Speaker 3: Do you ever feel guilty when you rest?
• 0:56
Speaker 4: No. I don't feel guilty anymore. I think what what you you do the best you can. I need to do at 04:00, no matter where I am in the workspace. I have to now take my shoes off or my sneakers and put my feet up and take an hour to myself.
• 1:12
There is no such thing as a perfect holiday.
• 1:31
Speaker 3: Welcome back to another episode of Excuse My Grandma. It's Kim and my cohosts. Grandma Gail. Somehow we blinked and it's already December.
• 1:38
Speaker 4: I know. That's what happens. The minute Thanksgiving is over, the trees go up, the lights go on, and
• 1:44
Speaker 3: Mariah Carey goes on. Exactly. Exactly. People wanna stretch it out as long as possible, but we're in Palm Beach for the month, so it feels less festive here anyway, kinda.
• 1:52
Speaker 4: Well, they did like the tree on Worth Avenue this week, So that that's a little bit of holiday cheer according to the South. And they're also they have a sand castle that's going up this week that's, I think, the heaviest weighs tons. They build it like a Christmas tree
• 2:07
  Speaker 3: in West Palm.
• 2:08
Speaker 4: No, no, no, West Palm Beach.
• 2:09
Speaker 3: They do it there too.
• 2:11
Speaker 4: No, but this is a major one. This is the largest one that's ever done in
• 2:15
Speaker 3: The United States. Really? Yeah. I wanna go see that.
• 2:17
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's great. It's great. You could go. They keep it on for at least a month.
• 2:23
Speaker 3: I know you don't usually buy gifts, you're more of like a I'm giving a check kind of person.
• 2:27
Speaker 4: Well, Hanukkah well, used to buy gifts when the children were little because it was fun for them to open the gifts. But, you know, at this point, nobody needs a toy. Nobody needs a Lego.
• 2:36
Speaker 3: Although I got a Woody toy from Disney. Did you see me post that?
• 2:40
Speaker 4: I saw you post that, and I was thinking to myself, was gonna call you, and then I I zipped my mouth because you shouldn't have opened that box.
• 2:47
Speaker 3: I Cause then it loses its value.
• 2:49
Speaker 4: Exactly. That's a classic toy. I hope you didn't throw the box
• 2:52
Speaker 3: I did throw the box in.
• 2:53
Speaker 4: Oh, well now it's worthless.
• 2:54
Speaker 3: Apparently on eBay, commented it's like $2,000 Yes. Not selling it, but I think it would have way
• 3:01
Speaker 4: too for your children to give it the box when they But eventually now it's you could just give them the toy. It's it has no value anymore.
• 3:09
Speaker 3: Now there's just a doll on my couch Exactly. Which is like kind of weird. I know. But I don't know where to put it. Like, where do you put a toy?
• 3:17
In In an adult's a drawer. Yeah. I guess so. But I'm starting to think about gifts and slightly panicking because I never know what to get people, and also who to get gifts for. Well, I think, like, people who do services for you, I
• 3:32
Speaker 4: think a check or not a check. Cash is usually the most important.
• 3:35
Speaker 3: I brought everyone Lindor truffles, like the chocolates.
• 3:38
  Speaker 4: Oh, that's nice.
• 3:39
  Speaker 3: But I mean That's
• 3:40
Speaker 4: nice thing. But for people who do services in your buildings or when you go to the hairdresser or if you go to a specific nail place all the time, I think a little extra in their pockets is very important at this time of the year.
• 3:52
Speaker 3: Yes. But then for my boyfriend, my parents, you have to get gifts right?
• 3:58
Speaker 4: You know you buy a little something. I don't think anybody expects you to buy anything major.
• 4:02
Speaker 3: What does a mom or a grandma want for a gift? Just they have a
• 4:07
Speaker 4: a lot on your face.
• 4:08
Speaker 3: No, mom wants a gift. She's always like where's my gift if I don't get something? Right.
• 4:12
Speaker 4: I never expect a gift. I think something sweet and something that could be some small thing like a beautiful little candle, or you're not gonna buy your mom or your grandma or your other grandma a bag of any sort. I I think it's just it's just a thought. So it could be a perfume if you know that the scent they like. That's very hard.
• 4:36
That's a little tricky because there's so many scents out there. Even a beautiful I was thinking about this. I love the scented soaps that some of the places have like you know, that are very, very nice and they come in beautiful packaging.
• 4:49
Speaker 3: So something in the beauty department. We're gonna go through a list of more timeless gift ideas.
• 4:55
Speaker 4: And for your boyfriend, I have no idea what what he would like. Whatever his hobby, and maybe he likes to play golf or whatever, then you buy something that's a a necessity for this for the game.
• 5:05
Speaker 3: Also, some guys I feel don't have the necessities because they don't think about that stuff. Oh.
• 5:13
  Speaker 4: For instance.
• 5:14
Speaker 3: For instance, I'm trying to like dress shoes. Well I don't think it's it's girlfriend or or should buy her. I know it's
• 5:21
Speaker 4: not significant other dress shoes. I mean, that's embarrassing. I mean, no. I don't think that's a place for you. You're not a wife or no.
• 5:30
I wouldn't I don't think that's right. I think it should be something a sweater or something something that he probably wouldn't go buy himself. If it's a necessity gift, let he should be mature enough to buy it himself.
• 5:41
Speaker 3: Yeah. But I feel with a sweater, isn't that kind of a necessity gift?
• 5:45
Speaker 4: No. Everybody has one sweater. They don't need two or three. This is just a pretty color or something a little, you know, a little splashy for the holiday that he might not have bought himself.
• 5:55
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 5:55
Speaker 4: Or a belt. I think belts are always nice too. Yeah. Nice buckle.
• 5:59
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 6:00
Speaker 4: Because guys all wear that with either their work pants or their jeans.
• 6:04
Speaker 3: Grandma, are you going to a bunch of holiday parties? You're always so popular in
• 6:08
Speaker 4: Vegas. I'm going to one today. You see me all dressed up in in gold. But, you know, I'm wearing a a sleeveless shirt. It's very warm in Florida right now for those watching the podcast.
• 6:18
And but when you go inside, it's freezing. So you always have to put a sweater on. So I am actually going someplace where I know it's gonna be cold, so I'm wearing a sweater. You don't need a sweater right now outside.
• 6:32
Speaker 3: Can I crash any of your friends' holiday parties? They're always so fabulous.
• 6:35
Speaker 4: I don't know how fabulous this is. I'm I'm sure I'm gonna play Canasta and lose some money. I don't think you'd wanna crash this.
• 6:41
Speaker 3: Not a card party, but if Yeah. You have anything more
• 6:45
Speaker 4: you know what? At this point, I think just to go and have a nice meal with friends is more than enough. Actually we're going to a couple of things. Somebody said that they want us to wear something shiny. I have to look at my card, I don't know what shiny Oh,
• 6:56
Speaker 3: that could be a fun Needs
• 6:57
Speaker 4: to be plastic or something. Yeah, plastic. I like a sixties theme or you know like
• 7:03
Speaker 3: Oh, I was thinking sequins.
• 7:04
Speaker 4: Oh, could be sequins. I'm not getting that trendy.
• 7:06
  Speaker 3: I think that's more sparkly.
• 7:07
Speaker 4: That could be. Diamonds. Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Yes, that's always fun to wear.
• 7:13
Speaker 3: Yes. Christmas Eve, Christmas dinner,
• 7:18
Speaker 4: worst We have plans. We have plans. I made a big table at a restaurant down here called Trevini. They were very accommodating. When you need to have 12 or 14 people, there are not very many places that will do that.
• 7:31
So BJ does it. There are some that do do it, but you have to ask for a very long time in advance. I went into one restaurant and they laughed. They said, where were you a month ago? I said, I
• 7:41
Speaker 3: don't know. People book it that far in advance.
• 7:43
Speaker 4: They book it far in advance because I guess I was wrong because you know your family is coming down. Because most of the places really don't wanna do more
• 7:52
Speaker 3: than six. The funny thing is though, we're Jewish, but we still go out on Christmas Eve and Christmas. Like why?
• 7:59
Speaker 4: Is really we don't have a Christmas dinner. We could do a holiday dinner. But it's on Christmas. Yeah. Well, because that's what happens.
• 8:05
Speaker 3: But for those Jews who don't do Christmas dinner and you're just gonna go to the movies and get Chinese, any good Chinese places you wanna recommend?
• 8:13
  Speaker 4: Not in Florida.
• 8:14
  Speaker 3: In New York?
• 8:16
Speaker 4: I'm really go down to Chinatown. And then there's one that my granddaughter loves, the dumpling place.
• 8:22
Speaker 3: Din Din Tai Fang. Yes.
• 8:24
Speaker 4: She's raving about that from Shanghai. Evidently, there's a line. It takes you an hour, an hour and a half, then they then you put your you put your name, and when you get to be your turn, they tell you you're a mile away. You can come now. I mean, I never heard of this.
• 8:37
But, you know, that that's a very New York thing. Down here, I think the probably one of the best ones are Imoto or That's Japanese. House.
• 8:46
  Speaker 3: And that's Japanese.
• 8:47
Speaker 4: Well, it's not it's Japanese. It's Asian Rim or Bukan. Bukan just got awarded the chef awarded the best chef in
• 8:55
Speaker 3: I think last year too.
• 8:56
Speaker 4: Right. He got it again this year. He is a very good chef.
• 8:58
Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay. And then Hanukkah also obviously coming up. Remind me what our Hanukkah traditions are. Well, you have
• 9:05
Speaker 4: a menorah and you light your candle. You have your your eight days of Hanukkah with the festival of lights.
• 9:10
Speaker 3: Let's do Grandma Gail's Hebrew school. How do you light a menorah again, right
• 9:14
Speaker 4: You to do the middle candle first, and then you take it and light from the outside in, at least that's the way I do it. And you usually have a little latkes with it. It could be with sour cream or apple sauce on it. Hanukkah is a miracle of light. And I think we in this times need a miracle of some sort.
• 9:35
So I always love it. It's a very pleasant holiday. It's a joyous holiday.
• 9:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, think people especially need the holidays right now and are looking forward to We have a dreidel, we have gelt.
• 9:46
Speaker 4: I have all that. Which is chocolate Right, I have chocolate gelt, right. They do it in the market, have that gold wrapping on with milk chalk and on the side, and the kids always like to get that. Yeah. And the dreidels are always fun.
• 9:58
Yeah. We'll show that on the podcast because we're gonna make potato latkes one day, I
• 10:02
Speaker 3: think, So with On our social media, definitely check out. It's at excuse my grandma on Instagram and TikTok. Follow along our holiday journey for sure on there.
• 10:10
Speaker 4: No. That's good. We're good at potato pancakes. We're That's one of our best delicacies that we make.
• 10:15
Speaker 3: I think it's the only thing we It's
• 10:16
Speaker 4: the only thing we make well.
• 10:18
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Also, good time to give back around the holidays. I actually just volunteered at the Met Council in New York. People should look it up.
• 10:26
Was really easy to go package up some Thanksgiving meals is what we did, but they have stuff all holiday season. Right. So I'm excited to do a little bit more of giving back this season as well.
• 10:37
Speaker 4: Well, last week was giving back Tuesday, so I think it's very important. Everybody is giving. I mean, look at that tremendous gift that Michael Dell did for all the young children. I think it was a $6,000,000,000 gift that he gave to put seed money into all young children that they can develop into eventually a college fund or whatever you want to do it after the
• 11:02
Speaker 3: 18 Yeah, what you guys should all do is donate $6,000,000,000 because we all have that in
• 11:06
Speaker 4: our culture. But he created himself, he was a genius, and he's giving back to the world. He's giving back to American children, which is really our future. And I think it was a special, special gift that he gave, and a shout out to the whole Dell family.
• 11:22
Speaker 3: So Grandma Gal, we also have a holiday rule to share.
• 11:26
Speaker 4: Well, I think if you're going to bring drama to the table, at least bring dessert. I think that's true. I don't think drama belongs at the tables. I'm sort of sick of everybody's drama. The world is in precarious position right now.
• 11:44
We have wars all over the place. And I think people should be a lot more forgiving of each other and be kind. We really need that in 2025.
• 11:55
Speaker 3: A few timeless gift ideas to share with the people for inspiration?
• 12:00
Speaker 4: Well, I candles, I think candles, like you said, you know, you always love a candle. And there's so many different shapes. You can of course, you had that pumpkin one for for for Halloween, then you switched to a different one for winter. But I think there's some generic candles that people like to put out all the time. I know I have special you know, there's certain winter scents.
• 12:20
There's summer scents. There are rose scents. They're they sometimes have a a eucalyptus. They're all different kinds. So take a sniff if you like it.
• 12:29
Have them package it as a gift. It's always appreciated. Everybody loves to put it around in their either their bedroom or their living room or the bathroom.
• 12:36
Speaker 3: I feel like a candle is easy because also it's kind of annoying to get a gift that's super trendy and then you're not gonna use it again like six months later. So something that feels timeless even if it's like a framed photo
• 12:51
Speaker 4: What about an Amazon gift card too which I think the young people all like. Then they can buy their
• 12:56
  Speaker 1: own Sure.
• 12:57
Speaker 4: See, think a lot of that stuff is really terrific because then they can buy exactly what they want. There's so many people that don't know what to give a 14 or a 15 year old. Yeah. So I think those things are great gifts. And just put in a pretty card, could you even put a ribbon around the card to make it festive.
• 13:13
Speaker 3: Would you still give somebody a cookbook? Well, I would.
• 13:18
Speaker 4: An easy cookbook. Like I love Aina Garden's cook recipes. She makes it simple. The Joy of the, I was looking at something, The Settlement Cookbook, which was the cookbook that I used when I got married. My mother gave it to me.
• 13:32
It's an old, old fashioned cookbook. They were simple recipes, and and they they still, worked. You know, you could make a stew, could make a roast, you could make whatever you wanted easily. Something that's not too difficult. Of course now all the cookbooks have such beautiful photography.
• 13:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, like Stephanie Nasses She who came on our had such a nice
• 13:54
Speaker 4: She had a beautiful cookbook. And also table settings along with it. So you know, it makes it look festive and you get an idea how you perhaps might wanna set up your holiday table.
• 14:05
Speaker 3: I also think a piece of jewelry, whether it's something like a really classic brand like Tiffany's or there's like trendier brands that kind of feel a little vintage like Heaven Mayhem. And I
• 14:17
Speaker 4: don't even think it has to real. I think it can be anything
• 14:20
Speaker 3: Yeah, Blue Nile has amazing lab grown and natural actually as well.
• 14:25
Speaker 4: And I think you can just go pick something up that you know might fit the person's mood. Whether the color she likes or whatever. And it's very big this year, the lapel pins. So you saw all the guys in the Academy wear, all the men wearing pins.
• 14:38
Speaker 3: At the Oscars, yeah.
• 14:39
Speaker 4: And at the Oscars, but they've been also wearing it. It's a tremendous trend right now. And I think that's a great gift, whether it be costume or something real or maybe something your grandmother or mother had, and you stick it on a lapel now and it just, it makes it very modern looking.
• 14:54
Speaker 3: We also have our hats, which everyone They're should definitely available on Amazon. You can get one that says, Excuse My Grandma, if you're a big fan of the show. Can get one that says Or if you have
• 15:04
Speaker 4: a grandma that you want to excuse. Everybody has a grandma that they want to give a gift to. That's a great hat.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, we also have one that says, Not My Type, if you are dating and it's like a funnier gift as well, so definitely get those on Amazon.
• 15:17
Speaker 4: Okay, no one other gift I think is very nice, Kim, that I just thought about as we were thinking. I really think a picture of perhaps an old graduation picture or a wedding picture or something to do with whole family together in a pretty frame or in a contemporary frame of some sort that would go with the person's decor. That's very nice to give a mother or grandmother or an aunt or an uncle. You know, perhaps they're in with the whole family. I think that's a great gift.
• 15:47
Speaker 3: Let's move on to the grandma report. There is a clip from Mel Robbins podcast about how to avoid holiday burnout. And it comes from like constantly being busy, comparing yourself to others, feeling guilty about resting. Do you ever feel guilty when you rest?
• 16:07
Speaker 4: No. I don't feel guilty anymore. I think what what you do the best you can. I need to do at 04:00 no matter where I am in the workspace. I have to now take my shoes off or my sneakers and put my feet up and take an hour to myself.
• 16:24
Whether whatever it could be, I I don't think people should feel guilty. You know, it's too much of this going around. We do our best. Don't add extra layers on over the holidays. And it doesn't have to be perfect.
• 16:36
There is no such thing as a perfect holiday. Somebody's going to spill the wine on the table. Somebody is going to drop something in the kitchen. It always happens. It doesn't matter.
• 16:45
I used to have a brother that no matter how you set the table, the wine spilled the first fifteen minutes of the meal. So, and it was no big deal. You wipe it up, who cares? We're not all about perfection. It's about being together and spreading cheer around.
• 17:00
And also I do think, like you said, I think so much if in the morning when you can volunteer service at one of the many, many food banks or different places in your neighborhood. Everybody has them. And look in your pantry and see what you can give away. There's loads of stuff that's not open that you're not going to use. Put it in a bag and bring it over to the church or your synagogue, and it'll go to somebody who really does need those articles.
• 17:27
So I think that's something that everybody can do. And don't feel guilty about not being perfect. Nobody is perfect except for maybe me and you. Well, what are
• 17:37
Speaker 3: the moments during the holidays that you do get stressed out or overwhelmed or not at all?
• 17:40
Speaker 4: I don't get stressed out at all over any holiday.
• 17:42
Speaker 3: Do you feel like you overcommit?
• 17:44
Speaker 4: No, because I don't do that. I really don't. You know what? I don't like to do more than one or two things in a day. Now that I'm working, do, you know, if I work, I'll work and then I have to come home and decompress and relax for a while.
• 18:00
Because I do have a husband, and he wants his time too with me. So I think everybody has to sort of allocate different areas, and don't over put too many activities in one day. It's not fair to you or your body. So just and still take a walk. If it gets overwhelming, the best advice I used to do, even when I had little kids, if things got out of hand in the house and the kids started crying or somebody was arguing, I used to say, I'll see you later and take a walk.
• 18:29
Take a walk for fifteen minutes, go around the block just to get back to your own equilibrium.
• 18:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think a big stress of mine is definitely that I over commit. Like you always kind of say, you're like, did
• 18:42
  Speaker 4: you do
• 18:42
Speaker 3: 10 things in one day? No, you can't. And it's very stressful because then you feel like you didn't get everything done. Right, right. So that is definitely I mean it's hard barrier
• 18:51
Speaker 4: to to what you do. And it is hard, I understand that. But you sometimes have to just say no.
• 18:56
Speaker 3: But like a lot of things you actually do have to get done, but yeah, it's about like outsourcing or say, okay, is this something that can be done tomorrow and prioritizing the things that have to be done today? Or maybe you can't go out for dinner every night or whatever it is. I agree. Okay, quick, Let's do the rewind.
• 19:13
Speaker 5: This episode is brought to you by Redfin. But Redfin isn't just built for endless browsing. It's built to help you find and own a home. With agents who close twice as many deals, when you find the one, you've got a real shot at getting it.
• 19:37
Get started at redfin.com. Own the dream.
• 19:45
Speaker 3: Stranger Things has come out part one of season five. Right. And I'm obsessed. Okay. Zach and I binged all four episodes in a row.
• 19:55
Speaker 4: We That's what we do.
• 19:56
Speaker 3: In his parents building they have a little movie theater so we watched it in there and made it a whole thing. Thing is it's hard to get back into because there's been You forget. So many That you forget. And I watched a quick YouTube video to remind me but it's still like I forgot a lot of stuff. But obviously it's set in the eighties so it has all that nostalgia.
• 20:15
I wanted to run some things by you from the show and see if you remember this from the eighties. Okay. So there was a lot of references to Back to the Future,
• 20:25
  Speaker 4: That that movie.
• 20:27
Speaker 3: That was like a big deal, right? Yes, yes. It was like the first sci fi thing that people got into. Yeah, and this is a sci fi show, so it takes a lot from that. The kids literally bike miles everywhere.
• 20:39
They're always on their bikes in their neighborhood.
• 20:40
Speaker 4: Well that was very, you know that's in the country. That's in the suburbs. Was popular even when I was growing up. Which is prehistoric age. But the funny thing is
• 20:49
Speaker 3: like they obviously don't have cell phones. Their parents aren't checking in with them when they're out all day. But they weren't doing anything.
• 20:56
Speaker 4: Nobody was doing anything. Were biking to the friend's house or they were biking to a-
• 21:01
Speaker 3: In this case they're defeating monsters,
• 21:02
Speaker 4: but yeah, like- Right. Most people didn't have the monsters to defeat.
• 21:06
Speaker 3: No one tracked their kids?
• 21:07
Speaker 4: No, no. Had, your children, you know, of before we had phones and all the social media, people weren't as worried. There were always, you know, people gave their children guidelines. You couldn't go here or you couldn't go there. And most children did listen.
• 21:22
If they didn't, they usually got in trouble and somebody always snitched. So there was always somebody in the crowd that said, Oh, I saw so and so in the wrong place. So then they got punished.
• 21:31
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's funny. They also all use their walkie talkies to communicate
• 21:35
Speaker 4: with Right, each so that was even later. That was right.
• 21:38
Speaker 3: And they all play like Dungeons and Dragons. Right. D and D, I guess that was like a popular game.
• 21:45
Speaker 4: Yeah, well that was sort of when, I mean, at that point I wasn't doing that. Yeah. I had children in the eighties, so my kids were already in high school. Yeah. So, but I do remember they played those games.
• 21:55
Speaker 3: Also there's a lot about government surveillance. I don't know if that was a true thing.
• 22:00
Speaker 4: I don't know. I think we have worse government surveillance now. I mean, there's nothing, there's no street anywhere in the world that now doesn't have cameras. So they can, and you know, anybody who thinks their conversations on their phones are private are delusional. It's all tracked, and they can pull anything out of the cloud.
• 22:17

Speaker 4: that's so pretty. I mean, we don't I don't have a tree in my house, but I think if I had a tree, I think sometimes having them from another generation would be quite beautiful. I know people love to collect that. I have a granddaughter, not you, but another granddaughter that put a tree up and she's doing everything in blue and white. Yeah.
• 23:04

• 23:53
I don't know how, where I even found the stocking. I think I was 10 or 11 And years I put it in on our fireplace and maybe I was younger because my brothers were infants. And so I just put my one stocking up and the next morning my mother put potatoes in the stocking.
• 24:09

• 24:10
Speaker 4: I told you that story. That was the end of Christmas. It's like Wait, why?

• 24:36
And if anybody gets, also the other thing that I think is Christmassy, if you ever get a chance to go to New York City over the Christmas holidays, try to get tickets for the children for the Rockettes. It's still the greatest show on earth, and it's a wonderful thing, and they have the nativity scene. It really is a wonderful I
