- 1:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know how long this intro is.
- 1:12Speaker 5: If it's the album... Okay, so yeah.
- 1:15Speaker 4: That wasn't the album version because that is like a
- 1:18Speaker 4: six-minute intro.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Well, the album or radio edit. The radio edit. That
- 1:24Speaker 5: was album radio edit.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Okay, but the actual album is a long intro.
- 1:29Speaker 5: No, I know.
- 1:29Speaker 4: That's why I was like, I can't wait that long.
- 1:31Speaker 5: You do understand, like, in my parents' will, I've already
- 1:36Speaker 5: declared I'm getting all the albums, which includes the original three... album,
- 1:41Speaker 5: LP of Thriller. Those are coming to me. The Sisters,
- 1:47Speaker 5: y'all can fight over the other stuff. I've already declared
- 1:50Speaker 5: the albums.
- 1:51Speaker 4: The things that you're passionate about are the things that
- 1:53Speaker 4: you're passionate about. Chip Howard Sports Talk on a Thursday afternoon,
- 1:56Speaker 4: taken over by Jason and Jared. Jason Cornelius, Jared Hickson.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Gotta get that Kids Incorporated album.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Sports Radio, 1150 AM The Zone.
- 2:05Speaker 5: Yeah, and that is a joke. If you are under
- 2:07Speaker 5: the age of 45, you've got no clue what I'm talking.
- 2:09Speaker 4: About on that. 93.7 FM. Oh, a wonderful Thursday afternoon.
- 2:15Speaker 4: We will pick up the pace this hour or make
- 2:18Speaker 4: it more lively.
- 2:19Speaker 5: Hey, it's the bye week, so you don't have to
- 2:22Speaker 5: worry about Aggie football. We're going to tell you all
- 2:25Speaker 5: the stuff you need to watch because you've got total
- 2:28Speaker 5: freedom this weekend.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Yeah, nothing's going to bring you down, bog you down.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Hurt your heart.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Just, you know, again, enjoy what is, or at least
- 2:40Speaker 5: for this year, because Lord knows the 2014 playoff is
- 2:44Speaker 5: probably going to screw it up next year. Enjoy what
- 2:47Speaker 5: these 14 weeks bring us in the fall.
- 2:51Speaker 6: And at least you have the Houston Texans bye week
- 2:53Speaker 6: as well.
- 2:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:56Speaker 4: I hated that. I mean, I thought like last week
- 2:59Speaker 4: for the Texans was just the, That was going to
- 3:01Speaker 4: really turn the game around.
- 3:02Speaker 5: While we're talking about this, I guess go ahead and
- 3:04Speaker 5: hit the sounder so we can talk about... There we go.
- 3:12Speaker 8: The games are Georgia versus Florida, and that is the tiebreaker.
- 3:19Speaker 8: Rudder versus Waco. College Station versus Glenn. Wisconsin versus Iowa.
- 3:23Speaker 8: Arizona versus Texas Tech. Northwestern versus Oregon. Clemson versus Florida State.
- 3:29Speaker 8: South Carolina versus Oklahoma. Utah versus Cincinnati. And Cardinals versus Cowboys.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Okay.
- 3:34Speaker 8: You have less than 24 hours to submit your stuff.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Chip, I don't know if you're listening.
- 3:40Speaker 4: He's on the boat.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Dude, are you on the sickos committee? I mean, you
- 3:45Speaker 5: got some games in here that, oh, these are, this
- 3:48Speaker 5: is just like nasty. I mean, anything Big Ten, you
- 3:54Speaker 5: need to look at those, look at those over-unders on
- 3:57Speaker 5: the Big Ten this weekend. It's, it's just, oh. You
- 4:02Speaker 5: thought last weekend was bad? No, this weekend's even worse.
- 4:05Speaker 8: That's Friday's Furious Football Contest brought to you by Chad
- 4:07Speaker 8: Jones Law and Zorman Flooring.
- 4:11Speaker 4: So you're saying you don't like what Chip picks? Well, no.
- 4:15Speaker 5: Okay. I have been trying to at least win a
- 4:19Speaker 5: week for years now. I mean, we may be getting
- 4:24Speaker 5: into decades. And I think it was week three, I
- 4:27Speaker 5: ended up only winning three games. Like, that was a bad,
- 4:30Speaker 5: bad one. It was basically like you might as well
- 4:32Speaker 5: have just not even tried that week. If you win three,
- 4:35Speaker 5: then you've got no chance to win this thing overall. But, man,
- 4:39Speaker 5: last week and especially this week, I mean, Wisconsin, Iowa.
- 4:45Speaker 6: That over-under is 36.5.
- 4:45Speaker 7: Oh, God.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Oh, wait.
- 4:49Speaker 5: Just wait. Northwestern, Oregon, 47.5.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:52Speaker 4: And I.
- 4:53Speaker 5: Think that's largely just due to the fact Chip Kelly's
- 4:57Speaker 5: having a homecoming and he's throwing all sorts of weird
- 4:59Speaker 5: stuff at people this year. Like, if Northwestern wins this game,
- 5:03Speaker 5: we're going to have to start having the conversation about Northwestern.
- 5:06Speaker 5: We're going to have to have that conversation. Yeah, I know.
- 5:10Speaker 5: And then Clemson, Florida State, you want to talk about
- 5:13Speaker 5: Anxiety Bowl? Let's talk about Clemson, Florida State.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Who is on the hotter seat?
- 5:20Speaker 5: So the problem is Florida State cannot fire Mike Norvell
- 5:23Speaker 5: because they don't have the money. We talked about it.
- 5:26Speaker 4: You and I were sending messages.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Did you see the letter that the university president put
- 5:32Speaker 5: out last week because it was their bye week? It's basically,
- 5:35Speaker 5: we acknowledge things aren't going well. And we haven't hired
- 5:39Speaker 5: a new AD, and we haven't fired our football coach,
- 5:42Speaker 5: but we got a lot of debt because of all
- 5:44Speaker 5: the stuff we're doing. It's $ 400 million. It's a two-page letter.
- 5:50Speaker 5: It basically says, hey, if you want us to do something,
- 5:53Speaker 5: someone needs to write a great big check.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Yep.
- 5:56Speaker 4: And I haven't seen the books, and so saying that
- 5:59Speaker 4: you are $ 400 million in debt, and a lot of
- 6:01Speaker 4: people make it seem like it's just all negative, but
- 6:05Speaker 4: it can't be good for them to have that much
- 6:08Speaker 4: debt sitting on their books. No.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Well, and again, okay, when we talk about the business
- 6:16Speaker 5: of college football, and we talk about– The unintended consequences
- 6:23Speaker 5: and the moral hazard of universities, and especially public universities,
- 6:27Speaker 5: giving out these massive contracts to coaches, especially after typically
- 6:32Speaker 5: just a season of success.
- 6:34Speaker 4: You get one good season, yeah.
- 6:37Speaker 5: You put yourself in this terrible predicament where when things
- 6:42Speaker 5: start to not go as well, you're on the hook
- 6:47Speaker 5: because you've given away all the power. And so I
- 6:52Speaker 5: don't know if we want to delve into our thoughts
- 6:54Speaker 5: on the whole Protect College Sports Act, but the simple
- 6:57Speaker 5: fact that in all of the discussion about how NIL
- 7:02Speaker 5: is so bad and it's ruining the sport, no, the
- 7:06Speaker 5: two things ruining the sport are radical conference realignment. Thank you, Mr.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Josh Pate, for pointing that out. And I would also say,
- 7:13Speaker 5: coach's contracts which by the way were not even addressed
- 7:16Speaker 5: as part of this legislation.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Not at all haven't been touched and here's my question
- 7:19Speaker 4: and we can go back uh years on this and
- 7:22Speaker 4: and where buyouts actually came from remember when buyouts were
- 7:28Speaker 4: to basically make sure that your coach stayed yes and
- 7:32Speaker 4: because the other school would have to pay that to
- 7:34Speaker 4: pull your coach away and now it's turned the complete
- 7:38Speaker 4: opposite that that is what a school has to pay
- 7:40Speaker 4: to get rid of your.
- 7:42Speaker 5: Coach It's, it's, it's asinine, especially fully guaranteed contracts that
- 7:51Speaker 5: have no stipulations about the flip side. Okay. I, I
- 7:59Speaker 5: was a huge, in my top three, as far as
- 8:02Speaker 5: when you fire Jimbo, so you're going to pay the seven,
- 8:05Speaker 5: you're going to have to pay the remainder of the
- 8:07Speaker 5: 77 million. My top three coaching candidates to come to
- 8:10Speaker 5: A & M were Dan Lanning, uh, Kyle Whittingham and
- 8:15Speaker 5: Mike Elko. I'm glad we got Elko because you got
- 8:19Speaker 5: him at what I believed you got him at value.
- 8:22Speaker 5: He was coming from Duke. So you weren't having to pay, uh, um,
- 8:26Speaker 5: you were having to pay a buyout on his contract
- 8:28Speaker 5: with Duke, but you were getting him per year at value. Uh,
- 8:32Speaker 5: if you were going to get Dan Lanning, you knew
- 8:34Speaker 5: you were going to have to pay big money because
- 8:36Speaker 5: of he was where he was being courted. And frankly,
- 8:39Speaker 5: based on what we're seeing in Oregon without, um, Will
- 8:43Speaker 5: Stein as his offensive coordinator. I think we dodged a
- 8:46Speaker 5: bullet there because, folks, the number two team in the
- 8:50Speaker 5: preseason poll, they are god-awful.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Yes, it has not been good.
- 8:53Speaker 5: And it's not just because Dante Moore got injured. They
- 8:56Speaker 5: were bad in game two before. Now, and then with
- 9:03Speaker 5: Kyle Whittingham, we're kind of seeing the same thing at Michigan.
- 9:08Speaker 5: When he doesn't have all his coaches and players from Utah,
- 9:12Speaker 5: Michigan– Michigan looks good on defense, but on offense, they're
- 9:15Speaker 5: truly atrocious. But you got value with Elko. But again,
- 9:19Speaker 5: we make the playoff last year, so now he should
- 9:23Speaker 5: be rewarded. But once you are rewarded, the expectation is
- 9:26Speaker 5: then you have to continue to do at that level.
- 9:31Speaker 5: I am fine with a down year. I understand it's
- 9:34Speaker 5: going to happen.
- 9:35Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 9:36Speaker 5: But this is where college football needs to morph, and
- 9:40Speaker 5: this is, I think, where you're going to see– this
- 9:42Speaker 5: is why you're seeing success in certain places, a la
- 9:46Speaker 5: at UCLA, where basically they were left for dead moving
- 9:51Speaker 5: to the Big Ten. In the NIL era, we finally
- 9:56Speaker 5: have a measure of return on investment because what have
- 10:00Speaker 5: we dealt with for decades? We dealt with the five-star system.
- 10:04Speaker 5: It was totally based off how you performed in high
- 10:07Speaker 5: school and then the expectation that what you would do
- 10:10Speaker 5: in college. And because we didn't have the transfer portal
- 10:13Speaker 5: or NIL, you were then basically in this recruiting model
- 10:17Speaker 5: where you had to start recruiting almost at the junior
- 10:19Speaker 5: high level, but you were trying to keep that conveyor
- 10:24Speaker 5: belt of recruits coming in to refresh your lineup so
- 10:26Speaker 5: you can maintain your status. Now in the NIL era
- 10:29Speaker 5: with the transfer portal, we have dollar amounts. You can
- 10:33Speaker 5: see ROI. The problem is I think so many players
- 10:37Speaker 5: have an overinflated value largely driven by their agents, but
- 10:41Speaker 5: largely driven by the fact so many players So many
- 10:44Speaker 5: metrics that we're measuring these players by are not what
- 10:47Speaker 5: works in the college football game because all you have
- 10:50Speaker 5: to do is go 90 miles to the west and
- 10:53Speaker 5: look at who Ed Orgeron said was the best recruit
- 10:57Speaker 5: he ever saw coming out of high school and please
- 11:00Speaker 5: tell me, justify Arch Manning's NIL contract for what you're
- 11:05Speaker 5: actually getting. I'm not saying he's a bad player. I'm
- 11:08Speaker 5: talking about the dollar value that he is commanding Largely
- 11:13Speaker 5: based on his name. Because when you look at his
- 11:15Speaker 5: passer rating and compare that to this year in college football,
- 11:19Speaker 5: I'm going to just throw some names at you. And
- 11:21Speaker 5: tell me if you think they are better or worse
- 11:24Speaker 5: than Arch Manning.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Okay.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Quarterback for Northwestern, Alden Childs.
- 11:31Speaker 7: Better. Better. Correct.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Let's see.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Ah.
- 11:40Speaker 5: Arkansas State, Trey Owens.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Just the fact that you said, I'm going to say better.
- 11:46Speaker 7: Better.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Former Texas A & M quarterback and currently quarterback for
- 11:51Speaker 5: the University of Houston, Connor Wegman.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Better.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Okay, again, this is not a dig at Marcel Reed.
- 11:56Speaker 4: No, it's not a dig at Marcel Reed. I am
- 11:58Speaker 4: just sick and tired of our quarterbacks going somewhere else
- 12:02Speaker 4: and getting better.
- 12:03Speaker 5: Last one.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Yep.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Oklahoma quarterback, John Mateer.
- 12:06Speaker 4: I already know he's better. John Mateer, yes.
- 12:07Speaker 5: I already know he's better. All have a higher passer
- 12:10Speaker 5: rating than Arch Manning. So, again, A & M is
- 12:17Speaker 5: one of, what, six schools that is probably fielding somewhere
- 12:21Speaker 5: between a $ 40 to a $ 50 million roster this year.
- 12:24Speaker 5: The ROI on that, as far as this year goes—
- 12:27Speaker 5: is going to be negative because we are not getting
- 12:30Speaker 5: the dollar return on that.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Nope.
- 12:31Speaker 5: You can make the same argument when you look at
- 12:33Speaker 5: some of the other universities, Oregon's in this category as well.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Texas may end up being in this category. I know
- 12:39Speaker 5: they have three ranked wins, but look at their two losses.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I mean, that can still play out in a different way,
- 12:47Speaker 5: but this is where I think the money ball aspect
- 12:50Speaker 5: is going to have to come into college football. If
- 12:51Speaker 5: you want to have true success, you've got to start
- 12:53Speaker 5: finding value and start signing appropriate, dollar amounts to these
- 12:58Speaker 5: players who can come together and actually play as a
- 13:00Speaker 5: team because fielding these all-star teams with the highest dollar
- 13:04Speaker 5: amount just because you can write the biggest check looking
- 13:07Speaker 5: at you cody campbell up there in lubbock you're not
- 13:09Speaker 5: going to have.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Success well and going back to the coaches for just
- 13:12Speaker 4: a second and how that's not being addressed in whatever
- 13:15Speaker 4: version of the save college sports act gets paid or
- 13:20Speaker 4: get gets passed or doesn't which i don't think it
- 13:22Speaker 4: will but like You talked about it perfectly when it
- 13:25Speaker 4: comes to the recruiting side of what college sports used
- 13:30Speaker 4: to be. And a coach was paid based on the
- 13:34Speaker 4: fact that he used to be able to evaluate, recruit,
- 13:38Speaker 4: and keep players there. And that was one of the
- 13:41Speaker 4: things that made a coach good. That doesn't matter anymore.
- 13:45Speaker 4: It's how much the, the, what your NIL budget is
- 13:47Speaker 4: going to be and who you can get and who
- 13:49Speaker 4: you can pay for. So why do coaches still think
- 13:53Speaker 4: that they can demand the salaries that they are getting
- 13:57Speaker 4: and the, the, the length of contracts that they are
- 14:01Speaker 4: getting when it's not, but again, for college sports, it
- 14:05Speaker 4: used to be, who can you go out and earn?
- 14:07Speaker 4: You should have to go to these kids, into these
- 14:10Speaker 4: kids' homes, talk to their parents and And get them
- 14:12Speaker 4: to want to commit to your school. Now it's about
- 14:15Speaker 4: how much money is my contract going to be. And
- 14:19Speaker 4: you go over there. So coaches aren't being asked of
- 14:22Speaker 4: the same thing that they used to.
- 14:24Speaker 5: No, I mean, and that's kind of another part of
- 14:27Speaker 5: the new college football metric. The mindset has got to
- 14:32Speaker 5: change in the fact of, Coaches are being evaluated truly
- 14:38Speaker 5: on their ability to coach and to have continued success.
- 14:42Speaker 5: Dave Bartu has the college football matrix and where he
- 14:46Speaker 5: has coaching effect. And I think that you're going to
- 14:49Speaker 5: have to develop some matrices to figure this out because, again,
- 14:53Speaker 5: simply just having a national championship in your back pocket, yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 5: I'm looking at you, Jimbo, and I'm looking at some
- 15:00Speaker 5: of these others, does not guarantee that you can repeat
- 15:02Speaker 5: that success everywhere you go. And so a lot of
- 15:08Speaker 5: these programs, you're going to have to have a quote-unquote
- 15:11Speaker 5: general manager or director of football operations who can handle
- 15:15Speaker 5: a lot of these negotiations and evaluations as far as
- 15:18Speaker 5: players and contracts and things go and then trust. But
- 15:21Speaker 5: your coaches are going to have– this is where I
- 15:24Speaker 5: think coaching, if you're talking about finding what their true
- 15:29Speaker 5: value is, is being able to do player evaluation– As
- 15:34Speaker 5: part of building out your team for the year. Because
- 15:37Speaker 5: that's what you're doing. You're basically, assume we do not
- 15:41Speaker 5: pass Save College Sports Act. Assume we will now, we'll
- 15:46Speaker 5: operate under the same things we're operating under right now.
- 15:50Speaker 5: You're basically building a team year to year.
- 15:52Speaker 4: You absolutely are.
- 15:53Speaker 5: And the only way you're going to retain those players
- 15:55Speaker 5: is basically if the NIL dollars stay and you have
- 15:58Speaker 5: winning success. Because otherwise they will go shopping for somewhere else.
- 16:03Speaker 5: which is why every year, and you see this in
- 16:06Speaker 5: college basketball, 75% of all players enter the transfer portal
- 16:10Speaker 5: as soon as the regular season's over.
- 16:11Speaker 4: As soon as it's done.
- 16:13Speaker 5: And actually, I think college football did the same thing
- 16:15Speaker 5: this last year. It was somewhere between 60% to 75%.
- 16:17Speaker 4: You're seeing what's out there.
- 16:19Speaker 5: But that's where a coach's true value is going to come.
- 16:24Speaker 5: And that's why it's like, okay, Penn State, you wanted
- 16:28Speaker 5: to get– Folks, I'm sorry. The brain just dies. It
- 16:36Speaker 5: dies when you're trying to make a point. Indiana head coach.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Cignetti.
- 16:39Speaker 5: Cignetti, thank you. You wanted Cignetti. You thought you could
- 16:43Speaker 5: get Cignetti out of Indiana, okay? You couldn't do it. Well,
- 16:46Speaker 5: where did Cignetti come from? JMU. Who took over for
- 16:51Speaker 5: JMU after he left? Currently the head coach at UCLA.
- 16:55Speaker 5: Who had the same coaching background as Cignetti. He coached
- 16:59Speaker 5: at all those small universities in the greater Pennsylvania and
- 17:02Speaker 5: Virginia area. But no, you decided we're going to go
- 17:06Speaker 5: after Iowa State's head coach because he's a P4 program
- 17:10Speaker 5: and he'll bring that here. Your evaluation was wrong. And
- 17:14Speaker 5: what happens next? you're looking at these middle and small universities. Well,
- 17:21Speaker 5: more importantly, these are the coaches who are, who, like
- 17:24Speaker 5: I say, are basically playing money ball. They can find
- 17:27Speaker 5: value and put together teams that actually work well together
- 17:31Speaker 5: to either be defensive powerhouses or be offensive powerhouses, or
- 17:36Speaker 5: hopefully do both. And once the big universities stop getting
- 17:41Speaker 5: to the, proverbial pissing match of who can spend the
- 17:44Speaker 5: most money and look more to coaches who can do
- 17:48Speaker 5: that well or get away from, I've got to hire
- 17:51Speaker 5: someone from the Saban tree or I've got to hire
- 17:53Speaker 5: someone from the Dabo tree, you know, whatever. Pass, I
- 17:57Speaker 5: just go back to the disclosure we have to say
- 18:00Speaker 5: in our business. Pass performance does not guarantee future results.
- 18:05Speaker 5: There's nothing more true than college football. Lincoln Riley should
- 18:10Speaker 5: be out of a job. But again, USC is going
- 18:15Speaker 5: to have to pay him estimated somewhere between $ 50 to
- 18:17Speaker 5: $ 72 million to get rid of him. He never was
- 18:21Speaker 5: an effective football coach, a complete football coach. He had
- 18:25Speaker 5: offensive success largely because of the quarterbacks. But man, you
- 18:29Speaker 5: look at USC, they've had the same problem for three years,
- 18:32Speaker 5: and he can't do anything to fix it.
- 18:35Speaker 6: Lincoln Riley's buyout is $ 70 million?
- 18:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 18:37Speaker 1: How would.
- 18:39Speaker 4: And that's the thing. And I'm sorry for USC for
- 18:43Speaker 4: having that level of a buyout. But I'm just like,
- 18:47Speaker 4: it goes back to the.
- 18:47Speaker 5: But they chose... That's the thing. It was like, this
- 18:49Speaker 5: is what they did. And I know the agents drive this.
- 18:53Speaker 5: And I know Jimmy Sexton at CCA, who represents, I believe,
- 18:57Speaker 5: all but one SEC football coach. And, of course, he
- 18:59Speaker 5: represents a number of top assistants and other coaches in
- 19:03Speaker 5: other conferences. He's the one who... pushes this because he
- 19:09Speaker 5: he showed he throws the threat it's like well if
- 19:11Speaker 5: you're not going to pay him someone else will and
- 19:14Speaker 5: so it once the universities start trying to take back
- 19:17Speaker 5: some of that prowess but i don't think they will
- 19:20Speaker 5: because again the business of college football is so great
- 19:26Speaker 5: the money is so great i mean it is billions
- 19:30Speaker 5: each and every year and that's why You have this
- 19:34Speaker 5: Protect College Sports Act being pushed because the universities don't–
- 19:40Speaker 5: they don't want to share any more of that money
- 19:43Speaker 5: than they absolutely have to.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Why you and you, you, I think you'll agree with
- 19:47Speaker 4: me that why universities do not or, or will not
- 19:52Speaker 4: get away from having someone like Sexton have the power
- 19:57Speaker 4: that he does. And I think this is what Jimmy
- 19:59Speaker 4: Sexton realizes is the, the fan base and the big,
- 20:04Speaker 4: big money donors for any university are, are scared to
- 20:08Speaker 4: death to lose the press conference when they hire whomever
- 20:14Speaker 4: their next coach is.
- 20:15Speaker 5: Well, and because they're writing the check, and again, I'm
- 20:18Speaker 5: going to take a dig at Cody Campbell, and I'm
- 20:21Speaker 5: hoping he gets plenty of egg on his face. You've
- 20:25Speaker 5: got this mentality when you are writing the big check
- 20:28Speaker 5: that this is your program. And for A & M,
- 20:31Speaker 5: that's been multiple times. People over the years.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Yes.
- 20:37Speaker 5: And I'm not naming names. I'm just going to simply
- 20:41Speaker 5: say this. If you want to know why A &
- 20:43Speaker 5: M is perpetually just stuck in the middle, it's because
- 20:49Speaker 5: the Dallas Ags and the Houston Ags take that same
- 20:54Speaker 5: mentality that they have about Dallas and Houston being adversarial,
- 21:00Speaker 5: and it permeates into our program.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Dallas Ags think they know everything. Houston Ags think they
- 21:07Speaker 5: know everything. And whoever has the most money to spend
- 21:12Speaker 5: in a given year, they kind of get their say.
- 21:14Speaker 5: And then it sways to the other way. And then occasionally,
- 21:17Speaker 5: sometimes the San Antonio Ags step up. But, you know,
- 21:20Speaker 5: it's hard to compete when you're talking about all that
- 21:23Speaker 5: oil and gas money. And, of course, oil being where
- 21:26Speaker 5: it is right now, guess what? We're going to have
- 21:29Speaker 5: guys who are going to be writing books Big old
- 21:31Speaker 5: checks for a while, and I just feel like if
- 21:35Speaker 5: you don't get someone who can rein that aspect in,
- 21:39Speaker 5: a la what Nick Saban was able to do with
- 21:42Speaker 5: the Alabama boosters, it's just going to perpetually be this
- 21:46Speaker 5: back and forth, and we're never going to take the
- 21:49Speaker 5: next step.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Nick Saban is the anomaly of all anomalies when it
- 21:53Speaker 4: comes to that, though, because again— He is who have
- 21:57Speaker 4: gotten all of these boosters to think that you can
- 22:00Speaker 4: have a program like Alabama was for his time there.
- 22:04Speaker 4: And there's not another program ever that is going to
- 22:08Speaker 4: be able to do what he did. But everybody thinks
- 22:12Speaker 4: you can.
- 22:12Speaker 5: Okay, I agree. And I agree with that. I'm not
- 22:14Speaker 5: saying you have to replicate what Saban did or replicate
- 22:19Speaker 5: how Saban behaved.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Okay.
- 22:22Speaker 5: I think you can be a very affable coach. But
- 22:26Speaker 5: get everyone on the same page. And B, you've got
- 22:30Speaker 5: to be persuasive and convincing. And I almost feel like
- 22:33Speaker 5: you've got to be the Elizabeth Holmes of coaching. I mean,
- 22:39Speaker 5: you've got to look these guys, and I'm being sexist here.
- 22:44Speaker 4: They're all guys. You know it.
- 22:46Speaker 5: You got to look them in the eye and say,
- 22:47Speaker 5: I will get us to the next level. But y'all
- 22:51Speaker 5: have to listen to what my plan is and believe
- 22:54Speaker 5: in what I'm doing. You can't be running your own
- 22:59Speaker 5: thing behind the scenes.
- 23:01Speaker 4: And that will happen. And I think that is going
- 23:03Speaker 4: to still be the detriment of college sports, specifically college football.
- 23:10Speaker 4: is that there is no– the NFL can do that
- 23:14Speaker 4: because at the end of the day, the owner has
- 23:16Speaker 4: the final say. In college sports, there is no single
- 23:21Speaker 4: person that has the final say.
- 23:23Speaker 5: But I think you're starting to see some of those
- 23:26Speaker 5: people try to emerge as that. And that's why I
- 23:28Speaker 5: keep bringing up Cody Campbell. I mean, he's tweeting after
- 23:33Speaker 5: the loss to Cincinnati– This is unacceptable. And he's tweeting
- 23:36Speaker 5: at Texas Tech football.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Right. But Texas Tech is a one-off situation also.
- 23:45Speaker 5: What I'm saying is, in this era of NIL, if
- 23:50Speaker 5: you're able to write these 9 and 10 figure checks
- 23:55Speaker 5: to basically provide the money for the program, you're going
- 24:00Speaker 5: to start seeing more of these guys... who just start thinking,
- 24:04Speaker 5: this is my program. And again, we go back to
- 24:10Speaker 5: what we say about ownership in general. Just because you
- 24:13Speaker 5: were blessed with success in some aspect of business or
- 24:17Speaker 5: in what is typically the reality, you were born on
- 24:22Speaker 5: third base, you did not hit a triple, does not
- 24:25Speaker 5: mean that God has also blessed you with the expertise
- 24:29Speaker 5: of building a sports program anymore. And unfortunately, if you
- 24:36Speaker 5: want to know what I'm more concerned about than anything
- 24:39Speaker 5: else in college football, it's this effect. It's the guys
- 24:44Speaker 5: who are going to be writing nine and ten figure
- 24:46Speaker 5: checks who start saying, I'm running this thing because I'm
- 24:50Speaker 5: the one who's paying for everything.
- 24:51Speaker 4: We are going to take a break. Come back here
- 24:54Speaker 4: in just a second. You're listening to Chip Howard Sports Talk,

- 25:28Speaker 1: He builds and renovates ponds and lakes. He manages private
- 25:33Speaker 1: lakes all over the Southwest, and they stock.
- 25:38Speaker 6: That's what they do.
- 25:39Speaker 1: They do electrofishing to find out, well, what is in
- 25:44Speaker 1: your pond. Hey, no wonder you haven't been catching anything.
- 25:48Speaker 5: It's empty.
- 25:49Speaker 1: If it's too muddy, he'll fix it. If it's got
- 25:51Speaker 1: too much vegetation, he'll fix it. If you need restocking,
- 25:55Speaker 1: they'll do that. If you want to build a place
- 25:58Speaker 1: on your property, they'll do that as well.
- 26:01Speaker 4: They do it all.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Well, not, you know, when it comes to lake and
- 26:05Speaker 1: pond management and resources.

- 27:20Speaker 10: Hi, I'm Peyton Holt. I'm running for College Station City Council,
- 27:24Speaker 10: Place 5. I'm a College Station attorney, small business owner,
- 27:27Speaker 10: and Pebble Creek resident. My career in business and real
- 27:30Speaker 10: estate law has taught me the importance of planning, accountability,
- 27:33Speaker 10: and getting things done. My first priority is simple. Public
- 27:37Speaker 10: safety comes first. I'm proud to be endorsed by the
- 27:40Speaker 10: College Station Police Officers Association and the College Station Firefighters.
- 27:45Speaker 10: As our city grows, we need intentional, disciplined leadership. That
- 27:48Speaker 10: means fixing roads, easing traffic, planning ahead for water drainage
- 27:53Speaker 10: and infrastructure. It means responsible budgets, holding the line on taxes,
- 27:57Speaker 10: demanding transparency for every taxpayer dollar, supporting local businesses, creating opportunities,
- 28:03Speaker 10: and cutting unnecessary red tape. Let's protect what makes College
- 28:06Speaker 10: Station special. while building a stronger future for our families

- 28:20Speaker 12: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 28:22Speaker 12: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around, and then
- 28:25Speaker 12: I found Schulte Roofing.
- 28:26Speaker 4: And boy, I'm glad I did.
- 28:27Speaker 12: The folks at Schulte guided me every step of the way.
- 28:30Speaker 12: They showed me my options. They told me what my
- 28:33Speaker 12: out-of-pocket cost would be after insurance. They took the complication
- 28:36Speaker 12: out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They took off
- 28:39Speaker 12: the damaged roof, put on the new roof, did all
- 28:41Speaker 12: the cleanup, and I had my new roof in one day.
- 28:44Speaker 13: Schulte!

- 30:19Speaker 4: Thursday afternoon. Big six slowing down. Yeah.
- 30:28Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 30:29Speaker 5: I mean, this is normal. Normally, when I'm having to
- 30:34Speaker 5: get Cameron to soccer practice, who she'll be joining us
- 30:37Speaker 5: in the final segment, it's slow in this stretch just
- 30:42Speaker 5: because of the time of day. All right, let's get
- 30:45Speaker 5: back on college football.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 30:46Speaker 5: Because when Chip texted, he was like, y'all still doing Thursday?
- 30:50Speaker 5: And I was like, God, yes. I mean, there's been
- 30:53Speaker 5: so much that's happened in the last two weeks that
- 30:55Speaker 5: we've got to talk about. And there was a reason
- 30:57Speaker 5: why I picked that song to play right then, not
- 31:00Speaker 5: just because this is the Halloween playlist for Chip Howard's
- 31:03Speaker 5: sports talk on the 7, 11, 50 AM, 93.7 FM,
- 31:06Speaker 5: but also because in the last two weeks, you've had
- 31:10Speaker 5: number one, number two, number five, number six, number 13,
- 31:13Speaker 5: number 16, and number 18 lose two weeks ago. And
- 31:16Speaker 5: then last week you had three, seven, eight, 11, 15, 16,
- 31:18Speaker 5: and I believe 14 lost as well. I mean, it
- 31:21Speaker 5: has been just.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Bedlam well and now i think we are seeing the
- 31:34Speaker 4: true nature of the transfer portal is because talent has
- 31:41Speaker 4: been dispersed through it's the same thing like what the
- 31:44Speaker 4: nfl wants they want parody the nfl wants everybody to
- 31:48Speaker 4: be which i guess is nine and eight now every
- 31:50Speaker 4: then they state they make the schedule that way for
- 31:52Speaker 4: They want everybody to be 9-8 every year.
- 31:54Speaker 5: I was going to say, basically, every NFL team should
- 31:57Speaker 5: be able to go 9-8.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Yes.
- 31:59Speaker 5: What differentiates you is coaching and basically strategy week to week.
- 32:08Speaker 5: And then the big one, and this is true for
- 32:10Speaker 5: college football, and this is kind of what we're seeing
- 32:12Speaker 5: right now, it's the grind because injuries are taking their toll.
- 32:18Speaker 4: On everybody.
- 32:18Speaker 5: I mean, we're getting cheated– We have been cheated out
- 32:23Speaker 5: of what could have been possibly the greatest Egg Bowl ever.
- 32:28Speaker 4: Because of it.
- 32:29Speaker 5: Because Kamara's out.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Because, I mean, yeah. And even if we take the,
- 32:33Speaker 4: and you were a thousand percent correct with what Jack Black,
- 32:39Speaker 4: the changes in conference alignment and just the awful... upscale
- 32:43Speaker 4: of realignment made things bad. But looking at where, like,
- 32:48Speaker 4: these teams now, again, Indiana, and I know we've talked
- 32:51Speaker 4: about this before, Indiana won the national championship. Like, when
- 32:54Speaker 4: could that have ever happened before? Never.
- 32:57Speaker 5: Worst team in college football.
- 32:59Speaker 4: And the transfer portal talent is spread out now. And
- 33:03Speaker 4: so you're not going to have, again, a Nick Saban
- 33:06Speaker 4: team that in his roster of 105, he's got five, 30,
- 33:11Speaker 4: a good friend of mine would always say, he's a
- 33:14Speaker 4: big Alabama fan, he would always say, whether it was
- 33:17Speaker 4: Derrick Henry or whoever the running back was, oh, we've
- 33:20Speaker 4: got a better one that's not even playing yet. Because
- 33:22Speaker 4: Nick Saban would have them all stockpiled. And you can't
- 33:25Speaker 4: do that anymore in this era. And so, yeah. As
- 33:29Speaker 4: you and I talk about all the time, one of
- 33:31Speaker 4: the things that comes up with that is you are
- 33:33Speaker 4: not going to be able to know anything before week
- 33:37Speaker 4: eight of what a team is because the talent is
- 33:40Speaker 4: so spread out that the polls mean literally nothing.
- 33:43Speaker 5: Again, I would just like to see the preseason polls
- 33:46Speaker 5: completely go away because all the AP voters are, so
- 33:52Speaker 5: many of the AP voters are just completely clueless.
- 33:55Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 33:55Speaker 5: They're looking at box scores, they're looking at the logo,
- 33:58Speaker 5: they're looking at the name, and they know nothing about
- 34:01Speaker 5: the teams. And then because of those preseason rankings, you
- 34:05Speaker 5: have this inherent bias that certain teams get to possess
- 34:09Speaker 5: early in the year that other teams don't get to have. Because, again,
- 34:13Speaker 5: coming into this year, Florida was unranked. They win one
- 34:19Speaker 5: game and they instantly jump into the teens, and then
- 34:23Speaker 5: they get beat again. But they don't drop out again.
- 34:25Speaker 4: No, they dropped all the way out.
- 34:27Speaker 5: No, they dropped out after two losses. That's my point.
- 34:31Speaker 5: It's like one win got them in, but it took
- 34:34Speaker 5: two losses to get them out.
- 34:36Speaker 4: And now they're back in.
- 34:37Speaker 5: And now they're back in.
- 34:37Speaker 4: And now they're back in.
- 34:38Speaker 5: And they might be good again. Okay, so let's look
- 34:41Speaker 5: at the schedule because, again, it's the bye week. You
- 34:43Speaker 5: don't have to.
- 34:44Speaker 4: You can enjoy Saturday.
- 34:46Speaker 5: You can enjoy Saturday. You can use the quad box
- 34:49Speaker 5: because you don't have to put the primary TV on
- 34:52Speaker 5: the A & M game. You can put it on...
- 34:54Speaker 5: You can put it on whatever you want. Multi-view is
- 34:55Speaker 5: your friend.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 34:57Speaker 5: Let's start in the SEC because I'm looking at this
- 35:01Speaker 5: Big Ten schedule, and oh my goodness, it's rough. All right,
- 35:06Speaker 5: Auburn-Ole Miss. Auburn got the big win over Georgia, but frankly,
- 35:09Speaker 5: I personally don't think that's any indication of how they're
- 35:12Speaker 5: going to do for the rest of the year.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Absolutely not. Ole Miss.
- 35:17Speaker 5: Has the potential to still do something special, but again,
- 35:21Speaker 5: They have no margin for error here on out. So, again,
- 35:25Speaker 5: early game, 11-45. But Trinidad Chambliss is something special. He is.
- 35:35Speaker 4: He will more than likely be the number one pick
- 35:39Speaker 4: in the draft.
- 35:40Speaker 5: I think he'll be the top quarterback. I have someone
- 35:43Speaker 5: else that I actually think will be the number one
- 35:45Speaker 5: pick overall and potential Heisman winner.
- 35:48Speaker 4: All right.
- 35:50Speaker 5: I'm not calling it by the corporate name. This is
- 35:53Speaker 5: going to be the largest.
- 35:53Speaker 4: The Gridiron Classic?
- 35:55Speaker 5: Brought to you by Invesco QQQ. No. This is the
- 35:59Speaker 5: largest indoor cocktail party in the world. Florida, Georgia being
- 36:03Speaker 5: played in the bins at 2.30 afternoon. Even with the
- 36:09Speaker 5: resurgent Florida. And their defense has been pretty good. I
- 36:14Speaker 5: think Georgia's had their hiccup for the year. So I
- 36:18Speaker 5: think Georgia wins. And I personally do not think it's
- 36:21Speaker 5: going to be close. No, that's– I know it's a
- 36:24Speaker 5: big rivalry.
- 36:25Speaker 4: Georgia's the better team.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:27Speaker 4: And as much– I mean, it's being played in Atlanta
- 36:31Speaker 4: at Mercedes. I mean, that is– it might as well
- 36:36Speaker 4: be Georgia's home stadium. It's Georgia's home stadium.
- 36:39Speaker 15: It is.
- 36:39Speaker 4: And no matter how many people from Gainesville think they
- 36:43Speaker 4: can drive up 45– 95.
- 36:47Speaker 7: 95.
- 36:47Speaker 4: To get up there, I'm still thinking I'm in Texas. Yeah,
- 36:50Speaker 4: that's a Georgia home game. All right.
- 36:52Speaker 5: You want ugly, I give you South Carolina-Oklahoma. I mean, this...
- 37:02Speaker 5: Who the heck knows? I mean, you've actually got two
- 37:08Speaker 5: good defenses. I'm not saying Carolina's defense is great, but,
- 37:12Speaker 5: I mean, against this Oklahoma offense, they're... They're pretty good. And, again,
- 37:22Speaker 5: I personally don't think they're going to fire. I don't
- 37:24Speaker 5: think they fire Shane Beamer. I mean, who are you
- 37:27Speaker 5: going to get? He likes it there. He's being moderately successful.
- 37:33Speaker 4: He's devoted to that school. He's devoted to that fan base.
- 37:37Speaker 4: What else are you going for?
- 37:39Speaker 5: I mean, you've tried Muschamp. You've tried other options. I
- 37:43Speaker 5: really don't think it gets much better than Shane Beamer
- 37:45Speaker 5: in the current environment. The game that looked like it
- 37:50Speaker 5: was going to be good, but like I said, without
- 37:54Speaker 5: Kamara there, Mississippi State, Texas, I mean, State may give
- 38:01Speaker 5: Texas a little bit of trouble. I know Texas lost
- 38:03Speaker 5: one of their big offensive linemen, their running game. Going
- 38:07Speaker 5: back to our conversation from the previous segment, if you
- 38:09Speaker 5: want to talk about NIL dollars not well spent, look
- 38:12Speaker 5: at Texas and what they tried to do to upgrade
- 38:14Speaker 5: their running game this year. That offensive line and the
- 38:18Speaker 5: running backs just have not paid off.
- 38:21Speaker 6: So, Jason has a question for y'all.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Okay.
- 38:24Speaker 8: He texted in saying, is the Auburn win comparable to
- 38:27Speaker 8: the winless NFL team winning against a 10-win team?
- 38:35Speaker 7: Ooh.
- 38:36Speaker 4: I would say no.
- 38:37Speaker 5: I would say no, too.
- 38:39Speaker 4: Only because... Well, I guess it would depend on who
- 38:42Speaker 4: the NFL teams are. Are they in the same division? Because, again, Auburn-Georgia,
- 38:48Speaker 4: that's a legit rivalry. It is a real game in Auburn.
- 38:52Speaker 5: And basically, that is an example of Kirby Kirby-ing. He
- 38:59Speaker 5: will do this.
- 39:00Speaker 6: Let's just say it's just the same conference. So, AFC
- 39:03Speaker 6: versus AFC.
- 39:04Speaker 4: Same conference, not same division, I would say no. Because, again,
- 39:08Speaker 4: there isn't that... level of hatred that Auburn has for...
- 39:15Speaker 4: It would be.
- 39:16Speaker 16: Other.
- 39:17Speaker 4: Than Alabama, I think Auburn hates Georgia the most.
- 39:21Speaker 5: If I could give an equivalent, this would be like
- 39:23Speaker 5: the Raiders from two years ago beating the Chiefs with
- 39:26Speaker 5: a healthy Mahomes and Travis Kelsey. it's like a random
- 39:31Speaker 5: game that's fair yeah and then in your night or
- 39:35Speaker 5: in your evening cap uh poor arkansas i just don't
- 39:40Speaker 5: seem doing much of anything against missouri all right let's let's.
- 39:45Speaker 4: Go to do we have to uh God.
- 39:49Speaker 5: I'm trying to see if there's one on here that
- 39:52Speaker 5: might be moderately interesting. But, I mean, other than Northwest.
- 39:56Speaker 4: Is that Wisconsin, Iowa? I'm just kidding. I'm so kidding.
- 39:59Speaker 6: Washington, Nebraska?
- 40:03Speaker 4: Where is Big Game Saturday at?
- 40:06Speaker 5: They, I would think they're.
- 40:10Speaker 4: Are they at Wisconsin, Iowa?
- 40:11Speaker 5: I would think so. Yeah, because that's the noon Fox game.
- 40:17Speaker 6: Yeah, they're in.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Iowa.
- 40:23Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 40:23Speaker 4: And here's the thing.
- 40:25Speaker 5: Again, CBS paid $ 350 million to broadcast just one of
- 40:31Speaker 5: these games per week.
- 40:33Speaker 4: And they've got the Minnesota-Indiana game. We're in college game day.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Yep.
- 40:41Speaker 5: Real quick, pull this up because this was interesting. Pull
- 40:44Speaker 5: up the over-under on Nevada-UCLA.
- 40:47Speaker 4: Here's my question, and it goes back to what we've
- 40:52Speaker 4: talked about before. Why does the Big Ten, other than.
- 40:58Speaker 4: The television revenue. Why do they need this many teams?
- 41:03Speaker 4: And why does it need, like, Michigan, but like, looking
- 41:06Speaker 4: at some of these games, why is Washington playing Nebraska?
- 41:10Speaker 4: As you said, like, I just don't understand. And because
- 41:13Speaker 4: of that, and maybe it's because I'm not a Big
- 41:15Speaker 4: Ten person and I don't live in Big Ten country,
- 41:18Speaker 4: but I'm like, none of these games are appealing.
- 41:22Speaker 5: No, they're not.
- 41:24Speaker 8: Yeah, I was very shocked whenever– because I'm a huge
- 41:26Speaker 8: college game day guy. I was very shocked when they
- 41:28Speaker 8: were like, yeah, we're going to go to Indiana for
- 41:30Speaker 8: Indiana versus Minnesota.
- 41:32Speaker 4: And that's just because they're throwing them a bone.
- 41:33Speaker 6: I mean, at that point, stay in the SEC.
- 41:36Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 41:36Speaker 5: Well, I mean– I do see the rationale because you
- 41:40Speaker 5: might see a situation where P.J. Fleck can actually get
- 41:43Speaker 5: a win in Bloomington. because this Indiana team is kind
- 41:48Speaker 5: of there on the precipice. I mean, yeah, they're going
- 41:51Speaker 5: to make the college football playoff. They'll come out of
- 41:53Speaker 5: the Big Ten, but they could easily get another loss
- 41:56Speaker 5: just because this is not the same Indiana team we
- 41:59Speaker 5: saw a year ago.
- 42:00Speaker 8: One more thing. I have the over-under poll for you.
- 42:03Speaker 8: So for the UCLA versus Nevada, the over-under opened at 48.5.
- 42:06Speaker 8: It is currently 44.5, and UCLA is favored by 22.5.
- 42:09Speaker 5: Yes, thank you.
- 42:10Speaker 6: That's what I was.
- 42:15Speaker 4: And again, going back to.
- 42:17Speaker 5: They're basically getting a SoCon game.
- 42:20Speaker 4: But basically, also going back to the business, why does
- 42:24Speaker 4: ESPN care about the Big Ten?
- 42:30Speaker 5: If you're trying to be democratic, and especially... And I
- 42:33Speaker 5: know that's what they try to do with Game Day.
- 42:36Speaker 4: They try to do that, but they're not broadcasting a
- 42:39Speaker 4: single Big Ten game.
- 42:40Speaker 7: No, no.
- 42:41Speaker 4: They don't care if the Big Ten makes it into
- 42:44Speaker 4: any playoff game.
- 42:45Speaker 5: I don't know. Maybe, you know, yeah, I know we're
- 42:48Speaker 5: coming up against the clock. I'll just make this joke
- 42:50Speaker 5: real quick. Maybe Pat's feelings are like he feels safer
- 42:53Speaker 5: in Bloomington. He needs a comfy blanket this week.
- 42:57Speaker 4: He needed to get off the West Coast is what
- 42:59Speaker 4: he needed because they were not liking him over here.
- 43:01Speaker 4: We're going to take a break, come back. I guess
- 43:04Speaker 4: we might try to take, we're going to talk entertainment
- 43:06Speaker 4: to wrap up the show here.
- 43:08Speaker 5: We'll figure out something.
- 43:09Speaker 4: You're listening to Chip Hour Sports Talk, taken over by
- 43:11Speaker 4: Jason and Jared. Sports Radio 1150 AM, The Zone, 93.7 FM.
- 43:14Speaker 12: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 43:16Speaker 12: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around, and then
- 43:19Speaker 12: I found Schulte Roofing, and boy, I'm glad I did.
- 43:21Speaker 12: The folks at Schulte guided me every step of the way.
- 43:24Speaker 12: They showed me my options. They told me what my
- 43:26Speaker 12: out-of-pocket cost would be after insurance. They took the complication
- 43:30Speaker 12: out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They took off
- 43:33Speaker 12: the damaged roof, put on the new roof, did all
- 43:35Speaker 12: the cleanup, and I had my new roof in one day.
- 43:41Speaker 6: The home of the bulletproof, bulletproof.
- 43:46Speaker 13: Following week three of the season, Dallas Cowboys owner and
- 43:49Speaker 13: general manager Jerry Jones made a trade acquiring quarterback Joey
- 43:51Speaker 13: Porter Jr.
- 43:52Speaker 4: From the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 43:54Speaker 13: Since then, Porter has been all that and more for Dallas,
- 43:56Speaker 13: allowing just 10 yards on two receptions with nine targets
- 43:59Speaker 13: and three pass deflections in his three games. Yesterday, Jones
- 44:02Speaker 13: was asked about the trade and if it has paid off.
- 44:05Speaker 7: Well, you saw him make that knockdown on that sideline.
- 44:09Speaker 7: He is a, we call a very common term, shutdown corner.
- 44:17Speaker 7: He's got it, boy. He's got the physical skills, and
- 44:21Speaker 7: he's got the ability to do everything you want to have.
- 44:25Speaker 7: And he's the kind of corner that ultimately they don't
- 44:28Speaker 7: want to go to that side. And when you get
- 44:31Speaker 7: one of those, that's everybody's dream. Then you can really
- 44:36Speaker 7: play another way of aligning your defense and counting on
- 44:41Speaker 7: your defense.
- 44:42Speaker 13: Kevin Walker, TSN Sports.
- 44:44Speaker 17: I was going to pay the IRS eventually, but we
- 44:46Speaker 17: had to have enough to live on. Now, the IRS

- 46:50Speaker 16: Ghostbusters!
- 46:51Speaker 10: Ghostbusters!
- 46:52Speaker 4: If there's something weird and it don't look good, who
- 46:56Speaker 4: you gonna call?
- 46:58Speaker 5: Ghostbusters!
- 46:59Speaker 4: There we go. Jim Powers Sports Talk, taken over by
- 47:05Speaker 4: Jason and Jared.
- 47:07Speaker 5: I want a new drug.
- 47:09Speaker 4: Something that'll make me sick. Sports Radio 1158 in the Zone, 93.7 FM. Obviously,
- 47:18Speaker 4: Halloween coming up this weekend. Time change coming up this weekend.
- 47:22Speaker 5: What are the kiddos going as this year?
- 47:25Speaker 4: I forget what Wesley said he was going to do. Logan,
- 47:29Speaker 4: she's got one of the big fan blow-up things.
- 47:33Speaker 6: Like the dinosaurs?
- 47:35Speaker 4: But it's like the dinosaurs. It's not a dinosaur, but
- 47:37Speaker 4: it's one of those.
- 47:37Speaker 13: Brayden is a....
- 47:42Speaker 4: Not a Viking. Dadgummit. What was he?
- 47:44Speaker 5: Erling Haaland?
- 47:48Speaker 7: Close.
- 47:48Speaker 4: Close. He is a gladiator. That's the word I was
- 47:52Speaker 4: looking for. He's a gladiator. And so, yeah. How about you, ma'am?
- 47:56Speaker 5: We are joined by Miss Cameron. She is probably going
- 48:03Speaker 5: to be cast as your sassy neighbor in some sitcom
- 48:07Speaker 5: when she gets a little bit older. But Cameron... Please
- 48:11Speaker 5: tell the listening audience, who are you going as for Halloween?
- 48:15Speaker 17: I'm going as Max Mayfield from Stranger Things.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 48:20Speaker 5: And a pretty convincing costume.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Oh, right.
- 48:23Speaker 5: Like, we found 80s jorts, you know? We found a
- 48:31Speaker 5: perfectly striped shirt like she wore and a red wig
- 48:34Speaker 5: that I have to say, as my little... Female Erling
- 48:39Speaker 5: Haaland blonde girl. She actually pulls off the red hair
- 48:42Speaker 5: pretty well.
- 48:43Speaker 7: Very good.
- 48:43Speaker 8: Is she going to walk around with the headphones and
- 48:45Speaker 8: a cassette tape?
- 48:47Speaker 5: We have a Bluetooth speaker that will just kind of
- 48:52Speaker 5: put on a constant loop of Kate Bush's running up
- 48:54Speaker 5: that hill. I did at some point still have my
- 49:00Speaker 5: Sony headphones with the foam on the side, but Walkman
- 49:07Speaker 5: and Dick Disc men's have long been trash.
- 49:12Speaker 4: Yeah, they don't work anymore going on. And so looking out,
- 49:16Speaker 4: and the only reason why I was saying like halloween's
- 49:18Speaker 4: this weekend obviously that's going to be very exciting time
- 49:22Speaker 4: change is this weekend and i hate that it's going
- 49:25Speaker 4: to be getting dark at 3 30 in the afternoon
- 49:28Speaker 4: here and you it's just that what.
- 49:33Speaker 8: It's at November.
- 49:35Speaker 4: 1st at 2 a.m.
- 49:35Speaker 5: Again, your sassy neighbor.
- 49:37Speaker 4: You're telling me exactly what to think.
- 49:42Speaker 5: So I made the joke on Facebook that with the
- 49:46Speaker 5: extra hour, Ann's going to make me go ahead and
- 49:48Speaker 5: start getting down the Christmas decorations from the attic on Sunday.
- 49:51Speaker 4: That is going to start. And I will tell people,
- 49:54Speaker 4: because this is a huge, like, after Halloween, there is
- 49:58Speaker 4: a whole... other holiday.
- 50:01Speaker 5: Yes.
- 50:02Speaker 4: In between.
- 50:02Speaker 6: I was actually about to ask that. When do y'all
- 50:05Speaker 6: start setting up for Christmas?
- 50:06Speaker 5: A lot of it is dependent on if we're hosting Thanksgiving,
- 50:11Speaker 5: which we typically do. Yes, we are. Thank you.
- 50:14Speaker 7: Oh, gosh.
- 50:15Speaker 4: She's like, I'm telling you, like, if, okay.
- 50:19Speaker 5: I appreciate the responses. You've got to get closer to
- 50:22Speaker 5: the mic. Into the mic. There you go. When you're
- 50:24Speaker 5: ready to talk, just right into the mic.
- 50:25Speaker 4: Okay. Now she doesn't want to talk. Now she's like.
- 50:28Speaker 5: No, she's fine.
- 50:30Speaker 18: Called her out.
- 50:34Speaker 5: But, so, like, last year... Last year, we got the
- 50:38Speaker 5: Christmas decor up early because you didn't have that extra
- 50:42Speaker 5: week after Thanksgiving like you normally do. And so, because...
- 50:47Speaker 5: christmas was compressed it's like we want to go ahead
- 50:49Speaker 5: and get some of it up so it's up i
- 50:51Speaker 5: think this year um probably be a little more like
- 50:56Speaker 5: get some up but like maybe not certain things up
- 51:00Speaker 5: just yet uh i mean i i have to say
- 51:06Speaker 5: it's kind of hard to get into the fall spirit
- 51:10Speaker 5: When it's still 80 to 90 degrees outside.
- 51:13Speaker 4: It is the end of October, and this is the first,
- 51:17Speaker 4: I guess, full week that we've only been in the 80s.
- 51:20Speaker 4: And that's cool.
- 51:21Speaker 5: Friday night was extraordinarily pleasant out at Tiger Land Stadium.
- 51:26Speaker 4: Or Tiger Field. Tiger Field and Tiger Land Stadium.
- 51:29Speaker 8: I agree because there was a couple of days, like
- 51:32Speaker 8: a week ago, where it was like 65.
- 51:35Speaker 6: Yeah. 67 and maybe 70 degrees. I was like, oh
- 51:38Speaker 6: my gosh.
- 51:38Speaker 5: More so the mornings. The mornings are in the 40s
- 51:41Speaker 5: and the 50s.
- 51:41Speaker 4: Sorry, she, Cameron got you. She's like, 67.
- 51:45Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 51:47Speaker 5: But that's kind of the difficulty now, I believe, looking
- 51:51Speaker 5: at the forecast. I think we are about to get
- 51:53Speaker 5: another front that kind of coincides with the time change. So, Yes,
- 51:56Speaker 5: it will be getting darker early, and it's going to
- 51:58Speaker 5: start feeling colder earlier. But I'm kind of the person
- 52:05Speaker 5: that's like, once Halloween's over, yes, there is another holiday.
- 52:08Speaker 5: A whole other holiday. If you have some fall decor, great.
- 52:11Speaker 5: If not, let's go ahead and start getting the Christmas
- 52:14Speaker 5: stuff at least up in the house. Like, I'm all
- 52:19Speaker 5: for if you get your lights put on the house early.
- 52:22Speaker 5: I understand the savings.
- 52:24Speaker 7: I don't.
- 52:26Speaker 5: I'm doing it this year. I ain't turning those things
- 52:28Speaker 5: on until December 1st.
- 52:29Speaker 4: Okay. Once December 1st hits, I'm good with everything. It's just...
- 52:35Speaker 4: Here's the part, and I say this at work when
- 52:37Speaker 4: they're like, can we start playing Christmas? I don't want
- 52:40Speaker 4: to be sick of Christmas before we get to Christmas.
- 52:44Speaker 6: Christmas is one.
- 52:45Speaker 4: Day, not 45. No, she's not. Leave her alone. Leave
- 52:50Speaker 4: her in her... You know what's so funny about Christmas....
- 52:54Speaker 8: About Christmas decorations. I have somebody in my neighborhood who's
- 52:58Speaker 8: already putting up their Christmas lights.
- 53:00Speaker 4: If you love it that much, I don't want to
- 53:02Speaker 4: be sick of Christmas before we get to Christmas.
- 53:07Speaker 5: I agree with that. There is a house in our
- 53:11Speaker 5: neighborhood that actually has some pretty nice Halloween decorations out,
- 53:16Speaker 5: but they also got their Christmas lights put on their
- 53:18Speaker 5: house and they're on a timer so every night you
- 53:21Speaker 5: got the Halloween light lit up stuff in the, in
- 53:24Speaker 5: the front yard. And then you got your Christmas lights
- 53:27Speaker 5: on the house already lit up too.
- 53:28Speaker 4: And it's just like pick one. Yep. I want to
- 53:31Speaker 4: make sure that we won't be honest. I want to
- 53:33Speaker 4: end on a tribute. Do you still have the clip
- 53:35Speaker 4: pulled up? Yes, I do. I want to make sure
- 53:38Speaker 4: that we end on a tribute of.
- 53:41Speaker 5: Again, if you want to talk about like for me personally, cause, um,
- 53:48Speaker 5: first contact is, is my favorite Star Trek movie period
- 53:52Speaker 5: out of all of them. But it was truly this
- 53:55Speaker 5: scene where I was like, dang, Patrick Stewart can just
- 54:00Speaker 5: bring it. And it doesn't feel manufactured. It feels authentic.
- 54:05Speaker 5: So if you've ever seen First Contact, you know the
- 54:08Speaker 5: scene I'm talking about. But let's play what I feel
- 54:12Speaker 5: like might be Patrick Stewart's zenith as Captain Jean Picard.
- 54:20Speaker 15: I will not sacrifice the Enterprise. We've made too many
- 54:25Speaker 15: compromises already. Too many retreats. They invade our space and
- 54:31Speaker 15: we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back.
- 54:37Speaker 15: Not again.
- 54:38Speaker 4: The line must be drawn here. This far, no farther.
- 54:44Speaker 4: And I will make them pay for what they've done.
- 54:51Speaker 4: That is just.
- 54:53Speaker 5: I mean, that's why he got cast as Captain Ahab
- 54:56Speaker 5: in Moby Dick. Just Sir Patrick Stewart, 86 years old.
- 55:03Speaker 4: That is the end of our Thursday here, sir.
- 55:06Speaker 5: It is the fastest two hours in sports radio.
- 55:08Speaker 4: It absolutely is.
- 55:09Speaker 5: And I told Chip, I was like, we got three
- 55:11Speaker 5: hours of stuff to talk about, and we're going to
- 55:12Speaker 5: have to figure out how to cram it into two hours.
- 55:14Speaker 4: We hope everybody has a wonderful Friday. If you've got
- 55:18Speaker 4: nothing going on tomorrow, shameless plug for me, A &
- 55:21Speaker 4: M Consolidated is taking on the Killeen Kangaroos. The Kangaroos
- 55:26Speaker 4: pregame show starts at 630 with Tapp and I, WTAW 1620.
- 55:31Speaker 5: What time is your soccer game on Saturday?
- 55:33Speaker 4: Saturday.
- 55:34Speaker 5: You play at one. It's the top two teams in
- 55:39Speaker 5: the flight playing each other.
- 55:40Speaker 7: Oh. Yes.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. Chipmunk Sports Talk taken over by Jason and Jared.
- 55:46Speaker 4: You've been listening to us on Sports Radio 1150 AM
- 55:49Speaker 4: The Zone, 93.7 FM.
- 55:51Speaker 1: Hey, I talked to my friend Bubba Dixon today.
