- 0:02Speaker 1: Well, one of the best parts to do in this
- 0:03Speaker 1: show is that every so often the perfect guest just
- 0:06Speaker 1: happens to walk in through the door. And that's what
- 0:09Speaker 1: happened today. You're listening to Home and Progress by Repcolite Paints,
- 0:13Speaker 1: sponsored by Benjamin Moore, and my guest today. He's recently
- 0:17Speaker 1: bought an old house, his first one, and he's been
- 0:20Speaker 1: fixing it up. He's painted rooms, his first rooms. He's
- 0:23Speaker 1: painted cabinets, things like that, cleaned out crawl spaces. He's
- 0:27Speaker 1: dealt with a few things living under his entryway that
- 0:29Speaker 1: I'll let him tell you about. And he came into
- 0:32Speaker 1: all of it with a ton of skills, but none
- 0:35Speaker 1: of those skills were even remotely connected to painting for work.
- 0:39Speaker 1: He's an electrician and he's been doing that for a
- 0:42Speaker 1: while now. I can't remember how long. He'll tell me
- 0:45Speaker 1: in a minute, handles things every day that really freaked
- 0:48Speaker 1: me out. You know, that's what he does all day long,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and yet painting made him nervous. Anyway, Today's going to
- 0:54Speaker 1: be a lot of fun because I've known this guy
- 0:56Speaker 1: for my entire life, because he's my kid. I've talked
- 0:59Speaker 1: about it on the show for years and years and years,
- 1:02Speaker 1: but this is his first time here. I think, Caleb,
- 1:05Speaker 1: thanks for being here, Thanks for having me Dad. This
- 1:07Speaker 1: is your first time, right it is.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Yeah, we've talked about for a while.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yeah, talked about having you come on. Are you nervous
- 1:12Speaker 1: about it?
- 1:13Speaker 2: No? Not really.
- 1:14Speaker 1: No, you didn't know you were going to do that?
- 1:15Speaker 2: No, no, no, I just came here to pick up
- 1:17Speaker 2: some primer.
- 1:17Speaker 1: So yeah, I thought, hey, this might be really good.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna put them on the radio. How long have
- 1:23Speaker 1: you been an electrician?
- 1:25Speaker 2: Probably about six years coming up here?
- 1:27Speaker 1: Pretty sor right, all right, so I been doing that
- 1:30Speaker 1: for a while. Feel really comfortable with it. We'll get
- 1:32Speaker 1: to that later. Let's start with your house. Tell her
- 1:36Speaker 1: everybody about it a little bit, and I guess what
- 1:38Speaker 1: I'm looking for is just what did it look like?
- 1:41Speaker 1: You know, what was it like that first day? You know,
- 1:43Speaker 1: day one, you walk in, you know, what what did
- 1:47Speaker 1: you encounter? What was it?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Well, I mean it's older. I said, it was built
- 1:51Speaker 2: in early nineteen o one, which kind of means they
- 1:54Speaker 2: don't really know.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I was very surprised that the one good one of
- 1:59Speaker 2: the good things about it was all the electrical had
- 2:01Speaker 2: already been updated. So I was very happy about that, because.
- 2:04Speaker 1: We're happy about that. That was you could have handled easily.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I could have, but it would have been a lot
- 2:08Speaker 2: very expensive. Stuff is not cheap right now in the
- 2:10Speaker 2: electrical field. And then yeah, we had a bright pink
- 2:14Speaker 2: dining room that on when we were looking online, looked
- 2:18Speaker 2: more like a sunset, kind of like an oranger pink.
- 2:21Speaker 2: And it was bright, bright, Barbie pink.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It was really crazy. Yes, that pink. I forgot about
- 2:26Speaker 1: that pink on all the pictures. It was a nice pink.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Think I wanted to put pink in my house. Oh yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 1: And we walked in and it looked like pepto bismol. Oh.
- 2:37Speaker 2: It was the brightest Barbie pink that you could think.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And it was just it's the first room right when
- 2:41Speaker 2: you walk in the dining room, kind of leading to
- 2:43Speaker 2: all the other rooms. You're like, man, just hurts your brain.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, it did, it did.
- 2:48Speaker 2: So we we had we had to decide what we
- 2:50Speaker 2: were going to do with that. That was gonna be
- 2:52Speaker 2: one of the first rooms that we tackled.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Was that the worst thing that you found in the house,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I mean, was that the worst thing that you encountered
- 2:59Speaker 1: or were there you had smells?
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, there was.
- 3:02Speaker 1: How do you rate the pink versus the smells?
- 3:04Speaker 2: Honestly, the pink was not my biggest concern. Okay, it
- 3:08Speaker 2: was when you walked in you could definitely tell that
- 3:10Speaker 2: there had been multiple cats in there for a couple
- 3:13Speaker 2: of years.
- 3:13Speaker 1: How many cats had been in there? Do you know?
- 3:15Speaker 2: Probably four? Three or four? I know I saw three,
- 3:17Speaker 2: but there was a rumored fourth.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And you've got a dirt crawl space, yep.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I have a little small partial basement with a crawl
- 3:26Speaker 2: space that extends to the outsides of the house, and
- 3:30Speaker 2: that had become the cat's litter box for probably three
- 3:33Speaker 2: or four years.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, And it literally is a crawl space. I
- 3:37Speaker 1: know's it's probably less than a crawl space. It starts
- 3:40Speaker 1: out about to fully crawl through the crawl so.
- 3:43Speaker 2: You start out about two foot and then once you
- 3:45Speaker 2: get closer to the outside of the house, it's going
- 3:47Speaker 2: down about six to eight inches.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So now the smell in the house. You know, I'd
- 3:52Speaker 1: done a fair amount of spots on the show and
- 3:55Speaker 1: on the different radio stuff that I do and on
- 3:57Speaker 1: our social media about dealing with cat smells. And dealing.
- 4:00Speaker 1: In fact, I'm doing a whole series that I've been
- 4:02Speaker 1: working through on smells in houses, and it's all because
- 4:06Speaker 1: of your house.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I'm glad I could help to me.
- 4:10Speaker 1: To me, that was so depressing. I didn't know that
- 4:12Speaker 1: you were ever going to get that style out.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, after I cleaned it the first day, clean the house,
- 4:19Speaker 2: clean the crawl space. That was the first thing I told.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Him about that, because you got how did you go
- 4:24Speaker 1: about that?
- 4:25Speaker 2: So I did a bunch of research and I asked
- 4:27Speaker 2: my future mother in law. I asked my dad. I
- 4:29Speaker 2: asked my mom because they'd all had animals growing up,
- 4:33Speaker 2: so they kind of knew what to look for. And
- 4:36Speaker 2: my future mother in law told me that I needed
- 4:38Speaker 2: to get ensmatic cleaner. I had never heard of that before.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So I did a bunch of research and I ended
- 4:44Speaker 2: up buying without paying attention. The first one I bought
- 4:47Speaker 2: was a big jug, probably gallon jug of outdoor ensomatic cleaner.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Wasn't the biggest deal. I thought it would work, and
- 4:56Speaker 2: I went through about half of that after I got
- 4:58Speaker 2: some of the crawl space cleaned out, and that was
- 5:01Speaker 2: a whole fiasco. I got went and got a whole
- 5:03Speaker 2: painter suit. I got a mask with the respirators.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I got glove goggles and and your favorite thing that
- 5:10Speaker 1: you bought.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Oh, I love it. It's a little fourth about four
- 5:13Speaker 2: foot maybe three foot and a half, little kids rake
- 5:17Speaker 2: and for for a gardening rake. So it's got metal ends.
- 5:20Speaker 2: It's got about four prongs on it.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I was.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I was so happy with that little It.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Was so crazy because you called me, you came out
- 5:27Speaker 1: of the crawl space, and I was just concerned about
- 5:30Speaker 1: the whole thing. You know, you get your suit, you've
- 5:32Speaker 1: got all your safety gear on, but all you can
- 5:34Speaker 1: talk about was your little rake. You use it everywhere
- 5:38Speaker 1: else in the house. You're gonna use that outside and
- 5:40Speaker 1: use it.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I still got that. That's got a place of honor
- 5:42Speaker 2: in the basement. I make sure it stays on a
- 5:44Speaker 2: shelf above where if anything happened water leakage, it'd be
- 5:48Speaker 2: fine for years. And that's gonna be an heirloom of
- 5:51Speaker 2: my family.
- 5:52Speaker 1: There's ever a fire, you're grabbing the rake before you Oh,
- 5:54Speaker 1: the rake's probably getting grabbed before my fishing poles. Yeah,
- 5:58Speaker 1: so you got the crawl space raked out. Yeah, I
- 6:01Speaker 1: got this ensmatic cleaner. What was the Uh.
- 6:04Speaker 2: It was a fiasco because the outdoor one, it was
- 6:09Speaker 2: kind of hard to tell if it was really working,
- 6:11Speaker 2: and I couldn't and it didn't really seem to be
- 6:13Speaker 2: covered up the smell. So I went to a store
- 6:15Speaker 2: nearby and found that they had a cat like a
- 6:21Speaker 2: special cat formula asthmatic cleaner, but they didn't have a
- 6:25Speaker 2: big jug. So I ended up buying probably about eight
- 6:27Speaker 2: small little spray bottles that I dumped into a pressure
- 6:31Speaker 2: ized spreader.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Okay, did that finally do it?
- 6:34Speaker 2: After the eight? Yeah? Yeah, it's is it gone now?
- 6:38Speaker 2: I would say it's gone. I would say the cat
- 6:40Speaker 2: smell is gone. It is more now just musty basement
- 6:44Speaker 2: smell sometimes.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Now we've got so much humidity and you got a humidifier.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I didn't get a humidfier.
- 6:49Speaker 1: That removed a pair amount of smell from that.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that got rid of a lot, because now when
- 6:53Speaker 2: when you open the door, you don't get hit with
- 6:55Speaker 2: the just Michigan basement smell. You kind of just get
- 6:57Speaker 2: hit with the stone basement dirt. It's just kind of
- 7:00Speaker 2: a normal smell there.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so you had that cat stuff to
- 7:04Speaker 1: deal with. There was one other spot you had a
- 7:06Speaker 1: little little closet area where there was yeah, there was
- 7:10Speaker 1: you thought the cats went to the bathroom.
- 7:12Speaker 2: There was a little there's a little alcove by the stairs,
- 7:15Speaker 2: and previous homeowner had just put that foam gym floor,
- 7:22Speaker 2: and I think the cats must have been going to
- 7:24Speaker 2: the bathroom on that because it must have just soaked through.
- 7:26Speaker 2: So I cleaned that up real good, and I put
- 7:30Speaker 2: some oil based You gave me.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Some stuff pot of your thing. We went with a
- 7:34Speaker 1: clear coat because a clearcoat, you know, there are other
- 7:36Speaker 1: products that will cover a smell or block of smell
- 7:39Speaker 1: bin primer. It's a shellac. It's a white pigmented sillac,
- 7:43Speaker 1: but anything with pigments potentially can allow parts of that
- 7:47Speaker 1: smell to come through. A clear coat is going to
- 7:50Speaker 1: seal it really, really well. And I would have gone
- 7:54Speaker 1: with a shellac. That would have been the ideal. Drives
- 7:56Speaker 1: really fast. You was just a clear shallac. But I
- 7:58Speaker 1: didn't have any sitting around here. I I did have
- 8:01Speaker 1: some old Bolli era thing that I had the test
- 8:03Speaker 1: to make because it was old. I had the test
- 8:05Speaker 1: it make sure that it was still going to dry
- 8:07Speaker 1: because it had been sitting in a half full can
- 8:09Speaker 1: for probably two or three years. But I decided it
- 8:12Speaker 1: would drive fast enough for what you needed, and that
- 8:14Speaker 1: sealed it in. Then you can you put florine over.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I put some new subfloor, and then I put some
- 8:19Speaker 2: more of that poly you were thing on it, just
- 8:20Speaker 2: to seal up all the cracks.
- 8:23Speaker 1: One more funny thing in the house. You were calling
- 8:28Speaker 1: me because you were working in your entryway. Mm you had.
- 8:32Speaker 1: In fact, let's take a break a minute because I
- 8:33Speaker 1: want to get to this story and then we'll get
- 8:35Speaker 1: to some of the painting stuff that you tackled and
- 8:38Speaker 1: all of that. But this story is going to take
- 8:40Speaker 1: too long because it's a good one.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Oh it's very good.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So we're going to take a break. We're going to
- 8:44Speaker 1: get to more of Caleb's house experience, and then who
- 8:47Speaker 1: knows where we're going to go after that, but we're
- 8:49Speaker 1: going to do that right after. This home in progress
- 8:53Speaker 1: is brought to you by repcole Like Paints and Benjamin Moore.
- 8:55Speaker 1: You know, people often think of paint as just another
- 8:58Speaker 1: line item on the projects supply list. But here's the thing.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Everything you do, every hour of prep, every stroke of
- 9:04Speaker 1: the brush, all comes down to the quality of the paint.
- 9:06Speaker 1: The paint is the project. Make sure it's the best.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And we'rebecca. You're listening to Home in Progress by Repcolite Paint,
- 9:13Speaker 1: sponsored by Benjamin Moore, and I'm in the studio with
- 9:16Speaker 1: my son Caleb. We're talking about a new house that
- 9:19Speaker 1: he bought. It's not new, it's old, nineteen oh one
- 9:22Speaker 1: or something new to Caleb, and we talked about some
- 9:25Speaker 1: of the things he was dealing with, and at the
- 9:27Speaker 1: end of the last segment, I started to bring up
- 9:30Speaker 1: probably the epic, the most epic part of your new
- 9:34Speaker 1: home buying experience. But Caleb had a squirrel living above.
- 9:38Speaker 2: His end in the breezeway ceiling, and we.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Caught that with the home inspection and stuff, and that
- 9:45Speaker 1: entry stunk. Oh, it was bad that one. Oh my goodness,
- 9:48Speaker 1: the smell coming out of that was something else. And
- 9:51Speaker 1: I didn't know if that would ever be good again either.
- 9:54Speaker 1: But you got somebody out there to get the squirrel out,
- 9:58Speaker 1: you know. He took care of that, sealed the whole
- 10:00Speaker 1: after the squirrel was out, and then at one point
- 10:02Speaker 1: you were going to pull the ceiling down and just
- 10:05Speaker 1: explore what the squirrel had done up there. And I
- 10:09Speaker 1: was very eager for that, but I was very eager
- 10:11Speaker 1: to not be there. Yeah, oh yeah, I didn't want
- 10:13Speaker 1: to be there for that. And anyway, you called me,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and because I had come, I think like the day
- 10:20Speaker 1: or two before you pulled this apart, because Andrew, your brother,
- 10:25Speaker 1: help me paint. He was helping paint, and I came
- 10:27Speaker 1: to see what he's doing, because Caleb's house is literally
- 10:29Speaker 1: just a block and a half from where I work. Uh,
- 10:32Speaker 1: And I walked in and oh my goodness, it was
- 10:34Speaker 1: a dead smell, which again spawned the entire dealing with
- 10:38Speaker 1: smells at your house series that I've been on. And anyway,
- 10:42Speaker 1: I was thinking, I was scared to death that they
- 10:44Speaker 1: had sealed squirrels in your attic, you know, in that area.
- 10:48Speaker 1: That's all I could think it was. So I was
- 10:50Speaker 1: very eager to hear what happened when you pull the
- 10:52Speaker 1: ceiling down. So you pull it down, you're on the
- 10:54Speaker 1: phone with me, there's nothing up there. And then I
- 10:57Speaker 1: think we got off the phone and you were started
- 11:00Speaker 1: tell me about the rest of that, because you were
- 11:02Speaker 1: called me back.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I probably called you back about ten minutes. I
- 11:05Speaker 2: got the ceiling ripped down, I got all the old
- 11:09Speaker 2: whatever was in there from the squirrel. I got that
- 11:11Speaker 2: all put in trash bags thrown away, and it was gross,
- 11:14Speaker 2: but it was but it wasn't terrible. I didn't find
- 11:16Speaker 2: any dead things in the ceiling. I had to redoce
- 11:18Speaker 2: some wiring, but that that wasn't that big of a deal.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And then I decided which hold on, hold on, because
- 11:23Speaker 1: that is worth talking about a minute. The squirrel had
- 11:25Speaker 1: done some pretty serious Oh.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he had done some pretty significant damage to two
- 11:29Speaker 2: sets of wires coming out of the inside of the house,
- 11:32Speaker 2: one to power an outlet and one to power the
- 11:36Speaker 2: light that was in the breezeway. And we noticed my
- 11:38Speaker 2: dad was there on one of the walkthroughs, and I
- 11:41Speaker 2: went to flip the switch on because it was later
- 11:42Speaker 2: at night, it was dark, and it tripped the breaker.
- 11:45Speaker 2: So I wanted to stay there and figure it out,
- 11:48Speaker 2: but wasn't my house at that point, so we just
- 11:50Speaker 2: kind of had to reset the breaker, make sure everything
- 11:52Speaker 2: was fine, and we left. Well, I got the ceiling
- 11:55Speaker 2: pooled down and get everything cleaned up, and the squirrel
- 11:57Speaker 2: hadned away the outer jacket my wiring and made all
- 12:02Speaker 2: the wires bare copper, so my hot my neutral on
- 12:05Speaker 2: my ground. I was very surprised because there was significant
- 12:08Speaker 2: charring around the wires too, so I was very surprised
- 12:10Speaker 2: that no fire or anything else had happened. So I
- 12:14Speaker 2: was very glad that I had taken the time to
- 12:16Speaker 2: rip the ceiling down and do it the right way, yeah,
- 12:18Speaker 2: to find that damage, because that would have been a
- 12:21Speaker 2: problem later on.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It's definitely something to think about. You know, we talk
- 12:25Speaker 1: about squirrels or animals you know, that have invaded the home,
- 12:30Speaker 1: and it's frustrating on a lot of levels. It's gross,
- 12:32Speaker 1: you know, what are they're doing up there? But there's
- 12:34Speaker 1: also an incredible.
- 12:35Speaker 2: There's a significant safety concern, yeah, especially with electrical just
- 12:39Speaker 2: because they do like to chew on it for whatever reason.
- 12:42Speaker 1: So keep that in mind. If you've got animals or
- 12:44Speaker 1: you can notice them, you know, get on it right away.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Normally we would, but it's just scary when you think
- 12:49Speaker 1: about it. So anyway, you got that taken care of.
- 12:53Speaker 1: That's when I interrupted you.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And then I looked down the floor and there it
- 12:56Speaker 2: was just a cheap floor. So I had some extra
- 12:58Speaker 2: vinyl left over.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Were still getting that smell, and you thought, I don't.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Know, it was getting worse because it was getting warmer,
- 13:05Speaker 2: and I when I got the floor ripped out, I
- 13:07Speaker 2: noticed that there had been some water damage to the
- 13:09Speaker 2: subfloor from my breezeway door, which was a very easy
- 13:12Speaker 2: another easy problem for me to fix. I knew exactly
- 13:14Speaker 2: what it was, so I cut that little spot out
- 13:18Speaker 2: and I was just gonna put new floor in that
- 13:19Speaker 2: one spot, and I got hit with the smell of
- 13:23Speaker 2: times ten. It was. It was terrible. So I made
- 13:26Speaker 2: the difficult decision to cut the rest of the floor
- 13:31Speaker 2: out and see what was wrong with it. So I
- 13:34Speaker 2: cut the center of the floor out, I pried it open,
- 13:36Speaker 2: and sitting right by my front door was a dead
- 13:39Speaker 2: possum that was beginning to rot because now winter was
- 13:42Speaker 2: gone over.
- 13:43Speaker 1: And when you did that, you were on the phone
- 13:45Speaker 1: with me before you found it. You called me and
- 13:49Speaker 1: you were telling me there was nothing in the attic,
- 13:50Speaker 1: and you were just at that point pulling up pieces
- 13:53Speaker 1: of the floor, and you said, yeah, I don't know
- 13:56Speaker 1: the smell, And then all of a sudden you're going, oh,
- 13:58Speaker 1: my godness, I can't believe that, And then you were
- 14:00Speaker 1: really annoyed, and then you said it's a dead possum,
- 14:04Speaker 1: and do you remember My first thought was is it dead?
- 14:07Speaker 1: Is he really dead? Because isn't this what they do?
- 14:09Speaker 2: And I told him that I could definitely tell that
- 14:12Speaker 2: he was dead.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I asked you if did you touch his eye because
- 14:15Speaker 1: I've seen that if you can touch their open eye
- 14:17Speaker 1: and they don't do anything.
- 14:19Speaker 2: And then I told you there was no eye, okay.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And then I said, yeah, he's probably dead. That makes sense. Yeah,
- 14:24Speaker 1: so that was again huge. You used your en somatic
- 14:27Speaker 1: cleaners again, right.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but I had to. I didn't have anything to
- 14:31Speaker 2: pick it up with. I didn't have any leather gloves.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I didn't have any gloves.
- 14:34Speaker 1: You went and got stuff, right.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I called my best friend, who lives five minutes away
- 14:39Speaker 2: from me, and he brought out his square shovel and
- 14:42Speaker 2: two of his an extra pair of leather gloves for
- 14:44Speaker 2: both of us, and we gave it a unplaned burial
- 14:48Speaker 2: in my front yard.
- 14:49Speaker 1: All right in the front yard, West say why the
- 14:52Speaker 1: front everybody?
- 14:54Speaker 2: It was. It was the closest thing. My brain wasn't
- 14:56Speaker 2: working at that point. I was so livid.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Lots of life hart, but you got the smell out,
- 15:02Speaker 1: You got the smell.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I was able to find where you got in. I
- 15:04Speaker 2: sealed that up, and yeah, I got some endsmatic cleaner.
- 15:07Speaker 2: And if you're dealing with the dirt, crass, space or anything,
- 15:10Speaker 2: and you can get it, get some garden line because
- 15:13Speaker 2: that actually you throw that down and that neutralizes pH
- 15:16Speaker 2: levels in your soil and that helps also absorb smells.
- 15:19Speaker 1: All right, so you learned all kinds I did. All right,
- 15:22Speaker 1: let's move on to painting stuff. Now, before this house,
- 15:25Speaker 1: you'd never really painted anything.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Right now, I'd helped you out as a kid, did
- 15:29Speaker 2: you quotation?
- 15:30Speaker 1: You gave me.
- 15:32Speaker 2: You gave me a paint brush with no paint on it,
- 15:34Speaker 2: and you told me to go into another room. I
- 15:38Speaker 2: was happy with it.
- 15:38Speaker 1: So I got to squirt the brightest now, so you
- 15:40Speaker 1: would roll with that? No, maybe i'd let you help.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 15:44Speaker 2: You let me do a wall with you closely supervising,
- 15:47Speaker 2: which is very good because I found out my painting
- 15:50Speaker 2: technique was not not the greatest.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, well that's what I want to get to.
- 15:54Speaker 1: So this is your first time really doing it. It
- 15:56Speaker 1: really matters at this point, what did you find to
- 15:58Speaker 1: be the biggest struggle.
- 15:59Speaker 2: I was cutting around the corners and getting around all
- 16:03Speaker 2: the edges and the yeah, like the ceiling to the walls,
- 16:05Speaker 2: because they're not gonna be the same color. And I
- 16:06Speaker 2: found out that was a lot, a lot harder than
- 16:09Speaker 2: what it looks like if you see it done or
- 16:11Speaker 2: watch it done.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Do you remember that first day that you did that? Oh? Yeah,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I was there with Andrew and we were painting. Oh,
- 16:17Speaker 1: and we were cutting in and we weren't. You guys
- 16:19Speaker 1: had taped everything and we took all the tape down. Yes,
- 16:21Speaker 1: so we didn't want to work with tape and we
- 16:24Speaker 1: just didn't want to work with the tape there, and
- 16:26Speaker 1: so we started cutting in by eye and by hand.
- 16:29Speaker 1: And you can do that pretty well once you get
- 16:32Speaker 1: you know, you don't need tons of practice at it,
- 16:34Speaker 1: but you do need practice. And once you get confident,
- 16:37Speaker 1: you've got a good brush, that's really important. Get a
- 16:39Speaker 1: good brush. You can cut in pretty handily. A lot
- 16:42Speaker 1: of people try to go to the little tiny brushes
- 16:44Speaker 1: thinking that's gonna help. That's worse. Get a good brush
- 16:46Speaker 1: you can cut in. We're doing that and you start painting,
- 16:51Speaker 1: and we're flying and I catch up to you and
- 16:54Speaker 1: you've gone like a foot and a half.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Gone, Yeah, maybe three foot and that was with me.
- 16:59Speaker 1: And it was still terrible.
- 17:00Speaker 2: It was terrible, like I had marks on the wall.
- 17:02Speaker 1: What did you think at that point? Did you think
- 17:04Speaker 1: you'd ever get it?
- 17:05Speaker 2: I knew i'd get it, but I was not used
- 17:08Speaker 2: to not knowing how to do something. Yeah, because I mean,
- 17:12Speaker 2: all I've ever done for the past six years is
- 17:14Speaker 2: I've learned how to do my job, and I can
- 17:16Speaker 2: do my job well now, and all of a sudden,
- 17:18Speaker 2: I'm doing something that is linked to the trades, and
- 17:21Speaker 2: I can do other other trades very well, fairly well.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Painting just it was a surprisingly difficult. I mean I
- 17:29Speaker 2: had always known it was hard. I never thought it
- 17:31Speaker 2: was super easy.
- 17:32Speaker 1: But do you feel better about it now? Oh?
- 17:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I could. I could definitely probably do it myself
- 17:36Speaker 2: now fly through. I want to say, a.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Lot of the okay, okay, that's fair. That's fair. You've
- 17:41Speaker 1: only done maybe two or three rooms at this point
- 17:43Speaker 1: because Andrew painted.
- 17:45Speaker 2: He painted the majority and he was a huge help.
- 17:47Speaker 2: He painted the kitchen, a lot of the dining room
- 17:53Speaker 2: he painted you and him painted the upstairs pretty much. Yeah,
- 17:57Speaker 2: and then he did most of the living room. Was
- 18:00Speaker 2: so he is, I don't get to claim I paint
- 18:03Speaker 2: in my house as much as he painted my house,
- 18:05Speaker 2: and I was there to help.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Yeah. And it's funny with Andrew because he started his
- 18:09Speaker 1: I think this is third year, his third year painting. Yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 1: he does exterior work. He hadn't done a lot of
- 18:15Speaker 1: interior work before your house. He's doing more of that now.
- 18:19Speaker 1: But when he started again, I hadn't let him paint
- 18:22Speaker 1: anything either. And that summer he was starting, he was
- 18:26Speaker 1: really worried that spring, and I was surprised how worried
- 18:29Speaker 1: he was that he wasn't going to figure it out,
- 18:31Speaker 1: and so he wanted to practice, and so we were
- 18:34Speaker 1: we had a paint project and he did some of
- 18:36Speaker 1: the work and he went in completely cold. And by
- 18:40Speaker 1: the end of that summer, by just months into that summer,
- 18:43Speaker 1: a month into that summer, he was already pretty confident.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you know, you can pick it up pretty quickly.
- 18:47Speaker 1: It's not rocket science. He just takes some consistency and
- 18:51Speaker 1: some effort. All right, there's a lot more I want
- 18:54Speaker 1: to get to. I'm not letting. I'm not even giving
- 18:56Speaker 1: you the option. Normally, I asked my guests if they
- 18:58Speaker 1: can hang over and we can just keep talking you
- 19:01Speaker 1: have to because you want free.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Paint your kids. So yeah, I kind of have to
- 19:04Speaker 2: do what you say.
- 19:05Speaker 1: You have to do what I say. I like that.
- 19:06Speaker 1: So we're gonna take a break and we're just gonna
- 19:08Speaker 1: keep going on this topic. We'll be right back. Home
- 19:12Speaker 1: in Progress is brought to you by Repcolite Paints and
- 19:14Speaker 1: Benjamin Moore. Think about it. You spend hours prepping, sandy, taping,
- 19:18Speaker 1: and then finally painting. Don't throw all that work away
- 19:21Speaker 1: with an inferior product. The paint isn't just another supply.
- 19:24Speaker 1: The paint is the project. Make sure it's the best.
- 19:27Speaker 1: And we're back. You're listening to Home in Progress, brought
- 19:29Speaker 1: to you by Repcolite Paints and Benjamin Moore. And I'm
- 19:33Speaker 1: right here in the studio with Caleb Hanson, my kid,
- 19:37Speaker 1: and we're talking about his house. We're talking about first
- 19:40Speaker 1: times painting and what he's learned along the way, and yeah,
- 19:44Speaker 1: just kind of working through all kinds of stuff. It's
- 19:46Speaker 1: kind of just a fun day. Calebs showed up to
- 19:48Speaker 1: get some paint. He needed primer for a project. And
- 19:51Speaker 1: as he was on his way here from fishing doing
- 19:54Speaker 1: the important things, I dreamed up this idea that I
- 19:58Speaker 1: should just interview him because it'll give me a whole
- 20:00Speaker 1: show that I can work with. And that's great. So
- 20:03Speaker 1: it's kind of selfish and self serving, but I think
- 20:05Speaker 1: it's good info. So anyway, we talked about you doing
- 20:08Speaker 1: your painting for the first time, you know, and working
- 20:11Speaker 1: through it, getting more confident, learning more things. I mean,
- 20:14Speaker 1: because now you know the right things to ask, You
- 20:16Speaker 1: know the right steps for things. You may not always
- 20:18Speaker 1: know the right exact right product, but you know you
- 20:21Speaker 1: need primer for this, or you suspect you need primer.
- 20:24Speaker 1: You feel confident jumping in right. Yeah, that's all pretty good.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Now when when are you guys getting married? November?
- 20:31Speaker 2: November?
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yep, all right, So Melanie, you let her pick all
- 20:36Speaker 1: the colors out.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Yeah, she's done the entire into your designing.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Of the house, and that was really smart. She's been bad,
- 20:42Speaker 1: had lesson learned. You let her pick all the colors
- 20:45Speaker 1: to begin with. And when you reached out to me
- 20:49Speaker 1: for paint, you know, wondering what we could do and
- 20:51Speaker 1: get you some products here, I suggest just let me
- 20:55Speaker 1: know the colors that you picked and we'll go from there.
- 20:58Speaker 1: And I expected some really, you know, I expected conservative colors.
- 21:04Speaker 1: You're somewhat conservative guy. I figured we'd get conservative colors,
- 21:07Speaker 1: and we didn't. We got a ton of dark colors
- 21:10Speaker 1: and supersaturated colors and you know, almost a teal color
- 21:14Speaker 1: and a deep forest green. And I thought, oh my goodness,
- 21:17Speaker 1: because I had before that, I had offered to help
- 21:20Speaker 1: you paint some of these areas. And when I saw
- 21:22Speaker 1: these colors, I was anticipating it's going to take five
- 21:26Speaker 1: coats because the darker the color. People sometimes think that
- 21:29Speaker 1: if I go with a really dark color or really
- 21:32Speaker 1: vivid color, there's so much color into it, it's really
- 21:34Speaker 1: going to cover it.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Well, that's not why we bought it. But like in
- 21:38Speaker 2: my head, I'm like, well, if it's darker, it should
- 21:40Speaker 2: cover lighter colors very easily.
- 21:42Speaker 1: That's not how it works at all. I had to
- 21:44Speaker 1: let you know that, and so I was anticipating a
- 21:48Speaker 1: fair amount of coats to make this work. But we
- 21:50Speaker 1: went with Optima Repcolites optima, and the coverage was super great.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I was blown away. And I do this
- 21:58Speaker 1: all the time, but you know too, that's not just me, right, No, yeah, I.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Mean, like the living room, we were very nervous because
- 22:04Speaker 2: that that is. That is my favorite color in the house.
- 22:07Speaker 2: That's my favorite room in the house.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Do you know what color it is?
- 22:10Speaker 2: It was Yorktown more color. Yeah, yeah, I think it
- 22:14Speaker 2: was Yorktown. It's the blue were kind of like a
- 22:16Speaker 2: blue fur color.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's it's almost like a really deep teal.
- 22:21Speaker 2: And we had actually intended to get another color, and
- 22:25Speaker 2: then we decided, you know what, We're just gonna go
- 22:27Speaker 2: with this color, and that actually turned out to be
- 22:29Speaker 2: our favorite color.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it turned out really well. And you noticed the
- 22:32Speaker 1: coverage was really good because you did some of that
- 22:35Speaker 1: room I did.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I cut in the majority of the room because Andrew,
- 22:40Speaker 2: he might have been in cool.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I was in school at that time. He was coming
- 22:44Speaker 1: in the afternoons to do painting, and you got the
- 22:48Speaker 1: work done, and.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I started getting impatient, and I didn't want to take
- 22:50Speaker 2: it from him, but I wanted to get stuff and
- 22:52Speaker 2: move into so I figured I'd just go in and
- 22:55Speaker 2: cut it. And yeah, he showed up and I think
- 22:57Speaker 2: I had half the room cut. So then probably in
- 22:59Speaker 2: the next five minut and as he had the rest
- 23:00Speaker 2: of the room cut while I was still working on Yeah,
- 23:02Speaker 2: a little spot, but no.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Coverage on that stuff is really good. So if you
- 23:08Speaker 1: are using, you know, some colors that you're a little
- 23:11Speaker 1: bit concerned about with how it's going to hide optima
- 23:15Speaker 1: from repcolite. It's great price point and it just covers
- 23:18Speaker 1: in height. Part of it is optima, part of it
- 23:20Speaker 1: is the colorant system that we use. But together, man,
- 23:24Speaker 1: I was blown away because we almost could have done
- 23:26Speaker 1: everything with one coat. The right way is to always
- 23:29Speaker 1: put a second coat on. That second coat gives you,
- 23:31Speaker 1: you know, a completely consistent color, It gives you a
- 23:34Speaker 1: really consistent machine and finish, and it gives you the
- 23:37Speaker 1: most durability and washability. But even with all of that
- 23:40Speaker 1: in my head, since I was in my house, I
- 23:42Speaker 1: was thinking, we almost have this with one coat, but
- 23:45Speaker 1: we did it with two and we were good ceilings.
- 23:48Speaker 1: How did you like painting ceilings?
- 23:50Speaker 2: I liked it. It was definitely different because we chose
- 23:54Speaker 2: a white color for the ceiling. We chose a creamier white,
- 23:58Speaker 2: which was really smart.
- 23:59Speaker 1: By the way, I did my ceilings in the living
- 24:03Speaker 1: room at home, and I didn't think about it. I
- 24:06Speaker 1: haven't done a lot of ceilings. I hadn't done any
- 24:08Speaker 1: ceilings that I've painted that was my first one, and
- 24:12Speaker 1: it had its own train wreck of problems with the
- 24:14Speaker 1: stuff peeling from previous paint whoever, you know, the previous
- 24:18Speaker 1: owner painted it, and I don't know what's still going on,
- 24:21Speaker 1: but it was peeling. I got that fixed, or at
- 24:24Speaker 1: least I got it covered over, and I will never
- 24:26Speaker 1: touch that ceiling again for fear of that happening again.
- 24:29Speaker 1: But anyway, I just got straight white. I didn't think
- 24:32Speaker 1: about it. You guys got and a little bit of
- 24:34Speaker 1: an off white.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a kind of like a like a yellowee.
- 24:39Speaker 1: And that's dude's talk. You know, that's a dude talking.
- 24:42Speaker 1: It's very light cream. It's not yellowy yellow e. No,
- 24:45Speaker 1: it really makes it look finished and nice, and my
- 24:49Speaker 1: stark white looks a little plastic y. I will never
- 24:53Speaker 1: do it again. I'm going to live with it, but
- 24:55Speaker 1: I'm a little bummed that I didn't think to go
- 24:57Speaker 1: with something like that. But you didn't mind painting.
- 25:00Speaker 2: The ceilings, No, No, I didn't mind.
- 25:02Speaker 1: See I didn't like it at all at your house
- 25:04Speaker 1: because the ceilings were lower, and I thought that was
- 25:07Speaker 1: going to make it so much easier. But it hit
- 25:09Speaker 1: a hip rough writing and the angle was very sore
- 25:14Speaker 1: on my back. Oh yeah, I think I'm a tender soul. Well.
- 25:16Speaker 2: I did not like painting the angled ceilings. I did it,
- 25:20Speaker 2: or I had Andrew do it, because yeah, he did
- 25:23Speaker 2: it quick. I liked painting the flat ceilings, yeah, because
- 25:27Speaker 2: then I could just choose a spot and I could
- 25:29Speaker 2: do a grid where I just went back and tough
- 25:30Speaker 2: to see where you're going. Yeah, it was tough, but
- 25:33Speaker 2: I just decided to go over everything twice. Yeah.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Yeah, gotta get good lighting, and sometimes you can see
- 25:38Speaker 1: the wat paint, and that's how.
- 25:41Speaker 2: We had to tell us if it was shinier than
- 25:43Speaker 2: the spot next to us where I had stopped or
- 25:45Speaker 2: hadn't gotten to yet.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Yeah, but you got all of that done. I mean,
- 25:48Speaker 1: that's all big stuff. Really really kind of cool. Now
- 25:51Speaker 1: today you're here because you're painting a vanity right in
- 25:54Speaker 1: the bathroom.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Yep. I tried a little experiment with my vanity. It
- 25:58Speaker 2: did not work the way I wanted it too, So
- 26:00Speaker 2: I've put that on the back burner for a couple
- 26:02Speaker 2: of months. But now I'm tired of looking at it
- 26:04Speaker 2: with the drawers with no handles.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you were trying to ebonize the wood, right, and
- 26:08Speaker 1: we talked about that, and it can work really well
- 26:10Speaker 1: with like raw oak, meer oak. What do you mix
- 26:14Speaker 1: vinegar and you put it mixed vinegar and.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Steel hole and you let it sit for two days
- 26:19Speaker 2: and then you just take a normal paint brush or
- 26:21Speaker 2: spongebrusher and you paint over.
- 26:24Speaker 1: It and you just brush that liquid right onto the
- 26:27Speaker 1: wood and in like ten minutes it was instant. Yeah,
- 26:30Speaker 1: it really. It can get really dark. And I've done
- 26:33Speaker 1: a bunch of testing with that and it's mind blowing
- 26:36Speaker 1: how dark and black that oak can get. It's beautiful.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You tried that, but yours were finished. You tried standing
- 26:42Speaker 1: off the finish. You couldn't get enough off. It just
- 26:45Speaker 1: didn't work the way you want, so bombed out. But
- 26:48Speaker 1: you put it off. You know, got to other projects.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Now you're gonna paint them. What are you gonna paint them?
- 26:53Speaker 1: What color?
- 26:53Speaker 2: I got to decide that With the melanie, we're planning
- 26:57Speaker 2: on a darker brown maybe not maybe not like a
- 27:01Speaker 2: chocolate brown, but kind of like an oak brown or
- 27:03Speaker 2: something like that.
- 27:04Speaker 1: So just getting those painted, You got your primer, you're
- 27:07Speaker 1: picking that all up. So moving through, How confident do
- 27:10Speaker 1: you feel in that project.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Besides hopefully picking out the right color. Pretty confident, all right.
- 27:15Speaker 1: All right, all right, So how would you feel like
- 27:18Speaker 1: if you had other rooms to paint? You know, you've
- 27:20Speaker 1: done a little bit of painting, you feel like you
- 27:23Speaker 1: got enough in your head, you know what to do,
- 27:24Speaker 1: you know where to go to ask?
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. I mean, there's still I've still
- 27:27Speaker 2: got to finish paint in some of the trim in
- 27:29Speaker 2: some of the rooms. But I just wanted to get
- 27:32Speaker 2: moved in after a point, so that was something that
- 27:34Speaker 2: we can do it I later do all your time.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Yeah. So somebody out there, who's you know, in the
- 27:39Speaker 1: same situation buying their first house, you know, looking at it.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Maybe they're renting and they're trying to get a place,
- 27:45Speaker 1: and they maybe they don't have tons and tons of
- 27:47Speaker 1: skills for all these different things, and they hear everything
- 27:50Speaker 1: that you just went through, and they think, oh, my goodness,
- 27:53Speaker 1: what would you say to somebody in that boat. You know,
- 27:55Speaker 1: whether it's painting, whether it's any of this stuff.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Just do your research and look up things, and if
- 28:02Speaker 2: you have friends that know how to do certain things,
- 28:04Speaker 2: ask their advice, have them over to help. But mostly
- 28:08Speaker 2: it was. You just got to start doing it. You'll
- 28:10Speaker 2: figure it out. It might it might be a little
- 28:14Speaker 2: tough figuring out at some points, but you just got
- 28:16Speaker 2: to get through it. You'll figure it out and they'll
- 28:18Speaker 2: be very happy that you've learned that skill.
- 28:21Speaker 1: It's really cool because I didn't have a lot of
- 28:23Speaker 1: those skills either when I started at my house. You know,
- 28:27Speaker 1: a long time, even before you guys were around. I
- 28:31Speaker 1: watched Dad do stuff, but I didn't get involved with
- 28:34Speaker 1: lots of it. And when I had my own there
- 28:37Speaker 1: was just all of a sudden. What really did it
- 28:39Speaker 1: for me was money. Okay, somebody can come and do
- 28:45Speaker 1: this and it's going to cost this much money. That
- 28:47Speaker 1: means we won't eat for the month. So I'm going
- 28:50Speaker 1: to learn a new skill today to figure this out.
- 28:53Speaker 1: And there are times there's certain things that you just
- 28:55Speaker 1: don't tackle on your own. You know, everybody's got their
- 28:58Speaker 1: own limit, and you have to know your limit. That's
- 29:00Speaker 1: really important to know your limit. It's okay to push
- 29:03Speaker 1: against that limit a little bit when it's in a
- 29:05Speaker 1: safe zone. There's a certain point where you shouldn't be
- 29:08Speaker 1: doing that. But yeah, I pushed against my limit. I
- 29:11Speaker 1: didn't do everything right the first time all the time.
- 29:14Speaker 1: But I've learned a lot of stuff, and the biggest
- 29:16Speaker 1: thing I learned that is what you just said, is
- 29:19Speaker 1: that there is a pathway into it, even though I
- 29:21Speaker 1: have no idea how to do that right now. A
- 29:23Speaker 1: little bit of research and we live in the age
- 29:25Speaker 1: where the internet is just it's right there. Doesn't mean
- 29:29Speaker 1: everything you're reading is accurate. You've got to double check
- 29:31Speaker 1: in and keep reading. But you can get some good
- 29:34Speaker 1: insight into what you need to do and gain that confidence.
- 29:38Speaker 1: And then once you start doing some of this stuff,
- 29:40Speaker 1: the confidence really starts growing, yes, and you start learning
- 29:43Speaker 1: new skills and new things. One of the things I
- 29:46Speaker 1: needed to learn and needed to learn to do was
- 29:49Speaker 1: to watch the entire YouTube video to the end. I
- 29:53Speaker 1: don't know if you ever did this, but I will
- 29:54Speaker 1: watch part of it and I'll think I know how
- 29:56Speaker 1: to do that. That makes perfect sense, and then I
- 29:59Speaker 1: just start and then I never realized that step six
- 30:02Speaker 1: or five or whatever. There's all kinds of things that
- 30:04Speaker 1: m I never know.
- 30:06Speaker 2: I have the problem where if I usually try to
- 30:08Speaker 2: know what the problem is, so I just try to
- 30:11Speaker 2: find the specific part of the video that explains a problem,
- 30:15Speaker 2: and then I go from there and then you realize
- 30:17Speaker 2: I'm doing something wrong, so I have to go back
- 30:19Speaker 2: and want watch.
- 30:19Speaker 1: It again and yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so watch the
- 30:22Speaker 1: whole video. Yeah, to make sure that understand the whole process.
- 30:25Speaker 1: It's worth it. Uh, all right, I think let's take
- 30:28Speaker 1: one more break and then I want to talk about
- 30:30Speaker 1: the whole trades thing. Are you good with that? Oh? Yeah,
- 30:32Speaker 1: all right, So we're going to take a break and
- 30:34Speaker 1: we'll be right back. We'll talk about the trades. We'll
- 30:36Speaker 1: talk about skip in college. Was it a good decision
- 30:39Speaker 1: of bad decision? We'll get to all of that right
- 30:41Speaker 1: after this. You're listening to Home in Progress, where the
- 30:46Speaker 1: projects are real, the mistakes, they're educational, sometimes painful, mostly educational,
- 30:52Speaker 1: and the only thing more stubborn than that old wallpaper
- 30:56Speaker 1: on your bathroom wall is your determination to get it fixed.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Probably sponsored by repco White Paints and Benjamin Moore Paint
- 31:03Speaker 1: with a purpose, people who care and everything you need
- 31:05Speaker 1: to get the job done right. And we're back. You're
- 31:09Speaker 1: listening to Home in Progress, brought to you by repc
- 31:11Speaker 1: All White Paints and Benjamin More and it's kind of
- 31:13Speaker 1: a special episode. I'm in the studio with my son, Caleb. Caleb,
- 31:17Speaker 1: thanks for hanging out with me all this time.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah, thanks for having me Dad.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of fun. You had no idea this
- 31:22Speaker 1: was going to happen. You were fishing, had a day off,
- 31:25Speaker 1: came in to get some paint, and I just sprung
- 31:27Speaker 1: this on you.
- 31:28Speaker 2: And I knew something was up when you were out
- 31:30Speaker 2: there waiting for me by the garage door.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I was waiting.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I thought I was in trouble for something.
- 31:34Speaker 1: No. No, just like old times, I want to talk
- 31:37Speaker 1: about the trades before I do, though, I do think
- 31:40Speaker 1: this is very very quick. I'll be very quick. You
- 31:43Speaker 1: lived with me all your life, and I don't mean
- 31:47Speaker 1: this bad. Lots of kids make messes. Oh you made
- 31:53Speaker 1: pretty good messes.
- 31:54Speaker 2: I did.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Yeah, you did. And I think you know, the last
- 31:59Speaker 1: four or five years, I was pretty decent, wasn't I.
- 32:01Speaker 1: I didn't ride you like crazy and boss you around.
- 32:04Speaker 1: I just kind of lived with it. Right.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Hey, you hated it.
- 32:06Speaker 1: I hated it, but I didn't say much anyway. You
- 32:09Speaker 1: get your house. And one of the most hilarious things
- 32:12Speaker 1: that ever happened to me in my life was a
- 32:13Speaker 1: phone call that I got from you where you said,
- 32:15Speaker 1: you know, Dad, I think I finally get it. I
- 32:18Speaker 1: get why it's frustrating with the messes. And I said, oh,
- 32:21Speaker 1: do tell I would really love to know more about this.
- 32:24Speaker 1: And you said, yeah, I got my house all cleaned up,
- 32:27Speaker 1: and then I had to do something with whatever, you know,
- 32:29Speaker 1: the electrical got to drill out, and I got all
- 32:32Speaker 1: these things done, and there's a mess all over everything again.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Now I got to clean it again. I know what
- 32:38Speaker 1: it feels like, Dad, for you. And I said, what
- 32:40Speaker 1: kind of Except I would clean the house and then
- 32:42Speaker 1: you would come in and make a mess, and then
- 32:44Speaker 1: I would have to clean up your mass. At least
- 32:46Speaker 1: you're cleaning up your own mess. You've noticed that, right.
- 32:49Speaker 2: But yeah, but my am I saying my messes weren't bad.
- 32:52Speaker 2: But my messes I made in my house it was more.
- 32:54Speaker 2: There was sawdust. There was chunks of wood everywhere. Oh,
- 32:56Speaker 2: so it was a worse mess, yes, because there was
- 32:59Speaker 2: tiny little parts that I wouldn't find until the next day.
- 33:02Speaker 2: I'm like, how did I miss this pile of sawdust?
- 33:04Speaker 2: Because I could only I was doing this all in
- 33:05Speaker 2: the wintertime, so I could only lay as many drop
- 33:08Speaker 2: cluss as I could out in my living room.
- 33:10Speaker 1: All right, it sounds like you make an excuses to me.
- 33:13Speaker 1: What's different about you know, having your own house versus.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Well, you said it one time because I also called you.
- 33:18Speaker 2: I'm like, ah, I feel like I'm finally I don't
- 33:22Speaker 2: and I don't like to clean, but once I get
- 33:24Speaker 2: doing it, I enjoy it because it's fun. It's fun
- 33:26Speaker 2: sitting down and having a clean house. And then you
- 33:30Speaker 2: said I can't remember all of a sudden, but you
- 33:33Speaker 2: had said, oh, yeah, okay, I remember now because I
- 33:36Speaker 2: had said, man, I just I don't know why I'm
- 33:38Speaker 2: such a why I clean so much now? And you, well,
- 33:40Speaker 2: it's because now you're realizing if you don't clean it,
- 33:43Speaker 2: nobody's going to clean it, right. And I've noticed it
- 33:45Speaker 2: is that there's been a couple of times now where
- 33:47Speaker 2: I've let something kind of I let the dishes kind
- 33:50Speaker 2: of pile up a little bit.
- 33:51Speaker 1: It bites you.
- 33:52Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden, now I have no spoons,
- 33:54Speaker 2: I have no forks, I have no plates.
- 33:55Speaker 1: And you've got a lot more dishes to one.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Now I gotta do dishes, and then I gotta make
- 33:58Speaker 2: more dishes, and I got to do the dishes.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, so I happened up on It is a
- 34:03Speaker 1: good thing.
- 34:03Speaker 2: It is, it is.
- 34:04Speaker 1: It's just fun to hear. Now you skipped college. Walk
- 34:07Speaker 1: me through that decision? Was that? Well, just walk me
- 34:11Speaker 1: through that decision.
- 34:12Speaker 2: It was very difficult, it was or was it was.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Not difficul No, I I just didn't like sitting down.
- 34:18Speaker 2: I just was antsy. I want to be doing something.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Did not want to be doing this for the next
- 34:23Speaker 2: four years or whatever I had to do after high school.
- 34:25Speaker 2: So I went right into the trades.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Started at just I think service professors. You started. You
- 34:35Speaker 1: work for Walter's Electric now, yes, and we'll throw those
- 34:38Speaker 1: names around. That's good and yeah, you just jumped right in.
- 34:42Speaker 1: And was that scary at first?
- 34:44Speaker 2: Or it was a little bit, But I have I've
- 34:48Speaker 2: never been nervous to do new things. No, I'll always
- 34:50Speaker 2: at least try something once and realize I don't like it.
- 34:55Speaker 2: But I remembered Grandpa, my dad. Yeah, your dad had
- 35:00Speaker 2: worked at an electrical supply store, and I remembered I
- 35:03Speaker 2: stole one of his tool belts. You stole it, well,
- 35:06Speaker 2: he gave it to me. But it was because I
- 35:07Speaker 2: didn't want to take it off.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Okay, Well that you were little, yeah, I was probably three,
- 35:11Speaker 1: four or five. Okay, So you got to say that
- 35:13Speaker 1: because when you say I stole.
- 35:14Speaker 2: That, I figured I figured it was everybody was.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Doing Walter's Electric probably not going to hire them.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Now, this was before I have all my own stuff.
- 35:23Speaker 1: You're over your klepto stuff. That klepto phase is gone. Yes,
- 35:26Speaker 1: So you're just little kids. So you got grandpa's tool belt.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and that was just that was the one thing
- 35:31Speaker 2: that made me decide that I wanted to cry electrical
- 35:34Speaker 2: because I remember Grandpa talking.
- 35:36Speaker 1: He always did that too. So so you're five years in,
- 35:40Speaker 1: six years in, how do you feel about it?
- 35:42Speaker 2: Good? I feel good.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Did you think it's the right decision I do? About money? Work?
- 35:45Speaker 1: You know? Do you like the work? The money's been good.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Money's been good. I really do like the work, especially electrical.
- 35:51Speaker 2: It's constantly changing with all these new fancy switches out.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Just everything's constantly updating with in the electrical field, so
- 36:00Speaker 2: there's always something new to learn, and you like that.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Mm hmm. It's very fun because it doesn't it keeps
- 36:07Speaker 2: away the monotony.
- 36:08Speaker 1: And it's really cool to me. Because you're solving problems.
- 36:13Speaker 1: You're you're bringing up new products, mentioning things to us
- 36:15Speaker 1: all the time. Oh you should do this, Oh you
- 36:17Speaker 1: should do that. Oh we can get you a new
- 36:19Speaker 1: bathroom fan because your fans noisy. I talked about it
- 36:23Speaker 1: on the show a couple of weeks ago, I think.
- 36:25Speaker 1: But the power line got yanked off my house by
- 36:29Speaker 1: you know, just a spent truck in a pole, and
- 36:31Speaker 1: you know, all this bad stuff happened, and you happened
- 36:33Speaker 1: to I called you for just some advice, and you
- 36:37Speaker 1: came out to take a look, and it all worked out.
- 36:40Speaker 1: You were able to fix the part that you needed
- 36:43Speaker 1: to fix, because I needed to get an electrician for
- 36:45Speaker 1: part of this. And it was, oh my gosh, so
- 36:49Speaker 1: so much. It relieves so much pressure knowing that I
- 36:53Speaker 1: had somebody who could just do that. And it's just
- 36:56Speaker 1: amazing to me that you've got all of those abilities.
- 36:59Speaker 1: What about like college debt, you got none of them.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I have no college debt. That's been very nice. If
- 37:04Speaker 2: I had to learn how to save money, I've had
- 37:07Speaker 2: no no college debt.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Yeah. So yeah, that's always a struggle. Everybody learns that
- 37:11Speaker 1: saving money thing. We don't start with that, except Maddie,
- 37:14Speaker 1: your sister twins, she started I don't know, she just
- 37:18Speaker 1: knew how.
- 37:18Speaker 2: To say she's cheap. He's a cheap skate.
- 37:21Speaker 1: In a good way. In a good way. Yeah, sometimes
- 37:23Speaker 1: all right, So you've got one thing that I really
- 37:26Speaker 1: love about what you do is you've learned all these skills,
- 37:28Speaker 1: these electrical skills, but as this house has unfolded around you,
- 37:33Speaker 1: you know, and all these different things you run into.
- 37:35Speaker 1: One thing that's so cool is that you work with electricians,
- 37:38Speaker 1: but you also work with all kinds of people from
- 37:40Speaker 1: all kinds of diff I get work.
- 37:42Speaker 2: I work with plumbers, I work with h VAC technician,
- 37:44Speaker 2: I work with pretty much anything that needs done to
- 37:47Speaker 2: your house, I've probably worked with.
- 37:49Speaker 1: And so when you've got a question, you've either seen
- 37:52Speaker 1: people doing this stuff, or you've got somebody you can
- 37:54Speaker 1: reach out to who's a maybe not a friend, maybe
- 37:57Speaker 1: a friend.
- 37:58Speaker 2: For most of the people I work with, and I
- 38:01Speaker 2: enjoy work when then I see them quite often because
- 38:03Speaker 2: we all I work for the same contractors that they do,
- 38:05Speaker 2: so we see each other quite often.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you had what was it the toilet
- 38:11Speaker 1: because the inspector came through and you know, he flushed
- 38:14Speaker 1: the toilet and made all of that. Nobody sat on
- 38:16Speaker 1: the toilet. Nope, I think Melanie did.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Melanie was the one that found it. I was cleaning
- 38:20Speaker 2: the kitchen and she sat down and I heard her scream.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I didn't know what was going on, so I ran
- 38:26Speaker 2: to the bathroom. What was going on? And she goes, well,
- 38:31Speaker 2: the toilet tilts. What do you So I put my
- 38:34Speaker 2: hand on it and I pushed down in it. It
- 38:37Speaker 2: rocked back and forth, probably about a quarter of an
- 38:39Speaker 2: inch more more.
- 38:41Speaker 1: It was crazy. Yeah, I couldn't believe. It was like
- 38:44Speaker 1: it was like one of those little things at the
- 38:46Speaker 1: little park with the big springs where you sit out
- 38:48Speaker 1: as a little kid.
- 38:49Speaker 2: It was terrible.
- 38:50Speaker 1: So it looks like a duck when toilet.
- 38:53Speaker 2: The bathroom was the one room I did not think
- 38:54Speaker 2: I was gonna have to touch very much. And I
- 38:56Speaker 2: had I've redone the floor, i've redone, and once I
- 39:00Speaker 2: redid the floor, I realized I had to really redo
- 39:02Speaker 2: the floor when I saw that the toilet had never
- 39:04Speaker 2: gotten screwed back into the flange.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Yeah, so you had all kinds of stuff. Did you
- 39:08Speaker 1: bring in a plumber or did you talk to it
- 39:10Speaker 1: and consult a plumber for that one.
- 39:12Speaker 2: I talked to a plumber and he said it was
- 39:14Speaker 2: fairly simple. You just got to make sure that the
- 39:16Speaker 2: flange is sitting below the floor or the underlamin it,
- 39:22Speaker 2: because if it sits up pie, you're gonna risk having
- 39:24Speaker 2: the same issue.
- 39:25Speaker 1: So you got all of that fixed. You just tackled
- 39:28Speaker 1: all these things. You've got sources. What would you say
- 39:30Speaker 1: to anybody out there? You know, maybe somebody out there
- 39:33Speaker 1: is listening who's in your boat, or maybe a parent
- 39:36Speaker 1: has a kid who they're not sure about, or a
- 39:38Speaker 1: grand you know, a grandparent has a grandchild who they're thinking.
- 39:42Speaker 1: I'm not sure what they're thinking about doing for their career.
- 39:45Speaker 1: What do you think about the trades you're in it?
- 39:46Speaker 1: What would you say to those people?
- 39:48Speaker 2: I would say it's a very good decision. Obviously, like
- 39:52Speaker 2: every job, it's not for everybody. You might get into
- 39:54Speaker 2: it find out you don't like it. But it's something
- 39:57Speaker 2: that you're constantly moving, you're constantly learning, you're never in
- 40:03Speaker 2: you're you're not in one spot for very often, for
- 40:05Speaker 2: very long, very often unless you're sitting on a big job.
- 40:08Speaker 2: But yeah, it's just it's something that you're never bored
- 40:13Speaker 2: and very rarely I should say, actually, are you bored?
- 40:17Speaker 2: Because there's always those slow days where you don't got
- 40:19Speaker 2: much going on. You might have to work in the shop,
- 40:21Speaker 2: and that can just very rarely, yes, very rarely. And
- 40:26Speaker 2: it helps when you work for a good company like Walter's,
- 40:28Speaker 2: like I do. I mean there's every I like everybody there.
- 40:32Speaker 2: We all enjoy each other's company. We all poke fun
- 40:36Speaker 2: at each other in a good way. You're gonna get
- 40:38Speaker 2: that in the trades.
- 40:38Speaker 1: You're gonna get made fun of.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Especially someone like me. I I take it as much
- 40:43Speaker 2: as I give it. Well, you know this dad on
- 40:46Speaker 2: the radio. We're not the tallest of men, Dad, We're not.
- 40:50Speaker 1: No, we got to be lifted to get things off
- 40:52Speaker 1: the top fridge.
- 40:54Speaker 2: I mean, yesterday it was one of my co workers.
- 40:56Speaker 2: I was unloading a big ladder from my van. I
- 40:59Speaker 2: need to get a ladder to get a ladder off
- 41:01Speaker 2: my van, and they decided they had to point that
- 41:04Speaker 2: out to me.
- 41:05Speaker 1: You're a two ladder guy.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Yeah, So I made sure I told him. He's like, well,
- 41:08Speaker 2: I can't reach it, so I do need a little
- 41:10Speaker 2: bit of a help helping hand Yeah. So if you are,
- 41:12Speaker 2: if you are shorten near in the trades, make sure
- 41:14Speaker 2: you try to work with someone that's tall. They can
- 41:16Speaker 2: reach stuff that you can't.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Yeah, just come with thick skin. Oh yeah, but it's
- 41:19Speaker 1: all meant well.
- 41:20Speaker 2: It's all meant well. And then funny, there's always people
- 41:22Speaker 2: there to learn from and they're always willing to teach you,
- 41:25Speaker 2: and you just gotta be willing to learn. So as
- 41:28Speaker 2: long as you're willing to learn, you got a good,
- 41:30Speaker 2: good work ethic.
- 41:31Speaker 1: And yeah, it's going to be physical.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it is gonna be that's nice. It is nice.
- 41:36Speaker 1: You know Andrew Andrew to your brother with all the painting.
- 41:39Speaker 1: You know, he's moving these huge ladders around and summer,
- 41:42Speaker 1: I forget how much weight he lost. He didn't even
- 41:44Speaker 1: have that much weight, but no, he it all transitioned
- 41:47Speaker 1: into muscle.
- 41:48Speaker 2: He he can carry ladders, extension ladders better than I can.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Because he showed me how he did with the one
- 41:53Speaker 2: I have from my work.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Fan.
- 41:55Speaker 2: When I lived at your house, I was we had
- 41:57Speaker 2: to get it out because we were helping you with
- 41:58Speaker 2: something on the roof, and he goes, you want to
- 42:01Speaker 2: see what I do? He extended that thing almost all
- 42:03Speaker 2: the way up. I'm like, I usually extend and take
- 42:06Speaker 2: it all the way down to move it. And he
- 42:08Speaker 2: I don't even know how he grabbed it. He grabbed
- 42:09Speaker 2: it and walked away with it. Yeah, and if I
- 42:11Speaker 2: had done that, I would have fallen ahead and land
- 42:13Speaker 2: on me.
- 42:14Speaker 1: I know. Same here, So trades, it's it's absolutely something
- 42:18Speaker 1: to explore. It is an option, you know, and there's
- 42:21Speaker 1: a lot of benefit to it, you know. Just the
- 42:23Speaker 1: no debt thing is huge, just to be putting money
- 42:25Speaker 1: away right off the bat. Well, Caleb, I'm gonna let
- 42:29Speaker 1: you get back to your project now. Thank you so
- 42:32Speaker 1: much for hanging out with me. Oh, thanks for having me.
- 42:33Speaker 1: It's a lot of fun, all right, And that's going
- 42:35Speaker 1: to do it for this episode of Home in Progress.
- 42:37Speaker 1: If you want to catch it again, you can find
- 42:39Speaker 1: it online at repcol light dot com. Thanks for hanging
- 42:42Speaker 1: out with me and letting me just kind of have this,
- 42:44Speaker 1: this fun conversation with my kid. Hopefully you got something
- 42:47Speaker 1: out of it. And yeah, have a great day everybody.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Whatever you do today makes your paints a part of it.
- 42:53Speaker 1: And I'll see you next weekend for Home in Progress.
- 42:55Speaker 1: I'm Dan Hanson. Thanks for listening to
