- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:48I'm Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian C Club, buddy, Sunday
- 0:52night, we watched the Richmond game yesterday.
- 0:57We did it was a w but how we feeling how we feeling man 9:39
- 1:06when probably the second ugliest win to an FCS team?
- 1:14Since the twenties been here, Fuhrman was obviously the worst
- 1:18when literally, if not for a procedure penalty they could
- 1:21have recovered an onside kick. Not great, not great at all.
- 1:29Everyone will also see my head turn like this quite a few times
- 1:32tonight is the 49ers are playing and they're not doing great.
- 1:36Either throwing picks down only 10 somehow but you know, Braun.
- 1:42It's it seems like it's a similar thing when there is
- 1:46lower competition. Coaching staff can't get guys up
- 1:50to go for blood. And it's a good to continued.
- 1:55It's no longer it's a trend now it's no longer a well just this
- 1:59will know. It's a trend and you hate to see
- 2:03it because games like this You know man if it's crucial for
- 2:11getting younger players on field to see actual speed of games.
- 2:16Yeah, this is supposed to be one of those games where you get
- 2:20guys on the field that are going to be one of those guys that are
- 2:25going to Redshirt. But you want to get get their
- 2:27four games in there. But in their four games, you
- 2:30want to have one game like this where they see, you know, at
- 2:34least a solid 15 or 20 Right, exactly.
- 2:38That'd be ideal, get guys out there.
- 2:41You let them see, at least, you know, probably to live Series,
- 2:44right? And we didn't get to do that.
- 2:47It was. It wasn't like we had to run the
- 2:49clock out against Richmond against, right?
- 2:53That's where we are. At this point, we were out there
- 2:55with, with our starting offense, running the clock out against
- 2:59Richmond. So they didn't have a chance to
- 3:01get a last-minute score and then go for an onside kick, which one
- 3:05I put us. In infirm and territory, right?
- 3:09It would have been in Furman territory.
- 3:11They would have scored then get the kick, so not quite there but
- 3:15still an 11-point win is even over a good FCS team.
- 3:19Like Richmond is, it's not great.
- 3:21Now, what we're going to do guys before we jump into some
- 3:25observations from the game we're going to go back and we're going
- 3:29to talk about two quotes that was made last Monday that coach
- 3:33Fuente and then to postgame quotes.
- 3:35So and I'm just going to read them also a lot to unload and
- 3:39then we're going to get into it last Monday.
- 3:41We said this on Wednesdays podcast, concerning red zone
- 3:45offense and Kyle fence in general, we stunk, you don't go
- 3:48down there three times and Come Away with nothing.
- 3:51Not re-evaluate, talk about and look at all aspects of it.
- 3:54Top to bottom. We weren't very good then the
- 3:57next quote, but I would also say there's nobody better to iron
- 4:00out the minutiae. It takes to give our guys a
- 4:04chance to be successful. Then Brad.
- 4:09Kohn was a little bit different Saturday after the game and
- 4:13these were coach for Wednesday's quotes, not making these a thin
- 4:16air. They often struggle, we were
- 4:18pretty inconsistent to say the least.
- 4:22We haven't not been consistent enough to score like this and we
- 4:26need to score as the season goes along.
- 4:30Well, chunk agent demeanor Humber on.
- 4:33Yeah, it's one thing to struggle off fensively against.
- 4:38What is, as we saw this week against Oklahoma.
- 4:43A pretty solid West Virginia Defense overall.
- 4:47That's one thing. It was a road game.
- 4:50It was a big test. You know, whatever you're at
- 4:53home against Richmond. Yep.
- 4:57You can't put up 21 points. Points.
- 5:00No, and sorry 14. Offensive point 14 offensive
- 5:05points. It just can't I mean it's
- 5:11acceptable in the here the change in the tone of being
- 5:15inconsistent and you know we've got to kind of find something.
- 5:20It sounds like the stuff on Monday was lip service.
- 5:26To the Press lip service to the fans, the fans that are still
- 5:31completely on his side and it went to Saturday, just saying
- 5:36we're inconsistent essentially. He came out and just said it,
- 5:39we're not good on offense and you did.
- 5:42He said we cannot continue to be bad on offense because we're
- 5:46going to have to score in certain games.
- 5:48As we look ahead, especially starting Notre Dame, two weeks
- 5:54for 13 days from now. Yep.
- 5:56Low, the question is, will he follow through with anything?
- 6:02And again, if I take the stuff from Monday, And then the stuff
- 6:08from Saturday, there was a change in tone, at least yet.
- 6:15You see the change in tone. And some point we just gotta
- 6:20There's just got to be ownership because I know we talked about
- 6:23this. A lot.
- 6:24We talked about, you know, the difference between the play
- 6:27calling issues, the execution issues, it all goes back to
- 6:30coaching and if you're not getting it done on the field
- 6:36consistently, there's a coaching problem.
- 6:39Well what can we can? We just look real quick college
- 6:42football World. Auburn's first-year head coach.
- 6:46First year head coach hired his fired his wide.
- 6:50Coach today. We're four games in a season and
- 6:55he's already hired somebody. Yeah, I mean, if you're not
- 7:00cutting the mustard, you got to go.
- 7:02This is this is a division. One football isn't the the frat
- 7:06boy club? No, he's convinced you want
- 7:09football and you're getting paid a lot of money, and I'm going to
- 7:14say this because in terms of the play calling, this was not a
- 7:18awful game by Brad. But the problem that we have is
- 7:22that This is essentially the quarterback more or less
- 7:25handpicked by Brad cornelison. Yeah.
- 7:28Brad cornelison is the offensive coordinator for Justin Fuente.
- 7:32You think what we're now seeing is had a is also the
- 7:34quarterbacks coach the area where we are struggling the most
- 7:38right now is two areas, right? So we haven't been able to run
- 7:41the ball consistently but our offensive line has been a
- 7:43fucking Patchwork. In our hand-picked quarterback
- 7:46is struggling to find open receivers And you're saying open
- 7:50receivers not throwing into Tight Windows, not seeing the
- 7:54Reeds. We're talking guys who were open
- 7:57and he did a better job Saturday and we'll get into him but it's
- 8:02still going back to what the tone has been with us and what
- 8:05that tone was Monday compared to what that Tom was Saturday.
- 8:09He has to do something and he has to Justin Fuente needs to
- 8:14verbally, come out and say something is changing.
- 8:18Don't don't, don't try to hide it.
- 8:21Because the thing is we're smart enough fans and there's more
- 8:27smart fans there that are going to see.
- 8:29If you start calling plays, they're going to see you have
- 8:31the place Sheets if Notre Dame comes and we're tearing it up
- 8:35and they show you six times and you consistently have a place
- 8:37sheet there. We know that because if you're
- 8:42saying it, you're admitting there's a problem, right?
- 8:46Your yeah. That's been the big big thing is
- 8:49that, this this is kind of close to saying there's a problem.
- 8:52But, you know, the first, the first instance of trying to
- 8:56solve a problem is admitting that there is one.
- 8:59Yeah. And that's what we have not
- 9:02done. Consistently is that we have.
- 9:04Yeah, coach Fuente is not one up there and said there is a
- 9:07problem. We're going to try to Take care
- 9:10of it. Yeah, and you know the center
- 9:11part Braun. This is this is kind of what I
- 9:16want to make a point about he literally he is friends with
- 9:19this guy. There's no doubt about it.
- 9:21You don't keep someone in your life.
- 9:23Roughly what? 15, 16 years that and not have a
- 9:28friendship. He is doing his friend to
- 9:30disservice because the thing is, when this ends in that, you
- 9:40know, it's going to end one way or the other in a few short
- 9:45months when this ends. Him not getting on him earlier
- 9:50taken away. Responsibilities trying to
- 9:53highlight what he does. Good what he does.
- 9:55Bad. People are going to look like
- 9:59we're not hiring you like we looked at what you had offensive
- 10:03ly. You should have been scoring 35
- 10:05Plus a game and you have some great designs.
- 10:09The people never tell you you were wrong in your life.
- 10:13Yeah, and that's the issues that, you know, as you said,
- 10:17he's going to struggle to find work after this because you're
- 10:20putting a product on the field that consistently has played
- 10:26down to competition, especially on the offensive side of the
- 10:31ball. Well like how effective we are
- 10:34on offense is almost dictated by the strength of the opponent
- 10:37we're playing. And that that should never be
- 10:40the case. You know, you can we can talk
- 10:43about the situational play calling and we can talk about
- 10:45all that other stuff because that but that's individual
- 10:48focuses. The big problem in the big
- 10:50picture I have is that we don't seem to have a good grasp of
- 10:55What we want from the quarterback position and how to
- 10:58develop it and once we put the product on the field for
- 11:03whatever reason that unit almost like clockwork, playing to the
- 11:09strength of whatever the opponent is.
- 11:11We're not going out there and dictating terms to to folks that
- 11:14we have the strength of our roster is significantly higher
- 11:19than that of the opponent. Well, And that's on the
- 11:22individual who's doing that again.
- 11:24Like I've said now numerous times that I've got to make
- 11:27enough stand on it, it's Justin more than its Brad.
- 11:30I'm past Brad now and it's Justin you have to do something,
- 11:34you know, I mean there hasn't been a change and you know I
- 11:38will say it again. The thing that is for me and the
- 11:43reason why I say this is this is coaching not just play your
- 11:46execution players, not executing in a one-off scenario.
- 11:50So like one game Here. One game there.
- 11:53Yeah, that happens. Regardless of what the coaches
- 11:56are doing having consistently. This problem crop up multiple
- 12:01times a year every year that's in coaching thing.
- 12:05It's telling me your coat that methodology.
- 12:09This is sowing his coaching / teaching.
- 12:12Methodology is not a good is not good, you know, you hate to say
- 12:19it, Brian. But you know, You've seen some
- 12:23people who essentially go to school to become teachers,
- 12:26right? And they start getting to those
- 12:29teaching method classes and lesson planning and what you do
- 12:31in the classroom and they don't know what to do it, right.
- 12:36They don't like like I know the subject matter and it's like
- 12:39okay but you're teaching somewhere between a
- 12:41five-year-old or if you get into the Collegiate level people in
- 12:45their 20s and you know even grad school in their 30s you if you
- 12:50do not know how to teach them. Then it doesn't matter if you
- 12:54know how to do it all or you know, exactly what's going to
- 12:57happen and I'll always go back to my experiences.
- 13:01I mean I'll be straight up. I failed geometry Always felt
- 13:05the teacher, like my style didn't work.
- 13:10Next year, took it again. Got a 98 average.
- 13:16It was like, you teacher you how to present it better, light bulb
- 13:21moment, a light bulb moment and, and, and I think that's the what
- 13:25you're kind of saying here is. It's because we've seen it even
- 13:30when Gerard was here five years ago, there were some games where
- 13:34there are some things that were done that just didn't look right
- 13:38now. In after you take a dive his
- 13:40talent level out, you saw a little more, Josh Jackson.
- 13:44You saw it a hell of a lot more with Ryan Willis because of not
- 13:48having the mobility. Yep.
- 13:50And then it really showed displayed Willis in nineteen.
- 13:55You had hooker come in and believe it.
- 13:59Say, what you will, we go through 2019 and as we get near
- 14:03the end of the season, it shows its face right last year, we'll
- 14:08throw that out but still It was teaching we had games where we
- 14:14were doing some just in things that baggage and you're just
- 14:18like, why? Teaching.
- 14:22So now He might be a guy that understands offensive design.
- 14:27How to get players open. He doesn't understand situation
- 14:31situation of Lake calling in the way.
- 14:33It's looking for evidence is mounting more right Ron.
- 14:37Yeah, he can't teach and coach the position.
- 14:44Yeah, I mean it's getting to a point.
- 14:46Now when we look at the entire big picture of the quarterback
- 14:50situation since Justin Fuente and Brad cornelison have been in
- 14:57Blacksburg, it's been a complete cluster and and I'm not just
- 15:04saying the play, the play has at times been good but the whole
- 15:09situation around how we get, there has been a cluster you
- 15:13have You bring in Jerrod and that worked out great for a
- 15:18season. But there were still some, some,
- 15:20some things that you were looking at it was like, okay but
- 15:26he played well, he played his ass off, then you had JJ and
- 15:32then you have him coming back, getting injured.
- 15:36And then just there's been so much dysfunction of Of the
- 15:42quarterback position. It makes you wonder, like, at
- 15:45some point where there's smoke. There's fire, right?
- 15:47I mean, you've had Jerrod leave early.
- 15:51Yeah, I've had JJ transfer out, you've had two other
- 15:55quarterbacks transfer owl. Like at some point, whether
- 16:00smoke? There's fire.
- 16:01There's a reason, these things are happening.
- 16:04You know, you had Jerrod best Juco quarterback in the country.
- 16:08Yeah. Other four stars and they're
- 16:10gone. And then JJ, who was a, at least
- 16:13as very that the very least, a solid starter Jenna, let's start
- 16:21the whole piece that goes is Brian.
- 16:23We can sit here and you know, talk about that room but we just
- 16:27kind of look And let's just start blowing through running
- 16:32back position. Yep, we had changed when there
- 16:35were issues. Yeah, yeah, wide receiver
- 16:39position, unfortunately. The best coach in the room.
- 16:43We have turn over there. This is essential to making
- 16:47break here for that guy, and it's looking more break than
- 16:49make the offensive line and tight end.
- 16:52Say what you will, they have their moments.
- 16:56But overall, good, right, good. I'd say in this in the scheme of
- 17:02the of the five to six years. Now, you know, you give them at
- 17:05least a passing grade, right? You give them probably somewhere
- 17:08between a b - probably be - be not terrible, because you're,
- 17:14they put some guys in the leave you Two.
- 17:16Good years. You've had one great year a good
- 17:19year to average years and then two years that you like B&B -
- 17:26and then you look on the other side of the bowl.
- 17:29And obviously there's been a complete turn over there.
- 17:32A complete turn over in a what are we seeing we're seeing eye
- 17:36defensive backs. Guys, get freshman all Americans
- 17:39Jermaine wohlers working his way towards being a high around
- 17:42graphic and Green Bay scored. We need to put Tre Lansing
- 17:46Sidebar. No, just do it, just do it 80s.
- 17:50You know, we we've seen the safety plan or some people were
- 17:53not impressed with Jam last year, safety plays look better.
- 17:56This year, it's not where I want it.
- 17:58And obviously, Jack Tyler coming building.
- 18:01JC Billington built. We've seen turnover at all those
- 18:06positions. Yeah, he's one position.
- 18:08There's one J&J. See, wasn't even on the field
- 18:11for this game because that wasn't the covid pole.
- 18:13So, there's one position there has been zero.
- 18:16No, turn over it. And super not, not average play,
- 18:22not average play at times failure.
- 18:25Play Because I would give that room ad a solid D.
- 18:34Right, I mean right now. Absolutely, yeah, yeah.
- 18:37It's borderline F. It's D - right now in my eyes,
- 18:41it's tough, it's tough. All right, Ron.
- 18:44Before we get on to looking at some highlights of the game,
- 18:48some things we noticed. There we are going to take a
- 18:51quick balls, pause for a message from our digital Partners.
- 18:55All right, Brian. Let's start with this.
- 18:57Can we just say this? And we can argue who creates it.
- 19:04Our opening game Drive scripts, 90% of the time, or money.
- 19:08I'm getting money. We script a hell of a hell of a
- 19:14drive. And then after that, we don't
- 19:17know what to do. And if the script doesn't work,
- 19:19we really don't know what to do. So, for example, of the script
- 19:24not working, see, Middle Tennessee State.
- 19:27Yeah. Which look what?
- 19:30When we see the skirt, not working.
- 19:31We also see very plain vanilla, But in this case Brian I mean
- 19:35some just a good mix of pass and runs what did you see on that
- 19:40opening drive that really caught your eye?
- 19:41What plays? So the big plate of tree out the
- 19:45gate, the little cross country, Sprint out, good play at the
- 19:50gate to get some big yards, get us on the Move.
- 19:54We had outside Zone to Holston 19 yards.
- 19:58Got us into the Red Zone and then we had play action pose to
- 20:01Trey Turner gets the Toe tap there in the back of the end
- 20:06zone. Good guys, up 7.
- 20:10Nothing really good drive out. The gate and everyone in Hokie
- 20:13nation is thinking all right. This is what we like to see.
- 20:16This is you know at that point the expectations went.
- 20:21Okay this is this is going to be a traditional FCS type game.
- 20:25We're going to go out there and make some noise and then the
- 20:29rest of the game happen Exactly. So we're not going to focus on
- 20:34game by game. We're going to start out here
- 20:37after that. Let's talk about Bryce and we've
- 20:39already mentioned you know sort of criticizing the room hold on
- 20:44a second. All you have to do at the
- 20:47kicker, get you Shannon huge run back on the board.
- 20:54Let's talk about BB and we've already mentioned it coaching is
- 20:58not all play calling. We've already covered that
- 21:00point. So, but, you know, we've been
- 21:04questioning for weeks for on, you know, is he injured as you
- 21:07entered? We're not seeing the read
- 21:09option. We're not seeing the read
- 21:10option. I think that's off the table
- 21:12now. It seems so even though we put
- 21:16some design runs back into the offense this week, the read
- 21:21option is still a non-existent factor, you know, all those
- 21:27handoffs to Holston and Blackshear, I mean BB's pretty
- 21:31much just carrying out a fake. That's not, that's not him,
- 21:34making decision to keep their. I'm thinking.
- 21:38I don't know if they're taking it out to keep him healthy, or
- 21:41just play it safe or what but not having that.
- 21:43Element in our offense is a detriment to the offense.
- 21:47Well, hold on. If you're, if you're going to
- 21:48say that run then why are you designing sweeps and having him
- 21:51run a power? If he's to like hurt or you're
- 21:55trying to protect him, you wouldn't even put those in the
- 21:57Playbook. You would just say scramble and
- 21:59you can, you would think so. And I think another problem is
- 22:03that, you know, sometimes he's scrambling when he shouldn't.
- 22:07So I'll give you an example here.
- 22:09Okay, I'll give an example here. Second drive we could have been
- 22:13up. Nothing.
- 22:14Because at our 32-yard line it was about think like eight
- 22:22minutes left in the first quarter.
- 22:24Okay, play to ended up Braxton kept it ran outside.
- 22:32Got a first down. I mean look like a good run on
- 22:34but looking at looking back at it.
- 22:38Caleb ran wide wide fucking wide open, the quarterback came on a
- 22:49blitz, the safety jumped in the box, and Caleb Smith is running
- 22:54wide. Open down the left sideline and
- 22:58Braxton did not even look his way.
- 23:01And it was open at the snap. It wasn't like it came open.
- 23:06It was open. All the way.
- 23:10So even if he doesn't do the launch downfield, he could hit
- 23:12him like 15 yards in stride and just kept running.
- 23:16If he looked his way any point of his drop back, he would have
- 23:21been able to throw the ball to him.
- 23:23He wears his first read. Where did look like his first
- 23:26read was because well it looked like his first read was in the
- 23:29middle of the field. Was it raised his eyes weren't
- 23:32turned this way. Was it to his blind side or was
- 23:35it to his face side? So it looked like, it'd be like
- 23:40I said, looked like he was right down the middle.
- 23:41Like looking down the middle, I don't know, I'm asking.
- 23:43Where is it a blitz come from? I'm you got to remember.
- 23:46I'm the blitz come from Blindside.
- 23:49Okay, so it will still if he's looking in the middle and if
- 23:52it's that safety coming down into the box that he should have
- 23:55immediately recognized to go here.
- 23:59Why is the safety here? Look left.
- 24:02And seeing okay, let's digress on that he's missed.
- 24:06I'll give this to him. He's making some, he's making
- 24:11some boneheaded reads. So again, we've already hit on
- 24:14it. What's being discussed behind
- 24:16closed doors but I'll say this, he gives his Guys, an
- 24:19opportunity, he gets the pass his right.
- 24:21He gives the guys an opportunity to catch the ball.
- 24:25That tray that deep last a trade in the second half, right?
- 24:31And then, like the crossing pattern, some of the plays to
- 24:34Tavian think about it. He called those guys in stride.
- 24:39So when he gets his read and throws on time, it looks good.
- 24:44The problem is that, it's so inconsistent with both of those
- 24:48things, and, again, at this point, I'm not, I'm not even mad
- 24:52at Braxton, because Either, this should have been recognized way
- 24:59before. Now we shouldn't, we shouldn't
- 25:00be in week 4 and we're still At this point, he hasn't been
- 25:06coached enough to say, hey Braxton, you need to keep, you
- 25:10know, be a little more cognizant of the pocket.
- 25:14Not try to look to run out of the pocket as fast.
- 25:17Hey make sure you're getting these reads.
- 25:20We saw that you missed a couple here.
- 25:22You got to make sure you going through your progressions before
- 25:24you make a decision to tuck and run or do something different.
- 25:27Yeah, unless his we mean, unless you just the pressures there and
- 25:32you can't yeah, your s and Sometimes it's just you know,
- 25:36antsy feet in the in the pocket like it and that's it.
- 25:41These are coachable things, but it hasn't been coached, it seems
- 25:45like keep right now and I think that's where my frustration is.
- 25:49And like I said, if it was a one-off game where we saw some
- 25:52of these things it is it's not, it's not that it's not one off
- 25:59and we see him the Carolina game with the play with Trey.
- 26:04That the coverage was blown. He throws it.
- 26:06Yeah, down back game is a lot is a lot easier.
- 26:11Thank you for throwing that. Sorry, it's a new In The End
- 26:15Zone. 19 seconds left. We have no time outs but I'm
- 26:18cool with. There we go.
- 26:20People are gonna be like San Francisco fan.
- 26:22Yeah, if the Colts are playing I'll trust me.
- 26:24When we do this in a few weeks, Brian with the Colts and Niners
- 26:27playing. That's going to be a fun one for
- 26:29us. Three hours later.
- 26:32Yeah. Y'all are going to enjoy that
- 26:34one. All right, so Brian's already
- 26:36mentioned it. But where the f is the read
- 26:38option play. It's freaking absolutely killing
- 26:43killing. I run game because there's no
- 26:46threat of it. They're keying in on wherever
- 26:49they're running, back is going and they are attacking it, the
- 26:54defensive ends are crashing and you feel Ron if nothing else.
- 27:00If? If we just did it one time Lanes
- 27:05would start reopening. And I know this isn't Khalil
- 27:08Herbert. We we have some vision problems
- 27:11you know, somebody quit one out there today about King missing a
- 27:16wide open hole, but that's again that's a teachable thing but
- 27:20we're thinking our Playbook one of the ways we can significantly
- 27:24help this offense in this corner back.
- 27:27You're putting more pressure on the running backs than you need
- 27:32to Yes, you're putting more pressure on the offensive line
- 27:35than you need to. And I'm not sure what the
- 27:37endgame benefit is for Braxton because he still running the
- 27:42football in design runs and scrambling like unless you're
- 27:47treating the entire situation with kid gloves, take the
- 27:50training wheels off. And let's run this mother for
- 27:54like at some point. At some point, we just we have
- 28:01to take the training wheels off of Offense because we've seen
- 28:05that he's been struggling, picking up some of the reeds in
- 28:09the passing game, but we're also, we're not fully
- 28:13unleashing, his potential in the running game, we're not and I'd
- 28:17and we said preseason, we don't want to run him to the point
- 28:20where we're we're getting him hurt because we need, you know,
- 28:24and I said it last week. The problem is that this offense
- 28:29is held back by Braxton's play. This offense is also buoyed by
- 28:32By Braxton's play because of his ability to run the ball and the
- 28:37classic is a classic Catch-22. And, but we're still, we're
- 28:44training wheels. The, the running game because
- 28:46we're not using the read option, and it makes no sense, it
- 28:52doesn't no sense because if that was starting, this is me being
- 28:57again, the novice and I say that a lot, but folks, but if that
- 29:01read option element, Was there easier runs easier play fakes
- 29:07easier for for that first reader that second read because you're
- 29:12running something guys aren't going to be right in their spot.
- 29:16So instead of having to throw a perfect ball Can we just catch a
- 29:21freaking ball in the end zone instead of having to catch a
- 29:23perfect, throw a perfect ball? You don't dip and it makes no
- 29:28sense in embalming. If we come out in two weeks and
- 29:32we are were doing it and it's in it's just confusing Notre Dame
- 29:35to know, ends, great, you held it out a month.
- 29:38You also lost a game in that month where we know for a fact
- 29:43that there were somewhere between at least one touchdown
- 29:45and probably 40 to 50 more yards. if we had held at all
- 29:50times, all right, yeah, that that's a big problem, you know,
- 29:56when we talk about The read option.
- 29:59The big thing that we need to look at is that you know who's
- 30:03paying attention to the read option, right?
- 30:05So we know what, we know that there's the option guy that and
- 30:09that Defenders always going to have to honor it to a degree
- 30:13you're probably going to. You usually see that kind of
- 30:16squeeze and pop technique that Oregon made famous and and
- 30:20pretty much any four-man front defense.
- 30:24That that that's the type of technique they employ 22.
- 30:28Stop the read option. But usually also the linebackers
- 30:35have to have some sort of play on that as well.
- 30:38You don't want to get over influenced in the, in the, in
- 30:44the Run game. But right now they're paying
- 30:46their giving absolutely no. No respect to Braxton keeping it
- 30:51in the read option. None.
- 30:53Well, we just saw, there was a little jet motion.
- 30:57Little option, play trailer, Lance runs it.
- 31:00Watch What Happens right here. Just that's beautiful.
- 31:08All right, Ron, that was a great play.
- 31:10By the offensive line by the Silverback himself just killing
- 31:15somebody. Let's talk about our offensive
- 31:17line. It's a patchwork right now,
- 31:20buddy. We had we had Lucy this Smith
- 31:24slide over to the left. Tackle this week, we had Brock
- 31:28slide over to left guard. Then we had Johnny Jordan at
- 31:32Center. We had Caden more at Right Guard
- 31:37and then we had Luke 2, Nu du out there, right?
- 31:40Tackle back to his old stomping grounds.
- 31:42So it was, it was definitely a switch up there and There were
- 31:50some good things. I saw with this new lineup,
- 31:52there was some bad. I mean, the good.
- 31:56I think, let's see this Smith held up as good as any tackle
- 32:00that we've played this whole season.
- 32:02So okay, good job there. I didn't see any major problems
- 32:07with and past Pro for him. There was a couple I think
- 32:12Braxton took, maybe one or two hits because because everybody I
- 32:15don't think he gave up a sack. Did a pretty good job holding it
- 32:18down. Brock had a better game, not
- 32:23having to play tackle so good for him.
- 32:29We still had a little bit more penetration than I'd like to on
- 32:33on the runs and that kind of stopped some of what we were
- 32:36trying to do on the interior there.
- 32:37So I think some of that is a work in progress.
- 32:41You're probably not getting quite as as good of a Interior
- 32:47combo with moving. Lizzie this out there to tackle.
- 32:52The Interiors, probably taking a little step back here.
- 32:55Okay, can I ask this question? Yep.
- 33:00Do you see a better combo being when Silas comes back because it
- 33:04was mentioned that they don't think his foot is a long-term
- 33:07deal. I hear that.
- 33:08I think he's probably back by Notre Dame because that would be
- 33:11essentially, three weeks, help out.
- 33:14Yep. Do you see us?
- 33:15Back and going to new to see this Johnny Brock Silas.
- 33:23That's the big question, man. I think tenuta is the better of
- 33:32the two between Silas and and, and loot.
- 33:42It's going it's going to be tough, man, because we said at
- 33:45the beginning of the year that depth especially tackled depth,
- 33:48is the problem and we're already seeing it in four games in.
- 33:53It didn't take very long and we knew that they would have some
- 33:57ability to swap guys around. So I feel like we're still,
- 34:02we're not underwater yet but we're officially in Treading
- 34:06Water mode. Until Silas is good to go again
- 34:09and even then I think there's still some question marks about
- 34:12what that that that line that's going to look like is too new to
- 34:15moving back over like What are we going to see there?
- 34:20Yeah, I mean because 22 new to has had ups and downs at left
- 34:25tackle. He hasn't looked great.
- 34:27He hasn't looked awful, he's just looked mid and that's kind
- 34:31of what we thought he was going to be at left.
- 34:33Tackle is Because, unless we saw him take a big step, you know,
- 34:37past Pro was still a problem for him last year and it's been a
- 34:40little bit of a problem this year.
- 34:41He hasn't taken a big step. It's been a baby step and
- 34:46unfortunately that's When you lose a Christian Daris, all who
- 34:50was in past Pro, as good as they get, probably, the best left
- 34:57tackle last year in college football, because you can give
- 34:59us some credit. I mean, that's that's a big drop
- 35:03off and, you know, some of that is hurt.
- 35:06Braxton's play. I think, you know, when we saw
- 35:10Braxton play last year, the end of last year he was playing
- 35:14behind at that point. We had gotten as healthy as we
- 35:18had been all year on the offensive line and the offensive
- 35:21line was a strength of ours throughout the year was.
- 35:25But at that point and usually don't see it that late.
- 35:28But the offensive line had actually gotten back into
- 35:31healthy because Had missed two new to for several games during
- 35:34the year because a 1 because the covid he had a Nick.
- 35:37At one point we had other guys that were kind of in and out
- 35:41because the covid in and out for other reasons.
- 35:43Yeah. And we had finally gotten what
- 35:46it seemed like you know as healthy and we saw behind that
- 35:50Braixen having some success. And so I don't know if the not
- 35:56being comfortable in the pocket is an extension of this line.
- 35:59Just not being what would last year's was Or what?
- 36:02But he really interesting to see what what it looks like once.
- 36:06Al's is healthy. Again, whether we stick with Le
- 36:08cetus at one of the tackle positions or whether something
- 36:12else happens, all right. It's going to be really
- 36:15interesting to see what line rolls out from Notre, Dame,
- 36:20what? Yeah, I'm Nation you go with
- 36:23again, I think Katie Maurice plate.
- 36:25Followed for a redshirt freshman, or is it again, do
- 36:29they make that sort of change to wear like, And we need to get
- 36:33our A's in gear. And you know what, the seat us
- 36:37is our better combos going to see this left to neuter, right?
- 36:42We'll put Silas down at Right Guard.
- 36:45Will keep Johnny at Center and we'll let brought play left
- 36:48guard. Or something in that combination
- 36:53because I don't think the offensive line has been terrible
- 36:55this year. No, no, it's been, it's been a
- 37:00roller coaster. It's been a roller coaster and I
- 37:02think that's, that's the big issue is that you don't know
- 37:06what to expect from it snap by snap because they'll have a have
- 37:11one Snapper, they're doing everything, right?
- 37:13And then they turn around and you know, you got pressure,
- 37:18that's Blowing up a running play or you got somebody coming on
- 37:23blocked off the edge and sacking Braxton.
- 37:27I mean, there's, there's just so many inconsistent plays and not
- 37:30just the inconsistent that you see over the course of a
- 37:32standard game but just really, really high highs and low lows,
- 37:37very true. No, well, let's say this brine
- 37:40two guys that when they get the balls in their hands have done
- 37:45it very well. This year tray and tape both
- 37:48really good days catching the ball.
- 37:50Tray over 110 a with 76, and then you don't take on top of
- 37:56what he did in the punt game, over 140 yards from scrimmage
- 38:00and it's again, I have some people say, well we don't have
- 38:03talent. We can't.
- 38:05When you get these guys in the right positions and today they
- 38:09were put out yesterday, they were put in the right position
- 38:12we can, we can have nice things. Yeah, the question is, is they
- 38:17don't get put in right positions enough We actually ran some.
- 38:22Well, that's just say. Initially on the first drive, we
- 38:25ran some routes over the middle of the field and then they
- 38:27completely went away for a quarter and a half.
- 38:31And then we finally went back. Another post, we had a dig and
- 38:36we had a slant and I'm like we can throw to the middle again
- 38:41because I thought, I thought somebody upstairs said, all
- 38:46right we're not throwing in the middle of the rest of the damn
- 38:48game. Everything's outside the
- 38:49numbers. We finally started throwing back
- 38:52to the middle of the field. And we started getting a little
- 38:53bit more success. The problem was that nothing was
- 38:56sustained. And You know, Trey had about
- 39:01three big plays and was pretty steady throughout the day, you
- 39:06note a had a couple balls that were threat that where he was
- 39:08open in the ball wasn't thrown well to him a couple other
- 39:11places where he was opening just in get there.
- 39:15So I mean, these are, these are good days.
- 39:17That could have been great days if we would have been a little
- 39:20bit more consistent execution-wise.
- 39:24And you know, what can we say about tail on that?
- 39:27That kick return? I mean, that punt return.
- 39:29I mean, that was just all that wide, cut up field, cut back,
- 39:34touchdown and beautiful. It was absent watch and, and
- 39:39that punter, got completely railed on the sidelines, because
- 39:43he out kicked his coverage. And then he did a very bad job
- 39:48of being the last line of defense.
- 39:54Honors, our last line, but offense Ron.
- 39:56But again, those two guys were great days.
- 39:58All right, let's go to gigantic screw-ups or what the hell
- 40:03moments less sorts of all. I listen to the presser
- 40:07afterwards, the fake punt for, when they took absolutely 1000%
- 40:12responsibility for, he said that they had noticed that with
- 40:16Richmond, anytime they punted their Gunners essentially left.
- 40:21The guys. Yep.
- 40:23So they would just leave their guys.
- 40:26I'm assuming setting up blocking.
- 40:28He says, we punted the first time and they did it.
- 40:31So on the second time we punted, we felt there was an opportunity
- 40:35there, and then he said, kind of the way he said, did you hear
- 40:42his voice was more of a joking thing of Peter had slung the
- 40:46ball? Good.
- 40:46All week. When we were trying these fakes
- 40:49hell, I told him. You know, if you hadn't thrown
- 40:53the ball so good. All week, I don't even thought
- 40:55about, you know, calling for calls for the guys open.
- 41:00It's a bad pass, you know, if it was Dorian strong, he was, he
- 41:05was targeting their bad. And I mean, he came open, just
- 41:08like, they had seen on tape. And, you know, I think the weird
- 41:13thing is number one, you felt the need to do that.
- 41:16Number two, Did you rep? I mean, did you wrap it enough?
- 41:21We're more was comfortable with it, because obviously, what was
- 41:26it? Look ready to throw?
- 41:27A 25 yard pass? My looks okay with that.
- 41:36I'm okay with that. If the pass is completed,
- 41:48actually, regardless, whether the past was completed or
- 41:50incomplete, every time we are in a plus situation, was it plus
- 41:5542? I think that's where we were,
- 41:58that sound, right? Simpler it.
- 42:02Let me pull up the summary here on my phone.
- 42:05Efforting, efforting efforts. He had 14 after teen.
- 42:09This is it right here? Yes, second part.
- 42:15We were at their 41. So we were in plus territory.
- 42:20I think what you can do by putting it on tape?
- 42:22Regardless of outcome is if it's a situation like that in plus
- 42:28territory and you go back and show pot, there does have to be
- 42:32a respect, right? There has to be a respect to
- 42:36show. Okay.
- 42:37Listen these dummies, you know, they ran a fake punt against
- 42:42Richmond. Would they do it against us?
- 42:45Let's, let's play. Let's Play A prevent or let's
- 42:48play. Very cautious punt, return or
- 42:52punt. Block.
- 42:53I'm okay with that. And I'm also going to the
- 42:56ownership. Yeah, I've got no problem with
- 42:59the ownership. I've got a problem with.
- 43:02You've got Notre. Dame up next.
- 43:05And I would much rather them not show their hand and spring
- 43:09something like that against Notre Dame.
- 43:11And whether they work or not, then put it on tape and maybe
- 43:16gain an extra five to seven yards of field position because
- 43:20they honored the The fake, that's all where they punted
- 43:27from Braun 527 yards. Could mean being from the tend
- 43:30to be in at like the to. So you know I can argue with you
- 43:36that way because the way the defense is played.
- 43:38If you tell me we have a team with the quarterback like Jack
- 43:41cone who can't run. We could probably get him down
- 43:44in the end zone or something. Yeah but if we're kicking from
- 43:47the 41 I like Peter Morris chances of getting it, okay?
- 43:51There regardless of what's Happening.
- 43:54You got it. Got you got you because he is a
- 43:56stud. All right, let's go to the other
- 43:58mind-boggling thing. I didn't get to see this live.
- 44:02So Brian, we're inside the 10-yard line.
- 44:05It's only a seven. Nothing game.
- 44:07Yeah, we come out of commercial. And they talk about knocks Kata
- 44:12me quarterback. Let me ask the first.
- 44:14Words are the first thing that popped in your mind.
- 44:18What the hell are we doing? And in this is no knock on Knox.
- 44:25I mean, I thought this was a game where and even based on the
- 44:29the explanation we got regardless of score getting
- 44:32knocked snaps would have been a good thing in this game.
- 44:36The problem is when you did it, you did it when you're only up a
- 44:40touchdown. So the game is definitely not in
- 44:42hand, and you did it inside the test again.
- 44:48Well and this is where I feel like it was more of the
- 44:52different tones to brag because he said it in the pressure.
- 44:55The timing of him going in was not prescribed, you know, it
- 44:59wasn't a deal where one guy has to be looking over his shoulder.
- 45:02The facts were, he was going to play, and it's going to the
- 45:05whole not. Prescribed thing, is they hadn't
- 45:07determined before, this wasn't third drive or fourth drive,
- 45:12whatever it was Knox is going in.
- 45:14This was for whatever reason. They decided that this was the
- 45:17best time. Put in knocks kadem.
- 45:20Well in the question is who decided?
- 45:23Yeah it sounds like it wasn't fuu.
- 45:27No, no no just too because of the way he said it right there
- 45:32is decision but again he sounds like he lets Brad do do what he
- 45:37wants. Yeah.
- 45:39So I mean that was the big thing because he gets down there and I
- 45:44feel like the play calling wasn't great.
- 45:46We had a the where he threw Who the Pick?
- 45:49It was kind of like a little quick Sprint, right.
- 45:52Yeah. Which a quick Sprint on the
- 45:556-yard line, puts you in the end zone and he was getting Bear
- 46:00Down on and didn't throw the the route on time and then once he
- 46:05saw he was in the end zone and might take a sack panicked and
- 46:09chucked it choked it and it was it was about two seconds, too
- 46:13late. If he'd have thrown that on
- 46:15time, it would have probably been a completion, but he threw
- 46:17it late. Corner undercut, the route or
- 46:20sorry, safety, undercut the route.
- 46:21And and you gotta got interception if he takes it on
- 46:25his third step from sprinting and puts it at a, it's a 15-yard
- 46:29gain. All is all is well, but he
- 46:32didn't. And essentially it said up
- 46:33there, only touchdown of the day and for what they went on like
- 46:38oh, he's got to be secure, it's like you put the back up in a
- 46:42terrible y'all put the back up in a terrible situation.
- 46:45Now if you're if you're a good head coach, when you see Enochs
- 46:48coming going out there or coming to you to discuss.
- 46:51And I don't know how that would go since it was, you know, it
- 46:54wasn't the beginning of a drive. It was a punt.
- 46:57I know things are done differently.
- 46:59I would have went on my headset when we put my headset on here.
- 47:03What the hell are you thinking? I'm Knox isn't going to go out
- 47:06here at the 10th if we're at the 40.
- 47:08Yeah let's let him go. We're at the 10-yard line.
- 47:11This is the one touchdown me and essentially it it it made the
- 47:15game even more uncomfortable or than it was.
- 47:19So yeah. In the the problem that I had
- 47:23with that is that when you bring in a quarterback, your second
- 47:27string quarterback what you want to do is give him some play
- 47:31calls that get him comfortable. When you're at the 6-yard line
- 47:35you cannot make those calls. Everything is tight.
- 47:39And you made tight calls and then he played tight because he
- 47:43was put in the situation where he's almost set up to fail.
- 47:47It was they hate that for Knox. I mean, regardless of the
- 47:50outcome of the game or how it impacted the game, I hate that
- 47:54for Knox and his confidence because you put him in a
- 47:57scenario where he either feels really good or really bad about
- 48:01himself. There wasn't going to be any
- 48:03sort of Middle Ground there, right?
- 48:05Well he's either going to he was either going to throw them out
- 48:08of the Shadows. Do their own goal post or he's
- 48:13going to make the play he made and not really not see the field
- 48:16the rest of the game. And that's the unfortunate thing
- 48:19there because you put him in that scenario where more than
- 48:24likely he's going to, he's going to have a failure.
- 48:27So I don't like that at all. Well, Brian, we finally saw the
- 48:32third quarter back again this week.
- 48:36Kind of Berlin scores a touchdown.
- 48:38And all I thought was a nice all that.
- 48:40Where the hell was that? When we play West Virginia,
- 48:43fourth and one inside the five like it, which I'm inside the
- 48:47five, all three of them. And every time you go to is,
- 48:55especially when we were down inside the three twice, the
- 48:59that's when it just. It boggles me because you saw
- 49:01the play, we're an easy touchdown.
- 49:04I want to make a bet. That one work would have
- 49:07probably got it in at least once if not twice it, put in those
- 49:11situations again guy running the show, don't know what he doing,
- 49:16but can we just, can we continue to use the guy right?
- 49:20Brian. I mean situationally like we've
- 49:23been calling for that we were calling for for two years, when
- 49:27Quincy Patterson was here. And we were calling or against
- 49:32West Virginia and we were saying from jump, Treat let.
- 49:36I mean Braxton's. Not the biggest quarterback in
- 49:38the world you know, you're already gunshot on the read
- 49:43option. If you want to actually have
- 49:45some of those elements in the offense, you need to get Connor
- 49:48blumberg on the field as much as you can.
- 49:50Absolutely, this is all I'm going to say, Notre Dame game in
- 49:54two weeks. If we are third and one or
- 49:59fourth and one or inside the three in Connors, not in with
- 50:02some sort of play. I'm going to swing by your house
- 50:06middle of the game. We're going to turn on radio
- 50:08Wilson to laze, burn up in West. We're going to drive to
- 50:11Blacksburg, and we're going to sit outside merryman, great for
- 50:16Brad to come out. And be light.
- 50:19Seriously like Perfect Situation.
- 50:22Exactly. LeBron all is not lost.
- 50:26The defense, played exceptionally well again and I
- 50:28tell you the more I watch this defense.
- 50:31This defense is reminding me of the 2016 defense.
- 50:34Not one of the elite defense has not not not what 17 was or the
- 50:39mid 2000's or the you know late 90s but it reminded me of 2016.
- 50:43We're at defense gave up roughly about 22 points a game.
- 50:49About. I think they were 29th or 30th
- 50:51in Total Defense so they, you know, that upper third of the
- 50:57thing. This is what they're really
- 50:58reminded me of, because they're Bend or break, you can get some
- 51:04yards on them, but eventually you're going to get to a point
- 51:07of field, you can Get to a point of the field.
- 51:09You can't get to a point in the field where they make a play
- 51:13you're up. And now you're either out of
- 51:14field goal range, or you, you forced a turnover.
- 51:19Yeah, we've seen that a couple times so far with this defense
- 51:22where you know they get they get inside the 30 but all of a
- 51:25sudden they end up fourth down there, they're back at the 32
- 51:2833, yard line, forced a couple turnovers once they cross the
- 51:3350. So I mean you like what the
- 51:35defense is doing on that regard, still really good.
- 51:38Good play out of Waller, solid. Play out of Dax.
- 51:47Tisdale was a little more up doubt.
- 51:49He had a good game but Tisdale was up and down in terms of his
- 51:53his Gap fits but overall, good game, he had a good game with
- 51:59with his tackling tackling overall was improved this week.
- 52:04It wasn't as good as I'd like to see but definitely a lot better
- 52:06than it was against West Virginia.
- 52:09I mentioned this earlier and I don't think you ever answer
- 52:12someone put you on the spot. If we bring the tackling game
- 52:16this week to last week, is it a different outcome?
- 52:22It's close. I mean, it's hard to tell.
- 52:26It's hard to tell, okay. It's hard to tell if we give up
- 52:30some it was those like the crippling first downs?
- 52:34Like you see what we did this week?
- 52:36Like that. Tomorrow, we can try to take
- 52:37that shot from the tackles. He had this week.
- 52:40If that was the tackle there, they don't get that first down.
- 52:44Yeah, I'm going to school. Yeah.
- 52:48What else? I got a couple points of worry.
- 52:52Tell me if I'm right or wrong. Braun the running, okay, that
- 52:55kind of scared me. Some of the plays he get good
- 52:57and just in general some of the run, some of the gashes and I
- 53:01know it and it certain points in time we were mixing and
- 53:04matching, you know, trying to get some guys, some reps.
- 53:10So, you know, it was a different sort of depth and I saw Keyshawn
- 53:14out there. It's all some of the younger
- 53:16defensive linemen out there. Should I be worried about those
- 53:19things? I'd say overall I would be too
- 53:25worried the running quarterback. I know that was kind of a little
- 53:33bit of an anomaly because the first big run that their
- 53:37starting quarterback got injured on that was kind of a busted
- 53:41play that he just kind of made something happen.
- 53:45So, sometimes things like that happen.
- 53:48I mean, that's just not, that's not something that I would be
- 53:51overly concerned. About there were a couple QB
- 53:54runs where we were just a little bit out of position but overall
- 53:59I mean we probably had the face, the better of the rushing
- 54:05quarterbacks. Yeah.
- 54:07On that roster and did a pretty good job of holding him in check
- 54:12for most of the game. I'd like to see us be a little
- 54:16bit better in some of our fits in the Run game.
- 54:21We had a couple Couple spots where we were out of the Gap and
- 54:25they were able to kind of get to the second level and our
- 54:27safeties had to make a play one in particular, where I can't
- 54:32remember which safety it was. But they had a kind of make a
- 54:35shoestring tackle to avoid a touchdown run.
- 54:39Right up the gut. So we got to do better about
- 54:42that. It's got to get cleaned up, but
- 54:45overall it was good, but we can't let one or two misfires
- 54:50turn into really big plays that. That cost of the game because we
- 54:54don't if our offense keeps playing like this, we don't have
- 54:57a ton of room for error no and and big sudden plays are going
- 55:02to be bad for us because we've seen that if we get into the
- 55:06tighter area, we tend to Bow up and force field goals.
- 55:10We can't let them score from from 40 plus yards out.
- 55:14Yeah. And the next eight games, the
- 55:15way they're seeing teams, is, it can happen and one guy got back
- 55:21in the stack, On this week. So I'm a little more in the
- 55:24action was a Mars bar. No, definitely got to get him
- 55:27back to what he was doing early. I mean t key in on him the man
- 55:31you can just see it in every snap they know where he is and
- 55:35they are adjusting to him. They're keying on him, they're
- 55:38running at him in there in the Rush game.
- 55:41I will say I saw him doing some good things in terms of when he
- 55:45was blocked, he kept working. He ran down a running back.
- 55:52Back down the field, like eight yards down field, he walked him
- 55:57down. So yeah, that was impressive
- 56:01just seeing him flash that athleticism is pretty, pretty
- 56:04impactful. And I'm hoping that he gets a
- 56:06little bit more involved in the kind of the tackle for loss
- 56:10game. Like we saw him in game one
- 56:13because, you know, we saw that game rely.
- 56:17All right. This is what we're going to get
- 56:18all year and we have a really, really seen that since, since
- 56:21you See, and some of that it looks like unc's offensive line
- 56:26is just bad. True.
- 56:29Their veteran is hell, and they're just bad.
- 56:32Not a good offensive on whatsoever.
- 56:35All right. Brian last night.
- 56:37Me, you dropped the pole out on the twittersphere, got over 100
- 56:41votes and basically, we were asking Hokie Nation out on
- 56:46Twitter that are followers, you know, after the Richmond game
- 56:49and after the first month of the season, Where do you feel with
- 56:53the last eight games of the season?
- 56:54And, you know, the answers were three or less for five or six or
- 56:58more. And brine mean you already
- 57:02talked about it? I went and I'm at the beginning
- 57:05of the season, I felt good about it after the first, I felt good
- 57:09about it, even after West Virginia I'm at for now because
- 57:13now you've seen Syracuse is better than we thought.
- 57:19Yeah, it was better than we thought a, we think.
- 57:21I don't know what it is. It's like Georgia Tech when
- 57:24you're picking there. An anomaly for you pit.
- 57:27Lives and dies by, how good of a game, can he pick it can have
- 57:30against any given defense? They really, they still don't
- 57:36have a running game, their offensive line is still suspect.
- 57:40Their defense is not as good as it was last year, but if Penny,
- 57:44if Kenny pick, it goes out and has a good game there.
- 57:47Potentially going to have a chance to win.
- 57:50And especially when they play lesser competition, like, they
- 57:52did this week, but you said it Syracuse their defense looks
- 57:56good. Their running game is on track.
- 57:59Georgia Tech has been playing significant Up with the Georgia
- 58:04Tech yet, even if it is, it first two weeks, Georgia, Tech
- 58:07or is it lasts two weeks, Georgia Tech because they're
- 58:10completely different teams exhaust top-to-bottom,
- 58:14completely different teams on. So I'm going to just say this,
- 58:20that might be the worst events in the country.
- 58:23I mean it's up there. If you talk about the four is
- 58:25the worst Power. It might be the worst Power 5
- 58:27defense in the country. I mean, it's not even a joke.
- 58:30I don't think that's that much of a hyperbola.
- 58:32Lee. We're both of big.
- 58:34They can't get pressure on the quarterback anymore, and their
- 58:37secondary is god-awful gahbage. All right?
- 58:41So just so, you know, if you guys are known where other
- 58:43people are standing for, is the winner at 35 percent.
- 58:48Yep. Second kind of shocking.
- 58:50To me was five wins at 28% three or less at 25 percent.
- 58:56And there is about 10, people who voted in this.
- 59:00That say, we can win six or more.
- 59:03More. What tackle on that.
- 59:06So they're actually got some positive folks out there. 10% of
- 59:09y'all are still leaning positive.
- 59:12I'm right at I'm saying for I can see five, I could you know
- 59:18what I'll be. I mean this is the true optimist
- 59:20in me. If we hear that there are
- 59:22significant changes being made on offense.
- 59:26I think I can lean more toward higher side but I don't have
- 59:29faith in that and that's why I got to stick with for saying,
- 59:32will probably be Eva will probably beat Georgia Tech just
- 59:37because I think the defense on those two games Kenny pick it
- 59:41has nightmares of Lane stadium. So I think he does it.
- 59:46Kenny picking hates playing in Lane.
- 59:49I'd feel better about Georgia Tech.
- 59:51If we were playing in Lane I feel better about Syracuse only
- 59:54because you're playing Elaine. That's right.
- 59:59It's one of the screwed up ones. They get back to back home
- 1:00:01games. Yep.
- 1:00:02Because of covid. Okay.
- 1:00:04Alright. So we're feeling a seven and
- 1:00:07five season coming on and less changes are made and
- 1:00:11implemented. All right, buddy, did you watch
- 1:00:17any other work up? I watch some of it.
- 1:00:19I watch some of it. I know you watched a lot of it.
- 1:00:25All day Friday. You digested.
- 1:00:27It, I died yesterday Saturday, as much as we could before we
- 1:00:31add some mom afternoon activities and then I came back
- 1:00:35continue to watch it. It literally was on my.
- 1:00:38Like, I told I told y'all Thursday night, it was on the
- 1:00:41big screen here at the house and then today, literally from lunch
- 1:00:47time until they were doing the presser and the guys had their
- 1:00:51champagne bottle. The US team, by the way.
- 1:00:55Unbelievable, and it's a core group.
- 1:00:59I know I'm being golf, nerdy, the oldest person on that team
- 1:01:01is 37 in the youngest is 24. Essentially, this is a team that
- 1:01:06for the next four Ryder cups could be together and they're
- 1:01:10good, and they're passionate, and they've got fight in them,
- 1:01:15they've got grit in them, but they also have the whole listen
- 1:01:20to Patrick can't late. Like, Patrick can't lay is just
- 1:01:23like, cold-blooded. Like he was Like we want to
- 1:01:25bleep and put 20 on them today and it's like Jesus.
- 1:01:28Like we wouldn't break the scoring record.
- 1:01:30We want to blow them out of the water and it's just like, this
- 1:01:35is great to me. The other part that was really
- 1:01:38awesome and it happens every Ryder Cup.
- 1:01:41When they whoever wins gets absolutely hammered hammered
- 1:01:47from the time. The last match ends until about
- 1:01:49an hour and 20 minutes later, the press conference and it's
- 1:01:52like the best press conference of the Year.
- 1:01:54Oh yeah. Yeah.
- 1:01:56So I saw that Brooks and Bryce and hugged it out.
- 1:02:01Point it out and you know what I think maybe having two guys who
- 1:02:05have a little Feud going on, might be one of those good
- 1:02:08things for a team because it what it essentially for a if
- 1:02:14you're the captain it's like, okay, I got to get these guys on
- 1:02:16the same page before I worry about anything else.
- 1:02:18Once I get them on the same page, then we start working with
- 1:02:21the other details and whatnot but great when 8:42 essentially
- 1:02:29a unbelievable. All right out.
- 1:02:32And, you know, now, I got to wait two years and in two years,
- 1:02:35I'll be getting up. I think it's in Rome 2.
- 1:02:38That means the for like we a and I will be up at like, I might
- 1:02:41not make it the first hour, but I'll eat beliefs beyond my for,
- 1:02:44am watching it, because you're crazy person, but I respect it
- 1:02:51is just that it's, you know, it's just one of its one of
- 1:02:54those scores. For me, it's a pain difference
- 1:02:57for me. Or that early to watch events.
- 1:03:04So, you know, I'm not like out here.
- 1:03:07You know, every Thursday waking up at 3 a.m. watching the Euro
- 1:03:11Tour on Golf Channel. Yeah.
- 1:03:13Although you know, someone paid me to like Golf.
- 1:03:16And by out there have a golf ball location.
- 1:03:19I'd wake up at 3 and do it if you want to pay me, I'm 500.
- 1:03:27I'm 500 now. My you are two games above 500
- 1:03:31in the Saturday. Pick them's.
- 1:03:33Yes sir. I lost world through the list
- 1:03:36here. Brian you started off with the
- 1:03:38rough Friday night. You took UVA.
- 1:03:41You laid the for it was probably a good feeling of losing though.
- 1:03:45I mean, yeah, I was like, okay, well, I mean wakes up somewhat
- 1:03:50like, I think I said it even on the, on the podcast when we
- 1:03:53recorded like wakes a likable team.
- 1:03:55So if I lose that when I'm fine with that one, he awakes looking
- 1:04:00like, you know, potentially an example, B team in the Atlantic
- 1:04:06will see how that shakes out, I guess then we're BC with Clemson
- 1:04:12in there. But I mean, we actually have
- 1:04:14some drama in the Atlantic this year.
- 1:04:17So you like to see that Yeah, I chose wake because again you
- 1:04:22cannot have that bad of a defense.
- 1:04:24I don't care how good your offense is, your offense is
- 1:04:27going to have to score every possession.
- 1:04:28I think wait to have to punt until like late 3rd, which is
- 1:04:33alright. The next one we both nailed Hugh
- 1:04:36freeze and Malik. Willis at Liberty, go up to the
- 1:04:39Dome and find out playing at that place is just not fun cuse
- 1:04:43wins out right? You said it earlier.
- 1:04:45Brian their defense look good. There Run game.
- 1:04:48Looks in shape. Um, and you know that game it
- 1:04:54luckily it is at Lane. It is not at the Dome that year.
- 1:04:59I think that that's the big thing we can hang our hat on is
- 1:05:03that? Yes.
- 1:05:04Syracuse looks better than we thought.
- 1:05:07They'd at least look, competent. Even that mean I don't think
- 1:05:09they're going to make any sort of noise anywhere, but they're
- 1:05:13they're not an easy out anymore and having them at Lane I think
- 1:05:17is going to work in our favor. I think we'll have enough.
- 1:05:20Enough juice to get through that one.
- 1:05:23But it's definitely, it's not one that I'm necessarily saying
- 1:05:28book a win anymore. No, no, it's going to be
- 1:05:30probably a probably be a ugly defensive War unless we made
- 1:05:33changes by then. All right.
- 1:05:35Brian you. And with the ACC I went with the
- 1:05:38SEC, BC, pulls out the overtime, win in, and I need to see more
- 1:05:47about Mizzou. Then BC because I want to see
- 1:05:53how bad Mizzou is now, because the 2p five teams they played,
- 1:06:00they've lost to Kentucky, they lost a BC.
- 1:06:03So are they really just a bad team or what?
- 1:06:07But ju you believed in BC and you nailed that one though.
- 1:06:13Yeah, I know me and I don't think Kentucky is a bad team
- 1:06:15either. I mean they're sitting What they
- 1:06:19are for know, so far. So I mean I know they have laid
- 1:06:23the tuna they'd be they be a still rebuilding South Carolina
- 1:06:28team they beat Mizzou and they be Chattanooga and Louisiana
- 1:06:33Monroe. So, yeah.
- 1:06:35Alright, the next one was one. We didn't even take any time to
- 1:06:38pull the trigger for Louisville, blow the doors off of ss U FS.
- 1:06:44You might win one game this year.
- 1:06:46If they don't beat you, man. Fast.
- 1:06:48I don't maybe two. Who are you giving them one or
- 1:06:52two even Syracuse anymore? Yeah, Florida.
- 1:07:00So they're NC State essentially, pulling the huge upset over.
- 1:07:06Clemson Clemson, How much of that game?
- 1:07:10Did you watch? Most of it.
- 1:07:14All right, everybody's talking about all DJ's, not that good
- 1:07:20and the alley. Their offensive line looks worse
- 1:07:25than ours. It definitely looks not what it
- 1:07:29should and that's what that's part of what's holding them
- 1:07:32back. DJ's play overall is holding
- 1:07:35them back. I think.
- 1:07:42They're not as deep at wide receiver, as they're used to.
- 1:07:47There's just a lot of factors their defense is still good, but
- 1:07:50they're deaf ends isn't going to win them games.
- 1:07:53When they play teams, that can still at least put up 20 points
- 1:07:56against them. Bingo, bango bongo.
- 1:07:59That's the honest truth. Right there, man.
- 1:08:01So we taking a look together on that one.
- 1:08:06I hate Duke, I swear, I'm not there.
- 1:08:08Ha ha ha that game, I look at that game in 3rd Corps, like I
- 1:08:13got this, this looks good. Kansas at 16 and cans.
- 1:08:16It was like up or down like one, I'm like, who's going to win the
- 1:08:19game? Do you just like open the
- 1:08:21floodgates? The last quarter.
- 1:08:23So good, job Ryan. Good job.
- 1:08:27Duke has been what I picked against someone time and ever
- 1:08:31since then. I've been I was like, I'm not
- 1:08:33going to pick against Duke anymore.
- 1:08:35I'm just gonna go duke every time.
- 1:08:37Now, the other ones it got you again.
- 1:08:40Yeah, I told you bitch, I told you hangover you didn't want to
- 1:08:44believe me. Brandon believe in hangovers,
- 1:08:47Georgia Tech laid, the smackdown on UNC.
- 1:08:50And now it looks like anyone with a cervical defense is
- 1:08:53probably going to beat you in C or at worst being a shootout
- 1:08:56with them, so, you know, but bronze anomaly is Georgia Tech.
- 1:09:03Literally, we might take those off the board for ourselves yet,
- 1:09:09unless we're playing them Dukes. Can George attacker off.
- 1:09:12Not going to discuss them at all.
- 1:09:14Alright? Now, the last couple of the big
- 1:09:17games of the weekend, we both took the Irish against Wisconsin
- 1:09:20in Chicago. That look if e going through the
- 1:09:244th and then just Notre Dame, went insane in the fourth
- 1:09:29quarter. Well, let's let's compare this
- 1:09:32because that gain kind of went the same way.
- 1:09:36Wisconsin played Ohio State, right?
- 1:09:40Penn State Penn State didn't play.
- 1:09:42Yeah. Sorry Penn State Penn State.
- 1:09:43Sorry. Yeah.
- 1:09:45So except except Notre Dame. Every time they touch the ball
- 1:09:50that late they they scored a weapon state couldn't get itself
- 1:09:56moving against them. Yep.
- 1:09:58So craziness there and then Arkansas and saying Pittman
- 1:10:03they're for real. Yeah, they're for real we were
- 1:10:07on top of that one. Yeah, I was thinking Arkansas.
- 1:10:11Could win that one out, right? And I mean, they went out there
- 1:10:14and they stuck it to him, man. Exactly.
- 1:10:19And then finally, the big game, Saturday night West, Virginia,
- 1:10:22Oklahoma, we both took Oklahoma, Oklahoma.
- 1:10:25I don't know what's wrong with them.
- 1:10:26I didn't see enough of that game.
- 1:10:27Saturday night, I saw a piece of it here and there saw the ending
- 1:10:31botched snap West. Virginia West Virginia
- 1:10:34essentially should have won that game probably lost a tech.
- 1:10:38So, Their car most kind of balancing out there.
- 1:10:43You know, we took the L on that it's just I'd rather be on the
- 1:10:47other side of that. Damn right?
- 1:10:50Yeah. West Virginia was going to be a
- 1:10:51to Lost team. I wish you would have been, you
- 1:10:53know, we'd have been one of those laws losses.
- 1:10:56But at least you know what, you know what I mean.
- 1:11:00I think one of the things that shown Is that West Virginia is,
- 1:11:03at least on defense and good defense.
- 1:11:06We scored more points than Ivana If you know, so they've got two
- 1:11:11losses but one of those is to Maryland where they gave them, a
- 1:11:14short feel two times. And they've actually got a
- 1:11:16quarterback that can throw the ball downfield.
- 1:11:18Yep. And you know they took an L2
- 1:11:22Oklahoma that went down to the wire and a low scoring Affair in
- 1:11:26Norman. Yeah.
- 1:11:27And your material, they did that in Norman.
- 1:11:29They didn't do that and they're there.
- 1:11:31They have not been historically, a good road team know, in the
- 1:11:35last several years. So very fact that they took a
- 1:11:39game that was big and took that team to the wire was good for
- 1:11:43them. Even though we're not sure how
- 1:11:46good this Oklahoma team. And let's since we're here let's
- 1:11:50talk about just college football as a whole man because there's
- 1:11:53about three teams that I trust right now.
- 1:11:55And then everybody else. I trust Bama, I trust ugga and I
- 1:12:01trust Oregon those are the only three teams that if they're
- 1:12:06playing a game where they have Any sort of advantage that I'd
- 1:12:11say. Okay, they're probably going to
- 1:12:12win that game. Yep, everybody else.
- 1:12:16It is the right now. The way it looks is the fourth
- 1:12:19playoff spot. No one knows.
- 1:12:22No one wants to go. I mean, no one wants that.
- 1:12:26You've had every other team that normally is, at least in this
- 1:12:29conversation through, at least mid-october.
- 1:12:32If not early, November already has one loss.
- 1:12:36Well, they already have a lot of them.
- 1:12:38Have two losses. Some have two and then those
- 1:12:41without what else that's garbage.
- 1:12:46So I watched Red Warriors play. They called a pi on him but it's
- 1:12:49not. But anyway, and then you have
- 1:12:52like your Ohio State's, right? Yeah.
- 1:12:55Lost organ already at home. Kind of got dominated trying to
- 1:12:59do quarterback changes just the way they've looked against their
- 1:13:02last two. Opponents have just and even the
- 1:13:05way it looked against Minnesota in Minnesota.
- 1:13:08Oh God. That loss eat makes it look even
- 1:13:11worse. Yeah, I mean it's if it is a
- 1:13:15true, it's a week-to-week. I have I have no confidence like
- 1:13:20we just ran through a pick em and I'm lean.
- 1:13:23At least picking ACC I at least am in my comfort zone, but even
- 1:13:29there it's, it's dicey, Georgia Tech doing stuff.
- 1:13:33You don't expect, dudes doing stuff, you don't expect, you
- 1:13:37know, Louisville, being a little bit better than we thought they
- 1:13:40were out the gate BC still. Having a solid team despite
- 1:13:44losing their starting quarterback.
- 1:13:46I mean, there's so many unpredictable things that are
- 1:13:49happening UNC with two conference losses already.
- 1:13:52I mean, NC State beating Clemson.
- 1:13:56All of this is just, it's shit that we didn't see to start the
- 1:14:02season. Usually college football is
- 1:14:04unpredictable, but not this unpredictable.
- 1:14:06All right, I'm going to throw this at you before we sign off
- 1:14:09the night. This has every makings of 2007.
- 1:14:16Yeah, every makings of 2007, that's all I'm going to say.
- 1:14:21I think it's going to be some stuff that happens.
- 1:14:23These next two months, you know what?
- 1:14:26Whether you're whether you if you love the team, you know
- 1:14:29what, Justin Fuente, make the change.
- 1:14:31Make yourself to play caller. Let's win out.
- 1:14:34Let's make the playoffs. Ryan's like yeah, I just need to
- 1:14:42see Signs of Life from the offense, where we can
- 1:14:44consistently move the ball in the passing game.
- 1:14:50Do decent things in the running game and at least average.
- 1:14:54I mean, right now are points per game.
- 1:14:57Average is garbage. We need to at least get close to
- 1:15:013000, go. Yeah, we're a full.
- 1:15:03We're a full actually. We're more than a touchdown away
- 1:15:06from that. Yeah.
- 1:15:08What? Y'all come in, come in Wednesday
- 1:15:10night, we're not going to be here next Sunday, we're not
- 1:15:12playing. So we're going to we're going to
- 1:15:14take about a week as well, but come in Wednesday night and what
- 1:15:17we're going to take a look at guys is we're just going to do a
- 1:15:22do a review of what was look like the first four games.
