight end to take defenders out
- 16:52of the box more so you.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Know what they really really I think it was them.
- 16:57I've watched so much Take today, I think my eyes
- 16:59are Oh here's what they did. It was then Ego
- 17:02throughout the game feature tight end motion away from weak
- 17:06side zone run game. And the reason they did that,
- 17:09if you notice what that did is it changed the
- 17:12strength of the offense. So in other words, the offense
- 17:15went from maybe two by two to a three by one.
- 17:18So when the tight end went, the linebackers would bump.
- 17:23So what that did is then they'd run back to
- 17:25the weak side where the tight end was because now
- 17:27it's the weak side and you'd have better angles and
- 17:30leverage to work up to the second level and block
- 17:33the linebackers. Because they bumped over to the strength of
- 17:36the formation.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I think I have a good example of that. You
- 17:39can tell me if I'm wrong. We'll bring it up.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Now.
- 17:41Speaker 1: It is the Saquon Barkley fifteen yard touchdown, and I'll.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Just ran it. Go back, go back, yep, and look
- 17:48at that's grantson right.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yep.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Okay, he's the wing tight end. Watch when he goes
- 17:53in motion, Watch Tranquill and Bolton. Tranquil is the key guy.
- 17:58But watch them they bump. So now look as you
- 18:01run it further, watch what did this allows Jurgens to do.
- 18:05Look at the angle on the leverage he has on
- 18:07on Tranquil because he bumped over. Yep, that's perfect. That's
- 18:11that's perfection.
- 18:13Speaker 1: So something you said last week, Greg also allows Steen
- 18:17to be clean to get out to who he has
- 18:20to block, right, And something you said last week I
- 18:22think is illustrated with this because somebody asked you, I think,
- 18:25and ask Greg Cosell on Patreon. Are the Eagles seeing
- 18:28a lot of stacked boxes against Barkley?
- 18:30Speaker 2: And you're boar three basically right, because yeah.
- 18:33Speaker 1: But your point was it doesn't really matter to manipulate
- 18:37the numbers and to block.
- 18:38Speaker 2: You don't have to block fifty four here. I mean,
- 18:41he's all right, I mean, he's irrelevant.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Even thirty two Bolton is kind of out of the
- 18:45play time.
- 18:46Speaker 3: I always laughed Greg when when fans will say, oh,
- 18:49you can't run against eight man, you don't.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Have to block our lock thise either because of the Hurtz.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Factor, right right. So those that motion and taking them out, Yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Hey, they played eight in the box, so they stopped
- 18:59the run game. That's the first sign that they have
- 19:01the the eye for idiot right on their head. I mean,
- 19:05I mean, come on, you know, you know.
- 19:08Speaker 1: They got five on four here as you can say, yeah,
- 19:11and that's a nu miracle advantage. And Barkley as he daniel.
- 19:15Speaker 2: It up to Connor, who by the way, is a
- 19:17very good football player.
- 19:18Speaker 1: But look he doesn't get touched, not touched for the
- 19:21entire run.
- 19:22Speaker 2: No. So I mean it's you know, that's why motion.
- 19:26You know, most people probably think motion in the past game,
- 19:28you know, but motion is a big deal that goes
- 19:31all the way back to Joe Gibbs with the Washington Redskins.
- 19:34With the use of motion. You know, he was a
- 19:36master because he changed his strength and and change his
- 19:40run support. And that's you know, one reason why you
- 19:43do it?
- 19:43Speaker 1: Yep, absolutely all right. I think the one you were
- 19:46talking about where he didn't throw it to a J.
- 19:49Brown might be here that you.
- 19:51Speaker 2: And I'm sorry, that's it.
- 19:54Speaker 1: So let's go back and look what it was going on.
- 19:57Speaker 2: The boundary acts. He's got press average. I'm kind of
- 20:01surprised they didn't convert this to a fade, but they didn't.
- 20:04But still he's one on one. It's like I almost
- 20:08can't remember the last time they didn't throw to him
- 20:09one all exactly.
- 20:11Speaker 3: I was just gonna say, like that, when Hurts is
- 20:13on man that boss coming out, his eyes would pop
- 20:16out of his head. I know where I'm going now.
- 20:18Speaker 2: His eyes didn't even I think if you see this
- 20:20from in front of Hertz, I don't he didn't even
- 20:24look there.
- 20:25Speaker 1: No, I'm shocked because he had to anticipate pressure just
- 20:28from the press coverage here and.
- 20:31Speaker 2: The play where he threw the quick out to Smith
- 20:33and he got tackled short of the first down.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I forget the end result of this play. We will
- 20:38say see.
- 20:38Speaker 2: It, yes, yes, And he got tackled short of the
- 20:42first the first.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Down, it was third and like eight and he threw
- 20:45a five yard Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Now again, I don't want to sit here and say
- 20:49Jalen's right or wrong. I don't know how he's coached.
- 20:51But all I know is I remember talking to an
- 20:54offensive coach in the league who's been doing it for
- 20:56one hundred years, and we had a great four hour
- 20:59zoom like three years ago. Okay, we were just watching
- 21:02plays and it was as a good friend of mine,
- 21:04and he said, okay, and he showed a play like
- 21:07this where there was a boundary X, you know, and
- 21:09he said, all right, where does the ball go? And
- 21:11I started, you know, breaking down the whole plan and
- 21:14he said, you can stop breaking down the whole play.
- 21:16You're throwing it to the one on one. I mean,
- 21:18you know that's the way most teams, you know. So
- 21:21I was just surprised. Again, I don't want to sit
- 21:23here and say Hurts is right or wrong, because I
- 21:24don't know what he was told when they called this play. Right,
- 21:27Normally he goes to Brown if he's one on one.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Yeah, And this, I feel like this is very similar
- 21:33to last year's NFC Championship game on the second drive,
- 21:37when he threw a beautiful ball down the left side
- 21:40of Land on third and long Brown, and we all
- 21:44did the tape and said, a lot of quarterbacks won't
- 21:46even try to throw that ball on third and eight
- 21:50long because it's a low percentage play. But he doesn't
- 21:53so well.
- 21:54Speaker 2: By the way, I don't that's not even McDuffie. I
- 21:56think that's This was early in the game. I don't
- 21:58get Tuffy. It's no mcduffe's down below. Mcduffee might be
- 22:02blitzing here. So I think it's Fulton thirty. I think
- 22:05that's Fulton. Yeah, yep.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Oh, I'm going after Kristen Fulton all day.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Yeah. So again, no blame because I don't know. But
- 22:14we've just seen in the past where that's almost a
- 22:16given that that's where the ball goes. Right.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Hey, fall is planting season. Did you know that many

- 23:45This is a third and five in the second quarter, guys,
- 23:51and it's gonna go. It's I pulled this one, Greg.
- 23:54I don't know if it was in your notes, but
- 23:56it was. It was advante wide open on a crosser there.
- 24:00And you remember how you said like he's just not
- 24:02looking in the I didn't even know if he saw
- 24:03it or looked at.
- 24:05Speaker 2: It screaming at him. So what we would have to
- 24:09know again is when they called this play and practice
- 24:12this play, because obviously they didn't just call it on
- 24:14a women, you know, without having practiced it. You know
- 24:17who they felt was the primary? Who's secondary? You know?
- 24:21Where do they want him to go with the football?
- 24:24Just run it? Because I think they changed the picture
- 24:26post snap. Yeah, okay, let's see. So yeah, it looks
- 24:30like yeah, yeah, but it's not abnormal what they did.
- 24:36It's not like five guys moved and it's like, oh
- 24:38my god, where are people all right?
- 24:40Speaker 1: I mean, at the end of the day here, they
- 24:42rushed four right and drop and drop guys in the coverage,
- 24:45so he had plenty of time.
- 24:46Speaker 2: They're basically playing cover two. It's cover two inverted top,
- 24:50meaning the corner becomes the defab player and twenty one
- 24:53Hicks becomes the flat player and it's cover two down below,
- 24:56so it's not an abnormal coverage.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Right, And so what happens on this play is he
- 25:03runs straight forward and gets Cam Jurgens called for holding
- 25:06because Cam has no idea he's actually gonna run, uh,
- 25:10and then makes a block that that was considered holding here.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Now again, I don't know how he's coached, but you know, normally,
- 25:18normally when you see cover two, okay, normally, what you
- 25:23might do, you know, if if you're gonna throw with
- 25:25timing and anticipation and you know, and what we've seen
- 25:28him do, by the way, is you think cokatara down
- 25:30the scene because the middle is open, so ideally you
- 25:33throw it down the seam and you bend him in
- 25:35a little bit with your throat terror or.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Is that grant?
- 25:40Speaker 2: This cock tar is right in the middle the forty
- 25:43yard line where.
- 25:43Speaker 1: You've Yeah, when when when can you throw him that ball?
- 25:46Speaker 2: Because this is a timing anticipation throw.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Yeah, because you see he still has enough time to
- 25:55make the throw.
- 25:56Speaker 2: It's got to be a great throw. It's a big guy. Yeah,
- 25:58But I mean that's the NFL. I mean that's and
- 26:00again it's not an easy I'm not saying that this
- 26:02is pitch and catch. That's quarterbacks see the middle open,
- 26:06and there's a seam route very often throw the safety
- 26:10is late. Six is late, whoever six is Yeah. Again,
- 26:13like I said, Jeff, I'm not saying this is routine
- 26:15that anybody could make it, but that's that's the way
- 26:18guys are taught. Middle open, you have a seam route
- 26:21that often where the ball goes right.
- 26:23Speaker 1: And then I think they're taught like you go, what's
- 26:25the furthest the shortest. So if you're not going to
- 26:28make that throw, you then come middle right.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Right, right, right, Jeff. Right.
- 26:33Speaker 3: If he doesn't like to throw, he's got six open,
- 26:35he's got DeVante open for first down.
- 26:37Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean technically he could he probably should
- 26:39throw the ball here to DeVante at this point. Not here, well,
- 26:42you know when the fed I.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Mean there's a throat the bottom line point is there's
- 26:48a throw to be made here.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:51Speaker 1: And then so the fact that he didn't even throw it,
- 26:53he just ran.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Middle again, you know, only he could tell you what
- 26:57he saw as this all happened. But there's a throw
- 27:00to be made. Here. But you know, like I said,
- 27:03you know, this was you know, one of the plays
- 27:04where I thought I wasn't sure where his eyes were
- 27:07and I wasn't sure, you know, based on the route
- 27:10concept versus this coverage, how he was coached and you
- 27:13know who who they felt he should have thrown the
- 27:16ball to. Sure, right, sure, all right.
- 27:19Speaker 1: The last one was one that he uh this Now,
- 27:22this is a one that he throws Greg but I
- 27:25wanted to He's incomplete to DeVante down the left sideline here.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Well this was against zero yep, again zero, and this
- 27:34is he's just thrown it up, right, this is the
- 27:36same play that worked. He's just thrown it up. That's
- 27:39what I want to do.
- 27:39Speaker 1: So this is the exactly play in the second in
- 27:41the fourth quarter of that wound up being.
- 27:43Speaker 2: This is fine by Jalen. He has no choice. He's
- 27:45thrown to the one on ones, you know, to the guy.
- 27:48Look right now, Jalen is seeing that there's basically no
- 27:52safety that could possibly be involved in this throw. So
- 27:56you know, Smith is the boundary X here. So he's
- 27:59just throwing it off and you know, hoping he makes
- 28:01a play. That's all you can do here, you know,
- 28:03you don't have enough to you know, write time and
- 28:07everything for who to block here, so he kind of
- 28:09didn't block anybody.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Really good throw considered, he almost got his great.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Throw right, And that's why that's why I pointed this out.
- 28:15I want because everybody knows about the play that Davonte
- 28:18made that was important. And Andy Reid used to have
- 28:21a phrase he said, we're just a hair off, you know,
- 28:24when things weren't going well. And this is sort of
- 28:26an example because this is.
- 28:27Speaker 2: A place to be a great throw by by Jalen.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Right, that's what I'm saying. It's not all on Jalen
- 28:32and this play like eight times out of ten, I
- 28:35feel like Davanta makes and he just didn't make that one.
- 28:38Speaker 2: I mean it was pretty well covered. It was it
- 28:41was that was the rookie too, No, no, Williams from
- 28:43cow Yeah. But uh but yeah, this was a great throw.
- 28:48I mean he had no choice. That's where you got
- 28:50to throw it. And you know, then you hope your
- 28:51guy makes a play, which he did later in the
- 28:53game against McDuffie. You know, so, uh, that's all you
- 28:56can do against zero like that. You know, you don't
- 28:58want to take a sack you're in field goal range,
- 29:00so you don't want to take a sack, so you
- 29:01get the ball out.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Right, And that that was my point. If if he
- 29:05catches that ball, they score either a field goal or
- 29:07a town Hurts has like one hundred and sixty yards
- 29:10instead of one hundred and ten or twenty whatever whatever
- 29:12he had. And then people, I also think it's more.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Normal reasons bags and he ultimately got burned with it
- 29:17one time, just kept increasing his blitz frequency in the
- 29:20zero is because the offense, the pass game was just
- 29:23he could tell that the Eagles pass game was out
- 29:25of saint I mean, right, you know, it had no
- 29:27rhythm to it at all.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Right, right, and I credit him. You know, he gave
- 29:30up a lot of big plays in the Super Bowl,
- 29:32but he didn't back down from trying to In fact,
- 29:35he blitzed more probably in this game than he even did.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, so he didn't back down. No, it's uh,
- 29:43you know, it's it's look, you'd rather be two and
- 29:45oh with things to work on than oh and two
- 29:46or one and one with things to work on. Definitely true.
- 29:49Speaker 1: All right, So that was the snapshot of the Eagles offense.
- 29:52They won the game though they're two and oh and
- 29:55of course we will all talk about their next game,
- 29:57Week three versus the La Rams. Back at the link
