Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Birds Weekly with Derrick Gunn, Barrett Brooks: Gonna "Need An Oxygen Mask" To Handle Eagles Games!
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey everybody, we are up and rolling on the week
- 0:12Speaker 1: two edition of Birds Weekly presented by the Inside the
- 0:16Speaker 1: Birds Network. Barrett Brooks over there, I'm Derek Gunn, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: oh my goodness, watching the Eagles the first two games
- 0:23Speaker 1: of the season, you need an oxygen mask, and hopefully
- 0:27Speaker 1: you don't have a pacemaker, or you have no illnesses
- 0:31Speaker 1: or anxieties or tensions within you, because this team, when
- 0:36Speaker 1: you watch them so far, it's not just a job,
- 0:38Speaker 1: it's an adventure. But the bottom line is they're two
- 0:42Speaker 1: up and zero down in Barrett. You know, we know
- 0:46Speaker 1: we talk about it all the time that, you know,
- 0:49Speaker 1: there's nothing given in a National Football League. You don't
- 0:52Speaker 1: take any opponent lightly. And sometimes what you see on
- 0:56Speaker 1: paper is not reality. You know, we know the Eagles
- 0:59Speaker 1: on paper are a superior team talent-wise to Tennessee. But, oh,
- 1:04Speaker 1: my goodness, what a game it turned out to be.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Your general impression overall?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Just like yourself, I kept my antacids on deck right
- 1:14Speaker 2: next to me. Popped about three or four antacids. It
- 1:17Speaker 2: doesn't make any sense for this team to be going
- 1:18Speaker 2: through this. To me, these are two bottom dwellers that
- 1:22Speaker 2: they should have just beat up on. They should have
- 1:24Speaker 2: beat up this Titans team. The only thing they had
- 1:28Speaker 2: going for them, really, as far as what they do good,
- 1:34Speaker 2: is Simmons. He's definitely the real deal. He's the best
- 1:39Speaker 2: player on the team. And then you had, you know,
- 1:42Speaker 2: their first rounder take from Ohio State. He's pretty good,
- 1:47Speaker 2: but he hadn't been able to show anything because Ward
- 1:51Speaker 2: just haven't been able to get any time to throw
- 1:53Speaker 2: the ball down the field. But they showed you give
- 1:56Speaker 2: him a little time, Ward can play. And they just
- 1:58Speaker 2: so happened. I mean, everybody gets a great trench play.
- 2:03Speaker 2: day against the Eagles thus far. The last two teams
- 2:05Speaker 2: have played well on both sides of the ball in
- 2:07Speaker 2: the trenches, and I feel as though that's the strength
- 2:09Speaker 2: of our team, but people have taken advantage of it.
- 2:14Speaker 3: My first analysis after I took everything in.
- 2:18Speaker 2: And I sat back, I watched the little tape, I
- 2:21Speaker 2: watched it one time and tried to see what I saw,
- 2:25Speaker 2: and they're not far from being a good team.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yeah, they only scored 24 points this game, but they're not.
- 2:32Speaker 2: real far from being a complete team that's going to
- 2:35Speaker 2: go out and start dominating teams eventually. But I've said
- 2:38Speaker 2: that before, and this year I've just begun I'm not
- 2:42Speaker 2: going to do it. I am not going to go
- 2:44Speaker 2: into this season with green-colored glasses on.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I refuse. I've never heard you say that before. I've
- 2:50Speaker 3: never heard you say that before.
- 2:52Speaker 2: You know, even in my grades, you know, when I'm
- 2:53Speaker 2: doing my pre and post, I'm doing my grades. I
- 2:56Speaker 2: have yet to give Jalen Hurts an A. I've given
- 3:00Speaker 2: him a B-plus both times. And he deserves an A,
- 3:03Speaker 2: but I just can't do it because I can't be
- 3:05Speaker 2: the homer like that anymore. I can't get by with saying,
- 3:09Speaker 2: all right, they're going to eventually turn the corner and
- 3:12Speaker 2: be the team that they on paper should look like.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I can't do it this time.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Wait, you're growing up. What happened to you? Who got
- 3:21Speaker 1: to you finally? I couldn't get to you. So who
- 3:23Speaker 1: got to you? I know, I know, I know.
- 3:25Speaker 3: And that's what it is.
- 3:27Speaker 2: You know, I just, I'm tired of making excuses for them,
- 3:30Speaker 2: you know, and that's exactly what I was doing. Right now,
- 3:32Speaker 2: I'm just going to analyze what I see on tape.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Eye in the sky doesn't lie. And what I see,
- 3:38Speaker 2: I see some good things that are right on the
- 3:40Speaker 2: cusp of being great. I mean, they're right there. You know, like,
- 3:45Speaker 2: you look at, you know, Hunt and you look at Smith.
- 3:49Speaker 2: They were both right there. Smith got him a sack,
- 3:52Speaker 2: but both Hunt and Smith have almost gotten there so
- 3:56Speaker 2: many times.
- 3:57Speaker 3: And I just need him to just finish the deal now.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Well, as we sit here doing this podcast, we find
- 4:04Speaker 1: out a few hours prior to this that the Eagles,
- 4:07Speaker 1: out of necessity, go back and dig into the coffin
- 4:12Speaker 1: and bring back... Wait, wait, hold on. You're not going
- 4:16Speaker 1: to get away with that. Did you just say the coffin?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Should I clarify that? Dig into the past.
- 4:24Speaker 3: How's that?
- 4:25Speaker 1: I should have said coffin because I have the utmost
- 4:27Speaker 1: respect for this man. He has always been one of
- 4:30Speaker 1: my favorites, and hopefully he didn't hear me say dig
- 4:32Speaker 1: into the coffin. But the Eagles have signed, re-signed Zach Ertz.
- 4:36Speaker 1: They're going to bring him back out of necessity. Dallas
- 4:40Speaker 1: Goddard went out early in this game with a knee injury.
- 4:43Speaker 1: We don't know how long he's going to be out
- 4:45Speaker 1: with an MCL sprain. But you know what, Barrett? Dallas
- 4:50Speaker 1: Goddard is like jail and safety blanket. Now he's down.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And the tight end room is a huge question mark now.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I mean, you look at what they have left in
- 5:00Speaker 1: Johnny Munt. He was brought in here to block, and
- 5:03Speaker 1: his blocking has been a little bit questionable. You have
- 5:07Speaker 1: EJ Jenkins, Grant Calcaterra's on IR, and Eli Stowers. Let
- 5:14Speaker 1: me ask you about Stowers. Why hasn't he acted? What's
- 5:17Speaker 1: his deal? Give me your perspective on him.
- 5:19Speaker 2: My perspective is when they drafted him, I thought he
- 5:24Speaker 2: was– A slot receiver. I thought he was a big
- 5:28Speaker 2: receiver as opposed to him being a tight end. He
- 5:30Speaker 2: was never a tight end. He's a former quarterback that
- 5:35Speaker 2: in this progression of leaving one school, going to another school,
- 5:37Speaker 2: the school he ended up with.
- 5:39Speaker 3: He became a tight end.
- 5:41Speaker 2: So it made him a great route runner, a great
- 5:44Speaker 2: guy that you can go out there, you can sit
- 5:45Speaker 2: out there, and he can definitely take advantage of guys
- 5:49Speaker 2: like in the secondary because he's a quarterback. He knows
- 5:53Speaker 2: what the quarterback's looking for and how he needs to
- 5:56Speaker 2: be where he needed to be while he was in college.
- 5:59Speaker 2: At this level, you got to change who you are
- 6:02Speaker 2: as far as your mentality because you can't just be
- 6:06Speaker 2: a pass-catching tight end. Even Zach Ertz had to block sometimes. And,
- 6:12Speaker 2: you know, at this point, you know, he's, you know,
- 6:14Speaker 2: he's what, 35, 36 years old? Kind of long in
- 6:16Speaker 2: the tooth, but he could still go out there at
- 6:18Speaker 2: least you know, shut you down, block you a little bit. Well, Stowers,
- 6:22Speaker 2: the physical nature of which he needs to play, especially
- 6:27Speaker 2: being a tight end, and they put him on an
- 6:28Speaker 2: in-line tight end where he's, you know, right next to
- 6:30Speaker 2: a tackle.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I don't know if he can.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Necessarily grow in that position right now.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I think he gets it out there.
- 6:37Speaker 2: He might be a little gun shy, and you don't
- 6:40Speaker 2: want to mess up his psyche or anything. So he
- 6:45Speaker 2: had an injury. And I guess, you know, it didn't
- 6:47Speaker 2: get healed fast enough, so they put him on IR.
- 6:51Speaker 2: So he's on IR right now. And I think it's,
- 6:54Speaker 2: you know, it's for the good that they did that
- 6:58Speaker 2: because he wasn't ready.
- 6:59Speaker 3: I don't think he is ready, you know, to be
- 7:02Speaker 3: playing right now.
- 7:03Speaker 2: But number two, you can't cut him and put him
- 7:07Speaker 2: on a practice squad because somebody will scoop him right up.
- 7:10Speaker 2: So to me, he's just still a big wide receiver,
- 7:15Speaker 2: more so than a tight end.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Do you think Zach Ertz can help this team? I mean,
- 7:19Speaker 1: he's not familiar with this offense and Sean Mannion. He's
- 7:24Speaker 1: coming off a major injury, an ACL tear. Do you
- 7:28Speaker 1: think he can come in here and help this team?
- 7:31Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Because there's some familiarity with him and, you know, Ertz.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I mean, he's been around Ertz before. He's beloved in
- 7:42Speaker 2: the city. And I really think that he has enough
- 7:44Speaker 2: in his tank from what he showed us against when
- 7:47Speaker 2: he played against with the commanders, he was the number
- 7:49Speaker 2: two threat for the commanders, you know? So, you know, he, he's,
- 7:54Speaker 2: he was more than capable of being that guy. And
- 7:56Speaker 2: he was a guy for them when he was playing.
- 7:59Speaker 2: It wasn't like they were just, you know, gave him
- 8:00Speaker 2: a contract and he wasn't out there balling. He was
- 8:03Speaker 2: the number two receiver, you know, even as though he's
- 8:05Speaker 2: at the tight end position. So do I think he
- 8:09Speaker 2: has enough here? I think he does. I think he'll
- 8:11Speaker 2: come in and be able to go out and run
- 8:14Speaker 2: routes effectively in the middle of the field. And, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 2: keep the sticks moving. Now, I don't know about yak yarders.
- 8:20Speaker 2: You know, it's not a Dallas God. Dallas God got
- 8:22Speaker 2: better when he caught it and then turned into a runner.
- 8:26Speaker 2: You know, that's when he really shined. But Zach Hurst
- 8:30Speaker 2: is one of those guys, you know, hey, he's going
- 8:32Speaker 2: to go to the sticks. He's going to make the sticks.
- 8:33Speaker 2: He's going to make the catch. He may not give
- 8:35Speaker 2: you jack yarders, but he's going to go out there
- 8:37Speaker 2: and he's going to make the catch. He's going to
- 8:38Speaker 2: keep the chains moving. And that's what you get with him.
- 8:41Speaker 2: And to me, that's exactly what they need right now.
- 8:44Speaker 3: So.
- 8:47Speaker 2: can he help this team? He absolutely can. He absolutely will.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And they absolutely need him right now. Cause right now,
- 8:52Speaker 2: EJ Jenkins and, and Mund are the only two. And
- 8:55Speaker 2: just like you said, you know, I thought Mund was
- 8:57Speaker 2: going to come here and be, you know, Mark Bavaro,
- 8:59Speaker 2: you know, I'm sorry, I'm going with a Giants tight end,
- 9:02Speaker 2: but you know, Bavaro was that dude. I saw him
- 9:04Speaker 2: block people and, and, and pancake, you know, he was
- 9:06Speaker 2: an offensive lineman, but I thought he was going to
- 9:08Speaker 2: be that type of blocker.
- 9:12Speaker 3: He's done. Okay. I expect a little more, but, um, Yesterday, you.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Know, during the game, he had to go out there
- 9:19Speaker 2: and he had to be a pass catch and tight end,
- 9:20Speaker 2: and he was up for the challenge.
- 9:22Speaker 3: He made it happen. He was up for the challenge.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Well, the loss of Dallas Goddard is huge, and we're
- 9:28Speaker 1: going to see how they fill that void because as
- 9:31Speaker 1: we saw in the first game against Washington, you know,
- 9:34Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard's presence, 77 yards receiving, was huge in helping
- 9:39Speaker 1: decide the outcome of that game. But the bigger problem
- 9:43Speaker 1: to me is, This offensive line, Barry, we find out
- 9:48Speaker 1: like an hour before kickoff that Cam Jurgens is moving
- 9:52Speaker 1: over to left guard and Kendall's playing center. And we're like,
- 9:57Speaker 1: why would you move Cam to left guard when we
- 10:00Speaker 1: heard Jalen stand in front of the media this past
- 10:02Speaker 1: week and say, Cam is my guy center.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Cam.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I mean, he definitively said Cam, but yet the coaches
- 10:08Speaker 1: decided to put him in left guard. And I'm telling
- 10:10Speaker 1: you right now, I don't want to see Cam in
- 10:13Speaker 1: left guard anymore. I know he's played guard position and
- 10:15Speaker 1: I know Kendall is a natural center, I don't want
- 10:18Speaker 1: to see it anymore. Put Cam back in the center.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I don't care what you do to the left guard
- 10:22Speaker 1: position right now, but I don't want to see Cam
- 10:24Speaker 1: a left guard anymore because this right now, this offensive
- 10:27Speaker 1: line to me is discombobulated. You got a running game.
- 10:30Speaker 1: It's not going anywhere. And Jalen is taking unnecessary shots
- 10:33Speaker 1: and running for his life. I mean, you've got a
- 10:36Speaker 1: lot of work to do in that old line. I
- 10:37Speaker 1: believe they're going to get, and your, your guy, Jordan Malata.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. He's getting job the first two games
- 10:45Speaker 1: of the season, but Jordan says, Hey, Don't panic. We're
- 10:48Speaker 1: going to get this right. Well, you better get it
- 10:51Speaker 1: right because you're coming up against better competition now. Chicago, Rams,
- 10:56Speaker 1: and Jacksonville.

- 13:37Speaker 2: I'll say this. I think I know I'm going to
- 13:42Speaker 2: be the lone soldier. You know what I'm saying? I'm
- 13:45Speaker 2: dancing around my own teepee right now. But I think
- 13:48Speaker 2: that's the best move they could have made was move
- 13:51Speaker 2: the center line. and Cam move him out the guard,
- 13:57Speaker 2: and then put, you know, you had to put him there. Kendall,
- 14:00Speaker 2: I mean, Kendall's a natural center. That's what he plays,
- 14:03Speaker 2: a natural center.
- 14:04Speaker 1: He should be naturally sitting on the sideline. There's nobody
- 14:09Speaker 1: else that could do it.
- 14:09Speaker 3: I mean, you could. You could have left it where
- 14:13Speaker 3: it was, but I.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Think it would have been worse for having him playing
- 14:15Speaker 2: guard with Simmons as opposed to playing center with Simmons.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I think he had, in all actually, I think he
- 14:21Speaker 2: had a pretty good, when I watched the film, It
- 14:24Speaker 2: wasn't as bad as I thought. In fact, I thought
- 14:26Speaker 2: that Cam had it rougher at the guard position than
- 14:31Speaker 2: Kendall had at the center position. And far be it
- 14:36Speaker 2: for me to say anything about what was going on
- 14:39Speaker 2: last week. Kendall, if they'd have put him in the
- 14:43Speaker 2: second half, I think that they'd have scored more points.
- 14:46Speaker 2: They'd probably at least score 30 points. as opposed to
- 14:49Speaker 2: the amount of points they scored. They at least made
- 14:52Speaker 2: that because at that point, Dixon, he was a detriment
- 14:55Speaker 2: as opposed to him being out there. He was like
- 14:58Speaker 2: not even 70%. He was probably at 60%. So they
- 15:01Speaker 2: need to get him out there. This week, I think
- 15:05Speaker 2: when you put a guy that has never played left
- 15:08Speaker 2: guard in a position he's playing left guard, and your
- 15:12Speaker 2: expectation is for him to play against their best player,
- 15:15Speaker 2: of course it's going to be bad.
- 15:16Speaker 3: And it was bad.
- 15:18Speaker 2: But I think Cam will eventually get back to it
- 15:22Speaker 2: and he'll be good.
- 15:24Speaker 3: In fact, I know he'll be better next week. It
- 15:26Speaker 3: won't be all the jockeying position. He'll be there.
- 15:28Speaker 2: He'll be a week and a half practicing at that position.
- 15:32Speaker 2: So he will be drastically better than what you saw
- 15:35Speaker 2: in this last game. I just thought from my vantage
- 15:39Speaker 2: point and from my experience, I knew when I played
- 15:44Speaker 2: later on in my career that I was going to
- 15:46Speaker 2: have to be a guy that could play both sides.
- 15:48Speaker 2: And then I also had to make sure that I
- 15:51Speaker 2: can go out and play not just tackle, but also guard.
- 15:55Speaker 3: And then later on, I played center also.
- 15:58Speaker 2: So I knew the only way that I could be
- 16:00Speaker 2: of a valuable asset that the team that I was
- 16:03Speaker 2: on could not get rid of me is to cross-train
- 16:06Speaker 2: and know every position, whether I'm a left, right, left guard,
- 16:10Speaker 2: right guard, or center. I knew every position, and I
- 16:14Speaker 2: could flow between them you know, almost like I was ambidextrous,
- 16:18Speaker 2: you know, in playing.
- 16:19Speaker 3: So I could do that. And that's because I trained
- 16:21Speaker 3: myself to do that.
- 16:22Speaker 2: So to me, it wasn't a big deal because, you know,
- 16:26Speaker 2: I was able to do it. I remember Andre Dillard
- 16:28Speaker 2: went through the same thing. He was like, oh, if
- 16:29Speaker 2: I was going out there and I had to write
- 16:31Speaker 2: with my left hand, I didn't see anything easy. But
- 16:35Speaker 2: I mean, wrong, but I thought it was easy to
- 16:36Speaker 2: do that. But that's because I trained myself mentally in
- 16:39Speaker 2: a survival type of role. You know, if I don't
- 16:42Speaker 2: do this, I'm going to get cut. If I don't
- 16:45Speaker 2: do this, teams won't need me. If I don't do this,
- 16:48Speaker 2: I won't be in the NFL anymore. So I kind of,
- 16:50Speaker 2: I did it easier than most people. But I can
- 16:53Speaker 2: understand Cam because he played right guard. It's different from
- 16:56Speaker 2: playing right guard or left guard. You know, you got
- 16:59Speaker 2: your hemisphere, this side. I mean, it's hard to really,
- 17:03Speaker 2: in your mind, focus on one side if you haven't
- 17:06Speaker 2: done it before.
- 17:06Speaker 3: It really is hard. So I give him a B-,.
- 17:13Speaker 2: For him going out there and doing it, you know,
- 17:16Speaker 2: because he said it, I have to be a loyal soldier.
- 17:18Speaker 2: So Cam went out there and played. But please believe,
- 17:22Speaker 2: you know, that's not the Cam Jurgens you're going to
- 17:24Speaker 2: see this next week coming on Monday night. It's not
- 17:26Speaker 2: going to be anywhere that bad. But, you know, I
- 17:29Speaker 2: think he'll be okay going forward. And I think the
- 17:32Speaker 2: offensive line will now solidify as they go forward. They
- 17:36Speaker 2: will be a better offensive line going into the season now.
- 17:39Speaker 1: So you think Cam's going to be at left guard
- 17:41Speaker 1: again Monday night against Chicago?
- 17:43Speaker 2: And honestly, he might be left guard a long, long time.
- 17:47Speaker 2: I mean, this may not just be a this year
- 17:51Speaker 2: type of thing. It might be ongoing, you know, just
- 17:54Speaker 2: depending on how Dickerson heals and reacts, you know.
- 17:58Speaker 3: I mean, we had to talk Dickerson into coming back,
- 18:00Speaker 3: you know.
- 18:01Speaker 2: So, you know, I mean, I could see him saying,
- 18:04Speaker 2: all right, well, my body just can't take it. I mean,
- 18:07Speaker 2: that's a lot of wear and tear on them joints
- 18:08Speaker 2: and bones, man. You know what I'm saying? He's the
- 18:10Speaker 2: walking wounded, man. So, you know, he's got more screws
- 18:14Speaker 2: and titanium in him than most motorcycles, bro.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Oh, gee.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness. All right, let's get to something good.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Jalen Hurst. Jalen Hurst. Jalen Hurst. Jalen Hurst. Jalen Hurst. 26, 37, 264.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Two touchdowns. Almost an 86 QB rating. Six of eight
- 18:35Speaker 1: on a definitive drive that won the game for them.
- 18:38Speaker 1: It may not always be pretty. But Jalen Hurts is
- 18:42Speaker 1: about winning, has been since he's been with this organization. Again,
- 18:46Speaker 1: he was under pressure, took some shots, had to run
- 18:50Speaker 1: for his life at times. But when he had to
- 18:52Speaker 1: drop a dime, when he had to drop a dime,
- 18:54Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts did it again. All the naysayers out there
- 18:58Speaker 1: about Jalen Hurts, you got to squash this noise because
- 19:00Speaker 1: this man who has a 750 career winning percentage in
- 19:05Speaker 1: regular season games, Once again, found a way to get
- 19:08Speaker 1: it done. I was impressed how he handled himself against
- 19:11Speaker 1: a Tennessee defense, obviously plays called by Robert Sala, who
- 19:17Speaker 1: has a way of getting inside of Jalen's head.
- 19:21Speaker 3: I love the way he played.
- 19:22Speaker 2: In fact, like I said, I should have gave him
- 19:24Speaker 2: an A, but I'm not because they didn't play as
- 19:26Speaker 2: a whole, and he's the face of this franchise. So
- 19:31Speaker 2: since the whole team didn't do good, I'm not going
- 19:33Speaker 2: to give him the A. but I should have gave
- 19:35Speaker 2: him the A, put it like that. The way he
- 19:37Speaker 2: was able to execute that offense, run what he needed
- 19:40Speaker 2: to run, I thought he really, he matured as far as,
- 19:44Speaker 2: you know, all right, I can't be too high up
- 19:48Speaker 2: i can't be too far down you're gonna get the
- 19:50Speaker 2: same face you're gonna get the same drive you're gonna
- 19:52Speaker 2: get the same person week in and week out and
- 19:55Speaker 2: sometimes as a team you need that that that that
- 19:59Speaker 2: you know that that focus to be a great player
- 20:03Speaker 2: and have a team rely on you knowing they're gonna
- 20:05Speaker 2: get the same guy every time you need that consistency
- 20:08Speaker 2: And that's exactly what Jalen Hurts, you know, has done
- 20:10Speaker 2: for him. Say what you want to say. He's not
- 20:14Speaker 2: calling the plays. The offensive coordinator is calling the plays.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And now he's executing these plays. This is totally different.
- 20:20Speaker 2: You see all the motions that they have there going
- 20:22Speaker 2: under the center. Jalen throwing in the middle of the field.
- 20:25Speaker 2: This is not what he's comfortable with. But now he's
- 20:27Speaker 2: been comfortable with being uncomfortable. He's allowed himself to mature.
- 20:31Speaker 2: He would have never, like, that first interception, that was his.
- 20:35Speaker 2: He tried to force the ball.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Yep.
- 20:36Speaker 2: But I can't be too mad at that because at
- 20:38Speaker 2: least he's trying to go out there and do what
- 20:41Speaker 2: he can and throw the middle of the field. And
- 20:43Speaker 2: he would never do that before. So he's trying defenses.
- 20:47Speaker 2: He's trying to show, hey, I'm going to do this.
- 20:49Speaker 2: He's giving them something to look at. So I like
- 20:51Speaker 2: the fact that he did it. And I like the
- 20:52Speaker 2: fact that he was still trying to do it, throw
- 20:54Speaker 2: it in the middle of the field. But, I mean,
- 20:56Speaker 2: they did it.
- 20:58Speaker 3: It was an exception.
- 20:59Speaker 2: They almost returned it. But at the end of the day,
- 21:02Speaker 2: you know, the second one, I can't blame that second
- 21:04Speaker 2: one on him. That was, you know, Cam. Jergens, you know,
- 21:07Speaker 2: getting pushed into him. He couldn't step through. So since
- 21:10Speaker 2: he couldn't step through. And he got hit right when
- 21:12Speaker 2: he released the ball.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 21:14Speaker 2: So he couldn't put all into it. That's why it
- 21:15Speaker 2: was under thrown. But if he, I mean, if he'd
- 21:18Speaker 2: have got a chance to step into that, that'd have
- 21:20Speaker 2: been six. We wouldn't be worried about this. It'd have
- 21:22Speaker 2: been six already.
- 21:23Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 21:24Speaker 2: So Jalen Hurts is a master at winning when he
- 21:31Speaker 2: needs to win.
- 21:32Speaker 3: If you need him, you need to go out there.
- 21:34Speaker 3: You need a game type thing.
- 21:36Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not going to say he's the Michael Jordan,
- 21:39Speaker 2: but I can't rely on him to take the last shot.
- 21:41Speaker 3: I can. I've got a lot of confidence that he
- 21:45Speaker 3: can go out and take the last shot.
- 21:47Speaker 2: And, you know, I'm tired of all these pundits talking about,
- 21:50Speaker 2: you know, that's the one that's old.
- 21:53Speaker 3: You know, make him play from the pocket. Okay, he's
- 21:55Speaker 3: done that. He played from the pocket.
- 21:56Speaker 2: He beat the best quarterback, you know, in football right
- 22:00Speaker 2: now in the pocket.
- 22:03Speaker 3: You know, he's done it all. Everybody had to get
- 22:07Speaker 3: off his back. Now, if you have a bad game, yeah,
- 22:09Speaker 3: say you had a bad game. Tell him why you
- 22:12Speaker 3: had a bad game.
- 22:13Speaker 2: But don't just say he a bad player or he
- 22:14Speaker 2: can't do this, he can't.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Do that because he's not a traditional quarterback. He's a quarterback.
- 22:19Speaker 3: That's good at what he does.
- 22:20Speaker 2: He's exactly what the doctor ordered for what his team
- 22:23Speaker 2: is asking him to do.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Period.
- 22:26Speaker 1: You know, I wanted to ask you about him playing
- 22:29Speaker 1: from the pocket because Jeffrey Simmons came out and it
- 22:32Speaker 1: was reported across the country last week saying, We want
- 22:35Speaker 1: to make Jalen play from the pocket. And people ran
- 22:38Speaker 1: with that. Now, at that time, I knew what Jeffrey
- 22:42Speaker 1: was trying to say.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Me too.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Me too. And he said it. Maybe he said it
- 22:46Speaker 1: in a way where, and of course, let's face it.
- 22:48Speaker 1: We in the media, we grab something, we run with it.
- 22:50Speaker 1: And when it's told 20 different times, it's not told accurately.
- 22:54Speaker 1: And of course, Jeffrey clarified it after the game, you know,
- 22:59Speaker 1: that they didn't want Jalen to beat them with their legs,
- 23:02Speaker 1: especially on a hot, humid day like that. They didn't
- 23:05Speaker 1: want Jalen to use his legs to beat them. But
- 23:07Speaker 1: yet I was surprised how the Eagles took that and
- 23:10Speaker 1: ran with it as motivation. And I've said time and
- 23:13Speaker 1: time again, you afforded the opportunity of being one of
- 23:17Speaker 1: less than 1,700 players to wear a uniform in the
- 23:20Speaker 1: National Football League. Unlike the other three major sports, hockey, basketball,
- 23:25Speaker 1: and baseball, where you play back-to-back nights or every other night,
- 23:28Speaker 1: you play this game once a week. You get that
- 23:31Speaker 1: adrenaline rush to build up once a week to play
- 23:33Speaker 1: this game. You get paid a handsome salary to play
- 23:37Speaker 1: this game. You should not need any more motivation to
- 23:40Speaker 1: play this game other than the fact that you made it.
- 23:44Speaker 1: You're getting paid well. Were you surprised how the Eagles
- 23:47Speaker 1: as a whole took that and ran with it to
- 23:49Speaker 1: use as motivation for this game? Doug, you always want
- 23:53Speaker 1: blackboard material.
- 23:54Speaker 2: And of course, as a player, you're going to take
- 23:57Speaker 2: it and you're going to run with it regardless of
- 23:59Speaker 2: how he meant it.
- 24:00Speaker 3: He shouldn't have said it.
- 24:01Speaker 2: And you see at the end of the game, when
- 24:03Speaker 2: he was about to go on a national interview, and
- 24:06Speaker 2: all of a sudden Simmons came up behind him and said, hey,
- 24:08Speaker 2: you started this, and I had.
- 24:10Speaker 3: To finish it. I don't know. That's great.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you started it, and I finished it. And you
- 24:18Speaker 2: can't say it any other way, but okay, I told
- 24:22Speaker 2: you so. I told everybody so. Come on now, I
- 24:26Speaker 2: can't win a game from the pocket. I've been doing
- 24:28Speaker 2: it for years. I've been a star for what, five years,
- 24:31Speaker 2: six years now? I've been to the Super Bowl twice.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I won a Super Bowl. I was Super Bowl MVP.
- 24:38Speaker 2: I've been a pro bowler. I mean, what else do
- 24:41Speaker 2: you want me to do to show that I'm one
- 24:42Speaker 2: of the best quarterbacks?
- 24:44Speaker 3: And yet and still, you want to put guys like
- 24:47Speaker 3: Herbert in front of him. Come on, man. Come on now.
- 24:51Speaker 2: You know, I mean, it just doesn't make sense to
- 24:53Speaker 2: put all these people in front of him when all
- 24:56Speaker 2: your ultimate goal is to do is win. That's all
- 24:59Speaker 2: you're here to do. That's all he's here to do.
- 25:02Speaker 2: If they say, this is the way we want to
- 25:03Speaker 2: do it, call plays, and that's the way they're doing it,
- 25:06Speaker 2: he can't do anything about that. When they call a play,
- 25:09Speaker 2: he runs the play. Now, if you want to bid
- 25:11Speaker 2: from the pocket, tell them to call a game, which
- 25:13Speaker 2: he's going to be throwing from the pocket.
- 25:15Speaker 3: But why?
- 25:16Speaker 2: Why pitch and hold yourself into that? That's when you
- 25:19Speaker 2: mess up. That's what Favre did.
- 25:20Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? McNabb did for a long time.
- 25:23Speaker 3: He was like, you know what?
- 25:24Speaker 2: I want to be a pocket passer instead of going out.
- 25:26Speaker 2: And to me, it kind of... lessen his effectiveness, you know,
- 25:30Speaker 2: later on in his career. Jalen, be that dual threat quarterback.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Be a handful for everybody that plays against you. Always,
- 25:38Speaker 2: because what it does, it makes that defense play honest.
- 25:43Speaker 2: That plus one makes the defense, usually when you're playing
- 25:45Speaker 2: against a quarterback, it's a dropback quarterback, it's the defense
- 25:49Speaker 2: is 11 against your 10, because all he's going to
- 25:51Speaker 2: do is throw the.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Ball and he's not in the equation after that.
- 25:54Speaker 2: When you got somebody like Jalen, and can ball like that,
- 25:58Speaker 2: it gives you an opportunity now so you can run
- 26:01Speaker 2: and it makes that defensive end stay home. Now he
- 26:05Speaker 2: can't crash down. Because if he crashed down now, Jalen
- 26:07Speaker 2: will take it for 40 yards. So he has to
- 26:10Speaker 2: stay home, which allows Saquon now to run the backside
- 26:14Speaker 2: and not worry about getting crashed down and hit, you know.
- 26:16Speaker 2: So him being there is effective because, number one, it
- 26:20Speaker 2: makes you play 11-on-11.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Number two.
- 26:22Speaker 2: His decision-making and how he runs the offense is so
- 26:26Speaker 2: effective that he makes you wrong. Anytime you, you know,
- 26:29Speaker 2: you think you're right. He makes you wrong. Well, you know,
- 26:32Speaker 2: you were.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Talking about how they ran Sean Manion's offense and they
- 26:35Speaker 1: come out in their first three drives were double digit plays,
- 26:39Speaker 1: you know, and all of a sudden the first quarter
- 26:41Speaker 1: is over in a blink of an eye, you know,
- 26:43Speaker 1: you think of what the heck, you know, I was
- 26:45Speaker 1: impressed overall. I mean, we talk about the offensive line
- 26:48Speaker 1: play and, you know, We talk about how Jalen was
- 26:52Speaker 1: under duress. But, you know, they mixed it up well,
- 26:56Speaker 1: those first three series. Of course, the first series ends
- 27:00Speaker 1: in an interception. It's a 14-point swing because Tennessee went
- 27:04Speaker 1: down the field and scored. But then the Eagles go
- 27:07Speaker 1: right back down the field and get a touchdown to
- 27:09Speaker 1: pull even. I love how the way they mixed and
- 27:12Speaker 1: matched that offense to keep the Tennessee defense on its heels.
- 27:16Speaker 2: And I thought that was effective because, number one, last week,
- 27:22Speaker 2: He would run the offense.
- 27:23Speaker 3: We only had 10 first downs.
- 27:25Speaker 2: You can't win with 10 first downs, but yet they
- 27:27Speaker 2: would win with 10 first downs.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Yep.
- 27:29Speaker 2: You didn't run the ball effectively last week. This week,
- 27:33Speaker 2: you saw a nice mix. Even though Saquon got hurt
- 27:37Speaker 2: the first play, you still had a nice mix of
- 27:40Speaker 2: Bigsby and those guys running a rocket. And we got
- 27:43Speaker 2: to the second level. You know, we were pounding it,
- 27:45Speaker 2: and we kept the chains moving. I liked the consistency
- 27:48Speaker 2: we had with running the offense. We stayed on time.
- 27:52Speaker 2: If he won for a pre-step or a holding or
- 27:55Speaker 2: something like that, we'd have kept going and scored probably.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Every single drive.
- 28:00Speaker 2: But it was always something stupid like that that would
- 28:02Speaker 2: mess us up. Or stupid as far as throwing another
- 28:07Speaker 2: screen like that to Lemon.
- 28:09Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know what they're doing.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I mean, I think they're trying to set something up
- 28:13Speaker 2: so the next time they run it, he's going to
- 28:15Speaker 2: go do that little orbit motion.
- 28:16Speaker 3: He's going to run out there, and they're going to
- 28:18Speaker 3: act like they're going to throw to him.
- 28:20Speaker 2: And I guarantee you, You have a streaking guy, rather
- 28:23Speaker 2: than like Wicks or somebody like that, streaking up the field,
- 28:27Speaker 2: acting like he's going to block and just take it
- 28:28Speaker 2: down the field and Jalen Hurts going to hit him
- 28:30Speaker 2: over the top because they see we're trying to force
- 28:33Speaker 2: the ball to Lennon.
- 28:35Speaker 3: And right now, you know, maybe they are.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Trying to set it up that, all right, we're going
- 28:38Speaker 2: to do something, you know, in our hands that, you know,
- 28:41Speaker 2: you don't think we're going to do, but we're going to.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Make it happen.
- 28:44Speaker 2: But I don't understand why we keep forcing his hand.
- 28:48Speaker 2: You see, I'm not saying he's not ready. But at
- 28:52Speaker 2: this point, the plays you're calling for, Lemon, are almost
- 28:54Speaker 2: like a waste because they're not working right now. So, man,
- 28:58Speaker 2: you got to turn the page. You got to go
- 29:00Speaker 2: on to something else that's going to work for you. So,
- 29:02Speaker 2: you know, he's my number one receiver in the draft.
- 29:08Speaker 2: But he's missed so much time, he's just got to
- 29:10Speaker 2: catch up. And they're trying to force him to catch up.
- 29:12Speaker 2: You know, give him a little time to see what's
- 29:14Speaker 2: going on. You know, feel the NFL. But eventually, you know,
- 29:17Speaker 2: he will be one of the better receivers on the squad.
- 29:21Speaker 2: But right now, he's just not. We got players like,
- 29:23Speaker 2: you know, my cousin, Cooper. Coop balling right now. Give
- 29:27Speaker 2: him more opportunities.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Wait, wait, what do you mean your cousin? That's my cousin, yeah. Wait,
- 29:34Speaker 3: derrick's cooper is your cousin coop is my cousin yeah.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Honest to god when did this happen it's been happy
- 29:42Speaker 1: i don't i don't want to just go bragging about
- 29:45Speaker 1: it yeah but it'd be he married my cousin my
- 29:48Speaker 1: my second cousin's daughter he married her yes oh so
- 29:52Speaker 1: he's your cousin by marriage he's your cousin by marriage
- 29:55Speaker 1: yeah yeah by marriage.
- 29:57Speaker 3: So your cousins that aren't married aren't your cousins?
- 30:01Speaker 1: No. They're my wife's cousins.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Your wife's cousins aren't your cousins?
- 30:07Speaker 1: No, they're my cousin-in-laws. Oh, cousin-in-laws. Anyway, you look at
- 30:14Speaker 1: the first half before we get derailed here. Look at
- 30:16Speaker 1: the first half stats. And the stats were lopsided. I mean,
- 30:21Speaker 1: the Eagles had 15 first downs. Tennessee had four. The
- 30:25Speaker 1: Eagles had 210 yards of offense, Tennessee at 96. The
- 30:31Speaker 1: Eagles had the ball for 21 minutes, 50 seconds to
- 30:35Speaker 1: Tennessee's eight minutes, 10 seconds. And yet it was only
- 30:39Speaker 1: a four point lead for the Eagles. And then all
- 30:41Speaker 1: of a sudden, oh my goodness, the third quarter roll around.
- 30:45Speaker 1: And just like against Washington, what is it about this
- 30:48Speaker 1: Eagles team on both sides of the football Barrett that
- 30:52Speaker 1: when the third quarter rolls around, all of a sudden,
- 30:56Speaker 1: Their complexion changes. It's like they can't do anything right.
- 31:00Speaker 1: They can't get off the field. They can't sustain drives.
- 31:03Speaker 1: What the heck is going on with this team when
- 31:05Speaker 1: it comes to the third quarter?
- 31:07Speaker 2: Well, I don't want this to become a theme, but
- 31:10Speaker 2: I guess we're getting outcoached going into the second half.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Other coaches make adjustments on the other side of the ball,
- 31:17Speaker 2: and we try to do the same thing. But once
- 31:21Speaker 2: they've made adjustments, we've got to make adjustments also. And
- 31:24Speaker 2: I think that's what's going on. You know, we want
- 31:26Speaker 2: to stick to the same thing, stick to the same
- 31:28Speaker 2: game plan. And it's not working because they've changed. They've
- 31:32Speaker 2: altered it.
- 31:32Speaker 3: So you got to have a match for their match.
- 31:37Speaker 2: You know, you got to put something else out there
- 31:41Speaker 2: to make them adjust to what you're doing. Or, you know,
- 31:44Speaker 2: you're just not going to have any success. The reason
- 31:46Speaker 2: why they're changing is because you've had success with that.
- 31:49Speaker 2: So they're not going to keep bumping their head against
- 31:50Speaker 2: the wall. Eventually, they're going to want to move their
- 31:53Speaker 2: head away from the wall. So you got to give
- 31:55Speaker 2: them another wall they can bump into. So until they,
- 31:57Speaker 2: you know, start really just changing how they approach halftime
- 32:03Speaker 2: and go out and understand, look, they're going to run
- 32:05Speaker 2: something totally different. They're going to stop us. What are
- 32:08Speaker 2: they doing against commanders in our run game? We run
- 32:11Speaker 2: them off successfully. All of a sudden, they start running
- 32:14Speaker 2: linebackers through the hole.
- 32:16Speaker 3: And that worked.
- 32:17Speaker 2: And, you know, eventually, you know, you got to say,
- 32:19Speaker 2: all right, we got to stop that. Well, this last game,
- 32:23Speaker 2: they really started twisting and doing stunts. And they were
- 32:26Speaker 2: stunting into us running the ball. So you got to
- 32:28Speaker 2: do something else to counter what they were doing. So
- 32:30Speaker 2: they got to find a counter for their counter. And
- 32:32Speaker 2: that's just a young officer coordinator. He'll eventually get the
- 32:36Speaker 2: hang of it and be able to throw me to
- 32:39Speaker 2: work in stuff also to make them effective. I think
- 32:42Speaker 2: the biggest thing concerning me is how teams are going
- 32:45Speaker 2: out and gutting our defense right at the middle in
- 32:48Speaker 2: the second half. That's, that's my biggest concern offensive. I
- 32:52Speaker 2: know we'll be okay, but I'm not okay with how
- 32:54Speaker 2: we're getting gutted right at the middle from the defensive
- 32:57Speaker 2: side of the ball.
- 32:58Speaker 1: You got too much money invested in that D line
- 33:02Speaker 1: with those, those two tackles for teams to be able
- 33:04Speaker 1: to control the line of scrimmage like that. And another
- 33:09Speaker 1: two game sample, same thing happened again. Now, I don't
- 33:13Speaker 1: know if it's a technique. I don't know if it's
- 33:15Speaker 1: just a matter of sliding to different gaps and trying
- 33:18Speaker 1: to gain the advantage. But you're right, Barrett. That's one
- 33:21Speaker 1: of the things that jumped out. You cannot let the opposition,
- 33:24Speaker 1: and again, you're talking about two inferior offensive lines against
- 33:28Speaker 1: your defensive front in Washington and Tennessee, and they're manhandling
- 33:33Speaker 1: you at the line of scrimmage. I don't know what
- 33:38Speaker 1: they can do, but they've got to do something because
- 33:41Speaker 1: You know, Bears like to run the ball. Rams like
- 33:43Speaker 1: to run the ball. Jacksonville wants to run the ball.
- 33:46Speaker 1: And so you can't let them keep gouging you like this, man.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Or Lady Luck's not going to shine brightly on you
- 33:52Speaker 1: the way it has the first two games.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 33:55Speaker 2: And you're not going to be able to continue to
- 33:56Speaker 2: just allow, you know, your defense to stay on the
- 34:00Speaker 2: field that long. You got to get them off the field.
- 34:02Speaker 2: They've got to do something. And, you know, I looked
- 34:04Speaker 2: at it. Our all-world linebacker, you know, Vaughn, Bond, he
- 34:10Speaker 2: had a tough one. He had a rough one. Both
- 34:12Speaker 2: him and Campbell had a rough one this last game.
- 34:14Speaker 2: I didn't say the same, you know, consistency. And I'm
- 34:17Speaker 2: going to tell you the reason why. The offensive line
- 34:21Speaker 2: was allowed.
- 34:21Speaker 3: To get up on him on the second level too easily.
- 34:24Speaker 2: I don't know what the difference was, but I saw
- 34:27Speaker 2: linebackers getting blocked from the offensive line at the second level.
- 34:33Speaker 2: The reason why Bond was, you know, so good last
- 34:35Speaker 2: week is because he wasn't getting touched until he got him.
- 34:38Speaker 3: So, you know, he got up into the line of
- 34:40Speaker 3: scrimmage because nobody was on him.
- 34:42Speaker 2: This game, they were able to manhandle our guys up front,
- 34:46Speaker 2: one-on-one block them, and they were able to get up
- 34:48Speaker 2: on our linebackers, which allowed them to have huge chunk
- 34:51Speaker 2: yardage in the run game, you know, eight yards a pop,
- 34:54Speaker 2: you know, right up the middle of the defense, the
- 34:57Speaker 2: jaws of the defense, where, you know, we got a
- 34:59Speaker 2: lot invested in it. So I think, you know, and
- 35:01Speaker 2: when I looked at it, once again, it was the
- 35:04Speaker 2: defensive guy's not staying in their gaps. The defensive guy's
- 35:09Speaker 2: not totally committing to what the defense is. They want
- 35:12Speaker 2: to go out and play somebody else's position. If you
- 35:15Speaker 2: got the B gap, stay your ass in the B gap.
- 35:18Speaker 3: Don't look in the C-gap. Don't worry about what's going
- 35:20Speaker 3: on in the C-gap.
- 35:21Speaker 2: You got your B-gap, and let the guy that's in
- 35:24Speaker 2: back of.
- 35:24Speaker 3: You or the guy that's inside of you.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Who has assigned the C-gap, let him mess with the C-gap.
- 35:31Speaker 2: But your job is the C-gap. I mean, B-gap, stay
- 35:34Speaker 2: in that B-gap. If you don't have the C-gap, don't
- 35:36Speaker 2: worry about it. Do your job. And if you do
- 35:39Speaker 2: your job, let 11 guys do their job, and you'll
- 35:43Speaker 2: play great defense. That's not what's happening. They'll peek inside.
- 35:47Speaker 2: And all of a sudden they peeked the other way
- 35:48Speaker 2: and all of a sudden they get drove over and
- 35:49Speaker 2: there goes the running back running right past him.
- 35:51Speaker 3: You just can't do that. You can't do that.
- 35:53Speaker 2: So, I mean, it has a lot of assignment things
- 35:56Speaker 2: as far as you got your assignment, you're there, but
- 35:59Speaker 2: then you want to go make somebody else's play.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Can't do that. You got to stay disciplined and stay
- 36:03Speaker 3: in your gap.
- 36:05Speaker 1: So we get to the fourth quarter, Tennessee goes down
- 36:08Speaker 1: the field, get the field goal, go up by three
- 36:11Speaker 1: points with one 56 left in the game. And to
- 36:15Speaker 1: be honest, um, I'm sitting here going, we got to
- 36:19Speaker 1: talk about the Eagles losing to this Tennessee team. What
- 36:21Speaker 1: was your thought at that point when they were up
- 36:23Speaker 1: by three points?
- 36:24Speaker 2: I was actually going down getting my jacket on for postgame,
- 36:28Speaker 2: and I'm sitting there like, I cannot believe it.
- 36:30Speaker 3: I'm going to go in here.
- 36:31Speaker 2: I'm about to go out and do this show with
- 36:34Speaker 2: them losing to the worst team in the NFL, a
- 36:37Speaker 2: team that only won four games last year.
- 36:40Speaker 3: Three games.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Three.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Three games. Sorry, three games. Team 1-3, yeah, I got
- 36:44Speaker 3: to go in and talk about this.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness. And I can't wait to my other co-hosts.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Someone's like, oh, my goodness. And all of a sudden,
- 36:52Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts puts that cap back on. He takes his
- 36:54Speaker 2: suit off. Got a big S on his chest. And
- 36:58Speaker 2: he's just start, you know, systematically. All right, I'm going
- 37:00Speaker 2: to throw it up to you, Wicks. I trust you, Wicks.
- 37:02Speaker 2: I want you all camp. Boom, I'll throw it up there.
- 37:04Speaker 2: I know you're going to catch it. Boom, he comes
- 37:06Speaker 2: down with it. Turns back around. Smitty, you know you're
- 37:08Speaker 2: my guy for the past couple years. You're the number one.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Let me get it to you. I'm going to toe
- 37:12Speaker 2: tap in. I'm going to get that. The body control
- 37:15Speaker 2: that Smitty has is amazing.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness. I was going to ask you about that. Oh,
- 37:18Speaker 3: my goodness. Come on now.
- 37:20Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, you know he's a number one. But
- 37:23Speaker 2: then when he does stuff like that, he's more than.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Just a number one. He's one of the best in
- 37:26Speaker 3: the business.
- 37:27Speaker 2: I mean, his body control is unbelievable.
- 37:29Speaker 3: He's only going down the field. Oh, I need to
- 37:31Speaker 3: put it on my chest. I'll go down there.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I'll run for a first down. I mean, he just
- 37:36Speaker 2: executed it. All of a sudden, bam, he gets back,
- 37:39Speaker 2: and Smitty opens up. And all of a sudden, he
- 37:41Speaker 2: hears Smitty. And then the body control he has, toe tap. Oh,
- 37:46Speaker 2: I'm going to do even better. I'm not going to
- 37:47Speaker 2: just do a toe tap. I'm going to put a
- 37:49Speaker 2: knee on the ground, too. Then I'm going to go
- 37:51Speaker 2: out of bounds. And Smitty is one of the most
- 37:56Speaker 2: refined receivers I've seen.
- 37:57Speaker 3: In a long time.
- 37:58Speaker 2: He can do just about anything he wants to do, man.
- 38:01Speaker 2: He is that good, man. So I was definitely impressed
- 38:03Speaker 2: with that. But then, you know... I'm looking at them.
- 38:06Speaker 2: I was like, what are they going to run on
- 38:07Speaker 2: this last play? Hmm, they're in bunch. So they're looking
- 38:10Speaker 2: at them. They're in bunch right. And I said, oh,
- 38:14Speaker 2: I bet they're going to run sprint right option. I
- 38:16Speaker 2: bet they're going to run sprint. I love sprint right option.
- 38:18Speaker 2: And then they put Smitty in motion. So all those
- 38:21Speaker 2: defenders lock in. Oh, they just follow him all the
- 38:24Speaker 2: way down the field? Of course they're going to give
- 38:26Speaker 2: it to their best receiver. They're going to run sprint
- 38:29Speaker 2: right option. He goes in motion and comes back into
- 38:32Speaker 2: the bunch. And I was like, bam, the ball snapped.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Mun goes in the inside. He takes the linebacker and
- 38:37Speaker 2: saves you on this side. Then all of a sudden,
- 38:39Speaker 2: the two corners, instead of going and, you know, one
- 38:43Speaker 2: of the guys covering.
- 38:44Speaker 3: My cousin, Darius Cooper. Cousin-in-law. Cousin-in-law. Cousin-in-law. He just runs
- 38:51Speaker 3: a little streak. And then all of a sudden, you know,
- 38:53Speaker 3: you look at Smitty. Smitty falls. Yeah. And both guys,
- 38:56Speaker 3: both guys look at him, and Smitty's all back there.
- 38:59Speaker 2: I mean, Darius is all back there by himself.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Goes up and get high points and and brings it down.
- 39:05Speaker 3: I'm like, come on, man. That's incredible, man. And here
- 39:09Speaker 3: I am. I'm hyped. Let's go.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Let's go, guys.
- 39:13Speaker 3: Let's go, guys. We're making it happen. We're making it happen.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:17Speaker 2: We just won this game. I can't believe that. So
- 39:19Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, I told you guys. I wasn't even
- 39:22Speaker 2: worried about nothing.
- 39:23Speaker 3: Yeah, OK. Yeah, OK.
- 39:25Speaker 1: So last week, you talk about a team that right
- 39:28Speaker 1: now is finding a ways to get it done, has
- 39:31Speaker 1: lady luck on their side. Last week they thwart a
- 39:35Speaker 1: two-point conversion to avoid a tie to go to overtime.
- 39:39Speaker 1: This week they walk it down the field and punch
- 39:41Speaker 1: it in with nine seconds left. You're not going to
- 39:43Speaker 1: survive like that every week, but the bottom line is
- 39:46Speaker 1: this is character-building stuff for this team. in terms of
- 39:50Speaker 1: finding ways to overcome adversity, and that's the most definitive
- 39:53Speaker 1: reason why, they're sitting here 2-0 right now.
- 39:57Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 39:58Speaker 2: They're sitting at 2-0, and they know they have so
- 40:03Speaker 2: much more that they need to do to keep things going.
- 40:07Speaker 2: You know, I don't think it's going to be like
- 40:09Speaker 2: it was before where they go in and they've won
- 40:11Speaker 2: like four games in a row, and they're 4-0, and
- 40:15Speaker 2: we're thinking, you know.
- 40:17Speaker 3: They can't sustain this, and boom, they couldn't sustain it.
- 40:19Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 40:20Speaker 2: I think this is totally different. They're going to work
- 40:23Speaker 2: and learn from this, but the biggest thing is they're
- 40:26Speaker 2: going to take what they're learning and apply it to
- 40:28Speaker 2: winning going forward.
- 40:30Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 40:31Speaker 2: They know they got a small amount of time to
- 40:33Speaker 2: maximize their winning potential with.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Not paying a quarterback, number one. You know, and hint, hint,
- 40:40Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts wants to get paid.
- 40:41Speaker 2: They got a chance right now to go ahead and
- 40:44Speaker 2: win while they're only paying a quarterback... a little bit
- 40:47Speaker 2: of what he deserves, and we got so many other
- 40:50Speaker 2: guys we got to pay. We're not going to be
- 40:51Speaker 2: able to pay them all. Let's take advantage of this
- 40:54Speaker 2: roster and go win a championship. They have everything that
- 40:57Speaker 2: they need, everything. We're just waiting right now for all
- 41:01Speaker 2: the pieces to come in and stack together. You know,
- 41:03Speaker 2: I mean, this could be a really, really good team
- 41:07Speaker 2: if they get it together, a really good team.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Well, no matter how they get it done, the bottom
- 41:11Speaker 1: line is they are two up and zero down. And,
- 41:15Speaker 1: of course, coming up next, the Chicago Bears, and the
- 41:18Speaker 1: Bears have a few problems. And, of course, we will
- 41:20Speaker 1: be back next week to talk about the Eagles-Bears matchup
- 41:25Speaker 1: on this edition of Birds Weekly. So until then, for
- 41:29Speaker 1: my colleague, friend, cousin-in-law, Barrett Brooks, I'm Derrick Gunn.
- 41:34Speaker 3: We'll see you next time.
- 41:38Speaker 2: We'll see you next time.
