Latest / Birdland Territory / O's dominate the Rays and remain in the mix for a wild card spot
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, Birdland, the Orioles went into the trap for this
- 0:10Speaker 1: series against the Rays, having gone two and four on
- 0:13Speaker 1: this road trip, falling out of the wild card race.
- 0:17Speaker 1: A lot going wrong in Birdland, and in three stunning
- 0:21Speaker 1: days in Tampa Saint Pete, the Orioles have dramatically altered
- 0:26Speaker 1: the season. I don't think that's too strong a word
- 0:28Speaker 1: to say. Steve, Tim and Brad with you another edition
- 0:31Speaker 1: of Birdland Territory. Who won run wins Friday and Saturday
- 0:36Speaker 1: for the team that was terrible in one run games
- 0:39Speaker 1: and now I tend to blow out as we tape this.
- 0:41Speaker 1: After Sunday's win at Tropicana Field, they had their biggest
- 0:45Speaker 1: inning of the year with two on and none out
- 0:48Speaker 1: these course seven runs in the sixth inning. It's I
- 0:51Speaker 1: don't know, guys. We got thirty minutes to try to
- 0:53Speaker 1: explain how they went into Tampa against a team that
- 0:56Speaker 1: had won nine straight and was forty one and eighteen
- 0:59Speaker 1: at home and now can complete a four game sweep
- 1:02Speaker 1: Monday night. It has been stunning, is the word.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I guess, Yeah, stunning.
- 1:08Speaker 3: And I think I'm done making predictions about what I
- 1:10Speaker 3: think this team can do, because honestly, I don't know, good, bad,
- 1:13Speaker 3: and different. It seems like you never know what you're
- 1:16Speaker 3: gonna get, and especially in a three game series, and
- 1:19Speaker 3: the way we take these shows, it's like half the time,
- 1:22Speaker 3: you know, we think we know what's going to come
- 1:24Speaker 3: the next time we have a show, and then by
- 1:26Speaker 3: the time we do it, we don't know what team
- 1:28Speaker 3: where we're actually watching. But it's been a really good
- 1:30Speaker 3: team to watch this weekend. This is kind of the
- 1:32Speaker 3: brand of baseball we've been hoping for this entire season,
- 1:35Speaker 3: and for them to go into the trop where the
- 1:38Speaker 3: race have been unbelievable this season. To say that I
- 1:41Speaker 3: thought they'd have a three game winning streak at the Trop,
- 1:45Speaker 3: I just don't think I could have predicted that going in.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So I guess, like we were saying before the show,
- 1:49Speaker 3: this is baseball, and I think this is American League
- 1:51Speaker 3: baseball at its best this year.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Just never know what's going to happen.
- 1:56Speaker 4: It really is unbelievable.
- 1:59Speaker 5: I just feel like there's been various points in the
- 2:02Speaker 5: year where you're thinking, Okay, maybe the wheels come off here,
- 2:06Speaker 5: and doing the shows on the fan Friday, you're thinking,
- 2:09Speaker 5: oh my gosh, this ten game stretch four at the
- 2:12Speaker 5: trop The Rays were forty one and eighteen at home
- 2:15Speaker 5: heading into this series. They won nine straight games. Heading
- 2:18Speaker 5: into this series, the Orioles coming off a gut punch
- 2:21Speaker 5: a rubber match in their prior series against the Twins,
- 2:26Speaker 5: losers of five of the last seven series, and they
- 2:29Speaker 5: rattle off three straight wins.
- 2:31Speaker 4: And you Cam Sanders with back.
- 2:34Speaker 5: To back saves and Colden Cowser's hitting home runs and
- 2:38Speaker 5: Gunner Henderson with a four hit game on Friday and
- 2:42Speaker 5: Jackson Holiday with multiple hits against left handed pitching.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Cowser as well.
- 2:47Speaker 5: Pete has been fantastic that this offense has just woke up.
- 2:52Speaker 5: And whatever you think of this team, and absolutely this
- 2:57Speaker 5: team has frustrated everyone various points this year. They fight,
- 3:02Speaker 5: they scratched, they call that they are not waving the
- 3:06Speaker 5: white flag. This season is far from over and they're
- 3:09Speaker 5: firmly in the mix for this final wildcard spot.
- 3:13Speaker 1: As at the end of the game Saturday night, if
- 3:15Speaker 1: the Rols were in a five way tie for the
- 3:17Speaker 1: wild card, that's just keeps being jumbled a bit. They
- 3:20Speaker 1: were a half game back of Texas beginning today, so
- 3:24Speaker 1: at worst at the end of Sunday night, there'll be
- 3:26Speaker 1: a half game back, they might be the wildcard leader.
- 3:28Speaker 1: It's just crazy right now with all these teams chasing
- 3:31Speaker 1: this thing. I'll tell you a big moment for the
- 3:35Speaker 1: Orioles was Pete Alonso being able to play today because
- 3:39Speaker 1: Saturday night we didn't know it was only a quote
- 3:42Speaker 1: unquote I'll say easy for us to say calf sore
- 3:46Speaker 1: and its calf cramp looked worse on the massive telecast.
- 3:49Speaker 1: They were talking like it would continue to be worse
- 3:52Speaker 1: and looked that way. And the guy showed up today
- 3:54Speaker 1: and played his five hundred and fortieth straight game and
- 3:56Speaker 1: had that big two run double. He's got ridiculous numbers
- 3:59Speaker 1: now during an eight game winning streak. We're gonna talk
- 4:02Speaker 1: about a lot of heroes today, but I mean, this
- 4:04Speaker 1: guy just keeps doing some great things.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Yeah, Pete's given them everything and more than I think
- 4:10Speaker 3: they could have asked for the season. When you signed him,
- 4:12Speaker 3: I think they would have said, this is exactly what
- 4:15Speaker 3: we were hoping for. And he's done everything and more.
- 4:17Speaker 3: And I think even lately he's stepped his game up
- 4:21Speaker 3: even further since they you know, trade away Adley, He's
- 4:23Speaker 3: really stepped up, you know, to the plate, you could say,
- 4:26Speaker 3: and just taking over as a leader, taken.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Over as a player.
- 4:31Speaker 3: He's just he's done everything and more and really has
- 4:34Speaker 3: like kind of get this offense in this team afloat
- 4:36Speaker 3: here and just has been spectacular. And we've talked about it.
- 4:40Speaker 3: I think throughout the season he's been the one guy
- 4:42Speaker 3: that we feel like in the offense that has really
- 4:44Speaker 3: done what they expected. But now he's having some guys
- 4:47Speaker 3: join them, and I think when they get on base
- 4:49Speaker 3: when Pete's on, I mean they've had him lead off
- 4:51Speaker 3: I think one of the games this series, and I
- 4:53Speaker 3: mean it's just like they're just getting they're trying to
- 4:56Speaker 3: figure out ways to get guys on base, because when
- 4:58Speaker 3: there's guys on base, he's not gonna be in it.
- 5:00Speaker 3: I'm really really keeping this offensive float here lately.
- 5:04Speaker 5: He's been great and it really is just a testament
- 5:07Speaker 5: to his leadership. Guys, and Brad, I think you hit
- 5:10Speaker 5: it on the head in terms of when they traded
- 5:13Speaker 5: away those players at the trade deadline and the Orioles
- 5:18Speaker 5: sold Pete. Wasn't you know, crying Pete. What is Michael
- 5:22Speaker 5: Aias doing? Why is the front office not believe in us?
- 5:25Speaker 5: He said, we're fine. You know, we have all the
- 5:27Speaker 5: faith in the front office, we have all the faith
- 5:29Speaker 5: in this twenty six man roster inside of this clubhouse.
- 5:33Speaker 5: And really ever since that point, he got off to
- 5:36Speaker 5: a little bit of a slow start in the month
- 5:38Speaker 5: of August, but you flash the numbers up there, Steve,
- 5:41Speaker 5: he's been fantastic and today, coming off the injury, yesterday
- 5:46Speaker 5: he had the huge two run double in the fifth
- 5:49Speaker 5: inning with two outs, and the Orioles scored all ten
- 5:52Speaker 5: of their runs with two outs. So it's exciting, man like,
- 5:56Speaker 5: and Pete is the one spearheading.
- 5:59Speaker 1: This sounds crazy to say it to him, but you
- 6:02Speaker 1: and I were on one of five seven Friday night
- 6:05Speaker 1: before the series started Baltimore Baseball Tonight, and I said,
- 6:09Speaker 1: I didn't predict it by any stretch, but I said,
- 6:12Speaker 1: here's what the Ools really need to him. They need
- 6:14Speaker 1: six and four. It's a tall ask in this ten
- 6:17Speaker 1: game stretch. Now, they could go three and four and
- 6:21Speaker 1: get six and four. It's quite amazing. And so when
- 6:25Speaker 1: we come back from this break, I want to ask
- 6:27Speaker 1: these guys about that, because, let's face it, being honest here,
- 6:30Speaker 1: this team has teased us this year and then they
- 6:33Speaker 1: fall back. Is that going to happen again? Or is
- 6:36Speaker 1: this it this time? And the charge is on. Let's
- 6:39Speaker 1: touch on that in a minute. On Birdland Territory.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Let's talk fathletics, shall we. They have apparel for every season.
- 6:48Speaker 6: We're wearing it as we talk about it. It's soft,
- 6:50Speaker 6: it's comfortable. I wear it on the show sometimes on FT.
- 6:53Speaker 6: What else do you love about it?
- 6:54Speaker 7: Kratz?
- 6:55Speaker 8: Well, I have it on right now, and I'm all
- 6:58Speaker 8: about quality. But you know, you know how good your
- 7:01Speaker 8: clothes are when you're a parent and your kids keep
- 7:05Speaker 8: stealing all of it. My daughter stole the sweatshirt, my
- 7:08Speaker 8: son sold one of my t shirts. So it's got
- 7:11Speaker 8: to be nice looking.
- 7:12Speaker 6: And if it gets a little bit chillier, then it's
- 7:15Speaker 6: layering season and they've got layers for the fall. Shop

- 7:34Speaker 7: That's fabletics dot Com slash foul for seventy to eighty
- 7:39Speaker 7: percent off everything as a new vip.
- 7:44Speaker 5: SO.
- 7:44Speaker 1: A few weeks ago, we saw the Oils win a
- 7:46Speaker 1: series at Dodger Stadium and then lose the series. At Anaheim,
- 7:50Speaker 1: we saw the Oils win seven in a row, and
- 7:52Speaker 1: I believe they only won like two of the next
- 7:54Speaker 1: seven series after that. It's happened where it looked like
- 7:57Speaker 1: here they go and then they don't. So I'm wondering
- 8:01Speaker 1: if this weekend where it really looks like here they go,
- 8:05Speaker 1: and knowing time is dwindling, it's changed it and this
- 8:09Speaker 1: is going to take hold. It doesn't mean they're going
- 8:10Speaker 1: to go eighteen and two, but they can't go after
- 8:15Speaker 1: this great series in Tampa, you know, four and eight
- 8:19Speaker 1: something like that.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Yeah, And I'd like to give a great prediction and say, yeah,
- 8:24Speaker 3: they could go on a sixteen and four or fifteen
- 8:26Speaker 3: to five stretch, but we just don't.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Honestly, we just don't know. At this point.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I think I think we should just kind of embrace
- 8:32Speaker 3: this weekend and like the guys in the clubhouse are doing,
- 8:34Speaker 3: I think they're going to.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Use this as momentum.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I feel like we've talked about the lack of being
- 8:39Speaker 3: able to take momentum this entire season, and I think
- 8:42Speaker 3: that's going to be the biggest question mark moving to
- 8:44Speaker 3: the series against the Yankees and then playing the Rays again.
- 8:47Speaker 3: We've seen them struggle at the trough. Then the Rays
- 8:49Speaker 3: came to Camdy Yards and they swept them. So it's
- 8:52Speaker 3: it's just it's a mixed bag lately. But I just
- 8:55Speaker 3: like seeing today Cole and kass are hitting home and off,
- 8:57Speaker 3: the lefty Jackson Holliday contributing in a big way. I
- 9:00Speaker 3: just think they're getting some of the guys that they
- 9:02Speaker 3: need to step up kind of stepping up this weekend.
- 9:05Speaker 3: And it's a really good sign to see Connor Henderson
- 9:07Speaker 3: with the four hit game on Friday.
- 9:09Speaker 2: But his swings have been really good.
- 9:10Speaker 3: I feel like his at bats have been way better
- 9:13Speaker 3: in the last week to ten days, and I feel
- 9:15Speaker 3: like they were even the months prior to that. So
- 9:18Speaker 3: for me, that gives me hope with this offense maybe
- 9:20Speaker 3: carrying some of that momentum. And then it's funny we
- 9:22Speaker 3: talked about I think the last episode kind of having
- 9:25Speaker 3: Chris Bassett coming back into the rotation.
- 9:26Speaker 2: We weren't sure if we wanted to have him in there.
- 9:29Speaker 2: The whole time.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Now, if this team's in the playoff hunt at in
- 9:32Speaker 3: the wildcard, he's exactly who you want in the rotation.
- 9:35Speaker 3: So it's kind of this jumble. You don't know how
- 9:38Speaker 3: to feel about it all as a fan. Just be excited,
- 9:42Speaker 3: ride the waves, and hopefully they can just continue it
- 9:44Speaker 3: back at home and you know, maybe pull off a
- 9:46Speaker 3: sweep tomorrow and go back into.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Camy Yards with some real momentum on Tuesday.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Today was a big spot for this club because I
- 9:54Speaker 5: think heading into this series, if you would have told Birdland, hey,
- 10:00Speaker 5: you're gonna take two of four.
- 10:01Speaker 4: I think everyone would have signed up for that. Oh
- 10:03Speaker 4: my gosh.
- 10:03Speaker 5: Absolutely well, you've already secured the series win at this point.
- 10:07Speaker 5: You took three of four, which no one could have
- 10:09Speaker 5: predicted heading into this series, and you have the opportunity
- 10:13Speaker 5: to get greedy and sweep the four game series tomorrow
- 10:17Speaker 5: night at the Trap.
- 10:19Speaker 4: It's hard to say if there's going to be carryover. Steve.
- 10:22Speaker 5: I think if there's one thing that we've seen a
- 10:24Speaker 5: lot of this year is just the roller coaster ride,
- 10:27Speaker 5: the inconsistencies with this ball club. But I think something
- 10:31Speaker 5: that's been a lot of fun for me, guys, is
- 10:35Speaker 5: this is a very loose team right now.
- 10:38Speaker 4: And you can point to a lot of different things.
- 10:41Speaker 5: Today Joel Pozo really feeling himself unintended.
- 10:47Speaker 4: You saw some guys do some.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Of that, but even Gunner Henderson, I thought Gunner he
- 10:54Speaker 5: got robbed twice today, and the second one where DeLuca
- 10:59Speaker 5: made a diving catch massive, well not massive, was on Peacock.
- 11:03Speaker 5: Peacock had that close up of Gunner and he just
- 11:07Speaker 5: started smiling and laughing.
- 11:10Speaker 4: And that might seem small to me, and maybe I'm
- 11:12Speaker 4: making this out.
- 11:12Speaker 5: To be bigger than it is, but I feel like
- 11:15Speaker 5: a few weeks ago he would have slammed his helmet
- 11:17Speaker 5: and slammed his bat. You know where he's had this
- 11:20Speaker 5: strong series, he's had quite frankly, a strong month of
- 11:23Speaker 5: August so far, where he got robbed a couple times today,
- 11:26Speaker 5: but he didn't.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Lose his cool over it.
- 11:28Speaker 5: This team just seems to be playing loose, and they're
- 11:33Speaker 5: playing with a lot of confidence right now.
- 11:37Speaker 1: The Oriels have nine lives, maybe fifteen this year. They
- 11:41Speaker 1: just every time people want to put a fork in them,
- 11:44Speaker 1: they're not ready for that. And this is why they
- 11:47Speaker 1: say it's a marathon. Not a sprint, and this is
- 11:50Speaker 1: why we were saying, even with forty one games left,
- 11:53Speaker 1: for them to go twenty six and fifteen seems improbable,
- 11:56Speaker 1: but it could happen. It's happened to others when it
- 11:59Speaker 1: didn't seem like that. And sometimes when teams rerail off
- 12:02Speaker 1: big streaks, you never see it coming because they're not
- 12:04Speaker 1: playing well and then they win ten in a row.
- 12:06Speaker 1: We didn't see this coming. No one saw them coming
- 12:09Speaker 1: into Tampa doing this if they couldn't beat the Rangers
- 12:12Speaker 1: or the Twins, but they did it, so call credit
- 12:15Speaker 1: to them for that. Let's touch on Trevor Rodgers. He
- 12:19Speaker 1: gave up eight runs at the trop in May and
- 12:22Speaker 1: again today, that was an early pictures dul It looked
- 12:25Speaker 1: like the final is going to be three to two,
- 12:26Speaker 1: two to one, not ten to two. And Trevor Rodgers
- 12:29Speaker 1: was getting it done and has he just consistently has
- 12:33Speaker 1: for this team.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and I was really glad that they let him
- 12:36Speaker 3: finish that sixth inning. They had a hoppy ready to
- 12:39Speaker 3: come in the game, and Craig Albin has left him
- 12:42Speaker 3: out there to get that final out, and I just
- 12:43Speaker 3: I really like that. It's tough as a starting pitcher,
- 12:46Speaker 3: and really any picture when you had that long of
- 12:48Speaker 3: a half an inning, I think it was close to
- 12:50Speaker 3: a half an hour. He had to sit and to
- 12:52Speaker 3: go back out there, and he didn't put up a zero,
- 12:54Speaker 3: but he didn't let the floodgates open. He didn't have
- 12:56Speaker 3: to give the ball back down to the bullpen and
- 12:59Speaker 3: force them to get sure out in that game. And
- 13:02Speaker 3: I just really like the fact that they let him
- 13:03Speaker 3: go out there finish that editing and he's just been
- 13:06Speaker 3: the guy they expected. He's been a bulldog. He got
- 13:08Speaker 3: through six innings today and just really kind of settled
- 13:12Speaker 3: that game in. After they score all those runs. The
- 13:13Speaker 3: last thing you want to do there is when you
- 13:15Speaker 3: get up big, is to give up a three or
- 13:17Speaker 3: four spot, and left Tampa back in that game.
- 13:19Speaker 2: So that was a really big inning there.
- 13:20Speaker 3: I know it didn't really seem like it at the time,
- 13:22Speaker 3: but I know players were sitting down there going that
- 13:25Speaker 3: was a big out. That was a big inning there
- 13:26Speaker 3: to kind of stop the momentum and keep the score
- 13:29Speaker 3: at Bay where it was. And he just continues to
- 13:31Speaker 3: impress like he has for the last three months now,
- 13:34Speaker 3: I guess three plus months at this point.
- 13:36Speaker 5: And It really just showed you how much his season
- 13:39Speaker 5: has turned around, because they were bringing that up on
- 13:41Speaker 5: the broadcast today, just him getting shelled at the trop
- 13:45Speaker 5: a couple of months ago and Brian Roberts bringing up
- 13:48Speaker 5: Bay that was him coming back from the flu, and
- 13:51Speaker 5: we know that the month of May was really really
- 13:53Speaker 5: rough for Rogers. But he's in a really fine groove
- 13:56Speaker 5: right now, and he had that four seamer working today.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Brad.
- 13:59Speaker 5: He had ten whiffs on that four seamer, but he
- 14:03Speaker 5: just was pitching from ahead. He was filling the strike zone.
- 14:06Speaker 5: You know, he got strike one twenty of twenty six
- 14:10Speaker 5: batters that he faced, seventy seven percent. When you're pitching
- 14:14Speaker 5: ahead like that, that's a recipe for success.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Yeah, And I actually think both announcers mentioned that later.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I think it was in the sixth inning. And I
- 14:23Speaker 3: think the NBC broadcast is great how they have an
- 14:25Speaker 3: announcer from the Rays and announcer from the Orioles and
- 14:28Speaker 3: they just kind of like compare notes with each other
- 14:30Speaker 3: on the team. But they mentioned that, and they talked
- 14:32Speaker 3: about how he doesn't have this blow you away stuff,
- 14:34Speaker 3: but it's it's kind of refreshing watching pictures like Trevor Rodgers.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Go out there, work the corners, work the top of
- 14:40Speaker 3: the zone, work the bottom of the zone, and like
- 14:41Speaker 3: you said, when he gets ahead, good luck. And I
- 14:44Speaker 3: think with an aggressive lineup like the Rays have, it
- 14:47Speaker 3: kind of can work against him at times that you're
- 14:49Speaker 3: almost too aggressive because when he's spotting up. They mentioned
- 14:53Speaker 3: on the broadcast that you almost don't have an approach
- 14:55Speaker 3: for that type of picture, and that's I think he
- 14:57Speaker 3: used that to his advantage today against a really great
- 15:00Speaker 3: lineup and just did a tremendous job.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Since the trade deadline when the Oils traded prominent players,
- 15:07Speaker 1: they're seven and five and they've gained ground after these
- 15:10Speaker 1: three wins. So again, nine lives, maybe fifteen things happen.
- 15:15Speaker 1: It looked like it's going to mean the end, and
- 15:17Speaker 1: it just hasn't for this team. When we come back,
- 15:20Speaker 1: I want to get into Cam Sanders a little bit,
- 15:23Speaker 1: and Brad, I think you can relate to this a
- 15:25Speaker 1: guy who's who knows is he finding himself? Is this
- 15:29Speaker 1: a blip in the radar and in his career? Who
- 15:31Speaker 1: knows how it's going to play out. But he's been
- 15:33Speaker 1: on the mound for some huge moments in the last
- 15:35Speaker 1: few weeks around the trip to Triple A, and he
- 15:39Speaker 1: keeps coming through, big, big for the Orioles at a
- 15:41Speaker 1: time when they're still waiting to hope. Felix fatistic inglod Back,
- 15:45Speaker 1: Hellsley's not there, some other bullpen guys are inconsistent, and
- 15:49Speaker 1: what a job he's done. We'll touch on that next.
- 15:52Speaker 1: On Birdland Territory.
- 15:53Speaker 6: This is that time of year, aj it is Baseball's
- 15:56Speaker 6: time to shine, and it is see geeks time to

- 16:55Speaker 1: From twenty seventeen through twenty twenty two, that's a six
- 16:58Speaker 1: year period, Tempa won the season series every year from
- 17:02Speaker 1: the Oriols. I think a lot of fans would be
- 17:04Speaker 1: surprised to learn since twenty twenty three, the Orioles have
- 17:08Speaker 1: a big edge in the head to head. In twenty
- 17:11Speaker 1: twenty three, the Oriols went eight and five against the Rays.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I was a division winning Oriole team. Playoff oriol team
- 17:17Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four went nine to four, losing oriol
- 17:21Speaker 1: team last year went seven and six, and a team
- 17:24Speaker 1: that's two games under five hundred as we tape is
- 17:27Speaker 1: six and three with six straight wins against the Rays.
- 17:30Speaker 1: That's thirty and eighteen. That's six twenty five ball. That's
- 17:34Speaker 1: playoff ball, and then some. Since twenty twenty three against
- 17:37Speaker 1: a very respected Aleas opponent. I think every fan in
- 17:41Speaker 1: Birdland respects what the Rays continue to do and the
- 17:45Speaker 1: Orioles recently continue to beat them again. I think Bradley
- 17:50Speaker 1: you said, don't try to explain it, just enjoy it.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 17:55Speaker 3: It's weird when you play as many games as you
- 17:57Speaker 3: do in your division, there's just certain teams that you
- 18:00Speaker 3: matchup better against for whatever the reason may be. You
- 18:02Speaker 3: could be in last place, they could be the first
- 18:03Speaker 3: place team. But sometimes it just matches.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Up better that way. And now it's only thirteen games.
- 18:09Speaker 3: When I was playing, it was nineteen games in division,
- 18:11Speaker 3: and that was a huge advantage when you had teams
- 18:13Speaker 3: that you just knew you played well against. It was
- 18:16Speaker 3: like a sigh of relief because the Al East can
- 18:18Speaker 3: be a can be a beast at times, and I
- 18:20Speaker 3: just think the Oriols just feel comfortable playing the Race.
- 18:22Speaker 3: For whatever the reason may be. The matchups just seem
- 18:25Speaker 3: to work out that because it doesn't matter. We've had
- 18:28Speaker 3: different managers, different lineups, but they seem to win these
- 18:31Speaker 3: games against the Race, So it's it's definitely an advantage
- 18:33Speaker 3: when you feel comfortable against a team and they have
- 18:36Speaker 3: six games here in the next ten days, like we've
- 18:37Speaker 3: talked about against them, so it's or seven games against them,
- 18:41Speaker 3: and it's it's it's big. It's a big time of
- 18:43Speaker 3: year to face a team you're comfortable playing. And obviously
- 18:47Speaker 3: the Oriols feel that way because these last six games
- 18:48Speaker 3: against them have been big time wins for.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Them, by forty six to twenty. Yeah, you've doubled the
- 18:56Speaker 1: score on the Rays in winning six straight. They've had
- 18:59Speaker 1: a couple of big numbers against them. I mean, forty
- 19:01Speaker 1: six runs in six games against Tampa's pitching. Come on,
- 19:05Speaker 1: so let's get back to Cam Sanders. What a story
- 19:08Speaker 1: and Brad, you, more than any of us can relate
- 19:11Speaker 1: to a guy who had to establish himself and maybe
- 19:13Speaker 1: that we're seeing it in real time what he did
- 19:16Speaker 1: in Houston. Then he went back, then he came back,
- 19:19Speaker 1: and look at the spots they're throwing this guy in
- 19:22Speaker 1: seems to have ice water in his veins. He's been
- 19:25Speaker 1: optioned five or six times to the miners this year,
- 19:28Speaker 1: and yeah, he's on the mound in Tampa with a
- 19:30Speaker 1: one run lead.
- 19:32Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 19:34Speaker 3: You obviously hope when you make waiver claims and you
- 19:37Speaker 3: pick guys up off of DFA limbo that this can happen.
- 19:40Speaker 3: But I don't know if the Oarls would have seen
- 19:43Speaker 3: Cam Sanders having three saves in the last couple of months. Here,
- 19:46Speaker 3: like you pick up a guy that maybe can pick
- 19:49Speaker 3: up some innings and you think he's got a big
- 19:51Speaker 3: arm and he's gone out there and he.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Well, oh do we lose Brad? Are you there?
- 20:07Speaker 4: I think we lost bread.
- 20:09Speaker 1: We might have lost a second. But then he's been
- 20:12Speaker 1: he's been while we waited on Brad. Tim has been. Uh,
- 20:16Speaker 1: this kid Sander not really a kid. I guess he's
- 20:18Speaker 1: been around a little bit, but he's obviously not giving
- 20:22Speaker 1: up on himself and he has a lot of belief
- 20:24Speaker 1: in what he can do. Man, he's been something.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Oh, he's been unbelievable.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Uh.
- 20:29Speaker 5: And the spots that he's been put in Steve even
- 20:32Speaker 5: immediately just going back to that series in Houston where
- 20:36Speaker 5: I remember it was a bases loaded jam he got
- 20:38Speaker 5: out of he gotta win, then got.
- 20:40Speaker 4: To save, then got sent down.
- 20:42Speaker 5: And you look at just what he's been put into
- 20:45Speaker 5: just in the past couple of days in this race series,
- 20:49Speaker 5: it looks like, oh my gosh, you're near cano. He
- 20:52Speaker 5: didn't have it on Friday night one pitch and then
- 20:55Speaker 5: he was able to get that save on Friday, came
- 20:58Speaker 5: back in Saturday and extra innings in that jam, and
- 21:02Speaker 5: these guys need to emerge because look, bullpen that was
- 21:06Speaker 5: a question mark heading into the trade deadline. They ended
- 21:09Speaker 5: up trading away Tyler Wells, which was one of their
- 21:11Speaker 5: better bullpen pieces. But you know, even guys like Josh
- 21:15Speaker 5: Walker has stepped up, Hoppy has stepped up.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Some new additions since that point have have took.
- 21:23Speaker 1: And by the way, I think Brad's power went out
- 21:25Speaker 1: during our taping, which coaches have the have this picture
- 21:29Speaker 1: froze up, so I think we might be a two
- 21:31Speaker 1: man show for our final minutes here. But we've had
- 21:33Speaker 1: we've had to do it before, and it's not the
- 21:35Speaker 1: first time Tim and I have been together on the
- 21:37Speaker 1: air this year here at other places, so we can
- 21:40Speaker 1: we can handle it. But I just have a lot
- 21:43Speaker 1: of respect for guys who keep after it, because when
- 21:47Speaker 1: you keep getting sent to the minors, obviously it's discouraging
- 21:51Speaker 1: and it's easy to say, keep keep motivated, keep your
- 21:54Speaker 1: chin up, keep pitching. Well, you'll get another chance, but
- 21:58Speaker 1: it's another thing to do it. And this guy's really
- 22:00Speaker 1: done it.
- 22:02Speaker 5: No, he absolutely has, and you can Just think of
- 22:05Speaker 5: multiple guys this season, Steve, that have just shown up
- 22:09Speaker 5: out of nowhere and really carved out roles. But Sanders
- 22:13Speaker 5: and look what this means in the long term of things.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Does he have this long run in the majors? Who knows.
- 22:19Speaker 4: But that's what's cool about sports, right These underdog stories,
- 22:25Speaker 4: guys that have been optioned, guys that have been dfad
- 22:28Speaker 4: and catch on somewhere else and stick, and he's been
- 22:31Speaker 4: He's been huge for them in this stretch.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Huge. Our teammate is back when we on the other
- 22:37Speaker 1: side of this would be a three man team again
- 22:39Speaker 1: here on Birdland Territory.
- 22:43Speaker 10: Big Bad Morning Show, Finny and Haney, Inside Access Live
- 22:48Speaker 10: on YouTube weekdays six till six, Search Baltimore one oh

- 22:55Speaker 10: your phone and never miss which I missed one O
- 22:58Speaker 10: five seven the Fan.
- 23:01Speaker 1: So the Oaths can make it four straight against the
- 23:03Speaker 1: Rays on Monday night. Brad, how's everything in your world
- 23:07Speaker 1: these days? Is everything all right there?
- 23:09Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 23:09Speaker 3: I get yeah, We're all right. It's been like ninety
- 23:13Speaker 3: eight plus. He gets there must just be a rolling
- 23:15Speaker 3: blockout right now or something.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Sorry about that, No, Priube at all. Hey, in the
- 23:20Speaker 1: final minutes, let's touch on little things for the Orioles today,
- 23:23Speaker 1: which meant big things. I go back to the third inning,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I thought Leoti Tavers made a base running blunder. He
- 23:30Speaker 1: was called out on the play at second replay showed
- 23:33Speaker 1: he just got his hand in there to be safe
- 23:36Speaker 1: and that would have been a third out. They go
- 23:38Speaker 1: on to get the left on left hit by Jackson
- 23:40Speaker 1: holiday so big to run double by Pete. An inning later,
- 23:44Speaker 1: Jackson is in an O two hole left on left.
- 23:47Speaker 1: He takes a pitch which the announcers on Peacock are like,
- 23:50Speaker 1: I don't know how I took that, But then he
- 23:52Speaker 1: gets a big hit after that. Cowser left on left today,
- 23:56Speaker 1: I mean, maybe we're seeing guys a point where these
- 23:59Speaker 1: left the hitters will start playing more often against lefty pitchers.
- 24:06Speaker 3: And that's what that's my hope that we've been talking
- 24:07Speaker 3: about it for a few episodes now, and I just
- 24:10Speaker 3: hope that these guys do get consistent at bats. And
- 24:13Speaker 3: I think I was honestly thinking about it today that
- 24:15Speaker 3: I think it's been a couple of weeks now since
- 24:17Speaker 3: Adlie got traded, and I think it's the guys are
- 24:20Speaker 3: starting to realize people have to step up, and I
- 24:23Speaker 3: think maybe they're just feeling more comfortable not having that big,
- 24:26Speaker 3: you know, clubhouse presidence that Adlie probably had with the team,
- 24:29Speaker 3: and they're just realizing that it's our turn, it's our
- 24:32Speaker 3: time now. And I just think Jackson especially has looked
- 24:35Speaker 3: extremely comfortable hitting a further up in the lineup these
- 24:38Speaker 3: last couple of weeks, and that to me has been
- 24:40Speaker 3: really encouraging. And I've been We've been harboring on this
- 24:43Speaker 3: a lot, but I just want to see calling out
- 24:44Speaker 3: there every day. He can do things like we've talked
- 24:46Speaker 3: about that nobody else on this roster can do. And
- 24:49Speaker 3: seeing him at a home run today and a lefty
- 24:51Speaker 3: was was great to see.
- 24:52Speaker 2: And how we get to see more of it here
- 24:54Speaker 2: moving forward.
- 24:56Speaker 5: I think at a minimum, guys we have seen at
- 24:59Speaker 5: least Jackson holiday this platoon's done, and I think that
- 25:03Speaker 5: it's probably gone for his career at this point. He's
- 25:07Speaker 5: been in there every single day, no matter what pitcher
- 25:11Speaker 5: is out there, and Colton, it has been great that
- 25:14Speaker 5: we've been seeing him get more opportunities against left handed
- 25:17Speaker 5: pitching and him coming through hitting a home run against
- 25:20Speaker 5: the lefty and who knows, man like it seems like
- 25:24Speaker 5: the past ten games or so, it could be the
- 25:27Speaker 5: start of another coldon Cowser hot streak right now, which
- 25:30Speaker 5: would come at the right time in this stretch run.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Getting back to Jackson for a minute, I think they
- 25:36Speaker 1: have had Maybe they were saying seven leadoff hitters in
- 25:40Speaker 1: the last two weeks. Obviously Pete did it, O'Neil did it.
- 25:44Speaker 1: It was getting crazy on the leadoff spot. But they're
- 25:46Speaker 1: just searching today Holiday hit first. I would like to
- 25:50Speaker 1: see them go with him in the leadoff spot from
- 25:53Speaker 1: here on out. And here's why. Is he completely ready
- 25:55Speaker 1: for that? Maybe not, But I just think Jackson Holliday
- 25:59Speaker 1: is not a He is ready for big moments, as
- 26:02Speaker 1: that means he's always gonna come through, of course not.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Is he going to have another two for twenty in
- 26:06Speaker 1: there somewhere, probably, But I just think he's not afraid.
- 26:09Speaker 1: He's ready for challenges and he's finally sort of established
- 26:14Speaker 1: as a major leaguer, and I, like you guys were saying,
- 26:17Speaker 1: I see confidence that he's ready to take off.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with that. I Actually I was gonna
- 26:23Speaker 3: say the same thing, Steve. I really like him in
- 26:25Speaker 3: the leadoff spot. I just think it brings different dynamic
- 26:28Speaker 3: up there, and he has shown the ability to work counts.
- 26:31Speaker 3: It's not like he's just going up there being a
- 26:33Speaker 3: huge free swinger. And I think he's making more contact
- 26:35Speaker 3: than he has in the past, and I think that's
- 26:38Speaker 3: a huge attribute for somebody leading off. So I think
- 26:41Speaker 3: it would be great to get him up there and
- 26:42Speaker 3: just have somebody that just starts the game. Like I
- 26:45Speaker 3: feel like they change a lineup so much, it would
- 26:47Speaker 3: be great to just have one guy start at the
- 26:50Speaker 3: top and just be the guy that leads off every
- 26:52Speaker 3: single game and then kind of filling however you want
- 26:55Speaker 3: behind that.
- 26:55Speaker 2: But I think he'd be a great choice to put
- 26:58Speaker 2: in that spot.
- 27:00Speaker 4: And look, it's not a foreign spot for him.
- 27:02Speaker 5: He let off a ton for the Orioles last season
- 27:05Speaker 5: and he just has that profile guys where like you said,
- 27:08Speaker 5: Braddy works counts. He's a contact hitter, he can spray
- 27:11Speaker 5: the ball to all parts of the ballpark, and he
- 27:14Speaker 5: can run. This is an athletic player, so I think
- 27:18Speaker 5: he really fits the bill. He has that type of
- 27:21Speaker 5: profile and you would like to see them settle in
- 27:24Speaker 5: on a leadoff guy. It seems like it's been, you know,
- 27:27Speaker 5: a revolving door there for quite a bit.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Now.
- 27:30Speaker 5: To have someone in there with some continuity, I think
- 27:33Speaker 5: would be a good thing.
- 27:36Speaker 1: When this series began, Tim you and I on the
- 27:38Speaker 1: radio touched on the defensive disparity between these teams. Tampa
- 27:42Speaker 1: Bay is a great defensive team here. We've seen it
- 27:44Speaker 1: for three days. Gunner Henderson, you know, every time he
- 27:48Speaker 1: hits a rocket, they run it down. But the Orioles
- 27:51Speaker 1: won three games. So I think the point we're seeing
- 27:54Speaker 1: here is even with mediocre defense, you can win games.
- 27:58Speaker 1: And the Oils have been pretty clean. Knock on wood here.
- 28:01Speaker 1: These three games hadn't been too many buttoners that I
- 28:03Speaker 1: can think of, and yet Tampa's clearly the better defensive team.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I don't think there's a question about that. That doesn't
- 28:09Speaker 1: mean they went every time, and obviously it hasn't meant
- 28:11Speaker 1: that here. So I guess what I'm trying to say
- 28:15Speaker 1: is average ish are a little better defense with other
- 28:18Speaker 1: things working, can still be good enough some nights.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Many nights, Oh man, I think, yeah, Oh you're good.
- 28:28Speaker 3: God.
- 28:30Speaker 4: I was gonna say, look, I.
- 28:31Speaker 5: Think that that really sticks out the most guys is
- 28:35Speaker 5: the Orioles are getting up the most under and runs
- 28:37Speaker 5: in baseball.
- 28:37Speaker 4: I mean, if they were.
- 28:38Speaker 5: Middle of the pack as opposed to thirtieth, how many
- 28:42Speaker 5: more wins would they have at that point?
- 28:44Speaker 4: You know, I think it's a good point, Steve.
- 28:50Speaker 1: But they got the wins this weekend and that was
- 28:53Speaker 1: the important thing. And so as we put a bow
- 28:56Speaker 1: on this, man, it sounds dramatic to say they saved
- 29:01Speaker 1: the season, but I think they they changed dramatically the
- 29:05Speaker 1: trajectory of the season, which was very different when we
- 29:09Speaker 1: went on Thursday into the off day. Two series losses
- 29:13Speaker 1: and what's happened now. And I think, Brad, you made
- 29:15Speaker 1: a good point. You ros have a comfort level against
- 29:17Speaker 1: some of these al these teams. They know they can
- 29:20Speaker 1: beat the Yankees, they have beaten the Rays, and so
- 29:22Speaker 1: now we see if they can finish it off Monday night.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Either way, they're going to get a series win at
- 29:27Speaker 1: the Trap. So pretty stunning turn of events in Birdland.
- 29:31Speaker 1: And I think they've got us all tuned in now
- 29:35Speaker 1: for what follows for sure. All right, guys, so.
- 29:41Speaker 3: I think like it's just kind of as it, Yeah,
- 29:47Speaker 3: sounds good. How does it say that those fans just
- 29:48Speaker 3: ride this wave and because uh, we don't talking about
- 29:53Speaker 3: how they're out of it again, but it's uh during
- 29:56Speaker 3: the wild card and uh, well this game, like we've
- 30:00Speaker 3: been talking about, I feel like for the last couple of.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Months, it hasn't been dull. We've said that a few
- 30:07Speaker 1: times on this show, and today and the last few
- 30:10Speaker 1: days show us that that is very, very true in Birdland.
- 30:14Speaker 1: So it was fans. Thanks for tuning in, keep subscribing
