- 0:20Banter with the boys.
- 0:31Yo welcome back to Banter with the boys fast laps.
- 0:36Back at it again with the Australian GP recap and Japan preview.
- 0:44But first let's obviously bring everybody in here.
- 0:47I always start across the table so let's start next to me this time.
- 0:50Joe, what's poppin?
- 0:52What's up, what's up? Happy to be here.
- 0:54Happier after that last result.
- 0:57I'm looking forward to the next one.
- 0:59Nice, alright sounds good.
- 1:01And again recording on a Tuesday.
- 1:03So I think my thing will just be to ask Cole how his week's going.
- 1:07Every week so Cole how's your week going?
- 1:09Not too shabby. It's not snowing. Last week that was horrible.
- 1:12I know we live in Minnesota.
- 1:14Come on let's bring it back to 60 for me.
- 1:17Bring it on back to 60. We're ready for spring.
- 1:20That's for dang sure.
- 1:22And of course last but not least Tyler what's going on?
- 1:27What's happening brother? Doing good man.
- 1:30The snow last week definitely sucked.
- 1:32I am ready for it to be spring.
- 1:34Ready to hit the links maybe two, three times this whole year.
- 1:37Because it's probably all that's feasible for me with two kids and another one on the way.
- 1:41But those two, three times are going to be a blast brother.
- 1:44Do you have a foursome you go out with?
- 1:48I mean depends.
- 1:51Well I guess that was kind of a weird question.
- 1:55I'm talking on the golf course.
- 1:58For the golf course no.
- 2:00Oh well hit me up homie.
- 2:02Definitely will hit you up.
- 2:04What's going on? But anyway obviously we can't forget about Kev.
- 2:08He makes all this stuff happen.
- 2:10So we'll just head right into the Australian Grand Prix recap.
- 2:19And diving right into the Australian Grand Prix recap.
- 2:24Just I mean during this race we had a combined ten time world champion drivers.
- 2:31Like total championships just sitting watching this race.
- 2:34Because they retired.
- 2:36I mean it was a crazy race. It lived up to the hype.
- 2:39We had that carnage we were looking for.
- 2:42So I just, I mean right away we just, you know good for Carlos.
- 2:48Obviously he came in singing smooth operator. That's great.
- 2:54You know we had the great quote from Gunther.
- 2:57That was Vamos Carlos.
- 2:59But we got to talk about Max retiring early.
- 3:03Were we excited gentlemen about that?
- 3:06Real excited dude.
- 3:08Were you excited about the fact that you had a Verstappen win or a Red Bull podium even?
- 3:13It was great dude.
- 3:15As soon as it happened, especially with how early it happened,
- 3:17I was just excited that we were going to have an actual race on our hands here.
- 3:22Now it didn't end up being much of a race for number one.
- 3:24Because Sian's kind of just ran away with it and took it from there.
- 3:26You know so it was like I honestly would have kind of liked to see how Sian's would have done against Verstappen.
- 3:32With the way that Ferrari looks right now.
- 3:34It was the first race, now obviously Verstappen kind of had that brake issue from the jump.
- 3:38But it was the first race that Max wasn't able to separate and get a one second gap to break that DRS zone going into lap two.
- 3:45It was the first race that had happened.
- 3:47So Sian's was on his butt and then he was past him.
- 3:52Now again, Verstappen had issues.
- 3:54But like it was a fun race to watch.
- 3:57Absolutely. That car looked fast.
- 3:59I know when it happened the group chat kind of blew up about it.
- 4:03And I had money on one of the March Madness games.
- 4:06So I wasn't watching at the time.
- 4:08So I had to restart it like right when it happened.
- 4:11And then mute the group chat just to see what happened first.
- 4:13Luckily it was only lap three I think right.
- 4:16So it didn't really affect too much.
- 4:18But no I think it's awesome.
- 4:20You know I mean I'm pretty openly against Verstappen.
- 4:23So to see him win.
- 4:24And Red Bull as a whole.
- 4:25Yep. Pumpt did not see them in podium.
- 4:27Pumpt did not see him finishing the race in first.
- 4:30And I have to agree with Tyler.
- 4:31I'm really curious to see how this week goes because I mean that Ferrari looks quick.
- 4:35Yeah that Ferrari does look really quick.
- 4:39Man. Lap two to four.
- 4:41I feel like I was getting blown up on the phone.
- 4:43I had people reaching out to me that had never reached out to me about F1.
- 4:46Just excited for a change in the race.
- 4:49It was so exciting.
- 4:51And yeah really Carlos Sainz coming in getting a win 16 days after having a surgery.
- 4:57What a tank.
- 4:59Like dudes unstoppable.
- 5:01I think I mean Ferrari what are they thinking right now.
- 5:05Right.
- 5:06No no doubt no doubt.
- 5:08And I mean you know so with Max's brakes stuck on.
- 5:14I'd imagine that won't be a problem going forward.
- 5:16Red Bull probably correct that issue.
- 5:19But winning 19 of his last 20 coming into this race if I'm not mistaken was it Joe.
- 5:25Yeah 19 of his last 20.
- 5:28And then including winning the last nine races.
- 5:31He would have tied his own record of 10 consecutive wins that he set last year if he would have won this last race.
- 5:37Yeah so obviously all of our predictions included for Stappen in there and we were all wrong.
- 5:42But so the Australia curse is just back again for Max for Stappen.
- 5:47You know what I mean.
- 5:48Like it's just weird to see it's great to see.
- 5:51I mean hopefully we get you know maybe a little bit closer season in the championship points for as far as teams go.
- 5:57But let's talk about Ferrari a little bit.
- 6:00I mean yeah Carlos Leclerc running a good race but Carlos is running away with it.
- 6:05I mean he looked good in that car.
- 6:07I mean is that something we're going to see you know maybe even this weekend.
- 6:11But I mean just the season as a whole is Carlos really going to be able to show and prove that he deserves maybe a shot at that Red Bull seat.
- 6:19I know we saw some April Fool's stuff going on but is that does he have a legitimate chance.
- 6:24I think he does especially with how he's been performing.
- 6:28Obviously he's the only other racer besides Verstappen to win.
- 6:33But what also happened there is I mean we always talk about Charles and how Charles is definitely their number one.
- 6:40Charles is their top driver.
- 6:41But have we overlooked science this whole time because we all everybody talks about Charles and he's a top guy.
- 6:47But I mean I think we overlooked Carlos.
- 6:49He's a dog.
- 6:50When it comes to winning races he's a guy Charles will get you the points for sure.
- 6:54But I'm a big Carlos fan now even more.
- 6:57I completely agree with you especially on that last point.
- 6:59Carlos I mean he's proven he's the only person outside of a Red Bull to win a race in the last however many races.
- 7:06I think it will come down to is he as consistent as Charles.
- 7:10I think we've got to look at everything.
- 7:11I don't think he was that consistent last year.
- 7:13I feel like he had a few bad races and maybe that's why Ferrari chose not to go with him again.
- 7:18In the following year.
- 7:20But man he's proven something.
- 7:22There's still a lot of season to go.
- 7:24I'm sure he can still mess something up.
- 7:26But I hope he takes us and runs with it.
- 7:29No absolutely.
- 7:30I think Carlos has always been like a ridiculously underrated driver for his his actual talent.
- 7:37Even when he was in like McLaren he wasn't the number one.
- 7:40He goes he got he got booted from what was it Renault.
- 7:45No I'm sorry it was Ocon.
- 7:46I'm thinking of Ocon the Ocon situation where he got booted and came back.
- 7:49But he's just always been so underrated and it's I never understood really why he's bounced around with all these teams.
- 7:57I mean in terms of like Ferrari not choosing him I don't think it has anything to do with Carlos right.
- 8:02It simply has to do with you are getting Lewis Hamilton all that he brings outside of the racing ability which is obviously top notch.
- 8:10You could make a very strong argument against that this year in terms of him versus Carlos.
- 8:13So really the top five or six in this race alone outside of Stroll.
- 8:18But it's it's it's Lewis Hamilton.
- 8:21You're not going to turn that down for Ferrari.
- 8:24But I mean even even with that obviously Charles is younger and he's kind of on the climb now with everything as far as he's got more future with Red Bull or sorry with Ferrari which is huge.
- 8:37And I mean if you're Carlos so where do you want to go. You know like where do you look to go after this.
- 8:43I think you have to have the hope that you might get looked at for that Red Bull seat.
- 8:48I mean the car is quick right now and if he if he could get if he could have kept up with Max potentially this race in the Ferrari like we could see a battle going back and forth you know.
- 9:00But maybe Max's ego you know sorry Netherlands folks but like maybe Max's ego gets in the way a little bit like we saw with Ricardo early on.
- 9:11Maybe you see a little bit of that with Carlos because he's good enough to compete and beat Max potentially in a Red Bull car.
- 9:17Absolutely and I mean with what you said even with like the inconsistencies that you guys are like saying like even last year like there were two spots away in the WDC but it was by six points.
- 9:28Like with all of Ferrari's technical issues that they have with the car especially last year with all the issues they had.
- 9:34Now Charles had his fair share as well don't get me wrong. I just I mean when it's only a six point difference like that that's really not an inconsistency to me in the grand scheme of things.
- 9:43Six points in the whole season and then I mean cool with what you said about the age they're only three years apart.
- 9:48That's nothing in F1.
- 9:50No doubt and Carlos being only 29 years old he just surpasses a thousandth point.
- 9:55Yeah.
- 9:56How many F1 drivers actually make it to that point even.
- 9:59I mean there's something to be said about that. I think you have to take a serious look at.
- 10:04Carlos looks old. He looks so much older than Charles I would have never guessed. I've honestly never looked up his age.
- 10:12I know Charles is young obviously but I never looked up Carlos's age. I thought he was like 35.
- 10:16You know he looks like an older cat.
- 10:18He looks like 29 bro and Charles also has a baby face too so he looks far younger than he is.
- 10:23So but yeah I mean with Red Bull I think if Carlos was if Carlos really truly cares about wanting to win a championship
- 10:32which every F1 driver does that's the ultimate goal.
- 10:34Like Red Bull is the only true shot he really has like with all the other team openings.
- 10:38Aston's not going to give him a chance. Mercedes isn't going to give him a chance at winning.
- 10:42I mean I think Mercedes is so light years behind Ferrari and Red Bull at this point even with the new regulations in 2026
- 10:48with everybody building a completely new car I just don't see Mercedes competing anytime soon.
- 10:53I agree but I still think Mercedes has that seat open and I think they're going to offer it to him when push comes to shove.
- 11:00We were just talking before the pod Kimi's not doing amazing so far in F2.
- 11:05So if that seat's open and Red Bull for some reason goes with one of the V-Carbs or for some reason keeps Perez
- 11:12Merc might be the best option or he's waiting for Audi to come in and take that spot.
- 11:18Even that Audi spot so even if you wanted that Audi spot you could still sign a one year deal with Red Bull.
- 11:23I don't think Red Bull is going to like necessarily and well this is 100% all contingent on what Max Verstappen decides what he's going to do.
- 11:31I don't think he's leaving Red Bull. He'd be stupid to leave Red Bull.
- 11:34Especially if it wasn't for a Ferrari like it's not a lot of kids dreams to grow up driving for Mercedes.
- 11:39You know if you're driving in the pin. Now Lewis changed that.
- 11:42Maybe give it like another 5, 6, 7 years. Yeah Lewis probably like created that but no you're right though.
- 11:48100% agree but you got Schumacher with Ferrari like it's just Ferrari.
- 11:51That's where you want to grow as your kid growing up watching the sport most typically right.
- 11:56So I mean I don't know why Red Bull wouldn't offer Carlos the book at this point.
- 12:01He's obviously the second most talented driver on the grid.
- 12:04I mean I wouldn't say obviously but debatably the second most talented driver on the grid and he's far past prayers at this point.
- 12:11And also I mean Ferrari next year even with Hamilton they need to either match Red Bull's car or have a better car.
- 12:19Because with those two lineups going against each other if Carlos is at Red Bull.
- 12:23If they have an equal car that's still a heck of a race that whole season's I mean nuts.
- 12:27Because those are four obvious probably four of the best drivers out there right now.
- 12:32And if they're both competing with an equal car that's going to be fun.
- 12:35But I mean even if Red Bull is an equal car it's tough to say because I hate Red Bull and I hate Verstappen.
- 12:42But I would root for Carlos and I think you know it might be still in Red Bull's hands there to lose.
- 12:46I would root for Carlos too but I think that the curse of that second seat is going to get him.
- 12:51I think Max is still going to outperform him in the same car.
- 12:53The team is going to prioritize Max because he obviously can win it.
- 12:57I think it's the best car to be in obviously.
- 12:59If Carlos gets off of the spot he's going to take it and that's the best decision for him.
- 13:04But when he gets in that spot he's still getting second.
- 13:07I think I don't entirely agree with that because I think if Carlos actually goes there.
- 13:11And he starts popping off the first five races and is outperforming Max.
- 13:15At the end of the day Red Bull cares about championships.
- 13:17And they're going to want to go with that.
- 13:19Helmut cares about like all he cares about is who's going to give us delivers the best week in a week out.
- 13:24So I think that kind of comes down to if Carlos can just show out in a Red Bull and kind of exceed everybody's expectations.
- 13:30Red Bull is going to be kind of hands tied to go with him.
- 13:33And Max is just going to have to suck it up.
- 13:35I don't think they'd risk anything like that just to get Max another driver's championship.
- 13:40I completely agree.
- 13:42And even if Red Bull were to give Max whatever preferential treatment.
- 13:48That second Red Bull seat is still better than any first Red Bull seat out there.
- 13:52If the car is not even like you know the car is still.
- 13:54No assuming that doesn't change.
- 13:56That could very well change right.
- 13:58But you also have to expect all these upgrades these other teams are bringing.
- 14:01So is Red Bull.
- 14:02That doesn't get talked about.
- 14:04But they're bringing upgrades too.
- 14:06They're not just putting all the focus on next year in 2026.
- 14:09Also with I mean with the Red Bull car.
- 14:11It is clear as day that Perez is not the driver you want if it's a close race.
- 14:17If it's a close race and you get points.
- 14:19Like I know we talked about early on with the Red Bull and Ferrari fight early on with Science and Verstappen and how that would have ended up.
- 14:27But I mean if we're talking last year on this track with Red Bull.
- 14:32Even Treco is fighting for first place last year.
- 14:38And he's not even close to that.
- 14:39He wasn't even moving up.
- 14:40He was in fifth.
- 14:41He wasn't even fighting for that spot.
- 14:43And I don't know.
- 14:44Like I think you know I think it's a lot closer race than we think.
- 14:47And I think with you know more consistent finishes from like Carlos and Charles.
- 14:52It's gonna be hard for Red Bull to keep that one spot.
- 14:54Especially with Treco not performing.
- 14:56No I think you're hitting that right on the head.
- 14:58I think it is a lot closer than we think.
- 15:00And I think this past weekend just proved that with Treco like you said finishing fifth.
- 15:03He was nowhere near the McLarens at the end of the race.
- 15:05And like so reeling back in you know obviously Carlos with the driver of the day.
- 15:10Carlos goes P1.
- 15:11Science P2.
- 15:14Let's talk about the team we haven't really talked about too much yet.
- 15:18Our boy Lewis Hamilton with the engine failure on lap 17.
- 15:23Potentially caused by rapid loss of oil pressure.
- 15:28Followed by a shutdown of the engine to protect it.
- 15:31That's from F1.com.
- 15:33So they gotta correct that obviously.
- 15:36And then obviously George at the end pushing maybe to outside of his skill level.
- 15:43I wanna touch on that like the George aspect of it.
- 15:47So there's I don't know if this was just not as broadcasted with how much hate George is kind of getting.
- 15:53Or Alonzo was getting shall I say in the incident.
- 15:56Because if you listen to the radio message before that Alonzo happened.
- 16:00Alonzo's car was breaking down.
- 16:02He didn't come off that like the reason he was slow there is because his car was malfunctioning.
- 16:06That doesn't get talked about but there was direct radio message of him communicating with his engineer saying his car is like basically failing.
- 16:12And then like George being like aggressive.
- 16:14George has to. He has a chance of still catching Fernando at that point.
- 16:17He's gonna push until he absolutely can.
- 16:19It's so close where he doesn't get that radio message that Fernando lost.4.
- 16:23Four tenths of a second when you're coming into that quarter.
- 16:25And you have to take that direct line.
- 16:27It's huge.
- 16:29So like it's I don't get like George is being looked at like why are you being so aggressive.
- 16:33And Alonzo's like what the heck.
- 16:35It's like what's he supposed to do if the car is simply failing.
- 16:39To jump on first with Lewis I think with Lewis that's tough.
- 16:43He's not comfortable in the car so it kind of just sucks.
- 16:45Even when he's out of the race he can't even race.
- 16:47You know at least he can go you know hang out a little bit relax wait for the next race.
- 16:52He wouldn't hung out with Max.
- 16:53Yeah but like also like with Russell here it is also kind of you know.
- 16:58It's like this is also we're talking about Carlos going to Red Bull and all that.
- 17:03And with Alonzo I mean he is so fast in any car he's in.
- 17:07He is just so impressive holding back even Russell and the Mercedes.
- 17:11Mercedes is a faster car right now.
- 17:13I would agree with that.
- 17:15So like to have him.
- 17:16It's not great but I would agree with that.
- 17:17It's faster than Alonzo's driving.
- 17:19Alonzo's just so good.
- 17:20So that's interesting there but that just sucks because I mean Mercedes needs those points.
- 17:24And now it's like now we're looking at two people fighting for first.
- 17:28And it's not even kind of close.
- 17:30And who knows I mean Mercedes is fighting for fourth fifth at this point.
- 17:33Mercedes was left without points that race now because of that.
- 17:37That's huge.
- 17:38That is huge.
- 17:39Especially with McLaren grabbing a 3-4.
- 17:41No doubt.
- 17:42No doubt.
- 17:43So yeah I mean obviously just sucks.
- 17:46What do you got Joe?
- 17:47Oh yeah I just tough tough race for Mercedes.
- 17:50I just want to also touch on the George Alonzo incident as well.
- 17:54I did hear the radio messages of Alonzo saying that he was having issues.
- 17:58I heard them right after the crash happened.
- 18:00But then after the race he went to the stewards and said that he changed his driving style in that lap as well.
- 18:05So his story is kind of all over the place for me a little bit.
- 18:08So he might have caused the car to have it.
- 18:10So lap over lap and the stewards pointed all this out in the data from the car.
- 18:15So I didn't see that.
- 18:16Yeah they see him doing a specific break and I think this is I mean I feel like were you seeing a lot of Alonzo hate?
- 18:23Because I was seeing so much George hate over the weekend.
- 18:26It was more like like George hate for him just being like overly aggressive.
- 18:29Yeah I so my take and what I saw they showed him the stats from the race.
- 18:36Lap over lap he's breaking at this point.
- 18:38He's shifting at this point.
- 18:40He has this much gas going into it.
- 18:41And then in that one lap he kind of lets go a little bit.
- 18:45Breaks a little earlier than he usually does.
- 18:47He comes out and saying yeah I was trying a different line or is trying a different technique there.
- 18:51Obviously George has been around him for a while.
- 18:53He's expecting the same thing.
- 18:54You saw that gap close incredibly quickly.
- 18:57He loses that that downforce and he loses the car.
- 19:00I think because they have those stats they're able to point out what happened.
- 19:05Sure give Alonzo the penalty.
- 19:0620 seconds is pretty harsh though.
- 19:09Oh super harsh.
- 19:10I don't think it was should have been a 20 second penalty and I'll give that to Alonzo.
- 19:14But I understand something needing to be given out.
- 19:18I mean a 10 second though because in the grand scheme of things like nobody was really in a position to advance a spot from like Ford to really matter.
- 19:25Because it's on what two laps or on the final lap.
- 19:28It's second to final.
- 19:31Yeah it was the second to final lap because the lap technically ended the race ended on a virtual safety car.
- 19:36But it was like nobody was really in a position to do anything.
- 19:42And even if Alonzo was taken out so that's news to me.
- 19:45I didn't understand.
- 19:46I didn't know that.
- 19:47So he might have even caused the car to have the malfunctions or whatever just from putting it.
- 19:51I don't know nonetheless but 10 second would be more than applicable there.
- 19:55Like yeah you ruined George's race.
- 19:57Like you took him out of points.
- 19:59I just watching it was kind of scary to see Russell do that.
- 20:03No Russell like wrecked and was on the side.
- 20:06I was like they're not showing him he's okay.
- 20:08He was pretty quick on saying he's okay but.
- 20:10He was crying for a red flag.
- 20:11I shouldn't say crying.
- 20:12That's the bad way to look at it because I mean he's in a position in the middle of the track.
- 20:15To be fair he is on the spot.
- 20:16Somebody is coming in at 150 miles per hour.
- 20:18Instantly kills him.
- 20:19But he was just like he really wanted a red flag.
- 20:21Yeah it was interesting.
- 20:22I almost kind of wonder why.
- 20:24I mean I know why they didn't bring the red flag.
- 20:26But they probably should have given a red flag right.
- 20:29Yeah.
- 20:30He had a car upside down in the middle of the track after a high speed corner.
- 20:33That's a little weird.
- 20:34It is I mean definitely a safety issue.
- 20:37But we do have to move along really quick.
- 20:40You McLaren fans real quick give us a quick real quick recap on their race this weekend.
- 20:46How impressed are you with McLaren's performance this weekend.
- 20:49Joe.
- 20:50I mean they maintained where they needed to maintain.
- 20:53I think if I remember correctly they still lost.
- 20:58Who was at the who started the race second or second third.
- 21:03It was it was Verstappen, Sainz, Lando.
- 21:08I'm pretty sure it was Leclerc.
- 21:09Leclerc.
- 21:10I'll find it here.
- 21:11It definitely wasn't Sergio.
- 21:12Either way.
- 21:13Momentarily I got you.
- 21:14Ending third and fourth I think because I do remember one of the McLaren's at least one of them was fighting Ferrari for a little bit.
- 21:20And that was probably Leclerc.
- 21:22No it was Lando you're right.
- 21:23Because it was Sergio but he got the penalty.
- 21:25That's right.
- 21:26Yeah.
- 21:27So we see yeah.
- 21:29So we see I mean two Ferraris in that.
- 21:31I mean I love seeing Lando on a podium.
- 21:32Man I wish he got a win.
- 21:34I think he's probably competing for the most podiums without a win at this point.
- 21:37But consistent consistent drive from both of them.
- 21:40Really awesome to see Oscar fourth in his home race.
- 21:44I was kind of hoping they may throw a team order at him to let him get the third.
- 21:47That's not the way to do it.
- 21:48No definitely not.
- 21:49That's not the way to do it.
- 21:50I agree.
- 21:51And I don't think he wants that either.
- 21:52Oh yeah.
- 21:53Hundred percent.
- 21:54It was it was great though.
- 21:55I love seeing McLaren so high up there.
- 21:56Yeah I really wish Oscar would have like passed him and got got the podium for himself.
- 22:01But like how encouraging for McLaren.
- 22:04Yeah.
- 22:05How encouraging.
- 22:06So even if Verstappen doesn't you know whatever doesn't happen like there's still four or five.
- 22:09You know they still an incredible race for him and that car looks good.
- 22:14Light years ahead of the Mercedes at this point.
- 22:16Far ahead of Aston at this point.
- 22:18Like I mean if they make some major upgrades they might be able to close that gap a little bit between that Ferrari and Red Bull.
- 22:26But I mean in my opinion it's far and away the third fastest car on the track right now.
- 22:30Yeah and I think they can close the gap on Ferrari quicker than we think too.
- 22:35McLaren I think they'll be battling Ferrari a lot quicker.
- 22:37That's the thing though like I think that Ferrari is closing that gap on Red Bull so much right now.
- 22:42They are like you're really kind of catching them both.
- 22:44But that's that's like you said like to like Red Bull's got upgrades coming too.
- 22:48At the end of the day whoever has Adrian Newey in their headquarters is going to bring the best upgrades throughout the year.
- 22:56Right.
- 22:57And then moving right along into actually Aston.
- 23:00You know we kind of touched on Alonso a little bit.
- 23:03We should talk some Lance Searle probably.
- 23:06Obviously Lance finished after the penalties and whatnot.
- 23:09Finished what P6 for Lance and then Alonso finishing P8 after that incident.
- 23:16But what do we think about Aston's performance this weekend or I mean the other weekend.
- 23:23You know for as much as we dog stroll we got to give credit where credit's due.
- 23:27Finished P6 now it would have been P7 if Alonso didn't have the penalty.
- 23:31But like good race for Aston.
- 23:34That's what they kind of have to expect at this point.
- 23:36Anywhere from that 6 to 8 spot is kind of where that car is with the two Mercs not getting any points.
- 23:42You know if Lewis and Georgia in this race do they finish where they're at.
- 23:45Probably not.
- 23:46But who knows because Alonso was in front of Russell.
- 23:50But good race for Aston. Good weekend.
- 23:52Yeah the reality of it is whenever Lance is getting points for that team it's a win for that team.
- 23:57Even if it's 9th or 10th.
- 23:58So you have to take that as a big win for Lance.
- 24:00It was a good race from him and Alonso obviously doing what he does.
- 24:03Yeah got to give credit to Aston just as a whole.
- 24:06Definitely making strides.
- 24:08I think they're good for where they are right now.
- 24:11Looking at the times they're still 40 seconds away from Perez at the end of that race.
- 24:16No I mean everybody I feel like is still 40 minutes or 40 seconds away from 40 minutes.
- 24:22Wow.
- 24:23Yeah 40 seconds away from Perez in 5th place though.
- 24:26So they still got to work on something.
- 24:28That's the thing though.
- 24:29And Perez didn't even run a good race.
- 24:31He made it 1 place.
- 24:32Exactly and that's the thing those top three teams.
- 24:34Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari at this point they're just so light years ahead of the rest of the pack.
- 24:39But I would think that Aston should be competing with Mercedes though.
- 24:42Which they did this race for a minute.
- 24:44But I would imagine even for the rest of the season that should be I don't know if their goal or benchmark or whatever you want to call it.
- 24:52But like they should be trying to compete with Mercedes right now I would think.
- 24:56They're beating them right now.
- 24:58Yeah Mercedes vs Aston I think is going to be the fight for four.
- 25:03Sure, sure.
- 25:04Yeah for sure.
- 25:06Let's just move right into the Williams situation with Albion crashing in FP1 and their decision to put Albion in the car.
- 25:17It's a lot cooler of like a situation to happen if Albion gets points.
- 25:22I think it's kind of just like whatever at this point.
- 25:24Cool obviously you're going to go with your better driver and all that.
- 25:26It's a lot cooler of a story to kind of dive into if he got points.
- 25:30It's kind of just whatever you know.
- 25:32No, no for sure I totally agree with you.
- 25:35But I think there's still something to be said that obviously they don't.
- 25:38I mean yeah he's your better driver but I mean it's kind of crappy for Sargent who didn't crash in FP1.
- 25:45They saved millions of dollars by not putting him in the car this weekend okay.
- 25:49Ain't that true but I mean even on that note there like how boring of a race objectively versus last year right.
- 25:57What do you guys think that was?
- 25:58Do you think because of what happened last year they were a little bit more reserved this year?
- 26:02100%.
- 26:03Because even at the start of the race like the one recent we didn't have any action in the turn one.
- 26:07100% and you're exactly and like my wife actually watched it with me so I was like oh get ready.
- 26:14Get ready.
- 26:15I was getting charged up and then like you know lights go out I'm like oh my god.
- 26:19Carnage.
- 26:20And then it's just carnage.
- 26:21And then there was no carnage.
- 26:25And I was like oh never mind you can go back to scrolling or whatever you're doing you know whatever.
- 26:30But like no I totally agree with you.
- 26:33I think they did feel like the drivers were more reserved.
- 26:36I mean towards the end everybody was getting a little more antsy but it did feel a little bit different.
- 26:42I would imagine they all still had PTSD from last year.
- 26:46I don't know.
- 26:47Do you think it was maybe a little bit of team direction too?
- 26:50Like hey there was millions upon millions of dollars worth of damage last year.
- 26:55Let's not have that happen again.
- 26:57I think it's more so kind of just I don't think it's I really don't think it's that I think it's more so around like a lot of these drivers are like okay.
- 27:04If I can play it safe in this first turn somebody else is going to be an idiot and I'm going to be free to get free placement right.
- 27:09So a lot of these teams know where they're kind of sitting in the standings.
- 27:12So I think a lot of these drivers expect especially the experienced drivers are like I'm not going to get crazy into this turn because there's going to be a wreck.
- 27:20This racer might be a couple.
- 27:21So I'm just going to play it safe especially if you're like Haas.
- 27:24Haas race an amazing race just playing it smart and you know hold out with some good points and that's huge for them.
- 27:31But that's also it's smart driving right.
- 27:33They knew people were going to wreck.
- 27:34They knew they're going to get moved up.
- 27:35Just keep racing your race.
- 27:36This is a race where you can be in 13th 12th and still end up in points just from racing your race and being you know consistent and not getting sucked into the rubbish like straight up.
- 27:48Yeah I completely agree.
- 27:50Maybe they were playing a little reserved.
- 27:51Maybe it's because De Vries wasn't on the grid anymore.
- 27:53There's a lot of things we can probably account it to.
- 27:55I will say Haas playing it safe I think for most of that race Magnuson coming out fighting Alba near the end of that race for the last point position.
- 28:05Making Williams weekend so bad.
- 28:08Going back to Logan really quick.
- 28:10I don't even know what to say.
- 28:13It just it was the I hate to say it was a perfect start to a weekend but it was only the perfect start because I think we love stuff happening on a race weekend right.
- 28:22I mean probably but with how much longer does he have a contract with Williams.
- 28:28I think they're both up at the end of this year.
- 28:30Are they?
- 28:31Half the griffins Logan there's 13 drivers that don't have a seat next year.
- 28:35It's the most freaking movement we've ever seen but like do you think Logan's probably out.
- 28:40No Logan's out.
- 28:41Olly Bearman has that seat lock in hand.
- 28:43For Williams specifically?
- 28:45No I'm sorry that's Haas bro I'm tweaking.
- 28:47Logan's native to Miami I believe right that's his home race.
- 28:50No Texas.
- 28:51Texas wants his home race.
- 28:52He'll be watching that one from the stands next season.
- 28:57No I think he actually is from Florida.
- 28:58I think you're right.
- 28:59I think I was.
- 29:00Yeah yeah yeah.
- 29:01Okay so say the line again he'll be watching Miami.
- 29:03He'll be watching Miami enjoying the beach enjoying the sun and watching it from the
- 29:06stands next year.
- 29:07Dang.
- 29:08Rough.
- 29:09Dang that's rough.
- 29:10Yeah but yeah I mean in terms of like the al-Ban it's like what a tough like decision
- 29:16you have to be put in as like James Vowles right.
- 29:19The principal for Williams.
- 29:21That's such a tough call and you made the right call.
- 29:23You have to put in Al-Ban.
- 29:25You have to.
- 29:26Is it really a tough call for him though?
- 29:28With how Sargent's performed all last year and this year.
- 29:31No I'm not saying it's a tough call.
- 29:33It's a tough position to be in to have to tell your driver you're not racing this weekend
- 29:37and we're giving your car to the other driver.
- 29:39Like that's not a conversation anybody wants to have right.
- 29:42I think it's tougher if it's not Sargent in that seat.
- 29:45It's irrelevant like the level of hardness of how hard it is doesn't really matter.
- 29:50It's still not an like it's a conversation you never want to have right.
- 29:54Yeah yeah yeah I guess if you want to go back a year and a half they wish they never put
- 29:57that guy in the freaking car.
- 29:59Oh my gosh.
- 30:00I think this is a loose loose conversation.
- 30:02The hate for the lone American.
- 30:03Yeah I think Cole's new nickname on the show should just be like the hater or whatever.
- 30:08Did he like DM your friend or something bro?
- 30:10What's going on?
- 30:11Geez.
- 30:12Well let's just let's just keep it rolling.
- 30:14Let's just keep it rolling.
- 30:16Keep it rolling.
- 30:18Well let's obviously talk about the V-Carbs.
- 30:22Yuki in points and Ricardo is once again kind of just meh.
- 30:31You know at least it was better this week.
- 30:33I had his home course.
- 30:35Was it?
- 30:37Better-ish yeah than prior weeks.
- 30:41He hasn't got points yet right?
- 30:43No he finished 17th this week bro.
- 30:45You had three cars that had a DNF.
- 30:46What do you mean he finished 17th?
- 30:48What are you talking about?
- 30:49I'm tweaking I'm looking at the driver's standings.
- 30:51Okay because I was stripping I was like wow I've been talking the last little bit off this thing in front of me and now I'm wrong.
- 30:57Oh my god.
- 30:58My apologies.
- 30:59So no finished 12th I mean that's better than what he's been doing but still not points for a guy who's gunning for that second Red Bull seat.
- 31:08You know I'm not trying to take anything away from Yuki but like I know we've kind of talked about it every episode so far but is Ricardo done?
- 31:17Like is this is this it for him?
- 31:19Because I don't right now he doesn't make a good argument for that that Red Bull seat at all.
- 31:24He sure doesn't.
- 31:25I mean the car.
- 31:26Neither does Yuki to be fair but.
- 31:28Yuki took advantage of the opportunity this week and got a P7.
- 31:31You know that's I think P7 is is probably V-Carb ceiling this year.
- 31:36Right that's probably where they should be if they are succeeding.
- 31:39They're not they would need another Australia last year where eight cars are out of the field for them to finish anywhere in the top five or anywhere near it.
- 31:45You know what I mean?
- 31:46So it's I it's the true test is Yuki versus Danny Rick right?
- 31:53Yuki is highly outperforming him right now.
- 31:55Oh 100 percent.
- 31:56I think in reality neither of these two are in contention for that Red Bull spot anymore.
- 32:01No they're just hoping to get a seat next year.
- 32:03Not at this point.
- 32:04Yeah they which they might they might maybe Williams you know.
- 32:07Williams might have a couple.
- 32:08I mean even with V-Carb.
- 32:09Or stay or stay.
- 32:10Yeah true true.
- 32:13Joe you got anything on the V-Carbs or I'm curious.
- 32:16I prefer not to comment.
- 32:18I mean I want Danny Rick to be doing so much better than he is man.
- 32:21It's I mean if you would ask last year it's unacceptable to be behind Haas and Williams right.
- 32:28That's kind of not the situation this year.
- 32:30They're obviously doing a little bit better but Yuki's above him.
- 32:34Danny isn't.
- 32:36I am curious to see if V-Carb would keep both of them on or if they would go with some fresh meat.
- 32:42Yeah no for sure.
- 32:44I guess we'll find out but it's a good chance they could stay.
- 32:48Haas let's just move on along to Haas.
- 32:50We've already talked about them a little bit.
- 32:52Nine and ten getting in points again.
- 32:54Another good run from K-Meg and I mean Hulkenberg too.
- 32:58I mean another great run from Haas.
- 33:00How about Hulk?
- 33:01Back to back races with points.
- 33:04I mean they're making an argument to come back to Haas next year if not a better seat at least.
- 33:09Haas has to give it to Olly Behrmann.
- 33:11That guy needs a chance.
- 33:13You think he's just a shoe-in for Haas?
- 33:15I do.
- 33:16It's nowhere else?
- 33:17No I mean where's he?
- 33:18No.
- 33:19Well he's a Ferrari so he's a Ferrari reserve driver.
- 33:21Oh that's right.
- 33:22And doesn't Haas use Ferrari engines?
- 33:24Well Haas is like a like you know how like V-Carb to Red Bull.
- 33:28It's not quite the same but it's almost the same as Haas to Mercedes.
- 33:34Sorry.
- 33:35Ferrari.
- 33:36But like last year it was kind of like I feel like they more so favored Magnussen last year
- 33:40especially the whole season.
- 33:41Right?
- 33:42So this year I mean Hulkenberg is the one showing out.
- 33:44Obviously Magnussen helped last week but as you should when he's the one out in front.
- 33:48Sorry the previous race not last race with Magnussen helping out and then Hulkenberg having this again this most recent week.
- 33:55It's interesting who do you think gets a second seat now?
- 33:59Because they're both racing outstanding but I mean Hulkenberg has the edge.
- 34:02Isn't Hulkenberg a little bit older?
- 34:04I think they're very close.
- 34:06Ah god yeah.
- 34:07Now that you say that they got to be close.
- 34:08I would think you got to give the one seat to Hulkenberg.
- 34:11Well I mean is there really a true one seat with Haas?
- 34:14Probably not.
- 34:15Whoever's running faster that day will be in front for Haas I would imagine.
- 34:20Does it even make sense for Haas?
- 34:22I know I think in the first episode here we shot together we talked about how Haas should just restart.
- 34:27Get fresh drivers young drivers.
- 34:29Does it make sense?
- 34:30I mean these guys are kind of showing out this year.
- 34:32They're getting more points than they have in the previous years.
- 34:34Especially with the amount of top cars that have been finishing in these last couple races.
- 34:40Does it make sense for Haas to start fresh or try to keep some of that seniority?
- 34:44I think it'll be a mix.
- 34:46I think Tyler's right.
- 34:47I think it'll be Ollie but I think it could be either one battling it out for that second spot.
- 34:54Yeah and so Hulkenberg's 36 K-Max 31 so it's five years.
- 34:59I didn't think it was that much.
- 35:00I thought they were within like one or two years right?
- 35:03So I mean in my opinion it would make sense to keep a Magnets in.
- 35:07The two rookies, the two young drivers system, it simply doesn't work.
- 35:11Haas learned that the hard way with Mick Schumacher and the Russian cat Mazda Spin.
- 35:18Yeah with Mazda Spin.
- 35:19So the two rookie system I don't think is going to really work.
- 35:23Especially for a team that they need all of the finishing in the drivers standings as they can to get that money.
- 35:30Because they're hanging on to threads at this point.
- 35:33They have been right?
- 35:34So I think like pairing a Ollie Baerman with a K-Meg, you know K-Meg being 31, five years younger than Hulkenberg.
- 35:39I think that would make a lot of sense right?
- 35:41If they end up in last place again though, they're clear in house.
- 35:45I think both drivers are gone.
- 35:47I don't think they're going to be in last place though.
- 35:49I don't think so either.
- 35:50With how they look even against you know with Saber, Alpine and Williams.
- 35:55With how poor they're looking right now and even the V-Car with the inconsistencies.
- 35:59Like Yuki with the six point last week is their six points this year.
- 36:03So yeah, they're three points up.
- 36:05But you know the total of that three points is so much.
- 36:09It means so much more at the bottom than it does in those middle packs there.
- 36:13Because you don't have the chance to get a P2 to get that huge difference right?
- 36:17Those one to two points are going to be the difference between you know six, seven, eight this year in the standings.
- 36:22And then that just rolls us right into Alpine.
- 36:25They finally ran laps under championship points.
- 36:29And that's it.
- 36:31So they're yeah, they're just not good.
- 36:34Straight rubbish for Alpine again.
- 36:36We can't really expect anything from them pretty much the rest of the season.
- 36:40But we'll just keep an eye on their quote upgrades and see what happens.
- 36:45And on obviously Saber, Steak, whatever we're calling them.
- 36:50You know their pit troubles just continue.
- 36:52The long pits, they have an issue right now with like cross threading their wheel nuts.
- 36:59And it's just been a huge problem all season.
- 37:01I actually do have a funny call out.
- 37:03I was watching that race and seeing them again like I think two 30 second pit stops.
- 37:07And then the one pit stop that they do get in normal pit stop range.
- 37:11I just see a little nut rolling down pit lane away from the car after it.
- 37:15So something's going on there.
- 37:16They made a bad par.
- 37:17They just need to get that fixed and hopefully start making points.
- 37:21Yeah, no doubt.
- 37:22And with that, I mean that kind of wraps up Australia.
- 37:25We'll just head right into the news.
- 37:27Honestly.
- 37:32So right off the bat, McLaren, technical director, car concept and performance, David Sanchez,
- 37:38only a couple months into his new position has vacated.
- 37:42That new position is kind of how it's been put in the news.
- 37:46So it's quote mutual.
- 37:48But as Tyler said before we started recording, there is nothing mutual in F1.
- 37:53You, McLaren fanboys.
- 37:55What's up with that?
- 37:57So I mean, it was like a big winter hire.
- 38:00You know, I looked into this a little bit.
- 38:02It was actually agreed upon that he would come in and actually January or February of 2023.
- 38:06And that was delayed.
- 38:08So there was already some kind of like bad blood or misunderstanding between him and Zach Brown.
- 38:12It the relationship wasn't able to be mended in the meantime since he did come here.
- 38:17It was this year.
- 38:19He's only been there a couple of months.
- 38:21And it came to a point where they disagreed that whenever their future outlook would just wasn't on the same path of what they wanted to do to develop the car and kind of take that team.
- 38:30So again, they mutually parted ways.
- 38:32But at the end of the day, in the F1 who there's no such thing as a mutual parting ways, right?
- 38:37He got more than likely let go.
- 38:40But if it was in the because they were going in different directions, there was that that disagreement there.
- 38:45It more of a mutual than we might think, you know, than it then it then it's led to be.
- 38:50But at the end of the day, if you're not going to get on the bandwagon of the higher ups and the company you're working for, it's not mutual for you to let go be let go because you're not getting on board.
- 39:00Well, and with that, like David Sanchez, this is also on F1.com said, like, while the role we envisioned had agreed to was not aligned with the reality of the position I found.
- 39:11And then, you know, we went on to say other stuff, but like that's pretty much what you were just saying.
- 39:15Like, maybe what they had agreed upon originally wasn't actually what was going on.
- 39:21And so therefore they mutually left.
- 39:23But maybe it is more of a actually like he quit rather than they let him go.
- 39:28Do you think that's any tie into like Zach Brown?
- 39:32I don't know. Like they painted him kind of bad in the drive to survive.
- 39:36Painted who bad?
- 39:37Zach.
- 39:38OK.
- 39:39I don't think he looked that good, kind of like they kind of in the first couple of seasons, maybe.
- 39:43But he's definitely like become more of the good guy recently.
- 39:46But yeah, I get that.
- 39:47And I think he's still kind of, you know, a douche behind the scenes, specifically like I'm talking about the golf when he was golfing,
- 39:54Orlando trying to make sure that he stayed with McLaren in the most recent drive to survive.
- 39:58He just looked weird.
- 39:59Like he just played it weird.
- 40:00Like the whole situation was kind of eerie and weird around Zach.
- 40:04And I liked him. I liked him.
- 40:05I kind of liked him when he first came on.
- 40:06I think he kind of turned the whole program around. But I think now it's just I don't know.
- 40:11I just get like a weird vibe from him.
- 40:12Do you think he's like getting a little bit of an ego, a little bit more with himself and like what he's been able to do?
- 40:17Like there's no doubt.
- 40:19Like, I agree with you.
- 40:20I kind of liked him at the beginning and now it's kind of evolved into something else where now I'm kind of like getting this weird vibe.
- 40:26But I don't know.
- 40:29Yeah, I don't.
- 40:30I don't know if it's necessarily ego.
- 40:31But I mean, you can kind of argue that.
- 40:33But also you can have ego.
- 40:35Last year, they were kind of trash.
- 40:37He kind of helped turn that car around, obviously, and made sure that everybody is pushing in the right direction to make one of the craziest jumps and F1 in a while.
- 40:45Right.
- 40:46How fast that car got, which is awesome.
- 40:48But I don't know.
- 40:49Yeah, I just get a weird vibe from him.
- 40:51Yeah.
- 40:52I mean, what they showed, I don't think that they put him in the best light in that golfing thing.
- 40:58You know, I'd love to see what all of the conversation was that happened behind that.
- 41:02You know, like there's obviously been prior discussion.
- 41:04And at the end, I think what drive to survive was like doing was saying like, yeah, well, they're always actively trying to make sure the drivers don't go.
- 41:10And it's always a business.
- 41:11They were kind of trying to paint it in that light.
- 41:13And it did.
- 41:14I agree.
- 41:15It put him made him look like it just looks super uncomfortable.
- 41:18It looks super uncomfortable.
- 41:20And they didn't paint him in the best light.
- 41:22I think, too, though, like he almost isn't one for the cameras.
- 41:25Like once he gets behind the cameras, he's kind of weird.
- 41:27It's kind of I would agree with that.
- 41:29I would agree with that.
- 41:30Well, I'm sorry. Yeah, I was just going to say like and that's the thing, like no matter what, as hopefully our listeners find out soon, cameras don't always, you know, paint you in the best like picture.
- 41:42You know what I mean?
- 41:43Like you got to know the vibe of the conversation, too.
- 41:46You know what I mean?
- 41:47Like that situation or whatever they're talking about or have at least a little bit more context.
- 41:52They're going to select and pick and choose what they put in there.
- 41:55You know what I mean?
- 41:56So they might know that he looks a little awkward or says something goofy or whatever and looks uncomfortable.
- 42:02Well, it's probably because he is and they chose to use that scene.
- 42:05But I totally give what you're saying.
- 42:07I like that point.
- 42:08But moving right along with our news, I guess, if you call it news, Alpines are going to bring some upgrades in Japan, I guess, kind of like the first step of weight reduction, you know, like a new front wing.
- 42:22Sounds like some of these upgrades, though, could maybe just be more for fun or trial, Joe.
- 42:29Like, weren't you just looking up something earlier today?
- 42:33And they're not going to say it outright.
- 42:35But from what I was reading, it very much sounded like they're kind of just throwing things at the wall right now and hoping that they stick.
- 42:41I don't think we're going to see any huge difference in performance from Japan.
- 42:46I still think they're going to be fighting for definitely trying to fight for points, but probably falling short.
- 42:52Yeah, it's for them to actually go into the weight reduction.
- 42:55It's like finally, right.
- 42:58It took you this long to put an emphasis on it.
- 43:00You know, you're three races in and it's.
- 43:03At the end of the day, they're light years away from points, so they have to make these upgrades.
- 43:09You have to use the season of the trial because the the wind tunnel, the sim hours, you can put as much hours in the sim as you want.
- 43:15But at the end of the day, until you get that car on track is when you get the full feel.
- 43:18So I think you're going to see a lot of like the the free practices and them kind of trial in the car and then the race they might at the end of the day.
- 43:27They have to try something right.
- 43:29What they're doing is not working. It's not going to work.
- 43:31Use the race as the trial then do what you have to do to get that car in.
- 43:35At least like like try to get six points on the year at this point, you know.
- 43:39No doubt. And like you said, you're not going to get better numbers or, you know, from what you're looking at than having the car on a real track with a real driver behind it.
- 43:49So in the same kind of regard, though, so in your guys's opinion, how much do you just.
- 43:55Take this year as an L and you put the effort into next year and ensuring that this can't happen again.
- 44:00They've been doing that. They're already doing that. I would guarantee you they're already doing that.
- 44:04They're just trying to do these little upgrades, kind of like what Joe was saying, just throwing something out there, seeing if it sticks and maybe use those similar ideas into their development next year.
- 44:14But with that regard, though, they don't have any drivers under contract next year.
- 44:17You have to put a car that wants to bring somebody in, at least they got to be working on it.
- 44:22If you're if you're the world class, you know, racing championship of the world, like, I mean, you got to be working on that already.
- 44:30You know, but I also think they still I mean, granted, they want to throw stuff at next year, but they also still want don't want to finish dead last this year.
- 44:37You want to know something this year. They're throwing stuff at the wall.
- 44:39But at the end of the day, they think it's going to work and that's why they're doing it.
- 44:42So I think that they still want to try to get up to that seventh spot maybe this year and try to still secure some good points and and not be the laughing stock at nine.
- 44:53Yeah, that's exactly it. I think they're trying to avoid being the laughing stock, no doubt.
- 44:57Tyler, you actually had some some hot news for us to wrap up.
- 45:01Yeah, I don't know if I'd call it necessarily hot news as much as just it's rumor season and the rumors are heating up and it's rumored and it's come out.
- 45:08Actually, I've seen it on a couple of different news outlets that Lawrence Stroll is prepared to just throw all of the money at Adrian Newey to lure him to Aston from Red Bull.
- 45:17Now, a lot of people would say, oh, it's a billionaire doing this, but they already took so much of Red Bull's team going into last year.
- 45:25So a lot of what Newey has put into place, like the developing pieces that he kind of has is almost it's not set in stone.
- 45:31Like, there's still obviously a lot of his team at Red Bull.
- 45:35But if Newey comes over and he's able to do that, do they does he bring a lot of those Red Bull team and those engineers with him?
- 45:41And what does that look like for Aston then? Because that would be wild.
- 45:45If they did that, does that paint a pretty good picture for Alonzo to stay?
- 45:51I mean, screw it. I'm already pretty dang quick in a car that's not quick compared to other teams.
- 45:57And now they're just going to make all these upgrades. I'll just stay.
- 46:01And how does that look for Red Bull, you know, with all that?
- 46:04At the end of the day, too, I mean, Stroll is here for one reason.
- 46:07Obviously, he's loaded. He doesn't really do this. It doesn't seem like he does this to try to make more money, right?
- 46:12He's here to try to win a championship. I think that's the first goal. So why not? I think just go for it.
- 46:17I think he should be throwing money at a lot of guys out there and just bringing them over to the team.
- 46:21And in that same regard, it sucks that like he has so much commitment to Lance because until Lance is out of that seat,
- 46:29that team will never be able to like compete for a team driver construct a constructor championship
- 46:36unless the car is in like Red Bull's pace right now and Alonzo or whoever takes it to the point where Verstappen can do last year.
- 46:43I just don't think that the team is going to be able to compete at a ridiculously high level with Stroll at that second driver.
- 46:49Who would you like to see in that seat? Hypothetically, real quick.
- 46:52So let's say that Nui goes there because that changes a lot of things under the assumption of Nui's there.
- 46:56I'd love to see Fernando be able to have a ridiculously good car underneath him because of what you said.
- 47:01He's been overperforming with the car that he's had the last two years.
- 47:05But I would love to see like a Cyan's with him, bro.
- 47:08You get the two Spaniards behind the wheels of the Astins with the car as good as a Red Bull.
- 47:12Holy crap, the elbows that would be pushed out by those two and be able to compete.
- 47:15That would be fun to watch. 100%. That would be fun to watch.
- 47:19Let's just wrap it up on that. That's it for our news. Let's just run right into our Japan preview.
- 47:30And obviously to start off our Japanese Grand Prix preview, Joe will have a kind of a recap of last year's race getting us ready for this year.
- 47:39Yep. Back at it with a recap for the upcoming race.
- 47:43I always like to start with some fun facts.
- 47:45Suzuka is the only figure eight track on the calendar.
- 47:48I guess it has that little that little bridge that goes over the track.
- 47:53And in the last five Suzuka GPs, which I think spans back to 2016,
- 47:58Max has been the only non Mercedes driver to win that race with Lewis, Botas and Nico Rosberg being the other ones to win it.
- 48:06Right. Last year, Japan starting grid, we saw Max, Oscar and Lando.
- 48:12So McLaren representation up in that front row. Love to see it.
- 48:15It was Oscar's first front row start as well. I'm really hoping for some strong representation this week as well.
- 48:21We saw McLaren pressuring Max at that start. He had to start defending against both of them right away.
- 48:26Of course, we get a safety car out end of lap one due to debris on the track.
- 48:30This is caused by Alfa Romeo, Alpine and Williams all kind of getting too close to each other and Paris starting fifth,
- 48:37also getting some damage by getting squeezed in between Alonso and Hamilton,
- 48:41needing to take immediate pit stop under the safety car for a new front wing.
- 48:46We saw Botas as the first DNF after Logan locks up into a corner and drives right into his rear,
- 48:51setting him into the air, landing on his under panel and then having to drive back to the pits to lick his wounds and retire the car.
- 48:58We saw the two Mercedes fighting the majority of the race, actually bumping into each other at a few points.
- 49:03We heard Russell on the radio kind of yell out, who do we want to fight here?
- 49:07Each other or the drivers obviously getting a little uncomfortable.
- 49:10On lap 48 of 53, we also saw team orders ask Russell and Hamilton to swap, leaving Russell open to attack from signs who takes that position.
- 49:19And Perez, lap 12, takes a corner sharp and drives into the back of Magnussen, giving both cars more damage than they already had.
- 49:27This brought out a virtual safety car to clear up some more debris.
- 49:30We saw Perez retiring the car after this, unable to serve his five second penalty from driving into Magnussen.
- 49:36Now, if I remember correctly, because he didn't serve this penalty at that race, he would have to serve it at the next one.
- 49:43So Red Bull decided that on lap 40, they would send him back out to serve the penalty and then retire the car right after that.
- 49:51This is the first time I've ever seen that happen.
- 49:54I'd love to hear what your guys' thoughts on that are, because I certainly have some thoughts.
- 49:58So is that because the car was retired, right?
- 50:02Because you would think they would just tack five seconds on to his end of race time, and that's where he would finish position wise.
- 50:08But because he didn't have an end of race time due to the DNF, is that why it would have gone to the next race?
- 50:12I'm thinking that this is a penalty that he had to serve in the race.
- 50:17And because he didn't serve it, it would be tacked on to the next one.
- 50:21So what's the difference of a penalty served in the race when Alonso last year in Jetta or Alonso this year with the 22nd?
- 50:28Where does that difference come into play, I guess, is where I'm confused.
- 50:31I'm thinking because they can't drop him, he's DNF'd technically, they can't drop his place.
- 50:36His penalty would mean nothing at that point, and I think a lot of penalties sometimes mean nothing anyway.
- 50:41But it was interesting. I think it was the first time I saw this combo of this penalty would be carried over and also a car coming out of retirement just to serve it.
- 50:50So it was retired and it came out of retirement to serve it and then re-retired?
- 50:56Yep, the car was in the garage on lap 12, 30 or so laps later.
- 51:01We see pairs coming out for a single lap just to pit, serve that penalty, go around the track one more time and then retire again.
- 51:07I've been watching F1 for like six years now and I didn't even know he could un-retire a car.
- 51:13But I mean, at the end of the day, it's a smart move by Red Bull and every other team would do that, I think, if they could get away with it.
- 51:18So, I mean, end of the day, I think every team is doing that.
- 51:21Should they get away with it though?
- 51:22Absolutely. I think if it's in the rules like that and the FBI keeps doing the stuff they're doing, let them do it.
- 51:29Well, I think what it comes down to is like when you retire in a car, right, let's put that in quotations, what does that truly mean?
- 51:36Is that just that you move your car into the garage and as history says, you're no longer going to race?
- 51:42Are you establishing to the stewards that you are no longer in this race?
- 51:45Does that matter in the grand scheme of things?
- 51:47Do the stewards need to know that?
- 51:49Or are you able to go in like in NASCAR, for example, you see it all the time, car gets like, you know, the whatever wreck, they come into the garage, they duct tape the living crap out of it.
- 51:58I know it's not duct tape and then they come out and they finish the last whatever 30, 40, 50, however long it takes to repair the car.
- 52:05Now, there's no benefit to the NASCAR driver in doing so.
- 52:07They're not going to be in points contention.
- 52:09So I would assume it's that same concept where NF1 the difference between you got 20 drivers versus 40, whatever it is, 45, 40, whatever it is.
- 52:19Right.
- 52:20So that points difference to get to 10 when you're 25 laps behind is simply not attainable where I don't know.
- 52:27Super smart on Red Bull side.
- 52:28I think you're right.
- 52:29Every other team would do it.
- 52:30Should I think they like should they allow it?
- 52:32Yeah.
- 52:33I mean, who's to say when a car is officially on like it lets the stewards come out and say that car is not safe to drive on the track again.
- 52:39Absolutely don't let them on.
- 52:40But the car safe.
- 52:41Why not?
- 52:42I want to kind of add to your point there, Tyler.
- 52:45If let's say 11 cars retired from all getting in wrecks or something like that, whoever's team gets out there and fixes their car and gets their guy out there.
- 52:53Why wouldn't they go out there and take the free point?
- 52:55I think it's the same line.
- 52:57So I think we can't argue that way because I think, you know, I mean, if you can get your car back out there to get the points, do it.
- 53:03So I think we had to look at it that way.
- 53:04It's a really, really, really good way to look at it.
- 53:07And like judging from what I just looked up, allegedly it is like it doesn't say you can't in the rules.
- 53:14It's just really rare.
- 53:15Yeah, really rare.
- 53:17I think the thing that I'm having the hardest part of it is that what in the rules and there has to be some sort of circumstances depending on the crash or the damage to the car.
- 53:26We saw that huge collision with with Joe either last year or the year before on Silverstone where he got turned over, flew into the into the wall or into barriers, ended up sideways.
- 53:38George got out of his car to check that, wanted to get back in his car and start racing.
- 53:42And the stewards said no.
- 53:43So I don't know.
- 53:44Maybe there are some rules that I'm not seeing that put both situations at a different level, but they throw in a new tire for George.
- 53:52He can race.
- 53:53Perez got like 30 laps in the garage to get his car fixed and then he was out again.
- 53:58He's not racing for points, but he is racing for the next race.
- 54:02Let me ask you this and I don't know the answer to this.
- 54:05Was George able to drive that car to the garage or did it get towed to the garage?
- 54:10It got it got towed to the garage because they didn't let him get back into the car.
- 54:14My second question would be did Perez last year go to the garage or did he get towed?
- 54:18He went to the garage himself.
- 54:19I think that right there is the difference. If you get like I think that right there is a difference because if you have to pull, if you have to get your tar code red flag.
- 54:26Red flag. Yeah.
- 54:27Now they might have had a red flag in the mag in the incident last year, but it wasn't been due to Perez.
- 54:30That's fair.
- 54:31Both cars were to get back to it. At that point, you're establishing there's a stop to the race.
- 54:34Yeah.
- 54:35And so I think that might be where the where it lies.
- 54:37If George was able to get back out of the and I think once you get out of the car on the track, you're more or less establishing that you are out of the race.
- 54:44Yep. I know it's I think that might have something to do with it.
- 54:47I don't know.
- 54:48You're totally right. Yeah.
- 54:49There's definitely different different circumstances to both situation.
- 54:54I'm sure you're totally right.
- 54:55I overlooked that the red flag in that, you know, George situation versus it's just he got it to the garage.
- 55:02No, those are all really good points.
- 55:04But again, kudos to George, though, for getting out of the car and going check in on John.
- 55:08Nothing else mattered.
- 55:10But his safe.
- 55:11I was gutted.
- 55:12Yeah.
- 55:13And I mean, along with all that, like, obviously all the cars do that.
- 55:16It's always like one of the weird things I think that a lot of people talk about is like the rules behind everything.
- 55:20Like we have these weird rules for this, you know, the weird rules, you know, obviously, a lot of us here are football fans.
- 55:25We have a ton of weird rules that we're all like, but unless they actually get brought up, nobody really thinks about them.
- 55:30So it's a good point you're bringing up, Joe.
- 55:32And it's I mean, it's kind of just like, yeah, the rule, the rules, the rule.
- 55:36If you know, Ferrari dealt with the same thing, they would do the same thing.
- 55:39I think it's kind of like, is it like sleazy?
- 55:42Absolutely.
- 55:43Yeah. But it's in the rules.
- 55:44Just because it's red bull.
- 55:48Maybe it rubs me the wrong way a little bit more.
- 55:50I think it also matters, too, because Japan was at the end of the year last year where Perez and Hamilton were in that battle for the second that P2.
- 55:59So that five seconds could have really mattered.
- 56:01Yeah, absolutely.
- 56:02Right. Well, wrapping up recap really quick.
- 56:06Landstroll third car to retire, followed by Logan and then Albon after that, making for a bad weekend for Williams.
- 56:12We saw the final Verstappen, Norris and then Piastri, a 19 second gap between first and second and then a 17 second gap between second and third.
- 56:20Max finished getting the points, enough points for Red Bull to get the constructors in that race.
- 56:26So that was declared right then and there.
- 56:28It was a rough weekend for Perez.
- 56:30Obviously, I think in my opinion, he just made some really dumb mistakes.
- 56:33He kept on. I was watching the recap.
- 56:34He kept on taking the same corner way too tight with other cars around him.
- 56:38And we had a really strong weekend for McLaren, both drivers proving to understand this track well, enhanced by a very good car for that time in the season.
- 56:45And then I know just because these three are in the rotation for podium, Ferrari, not much to note, but also a strong finish.
- 56:52We saw them fighting with McLaren on the pit stop strategy and then fighting Mercedes on the track, finishing fourth and sixth, Charles and Carlos respectively.
- 57:01So, I mean, we don't really have a ton of time, but is there is there anything we're looking for this weekend before we go into our podium predictions?
- 57:10I think it's the same thing as, you know, last race.
- 57:12I mean, everybody's watching that Ferrari Red Bull fight, see if they can actually bring it to him this race.
- 57:16That gap, the gap, seeing if it can get closer.
- 57:20On top of that, I think that is Mercedes going to show out and actually be able to battle McLaren.
- 57:25Yeah, and I don't think they will personally, but.
- 57:27And I think the same is the last couple of weeks as well.
- 57:29I mean, everybody's looking to see who's going to steal those points at the bottom, who's going to steal that 910 spot.
- 57:33And I think that's going to get another point.
- 57:36And if they do, this is huge at this point.
- 57:38They can keep, you know, stealing those points at the bottom.
- 57:40I mean, we're going to see them a lot higher than we used to.
- 57:43Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 57:45So let's just head right into it then, Joe, who do you who's on your podium this weekend?
- 57:48Well, Max is going to have a better race than he did last few weeks ago.
- 57:52So he's definitely on the podium.
- 57:54And then I've noticed the last three, the last, well, however many pods we've been doing this for, I've said the exact same three.
- 58:02So I'm switching it up this week.
- 58:04Lando, I want him on the podium.
- 58:06I think he had a very strong last year.
- 58:08I think he's going to come out swinging again this year.
- 58:10And then Sines, I want him to just keep that momentum going.
- 58:13Perfect. And I got Max.
- 58:16Obviously, I don't think he does that again.
- 58:17I'm going to put Max at, you know, he's going to win the race, but I'll put him in my top three as well as both Ferraris.
- 58:22I'll put Charles and Sines up there.
- 58:25All right.
- 58:26I originally I had the same as you, Joe, but I want to have some shake up in the overall points here.
- 58:32So I'm going to go with Verstappen, Sines.
- 58:34I think Sines is in Verstappen or Loks.
- 58:36I really wanted Lando, but I'm going to go with Checo.
- 58:39Mm.
- 58:40Dang, that's nice because I get I'm going Max, obviously, but like, and I'm going LeClaire and I really want to go Lando.
- 58:48But I also have a gut feeling this is a bounce back weekend for Checo as well.
- 58:52So that's crazy that you said that.
- 58:53And I got nothing to lose being last right now in points.
- 58:56So I don't I'd love to see Lando instead of Checo, though, as a fan of F1.
- 59:01I would love to see boom, boom, boom like that.
- 59:04That'd be wild.
- 59:05Yeah, I think any any other track, I'd probably say Checo.
- 59:08But watching that recap from last year, he was just not.
- 59:12And the McLarens didn't know how to drive.
- 59:14McLarens. Yeah, they were they were right there.
- 59:16Yeah, I just think that he's going to bounce back.
